We know his short notice. But don't you want to
see Matt?
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Don't I don't want to come see me?
Speaker 6 (02:03):
Don't you want to come out and see Matt? Come
by and see me. Sometime I'll be there too. It
is time for the final hour. Fun fat in the fact,
it's yeah, we're three fun fasts.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Fun fact.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
According to an old English time unit, a moment, one
moment actually has an allotted amount of time that much
ninety seconds. One moment was ninety seconds.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
It feels like a lot.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Right to me. A moment is like, you know, yeah, I.
Speaker 6 (02:34):
Give you ten fifteen. But you know we live in
the United States, Matt. We're not patient people.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
No, We're a quick cut society, no doubt about that.
I was walking into the liquor store while she was
walking out. We caught each other's gaze and I fell
instantly in love and that that's right.
Speaker 6 (02:51):
Hello, I love you? Was you tell me your name?
The microwave society?
Speaker 3 (02:56):
I love you? Won't just tell me your name?
Speaker 6 (03:01):
Quick hits, everybody hits. Yeah, we are going to talk
to Mick Cronin the very next segment, you see La
Hoops coach, dear friend of the show, Basketball Royalty, Petros
(03:22):
and money best show in town.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
He knows he's gonna join us. In the very next segment, the.
Speaker 6 (03:27):
Clippers are three and four and I thought Paul George
was hurting, but I guess he's back tonight.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
He's back tonight. I think he made his debut in
the last game, played average at best, first time back
to Los Angeles. Obviously, these season's only seven games old,
since he left to sign with Philadelphia in the offseason,
and after participating in I think like forty of their
playoff series, winning like one of them. I certainly hope
(03:57):
considering all the draft assets and young players they surrend
for his acquisition, they give him a hell of a
video tribute, and the crowd gives him a great standing ovation.
Speaker 6 (04:06):
I believe there will be that kind of love, given
what he accomplished as a Clipper and just how beloved
he was by the town. Although he's a little bit
like Moses who was unable to cross the river Jordan
with God's chosen people. He brought him there, but he's
(04:28):
not able to call the great into it dome with
the wall his own, which is a little unfortunate.
Speaker 7 (04:35):
Yes, kay, it's kind of a fun game if you're
inside into it and they do a tribute view to
you tonight. All the video of him sitting on the
bench and street clothes. You can count how many different outfits.
Cowi's back tonight too, right.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Oh no, Tyleru, I believe shared a question about how
he was progressing that he will not play this week.
That's three games, and then I noticed one of the
beat writers said, don't be fooled by that statement. He
said he would only update you on Kowhi's injury status
(05:10):
week by week.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Oh that's cool. Week by week.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Yeah, not like he's gonna come back next week. By
saying he's not gonna play this week. He's just not
gonna play this week.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Well, the Lakers are four and three.
Speaker 6 (05:19):
They're in Memphis and John Moran is hanging his nuts
on him like the fringe on top of a surrey,
and they wrap up their five game road truth. Better
hurry with the surrey and the fringe on the top, Matt.
The Rams are four and four, but they are hot.
McVeigh went on cow Herd. They got the big Monday
night showdown next week. And here is McVeigh on overcoming
(05:42):
adversity early in game.
Speaker 8 (05:44):
Tremendous credits to our players.
Speaker 9 (05:46):
Obviously, we put ourselves in that situation by a lot
of uncharacteristic errors, jumping off sides, giving them opportunities for
free plays, losing our poise where we lose.
Speaker 8 (05:55):
One of our best players.
Speaker 9 (05:56):
And there were some things structurally that they were doing
defensively that we weren't really putting our players in favorable spots.
So you just address the truth. You say, here's what's
going on. We're not gonna beat ourselves. We get the
possession coming out of the half. Let's continue to do
the things that are in alignment with playing quality football,
and our offense goes right down the field, makes it
a thirteen to ten game. Defense gets a stop. We
(06:17):
would have loved to have punched it in for a touchdown.
But three series later, it's thirteen to thirteen with two
offensive possessions and one defensive possession. And you know, we
did some things that were uncharacteristic. But I do think
this is a resilient group. They're mentally tough, they stay
in the fight, and in eight weeks we've had a
lot of different experiences that are reflective of that.
Speaker 6 (06:36):
Always inspiring Matt. The Chargers, of course, as you know,
are five and three. They got the Tennessee Titans on Sunday,
looking to win their third in a row, and they're
seven and a half point favorites at home. Hey, Scott
Boris is in the news, Matt.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
He is, and he is preening and parading around the
GM meetings because he is the agent for Juan Soto,
someone who's likely to secure at minimum a six hundred
million dollars guaranteed money contract, said that he will take
his time Will Sodo before signing with a team, indicated
he wants a thorough they take my time before making
(07:14):
a decision. Quote do the volume of interest and Wan's
desire to hear from everyone. I can't put a timeframe
on it, but it's going to be a very thorough
process for him. He wants to meet people person in
the he wants to talk with them, and he wants
to hear from them personally.
Speaker 6 (07:32):
So I'm not just gonna talk. What's so different about listen?
Is that so different about what people normally do.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
I'm not only going to talk, guys, I'm anna listen.
Speaker 6 (07:41):
I'm thinking about listening. The GM meetings are happening. They're
going to talk and listen there and San Antone today
and tomorrow. Dodgers GN Brandon Golmes spoke with the writers
today said the assumption right now is that Mookie Betts
will move back to the infield in twenty twenty five
where he's knee.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Did it's second base or shortstop? What about Gavin Lucks?
Speaker 3 (08:04):
What about Miguel ROAs he dyed his hair?
Speaker 2 (08:07):
What about right field? Who played right and play right field?
Speaker 3 (08:10):
But the hell gonna.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Take my time?
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Oh, here's Gomes. He was on the MLB Network earlier
today discussing sho haal Tony's injury and about why unlike
that Textosa were who had labor and surgery, says, no way,
show Hel'll be healthy in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Healthy in twenty twenty five, No way, Jose.
Speaker 10 (08:30):
We'll get into his rehab some and kind of see
where things are at. But you know, as he gets
going well well, obviously here on the side of caution
and be playing the long game here. But you know,
the long term prognosis is that it won't you know,
it won't be anything that affects his his pitching, you know,
long term.
Speaker 6 (08:49):
Gomes also talked about free agency and in particular, bring
it back to Oscar Hernandez.
Speaker 10 (08:55):
Tayo obviously meant a ton to this team. You saw
what was on the field, but he's impacting the clubhouse
the way you mentored younger guys. He's he's a special
guy on and off the field. So we'll continue to
have conversations with Tayo. We love him. He knows that,
you know, he's a you know, a big part of
what we.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Did this year.
Speaker 10 (09:15):
So we'll we'll keep talking and see how things play out.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
I'm such a big part of what we did. Why
is these numbers are so small? Why are you offering
me such a little money?
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Why did everybody leave during the home run derby?
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Where was everybody?
Speaker 8 (09:31):
Bourkat?
Speaker 3 (09:33):
I had to celebrate with my stranger friends.
Speaker 6 (09:39):
Oklahoma state coach Mike Gundy issued an apology why apologize?
You don't have to apologize like Kelsey's podcast Boo social
media today for his comments he made on Monday about
certain fans. I apologize to those who buy comments. During
Monday's media collum fanded mind dent was not to offend
(10:02):
any of our fans who sported us and this program
through the years.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
People that are negative and the voice in their opinion
are the same ones that can't pay their own bills. Yeah,
they're not taking care of themselves, they're not taking care
of their own family, they're not taking care of their
their their own job. That they have an obligation to
speak out and complain about others because it makes them
feel better, but then in the end, when they go
to bed at night, they're the same failure that they
(10:28):
were before they said anything negative about anybody else.
Speaker 8 (10:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
Period, You losero, sorry ass loser exactly. There's a period there,
and in the next page it says the end does
not say PostScript apology.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Damn it.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
And you lose.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
You know, you go to bed and you're just used
to losing.
Speaker 6 (10:51):
What did you accomplish to day? Nothing can't take care
of your family piece, So you are speaking of that.
USC is four and five, Speaking of losers, they're two
and five into Big ten with a bye week coming up.
They host Nebraska in two weeks, so big bye week.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
He sits in his office. He doesn't talk to anyone. Well,
come out. He doesn't interact with anyone.
Speaker 6 (11:15):
Scott Wolfe very emphatic yesterday. And you know, you don't
have to know that about Lincoln Riley to know that
he's not interacting with people. All you have to do
is watch the games. He stares at his little card
while all the assistants are with the offense or the
defense or the special teams are huddled up against the bench.
He only, maybe every once in a while, whispers to
(11:37):
the old pillow fart face.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
And that's it.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
That's it. It's not enough doing my laps, dad, that's it.
Speaker 6 (11:44):
Well, if you want to be inspired, UCLAs three and five,
two and four into Big ten.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
Here we go.
Speaker 6 (11:48):
They've won two in a row and they're nipping at
SC's colo. They're nipping at us. He's back burger.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
We just posted a new video on mister ski in
that he is Hollywood's best back burgers.
Speaker 6 (12:04):
I missed the days of business, So the Bruins are
home to I was that code. The Bruins are home
to Iowan Friday night. The Hawkeyes are a six and
a half point favorite at the Rose Bowl. Here's Kirk,
personal friend of Tim Kats, Kirk Farrence, with a lot
of praise for the brew Hands.
Speaker 11 (12:22):
What they've done the last three three games out and
they've really will take a good football team, real close quarterbacks,
really playing well, doing a good job leading them defensively.
They're extremely active, extremely aggressive, extremely athletic. And mentioned the
linebacker earlier at number forty nine, so listened to her
and he's a good football player. I don't know his
name exactly, but I know he can play and you
better have him accounted for each and every play.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Good football player.
Speaker 11 (12:45):
But all their guys really go hard to the ball.
Well all just you know, a tough football team to
play against and certainly playing the Rose Bowl. It's a
very historic menu, as all of you know, and it'll
be interesting to be be there for a for an
away game in conference.
Speaker 6 (12:58):
Play Man, that sounds like a guy's got a lot
of respect for UCLA right there.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
Well, sounds like a guy that got the memo, don't
be saying anything and then you lose to us, because then.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
That'll be bad. He does not want it to be bad.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
No, he doesn't want to be bad.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
None of us want it to be bad. No, Like, honestly,
we don't.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
I mean, what's bad? These winds are whipping. Is a
palm frog gonna fall on my head and knock me out?
I don't want it to be bad. Keep your head
on a swivel. I'm not gonna say anything.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
Protect your neck.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
I'm surprised he said anything, because you know, coach didn't
really declare that they said things that were negative about us.
It was just, hey, you say something and then you
lose and it'll be bad. So I'm surprised you didn't
just say, hey, next question, I don't want to get
This is crazy out here. What's going on.
Speaker 6 (13:46):
We'll be back with the Great Mic cronin centerpiece of
the show. Here to the people, Ucla Coach.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
Next, Petro, Some Money, haym five seventy LA Sports. We
live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. Remember tomorrow's a big
day as we are back on the road after nearly
a month hiatus. It is the BJS Live Remote two
(14:12):
to five pm, going into Thursday night football BJ's and
Huntington Beach right there on the corner of Beach and Edinger,
right off the four or five Freeway, less than a
quarter of a mile from the Beach Boulevard exit, easily accessible,
massive parking lot prizes to give away happy hour specials.
It's all tomorrow, Huntington Beach, corner of Beach and Edinger.
(14:33):
Two to five pm. Petros and Money Live.
Speaker 6 (14:36):
And Matt joining us right now a hero on the
Petros and Money Show. The Cincinnati Kids some call um
year six at UCLA though taking his notorious turn on
Sunset Boulevard. Oh yeah, it is mid Cronin. The Bruins
have reloaded their roster. They look good and their season
(14:59):
open went over Rider on Monday. They played New Mexico
on Friday in Las Vegas. Big Ten Play starts next
month on your Southern California, Toyota Dealer celebrity hotline. It
is one of the toughest coaches in all of America
(15:21):
and a fine man and developer of young basketball student minds.
Mick Cronin on Peterson Moudy, what's cracking, coach? How are
you welcome?
Speaker 2 (15:31):
How are you.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
Well?
Speaker 8 (15:35):
Since our last talk? The Dodgers got the World Series. Yes,
you know that's a good thing. And now and we
don't have to listen to any more politicians. That's what
I'm excited. I'm just playing normal.
Speaker 6 (15:51):
You know, you don't like, you don't miss those commercials.
You don't like getting a local politician commercial, rebuttal commercial
and then like a cold and then some kind.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
Of it's like a colonoscapede so zimpic commercial.
Speaker 8 (16:05):
Right, oh my, it's unbelievable. I mean, enough enough with
the ads. I can't I couldn't take it. And it's
everybody's grew up in a middle class family or on
a farm with their grandmother. I get enough.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
We are We are on to U c l A Basketball.
It was a beautiful reprieve. It was on FS one,
of course, it was on our airwaves as well. It
was the start of the season. Uh, it was a
dominant start. You have some new faces, uh, some transfers.
You have some guys that were expecting big jumps from
and really felt like it it went as well as
maybe it could have. I'm sure you can point some
(16:43):
things out that you'd like to see cleaned up, but man,
it was a It was a real fun game to watch,
and it looks like you got yourself quite a team
headed into this season.
Speaker 8 (16:49):
Coach, Well, look, we you know, we added six transfers,
and you know all those guys are proven betteran guys. Well,
we tried to do is get guys that would that
wanted to come to UCLA to get better, to achieve
their dreams, and they also come to UCLA so we
(17:09):
could put them all in a group where we could
become a team and win. So that was your goal,
you know, my first really it was my first foray
into being a general manager or so to speak. Try
to be Stan cass and and you know, put it
all together and you try. You know, that was our
main thing was doing so trying to get guys that
(17:32):
would play to win. Sure, we have more talent. I
think I like our character though. The most we passed
the ball really well. Teams that pass like each other,
and usually guys that pass have really good attitudes. They're mature,
they understand the game is about winning, not about stat lines. So,
but look, gay long way to go is Doug o'neils,
(17:54):
you know, the great horse trainer friend of ours in
the program. You know, he wants to tell me, great win,
great win. We want a maiden fifty, you know, we
want a maiden claiming race. Let's not get too excited.
We didn't win a derby on Monday, so it's a
long way to go.
Speaker 6 (18:11):
But it did feel like opening day at del Mar.
Everybody was out there looking pretty good, preening and prancing.
How long does it take usually, I mean in a
modern era or any time when you bring in young
people or a freshman class, how long does it take
for you to figure out the identity of the basketball team.
Speaker 8 (18:35):
Well, we're still you know, I think we've passed. We
got a lot of good guard play, we can shoot,
and we're passing the ball. Well, we've got to make
sure we're tough enough. That's you know, that's where William
Kyle are transferred from South Dakota State and Eric Daily
there are strongest guys, you know, Tyler Billodeau like, we've
(18:57):
got to make sure that we're physically tough enough. I
wasn't happy with our defensive rebounding because I don't believe
you can win big if you don't have If you
know you're a football guy, Patros, you got to win
the line of scrimmage, physical battles. You know you can throw,
you can draw up all them plays you want. You
(19:18):
keep losing the line of scrimmage, you give up the
two hundred plus rushing yards you're losing. You know, it's
just the way it is. So we got to win
the line of scrimmage. Physical will be tough. But I
like our level. I like our talent. But the real
answer to your question, but okay, you're talking about how
long does it take them together? I think the good part.
(19:40):
Now we're all doing this like we're all in the
same page. Every school, every college has eight to twelve
new players because we're because the portal has been in
effect and there's so many and the transferring and on
top of graduating or going pro. Everybody's kind of in
(20:01):
the same boat. So it's not like you're going to
play a team we played New Mexico Friday. They lost
a great transfer to his freshman of the year in
a Mountain West. They lost another transfer. They went to
the nca Tournament, they won the mount West Championship, they
lost two transfers, and they lost another guy to graduation.
So they got talent, but they're they you know, my
(20:24):
friend Richard Patino's got the same issue as the rest
of us. We've got to put all our new transfers,
you know, together and turn them into a team. So
it's I just liked that everybody's going through this instead
of like just one team.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
Yeah, you mentioned h Kyle, who's South Dakota. He came
off the bench, but you're starting five. Was Dylan Andrews,
who we know well. And then you got what Oregon State,
Louisville USC, and Oklahoma State all coming together? Is there?
What's the challenge?
Speaker 8 (20:56):
You know?
Speaker 2 (20:56):
What is there?
Speaker 3 (20:57):
A secret?
Speaker 1 (20:57):
Is there?
Speaker 3 (20:58):
It's basketball? Is it hard hard to get these guys
to get on that same page and to do what
you want when you're looking at it that much difference
in who you're throwing out there at tip.
Speaker 8 (21:09):
Well, I don't think.
Speaker 11 (21:10):
I think.
Speaker 8 (21:11):
Look, the good part about this is if you have
the finances. Is you do get to pick who? You know,
you get to pick. I mean, so you could go
pick and try and get the biggest name guy that
wants the most money and maybe he doesn't care if
he wins, he wants to. He just wants wants to
(21:31):
get as much money as he can. Are you can
you know? My thing is let's get guys that are
still dreaming of the NBA, Guys that think that we
can help their development, Guys that are value a degree
from UCLA, and guys that you know that are have
some character and understand you. You know, as herm Ed
would what Hermed would say, you.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
Play win the game.
Speaker 8 (21:54):
There you go, you play to win the game. You
played to win the game. So you know you do
get to pick, you, Matt, who you you know, who
you grab in the portal? Right? Who you bring in?
So why not bring in winners?
Speaker 3 (22:09):
You know?
Speaker 8 (22:09):
I grew up son of a high school coach, but
also thirty five year scout with the Atlanta Braves. My
father's in a scouting Hall of Fame, So I saw
the Braves. You know, I got to know guys like
Bobby Cox, and I've watched those guys put that whole
thing together, and when they were really big about if
(22:30):
they brought a free agent in, who he was, what
kind of person he was, you know, and whether it
was Greg Maddox as a pitcher, Terry Pendleton as as
a third baseman. You know, guys who are just great
guys that wanted to help your team win. So we
tried to do that in our portal pickups.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
The great mc cronin is our guest.
Speaker 6 (22:52):
You see LA Basketball taking on New Mexico next, and
you mentioned Tyler Billadeau real quick, the guy from Oregon
State coach. Uh overall, Uh, what does he bring in?
And it feels like, uh, he must be pretty geeked
up not being in Corvallis.
Speaker 8 (23:11):
Yeah, he's he's loving late. He went straight California. He
got his n I O money. He Uh, he told
me they took his car because he transferred, so he
had to get a car. So he went straight California.
He got him, he got it, he got a Tesla. Uh.
You know, he's loving life. Uh, he's loving life in
(23:34):
in Westwood. How could you not? But Tyler is a
great kid. We I think I think we we definitely
stole one he is because of being a little bit
of obscurity at Oregon State, which the rest of the
country outside the PAC twelve just didn't know who he was.
(23:55):
And there's so many guys in the portal, and then
you have your geniuses that ranked it, you know, the
portal rankings, top transfers. And I laughed like like he was,
you know, he and Kobe Johnson went into poort like
there immediately, you know, one on one a on my list,
you know. But I've obviously had the luxury of seeing
those guys play for the last two and three years.
(24:16):
So Tyler Billadeau can score guys. And you know, at
the end of the you know, as the late great
Bill Walton said, you know, everybody wants to talk about defense.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Score you better.
Speaker 8 (24:28):
Scoring is the name of the game. And he can
shoot it in. He can make guarded shots. He got
a lot of ki ki vandaway and you can face
up and shoot it right in your face. Got a
high release. It'll be hard to defend shot because if
he can get it off, he's making eight nine out
of ten fifteen feet and in. So you know, you're
(24:48):
a lot better coach, guys. When that ball goes into basket.
It's amazing. Your IQ goes up. Now. Yeah, it just
you become really smart when that thing in a basket.
So I had to have him. He was the one
guy in the portal. We had to have him.
Speaker 3 (25:06):
Oh he's like Hobby Lopez when your dad found him.
You know, you find the one that they got away
from everybody else. There you go, we hear we're kind
of hearing it. I don't know if you're hearing it.
Coach about football and the shift to the Big Ten,
and oh, look at these guys. They had to go
to Penn State one weekend and then all the way
out to Maryland the next weekend, and just kind of
(25:27):
I know, you don't want to look too far ahead
of your schedule, but I'm sure you've got to lay
out all the travel. It looks it looks all right,
right Like it seems like the Big Ten, at least
in the regular season, sort of tried to minimize how
many times you got to really kind of swing out
of town and maybe every other week sort of situation.
Speaker 8 (25:44):
Yeah, they did the best they could for us, and
they're gonna do that. And that's really all I have
to say about that. Guys, I just don't believe in excuses.
Speaker 4 (25:54):
You know.
Speaker 8 (25:55):
The only what I can control is trying to keep
our non league schedule on the West coast. Problem for
me now is the CBS Sports Classic, we have to
go back and play in New York. Other than that
we got we purposely got Gonzaga and Arizona, uh so
we could stay on the West Coast. So my only
(26:15):
concerned of the travel, guys, is the totality of it,
because I'm worried about the NCAA tournament. That's I mean,
that's that's what they that's where it's what you get
paid to do. You're the head coach at U c
l A. You're trying to win that win that tournament,
and uh they did us a good. You know. One
thing I was concerned about was I didn't want to
be back East on the last week of the season
(26:37):
because then you're just gonna have to stay there and
go to Indianapolis for the Big Ten tournament and then
you you know, who knows, if hopefully you're in the
NCAA tournament, We're where do you go? Where do you
get sent? So you know, you could be out there forever,
you know, So that's it. So I just worry more
about March, the totality of it. You know, we'll do
(26:58):
everything we can to mitigate it. But look, you know
this is just the what. Look, we're in the pro
sports world now, we're flying on private planes. Guys got
a whole road in themselves. We're traveling our dietitian, our trainer,
our strength coach, We're bringing in massage people. I mean,
it looks it, you know. So I don't really buy
(27:20):
I just don't buy it all, man. I just you know,
I did start coaching in the nineties, which now is
old days. You know. You never you say that that
was old days, you know, where kids didn't have cell phones.
They we definitely didn't have dietitians. It wasn't unlimited food,
you know. And somehow, you know, Michael Jordan's survived, you know,
(27:44):
the brutal old rules of college basketball for three years
and still made it to be Michael Jordan's. So man,
these guys got they got a pretty good life. So uh,
you know, again, I don't I just I just don't
buy into the use of the travel stuff.
Speaker 3 (28:02):
The great mc cronin as they get ready for New Mexico.
Last one from me coach. I know, we get excited
about all the new faces and how well they performed
in other places and now they're coming together here. But
it's fun to watch your your guys from last year.
The blocks from from Marastefanovitch off the bench and man,
I know it may not pop in the box score,
but Dylan Andrews did the shot just looked really good
(28:24):
in that debut.
Speaker 8 (28:27):
Well, his mid range has always been rock solid. Trying
to improve his three point shooting. But look, experience matters, guys.
We all know this in every sport. You know, did
the Dodgers how many rookies really helped them win the
World Series? How many rookies are going to really help
the Clippers. Well they can't because they don't have any
(28:48):
draft picks till but you know, it's just how many
rookies really impact, how many young players impact, And you
know it's just you got to let guys improve. I mean,
you know, we're hurting some young guys. Trent Perry's gonna
play for us as a young guy, and he has
(29:09):
an unbelievable future. But in this era, it's really tough
to be a freshman because people have plugged in their
holes with transfers and the old days of you know,
you got to you gotta play a bunch of young
guys because you you know, eventually your team graduates or
goes pro and there is no more rebuilding with young guys.
(29:31):
I mean I had to do it last year. We
had no money, you know. But that those days are over.
I think now coaches are just they didn't have money,
just promised it out and the hand of their athletic
director of the bill and said, hey, here's my here's
what we paid. Everybody figured it out, you know, because
everybody got you know, six day transfers. It's just harder
(29:52):
for young guys. But to your point of our returning
younger guy, sure they're better. I mean Sebastian max better,
Dylan's better. It died is better. You know, I'm so excited.
He blocked three shots. He's stronger, you know, he's he's
probably gonna have an awesome four year career at u
c l A, you know, and that's a that's a
(30:14):
good thing. You got to have some guys like that,
you know. Everybody's not want and done. So yeah, that's
just improvement. I mean, uh, that's why we're red shirting
some guys. I still want to be able to develop
some players, especially Southern California players, guys, and with West
Coast kids. You know, even with the portal and all this,
(30:34):
it's just it's still important for us to have a
big footprint at u c l A with Southern California players.
Speaker 6 (30:42):
The great strength of Mick cronin the stan casting and
Dave Roberts of u c l A basketball. He puts
the team together and then he coaches them hard. Like
the Dodgers, expectations are high in Westwood. Coach understands and
he doesn't make excuses for bringing in massage people. We
appreciate your coach, have a great, great year, and we
(31:04):
will talk to you soon. We we always enjoy our conversations.
Means a lot to us, and the listeners appreciate it.
Speaker 8 (31:10):
All right, we'll touch base in December. We'll get to
have our check up.
Speaker 6 (31:13):
All right, Yes, that's right, the holiday checkup. There goes Cron.
Speaker 3 (31:19):
There we go.
Speaker 6 (31:19):
You know you know what else herm Edwards said, aside
from you play to win the game, he also said,
I can't believe we lost the Eastern Michigan. We didn't
show up.
Speaker 3 (31:30):
He did say that he also had Jade and Daniels
for how long?
Speaker 6 (31:34):
Yeah, and then Ontario Pierce went on and the running
back to Mahata.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
Exactly and then the uh seems like he coached to
develop the players so they can win the game. Supposed
to go into LSU winning a Heisman and then being
a favorite for the MVP in the NFL and the
rookie season.
Speaker 6 (31:51):
But hey, hey, Antonio Pierce was able to survive that storm,
make it all the way to the Raiders. Dead Alive
Guy Birthday in the Day coming up next. Always a
great conversation with Mick Cronan and we appreciate it. No
draft picks, but the Clippers still coming up at the
top of the hour. Thank you for listening, everybody. The
(32:16):
Petro Send Money Show mercifully coming to an end, not
before you get your dead and Alive Guy Birthday of
the Day. A big thank you to Mick Crone and
a big thank you to James Worthy. You can podcast
our show on the iHeartRadio app or stream at Live.
It sounds great on the app. Tonight they don't have
(32:36):
draft picks, but there is a game Clippers versus an
embiadless seventy six ers.
Speaker 2 (32:42):
Now, Matt, you got the dead guy birthday of the.
Speaker 3 (32:44):
Day and app dude, it seems appropriate for today. Happy
It would have been one hundred and seventy third to
Charles Henry Dow, founder of Dow Jones and Company, founder
of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and by the founder
of the Wall Street Journal, worked his way up from
a shop boy to being a reporter. Was a damn
(33:07):
good reporter, so the Providence Star hired him to be
their editor when he was just twenty six years old
and eighteen eighty Dow left Providence for the big town. There,
he hired his friend Edward Davis Jones to work with
him at the Wall Street Financial News. The two decided
that Wall Street needed another financial news bureau, so they
started their own agency, Dow Jones and Company. In November
(33:27):
of eighteen eighty two, put out an afternoon, two page
summary of the day's financial news called the Customer's Afternoon Letter.
It became the financial news source for investors. In eighteen
eighty nine, they transformed their two page news summary into
a real newspaper. The first issue of the Wall Street
Journal appeared July eighth, eighteen eighty nine, cost two cents
for one issue or five dollars for a one year subscription.
(33:48):
Dow was the editor of the paper and said its
position was quote to give fully and fairly the daily news,
attending the fluctuations in prices of stocks, bonds, and some
classes of commodities. It will aim steadily at being a
paper of news and not a paper of opinions. Had
a private wire to Boston Telegraph, connections to d C.
(34:09):
Philly and Chicago. Correspondence in cities all over the country,
including London. Married, no kids. His last editorial was written
in April nineteen ought two. He died eight months later
at fifty one, from a heart attack. Happy Birthday, Charles Dow.
Speaker 6 (34:25):
Artural Sandoval would be seventy five years old today, and
he is because he's alive. Arturo Sendival, superstar, Latin jazz
Afro Cuban jazz legend and the subject of a great film,
the HBO classic for Love or Country. More on that
(34:45):
at a moment. Born near Havana, he was a musical prodigy.
As a young man, learned the trumpet and the drums.
Cuban National School of the Arts. He created a collaboratory
relationship with Dizzy Gillespie. He had a meeting with and
(35:08):
Dizney Gillespie, the great trumpet player, immediately recognized Arturo Sandoval's
musical genius. He toured Most Cubans couldn't get anywhere, but
Arturo could. And one time he was touring the world
with Disney Gillespie. In nineteen eighty nine in Athens while
(35:30):
playing with a un orchestra, and Disney Gillespie helped him
defect to the United States Embassy wid the fact.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
I told you we should have never let him go.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
We should have never let him plead the horn. You
let him plead the horn all over the world.
Speaker 6 (35:49):
He tasted the taste outside of Cuba. We should have
left him here at Mauriel Harbor. Took him about nine
years to get his American citizenship. Arturo Sandola has performed
with everybody. Obama gave him a Medal of Freedom Obama.
(36:12):
Oh wait, next month he is slated for the Kennedy
Center Honors.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
Oh nice.
Speaker 6 (36:18):
Yeah, he did the score for Mambo Kings. Yes, ten
Emmys and a Grammy or ten Grammys.
Speaker 2 (36:26):
And an Emmy.
Speaker 6 (36:28):
And he taught at f i U and Whitworth University.
In Spokane.
Speaker 3 (36:34):
I want to start off shoish.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
Hey, how to dare you? Matt? I won't have it.
I won't have it, bes word.
Speaker 3 (36:45):
I'm not going to attag a guy who's freaking Cuban.
Speaker 6 (36:48):
It just attack that Kubano right. Come see us tomorrow.
We'll be live at Bjayson Huntington Beat starting in two.
You're required to be there.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
Don't miss it.
Speaker 8 (37:00):
