You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Oh, here we go, our number two on a Monday.
I've been on planes a lot recently. I forgot what
day it was. It's the Herd wherever you may be,
however you may be listening. Thanks for making us part
of your day. Thank God. I sleep on planes. I
feel bad for people that don't sleep on planes. I'm out,
(00:47):
they close the door. I'm out, moom a couple hours.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
I'm taking a pill or a gummy or anything.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
No. In fact, my wife offered me a gummy the
other night. Gummies are hot right now set and I said,
you know what, I got a gin soda hanging out
with a family at a big event. I was like,
I'm good.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
But then don't you wake up on the planet at
the pee multiple times after drinking alcohol?
Speaker 5 (01:09):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:09):
No, I don't drink on planes. Oh oh no, I'm
saying that was at the part of this On planes,
I just fall asleep in water water water, and yeah,
so it's a but I was offered a gummy this
weekend only once, only once, and I didn't know.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
You know, I'm not adverse.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
People take what they want, your business, not mine. I
didn't know. I didn't have much understanding of gummies. So
I'm like, am I going to be like, you know,
flying over the house and like a human drone, like
don't know where I'm at or you know, I want
to be in conversation.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
These gummies are probably five milligrams, maybe ten, So you're
a gummy guy.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
I'm well versed in gummies.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Hey, I'm I'm not judging.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
No, I don't.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Hey.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
To get through this political season, I may go pro gummy, heavy,
pro gummy, all.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Right, Colin Right? Colin wrong? On a Monday, Baby, here
we go where Colin was right? Oh, what do you know?
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Caitlin Clark led the WNBA All Stars to a win
over the Olympic team. Oh so she is good enough
to play for the women's Olympic team, Colin, she would
have been a distraction. No, she's actually a distraction, not
playing for the Olympic team. She's simply proving that she
doesn't need to put in all this time to be
(02:30):
an elite player. Her offense still can be rough, little
turnover heavy, but in the end, she's proving just like
Jalen Brown not in the Olympics for the men's A
lot of this stuff is petty and it's territorial. She
proved she's good enough to be on the Olympic team,
(02:50):
which was a huge argument.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
That she wasn't.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Where Colin was wrong, I said, this men's Olympic team
is deeper than the Dream team. Think they're probably more skilled,
but man di did they struggle against South Sudan and
leave it to Lebron that, once again in year twenty
two had to actually save the team. Not a terribly
focused team. We let Australia back into a game and
(03:14):
Serbia late. I think it's just kind of the reality
of modern players. They don't quite have the urgency i'd love,
or a grit. But I will say this, Lebron and
ad if you're a Laker fan, have looked like the
most consistent two top players for this club.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Where Colin was right, I defended.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
The Lakers drafting Browny James in a bad draft, he'll
be fine.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Well.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
His official Summer league stats almost nine points a game,
three and a half rebounds. He got better every game,
and he was an excellent defender. He's fine again. I thought,
from the first Summer League game to the last, much
more comfortable offensively. He found a little bit of a stroke.
(04:02):
Take a deep breath. He's good enough to get drafted.
I don't ever think he'll be more than a rotational
NBA player, But in this draft, the fifty fifth pick
is probably going to be regardless of who it is,
and wharing Lands a rotational player.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Where Colin was wrong.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
I think the Niners are eventually going to move off
either Deebo Samuel or Brandon I Yuke. But ESPN reporting
the Niners now are saying we're not moving it. They've
gotten interest. I just don't think I think you can
get a first rounder for him. They just drafted two receivers,
and I believe that debo fits in to Kyle Shanahan
(04:45):
his DNA more. I think it's a debo Shanahan Christian
McCaffrey offense, not a Brandon I Yuke offense. Though I
think he's super talented, a top five receiver in the league,
but I think he's getting moved. And another story this week,
the Niners.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Aren't moving him. Where Colin was right?
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Well, I've been saying that I think Nick Sirianni's on
the hot seat, and Diana Russini reporting that Jalen Hurts
and Sirianni are still growing as a relationship and that
he is on some level of heat going into this season.
ESPN reporting also that the Eagles kick the tires privately
(05:30):
about Bill Belichick. So I don't know if Sirianni is
the fit.
Speaker 6 (05:34):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
I don't know. He sometimes he acts a little juvenile.
Reports now that he and Jalen Hurts is a work
in progress. Either way, this idea that the job is his,
he's safe. I've said I think he's on a similar
hot seat to Mike McCarthy. But it's McCarthy that everybody
understands is on the hot seat, and Sirianni people think
(05:57):
he's safe. I don't where Colin was right? Show heo Taani.
I said it years ago, I said it this year,
I said it earlier. This season is better than Babe Ruth.
What a last week. He's had and did you see
this yesterday? To one is hammer deep bright center field,
(06:18):
way out of here.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
And old Tony joins the home run party. A thirty
home run season for Shaw hel Tony. Oh, how do
you like that? Four hundred and seventy three feet.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
That's the second longest home run since they've been keeping
track at Dodger Stadium. He also had the three run
home run in the All Star Game. He's gonna win
MVP as a DH. He is just a remarkable player.
He's not even pitching. I mean, the kid is absolutely remarkable.
The gambling controversy shrouded in that early no impact and
(06:55):
by the way, the Dodgers, you know, guys sitting in
front of him starting pitching or all banged up. So
he's had to carry a lot of the load this year.
That's more pressure. Hasn't affected him one bit. Where Colin
was wrong, I said Caitlin Clark would triple the WNBA
(07:16):
media rights in the next couple of years.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
I was wrong.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
She's quadrupled it. According to a story, the league will
get two point two billion over the next eleven years. Now.
They've had a lot of good players, but you know,
let's be honest Magic and Bird Connor McGregor. They were
catalysts for their sports, not just great players. And Caitlin
(07:40):
Clark getting them on, you know, kind of private flights,
getting this kind of media deal. I think it's good
for the league. But let's be honest here. This is
another reason you figure out a way to get her
on the Olympic team. She doesn't need to pay dues
because she's paying everybody else going forward.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
In this league.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Where Colin was right, well, I said last week, Patrick
Mahomes will figure it out. He just won back to
back Super Bowls with Rashi Rice and Juju Smith Schuster
was as top receivers. Yeah, this weekend with a rookie
Xavier Worthy, Mahomes rolls out left on corks about a
seventy yard bomb. Worthy at the other end makes the catch.
Jay Mack, I know this hurts, but this team won
(08:20):
the Super Bowl last year and they were kind of
bad weeks eleven through fourteen. Look at that throw o,
Patrick Mahomes. As we said, Brady Mahomes, they just figure
stuff out, and it looks like they have found their
next number one star playmaker. Where Colin was right, I said,
(08:45):
I think the New York Giants had become the Jets
with more trophies. But this Hard Knock show, yikes, is
it uncomfortable with John Mara, Joe Shane, the general manager.
We've seen several pieces of video. My knock on the
Jets has never been lack of talent. It's sort of
been lack of a plan. And as I watch this
(09:08):
Hard Knocks, I'll be honest with you, I am uncomfortable
for Joe Shane, Brian Dable, the Maras and everybody with
the Giants basically the Jets with more trophies. Where Colin
was right, where Colin was wrong. On a Monday, Rachel
Nichols now who's covered the nbas in nineteen ninety three,
(09:28):
among other things, that's joining us. So I'm sitting watching
Rachel and I'm watching South Sudan in Team USA, and
the first half I'm like, what in the world's going on?
Speaker 2 (09:39):
So listen.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
There's a lot of global basketball talent. There's a lot
of good players out there. But I was telling this earlier,
is I think we have more talent than we've ever had,
but there isn't Kobe had this garnet. There's an old
school grit there's an old stool where years ago guys
were fighting for a piece of the pie. Everybody gets
their own pie. Are you surprised at all that in
crisis they're still leaning on Lebron in Team USA.
Speaker 7 (10:02):
I mean, I'm not surprised because we just saw him
play a season where he did not look thirty nine
years old. So the fact that he's approaching forty and
is doing what he's doing in this Olympic team is
you just have to get used to it at some point,
because he keeps doing it.
Speaker 8 (10:16):
I think it's interesting that.
Speaker 7 (10:18):
He's basically been handed the keys. He's the point forward
of the team. He's expected to perform in the clutch.
He had a great I mean, he really saved them
in this last game, absolutely, And you know, I think, look,
there's time Steph Curry is going to save them, right,
there's times Kevin Durant is going to save them. My thing,
and we've talked about this for weeks. This is going
to be a tougher tournament than people think.
Speaker 8 (10:39):
I still think they're winning the gold medal, but there
is no cakewalk here.
Speaker 7 (10:43):
And that's really what was driven home over the weekend
that even a team that was projected.
Speaker 8 (10:48):
To lose by what thirty six points or something like that.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
I thought the line was forty one.
Speaker 7 (10:52):
Ye, I'm sure by game time it was right. But
if you don't take them seriously, they can hurt you.
All of these teams, even this very new team.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
From a country.
Speaker 7 (11:01):
By the way, South Sudan does not have a single
indoor basketball court. Luel Dang is currently building one. But
everybody learns and trains outside on you know, you know
what the rims and the concrete is like. So this
is a team that really had no right to be
toe to toe with Team USA. But I don't think
Team USA took them seriously in the way that they're
(11:23):
going to have to do with every opponent. TSA beat Canada,
which was supposed to be a big rival of theirs.
They beat Serbia, which was supposed to be a big
threat to them. So I think after that they see
South Sudan on the schedule and they are like, oh,
it's fine, they just didn't play defense, you know, for
the first half, and you can't do that against any
of these teams.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
You know. It's interesting if you if you go back
to the end of MJ's career, there was tons of
animosity on the DC team.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
No question.
Speaker 8 (11:49):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
But it does say something that the team voted Lebron
the flag bear. The young players voted Lebron. This is
something that I don't think Lebron's ever quite got. He's
never really gotten the respect he deserves on this, Michael
(12:11):
a lesser degree Kobe. They wore out a lot of
young players. Yeah, but Lebron's like, well liked. I think
the fact that he was voted on black players says
something absolutely.
Speaker 7 (12:22):
And by the way, the entire Olympic team, it's not
just the basketball team that voted, it was the entire
Olympic team. And look, they usually give this honor to
an athlete who has had several games experienced, so it's
someone who's a veteran of Team USA. But there's a
lot of veterans of Team USA across the board, on
the women's basketball side and every sport you can think of,
and there's never been a male basketball player from Team
(12:44):
USA who has carried the flag.
Speaker 8 (12:45):
So that tells you, Wow, how.
Speaker 7 (12:47):
Much of an honor and how much of an accomplishment
this is. Lebron is a different temperament than Kobe and MJ.
And he always has been right. Kobe and MJ didn't
care who liked them, you know, in fact, they kind
of wanted people not to like them, right, and it
was just sort of winning was filling this need that
they have. Lebron to me, has always been someone who
winning builds him as opposed to like sort of filling something,
(13:08):
and he.
Speaker 8 (13:09):
Wants to be liked.
Speaker 7 (13:10):
And you know, he's talked about that in recent years
that when he tried to be the villain in like it,
he didn't like it.
Speaker 8 (13:16):
So you know, I'm not surprised.
Speaker 7 (13:18):
And he has been much better with young players than
some of the vets were with him when he was younger.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
I will say.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
That there are certain players Anthony Davis has had, in
my opinion, without waiving attention to himself, Anthony Davis, more
than perhaps any player in the league, has been elevated
in the eyes. We've always know he has talent. Yeah,
(13:46):
he's a dominant player at the Olympics. He had a
dominant season, and there's something about whereas Embiid is esthetically
more fun, more people campaign for him. Do you think
private players are watching this thinking ades actually should start.
Speaker 7 (14:04):
I mean, part of the reason Ad is not starting
is because they really found some chemistry with him and
Bam out of Baio and playing them together has yielded
them a lot, so I think they're reluctant to break
that up. And the hope is that Joelle sort of
plays himself into shape throughout this tournament. Obviously he missed
a huge chunk of time toward the end of the
season got himself together for the playoffs, but that was
(14:25):
rocky physically as well, so it's not a shock to see.
Speaker 8 (14:28):
Him in this capacity.
Speaker 7 (14:30):
To me, Anthony Davis is for as great as he
has been, and he has a championship ring and he
has had all kinds of stats showing his dominance. I
don't think he is at his peak of what he
can do. I think his talent is still higher than
what he's accomplished so far, and I think that JJ
Reddick is going to bring that out in him with
his sort of analytical approach to the game, and I
think Steve Kerr helps bring that out in him with
(14:52):
the way he approaches the game. And then, of course
everyone plays better when there's better players around them. You
have more space, you have more shooting. It also speaks
to the Lakers roster and what they don't have now.
Of course they're not going to have a team of
elite Hall of Fame All Stars, but just even the
shooting around Ad in this tournament versus what he has
at home, quote unquote, it's pretty different, and you know,
(15:13):
if the Lakers know, they need to address it.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
So the summer league here and gone. Alex Sar, the
second pick, really struggled. This was a project draft. It
was a development draft. I thought when it was all
said and done, Brownie almost averaged nine, got a bunch
of rebounds, played really solid defense. I thought it was
a win for Browny.
Speaker 8 (15:34):
Oh, I think so one hundred percent.
Speaker 7 (15:36):
And he's just dealing with a lot more than any
number fifty five pick I think ever has.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Right.
Speaker 8 (15:42):
The number fifty five.
Speaker 7 (15:43):
Pick last year played four total minutes in the NBA,
not four minutes a game, four total.
Speaker 8 (15:49):
Minutes in the NBA, right, And that was a good draft.
Speaker 7 (15:53):
So the expectation on him to have this bonker summer
League or to be able to deal with, you know,
all the pressure he's dealing with has been so high,
and he has risen to the occasion. With some early
stumbles in a way that I think shows a lot
about his character. Yeah, I mean he had people chanting
in the game he sat out at the end of
Summer League. By the third quarter, when the fans realized
(16:15):
he just wasn't playing, there were people chanting, we want Bronnie,
we want Bronnie. How awkward is that to the rest
of the guys on your team. He's got to deal
with that all the time.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Yeah, So I have been on this that it doesn't
happen to a lot of sports, but I've seen it
in baseball.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
I've seen it in men's soccer. I see it a.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
Little in the WNBA, where if you feel somewhat slided
or ignored, it's kind of like a middle child syndrome. Yes,
that sometimes in sports you can be very insular, little petty.
And I do think there's been this WNBA sort of
you got to pay your dues a little. And my
take is, I think Caitlin's good. I think she's getting better.
I think she's a facilitator, so she'd be perfect. She's
(16:55):
really perfect to play with other great players. Yeah, I
could argue she's built for All Star games. Really, yes, No,
and Olympic teams. Do you think as they look at
it now, do you think maybe a little bit the
Olympic women's team is thinking, did we have to lose
to Caitlin Clark and the wab L sir team of
all the games we needed to win?
Speaker 2 (17:15):
Did it kind of? Was it kind of a? Okay?
Speaker 1 (17:18):
You think there's anybody on that Olympic team that thinks
we've probably just shout for there?
Speaker 7 (17:23):
Well, look, the last time they did this, prior to
the Tokyo Olympics, the WNBA team beat Team USA, So
it's happened before. And frankly, this is the toughest competition
Team USA is going to face in this entire month.
They're not going to face an opponent in the international
tournament that is as talented as hungry as we saw
(17:44):
the WNBA team b over the weekend and.
Speaker 8 (17:47):
Chero we talked about that.
Speaker 7 (17:48):
She said, I think this is a landmark game for
our league and it's one of the most exciting nights
we've ever had because there were so many eyeballs and
so much attention on it, and part of that is
due to Kitlin Clark. I mean, if you look at
the voting, the top eleven players in voting for the
All Star Game last year, I think it was seven
hundred and thirty four thousand or something in that ballpark.
(18:10):
The total voting this year just for Caitlin Clark alone
was seven hundred thousand, So that not only tells you
how popular she is, but tells you how many more
people are voting, how many more people tuned in. I
think that most of the WNBA is actually pretty grateful
for her bringing those eyeballs, and especially to an All
Star game.
Speaker 8 (18:27):
Because look at all the players that got to show off.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Right, Oh, that's that is my Arica was.
Speaker 7 (18:32):
Great, Angel was great. Brianna Stewey was just like a
beast out there.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
You're a great musical act. Who you choose as you're
open changes career?
Speaker 3 (18:42):
Yes, like it?
Speaker 1 (18:43):
It's I can remember. I think it was the Rolling
Stones at one point. Choose guns n' Roses and guns n'
Roses out forformed them. There is something to be said
you put Caitlin Clark in these showcase games because advertisers
will watch no like I. And by the way, if
you're in a member of chicag there can be car dealerships.
There's all sorts of local businesses that we forget not
(19:04):
every AD's a national ad.
Speaker 7 (19:06):
No, Sandana absolutely does that. Yeah, No, one hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (19:10):
I mean as for TMUSA, I will say this, I
think that Caitlin Clark is more relieved not to be
on tm USA than she would was when the selection
process was going on. I think she wanted to be
on TMUSA when the selection process is going on. But
she talked at this All Star game about how exhausted
she is. She's played a year straight of basketball the calendar,
going from college to pro try.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
Women because the WNBA season, you don't get to layoff
after college.
Speaker 7 (19:34):
Her last basketball game for IOWA was in April, and
the draft of April thirteenth, and then get into training
camp two weeks later. So she's very tired from all
of that basketball and frankly also from carrying the leaks
that she's been in. She's had the most attention on
her and I think it's affected her shot.
Speaker 8 (19:49):
Her shot didn't go in this All Stars.
Speaker 7 (19:52):
She's been a little bit, you know, tough from the
three point line for a while, and I think it's exhaustion.
And she just said, I'm looking forward to taking a
month off. I'll see you at the end. I think
we're going to see a rejuvenated Caitlin Clark for this
final run of the season.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
Rachel Nichols in studio. Love having you. I hope you
had it.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
What did you do this weekend? He was shooting baskets.
I was doing lobster Fest when you do.
Speaker 8 (20:12):
My brother's in town, visiting from New York, so lots
of good dinners.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
So this is the chef.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
No, this is other brother.
Speaker 8 (20:18):
So yes, the chef brother lives here in Los Angeles.
Speaker 1 (20:21):
I'm not going to get into Rachel's family.
Speaker 8 (20:23):
But I got some people. I got some people.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
There's a lot of good meals.
Speaker 7 (20:28):
I want to tell you that, although I do want
to say that because I have two brothers and no sisters.
Everyone asked me, oh, did your brothers get you into sports?
And I got my younger brother into sports, and my
older brother doesn't watch sports at all.
Speaker 8 (20:40):
So I just want to say that the equation was flipped.
Thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
You're the flag bear for sports in your family.
Speaker 9 (20:46):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
Back in a second, Live in Los Angeles, The Herd
one more Heard.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
The Herd streams twenty four hours a day, seven days
a week within the iHeartRadio app search Herd to listen
live or on demand whenever you like, We're gonna go live.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Last hour to the reporter talking about Jordan Love saying,
I am not going to practice until I get my
new contract, which sounds very inflammatory until you realize Green
Bay wants to get it done. Jordan Love wants to
get it done. Plus you ever get to a point
with certain people like Green Bay just does quarterbacks right, Well,
(21:24):
I just figure it out. I mean, they gave Aaron
Rodgers a lot of rope and at the end they
were like, okay, darkness retreat, you won't give us an answer.
But in the end, up until the Darkness Retreat, they
were kind of dealing with a prickly quarterback. He was
kind of putting them on hold. Green Bay just does
quarterbacking right, and I trust them.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
In sports like Villanova basketball, the culture set it's very good.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
Rams.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
Everybody's got them in rebuilds like the Rams culture is
so good. You know, Jim Harbaugh teams will be physical.
Lebron James will come in and play hard. Green Bay
will get the quarterback right. Villanova basketball players will come
in more tested, tougher, and more mature. Than the average
college basketball player. Some things in sports I just know
(22:14):
to be true, and I just think Green Bay and quarterback,
and I think some of it is the fact they
don't have an owner. They don't get they don't get desperate,
they don't feel this need. Everything with them at quarterback
is we draft them early. They sit. It's part of
a process. It's a fascinating organization. They never draft offense
(22:35):
in the first round, but yet they always have great
receivers and great lines. And it's just they have a
culture in Green Bay that I trust. When's the last
time the Packers were bad offensively? Thirty years ago?
Speaker 4 (22:47):
They got lucky with Farvan Rogers back to back. But
what if Love goes in there negotiations says, hey, you
know what, I got as many playoff wins as Trevor Lawrence,
So I'll need fifty five million a year.
Speaker 1 (22:58):
Well, I think he's going to get around there. Okay,
So the question is with Jordan Love, the question is
the number. So I'm very comfortable paying about three guys
in the league sixty something million, Mahomes and Allen. I'm
very comfortable those are the same. Josh Allen, who hasn't
been to a Super Bowl. I'm gonna pay him whatever
it is. Buffalo was irrelevant the last twenty five years.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
He changed everything.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
So if Joe Burrow had no injuries, I'd be comfortable
with him at that number. But he's got injury, so
I'm not same with Lamar. Lamar's had some couple seasons
with a lot of missus. It worries me a little.
With Alan and Mahomes, I get great productive, no injuries,
so I'll pay those guys in the sixes. Then the
next level of guys is fifty five to fifty seven
(23:45):
to sixty, and that is big time talent. But there's
a concern Herbert, I need more wins, Lamar Burrow, I
worry a little bit about their health. Matt Stafford, I'd
pay him a ton, worry a little about his age.
So that's my that's my five. The two guys in
the sixes, three or four guys, there's a little concern
(24:05):
on something. But they get fifty seven up, then I
think the next wave. Jordan loves at the top of
the next wave. Clear talent, absolutely the future, no injuries,
but probably not enough pelts, not enough things where you're
gonna say it's Mahomes money, but he's going to be
(24:26):
in that fifty four million, And I think in that
class is Jordan Love. You know, boy, it's a tua.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
No, I'm just bitball. I don't say anything.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
No, but it's that type of player.
Speaker 4 (24:40):
Just to be clear, you are endorsing Love saying I'm
not practicing until like, here's.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
The best way to do it. No, I want to
do this.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
We should do a list of if I had to
pay quarterbacks, if everybody made exactly what they should make
in my world. So we did quarterbacks in order of success, achievement, trophies, health, everything.
We would both have Mahomes one.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
Okay, easy.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
If that's a tough one, we can't continue the segment.
Speaker 3 (25:08):
Your list of criteria is like not fully dependent.
Speaker 1 (25:11):
On productive wins nothing. Do you think I'm totally dependent
on the show. Everybody's dependent on somebody else. Of course
Andy Reid helps Mahomes. Of course Belichick help break. Everybody's
dependent on somebody. So I mean a brain surgeon, he
needs people around the table. I got news for you.
(25:31):
So Mahomes is your highest paid I believe Josh Allen
based on productivity, size, touchdowns, running, Pat Allen two. I
think there's arguments on who three is, which shows you
how difficult this is. If Burrow didn't have injuries, easy
for me to say three, But I'm worried about Lamar
(25:52):
Jackson to me, Herbert to me, I would have no
problem paying on Herbert.
Speaker 4 (25:57):
Burrow went into Arrowhead and one playoff game to go
to the Super.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
Bowl and has been hurt the last four years.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
Tua had massive concussions and then.
Speaker 4 (26:06):
Was fired last year. Like is not so you you
have a questioned about who three is after Allen?
Speaker 1 (26:12):
Yes, wow, I can't even think whether is and Tua
in the same sentence.
Speaker 4 (26:18):
No, I'm saying injuries. You could be injured for one
or two years and then you're fined. Steph Curry ankle
injuries early in his career.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
Yes, that's true.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
But Burrow's been injured four straight years. It's like a broadcaster.
Everybody makes mistakes. You make them twelve times a year.
You're a different broadcaster.
Speaker 3 (26:35):
So who's in the mix for three?
Speaker 1 (26:37):
That's the point. I think it's wide open. I think
my guess is in one year we will look at
Herbert with harbongo.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
Possible six, five, two forty one injury, Cannon arm moves,
brilliant kid, everybody loves him, no nonsense, good at the podium.
In one year, I think we're gonna look at her
and go, that's probably three.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
I've been hearing that for a couple of years now.
Now I'm very pro Herbert.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
Obviously Harbaugh changes the equation. But it's interesting you're picking
a guy with zero playoff wins to be like maybe
number three because Joe Burrows.
Speaker 3 (27:14):
Dominated in the postseason.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
He's been tremendous, but four years of injuries, so you
have to consider everything.
Speaker 3 (27:20):
Is it an appendect to be an injury or like,
come on, that's again.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
It wouldn't be if he'd had only that in five years,
but when that's the latest. So I mean to me,
you have to contextualize everything. You have to literally contextualize
everything when you talk. So and that's my point about
this stuff is not easy. Mahomes won alan to take
him off the board. It's like Andy reads the best coach.
Let's start with number two, right, and so number three.
(27:47):
I have about six guys I like, I like Herbert,
I like Lamar Jackson. I think Burrow if he's healthy,
and then I I mean, I've got one great year
of Jalen her Hurts. Now I think Jordan Love. I'll
give you an example, if we go mid October. Let's
(28:08):
just go to mid October, and Jordan Love is great
through mid October, and Justin Herbert Worth Harbaugh is a machine.
I can make an argument my four and five or
my three four and five is like Mahomes Allen off
the board. Those were great, and then I'm going burrow
(28:30):
Jordan Love, Herbert and now Lamar's in there. But I
worry about his injuries.
Speaker 4 (28:36):
So we say Jalen Hurts at a year, I mean
Jordan Loves at half of the year, and you're going.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
God, Jalen Hurts is smaller, is was not a first
round talent, has had multiple injury He's been hurt in
the last two years.
Speaker 3 (28:49):
I don't like when you say that he was not
a first round talent. That's just who cares. Nobody knows
what a first round talent is. Zach Wilson was the.
Speaker 4 (28:55):
First round talent. Well, Justin Fields was the first round talent.
Not Tom Brady was a sixth round talent.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
Not on this show. It's not what we thought. No,
I think it just shows you the difficulty. We should
do that tomorrow. What would I pay quarterbacks? And I
would base it on I mean, there's a lot of things. Obviously,
you gotta win games, you gotta be productive. I mean
if you have if you add nine running touchdowns a
year like Josh or Lamar that or Jalen Hurts, that
(29:22):
adds value. You can run around and the difference. But
you know again, if you can add ten touchdowns running,
of course it adds value to Lamar Jackson.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
And I remember last summer the Lamar do we pay
him or not? And I think one of your points is, listen,
he's been hurt the last two years.
Speaker 2 (29:37):
Yeah, it worries healthy MVP.
Speaker 4 (29:39):
Like I think the injury is maybe a little overblown
with some of this stuff. Like now Stafford is like
what thirty five and has had a history. But by
the way, that's a little different.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
Stafford's injuries have also been banging his hand on the helmet.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Right, it's just throwing motion.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
What I'm saying. He's not doing like multiple MRI or
ACL tears. It's not like that with him, Like Aaron
Rodgers is coming off a bad injury for an old guy. Stafford,
I feel like Stafford Drew is like it's a badge.
She got sacked on his shoulder. He banged his hand
on the helmet. Stafford's a fascinating guy because when you
(30:15):
consider I mean, when you consider Matt Stafford, there is
no question after Mahomes, he maybe have the liveliest arm
in the league. He is like a side arm thrower.
He's got a Super Bowl. He the he is the
coach on the field intellectually. He's got some injuries, but
they're not Burrow level or Lamar level yet. Stafford's a
(30:36):
guy that I think fairly we have to consider is
the third highest paid.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
Corner next two years. Who you've taken Stafford or Jordan Love.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
That's a tough one.
Speaker 4 (30:46):
No, I think Stafford's is Stafford o'brainer? Come on, well,
he's still it is prime.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
Maybe the tail in Stafford out.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
I think if you take Mahomes won Allen two, I
think Stafford's in that Burrow Lamar Stafford.
Speaker 4 (30:59):
Is that they're you remember the super Bowl run he
had in the post. He's unbelievable in every game. Every
game was a comeback.
Speaker 1 (31:06):
Last year was working with I mean last year the
Rams were in a rebuild, dude, they come within a
call of getting to the NFC championship like that that
that game was it.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
Detroit Lions game?
Speaker 4 (31:21):
Ye?
Speaker 1 (31:21):
Yeah, I mean like Detroit's got better players. The difference
in that is mcvay's Brandon Stafford.
Speaker 4 (31:26):
Well, if memory serves, the Lions offense just went right
through your Rams defense.
Speaker 3 (31:30):
Boom boom. Touchdown was like twenty one points.
Speaker 1 (31:33):
Yes, it's I think if you really right down the list, Stafford,
Lamar and Burrow, and I think Herbert's close would be
the guy you argue is the third one.
Speaker 4 (31:43):
Actually, Like, who's the best quarterback in the NFC? You
know it's not Jordan Love. I'm sorry to burst your
bubble by mid October. Come on, it'll be Stafford one,
Jordan Love two, Golf three by mid October. If you
use a sick day tomorrow, I'm ranking the NFC quarterbacks,
and Brock is probably one or.
Speaker 1 (32:01):
Two two words that don't enter my life sick day.
Speaker 2 (32:05):

Speaker 9 (33:30):
On the news.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
This is the herd Line News.
Speaker 3 (33:34):
All right, you're Buffalo Bills man.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
They had a noisy offseason, lot of veterans departing, led
of course by Stefon Diggs getting.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
Traded to the Texans.
Speaker 4 (33:43):
Buffalo, you know, not really viewed as next in line
behind the Chiefs in the AFC. Despite what do you
think about Josh Allens Well, friend of the show, Deon
Dawkins is perfectly fine with the team flying under the
radar and things. They can hit everybody with uppercuts this
season when.
Speaker 3 (34:00):
Guys go, guys have to be ready.
Speaker 5 (34:04):
You know, I think regardless of who's in those spots,
we know that they're.
Speaker 2 (34:09):
Gonna give it there.
Speaker 5 (34:10):
They're all you know, like fourteen, twenty one, twenty three,
all those numbers might not have those same faces, but
you know we're shooting for the stars, like everybody's counting
us out, which I'm cool with, you know, like we
could fly underneath that radar.
Speaker 3 (34:27):
And hit everybody with uppercuts.
Speaker 4 (34:31):
Okay, ten and a half wind total, Well, they've got
lucky to get.
Speaker 3 (34:35):
A little over.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
Yeah, you're under on ten and a half.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
Yeah, they're probably ten minut teams. You're probably still drunk
on lobster from the weekend. I just I don't see it, Colin.
I mean, is a rigorous first place schedule.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
They end the season with the Patriots twice and the Jets.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
How rigorous.
Speaker 4 (34:54):
I do like how the uh, the NFL gave them
a little love letter there. Hey, you can go to
Kansas City, then you get the buye and then you
get San France.
Speaker 3 (35:04):
That's fair by before the Niners.
Speaker 1 (35:05):
You take care of your stars. You gotta take care
of Josh Allen.
Speaker 3 (35:11):
By the way, look at that back half of the season.
Speaker 4 (35:13):
After the bye, come out Niners, Rams, Lions, Jets down there.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
I mean the two cupcakes against don't.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
I have them going eleven and six. I looked at
their schedule.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
I think they're okay.
Speaker 1 (35:24):
On the six losses, they're gonna lose. Okay, let's just
start at the top. At Baltimore is a tough one.
At Houston's a tough one too. I would say you'll
lose to Kansas City or San Francisco at LA a
tough one. At Detroit a tough one. That's that's five games, will.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
Always split with the Jets and Dolphins almost.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
And by the way, at Indy, no day at the beach.
Speaker 4 (35:47):
So now you're tossing in a Jets and a Dolphins loss.
That's seven losses.
Speaker 2 (35:50):
That's what I saw.
Speaker 1 (35:50):
I have them at eleven and six. I think I
think they'll they're not.
Speaker 4 (35:55):
What's up with Maybe one of those games is in London,
but three straight road games at Baltimore, at Houston ad
Jets that one of those may be overseas, yeah, probably,
But then before that Dolphins and Jags, Like, I don't
know what I'm getting with the Jacks.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
Well, Also, you're at Miami in week two. It's a
ninety eight degrees in human that's got trouble written all over.
Speaker 4 (36:13):
You get a healthy Kyler Murray in week one, who
throws a beautiful ball.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
Colin Cowherd.
Speaker 1 (36:18):
He does throw a beautiful ball, the prettiest of all.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
I like, are you gonna be on the Cardinals. I
think they're like seven way.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
I'm doing my top ten list right now.
Speaker 3 (36:26):
Top ten or Week one NFL picks.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
Who should be the highest paid quarterback based on talent production.
You're not gonna like it at all?
Speaker 3 (36:32):
Is that why you didn't talk to me during the
commercial breakthrough?
Speaker 1 (36:36):
Didn't you want to make eye contact with your nonsense?
Speaker 3 (36:39):
Next up as the Niners, another season with Super Bowl
or bust.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
But here's what's just terssing Steve Young, who faced a
lot of pressure back in the ninety four season before
he led San fran to the Lombardi.
Speaker 3 (36:51):
He's thirty year.
Speaker 4 (36:52):
Removed from their last Super Bowl win, and Young says
the forty nine ers can't keep relying on the same
mentality that the job should be on the line if
they can't get over the hump. This seems a little
bit too much jobs on the line. If the Niners
don't win the Super.
Speaker 3 (37:08):
Bowl this year. Let's settle down. They've been to the.
Speaker 4 (37:11):
NFC Title Game or Super Bowl for the last five years.
Calling there's no nobody's job is in jeopardy here, right.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
I don't think anybody's job is in jeopardy. No I
I do think as I've told you, they are old.
They're Detroit, but like wid years away.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
Where are they old?
Speaker 2 (37:29):
Left tackle?
Speaker 1 (37:30):
Then, I mean McCaffrey's got a lot of mileage on
those tires and he got married. Feebo's got a lot
of mileage on those legs. George Kittle got a lot
of mileage. Red Warner, Drake green Law old and those
are the back half of their linebacker. Running back left
has tight end. Those are physical positions. Those are dog
(37:51):
years and you know what they say, like that's those guys.
It's different playing quarterback Rock Purty not gonna get hit kicker, uh,
you know outside to receive, you play tight end. Kittle's
put in a lot of long days. They're they're old.
In key spots.
Speaker 4 (38:11):
You're like working yourself into a pretzel. Dismissing the Niners
they're old.
Speaker 1 (38:18):
Let's slow down with dismissing the Niners and saying they'll
make the playoffs, but they'll be an eleven and sixteam
and the Rams will be a twelve and five team.
By the way, texting with one of those teams GM
this weekend, I think he sees the world as I do.
Speaker 3 (38:36):
I'd say if the Niners.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
Don't get the look at that Niner schedule for the
radio audience, just think of land mines everywhere. Do they
have an easy two game stretch the whole season? No,
they don't have a single two game stretch. I mean
at the end, you're like, well, Detroit in Arizona, Detroit. Seriously,
you say, oh, they're favorite over the Jets.
Speaker 4 (38:59):
Doesn't they have to favored in every game on the schedule.
What are you talking about, Arizona Seattle. That's treacherous. Kyle
Shanahan's not losing a second of sleep game planning for
some of these teams.
Speaker 3 (39:10):
Patriots, Come on, I just don't see it.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
I haven't seen in the league.
Speaker 3 (39:15):
Best roster, best everything, best coach. No, I can't go there. Yeah, anyway, all.
Speaker 4 (39:22):
Right, let's get to the final story of Chicago Bears.
We just love talking about teams and players you like.
How about the hype for the Chicago Bears. Caleb Williams
roma Dunze Well, four year vet Jalen Johnson is tired
about hearing about hype and potential, saying it's all about
that action. At this point, he's stealing a line from
Marshawn Lynch. But uh, I don't know, is it.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
Time for them to really deliver action. I mean, they
got so much newness.
Speaker 2 (39:50):
I saw CJ.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
Stroud as a rookie tear it up with a worse
roster than the Bears in a tougher conference go in
ten games.
Speaker 7 (39:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
I mean I think sometimes when you see and Andrew
Luck or a c J. Stroud walk in and crush it.
It's like when Bob Stoops went to Oklahoma, they were
a mess. Year two he won a Natty. It puts
pressure on all coaches. You don't get like four years
I watched CJ.
Speaker 2 (40:14):
Stroud.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
They had new everything, GM coach, coordinator, roster, outside of ownership,
they had knew everything, and c J. Stroud got him
in the AFC to the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (40:22):
C J.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
Stroud has put pressure on this year's quarterbacks because to
turn Houston around in a month, I think CJ's put
a lot of heat on these young quarters.
Speaker 4 (40:35):
The problem with putting heat on the Bears, Colin, if
they have like an eight win season, Ibra Flu's toast
and now maybe you're getting an entire new offense for Caleb.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
In year two.
Speaker 3 (40:46):
We'll just that's okay.
Speaker 1 (40:48):
Yeah, I mean, you're basically restarting his career, so it's
very rare that you had Mahomes or Brady's life. You
get one coach for it. That's not the way the
league works. That's not the way the league should. Well
maybe it should, but that's not the way the league works.
You're a Jets fan, what are you? Revolving door? Thanks
like Bloomingdale's. It's just a revolving door into the of.
Speaker 3 (41:09):
The Stormingdale's reference. I like it, Okay, fair enough.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
J Mack with the News, Well that's the news, and
thanks for stopping by line.
Speaker 1 (41:20):
I'm not gonna unveil it to you, but I've got
my list. If you rank quarterbacks on how they should you,
if everybody was paid based on health, talent, production, leadership, everything,
I've got my top ten list. You're not gonna like it,
but it's a very healthy. I have to go through
the break and check if I forgot anybody. I don't
(41:43):
know what the hell to do with. Jalen Hurts.
Speaker 3 (41:44):
Just tell me it's party on the list.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
Come on, geez. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (41:54):
The key is the third spot. The key is the
third spot. I got to tell you something. This list
is pretty stout.
Speaker 3 (42:03):
Maybe you need another Cafe Americana.
Speaker 9 (42:04):
We'll sell you.
Speaker 5 (42:05):
Find my life.
Speaker 2 (42:06):
I'm on my second already hour Three nights,
