You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Welcome to the Herd,
Ladies and gentlemen.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
It's a beautiful Friday out here in Los Angeles. It's
me Jason McIntyre in for vacation and Colin Coward. Nobody
takes as much vacation as Colin Coward does. I'm joined
today by Alex Curry. Alex, great to see you, Great
to see.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
Colin deserves it, though you can't give him that much
slat you told me last time we did this.

Speaker 5 (00:48):
We're like, man, I'm.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Exhausted after three hours.

Speaker 5 (00:50):
How do you do the three hours? That guy take
some time.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
He is a machine.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
I don't know how he doesn't. Colin Cowherd one and only.
But Alex, the last time you were here it was
your birthday. I'm sure that celebration is great.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
What do you got this weekend?

Speaker 4 (01:02):
You're celebrating anything special Father'sday. Come on, your dad, you
should know that, right.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Thanks for reminding me.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
Yeah, one of my sisters just had her first baby,
so we'll be celebrating not only like my dad's Father's Day,
my husband's dad's Father's Day and then a.

Speaker 5 (01:18):
New father and the family.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah, it's also great early Father's Day. To thank you
very much, I am my dad.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Uh huh. Great sports weekend, lots of awesome night. Yeah tonight.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
Well, okay, we'll get to that in a bit.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
You're not feeling too We're gonna start with.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
The big news, obviously, the huge news in the NFL.
Trevor Lawrence, the awesome quarterback that can I call him underrated?
Underrated quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He's signed a massive
new deal. I see, five years, two hundred and seventy
five million dollars. The numbers are staggering. Two hundred million guaranteed.
For signing the contract, he got thirty seven and a
half million dollars, So we know Trevor Lawrence will spend

(01:55):
the weekend just swimming in bathtubs full of money. It's
awesome to be Trevor Lawrence, right, and you guys know
how this goes half the audience out there. Oh, they
overpaid Trevor Lawrence, Jay Mack. Come on, this guy hasn't
done anything. Three years in the league. He has one
playoff win. He's got the most turnovers of any quarterback

(02:15):
in the league since he was drafted. And I was
texting with one of the producers last night about one
of my big issues right now around the NFL is
how we talk about quarterbacks. And you know, we're in
an engagement economy, people, that's what we are right now.
You need to stay engaged. I need you watching ten
minutes of every chunk and online everybody. You got to
put out instagrammables, shareable content that can keep you scrolling.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
And one of the most popular.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Things to do now is these blind quarterback resumes. Yes
we do them on the show. Yes, I hate them.
I'm allowed to where we cherry pick stats to fit
our narrative. And folks, there's one out there that is
a whopper.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Jay. Have you seen the one on Trevor Lawrence versus
Daniel Jones.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
It's crazy, They're like the same guy, and I just
I feel like it's lowest common denominator nonsense. We do
this a lot online and now the smart people can
see through it and see, oh WHOA Pro Football Focus
shows that, damn, Trevor Lawrence is already one of the
best deep ball passers in the NFL over the last
three years. Well that's why they got him, Christian Kirk.

(03:18):
They looked at the analytics and said, oh, well, Trevor
Lawrence can.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Chuck it deep.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
He's got great deep ball accuracy, great window placement.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Yeah, he's had turnovers. You know what happens.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Peyton Manning struggled early in his career, John Elway, go
look up his numbers, early quarterback struggle.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
It's a young kid in his first three years.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
And truthfully, if you want to toss out his rookie
year where Urban Meyer was a disaster and gone before Christmas,
well that's okay, I'll understand that. And then you dig
in deeper into the numbers, and nobody wants to dig in. Right,
We're in like a bit of a lazy time here
in America for sports fans. Just give me the obvious numbers.
Nobody wants to dig deep, drill down, spend a few

(03:57):
minutes to like get smarter, because oh would you look
at that Trevor Lawrence in year two, midway through the season,
something clicked and he finishes on a hot street. Five
straight wins, They get to the playoffs, they win a game,
the great comeback against the Chargers that they lose to
the Chiefs.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
No harm in that. Okay, what happened in year three?

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Trevor Lawrence comes out of the gate on fire eight
and three to start the season. So look at that
end of year two, first half of year three, and
look at this sample size. Ladies and gentlemen, thirteen and
three record awesome numbers. Now, I know the touchdown passes,
you'd like to see them higher. Some of that is, hey,
you take what the defense gives you. He's got a
good running back in Travis etn. But that is a

(04:38):
full year sample of Trevor Lawrence. I know the three
year body of work is not great. And I know
there's people yelling at the TV and radio right now, Jay, Hey, hey,
I take CJ. Stroud over Trevor Lawrence.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Okay, so you have one good year of CJ. Stroud.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Yes, he was phenomenal, outstanding rookie year. Hit the ground running.
Looks like he's got a new offensive coordinator who was
outstate last year head coach.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Everything was great Jay Jordan Love.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yes, an eight game sample size of Jordan Love was outstanding.

Speaker 6 (05:09):
Very.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Praiseworthy stuff from Jordan Love.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
And you guys want to act like, oh well, I'd
take those guys over Trevor Lawrence. Folks, Trevor Lawrence has
shown us over a longer period of time when he
was dominant in college, when he.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Was very good for a good year.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
And then he had the high ankle sprain on Monday
Night football last year against the Niners. I think he
had a concussion, and the numbers went off a cliff
and the team fell out of contention. The wheels came off, Folks,
the Jags did this smart thing here early. I know
we're going to show the graphic here of what quarterbacks
are making an average amount per year. And now Trevor
Lawrence is tied with Joe Burrow at fifty five million

(05:48):
a year. And yes, does that look quote unquote bad. Sure,
but this is where the numbers are a little fuzzy.
Lawrence's new deal doesn't kick in until twenty twenty six,
so he's not making fifty five five million this year.
He's not making fifty five million next year. I opened
our morning meeting this morning with, well, this is great.
They signed him early. The money doesn't kick you in

(06:10):
till twenty twenty six. The Jag super Bowl window it's
still there, wide open, and the great producer Ryan Music
looks at me and laughs.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Now he's a big Burrow guy. He's laughing at me.
Super Bowl window. Come on? Can I get to the
second round of the playoffs?

Speaker 3 (06:23):
And I get that, but the deal that they have
for Lawrence doesn't kick in for two more years. They
do have a runway here, and I know the division
got better where the Jacksonville Jaguars with Trevor Lawrence should
be in contention in a tough, rugged AFC. I love
everything about this deal. I think Lawrence.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
I don't know if he's gonna live up to number
one billing and win multiple super Bowls, but he's a
damn good quarterback and the Jags did a darn good thing.
Now I'm gonna turn my attention.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
To a topic that you guys are probably gonna hate.
I have in my notes here this morning as I
was in the dressing room. The next story is a
doozy and You guys aren't gonna like this. But it's
about Caitlin Clark and something that happened yesterday.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
And know it does not.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Involve Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever winning against whoever they played.
I honestly don't know the opponent. She did not have
a great game. She had like seven points, seven turnovers.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Doesn't matter. Fever won, They're on track, maybe get in
the playoffs. But anytime Caitlin Clark does not.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
Have a great game, it gives fodder for the internet
dopes to say, oh, she's not Olympic worthy.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
She had seven points, Like, just stop. But what the real.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Interesting story with Kaitlin Clark is is what happened before
the game.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
So she met with the media, okay, and the media
has now.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
Expanded from let's not talk about chartered flights and promotion
for the league and Indiana Fever. We've kind of been
through that, let's not talk about the Olympics. And a
reporter tried to pin Caitlin Clark down on a difficult
question of the culture wars currently happening online.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
Yeah, we're going there.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
So Caitlin Clark was asked about people using her name
to promote agendas.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
And here's what she said.

Speaker 7 (07:58):
My God said, like basketball is my job, like everything
on the outside, I can't control that, So I'm not
going to spend time thinking about that. You know, gave
up and talk about what they want to talk about.

Speaker 5 (08:10):
Great conversations about you know, whatever it is.

Speaker 7 (08:12):
But I think for myself, like, you know, I'm just
here to play basketball.

Speaker 5 (08:16):
I'm here to have fun. I'm trying to help our
team line.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Oh yeah, it's a tough one for Kaitlin Clark.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Now, she was asked about it again later and she
had an answer, and she wasn't thrilled with how people
are using her name. And listen, I think Caitlin Clark's
handling this great. Okay, we're talking about a twenty two
year old rookie. Hey, Caitlin Clark, thanks for getting us
the chartered flights.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
That's outstanding.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
Thanks for selling out Arena's coast to coast and shining
a huge spotlight on this league. Thanks for promoting women's basketball.
And oh, by the way, thanks for dealing with a
target on your back every night. You come out great.
We know you're struggling to you know, solve defenses in
the WNBA that are all geared to stop you. But
do you think you could solve racism in America? Because

(08:59):
that's what it feels like. They're asking Caitlin Clark, Hey,
can you solve these culture wars? They're gross and disgusting.
And I would say, largely on this show, we have.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Not waded into that.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
We're kind of mostly focusing on Caitlin Clark at some
of the basketball aspects and uh, you know, the awesome
stuff she's done for the league, and yeah, we'll talk
about the cheap shots and the fowls and the threes,
but we're not wading into this culture war stuff, and
there's just really no win. Okay, surely you guys remember
Michael Jordan. He was asked about it once. He once

(09:30):
his star rose and he was winning chips. They're asking
Michael Jordan about his political Hey, are you gonna stump
for this candidate in North Carolina?

Speaker 2 (09:37):
You know where you're from.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
And of course Michael Jordan allegedly uttered the great line
Republicans by sneakers too, But he was not a twenty
two year old rookie. Okay, Tiger Woods, You guys remember
when Tiger Woods was ascending oh yeah. One side starts
popping up Tiger Woods. The other side hates Tiger Woods
because that's that's what we've done. Now in America, you
either are with us or you're against us.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
There's no in the middle. I'm in the middle. I
don't really care. I don't want to be on your
side or your side. I'll be on my side. I'll
be fine. But Tiger didn't take the bait.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
Tom Brady, if you guys famously remember once he's got
the Dynasty rolling and they see a certain red hat
in his locker.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Tom, what's going on here? Brady was like, kind of
damn it, I screwed up? How'd I get in his?

Speaker 3 (10:17):
And he navigated the waters definitely stayed right down the middle. Okay,
and Patrick Mahomes this off season had his dopey kicker
make all these comments and a commencement address, and you
know everybody's like, Pat, Pat, you got a wigh in.
We need your take, Pat, where are you are you
gonna defend us? You know Taylor.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Swift's on our side, Pat, are you gonna come to the.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
Patrick Mahomes is like, I don't talk to that guy.
Off season comes, I don't talk to him that was
basically it. Patrick Mahomes avoided it. So you're telling me
these veterans, these guys in their late twenties, whether it
was Jordan Tiger Brady, I think Brady was in his
thirties when it happened that and Mahomes in his late twenties.
They're avoiding the topic. But we now expect Caitlin Clark

(11:01):
to weigh in and save and solve racism in America
and misogyny and all that other stuff.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
You think a.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
Twenty two year old rookie Caitlin Clark's out here to hoop.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
She's trying to get better.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
She's trying to solve the defenses that are all bottling
her up and have one focus.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
I think it was one of the stars in the league.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
Kelsey Plumb was like, listen, we're playing Katelin Crunk. We
just want to chop the head off, and everything else
is fine. Everyone's geared to stop Caitlin Clark. She's trying
to worry about hoops and now she's getting asked about
being propped up in disgusting online culture wars. Are you
kidding me? I should chide the reporter and call them
out for even going year. But that's where we are
now right. The Olympics is yesterday's news. I had a

(11:40):
great Olympic take I used on my podcast this week.
I was gonna rejiggerate and kind of fire this week.
And now we're on from the Olympics to now culture
battles which have been fought by a lot of male athletes.
And I don't know, guys, I was going through looking
for a female athlete who had to deal with this
so early in her career. I can't find one. This
is uncharted territory, which is I guess how Kitlin Clark

(12:03):
likes it, but I do applaud her answer and listen,
she doesn't need my advice. I mean, she's got sneaker deals,
She's got a lot going on. I would say stay
in that middle. That's where the smart people are. You
guys have heard the great saying.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Listen.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
If your thoughts and political insights all align with your neighbors,
you're not a clear thinker.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
If they all align with all of.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
Your friends, you don't disagree with anything, you're not a
clear thinker.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
You need to be an independent thinker.

Speaker 3 (12:29):
And I think I believe Kitlin Clark is probably in
that group where she's not going to get sucked into
this nonsense.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
And I don't know, Alex. I'm a little worried for
Kaitlin Clark.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
She's a big burden to bear for a twenty two
year old rookie.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
But can we just acknowledge how well she has handled
the weight of the world in every possibility. I mean,
she went straight from March madness, right into the WNBA draft,
right into the WNBA then dealing with this criticism that
I don't think anybody could have anticipated. We knew that

(13:05):
she was going to alter and change the game for
women's basketball, and we've seen that as we have we
are talking about her every single day.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Every week.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
It's a new topic of Caitlyn Clark in what she
has not only done for the game, or what she
hasn't done, or what she's getting taken taken away. But
as you mentioned, she's twenty two years old and a rookie.
She hasn't even had a moment to breathe, from college
to the pros to just getting hounded with everything, and
as you've heard her say, she's handling it with so

(13:35):
much grace that I'm just here to play I respect
all the other players in this league. Everybody in this league,
no matter how you look, no matter what you do,
deserves the same amount of respect. And that's the route
she's taking, and that's the route she should stick to
unless something significant happens where you need to take a
stand on it for Kitlyn Clark, but with everything she

(13:56):
has been through just in these couple of months, you
have to applaud how while she's handled it.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
And I know some people are gonna hit me up.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
I will not be looking at my phone during the broadcast.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
I gotta be locked in, folks. But a lot of.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
People, Jason, when Kevin Durant said he just wanted to
hoop Jay, Hey, you were like, he's.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Not a leader.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
Well no, no, no, no, that's different. Caitlin Clark is a leader
of her team. Kevin Dury didn't want to be leader absconded. Sorry,
kad to come after you again. Anyways, Coming up next,
everyone has been freaking out about Aaron Rodgers's unexcused absence
from my jets. I kind of need to take a
deep breath. We're going to dive into that next year
on the Herd.

Speaker 8 (14:32):
Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd weekdays
and Noone Eastern, not a em Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio FS one, and the iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
App back here on the Herd.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
I feel like every time I'm in for Colin Cowherd,
the New York Jets pop up.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
Folks. It's not by design.

Speaker 3 (14:49):
The staff knows I'm a big Jets guy and I'm
kind of passionate for the team.

Speaker 8 (14:53):
I just.

Speaker 3 (14:55):
I just can't even with Aaron Rodgers anymore. You know,
have you ever had a neighbor who was just a
business and you just can't deal with him, to the
point where if you walk out your door to like
pick up the garbage and that guy walks out to
pick up his garbage, or just wait another like, you know,
two minutes scroll on your phone just.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
To avoid the guy.

Speaker 3 (15:13):
And I feel like that's happening with Aaron Rodgers and
the Jets and me right now.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
I'm just I'm at the point. I'm at my breaking point. Honestly.
Everywhere I go.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
I got a buddy who lives up the street and
he's a Packers fan. He's like, how's your boy, Aaron
Rodgers doing, you know, pointing and laughing, and you guys know,
I used to work at a celebrity magazine where it
was one of these glossies and we.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Would get all this news.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
It was a great job, you know, yeah, get interview.
I got to like interview Jessica al But it was
a great job. But PR one oh one was a
massive thing at this job. Anytime they knew there was
trouble ahead, they would they would find a second story
to kind of.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
Change the narrative quickly.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
We're seeing Elon Musk, this is happening with him right now,
He's in court all week, and then all of a sudden, Hey,
guess what your likes are private now on Twitter or
ex or whatever they call it. It's like you just
want to change the narrative. Well, the Jets bungled botched
this Aaron Rodgers disaster this week so badly, and I
think a lot of it, unfortunately falls on Robert Salah
who comes out and calls it like an unexcused absence

(16:11):
when he could have said like seventy four other things
to describe why Rogers isn't there this week. So obviously,
you know we have the sound. We're going to start
here back in January, Aaron Rodgers wanted to keep it football,
just the football, and here he is back in January
calling out the organization.

Speaker 9 (16:29):
Everything that we do has to have a purpose too.
When you step in the building, there's intentionality with everything
that you do. And it's not a half the time thing.
It's not a sometimes thing. It's not a most of
the time thing. It's an every time thing. If you
want to be a winning organization, then to put your
some position to win championships and be competitive, everything that
you do matters, and that has nothing to do with

(16:51):
winning needs to get out of the building.

Speaker 3 (16:54):
Okay, So Aaron Rodgers has been around all off season.
He's been at everything. You know, he hasn't missed anything,
and now here we go, Mini cam't mandatory. Rogers is
a no show because he has something that is still
not out there. I joked that maybe it was another
darkness retreat all the Rogers fans online.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
No, he said he's not doing that again. So maybe
he's at some a political event. I don't I don't
know where he is. I find heart believe cow Hurt
said he's vacationing somewhere. Who knows.

Speaker 3 (17:25):
Robert Salah at the podium this week sounded awful.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Explaining Rogers absence, Tyra said.

Speaker 8 (17:33):
He had only found out that morning.

Speaker 10 (17:35):
If there any reason why I wasn't communicated to him
before or.

Speaker 11 (17:38):
No, it's it's a one on one conversation. That's not
something the team needed to know about. Aaron and I
are on the exact same page. There's no issue between
Aaron or his teammates for that matter. So, like I said,
we addressed it yesterday. It's not it's it's more of
an issue for everyone outside the building than it is inside.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
Not a problem.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
I mean, Todd Rod Taylor of the backup just showed
up and was like, hey, you're starting today, bro, Aaron's out. Okay, sure,
I'll take first team reps. But this just goes into
the dysfunction of the franchise. I mean, folks, you guys
know I was born in New York. I'm a Jets fan.
I lived through the lean years, one win, a quarterback shuffle,
the Sam Darnold train wreck, Seeing Ghosts.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
Adam Gaze. I could go on down the list.

Speaker 3 (18:24):
It's been ugly, longest play longest drought without a playoff
appearance my Jets. I don't know where this ends. I
don't maybe Aaron Rodgers shows up and it's koumbai a
no big deal. But here's the thing, Sala said, no
teammates have issues. Well, Sauce Gardner, the best player on
the defense, or Quinn Williams whatever. Sauce Gardner came out

(18:45):
and he's angry, and he put out a tweet or
an x or whatever it's called.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
You know, are you guys.

Speaker 3 (18:50):
Really making a big deal out of this because he
missed two days of practice?

Speaker 2 (18:55):
Well, a Sauce, my guy, I'm a Sauce Gardner fan.
You know, I know.

Speaker 3 (18:59):
I said you could be trade him for a poo
poo platter of massive picks.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
I digress Sauce.

Speaker 3 (19:06):
Aaron Rodgers has said let's keep it football in the building,
And now when it's football time, Aaron's not in the building.
I don't know how you can chalk this up as nothing.
It's gotta be something, even if it's a couple day brushfire.
It's the latest in a string of pr disasters for
Robert Sala and the Jets, and I'm hopeful that Rogers

(19:28):
shows up.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
It's kumbai ya.

Speaker 3 (19:30):
The schedule is easy, the offensive line holds up and
next thing, you know, It's twelve and five and the
Jets are in the playoffs winning the division that is
in play, and I have I will be betting the
Jets to win the division.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
You can scoff if you want.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
The division's theirs, assuming Rogers can stay healthy and upright
and you know, locked in on football.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
Let's go to Alex Curry with the news. No, no,
turn on the news.

Speaker 8 (19:53):
This is the herd Line.

Speaker 4 (19:55):
News, Jaymeck. I can't help but feel sorry for you.
I like, what are you surprised? It's so on brand
for everything that's happened with Aaron Rodgers over the last
three seasons.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
You know what I'd love Alex is a brand of
just chill and cool and good vibes.

Speaker 4 (20:09):
Now what he is though, and that's a front he
puts on for you know, whatever phase in life he's in.

Speaker 2 (20:14):
At that point, where do we find that? Do they
sell that at any stores? Can I find that chill,
just good vibe quarterback? I don't know.

Speaker 5 (20:21):
Good luck, good luck hard to find.

Speaker 4 (20:23):
All right, Well, let's talk about the best team in
the NFL, because the Chiefs are coming off back to
back Super Bowl wins and now look to become the
first team to ever complete a three peat. Now, Casey
unveiled their rings last night, distributing more than four hundred
rings among the players in staff at the event. Now,
the trio of Reid, Mahomes and Kelsey now have three
rings in the last five seasons. Now, I don't know

(20:47):
if you took like a close look at these rings,
but they have five hundred and twenty nine diamonds, thirty
eight rubies, fourteen point eight carrot's worth of gems, which
is insane. Twenty eight of the diamonds represent holding all
appointents to under twenty eight points.

Speaker 5 (21:04):
In the playoffs.

Speaker 4 (21:05):
And then the top it opens up with the game
winning Tom and Jerry play design inside on the top
part and it's engraved with everything there. Then on the bottom,
I don't know if we're gonna see it in this
video of it being opened, but the bottom has like
a field with player pawns on it and then says

(21:25):
back to back on the side with the overtime twenty five.

Speaker 5 (21:28):
Twenty two win.

Speaker 4 (21:29):
These rings are insane. They're becoming like big trophies. But
it's here here you go, okay, So look at there's
the field on the bottom, and then the top part. Oh,
there's the play design engraved on it. That's just absolutely insane.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
I enjoy it, right, I mean yeah, in the.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
Best part we heard. I think you may have talked
about it yesterday. Travis kelcey shared that, you know he's
not retiring anytime soon, but he hasn't been one hundred
percent the last couple of seasons.

Speaker 5 (21:55):
He's thirty five years old.

Speaker 4 (21:57):
I think what this comes down to is like, as
long as you have Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, Travis kelce
as we all learned last season, you cannot count out
this team.

Speaker 5 (22:08):
You can't count out this team. But can they three peak?

Speaker 4 (22:12):
No, they will can I mean you don't want him
three you're speaking no chance.

Speaker 5 (22:17):
They've won three of the last five seasons.

Speaker 4 (22:20):
They've won the Super Bowl, and when they didn't win
it, it was what Tom Brady and then Joe Burrow in
the AFC Championship game. They have a top they have
a tough opening to the season. They're opening against the Ravens,
the Bengals, they have an early week six by week
we heard Travis kelce come out and explain why that's
tough when you're so banged up later in the season,
you kind of want it a little later. It's again

(22:42):
the last year we thought, oh man, they're not at
they're not at full strength. They're struggling. There's no way
they can do it. This is a down year for
Patrick Mahomes. And then he goes in and he goes
and wins the Super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
Yeah, three out of their final four on the road,
no left tackle. They're not repeating. And it's fine.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
Cheese fans.

Speaker 3 (22:59):
Yes, I I don't reply to these bozos on the internet,
but yeah, I see all Chiefs fans clip it off.
You said we were winning last year, Jason, yeap, Guys,
I don't congrats.

Speaker 5 (23:10):
Enjoy it came with receipts.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
You know that nothing lasts forever, Alex, But what does
a financial advisor say? Past performance is not an indicator
of future success. They've won some super Bowls, wonderful five
the best.

Speaker 5 (23:24):
This is a better non Chiefs.

Speaker 2 (23:26):
They're the best team in the league.

Speaker 5 (23:28):
Uh huh.

Speaker 4 (23:29):
Everyone bet against them. Everyone bet against them last playoffs.
I picked against them every game except the Super Bowl,
and I learned my life. I kept singing. I was like, ah, no,
Josh Allen can do it. I know the Ravens can Jackson.
They no one has proven that they can do it.

Speaker 2 (23:47):
Yet.

Speaker 4 (23:47):
When someone proves that they can take down Patrick Mahomes Andy.

Speaker 2 (23:52):
Joe Burrow took him down in Arrowhead Damp super Bowl.

Speaker 5 (23:56):
He hasn't been healthy since.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
Let's see, did the Jas beat him last year? They
lost a close one?

Speaker 5 (23:59):
I forget it.

Speaker 3 (24:02):
No, no, Alex, I'll put Joe the spot. Are the
Chiefs going back to back to back?

Speaker 2 (24:06):
Yes or no?

Speaker 3 (24:09):
Yes, he doesn't want to go on the dark side.
I'm ready for I'm saying they're not doing it?

Speaker 2 (24:15):
What did it? Pooper? Get off the fence? Is that
what it is? You got to make a call?

Speaker 5 (24:19):
I mean there's a three few.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
There's a couple of different sayings there. J mcram come on,
come on, come.

Speaker 1 (24:25):
On right now.

Speaker 5 (24:26):
We're moving on.

Speaker 4 (24:27):
We're sticking in the AFC West because the Chargers will
have their eyes on taking down the Chiefs after hiring
Jim Harbaugh this off season. Now, Harbaugh will be the
fourth head coach that Justin Herbert has played under in
his four seasons, and he spoke recently about playing with Harbaugh.

Speaker 12 (24:43):
It's been in honor to play for him so far,
to share that quarterback room with him. You know, he's
definitely a very intelligent, committed and competitive guy. He he
truly wants to win whatever he's playing, whether it's the
golf tournament, whether it's football quarterback competitions, he fully expects
to win. So whether we're pulling sleds, he expects to
be the fastest or to pull at the furthest and

(25:04):
when we're carrying those med balls, he's wanting to go
the furthest seas he wants to go the fastest. And
to have a guy like that set the stage, set
the standard, you know, for these undrafted guys, for these
rookies to see that, you know, I think they follow
in his footsteps.

Speaker 4 (25:18):
You can already feel a shift with this Chargers team,
and it starts with the respect, right you can hear
that from Justin Herbert talking about Harbaugh and then we've
heard Harrbat talking about Justin Herbert. I mean, that is
a huge piece of a championship team. Does everyone believe
in what you're doing? Can you buy in? And can
you absolutely trust everyone that you're around now?

Speaker 5 (25:40):
I mean.

Speaker 4 (25:42):
There aren't huge high expectations coming off of what five
and twelve last season. There's definitely going to be a
big turnaround. But you also have to remember this is
a new looking offense. They don't have Keenan Allen, Mike Williams,
Austin Eckler anymore. And again Justin Herbert has had four
head coaches in four seasons, so again learning, you're learning

(26:04):
just how to work with someone again, a new system.
Everything that's going down that way. So how much of
a jump can they make? That's kind of the question
of how far can they go. I definitely think they can.
They're gonna have a winning season. They have to have
a winning season, but you're still in a tough division
with the Chiefs, with the Broncos, with the Raiders, so.

Speaker 5 (26:25):
It's not again, it's not an.

Speaker 4 (26:27):
Easy path, but there is a light at the end
of the tunnel when you have a guy like Harbog
driving the ship.

Speaker 2 (26:35):
Yeah, I've gone back and forth.

Speaker 3 (26:36):
Will they immediately massively improve from five to say nine wins?
That's a big jump the big jump or is it
going to take a year or two while they get
weapons in places. Yeah, you look at the offensive skill
position guys, they're not great.

Speaker 5 (26:50):
Well, that's a big deal.

Speaker 4 (26:52):
Like Herbert's not only having a new coach, but a
whole new kind of like.

Speaker 5 (26:57):
Who am I going to the Yeah, a new.

Speaker 4 (27:00):
System, new guys, Like everything is going to be new,
but that's also not new for Justin Herbert, Like he's probably.

Speaker 2 (27:06):
One of the guys.

Speaker 5 (27:07):
It's like, okay, here we go again.

Speaker 3 (27:08):
I mean, listen, I think Herbert can wallpaper over some
of the ugly stuff on that offense, and Harball will
certainly help a lot just from his locker room presence.
I mean, they had Anthony Lynn, Brandon Staley, two guys
who you know better as coordinators than as head coaches.

Speaker 4 (27:26):
Clearly well, and we had now heard the tension that
was there between these guys and Justin Herbert, Right, we
found that out later on. And chemistry is everything. Do
you respect someone that you're working with? When you do,
you're gonna get a better product out on the field.
That kind of goes in like any walk of life. Right,

(27:46):
if you respect someone that you're working with, you're gonna
do a better job with what you're doing.

Speaker 2 (27:51):
Agree with you?

Speaker 4 (27:51):
Yeah, all right, Well, let's switch gears to the game tonight,
because the MAVs are on the brink of elimination tonight,
trailing three to zero to the Celtics, who got a
rough fourth quarter in Game three, fouling out with about
four minutes left in the game, including his final two
fouls in a twenty six second span. Now, despite his
complaints about the refs, Luca will look to just focus

(28:12):
on winning fun.

Speaker 6 (28:15):
You know, we talk about how we come back from
twenty points in a fourth quarter in the finals. We
were having fun. We're defending, we were running, our pace
was great and just taking good shots. I just really
want to win. You know. Sometimes I was surely the
right way, but then they really want to win, so

(28:36):
I got to do a better job, you know, showing
a different way.

Speaker 4 (28:39):
His frustration got the better of him in Game three,
and when you are the leader of the team, when
you are basically making everything happen for your team, you
have to learn to control your emotions in a moment
like that. They didn't have Luca their best player on
the court for the last four minutes of the game

(29:01):
and lost by seven points. I know, you do have
to remind yourself he is dealing with a knee and
a back injury, so you have to you have to
imagine that that frustration is something that's also playing into
everything here and the fact that he is doing everything
for the MAVs. And we did see Kyrie step up
a little better, but his guys are not leveling up

(29:23):
to where he's at. He is carrying this team through
these finals right now, and obviously it's not you can't
just have one. They've lost, they've lost the first three games.
It's not gonna work that way.

Speaker 3 (29:33):
I did bet against him in game three. I bet
he's under for points and luckily he fouled out. But
what sucks for him is he's not adjusting to how
the Celtics are defending it now because last round Minnesota
was like, We're just gonna play Lucas straight up, yeah,
and Luca's cooking in the in the middle of the rank,
in middle of the lane and step back threes. That's

(29:54):
not happening against Boston because of the length. Tatum and
Brown are great defenders, Holiday is great, and he's driving,
waiting for the double to come to kick it out
and there's nobody to pass to, so he's forcing bad
shots in twenty seven points on twenty seven shots, Alex.
It's not efficient and I didn't like the complaining. If
you look at that video of him and he takes
the charger. We've to do tried to draw the charge.

(30:15):
He looked at the bench and says, you better fing
challenge that like yelling, cursing at your bench from four
feet away.

Speaker 5 (30:21):
It's getting to him. Come on, it's getting to him.

Speaker 4 (30:24):
And this is where great athletes become superstars and iconic.
You have to learn to control your emotion. You want
to use that frustration in the right way on the court, right,
not towards the refs to get fouled out and to
kind of have that reputation as someone who's complaining all
the time. And you have to learn to control your

(30:45):
emotions when you are the top player on your team,
when you are the leader of anything.

Speaker 3 (30:50):
There's just so many examples of Like even the Celtics
when they were in the finals a couple of years
ago against the Warriors. I mean, Jalen Brown just turn
over machine in the fourth quarter. Taste Tatum gonna make
a shot. You go back to Lebron with the heat.
I know it was his second time in the finals,
but he just kind of melted it down. He wouldn't
take shots against Dallas, JJ Burrea locking him up. Yeah,
this happens. Let's not overreact. Lucas still, for my money,

(31:11):
the best player in the league. I would take him
over Yokich. I just he's had a rough series. It happens,
He's what twenty four, twenty five. I think it's gonna
be okay.

Speaker 4 (31:20):
I just I just hope for NBA fans maybe they
can sneak a win tonight so he can at least
get a game five.

Speaker 5 (31:29):
But I mean Boston is.

Speaker 2 (31:32):
Manhandling. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (31:32):
There, they are absolutely controlling the master.

Speaker 3 (31:35):
I know you have a busy social life, but let
me ask you. It's Friday night. Yeah, it's the start
of the summer. Yeah, and there's an NBA Finals game
on when the series is three to zero.

Speaker 2 (31:45):
It's not This isn't like stay at home. I gotta
watch this. Do not disturb.

Speaker 3 (31:49):
I'm not doing that like Friday night, Like this is
on my phone, I'll just check it.

Speaker 2 (31:53):
It feels over to me.

Speaker 5 (31:55):
You know, this is up.

Speaker 4 (31:56):
I mean, I'm watching it because I have my Fox
Sports radio show Fox Sports Saturday, where I'm gonna be
talking about it. But there hasn't been much buzz. But
I think where they also really messed up. There was
ten days in between, Yeah, the finals and the championship series,
and that just you're gonna lose any kind of audience
when you like just you drop off like that for

(32:18):
almost two weeks. And you can see it with the
players too. It's just it's a little different that that
drive in that hype isn't right there to just keep
it going, and fans are feeling that too.

Speaker 3 (32:28):
I know this is too hot of a take to
go long on, but this is just the facts. Yeah,
the Indiana Pacers played Boston better than Dallas has That's
a fact. They were in position to win three of
the four games CALEX in the fourth quarter. They had
like an above ninety percent win probability. Yeah, they're better
on the wings. They just simply match up better with Boston. Now,

(32:49):
they don't have better players than Dallas, but Dallas's players
don't match Boston's. It's just a bad They haven't scored
one hundred points hitting the series. Indiana was torching this
Boston defense. Yeah, no, it's without porzingis it's bad?

Speaker 5 (33:03):
This is Boston series.

Speaker 4 (33:05):
It's just are they gonna win it tonight or are
they gonna win it in Game five?

Speaker 3 (33:09):
And I do wonder like, is Boston so dominant and
built so well that we're gonna see teams adjust their strategy.

Speaker 2 (33:16):
We'll talk about it later in the show.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
Yeah, going forward, like, hey, Rudy Gobitt, maybe it said
at carl Ante Town's trade.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
You just get rid of Gobert.

Speaker 3 (33:24):
I know he was the defensi player of the year,
but it's like, let's just do the five out with
karl Antony Towns at center and find another wing. And
I'm sorry centers, but Alex, this is crazy. I looked
at the shot chart. Yeah, the Celtics took six shots
that were not threes or in the paint.

Speaker 2 (33:40):
That's it. Six mid range shots. That's unheard of.

Speaker 3 (33:42):
Yeah, this is the new basketball. So I think Boston's
got something special.

Speaker 4 (33:46):
And they're winning LUCA and they're doing it good, love it.
But they were the best team in the regular season. Yeah,
and they're they're proven it here in the finals.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
Well in the East Boy fourteen games, we forget that.
You Alex hurry with the news.

Speaker 8 (33:58):
Well that's the news and stopping by the heard line news.

Speaker 11 (34:02):
All right.

Speaker 3 (34:03):
We opened the show talking about Trevor Lawrence's big new deal. Well,
what does that mean for tua. What does that mean
for dak Mark Schleareth tells us next here on the Herd.

Speaker 8 (34:11):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and Noone Eastern, not a em Pacific.

Speaker 13 (34:16):
Hey, we're Covino and Rich Fox Sports Radio every day
five to seven pm Eastern.

Speaker 5 (34:21):
But here's the thing.

Speaker 13 (34:22):
We never have enough time to get to everything we
want to get.

Speaker 14 (34:24):
To, and that's why we have a brand new podcast
called over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun
in our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly,
because this guy is over promising things we never have
time for.

Speaker 2 (34:38):
Yeah, you blubber Liam and me.

Speaker 13 (34:39):
Well, you know what it's called over promise. You should
be good at it because you've been over promising women
for years.

Speaker 14 (34:43):
Well, it's a Cavino and Rich after show, and we
want you to be a part of it. We're gonna
be talking sports, of course, but we're also gonna talk
life and relationships. And if Rich and I are arguing
about something or we didn't have enough time, it will
continue on our after show called over Promised.

Speaker 13 (34:57):
Well, if you don't get enough, Covino and Rich makes
you check out over Promise and also uncensored, by the way,
so maybe we'll go at it even.

Speaker 5 (35:04):
A little harder.

Speaker 13 (35:05):
It's gonna be the best after show podcast.

Speaker 6 (35:07):
Of all time.

Speaker 14 (35:07):
There you go, over Promising. Remember you could see it
on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen to Over Promised
with Cavino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts
or wherever you get your podcasts.

Speaker 3 (35:19):
Back here on the Herd, Jason McIntyre in for Colin Kawher,
joined by Alex Curry.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
We've got a great guest coming in now. Listen.

Speaker 3 (35:26):
I can prattle on about Aaron Rodgers all I want,
missing two days of Mini caamp, But why don't we
bring in a Super Bowl champ who's been in mini
camps and knows.

Speaker 2 (35:34):
What it means when somebody's absent.

Speaker 3 (35:37):
Mark Schlereth joins The Herd. Mark, Happy Father's Day weekend
to you. Uh, let's start.

Speaker 2 (35:43):
With Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 3 (35:45):
A lot of the media members make it a big
deal out of him not being there. You've been at
all the mini camps during your career. I don't know
what does it mean when your quarterback, your leader just
is a no show.

Speaker 10 (35:56):
Well, I mean, I don't think that's ever a good look.
And I think upon what Aaron Rodgers had planned, what
his you know, what his excuse was, how he worked
through it with the team. Let's face it, all the
chips have been pushing in the middle. Aaron Rodgers is
everything to the New York Jets. They are banking on
Aaron Rodgers being healthy throughout the season. Look at the

(36:17):
beginning of the year, They've got six i think primetime
games early in the season. It's all about Aaron Rodgers
and his ability. Now, if you went if Aaron Rodgers
addressed the Jets and say, man, I've got this thing.
I cannot miss da da da. You know it's been
on the books for a year, didn't have the mini
caap schedule. Sorry, I'm gonna go do it. I think

(36:38):
if if that's the case, then I don't think it's
that big a deal. And they know all their hopes
of being a champion, all their hopes are saddled on
Aaron Rodgers. And you look at it last year. As
good as that defense was and they were exceptional last year,
when Aaron Rodgers went down, their season was over.

Speaker 8 (36:58):
They know that.

Speaker 10 (36:59):
And so as long as they're okay internally with it,
and I think the players are okay with it because
Aaron does a great job of building relationships with his guys.
He does a great job of leading his guys. I
just don't know what the circumstances were in regards to
what was addressed and why he's missing this. You know
why he's missing this time?

Speaker 2 (37:17):
All right, one more on Rogers real quick.

Speaker 3 (37:19):
But in all your time Washington, Denver, just being in
the league, can you ever recall a quarterback having so many,
shall we say, outside interest This isn't like a quarterback
who likes to go fishing or hunting. This is a
guy who was up for being a vice presidential candidate.
I don't know, Mark, It just strikes me as a
little odd and different, maybe just because we've never seen
it before.

Speaker 2 (37:39):
But I don't know.

Speaker 3 (37:40):
John Elway was not this kind of guy your quarterbacks
in Washington.

Speaker 10 (37:43):
John Alway had seven seven car dealerships. Why he was playing.
He was managing car dealerships, why he was playing. So,
I mean he had things, it just wasn't the social
media ass meg of it is one of those things.
Now we're more aware of some of the other interests.
But I guarantee you this sitting down with Aaron Rodgers
and having meetings with Aaron Rodgers before you call a

(38:04):
Packers game. There's nobody more dialed into the game plan.
There's nobody more dialed into what defenses are trying to
do to him. There's nobody who's more engaged in football
during the football season than Aaron Rodgers is. So, I mean,
I understand he's got some quirk in his to him,
I understand he's super intelligent. I understand he's got other interests.
But I guarantee you this, when he is ready to play,

(38:27):
when when they are in the season, when he is
preparing for that, that's what his focus solely is on.
So I don't I just don't have a lot of
concern for a guy who's done it to the level
that he's done it at for you know, into his
he's what forty years old now. If he's healthy, the
Jets have a great chance of winning that division. If

(38:49):
he is not healthy, they have no chance of winning
that division.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
Yeah, well said, all right, let's Trevor. Let's move to
Trevor Lawrence. Five years, two hundred and seventy five mil.
A lot of guarantee money. You know, again, you don't
want to judge the online takes. But people don't think
Trevor Lawrence.

Speaker 2 (39:06):
Has earned this.

Speaker 3 (39:07):
They're like, well, Jay Stroud must be worth more, Jordan
Loves should get more money. Mark just tell the people,
Trevor law you're not getting paid on.

Speaker 2 (39:14):
What you did. It's what you can be right.

Speaker 10 (39:17):
Well, yeah, you're getting paid for what you've done to
this point. And then obviously, you know, you get into
a position where this is not a quarterback desperate league,
it's a quarterback deprived league. And so if you've gotten
one that you think passes what I like to call
you know, this is a Joel Cladism the confetti test,
well then you're gonna have to make a decision at

(39:38):
some point on paying that guy. And so they feel
in Jacksonville that this is a guy that can take
them to the promised Land, they can win them a championship.
I guess you know the difference between a really good
quarterback and elite level quarterback is the elite level quarterbacks
tend to cover warks, right, They're like compound w Like,

(39:59):
this is absolutely cover the works of your football team,
and you're gonna have worts on your football team when
you pay a guy a large percentage of your salary cap,
so can he overcome the deficiencies on your team to
lead you to the promised land? Right now, I would
say Trevor Lawrence has proven to be a good quarterback,
but is he a war cover. No, And they're banking

(40:20):
on the progression that he will continue to get better
and better and better and he'll be able to cover
those works. But at this point, I look at them defensively,
I think they're really a talented football team. But will
he be able to cover whatever offensive works they have?
That remains to be seen. But that's the market, right
I mean, I understand you haven't won playoff games. You
haven't you know, competed for a division chance or for

(40:42):
a for a conference championship, you haven't gone to the
super Bowl. I understand the complaints there, But that's the market.
That's what everybody's looking for. And sometimes you're gonna sign
a guy just because there's nobody else out there. I
don't think. I don't think that's in the same categories.
Like Daniel Jones. Daniel Jones feels to me like I

(41:03):
call it an e or contract on my podcast, right, Like,
oh no, we gotta sign our quarterback. There's nobody else
to sign, you know, I mean that's the e or contract.
I don't think Trevor Lawrence fits in that category. We've
just got to do this because there's nobody else. We've
got nowhere else to go.

Speaker 3 (41:21):
Yeah, all right, we could wrap up with the Patriot Way.
A lot is being made in New England. We're not
gonna do things the way Belichick did them. You know,
we're gonna bring in this rapper to throw passes in
the off season.

Speaker 2 (41:31):
That's cool and fun. And look at this.

Speaker 3 (41:33):
I don't know, Mark, Patriot Way kind of sort of
worked for two decades, you know, the rigidity, the militaristic
attitude of Belichick kind of sort of worked. I don't
know your thoughts on the Patriots.

Speaker 10 (41:44):
Well, it worked because you had guys within that organization
that allowed it to work. I mean, Brady could sit
in a team meeting and get yelled at by Bill
Belichick like I could find a you know, I can
find a quarterback from Foxborough High School could do you're doing.
You know, you know, you could chew him out. He
had the Teddy Bruskis of the world. He had guys

(42:05):
that he relied on to be able to take the
brunt of that criticism during the course of a team meeting,
and then all the young guys had a fall in line,
like if you're gonna shout out Tom Brady, if you're
gonna cuss him out, then I've got to be able
to take that as well. And when you start losing
those guys, you know, you don't have that prevailing attitude
of of you know, everybody's got to be, you know,

(42:26):
going to fall in line. So I would say that
that's probably more more the reason that you're moving off
that militaristic way because a lot of the players of
today aren't going to handle that well because you don't
have those guys sitting in there taking it like Tom
Brady and Teddy Bruski and some of the other great
players that played for Bill Belichick in the organization.

Speaker 3 (42:47):
All right, great stuff, Mark Schlareth, two time Pro bowler,
three time Super Bowl champ, Thanks a.

Speaker 2 (42:52):
Lot, enjoy Father's Day weekend. Hey buddy you too, All right,
great stuff from Mark.

Speaker 3 (42:57):
Youah, the soft modern app they can't handle the rigid
Bill Belichick. Coming up next year on the Herd, The
Celtics set up for long term success.

Speaker 2 (43:08):
You know it.
