LA Sports and streaming on the iHeartRadio while rids up.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
The longest running afternoon sports show in the city. No
congratulations necessary.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
All traces of Fred Rogan have been removed.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
This is Petros in Money, Thank You, Thank You, hosted
by Petros papadae.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Gas terrible person, He's the worst and Matt money Smith
the pipes, the pipes, the pipe. Don't miss an episode.
We're with you.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Yeah, follow the Petros In Money Show wherever you get
your podcasts now Here's Petrose Papadaecus and Matt money Smith.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Hoday, we see the beauty within and cannot say no
tragging everybody and welcome. It is the one and only
Petros and Money Show on AM five seventy on Ice Sports,
your home of the Dodgers. The Dodgers play next Tuesday
(01:09):
live from Tokyo. They are there right now, ladies and gentlemen,
and David Vasse will join us in the very next
hour or yeah, the next hour to discuss his trip
what they've done so far. Allegedly there's a big time
sushi dinner that just went down, and we will have
(01:31):
all the details on that. Of course, our schedule tomorrow
we have Clippers versus the Atlanta Hawks. Pregame at three thirty,
tip off is at four thirty, and UCLA will play
tomorrow in the Big Ten Tournament. That's where Matt is.
The Big Ten Tournament continues. UCLA will play in their
(01:53):
first game in the Big Ten Tournament eleven thirty on
am FI seventy. Get that early by all the cards
fell right for the Bruins. They got an early buy
and they will play in the quarters tomorrow. So as
far as that goes tomorrow, the Petrosen Money Show will
just be on for a very short period after Ucla
and before the Clippers. That is schedule talk, no time,
(02:19):
There's never any time I don't have time to study.
I'll never get into Standford schedule talk, and Matt is
not here. But our guest today on your Southern California
Toyota Dealers Celebrity guest host microphone is George Reister, a
(02:40):
real star in media, beloved from sill Mar Go Spartan's
Buckley to Silmar to Oregon. Still loves the Ducks amidst
their massive success. Of course of Jacksonville Jack warr and
a hell of a Wikipedia photograph. I mean really good.
(03:01):
Mostly we love him here for his radio acumen and
his argumentative ways. We will be here until seven together.
What a dream. Go ducks, it is your to go reister.
Oh once again on the Petterson Money Show. Yeah, that's
a hell of a Wikipedia photo, isn't that. I mean,
(03:21):
look at you? Yeah, I like that. And George took
the liberty of bringing his daughter to work today, his daughter, Peyton,
who has the same last name first name as Matt's
daughter Peyton, but not Peyton Smith Peyton Reister, that would
be awkward. Well, I mean, yeah, but your daughter's here
(03:44):
on our way to volleyball practice, and it's good to
have her. Yes, damn, that's loud, Ronnie. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
And and we have a am my other daughter birthday
in two days.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Okay, yes? Is she coming later or I mean that
really does? I mean I work a certain kind of
way here at work, you know, and Peyton's presence here's
a bit of a hindrance to me, you know. I
mean she's over there like looking at me like something's
gonna happen, and something is gonna happen. I mean, this
is this is a four hour radio show. Most of
(04:21):
the stuff I do in this room, if I walk
outside that door with all the working people and start
doing those things, I could be taken to HR in anymoment. Yes,
So either way, George is here. What George has going
on right now is very interesting. He's not doing the
overnight radio anymore. I'm serious. I think it just it
blew his mind and he couldn't take it anymore. He
did it for four years overnights with Sirius. We had
(04:43):
Jonas Knox on yesterday, Jonah, and we'll have them on
again tomorrow. Jonas of course sports radio. Yeah, three to
six in the morning every single day, two pros and
a cup of Joe and I do that show once
a week. I do that show once a week, every
day at five in the morning, and it knocks me
off my skis to get up and do all that stuff.
(05:04):
To sleep. I think he lives and operates on what
you would consider to be a series of naps throughout
the day. And I think I've done that too in
the past. But what George is doing now not doing
the radio. Right now, you have your Unafraid show on YouTube,
and it's really interesting because a lot of people start
a podcast and they talk into a camera and they
(05:26):
give their take about this, this, this and this, and
then that's their podcast and they get tired of doing
it and it kind of goes away. But you've kept
this thing going for a long time. You've innovated it,
you've really kind of perfected it, and you're you have
a name in football that people respect, so you can
get an interview with anybody and explain to the listeners.
(05:48):
I mean, you've been traveling around from Dan Lanning to
Dabo Sweeney. You've been going to all the college football
cathedrals around the country and doing long form interviews on
YouTube with these various coaches. Is that correct to say? Yes,
that is correct to say. So.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
It's been really cool because I've gotten a chance to
get a chance to form some relationships throughout the years
with these college football coaches. And then also they have
and college coaches are like people in life. They don't
like to miss out. And when they've seen that you've
interviewed other people, they're like, oh, well, have you ever
talked to me?
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Yeah? That's the recruit thing. All you need is one
mission and offer them. Why they offer We're gonna offer
him too. Now you got seven offers, you know, as
opposed to just the one that's pretty So who was
the first one you did?
Speaker 4 (06:35):
So the first one I did was Dan Lanning okay,
and that's up right now. Yes, yes, when did you
do that? I actually did it in February, I think February.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
And then they made the contract announcement around the same
time that it came out. Yep, good time, yes, exactly.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
So, so that one is out and so they'll come
out every single Wednesday at eleven thirty am Pacific. Next
week is Jed Fish from up there at the University
of Well you talk to him yet, yeah, yeah, yes,
I sat down with him.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Listen.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
That was my ironically, that was my first time to Washington.
I've never been to the No, no, no, it wasn't
my first time to Seattle. It was my first time
in Husky Stadium.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
You never played there at ORTA Nope, nope, you caught
one of those weird years.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
Yes, yes, so it was. They played in Eugene the
year I'm sorry, they played in Washington the r redshirty
in nineteen ninety nine, and then the next year they
I think they were off the schedule, and then they
played in Eugene and then I was gone. You left
after three years, well sorry, I left after four years.
(07:42):
So they were off the schedule twice, off the.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Schedule twice, played in Eugene twice. You never played in
Husky Stadium. I played in there once. Yeah, it was
Rashaan she I think it's sweet. They had lawyer Malloy
running around back there, Jason Charak that juiced up Serbian
defensive end. They had some really good players. But it's nice.
It's right on the lake.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
Oh yeah. And the coaches offices. I don't know if
they were then, but there's no it's very special place.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
So the coach's offices are literally inside the stadium, and
their offices double as a suite for the for the
coaches families, so that's where they sit during the game.
So there's like a little bar area there and everything
in all the coaches offices. We did the off the
interview in Jeff Fish's office. Great views. You can see
(08:30):
the lake in the back. And then I went down
to Arizona State with Kenny Dillingham. Kenny will yep, love him,
love him. He's he's a ball of enthusiasm. And then
I went to Clemson with Dabo Sweeney. I had some
thoughts about Davosweeney before I got there, And what were
your thoughts?
Speaker 2 (08:48):
Uh, what kind of thoughts did you have? Bad thoughts
about Dabo? Yes, why you don't like a walk on
tight end from Alabama with a thick neck sprinting out
there all hard.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
So so I knew I love that part of it.
You know, walk on stories are always dope. But what
I did so his comments about nil and oh oh oh,
if these players get paid, I'll go do something else.
As you're making ten million dollars a year, got one
hundred million dollar contract. So he clarified the comments and
(09:19):
now I and he was like, education saved my life,
and we're prioritizing He was like, the players should get
paid as much as they possibly can, but we're prioritizing
their you know, the the football part of it over
the education part of it. This is a dude who
was poor as hell, walked on well Sorr. He went
(09:40):
to Alabama, Mom slept in his dorm with him for
three years, in the bed with him, Like that's how
poor they were. And so he's got this education saved
my life and gave me an opportunity thing.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
And you ask him about his weird brother. No, I
didn't ask what brother he's got A brother's been like
arrested a bunch of time that has to make a
comment like every time, like my brother has made mistakes
in his life.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
So I mean, it's it's it's understandable. He came from
like a broken home with with addiction and and violence
and everything else. So yes, I can understand how deep
with huh yeah real dap so almost shed a tear
at the end.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
So you've done like three of these, no, no.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
No four, And then we got UNLV coming up. We
got u yep, Kyle Whittingham over at Utah coming up
April tenth.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
We used to get along really well, but after the
way the camerasing stuff played out, we don't get along
so good at it.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
And and and and I can understand you being on
TV your frustration.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
There because he screwed us bad.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
Yeah because oh, because they were pretending for for for
two years.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Yeah it's not okay, yeah, and it's not it's not
a way to do business correct.
Speaker 4 (10:51):
And and if you were going to do that on
a nationally televised game. You should say, like to the
to the people who are sticking their neck out, Yes, if.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
You're going to run a walk on out there and
you warmed up the quarterback and then he comes out
and puts a yellow jersey on.
Speaker 4 (11:09):
We should at least at least tell them, hey, you
might want to prep for you know, something else happening.
Even if you don't want to say it the way,
it doesn't leak a you know, because there's.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
A way to do it. So everybody. Everybody has their
own way to do it. So there's a way to
do it. That's not what Kyle Whittingham did.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
So what were you guys doing when they walk nothing?
We handled a pig farmer.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Bryson barn Yes, yes, yeah, Well the story goes like this,
and I don't mind telling it. Okay. We had Washington
State Utah at Washington State a couple of years ago,
and Utah is playing really good football. They had all
those great tight ends, you know, Kinkaid or one of
them was there. And of course I got along for
(11:57):
years and defended Kyle Whittingham. I love scaling and all that,
and this particular broadcast I have no control over it.
We're not up there. Yeah, okay, but we still do
everything the same. Yeah, and we're still we still communicate
the same and all that. So, but he obviously wasn't
very happy about it, and that's okay. Oh, he wasn't
(12:19):
happy that the broadcast for whatever reason, the calls were awkward.
But I got all the information all that, and there
was no indication that Cam Rising wasn't going to play.
We kept checking with the people throughout and of course
now we're getting ready for the game. We have eight
cameras all over the place. I'm watching all the warm ups,
watching Cam Rising warm up. No one had said anything
(12:40):
about it. They were coming off a bye week. There
had been no talk that Cam Rising was hurt at all.
He was in full uniform, doing the whole thing. And
then they come out of the tunnel to start the game.
We were getting ready to introduce Cam Rising and run out,
you know, because he's there starting on offense. We have
the graphic up and all that, and they're hiding him
in a huddle and they run out with the other
(13:03):
quarterback basically to deceive Washington State because they could, which
is fine. I mean, that's those within the rules to do. That.
But for us like you, you've got to tell us
you're not going to start cam rising, whether you tell
us five minutes before the broadcast, and all the stuff
we edited all week this will be for cam Rising
(13:24):
and all that is scrapped. But still at least we
have the camera on the right kid. Yeah, and we
get to honor that kid for his very first start.
The big farmer walk on and all ended up having
a great college football story. Transfer and all you need
is five minutes. I needed five minutes, and instead they
just let us die and then turned around. Well, and
(13:47):
I probably made a mistake. Not during the game. During
the game, we're fine. We just they brought out Barnes.
Our whole truck flipped their lid. I had a brand
new play by play guy as brand new and uh,
well he ended up getting promoted. He does a great
job to break him in. Yeah, but he does it,
I think Jeff Levering and and he does a great job.
(14:08):
And he was fine, and I just said, hey, we
had no indication of this, you know, And we went
on and called the game, uh, which was fine. But
there's a lot of bitterness, of course, because we look stupid.
And after the game. I probably made a mistake. I
got a call from John Canzano, who's a friend of
you know. But look when I when something happens, I
called John Canzano and I asked him what happened, and
(14:29):
he tells me same thing. He asked me what happened,
and I told him what happened, you know, And then
of course Whittingham goes, well, they weren't even here, so
then it becomes an argument about you know, if you're
here or not, but that it really had nothing to
do with it. She wasn't going to run up into
the booth and tell us that he wasn't going to play.
It was it was. It was a calculated deception, and
(14:50):
they kept saying that he was going to play.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
Well, that was just the first time, and then it
happen right or the entire year and then the next
year too.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Yeah, at Newbury from Newbury Park, cam Rising. And it
was upsetting to me because I really loved and defended
and respect and still do Kyle Whittingham's program. And then
he got into it like later with Tim Brando, like
we went there and was like, no, you're gonna tell
us sooner what Petrols did the movie and they're going
back and forth, and it's like, dude, I didn't do
(15:22):
anything to you. I was trying to protect my brand
new play by play guy and our producer you know
who got left and hung out to dry. All these
people here are working hard and trying to impress their bosses,
and you guys went out of your way to make
us look stupid. And it wasn't really about us, but
my god, you got to give us a heads up,
(15:42):
regardless of whether or not you like the way we're
doing the broadcast or not. Where are your partners? And
you got to tell us who the starting quarterback is
before the kick. So you tell Kyle Whittingham that I
still remember what he did. Okay, So, and I thought
he's going to retire. I keep waiting on him to retire,
you know. I wanted to give him a pass. They
just had those two players die tragically and back to
(16:02):
back years. Yeah. I love Kyle Whittingham, you know, but
that that really soured me on how they handle their
business with working with us. Yeah, you know. So, and
then we have Miami with Mario Cristobaul. You're going to Miami, yep,
Mike Norville over at Florida State Tahassee. Yeah, you have.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
Yes, I have been to Tallahassee and and we have
Marcus uh oh, Lord Freeman. Yes, but that's gonna be
probably in May. You're gonna go to South Bend. Yes,
so you are making a college Football World Tour, Yes, sir,
right now talking to all these guys. It's actually super
dope because they give you access to the facility. They
(16:48):
they they take you around and you get a chance
to like you said, or well, like you said to
me in the past, where you get a chance to
get the pulse of the team, pulse of the stadium,
pulse of everything around there. And it's actually one of
the most unique experiences because you get a chance to
see it from the inside and sometimes you see things
(17:09):
you're like, okay, okay, what's the head networks?
Speaker 2 (17:12):
Like the giant creating machines hanging from the sky at
the University of Nebraska in nineteen eighty eight. Are you
sure they were creating machines? We got a lot of show,
a lot to get to. Don McClain is gonna join
us in the very next segment. He's live from the
Big Ten Tournament, that is where Matt Smith is. That
is where Tim Kates is. We're gonna talk some college
football today. That's what George and I do, so we'll
(17:35):
get into the landscape of college football. But we got
plenty of basketball talk. And the most important thing the
Dodgers are in Japan. They have landed in Japan. I
don't know if there were the million people that Dave
Roberts predicted would be there on the tarmac that were
actually I mean I saw an empty tarmac from a
(17:58):
picture that David Vasse sat. But we will get the latest.
David Massey is going to wake up from that sushi
dinner they had last night that Yamamoto and Sasaki and
Otani bought for everybody. They're gonna wake up in the
morning and call us in the very next hour and
tell us what the latest is in Japan where the
(18:20):
Dodgers are waiting for their historic series. Just two games
with the Cups and again the Big Ten Tournament is
raging on. But UCLA is not playing today. They don't
play till tomorrow. The quarterfinals are the Big Ten Tournament
at eleven thirty on AM five seventy and Jonas and
I'll do like a half hour or something like that.
(18:43):
Ronnie Fossu is here, Colin Yee is here. Peyton Reister
is a fact checking person with headphones on that aren't connected.
She's wearing headphones, but they're not connected to the station.
They're connected like to Olivia Rodrigo or something like that, or.
Speaker 4 (19:01):
Like some Billie Eilish or something right now. And she
didn't know how to read until she was like a teenager, Peyton, No,
who Billy, she's fourteen, Billy, Billy Eily's didn't learn how
to read until.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
She was telling me Billie Eilish was illiterate.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
Yes, because her and her brother, their parents they did
this this type of learning that like they teach you
what you're interested in, so they weren't interested in reading,
and that's when they learn to read.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Even if you're not interested in reading. I feel like
it's kind of a fundamental. You know, reading is fundamental.
I think reading is important just for your own safety.
I mean, like if you have one way. Yeah, yeah,
that's a good point. Yeah they probably mean. I mean
they they probably learn learned site pyche words. Is they
got it. I'm a little shot, George. You know, all
(19:50):
the education stuff you talk about all that that teared
jerking story just told about Dabo swinging in our first segment,
I'd have thought you would have touch your daughter. How
to read? Peyton? Do you know how to read? We'll
be back with Don McLain live from the Big Ten
Basketball Tournament on am FI seventy LA Sports, your home
(20:11):
of UCLA hoops Dodger season about to get started. Crack it, everybody,
Welcome back. It's Petrosen Money on AMPHI seventy LA Sports.
George right, Sir is in four Matt Muddy Smith, who's
out in Indianapolis with our next guest. Of course, we're
live everywhere where on the iHeartRadio app. Make sure you
hit the follow button on the app so you can
(20:32):
get the latest notifications. Also get us on demand the
petros and Money Show podcast. Make sure to podcast the
show if you miss it. But right now it is
time for our number one guy, especially this time of year,
the Great Don McClain on the Southern California Toyota Dealer
(20:52):
Celebrity Hotline. He is working with the Big Ten Network.
Saw him on the desk today looking good with that
big ten acre guy with you know, the anchor in
the Big Ten Network that he's got the sloping nose,
like the real ski slope. That guy, he's really good.
He was with Don McClain today, the leading scorer in
the history of UCLA basketball. His statue stands in Lemon
(21:14):
Park in Beautiful Seam Valley and he joins us now
on the Petrosen Money Show. What's cracking, Don? How are
you out there? Yeah? How's going to Yeah? We had
a good day.
Speaker 5 (21:23):
I only had to do half the day to day,
so we had the first two games Oregon one and
Wisconsin one, setting up a really good morning tomorrow of
UCLA Wisconsin, Oregon Michigan State. So two really good games,
good energy in the building, which I knew it would be.
I'd heard that, and with Indiana playing the first game
of the day, he got things got things going early.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Don. I mean, like George and me, You're a West
Coast guy, a guy that came up and the old
Pac ten and then Pac twelve, and this is, I believe,
your very first Big ten tournament. What is your vibe?
And it feels like the West Coast teams in basketball
are holding their own pretty well.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
Out there they are, and you know it's it's you
know the Big Ten obviously with the PAC twelve going away.
And I sense this throughout the year, not the bad
way necessarily, but just that the Big ten was superior
to the PAC twelve. But I'll tell you being here
today now, it may change tomorrow and over the weekend,
but the energy in t Mobile Arena for the PAC
(22:25):
twelve tournament was every bit the same as it was
here today because and that's not to say the Big
Ten wasn't good, It's to say that the PAC twelve
energy was just as good. So not that much difference,
just in a different part of the country with different teams.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
Hey, don is George reister Man.
Speaker 4 (22:42):
So when you are looking in here in the national narrative,
everybody's SEC every time in the league should be in.
Just just put them in, crown them just the greatest
conference ever. What are you seeing between the Big ten teams?
How do they look and how should they compare as
a conference compaired to the SEC with the SEGN committee.
Speaker 5 (23:02):
Well, Indiana losing today didn't help the cause Georgia. Like
before this tournament started, Ohio State and Indiana, where the
two teams on the bubble. Ohio State losing yesterday basically
knocked them out. Indiana losing today, I don't think knocks
them out, but they're going to be real nervous on Sunday.
So if Indiana doesn't get in, it would still be
nine Big Ten teams, which is a lot. Look, the
(23:25):
SEC is just having one of those years, you know,
where everything came together. They you know, a lot of
senior players, a lot of veteran guys, and they just
they've had that year. And so I don't think that's
to take anything away from the Big Ten. If you
get nine teams in every year, I think everybody at
the conference level would take it in the Big Ten.
But there's there's, without question, as good as the Big
(23:46):
Ten is this year, the SEC just has more teams
that are going to get in the NCAA tournament.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
Well, USC have jelly legs tonight done. I mean they
went pretty late into the evening for old musclemen.
Speaker 5 (23:58):
But here's the thing, Pee and I was telling it
like it doesn't do. This is another thing that doesn't
dawn on people from the Big Ten. When you know
we're coming from the West coast. Everybody was saying this morning,
how day it was so late because it was double overtime.
I'm like, well, that was only nine o'clock for USC
on their time, so they weren't playing till midnight. Really,
(24:18):
they were playing till nine o'clock. And so anytime you
play a double overtime game, it's obviously going to take
more out of you. But the time change actually I
think works in their favor, especially because they're playing the
last game of the night. So it's supposed to tip
at nine o'clock tonight, Well that's really six o'clock in LA,
So we'll see how it plays out. Produce really good,
but maybe that win, you know, kind of galvanized USC
(24:39):
and they they'll continue the momentum here tonight.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
What about playing at nine am for Organ for the
West Coast guys that Pop Warner Football st start time.
Speaker 5 (24:48):
Yeah, we talked about that today on the show, about
how it was really nine am Tip or Organ. They
were able to handle it and win the game. Organ's
playing so good. I think they could play at any
time of the day right now. They probably went, but
it wasn't a factor for them.
Speaker 4 (25:03):
Yeah, when we look at teams that can actually win
a national championship, like not even just make the sweet
sixteen or Elite eight. How many teams and who are
they in the Big Ten that we should be looking
at and penciling in as literally a team that could
cut down the nets.
Speaker 5 (25:19):
Well, here's the thing, George, that's hard because the one
thing that's been great about the Big Ten this year
is there hasn't been a dominant team like Purdue with
Zach Eaty the last couple of years they won the
league going away and they got to the championship game
last year. The Big Ten is more like strengthen numbers.
And we were saying today how Oregon's the eighth seed
in this tournament and they could win this tournament. So
(25:40):
it's kind of hard to predict like who could make
a run and go all the way to the final
four and win a national championship just because no teams
are that highly rated. Michigan State won the regular season
and they're probably going to be a two seed. Now,
that doesn't mean they can't win a national championship. But
I guess what I'm saying is there's been so much
parody in this league and so many good teams it's
(26:02):
kind of hard to identify. Okay, that's the team that's
gonna make the run and win the whole thing.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Don McLain live on the Petresen Money Show. You see
him on FanDuel Sports. You also see him on the
Big Ten Network, especially this week for the Great Big
Ten Basketball Tournament. Don McClain's first. We remember the old
Pac ten Tournament in the vacuous Staples Center where Don
McClain would be out there on TV with Ernie Kent,
(26:31):
and Ernie Kent would be staring daggers into the camera
like he's gonna kill somebody on the other end.
Speaker 4 (26:35):
I remember Ernie boy, because I used to hoop with
them all the time when I was up there with
you know, Luke and Luke, Luke, Ridnaard, Luke Jackson, Freddy Jones,
realon Legends of Scales and Brian Bracy coming out of Yeah, man, do.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
You remember Ernie kentni p about that? Yeah.
Speaker 5 (26:55):
You know what's funny about that, you mentioning that, is
that the minute the Pac ten Tournament became the Pac
twelve Tournament and they went straight to Vegas, was the
minute it was full for every game. And so all
these Big ten people are telling me, I've heard it
since I got here, how great it is Indianapolis is
like the perfect spot to have the Big Dead tournament
and all this stuff. Well, and I keep saying, well, Okay,
(27:19):
in three years, they're the Big ten tournament's going to
be in Vegas. I'm like, wait till it gets to
Vegas and then you tell me that it's the best
place to have it is Indianapolis.
Speaker 2 (27:27):
Can you see LA make a real run here? Don
without like a bona fide star, like I remember that
last Final four run they made. You know, you gotta
himI Hokaz, you got Johnny Jusang. What can they do
this year? Do you? Mar Bailey? Do you think they
can pull somebody out?
Speaker 5 (27:44):
I think they can. I think things have to go right.
I think Mara is going to have to continue to
be a big factor for them because all these teams
in the Big ten are big. I think they can
for sure make a run in this tournament. And then
once you get to the NCAA tournament, it's hard to
say because it's all matchups. And I've said that for
years that if you if you have a good draw
and the matchups are correct, you can make a run.
And ucl he is certainly good enough to do that.
Speaker 4 (28:07):
Yeah, are we is there a possibility to see some
of that muscleman magic coming out of the Big Ten
Tournament and USC having one of those upset years and
finding a way to get to steal a bid from somebody.
Speaker 5 (28:22):
The problem, George is, and we've talked about that in
the Pac twelve for years, it's only been a couple
of times where a team has won four games in
four days and won the whole thing. Colorado did it
the first year, Oregon did it five or six years
ago with Peyton Pritchard. The problem for USC is they
got to win five because they only they didn't have
to buy, so they have to win five games in
(28:43):
a row in five days to actually steal the bid.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
Well, well, I guess there's gonna be no muscleman magic
in George. Don McClain in Indianapolis having the time of
his life, not quite like Vegas, but he's still having
a good time. Kids, don't worry about it. To the
NBA real quick, Don, Things have really changed for the
Lakers since the last time we talked. Lebron got hurt
(29:07):
and Luca looks a little slower as they're on the road,
a little bit tired. They lost to the nets when
they weren't supposed to. They got the Milwaukee box tonight. Overall,
do you think they'll be able to sustain and kind
of maintain through Lebron's injury and create some excitement again
like they did the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
Well, it's just hard t because you're you're trying to
incorporate Luke and then Lebron gets hurt, so now it's
a whole different game. It's a whole different thing you're
trying to incorporate Luca on. Does that mean they can't? Look,
they're in good position in the West, but it is
imperative if the Lakers are going to make a run
in the playoffs, for Lebron to get back, and I
preferably get back before the regular season ends so that
(29:48):
he and Luca can continue to evolve together on that
team before the playoffs start.
Speaker 4 (29:54):
Yeah, and how much can you say that that JJ
Reddick in his rookie coaching debut, really for his inaugural season,
how would you judge the job that he's done compared
to you know, what the roster looked like on paper.
Speaker 5 (30:10):
I think he's done an unbelievable job. I really do
with all the pressure and all the scrutiny that the
Lakers get having Lebron on your team. You know, it
didn't start out great, and it looked like it was
going to be the same old Lakers we've seen the
last four or five years. But he's gotten them to
buy in. And I've said this a million times on
this show. Head coach's job is to get guys to
(30:31):
play hard and play together, and he seemingly has done that.
But it doesn't work without Lebron. It just doesn't. And
you could say if Lebron was on any team in
the league, it wouldn't it'd be the same thing. And
so I think overall he's gotten that culture headed in
the right direction, playing the right way, playing hard, and
I think if they get Lebron back, I think you
(30:53):
know they are going to make a run in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
Clipper seemed to have kind of settled down and figured
some things out. Do you think they're kind of over
that lull that they had there?
Speaker 5 (31:03):
I hope. So you know, they're in the playing right
now and they're gonna you know, that's a hard road.
Anything can happen. You know, what if the wrong guy
gets hurt in that playing game and all of a sudden,
you don't win and your season's over. So I don't
know if they have enough and enough time to get
back into the top six. So they're not in the
play in but at least they're back to winning games now, the.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
Great Don McClaine. Ladies and gentlemen, you have something you
want to ask about the Clippers, George, you're a big
Clipper guy. I know that. Well.
Speaker 4 (31:31):
I was going to ask them both Lakers, but I
was definitely going to ask about Oklahoma City because there's
a lot of people that are saying that they aren't
afraid of Oklahoma City. Do you think that the Lakers
or the Clippers can beat Oklahoma City in a series?
Speaker 5 (31:46):
Well, I don't think. I think the reason people say
that is they're not that experienced and they don't have
a ton of playoff experience, and so yeah, the Lakers
and Clippers could beat them. You know, they've had a
terrific regular season, They've battled through some injuries, home grewers
out for a while. I think Oklahoma City is the
best team right now. But I don't think they're one
(32:09):
of those teams where you're you're saying, oh, there's no
way we could beat them in a seven game series.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
Don McClain back to work, Big ten Tournament, Big ten Network,
doing great work in his very first Big ten tournament.
Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks?
Wait till they get to wait till they get a
load of your pool party out in Vegas. Don They're
gonna blow their minds, blow their minds.
Speaker 5 (32:31):
I've already told them about it.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
Thank you. Don have fun out there and we will
talk to you soon. The petros and Money Show continues
right here on AM five seventy. You're Home of the
Dodgers with George Reister in for Matt Smith. Are we
gonna call Matt Smith? Is that what we're doing? Is
he really? Who's gonna Who's gonna punch him up? You know,
I don't know how those skills. It's cracking everybody. Welcome back.
(32:55):
It's the one and only Petrosen Money Show on this
Crunchy Groove. And Thursday tomorrow, oh we'll have a very
short sliver of a show. But today we're on for
all four hours going till seven. Fox Sports Radio we'll
be on at seven o'clock, meaning no Dodger Talk tonight.
Just David Massey from Japan on our show in the
(33:17):
very next hour, but joining us right now, George a
real trip live from the Big Ten Tournament, landlocked unable
to surf, which is his source like the Sun for Superman.
It is Matt Muddy Smith, the voice of the Bolts,
of course, the co host of the Petrosen Money Show
(33:37):
on your Southern California Toyota Dealer Celebrity Hotline, joining his
own show from the Big Ten Tournament. What's cracking, Matt?
How are you well?
Speaker 3 (33:47):
I've made my way outside of Harry and eas Ease,
where I am sitting at dinner with Don McClean.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
Another dinner with Don.
Speaker 3 (33:54):
Yeah, and I don't know if you can hear in
the background, but we either got the Purdue or the
USC band in the background doing their warm up in
the parking garage of the I would assume barely frequented
mall here in the center of Indianapolis, the Circle Center
Mall parking garage that you know, used to be packed
with cars and kids going to hang out in the mall,
(34:15):
and now it's just a giant ghost town. So it's
a perfect spot for them to warm up well, I.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
Don't know if you just handed the phone to Don McLain,
who joined us in the very last segment, Matt, but
I know he did. We asked him the very same question.
You know, you've been to many Big ten tournaments. This
is Don's first, but this is your first with the
West Coast teams. Oregon and USC. There they go, and
(34:39):
that's Purdue, I think, and UCLA of course. How different
is it with those different teams. What's the vibe in Indianapolis?
It's good.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
I mean, look, Oregon played Indiana, so that's going to
be tough to get your fans packed into that morning session.
It was probably a ninety ten split. But they're staying
in the same hotel where I'm staying.
Speaker 5 (35:00):
A lot of fans.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
They packed the lobby last night. The band was down
there this morning when they sent off because they were
the new tip nine ham Pacific time against I you
and and there's a pretty healthy contingency. I've seen a
lot of UCLA, I've seen a lot of a little
bit of USC kind of walking around the city. So
certainly in Indianapolis it's a Purdue and Indiana sort of friendly.
(35:22):
That's who they hope would make a run to the finals.
But I think the West Coast has certainly announced their presence,
and they did that yesterday with with USC knocking off Purdue,
and I think tomorrow UCLA probably be favored to favor
against Wisconsin, a very tough team they're going to take on.
But yeah, it's I don't know. I just to answer
your question, it's kind of weird. You know, I'm gonna
(35:43):
I'm gonna hop inside because I don't know this Pa
gut barking my ear off. The band was cool, but
that was it DJ Moski. It's the Midwest equivalent of
DJ Molski. So yeah, it's just kind of weird. But
I think I think it's been good. Like I'm looking
at a guy right now with an Oregon stetchered on
walking in here to Harry and Izzy. So yeah, that
the teams have traveled, and I think specifically of all
(36:04):
of them, I've seen the most Ducks fans, Like there's
quite a few organ fans here, which is kind of cool.
Speaker 4 (36:09):
Good see see Ducks fans travel very well. All right, George,
are are we getting grumpy Mick Cronin right now? Or
are we getting Mick cronan with a smile.
Speaker 2 (36:22):
On his face.
Speaker 3 (36:24):
Well, I think right now you're getting mad with a
smile on his face. But I think, come tomorrow, man,
that that team's a load. You know that that is
that's you're talking about two seven footers that can shoot
the three that moved the ball. Well today, I think
you saw what Greg Guard did with with crowded Winter,
and I think it's a lot for any team to
(36:44):
deal with. I mean, these guys are legitimately seven feet,
they're athletes. They can stretch the floor, they they ran
the boards and and they can distribute. So I guess
that's in a diamon Ar game right that he's going
to have to probably play bit and you know, and
I think Wisconsin also kind of has it's kind of
that chip on the shoulder George, you know where they're
(37:06):
pretty pissed if they didn't get that double by that
slipped away from them at the back end of the
season and they ended up having to play that game
today against Northwestern. He was able to do a pretty
good job at just budgeting minutes. Nobody really got you know,
sort of you know, didn't get worked too hard. I
don't think anyone was really over thirty thirty one minutes
who was able to sort of work it out that way,
But by no means so, I think it's going to
(37:27):
be anything but a hell of a fight for UCLA
to get that win, just because of the uniqueness of
what Wisconsin presents.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
That's the voice of Matt Buddy Smith on his own
radio show from the Big Ten Tournament. Matt, is there
anything else before we move on to the big NFL
moves that I know you want to get into about
the Chargers today? Is there anything else that really jumps
out to you about the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis
this year? Anybody particularly super fat or driving a big
(37:56):
Chrysler or anything like that.
Speaker 3 (37:58):
Well, I'll say you, Minnesota had one of the the
fatter centers we've seen in a while and Kevin Mitchell,
and that was fun to watch. It was a darn
shame that they didn't get the win over Northwestern, now,
didn't they?
Speaker 2 (38:07):
They ruthlessly fired that coach overnight.
Speaker 3 (38:10):
I know, two am, poor Ben Johnson and his staff
dismissed after a disappointing showing in a bit of an
apathetic performance. I will say though, the Martin Nick Martinelli,
his family Uh, you know he is the heir to
the Martinelli Sweet Apple Cider fortune. Uh really had a
fun player to watch. I don't think he is now.
(38:30):
I think it's just a common.
Speaker 2 (38:31):
Less what you get it when you get your braces off,
they give you that Martin Ellie.
Speaker 3 (38:36):
Exactly. But that's a fun dude to watch. It's too
bad that his college career has come to an end.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
So didn't you have a guy jump jumping when he
was shooting free throws? Today?
Speaker 3 (38:44):
Matt, that's him, that's our guy. And I made the
teen Wolf, I made the Team Wolf comparison that we
have not seen someone jump shoot their free throw since
Michael J. Fox was not the wolf in Teen Wolf.
And yet the Big Ten's leading scorer, in fact, is
a jump shooter. From the Breethrow Live, you'd.
Speaker 2 (38:59):
Think he'd have the strength in his body to get
it there without the legs. Did you think at Matt
Muddy Smith on Twitter where you can follow him during
the Big Ten tournament and when he's on the plane
sometimes he really chops it up with all those Charger fans.
You know about free agency, George, I know you love
the free agency talk. Did Mike Williams come back today.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
He did, Yeah, he did, and that I guess kind
of always made sense once the DeVante Adams and the
DK Metcalf thing just kind of didn't work out for him.
I think of all the receivers that were left out there,
just because you know, I mean, you kind of saw
what Mike and Justin do Justin Herbert do when Mike's healthy,
and he was off to a heck of a start
(39:43):
before he got hurt. He's one of the best fifty
to fifty ball catchers in the league, and there's that chemistry.
So we'll see whether or not Greg Roman uses him
the same way that Kellen Moore and Joe Lombardi and
you know, obviously when she Steichen was there, man, that
was a heck of a season and her it's rookie year.
But I know, you know, Justin Herbert loves the guy,
and he's a great locker room guy. He's one of
(40:04):
the nicest guys beloved by the team, and so it
just made sense, you know, for them and what they're
trying to do. So I think it fits. Yeah, Yeah, George.
Speaker 4 (40:14):
Mad Am, I bugging or isn't Matt Williams the one?
I'm sorry Mike Williams, the one who was like made
a comment about Justin Herbert that like he was finally
going to get a chance to play with a good
quarterback or something like that, when.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
He'd really, no, no, absolutely.
Speaker 2 (40:30):
Not that that did that on the on the way
out of the Chargers.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
The only guy I could think of was maybe Austin Eckler,
just because I know he was not happy that his
time came to an end in LA. But outside of that,
I mean, Jed. The receivers love Justin. I mean it's
you know, he's such a mellow, nice guy. I think
it's hard not to to kind of just be complimentary
of him. But yeah, I mean Mike, I can't see
(40:56):
Mike doing that. Mike is the one that got attacked
by Aaron Rodgers for not running the red line, remember,
because Aaron Rodgers is a complete a hole. That was
kind of the big mic story. And then of course
he got released and you know, caught a touchdown the
very next week in Pittsburgh. So I can't imagine that
would be Mike that would say that, because the guy
had a thousand yard ten touchdown season with Justin, and
I mean those two are just you know they're perfect
(41:18):
for each other. He's a fifty to fifty ball guy.
Justin's got the arm. He always put it up there
for Mike to go get, and Mike would always go
up and get it.
Speaker 2 (41:25):
Well, Matt's got what two early games tomorrow and then you're.
Speaker 3 (41:28):
Done two early games? And then you know this, pee,
what's the worst thing you could possibly have when you're
calling a game and that's a tight flight. Oh I've
got yeah, I got a six seventeen out of Indianapolis,
and I'll probably be wrapping up the game about four
point thirty four forty. So let's hope you Cela in
(41:49):
Wisconsin don't get into a foulfest and that thing turns
into a three hour game.
Speaker 5 (41:53):
Come very well, maybe staying here another night.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
Frustration wise evident in the call from Matt Smith upun
compass Maria. They think you have money on the game.
Oh yeah, thank you, Stop extending it. It's over. Stop.
I've fallen victim to this. But we're taking another turn on.
Speaker 3 (42:18):
Exactly so I got that ahead of me tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (42:20):
Well, thank don for letting us take you for a moment,
and thank you for letting us take down for a
moment earlier, Matt, and enjoy your night and uh Frank
and izz he's there, and have one of those almost
colas for us.
Speaker 5 (42:33):
That's the plan.
Speaker 3 (42:34):
Why not finish it off with one of those? Because
that's a good idea. But this is a drunk show,
so that's what I do.
Speaker 2 (42:39):
You got to get the Elmos cock cocktail.
Speaker 3 (42:43):
Now we already did, already blew that, blew that straight
through my nose. It's why sound so good.
Speaker 2 (42:47):
George, So like you took a bunch of hals. All right, right,
Matt Smith, everybody, thank you Matt for joining the show,
your show. How could you ever say that Mike Williams
say something bad about Herbert? No, no, never ever ever
said anything bad about Herbert ever, George, Listen, I defend
(43:11):
Justin Herbert a lot and people. Why are people after
Justin Herbert? People don't like Herbert?
Speaker 4 (43:17):
No, it's it's been because I think Emmanuel Acho, who
took the Liberty social media quarterback.
Speaker 2 (43:22):
Oh yeah, he worked from time to time, so he
was trying.
Speaker 4 (43:26):
I believe that he was trying to make Justin because
he sees Justin Herbert as a potential star in the NFL.
I think he was trying to make him what Skip
did with Lebron and other guys have done with with guys,
that it was going to be like a low hanging,
you know, punching at him, easy type of deal. You
think was trying to be a hot take type of guy. No, no,
(43:51):
not a jo no way, not no chance, not the och.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
Yeah yeah, not the joy. Taylor's back off suspension this
week or whatever. So what she get suspended for?
Speaker 5 (44:00):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (44:00):
I mean sa sideliner legend, who knows. I have no
idea what I've been heard. All right, we'll be back
with your dad. No, no, no, that's later. Word number
Song of the Day. Word number Song of the Day
coming up. Thank you to Matt Smith and Don McLean
for joining us from the Big Ten Tournament. The feature
next hour David Vassey live from Japan and the Land
(44:23):
of the Rising Sun, where the sun is in fact rising.
Stay with us
