You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Here we go our number three live in Los Angeles.
It's the Hurt wherever you may be and however you
may be listening. Thank you for making us part of
your day. So the Minnesota Vikings cannot Jmat get a
break on quarterbacks. So back in twenty sixteen, remember that
(00:47):
Teddy Bridgewater head up horrible accident at practice, non contact
before the start of the regular season. Teddy was promising
people really were into Teddy Bridgewater horrible non contact injury
before the season. And then recently Kirk Cousins ruptured, he
(01:11):
was playing well, ruptured in Achilles and now JJ McCarthy
out for the year. Torn meniscus just had surgery in
the Twin Cities and he is out for the remainder
of the season. So they you know, it's interesting when
I look at the Vikings, I think just my takeaway
as Minneapolis sports, Minnesota sports generally well run, just don't
(01:34):
get titles. You know, Twins, Tea Wolves have been shaky,
but always competitive. Vikings have been I think well run
for most of my life. Never audaciously poorly run, maybe
never brilliantly run, but they got their stadium done. They
have They're always viable. I mean, Kirk Cousins was five
(01:55):
hundred against Aaron Rodgers, so I mean it's like if
you can have a Hall of Famer division and you
go five hundred against him, that's a pretty well run operation.
They've had great receivers, great pass rushers. You know, I
think most of their coaches have been you know, Mike
Zimmer criticized him, but one of the smarter defensive guys.
They get the tall Sean McVay, so they just can't
(02:16):
get a break with quarterback health.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
I think I'm gonna back off. Remember we did the
predictions for the NFC playoffs. I think I'm gonna back
off the Vikings just the more I read you know,
the Addison, the.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
High so they were surprise seven.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
So I need to find a replacement. It could be
your rams. I'm looking.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
I'm kicking the tires on the Bears again. Something about
this team, there's some juice. Maybe it's the hard knocks
impact Caleb's debut.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
I don't know. I'm excited about the Bears.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
You and I agreed on most You like the Vikings
more than I did. I like Washington in the NFC,
in the AFC. You like the Jets more than I did.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
I also like the Chargers, but I'm I think I'm
backing off them as well with this Herbert foot thing.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
By the way, Aaron Rodgers was on a morning show
in New York yesterday wf AN. There's a new book
written by Ian O'Connor, and Aaron was asked about it.
Speaker 5 (03:09):
I'm willing to say non cliche things every time the
same time we sit down for something like this. Guy
not worried about the repercussions from it. But yeah, there's
some interesting stories. I'm sure they come out of it.
There will be ones that are not based in a
lot of fact, to be honest, a lot of the
(03:30):
stuff that was in there. I mean, it's twenty plus
years old, and I commend him for the time he
spent on it, but it's not a book that I
you know asked him to write for me. He wrote
on his own.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Five hundred sources. If Ian O'Connor wrote it, it's the truth. Sorry,
crazy people. And Aaron continues to say, you know, I
don't care about criticism. Actually you do. This is why
you respond to it. When people go out of their
way to tell you they don't care about something, they
bring it up because they do. He's been thin skinned.
That's not a shot, that's his reality. Eric Mangini and
(04:06):
I said this. At one point, the producer for Wfan
asked Aaron about the Malaysian air disaster because and I
think it was a fair question, and he asked it earnestly.
He wasn't trying to be a jerk. He was because
I think you look at Aaron as somebody that goes
down those rabbit holes, and you know a lot of
it's Kouki Mandooki to me. Mangini talked about sort of
(04:27):
Aaron's personality and that he's a bit exhausted by it,
though he supported him.
Speaker 6 (04:32):
I was really high on Aaron Rodgers going to the Jets,
and obviously I went through that experience with Brett Favre
going to the Jets when I was there, and I
think he can be really good. It's just I'm so
frustrated with all the other stuff that he's bringing. It's
whatever he thinks at the moment is absolutely right and
is absolutely the way it should be. And then things
(04:55):
can't be as they appear. They have to be some
sort of diabolical from the deep state to overthrow the
government or create world domination. You know, everybody's entitled their
opinion and their thoughts. I just don't know if this
is the most productive thing for them to win football
games this year.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Yeah, I mean, listen, that's an epidemic in America. It's funny.
I work with people in the building. I don't know
a lot of conspiracy theorists, but the ones there are
get a lot of attention. There's only one quarterback in
the league that buys into him and goes a mile
deep and does darkness retreats. It's Aaron, I think. I
think Aaron in Green Bay was seen as talented, but
(05:37):
you know, a little subversive. I'm not sure if New
York is built for him. I'm really not We'll see.
But the story of the day is JJ McCarthy's out
for the Vikings. But I think, you know, people will say,
you guys talk about Aaron Rodgers a lot. Well, you
O'Connor wrote a book. There's a reason there's some mystery
with him. He's different. I do find myself rooting for him,
(06:00):
not against him. And the book, by the way, I
thought he came across as a sympathetic figure in the
Farv chapters. I thought Brett Farr basically hazed him for
several years and the Green Bay Front Office couldn't make
a decision. I felt bad for Aaron in the book.
I honestly did. I was like, I mean, you know,
he made his own bed a couple of times with
poking people calling Farv Grandpa, which he acknowledges is true,
(06:24):
but it was. It was rough, and you see where
some of that, you know, chip on the shoulder stuff
comes from, you know, And so I got a little
chip on the shoulder sometimes too. Some stuff that happens
when you're eighteen nineteen twenty. It doesn't go away. You
can go to therapy all you want, it just doesn't
go away. It's who you are. So Aaron's got a
little bit of that, and it's just funny. He went
to the biggest city from the quietest city. So I'm
(06:46):
kind of fascinated by if he stays upright this year
and and kind of struggles and the team's okay, if
they get their ears box going to San Francisco. I
don't think they will. I think it's a very competitive game.
I've got issues with the Niners as well, but I
think the whole New York experiment is it's a downgrade.
The Jets are not as well run as the Packers.
(07:12):
That's just a fact. So this is a downgrade stafford
of the Rams. Upgrade Brady to the Bucks, an offensive
upgrade Bruce Arians, Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, upgrade Russell Wilson
to Denver. Had Hack it not been there and Sean
Payton was the coach, it may have been more seamless.
(07:33):
Although they didn't get along, it wouldn't have been as
bad as it was year one. But generally, when you know,
it's funny when quarterbacks go to new teams, it's very
hit and miss. You can go back. Now, Montana went
to Kansas City and they didn't win Super Bowls, but
they won. And then Russell Wilson didn't work and Tom
Brady did and Matt Stafford did, and Jared Goff has.
(07:55):
So I think you'll get more successes than failures, but
you generally have to give up draft capital. It's usually
because you missed on a quarterback. And the other thing
is most of these places, like Kirk Cousins goes to Atlanta,
there are some offensive pieces and an offensive line in
ownership that is above average. Arthur Blank's a good owner,
(08:18):
great o' line, excellent pieces. Brady went to Tampa, great weapons,
excellent defense. Bruce Arians Stafford goes to McVeigh, Andrew Whitworth,
Cooper Cup. You know it's and I mean even Russell
Wilson went to Courtland Sutton, Jerry Judy. You're like, oh,
they got some interesting pieces.
Speaker 7 (08:39):
You know.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Aaron goes to the Jets. The owner's impulsive, the GM's
not proven, the coach is young. In defense, the O
line was a mess and they got one receiver. So
this is a bit of a harder lift for Aaron
Rodgers than it was for Stafford or Brady or even
Russell Wilson. All their talent was on defense, the coach's defense.
They whiffed a quarterback left tack. This is not easy.
(09:02):
So it wouldn't be easy for Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes.
So I don't want to this. This isn't like Aaron.
This is all on Aaron. This is a big lift.
The division's tough, the O line's still in a rebuild.
One receiver in one back, you can trust, a coach
you don't love, and a GM that's unproven and impulsive. Ownership.
(09:23):
New York is not an easy lift. I mean, basically,
Matt Stafford gets better owner, better roster, better coach, better weapons.
Not that it was an easy lift, but they had
some They had some cultural momentum like that. The RAMS
was like, oh, here's the Mercedes. It's already humming. We're
just gonna get the better version of it. I mean,
(09:45):
I mean, you go look at Tom Brady after they
drafted Tristan Wurf's they are stacked offensively. They bring in
gronk ab You're like, how many Patriots on offense would
have started for the first year bucks two. I mean, honestly,
after hit two. This is a This is a tough
lift in New York. There's not a lot of momentum here.
(10:06):
Albert Breer is joining us from Ravens Camp today, fourteenth camp.
He's visited, by the way, there was there's some more nine.
Oh you're eighteen nineteen, My bad, says fourteen tier. Okay,
Raven's camp. There's some news here on Mark Andrews. Can
you update us?
Speaker 7 (10:23):
Yeah, so he was involved in a car accident. They
don't think it's going to impact his ability to play,
but it'll probably be out of practice for a couple
of days. I don't think it's anything to be too
concerned about. Obviously, they feel fortunate that he's okay. They
examined him, he was in meetings. Yeah, it looks like
everything's NBA.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Right, Okay. JJ McCarthy out for the season. I had
said earlier, tough early schedule. To me, if there's any benefit,
and obviously your heart goes out to JJ McCarthy, the
benefit is there'll be no distractions, because if you look
at the early schedule, there's some l's on this thing,
and there may be a losing streak. They're not. I mean,
you go San Francisco, Houston, Green Bay Jets, that is
(11:02):
a rough month. My take is they're going to ride
and die with Sam Darnold. There'll be no distractions. That
was my takeaway your thoughts.
Speaker 7 (11:12):
Yeah, I think they were prepared for this, and I
don't think the plan was ever to force JJ McCarthy
out there. One thing I do know about Kevin O'Connell
was regardless of who he drafted, you know, and they
had talked about moving up for Drake May. Obviously they
move up the spot to get JJ McCarthy. They were
going to have a detailed plan as far as how
they were going to deploy the rookie quarterback in the spring,
(11:34):
in the summer, and what benchmarks he was going to
have to hit for them to think about putting that
kid out in the field, and so to execute that
sort of plan and to build some flexibility into what
you're doing and when you're going to play him, you
have to have a plan that you like that's an
alternate to that quarterback, and they do have one in
Sam Donald. They love what they saw at the end
in Carolina from if you go back and you look
(11:56):
at the fourth quarter of that Ravens Niners game from
Christmas Night last year, and I know, look, I know
it was a blowout, garbage time whatever, but Donald looked
like he was playing faster and looked like he was
playing more decisively with Kyle Shanahan and the talent around him,
and so like the feeling is some of that shoot
transfer over with Kevin O'Connell as his coach, with Justin Jefferson,
(12:17):
Jordan Addison, TJ. Hockins and Christian Daras saw all the
people that are there. They're confident that they're going to
get a better version of Sam Donald. And you know,
maybe this winds up being like the Baker Mayfield or
Gino Smith stories, where you have guys who were highly drafted,
who were really talented, who fell on their face a
little bit in their first spot, picking themselves back up
and being better the second time around.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
So Drake May six snaps and I'm thinking to myself
in New England, I'm thinking, listen, you got to get
him snaps because yeah, I'm I mean, is that why
that is weird? Right? Like I mean Bo Nicks took
like through twenty one passes, Drake May got six snaps.
(13:01):
What's going on?
Speaker 7 (13:02):
Well, Denver's getting bet Bonnick's ready to start and knowing
what's not doing that with Drake May and I think
to their credit, they're going to prioritize his development because
they felt like when they drafted and they got an
enormously talented kid who just wasn't ready to play, who
played for multiple offensive coordinators in college the last four years,
he's really only played two full seasons, and so, you know,
(13:23):
they looked at him as a puppy, you know, a
guy who's a kid who's got great tools and who
can move around really well, who's got great arm talent,
but needed to be rebuilt from the waist down. And
so they're going through the process of doing that and
they're prioritizing his development at every step. And so a
big piece of not putting them out there last week
wasn't a lack of confidence at Drake May. It was
(13:43):
a lack of confidence in the second offensive line. The
second offensive line had gotten beaten up in camp some
by the defensive backups there, and they felt, you know,
for the good of his development, that the right thing
to do was to only put him out there in
the first preseason game behind the first offensive line. And
so when the first offensive line came off the field,
he came off the field with them. Now, the next
(14:05):
step of it and allows him to sequence this this
this thing is that they had a joint practice yesterday
with the Eagles, and I'd expect that he's going to
play a whole lot more tomorrow night against Philly. But
every step of the way, it hasn't been about getting
ready to play this year. It hasn't been about you know,
getting him live reps. It's been about prioritizing his development.
And you know, they felt like the best thing for
(14:25):
him to do last week, in accordance with his development,
was the only plan behind that first offensive line. Again,
I think he gets more extensive playing time this week.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Brandon, I Yuke is it? I heard it was a
little uglier behind the scenes than anybody wanted to acknowledge.
What have you heard? I also, I, you know, two
thursdays ago, I was told it was really close and
then yeah, it feels like there's some animosity maybe from
both sides.
Speaker 7 (14:53):
Yeah. If you want me to give you a little
bit of a visual here, Collins, this helps you out.
You know, I was in Cincinnati and I saw jamar
ch and his quote unquote hold in right, and he
was engaged. He was around the younger receivers. You talk
to people there, it's like he's just not practicing. He's
doing everything else, like he's getting himself ready to play
the season. You know, in a few days before that,
I'd been in San Francisco and as a start contrast
(15:15):
to that where you know, during the practice, you know,
Brandon Ayuk was off to the side, sitting in a
golf cart and not really engaged with anything. And so,
you know, I'm not sure that that situation has been
as I would say, harmonious as as some of the
other ones there across the league. And I think everybody's
been able to see that with some of the stuff
that's gotten on camera. We're showing some of it here now,
(15:39):
you know. I think the Niners really kind of got
to the point in dealing with that where they wanted
to drive a conclusion and that's why they let him
go out and said to him, go find a better deal.
Let's see if there's a team that you want to
be traded to, and we will open up talks now
on trades with other teams. Where they've been very standoffish
about that until now. They asked for the moon and
the Stars before draft, and so the thought was one
(16:02):
way or the other, this is going to drive us
to a conclusion, get everybody closure on it, and you
know their bet was that Brandon and I you probably
wouldn't be able to find a combination of money and
opportunity to win that was better than what he had
in San Francisco already. And you'd argue, that's where it's
at right now, is that you know, he's offered over
thirty million dollars by the Patriots, didn't want to go
(16:26):
there because they're not in a position to win. He
was offered around twenty eight million dollars per year by
the Steelers, and like, you add that to a team
that's won, but not one at the Niners level recently.
It has stability to head coach, but doesn't have stability
at quarterback. And you know, really, I think that pushed
you back to the table again. There's all that water
(16:46):
under the bridge that you're dealing with, so you do
have to deal with that. But I think the fact
that the Niners offer isn't far off from where the
Steelers were at least gave the sides the opportunity to
reopen talks and talctually hadn't gone anywhere since Man, so
at least got them back to the table where they're
talking again. And look, the Niners priority all along has
been to keep Brandon Ayuk long term. I've said to
(17:07):
see before. I think if all things were equal, they
would treat trade Deebo Samuel before they would trade Brandon Ayuk.
They want to pay him long term. With Broad Party,
I think they've gotten an opening to do it. Nothing
for sure, but I think they've got an opening to
do that now.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
The I watched Jordan Love come out show Off as whip.
It's just so easy. And then I watched Aaron and
the Tahusan Reddick and you know, Aaron's talking Malaysian Airliner
yesterday because he got asked it legitimate question from a
producer and I'm like, oh, good god, it's a circus.
I nobody you know. Green Bay now has moved on.
(17:44):
But are you taken a little bit by how seamless
I mean Brady leaves New England. Ye, they dry up,
I mean dry up. Green Bay has turned the fastest
page I've ever seen. I mean it's almost like every
time something happened.
Speaker 7 (18:04):
Here's the difference, though, Colin, when did they draft the
kid three years ahead of time? Yeah, that's the difference.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
Right, He's been in the building, right, like, so you had.
Speaker 7 (18:16):
The opportunity to develop him that way. And you know,
Matt Lafleur has been really consistent with me about this,
you know, as we've talked about it over the last
couple of years, how he really believes in doing it
this way and because they had Aaron that that gave
him the flexibility to develop Jordan Love through the system.
I had a really interesting conversation with Jordan himself about
it too, where it wasn't perfect last year. You know,
(18:39):
they got off to kind of a quick start, so
I think they were two and one after three games, right,
and he played pretty well, and then they hit this
run and it was what six seven weeks where they
didn't look good. He didn't look good, and it really
kind of made you think, Okay, like is this the
wheels coming off for Green Bay. Jordan told me that
seeing Aaron Rodgers go through full seat seasons allowed him
(19:01):
to manage that a certain way and allowed him allowed
for him to deal with it a certain way. And
his point to me was, if going through an NFL
season is hard for Aaron Rodgers, it's going to be
hard for everybody. And so getting to watch that, getting
to rework a mechanics. Getting to see how an NFL
team works over a three year period, and then getting
put in there with a bunch of young receivers like Wix,
(19:22):
like Reed, like Watson, like Dobbs that are literally growing
up with him put him in such an advantageous position.
So when things did come undone a little bit last year,
he didn't think the world was coming to an end
the way that a rookie might. And so I think
so much of this is their ability to develop him
for three years. Jordan's very talented. He's a great kid,
(19:42):
really smart by all accounts. So he has the tools.
But there are a lot of players who have those
tools who don't make it because they're not in the
right situation. Jordan Love was in a really great situation
with a with a coach who was committed to developing
him the right way. And I think you see the
result now. And I don't think the end of last
year was a fluke. I think he's gonna have a
big year here.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Albert Breer at the Ravens Camp. Mark Andrews, Okay, that's
good news. It's good Senor as oh As, Albert, great
to see you.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Colin.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Yeah, this is really the only time in the NFL
season you only get bad news. I mean, what's the
best news the Jets could get. Oh, that rookie tackle
from Penn States looks sharp. You get no good news.
Now you only get bad news.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
Hassan Reddick comes to a deal.
Speaker 1 (20:25):
That's Jets very great news.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
Okay, that's Buddy Lamb could be great.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
No, you're right, contract holdouts. So if Ceedee Lamb, Hassan Reddick,
and Brandon I you got signed. That's as good a
news as it.
Speaker 4 (20:35):
Jamar Chase, let's toss him in there. He's Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
So basically there's no performance good news. There is contract.
Does it feel like to you we're getting it's a
little NBA, we're getting a little more contract talk in
the NFL than ten years ago.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
By the way, Zach Wilson had a great apparently a
great showing over the weekend for Denver. Yeah, it doesn't
mean anything, like nobody thinks he's a starting quarterback in
this league?
Speaker 7 (20:58):
Right?
Speaker 3 (20:59):
Or are you changing your tune on Zach Wilson after
a hell of a like Trey Lance had a bad game.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
It just doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. Zack Wilson doesn't
matter the future. I mean to let Bonnicks throw twenty
one passes. There's a pass. It doesn't take much. I
can remember Cam Newton, Matt Ryan. I can remember throws
from rookie quarterbacks. You could look one up. Matt Ryan
had to throw against the Bears up the left sideline
(21:24):
in Atlanta, and I remember thinking, that's an NFL starting quarterback.
Cam Newton had one at Arizona down the left sideline,
and I'm like, Oh, that's that's gonna work in the NFL.
And they were real games, and so bon Nicks had
a throw. There were two plays in this game, but
if you go back to the Bonnicks highlights, it's just
a throw to the corner of the end zone. But
(21:48):
just that play, I'm like, that's a starting quarterback in
the NFL. His ability to get it out quickly on
the money, that could be ninety nine yards the other way.
That was dead eye accurate. And it's interesting when I
watch the Jade and Daniels audible up the sideline, You're like, Oh,
(22:08):
that's an NFL audible. Dan Quinn's like that was top gun.
Maverick am I okay to buzz the tower like it
doesn't take much for me to watch and go. It's
not running around stuff, it's can you sit in that pocket?
And it's hard in preseason games. But that Bonnicks throw,
you'd say to yourself, it's a throw. No, it's a
(22:29):
completely precise throw. The velocity on that ball for a guy.
The question about bon Nicks is like armstrength. That was
a rope. It was a frozen rope, a close line.
And I watched that through and I'm like, and then
there's a throw by Caleb Williams. I saw all of them,
(22:49):
so Jade and Daniels, the audible, that's an NFL starting
quarterback throw. The rolling right throw by Caleb.
Speaker 4 (22:56):
Yeah, that was nice.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
When when a rookie can make a quarter a throw
that's a defining throw. Looked kind of pedestrian. That stuff
stands up. I can literally remember the Matt Ryan throw.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
The Cam Newton one, I remember vividly. So I looked
up the box score. So his NFL debut, he threw
for four hundred and twelve in Arizona, two touchdowns. He
had a rushing touchdown as well, and that was like,
oh my gosh.
Speaker 7 (23:23):
Now.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
But it wasn't just a production there was one throw
at the left side. Then it was smoke uncourked yeah,
and I was like, oh, this is gonna work.
Speaker 4 (23:32):
Do you remember RG three.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
I think against the Saints in his debut had like
a bomb and you were like.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
RG wow. My question with RG three was always the
eyeball test. I thought he was a bit. He wasn't thick.
And my take was at Baylor, I'm like, you know,
he's a run around, he's not terribly.
Speaker 4 (23:51):
Thick, big twelve.
Speaker 5 (23:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
So I came in with RG three. He won like
Rookie of the Year and I'm like, no, no, no, Andrew
Luck is what it looks like and was thick. Andrew
could take a beating. Andrew had started for multiple years. Andrew.
I mean it was like Stanford's history of you know,
they've had several great quarterbacks. So to me, RG three
got a lot of the love. But it was like that,
(24:16):
and they also drafted another quarterback in the fourth round,
which told me does everybody in the building not love
the I mean, this was a bad team that got
a quarterback in the first and the fourth round. It
was like, oh, they had other needs. So the RG
three thing I didn't buy into it the luck thing.
I defended him at every turn.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
I'll say this about I didn't buy RG three either,
but that year that he had, oh my gosh, Colin,
he was unbelievable in that first year in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (24:43):
I was stunned how good he was.
Speaker 3 (24:44):
I remember I grew up in the DC area, so
all my friends were at the time Redskins fans, and
they're just like.
Speaker 4 (24:49):
Oh, rd, this guy, this is our next franchise guy.
And he looked like it.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
There was a gun hurt, remember, like a game winning
fourth quarter touchdown run. He just like broke out of
the pack, went down the left sideline the stadium shake.
You could see the camera and it was just like,
oh my, this dude's here. So we'll see I think, Caleb,
you could be honest something bo Nicks'll take a little.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
Bit of time, not that much time. Live in LA.
It's the Herd.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in Neon Eastern not a em Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
All right, J Mack, without further ado, J Mack on news.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
No, no turn on the news. This is the Herd
Line News.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Let's talk about Hassan Reddick holding out for a new.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Deal with the Jets.
Speaker 4 (25:37):
It's a bit of a dumpster fire.
Speaker 3 (25:39):
But good news is Aaron Rodgers is now chiming in
on the Hassan Reddick situation.
Speaker 4 (25:44):
Rodgers was asked about the holdout. Here's what he had
to say.
Speaker 8 (25:47):
There's always new things in the league that you know,
I've been around twenty years. I've seen a lot of stuff.
I think it's players. We always first try and side
with the player because you know what it's like to
be a player. Obviously, we'd love for him to be here,
but uh, you know, we don't judge him for trying
to do what's best for him. I think what's best
for him is to be a Jet because this is
(26:09):
going to be a fun ride. But uh, you know,
he's got to make the best sitting for him and
his family.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
That's fair.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
FA. I think you're onto something with this whole NBA
players getting what they want.
Speaker 4 (26:22):
They've got the leverage. NBA players run the league.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
A lot of high profile holdouts.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
Now, is this just posturing and it's it's much ado
about nothing, Well, it's a lot of it's Lamb's gonna
get done.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
It tends to be glamour positions.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
How much say this is Hassan Riddick doesn't want to
play in the preseason and doesn't want to go through
camp and all that crap.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
Well, a lot of it's wide receiver, ed rusher, Ceede Lamb, Jamar, Chase, Brandon,
I yuk Ed Williams. There, they're glamour positions. Players in
the NFL don't have a ton of leverage. The ones
that do are quarterbacks, left tackle, ed rusher weapons, so
they're gonna flex. Also, this is a time of the year.
To your point, a lot of guys are like, I'm
(26:59):
all that I don't want to be in camp. I mean,
you're not losing the locker room saying I'm calling off
practice today when you have an old left tack on
an old tight end. So I think it's just the
glamour positions. I don't have a problem with stars getting
paid a lot of money. Ceed Lambs with a lot
of money, Jamar Chase, Trent Williams. Those guys are with
a lot of money. That doesn't bother me at all.
(27:21):
I would prefer guys don't go public, but you have camps,
they don't show up. There's a lot of questions. They've
been hold out to my entire life. It does seem
like there's a lot this year.
Speaker 4 (27:31):
It's a little noisy, as you like to say. I
will just ask.
Speaker 3 (27:34):
So the Chiefs get rid of Tyreek Hill and then
still win the Super Bowl. What if the Buffalo Bills,
after moving on from Stefan Diggs, breakthrough and get to
the Super Bowl this year and they face I don't know,
the Packers who moved off DeVante Adams. Will we see
potentially that wide receiver bubble pop and GM's around the
lead saying, look at these guys. They moved on from
(27:55):
their star, high price receiver and they're still getting to
the Super Bowl. Maybe we're looking at this wrong, and
we can, you know, recreate Stefan Diggs in the aggregat
of three guys.
Speaker 1 (28:06):
You know how, and you pay. Historically, home run kings
don't win the World Series like a bullpen becomes incredibly
crucial in the baseball playoffs because the games are close,
there's situations on the seventh, eighth to ninth inning. A
bad bullpen almost never wins the World So I mean,
bad bullpens don't win the World series, whereas you don't
(28:26):
have to be a power driven team to win a
World Series. So in the NFL, you do not need
a great receiving corp to win a Super Bowl. Find
me one terrible offensive line. So Joe Burrow almost pulled
it off, but even Mahomes got crushed when he was
losing tackles. So I mean Burrow, give Burrough credit. That
(28:48):
was a bad old line at almost never happens, and
so we spend a lot of attention on star receivers.
It's really O lines, O lines room in seasons, and
we've spent a lot of time on Aaron Judge. But
if the Dodgers bullpen, I didn't watch them last night.
I watched them the night before. If the Dodgers bullpen leaks,
(29:09):
they're not winning a World Series. So I just think
it's one of those things where glamour position, glamour player,
August is it time to make noise. But it's funny
if you and I ranked okay, So let's take all
the guys holding out. So let's go CD. Let's go
Jabar Chase, Let's go Trent Williams Reddick, Let's go JJ
(29:30):
Reddick or.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
My bad, who's the other there's one of the guys.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
Oh Brandon and I you okay, So let's go one
through five where the player has the most leverage. I
would say. My takeaway is.
Speaker 4 (29:43):
Hey, it's easy Trent.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
That's what I said. Yeah, Because you could say CD Lamb.
I would put Ceedee Lamb two. But the Niners are
a super Bowl team now because the roster's old. So
if you take Trent Williams out with a smaller frame quarterback,
I don't care if they get eye. They're not winning
a Super Bowl.
Speaker 4 (30:01):
Even if the coup was get Lamb.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
I don't think anybody but I'm saying he I mean,
at least the Bengals have T Higgins and Joe Burrow.
Speaker 3 (30:10):
So I would probably put Chase ahead of lamp just
because I think the Bengals can win the Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (30:13):
I didn't care. They've been there several years ago. They
don't have Joe Mixon. Now Joe Mixon, their receiving course
not as deep unless Burton hits Okay, you could do.
I would go Ceedee Lamb too. I would go Jamar
Chase three. I would go I'll tell you, I would
go Reddick four at YUK five. I think San Francisco
(30:37):
is gonna win nine ten games. I think Ayuk's worth
a game. I think Trent Williams is worth four.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
Well with Hassan Reddick did Jet probably have a top
three defensive line in league. And you know that Sala's
calling card dating back to San Francisco. We got to
just get a many passers again and bum rush the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
Trent Williams, we both agree, is one.
Speaker 4 (30:55):
I don't think it.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
Yeah, ceedee lamb Chase too. Reddick's more because they lost
Hoff to the Eagles. Reddick's more valuable.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
They need to listen.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
Joe Douglas could lose his job over this if they
missed the playoffs. If they missed the playoffs, Sala and
Douglas are probably toasted. And then I'll put in an application.
Speaker 1 (31:13):
You know, I don't think Douglas's toast solace in trouble.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
It depends they're laughing at him about this trade around
the league. Like the Eagles apparently knew Reddicks major problem.
Speaker 4 (31:23):
Wants big money, and Joe Douglas, oh, we'll take him on.
We'll take him sure, yeah, like no negotiations. And now
Reddick is like, I don't know what you guys are
talking about I'm not.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
Showing up, I'm not doing anything, and it's like, ye,
how did he miscalculate this? Plus the Zach Wilson with
who is the left tackle McKay Beckton a massive wif.
By that, I mean like, I don't know. I think
if the Jets missed the playoffs, just get rid of
the coach and GM I'm sorry you have to.
Speaker 1 (31:51):
Next.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Next up the New Orleans Saints, who we talk about, yeah,
once every three weeks. They missed the playoffs the last
three seasons and are looking to break through this year.
Speaker 4 (31:59):
Friend of the show, you know, Cam Jordan is.
Speaker 3 (32:01):
The longest tenured player in New Orleans and knows things
have to change if they want to break their playoff drought.
Speaker 9 (32:08):
The name of the game is, whatever we've been doing
has not been enough, So we have to be able
to do more. So if you're not wanting to embrace
that beat it I slimmed out for me, like you
know at some point, you know, I feel like I
faced mortality last year with you know, with the injury,
and I was like, all right, well let's be the
best version of me, and so I came in How
I came in. Conditioning's ever been an issue for me,
(32:29):
as we all know, being able to play seventeen games
hasn't been issued. So now I just want to get
the best version of me. So whatever that takes. Again,
it's the season of more. Whatever whatever takes.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
You give more. Yeah, I'm gonna pick them for fourth third.
Speaker 3 (32:44):
In terms of general interest, what are they in the
league for you? Like twenty nine, it's got to be
low this team.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
I don't think they have the right coach, and Derek
Carr was disappointing. I think he's great. I think they
have like a they have about five really high end players.
Speaker 3 (32:59):
But I I'm looking at their their offensive line. Holy hell,
this is bleak. They got a great center, but starting
rookie left tackle. The other three guys had a bad year.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
I dink they got the wrong coach.
Speaker 4 (33:10):
I mean, I don't even know who these received.
Speaker 3 (33:12):
Rashid Shaheed, Cedric Wilson, Junior Olave is good. Camara's got
too much tread on those tires.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
I don't like this team at all. Maybe the defense
gets them to hang around a little bit. Saints are
not looking good.
Speaker 3 (33:25):
Final story, Colin is the New England Patriots their offense
faced a major first test of the summer during yesterday's
joint practice with the Eagles.
Speaker 4 (33:34):
All reports indicate that it was.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
A horrific performance from girod Mayo's group. Patriots insider Greg
Bedard broke down just how bad it was.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
It was.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
It was a.
Speaker 10 (33:45):
Trainer, it was.
Speaker 1 (33:47):
It was really bad.
Speaker 10 (33:48):
It's one of those practices that should send the coaches
back to square one, the chalkboard.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
What the hell are we going to do?
Speaker 10 (33:57):
Because to this point, look, you know they went in
this direction. That's fine, nobody's perfect. It's not working and
it needs to start as it normally does with the
blocking up front.
Speaker 1 (34:12):
They are drafting number one.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
All thatsive lines bad. By the way, how about do
you feel bad for Drake May? So he's not going
to be the.
Speaker 4 (34:19):
Starter of New England.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
Meanwhile, Minnesota which wanted him, remember all those reports, we
want to trade up for Drake May. Minnesota's got Justin
Jefferson tallshean mcmay.
Speaker 4 (34:29):
It would have been perfect for Drake.
Speaker 1 (34:31):
May in my opinion, the only quarterback in this draft
that could succeed here. And I say succeed production wise,
I'm not saying winning games is Caleb Williams. They're that bad.
Caleb would be productive. They just wouldn't win a bunch
of games this roster. And it's all on Belichick. Oh
last seven years he took over seven.
Speaker 4 (34:51):
Oh, no, no, once, we're going back seven years on Belichick.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
Okay, let me ask you Nick Cassario, who was there
GM his last six drafts were terrible because he goes
to Houston and has crushed his first two and a
half years there with virtually every movie's made. So I'm
supposed to believe just got on a flight and there's
something magical at thirty five thousand feet made him brilliant
(35:17):
from awful. No, Belichick power moved him. This is why
you cannot Nobody in the league has drafted worse than
New England for the last six years.
Speaker 4 (35:26):
I don't disagree with that.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
And Belichick ran that room with his dog next to
his computer, was drafting guys for his system.
Speaker 3 (35:35):
Man's now got a new system and he's looking at
these guys and he's like, none of these square parts.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
And he has just draft the best players available athletes,
not draft three guards and at two kickers in a draft,
you need a good pun there two of those guys
can't play at all.
Speaker 3 (35:51):
Yeah, their offensive line is apparently it's the worst in
the league right now, heading into the seat, like.
Speaker 1 (35:56):
And they and they used draft capital on it. They
reached for about six different guards.
Speaker 4 (36:02):
Listen. They had a two decade run.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
It's enjoy the seller back to the basement, Fellas, it's over.
Speaker 1 (36:09):
I've never seen a divorce this one side.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
I guarantee you were talking about the Patriots less than
anyone this season in the Holy unless it's like oh
and fourteen.
Speaker 1 (36:17):
I don't know why you brought them up and Heard
Line News, although I like the bite.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
Come on, Zach producer going on vacation. Tomorrow's wedging in
Patriots Levion Felger Mass.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
Great show. Listen if you're in Boston. That was fun.
That was fun, all right.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
J McK within the news, Well that's the news, and
thanks for stopping by the Heard Line News.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
That's the show I listened to when I'm vacationing out east.
Speaker 4 (36:40):
When you're on vacation, you listen to sports talk radio.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
I take notes. What are you talking about? Cowherd? Yes
I do. I listened in the afternoon. I turn it
on drive timer.
Speaker 4 (36:51):
So you're talking about the middle Road.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
They'll all turn it on on nesson. I'll turn the
show on in the afternoon, in the heat of the day.
A lot of times I'll turn it on and then
I'll go, you know, then about four thirty, all poor cocktail,
we're ready to roll.
Speaker 4 (37:04):
Talk about middle relief for the Red Sox.
Speaker 1 (37:06):
No, they don't do that. Oh no, it's like a
grown up show. Are topics?
Speaker 4 (37:10):
That's a Francesco Yeah, your guy.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
Well, I'm not getting into that. I'm just saying, that's
the best local show I've ever heard ever.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
So I've never done local radio. Just for the record,
you I would have done.
Speaker 1 (37:21):
You skipped over that, I did.
Speaker 8 (37:23):
You know what?
Speaker 4 (37:24):
Talented?
Speaker 1 (37:25):
Oh boy, you're good at selling. You're good at selling you.
Speaker 4 (37:32):
Somebody's got to sell me.
Speaker 2 (37:34):

Speaker 11 (37:52):

Speaker 1 (38:22):
JJ McCarthy Out for the Year, Moniscus Tear Albert breerstop
by this hour to discuss the really disheartening news for
the Vikings.
Speaker 7 (38:32):
So I don't think the plan was ever to force
JJ McCarthy out there. One thing I do know about
Kevin O'Connell was, regardless of who he drafted, you know,
they had talked about moving up for Drake May. Obviously
they move up a spot to get JJ McCarthy. They
were going to have a detailed plan as far as
how they were going to deploy the rookie quarterback in
the spring in this summer, and what benchmarks he was
(38:55):
gonna have to hit for them to think about putting
that kid out in the field, and so to execute
that sort of plan and built some flexibility into what
you're doing, and when you're gonna play him, you have
to have a plan that you like that's an alternate
to that quarterback, and they do have one in Sam Donald.
Donald looked like he was playing faster and looked like
he was playing more decisively with Kyle Shanahan and the
(39:16):
talent around him, and so like the feeling is some
of that shoot transfer over with Kevin O'Connell as his coach.
Speaker 1 (39:23):
All right, j mc so, we had quite a day today.
You had all sorts of comments from your guy Aaron Rodgers.
We got a couple injuries, Mark Andrews okay with the Ravens,
JJ McCarthy out for the year. We've got several holdouts
and this is kind of typical of there's not a
lot of football news right now, you know, because as
we've said, McVeigh, Sean McVeigh killed the preseason. Uh, nobody
(39:48):
plays any starters and you cross your fingers. The only
good news is holdouts ending. But I think you you
have bailed on your Minnesota peck.
Speaker 4 (39:57):
Not officially.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
We've still got a couple of weeks, right, don't didn't
you say right before the season, So Minnesota's on the clock.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
For me and and the LA Chargers are on the
I like.
Speaker 3 (40:05):
The Chargers, but this Herbert foot thing, How's he gonna
run the offense if he's not mobile due to plantar? Yeah,
I mean he's wearing a walking boot for like two weeks.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
Yeah, so we'll see new offense, new coach My Washington pick.
I feel very good about you.
Speaker 4 (40:18):
You're sticking with that, very good about it.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
I don't There are a couple of teams in the league,
and I think Cincinnati is my number one team where
I just don't know what to do with him. Are
they healthy? Joe Burrow has clearly put on fifteen pounds.
He looks big fifteen like a freshman fifteen. I'm talking
like chest, arms like. He looks big, like muscular, he's
tired of getting fum like, he's no like heavy, like
(40:40):
like worked out like. He looks like he's tired of
getting hurt. You know, Lamar Jackson lost weight, he wants
to be faster. Burrow put on weight to be more durable.
So I don't know if it makes you more durable.
Speaker 3 (40:49):
But uh, speaking of Lamar, we haven't talked Ravens that much.
Speaker 4 (40:53):
Colin.
Speaker 3 (40:53):
I saw one of the Ravens beat writers as saying,
this is the worst offensive line Lamar has had since
he's been in Baltimore. Now, I haven't checked it out
because if it's that bad, they did lose three guys.
But I'm like, oh boy, well that's worst offensive lost
the price of taking the most money, so I said,
Jalen Hurts, Tua Lamar Jackson due to injuries, take the
(41:14):
most money. Same with Burrow, and then you see the
downside when Burrow takes it. Joe Mixon's gone t Higgins
probably eventually the Ravens have the worst offensive line. When
I talked about Dak Prescott's contract, there are a lot
of different ways to do this, but if you're gonna
take the most money, you will not have as many weapons. Well,
I guess the counter is fine, Colin, it's me Dak Prescott.
(41:38):
I'll take a little less money, but I want to
see how you're.
Speaker 4 (41:41):
Gonna allocate it.
Speaker 1 (41:42):
What's your game plan for.
Speaker 4 (41:43):
That, because if it's not helping out the offensive line and.
Speaker 3 (41:46):
You want to pay more to a linebacker, something dumb
like I don't want to take less money for that, right?
Is that a fair pushback from Dak like, well, you
don't necessarily know what you're gonna do a year out.
Speaker 1 (41:57):
You don't know what you're gonna do. Really, you don't
have a plan of a year from now. From now, you
think that the draft picks, you don't know what you're
gonna do twenty minutes before your pick based on.
Speaker 3 (42:06):
Willion dollar organization, you sure as hell better have a
game plan for a year from now.
Speaker 1 (42:11):
Fox is a billion dollar corporation. They don't know what
I'm gonna say in thirty seconds. Well, you don't have
everything planned different? Well, I mean you don't have your
draft picks laid out. It's just I mean the drafts
change drastically.
Speaker 3 (42:23):
But you actually have like a breakdown of okay, this
is contract is up.
Speaker 1 (42:26):
We would love to go after this guy's own roster.
But what if what if a guy you like, a
cornerback you like, gets hurt for the second time. Everybody
in the building's like, we're gonna let him go. Stuff changes.
Speaker 4 (42:37):
Man, you gotta have a game plan, Come on, think
quick on your feet.
Speaker 1 (42:40):
I outline your life in pencil, not pen Gotta have
an eraser. Is where Aristotle or Cowherd John bon JOVII
