Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Well, I've been waiting for this for a while. I
told our guys when Dan Lanning's available, I said, let's
get him on the show. I covered Oregon for years.
I have great friends in the Pacific Northwest, and I
just love his story. Southern guy Mary, do you know
his wife for a decade and a half, young kids, decides,
you know what, we're gonna roll the dice. We're gonna
go cross country to Oregon. And immediately he felt like

(00:48):
an Oregon guy and big energy, young guy Oregon plays
with a little bit of an edge, and so we're
lucky to have him here. Well, first of all, it's
great to have you, and I have a lot of
respect for the program and what you guys have built.
I want to start with this. You're twelve and two.
Last year when you lost, you lost to a good team,

(01:10):
a hell of a coach and a good team. I
do think, and I've said this, I think Ohio State
and you are equipped to really control this conference for
the next several years going forward. You have quarterback play,
you got the coach, you got the infrastructure. But the
Big Ten, Dan, it is different. You play in some rain,

(01:30):
it gets cold, it's physical, it's two tight ends. I mean,
are you looking at the film thinking we've got to
tweak some stuff here?

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Yeah, I think you gotta do that every year. And
you know, people have asked me about the move of
the Big Ten. Ultimately, in my opinion, you know, winning
football is winning football, and it starts in the trenches
and that's you know, you have to be big upfront.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
You have to be able to win on the line
of scrimmage.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
I don't think that formula changes, But like what we're
doing right now in the office is truly studying some
of those opponents that we're going to be seeing next year,
and you want to start to incorporate what are the
things that you might have to do that are different
for those opponents, and not install those the week of
the game, right and you want to start to prepare
for those in fall camp. So there might be a
package here too that we have to carry that's a
little bit different for some of the teams we'll face.

(02:13):
But ultimately, what's going to win games is us playing
our best ball, and that formula hasn't changed regardless of
what conference you're in or who you're playing.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
You know, I tell people, I've been lucky enough to
be to a lot of these college stadiums, and I'm
like you, people don't understand what Austin stadiums like. I'm
like you, guys in the South, you don't have any
idea how loud You're like, well, I doesn't have one
hundred thousand people. Were you even a little surprised your
first home game at Eugene because it's not one hundred

(02:43):
and ten thousand. Did you look around and think this
is a this is a vibe, this thing is magic.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
Well you hear it, you know, you hear it for
a whole offseason of how special this place is. And
you're kind of sitting there saying, hey, I've been in
some you know, some great environments. Come on, and then
it lived up to every exp you know, shout in
the third quarter, you know how passionate our fans are,
how involved they get and uh, it's it's tough to
hear in that place. Oh yeah, when they get rocking,
it makes it special.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
For sure.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
You have the best problem a coach could have. You
have two really good quarterbacks. So you get the kid
Dylan Gabriel who can sling it from Oklahoma, and then
you have this kid, I think he's from Michigan. He
went to UCLA, Dante Moore, who I watched. He just
needs reps. He's young, but he's a really good player.
How do you balance it? I mean these are these
are five star kids, you know, quarterbacks. They want to play.

(03:32):
How do you balance that equation?

Speaker 4 (03:35):
Yeah? More important than what they are as players.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
These guys are unbelievable humans and they want to be
where they're gonna they're going to develop, But they're great teammates.
You got to see these guys in the locker room
interact with their teammates, and that's what I think we have.
And you know, in that entire quarterback room, you also
got a young guy and off in Austin Novasad that
had an unbelievable spring. But you know, Dante can make
every throw known to man, Dylan has unbelievable experience. So

(03:57):
I'm really excited about our quarterback room. And you just
step out there on the field every day and say
how can we get better? Because you never know which
one you're gonna need, who you're gonna call on.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
On game day. But having that talent in that.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Room, but more more importantly having those kind of players
with their personalities, you know, growth mindset, team guys.

Speaker 4 (04:15):
I think that really fits our culture.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
I love bo Nicks. I watched you play live twice.
I was at the Utah game. I was up in Seattle.
He just doesn't make any mistakes right like he may not.
I mean he can move, he's mobile, but he stays
within the play in the structure. What will you miss?
What is Bo Nicks that I don't see? What is
something that you're like? Man that because I saw him

(04:40):
lay at Auburn, I saw him at Oregon. He he's
a special kid. Like, what is there something that you're
a little worried you miss a little bit with him?

Speaker 3 (04:49):
Well, I'm want to miss the person. You know, he's
a special individual. He's as good of a person as
I've ever met. And you know his wife is he's unbelievable.
I mean he was. He came here with a different
level of maturity, already married. Yeah, I felt like we
had another coach. We had another coach in the building.
And what separates Bo is how much time he puts
in to work. He watches more film than coaches.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
He you know, he is.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
There's no one that's gonna step on the field more
prepared than Bo. And then the way he practices every day,
the level of intensity, you know, his commitment to being great.

Speaker 4 (05:20):
It really, you know, kind of spread throughout our program.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Yeah, we brought him here on the show for thirty
minutes and he just was perfect. I mean, it was
just outstanding. So, you know, a lot of people, I
don't know, they complained about stuff. And I've always kind
of felt like the world's changing. If you don't change
with it, you're in trouble, right. I don't love everything
about the transfer Portal. I don't love everything about NIL.

(05:47):
You guys are lucky. You're one of five or six
programs Ohio State, Georgia, Texas. You've got some good funds there.
But do you worry a little? I don't want to
be old old guy. But the one thing I do
worry about a little with an il is that in
life you got to fight through stuff and you're not
always gonna get You're not gonna get the starting job.

(06:08):
I mean in Oregon, Georgia, Texas, you're competing against five
star dude, same position. Do you worry a little bit
about Culturally, some guys are like, I'll go to Louisville.
You know, I'm gonna go play somewhere. I'll go to Toledo.
I want to get I want to get paid. Do
you worry about that.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
I'll spend a lot of time on it.

Speaker 5 (06:27):
You know.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
The one thing I do talk a lot about and
recruiting is, you know, one of the reasons I feel
like I'm where I'm at is because I had a
chip on my shoulder and now you know, guys are
coming in and they're taking care of and do they
still have that chip, that hunger, that desire to be great?
And those are the guys you want to recruit. But
I think at the end of the day, what it
really does is it reveals what your program is.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
And if you have a program that's.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
That's making guys better every day, that they enjoy being
a part of that does does a good job of
taking care of their players. You're gonna be able to
retain great players and develop great players. You're also going
to be a place that people want to come to
and players talk, right, they know what it's like in
the locker room. They know what it's like to be
a part of the team. And we're lucky here to
have a great culture that our players really embrace, and

(07:08):
those things that can be negatives around in Ile, they
really don't creep into our place.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
Yeah, so you know, it's so interesting. So I grew up,
believe it or not, you may hang up on me.
I grew up a Husky fan. I grew up equidistant
and the Huskies were on local races.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
It was great talking to you.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
But I covered Oregon and and I have friends on
both sides, and I've said one of the things I
always loved about Oregon they didn't have this Don James history,
in this rich history like Oregon was like, hey, we're
going to switch uniforms. Everybody's like cool new stuff. You know,
you you were in the South. George's got a proud history.
You go to the herschel Walker, Alabama's got a history.

(07:49):
Oklahoma Oregon's able to do something that's pretty cool. Their
history now is good, but it's a very flexible program,
like willing to do new stuff. Tell me a little
about that, because you want. You came to a program
that had won a lot of games, but they're not
like Penn State, like they can do what they want

(08:10):
with the uniforms. Has that been an advantage for you?

Speaker 4 (08:15):
Yeah, I certainly think.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
You know, when I think of Oregon and before I
ever took this job, you know, outside looking in, you
see a place that's innovative. And that's really kind of
been the mantra of this program, you know, especially for
the last twenty five years, of how can we be
on the cutting edge?

Speaker 4 (08:28):
How can we do what other people don't do better?
How can we be different?

Speaker 3 (08:31):
And you know, I think we continue to find ways
to be different in our approach and maybe not just
always go back to well, this is the way it's
always been done. And that's allowed organ to be really
really successful. To think ahead, not really think behind, and
to try to be the team making the next step,
not the team that's reacting. Be proactive and not reactive.
And that's what I love about our program and really

(08:52):
the alignment from our administration, you know, all the way
across the university.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
We see that here.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Kirby Smart Nick Saban, Nick's the best coach in college
football history. If I said to you, what is the gem?
What is the one thing that because ultimately Dan, twenty
years from now, people are going to take stuff from you.
They're going to say, you know, Dan taught me this.
What is the thing about Nick that you didn't know
going in? And you marvel at leaving?

Speaker 3 (09:21):
I've always thought getting there and being around coach for
a year, you realize this guy's a robot. The definition
of consistency. You know, the sun's coming up in Tuscalose
tomorrow and he's going to have a staff meet at
seven thirty am.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
And it was just the consistent.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
Approach that he's going to eat the same thing for lunch,
he's gonna eat the same thing for breakfast. But within
that the ability to learn from others and always seeking
an edge, you know, and I think Kirby's elite at
that as well, like how can we do this better?

Speaker 4 (09:48):
Where can we grow? And I think both those guys,
you know, you.

Speaker 3 (09:51):
See a level of consistency operation when it comes to
recruiting when it comes to development of the players, and
that's certainly something I took away from.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
Nick Man looking at your schedule that Ohio State game,
as Holy Molly, that's going to be How do you
not look ahead of that puppy that's jumping off that.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Yeah, you got Idaho first, right, you got Idaho first.
That's why start with that one. But you know, that's
what's exciting about this league. You look at the teams
that we're going.

Speaker 4 (10:19):
To get to play.

Speaker 3 (10:21):
You get to play the best of the best, right
and I think there's two conferences in college football right
now that you want to be a part of.

Speaker 4 (10:25):
The really fortunate to be a part of them.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
And we get to be a team that can come
in here and compete, you know, in this conference, but
we're going to do it against some great teams. So
certainly there's some premiere games on that schedule that we're
excited about, and that's definitely one of them.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
By the way, you got three boys perfect years. Do
they get to see I mean you guys now recruiting,
I've said this about the NC double A. If you
want to retain the best coaches, they got to have
a life. They got to see their wife and kids.
You got three boy boys need dad. Is it hard
with all the recruiting? Now, how do you balance the
family thing and the coaching thing?

Speaker 3 (10:58):
You know, somebody asked me to so today I don't
think there is balance. There isn't a balance if you
want to be great, just like with your job, if
you want to be great, it takes time. But what
you can do is you can be intentional. Right, So
when I do have time with our boys, you know,
it's intentional. We make sure that we have a it
mapped out. I've never been as detailed with my summer
plan as I am right now. Like at eight o'clock
on this day in July, I'm going to be, you know,

(11:20):
with those boys and trying to figure out where it fits.
Because there isn't a balance. They've sacrificed. You know, My
kids have lived in eight different states. They've all been
all over the place when it comes to you know, recruiting,
and there's times of the year that don't see me.
And that's when you know, my head coach at home, Sophia,
she's in charge. So it's kind of a disruption when
I come home in July and they're like, wait, that's
not how we do things. But I've learned to be

(11:44):
really intentional with the time that I do have. That's
that's the part that's mattered.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
What a pleasure, Dan, great seeing you. Love to have
you on again. Good luck and keep crushing that. You're
just doing a great job there.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
Thank you, Colin, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
Thanks for having me on you bet Dan Lanning Oregon
football coach. That is funn that's how it works too.
You get home and mom's like, yeah, we don't do
it that way. Here's the schedule. Nick Saban found that
out when he retired. It was like, honey, here's your
here's the honeydew list. I'll take care of things. Can't
just walk out. You're not the coach anymore. White mom
says practice time. You do it with what she wants

(12:18):
the way it should be. I hope you understand that
is a young married guy with the kids.

Speaker 6 (12:22):
Unfortunately I do understand that.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
Yes, yeah, I mean unfortunately she sit in practice time.
By the way you get home could be two days.
You gotta do a little more work.

Speaker 5 (12:31):
Make sure you two a days, not at the gym
or hoops. No playoff start this week.

Speaker 6 (12:36):
I know you care deeply.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
Yeah you and uh, there's got four guys on the
team who you never passed to.

Speaker 2 (12:43):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon Eastern not a im Pacific.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
Uh, j maak with the news.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
Turn on the news. This is the Herd line News.

Speaker 5 (12:58):
Arizona Cardinals drafted Marvin Harrison. JO can't wait fourth overall pick.
I know you're fired out.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
Oh, I can't wait to watch him.

Speaker 5 (13:05):
He's one of the favorites to win Offensive Rookie of
the Year and Kyler Murray probably has the best receiver
he's had since they lost d Hop.

Speaker 6 (13:11):
Here's Kyler on his new number one receiver.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
He's been good at football his whole life.

Speaker 7 (13:17):
He's been obviously grown by one of the best, his pops,
obviously the Hall of Famer, and there's you know, there's
not much to think about. Dude like he can.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
He plays the game at a high level.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
Obviously it's a new level for him.

Speaker 7 (13:30):
But I have no doubt that he'll go do his
thing this year and when you know, whatever he wants to.
I think he's gonna be that type of guy.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
I know how much he loves the game obviously, just.

Speaker 7 (13:40):
Sitting there talking to him, his energy and just what
he's gonna mean to the team. I think, you know,
I think everybody should be excited about.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Have you noticed he's bulked up and how much more
verbal he is now this is his franchise. He's talking, elaborating.
I noticed it when we talked at the UFC fight,
when he came up to be and wanted to discuss
some situational football. He's he's put on. His traps are bigger.
It's interesting. He's got a wool hat on.

Speaker 6 (14:08):
I love it. It's on forward to Phoenix. Is that
what it is right now?

Speaker 1 (14:12):
No, it looks good.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
I like it.

Speaker 1 (14:14):
I've thought about that. I like those.

Speaker 6 (14:17):
The affinity you have for Kyler Murray is just this.
I used to be a big fan.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
I think he's so talented. He likes to play video talented,
no doubt about you, guys. Listen, I'm not a video
game guy.

Speaker 6 (14:27):
You're not a gamer.

Speaker 1 (14:29):
But if you if that's how you burn some energy,
I mean, you're working out all day, it's hot outside.
What are you gonna do? What are you gonna do
in Phoenix for four months a year when it's one
hundred and sixty four degrees out, go inside, play a gamer,
turn on the AC I got no problem with it.

Speaker 5 (14:44):
I'm just glad you guys have a little brewing romance,
you know, you.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
And you and Kyle. I think it's a mutual respect.

Speaker 6 (14:49):
We get them on the show when they're like two.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
Put money of your days off. I'd love that the money.

Speaker 6 (14:56):
All right, let's get to somebody you don't love.

Speaker 7 (14:59):
I don't know if any it does.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
We'll love us.

Speaker 6 (15:01):
Entry year two is the Titans started.

Speaker 5 (15:02):
QB took over midseason last year, dealt with a lot
of ups and downs.

Speaker 6 (15:06):
He had some injuries, got banged up.

Speaker 5 (15:10):
New wide receiver Tyler Boyd believes that the team's new
offensive weapons will help will Levis blossom.

Speaker 8 (15:17):
I know they could take hits, and he's an athlete,
you know, he kind of tall. But again, man, I
know he can go out there and play football. And
another thing, I know he kind of probably went out
there and did too much. But now he got he
got a playmaker, he got a guy, So I think
he can cut it back a little bit, relaxed and
just rely more on his playmakers.

Speaker 5 (15:34):
You know.

Speaker 8 (15:34):
But at the end of the day, he's still learning
the offense as well, you know, so he's still trying
to get the timing with certain rounds and and just
knowing what side to stay with and what not to
stay with.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
And you know what, I'm gonna make an observation here,
and I may be completely wrong, and if somebody's inside
the Titans organization, you can like get a hold of me.
He got rid of that. It looks like he's gotten
rid of that little quirky hitch in his swing. He
does this thing where he has a little bit of
a hitch. I don't like it at all. It looks

(16:06):
like he's gotten rid of it. Wow, I don't now,
that's just an observation on it. Twenty seconds. Watch now,
he'll do the hitch here, but it's pre watch right,
watch hair. I don't like that hitch that he did
that in college too much.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (16:21):
I think he's probably trying to freeze the linebackers.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
I don't like that hitch. It looks like he's alleviated
that from his throw. He's just letting it go. You
can't that that little half hitch that's what got Sam
Darnold in trouble. It's like that half second stuff. You
got to get it out. Aaron Rodgers is one of
the best ever. He just slings it. I mean it,
just bang it out of his hand.

Speaker 6 (16:41):
You're like a quarterback whisper. Oh that's what many So
I just went to Will Levis's instagram.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
Watch this. Hold on seeing right there? I hate that?
What does he doing that for? He has a big
enough army, doesn't need to do that pitch. Yeah, I
don't like that. Yeah, let's see it again. Now he
doesn't do it. There, he just lessen so, No, he's
not doing any staff See there he does it again.
The staff is saying it's a pump fake. Stop for
the pump fakes. Corners can't see anything.

Speaker 5 (17:07):
Every linebackers look anyways, he's not doing bathroom selfies anymore.
He's cleaned up his social media act.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
Has he hat forwards?

Speaker 2 (17:15):
I mean, are you gonna come around on?

Speaker 1 (17:17):
I'm old, forgive and forget. I move off. There's gms
I didn't like. I like them.

Speaker 5 (17:22):
You want to buy some Will Levis stock. I just
want to watch it. Penny Stoppin right now.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
I don't know I've got a I think I've got
a keen eye for mechanics.

Speaker 6 (17:32):
Who's a starter in three years, Will Levis or Kyler Murray?
Just anywhere?

Speaker 1 (17:36):
Kyler Murray, Come on, give me a tough one. Come on,
give me, give me a go either way. One now, Now,
Will Levis does have better receivers and an offensive coach,
and I think that stuff.

Speaker 6 (17:47):
Anthony Richardson or Kyler Murray who's starting?

Speaker 1 (17:50):
They're both starting. You're sure of this. Anthony Richardson and
Kyler Murray are both starting in the NFL. Give me
give me some hard questions. This is layup stuff that Yeah,
I'm totally one hundred percent certain. Give me give me
a hard one, Will Levis or who else?

Speaker 5 (18:06):
All right, here's a challenging one, Will Levis or Drake Bay.

Speaker 1 (18:12):
Let me sleep on that one.

Speaker 6 (18:13):
Ask for challenging.

Speaker 1 (18:14):
Well, Drake May had a defensive coach and no weapons.
Will Levis has some nice weapons. I think, an easier division,
and he's got an offensive coach.

Speaker 5 (18:24):
Contention by stock in one of these two quarterbacks right now,
Will Levis or JJ McCarthy.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
Well, JJ McCarthy has unbelievable weapons and offensive coach, a
really good offensive coach. I think Will Levis has a
better arm. I would probably say JJ McCarthy. He's not
prone to the mistakes of.

Speaker 6 (18:43):
Will, Will Levis or bow Knicks.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
Who are you buying bo Nicks? He doesn't make the mistakes.

Speaker 6 (18:47):
That was unequivalent.

Speaker 1 (18:48):
Doesn't have the arm, but doesn't make the mistakes.

Speaker 7 (18:50):
Wow, all right.

Speaker 5 (18:50):
Final story is Jim Harbaugh left Michigan after last season's Natty.
OC Sharon Moore was quickly promoted to the team's new
head coach. Speaking on the Joel Klatt Show, More revealed
he had never thought about being the head coach until
a conversation with Harball to start last season.

Speaker 9 (19:09):
It entered my mind when Coach Harball told me, like,
you're going to be the next head coach of Michigan.

Speaker 1 (19:13):
When did me tell you that?

Speaker 4 (19:14):
This year?

Speaker 9 (19:15):
He told me that. He said, I don't know when,
I don't know what's going to happen. Dun No man
can say the future, tell the future and I'll give
you give me Well.

Speaker 4 (19:24):
Like that's how he is. He's like that all the time.

Speaker 9 (19:26):
And he just said, you're going to be the next
head coach of Michigan, and I was just like what
He's just like, I'm going to put it in my
contract that you know, I ever leave or go somewhere
that you're the next head coach of Michigan. He told
me that, like at the beginning.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
Of the year.

Speaker 5 (19:41):
Hmmm, I don't know you could do that, Harball could
tell Michigan if I leave the next coach of Sharon
mood that's kind of cool.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
Well, I don't think he could tell them.

Speaker 5 (19:51):
He just said he put in his contract.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
Well, some coaches, legendary coaches do that, Harball, And generally
you hire the hop assistant when the legend leaves. It
doesn't work that much, but that's what you do. My
staff's still on this whole. Will Levis, that was a
pump fake. Well, you know what, it was a dumb
pump fake. Get rid of it. But you know what,
you know what, Brady didn't do a lot of pump fake.

Speaker 6 (20:15):
Oh stop it. Brady was a king of pump fakes.

Speaker 1 (20:19):
Brady was the king of winning big games. Thanks and
being there for Mini Camp.

Speaker 6 (20:24):
Oh is that a shot at aar Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 1 (20:27):
Shot you'd landed wherever you think it should land?

Speaker 4 (20:29):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (20:30):
Cowhard Jmack with the news.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
herd Line News.

Speaker 1 (20:39):
Uh for hot water that never runs out. Go tankless

fifteen year warranty and save in your water bill.

Speaker 2 (20:48):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in noon Easter nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 10 (20:57):
Hey, we're Cavino and Rich Fox Sports Radio every day
five to seven pm Eastern.

Speaker 1 (21:02):
But here's the thing.

Speaker 10 (21:03):
We never have enough time to get to everything we
want to get to.

Speaker 11 (21:06):
And that's why we have a brand new podcast called
over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun in
our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly,
because this guy is over promising things we never have
time for.

Speaker 2 (21:19):
Yeah, you blubber list in me.

Speaker 10 (21:20):
Well, you know what it's called over promise. You should
be good at it because you've been over promising women
for years.

Speaker 11 (21:24):
Well, it's a Covino and Rich after show, and we
want you to be a part of it. We're gonna
be talking sports, of course, but we're also gonna talk
life and relationships. And if Rich and I are arguing
about something or we didn't have enough time, it will
continue on our after show.

Speaker 1 (21:37):
Called over Promised.

Speaker 10 (21:38):
Well, if you don't get enough Covino and Rich, make
sure you check out over Promised and also uncensored, by
the way, so maybe we'll go at it even a
little harder. It's gonna be the best after show podcast
of all time.

Speaker 11 (21:49):
There you go, over promising, and remember you could see
on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen over Promised with
Cavino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or
wherever you get your podcast.

Speaker 1 (22:00):
This show's moved today Dan Lanning Nick Wright showed up
and it was sort of a throwaway question. I had
it on the list. So when I bring Nick on,
I'll have like five or six questions, maybe four or five,
and then maybe i'll scribble something. So I scribbled, you know,
just a little. Maybe I'll ask him about Aaron Rodgers,
who lectured the team on no more non football stuff,

(22:23):
and yet he's not at mini camp today, meaning he
made a choice to put something over football. Now, it
could be a charity. There's nothing wrong with that, but
you would, you know, generally, Yet That's why I always
say you gotta be careful about lecturing, you know, especially
on morals and structures. Everybody's a little morally flexible, everybody's

(22:45):
a hypocrite. Here was Nick right earlier on Aaron Rodgers
being a no show at mini camp.

Speaker 12 (22:53):
There were two events being held on June eleventh, both
of which Aaron Rodgers felt that need to attend, and
he chose this other one over the Jets mandatory mini camp.
And to do that two weeks after you talked about
how you wouldn't be playing if you didn't think you

(23:14):
could win the Super Bowl and be League MVP, and
three months after you lectured the whole organization for not
having its priorities right for all of it. It's just
so disingenuous. It is just so wildly disingenuous. And do
as I say, not as I do.

Speaker 1 (23:32):
I don't think he's wrong on that. Again, I know
anytime I discuss Aaron Rodgers, I'm seen as very negative.
But it did jump out to me. It's like, come on, bro,
And I would say, if I said to you, name
a quarterback in this league who over the last couple

(23:56):
of years has made a lot of news for non
football stuff, wouldn't Aaron be a runaway number one? Like
that's his brand now? Like whether you agree with his
vaccine stance. I don't care or his darkness, retreat whatever,
to each their own. But if I had to say,

(24:17):
there's a quarterback, if it was a Jeopardy question, quarterback
who makes more news off the field than on it
over the last two years, it would be Aaron. So
be careful about lecturing everybody on the non football stuff.
I also asked, think this is something that I think
is interesting I had said earlier today, is that I

(24:41):
would watch I watch much more World Cup than I
watch Olympics. I used to be much more into the
Olympics twenty years ago than I was the World Cup.
But one thing happened twenty five years ago, and I
would say over the last three to four World Cups
in Thelympics, I don't watch a lot of Olympic stuff.

(25:01):
I'll watch the men's basketball team. That's maybe a track
and field event. But and I like skiing, but I
don't watch a lot of it. But what happened is
it used to be twenty five thirty years ago, if
you were a sports fan, not every game was on TV.
So the Olympics for me, as I was growing up
twenties thirties, you got sports every night on TV for

(25:22):
eight hours. It was like really special. I grew up
in a household, you know, I'm most of my young life,
you know, like the Olympics was the time that mom
would watch sports, and then all of a sudden, cable
TV every league is on. Now you got streaming. I
can watch anything anytime. Having something on TV for eight

(25:43):
to ten hours a day, that sports just didn't feel
as special. And the truth is, I don't watch luge
during the Olympics or out of it, whereas I watch
some soccer outside of the Olympics and during the World Cup,
so I'm more of a World Cup. People always say, well,
Fox has the World Cup. I worked at the other
place they didn't have it. I started talking soccer, like
I like watching World Cup soccer. So I'm not going

(26:06):
to watch a ton of the Olympic women's basketball with
Caitlin Clark, but I would have watched some. There's no
question I would have watched some. And I think what
it would have done is elevate women's basketball in the
WNBA and introduce me and others to players that we

(26:27):
don't necessarily follow. And I think that's a good thing.
I don't think it her not being on the team
crushes the WNBA. But I do think it's a little
icing on women's basketball, the cake having her in the Olympics.
By the way, they don't lose games in the Olympics,
they win gold. They blow a lot of teams out.
She would get on the floor. Nick Wright talked about

(26:47):
Caitlin being left off the women's US Olympic team.

Speaker 12 (26:51):
Where I am not as worked up as seemingly everyone
else is. I actually don't think it was going to
I don't I think the eyeballs drawn was going to
be so much different with or without Caitlin Clark on
the roster, because even if she were on the roster,
she would not be playing a ton And where I

(27:12):
do think there is some pushback from people who have
been long standing fans or members of the WNBA is
is are people more interested in the WNBA right now
than they were or are they exclusively and solely interested
in Kitlin Clark.

Speaker 1 (27:32):
You know, it's interesting both Christian Laitner and Anthony Davis
made an Olympic team and we'd never seen them play
a pro game, So the men have been much more
willing to do this. She's actually played WNBA games. You know,
she had thirty points a couple of games ago. So
the men's have like given these young rising stars an opportunity.

(27:54):
I mean, the dream team was stacked and they put
later on it, and so the men have been more
willing to do this, you know, I I you know,
I think it's from just a business perspective, I think
it's an opportunity wasted. From a basketball perspective, there's obviously
arguments that she's not worthy. But Diana Trasu, who's a

(28:17):
really good player years old, Yeah, she's she's not really
a top twelve player. Ever, so you gotta be careful
about the rigidity of your argument she's not good enough. Well,
if you look at the twelve person roster, there's somebody
on that team that's not a top twelve player.

Speaker 5 (28:29):
She's like grandfathered in because she's this is going to
be her sixth Olympics.

Speaker 6 (28:32):
Now, the reality is, look at the men's team.

Speaker 5 (28:34):
Drew Holliday is not one of the top twelve players
in the NBA, probably not top fifteen. He should he
be on the team over Jalen Brunson. Jaylen Brunson was
amazing this year, or Jalen Brown Jalen Brown Trip could
be on the team like Kyri on the team. It's
about fit and you know you're telling me Caitlin Clark
isn't gonna space the floor for your bigs with her
three point shooting ability. Like all they got girls who

(28:55):
can shoot the three. Clark is shooting Steph Curry level
threes thirty footers. Keeping her off the team is just
it's just comical, almost embarrassing.

Speaker 1 (29:03):
Well, it's an opportunity wasted. For the record. Many star
current and former women's athletes have pushed back and said,
this is what are you guys doing, Like, obviously do it.
I just think what happens all the time is you know,
the NFL is a great example of this, is that
you look at opportunities. When they put a game on
Peacock NBC streaming vehicle, who did they put on the game?

(29:30):
Patrick Mahomes. They figured out a way to get Patrick
because it's for the industry, it's for the growth of
the league. Oh, the Christmas games, what's the streaming giant Netflix?
They went, hey, we love you networks, but we're given
Netflix Wednesday Christmas games. Is it the best thing currently
for the league? No, it'll get fewer eyeballs than foxwould,

(29:53):
but it's good for the growth of the league. So
the NFL constantly, I mean Aaron Rodgers early in the
season is all over television. Short week prep games, night game,
totally inconvenient to Aaron Rodgers. Now he's so good he
may overcome it, but it's clearly a disadvantage for the
Jets to be played on short weeks. They've got an

(30:15):
offensive line that's brand new. You're trying to get the
continuity and chemistry right. You'd like a buye earlier. Actually
you'd a week five or six by for that. Oh,
line could be a good thing. So it's like we
see sports do this all the time. I mean, Baseball
just said we're gonna put the Phillies in Mets in London.
Why it's good for business in all sports. UFC, when

(30:37):
Dana White stacks a card, you know he's stacking it.

Speaker 2 (30:41):
He can put a lot of fights on there.

Speaker 1 (30:42):
He's stacked. Okay, I got I got a star. I'm
trying to have this women's fight. This star rise, so
I'll put her on this card in between two great fights.
This is part don't get too rigid on well she's
not good enough to. I mean baseball is a great example.
If you're a high draft pick in baseball and you're

(31:03):
you're on the major league roster, right, so you're in
the minors, but you're being paid by the big club.
There's gonna be guys on that minor league Triple A
team that are hitting better than you and playing better
than you. But because you're a number one or two
draft pick, they're gonna bring you up. Yep. If you're
like a thirteenth round draft pick and you're playing your
butt off in bat in threeh eight and the kid

(31:24):
with talents bat in two fifty eight, they're gonna bring
the two fifty eight up if they want to see
him play. So life's not fair. Sports has always been
subjective and political. It could be high school sports, you
know what I mean. The coach's kid is going to
get some snaps. So you know this, well, this is
the beat. This is the beat. That's not the way.
Sports now is big business and business is political. It's

(31:50):
not linear all the time, it's not ideal. It's subjective.
We'll see it tomorrow live in la As third
