Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Here we go our number two on The Herd.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
It's me Jason McIntyre in for Colin Cowherd. Yeah, he's
still on vacation. He did check in with me yesterday.
He's riding his bike and working out a lot.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
I don't know, Alex. People do on vacations, right, Yeah,
I mean good for him. I love that.

Speaker 5 (00:45):
I feel like everyone's on vacation right now too, Like
you no traffic, get in to work today, like all week.
I'm like, oh, fourth of July tomorrow, everyone's on break
befourth of July.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
Cowherd did tell me he had a I think an
NFL siting Christian.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
McCaffrey was like, he got married. Oh McAffrey got married. Yeah,
they got married.

Speaker 5 (01:03):
Yeah, and so that's some probably Cowhard Sam somewhere and
was like, oh, look at you hanging out with Kyler Murray,
Jamal Murray, Christian McCaffrey.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
Yeah, Cowhard's a big deal, you know. And here we
are just, you know, grinding away in the salt mines.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
Yeah, Alex, all right, listen, I gotta be careful what
I say here because I get very fired up about
USA soccer. Unknown fact, maybe it's known. Soccer was my
number one sport growing up. I was pretty damn good,
and then of course everybody hit puberty and I was
like a late bloomer and I was getting pushed off
the ball. Is super frustrating. I still remember the end
of my youth soccer career. We were on a club

(01:38):
team state state tournament and we went to PK's and
I missed my pk Uh. It wasn't the reason we lost.
We lost in p K's and it was just dispiriting.
Sitting there at mid fielding, I was like, damn, is
this it for me? You know, you can see the.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Young guys coming up, but it's just disappointing. But I
love soccer.

Speaker 4 (01:54):
My dad's side of the family, where he's from in Dominica,
his dad was like a soccer legend. He's been writen
about Hi books his brother also, so like soccer is
in my blood.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
I love soccer.

Speaker 4 (02:04):
You guys know, I'm a minority owner in a soccer
team in Mexico, Nakoxa.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Our season starts up here shortly.

Speaker 4 (02:10):
I'm a big soccer guy, so I pushed for Alexi
Lalas to come on the show. He's gonna be here shortly.
Daniel Sturage should be on tomorrow or Friday.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Listen. I'm a soccer guy. I'm enjoying the Euros. I
enjoyed Copa America so far.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
That being said, what a disappointment for the US losing
to Uruguay one zero. I know the goal, maybe he
was off sides, blah blah blah whatever. I'm not gonna
get into the minutia of that. I think we have
to look big picture at USA Soccer, and I'll start here.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Number One, we got knocked out by Netherlands in the
knockout rounds in the World.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
Cup in December of twenty twenty two. Are we better
now than we were then? It's a very easy, basic question.
Are we better now than we were then? And unequivocally
the answer has to be no. We're not okay at
the World Cup. We had an unfortunate draw with Wales.
We should have beat him, gave up a late goal.

(03:05):
We drew England which was a great result, and then
we beat Iran in a close, tense game, and then
we got beat by the Netherlands, which is a damn
good team. It was a solid showing coming into COPA.
We're supposed to build on that. We got our Golden Generation,
which is what they call it. There's some debate over
whether they're in the Golden or silver I'm not going
to get into that, but we were supposed to maybe

(03:28):
make the semi finals of COPA better certainly a better
showing than getting knocked out early. And I think based
on that alone, you have to say, given the statement
US Soccer put out, we're gonna analyze what happened to COPA.
The obvious read between the lines is, hey, we're going
to kick the tires on some big name coaches and
if we can bring one into replace Burholter, we will.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
If not, we're just gonna ride with Burholter.

Speaker 4 (03:51):
That was my read of it, okay, and I think
that's a fair read. You could counter the Burholter defenders.
Colin's been one of them.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Hey, well, if.

Speaker 4 (04:01):
Tim Waya doesn't get a red card against Panama, a
dopey red card for shoving a guy in the head.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Again, it was real stupid. We beat Panama.

Speaker 4 (04:09):
We're not losing that game, folks. Sorry, okay, we're not
We're not losing to them. We would beat Panama and
we'd advance. And this is mostly a non story, but
that's not what happened. We didn't rise to the occasion.
You could question Burhalter subs in the Panama game, going
defense late instead of pushing for a goal, and we
give up a give up a goal, which which was terrible.

(04:30):
And then against Uruguay, you know you're supposed to keep
a cool head and tense moment. Okay, houses on fire,
there's no point in panicky, You've got to slap someone
in the face.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
Wake up. We got to get out of here.

Speaker 6 (04:42):
What do we do?

Speaker 4 (04:43):
And I didn't see that from the US against Uruguay.
I didn't see that urgency. I saw a team kind
of sort of reeling and kind of sort of getting
ticked off with the referee and dare I say, losing
their minds, including Christian Polistic.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Now he had very valid reasons.

Speaker 4 (04:58):
But after the game, here's what Alexi Lalas had to
say about the US losing to Uruguay and getting knocked
out of Copa America.

Speaker 6 (05:06):
They talked about learning from losing. Okay, I think what
we have learned over these cycles is that this team
is not able to do anything better than is done.

Speaker 7 (05:16):
In the past.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
That that hurts.

Speaker 7 (05:19):
That hurts to say.

Speaker 6 (05:20):
If this is as good as it gets, it's.

Speaker 7 (05:24):
Not good enough.

Speaker 6 (05:25):
And there's plenty of excuses, but they don't matter.

Speaker 8 (05:28):
You know.

Speaker 6 (05:29):
You can talk about opportunities, Well, we have players that
are playing all over the world. Talk about playing in Europe. Well,
the entire team that you saw out there plays in Europe.
So it's not MLS's fault. You can talk about, you know,
the pathways and the resources that they have. No generation
has been given more and yet this generation hasn't lived
up to that bargain.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
Okay, very valid points, tough to refute any of that.
I got two final points to make here. Number One,
Morocco made the World Cup semifinals in twenty twenty two. Morocco,
a country of I think thirty seven ish million people,
They made the World Cup semifinals.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
They hadn't been out of the group stage since let.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
Me look it up, nineteen eighty six, and they made
the semifinals.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
Don't give me this.

Speaker 4 (06:21):
We can't make the semifinals or the World Cup in
twenty twenty six.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
I don't want to hear it.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
I don't want to hear we can't compete with freakin Morocco,
which has no history of soccer, can make the semifinals.
So don't give me that we can't make the semifinals.
That's not a reasonable ask. Quarterfinals. Come on, we can
we can do this, all right. And the second point
is again a little big picture here, but I want
to take you guys back to the beginning of the

(06:45):
Golden State Warriors dynasty.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
They had a coach named.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
Mark Jackson, and he was a former point guard for
the Knicks. He's very good and Mark Jackson, listen, he
had this splash Brothers thing.

Speaker 8 (06:56):
Roll it.

Speaker 4 (06:57):
They make the playoffs, I'm fairly and they upset I
think it was the Spurs, and they.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Make the second round. Everybody's all excited.

Speaker 4 (07:04):
The next year they lose in the first round in
seven I'm almost certain to the paper clips, and it
was like, damn, this team's close. This team is close
to a breakthrough. So they move on from Mark Jackson.
They bring in Steve Kerr, who I'm fairly certain was
doing TV at the time, had been in the front office.
Steve Kerr comes on the bench for the Warriors, and

(07:26):
in his first year, the starting center, David Lee was
hurt early. I think it was in preseason hamstring issue.
Steve Kerr makes one minor tweak. He inserts Draymond Green
into the starting lineup. Oh my gosh, he unlocked a beast,
and the Warriors death lineup was born. Iguodala starts and

(07:48):
oh my gosh, here's the dynasty.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
One small tweak.

Speaker 4 (07:51):
Now, it was fortuitous the Lee got hurt because Lee
was like a two time All Star. But once he
got injured, Kerr made one small tweak, puts in Draymond
Green at center, and everything. They changed the way the
NBA was played with one move. Okay, now, look at
USA soccer. I don't know that there is one small
move to be made, but I can say this with

(08:14):
some certainty. You gotta damn well try because what you're
doing now is not working. It's just not It was
a disappointing showing anyway slice it and I came on
here after the Bolivia Too Nothing win.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
I said, guys, you know I know that to Nothing
went sure, great, okay, we got the result. They didn't
look amazing, and then it you know of Panama, they
give up a goal and then the red car and
it's just like and against Uraguay. I mean, we didn't
score in the final.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
I don't know what, like eighty minutes, sorry, it would
be ninety minutes against Oguai, no goals. And then we
didn't score in at least the final seventy minutes against Panama.
And I know who they had in power play whatever
you want to say, up a man, where's the urgency?
There has to be one small move or two that
can be made, whether it's a formation, a player, a personality,

(09:02):
some dynamic in the locker room.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
We're close.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
I'm just I firmly believe we are close. And you
guys can laugh and scoff. And we had a smart
producer stand up in the meeting and say, listen, I've
been playing soccer, I've been following soccer.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
I've been hearing this work close nonsense forever, Jay.

Speaker 4 (09:17):
And I get that I've been hearing the same damn thing.
I'm an optimist when it comes to soccer. I do
believe they're on the cusp of something.

Speaker 9 (09:25):
Now.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
I did see during the commercial break, I went online.
I saw Tim.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Howard wrote this big member, the Tim Howard, the great goalie,
wrote this amazing piece in the Daily Mail. I would
just go over and hire Jurgen Klop, you know, legendary
soccer coach.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
I would.

Speaker 4 (09:40):
I think I could deliver Jurgen Clop And it's like, okay, wonderful.
That would be a great get. And someone in the
meeting said, what we we should have got the Canada
coach Jesse Marsh. He's like the real life Ted Latso
and Canada now advanced out of the group stage at
COPA after a terrible showing at the World Cup. And
I know some of it is matchups and blah blah blah.
I'm really into this, guys, and I'm just telling you

(10:02):
I would try my best to move on from Burholter.
If you remember, during the World Cup there was the
geo rain of Burholter think and I came on and
I reported some stuff that I had heard, and it
became a big story and it was largely accurate. And
I'm just telling you now I went back to that
same source and he's saying he doesn't think Burholter is
going anywhere, which is not great for me. All right,

(10:23):
coming up next here, Oh no, wait, we have a
one more piece of sound. I want to play you
Alexi Laws, who's going to join the show in about
five minutes. Here he is on Burholter's status. I'm willing
to run out Burholter.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Here's Lawless.

Speaker 6 (10:36):
This is not good enough from Greg Burholter. And you
have to ask yourself. With twenty twenty six coming barreling
down the pike, it's gonna come really a few years away,
all right. We can't afford to waste it. We can't
afford to be embarrassed, and we can't afford to arrive
in the summer of twenty six with a team that
has not progressed, that is not involved, and is not improved.
And I'm sure if Greg Burholter was here, he would say, oh,
but you don't see what's happening inside. I don't give

(10:58):
a crap what is happening inside. I don't care about
the dynamic. I don't care how much your players love you.
I don't care how Kumbai it is. All I care
about is I see a US men's national team that
is better than before and we haven't seen that, and
that's a problem going forward.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
M all right, Well, coming up next we will ask
Lalas about.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
This, also his take on you know, some of the
guys he played with, are they better than this alleged
Golden generation. All that's next year on the Herd.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and neon eastern nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
Back here on the Herd, Jason McIntyre in for Colin
Cowherd Special guests joining us now to break down the
USA struggles at Copa America.

Speaker 3 (11:44):
Let's welcome back.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
Alexi Lalas, American soccer legend who's on the great World
Cup team in the nineties.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
Team, sorry, in the nineties, Alexi, How you doing, my man?

Speaker 7 (11:56):
I'm good.

Speaker 6 (11:56):
Yeah, that was back in the previous century, back in
the nineteen high So a lot has changed, or maybe
it hasn't. I don't know.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
I don't listen, everybody saw your passionate.

Speaker 4 (12:08):
I don't know if they're called rants or just opinions
after the US loss to Uruguay.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
I don't know. I don't want to.

Speaker 4 (12:14):
Go overboard here, but do you are you of the
belief that right now US Soccer is not so much
doing a review of Copa America we all saw what happened,
but rather kicking the tires on potential coaches to see
if they can actually land a big fish.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (12:28):
And I think if twenty twenty six, the World Cup
in two years wasn't coming barreling down the pike, you know,
as I said, it might be a different type of situation.
But this is an incredible opportunity and the necessity to
harness twenty twenty six cannot be overstated. And so you
have to have all guns blazing come twenty twenty six,

(12:49):
both on and off the field, in order to, like
I said, maximize this opportunity. And so this is the
last time this summer that we were going to see
this group in a competitive environment again elite teams, and
that's just the reality of the next couple of years, unfortunately.

Speaker 7 (13:04):
And so this was where the rubber meets the road.

Speaker 6 (13:07):
This was where Greg Burholter was going to be assessed
and where this team was going to be assessed, and
let's be honest, Initially the conversation was, you get out
of the group and then we're going to face a
Columbia or Brazil, and that's really where we're going to
assess what this team and this coach is.

Speaker 7 (13:21):
We didn't even get that far and we didn't even
get out of the group.

Speaker 6 (13:23):
So it was an unmitigated disaster and a failure in
the moment, and especially as it relates to twenty twenty six,
because it does not fill me with confidence and hope
and positivity, nor inspire me that the next couple of
years is going to be this incredible positive juggernaut towards something.

Speaker 7 (13:41):
Specially in twenty twenty six.

Speaker 4 (13:43):
Are you of the belief that maybe, you know, first
comes the struggle, then the success, and we had to
have the dumb tim way of foul. We had to
have that read maybe this is what we need so
that the change comes. Otherwise, like you said, we advance
of the knockouts, Columbia, didn't they spank us recently five
to one or something like we get drugged by Columbia
or Brazil and it's like, okay, we'll keep Burholter we
got to the knockout. Maybe this is what had to

(14:05):
happen for the change to happen.

Speaker 7 (14:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (14:09):
Maybe, And so you know, I think there's a lot
of people that look at it like that. You know,
Greg Burholter's and you know, even leading up to this game,
was talking about the lessons that this team has learned
through losing.

Speaker 7 (14:19):
And that's absolutely the case in life and sports. I
get that.

Speaker 6 (14:23):
But the whole point of learning lessons through losing is
that you stop losing or you lose less. And I
think that's where the real problem is right now.

Speaker 7 (14:32):
Now.

Speaker 6 (14:32):
If this ultimate failure is what changes everything and leads
to a better situation going into twenty twenty six, by
the way, whether that's with or without Greg Burholter, then
certainly maybe we can look back and say it was
a step back in order to take two steps forward.
But we've done that a lot over the last couple
of years. And relative to Greg Burholter, you know, for
your viewers and listeners, here just a reminder, Greg Burholter

(14:56):
has been given multiple bites at the apples, all right.
He has been given multiple cycles that even in of
itself in international soccer, is unique. And we know what
happened after the World Cup in twenty twenty two, and
the United States Soccer Federation went and reassessed and just said,
you know, okay, we're.

Speaker 7 (15:13):
Going to continue on. And you know, I don't.

Speaker 6 (15:16):
Believe in multiple cycles for any national team coach, whether
it's whether it's good or bad, whether you're winning or losing.
I just think that it gets stale. But since you know,
you know, because people have asked me, now, well you
supported Greg Burholter. Well, what happened was after the World
Cup in twenty twenty two. You know, I it seemed

(15:37):
that the United States Soccer Federation was going to rehire
Greg Burholter, and then all the craziness came out off
the field. And I didn't think that, you know, he,
or by the way, anybody else should have been punished
or penalized or denied that opportunity because of the vindictive
actions of others that had nothing to.

Speaker 7 (15:54):
Do with soccer.

Speaker 6 (15:55):
And I really came in from a principal perspective, and
maybe that's my fault. Maybe I should have been much
more ruthless and pragmatic relative to that assessment. But we
find ourselves here, and there is an opportunity to make
a change if the United States Soccer Federation feels that
is appropriate now, and they have to do everything and
everything to make sure that they assure that we have
the best possible chance of success come the summer of

(16:17):
twenty twenty six.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
All right, So tell me what's it like to get
that voice change in the locker room.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
You were on the US team in the nineties.

Speaker 4 (16:23):
I think you guys went through Sampson, miltonovic I hope
I didn't Butcher's.

Speaker 7 (16:28):
Name, but like Bora, we went through a bunch of
different codes.

Speaker 3 (16:30):
Yes, how much does that voice change?

Speaker 4 (16:32):
Can there be a seismic shift in philosophy formation? Can
that be truncated into twenty months Alexi? Or is that
too much to ask anyone? So?

Speaker 6 (16:42):
First off, there's not a Landonnovan or a Clint Dempsey
coming through that door.

Speaker 7 (16:46):
The players are who they are.

Speaker 6 (16:48):
You might get a couple of different players here, but
not fundamentally changing the outlook of this team. So what
you're trying to find, if you are going to make
a change, is somebody that is going to do better
with what you already have. You know this, I mean,
you talk about sports all day, this applies to all
different sports. You will get inevitably the new coach type
of bounce if you make a change, but that only
lasts so long and keep them. Keep in mind that

(17:10):
this group has been adamant and very public about their
support of Greg Berholtz or as a matter of fact,
when that whole coaching search happened after the World Cup,
they obviously talked to players and by all accounts, they
were incredibly supportive and have been for a long time.
So you get that initial bounce. But but what I

(17:30):
would be looking for if they are going to make
a change, like I said, is somebody that's going to
inspire me. I don't want to be grouchy. I don't
want to be pessimistic. I don't want to be cynical
over the next two years, because that's not what this
was was build at nor that's.

Speaker 7 (17:45):
Not That's not what it should be. We should be excited.

Speaker 6 (17:48):
This is the most important summer in American soccer history,
and we should be doing everything, like I said, to
maximize it on and off the field. And so I
want somebody that's a bigger than life personality. I want
somebody that is going to going to champion, American Soccer champion,
this team leading up to the most important moment in
the summer of twenty twenty six. I want somebody that's
out there. I want somebody that's barnstorming. I want somebody

(18:11):
that when I leave an interview, or when I see
that person on the sideline, or obviously when I see
that team playing on the field, is inspiring and makes
me believe that this team is worth my time, that
this team is worth my heart, that this team is
worth believing in.

Speaker 4 (18:27):
I'll ask because you know, I'm sure people are going
to ask you. But we've seen Steve Kirk come from
the booth to coach, which ow jj Reddick was an announcer.
He's now coaching the Lakers. We've seen John Gruden in
the NFL on down the line of folks coming from
media and going into head coaching. Alexi, if the US
came to you and said, Lawless, we want you as
our guy, do you how do you respond?

Speaker 6 (18:50):
You know what We're in the political season right now,
and I don't know if you're following it, but there's
a lot of you know, questions about vps and stuff
like that, and inevitably politicians when they get asked these questions,
they go, Oh, I'm just whatever's good for the party,
and it's good for the country, and you know, blah
blah blah blah. If the United States Soccer Federation came
to me and asked me to coach this team, I
would do it in a second out of a sense

(19:10):
of responsibility, and yeah, out of a sense of confidence,
maybe even bordering on arrogance in terms of what I
feel that we could do with this group here. So
I'm not going to do the politician thing. Hell yeah,
they should be so lucky to have someone like me
leading this team.

Speaker 3 (19:25):
Ah, love it all right, Let's let.

Speaker 4 (19:27):
Macro for Copra America. Brazil has not looked incredible. I
thought Columbia was very impressive yesterday. Who's your pick to
come out of Copa America and win it all?

Speaker 6 (19:37):
I mean, look, you're safe money right now is Argentina.
And Argentina with Messi, by the way, in his new
backyard defending his Copa America title and maybe a prelude
to defending his World Cup championship and title in two
years again in his backyard in twenty twenty six, so
that you know they have a really easy pathway to

(19:57):
the final, and the other side it gets a little
bit more interest being complicated with Columbia, Brazil and Uruguay.
A lot of people think that Uruguay is the cream
of the crop, even better than Argentina right now, but
you know it's Brazil and they can be.

Speaker 7 (20:10):
Sneaky good coming through.

Speaker 6 (20:11):
But they're gonna have to play They're gonna have to
play Colombia, and that's gonna be a really really interesting matchup.

Speaker 4 (20:16):
And quickly on the Euros which come back in to
play Friday, amazing matchup Spain, Germany England and listen, the
Jude Bellingham goal in what's ninety fifth minute was incredible.
One of those moments where you're at a restaurant and
you don't know who's watching soccer, and all of a sudden,
this roar goes up from random people like, oh my gosh,
your thoughts on Spain, Germany and then England.

Speaker 7 (20:38):
So and I picked Germany as the host team.

Speaker 6 (20:40):
I think they just are rising to the occasion and
there's something special about a host team, especially a hosting
that's like Germany going to the finals.

Speaker 7 (20:46):
So I got them, but.

Speaker 6 (20:47):
Like you said, just a scrumptious matchup, if you will,
and talk about an easy path. If it's coming home,
it's because of the easy path that England has right now.
But never underestimate the ability for England to screw up
a good thing. So we'll see, we'll see if that
happens over there on that other side. But yeah, I'm
picking Germany all the way through to the final and
winning the final in Germany.

Speaker 3 (21:06):
And Christiano Ronaldo missed the penalty kick.

Speaker 4 (21:08):
I'm sure you did a little victory lap, given you
your takes on it.

Speaker 10 (21:12):
I mean, there's no crying in baseball, but there's also
there's no crying in soccer in the middle of the game.
I mean, look, I, as the kids say, or maybe
they used to say, I stand for Christiano Ronaldo as
a matter of fact, I will defend him relative to MESSI.

Speaker 7 (21:24):
But come on, my man.

Speaker 10 (21:25):
He started crying on the field in the middle.

Speaker 7 (21:27):
Of the game.

Speaker 10 (21:28):
All right, maybe at the end of the game or
something like that, but come on, You're you're like a superhero.

Speaker 7 (21:33):
I don't want my superhero crying. That's ridiculous.

Speaker 4 (21:36):
I can't disagree with anything. Alexi lalas Fox Sports. You'll
see him all over our soccer coverage. Great stuff as usual, Alexi,
and hey, keep your phone nearby, and Kate US Soccer
calls you.

Speaker 7 (21:49):
They should be so lucky. It's always a pleasure to
talk to you. Onwarding upward, my friend, this too, she'll.

Speaker 4 (21:53):
Pass Alexi Lala's great stuff as always. Let's go to
Alex Curry with the news.

Speaker 3 (22:00):
Turn on the news.

Speaker 2 (22:02):
This is the herd Line news.

Speaker 5 (22:04):
Well, Jay Mike, let's start in the NBA. Because Clay
Thompson chose to leave the Warriors in free agency and
join the Mavericks on a three year, fifty million dollar deal.
It's the end of an era in Golden State, but
it seems like Clay had made peace with the reality
that he was on his way out. He reportedly told
Steph Curry not to use his organizational pull to pressure
the Warriors into keeping him this offseason.

Speaker 6 (22:25):
Now.

Speaker 5 (22:25):
We also heard Draymond Green share on his podcast that
he had called him the week before and they were
just kind of reminiscing on all the good times that
they had together, and Draymond said he just kind of
was listening and felt that he had kind of come
to peace with this decision that he was on his
way out, and it looks like Clay is still trying

(22:47):
to go for championships and he believes that the MAVs
was the best opportunity in place for him to do that.

Speaker 3 (22:54):
They were just in the finals.

Speaker 6 (22:57):
It's just.

Speaker 5 (22:59):
There are a lot of reasons and good storylines pulling
Klay Thompson to the Lakers.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
Obviously, his dad.

Speaker 5 (23:07):
Being a big one, winning a bunch of championships with
the Lakers. He always I guess his dad's shared that
he told he told him that if he wasn't a Warrior,
that he always saw himself as a Lakers prior too.
So that says a lot right there that he believes
that MAVs are a win now team obviously over the Lakers,

(23:29):
but just end of an era. And it was you know,
the Warriors and fans handled it as glassy as they could,
just remembering the good old days, the dynasty. I mean,
he was he was a huge part of that.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
Yeah, as a South Bay person, I'm sure you're happy
to see that.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
And this is all it had to hurt the Lakers.

Speaker 4 (23:47):
The MAVs came into enemy territory for most of each
because we know Clay's living there all summer and essentially
sold him at a restaurant.

Speaker 3 (23:58):
You know, Cuban has a place. Yeah, yeah, I mean
it's like the MAVs came into Laker territory. I mean
Formosa as a place from El Segundo, the Lakers trading facility,
and they stole Clay like that was kind of a
gangster move. I haven't given the MAVs props for that,
but that was impressive. Yeah, there's a lot of new

(24:22):
with the Lakers.

Speaker 5 (24:23):
Obviously, JJ Reddick first time coach, very close to Lebron
Lebron James still a great player towards the end part
of his career. Obviously gets his son on the team.

Speaker 3 (24:37):
And then the other option is what a team that
was just in the finals? Yeah, Lakers. Lakers haven't been
there but since the Bubble.

Speaker 5 (24:44):
The Bubble Championship twenty was their last great conference finals
of years ago.

Speaker 3 (24:47):
But you know, you're right, it's tough to hammer Clay
for that.

Speaker 4 (24:51):
I'll just say I've got something in the holster for
Draymond Green, who's out here.

Speaker 3 (24:55):
Oh we were reminucing listen.

Speaker 4 (24:58):
Draymond is the one who's started the beginning of this
end of dynasty. When he punched out Jordan Poole left
winning the championship.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
That's the reason they are where they are right now.

Speaker 4 (25:07):
And I've got I've got it all written out, all
the numbers, Draymond Green, you could say whatever you want
on your pod, and I know you're tight with Colin
just saying, Man, that punch to Jordan Poole really ended
the dynasty. It's been all Alex all downhill from there,
one bad decision after another public drama.

Speaker 5 (25:24):
Right, you don't want to air out what's happening in
the locker room. As we were just talking with the
Cowboys and my gun, it's just keep it behind closed doors.
Once it gets out, or if it's like a publicly
seen event like the punch and it gets caught on camera,
then yeah, that's everyone knows and everyone's going to talk
about it and then tensions are going to get high.

(25:45):
But it was really fun while it lasted. They had
a goods fun. Yeah, Okay, let's move to the NFL.
The start of Jordan Love's first full season as the
Packers started was a little rocky, but he turned things
around in the second half with a playoff Berth and
a huge win over the Cowboys. Now once again, Green
Bay seems to have found their quarterback of the future
and new Packers Josh Jacob said he thinks that Love

(26:05):
is on track to be a superstar.

Speaker 9 (26:09):
To me, I mean, just from what I see, he
has all the traits and all the tools to be
a superstar in this league. I think that, you know,
as he keeps continue to play and get experience, and
you know, grow confidence and more and become more confident
in his abilities and what he can do, He's gonna
be the next superstar in this league.

Speaker 5 (26:28):
So, I mean, we even saw that in his first
full year last year, when he started off three and
five in his first eight games and then went seven
and four in his last eleven. His passer rating went
from an eighty one point nine in those first eight
games to a one oh seven point.

Speaker 3 (26:43):
Eight in his last eleven. And the thing is like
he is in line to.

Speaker 5 (26:47):
Get that next big quarterback deal. And the thing with teams,
if you found your franchise guy, you are going to
have to pay a franchise quarterback eventually. So if you
believe he is your guy and the future in Green Bay,
pay him sooner than later, because the price sad is
only gonna keep going out.

Speaker 3 (27:06):
I love this. So Josh Jacobs was with the Raiders
last year.

Speaker 4 (27:10):
Right, He's been with the Packers for like seven minutes,
and he already sees that Jordan Love's going to be
a super I just love this from and oh, by
the way, I had to look this up.

Speaker 3 (27:20):
Jordan Love faced the Raiders last year. He was awful.
One of his worst games of the season. Is it
in first game? I'm not sure, but it was a
night game. He was terrible. Okay, So Josh Jacobs has
seen Jordan Love.

Speaker 4 (27:30):
He was across the field watching him. And oh, by
the way, now I've seen mcam.

Speaker 3 (27:34):
He's gonna be a superstar. It's just it's silly. See.

Speaker 5 (27:37):
Well, he kind of had the tail of two seasons.
We had the graphic up just a second ago where
he really struggled and was rocky out of.

Speaker 4 (27:44):
The gates in his first five So which is the
real Jordan Love?

Speaker 3 (27:47):
I would say last eleven.

Speaker 5 (27:49):
Once you start getting comfortable with your first full season
in the NFL, there's going to be some growing teams.

Speaker 3 (27:53):
He's sat behind Aaron Rodgers for years.

Speaker 4 (27:55):
I like how you're positive he was on the scene
for three years.

Speaker 3 (28:00):
Yeah, they knew what they had. After three years of preparation,
comes out Aaron Rodgers and basically for eight games he
did know.

Speaker 5 (28:08):
It takes it takes a moment to get ready here.
Maybe you think Cowboys in the Wildcard game that was
huge and Cowboys were coming off Dak was coming off
an MVP caliber Seeds to beat themselves.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
They were awful.

Speaker 4 (28:22):
But listen, Love delivered. I know I'm not a hater.
I like, I just don't love him as much as
Alex and Colin.

Speaker 3 (28:29):
I just saying, if you believe he is your guy,
you're eventually going to have to pay him.

Speaker 5 (28:34):
And the market as we were just talking about across
all right now just going up m.

Speaker 3 (28:42):
How many years? Like it again too?

Speaker 5 (28:45):
Like Jordan probably like, do you want to like retest
the market again, maybe get a shorter length deal.

Speaker 3 (28:51):
I don't think. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (28:53):
I mean, I don't know if he's better than Tua,
Like Tua lies a larger sample size of being good.
I know he's at the injuries. I just it's I
think it's a Is it okay to say I don't know? Yes,
I don't know if Jordan Love is gonna be great yeah, superstar,
I can tell you I definitely.

Speaker 3 (29:09):
Don't know that.

Speaker 5 (29:11):
I don't I don't know if anyone knows that yet.
But there is a like a hope and a belief.
Maybe that's why contract hasn't been done yet.

Speaker 7 (29:18):
That's fair.

Speaker 5 (29:18):
Yeah, Okay, Well, let's a swift to the Giants who
committed to Daniel Jones with a huge contract extension last year,
but those they're still waiting for that deal to pay off.
On Hard Knocks off Season last night, Giants GM Joe
Shane said that the plan all along was to give
Jones a couple of years, but now this year for Daniel,
this is the year for him. They need to decide
if he is the Giants' future or if they have

(29:40):
to pivot and find someone else. Now, they made that
decision last year when you chose to pay him over
Saquon Barkley, and then you lost your.

Speaker 3 (29:49):
Best player in Saquon Barkley.

Speaker 5 (29:51):
The thing is, we already really like we know who
Daniel Jones is. Two years ago he played great, went
nine and six. That's when they won their first playoff
game since their Super Bowl when in twenty eleven.

Speaker 3 (30:04):
But before he got injured last year.

Speaker 5 (30:07):
He went one in five, played in six games, only
had two passing touchdowns with six interceptions and a passer
rating of seventy point five in.

Speaker 3 (30:16):
Those six games. Like, we just I think they jumped
the gun a little bit.

Speaker 5 (30:21):
Maybe his contract was a reaction to the season two
years ago and just so happy that they won a
playoff game again.

Speaker 3 (30:28):
But no, last year was also a proven year.

Speaker 4 (30:31):
Okay, you saw Moneyball obviously, right, yes, okay, So there
was a scene where the guy who ended up playing
the he was into Jurassic Park movies.

Speaker 3 (30:40):
He's like kind of a hunky dude. What's his name's
spacing on it? Chris Pratt.

Speaker 4 (30:45):
So, Chris Pratt's playing Scott Haddiberg who cannot feel ground
bowls sunky and he's in the kitchen, asked sick. Kimber
By said empy, And David Justice or the actor playing Justice,
comes over. He's like, oh, what's your biggest Feory's like
a ball being hit directly at me.

Speaker 8 (30:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (30:58):
He's like, Okay, that's what this feels like. This is
the year, Daniel. You got this, Daniel Jones, Come on, buddy,
you got this. This is your year, pal. And he
knows Daniel Jones. He looks spooped in the pocket, he's terrified.
He's a fumble machine, horrible reads. Go watch that Seattle
gig wait. I was like, is this the trip? Are
we showing his trip? Oh? Yeah, that was embarrassing. But like,

(31:20):
he's just he's not a good quarterback. It's okay to
say that. It's okay. He shown you, terrifying you who
he is. He looks like when he drops back, he's like,
I don't want to make a mistake. I don't want
to make him say I'm afraid of and he makes
a mistake. Because when you're thinking like that, yeah and yeah,
this is gonna be interesting.

Speaker 5 (31:35):
But I definitely feel like they might have jumped Agun
a little bit on that contract with him.

Speaker 3 (31:39):
All right, Alex, hurry with the news.

Speaker 2 (31:41):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
Herd Line news.

Speaker 3 (31:46):
All right, So the Warriors Big three is done. It
might have been done a couple of years ago.

Speaker 4 (31:50):
But I can tell you for sure one guy is
to blame for this demise. I'll tell you about that
next year on the Herd.

Speaker 2 (31:57):
Be sure to catch live editions of the Herds noon

Speaker 5 (32:33):
Tomorrow The Summer of Stars shine bright in a Copa
America quarterfinals battle as Messi and Argentina take on Ecuador.
Coverage begins tomorrow eight pm Eastern on Fox.

Speaker 4 (32:46):
Jason McIntyre back here on the Herd and for Colin
and Colin obviously has a relationship with Draymond Green. So
I gotta be a little delicate here with how I
phrase this, But let's start with the positives.

Speaker 3 (32:57):
Okay.

Speaker 4 (32:57):
The Golden State Warriors, with the splash brother Andreimond Green,
reshaped the way basketball's.

Speaker 3 (33:03):
Played in this country.

Speaker 4 (33:04):
They totally shifted the entire philosophy the NBA into shooting threes.
That is thanks to Steve Kerr, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson,
and yes, Draymond Green. It was a phenomenal era for
Golden State and now it's over. It's weird because in
twenty twenty two they won the championship, which really cemented

(33:24):
this Golden State team's place.

Speaker 3 (33:27):
Steph Curry all time great.

Speaker 4 (33:28):
We knew he was an all time great, but to
win before they got Kevin Durant, with Kevin Durant and
then after, oh my gosh, these guys are legends. Steph Curry,
for my money, is a top twelve player in the
history of the sport. If I really got Granule or
I could probably get him in the top ten.

Speaker 3 (33:43):
Maybe we'll do that one day.

Speaker 4 (33:44):
But I just look at what's happened with this team,
and I'm trying to pinpoint when exactly it became an
unmitigated disaster, and I have to go back to twenty
twenty two.

Speaker 3 (33:55):
They win the CHIP in twenty twenty two June. It
was incredible.

Speaker 4 (33:59):
Andrew Wiggins might have been their second best player in
the finals. Jordan Poole had some moments that season in
those playoffs.

Speaker 3 (34:06):
Step Curry obviously was transcendent against the Celtics.

Speaker 4 (34:09):
I think he had a forty three point game, just
unbelievable stuff. And then October comes around and you have
the punch. Draymond Green punches out. It was a sucker punch. Sorry, guys,
nobody expects to get punched by their teammate.

Speaker 3 (34:24):
At practice. Draymond Green sucker punches Jordan Pool and that
Pool had been.

Speaker 4 (34:28):
Talking a lot of trash to him about Some of
it had to do with a contract.

Speaker 3 (34:33):
Draymond Green had been wanting a contract. He didn't get it.

Speaker 4 (34:36):
Everybody knew Andrew Wiggins was gonna get paid, and Jordan
Pool was needling him and taking some shots. Draymond punches
him out. It's been all downhill from there, and I
charted this out.

Speaker 3 (34:44):
It's super depressing.

Speaker 4 (34:46):
But in October of twenty twenty two, Draymond punches out Pool.
Later that month, the Warriors decide, hey, we're gonna go
ahead and extend Andrew Wiggins for four years.

Speaker 3 (34:57):
It was like, oh, that's eye opening.

Speaker 4 (34:59):
Wiggins okay in Minnesota, not really a number one pick,
and he was very good in Golden State, but again
it was short lived. We don't know how I mean,
Wiggins was great for a season, but is it a
four year deal?

Speaker 3 (35:11):
Okay? All right, got it? And after the punch the
team was just not the same.

Speaker 4 (35:16):
They were a train wreck in twenty twenty three, and
that's when it was like, oh, is.

Speaker 3 (35:20):
This the end of the Warriors? Does the dynasty hold up?

Speaker 4 (35:23):
Bob Myers made a big decision instead of tearing this
thing down to the studs and rebuilding, I'm out. Bob Myers,
largely the architect of those Warriors, said I'd rather go
to TV than be the guy who ends up trading
Draymond or Clay and Curry's very attached to those guys.

Speaker 3 (35:40):
Meyers said, I don't want to do it.

Speaker 4 (35:41):
He ends up on TV at ESPN like talking about
the NBA.

Speaker 3 (35:45):
Okay, he did not want to tear it down. They
all know what happens when you tear down the dynasty,
and we'll get to that in a second.

Speaker 4 (35:52):
So after the season, they end up shipping Jordan Pool
to the Washington Wizards for Chris Okay.

Speaker 3 (36:01):
I said at the.

Speaker 4 (36:01):
Time, terrible deal. You had to kind of move on
from Pool, it wasn't working with Draymond, but they got
like nothing in Chris Paul. He was he's old, he's
always injured.

Speaker 3 (36:10):
Guess what.

Speaker 4 (36:11):
He was injured with the Warriors, and now they lose
him for nothing. It essentially, according to Warriors beat writers,
that trade of Jordan.

Speaker 3 (36:17):
Pool he was a salary dump.

Speaker 4 (36:19):
Jordan Poole, a guy who looked like a I don't know,
have a foundational piece, but a key cog in those
Warriors teams is a transition out of Curry and Clay
into the next generation. Now you can also toss in
a big, huge whiff on James Wiseman there at the
top of the lottery.

Speaker 3 (36:35):
Just an absolute disaster. Wiseman.

Speaker 4 (36:37):
It had been a bounce around the league guy already.
So everything's kind of going sideways. And then they extended Draymond.
They gave Draymond a four year deal, and it's like
at that point, it's like, what are we doing Draymond's stats,
I mean, technical fouls, disruptions, and I mean it's just
continued to snowball. Then you get to Clay and Clay's like, well,

(36:57):
you gave wiggeds four you gave Raymond for I need
four years, which is a reasonable ask for Clay.

Speaker 3 (37:03):
Who I mean, he was part.

Speaker 4 (37:04):
Of this plast brothers. He could get a statue in
front of the Chase Center. He helped build that thing.
He helped line the pockets of Joe lacub and the
owners of the Warriors and the new GM Mike Dunleavy
was a former Warriors players like, can't go to four?

Speaker 3 (37:21):
And then you start looking, where's that coming from?

Speaker 4 (37:22):
Oh, Dunleavy's got to be the hatchet guy for the owner.
And here's a fun stat that I was able to
dig up. So in the last four years, you guys know,
the Warriors and the Clippers paid heavy luxury taxes. Now
you've got both teams regressing. You got the second apron
being extremely more punitive, and would you look at that,

(37:45):
Suddenly the Warriors and the Clippers are not in the
luxury tax heading into next season. Isn't it interesting how
that happens. Hey, we're gonna pay a lot, We're gonna
go all in and uh oh shoot, we're a playing
team paying the luxury tax. Sorry about your luck, Clay.
I'm just telling you, guys, you go back to that
Draymond punch. It has all been downhill. Bad decision after

(38:08):
bad decision, and I know we all want to get
romantic about the past, and how can you break up
the Splash Brothers. One of the best quotes. I wish
I could remember who it's attributed to. It might be
Bill Parcells, could be somebody in the NFL, maybe NBA.
But the best time to rebuild is last year. And
the Warriors had many, many chances of doing this, and

(38:31):
they kept compounding.

Speaker 3 (38:32):
It with Wei gets up those winner title. We gotta
pay him. Jordan Poole, oh man, he was talking. Draymond
got punched.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
Awkward.

Speaker 3 (38:39):
We got to get Pool out of here.

Speaker 4 (38:40):
Now, Pool, to be fair, has been a disaster with
the Wizards, but he was very good top for a
time with the Warriors.

Speaker 3 (38:46):
He was very good at integral.

Speaker 4 (38:47):
Remember Clay went down and Pool was starting with Curry
and they were like eighteen and two.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
Jordan Poole worked with Curry, he didn't really work with
Draymond Green.

Speaker 4 (38:56):
And then you extend Draymond and I don't know what
Draymond's giving you statistically. Here's Draymond talking about him talking
to Clay within the last week.

Speaker 11 (39:05):
Clay told us last week I don't know who are
he told me. I know he talked to me pretty sure.
He talked to Steph last week, and the conversation just
kind of starts as small talking like you're kind of
just prepping yourself, like man, get me there, like I

(39:27):
know it's coming. I was just able to listen, you know.
And it wasn't like a yo, we could finish like this,
so like you should rethink this. It was just like wow,
I'm like all right, like congrass bro, like I'm happy
for you. That's dope.

Speaker 4 (39:41):
Interesting shirt color there for Draymond, very green money. I
got mine, Clay didn't get his. Nothing that was obviously
on accident.

Speaker 3 (39:50):
I'll wrap up with this.

Speaker 4 (39:51):
It is really tough to keep the dynasty going in
the NBA okay, and look no further than the Chicago
Bulls okay with Jordan in the nineties, three titles, Jordan quits,
comes back, three more titles, and then it's over and
Pippin went his way. Jerry Krause is the one who

(40:15):
everybody's pinning on.

Speaker 2 (40:16):
Wolla.

Speaker 3 (40:17):
He broke up the dynasty. He ended things.

Speaker 4 (40:19):
Phil Jackson moves on, and you remember the last dance
was obviously about the Bulls final run to the title.

Speaker 3 (40:29):
It was great.

Speaker 4 (40:29):
It was fun to just talk about during COVID and
it almost feels like the Warriors. Last dance was twenty
twenty two. And here's the scary thing if you're a
Golden State fan. Since the last dance in ninety eight,
for the Bulls, they've been to one conference final in
twenty five years. Twenty five one, they thought they had

(40:50):
it in Derrick Rose and he got them to the
conference finals. Remember they get one game one against Lebron
and the Heatles and then Lebron's like, I got this, folks,
I got d Rose and the heat win four in
a row.

Speaker 2 (41:01):
But that's it.

Speaker 4 (41:02):
One conference final trip in twenty five years after taking
down the dynasty, and they've had bites at the Apple.

Speaker 3 (41:07):
I think they had the number one pick Elton brand.

Speaker 4 (41:09):
They had Jay Williams unlucky with the motorcycle accident. You
had Eddie Curry, Tyson Chandler. They had a lot of
bites at the Apple and you can have a great,
amazing run. The Chicago Bulls have been irrelevant to the
NBA for twenty five years. Outside of a Derrick Rose
brief awesomeness in Chicago. That's how it could be for

(41:32):
Golden State going forward. I don't have them in the
top eight, folks. They were a playing team last year
and lost two of their top seven.

Speaker 3 (41:39):
Guys in Clay and Chris Paul. So Golden State fans,
I know you got Curry and you can hold onto that.

Speaker 4 (41:46):
I mean, listen, we're gonna be headed down a dark
path in Golden State where pretty soon they're gonna be hit,
which shucks. We're not getting good, We're not contending.

Speaker 3 (41:55):
Do we have to at some point trade Steph Curry?

Speaker 4 (41:57):
We don't want to do that. But do we want
Curry winning thirty five games? You know the league doesn't
want that. They would love him in the playoffs. I
just don't know where we're going. If you're a Golden
State Warriors fan, and listen, you guys were largely irrelevant
before Curry and the Splash brother showed up. I know
they want a title way back when, but it was sure.
There was the Baron Davis romance and a couple of
okay teams and the run TMC, which was fun a

(42:20):
flash in the pan.

Speaker 3 (42:21):
It's tough.

Speaker 4 (42:22):
The Warriors had a great run and now folks, it
could be over all right coming up next final hour.
What does it mean for Klay Thompson spurning the Lakers
and PG to Philly.

Speaker 3 (42:34):
Is that the last Big three we'll ever see? That's
