Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Our number two.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
Here on the Herd, Jason McIntyre in for Colin Cower,
joined by Alex Curry. Alex, I know you got a
big weekend ahead. I have a major revelation off the
top here. Didn't tell this stuff.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
I'm saying this.
Speaker 4 (00:40):
What After four weeks of no coffee, I went back
to coffee the last two days.
Speaker 5 (00:45):
Yo.
Speaker 6 (00:45):
Okay, so I've been out coffee for about six months.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
It's slent. I had to.
Speaker 6 (00:50):
I had like stomach things, but it was like, it's
really hard. It's really hard the first couple of weeks
and months. But I have found the most incredible like
plant based energy drinks. My dad used to own an
energy drink company, like when we were growing up, so
I grew up on like healthy alternatives to that stuff.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
But I got something for you, Okay, Well, I don't
need the coffee. I was fine, but waking up early.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
You know, no, this riot energy is insane.
Speaker 6 (01:18):
You are going to absolutely love it's it's like a it's.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
A slow roll. And I said, and there's no crash.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Well I went back to the big starbuckstrin, which is
embarrassing now.
Speaker 6 (01:27):
And I know it's just sugar. I mean it's like,
oh milk, I know the audio, little espresso. Just if
you're gonna do it, be hardcore and get like a quad.
That's what I used to do when I was coffee.
Four shots of espresso.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Four shots. That's instant. I I do everything to the extreme. Okay, yeah,
I went too hard.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
We have a good NBA guest coming up, Mark Medino
will be here very shortly. I need to start the
second hour with Aaron Rodgers and my Jets. And I
know I did a lot of Rogers yesterday and a
lot of Jets fans were not happy with it.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
What's going on, guys?
Speaker 4 (01:56):
I thought we wrote together on this Aaron Rodgers thing.
So we had a spirited Aaron Rodgers discussion in the
morning meeting. I have told Coward before, I think we
need a camera in that morning meeting because guys are
piping up saying cool things and I had totally forgotten this.
Do you guys remember Aaron Rodgers was like a beloved
figure in the NFL. People liked Aaron Rodgers. He was wholesome,
(02:19):
Midwest state farm commercials, discount double check. He was, like
I don't know if he was quite the face of
the league, as Tom Brady was around dominating and Peyton
Manning was there, but Rogers was very well liked. He was,
you know how like there's that saying on Instagram like
he's your hooper's favorite hooper.
Speaker 7 (02:37):
Right.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
So I love Zach Lavine. I'm a big Zach Lavine fan.
I will say I've got some zach Lavine stuff that
I heard this week. He's working out here in LA.
I have it from very good sources. Lakers fans just
keep an ear out. But like, I like Zack Lavine,
and if ia Zack Lavine, who do you like watching?
Speaker 8 (02:52):
You know?
Speaker 4 (02:52):
He would tell me and then I would be like, oh,
got it, got it. In the NFL, Aaron Rodgers was
that guy. Everybody liked him, and we're trying to pinpoint
when he went sideways, if you will, and I don't
know what it had to do with internal stuff with
the packers or whether it was COVID, but something went
down in twenty twenty and he came out the other
(03:14):
side as like just a different dude. He's, you know,
going in on the vaccine and conspiracy theories. That just
was out of character for Aaron Rodgers. I don't know
when he made the choice to get political. Maybe he
met Joe Rogan and they you know, they're doing their
own thing. It's fine, it's interesting. He's as polarizing as
he's ever been. Now, he was not polarizing, say twenty seventeen,
twenty fifteen, twenty just so he just wasn't. And you know,
(03:38):
every time I hear polarizing and changing, I think of
Floyd Mayweather.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
And you guys know the famous story of Floyd Mayweather.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
Amazing talented boxer, just a superstar, but he wasn't getting
the purse that he wanted, so he turned villain. He
went full on heel. He became money Mayweather literally throwing
cash around at the strip club. He cultivated this new
personal and instantly became a box office hit and everybody
wanted to get his fights, and he's making money just
(04:06):
hand over his he changed fundamentally who he was now.
I don't know that Aaron Rodgers did that fully or
it was that calculated, but something went sideways, better relationship,
something with his family.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
I don't know. Maybe one day Rogers will tell us.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
But what I do know is that Aaron Rodgers obviously
is piping up a lot this week. He now believes, okay,
that the Jets the most feudal NFL organization over the
last thirteen years, the longest playoff drought in the league.
He believes they are must watch TV. Here's Aaron Rodgers
on Serious Mad Dog Radio talking about the league, the Jets,
(04:43):
and television.
Speaker 9 (04:45):
We are must watch TV and that's pretty obvious. Everybody
knows that. Whether you love me or hate me, people
want to see me play. They enjoy watching me play,
and we are a team to watch this year. Not
surprising as far as us owen. Well, yeah, that's fine whatever,
I don't care what anybody has to say about that.
That's great. You know, for me, it was rough for
(05:07):
the league.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
I get it.
Speaker 9 (05:08):
Me only playing a few plays last year. That's going
to be different this year. And you know what happens
when we play him back this year with six great
primetime games. You know, what are they going to say
next year?
Speaker 4 (05:19):
You know, if I wanted to get a little conspiracy theorist,
I would wonder, well, must watch TV.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
I want to talk about TV and jets.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
I wonder has anybody heard about Rogers since he went
down with the Achilles injury that I don't know. Maybe
he's had a camera crew in tow the entire time
calculating all everything, documenting his recovery and his podcast appearances.
Maybe there's a Netflix Amazon special and the works for
(05:49):
Aaron Rodgers. I don't know anybody else here that Maybe
Rogers sees what Peyton Manning is doing this second act right,
Peyton Manning Omaha Productions.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
I mean, they're crushing it. Maybe Aaron Rodgers sees Tom
Brady's going to Fox to do TV.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
Interesting. What do I need to set myself up for
my next act? Do that quarterback series on Netflix that
was wildly successful? What if they just followed me around?
I've got quite an audience. It's almost as if Aaron
Rodgers has been doing this building up to something.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
Is he gonna release his own special my Recovery and
he's now signaling to his tribe of fans out there.
And you know he's got his tribe, his guys who
ride with him through thick and thin.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
I don't know. You just wonder what Aaron Rodgers is up.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
To ask for the must see TV aspect. Okay, I'm
a huge Jets fan of the are nowhere near the
top five. So I put together my top five must
see TV NFL teams this season. We'll go five to one.
Here we go at number five. I think this is easy.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
The Chicago Bears.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
I mean, we're talking about a coach on the hot seat,
a number one pick who's being anointed as maybe the
next Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
He looked like Olmes.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
You got new receiver in Romadudaz. I even like the
DeAndre Swift pick up. They got Keenan Allen.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Listen, man.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
This Bears team finished last season strong. The defense looked good.
They're in a tough division. I think the Chicago Bears.
I am fascinated to see Kayleb Williams. I will remind
people he did look awesome at times. He had great
plays at USC.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
He didn't win anything, I mean maybe a Holiday Bowl
here or there. But like I need to see it,
and I'm.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Very fascinated to see Kayleb william and the Bears at
number four.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
A bit of a curveball. Bit of a curveball.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Shane Steichen, Anthony Richardson and the Indianapolis Colts. Here's a
franchise that has not won a playoff game since Andrew
Luck retired. Okay, they almost every single year have a
new quarterback under center for Week one.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Not this year.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Anthony Richardson's back, and I'm so excited to watch him
because in the flashes he showed last year, this guy was.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
Dynamic as hell.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
They're never out of a game because he has a
howitzer for an arm, and he is a tank. He's
a Cam Newton type guy running through defenders. Now, he's
got to stay healthy, that's obviously key. But I like
Shane Steichen even oc Jim Bob Cooter has had some
good times with Matt Stafford. I think this is a
legitimate wildcard team in the AFC. I cannot wait to watch.
(08:15):
Maybe I'm the only one. The Indianapolis Colts At number three.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Here we go.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
The Dallas Cowboys, and it's not because they're America's team.
It's because how Mike McCarthy is lame duck. You don't
have a contract extension.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
It's DAK.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
We don't know what's going on there. It's Ceedee Lamb,
not at OTA's. It's Micah Parsons. He was like battling
a sumo wrestler two weeks ago. What's Michael Parson's gonna
do next? I mean after games, he's going on podcasts,
popping off. It feels like it's a combustible situation in Dallas,
and they've had a really good run with DAK.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
It does feel like the end of the line.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
I don't know what the future holds, but I'm very
curious when this goes sideways. Assuming it does, there's some
major fireworks expected in Dallas.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Let's go to number two.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Yes, out here in Los Angeles, I cannot wait to
watch my guy, Jim Harbaugh. Yet, I do have a
lot of guys I like Harball. He does live kind
of near Ish me.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Now.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
I haven't seen him, but I do know his kids
go to a school where a bunch of my buddy's
kids go, and they say Harball every time they see him.
Super friendly and nice. I think he's gonna crush it.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Guys.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
I know there's a lot of newness. You know, Keenan
Allen's gone, Mike Williams is gone. I talked earlier about
compound interest and continuity.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Well, how's this for you? Are you ready? So the
guy they got.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
At OC is Greg Roman. You know where he was
obviously with Lamar Jackson back in the day, and he
knows Harball very well. From San Francisco, They're like Baltimore West.
They got JK. Dobbins, Gus the Bus.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Hayden Hurst.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
I think that, like just that knowledge of players and
Roman and Harball, it's gonna gel quicker than people think.
I think this is a surprise team. I really like
the Chargers this year. And I just give out the
name for fantasy football guys who watch the show, Ladi mcconki.
You've got to get him early. I'm just telling you
he's in for a big year. The rookie out of Georgia.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
And number one.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
The team I'm most interested in watching should be no surprise.
The best team in the NFL, the San Francisco forty
nine Ers, Brock Purty, Doubters, galore. Listen, it's tough for
me to crowbar a brock Purty segment on this show
because the staff is just like it's brock Purty, folks.
I'm telling you, brock Purty is legit. We've got two years,
(10:28):
two years data on brock Purty being one of the
elite quarterbacks in the NFL. I know he's small. I
know he was the last pick in the draft. I
know he's limited athletically.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
He had two playoff comebacks and should have won the
Super Bowl. The forty nine Ers blew that game, but
I can't wait to watch the Niners. The other thing,
little last comment. I forgot who it was, but a
writer said, this is kind of a last dance, if
you will, for the forty nine ers, because one of
Ayuk or Debo is gonna be gone. Kittle's getting up
there in age, McCaffrey's got a lot of wear and tear,
(10:59):
and the defense is getting old at linebacker. I don't
know what the future holes. I think the Niners win
the Super Bowl this year. They've been going to the
NFC Championship Game or Super Bowl every year seemingly. I
think they break through this year. I cannot wait to
watch the Niners. And I know Alex Curry has some
thoughts here. I didn't include the Rams. Chiefs fans are
gonna be butt hurt. Of course, who else.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Am I missing? I'm shocked you didn't put your Jets
on there.
Speaker 6 (11:23):
With Rogers coming back, I mean, I'm I'm excited to
watch the Steelers. I mentioned that in the herd line,
just because of the reality show quarterback situation that's gonna
go down with Tomlin having nothing to lose, with no
loyalty to either of these guys the last year of
his contract, never having losey season, one of the toughest
back ends to a schedule. I think the Steelers are
on there, and then obviously with Rogers must watch TV.
(11:45):
You just did a whole bit.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
It's tough for me with the Jets because I'm watching
them regardless, but like our non Jets fans.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
Like I can't wait to see Gang Green this week,
like it's gonna be Rogers.
Speaker 6 (11:55):
Rogers is the poll, that's who's getting people to the
box office.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
Do you think they're rooting a against him more than
they are for.
Speaker 6 (12:01):
It doesn't matter, That's what polarizing is. You're gonna watch
either because you love him or you hate him.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
He knows that. Well, everybody loves our next guest.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
He's been covering the NBA forever, Mark Medina, Mark, come
on in? Did I call him too early? Here is
the long walk out? What's up, buddy? Covering the league
since twenty ten? Ready to talk about the NBA playoffs?
I don't know if we start with the JV matchup
or goes straight to varsity. Whatever you want to do,
Let's go with Luka Doncic. I'm such a fan. I
(12:28):
heard this week he was compared to and we talked
about this with Rick Buker. They compared him to Larry Bird.
He got little James Hart in action. I've said he
has the vision of magic. Johnson, I don't know where
are you on, Luca.
Speaker 10 (12:40):
Well, Luka Doncich is a generational player. He's a special player.
I don't like the comparisons though. I mean, first of all,
I think that all those different players are distinctly different.
Speaker 7 (12:50):
Magic is about passing. First. Larry Bird three point specialists,
but also had a complete game. I think Luka Dodcrich
is a very special star.
Speaker 10 (12:58):
But we're just seeing the big getting stages of this.
We know that he is a special player, But prior
to this past season, the knock on him was, Oh,
he's trying to do too much, He's scoring a lot,
he doesn't trust his teammates. We've seen growth this season,
specifically with trusting his teammates, partly because he's improved in
that airing, partly because the team is better. He's not
an elite defensive player yet, but there is a buy
(13:21):
in with that. So special player deserves all the accoloides.
Speaker 7 (13:25):
MVP candidate, but I'm not going to compare those players.
Speaker 6 (13:27):
Come on, he.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
Did have two great defensive plays in the final, like
two minutes with the steal off the bad pass by
McDaniels and then the breakup of the lob. I think
it was from Conley to Gobert. He's got an all
around game. I just I balk at the idea that
Jokic is definitely better than him, and tell me you
are in the media. It feels like the media goes
for whoever wins the championship and then goes gaga for them,
(13:53):
And if you haven't won a title, well, you haven't
won a championship, Like, can we just slow down? Luca's
done more in the first five years of his career
than Jordan almost anybody else. I mean Magic went and
played with Jabbar, which is come on, yeah, and Bird
we had a bunch of Hall of Fames with him,
But I don't know, Lucas first five years have been
off the charts.
Speaker 7 (14:09):
You've never seen this, There's no doubt.
Speaker 10 (14:11):
I mean, it depends each voter, but there seems big
picture that there is a carryover effect of a player's
postseason success, even though it technically is a regular season award.
But I think that when you look at Lucas specifically
this season, he was making a lot of inroads with
catching up in the MVP race because of just how
special and dominant he was toward the latter part.
Speaker 7 (14:32):
Of the season.
Speaker 10 (14:33):
So I think it's inevitable he's gonna get championships.
Speaker 7 (14:35):
He's going to get MVP awards.
Speaker 10 (14:37):
They even could happen this season because of how well
they're playing, not just with Luca Dodgers, but Kyrie Irving
being the best version of themselves, and they have a
really good supporting cast with PJ. Washington, Jerreck Lively the second.
They're much better defensive team. They have a lot more
scoring depth than they had in past seasons and it's
the right ingredients at the right time.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
So where are you on Kyrie Irving? First of all
three layers question, we'll just do two number one, what
have your interactions been like with Kyrie as a reporter,
if at all, because he is a squirrely guy. And second,
is he matured past all the nonsense from Boston and Brooklyn?
Speaker 3 (15:13):
Or is this just a perfect fit in their winning
So he's happy.
Speaker 7 (15:16):
I think it's a combination of all these things.
Speaker 10 (15:18):
He's healthier, there's no extraduit, extraanuating circumstances that explain his
absence like we saw in Brooklyn and the fittest better
we'fs being able to see even on other teams when
he is available. He has a great basketball fit, he
has a great talent. He's able to be a score,
great playmaker. But his chemistry with Luca Dodgers has been
(15:39):
able to reach a deeper level because Kyrie can have
the leadership presence. Luca leads by how strong of a
player he is on the court, but he's younger, he's
not really vocal.
Speaker 7 (15:50):
Kyrie can fill that void.
Speaker 10 (15:51):
And then I think when you look at the supporting cast,
they've been dramatically upgraded compared to last season. I even
think last season the fit that Kyrie aErving Luca Doctrich
had it was good.
Speaker 7 (16:01):
They just need more time together.
Speaker 10 (16:03):
Immediately upon arrival, people around the Mavericks organization would talk
about how great Kyrie is behind the scenes. So I
think that now that all the other ingredients are in store,
here you're seeing you know. I think flashbacks of that
title run that he had in Cleveland.
Speaker 4 (16:17):
Could have been a honeymoon could have been a honeymoon
face because we know Kyrie go will go sideways.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
But let me ask HM about Donovan Mitchell. Not Donovan Mitchell.
I'm sorry Anthony Edwards.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
So Anthony Edwards looked to be like a massive superstar
in this league, looks.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
To be awesome.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
Last four games, it seems like defenses are starting to
figure him out. Maybe he's tired at twenty two years old,
which is such a cop out. I feel like we
got everybody got a little premature with Edwards and he
kind of read his the clippings. Remember they won the
first two in Denver, the Jordan nonsense starts and then
they lose three straight, like badly.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Where are you?
Speaker 10 (16:53):
And Edwards Oh, he's a special player, but he's young.
He's going to have ups and downs. I think that
he's going to have bounced back for pformances. The good
thing is I think that he's made of the right stuff. Yeah,
he's honest and says, hey, he wants to take on Kyrie.
But I think that he is a student of the game.
He's developing into a complete player. You've seen him grow
as a passer this season. You've seen him grow as
(17:14):
a defender this season. He's not a finished product though.
The good thing about Minnesota is they have a lot
of roster depth around him. You look at that game
seven against Eever, he did not shoot the ball well,
but play great on defense, and Karl Anthony Towns really
replaced that. I think the dynamic between Towns and Edwards
really good. They can be one A one B. Karl
Anthony Towns also doesn't feel threatened by Anthony Edwards. He's
(17:36):
you know, even remarked to his trainer when he was
out last season that he thought, in a weird way,
is a blessing disguise because this allows Anthony Edwards to grow.
So short term, what does that mean? This is going
to be all of a series. Dallas Minnesota could go
either way. Can make the case for both, but I
think that big picture, Anthony Edwards will bounce back, probably
(17:56):
slow the role of the hype as far as Michael
Jordan goes, but he is the real deal.
Speaker 4 (18:01):
Okay, So wait, you said, Carl Antony Town's like it's
going well. Okay, Mark, Let's say Dallas wins this series.
You've seen all the financial stories written. Owner does not
want to pay the luxury tax historically in Minnesota paying
go bear Kat Edwards, McDaniel's got a contract, now you
got Nasree've.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Got a deal.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
Like, they're not going to be able to keep this
core intact if they don't. I don't think if they
get out of the Western Conference finals, do you think
they all come back next year?
Speaker 7 (18:24):
I think they all come back, no doubt.
Speaker 10 (18:26):
The ownership situation is tenuous, But keep in mind who's
running the front office, Tim Connolly. He was with the
Denver Nuggets, and you know what their play was, Let's
maintain continuity. That's partly what got them to that championship
run last season. So when you talk to Minnesota and
the players around there, they're not looking about trying to
make playoff noise and be that cool, fun story. They
(18:48):
want to win a championship, but if they fall short
of that, whether it's the NBA Finals or in this
West Finals, I don't think it's about making dramatic changes.
It's about trying to use the continuity, uh for momentum
purposes and that compound interest that you've been talking about.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
Nice All right, who would you rather build around Anthony
Edwards or Jason Tatum?
Speaker 7 (19:08):
Oh, that's a good question.
Speaker 10 (19:10):
I like the pros and cons of both players more,
you know, as far as their positive attributes. But if
I had to build around, I'd say Anthony Edwards killing.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Wait, where where did I go wrong?
Speaker 3 (19:20):
With's?
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Okay? I think it.
Speaker 10 (19:22):
Well, Anthony Edwards is a little bit younger. I mean,
Jason Tatum's still in his prime and he's young, but
Andy Edwards has a few years fewer, so that buys
some time. But I think that when you look at
just what his game is all about, he doesn't have
to necessarily be a high volume score. I think that
he is going to continue to morph into being a
playmaker role. Jason Tatum has done that as well and
(19:44):
become more efficient. But I think his natural inclination is
to be that score, and as a result of that,
I think it's easier to build a roster around Anthony Edwards.
That will be with Jason Tatum. But look, I think
we're really splitting there here because the boss is Heldic.
They have so much depth. The fact that they got
chrisoffs Porzingis this past season, they obviously need him in
(20:04):
this playoffs.
Speaker 7 (20:05):
But prior to his injury, that fit has been really.
Speaker 10 (20:08):
Good because it's brought out the best in Tatum, brought
out the best in Jail and Brown. But and he
Knowwards I think is and will continue to become an
even more special player.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
Let's go to that Celtics Pacers series. Halliburton doesn't sound
like he's gonna play. Last time he had the hamstring,
he missed like ten games or something.
Speaker 10 (20:26):
Yeah, so it sounds like injuries are dice. It is
the playoffs, so I keep that in mind. But even
before his hamstring injury, I was talking to his trainer,
Drew Handlin earlier this week. Yeah, he made it clear
that he wasn't even fully one hundred percent because of
the back spasms. Didn't go into great detail, but we
knew ahead of time that Tyres Halliburn was dealing with
(20:47):
some stuff. And the reality is the Pacers, they are
a high powered offense. They play well as a team,
but if they don't have Tyres Haliburt, like, they don't
have a fighter chance against Boston. But knowing how he is,
my hunch is he's going to patch everything together to
at least go down swinging.
Speaker 7 (21:02):
So I think he will play. But these hamstring injuries.
Medical staffs don't want to mess around with this.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
Do you do all NBA voting or no?
Speaker 10 (21:10):
I have in certain years, Sometimes I haven't, and I'm
leaning toward even if I'm eligible for votes, I don't
want to go down that path anymore because and now
it clearly affects player contracts.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
I guess.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
Yeah, so Halliburton got all NBA and now he's eligible
to make a billion dollars because voters voted for him,
but they didn't vote for Jalen Brown. Now he got
it last year, so he's gotten paid.
Speaker 3 (21:32):
It's going to be fine.
Speaker 4 (21:33):
But you're right, is this something the league needs to
I don't know how you tweak it, but tying it
to all NBA does feel a little strange to its votes.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
That matter.
Speaker 7 (21:42):
Yeah, Well, here's the thing.
Speaker 10 (21:44):
Obviously I'm biased coming from the media, but I think
that that is the best pragmatic solution compared to do
you have the player votes, do you have the coaches votes?
Speaker 7 (21:53):
Clearly the players don't take the voting seriously when.
Speaker 10 (21:55):
It comes to All Stars, So that's going to create
more problems and solve them with code, which is, yeah,
they obviously know the game well, but as we see,
when they pick All Star reserves, they tend to more
lean lean more toward players that have been either on
winning teams or that are veterans and that they're familiar with,
and sometimes that makes for the right call, but sometimes
(22:17):
it leads to blind spots.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
So Devin Booker being All NBA over Jalen Brown, Like,
why the hell would the Suns get two guys when
the Suns were a six seed?
Speaker 10 (22:25):
Well, I think another part of this is that when
you're on a team like the Celtics, sometimes when you're
having multiple star teammates, it almost hurts your candidacy because
here's the thing. So different basketball minds, whether it's media
or other people around the league, they're split opinions on, Okay,
who deserves the larger percentage of credit.
Speaker 7 (22:44):
For that team's success.
Speaker 10 (22:45):
So when you're, you know, competing with Jason Tatum and
Chris Osporzingis and a lot of good depth, that can
go against you.
Speaker 7 (22:52):
But Jalen Brown definitely deserving.
Speaker 10 (22:53):
But I think the tougher part about this exercise is
when we talk about All NBA or All Star and
he says one deserving or not. Yes, Usually you can
say yes, but who are you taking out? Yeah, And
that's the hard part. I think Tyre Salivern deserves all
NBA's Well, all.
Speaker 4 (23:08):
Right, we got about a minute left. Donovan Mitchell's coach
just got fired. Bickerstaff. Your best guess as to what
happens with Mitchell when they present in the extension after
the finals.
Speaker 10 (23:17):
My best guess, and it is a guess because in
the NBA it's full. I think that he is going
to come back to Cleveland because of that extension, the
fact that look a lot, you can make the case
that a lot of their shortcomings head of the fact
they went up against Boston and there's injuries. But you
never know, because a lot of teams, including the Lakers,
they are going to try to make their best trade
pitches to get Donovan Mitchell. But I don't think from
(23:39):
Cleveland's end there's gonna be enough of an appetite that
it's worth trading him.
Speaker 7 (23:44):
Even if he denies that extension.
Speaker 4 (23:45):
There's no way to get him to say guaranteed, can't
ask for a trade. You can't do that in because
he could just say give me the money now, sure,
and then in a year I'm out, guys, I'm done trading.
Speaker 7 (23:54):
Yeah, I mean, you just do that.
Speaker 10 (23:55):
Contrex don't mean anything in today's NBA. But it's more
about if he declines it. The writing is on the
wall that he might want to then leave next summer.
You want to get something in return, but I don't
think there's packages available that will be worth it in
Cleveland's mind to do that.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
All right.
Speaker 4 (24:08):
Mark Medina covered the NBA for since twenty ten. My gosh,
you got to see a little Kobe, little Lebron.
Speaker 7 (24:15):
All right, Warriors too, Yeah, little Warriors.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
Good run, just a golden run.
Speaker 10 (24:19):
I think we're going to see w We're both gonna
see the Indiana Fever Sparks game tonight.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (24:24):
I will be there, yeh under the wh can't wait.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
I mean, I'm not betting on the game of My
family's excited to see it all right. Coming up, we.
Speaker 4 (24:32):
Will go to Herd Line News when we're back after
this commercial break.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
Thank you to Mark Medina.

Speaker 3 (24:49):
Let's go to Alex Curry with the news.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
No, no, turn on the news. This is the Herd
Line News.
Speaker 6 (24:58):
Let's keep the NBA Playoff top going because Jalen Brown
was a hero in Game one with his game time
three pointer to send it to overtime, and he kept
those heroics going in Game two last night. Now he
scored forty points, which tied his playoff career high in
the one twenty six one to ten victory, and after
the game, head coach Joe Mazula praise Brown's commitment, saying
that Jalen cares about the right stuff and understands that
(25:20):
winning is the most important thing. Now, j Mac, this
series has quickly become the Jalen Brown Show, and I
think last night's game is how most people thought Game
one was gonna go. Boston came out and really controlled
the game for most for most of the time, and
a lot of that is because of Jalen Brown. Now,
I know we touched on this in the first hour
(25:42):
a bit, but the NBA All Team came out Wednesday night,
Jalen Brown got snubbed, and this game felt a little
bit like, let me show you how good I am
to the rest of the league. I mean, Jalen Brown
scored ten points during a twenty to zero Boston run.
Jason Tatum took a while to warm up, and that
was okay because Jalen Brown stepped right in and picked
(26:04):
it up. And the Celtics are now two wins away
from their second NBA Finals trip in three seasons.
Speaker 3 (26:09):
Yeah, the motivational angle is pretty cool, right. We saw
Kyrie Irving in Game one after hearing Anthony talks about it.
Speaker 6 (26:16):
Yeah, he said, He's like, oh yeah, I was at
home watching watching that post game pressler with my family
and he's calling me out.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
Okay, I'll take that.
Speaker 6 (26:25):
I'm coming after you.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
Don't be fooled.
Speaker 6 (26:28):
Players see everything, even like little things from fans on Twitter.
Speaker 11 (26:33):
Like you.
Speaker 6 (26:33):
Everybody is so easily accessible on social media unless you
have like some sort of setting where you only see
things and tweets and comments from people that you follow.
You're gonna see what people are talking about, especially if
it's trending.
Speaker 4 (26:48):
So it's I'm with Brown here. I think he got snubbed.
I felt like he should have been on there. Listen,
I'll never forget Russell Westbrook averaged a triple double, remember,
and won the MVP.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
I was like, his team was like fifth or sixth
in the West. They got destroyed in the first round.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
How the hell is he the MVP because he put
up a bunch of big stats.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
Get at So I.
Speaker 4 (27:07):
Thought that was bunked back in the day. And I
think you've got to be rewarded for your team's success.
It's not just about numbers.
Speaker 6 (27:14):
This is this is the what is the most valuable
player conversation? Are you going strictly off the stats or
are you going the value that they bring to their team?
Speaker 3 (27:24):
Yeah, like torn.
Speaker 4 (27:26):
On that Lamar Jackson was the MVP in the NFL
last year. Yeah, they had the number one seed. Would
anybody say he's the best player.
Speaker 7 (27:32):
In the NFL.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
No, not as long as Patrick Mahomes is breathing. But yeah, I.
Speaker 6 (27:35):
Mean, he didn't lead the league in majority of quarterback stats,
but he willed his team to get to where they
are the best and it doesn't matter. That's why it's like,
are you gonna go stats? Are you gonna go what
they mean to that team? Are they how valuable are
they to their franchise?
Speaker 4 (27:49):
I don't know what is it like, it's not fifty
to fifty. It's probably like I think team's success. Listen,
if you just want to go stats, there's a bunch
of guys stat padding on crap teams. Like it can't
just be sick forty stats. I think team success has
to be matter more. I think sixty five.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
To thirty five.
Speaker 6 (28:04):
I mean it's tough because do you believe that, like
just in the NBA and NFL, because we've seen Mike
Trout When I think what he has three MVPs now
and he's been on one of the worst teams, I
would say, yeah, two unanimous MVPs on one of the
worst teams with the Angels in the league, like, it's
I mean that's tough too if you are significantly one
of the best, and yes, if you're on a bad team,
(28:26):
that's gonna come down to stats. But there has to
be like in this situation, I think a little.
Speaker 3 (28:31):
Well, baseball is a little more individual like one is.
Speaker 6 (28:34):
It's an individual sport played in a team atmosphere.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
The team is baseball.
Speaker 4 (28:37):
Yeah, like Aaron Judge didn't he had like ninety seven
home runs last year or something or two years ago.
Speaker 6 (28:42):
It's like, not last year, he was injured last year,
two years yeah.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
And it's like that's he's not gonna win. Ninety seven
would be you know, guys put up massive numbers, and
it's like it's got to be more than the numbers.
You've got to win.
Speaker 6 (28:55):
So anyway, yeah, all right, let's move to the other series.
Because the Timberwolves didn't not look like the powerhouse team
we've seen it's postseason. In Game one against the MAVs,
Anthony Edward admitted that they were a little tired in
the loss that head coach Chris Finch did not hold
back his criticism about the team's lackluster performance.
Speaker 7 (29:15):
There was a rough film session, and I told the guy,
it's been a long time so in this.
Speaker 12 (29:18):
Disappointed in your effort and your performance to your attitude,
your application, your attention and detail just wasn't there o
Western Conference Finals started.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
I'm not shore if they got the memo they got
this afternoon.
Speaker 6 (29:31):
I mean, even though the game was close, Kyrie was
playing on a different level. MAVs felt like they were
on a little different level. But if you're going to
take a positive out of that situation, because I like
to look at the positives, is that you were able
to keep it close. And as we heard in the
postgame presser, especially for Man, he said, they beat themselves.
We can't play tired, Like there are positives that you
(29:51):
can take out of this, and I don't know.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Hopefully, hopefully move forward.
Speaker 6 (29:55):
I mean, Anthony Edwards was scoreless in the third quarter
of Game one. None of their three stars aunt Carl,
Anthony Towns or Rudy Gobert scored twenty points in Game one,
and the Tea Wolves had their worst free throw shooting
night in the postseason in Game one, making just sixty
one percent. It's like, all of those things combined are
not gonna win you a game.
Speaker 3 (30:12):
Your stars have to show up. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (30:15):
I like Finn, he's a straight shooter. I didn't love
that quote, Like it's been a long time. What are
you talking about you guys got destroyed at home. Yeah
by Denver, like absolutely pummeled. That was like what ten
days ago. Like, let's let's not act like this was
an out of character thing. Like the Mavericks play really
good defense, Like.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
That's a fact. Mm hmm. I mean, I know, I'm
keeping up.
Speaker 6 (30:35):
For Luca one, Like, isn't that the team you're pulling
for in the postseason?
Speaker 3 (30:39):
Yeah, I am. I'm all in on Dallas financially.
Speaker 6 (30:42):
So oh yeah, okay, that checks out. Let's move to
the NFL. The Bills drafted wide receiver Keon Coleman with
the thirty third pick in the draft this year, and
after the losses of Stefan Diggs and Gave Davis' offseason,
Buffalo desperately needed another offensive weapon, and Josh Allen said
he thinks Coleman is a perfect fit.
Speaker 12 (31:04):
I think that, you know, his his play style, what
we needed in our offense, and talking with our offensive coordinator,
our quarterback coach Brandon b and auvisty coach McDermott.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
A guy that's a big body guy and a guy.
Speaker 8 (31:18):
That can go went on back shoulder fade and not
afraid to be a physical wide receiver, and then again,
I think you pair him with some of the guys
that we have in our room right now, we're going
to have a pretty pretty solid group that works together.
Speaker 6 (31:33):
If you're watching the tape that we were showing right now,
he is a big, physical guy that's not afraid to
run through anybody, which, as you just heard Josh Allen say,
that fits their style of play very well. But they
did lose their top two wide receivers. You know, Stefan
Diggs put up almost twelve hundred receiving yards last season.
(31:55):
So the question is, like, obviously there's going to be
growing pains anytime. As we were talking about Kayleb Williams,
you're moving from the college game to the NFL.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
Is this too much pressure to put on a rookie receiver.
Speaker 6 (32:09):
Is he that missing piece that can get Josh Allen
over that Patrick Mahomes hump in the playoffs?
Speaker 3 (32:17):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (32:18):
We've seen some of these receivers come from college and
they're ready. They're ready to jump in and put up
big numbers. To the people who are concerned that Coleman,
how's he going to handle cold weather? Buffalo played at FSU.
He's from Louisiana. Ah, but this kid went to Michigan
State Start, so he knows cold Michigan cold. I think
he's going to be fine. He's been amazing in interviews.
Speaker 3 (32:38):
I don't know how many.
Speaker 6 (32:39):
People, Oh my gosh, his personality has been out of
this world. The cookie thing when he was at the presser,
I think talking about golf like he just has been.
Speaker 3 (32:49):
If that is.
Speaker 6 (32:50):
A reflection of what he's going to be like in
the locker room, he is going to be as we
were talking about earlier.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
It's and easy.
Speaker 6 (32:56):
There's always like that kind of guy that you gravitate
towards and even just watching them on these like pressers
and TV and social media clips, I want to hang out.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
With the guy. So I'm sure his teammates are going
to want to do the same thing.
Speaker 4 (33:08):
A breath of fresh air from Stefan Diggs, who white
the opposite quite thee. But Diggs, I mean, first, he
ended badly in Minnesota. Yeah, it's badly. A buffalo like
fool me once, shame on you, joo me twice, shame
on me.
Speaker 3 (33:25):
I think that's gonna be what it is. What maybe
you know what I'm saying. Yeah, I'm hopefully works out.
Alex with the news.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by The
Herd Line news all right.
Speaker 4 (33:38):
This week, Luka Doncic was compared to an all time
NBA great.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
Oh boy, I'll tell you why. We're close. He's close.
We're almost there. Back on the Herd shortly.
Speaker 2 (33:49):

the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get

Speaker 3 (34:37):
Yeah, back here on the Herd.
Speaker 4 (34:39):
Jason McIntyre in for Colin Coward. Listen, guys, you know
longtime listeners are the show of my podcast of me
on social media. You know I'm all in on Lukadancic.
I've been there for a while. Okay, the Luka Doncic
hot takes in the surrounding media space right now are
going a little overboard now. I am prone, as alex
(35:02):
Is is calling everybody, we're prone to hyperbole. And so
Ryan Hollins was on the show yesterday and there was
no camera on me when he was speaking, but if
you had seen it, I nearly fell out of my
chair because here's what Ryan Hollins had to say about
Luka Doncic.
Speaker 5 (35:19):
I don't know how the kid wasn't the first pick
in the NBA draft. And the thing about Luca is
that he does beat you in a ray of different places,
and even worse, he does it in slow motion.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
He does it with a bad need.
Speaker 5 (35:32):
A young bull's gonna be on the injury report every
single night. You don't realize how big he is so
he's a mix of Larry Bird and James Harden. He
takes his time, he's a slow motion, he's big, he's
gonna trash talk with you. And when he's rolling, man,
he's seemingly literally unstoppable.
Speaker 4 (35:52):
Okay, he's already got a better step back than Harden,
and Harden owned the step back in the league for
a while.
Speaker 3 (35:59):
I can't the Larry.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
Bird One's tough because I grew up watching NBA in
the eighties. I was a Magic Johnson fan. I didn't
like Larry Bird. I went through the spiel yesterday like
I don't like Boston teams. I respected Bird, but like,
what's not to I'm sure you guys have seen the
clip on Instagram where Larry Bird someone does like an
audio and Larry Bird was playing like Portland, and then
he had a back to back with the Lakers. So
(36:22):
against Portland he took like every shot with his left
hand and scored like thirty nine points or whatever. He
went off and then he's like afterwards, they're like, why
are you shooting lefty? He's like, I had to save
my right hand for the Lakers tomorrow night. Like that's
amazing stuff, Like that's you, Luca's not doing that, and
I'm a Luca guy. But to a point on Hollands,
He's like, I don't know how Luca wasn't the first pick.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Do you guys remember the twenty eighteen draft.
Speaker 4 (36:45):
This was still it was not a fully European league yet,
right with Giannis and Yo Kisch. By the way, all
NBA came out, four of the top five guys are
not American in all NBA. Okay, this is where we're headed.
We're there, it's your league. But in the twenty eighteen draft,
DeAndre Ayton, who is from the Bahamas but played collegiately
(37:05):
at Arizona. He was the number one pick Phoenix. The
best story I heard, and I know I referenced my
men's leagues and basketball and stuff.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
Well, the gym I go to is the old Clippers facility.
Speaker 4 (37:15):
So there's a ton of former NBA people, current NBA
people hanging out, and of course they see me on
TV blabbing. They're like, who's this guy? So then I
start becoming friends with them and they start telling me stuff.
The best story I heard about the twenty eighteen draft,
so the GM James Jones, who was at the time
in Phoenix, goes to the I think it was a
European Championships to watch Luca play, and comes back and
(37:36):
gets his report to the Sun's brass. That was basically like, Eh,
I don't know who's he gonna guard when he comes here.
Speaker 3 (37:41):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (37:41):
I'm not that impressed. Like that, I'm not that impressed.
Was basically the gist of it. They take DeAndre Aiden
and Luca, you know, the rest is history. Anyways, side note,
the guy who went after Aighton was Marvin Bagley, who
was awesome at Duke, but he's another big guy.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
Bounce around the league.
Speaker 4 (37:58):
Luca obviously way better, so it doesn't stop there the
Luca comparisons. Chandler Parsons, who I think has been on
this show, had a great nickname when he played in
the league, Chansome Parsons, because he's like a handsome guy Chancellor.
Chandler Parsons dated a bunch of quasi famous people. Anyways,
Chandler Parsons was on the show this week and actually,
uh double down on the Luca don Chet Larry Bird stuff.
Speaker 9 (38:21):
As a basketball player, Luka Donkins can do everything Larry
Bird did and more.
Speaker 7 (38:25):
And there's a viral moment.
Speaker 12 (38:28):
If you understand the old guys are gonna miss sit
next to him again.
Speaker 3 (38:32):
Oh, it's a different game.
Speaker 7 (38:33):
It's too physical.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
Luca can never play back.
Speaker 7 (38:35):
Then it's like it doesn't he doesn't have to.
Speaker 2 (38:37):
He plays now and he's better than he was back,
Like he's just better.
Speaker 4 (38:43):
Listen, I try to be level headed in some of
this stuff. I don't know that he's better than a
guy who won the MVP three straight years. Okay, that
being said, here's what's fascinating about Luca. He's only twenty
what is he twenty five now? But in his first
he accomplished more in his first four years in the
league than Larry Bird did because Bird came into the
(39:04):
league later, just as many players did.
Speaker 3 (39:06):
Michael Jordan came into the league later.
Speaker 4 (39:09):
And that's why when you look at the tracking numbers,
Luca is ahead of all time greats like Jordan and Bird.
Speaker 3 (39:14):
When it comes to MVPs and boints per game and.
Speaker 4 (39:17):
Blah blah blah. Like Luca's already accomplished it. I'm just
gonna go through it real quick.
Speaker 3 (39:21):
So he's the rookie of the Year obviously at nineteen.
Speaker 4 (39:24):
His second year at age twenty, he was fourth in
MVP voting. In his second year in the league. Larry
Bird was still in college. He was still riding a
lawnmower in the offseason. Luka Doncic at twenty was fourth
in the MVP voting. At twenty one, he was sixth.
At twenty two, he was fifth, then he was eighth.
This year he was third. Five straight years, Luka Doncic
(39:46):
has finished top ten in the MVP. And I know
the old heads are gonna be like, he can't touch
Larry Bird. I've referenced tribe a lot with Aaron Rodgers
here in the last two days. You guys know how
it is. People are wedded to their era. And you know,
Alex is a music person.
Speaker 3 (40:04):
She knows this.
Speaker 4 (40:05):
Whatever music you were listening to growing up, you have
an affinity for it is the best. I grew up
eighties music. I love eighties Okay, I'm too embarrassed to
post my workout mix, but a lot of it. When
I go to the gym and I'm throwing the plates around,
it's a lot of eighties stuff. It gets me pumped up.
And I mean a lot of like rap. You know, obviously,
(40:26):
Sorry Team Drake.
Speaker 3 (40:28):
But like I like eighties music.
Speaker 4 (40:29):
So a lot of people who started to watch basketball
in the eighties, who were young kids, are influenced by
the eighties, and they say, oh, no way, anybody's better
than Magic, better than Larry Bird?
Speaker 3 (40:39):
Are you kidding me?
Speaker 4 (40:40):
Better than jor to get that hell outie. Those people
basketball influence them. I watched eighties NBA, I watched nineties.
I'm not saying I'm like smart enough, but it's very
obvious that the players today are vastly superior than they
were back in the day. Folks, we don't do this
(41:01):
in the in the NFL, we don't do this with airplanes, we.
Speaker 3 (41:05):
Don't do this with technicolo.
Speaker 4 (41:06):
Just about everything is better now than it was for medicine,
technical advancements, workout, training, regiment, diet, everything, it's simply improved
then it as opposed to twenty thirty years ago. So
it's not that hot of a take to say, yeah,
Luca's on track to be.
Speaker 3 (41:28):
Better than Bird now.
Speaker 4 (41:28):
I can't say he's better than him, and Alex, I
know you would even blush it like you can't.
Speaker 3 (41:34):
It's tough for me to say better than Larry Bird,
but not yet.
Speaker 6 (41:38):

like comparing to like a Magic Johnson Kobe, Like these
are guys that are like forever going to be some
of the greats that brought the game to where it is,
and it's what it's what we do. You compare right

Speaker 3 (42:29):
Luca could do those passes.
Speaker 4 (42:32):

came along and I was like, I got to ride
with g So you love thirty.
Speaker 3 (42:39):
We have the same last name, so oh obviously yes,
