Speaker 1 (00:25):
Oh, it is a Monday. It is absolutely great to

you may be, however you may be listening. Thanks for us.
Thanks to you for making us part of your day.
Jmack op today back tomorrow vacationing with his Famin the
(00:48):
beautiful Pacific Northwest. One hour from now. Where Colin was right,
Where Colin was wrong. A Michael Red, former NBA or
one hour from now will stop by us well to
talk about the men's team USA, which is rolling beat
Puerto Rico over the weekend. So I was thinking about this.
(01:09):
Gotta be very careful. I tend to put my phone
down for the weekend, and I do that for a reason.
There's a lot of bad actors and grifters on the
internet who literally make money on clicks. I don't. I
make it in radio, I make it in TV. I
don't make my money in clicks. I make it in podcasting.
(01:30):
I make it in downloads. You have to consume my show.
I don't make it in clicks. But there's a big
world of people that's where they make their money. Scaring
you this morning. The stock market, the end is near, No,
it's not. Actually, the Fed's gonna drop the rates here
in September, probably again in November. So for those wanting
to buy a home, actually the best possible scenario is
(01:53):
the market cools off, comes down, rates come down twice,
probably should have been dropped about six months ago, and
then you buy on the dip. Panic is the time
to buy. That's how rich guys get richer. But again,
that doesn't get the clicks. It's much better to create
(02:13):
a TV show that says, oh, we found ghosts in
an old hotel. Those shows sell not Yeah, there's really
no ghosts and there's no real video. And there used
to be a guy that would go on Johnny Carson's
show and he would prove that all the magicians it
was just fake. Johnny Carson loved him because Johnny Carson
(02:35):
loved to rile people up and love magic and he
was hated, hated, polarizing. But we all know magic's fake.
Their job is to create illusions, and that's a lot
what we have today out there, the illusion that the
world is ending, the doomsday grifters. And so what does
that mean for sports? Well, I'm in TV. The Olympic
(02:58):
ratings for NBC had been staggeringly good, massive, much better
than expected. But what's also interesting? So are the ratings
for Copa America on Fox and for the Euros and
for the WNBA. Well, well, Colin, there's nothing on now. Duh,
there's nothing ever on in July and August. So they're
(03:21):
beating their own ratings. There's nothing ever on now. What
do you think the NFL is just every other year
opening up real football games. Second week of July, COPA
crushed COPA ratings. The Olympics is crushing Olympic ratings. It's
a real story. What's happening. Cable TV subs are going away,
(03:43):
nobody watches TV yet the ratings are through the roof COPA, Euros,
Olympics WNBA. Why because it's an election year and increasingly,
we're being fed doomsdays scenarios, and people want to be happy.
(04:03):
So people are putting down their phones and turning on
something that makes them feel happy. Caitlin Clark Copa America
the Summer Olympics. Americans are much more united than anybody
on their iPhone would acknowledge. But that's hard to sell.
We really all want the same things, but we watched
(04:24):
different news channels for it. But people are tired of
the anks. This weekend, I turn on CNN, didn't plan to,
but they had a Kamala Harris specially it was like
two hours. I didn't plan to watch it, but what
I noticed between her and the other guy running is
she smiled a lot, she was happy, she laughed. It
wasn't constant finger pointing in grievance, and I found myself
(04:47):
sitting there for two hours. It was kind of uplifting.
It didn't really matter because I don't know much about
Kamala Harris other than what I read, but it was
like uplifting, and that's why I'm watching so much of
the Olympics. I watch so much of COPA and the
Euros on Fox. Yesterday I went I went to lunch
with my daughter. It was a nice day out. All
(05:08):
I saw young couples, smiles, dogs, fun, people laughing, playing
pingpong outside. People were happy. You would never know that
if you sit staring at your iPhone all day. So
my point being today is you are getting record numbers
and I'm not talking like beating it by eight percent. No, no, no.
The Olympics, COPA, EUROS, WNBA doubling, tripling, smashing ratings because
(05:35):
it's positive. We want the best in US, and we
also root for our friendly neighbors to the north, Canadian athletes,
and we also are rooting emotionally for Ukrainian athletes. That's
what TV indicators are telling me. In this business, people
really do want good news. You become what you seek,
(05:58):
You become what you consume, you become what you eat,
and you become what you watch on TV. And despite
what the doomsday grifters are selling you, increasingly, it is
crystal clear that Americans want Americans to thrive. We're rooting
for Caitlin Clark, Kopa, Euros, the Olympics, and you don't
(06:21):
have to be from here. We have a lot in common.
We're more united than anybody's gonna let you believe, and
that person at the grocery store, that person on that
park bench may be voting for somebody that you don't like.
It doesn't mean everybody hates everybody. Beware of the grifters.
(06:42):
Congrats to NBC, Fox, ESPN for tremendous summer TV ratings.
When I've been lectured for years, it's all ending soon.
I was told that about newspapers, The New York Times,
Wall Street Journal, Forbes. They're all doing just fine. So
I saw this story again talking about mixed messages. So
(07:07):
for years and years as a college football fan, we
all know the one thing you couldn't do. I mean
it was a death penalty. And I'll pause for a second.
What was the one thing you couldn't do? And then
three years ago you could suddenly do it and you
were encouraged to do it and rewarded for doing it,
buying high school players. That's why my entire career, thirty
(07:32):
years of doing this, I have been saying this for
thirty years. Everybody's paying Everybody stop being a do gooder.
Buckeye fans pointing fingers, Oh yeah, you're not doing it. Michigan,
everybody sec George, everybody, I mean, it's kind of well
known that when Pete Carroll was rolling at USC, ed
(07:55):
Orgeron was as a defensive line coach. Boy, you USC
could get defensive linemen like nobody else. I'll leave it
at that. But people that know, no, they got busted
for Reggie Bush. You think it was the only thing.
And I'm supposed to be a USC homer. Go look
(08:16):
at John Wooden's track record, his number one booster. So
why Bobby Knight to the end resented him. The truth is,
I'm told to be outraged by Pott in sports gambling,
and I never am, because if I wanted to smoke pot,
not saying I ever did, it was always available. And
if I wanted to bet with a bookie, not saying
(08:39):
I ever did, it was always available. Stop screaming at clouds.
The latest controversy the NCED Double A, and I defended
Michigan all year on this. The NCED Double A has
obtained information that States investigators have seen that Connor Stallions
(09:01):
had scouted impermissively scouted at least thirteen Michigan opponents on
fifty eight occasions, including once when he was on the
Michigan state sideline the season opener wearing a bench pass
and a disguise. I actually think that's funny. I mean,
(09:23):
I worry more about Michigan State Security. Some guy walked
up with a crooked, fake mustache, dark sunglasses on a
cloudy day and gave the name Patty O Furniture and
they let him in. I'm not worried about Michigan. I'm
worried about Michigan State Security team. Come on, my name
is Kent c Straight, here's your path. So for the record,
(09:48):
everybody just like cannabis and sports gambling, everybody's stealing signs,
they just do it differently. I do not believe that
guy in the TV picture is the difference between Michigan
and Ohio State. I think it was a better coach,
better planning, and more physicality. But you will go ahead
(10:08):
and blame the guy in the crooked mustache. But over
the last three years, the same timeline of the allegations
against Michigan and Connor Stoun's, over that same timeline, there
has been not only an acknowledgment, but a reality of
college football that the thing I was told would earn
(10:31):
you the death penalty. Buying a high school player is
not only legal it's encouraged. Baylor football coaches at fall
practice this weekend, we're wearing shirts that said we pay players.
So I was told as for years, I said, everybody's
paying everybody. Texas has lambeous out front for recruits. Baylor coaches,
(10:57):
we pay players. I was told for years this was outrageous,
And I said, I know programs, I know college athletes,
I know guys in the NFL, the stars were getting paid,
just like for years and years. Ooh, pot, cannabis legalization,
it's everybody I know that wanted to smote pot can
buy a bag anytime they wanted to. Wasn't ending America? Well,
(11:18):
I told sports gambling, Oh, the NFL for years, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible.
The minute it was legal first, people in the NFL.
Stop trying to sell me outrage. Stop trying to tell
me stuff is a stigma pot. I grew up in
Washington State. It's like the state plant. I worked in
(11:40):
Vegas for seven years. Everybody was betting sports. If you
wanted to make a bet in the game, you could.
So now I'm supposed to believe fake mustache guy in
the sidelines. That's changing outcomes. Come on, man, that's outrageous.
You can buy high schoolers, not even high school seniors,
(12:02):
their programs just so it gets good publicity. They'll go
spend one hundred and fifty bucks in a defensive tackle
his junior year. He may not even show up. Somebody
else will outbit him on signing day and get the
kid that these school spent one hundred and fifty thousand
bucks for so my whole life. It's criminalizing this. It's criminalizing.
(12:22):
The NFL was so anti betting for years. They wouldn't
let Tony Romo, who's now at CBS. They wouldn't let
Tony Romo go to like a fantasy football convention in Vegas.
What everybody plays fantasy football. The NFL was outraged the
(12:43):
minute the Supreme Court ruled yeah, sports gamblings legal in America.
All the NFL owners first guys in, we're buying parts
of this, this this this company owns part of FanDuel.
I got no problem with it. Why would I? I
look at Vegas for seven year So I think Connor
Stallions has the same impact on Michigan football wins. I
(13:08):
believe that as much as you would have been a
Division one football player if your high school coach didn't
have it out for you. I mean between the grifters
on the internet selling you the world is ending today
because of Wall Street and only one person can be
president or everything's going sideways, and that Connor Stallions is
(13:30):
the reason Jim Harball won, although he ended up dominating
in the NFL at Stanford at San Diego. He'll turn
the Chargers around in an hour. I'm sorry, slap them
on the wrist. Bad guys. Shouldn't have done that. But
you know, Patty o furniture with a fake mustache got
(13:53):
into a sidelines. If people were really concerned that was
changing outcomes, Connor Stallion's wouldn't have been anywhere near that bench.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app. We do it every
day every Monday. Excuse me at this time, Colin right,
Colin wrong?
Speaker 1 (14:15):
And here we go where Colin was right. I said
for years, players tend to fall in love with athleticism
over everything else. And in the player's top one hundred
Tyreek Hill, the fastest guy in the league, finished number one.
I like him, but number one, and Lamar Jackson, a
player I love, fastest quarterback in the league finished number two. Again,
(14:37):
I love Lamar Jackson, but Patrick Mahomes four. I mean,
Christian McCaffrey is a faith He's ahead of Patrick Mahomes.
Come on, I mean, the greatest quarterback talent wise perhaps
in league history, who keeps hoisting trophies or at minimum
getting to Super Bowls should be number one. Where Colin
(15:01):
was wrong, I had said last week. I think it
was on Thursday, I was told that brand and Ayyuka
the Niners, was in within a forty eight hour range
of signing a new deal with San Francisco. Now he's
a very emotional player, young star receiver. But now there
is a gap between the Niners and Brandon Aiyuk that's developed.
(15:24):
There's one story out there that they're thinking of moving him.
Now again, I was told by a former player who's
given me through the years a lot of good information
that they were close. But I'm wrong. As of now,
people I respect are reporting he may get moved, which
is what I said in the off season. I think McCaffrey, Debo,
(15:48):
Kyle Kittle, Trent Williams are more valuable than Auke. He
may be more talented than all of them. But that's
where we stand.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Where Colin was right.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Aaron Rodgers, whether it's the Packers or it's the Jets,
you're just gonna get radio hits. Poking the ribs of
his coaches against authority in this past week. He didn't
need to go there, but he took a shot at
his New York head coach, Robert Sla Yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
I mean, that's Robert's decision. I've never told him I
don't want to play in the preseason. If he decides
he wants me to play against the Giants, I'll strap
it up and look forward to that.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
I don't have any restrictions.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
I'm doing keepers rollouts. So it was news to me
yesterday when he said I wasn't gonna play in the
first two. Eric sent me that, thank you, but we
hadn't even had a conversation yet about that.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
Green Bay or New York doesn't matter if that's Aaron
where Colin was wrong. I am a huge Steph Curry
fan and supporter, but he's had a bad Olympics. He
just can't find his rhythm. He's actually has the worst
shooting percentage on the team. I did not predict that
he's only averaging seven points a game. Now Foeba is different,
(17:10):
more contact is allowed, lane can be all clogged up.
It's just a different sport. He has not risen to
the moment and he's been surprisingly out of rhythm. And
I was wrong where Colin was right. I said pre
draft if any quarterback was going to struggle and immediately,
(17:32):
it would be Drake May of New England. I don't
think anybody, including Caleb Williams could win here or maybe
even be productive here. And according to stories, oh yeah,
Drake May three for eleven on Saturday, full team drills,
three throwaways, three sacks, drop passes. The headline in Nessen
(17:56):
was supporting cast is killing the Patriots rookie. So it's
gotten bad quickly. Not all his fault, but it's just
the reality where Colin was right. Now we can go
to Justin Fields. There is a story Arthur Smith this
week in fact this weekend said he adds a different
(18:19):
element to our offense. And this is what we said.
He's more athletic, he's more in his athletic prime. Is
that all he needs is snaps and reps with his teammates,
his younger teammates. He's going to steal that locker room.
And nothing against Russell, but he is declining. Pete bailed
(18:40):
on him, Sean Payton failed on him. So this story
is what we talked about in the last week or two.
That don't be shocked with his calf injury if he
just steals the locker room and Arthur Smith saying with
Russell Wilson listening, justin adds a different dimension where Colin
was raw boy. The Philly which I proclaimed the best
(19:01):
baseball team easily, are going mired in an ugly slump.
They have won two of their last ten big series
with the Dodgers coming up. They're four and eleven since
the All Star break. And Bryce Harper, now power hitters
get in slumps, right, but he's in a doozy patting
one fifty six since the All Star break with sixteen strikeouts.
(19:27):
So the Phillies a team that can do a little
bit of everything, a deep bullpen, starting pitching, hit for
power right now, Wheels have come off the dog days
of summer where Colin was right I said before the
draft in terms of fit Bo Nicks, who's got a
(19:47):
little Drew Brees may fit with his coach better than
any rookie quarterback. And Sean Payton again went to the podium,
and he keeps bringing up the SI similarities with bow
Nicks and a quarterback you've heard of.
Speaker 5 (20:05):
You see pretty good pocket sense. Didn't take a lot
of sacks. I think he knows when the play's over,
time to go, and then I think he can make
plays when he's going. Breeze was one of those guys.
He just he was a tough sack ball came out
and I think bow has traits like.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
That where Colin was right. Finally, Daniel Jones admitted he
did not like the New York Giants Hard Knock series
on HBO. He said, it's been hard to watch it.
I don't love the NFL forcing teams to do it,
especially losing teams that could need and use momentum and
(20:49):
some secrets. But this thing, the John Mara, Joe Shane,
the GM moment in that room talking about Saquon Bark
felt disorganized, unplanned, and sketchy. I don't think this has
helped the Giants at all. I think maybe they forgot
(21:09):
the cameras were on, but them talking to teams moving
up in the draft was a clear indictment on a
young quarterback Daniel Jones, who's struggling and doesn't need it.
And Jones acknowledges he's watched and it hasn't been good.
Where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
On a Monday, be sure to catch live editions of
The Herd weekdays and Noononeaster nine em Pacific.
Speaker 6 (21:35):
Hey it's me Rob Parker. Check out my weekly MLB podcast,

baseball talk, featuring the biggest names of newsmakers in the sport.
Whether you believe in analytics or the I Test, We've
got all the bases covered. New episodes dropped every Thursday,
(21:56):
So do yourself a favor and listen to Inside the
Park with Rob Parker on the iHeartRadio app or wherever
you get your podcast.
Speaker 1 (22:05):
The very well connected Fox Sports NFL analyst, former player,
former Scout, Panthers and Seahawks catch Bucky Brooks on Speak
today at five Eastern on FS one. So we're gonna
dig deep on some of this stuff. So here's a
prime example where I didn't know this until five minutes ago.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
With you is that.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
I said. Somebody, a former NFL quarterback, pretty good player,
really good player, came to me about two months ago
and he said, don't be surprised if JJ McCarthy and
Bowe Nicks because of their coach aren't really good. Really quickly,
he said him, be very careful about Caleb Jaden and
Drake May defensive coaches, especially in New England. So he
(22:48):
said a lot of this stuff for rookie quarterbacks is situational,
like offensive coach, more risk taking, more supportive. And he said,
go back to Mahomes first couple of years when he
get into the weeds mechanically, and he'd bring him right.
You have a defensive head coach, that may not be
the case. You'll get bad habits. So I want to
start with Drake May because my thing is I don't
care who gets drafted there. This is an uphill climb.
(23:10):
And then you told me something during the break which
I didn't know, which is why we should be patient
with Drake May.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (23:18):
So anyone who dug into Drake May's background you have
to understand, like Drake May, I went to North Carolina.
Speaker 4 (23:24):
His father was in North Carolina before I.
Speaker 7 (23:26):
Went there, so he's he comes from a family of ballers,
but where he went to high school and Charlotte like
is full of like former ballers kids in those things.
But he didn't get a chance to play his final
season because of COVID.
Speaker 4 (23:38):
He then goes to North Carolina.
Speaker 7 (23:39):
He's playing behind Sam Howell, so he yeah, without playing.
So then he played, had a great red shirt freshman year,
sophomore year, then he played his final season. But those
two seasons so up the last four seasons, he's only played.
Speaker 4 (23:52):
Two of them.
Speaker 7 (23:53):
He only logged twenty six starts during his time. And
so to have crazy expectations for a play who hasn't
a lot, look, he's not doing them justice. And also
if you're the Patriots, you have to understand that that's
why you haven't heard them talk about the rush to
put them on the field. They talked about Jacoby Brissett
being able to go and play and those things. But
(24:13):
also know this Elliott Wolf who is the son of
Ron Wolf, and they all spend a lot of time
in the Packers' organization. We're sitting here now talking about
Jordan Love and their developmental model. Their developmental model is
much like old school quarterback sits, he waits, he learns,
he waits, he learns, and then when he gets an opportunity,
he's ready for that opportunity. So be faced with Drake Maye.
(24:37):
It may be a minute before we really see him
on the field playing.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
What are realistic expectations? You watch probably every Caleb Williams start.
Now he goes from a highly creative offensive coach, kind
of a risk taker, to a defensive coach on the
hot seat in a big media market, with an offensive
line that's not as bad as advertised, but it's it
may be a sending, but it's a work in rush.
(25:01):
What realistic numbers wins? How do you view him?
Speaker 7 (25:04):
Well, I think the Bears have an opportunity to close
the gap on the competition, but I'm gonna say this
that division is tougher than anyone anticipated. Detroit is legit,
the Packers are good, and Minnesota is going to be
feisty because you talked about Kevin O'Connell and what he
can do. The Bears have a team that on paper
already should be in that eight to ten model based
on how the defense finished the weapons that they added
(25:26):
on offense. Roma Dunza Keenan Allen. You have DJ Moore
coming back, so there's firepower there. The thing that you
need from Caleb is, hey man, I don't need spectacular Caleb.
Speaker 4 (25:36):
I just need you to distribute a ball. Let the
playmakers do the work.
Speaker 7 (25:39):
If he plays within himself and plays kind of like Heisman, Caleb, Look,
his numbers should be solid. I wouldn't say four thousand yards,
but I would think anywhere from three thousand to thirty
five hundred yards, maybe twenty to twenty five touchdowns. That'd
be a solid, solid rookie season for Caleb Williams. But
I don't expect them to be an aerial circus that
(26:00):
puts all of it on his shoulders. I expect them
still to lean towards the defense. You talked about eber Fluss.
They're going to score points, but I still think they're
going to try and play conflimentary football to allow the
defense to kind of set the table for the offense.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
When you were breaking down his game in college, a
lot of high leverage games, Well, is there anything that
worries you about Caleb?
Speaker 7 (26:23):
I would say he gets Look, gunslingers are funny because
you need to let them go to the line, But
then you need to be able to bring them back.
And so what makes him great is his ability to
create outside of the structure of the offense.
Speaker 4 (26:36):
He's terriffing in that.
Speaker 7 (26:38):
But can he play within the confines of the offense.
It's one thing to be running around and all over
the place making plays. It's another thing to play it
as scripted. Because in the National Football League, the best
guys can play on the script and give you a
little off the script. He doesn't need to venture off
the script just to make plays because he's comfortable. Can't
(27:01):
he be patient and discipline enough to take what the
defense is giving him and then in those high pressure
moments then venture outside the pocket to make the special
place happen.
Speaker 1 (27:10):
So you know, my friend John Middelkoff and I were
talking about this, is that to his contract is interesting.
I am not a huge Dak fan. I love his
I love his EQ, his IQ. His adult Dak is
the best podium quarterback since Brady. Like Eli was good
(27:33):
at this talk. Didn't say much. Jeters all time at
that New York. But I think there's some limitations. Throwing
the ball. Tua throws a pretty ball, but this league
is defined by December, January, and February games. And I
look at that contract, forget the injuries, and I'm like,
the AFC's best teams are all north. If you look
(27:56):
at two his numbers under just fifty degrees, under thirty,
under fifty, it's it's close to not being backup stuff.
So I look at that number and I think, is
that a number the ghost of Dan Marino. Hey will
be viable, We'll win games, we'll be exciting. But that's
(28:18):
a lot of money for somebody that I don't see
in January going to Cincinnati, Kansas City, Baltimore, Buffalo. I mean,
what did you make of that contract?
Speaker 4 (28:27):
Well, look, look is the going rate.
Speaker 7 (28:29):
I knew when Trevor Lawrence got fifty five million that
two and everyone else was going to come in at
that number because that's the going rate for the young
emerging quarterback for.
Speaker 4 (28:39):
Two n Tegoboy lower.
Speaker 7 (28:40):
It was important for the Dolphins to get him done
because everything that they've done is really built this offense
around to it.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
In the strengths of his game, he is a guy
that kind of is.
Speaker 7 (28:50):
The black blackjack dealer that deals with the casino quicker quicker.
Great ball comes out gets into a cast to playmakers
that are fast and they make it happen. When you
talk about the the inclement weather and the road to
the championship having to go through those cold weather cities.
Speaker 4 (29:06):
Well, now that they know that.
Speaker 7 (29:08):
It's really important for Miami, they need to get out
the fast starts. They need to chalk up wins and
see if they can get home field advantage. They are
a team that needs to play like the Indianapolis Colts
played when Peyton Manning was there.
Speaker 4 (29:21):
In the Dome. You want home games, you don't want
to go on the road.
Speaker 7 (29:24):
It's really important that Mike McDaniel figures out a way
to get this team off the fast starts. So in
the postseason they're playing in South Florida because that's where
it comes to. Tyreek Hill talked to him a week
ago and he talked about, hey man, we can't go
to these cold weather things and the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (29:40):
We have to learn from that. We have to get
games at home.
Speaker 7 (29:43):
So I think you'll see them really make a push
to try and get home field, not only for the
first round, but for the second rounds. They see if
we can make the road to the Super Bowl go
through South Florida.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
That would help bo Nick Sean Payton, Did you like
the pick? Do you like the fit? What's your forecast?
Speaker 7 (30:00):
I like to pick and I like the big because
bow Knicks had the most experience of any quarterback that
we've seen come through the draft process sixty four starts.
If you can imagine just how much experience, good, bad,
what he's gone through. That he understands that. The other
part that I think is a good fit. When you
talk to bow Knicks, super mature, not very emotional when
(30:23):
it comes to his play. He's a professional. You kind
of understand that it's everything to him. Son of a coach,
has all of that going for you, and then you
put them with Sean Payton. And for Sean Payton, I'm
sure he's looking at Drew Brees, the best quarterback that
he had up under him. He wanted somebody that was similar,
that could give him the coach on the field, that
could operate in that short intermediate passing game, but was
(30:47):
athletic enough to extend places. Bow Knicks can do all
of those things. Now it's on Sean to be able
to assess what young quarterback can do and put him
in a situation where he can play to his strips.
If he does that and if they're to run the football,
both knicks to have success from day one.
Speaker 1 (31:03):
So I've watched two coaches bail on Russell Wilson very
respected coaches. Mike Tomlin tends to be very much a
player's coach. He's got his guys back, and that's a
young locker room, right They're gonna they expect some draft
picks to play. I can foresee a situation where Justin
(31:26):
is really liked in that locker room. And if you
look at that schedule a week like nine on, there
are two game losing streaks like it's brutal. Is Justin
to the very last game Bucky in Chicago losing was
loved guys, and they knew they were get Kaleb and
they were all like, no, we're justin guys. So there's
clearly something. There's a Relatability's not Rich Russell is. Russell's
(31:51):
the icon I've seen in two locker rooms. Russell not
necessarily connect with other stars. This feels like a little
bit of a powdered keg half injury. Justin getting starts
guys watching his hyper athleticism how's this gonna play out
in your opinion?
Speaker 7 (32:08):
Man, that's the thing, Like Russell had pole position, because
I think that's what Mike do want to talk about.
He had pole position coming in, but the injury opened
the door for Justin Fields to give reps against the
number one defense. Everything that you're hearing out of there, ignore.
Speaker 4 (32:23):
What the coaches are saying. Listen to what the players
are saying.
Speaker 7 (32:26):
Patrick Queen talking about his athleticism, how he's dealing inside
the pocket, but also the athleticism outside of it. The
decoordinator Tarol Austin talking about, Man, this has been so
good because he's getting us ready to play Lamar Jackson.
Speaker 4 (32:40):
Like, think about that, Like that's.
Speaker 7 (32:42):
A compliment for them to talk about, not that he's
Lamar Jackson, but for them to say that this is
getting us ready to play a two time MVP. He's
doing something in practice that is catching their eye for Russell.
When Russell gets back, Russell has to find a way
to close that off, just kind of shut that off
so he can't give them a reason. If it's close,
(33:03):
you go to the young guy. And so Russell has
to come back and he has to fire on all cylinders.
Speaker 4 (33:08):
The offense has to look different when he's in there.
Speaker 7 (33:10):
If not, there're gonna be guys that look towards justin
to say, hey, coach, we might as well give the
young guy of the ball and let's go.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
We may need to run it more.
Speaker 7 (33:17):
It may look different, but there's something that he has
done to catch the eyes of the defense. Players always
tell you the truth about what they think on the players,
because the players don't have an agenda when it comes
to other players.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
They want the best player.
Speaker 7 (33:32):
And when the defense talks about justin the way they have,
you just don't glow over somebody just to.
Speaker 4 (33:37):
Make him feel good.
Speaker 7 (33:38):
There's something that he's doing in practice that makes him
feel like if he was playing.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
They would have a shot to win.
Speaker 1 (33:43):
So there's you know, we were talking about this with
Brandon Ayuk, obviously a great player. But I said earlier,
if you ask me the ten most valuable people with
the Niners, I actually think Christian McCaffrey and Shanahan. I
think Debo and Kittle's physicality. Trent Williams maybe more valuable
(34:04):
than all of them. I said it earlier that if
Trent Williams announced that I'm retiring their host, they're in
big trouble. If Brandon Ayuk said, I'm not playing Deebo,
Christian Kittle, Cowling, the kid from Arizona pearsalt like they
can win games. So this is not a shot at
Brandon Ayuke. It's not a criticism, but people confuse Bucky
(34:27):
talented and valuable. Yeah, and I look at Ayuk and
I'm like, okay, young man. First two years we weren't sure. Good,
third year great, fourth, I get San Francisco holding kind
of firm on this. Am I wrong?
Speaker 4 (34:42):
No, they should hold for him.
Speaker 7 (34:44):
So if we think about the pecking order of who
should get paid, my opinion no, no, But on that
list because they're guys, they need to get paid. Trent
Williams has to get paid. He has to get paid right.
Speaker 1 (34:52):
Now, right now.
Speaker 4 (34:53):
Brod Purdy has to get paid.
Speaker 7 (34:55):
He has to get paid significantly after the season. So
if you're the Niners in you're looking, we have Brandon
Aiyuk on a fifth year option.
Speaker 4 (35:03):
We don't have to do anything.
Speaker 7 (35:04):
All the language in the CBA is in the Niners favor,
so they don't have to do anything. Yeah, and they're
playing nice because they're letting them hold in. They don't
have to do that. So they have to make a
decision on what's the number, and if it exceeds that number,
they have to be like, Okay, well we can either
trade them or whatever, but here's the number. Because when
(35:25):
you look at their team and the way they're constructed,
you're right, Christ McCaffrey is most valuable. You have Rock Purty,
you have Trim Williams, there are other guys, and he's
a very valuable and impactful player for them.
Speaker 4 (35:37):
But how much are they willing to pay? Are they?
Speaker 7 (35:39):
Look, they can go DeVante Smith numbers twenty six million,
twenty seven, but are you gonna pay him thirty five
and then pay Debo a ton of money. That's where
the rub comes in. And I know he wants to
get paid. He deserves to get paid. But the Niners
also have to look at this. When we pay Brock Purty,
how many big money players can we continue to keep,
(36:00):
and who's going to be the next iteration of the Niners?
Because look, is this year and next year then they're
gonna have to flip this team.
Speaker 4 (36:07):
Yes, in a way, and so is.
Speaker 7 (36:08):
Brandon Niuk part of that nucleus if he is what
number do we need to pay him to ensure that
he's a part of it for the long haul?
Speaker 1 (36:15):
Yeah, it is. I used the comp earlier. I said
when Cooper cup has missed games, the Rams have been fine.
When Andrew Whitworth left, they were a tire fire for
about two years. Up front? Is that Whitworth, like Williams,
could have played but he had one hundred plus million
(36:37):
smart guy, worried about his body. Trents a bright guy
that people we all knew. McVeigh was brilliant. Despite that,
when Whitworth left, it all came crashing down. And I
think because you know, again, Stafford had some injuries. Purty's
not a big body. He's not Josh Allen or Big
Ben or Cam. I think if Trent Williams retired tomorrow,
(37:00):
I don't even think they're a super Bowl. I don't
think they're as viable as a franchise.
Speaker 7 (37:03):
Well, I still think they would be pretty good, but
not as good as he is.
Speaker 4 (37:07):
Now.
Speaker 7 (37:07):
What I would say is he's a freak of nature.
You shouldn't be thirty six years old to still be
the best tackle in the movie at his feet, like
you shouldn't be able to move like that, and when
you hear people talk about him, they talk about him
playing pick up basketball. If Trim Williams on the floor,
he's the point guard like he's that athletic. You just
don't see guys do what he's able to do. And
I think we might even take him for granted. You
(37:28):
don't see a guy because I've seen him where they
motioned him. They send him across and he just ear
holds guys on the move. You don't see guys disathletic,
this nasty. That set the tone. Kyle Shanahan and John
Lynch certainly understand what they have in him. He's the priority.
You need to get him done first. Then you go
address to wide receiver. But Trent Williams has to have
his contract adjusted because the way that they paid other guys,
(37:50):
including Tristan Wurths, who's a great player. But this dude
is O tackle number one. He is the one that
everyone is looking for in the draft.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
So I'm not a conspiracy theorist in a word where
they're everywhere, but I'm not. No, I'm kind of a
wet blanket to conspiracy theres but I'll throw one out there.
So Jerry Jones has trophies three and he loves Dak,
but the numbers don't lie. Is that when Dak came
(38:19):
to the Cowboys, they had the best offensive line for
about a five to six year period. Zeke was the
best back arguably in the league. He had an offensive coach,
mentor and Jason Garrett, and he didn't make any money,
made Jerry a lot of money. But the sense was,
I think Dak was a bit overvalued because I thought
the team carried him more than they carried him. And
then as they had to move off in Amari Cooper,
(38:41):
the O line aged, Dak had to throw more. Zeke
aged the numbers, that data became pretty clear that if
you asked Dak to throw forty or more, that's not
the recipe. He's not Lamar Josh, He's not that. And
so in this offseason they are so c D Lamb reliant.
They now have the worst running back room in the league,
(39:01):
below average tight end room, and you cross your fingers
on CD. And my take is Jerry. My conspiracy theory
is Jerry's like, listen, I've got three rings. Dak makes
me relevant, But I want this team for both McCarthy
and Dak. My next move is my last big one.
(39:23):
I want to see you too. Without a great old line,
without a number two, without a run game. It gives
Jerry negotiating leverage and power if Dak interceptions, He's not
rooting against that of he's rooting for him. But they
have been so quiet in the last year. Let players move,
and it's like it is a contract year. It's got
(39:47):
a little feeling like, Hey, I've got my trophies, I
want another. But what I'm not going to do is
give McCarthy another extension, Dak a five year deal at
sixty four a year. That's my conspiracy. Jerry is willing
to take a mini step back to protect long term
the cap.
Speaker 7 (40:07):
Maybe, like I mean, he's in the business making money,
so it's a business like he wants to make money
off the brand as one of the more popular brands,
if not the most popular brand in the National Football League.
I think they misplayed their hand when it comes to
Dak Prescott. Because Dak Prescott they can't franchise him. He's
going to make significant money. He's going to be in
the sixty million dollar range, whether the Cowboys spam or
(40:28):
someone else pays him. But the Cowboys are kind of
boxed in because it's not only paying him. Is you
got to pay d cd Lamb top of the market money,
you gotta pay Michael Parsons top of the market money,
and then potentially you're talking about Dak Prescott. So three
guys commanding top of the market money really impacts your
(40:49):
ability to build a team around Dak Prescott. So maybe
this is another proven year situation, but I feel like
they've done that three or four times with Dak Prescott,
and every time Prescott has come out on the other
side of it looking good. Look, I think part of
this might be Dak saying no, no, no, I'm good.
There's never been somebody his age in the prime hit
(41:12):
the market as a quarterback, and so we can say
a lot of things and people say, oh, he's not tough, five,
I know this, he's.
Speaker 4 (41:18):
Top eight or better.
Speaker 7 (41:19):
So top eight quarterback that hits the market in the
league that is driven by quarterback play. The Cowboys may
not be able to afford him if he gets to
the open market, and they may be fine, But my
question would be to Jerry Jones, who's next, Who's the
next quarterback to take over? Are you willing to say
that Trey Lance is going to be the next guy.
Are you willing to go into draft and say, I'm
(41:40):
a fine somebody in this look the draft that is
not quite as great as it was. The Cowboys should
go to Dak and get this done. They may not,
but I don't know. I think Jerry wants to see
what it looks like. But I think Jerry is playing
himself and.
Speaker 4 (41:56):
Dak is going to be that ends up with the
bag laughing.
Speaker 1 (42:00):
That before every time, he's played it very well.
Speaker 7 (42:03):
He's played it every time, and he knows there's gonna
be a handful of teams.
Speaker 4 (42:06):
With a market.
Speaker 7 (42:07):
So let's just say, I've heard you talk about it.
The Raiders, the Seahawks, the Giants. I mean there's another team.
Speaker 4 (42:14):
That we Carolina.
Speaker 7 (42:15):
So all he needs is a couple of teams to
get into the bid and war. And now what would
be sixty million becomes sixty five million, and he signs
a contract that blows everybody away, much like Deshaun Watson
signed a contract that was different. And say, and you've
heard Dak talked about paying it forward, not only the
brotherhood of his team, Because I heard the clip that
(42:36):
you played. He talked about setting it up for the
next man. That next man may not be the next
man in Dallas. It may be who's the next quarterback
to get paid. My job is to raise the market
for that person.
Speaker 1 (42:47):
Yeah, I think Dak ensures a lack of chaos, and
there's about a third of the team. I tend to
think he's closer to the ninth the twelfth best quarterback.
You could say five to eight, but we'd both agree
if Dak's your quarterback, adult competitive, you win. You may
(43:07):
not hoist a trophy. But the Jay Glazer always said it.
Where you don't want to be in this league is
driving to the ballpark on Sunday and thinking we're a
seven and a half point dog. We got to play
perfect to win. It's a miserable league.
Speaker 7 (43:20):
Okay, So quietly they've won twelve games in each of
the last three seats.
Speaker 4 (43:23):
Run so like there are a lot of people that
would take that.
Speaker 7 (43:26):
Like we can talk about the Dallas Cowboys being the.
Speaker 1 (43:29):
Ninety version Chiefs.
Speaker 7 (43:30):
Everybody would yeah, like they could be the eighties nineties
versions of the Atlanta Braves. They won a bunch of
division titles that were always there didn't win but one
World Series, but they were always in the conversation. As
an owner, you have to make a decision, do I
always want to be in the conversation or am my
loading up for that one big win?
Speaker 4 (43:47):
Then I fall back to irrelevance.
Speaker 1 (43:48):
That's been Tampa's model. Tampa every twelve years is great
for a year, and by the way, it works for Tampa.
But Tampa's not the Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (43:57):
Cowboys the brand.
Speaker 7 (43:59):
The brand is you always want to They have six
primetime games, so we could talk a lot about the
Cowboys being underachievers. Six primetime games. They don't put them
on TV if people don't tune into Washington. And so
when you have Dak Prescott and you're able to win
twelve games, there is some comfort in knowing, yes, we're
always going to be in the postseason because that's what
he guarantees you.
Speaker 4 (44:19):
He's always going to get you to the tournament.
Speaker 7 (44:21):
Now, what you do in the tournament, he has to
play better in the playoffs. But they're always in the tournament.
You can't win the tournament until you're.
Speaker 4 (44:27):
In the tournament.
Speaker 1 (44:28):
Plucky Good Senior again Man Good being off
