I'm feeling great about the Padres, And anytime the Padres
and Dodgers have the potential to hook up, I'm always
gonna text the great Tim Kate's and just let him know.
You know that we are not afraid of those Dodgers anymore.
And I know and if there's any time to get
the Dodgers, it's right now before the All Star Otani

reminds me of back in the day. Remember when we
used to just play All Stars. There wasn't like travel ball,
And then there would be this guy that shows up
at the All Star Game and you'd had your mom
to go over and check his verth certificate because he
looked too big to play. That's what ol tany is.
And I hope somebody is checking that irth certificate for
that guy, because you know he does it all. But

we got to get him now before he pitches start
pitching next year. But I'm excited about the momentum of
the Padres doing a great job. Every hitter in the
lineup can can get on base. And then the guy

You know, we are back in the seventies. When I
was a youngster, we used to catch the bus, a
yellow bus in the neighborhood and it would take us
out to Jack Murphy Stadium and we'd sit in the
left field and the great Dave Winfield was there, and
that was before you know, Tony Gwen of course, but

Ozzie Smith. So I've been a Padre fan going back long.
But the Raiders when I'm west of Texas big time.
You know, I'm there every Sunday, and then east of
Texas you've got to throw on the Kelly Green for
the Eagles, who were struggling a little bit this year.
But those are my three teams. And of course I'm

a big Laker fan.

So speaking of the oh, they were doing their special
high five for the media.

Yeah, oh that was also. I'm so excited. I'm so
excited for you know, the preseason of basketball, so we
can see both the King and the Prince on the

Well, I'm glad you mentioned preseason. Is Brianni ain't gonna
be playing in the regular season?

I would assume in all your years playing, Eric, you've
been around a player that stitting happy. You know, maybe
he is looking for some new scenery. How does that
affect the rest of the team. Do you take that
person and like Mattester doesn't want to be around us,
you don't want to go on and play with or
do you are you able to just compartmentalize and say
that's his business.

Yeah, that's a good question. And fortunately or unfortunately, when
you're around the business, or have played as long as
I've played, there's come some situations where you know, at
the end of the role, when you're with a football
team and you love that team. Just like be A
wanted to come to the Raiders because he was a

Raider fan when he was younger, and his guy Derek
Carr was the quarterback. That situation didn't end too well.
I think it's a great point right now to give
him this opportunity to finish out his career in a
Super Bowl situation. So if something arises and a team
that thinks you can think they can kind of go

over the top, maybe the Jets or something like that
would be great for both. We can get something for him.
I love their pass rusher who's not in. He could
be on the other side of Max maybe and you know,
hopefully get us to a point defensive where we can
rush the passer. You know, even better now that someone
doesn't have to double Max Crosby and we can have

a son reddit there. But you know, that's just me
just kind of just all some stuff out there. And
I'm pretty sure Da who's a great player. I think
for the last two years. He's led the league receiving
touchdowns the last two years. So the guy's incredible. He's
going to be a Hall of Famer. But if he
wants to be on a team that you know can

be in the Super Bowl, like immediately, I think the
Jets may be the best possible situation. But that's just
me throwing stuff out there, guys.

They they can win games just like anybody else in
the NFL. What kind of year do you think they're
going to have once they get through this DeVonta Appas.

I think the big thing coming out of training camp
was the identification. You know, like the Chargers on one point,
we didn't have to ask them what their ID was
going to be. They drafted Joe All you know what
Jim Harm is going to be. They're gonna run the football,
no matter who's that quarterback, They're gonna run the football
thirty forty times a game if he could.

On the other hand, we were thinking, hey, we're going
to be a run dominant team, have a good defense,
play action, but we don't have the personnel to do that.
Our personnel. We draft maybe one of the best tight
ends to ever play college football and Brock, and Brock
is an amazing player. But when you draft Brock so high,

that says multiple position player. We're going to get into
eleven personnel. Throw the ball to be able to run
the ball. And I think it took us a couple
of weeks to understand that. Last week against the Cleveland Browns,
we spreaded it out. We threw the ball effectively, not
nothing deep. We took some shots we had some reverses

going you know, left, right, whatever, and then we're able
to run the ball because the defense had to adjust.
So we ended up running for over one hundred and

takes off. He buys the local hardware store and over
the next few years figure this one out. He decides
that there is a high demand from the culinary world
for French cookwar so he starts importing French cookwear and
selling it. And that's working, and he moves to San
Francisco and his business is expanding and he's got multiple locations.

He launches the catalog in seventy one. Before you know it,
it's hundreds of store and the biggest seller cookbooks. Chuck
was the editor and contributed to nearly every cookbook that
Williams Sonoma has thus far released, including the large multi
volume Williams Sonoma Kitchen Library set over forty volumes. It's
sold nearly ten million copies. The sole author was Chuck

of the Williams Sonoma Simple Cooking series, all told one
hundred cookbooks that have sold over one hundred million copies worldwide.
He lived to be one hundred died two months after
the Century of Marcus four thousand peach piece collection of
cookwear created the Chuck Williams Arts Museum.

born in New York, but she was raised in the valley.
She was an adopted daughter of parental TV writers. Her

I grew up at Gillian Welch. It's Cash Warren and
Gillian Welch right in front of the But Gillian Welch,

Her music, though it is a weird mix between Appalachia,
Americana country and bluegrass, not southern California, not all the Valley.
She is truly a modern day musical Marvel finally won
a Grammy in twenty twenty. She probably should have fifty

That works. The name of the band was Cotton Dressed

her music. She then took it to the Berkeley School
of Music in Boston because she was an already pretty
talented musician, and she met her life partner and musical
collaborator there, Dave Rawlings. I say life partner because it's
like Goldie Hawn and not Mary not married, but she's not.

It's not like a Lilith fair time, all right. I

Long Black Veil at the Grand Old Opry, and the
rest of the they say is history. She started making albums,
whether her husband Guy or whatever common law dude, Hey,

will be doing. That is how they write this. She
was an associate producer of the Old Brother Where Art
Thou soundtrack, and sang two songs on the record as well.

Well, what an introduction. I think you need to be

Might have sent some of your teammates. You know. I
can see some of the guys feeling like, you know, yes, yeah,
you know. I was there. I remember what Reggie was like.
No you don't, but uh, you know, it's always great
to catch up. Right at the beginning of the pro

football season. I don't really know where to start because
there's a lot to talk about. But with the Padres
and all the excitement down in San Diego and all
us Dodger folks and Tim Kates has his fancy new
Dodger had on right now and everybody, he's kind of
feeling a little weird because the Padres have some momentum.
How are you feeling? You're down? And Eric, what are
your feelings?
Speaker 2 (20:05):
I'm feeling great about the Padres, And anytime the Padres
and Dodgers have the potential to hook up, I'm always
gonna text the great Tim Kate's and just let him know.
You know that we are not afraid of those Dodgers anymore.
And I know and if there's any time to get
the Dodgers, it's right now before the All Star Otani
(20:30):
reminds me of back in the day. Remember when we
used to just play All Stars. There wasn't like travel ball,
And then there would be this guy that shows up
at the All Star Game and you'd had your mom
to go over and check his verth certificate because he
looked too big to play. That's what ol tany is.
And I hope somebody is checking that irth certificate for
that guy, because you know he does it all. But
(20:52):
we got to get him now before he pitches start
pitching next year. But I'm excited about the momentum of
the Padres doing a great job. Every hitter in the
lineup can can get on base. And then the guy
who kind of last night opened it up is to
Kief and just love him at the Padre fam. Yeah,
for sure.

Is that the Eric?

Is it the only team that you like have a
legit like you emotionally get invested or is there anything
else like any other professional team that you are emotionally
invested with that do you you know wins or losses
to wear them on your sleeve?
Speaker 2 (21:25):
I do, and I'm so superstitious here in San Diego.
You know, we are back in the seventies. When I
was a youngster, we used to catch the bus, a
yellow bus in the neighborhood and it would take us
out to Jack Murphy Stadium and we'd sit in the
left field and the great Dave Winfield was there, and
that was before you know, Tony Gwen of course, but
(21:47):
Ozzie Smith. So I've been a Padre fan going back long.
But the Raiders when I'm west of Texas big time.
You know, I'm there every Sunday, and then east of
Texas you've got to throw on the Kelly Green for
the Eagles, who were struggling a little bit this year.
But those are my three teams. And of course I'm
(22:08):
a big Laker fan.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
So speaking of the oh, they were doing their special
high five for the media.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
Yeah, oh that was also. I'm so excited. I'm so
excited for you know, the preseason of basketball, so we
can see both the King and the Prince on the
court at the same time, maybe throwing some alley you
and stuff like that. So this big time excited about
those Lakers coming up here in preseason.
Speaker 3 (22:39):
Well, I'm glad you mentioned preseason. Is Brianni ain't gonna
be playing in the regular season?
Speaker 2 (22:43):
That's right, Hey, that's right, Come on, come on, money.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
Money, what you know that you know that to be true?
The Raiders have you?
Speaker 3 (22:56):
I would assume in all your years playing, Eric, you've
been around a player that stitting happy. You know, maybe
he is looking for some new scenery. How does that
affect the rest of the team. Do you take that
person and like Mattester doesn't want to be around us,
you don't want to go on and play with or
do you are you able to just compartmentalize and say
that's his business.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
Yeah, that's a good question. And fortunately or unfortunately, when
you're around the business, or have played as long as
I've played, there's come some situations where you know, at
the end of the role, when you're with a football
team and you love that team. Just like be A
wanted to come to the Raiders because he was a
(23:33):
Raider fan when he was younger, and his guy Derek
Carr was the quarterback. That situation didn't end too well.
I think it's a great point right now to give
him this opportunity to finish out his career in a
Super Bowl situation. So if something arises and a team
that thinks you can think they can kind of go
(23:55):
over the top, maybe the Jets or something like that
would be great for both. We can get something for him.
I love their pass rusher who's not in. He could
be on the other side of Max maybe and you know,
hopefully get us to a point defensive where we can
rush the passer. You know, even better now that someone
doesn't have to double Max Crosby and we can have
(24:15):
a son reddit there. But you know, that's just me
just kind of just all some stuff out there. And
I'm pretty sure Da who's a great player. I think
for the last two years. He's led the league receiving
touchdowns the last two years. So the guy's incredible. He's
going to be a Hall of Famer. But if he
wants to be on a team that you know can
(24:38):
be in the Super Bowl, like immediately, I think the
Jets may be the best possible situation. But that's just
me throwing stuff out there, guys.
Speaker 1 (24:46):
And he could be with his bff.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
Yeah, Aaron Rodgers ran away from him to get the
Derek Carr, but now I wants to go back there.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
Yeah, money have you told Petros about the awkward high
five bro hug that we oh.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
Really where in the it was just in a hallway
by a sixty three to twenty one contest.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
But you got the Raider Charger whole lot. You know,
there's that the backdrop of the rivalry makes it hard. Eric,
did I go did you go high? I think you
went high?

Right?

And I think guy came in and it was it was,
it was. It was my fault. Eric, I am a
very awkward person and the real stiff guy. So you've
got a little stiff Booty Leroy. Yeah, you know it
is your best Eric, And I was, I was. I
was just a disaster stiff Bootsmith out in the hallways.
And so you know, and look what happened sixty three

to twenty one. And now Jim Harbos the head coach
of the Chargers. I mean, my gosh, who knew that
that awkward high five hug interaction would would lead to
that new head.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
Coaches though, Eric, it is kind of interesting. What do
you think Antonio Pierce is going to be able to
do now and in the future. The Raiders aren't helpless.
They they can win games just like anybody else in
the NFL. What kind of year do you think they're
going to have once they get through this DeVonta Appas.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
I think the big thing coming out of training camp
was the identification. You know, like the Chargers on one point,
we didn't have to ask them what their ID was
going to be. They drafted Joe All you know what
Jim Harm is going to be. They're gonna run the football,
no matter who's that quarterback, They're gonna run the football
thirty forty times a game if he could.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
Us.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
On the other hand, we were thinking, hey, we're going
to be a run dominant team, have a good defense,
play action, but we don't have the personnel to do that.
Our personnel. We draft maybe one of the best tight
ends to ever play college football and Brock, and Brock
is an amazing player. But when you draft Brock so high,
(26:41):
that says multiple position player. We're going to get into
eleven personnel. Throw the ball to be able to run
the ball. And I think it took us a couple
of weeks to understand that. Last week against the Cleveland Browns,
we spreaded it out. We threw the ball effectively, not
nothing deep. We took some shots we had some reverses
(27:02):
going you know, left, right, whatever, and then we're able
to run the ball because the defense had to adjust.
So we ended up running for over one hundred and
fifty yards the first time. And you know, the season
is being able to do that. So now with the
defense playing well and we're able to kind of spread
defenses out, I think now we have our identa. This
is gonna be a big game for us. Going to
(27:24):
Denver this week. We've beat him like eight times in
a row. They have Bo Nix, who's their quarterback, who's
a young guy and hopefully hopefully he was a young.
Speaker 1 (27:34):
But he's like thirty years old in college.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
You've seen a little bit of everything. But hopefully Max
is ready to roll this week. And we have the brown,
we have Denver's numbers, so hopefully we can get to
three and two.

Eric Allen Hall of Fame this year. This year, it's
this gona be this. You think Scataboo is ever going
to touch the Arizona State Hall of Fame? Do you

I think of jackson to fourth what now? Just born
spent time with his maternal grandmother, who had owned a
restaurant back in Ohio. She taught young Chuck how to cook.
Great Depression hits. Father's auto repair business fails. He packs
the family up for California. Let's see if there's something

out there in the Western Frontier? Was there no trying
to help the family make ends meet. When he's like ten,
he finds work on a date farm, Sniff's Date Gardens
in Indio, not Hadley's Sniffs.

Who the hell is that one?

And recognizing that's not a successful date farm. That's a
different time, you know, great depression. Maybe Hadley's bought him out,
recognizing his work ethic, his natural intelligence, his tough situation.
His sister was killed in an accident, his mother returned
to Florida. Charles is left on his own at twelve, oh,
Dana and Abigail Sniff take him in. They drive him
(31:00):
to high school in the morning. Se he earns his
keep by spending the afternoons working the date shop and
he's hands.
Speaker 1 (31:06):
Couldn't drink a date shake for the rest of his life.
It made him negative connotation when he graduated high school.
What does he do?
Speaker 3 (31:12):
Greatest generation shipped after the war airplane mechanic India, East Africa.
After the war, he works for Lockheed in la and
it was a weekend white guy golf trip to Sonoma.
Falls in love with the town and he moves there.
Many of my friends are black, how dare you? He
starts out on his own as a general contractor. That
(31:33):
takes off. He buys the local hardware store and over
the next few years figure this one out. He decides
that there is a high demand from the culinary world
for French cookwar so he starts importing French cookwear and
selling it. And that's working, and he moves to San
Francisco and his business is expanding and he's got multiple locations.
(31:55):
He launches the catalog in seventy one. Before you know it,
it's hundreds of store and the biggest seller cookbooks. Chuck
was the editor and contributed to nearly every cookbook that
Williams Sonoma has thus far released, including the large multi
volume Williams Sonoma Kitchen Library set over forty volumes. It's
sold nearly ten million copies. The sole author was Chuck
(32:16):
of the Williams Sonoma Simple Cooking series, all told one
hundred cookbooks that have sold over one hundred million copies worldwide.
He lived to be one hundred died two months after
the Century of Marcus four thousand peach piece collection of
cookwear created the Chuck Williams Arts Museum.
Speaker 1 (32:34):
Well, today we celebrate a musician that we have celebrated before.
By the way, that was a Preston Smith song. I
believe kitchen. I thought you were going to go with
the B side of that ep smeg, But no, No.
Gillian Welch another musician. They're the great female musician, fifty
seven years old, much like Preston Smith, raised in southern California.
(32:58):
Though you would not know it, Gilo, I would have
never guessed that. No one does. Gillian Welch, I don't
like to share that about my past. Well, she's actually
born in New York, but she was raised in the valley.
She was an adopted daughter of parental TV writers. Her
mom and dad adopted parents were TV writers and they
(33:19):
wrote on The Carol Burnett Show. And so she lived
out out in Santa Monica, went to Crossroads, ding Dong
I grew up at Gillian Welch. It's Cash Warren and
Gillian Welch right in front of the But Gillian Welch,
Cash Warren, Tim Conway, Baron Davis right, what a crew.
(33:43):
Her music, though it is a weird mix between Appalachia,
Americana country and bluegrass, not southern California, not all the Valley.
She is truly a modern day musical Marvel finally won
a Grammy in twenty twenty. She probably should have fifty
of them. She went to Crossroads and then you see
Santa Cruz. Played in a goth band at you see
(34:07):
Santa Cruz. Okay, that's more valley. You see Santa Cruz.
That works. The name of the band was Cotton Dressed
Death World, but no no psychedelic second one psychedelic surf band.
But her roommate in college played her a blue gas
(34:28):
record and she had an epiphany and she had found
her music. She then took it to the Berkeley School
of Music in Boston because she was an already pretty
talented musician, and she met her life partner and musical
collaborator there, Dave Rawlings. I say life partner because it's
like Goldie Hawn and not Mary not married, but she's not.
(34:50):
It's not like a Lilith fair time, all right. I
got you t Bone. Burnett saw them performing this song,
Long Black Veil at the Grand Old Opry, and the
rest of the they say is history. She started making albums,
whether her husband Guy or whatever common law dude, Hey,
husband Guy, and they'll go four or five years without
making an album, you know when the Guardian and Pitchfork
(35:11):
will be doing. That is how they write this. She
was an associate producer of the Old Brother Where Art
Thou soundtrack, and sang two songs on the record as well.
I don't hear that. You don't notice that at all,
at all, not a bit. She's got her own label
now and all of her albums, including the Dave Rawlings stuff,
(35:34):
his solo stuff excellent. Sorry Dave, you know, Gillian. Sorry. Well,
they didn't know what to do when they started because
they've only want to be famous too, They've only performed
as a duo. They didn't know what to call themselves,
so they just called themselves. Gillian Welch, that's absolutely true. Yeah,
(35:55):
we are. You want to argue with my long neck
and my note chin. I think so. I think we
are going to call it all right. Then, at first,
Matt to the Valley Girl. At first people questioned, like, Hey,
what's this chick who grew up in la singing all
these Appalachian songs? But now don't nobody say nothing because
she is that good. Everybody fogerty Man, everybody wants to
work with her, though she has absolutely zero interest in
(36:19):
modern music. I told Alan Sandford to book her for
Beach Life Ranch and he sent them an email and
he got an email back from Gillian Welch that said,
we'ren't working right now. That was it. Yeah, but there's
a new album out that was a couple of years ago,
perhaps the next fall. Can we get you on the
ranch this year? Don't think so, y'all ain't ranch. I'm Ranch.
