It is we just won't be defeated Wednesday. And let
me tell you something, people, there's a man sitting across
from me in this studio that will not be defeated.
You may have knocked him down ten times, but he'll
get up eleven. And as we were just discussing before
(01:24):
he hit the air today, it has been nearly thirteen years,
thirteen years since you sat in a chair with a
microphone in front of you on the fourth floor of
a building on Olive Avenue and Burbank, adjacent to the
one thirty four. Everybody, we could not be more excited
(01:47):
for the next two hours to have in studio with us.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Steve Hartman, money mon, It is great to be here, Ronnie,
the young Colin here, Colin.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
He got a little shaky when he met me. It's
like he's heard about me, you know.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
He was like a little bit he was I think
your reputation, your your reputation precedes you, Steve, just a
little bit just wasn't sure. But I think it was
more not necessarily trepidation, but curiosity. What is this Steve
Hartman that everybody's been talking about?
Speaker 4 (02:24):
Like the link it's like Bigfoot, a little bit luckness
monster type of you know, like does he really exist?
Like is this guy actually out there? Is it not
a AI? Is it ai? Ste Why does he always
look the same, does it everything change. I mean, it's like,
why is that you haven't aged it? You have not
(02:45):
aged a day.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Unbelievable. Now we've seen you. I feel like we've seen
you out at a torch stop. We had like last
year maybe then I think it was two years ago
a torch stop. So seen you recently it feels, I mean,
it sounds ridiculous to say I saw you two years
ago recent, but to be back in the room, this
is something else.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Look money, we moved into these new studios many years ago.
We're trying to figure out the probably four because obviously
I was here for your very first day at the
station and uh it was night two thousand and four
and we had left Korea Town, the old studios, and
obviously we're extremely excited the the repertoire, the scenery inside
the studio was a little bit different.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
As you may remember, way back in the day, we
became the Dodger State, we were the Lakers station. We
became the Dodger sto exactly, Dodger exactly.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
And big part of why you came because you've always
been a die hard Laker fan all this many many years,
and so you know, to be hearing these brand New
Studios was mind blowing.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
At that time.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
Jay Leno was still taping the Tonight Show across the street.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
And made friends with.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
Marvin SMI Smith, who was you know, Kevin you Banks
had the band and he was the drummer for the band.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Still still talk to him.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
He's one of the best people on the planet.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
For a second, because I just want to kind of
set the scene for the folks back in the day.
I come over from k Rock FM radio, you know
music obviously heritage station in the market, and just in
a machine, a freaking money making machine that just churns
out alt rock hits and and bands are coming through
(04:22):
and it's a big operation, and head honchos from New
Yorker in town all the time, and they're crunching numbers
and they're squeezing pennies and they're trying to figure out
how to make that next ten million dollars this year.
I come in here and I've got Vic the brick.
Imagine Vic is in standard Vic garb right, He's he's
got a whatever, a giant fur Baboushkhan and some sort
(04:47):
of necklace, and he's got a staff and he's wearing
a robe some sort of African robe. Yes, exactly. But
I've got Michael Thompson who's just like the mic isn't
even in front of him. The guys are on the air.
By the way, I come to meet with Don for
lunch and the guys are on the air doing a show.
Michael Thompson's microphone is off. He's leaning back in his
(05:08):
chair and he's eating and he's from the Bahamas and
laid back. Yet Steve's in the middle of driving the
segment man, and he's just freaking. He's a jockey and
he's whipping the horse and whipping the horse and riding
this segment. And Don opens the door and he's like, hey,
you won't see the way the sausage is might here
you go, Let's see, I'll see a little radio magic.
Here we go, take a look at this. He pushes
(05:29):
the door open, and as Steve is doing the segment,
Michael looks at me, who's this? And I look around him, like,
in the middle of a segment, run what's your name?
I'm mad? Where are you're from? I work over at Cara,
Don trying to give you a job. Full conversation in
(05:49):
the middle of the segment, VI's dancing around doing some
sort of rain dance. Steve is driving a segment about
how Kobe drove off shade.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
Look like the thing about it was I was doing
a show. It was always insane with Michael and Vick. Look,
the bosses here were constantly harping on the fact, you
guys are constantly talking over each other, right, And actually
what it was is I would get to break time.
Ronnie remembers this, So we would get to where I'm
like wrapping up a segment. That's when they would start
(06:19):
talking over each other. So as I'm trying to close
a segment, now you got three voice like three separate
shows going on simultaneously, which was for someone that you know,
I like things sort of in place.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Certainly, you know my hair is always in place.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Everything's in place, right, and so that's what you want
to call it sort of so you want to hair, well,
you know, I shouldn't do it.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
To it, Ai asked the man the master. I mean,
we all, we all learned at the feet of Steve
Hartman when it came to figureing out how to make
our partners happy.
Speaker 4 (06:56):
Well, that's the thing. I had to figure this out.
How do I work with these two guys make it work.
But he made it work. And then obviously and then
you and then finally with Petro shows up first day PMS.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Obviously, I remember like it was yesterday. I led Petros
on you said he was in the lead when you
were looking for all.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
The lead.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
I'm just calling you tonight. I hope you had a
good night. We enjoyed amity and you're in the light.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Okay, Well, here's here's the fact. Tom Hofarth of the
Daily News USC guy to a core, was a huge
Petros guy.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
And really really really really wanted Petros to get the job.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Petros was Petro's I mean, it was phenomenal day one,
and so I did call Petros and you know, I
just said, you know, well you heard that one lock
with Tea is repeated to me five thousand times over
the years, along with the F bomb I dropped on
him on radio. Remember you blamed it on the Royds,
which is my favorite. Well, we'd just gotten back from Arizona.
(07:53):
Was that that super was the weekend that pal Gasol
got signed by the Lakers. Everybody got sick on that trip.
I mean, the the national something was spreading around Phoenix,
so I had to take a day off, and you know,
the doctor doesn't want me off the are He goes,
we're gonna give you a steroid shot.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Remember we had the push up thing that was I remember?
How can I possibly forget it? Why are these people
so serious about a push up? Got this radio?
Speaker 4 (08:19):
Peoples comes in, He's giving me all kinds of crap
and I just I just lost it was so good.
And Ronnie diving for the dump button, like, holy crap,
did you just drop an F bomb?
Speaker 2 (08:29):
That might be the reason why we have dump buttons
in here? Was that I never I've never pressed on
buttons in here.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
You know, Steve, our dump button, if you remember back
in the day, used to be eight seconds.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Now it's like thirty, Is it really now? Yeah? And
I think I think it stems from that particular incident.
We do have a couple. I'm sure you've heard it
over the course of I don't know how dedicated of
a Petros and Money Show listener you are, Steve, but
you know, I'm sure you've heard the couple sound bites
of yours we have in part of your conversations. One
of our favorites, Sambteash and Sean Farnham. Yes, we're talking
(09:00):
out the Eagles, and you were like, what is what's
going on? This is my show. I got in trouble,
by the way. I don't know if you remember. I
got in trouble for that argument. That's another good one.
We're to get to that one. But enough by this
because I took up for you by saying, hey, Man,
don't be going after Hartman like that when you're just
a weekend guy. And Don got really upset, like he
(09:23):
came storming and he's like a weekend guy. We're all
on the same team. You idiot calling him a weekend
guy aired me out of everybody because I was taken
up for you Hartman. I was tired of their conversation too.
I was like, that's Hartman's show. They have a potession
far to take the car?
Speaker 4 (09:39):
What am I I mean we could, Sally, I mean,
we could obviously sit here and share twenty four hours straight.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
I just want to set the tone. You're back. It
is great.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Yeah, you know, there's no no discomfort. But like I said,
it's it's interesting actually being here with you on the air.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Now. We we did the Fusion for many many.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
Years, which really came down to that would deliver well
you well, I had Petros and I had Vic. Yes,
so you and Michael would just sort of check out
man a little bit.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
You's gonna hang out. Then I had to tackle those two.
Oh yeah, thanks. I enjoyed the future for that hour exactly.
I'd kick back.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
Do you remember the fremous fusion though, when Myers came aboard?
Do you remember that first week when I was with
Myers in Tampa.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
I believe they were. I believe. I don't know because
Charlie called us clowns as well. He didn't want to
do any Charlie did not want to do anything with us,
But I do believe Chris Myers also called us clowns.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
Well, what happened was like, I can't do this for
an hour with these week story. I know we got
limited time today, quick story. We're in Tampa the second week,
the first full week that I'm on with Myyers doing
this national show, and you guys are doing the national
show right after ours.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
We are on radio road. The first two days were
like a.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
Hooters and you know that this is the super Bowl.
Super Bowl was Miami, nota no, this was Tampa. This
is two thousand and nine. Two thousand and nine is
the Yeah, it's Tampa.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
I am no.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
That was the following day. It was okay filowing year
here for over a year.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
Oh yes, because we we we started the day that
we get our first day on the air was the
last day with Michael Vick. Was inauguration day of a
President Obama January twenty, two thousand and nine. So the
next day I'm on with Myers. Next week we're in
Tampa the whole week. So Wednesday we moved a radio row.
So we're getting ready for the fusion, and you guys
(11:28):
are in La and I'm with Myers in Tampa.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Let's go. And as I'm saying time now for the
few and everybody will say it.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
As I'm doing this, Myers, standing next to me, takes
off his head set, place it down, and literally walks
out of the Bedee.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
You guys are, what's happening in Tampa? Blah blah blah. Myers,
what's up? I said, Chris, He's just gone. He's gone.
He's gone.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
I go.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
I don't think he's a big fan of No. I
feel like clown. I want to say, clown. What's the
word that was you no, this is this is I
believe this to be true. And because God bless him,
our our dear friend and former boss Don Martin. Yes,
you know, hey, I can't say anything on the air,
but uh, I'm gonna try to get it fixed. I'm
(12:15):
gonna try to get it corrected. But Chris said that
it's it's gonna and again I'm gonna say allegedly, so
I'm not. I don't put myself in legal peril. Chris
said he believes that doing the segment will put his
professional career in peril and that you two are a
couple of clocks.
Speaker 4 (12:36):
I tried to convince him he wasn't gonna have any
all and I think we're probably done with the fusion.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
When I was in that was that was. That was
the end of it. Chris Myer's Enemy of Fun killed.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
I still have Chris Hall once in a while on
the weekends doing preview of the game. I'm you know,
Chris and I never had a problem. I had known
Chris for twenty years before that.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
He's a very kind man, very I see him calls
games for Fox, I see him on the road when
he's well. He's the voice of NASCAR professional guy. Hell
of a play by play man I've gotten. I just don't.
I try to explain PMS to him. He just didn't.
Not for everybody. It's actually not for a lot of people,
to be honest with you, it's but hey, it's it's
(13:16):
for a select few, and for those select few, we
try to deliver great, great sports song in day out.
And when this opportunity came up, I just kind of
I looked at the way the planets aligned, and I'm like, well,
it's a super flex, right, it's not even a fu
super flex means we're off the air before we're even
(13:38):
supposed to start, right, you know, Petro Some Money is
a three to seven show. Yeah, they move us around.
That's we're gonna call it a flex. We're go'll move
you around, make sure we get the Petro some Money
in there. Right. So the super flex is when, yeah,
where I really should just have a day off. It's
technically no, we're doing two hours of radio. So I
was like, super flex one to three long, awesome boss.
(14:02):
I'm like, hey, man, mm hm, you feel about a
little Heartman action, You feel about a little little Hartman
little hearkening back, you know, nostalgia place. Absolutely, look at
the you look at the movies, and what do we
see a lot of remakes? You look at the music,
and what do you see a lot of covers? Everything
comes around man, up, down and around. And I was like,
(14:23):
let's get Hartman in, man, Let's freaking get Hartman in
from one to three pm, his old stopping grounds, his
old time stamp, mid Days, Loose Cannons, Steve Hartman in
place for pH.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
I'm honored. I honestly, I'm honored. I'm humbled to be
here today. Uh congratulations you and p You know, you
guys have become superstars in this industry.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
I'm so proud of you guys and all the work
you've done.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
But to see Ronnio for Timmy Kags, my original producer
when I moved.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Up Donald Hier, Steve, was he given to you? Did?
Did donn handed to me? Obviously? It was right out
of UCLA?
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Right?
Speaker 4 (14:57):
I do remember when Don called me and said, what
do you think about Uh Tim on the air, I
go doing what he goes. I think I could do
him on the U c l A pre show. I said,
I'm sure he could handle it. He's the UCLA guy. Yeah,
so that was how that. Now look at him, you know,
I look at him.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
Huh.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
He every sale of the Dodgers and u c L
as media network for college basketball, college and NFL football Raiders.
I mean, my god, man is a US. He's He's
omnipresent in the world of a lot. There's no question
about that.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
But no, I couldn't be more proud of all these
people that obviously we're here at the game.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
Well you know, I mean you know I was told
I remember helped these guys out. Yeah, I mean that
was that was. Don's just watch what Steve does, all right.
Steve's in the chair of power Man. That's where you're
gonna sit, all right. I want you to watch. He's
like a point guard, all right? Is he does he
have to shoop? Steve shoots a little bit. He shoots
a little bit too much for a point guard. You know,
(16:00):
the job is to be a point guard in your movie, like, hey,
hey Michael, here's a pass, right, Hey, hey Vic, here's
an alley you all right, I want you to watch it.
And that's what I'm talking about. Okay, So yeah, I
got that talk. So I did, Yeah, I did watch you.
I shadowed you Hartman. Well, and look at what you've
done with p all these years. It's it's been twenty
years of sheer. That is last year, was it twenty years?
Speaker 4 (16:22):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (16:22):
This is our night. So if we complete this year,
it will be nineteen full years and it will start
year twelve. That is absolutely amazing. Well, yeah, thank you,
from Bud to Philly, Billy to Michael. Yes, and now
sitting here with me, this idiot. Well, what a way
to set the scene, to set the tone. It's two
hours of just us, no guests. David Vass doing Dodgers
(16:46):
on deck at three, first pitch at four from the
Galpin Motors broadcast booth. Got a lot of heavy lifting,
so he's taping or he's actually corralling a bunch of
interviews for the pregames, So we're gonna let him do
his thing. Would have been fun to have Dave and
Steven at the same time. I know you both have
very strong hardball opinions, and I was looking forward to
that clash of the of the Baseball Titans. But alas
(17:08):
you will have to wait until I may d be
the most hated guy in San Diego when I was
down there. Yeah, I promote Bessa and literally like, don't
put this idiot on the air. And then you put
him on the air and put him on the air
and he's good at it. Oh, he would just sooak
the fire.
Speaker 4 (17:23):
He would stoke the fire, lay out the pod, raises
losers and oh.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
Yes, fantastic. Yeah, that'll be from the Galpin Motors Badcast
Booth At four pm, I Heearts Wango Tango presented by
Fiji Aias. I just had the conversation with my youngest
daughter last night. She's like, so, Dad, Lango Tango right.
I was like, yeah, let's go. How old is she now?
Seventeen at almost eighteen. So it's right up the street
from where we lived. Excited about Huntington City Beach, I've
(17:49):
seen it's basically kind of where they set up the
US Open a surf down there, just south of the pier.
Dojha Cat, Gwen Stefani, Meghan Trainer, a whole bunch more.
Get your tickets now at AXS dot Com. Prices will
go up May second. But hey, little live music on
the beach. Grab the kids, grab the loved ones, grab
the lady, grab the man. Whatever you're into, we don't care.
Just get your tickets at AXS dot com. But we'll
(18:10):
get into the top story today. Steve works over at KTLA,
so you certainly no stranger to what the Clippers are doing.
Do you want to dig into what we believe could
be a historic run, So get into that with the
top story of the day. Lakers big victory last night,
so a lot of NBA to talk with Steve, just
like old times, dur money Month during the money Month,
(18:33):
that's what we'll do next. So tonight we got Dodgers
Cubs tomorrow, Game three, first one at Intuit Dome. Clippers
Nuggets tip off at seven. You'll hear it right here
because the Dodgers will be off tonight. They'll fly home
after that short two game series against the Cubs. We'll
start a series on Friday with the Pirates in town.
(18:54):
So we'll have that Clipper Game three tip off at
seven am, five seventy not on a eleven fifty Last night,
Lakers bounce back, get a victory, hard fought, physical, ugly
fourth quarter, build a big lead, hang on to win.
Reminiscent of the twenty ten NBA title Final series against
the Celtics. Turn on that Mic, I know Steve. It's
(19:16):
been a while, but there you go. But I'm sorry
about that. Pushed the button. I mean, I get it,
You're it was on already. I can't really see Ronnie well,
you know, Colin gets excited. Colin fills up the window.
The best part of the program Colin. Colin kind of
puts his face in there. You feel like he's on
the program, money money.
Speaker 4 (19:34):
You remember, obviously, as we all do, Game seven of
the twenty Tensuba Finals. What was that? Literally the ugliest
basketball game ever played?
Speaker 2 (19:43):
It was?
Speaker 4 (19:44):
It was It was what like for the end, it
was like sixty to fifty four with like a minute
to go on the third quarter.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
I mean it was what was Cobe five six or
twenty three? It was really crazy. The VP the finals.
You know I would have leaned.
Speaker 4 (19:59):
I mean, yeah, it was. It was, and he had
a lot of rebounds. But then ron Ard tests before
he changed his stay in a better world peace. He
was screaming after the game.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Kobe, let me shoot the ball. He let me shoot
the ball. It was the ultimate oh no oh no, oh, yes,
oh yes, But you have a good feeling about this,
Like years here's kind of where I was going to
go with this top start, you know, let's knock it.
So when I watched, I'm watching the game last night
with the with the wife, and as you know, things
(20:30):
run full, and I'm flipping back and forth, of course,
because the Dodgers can't give me any peace. You know,
they're down by then they're up by one, and then
they're down, then they're up, and then Tanner Scott blows
the save, and in extra innings they just completely collapse.
And I don't know what's going on with this bullpen,
the fact that Tanner Scot's supposed to be the best
reliever on the market and he gets paid like it,
and he's I.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
Think they're a little overtaxed right now. You always got
to worry about the innings for your bullpen. Early in April.
You got to get more innings out of your starting pitching.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
Kirby Yates blew it Versusaki. But you know what, May
pitch his five innings last night. I know last Now
screwed him with the whole cramps thing. But you know,
Kirby Yates blew it on sasake in Texas. Now Tanner
Scott blows it in Chicago, and I get it. It's
Win's blowing out, Win's blowing in, Win's blowing out. It
gets a little weird out there, But dude, he gave up.
He served up two freaking tatters, one that should have
(21:18):
been gone already.
Speaker 4 (21:18):
Again, Look, I'm not going to question a future Hall
of Famer, which Dave Roberts is, But Bob Melbourne went
to San Francisco when he came to San Diego, and
he took over a team that just had the worst
post All Star Game collapse maybe in Major League history
in twenty twenty one, and those first couple of months,
he told his starting pitchers because it was essentially the
same staff, I don't care if you've given up eight runs,
(21:41):
you're pitching five. You're you're giving me five to six innings. Yeah,
And as we remember in the playoffs that year, that
pod Rey bullpen was fresh and they did a number
on the Dodgers in the playoffs. So I don't have
to tell Dave Roberts how to manage Obviously he knows more,
way more than I do about it. But yeah, that
would be my concern about just not getting enough innings
out of starting pitch.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
Yeah, and I don't think it's I don't think it's
by design, No, not yanking him early. It's just you've
got freaking Tyler glassanow who can't get over the fact
that he's got dirt in his cleats in Philadelphia, I
have got a really bad cramp and has cramps in Texas.
Not ideal. After four scoreless, after four scoreless, not ideal.
(22:24):
So that's not where I was going at point. Being
ended up having to flip back and forth last night
instead of just fully concentrating on the Laker game. But
you know, pretty much majority seven it was at eighty
twenty split Lakers. Look, I appreciate what they put together
last night. It's the way they had to play. It
was gritty, it was ugly. Defense was vastly. It was
(22:45):
Lebron played great defense. They's nas scored yet right after
going what eleven or thirteen in the first game, So
they did everything they had to do and and got
the win and came up with some big plays down
the stretchs with that huge layup. Obviously, Luca was sensational offensively.
You can get frustrated by the ball domination, but that's
(23:08):
what Luca does. Like that's that's just and he's really
good at it. He's gonna hunt the matchup he wants,
which last night was Rudy Gobert, and as soon as
he gets it, he's gonna shoot and probably make it.
And that's fine. But my big takeaway was, you could
not have a more drastic disc difference, a wider gap
(23:29):
between impressive looking basketball, and we're just holding on by
our fingernails trying to get this thing right between the
Clippers and Lakers. You know, like the Clippers like a
freaking buzz song the Clippers. Well, I'm sure you're going
to get in the Clippers. But just a quick note
on the on the Lakers, and I've been saying this
on the National Show for the weekends. My feeling is
(23:50):
this is Lebron's last year in a Laker uniform because
and I say that because you now have this. This
team is firmly Luka Doncic's team. This is his team.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
His jersey now is the number one selling jersey in
the NBA, number seventy seven jersey. If you go to
the games, it's all about Luka Doncic. And then Lebron's
ever played a support ever in his entire career, standing
in the corner for a bunch of times exactly so.
And really, you've got to build this team around this
twenty six year old superstar, and you're not going to
do that with a forty one year old Lebron James.
(24:21):
I don't know what Lebron has in mind for his future,
but they need other pieces. I mean, are they an
e leite team. Well, at times they look elite, but
there are other times when defensively they are deficiencies. They
need some bigs inside the they have needs. I mean,
you've been following Laker basketball a long time. You know
what it takes to have the right mix to have
a championship caliber team or right now, I just don't
(24:41):
think they've got that. But I would not be surprised
if this is Lebron's last year with the Lakers.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
I love that.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
I don't. I think anybody that listens to the show knows,
like I don't like Lebron. I'm not a fan, I
get it. I just don't think he's gonna leave. Bronny's
on the team. He's got another year at fifty million bucks,
that's got another game played already. We got that.
Speaker 4 (25:01):
Yeah, they gave him that. I mean they drafted him
to give him the opportunity to make history. Trade that's
water under the bridge, trade them both. It's a package deal. Okay,
that's fine, that's what I'm saying. But I'm just saying,
if Lebron does want to continue his NBA career, the
our teams he might play for and they could get
something in return for him. Still, but that's just my
(25:21):
Unless they have a deep run this year in the playoffs,
I don't think they get past the second round.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
So yeah, I'm a little more focused on just just
kind of the now, right. And when you look at
last night and it's the second second game in a
row that Jackson Hayes has gotten a quick hook, Yeah,
it's like, can we make this work?
Speaker 1 (25:39):
No?
Speaker 2 (25:40):
And then you realize, Okay, so if he's getting the
hook and you're looking at the bench, Vanderbilt's barely playing.
It's basically Finny Smith and Gabe Vincent. You've got six guys.
I'd say you can maybe argue six and a half
if you want to talk about the nine minutes from Vanderbilt,
like that's it. This team is six and a third,
(26:05):
six and a half players deep. That it's a forty
one year old Lebron. It's obviously a Luca who's conditioning
has been questioned. Look, I give them all the credit
in the world. Lebron played forty minutes last night. Luca
played forty minutes last night, and Lebron's still busting his
ass on defense in the final three minutes. So tip
of the cap to them. But you said it, this
(26:27):
is four rounds of basketball to win a championship. I
don't know how you can possibly do it for four rounds. Well,
they can't by having six guys. They can't.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
I mean, imagine that this Minnesota team still had Karl
Anthony Towns. I mean, come on, I mean, they would
destroy the Slaker team Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
Funny man, They're just like that's the thing about Minnesota
right when you look at what the Clippers are doing.
To contrast it, I still think it's a maturity thing.
Speaker 4 (26:53):
With Anthony Edwards as oh, yes, talented, two years will
be the best player, He's still four seeing things when
he really shouldn't be foreseeing things go beart.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
Can't really do anything offense. Guy, know, it's just last night.
He had nine in the first game and Anthony Edwards
has zero assists last night, and he didn't really shoot it.
Speaker 4 (27:09):
On mind me again, who they got in that trade,
Julius Randel, Yeah, and Dante Divicenzo and Dante. I think
he missed all of his shots if I remember. Yeah,
But you know, I mean, that's That's sort of the
interesting thing, right is, like you forget that there is
a chemistry element to this A big time Everybody had
always talked about that. Karl Anthony Town's kind of an
odd dude. Well, and it's a different beast in the
(27:31):
postseason when you're playing the same team night after night,
you know, and they're making adjustments, you're making adjustments. Obviously
the Lakers made a lot of defensive adjustments between Game
one and Game two.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
But it's just it's.
Speaker 4 (27:42):
Completely different than the regular season. So I look, I
I have faith in Luka Doncic in the future for
the Lakers. I don't think there's any question about that.
But they're gonna have to tinker.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
With his support. Like watching the game, because I love
watching Luca. I can watch Luky. He's one of the
most you know what I love about him. He seems
to be moving in slow motion a lot, but it's
so calculated.
Speaker 4 (28:04):
Well, Honestly, when you look at Jokic, he's very similar,
but he's a big guy doing the same thing where
everything is very deliberate, but he always knows where he
is on the court and where everyone else is on
the court. And so it's like it's like a chess match,
and these guys are geniuses off the charts.
Speaker 2 (28:19):
You know, as I kind of the sort of my epiphand,
I don't know if you want to call it an
epiphany your realization, but like as I was watching that
game last night, I'm like, God, this is it's it's painful,
Like it is painful, and you score thirteen points in
the fourth quarter, and yeah, you can get a takeaway
of yeah, this is painful. You've got stretches of five
minutes where neither team is making a field goal. But
(28:40):
I can trast that with how I felt on Monday night,
And like every time I had to hit the previous
button to go to the King's game or I had
to leave the King's game to go to the Clippers game,
I was like, I don't want to do this, man,
it's too good. I don't want to leave it. Like
it's it's it's must watch basketball again.
Speaker 4 (28:57):
When you watch, I mean we he just got reminded
again if you had forgotten the Kawhi Leonards one of
the top five players in this league. And it's not close,
and it's not close because he can do it on
the defensive end. Obviously, maybe not to the degree he
did back in his heyday. He get but nineteen shots
for thirty nine points. His efficiency was literally off the charts.
(29:18):
But just watching certain players in this league that are
in control, in control, and he was coming off that
seven turnover game where maybe he was forcing things a
little bit too much in Game one, but to go
from that to what we saw in game two just
a reminder. Look, I was out of it into a
dome first time I've been out there. Phenomenal facility, by
(29:40):
the way, and you know I'm standing there and there's
you know, Vitza Zubots, who obviously should win Most Improved
Player in this league. You got a healthy James Harden
who's had a big effect on you know, it's a
Zoobots who really has helped him become a better player,
and a healthy Kawhi and Norman pal I mean, how
many teams have four players that can actually take over
(30:03):
a game. That's what the Clippers have right now. You
just keep their fingers crossed. These stay healthful.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
They just think you look at the bench, like when
you look at the Lakers bench versus yeah, the Clipper
And look, you're going to shorten your rotations in the
playoffs anyway. But like when you're talking about Jackson Hayes,
basically for all intents and purposes, no longer being in
the rotation. Right, he's out.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
So what do you have.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
You've got Finny Smith and Gabe Vincent that's their bench. Yeah,
Vanderbilt played eight minutes, Goodwin played. Where's Vanderbilt? Vanderbilt was
supposed to be their defense. So what happened to Dalton connect? Nothing?
Didn't play nothing, he did not play. And then you
look at the Clippers bench, and what do you have?
Fifteen minutes? Bugdanovic he could play twenty five And you're like,
(30:47):
and he had a goose egg in the first game exactly,
But think about this, if he had just hit a
couple of one shots. Oh no, ye know, they'reup to
twenty turnovers. Yeah, like how about fifteen turnovers guys? Yes,
seven by a.
Speaker 4 (30:58):
Quiet I mean I think about that turnovers on the
road and you lose in overtime.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
Exactly, and that's why the odds barely moved at all
even though they and then they win in Game two
again tight game. You know right now, the combined score
in these two games is two fifteen to two fourteen
between these two teams.
Speaker 4 (31:17):
Honestly, Demo's played better than I thought, because that was
the big question, you fire your coach, you know, three
games left in the regular season, which is still mind
bodling to me that any team would do that, and
how would they react. I thought they reacted phenomenal in
Game one to come back to win that game down
fifteen the Clippers. But over the course of the series, again,
as long as this group of Clipper players can stay healthy,
(31:38):
the Clippers honestly com beat anybody.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
In this if you had to pick one, which you know,
and think about the path, right If the Lakers only
have to win three more games against the Timberwolves, who
certainly do not look like a formidable opponent. After that,
they get a Golden State Warriors scene that's playing a
lot better. But old beat up Curry's got the thought,
(32:01):
Jimmy Butler is he absolutely is. But at the same time,
would you rather play the Warriors in the second round
or would you rather play the Oklahoma City thunder Like right,
the Clippers are going to have to run into this
buzzsaw and this ten player deep MVP of the league
Shay Gilles Alexander in the second round if they get
past the Nuggets. And yet I would still pick the
Clippers to be the team that's more likely to end
(32:22):
up in the conference finals.
Speaker 4 (32:23):
I asked Tyler when I was out of practice, and
I knew the answer is one of those questions. We
asked the question, but you already know the answer. But
the question was, are you approaching this opening series with
a long term goal of obviously winning a championship. You're
a coach that's obviously navigated that, you know, in your
Cleveland day. And I knew he was going to say,
(32:44):
you know, look, we got to focus in on one
team at a time. But you know, I'm just talking about,
you know, not just minutes for your starters, but how
much you're getting that bench ready. You know, maybe I
don't need them as much against Denver as I'm going
to need him down the road if we have a
matchup against oak Case. So you know, he sort of
gave me the look like you know what I'm gonna say, But.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
You know, we're focused on Game three. Yeah, exactly, that's
what we're focused And a really good team, a championship
caliber team, is going to be sent home. Jamal Murray's unbelievable,
And yeah, he's a postseason player, man, And Yoki is
the best player in the world trying to contend with
But it's it's wild, right, like I think about it,
and it's when they re signed Kawhi. And first of all,
(33:28):
I've always said, and I'm sure he's a very nice
guy by all accounts, anyone that's ever come across him
says as much. Could not have been happier to get
Paul George out. I've always felt like he's a fraud.
Speaker 4 (33:37):
Well, he was the guy that forced him to make
the worst trade in NBA.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
Hist oh I did. He said, I'm not coming unless.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
They give up Shay Shay Gills is Alexander and seven
like number one picks exact to get Paul George.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
Yeah, and Paul was He's just he's not a star.
And then when they went to trade for James Harden,
I was like, Wow, we're really going to do this
and then he's back and then what do you see?
You're like, Yeah, turns out you stars you need Jimmy.
But but you know what, he loves you. I was
doing this dual interview with him and Zubots next to
each other.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
He loves Zubats, I mean Zubots loves Harden because he's
obviously helped take his game to another level.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
But he loves that big and all of a sudden
the assists are up, but he's making shots now. Yeah,
you know he looks like the beard of old MVP
James Harden. Yeah, I mean one of the ten best
players in the league in his prime when he was
doing it. Whether you like the style or not, it's.
Speaker 4 (34:25):
Are you look at I know you are an NBA
nut money? Yeah, you like you know Chicago Kidders. You
came to Pepperdine and just like I am, I'm in
with the Lakers. You get your you know, season tickets
up in the rafters from day one way up there.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
Because you are die hard? Are the good news?
Speaker 1 (34:45):
So far?
Speaker 4 (34:46):
Early returns on this postseason numbers are up. Like, you know,
I'm a big NBA guy as well. I mean I
I go back to when Wilt was acquired by the Lakers. Okay,
that's how far back I go. But are you are
you happy with the state of the NBA right now?
Speaker 2 (35:00):
No, At least the regular season, I found it to
be boring. I barely watched Wally many well on. Don
McClain put it best when he joined this. He said,
you know, if I we were asking him when all
of this was being kicked around, right JJ Redicks taking
shots at Berkley, and Barkley's taking shot and and Don,
I thought succinctly with a singular point, and we should
go to break after this. You're You're like Vick and
(35:22):
Michael with me right now? He uh, he said, they
don't care. He's like, when I played, we cared, well,
that is Adam Silver. You're in the command.
Speaker 4 (35:32):
When Adam Silver rips the media for their negative coverage,
I'm like, well, then do something about it. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
No, he just no, no, he said, like when when
I played We'd fly. Is if I'm on Miami and
we're flying in the DC, We're like, hey, f these guys. Yeah,
I hate him. I hate him. We're gonna bust his
ass up. And then after the game you're drinking beers together, like, hey, man,
you see what I I never saw d mac hug
an opposing player at any levels of We took it seriously, man,
(35:58):
we want to beat everybody's ass. Ye, that's what the
goal was. He goes, and it's just not it's too
much money.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
Man.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
These guys have to they're celebrities. They're not basketball players.
They're celebrities, and they all.
Speaker 4 (36:10):
Try a commissioner. It gave him control exactly.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
Yeah, that's what he did. But you know what, David
Sturn wouldn't stand for this. I just don't know what
you do when you know the eighth guy on the
bench is making twenty two million bucks a year, It's
like it's hard to kind of get what you need
to get, you know, when the mid level exception is
twelve million bucks. It's just a different deal. We'll keep
(36:35):
it going. Steve Hartman is here. Word number song dead Alive.
We've got it all. We've got Dodgers Baseball coming up
against the Cubs. See if they can get the split
in the series after blowing it last night. All of
that between now and about that hour and five minutes
from now before we hand it over to Dodgers on deck. Well,
each series tied at one. Lakers Timberwolves, Clippers Nuggets Game
(36:57):
three tomorrow night. It'll be right here. From Baja to
the Canadian Rockies A M five seventy tip off at
seven pregame at six with Auta Maws and who just
popped his head in here to say hello. Everybody paying
their respects to Steve Hartman. Is he Man's a mic
in a spot where he made so many magical memories?
Speaker 4 (37:19):
Well, technically I was sitting in your spot. Technically not
gonna let you have that. You have that, no, and
deserve rely something here. It's great to see all everybody here.
I mean, it's just it's been phenomenal just to be
back in the building and see mister.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
Weeze and BB and the whole lot of here.
Speaker 4 (37:39):
It is interesting to see my buddy Brian Long sitting
in that corner office over there, that's.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
Made some music don in San Diego.
Speaker 4 (37:46):
Together we did we built something out of nothing and
he is as good as not the best in the business.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
I mean, he is phenomenal. It's been great to have
him supports the show, supported the hair brained idea to
have you come in to fill in. Did he really like, Okay,
that's a great idea. Okay, let's do it. I'm always available.
And it was on the phone when we were talking
about the bar fight with Vince.
Speaker 4 (38:10):
Neil Well we had that was that was an amazing
I was amazed that you remember that that I had
told you that.
Speaker 2 (38:16):
So I remember Petros had the initial memory of it.
He's like did He was like, is this a fever
dream of mine? Or did Steve tell us the story?
I said, oh, yeah, he told us the story, and
I remember it. It was a celebrity race. Yep. It
was out at either Willow Springs or Button Willow, one
of the two, in the middle of like Lancaster, and
it was a ROUDI crowd.
Speaker 4 (38:34):
I had never been to Lancaster. That was that first
year I was in the race, nineteen ninety five.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
Did you ever go to land?
Speaker 4 (38:39):
I mean, you're you're not that long out of LA
It's like a different hour in it, yeah, like literally
different looks like right. And then you get out there
with you know, Willow Springs out by Edward's first base.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
And got the airplane graveyard. He got this Where am
I off that fourteen freeway It's like, where is this Lancaster,
I believe is where you make that turn to Mammoth. Yeah,
so you hit it and you know, like you grab
a little Carl's Junior action or something and then bang
off the Bishop, get some jerky and then bang you're
at Mammoth. But who it was, Vince Neil?
Speaker 1 (39:08):
It was?
Speaker 4 (39:09):
It was Matt LeBlanc, the Revelation, Yeah, Matt, Matt the
first year of Friends. Yes, and also Cameron Dia she
was I think twenty two years old. He had done
the mask but that was it, but wasn't what's his name?
Anthony Edwards from ear was in our race and then
of course we well Jason Priestley was a race but
he didn't bother with hanging out with the rest of us,
(39:30):
like he was way too big.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Grant Show, Yeah, your boy, Grand Show Place, Yeah exactly,
still a friend, Still in contact with Grand Show. I
haven't talked to Show. I still have a lot of
the phone numbers, I bet. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (39:44):
Matt, Matt LeBlanc, phenomenal guy that I remember sitting there
talking to this guy, like, you know that first year
of Friends is already a big hit. I go, what
does this mean? Like this is one year into the show.
He goes, it means I'm going to be very rich. Yeah,
I mean and he was a young guy, right, and
he's like because he had done some married with children,
you know, like the boyfriend that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (40:04):
And I would say, there's no reason for Matt LeBlanc
to not be a great guy. You step An s
like that? Really? I oh?
Speaker 4 (40:12):
He called us the next he actually called us like
the Emmy's like, can you believe? Like we're up for
Emmy Awards. I'm like, hello, who's this Matt.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
Mat Perry or any Aniston? And it's like I get
to tag along him and swimmer Man just tag along.
Cash The checks don't make anything, But what do you
do forever?
Speaker 4 (40:31):
You know?
Speaker 2 (40:31):
And that's why I don't blame these guys. Make a
movie with a monkey, that's what you do. What do
you think you do? So LeBlanc did, what do you do?
Speaker 4 (40:38):
Now?
Speaker 2 (40:38):
Make a movie with a like.
Speaker 4 (40:39):
Seinfeld like he gets in his car, let's take a drive,
you know, let's do that exactly right?
Speaker 2 (40:43):
Yeah, Hartman's here. We went too long in the last segment,
so we're gonna get back on schedule, exactly right. One
more hour to go, word number song. Next segment some
Dodger conversation, Dead and a live guy, Hall of Fame
talk A lot to get into Heisman talk. Niko, do
(41:04):
you know I have a Heisman vote?
Speaker 1 (41:05):
I do know that.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
I've been made aware of that nearly daily for about
ten years. That's fifteen years vote and you still have it?
Oh yeah, oh yeah, never given that up, never never
giving that till death to his part. How many people
have a Heisman vote? About eight hundred.
Speaker 4 (41:22):
There are eight hundred and seventy media members and then
all past winners. That's the total number of voters.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
Interesting, Yeah, most prestigious? Do you believe it to be
the most It's the most recognizable sports trophy in America?
It is, right, no question.
Speaker 4 (41:36):
I mean, who can't identify the Heisman trophy? Right?
Speaker 1 (41:39):
That it is?
Speaker 2 (41:40):
Do you believe it's the most prestigious trophe?
Speaker 4 (41:42):
I think it is because it's the I mean, how
many how many trophies have their own commercials?
Speaker 2 (41:46):
The Heisman House, I guess I should say, is it
the most If you had to pick one award in
your career, whatever it made, whatever, it would be green
jacket from the Masters. That's the only one. I was thinking,
that's the green jacket. But at least you get to
take you know, you only get the green jacket for
a year and then you have to leave it at
(42:07):
the club. But you're now a member of the club.
Speaker 4 (42:10):
You are that dinner Billy Caster, the late Gray Billy Caster.
I talked to him at length about being a Master's champion.
It's I think that if you're a golfer, you have
literally reached utopia, right because they dreat you like a god.
Even if you're Charles Coody or Danny Willett or Charlotte Schwartzel,
(42:30):
it doesn't matter. You are a god the rest of
your life. When you walk there at Augusta Nash, you've
punched your ticket. So good to golfer's paradise. That is
the one place I've never been. If I were to
choose one place to see that, I've never been to
August No question.
Speaker 2 (42:46):
Next year, let's do it. Let's do it. We're number sung.
Speaker 4 (42:50):
Next
