Speaker 3 (00:26):
Hello and welcome to The Herd on a beautiful Wednesday. Yeah,
it's me Jason mcintarre, still in for Colin Cowhard and
I am supporting a mustache I've been hiding because well,
we'll fight out soon. Wine Sports takes you know, that
kind of thing, Joined as usual.
Speaker 4 (00:43):
By Alex Curry Alix.
Speaker 5 (00:44):
That was Vegas d It was awesome, beautiful chaos. So
now I can say we went for kind of like
a farewell tour to the Mirage because it's closing down
in a week.
Speaker 6 (00:53):
Hard Rocks taken over, so this was.
Speaker 5 (00:55):
Kind of like a last day last like nice kind
of was one of my buddy's spots back in the
So Yeah, most fun. I learned a new game played,
a Baker Rock Barber played.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
I've heard of it. Yeah, I've heard of wild. I'm
familiar with wild I've never played.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Yeah, some good winning bets that we can catch it
in the future. Yeah, my four days off. Thank you
to Fox for a couple of days off. A soccer
We went down to San Diego, had had a little fun.
It was great, and you know, I had hosted Friday
and I had what I thought at the time was
an awesome take.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Oh my gosh, I thought it was sick.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
What if Lebron takes less than the max and the
Lakers coming to get a couple of free agents. Lebron says, hey,
you guys gave me jj Reddick, you gave me Bronny,
I'll take less than the max.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
So I dropped that Friday.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Thought it was awesome, got a little pushback online expectedly,
but then I'm in San Diego over the weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
My phone starts blowing up.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Lebron, it's gonna take less than the max, Lakers are
gonna get free agents, and I'm doing a victory lap
like you haven't seen folks.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
I'm telling my kids, guys, I nailed this take. It
was so good.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
And they look at me, Dak, can we go get gelatto?
Speaker 7 (01:57):
Like?
Speaker 4 (01:57):
Can we go get some ice cream? Then they don't care.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
And then I text the staff here, this might have
been my greatest.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Take in twenty twenty four. Feeling good.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Oh look, and I know all the dopey social media
accounts that followed this show, you know, and criticize.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
Us what we whiff.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
They're gonna give me props for nailing this right. I
felt great about this Lebron take. And then it comes out, well,
Lebron wants four or five guys, and slowly but surely,
over the weekend they start coming off the list. James
Harden not coming to Lakers, Jonas Valentunis, he went to
the Wizards, and then the big one, Klay Thompson, that
(02:33):
one hurt that stung.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
Klay Thompson spurns the Lakers.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
Advances for the MAVs, and at that point it's, oh, damn,
this is depressing. The Lakers aren't gonna get better. Their
only signing was Max Christie. Somehow he got eight million
dollars a year from the Lakers. So all of a sudden,
Lebron looked heroic for like a seventy two hour window.
And then we get the news this morning, right before
(02:58):
the show, Lebron staying with the Lakers on a two
year max deal. Wamp Wamp Sad Trombone. It happens, Lebron tried,
it was a valiant effort, and the Lakers end up
with nobody. And now the question turns to, well, does
nobody want to play with Lebron? James's the Lakers brand damaged,
(03:20):
Danny Hurley rejected them. Now free agents are just giving
him the Heisman? Or is Rob Polnka just really bad
at his job? And it's probably a little bit of
all three, right, I mean, listen, you can't totally blame
Clay Thompson for saying, yeah, I think I'm gonna go
to the Maths because they got a better chance at
the title, and they were just in the finals last
year and unequivocally they're better than the Lakers.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
So you can't totally blame.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Klay Thompson, even though Lebron allegedly called Clay to recruit him.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
James Harden, why is he leaving the Clippers?
Speaker 3 (03:51):
It's his show now, right, Paul George Clippers very clearly
did not want him. We'll get to Paul George shortly,
and essentially, James Harden's like, oh damn, we got a
new Arena. We're gonna be on TV all the time.
Kawhy is probably gonna miss half the season because that's
what he does. And no, Paul George, this is this
old school James Harden. I'm gonna be rocking twenty twenty
five shots a game. Why would he go to the
(04:12):
Lakers where he's gonna be like the third banana to
a d and Lebron obviously stay with the Clippers. The
one that was kind of a slap in the face
was Valentchounis picking the Wizards, the lowly Wizards, I mean,
the dregs of the league. They're gonna be tanking for
Cooper Flag. But you know, I'm sure Lebron was kind
of hurt because you need somebody to guard Yokich as
Nuggets have extinguished the Lakers the last two playoff runs,
(04:36):
and I guess I kind of sort of them having
to take like a positive reaction to this. And I
know people are gonna be outset because everybody wants to
take shots at Lebron and hammer the Lakers. But hear
me out Okay, what if the Lakers dodged a bullet
by not landing Klay Thompson is that possible. Is it
possible the Lakers dodged a depreciating asset in Klay Thompson.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
I know he had moment last season.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
I believe it was April he went off and Clay
had a really, really good month.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
It was like eight or nine games.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
But listen between the pouting the benching. I don't know
if it was over his contract. He was just unhappy
with the demise of the dynasty. Clay had had some
pretty rotten moments last year. And I won't even bring
up the er for ten to end the season in
the play in game against the Kings.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
So it's possible the.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Lakers dodgs the bullet And I'm gonna hit you guys
with a bit of a truth bomb here. I looked
at the Lakers roster right before coming on the show.
This kind of surprised me. They have two guys over
the age of thirty on the entire roster, two Ad
and Lebron.
Speaker 8 (05:35):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
This is a young team.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
So good news, big picture, macro Hey, Lakers, they're building something.
They brought in a young, smart coach in JJ Reddick
to relate to the young guys.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
That's a good news. The bad news is, of course.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
There probably not contending for a title with this team
next year. Now they won forty seven games.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
Which is nice, but A it's in the West.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
And B they didn't get out of the first round,
which I think to a larger story in the league.
And I'll pivot to this is the end of the
Big three era in the NBA.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
It's over put done. It had a good run.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
Rip you can write the tombstone if you want, but
there are no more big threes in the NBA. It's
officially done. And the Big Three had an amazing run. Okay,
remember you go back Parker Ginobili Dunkin.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
They kind of ushered it in the in the early.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
Two thousands, and then you had KG, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen.
Big threes were in vogue. They kind of started the
super teams. And then Lebron's like, okay, let me go
create the Heatles with Wade, and I'll go create Ad
Bosh and we got a big three. Then Lebron goes
back to Cleveland, another big three. Then the Warriors get
(06:45):
their Big three with Curry and Clay At the time
and KD. Big threes were what the lead. They were
driving everything they're driving force behind the success of the league,
and about ten teams mattered, and every summer you'd see
fans of about those ten teams.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
How can we rejigger.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
The rosters so we can add a third star and
you know, become one of the super teams in the league.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Super teams were hot.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
And the NBA said, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
this ain't good. We don't want ten teams relevant, we
want parody. And the socialists in the NBA. Sorry, I
had to make a political reference. I am all for
equality of opportunity. I'm not for equality of outcome, which.
Speaker 4 (07:26):
Is what the NBA wants.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
But the NBA is kind of winning last six years,
six different NBA champions. And if you look around the league, folks,
there are two big threes that before the sixers out
of Paul.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
George, that's it.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
There's really two official big threes, and that's the Bucks
who went to play for Damian Lillard. Jannis Middleton and Lillard.
We know how that worked out. They lost in the
first round. I know Giannis was hurt. They didn't look
good it at any point last season. And then there's
the Phoenix Suns who had KD Beale and Booker and
that flamed out spin spectacularly getting swept by the Timberwolves
(08:03):
in the first round, which leads me to Paul George
and the latest Big Three. I'm using air quotes for
the radio audience because I don't know that it's a
Big three. I like Paul George a lot. I've always
loved his game. I'm on record, you can look it up.
I mean, this guy at Indiana, Oh my goodness, he
was so good. What toe to toe with Lebron, smooth
(08:23):
game inside out, let his game do the talking until
he got kind of in his head and called himself
playoff p which hasn't quite worked out great.
Speaker 4 (08:32):
I like Paul George a lot. He came to the.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
Clippers and they basically did nothing with Kawhi Leonard. I
know they won two playoff series in five years, something
insane like that. This is I know you can blame
the injuries, but is Paul George really a superstar in
this league? I was gonna I actually was going to
pitch the staff. I didn't even tell them this. If
we do a top twenty players, is Paul George definitely
(08:56):
top twenty in the league. I mean all NBA. Right,
there is fifteen alone. Paul George's fringe all NBA. I
don't know if he's the top twenty guy. We could
maybe break it down tomorrow. Yeah, I'll be back hopefully.
And I just don't know if this is gonna work
out for Philadelphia. Okay, the Big Three era is over?
And why is that over? Because you've got to round
out your roster with minimum guys. Go look at the
(09:18):
Bucks roster. It's three dudes, maybe a fourth.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
If you want to count.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Whoever their fourth guy would be. Bobby Portis is still there.
I think, like, who do they have after that? Bucks
don't have anybody. It's looking bleak in Minnesoter in Milwaukee.
Speaker 7 (09:36):
Sorry.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
And then you look at the Phoenix Suns and folks,
that roster is really bad. They've got a pooh pooh
platter of minimum players to go with Kde Booker and
Bale and nobody thinks I don't even know if they're
top eight in the West. So now you go to
the Sixers and you're like, Okay, well they're in the East.
J they'll be fine. And also, Tyrese Maxey is young
and ascending, and Tyrese Maxee is a nice player. Paul
(09:57):
George really good wing. I don't know if he's a
top twenty player. And then there's Joel Embiid, who is
was the MVP two years ago, and we know he's
a terrific player.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
He's always hurt.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
By the way, Paul George and Joel Embiid two of
the most injured players in the last five years in
the NBA playoffs. So you're telling me that's a big three.
I won't even get into the machinations of what was
the Paul George market, Like, well, the Knicks could have
had him and said no, we're good, We're gonna go
with no time all star McHale Bridges and bet on
(10:28):
chemistry over star power. And you know, allegedly the Clippers
were talking to the Warriors about trading Paul George there,
but then it comes out that the Clippers were never serious.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
They're not keeping Paul George in the West.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
So if you take the Warriors out and the Knick
said no, and the Orlando Magic, you know, they had
the cap space and all of a sudden they use
it on KCP. Seriously, they gave him sixty six mili.
Maybe they got win Paul George wasn't gonna pick Orlando,
but or literally didn't make an offer to Paul George,
and so essentially Philly fell ass backwards into Paul George.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
That's how they ended up getting their third star.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
It sounded like there was this race for Paul George
and he had to take six.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
Meetings because nobody has cap space.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
It doesn't work anymore, The math doesn't add up. And
I'll end with this and I'm just I like Paul George.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
He's a smooth player. He's a really nice guy.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
He appears by all accounts, and this is probably gonna
come off a little harsh, but this is just real talk,
and Paul George, get.
Speaker 4 (11:28):
Ready for it.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
In all the big threes that we've seen that come
up short, somebody is the fall guy.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
Somebody gets blamed, somebody has to take a step back.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
Whether it's Chrisposh with the heatles going from like a
twenty four to ten guy in Toronto to he's spotting
up in the corner and he's like a sixteen and
ten guy. Kevin Love in Cleveland, remember when he was
in Minnesota analytics Darling, I think he was like twenty
five and eleven in Minnesota.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
Stats have to come back. You're playing with little Ron
and you look.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
At some of these victories. Somebody's got to sacrifice. And
I'll ask you this, Paul George, are you willing to sacrifice?
Because I'm telling you right now, Tyrese Maxey they love
him in Philadelphia. He's a homegrown guy. He's a young
talent who is big time ascending in this league. He
might be on the Anthony Edwards track. For all we know,
he will not Tyrese Maxey. He will not be taking
(12:23):
a step back. Do you think Joelle Embiid is gonna
be taking a step back. Joel Embiid beloved in Philadelphia.
Probably not on the level of Kelsey and Hurts, but
they love Embiid. He's bulletproof. The guy doesn't show up
in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
Often. Go look at what happened against the Hawks, Go look.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
At what happened, even more recently against the Celtics when
they were up three to two and totally blew that.
Embiid no show and he's bulletproof. He doesn't take any
hits anywhere. Paul George, you're gonna be the fall guy.
They're gonna come after you. Well, Paul George didn't defend.
He couldn't defend the wings. Paul George's offense, he shot
four sixteen. Paul George, I hope you're ready for that
(13:03):
because it's tough. They're going to blame someone, and unfortunately, Paul,
it's probably gonna be you.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
End of the Big Three era is disappointing. It had
a great.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Run and now we usher in the two plus one
or two or three.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
But good luck to the Sixers.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
I will at some point in the next two days
break down what I think of the top eight in
the East, and the Sixers will barely crack my top four.
I'm telling you watch out for Indiana. Just Pacers are
gonna be spicy. So Alex Curry, I am excited. For
so far, NBA Free agency's been fun.
Speaker 5 (13:36):
It's been like beautiful chaos. We've got some big moves.
But like as you were just saying, the leak's kind
of in the middle of a transition right now. You're
saying Big Three are out Warriors dynasty and they're Big
Three is officially done with Klay Thompson going to Dallas,
and then you have like the big stars that we're
the big names of the last decade plus two decades,
Lebron Curry KD.
Speaker 6 (13:55):
They're still great, but they're not.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
They're not the selling point we're seeing with all these
trades in the free agency in these first couple of days.
Speaker 6 (14:04):
So it's just it's new.
Speaker 4 (14:06):
Yeah, it feels like a bit of a reset.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Buttoneah in the NBA, all right, Coming up next here
on the Herd, a lot of drama in Dallas. The
latest is we got a defender taking shots at the
star Defender. Oh my gosh, is it over for the cowboys?
That's next here on the Herd.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and neon eastern non am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app Over.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Winter break, and the wife and I started watching the
show called The Office. You know, this was at the
time of like DVDs or whatever, so I think we
downloaded or bought the entire for first four seasons of
the Office, and we get really into the show. It
stars Steve Carell. And there's a gentleman on that show
named Andy Bernard who went to Cornell. If you watch
(14:53):
a show, and he had an incredible line that has
stuck with me until today.
Speaker 4 (14:58):
I want to get it exactly right.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
I wish there was a way to know when you're
in the good old days before you've actually left them. Okay,
let that sink in for a moment, and now let's
turn to the Dallas Cowboys, who have won twelve games
each of the last three seasons. Those were the good
old days.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
They're gone. It's over.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
This team is disintegrating as we watch it week by
week this offseason. Between Jerry Jones and his we're going
all in nonsense, followed up by crickets in free agency,
mediocre moves in the draft, a quarterback who's looking to
(15:42):
get paid, a coach who's looking for a contract and
is fed up with the owner. A wide receiver in
Ceedeelamb who wants to get paid and is now threatening
I ain't going to camp if I don't have a
new deal. And then we've got the latest bomb, which
dropped over the weekend. One's defense on defense crime. Okay,
you guys know Malie Cooker, former Ohio State defensive back,
(16:05):
won a chip with the Buckeyes. Very talented player. He
came on the same year that the Cowboys drafted Micah
Parsons and Malik Hooker went on Keyshawn Johnson's podcast, All Facts,
No Breaks, and here's what he had to say about
defensive star Michaeh Parsons.
Speaker 9 (16:24):
My vice would be, Michael, would be, you know, just
make sure we are you know, and being where your
feet are because if we're at working, you know, the
run games terrible. But you're doing a podcast every week
and you know the run game is terrible. That you know,
what are you really caring about? Are you caring about
the crowd that was watching your podcast? You caring about
the success of our team and the Super Bowl that
we're trying to reach.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Oh boy?
Speaker 3 (16:50):
Of course Michaeh Parsons didn't take long for him to
see this, and he then replies on social media, Bro,
you're my locker made, you know, why don't you tell
me this instead of go announce it on a podcast?
And that's where it gets interesting because it's like, Okay,
Malie Cooker's a veteran, why would he do this? Why
wouldn't he just you know, tell Michah Parsons, hey man
(17:13):
show with the podcast, our run defense stinks. And it
brings up an interesting question because back in April. If
you guys remember, a Dallas radio host pointed out that
four different sources in the locker room have said they're
fed up with Michael Parsons. All the success went to
his head, the early numbers, the defensive Player of the
Year votes, all this stuff has gone to his head.
(17:35):
And he's a bit of an egomaniac, according to some
Dallas radio host. And I don't know about you guys,
but I think back to how the Dallas Cowboys and
Jerry Jones really built that dynasty in the mid nineties,
and it was the Herschel Walker trade that was the
impetus that started everything in the right direction. And a
lot of people think, oh, you just move on from Dak. Okay,
(17:56):
it doesn't really solve your quarterback problem. And Dak was, oh,
that's why he was a runner up for MVP last year.
Speaker 10 (18:03):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
So then they's Ceedee Lamb, who's very good and you know,
obviously one of the top five six receivers in the league.
Speaker 4 (18:09):
And then there's Michael Parsons. And I mentioned this.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
I don't know if it was recently or last month,
but as good as Michael Parsons has been in the
regular season, dude's been on a milk carton in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
Let's run the stats. I know this is not gonna
make MICHAEH.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Parsons happy. I'm sorry, it's just the stats, Micah. But
in the playoffs you basically ghosted the Cowboys. One sack
in four games, a whopping four quarterback hits.
Speaker 4 (18:35):
You're not forcing fumbles.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
The regular seasons have been awesome, obviously, but where is
the guy in the postseason?
Speaker 4 (18:41):
Oh you mean teams.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
Can scheme him out or they can run at him
because he's not a great run defender.
Speaker 4 (18:47):
Oh okay, gotcha.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
And now he's doing a podcast, and it's clear not
everybody has the gravitas in that locker room to challenge
Michael Parsons. The dudes at Alpha, he's a monster on
the defensive side of the football. He goes to all
like the Mavericks games. He's a big.
Speaker 4 (19:06):
Dude around the Everybody loves him. So who's willing to
challenge him?
Speaker 3 (19:10):
And that's Molie Cooker, a veteran maybe maybe just maybe
Micah Mallie Cooker speaking for the locker room when he's saying, hey, man,
maybe you should share with the podcast and kind of
focus on, you know, our product on the field.
Speaker 11 (19:23):
Now.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
I know we could say Mollie Cooker, that's out of pocket.
He's recording a podcast. What is that an hour of
his time?
Speaker 4 (19:29):
Two hours? Come on?
Speaker 3 (19:31):
Okay, But there's clearly a faction in the locker room
that thinks that. I don't think Malie Cooker's gone rogue
here to put this out there, maybe Dan Quinn would
talk about it if fast, if asked in Washington. I
don't know what is anyone else capable of standing up
to Michael Parsons. We know Jerry Jones ain't gonna do it.
He loves his homegrown guys. He don't want to get
rid of Ceede Lamb or Michael Parsons. I'm just putting
(19:52):
it out there.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
There's a couple teams with a.
Speaker 3 (19:54):
Quarterback on a rookie deal who can make a move
for Michah Parsons and pay him. I think I think
the Cowboys have to be serious if you're trading one
of the big three, because he can't afford all of them.
If you want to keep this train rolling, I think
Michael Parsons has got to be the guy.
Speaker 4 (20:08):
You'll get a big hole.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
I think Jalen Ramsey fetched two first back in the
day when the Jags traded him.
Speaker 4 (20:14):
Why couldn't Michael Parsons fetch two first?
Speaker 3 (20:17):
I mean, why can't Dallas get a hole for him
and quickly reset? I mean, it's much easier to find
a pass rusher, is it not, than it is a quarterback.
Speaker 4 (20:25):
And you could say, well, Dak's not a franchise quarter Okay,
he was runner up for MVP. But continue to.
Speaker 3 (20:30):
Take shots at Dak Prescott. I mean again, I showed
you the Michael Parsons playoff numbers. They're not there, and
it's the sample size of four games. I get it.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
Look around the league.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
Defensive edg rushers can be had anywhere. And you're telling
me this guy causing rifts in the locker room. Cowboys,
y'all got problems.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
Let's go to Alex Curry.
Speaker 11 (20:51):
With the news.
Speaker 7 (20:52):
No, no, turn on the news.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
This is the herd Line news.
Speaker 5 (20:58):
It's a hot mess in Dallas. We just agree on
that right now. From Jerry go and we're going all
in this offseason to nothing happening. And then it's never
a good sign when you have drama leaking out of
the locker room to national meetings.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
Well, it's good for us.
Speaker 6 (21:12):
It's great for us.
Speaker 5 (21:13):
And also, like like a lot of players have podcasts now,
like as long as they're not doing it on like
practice days, game days, like on their off time. Let
people build their brand, Let them cook. Let him, yeah,
let it, Let him build his brand.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (21:28):
Let's talk about the Lakers though, because they officially introduce
her twenty twenty four draft picks this week, and all
eyes were on Brownie James, the Lakers' second round selection.
Knows that he's going to have the spotlight on him
during his rookie season, but he says he feels prepared
to handle all of the pressure.
Speaker 11 (21:44):
Just for sure, the amplified amount of pressure. I've already
seen it. Stuff and media and stuff on the in
the internet and stuff talking about I might not deserve
an opportunity, but you know, I've been dealing with stuff
like this for my whole life. So it's it's it's
nothing different, but it's it's it's more amplified, for sure.
Speaker 7 (22:06):
But I can get through it. I just want to come.
Speaker 11 (22:09):
In and get my work in and get better every day.
But I've never really had a thought of, you know,
me going to play with my dad. But that's always
you know, there to you know, take part of, but
that wasn't a main focus. I monitor.
Speaker 5 (22:27):
And when he talks about pressure, like, yeah, he's grown
up with pressure and the spotlight on him being Lebron
jameson and being named after Lebron James. But the moment
that his dad mentioned a couple of years ago that
his goal was to play with his son, then yes,
of course, like that's been top of mind and top
of everyone's mind because we knew that was going to happen,
and it did happen, and it reported that the Lakers
(22:49):
are going to sign him to a four year, seven
point nine million dollars guaranteed rookie deal, which the only
thing that's like not super common for the second round is.
Speaker 6 (22:56):
A guaranteed contract.
Speaker 5 (22:59):
So this is going to come down to, like, if
he doesn't live up to expectations, I think the finger
pointing is going to end up on his dad and
Lebron James. But the end of the day, like this
is a really cool situation. We've never had a father
son duo in the NBA. If it works out, he's
going to have all the resources right in his fingertips
and the emotional side of it for Lebron being able
(23:23):
to treat your son like a teammate.
Speaker 6 (23:24):
Whoever that's going to go, we don't know yet.
Speaker 5 (23:27):
We did see one of the legendary father son duos,
Ken Griffy Junior, talk about that when this does happen,
him and his dad are going to be front row
watching this and supporting it. But it's again, we don't
We don't know until we see what he's capable of
on the court.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
I think this is a dream of any dad. He's
got kids in sports.
Speaker 4 (23:45):
Like you know, my son is.
Speaker 3 (23:46):
Now thirteen, and we played pickleball together sometimes and we
wreck some people. We did get beat by two grandmas,
some of these grandma's, Alex, I'm not kidding.
Speaker 4 (23:54):
I was like, do you guys play a lot?
Speaker 6 (23:57):
It's the retirement sport, this lady goes.
Speaker 4 (23:59):
We play about every day for the last three years.
Oh yeah, Holy cow. But it's like super fun playing
with your kid in a sport.
Speaker 6 (24:05):
Now it's living out a dream.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (24:07):
So I can't not even mat, I can't fathom Lebron
playing with his son against I don't know, the suns
or whatever.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
And you know, they're on the court together. That's gonna
be cool.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
Like people can poo pooh the contract whatever, I don't care.
It's a guaranteed contract.
Speaker 6 (24:21):
A legendary situation. Hopefully it goes well.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
It's gonna go well either way, even if they lose games,
it's gonna go well.
Speaker 7 (24:28):
You know.
Speaker 5 (24:28):
Okay, Well, let's talk about the champs now, because Jason
Tatum and the Celtics have reportedly agreed to a five year,
three hundred and fourteen million dollars super Max extension. And
this comes on the heels of the franchise's eighteenth NBA title,
where Tatum led the team in points, rebounds, and assists
per game in the finals. This deal is now the
largest in NBA history, surpassing the extension Boston gave Jaylen
(24:50):
Brown just last year. So, I mean, Boston, they they
they paid everybody. They also paid Derek White this offseason.
The band is back together and they're looking to run
it back. But I think the weirdest, the weirdest thing
that kind of came out this week with the Boston
Celtics is their majority owner announced that he's going to
(25:11):
be selling his shares in the teams.
Speaker 6 (25:14):
You just won your eighteenth title.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
You just gave all of your guys their max deals
you and then now you're you're out. And Jason Tatum
was also reported saying that he was shocked about the
timing in this situation, and he hopes that the culture
and the ownership will maintain itself.
Speaker 4 (25:31):
She shouldn't be shocked.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
These guys are businessmen first, sports fans second, so they're
gonna look to cash out and get paid, right, that's obvious.
Speaker 4 (25:40):
It's funny the Tatum.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
I saw all these negative comments when I posted about
Tatum on Instagram, and all these guys like, oh, he's
not even a top five player, Like what are you
guys talking about? Just want to market, you know. Yeah,
Like he's up for a contract. Yep, he's gonna get
more than the last guy. I mean, he let, as
you said, led the Celtics in points, rebounds, and assists.
(26:02):
I thought he should have been MVP in the finals, whatever,
first Team All NBA three years in a row. I think,
for my money, Tatum is unequivocally a top five player
in the league. I don't know how people can say
he's like seven eight nine whatever. It's just it's stunning
to me that people continue to be negative about Tatum
when I think he's just tremendous. Like everything about this guy,
I like.
Speaker 5 (26:21):
They got the job done. Like if you're gonna get
a Max deal, it's one hundred percent gonna come after
you win a championship. He's a big reason that they
got there.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
It's funny everybody loves like Shay Giljess, Alexander got a
lot of money, got can you get out of the
second round first? Like Tatum's a way more than that
in his young career. I just I like Tatum and
I don't like anything Boston.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
As I continue to say, I'll repeat it.
Speaker 5 (26:44):
All right, Well let's move to the w because the
w NBA All Star Team has been announced and rookie
sensations Caitlin Clark and Angel Reyes headlined the team.
Speaker 6 (26:53):
They are the only first time All Stars in the group.
Speaker 5 (26:55):
Fan voting for this year's game skyrocketed compared to last year.
Clark finished with the most votes at just over seven
hundred thousand, while last year's leading vote getter, Agean Wilson
had less than ninety six thousand. So again on so
Caitlyn Clark finished with over seven hundred thousand votes. The
(27:15):
leading vote getter last year was less than ninety six thousand,
so that also doesn't amplify the Caitlyn Clark effect.
Speaker 6 (27:25):
People who like aren't believing in it are just haters.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
Hold on seven hundred thousand, ninety six last year, top Yeah.
Speaker 6 (27:34):
The leading vote getter.
Speaker 4 (27:35):
That is staggering. Yeah, I mean Caitlyn and Angel.
Speaker 6 (27:38):
Rees of letter like they have do.
Speaker 4 (27:39):
You know what, Angel, how many votes or no?
Speaker 6 (27:42):
I don't have that run?
Speaker 5 (27:43):
Interesting they But the other interesting part is the All
Star Team is going to be playing the US Olympic
team on the twentieth, just before they head to Peril.
So the All Star Team is playing the Olympic on
both probably, So this will be interesting to see if
Kitlyn Clark goes off, obviously because that was a big
(28:03):
conversation that she got snubbed, but so also exciting to
see the heated rivalry of Clark and Reese on the
same team, right, because that's going to be crazy.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
Yeah, So you want full disclosure, I mean I said
this on my podcast a couple of weeks ago. For
the first time in my life, Alex, in my life,
I voted for the WNBA's.
Speaker 6 (28:24):
For you I can never lost people though I've never
done that before.
Speaker 5 (28:26):
We're talking about w NBA in a blocks on national
TV that has never happened before. Kitlyn Clark, she is
changing the game. She is the chosen one and get
on board or just like stopping a hater.
Speaker 3 (28:38):
It was one of the show I think, like some
pop up was like vote on the WNBA for him.
Speaker 4 (28:42):
I was like, wow, okay, I'll es now.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
I did vote for Angel Reese and Clark and Wilson
the Star from Vegas. But I wanted to add, did
you see oh, somebody just sent me the votes here? Okay,
So Angel Reese got three hundred and eighty two thousand votes,
fifth highest total. Caitlin Clark obviously had seven hundred, so
not quite double Reese. Caitlin Clark's teammate ye Ileah Boston
(29:09):
got the second highest votes.
Speaker 6 (29:11):
And the team's getting all the eyeballs.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
I mean they were breaking They broke another record last
night the eighths and fever game.
Speaker 4 (29:16):
Had I watched some of that.
Speaker 5 (29:18):
Yeah, it was like the most attended w NBA game
since ninety nine.
Speaker 4 (29:22):
I mean, listen, this stuffs crazy. She's just a quick note.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
So recently Kateler Clark played Diana Tarassi the Fever played
whatever team tarrosse, a Mercury maybe.
Speaker 4 (29:33):
And it was weird.
Speaker 3 (29:35):
I watched some of the game that Kaitlin Clark is
getting like standing ovations, which she scores the whole crowd
in Phoenix, yes, Diana Tarossi's hometown.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
And then it came out that one of these websites
said it was.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
Like the most watched game of Diana Tarossi's career.
Speaker 4 (29:49):
And she's the one who came out with.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
A couple like, Oh well, Katelyn Clark's gonna get a
wake up call in the WNBA.
Speaker 4 (29:54):
These are professionals.
Speaker 5 (29:55):
I mean, she did, she did? She get the She's
a second way to call in terms of.
Speaker 6 (30:02):
Competition, no doubt, but she is. She is the chosen one.
Speaker 5 (30:06):
She is the reason they're having chartered flights this year,
that most of her games are nationally televised.
Speaker 6 (30:11):
She's selling out arenas.
Speaker 5 (30:12):
They're moving to bigger arenas just to be able to
get more fans in because they're selling out like that.
Speaker 4 (30:19):
And I totally get it.
Speaker 3 (30:20):
I get Diana Troossi's a legend. There's no question. It's
just funny that the little jabs in the tweaks that
these people are taking at Clark are now coming back. Oh,
Diana Trossi. Never before have so many people watched a
game you've played in and it has nothing to do
with you. It's all about that other girl on the
other side of the court that has to eat her
up inside that she's like a six time Olympian and
(30:42):
nothing she's done in her career can match what Caitlin
Clark's done for the league right now.
Speaker 4 (30:46):
Sorry, Diana Tarossi. Great player, a great career, no doubt.
Speaker 5 (30:49):
But you have to give credit to the women before
her who have created the game and the quality of
the game that there is. But it does take that
one person, that polarizing person, to do what Caitlin Clark is,
and she is that person.
Speaker 3 (31:02):
She is the chosen If the quality was that could,
wouldn't people have been paying attention before.
Speaker 5 (31:06):
Now people like to watch and root for someone that
they follow and see, and she became a sensation in
college right first time ever the women's March Madness Final
had higher viewership than the men. Caitlyn Clark she is
the reason that all of this is happening, and she
carried that into the WNBA.
Speaker 6 (31:26):
There was a question if she could and she one
thousand percent in.
Speaker 3 (31:29):
Yeah, Tarassie was on some great Yukon teams stacked. Nobody care.
I'm sorry, nobody cared. No audience. Now Caitlin Clark shows up.
Oh my gosh, sorry.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
I'm going in. I know, I got my Caitlyn Clark
the Hive. What are they called? The Bayhive?
Speaker 3 (31:45):
Beyonce has her crew, but Caitlyn Clark has a online
there's a lot of them she does.
Speaker 4 (31:52):
Anyways, Alex Curry with the news, Well that's.
Speaker 7 (31:55):
The news, and thanks for stopping by The.

Speaker 3 (32:43):
Back here on the Herd, let's welcome in Ryan Hollands,
ten year NBA veteran, to break down all the chaos
of free agency. Ryan Hollands, nice pool there in your backyard. Now, man,
how's free agency treating you so far?
Speaker 8 (33:00):
It's good, you know, no complaints on my end. I
think it's been exciting to see. There's been a lot
of movement so far, so I'm.
Speaker 7 (33:10):
Looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
Yeah, let's start with the death of the dynasty in
Golden State. Klay Thompson, Leeves, Chris Paul also left Warriors
kind of flailing here. Haven't done much to improve the team.
I don't just put the Clay era in perspective. I
know he wasn't amazing last season. Still, I think he
made the fourth most threes in the league. This is
still a loss for the Warriors, and you just wonder like,
(33:31):
are they about to go through some major drought here
given the aging roster, the young guy's not ready and
just kind of the feeling of it's over now that
Clay's gone.
Speaker 8 (33:43):
Yeah, I can definitely see a draft from the Warriors coming.
Klay Thompson, although he wasn't as productive as he has
been in the past, you had to guard him, you
had to hug him. You know, there's no help rule
when guarding Klay Thompson at the end of the day,
and those guys can find a way to compete and
win games now, you know, coming up short come playoff
time and not making a deep run. Those are the
(34:05):
expectations when you pay out the salary that you do
there and you're bringing a Chris Paul. You don't bring
in Chris Paul, you know, to to just barely make
the playoffs or the playing you bring him.
Speaker 7 (34:14):
Into, you know, win ball games.
Speaker 8 (34:16):
So obviously the Warriors are looking to move in a
different direction. The Botch trade with the Clippers not going
through that was a huge, huge loss and you know
what happens, you know, and the Lakers have seen this
in the past. The Warriors, because how good they are,
nobody wants to help them. Nobody was winning, you know,
the Clippers like, man, we're not sending you Paul George
so that you can retool and potentially win. And again
(34:39):
they're gonna have to find a way to make this
happen on their own. I'm intrigued to see what happens
with Steph Curry. You know how he's gonna go through
another year of you know, kind of his guys not
being ready, not having the weapons and assets around him.
Speaker 7 (34:52):
So I don't think Golden State's done dealing.
Speaker 8 (34:54):
There's probably a couple more moves that they may want
to make because obviously, when you have Steph Curry on
your roster, you have older Draymond Green, You're still gonna
be and win now mode. So Mike Denley is gonna
have his hands his work cut out for him.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
All right, Ryan, I gotta ask you who's a bigger
loser in the Klay Thompson free agency decision, Lebron because
Lebron didn't call him allegedly and try to recruit him,
or the Lakers who allegedly said we can offer you
four years eight email they didn't actually have the cap
space they would have had to make some moves.
Speaker 4 (35:25):
But can you pick one of those two or are
they kind of co joined?
Speaker 7 (35:31):
It's clearly the Lakers. Lebron is good.
Speaker 4 (35:33):
Yeah, is good?
Speaker 8 (35:35):
Man, Come on, man, his legacy said, he's in La,
his son is on the team.
Speaker 7 (35:41):
Life is good for Lebron. He's gonna figure out things.
You know, everybody you know serves this controversy about him.
It is who it is.
Speaker 8 (35:47):
But in terms of the Lakers, you know, you kind
of had a real legacy move there. You know, the
son of Michael Thompson grew up a Lakers fan. You know,
could have you know, made a move or had the
same money to stay there, but elected to go to Dallas.
That was a bit of a hit to the Lakers.
Speaker 7 (36:03):
You know, on top of hey now signing Danny Hurley.
Speaker 8 (36:05):
You know that when your organization that's that big, you know,
kind of swinging and missing that that's a tough.
Speaker 7 (36:11):
Pill to swallow.
Speaker 8 (36:11):
Now, at the end of the day, the Lakers are
gonna be okay, but you know you don't want to.
You know, when you offer a player, you offer a coach,
and those people decline and they're not comfortable and going
into whatever the situation may be for any reason. I'm
not pointing to Lebron or anybody. It's a knock. It's
a knock, and it's a it's a bit of a slab.
Speaker 3 (36:31):
Yeah, let's stick in the West for one more before
we get to Paul George. Nuggets lose KCP. We know
the Nuggets are gonna slide back a little bit. Okay,
we know the Warriors are coming back a little bit.
The Lakers haven't done anything. The Suns, I don't think
they've made a move. We're seeing a weird time in
the West, aren't we now, Ryan, it appears like OKC, Minnesota,
(36:53):
I don't know, Dallas.
Speaker 4 (36:54):
Are those the three best teams in the West?
Speaker 7 (36:58):
They are.
Speaker 8 (36:59):
I'm not gonna give up on the Nuggets. I felt
the Nuggets just weren't healthy enough. They were tired, you know,
really fatigue set in, so you can throw them in
Oklahoma City. I love the improvements that they made bringing
in Caruso and Hartenstein. They really just had to kind
of just you know, get some of those leaky, leaky
gaps and fill them up. So I do like what
(37:20):
the thunder moving forward, but they have to show me
that they're old enough, their experience enough to go out
and win a playoff season, continue to move forward.
Speaker 7 (37:28):
So I think the West is wide open because Jason, what.
Speaker 8 (37:31):
We're seeing is because of technology, advancements in technology.
Speaker 7 (37:35):
The older stars are still playing.
Speaker 8 (37:37):
At a very, very high level, but they cannot play
at the same pace that they used to in the past.
And when you got these young Anthony Edwards and Lucas
that are continuing to ascend. So there's a changing of
the guard there again, that's how we talked. We spoke
about this.
Speaker 7 (37:52):
What no Lebron, no Curry, no Durant. Those are huge
changes in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (37:58):
All right, let's go to the East where the Pictures
won allegedly the Paul George sweet sakes.
Speaker 4 (38:03):
I don't think there was any other competitors.
Speaker 8 (38:04):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
It just feels like the Big three era is over
throughout the league. The Bucks have a Big three, they
couldn't do anything. Sons have a Big three. Nothing for them.
It almost feels like the ship has sailed due to
the whole punitive tax situation in the second Apron.
Speaker 4 (38:20):
I don't know, is this big three gonna work in Philly?
Speaker 7 (38:25):
I think that the question would be health.
Speaker 8 (38:29):
You know, whenever you have Joel Embiid healthy, you have
a chance to win. He's that darn good. But if
he's not healthy, Paul George is missing. We're gonna be
singing the same song that we were with Paul George
in LA. But in all reality, what you get is
that third option to work. Tobias Harris is great in
catch and shoot opportunities. We're can go posting up a mismatch,
(38:50):
Paul George can put the ball on the floor and
makes plays.
Speaker 7 (38:53):
I really think they have a star Naxi man, the
kid his box office. He gets to the rim.
Speaker 8 (38:58):
He's downhill and we all thought that when James Harden left,
you know, Philly would be missing a beat, and they
didn't miss too much. With Maxi stepping into the road,
he really has taken strides. But Paul George puts them
right there in contention. It's really just a matter of
them being healthy and the depth. And when we talk
about big threes, you know, normally.
Speaker 7 (39:17):
I like to argue with you, mix it up a
little bit.
Speaker 8 (39:20):
But at the end of the day, I think what
Boston has showed up showed us and we always have
to glean for the champions is their depth.
Speaker 7 (39:26):
One out.
Speaker 8 (39:27):
You know where the Nuggets looked tired, where Milwaukee was
injured and tired, where all these stars were getting run
to the ground. Facon Tatum and Jaylen Brown got rest.
Derrick White, those guys got rest. They were not tired.
And when they were needed the most, Drew Holiday got rest.
They weren't playing forty minutes atnight. You know, this wasn't
(39:48):
New York Knick basketball, even though New York had a
heck of the season. It was their depth that went
out to the answer you, I think you need a
big two at least, but you gotta be deep. And
hey man, hell, it's gonna be hard to argue that
Derek White doesn't make that a big three.
Speaker 7 (40:05):
He's a dog man, He's a dog.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
Last question, we got a minute left.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
Does this put these sixers on par with the Knicks
and Celtics in the Eastern No, of course it.
Speaker 8 (40:17):
Does, no doubt, no doubt because Paul George feels a
gap that Philly hadn't had in a very long time.
He's one of the better three and D players in
the league. He can go and create his own shot.
He's clutched when needed.
Speaker 7 (40:28):
But you have Joel and Beid.
Speaker 8 (40:30):
So it's a piece around Joel Embiid. We talked about
the Warriors a little while ago. Philly's in a win
now situation. When you had that type of talent, you
cannot wait until tomorrow to stack your roster.
Speaker 7 (40:41):
And Philly did a great job in the offseason.
Speaker 8 (40:43):
I give it an a plus New Paul George was
highly sought out eight plus.
Speaker 3 (40:47):
Okay, all right, Ryan Hollins catch him on Fox Sports
Radios Sundays, nine am to noon Eastern good stuff. As always,
Ryan enjoyed the July fourth festivities. My man had man
see you, sir, Oh boy, he loves him. So Joel Embiid,
So let's see Alex. Joel Embiid has partnered up with
Jimmy Butler, James Harden, Ben Simmons can't get to the
(41:07):
conference finals, and we love Joel Embiid.
Speaker 6 (41:09):
Okay, yeah, may you call George is the missing piece?
Speaker 4 (41:14):
Wow? That's kind of off. You never know, George the
missing piece?
Speaker 6 (41:18):
You never know?
Speaker 4 (41:19):
Wasn't that the claim in Okay, see didn't quite pan out?
Speaker 8 (41:22):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (41:22):
Wasn't that the claim in the Clippers? Oh yeahd also
did not pin out. Just kidding around, all right, coming
up next hour.
Speaker 4 (41:28):
US soccer. Are we close? Are we close?
Speaker 3 (41:31):
Alexi Lala stopped by to help us sift through the ruppage.
