All right, here we go our two in Los Angeles.
It's the Herd. Wherever you may be, however you may
be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day.
J Mac Sun was in town, went out for some
good food, watch some NBA basketball. I gotta tell you,
Minnesota Denver. I watched that second half mouth Ajar, I'm like, wow,
(00:52):
Denver shrinks offensively. I'm alone not happy after pick it
on the poor media. It was something to watch.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
You know what happened Saturday. But did you watch the
fourth quarter of OKC MAP?
Speaker 1 (01:03):
I think it was. I think there's an argument to
be made the second half of Dallas OKC was the
best basketball game played on this planet for a year.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Unbelievable. Lakers Nuggets went to the buzzer or whatever, but
that game was.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Just unbelieve The crowd the offensive playmaking. It was an
I was in Los Angeles in front of a TV,
but with some friends at a restaurant in Los Angeles,
OKAC in Dallas. There were gasps. It was not shot
making was just incredibly incredible. Uh, you know, you and
I have talked about this. The talent in the league now,
(01:41):
there's nothing like it. Everybody we glamorize and romanticize the
Regg Miller Pacers. He was the only guy on that
team that could shoot. I mean, the Knicks had no
pure shooters. Even John Starks wasn't a great shooter. He
was a great athlete and a fun guy to root for.
But I mean the quality of marksmanship and playing and
this sport now is incredible.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Yeah. I know we haven't done anything on it yet.
Maybe you will at some point. But what do you
think the vibe would be if Lebron lost to Game
seven at home a twenty point leadue just wasted and
then Lebron lost Game seven and they got dusted like Jokic,
like it happened Yokic yesterday. How would Lebron be being
treated today? Well, you know it's not. Lebron's probably watching
(02:24):
He's right, that's not fair. We're not blasting Jokic. If
any superstar blew a twenty point lead at home in
Game seven, I'll be getting torn to shreds Well, I
don't think.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
I think. I mean Jason Tatum is defended at every
corner and I've been promised to ring for years. I
think Jokic, Jokich is the reason this thing went seven.
I mean he he he is. I mean like Gordon
gave the Nuggets nothing yet.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
MPJ is he on the trade trademark? Michael Porter Jr.
What happened?
Speaker 1 (02:54):
He hid nothing and he makes a fortune. So to me,
you can blame Jokic. Yo Kitsch is why it went seven.
Jokich was listen. Jokic admitted, look at their roster, I
mean the look he said it. Look at Minnesota's roster.
It's built to beat us.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
He's worked forty seven minutes yesterday. He was very good.
But it's just like usually his superstar gets to blame
Joe el Embiid Labron.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Yeah, but Joe Lmbiid doesn't have a title like Jokich.
Joe l Embiid can't win a second Eastern Conference series.
I think the media has been totally fair with Jokic. Today,
the American media is applauding the Tea Wolves, not banging
on the Nuggets. And that's exactly my take, which is,
let's give Minnesota credit. They have a hell of a team.
(03:38):
I'm not going to give Indiana credit because the Knicks
fell apart. If the Knicks didn't have the injuries, the
fact this game was close and went seven no o
g no Brunson, no Randall, no Mitchell. If you took
Halliburton alone off the Pacers, it didn't go seven games.
Colin right, Colin wrong. On Monday, here we.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Go where Colin was right.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Well, the Celtics breed into the Eastern Conference final. Listen,
the Eastern Conference is bad, and Boston may not be great,
but they're balanced. They're a top five offense, they're a
top five defense, and I mean, you know, they avoided
playing Jimmy Butler and Bed got hurt and Dame got hurt,
and so the Eastern Conference was weak. It got significantly
(04:22):
weaker due to injuries. But we said we thought it
would be gentlemen's sweeps all the way through for the Celtics,
and that's what you've seen. A well rested team.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Now where Colin was raw.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
I thought the Denver Nuggets had a chance to do
San Antonio and be a dynasty, and maybe they still could,
but they were outplayed, outsized, out flanked yesterday at home
in the second half. Jamal Murray, I mean, he had
some rough games in this series. He Jokic even got
pushed around at times. Gordon disappeared. They gotta tweak the
(04:54):
roster and find more of a bench. They only scored
thirty seven points with ok at home in the second half.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
So I was wrong where Colin was right.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Well, the fifth straight year, sixth straight year, the NBA
champ hasn't made it past the second round, and I've
said this reminds me of the seventies. I've said this repeatedly.
I think we have a bunch of very very good teams.
I don't think we have a Bird Celtic, a Magic Laker,
a Duncan Spur. I thought Denver could be it, but
we're going to have a new champion. And I think
(05:27):
it's because the league is now all these European players
are all spread out. They don't they're not nearly as
willing to join other players to go to a super team.
Europeans don't want to do that, which is cool. And
so I think we've got the seventies, a bunch of
very good teams, none that are going to be historically great.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Where Colin was raw.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
Well, I never thought soft Indiana, mentally soft Indiana could
win a game seven in New York. And yes, a
lot of it was due to the injuries, but I
will give Rick Carlyle a ton of credit. He went
after his team. He questioned their toughness. He questioned the
Pacers fortitude. You do not see that in the NBA
(06:08):
very much. Where a coach calls out his roster, calls
them soft, calls them weak. This is a players league.
In Carlisle questioned them, and they played in nearly perfect
first half of basketball and some pretty good basketball in
the second half. So I didn't see it coming this
team until yesterday. I thought sort of lacked a maturity
(06:30):
in the mental toughness, and they showed up yesterday with it.
Where Colin was right, Jared Goff got appropriately a massive extension,
second highest paid quarterback annually in the league. I've said
it for years. He's not flashy, he's not hyper athletic.
He can always use a good running game, but just
(06:50):
sitting in the pocket and throwing to open receivers or
throwing open receivers. Jared Goff is top five or six
in the league. It's remarkable how close his numbers are
with McVeigh to Matt Stafford. He's a really good quarterback.
He's not as much fun to watch as Lamar or Mahomes.
He's not as much fun to watch his is Jalen Hurt,
(07:13):
Sir Josh Allen. He not, but he's an exceptional quarterback
and was appropriately rewarded by a smart front office.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
Where Colin was wrong.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
I thought the NFL was gonna give Aaron Rodgers a
tough schedule because of his prickly controversial manner and the
NFL doesn't like controversy. But instead they loaded up the
Jets schedule outside of the Niners opener with a bunch
of winnable games early to give him momentum. And what
the NFL was telling you is that they think Aaron Rodgers,
(07:46):
because of his controversy, is outside of a Patrick Mahomes
and the Dallas Cowboys, maybe the third most interesting player
in the league. So they want to get him on
TV as much as they can before the Jets, which
they tend to do. Where Colin was right, The NFL
said it for years. They are attacking the NBA. Christmas
(08:08):
is on a Wednesday. They don't care Netflix. Here's two
games with star quarterbacks. They're attacking college football in December,
putting on a Saturday game against the college football playoff.
The NFL is a juggernaut, juggernaut. It is a business.
It does not mind hurting feelings, and they view everybody
not the NFL as a rival, even college football.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
Not a surprise to us where Colin was rough.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
The story today the Lakers are rumored to be eying
Donovan Mitchell over Tray Young. First of all, I was
told Lebron's camp likes Trey Young. I also think Donovan
Mitchell really needs the ball. A very high usage rate
in the regular season goes even higher in the postseason.
So I don't know how it works. Lebron needs the ball,
(08:58):
doesn't love to play off ball. And I also don't
see the Calves and Dan Gilbert doing the Lakers and
Lebron any favors in a trade. But the story this
morning is Donovan Mitchell, not Trey Young, is who the
Lakers are buying an an.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Where Colin was wrong.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
Well, the Sons apparently are running it back. Booker, Durant Beal,
the Sons are gonna run the whole thing back. I
don't know why they need a point guard, they need
a bench, they need more size. But instead the GM
(09:36):
says we're not trading Durant bal or Booker why they're
massive cap hits. Beal doesn't appear to be working. Kevin
Durant reportedly not terribly happy where Colin was right. Finally,
Caitlin Clark is struggling out of the gate, and I
think it's the WNBA's fault. December tenth, the WNBA had
(09:59):
their low and New Indiana would have the number one pick. Well,
guess what that gave you? Eight days to give the
fever a little easier schedule. Instead, they loaded it up
with the New York Liberty in the Connecticut Sun playoff
teams excellent teams dominating defensive teams. Now Caitlin Clark is
(10:20):
still scoring. I think she's going to be excellent and
there's nothing really to worry about. But we've talked about this.
The NFL is constantly doing favors to networks to create
storylines early in a season. Give Jim Harbaugh a couple
of soft landings to start. Caleb Williams opens at home
(10:42):
with Tennessee, doesn't face the Packers until week eleven. To me,
the WNBA, the fever or winless, Caitlin Clark struggling. There's
not that many teams in the WNBA. Did you have
to start like it was unplanned and give them a
gauntlet of New York and Connecticut right out of the shoot?
(11:03):
Colin Wright Colin wrong on a Monday. And Rick Buker
is now joining US Live. You know, we talk about this.
Ten of the eleven top scorers are out. Three of
the four teams that remain are excellent defensive teams. There
was a mid season tweak. I think it makes the
games fascinating and intense and physical. I love that basketball.
(11:25):
But was it as intentional as I'm making it out
to be, which is we're gonna swallow the whistles, the
All Star games and embarrassment. We're just gonna get out
of that kind of basketball because it feels like an
intentional move by the NBA and it's benefited defensive teams.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
Yeah, well, certainly the season didn't start that way, and
right around the trade deadline, All Star Game or All
Star weekend, that's when we started to see a level
of physicality that we hadn't seen all season long. And
there's certain teams that are built for it, certain teams
that are not, and UH and the teams that are
(12:04):
that are comfortable with that, particularly on the wings. This
is the biggest element that I'm seeing in the turn
in terms of the teams that have advanced in the
teams that haven't, is do you have not just one,
but two elite defenders? And if we look at you know,
go any further than Denver Minnesota, Minnesota with Jade McDaniels
(12:25):
and UH and and Anthony Edwards were just too much
for Michael Porter Junior and Jamal Murray playing off the wings.
The only only accomplished defensive player on the wings that
Denver had was Contavious Caldwell Pope, and he was giving
up some size and had to defend Anthony Edwards obviously
(12:47):
as a handful. So to me, looking at what has
separated teams and what makes Boston and Indiana coming up
really interesting is those matchups on the wings and how
many of them do you have?
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Aunt didn't play particularly well on one side, but he
did deliver defensively, and I said, I'm impressed with his
self awareness, and I'm impressed that and I think sometimes
there's a difference. Britt tom Brady talked about it this weekend.
There's a difference between a star and a winner. And
the NBA has always had stars, but how many have
their priorities in order? Zion didn't, John Morant didn't. To me,
(13:24):
Aunt and MJ exhibited this very early. MJ wanted to win.
MJ gave up points to win. It took a while,
it took Phil Jackson. But I feel like, don't do it,
don't do it. I feel like Michael was willing to
give Kerr a shot and Kukoach a jumper. That's how
I feel like. Aunt wants to win more than he
(13:45):
wants to have a brand. That's what I feel like
watching him. You don't believe it.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
You could have done You could have done all that
and not evoke the name Michael Jordan.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
Why you have to do that? Well, because he's great
in his game. Looks like it a little bit, not
all the way, A little bit. By the way Kayleb
Williams looks like Mahomes. It's okay. If you can't handle
the comp you're not going to be a star in
any league. You got to be able to handle some comps, okay.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
But Anthony Edwards is saying I'm not Michael Jordan, and
good on him for saying it. Look, this is what
I love about Anthony Edwards is that he is a
willing student, but he is still just learning the game.
And he reminds me a little bit of Alan Iverson
in terms of the role that he plays with.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
This team, as.
Speaker 4 (14:36):
What Alan did with the Philadelphia seventy six ers when
they went to the finals, which is he's a little
bit crazy, He's wildly talented. He's willing to listen and
be part of what you're trying to do. But we're
going to find a way to create guardrails and have
everybody else play hyper efficient basketball and do a lot
(14:58):
of the the strategizing and the thinking. I love that
ant Was is a willing playmaker. I mean, he has
all the tools, there's no question about it. And I
think his personality that they're outside of him and one
or two other pieces. They're kind of an old team,
and I think Mike Conley in particular, is just get
(15:20):
feeds off of the energy and the rambunctiousness that Ant
Edwards has, and that's how it works. But look, Michael
Jordan from the very beginning was the orchestrator and he
was doing it at both ends and yes, in order
to win it all, he adjusted his game and found
a way to utilize the pieces around him. But we
(15:43):
just it's way, way, way way too early to be
putting Aunt Edwards in that conversation.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
So I look at the Nicks and they they're you
don't want to be too precious because you can only
go so far with toughness, resilience and defense, and you
do need skill. But there is something about the Warriors
dynasty and the heat culture. It's hard to create and
even harder sometimes to sustain. And it's a real thing
(16:12):
with New York. It's a real thing. And you could
bring in the wrong piece here and it goes sideways.
Those you know, baseball, a third of the roster in
baseball is down in the bullpen. Half the NFL guys
go to one side of the field the other half.
It takes one guy to erode culture. In the NBA,
we've seen the heat get guys and get rid of him.
(16:33):
We've saw the Warriors got a D'Angelo Russell, get rid
of him. Jordan Poole, who is the right guy for
New York to maintain the culture, but get more skill
on the wing.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
It's a fair question. It's not just on the wing.
I believe that actually the piece that they really need
is they need a dynamic stretch forward. They need a
Christaps porzingis type of Karl Anthony Town's fis the mold.
But to your point, does he fit the chemistry there?
And I will say this is the basic philosophy in
(17:07):
the NBA, which is you can handle one of those
guys in your locker room right if he gives you
all the other things you need, you can find a
way to corral and get the most out of that guy.
You don't want to because then you have a committee,
and that committee is gathering and having meetings in some
(17:27):
part of your locker room, and then that ends up festering.
So I believe that the Knicks could look at it
simply from a need perspective. Obviously they are a little
bit small on the wings that they could use a
little more size there. That Villanova Trio is overachieving for
their size and their general physicality. But I think the
(17:50):
one piece that they're really missing is that stretch for type.
Because if you look at the front line once Julius
Randall was hurt, Mitchell Robinson is not a threat from
outside three feet. Isaiah Hartenstein's really not a threat from
outside three feet. And that's why oj Ananobi had such
a big impact because he was the closest thing to
(18:12):
having a stretch four type. But he's six seven and
two thirty. You'd like to have like a six y
nine six ' ten guy two hundred and fifty pounds
who can stretch the floor and give you a little
bit of rim protection. To me, that's the big piece
that they need. And having that culture established now in
New York, I think they can afford to go go
(18:35):
get a guy who you may have to bring along
and convinced to be part of it.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
All right. So I'm not even gonna ask you about
Celtics pacers. I don't think Indiana matches up defensively. They
met five times, Celtics averaged almost one hundred and thirty points.
Let's go to Dallas against Minnesota again. Excellent defensive teams,
I could argue the two best closers in the series
are both Mavericks. I would argue the best defenders in
(18:59):
the series, it's a little bit of a wash. The
size advantage goes to Minnesota. I think it's a series where,
like Denver Minnesota, they'll be coaching, will matter, tweaking, games
will look different game to game. I would go Minnesota.
Your thoughts, Yeah, it's.
Speaker 4 (19:20):
Going to be, without question, a very intriguing series. And
you pointed out all the reasons why you really have
a great defensive team. The question that I have is
can Dallas defend well enough against that size? Is Derek
Lively and PJ Washington going to have an impact in
(19:40):
the same way they did in the previous series. And
on the flip side, can Minnesota score effectively enough in
order to stay with them? And it really comes down
to what we saw at the end. Dallas is at
its best when it doesn't become Luca and Kyrie centric.
That is going to be the easiest way for Minnesota
(20:01):
to win this series. It's when those two guys are
moving and moving the ball and they're getting everybody involved.
That's when Dallas is most dangerous. And we saw it
kind of come and go back and forth throughout that
Dallas series. I want to see if they can consistently
go to that, especially with Dancic being I would imagine
that sprain knee is still going to give him some issues. Yeah,
(20:24):
but and if he's compromised, he needs to be able
to move the ball. I'm leaning Dallas going into the
series because of their ability to score and how PJ.
Washington and Derek Lively and Daniel Gafford and all those
complimentimentary pieces came to get Derek Jones Junior, like all
(20:46):
of those guys had big, big moments and kind of
bailed Kyrie and Luca out in the fourth quarter of
Game six. If they can continue that going, I like
their chances.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
Good stuff, Rick Buker, good scene on Monday, Budge.
Speaker 4 (21:00):
Hey, sorry to both sort to burst the bubble on
on the Michael Jordan Anthony, I can tell that really well,
they kind of look it, kind of demoralized you.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
I don't mean to do that.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
We should be all happy today.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
Well, yeah, I don't understand why people the media and
I don't understand it to me. You know, what's the
old saying, it's a tough men create tough times. Tough
times create soft people. Soft people create soft times. If
young people can't handle a com of a great player,
(21:34):
they're not built for it. Caleb Williams can't handle the
Mahomes comp He ain't built for it. Being compared to
Jordan's is a privilege. In my take is there's some
there's some times I watch him and I see it now. Now,
Michael's the best player probably of all time, so it's
look at Jamack. But I don't have a problem with
comps because my takeaway as basketball players buying larger coddle
(21:56):
than America. Anyway. The AU system's garbage, so it's like
accasionally it took like when Rick Carlile ripped his team,
I was like, that's a football coach. And by the
way his team answered the bell, like the Pacers literally
played with more mental strength yesterday than they had in
a series. So I'm not bothered by it. But I
do think I can't watch ant and not see a
(22:16):
little Michael. The look, the swagger, the lower row.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
Yeah, for sure, for sure, No, there's there are similarities.
I just I guess the part for me is that
it doesn't fully respect all that Michael Jordan was you know,
we've we've I don't know how we got to this
place where it's like he was just a dynamic scorer,
dunker like no, he was Defensive Player of the Year
(22:43):
in MVP in the same season like he and he
orchestrated everything. The triangle doesn't allow you to pile up
assists by the way it operates. But make no mistake,
he was the playmaker for that team. He was the
one that orchestrated everything. Anthony Edwards does not orchestrate this team.
(23:05):
It's why when and rightly so, like the game that
they got blown out, Michael Conley wasn't there. Michael Conley
is a vital, vital He's the Yoda of this team.
And without that, Anthony Edwards is simply not the same player.
And never we were never there with Michael Jordan and
saying he's not this if he doesn't have this guy.
Speaker 1 (23:28):
That's fair, all right, Bukes, thanks my man. You know
Jay Mac I will give you this. You have loved Dallas.
I think a lot of it's because you like Chuckers.
You have liked Dallas all year, But when you watch
them play, I think what makes them really formidable now
is their front line. They're big, they can push back.
That's why they match up with Minnesota pretty well. I
(23:49):
would take Minnesota, but I could see a series in
which it's kind of physical and ugly and Minnesota gets
frustrated because I mean, we saw it yesterday, like if
Ant's Notts scoring, then you really become dependent on Kat. Now,
Cat was good yesterday, So both Kyrie and Kat can disappear.
Luca and I kind of feel like I get greatness
(24:10):
somewhere offensively defensively, but Karl Anthony Towns can kind of regress.
Kyrie disappeared for a couple of games in that series.
I'm not worried about the stars in this series. It's
going to be This is going to be the rare
NBA series Conference Final where role players will also have
great value. There's a lot of size and depth and
athleticism on the wings.
Speaker 3 (24:31):
So Ann Edwards already came out and said, I'm guarding Kyrie.
I want all the smoke. I'm gonna guard him and.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
That will affect Kyrie, it will.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
But Kyrie's a way better one on one guy than
Jamal Murray. Jamal Murray's quick and a great, great shooter,
but I think Kyrie be okay. The matchup is Jada McDaniels,
who somebody said on social media, which was I thought
was good. Jada McDaniels can be the Pippin to Anthony
Edwards's Michael Jordan because McDaniels is long in twenty three
in game seven, yeah yeah, on the road. He's a
(24:58):
great defender. And somebody stick together a video of him
locking up Luca like a year and a half ago.
I mean totally. Luca couldn't do anything.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
I My takeaway is Dallas is a better offensive team,
but Minnesota is built to slow down Dallas's offense. I
think enough it's a six to seven game series.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
You know, we've seen this before. Luca and the MAVs
faced Utah in the playoffs, back when they had Mitchell
and Gobert, and Luca hunted Rudy Gobert to the point
that he was off the floor in the fourth quarter.
He just they were putting him in action every single time.
And Gobert has no chance none against Luca in the
pick and roll. And I think they're just going to
do that until they get Gobert off the court. I'll
take the MAVs in six.

Speaker 1 (26:09):
J Max is going to be so happy when Luca
makes the final. He's going to be so happy. He's
going to be so oberjoyed.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
Were you surprised at how Buker kind of was aggressive
with the don't mention Jordan with Anthony Well?
Speaker 1 (26:20):
I think the media. I think the media does that
as a rule is they're trying to protect the kids,
and they're not kids anymore. I mean my son, my
son was coding at eleven. I mean, my son's traveled.
Kids aren't there. They can handle it. And by the way,
the European players are better than our players because they're
not coddled. They can handle comps. They play against older men,
(26:41):
fewer games, the games mean more the coaching is harder.
It's I'm not opposed to it. I mean there's unrealistic things,
but Caitlin Clark can handle the pressure. Ant can handle
the pressure. When I watch him, I do see some Michael. Yeah,
that's yeah, I mean, you see it now. It was
a different time again. Michael multiple years of college played
(27:02):
with Sam Perkins, Dean Smith, James Worthy, was tough. He
went to Chicago. It was a mess of a franchise.
He was tackled by the Pistons. It was the downs
that created the ups for Michael. He was always an
exhilarating player. But Michael had great broadness to his game.
And what I'm complimenting Ant on is I'm seeing that
with Ant and Michael had a lot of bad shooting nights.
(27:24):
Believe it or not, you didn't see it on Sports Center,
but he had a lot of bad shooting nights. Michael
would just shift into physically dominating, talking trash, and then
Michael started winning. When Phil Jackson came in and said,
you gotta trust Kerr, you gotta trust Scottie, you gotta
trust these guys, And that's what Ant showed me. Ant's like,
hey man, I'm gonna go defense. I trust my teammates,
(27:47):
and I think that's where I see with Michael. Michael
was a prodigious score but it wasn't until Michael had
the intelligence and self awareness to go Sometimes somebody else
got take the shot, and that was the birth of
the real Michael the legend. Michael the Star was one thing.
Michael the Legend is a lot of phil and a
(28:07):
lot of understanding of Michael. That you can score sixty
that got ten of our eleven of our top scorers
are out of the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
Triangle offense was huge.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
Yeah, and so Michael was great. And Michael would admit this.
Between Dean and Phil and David Stern and Nike and
Scottie Pippen, there were a lot of things. Michael was granted,
took advantage of all of them, but he was granted
the best coach ever, actually a very smart GM maybe
the best Robin ever, the best Phil Knight, the smartest
(28:37):
apparel guy ever. There were a lot of people that
elevated Michael, not just Michael. And that's not a knock
on him and.
Speaker 3 (28:44):
My Edwards, by the way, goes down to the MAVs.
It's not a big deal. Jordan had a bunch of
playoff failures before finally breaking through to get to the finals.
Remember Piston's Celtics couldn't get buy anybody. And that's fine.
Speaker 1 (28:55):
Now, Michael was all defense nine times. But when I
watch Ant play, I see a player similarly that could
be all defense nine times. His body type is thick
and sturdy. He didn't get hurt.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
He looks like a football player, doesn't he?
Speaker 1 (29:08):
No question, Michael didn't. So I mean Ant's body tells
you he is like Lebron. You look at Lebron's body.
Tatum's got this. Oh, They're built for it. Ann Edwards
is built to be a dominant defender, relentless energy. The
comp is not a stretch, is he Michael? No, But
it was a different league in a different time. Michael
(29:30):
never developed a great three point shot. I think Aunt
Edwards will develop a better and better three point shot.
But his mid range game, his sort.
Speaker 3 (29:38):
Of SGA killed the MAVs in the mid range. And
you wonder does Anthony Edwards eat also because remember Jordan
and Last Dance said he after they lost to the Pissons,
he had to get in the gym and get strong.
That's him. Up and Edwards is not get stronger. He's jacked.
Speaker 1 (29:51):
Yeah he is. And I gotta tell you, I think,
and it's not. I don't think I'm putting pressure on Aunt.
Ant says, I'm not. Jordan Ant is saying that because
he has the cell awareness to know that's the most
popular player in the league history. He still is the
most popular guy, probably if he did a poll. But
you can't watch Aunt and not see some Michael. In fact,
I'll tell you other player. Kobe was, like I always felt,
(30:13):
was a little bit the more artistic version of Michael.
He wasn't as strong, had better range. Kobe had better range.
But we all Kobe was largely mimicking much of Michael,
so we got Michael. Michael was a stronger player. I
thought Aunt is stronger than Kobe, and I would say
and is up there with Michael. So I see the
(30:34):
physical and also Kawhi Leonard has a little bit of
Michael's hand size and ability to use his body wiry strong.
I think. I think if you look at three players, Aunt, Edwards,
Kawhi and the late Kobe, all of them together and
this is Michael's greatness. They all have Michael qualities. And
it's okay. When we fell in love with a player
(30:56):
to do comps. People watch Mahomes, He's so much fun.
It's okay to watch Caleb Williams ago. That's I mean,
I have a scout who I trust. He's like, Caleb's
better now than Mahomes was in college.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
That's okay, Okay, it's okay.
Speaker 1 (31:13):
It's like our kids. We have big goals for our kids.
It's okay if they fail a test, if they're getting
all a's, the tests aren't hard enough. It's okay. I
said this before. Granted countertops and Crown molding kill ascension.
Your life's too easy. Like the minute the kid walks in, Oh,
I got a beautiful, beautiful countertops in Crown molding. The
(31:37):
suburbs are beautiful. It's like, it's part of what drives
greatness is doubt. Those Piston Celtics series built Michael Maney.
He was He was a scorer, but he wasn't a
great team player. Early Phil made him a great team player.
(31:57):
Take a break, come back with herdline after this. If
you start talking, Michael, we can just do a show
on it. Sorry, say no, don't be sorry, say big
and your water and energy bills with a Navian tankless
water heater. Go to tanklessmade Simple dot Com fifteen year warranty.
It's the Herd.

Speaker 1 (33:00):
Roy Hibbert, the former Pacer centers joining us next hour.
He gave Lebron James trouble. Those Pacer teams, those Pacer
heat games were intense, very intense. Jmack with a news
no no turn news.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
This is the herdline news.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
Georgetown Hoya's legend l Hibbert, Yeah, I remember him.
Speaker 1 (33:23):
Well.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
Let's start with Tua Tongue of Bailoa.
Speaker 3 (33:25):
He's been absent from most of the team's voluntary offseason work,
but today he showed up for OTA's while he continues
his long term negotiations. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports to
his camp has rejected at least one contract offer from Miami.
A separate report indicates the Dolphins we used contract bonuses
(33:47):
to provide themselves with long term financial security. These two things,
if to me, they add up to Miami's not sold
on to as their guy. But if that's the case,
why didn't they draft the quarterback early or right up
to give one.
Speaker 1 (34:01):
I don't know about this process. Mike McDaniel I, I
you know, listen to his camp is going to tell
you this. He was healthy all year and I'm wildly productive.
Miami's going to push back with yes, but we have
a history here of injuries, So what's our out if
he gets hurt again? But I remember, here's the utter
thing we were one year ago. We were absolutely, universally,
(34:26):
summarily all agreeing one more concussion for Tua and maybe
it's time to retire. Okay, that was one year ago.
What's changed? He didn't have one.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
We know of it. Well, he changed, he adapted, right,
he didn't. He tak some offseason jiu jitsu or whatever
and a bunch of stuff, and now he's.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
Health and he was given credit for that. But if
a guy is one concussion away from potentially hanging it up,
Jared Goff doesn't get hurt ever, Like.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
That's Burrow gets hurt, Trevor Lawrence gets hur right, and one.
Speaker 1 (34:56):
That's why I said, one more injury for Burrow. I'm
drafting another quarterback.
Speaker 3 (35:01):
Okay, let's play the game that we did with Daniel Jones.
Miami says, can't figure out a deal to thank you
for your service. You don't want to play for us
for thirty five or whatever silly number. Bye, Tua hits
the market, he'll have he'll find it by exactly. Daniel
Jones did not have one. We agreed nobody in the
league would touched Daniel Jones. If the Giant said no,
they foolishly overpaid. Tua will get snapped up quickly. Vegas
(35:24):
could get him right. He's probably not a cold weather guy.
As we Tua will have a market, there's no question.
So Dolphins can't screw around here.
Speaker 1 (35:34):
Well, but there's a difference between screwing around and saying
we'll give you forty four million, not fifty five, and
we want it front loaded because we don't want to
get trapped. I mean again, I'm not anti to it.
The numbers gotta be right, like the Kirk Cousins deal.
Can I front load it? So if you get hurt
in Thanksgiving and say I'm done on retiring, I'm punished
(35:57):
for a year, not four.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
I think two is probably gonna be a My guess
is they would be amenable to that. But you said
forty two and forty five. I think that's reasonable.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
Forty two I could live with.
Speaker 3 (36:08):
I'm just gonna remind Dolphins fans who are like, whoa,
we got to do money when Damn Marino leave Miami,
how long has it been since you've had a franchise quarterback?
Go ahead and rattle off all the bums they've had
at quarterback Colin in the last two decades plus. It
has been brutal when you get one, just like you
find a good barber. We talk about this a lot.
You grabbed that barber. He's your guy, right, you lock
(36:28):
in reservation.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Yeah, mechanics don't want to be bouncing masseuse.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
I think is key.
Speaker 1 (36:35):
You got to you don't.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
You don't get massages.
Speaker 1 (36:38):
I'm a working man.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
I don't have time for Richie fancy stop it. You
gotta start getting messages throwing plates around. You got to
keep those muscles in tune. I think you got a
hold on her. To forty forty two to forty five
I think is reasonable.
Speaker 6 (36:51):
Well so do I.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
You don't think too You think two would reject that.
Speaker 1 (36:55):
I think he's going to look around the league and
say what you're paying me? Daniel Jones?
Speaker 3 (36:58):
No, no, Danie Jones is at forty. But the other
thing is there They said Tuas cam't rejected one contract offer,
no money mentioned like usually we get leaks.
Speaker 1 (37:09):
I think it's much closer to forty two than fifty two.
And that again, this is why I defend Atlanta with
a Kirk Cousins move. That move is heavy, guarantees, heavy,
front loaded. If Michael Pennix by Thanksgiving your like Michael
looks better bench Kirk move on and Kirk becomes a
high you could move Kirk again.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
I guarantee you would you give two of the Kirk contract.
Speaker 1 (37:33):
Yeah, that's more reasonable. That's that I think they have
coming off an Achilles. I know, I know, but Kirk
also hasn't had I think that's a reasonable contract. I
don't think people keep saying this. If all of a
sudden we find out Michael Pennox is ready to play,
you don't think you could move Kirk Cousins again. And
he doesn't have a market. If TUA does Kirk Cousins,
(37:53):
Russell Wilson had one. You didn't get what whoa?
Speaker 3 (37:56):
He got like no money.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
But Kirk Cousins doesn't come with some of the cringiness
that Russell fair or not, is viewed to bring to
the room. That's whatever you want to say, that's out there.
Speaker 3 (38:08):
Okay, fair enough. Let's move on to Sean Payton. He's
got his QB and bo Nix got him with the
twelfth pick. We've heard from Peyton on what he loves
about his new signal caller. And now we've heard from
Nix on his early experience working with Sean Payton here.
Speaker 1 (38:21):
It is awesome. He teaches me, you know so much already.
Speaker 6 (38:26):
He's got a lot of knowledge, and you know, he's
built a pedigree to where you know when when he talks,
you listen. So that's what I'm excited to continue to
to just learn learn from him more and more each day.
And you know, as we go through practices and walk throughs,
you just can't learn enough from him.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
Two things young quarterbacks need a smart offensive coach and protection.
You can live without weapons early, you got to have protection.
So Peyton's a smart coach. They have a better than
average O line, and I think between Mims and Courtland Sutton,
their weapons are fine. They're okay. They're not great, they're okay,
they're fine. Mims a nice young rookie player last year,
(39:07):
and I think Courtland Sutton's excellent. By the way, there
have been a lot of Courtland Sutland trade rumors. A
lot of people want him, and Denver doesn't want to
give him up. So Courtland Sutton's a very very good
number one. He's a really good receiver.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
A lot of optimism for a team with a five
and a half wind total.
Speaker 1 (39:21):
Well, because we haven't seen Bonnicks play. I don't get
the five and a half wind total. I do not
get it. Good to bet the over, I have no
problem doing that if California would let me bet.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
I do think we need a Vegas road trip. You
and I kind of like a Hangover part five, you know,
and like go to a pool and the tank top action,
then some gambling.
Speaker 1 (39:41):
Come on, it'll be fun. We can do an afternoon
Can we fly back the same night?
Speaker 3 (39:47):
Chopper out to Vegas? Back shopper? Do you get your door?
Dash here? Vital stories to the NBA where the Lakers
are on the hunt for a new head coach. Remember
they can Darvin am recently. According to Sam Ahmik, one
of the reasons l got rid of Ham ready for
this because Anthony Davis was not on board with him anymore.
A mcads that with AD's history of having asked for
(40:08):
a trade, the last thing they wanted was for Ad
to be frustrated and ask out.
Speaker 1 (40:13):
I mean, come on.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
According to the Athletic, the next head coach hire will
be more about Anthony Davis than Lebron. Jan Bouja jovonn
Buja says that the AD has a good relationship with
Pelican's assistant coach, James Brego, and he's a name to
keep an eye on. Now he has interviewed for the job.
(40:37):
AD and Lebron are in the same camp, right, clutch.
Speaker 1 (40:40):
Yeah, they like each other. They play well together.
Speaker 3 (40:42):
It's almost like they've waited a little bit and wanted
to deflect egg. Lebron didn't get anybody fired here. This
is about Anthony Davis. Hey, Ad, can you shoulder this?
Can you handle this leak? Yeah, yeah, I'm good. All right,
We're gonna take it away from Lebron and put on
your show.
Speaker 1 (40:55):
That's a good call. You think that's what's happening Lebron's camps? Like,
could you take some of the heat on them?
Speaker 3 (41:00):
Do you think Anthony Davis is saying, I get this
hamd guy out of here, ham cheeze, see this, get
him out? Come on? Do you think Anthony Davis is
acting like that?
Speaker 1 (41:08):
All I know about Anthony Davis is the fact that
he wasn't even on the ballot for Defensive Player of
the Year. And I do not I've been hard on
the Lakers since I moved to LA. Was outrageous.
Speaker 3 (41:19):
You were worked up about that.
Speaker 1 (41:20):
Anthony Davis was one of the few guys that made
Yokich work for it. Anthony Davis had a sensational season.
He was unbelievable. He played a ton of games and
he lived at seventy some games.
Speaker 3 (41:33):
By the way, was it odd? I don't know if
JJ Reddick was calling shoot Dead. I don't know what
series he was calling, but might have been the Dallas Okay. See,
it was just weird hearing him and knowing he's like
interviewing for the Lakers job. I'm still stunned that JJ
Reddick could be the next next Lakers head coach. I
don't think it's going to.
Speaker 1 (41:50):
Happen right well, it feels like his name, it was
very much a talking point a week ago, and now
it's not a talking point. So he have his interview,
and I don't know. I think a lot of it
is the names are getting out there and the Lakers
are looking to see how people react to the names
and the ad story and the Lebron story. Lebron was
(42:11):
taking a beating in the media from like people that
are Lebron people. They were banging on it. Michael Wilbon
banging on it.
Speaker 3 (42:20):
That's out of character for Wilbon.
Speaker 1 (42:22):
Well, I mean, but he's a straight shooter. J Mickle
the News, Well, that's the news, and thanks for stopping
by The herd Line News. Roy Hibbert Next hour, boy,
I just I don't know if the Jets and the Mavericks.
I'm not rooting against Dallas, but if Dallas gets and
(42:43):
wins the championship, the Mavericks and the Jets get to
the AFC Championship, it will not be a good day
around here.
