Speaker 5 (00:46):
Oh I'm great, Jay Mac.
Speaker 6 (00:47):
This is It's my birthday weekend, so I'm like fivees
are high.
Speaker 5 (00:51):
This whole week.
Speaker 6 (00:51):
In the next week, we're gonna have a great time.
Speaker 5 (00:54):
The next two day.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Indeed, birthday weekend. Is there Vegas on the horizon?
Speaker 4 (00:58):
What do we doing? Like?
Speaker 5 (00:58):
You know, I work on weekends.
Speaker 6 (00:59):
I have sports radio show on Saturdays, baseball on Sundays,
and yeah, birthday Monday.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Wow, everybody's excited.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Alex has the birthday and my Dallas Mavericks come through
last night. How about that. We're gonna start the show
talking NBA finals. Yes, I will get to the quarterback
of the Jets who said some more extreme things yesterday.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
I had nothing wrong with that. He's an extremist. We'll
get to it, but I need to start with.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
The Mavericks and Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, Jason Kidd,
what a performance that was.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Listen.
Speaker 4 (01:27):
NBA playoffs have been thrilling, and I you know, I
want to be a positive guy. You know, Alex even
said the vibes are flown.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
I need to be positive. So I'm not gonna start
the show.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
Going after Aunt Edwards aka the next Michael Jordan. Come on, folks,
Dwayne Wade's a much better example. But I'm not gonna
I'm not gonna go after him, right, I'm not gonna
take a shot at you know, Rudy Gobert struggling mightily
against Luka Dancic.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
I'm gonna start positive.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
I'm gonna start with Kyrie Irving, and I need to
apologize to Kyrie Irving. I'm sure you guys saw after
Minnesota dispatched Denver in Game seven, the Cock sure. Anthony
Edwards said, oh, I put I had the cuffs on
Jamal Murray. Jamal Murray had thirty five points and next up,
I want all the smoke from Kyrie. I'm gonna got
guard Kyrie Irving. Well, Kyrie Irving came out in Game
(02:16):
one last night and had twenty four points in the
first half. Out of character for him is he had
been kind of a slow starter, letting Luca lead the
way early Kyrie went off. You could see in the
video there on FS one anytime Anthony Edwards.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Was on him. Barbecue chicken, I'm going right to the basket.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
And Kyrie Irving talked to Charles Berkley and company about
that last night.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
You had home mine of your business the other night?
Speaker 7 (02:39):
What about it?
Speaker 8 (02:40):
You put your if you have a founder, just chilling,
probably having a nice meal.
Speaker 7 (02:43):
And then the young fella.
Speaker 9 (02:44):
Says, I got Kyrie so and he said excuse me,
and he said it.
Speaker 7 (02:51):
Again, he said, I got Kyrie.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Yeah, that's the most aggressive you being in a long time.
Speaker 7 (02:56):
Sir. I know that had to irk you a little bit.
Uh use it as a motivation, you know, when I
was sitting at home and I saw it, I was
like it's just a nod of respect.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
How about that.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Be careful what you wish for, young fella. You know, listen, hey,
we all say stuff. Anthony Edwards regretted it clearly, But
let's focus on Kyrie Irving, right. I mean, that is
such a good perspective from the old man Kyrie Irving.
And I can call him old at thirty two in
these playoffs, which has been characterized by young stars everywhere,
Kyrie's kind of the old guy.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
The old head. Now.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
I've had a personal checkered history with Kyrie Irving when
he came into the league. Man, this kid had all
the swag, the drip, the riz, whatever.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
You want to call it. He had it.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
He had those cool viral commercials when YouTube was kind
of popping, and then he was Uncle Drew and made
a movie and everybody loved Kyrie Irving. And I don't
know whether the stardom and the fame went to his
head or that game winning shot against the Warriors in
Game seven on the road went to his head. But
Kyrie went sideways and it had been a bad run
(04:01):
for him personally. I mean, we're talking about a guy
who demanded out of Cleveland with Lebron after winning a title.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
There were reports that.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Kyrie Irving said, you know what, if you don't trade me,
I'm gonna go ahead and get surgery that I may
or may not need, and they traded him. He goes
to Boston. He's with Young Tatum, Young Brown, Marcus Smart,
they had a squad, and Kyra's like, yeah, not for me.
I don't need these young guys. I can't deal with
these young guys. So then he goes to Brooklyn and
that was an epic disaster. I mean, he drags Kevin
Durant with him. I think I said at the time
(04:30):
that this ruined Kevin Durant's career, and you could argue,
Kevin Durant's gone all downhill since leaving the Warriors for Brooklyn,
and he did that to follow Kyrie Irving. Like I said,
Kyrie Irving was a cool guy. People like him around
the league. He's got an elite lay up finishing package
around the rim. Nobody does what Kyrie Irving does. But
it flamed out spectacularly.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
I mean, you guys remember a Brooklyn.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
The guy's burning stage in the locker room and James
Harden's looking at him like bro what the hell's going
on here? Kyrie was going sideways, and you know, then
there was the whole bubble situation where the players were
trying to get to the bubble and finish the season
and have the finals, and Kyrie Irving publicly went on
a call and was like, why are we doing this?
Speaker 3 (05:11):
We shouldn't finish the season, we should not play And
it was just Kyrie Irving was was having a moment.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
You know, we don't personally know what these athletes are
going through off the court with their families or their
girlfriends or wives or what have you. Kyrier was going
through some stuff and he ends up demanding out of Brooklyn.
That was that just was unbelievably bad. And he lands
in Dallas and a lot of people are like, well,
this ain't gonna work.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
But but Lebron James is a guy who thought it
was gonna work.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
And me, the whole time I thought Kyrie Irving was
the scorpion and the Scorpion and the Frog story, which
I think I've told on this show before. You guys know,
the scorpion wants to cross the river and ask the
frog for a ride, and the Frog's like, no, you're
gonna sting me and I'm gonna die. We'll both die,
and the scorpion says, no, no, no, I'm different now,
I'm not gonna do that. Frog says all right, fine,
(05:59):
gives him a ride halfway across the river.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
What does a scorpion do? Bing Frogs like, why the
hell would you do that?
Speaker 4 (06:05):
We're gonna die, and they both die, and scorpion says, yeah,
that's what I do.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
I'm a scorpion.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
I thought Kyrie was the scorpion, and now all signs
indicate he's all grown up.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
In these playoffs with.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
Dallas this season, there's no more need I need a
week off to go to my sister's birthday. There's none
of that. He's got his a cleaned up. He's been
a model citizen in Dallas. He's working great with Luca.
Maybe he's just a better two than he is a one.
He's not the leader that he was trying to be
in Brooklyn or trying to be in Boston, and he's
(06:37):
better a number two guy. And I'm just telling you,
MAVs are three wins away from the NBA Finals, and
I would not be surprised at all. I think they're
the betting favorite in my eyes to win the NBA Championship.
Now let's pivot to the NFL and my favorite team
in the league. Yes, the New York Football Jets mired
in I don't even think I can call it mediocrity.
(06:59):
They have the longest playoff drought in the NFL. And
this is a Jets team, Folks, with their expectations last
year and then what four snaps into the season, Aaron
Rodgers pops his achilles and it's over. So Rogers is
supposedly healthy. Jets made some great free agent moves. They're
back on track. A lot of the sharpest gamblers will
(07:19):
have one of them on in the third hour. Really
love the Jets. There is a lot of momentum around
the Jets to go to the Super Bowl, perhaps win
the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Well, Rogers took to the podium.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
In New York yesterday and here's what Aeron Rodgers said.
Speaker 10 (07:33):
As you get older in the league, if you don't perform,
they're gonna get rid of you or bringing the next
guy to take over. I mean, it happened in Green Bay.
So and I'm a few years older than I was
back then. Well, I think if if I don't do
what I know I'm capable of doing. We're all probably
going to be out of here. So I like that
(07:54):
kind of pressure.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
Though, anytime I hear I like that kind of pressure.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
It reminds me of Steven jack who I've shared addressing
room here with at Fox and Steven Jackson had a
great quote, I make love to pressure.
Speaker 7 (08:06):
You know.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
I can't stop thinking about that quote.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
But regarding what Rogers said, like, that's not normal quarterback speak.
You don't go to the podium and say, hey, if
I don't deliver, everybody's done, we're all toasted, We're all
in the unemployment line.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
You don't hear that.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
And it made me think of this quote from Sam Altman,
the guy who started chat GPT. Extreme people get extreme results,
and undeniably Aaron Rodgers is an extremist. And that's not
a knock to say he's an extremist. I'm an extremist
in some aspects of my life. I'm sure alex Is
Colin I know is, but Rogers is an extremist. Hey, guys,
(08:40):
I'm gonna ponder my future with the Packers and in
the NFL.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
But first I'm gonna go on a darkness retreat like
that's not normal. He's an extremist.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Okay, you guys know a lot of single fans out
there on the herd.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
Obviously men not women.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
But on the first date, you're not supposed to talk
about religion, politics, or ex'es.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Right, Aaron Rodgers is pulling up to the table. He's
talking about all three of them.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
He doesn't care when he goes to the podium or
on podcasts, he's talking about religion.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
He grew up Catholic.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
He don't want anything to do with Catholic now. Aaron
Rodgers talks politics on religious He was nearly the vice
presidential candidate for Bobby Kennedy, who he refers to at
the podium as Bobby like it's his boy, which think
they probably are buddies.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
But he is an extremist.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
And you know what I said, Extreme people get extreme results,
and I am of the belief. Rogers comes off the Achilles.
They got the new offensive line. They add Mike Williams
from the Chargers. This offense is gonna make the jump
to light speed. Now stop me if you've heard this before.
The Jets are gonna be pretty damn good, folks. I've
been on the show, I think for two years now,
(09:50):
maybe more, and I've been excited for the Jets every year.
I've tempered expectations only because deep down I know this is.
Speaker 3 (09:59):
The year, this is it. It's happening.
Speaker 4 (10:01):
Okay, I know the AFC's loaded, and there's a bunch
of people here in the studio laughing.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
Jason co on the Jets again. Listen to Rogers when
he's saying this stuff, he really knows.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
It's all, everything's on the line. He wants to be
the villain. Aaron Rodgers throughout his career has thrived on
being the villain.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
You know, they draft him. Rhet Farv's hemming and hawing,
do I stay? Do I go?
Speaker 4 (10:26):
And he's getting in these little tweaks, old man Farv, Folks,
he's tweaking. He's poking the bear. He wanted it, Rogers. Basically,
remember he was supposed to go maybe number one in
the draft, maybe top five. He slides all the way
to twenty. You can read some of the reports from
back in the day when he fell. Since then, massive
chip on his shoulder. Okay, and guys who.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
Have chips on the shoulder, I may have a small one.
Some of us.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Do Cowhurd certainly does they thrive on using that as motivation.
Michael Jordan famously would like create the these fake scenarios,
fake trash talk, fake hate, and then use it to
his advantage.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
I believe Rogers is using all this.
Speaker 4 (11:09):
He knows when he goes on podcasts with Joe Rogan
and company and talks about religion and the vaccine, he
is being an extremist. He wants you loving him or
hating him. We're in an era of tribalism, and Aaron
Rodgers is signaling to his tribe. Yo, I'm over here, guys.
It's like that scene I probably shouldn't reference this a
(11:29):
great movie where a guy goes into prison Edward Norton
Junior of course American History X, and he takes off
his shirt and he's all tatted up with you know
what on his body, and it's a signal instantly to
his crew, Hey, come on over here, come hang with us.
Aaron Rodgers is signaling with these comments, Hey, you're either
with us or you're against us. And I'm sure you
know he's getting word of this McIntyre.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
He's against this. No, no, guys, I'm with you I'm
a fan of the Jets.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
I'd love for you to tamp down some of the extremism,
maybe dial back the villainy. But if it works for you,
it works for the Jets, it's got to work for me.
And I see alex is wearing her Can I call
that Jets green?
Speaker 6 (12:07):
Don't do not pull me in this category. This is
not Jet's green. It's a little more of a sea
foam green foam.
Speaker 7 (12:13):
Wow.
Speaker 6 (12:13):
But I know you're excited. Yes, four snaps is your
sample size is slow your role. Let's maybe see an
entire game before we get into oh my gosh, they're
going all the way to the super Bowl. I'm excited
for you that there is hope. Now you know he's healthy,
let's hope he can stay healthy. But he's old, coming
off one of the hardest injuries to come back from
(12:34):
with again, as you said, a lot of pressure that
apparently he thrives off of, and he's saying he welcomes
it and he does better with it. Yeah, let's see
a game.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
Let's see one full.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Game with Aaron Rodgers and the Jets.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
And we have a good staff here, and anytime I
talk about the Jets and the excitement.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
It's Jake. Do you remember his last season in Green Bay?
Speaker 4 (12:52):
He was kind of garbage, not good at all, And
I was like, hey, hey, wait a minute. When they
drafted Jordan Love. He was so angry, thriving off the
anger that he was the MVP of the league in
back to back here.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
So I'm optimistic for the Jets.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
I really do believe good things are ahead, and good
things are ahead here for the next three hours. Coming
up next, I'll tell you why you shouldn't worry about
the wins and losses. Yeah, Caitlin Clark lost again last night,
don't worry about that this season.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
That's next.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd Weekdays
and newone easternn AM Pacific on Fox Sports Radio FS
one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
So everybody's excited for Caitlin Clark in the WNBA. I
said earlier this week, I took my daughter and her
friends to a movie.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
That movie if Ryan Reynolds is pretty good.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
I got out of the movie the first thing I
did was check the WNBA score of the Fever game.
I've never done that in my life. Check a WNBA
score on my phone. Never I couldn't even tell you
who played the finals last year. Caitlin Clark was playing.
I wanted to know how the game was going, and
of course it was close late, So then I pull
up my other app, which is my cable TV, and
I was able to watch the final minute. It was
a disaster, but it wasn't Clark Anyways. Fever lose again
(14:03):
last night. They lose a close one to Seattle. They
dropped to zero to five. Someone in our morning meetings
said that Iowa lost five games last season with Caitlin Clark.
The Fever have lost five games already this season. But
it doesn't really matter the wins and losses. It's largely
irrelevant the mere fact that we are talking about the
(14:23):
WNBA and people are even if you're not looking at
it with both eyes or checking online, you have one
eye on what.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Caitlin Clark's doing, Folks. I've been on the show, Like
I said, I.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
Think for two years, I don't think we ever had
one WNBA topic, not one. We're now doing it at
least once a week. News flash out here in La
Caitlan Clark is visiting the La Sparks tomorrow and I
will be at the game.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
I like, excited to go.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
Never seen her live, but it's it's something that there's
a moment happening for the WNBA and Lebron on his
mind The Game Podcast talk with JJ Reddick about defending
what Caitlin Clark is doing right now.
Speaker 8 (15:01):
The one thing that I love that she's bringing to
her sport. More people want to watch, more people want
to tune in. I saw for the first time that
they they had a chartered plane for the first time
in their league history. You know, they flew private that
should be celebrated in his own right, that should be celebrated,
(15:22):
and it's because of Kaitlyn Clark. Don't get it twisted,
don't get it picked up. Kaitlan Clark is the reason
why a lot of great things is going to happen
for the WNBA.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
Lebron spot on.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
Obviously, Lebron's on a bit of a heater. I don't
know if you guys saw it last night. He was
having to beef with the NBA Challenge rule. Say, oh,
Mavericks had two challenges, they won both another out. That's
not fair, of course, that goes viral Lebron not nicely
just nicely done. But in regards to Kaitlin Clark, like
she had her best game of the year twenty one,
seven and seven.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
The stats, it doesn't really matter.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
If you guys remember Victor webin Yama and the Spurs
last season, wem ben Yama starts out. Okay, they're losing
a million games, but nobody really cares. It's about the
player and their growth and their development. San Antonio Spurs
are relevant again since the Tim Duncan era. Right, they're
back thanks to wemban Yama. Arrows are pointing out people
are excited for wemby next year. Caitlin Clark and the Fever.
(16:18):
They're not gonna win the title this year. Yes, it
was a dumb wager by me to take a long shot,
you know, some pizza money on the Fever to win
the title. They win in the title playoffs, I doubt it.
But Caitlin Clark's growth and development is huge. Did you
see the news this week she became the first female
to sign a deal with Wilson. She's gonna have her
own signature basketball Like that's something Michael Jordan got. Okay,
(16:41):
this is crazy, I mean, the trickle down is unbelievable.
Lebron mentioned the charters. Did you guys see that Kim
Kardashian's brand, Skims is now a partner with the WNBA.
So what did the WNBA do the first week of
the season. Hey, we're gonna dress up some of our
best players who are also attractive.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
We're gonna put them in skins, underwear and put that.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
Online and is gonna go viral and everybody's gonna talk
about the WNBA. Another victory for the league. A little
thing they're doing, just just small stuff. So you know
the NBA players when they walk into the arena, they
have cameras and they capture them.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
Coming in with a fit check.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
You know, they got the earbuds or the headphones and
the cool clothes.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
I think I told this story a year ago on
the show.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
So Steph Curry came into a game once and he
had a Trophy Hunting sweatshirt and I was like, oh,
that is a cool brand name. So I went online
and I went and bought a Trophy Hunting sweatshirt. And
of course, you know, the guy who has the company
saw my name and stuff. He's like, oh my gosh.
So he sent me an email, let me send you
some more stuff and I now wear some of the
(17:45):
guys gear all because I saw Steph Curry walking into
the arena wearing it. Well, what is the WNBA doing? Now,
this is just a small thing. They are now highlighting
the fit checks of the WNBA players walking into the arena.
Caitlin Clark, here's he look at her outfit and then
next thing you know, pretty quickly you can buy her outfit.
And then the tall rookie on the LA sparks Cameron
(18:07):
Brink who's like six foot four, blonde, like super popular
on Instagram. Her outfits are styled so they go viral.
The WNBA is doing a great job on the business
side of things, capturing eyeballs, capturing momentum, all because of
Caitlin Clark. They now announced they're gonna have two new
franchises the WNBA.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
We could call it a fledgling league. That's not a knock.
Not with the Kaitlin Clark impact.
Speaker 4 (18:34):
They now have two new franchises coming to the WNBA,
Chartered Flights brand deals with Kim Kardashian, spanks fit.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
Checks across the league.
Speaker 4 (18:43):
Folks, this is like we're gonna see people at the
Harvard Business School do breakdowns on the Caitlin Clark effect
not that differently than what happened with Taylor Swift when
she was doing her concerts. I'm just I know some
people are like, oh, come on, Jason, stop talking WNBA.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
This is cool, folks. I love this.
Speaker 4 (19:01):
I love all aspects of it. I think it's great
for the league, great for business, great for the brand.
All these women are starting to get more paid, more exposure,
and I think they got to think, Kaitlyn Clark, let's
go to Alex Curry with the news.
Speaker 7 (19:15):
No, no, turn on the news, this is the herd
Line News.
Speaker 5 (19:20):
Just to cap off your Kitlyn Clark rant there.
Speaker 6 (19:22):
I think one of my favorite things that I've seen
is she's pulling in a lot of non sports fans,
non traditional sports fans. You're getting in a whole new
audience that you're bringing not only to the game of basketball,
but the WNBA, and then just being interested in sports,
because again, you have to see it to believe it.
And now that they're getting that national attention, young girls,
(19:43):
women are seeing it, and it's just it's just going
to do wonders for women in sports.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
So it's I love it, But.
Speaker 6 (19:49):
Let's get to our first headline story. The Timberwolves dropped
Game one to the MAVs at home last night. Anthony
Edwards didn't have his best game, scoring just nineteen points
on six of sixteen shooting, and after the he explained
why he thinks he and the rest of the team
didn't play up to their standards.
Speaker 9 (20:05):
We came out flat today, I mean, and then we
found our energy. Then we went back to me in flat.
So I think it was just on us. Everything was
on us today. I didn't get down hail us much. Yeah,
just stuff like that. We was just a little tired.
Speaker 6 (20:23):
Probably tired is not an excuse in the playoffs. Everybody
is tired.
Speaker 7 (20:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (20:29):
Okay, the MAVs what ended Saturday, so they had an
extra day of rest. But then Ant gave Kyrie the
perfect bulletin board material that you talked about off the
top of the show when you're gonna call out one
of their top players and.
Speaker 5 (20:42):
Say I got you all.
Speaker 6 (20:43):
Kyrie's just at home with his family on the couch
watching the game, as he mentioned on the broadcast last night,
and he said it kind of took him by surprise.
He was like, Okay, now I know they're gonna be
a little tired. I'm going to use that to my advantage,
and yeah, this is added motivation. And Kyrie came out
and completely set a tone last night. But he scored
twenty four points in the first half like he was
(21:05):
the MAVs right out of the gates.
Speaker 4 (21:07):
I'm not buying the tired excuse. You look at the
box scort. They're winning in the first quarter, they're winning
at halftime. Tired, you're twenty two years old. What are
you talking about, Karl Anthony Towns is.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
In his prime. I don't.
Speaker 4 (21:18):
It felt like a lot of excuse making. And I
just want to remind some people this is a Minnesota team.
After winning the first two in Denver, they lost three
in a row and they led for a combined one
minute in those three games. So I know we want
to crown them and young Michael Jordan and all this.
Let's pump the brakes a little bit. I don't want
to give Anthony Edwards any Bolton Boar material, but Alice,
(21:38):
he didn't score a two point basket in the second half.
He said he wasn't going down here, he didn't attack
the rim. He settled for threes zero points in the
third quarter. Did he didn't want to attack the big
rookie Derek Lively inside. Yeah, I mean Dallas is a
shot blocking machine. On the interior, they got length. I
like Dallas in this series. Everybody like Minnesota.
Speaker 7 (21:56):
That's fine.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
You know, I'm on an island where I like to be.
I'm an extremeist like Ers. Now I'm over a year.
Speaker 6 (22:01):
Yeah, just when you're in the playoffs, there's no excuses
like everyone's hurting, everyone's tired. You show up and you play,
You adjust, and you move forward. That's how you win games.
All right, let's move on to another young team. The
Cavaliers have fired head coach JB. Bickerstaff after five seasons.
With the team now under bigger Staff, the Cavs reached
the playoffs in the last two seasons and advanced to
(22:22):
the Eastern Conference semifinals for the first time since twenty eighteen.
Speaker 7 (22:25):
Now.
Speaker 6 (22:25):
In a statement release today, Cavs President of basketball Operations
Kobe Altman thanked Bickerstaff for helping establish a culture in Cleveland,
but also said they need to be aggressive and take
risks to move the franchise forward. Now, doesn't it feel
like he was moving the franchise forward? I mean he
got the team, as I said, to the Eastern Conference
semifinal for the first time in six years. That's the
(22:47):
first time since Lebron was on the team when he
lost to the Warriors in the finals. That's a really
big deal to be able to take a young crew
and get them there.
Speaker 5 (22:57):
So what this kind of screen to me is a team.
Speaker 6 (23:02):
Doesn't make a move like this unless your stars aren't happy, right,
and they have a big off season to try to
keep Donovan Mitchell. He's a free agent after next season.
Speaker 5 (23:12):
There have been reports.
Speaker 6 (23:14):
That Mitchell and other of the teammates didn't have confidence.
Speaker 5 (23:17):
In Bigger Staff. So are you shocked by this?
Speaker 3 (23:20):
It's a tough one. I feel bad for Bigger Staff.
Speaker 4 (23:24):
Like you said, first playoff series win since pre Lebron
without Lebron, but this does not look great for Donovan Mitchell,
Like you want.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
To keep your star. It's a star leak.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
Yeah, So they probably went to Donovan Mitchell and said,
what do you think?
Speaker 5 (23:39):
I mean, that has to be what it is, right, I.
Speaker 4 (23:41):
Mean, even if he's like, I don't want to be
involved in coaching moves.
Speaker 6 (23:45):
I mean, they reached the playoffs the last two years, Like,
that's not like a bad like a bad record and
a reason to let someone go.
Speaker 5 (23:53):
He was a part of the rebuild.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
He advanced you to a position you hadn't been at
since you lost the biggest name in the end and
Lebron James. The last time you were there was with
Lebron James. Now we got you there and you're like, bye.
Speaker 4 (24:06):
Yeah, season, season has been over for a week. They
let him twist in the wind. Maybe they were like,
who else can we get?
Speaker 8 (24:13):
Like?
Speaker 11 (24:13):
Who?
Speaker 5 (24:13):
Well? That's together? Like do you have someone lined up already?
Speaker 6 (24:16):
Like that would make sense, like if you have someone
like ready to jump in.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
But I mean, he didn't do a bad job, so
it has to.
Speaker 6 (24:23):
Be some sort of a chemistry thing again with the
star player, or maybe that's the team as a whole.
Speaker 4 (24:29):
I'm not the Donovan Mitchell saga is going to be
very interesting this season, all right.
Speaker 5 (24:34):
Let's switch gears to the NFL.
Speaker 6 (24:36):
Dak Prescott is entering the final year of his contract
and there have been a lot of talk about what's
going to happen with him in Dallas. Jerry Jones has
said he wants to keep Dak, but it is also
willing to let the season play out and Dak added
his thoughts about these contract talks at OTA's this week.
Speaker 12 (24:53):
I don't play for money, never have never cared for it,
to be honest with you, Yeah, give it up to
just to play this game. So I uh yeah, So
so I allow that to the business people to say
say what it's worth, what they're supposed to give a
(25:14):
quarterback of my play, a person of my play, leader
of my play, I guess you could say. And for me,
it's about as I said, control. I can control and
handle that part and the rest will take care of itself.
Speaker 6 (25:24):
I mean, we all do what we love in this
industry for money, So you can say that as much
as you want. But Dak, You're gonna go to the
place that gives you the best deal, right. I mean,
I do think that Dak holds all the cards in
this scenario now, because at the end of the season
he's a free agent. They can't franchise hack him. He
has a no trade clause in his contract, and there
(25:46):
are plenty of other teams that I believe would probably
overpay Dak because he is a good quarterback. Now here's
the question. He's a great regular season quarterback.
Speaker 7 (25:58):
Right.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
He was in the MVP conversation last year.
Speaker 6 (26:02):
But his playoff record is two and five in the
postseason and he's never gotten past the divisional round. So
if you're the Cowboys, I guess that's what you're trying
to weigh.
Speaker 5 (26:11):
And he's had talent around him.
Speaker 6 (26:12):
He has had so much talent around him and the
ability to succeed while he's in Dallas. So it's just
a question of do the Cowboys want to continue with
Dak and think maybe he can get him over that hump.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
So I don't know, have you ever been like a
body language expert person?
Speaker 5 (26:30):
Have you ever body language all the time?
Speaker 3 (26:33):
So I worked it way back when I was a
young guy.
Speaker 4 (26:36):
I worked at this celebrity magazine US Weekly, and body
language was huge.
Speaker 3 (26:40):
It would body language was massive. It made so much sense.
I was like a young Yeadia.
Speaker 4 (26:45):
So I don't really know this stuff, you know, And
and the other people on staff are like, oh, body
language everything you can tell. So if you watch that
Dak video, I don't know if we can play it
without the sound. He's rocking back and forth.
Speaker 5 (26:56):
He feels uncomfortable. Yeah, he also like this season, what
happens if you get hurt? This season, don't have.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
Yeah, he's just rocking back.
Speaker 6 (27:07):
And I mean, as much as you want to say,
money doesn't matter, money matters. That's why you're playing the
game that you love. That's why you're like the most important.
You are the most important, highest paid position in the
league on one of the biggest franchise in the league,
the Cowboys. Yes, okay, yeah, money doesn't matter. I would
do this anyway.
Speaker 5 (27:24):
I love what I do.
Speaker 6 (27:25):
Like he's lying, it's about it's about money. Deal is
gonna be, That's what's gonna happen.
Speaker 4 (27:31):
What's the saying when you say it's not about money,
it's about money or something like that?
Speaker 3 (27:35):
Is that is that a phrase?
Speaker 5 (27:36):
Maybe contract that was about money? That was a big
deal to it always is.
Speaker 4 (27:39):
He doesn't want to be you know, it was short
changed now and he probably looks at Jared Goff's contract
it says fifty three a year. Look at my numbers
in the regular seat.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
What were you talking about?
Speaker 4 (27:48):
And again the sample size, you said, what is two
and five playoff record?
Speaker 6 (27:53):
Yeah, two and five in the postseason and never gotten
past the divisional round.
Speaker 4 (27:56):
I know it's unfair to do this, but seven playoff
games is that a sample size when you have like
an eight year body of work eight times what sixteen games,
I mean seven games.
Speaker 6 (28:09):
Don't they don't do well in the postseason. I mean,
bottom line, the Cowboys don't do well. They haven't for
the last twenty years, haven't done well in the postseason.
Speaker 3 (28:17):
I'm trying to defend him.
Speaker 5 (28:18):
Oh okay, it's oh yeah. I mean, listen, I.
Speaker 3 (28:21):
Want these guys to get paid.
Speaker 6 (28:22):
He's gonna get paid, whether it's by the Cowboys or
by another team. The thing is, if the Cowboys let
it go to the end of the season like he's
a free agent, they can't franchise Tag I mean, has
a no trade clause during the season, So they either
have to get a deal done with him this season
or they're gonna be They're gonna they're gonna have a
much higher price because I feel like teams are gonna
come in and outfit and overpay to get a guy
(28:44):
like Dak Prescott because he is a good quarterback. And
some of these other teams that aren't the Cowboys that
need a good quarterback, they're gonna pay for the most
important position in the league, especially a guy that was
in the MVP conversation last year during the regular season.
Speaker 4 (28:58):
Yeah, I know, it's the last dance phrases played out,
but with the coach kind of a lame duck and
dak you.
Speaker 6 (29:05):
Did when he came this offseason, Jerry Jones say we're
going all in and then what'd you do?
Speaker 5 (29:10):
What was all in?
Speaker 3 (29:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (29:11):
Nothing?
Speaker 3 (29:11):
It feels like kind of the end of the road
here for the Cowboys. And it might be Alex with
the news.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by The
Herd Line News all right.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
Coming up next, has Kyrie Irving? Is he all grown
up now?
Speaker 7 (29:26):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (29:26):
My guy, Kyrie Irving.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
We'll ask one of his former Cavs teammates if we're
seeing a different Kyrie.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
That's next.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon Eastern nine EM Pacific. Paulie Foosco here with
Tony Fusco. You know, as the host of the number
one rated Paully and Tony Fusco show. We get tons
and tons of fan mail every day.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
Piles of it.
Speaker 4 (29:46):
In fact, Tony, why don't you open up one of
those letters right now and read what's inside?
Speaker 11 (29:49):
Hey, listen to this, Dear Paulie and Tony your sports
takes the dumbest and most terribly that Wait.
Speaker 3 (29:56):
Why open this other one? Dea? Paulie and Tony you
so more than anyone? Wait?
Speaker 11 (30:02):
Yeah, Paulie and Tony, you guys are the absolute best.
There you go coming up with the stupidest take.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Forget it.
Speaker 4 (30:11):
Just listen to the Fall and Tony Fusco Show on
the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
Yeah, yes, today.
Speaker 4 (30:18):
Oh Ryan Hollins, former NBA center I've done some radio
with him. He is a great interview. He can be combative.
He's a Kyrie Irving fan.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
What's up, Ryan? How you doing?
Speaker 7 (30:30):
Man? What's up? Brow you been man?
Speaker 3 (30:34):
You can't complain. Life is good. I had the MAVs
last night. They come through. I'm assuming you watch the
game and you're rooting for your guy, Kyrie Irving.
Speaker 7 (30:41):
Huh Yeah, absolutely, man, And I couldn't be more happy
for Kyrie. I got a chance to talk to him,
uh when we went over there and played against the Mavericks,
and the one thing that stood out, man, just by
seeing Kyrie and for what I know, I had him
as rookie year. He's happy and Mark Youban and Nico
(31:01):
and Jake Kidd and those guys. They've embraced Kyrie. And
for him, you know, most of us ballplayers say, you know,
is basketball or nothing? Man? Basketball is everything. Kyrie is like,
I want to be happy, I want to be a
good person, I want to serve my fellow man, and
then basketball is just something I really love and I'm
great and I'm good at And for him it's the
(31:22):
people around him, and he's been embraced in Dallas.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
Yeah, do you feel like he's a different person. I know,
so we don't totally.
Speaker 4 (31:29):
Know these guys what they're going through off the court,
but it seems like he's had some rocky stops in Boston,
clearly in Brooklyn, and now he's he's Is this more
about him maturing or is this like the right supporting
cast in Dallas?
Speaker 3 (31:43):
In front office, They've they've got a history with him,
they know him well.
Speaker 7 (31:48):
He's embraced his role and knows who he is. So
when he's looking at Luka Dante's it's different than looking
at James Harden and Kevin Durant as peers as equals
or Lebron James just saying hey man, I'm the guy
who hit the big shot bron He looks at Luca,
and Luca says, Kyrie, you've been here before, You've done this.
Teach me how to do this. PJ. Washington and those
(32:10):
guys are saying, Kyrie, you're the og in the room. Okay,
what do we need to do better defensively? How do
we execute? How do we come through in these moments?
And Kyrie, we heard him last night during this interview, say,
hey man, I want to win. I don't want to
go home. You know. I think I've taken these things
for granted. And Kyrie has some of the it's the
good problem to have and moments the game has come
(32:32):
too easy for Kyrie. So when you're that good, I
was never that good. I knew I had to work hard.
When you're that good, you have to remember to work hard,
to use your teammates, to play in the system. So
these are all the things that Kyrie's coming around full
circle in his career to take part of, or else
he'll be going home early. And he doesn't want to
be a part of that.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
Struggled Ryan Hollins, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 4 (32:53):
Ryan, we watched Rudy Gobert really struggle last night, and
I dropped coverage Luca just a not related him. And listen,
I remember Luca was picking on him back when he
was in Utah and the MAVs knocked him out of
the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
I didn't see anything different.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
Can Minnesota do anything differently against the Luca pick and roll?
Speaker 3 (33:11):
I don't do they blitz Luca?
Speaker 7 (33:13):
Do they?
Speaker 3 (33:13):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (33:14):
Maybe go Nas read over Gobert because he's a little
more athletic. We saw Nos trying to guard him like
twenty five feet from the hoop. Go bear ain't doing that.
Any thoughts on how Minnesota could adjust here.
Speaker 7 (33:25):
So remember this is game one, and the one thing
this is this is chess Nott checkers, all right, JA,
this is chest not checkers. PJ. Washington okay and and
Jones Junior. They showed you, they showed Oklahoma City. If
you take away the LIB, we will hit the three.
So now they're gonna say we're gonna take away the LIB.
You guys have to hit the threes. And let's see
(33:46):
if you're in rhythm, because we kept you Game one
out of rhythm, and we didn't give up all those
three pointers. I think Dallas only hit what six or
seven three pointers from the entire game, but they got rimmed.
Then the third adjustment, I think what you're saying is
you're gonna switch. And then this is where Dallas becomes
dangerous because you got go Bear or nas Reed or
kat Garden who Luca and Kyrie on the perimeter. So
(34:09):
that's what makes it dangerous. And okay, see was the
biggest headache because they could do what they could go
out and switch. They were able to switch with Dallas.
So now you're in a situation where you have to
pick their poison. So to answer what you're gonna have
to say, they're gonna take away Lib likely the next game.
The next adjustment may be a blitz. The next adjustment
is gonna be a switch. And these adjustments in the
(34:30):
playoffs could come by quarter by quarter. It can't be
that detailed in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (34:36):
I said something on social media that got people ticked off.
I said, I think Luca's got the biggest bag in
NBA history. I mean, you just watch him. He can
beat you with the mid range, the three, the post up,
the vision is incredible and listen, I know last round,
lou Dort is a tough matchup, really good defender.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
He had no chance against Luca. Foul trouble every game.
Jade McDaniel's second team All Defense. He's too skinny. Luca
just bodies him in the post. You don't know how
you stop this guy.
Speaker 4 (35:01):
I do believe he will be in the discussion for
one of the best players in the history of the sport.
Speaker 3 (35:05):
I mean he's.
Speaker 4 (35:06):
Twenty five, I believe, and he's been on like five
oll NBA teams, Ryan Luka, Doncic, unstoppable.
Speaker 7 (35:12):
Right, unstoppable. I'll give you that he may not have
the best bag on his team, Kyrie Irving. As far
as bag and moves and getting to your spots, I
don't know we take them above Kyrie, But I do
agree with you. What's special about Luca And I saw
this coming. I don't know how the kid wasn't the
first pick in the NBA draft. And the thing about
(35:32):
Luca is that he does beat you in a ray
of different places, and even worse, he does it in
slow motion. He does it with a bad need. A
young Bull's gonna be on the injury report every single night,
but he takes his time and you don't realize how
big he is. So he's a mix of Larry Bird
and James Harden. He takes his time, he's in slow motion.
(35:54):
He's big, he's gonna trash talk with you. And when
he's rolling, man, he's seemingly literally unstoppable, because it's not
like those small guards. Is zip past you. He takes it,
takes this time. He puts you in jail. He gets
in that mid range and he can shoot right over you.
Speaker 3 (36:09):
All right, let's go macro big picture in the league.
Speaker 7 (36:11):
Now.
Speaker 4 (36:12):
Obviously, the Lakers a huge talking point with their coaching situation.
Where are you on the JJ Redick potential? Higher this
nonsense that he's maybe the next Pat Ridley. I mean, listen, Hollins,
people are going crazy out here in La.
Speaker 3 (36:26):
What are you hearing?
Speaker 7 (36:29):
I'm all in with JJ Reddick. And the reason is
we forget you act like Steve Kurdin, do this at
a very high level. And also, you're not gonna put
JJ Reddick in the situation his first time as head
coach and not has some veteran coaches, some former head coaches. Hey,
maybe JB. Bickerstaff is the name that maybe could go
and join the Lakers. That can go and teach JJ
(36:50):
some of the little things that he may not know.
But the biggest thing for JJ that I will challenge
him on if he gets the job. Your job is
to relate to the players and even more so replay
to your staff. What's he doing relatable with Lebron James.
He's got Lebron's respect and that we've seen it on
their podcast, which is it's a new NBA man, it's
a new media, okay, coaching player. They might running the
(37:11):
podcast during the season, you never know. But at the
end of the day, he's got Lebron's respect and he
can call out Lebron and Lebron responds best when people
can do that. The only other head coach that would
be in play in my mind, would be Tyron lew
And if it's not going to be Tyron, lu I
think at this moment, you have to go with JJ Reddick.
I play with JJ. He knows the game, he's sterle
(37:34):
and the biggest challenge for him is to be relatable,
connectable and also being able to call guys out in
that locker room. And when I played with JJ, he
had no problems calling guys out.
Speaker 4 (37:43):
Yeah, all right, So Listen, this is kind of flowing
under the radar here the last twenty four hours because
the conference finals are happening. But the all NBA teams
were announced and shake Gilgess Alexander made it. He's now
eligible for the super Max extension.
Speaker 3 (37:58):
Ryan, I don't know if you saw this, but per
the numbers.
Speaker 4 (38:01):
SGA is going to be making eighty one million dollars
potentially in like twenty twenty nine or something. Eighty one
million dollars. Okay, listen, I'm not looking at anybody's pockets.
More power to the people. Get that paper, get that
stack that paper.
Speaker 3 (38:17):
Eighty one million dollars? What's the perception going to be
or does it? Do you just not? Who cares eighty
one mil for SGA? Who's I don't know. Is he
a top five player in the league. I don't think so.
Speaker 4 (38:27):
But he's very very good obviously, Hollins, what are we
doing eighty one mil?
Speaker 3 (38:32):
Hey?
Speaker 7 (38:33):
What do you talking about? He was an MVP candidate
this year and the one thing where you want to
know what the players think. He has league wide respect
amongst the players. He's got the swagger, he brings it
and he has the game to back it up. We
just got done talking about who Luka Doncis. You put
Luke on the platform and said, Luca is gonna be
one of the best ever, maybe the best bag you've
(38:53):
ever seen. Shay Gills is Alexander is in the Luca
Doncis conversation for how young he is, his team's success, they,
for God's sake, they're supposed to be rebuilding right now.
He's so good that they with the number one what
were they? Number one and number two in the Western Conference?
So for Shae Gilty, it's Alexander. I don't think any
players or anybody's going to have a question about the
(39:15):
money that he's going to be making. You see, he's
a young talent and even more so, Hey, the Clippers
are probably looking at back and saying, man, we traded
Shaye away as great as Paul George is. That looks
like an obscene move to make and sent all your
draft capital over there. So at the end of the day,
Shay's deserving at that contract. Happy for these guys getting
(39:36):
money at mcinty. Don't you ever questioned money again? What's
wrong with you?
Speaker 4 (39:39):
So here's the big picture again, I'm happy for Shaye
and everybody but Ryan. Let's be realistic. Okay, the NBA
did not like the Super Team era. They don't like
guys hopping around SGA and Okasey, he's not turning that
down to leave and go somewhere else, right, He's He's
definitely gonna stay in OKAC. So it seems to me
like they're trying to prevent the super Teams from happening.
Speaker 3 (40:02):
I thought the Super Team arrow was amazing? Did you
not think so?
Speaker 4 (40:07):
Me?
Speaker 7 (40:07):
Personally? I loved it. I like the parody that we
have in the NBA. But again, you cannot cry about
things going on. And I want to throw this out
as you talk about Superteam. Look, man, Oklahoma City, they're
playing Zam. Persley's the goat right now. For what he's doing,
it's like they're playing NBA two K. When you go
out and you juice your teams and you get everybody.
What if they went out and they got Paul George,
(40:30):
they went an acquired of Paul George. Hey, what if
Kevin Durant wants to get Lebron James on it says, man,
I got a shot to go to Oklahoma City and win.
So okay, see it's poise to put together a superteam.
I love their culture that they built. And when you
win a championship, it's not just the stars. You got
to have a star mixed with culture. Oklahoma City has
(40:51):
culture right now. They got young stars. Everybody who's going
into that system is eating, they're playing well, they're developing,
and even more so to having fun. And the one
thing I love about Shane and I got to cover
him his rookie year with the Clippers, is he is
a down to earth. He's the same guy and even
with the money, you're not fearful as an organization that
he's going to just devour the room with all of
(41:14):
his success. He's the same guy, and he has embraced
his teammates and the culture Oka see, and it may
really be a desirable place to play. So hey man,
I wouldn't be mad if Katie made that move. I
wouldn't be mad if Paul George said, Hey man, they
treated me right, and okay, see, I wouldn't mind going
back there.
Speaker 4 (41:30):
Oh come on, Ryan Hollinds, it look at you dropping
bombs on the way out the door.
Speaker 3 (41:34):
So I can't respond.
Speaker 4 (41:35):
Catch Ryan Hollands Sundays with Mike harmon Fox Sports Radio
nine Am to noon. Good stuff, Ryan, have a great
holiday weekend.
Speaker 7 (41:41):
Man, all right, brother talk so man, Thanks.
Speaker 4 (41:45):
Ryan, Ryan Hollands, good guy Alex in the Fox Sports
Radio community. And Paul George and Kevin Durant are not
going back to Okay, see, let's be real.
Speaker 3 (41:54):
