for making us part of your day. Jmax Off Ryan
is filling in Tomorrio Davis, great linebacker, a multiple time
(00:48):
Old Troll linebacker, will be in.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Studio from the Saints.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Saints had a bunch of practices through the forty nine
ers schedule and Kyle Shanahan called it off and said,
we don't have enough available players. It's been a weird,
weird off season for the Niners. Christian McCaffrey's a Variety
magazine Deadline Hollywood wedding out in Rhode Island. You've got
Trent Williams holding out, Brandon I Yuke and the team
(01:14):
doesn't get along right now. They're falling apart physically. So
that's where we are right now. Will we do this
every Monday at this time? Strong opinions, Sometimes we whiff,
sometimes we hit. It's called Colin was right, Colin was wrong,
and here we go where Colin was right. I've been
saying this with Jason Tatum. Steve Kerr feels the same
(01:37):
way Brad Stevens does. He doesn't know if he can
trust him around other stars to take hold of the game.
He went ozer for sixteen on jumpers. Don't blame Steve Kerr.
Jason Tatum didn't hit a jumper in the Olympics. He
shrinks around other stars, and sometimes when he's on the
court for a star, he's kind of invisible. This is
what I've been saying for years. It's I know all
(01:59):
the Celtic backers are mad at Steve Kerr. It's not
a Steve kerrishue. Jason Tatum went oh for sixty one
jumpers like he just he didn't make himself the best
possible Jason Tatum. And when your bench includes Anthony Davis
and Bam gonna buy you, you got to work your
way into playing time. I've always been a little bit
(02:20):
cynical of the greatness of Jason Tatum and Steve Kerr Grees.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Where Colin was wrang.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
I thought the Olympics felt like they were sort of done,
and I thought they were spectacular. Simone Biles Katie ledeki
Team USA for the men it hit, it felt like
it was a rebirth. The World Cup over the last
twenty years feels like it has absolutely surpassed the Olympics
as the big every four year sporting event. But the politics,
(02:51):
in my opinion, are so ugly and divisive in America.
We were looking for good news and NBC in the
Olympics delivered it for three straight weeks. Could have got
another couple of weeks. It was like make him longer.
I thought it was just and it surprised me they.
I mean, I really was not jacked up to watch
the Olympics going in, and I thought it was amazing.
(03:11):
Where Colin was right, well, I said, Jaden Daniels is
really good and there's a little Lamar Jackson here. He
made the best throw by any rookie arguably this weekend.
It came on an audible and here was his coach
Dan Quinn talking about it.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
I thought of top gun. Do I have permission to
buzz the tower? No ghost rider? The pattern is full,
and so I think on that one he wanted to
ask for forgiveness and not permission and then throw you know,
an absolute dime, you know, over the top to Damie
to go. So it was a really cool.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Play, it was, and he played well where Colin was raw.
JJ McCarthy, you know, I've been a little bit question
the greatness. Why didn't everybody move up the board to
get him? Well, I thought he looked better than I thought,
and I thought he moved better, played with a ton
of confidence. I mean, he's got a little Sam Darnold
(04:11):
where he'll let it rip. I don't know how great
his arm is. It's good enough. But I thought he
played really well. Eleven to seventeen, one hundred and eighty
eight yards. Even at interception. I didn't think, you're going
Sometimes guys in the NFL are really good. It wasn't
a terrible interception. He had a passer rating of one
hundred and sixteen. He had two runs. He moved better
(04:33):
than I thought, so I thought he was clever, he
was nimble, good for JJ. I still think Donald starts
week one they got a pretty rough first four or
five weeks, but that was impressive. Where Colin was right,
Michael Pennix, that didn't surprise me. And this proves once
again Pennicks played well. It's okay in a league where
(04:54):
sixty quarterbacks will take a snap to have an old
guy coming off of surgery and a talent into a
new guy. Maybe sits on the bench waiting in the wings,
and I don't know how long he'll wait. But there's
all this pushback. How can you how can you draft
him and have Kirk Cousins. Kirk Cousins is coming off surgery.
They've got a good old line, they've got good offensive pieces.
(05:15):
Here's something that's never a problem in the NFL. We've
got one too many good quarterbacks. You can always live
with that.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Where Colin was raw.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
I tried to be so optimistic with Justin Fields, and
then I watched Justin Fields and he took sacks and
he had fumbles, and it's just it just he looks hesitant.
He doesn't get rid of the ball quick enough. It's
kind of who he is. Fumbles, sacked twice, he struggles
like nothing. He can be brilliant, but he takes his
(05:50):
eyes off the field whenever pressure is coming. He's been
hit so much he doesn't look downfield. He's trying to
find a lane to run it. Just as I said
when he was in Chicago. It shouldn't be this hard
for a big guy who moves well with a big arm.
It shouldn't look that hard all the time.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Where Colin was right.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Ceedee Lamb didn't play for the Cowboys. And despite the
fact that Stet's invented of the rams, through four interceptions,
they could not score a touchdown. You got four interception.
When's the last time that ever happened in a game
in the NFL where a team had four picks, some
in good field position, and you still didn't get a touchdown.
And this is my takeaway on the Cowboys. There is
(06:31):
not a team in the NFL that is more dependent
on a singular running back, tight end or wide receiver
than the Dallas Cowboys are. And if Cedi doesn't play,
there's no juice, there's no pop. It's a lot of guys,
and they got to get that contract thing figured out
because nobody in the NFL is given this Cowboy defense
four picks. You're not playing stets inventet in the regular.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Season where Colin was rough.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
I've tried to support Dion Sanders, even though I thought
initially Colorado was a weird fit. But I'm seeing the
stuff that's kind of repetitive with Deon Sanders. A lot
of ego, very defensive. If you're gonna put yourself out there, coach,
you're gonna you're shooting a flare off into the sky
every day. Guess what It's gonna attract people. And he
(07:20):
melted down this weekend with the usually very supportive Colorado
football media.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Eric Kristensen with CBS Sports Colorado Tylers.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
I'm not doing none with CBS. Next question, it's above
that noney do with you. I love for you, I appreciate,
respect you, and none to do with you. They know
what they did.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
I'm here at Denver, not National.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
You are who you are is CBS CBS.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Oh boy, time for the coach to grow up a little.
Where Colin was right, bo Nicks looked like the perfect fit.
I'm telling you, it looks like Sean Payton Drew Brees.
So he was you know, he was exactly and he
moves much better than people are gonna give him credit
for he actually moves really well. He moves better than
Penix I think. I mean, there's a handful of starters
(08:11):
in the league that don't move like they moves better
than Drew Brees. At the end, he's accurate gets. I mean,
you see how fast he gets rid of the ball there.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
That ball.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
You got to get rid of that ball fast. So
four or five for fifty yards and a touchdown. That's
just on third down. He was really really good on
third down.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Where Colin was right.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
And finally you mocked me. Nesson, everybody made fun of
me when I said keep your eye on Joe Milton
out of Tennessee. The kids got talent. He's got talent.
The offensive line facing four Decembers. He made this into
a big play. Hardball liked him. I think Joe Milton's
got talent. Now. He was inconsistent the knocking him in college.
(08:56):
He missed open receivers. I'm not saying he's Caleb William,
but he looked great and the crowd was into it.
And I mean, Jacoby Brissett is solid, but look at
their schedule. They go on a four game losing street.
Drake May has not looked great in the pre seat.
You don't think Joe Milton. All I said was I
think I'd give that kid snaps. I'd give Joe Milton snaps.
(09:20):
Jim Harbaugh did, Josh Hibel did. Go look at the
last year and a half in the SEC. Look at
the offensive numbers he put up. Maybe he's not a fluid,
He's not this and that. All I know, Joe Milton
moves the ball. Colin right, Colin wrong.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio FS
one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
All Right, been looking forward to this all day. There's
so many moving parts in college football. We have a
twelve team playoff. Do you coach differently going into a
twelve team playoff when you know if you're in Ohio
State or a Texas you may have four of your
biggest games are at the very end of the season.
Texas Oklahoma move into a different conference. The SEC is
(10:07):
a totally different physical reality than the Big twelve. Pac
twelve moves Midwest. I don't think they're going to cower
in fear, but I do think it's different football, and
who would know more about a guy that was Coach
of the Year. Urban Meyer was eighty three and nine
in the Big Ten one, Natty's down in the SEC
(10:29):
and he joins US Live Fox Sports seventeen years Hall
of Fame coach. So this is so exciting to me.
I've never been this excited about a college football season.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
In my life.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
So, you know, there's a certain brand. You know it
better than anybody. There's Big ten football. All I hear
from Big ten fans is oh, those poor West Coast teams,
and I'm like, slow down. They they're pretty good out
west too. They offer different So as a Big ten
coach and now you have Oregon, Washington, SA, what would
(11:01):
you be concerned about? How would you look at West
Coast teams and say, hey, we're not We may have
to alter recruiting a little bit.
Speaker 5 (11:09):
You know, my last two years we've played USC and
the Cotton BOWLT in that way, we had the opportunity
to watch all the film all season long. And then
my final season in eighteen, we played Washington and the
Rose Bowl, and so you got a really good feel
and it's changed a little bit. But the one thing
that I'll tell you about the PAC twelve and obviously
it's disappeared, and ironically that was arguably the best I
(11:31):
think was the best conference in college football last year,
and now it's gone. But the difference between the Pac
twelve and the Big Ten, back when I was air
and talking to coaches was a line of scrimmage. The
Big Ten, certainly the top half of the league have
better offensive defensive lineman than I saw in the Pac twelve.
And that's as far as skill quarterback play, skilled athletes
(11:55):
on defense. I think you know, certainly the four teams
coming in the Big Ten, they have that skill. But
the question I have is will they have the guys
up front to compete at the highest level, because they're
gonna jump right in and be one of the top
half of the Big Ten. Right, But those teams at
the top of the Big Ten, the offense of the
defense lines are pretty rugged.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
So Ohio State's fascinating. I've said they're talented, but I'm
not always sure offensively what they are. So they go
get Chip Kelly and it's funny. UCLA. The baby blue
uniforms make you think they're finesse. Chip loves to run
the ball. Chip would run it seventy times a game
if he could. I think he's sort of the missing elixir.
(12:35):
I think he's the missing piece for this offense, which
in my opinion is prettier than it's ever been. But
I'm not sure it's as physical and as tough as
urban offenses. Give me your thoughts on what Chip does
to Ryan Days offense.
Speaker 5 (12:52):
I'll tell you, Colin, this is something for you to
really watch closely. I know we will a big new kickoff,
but Chip Kelly, you know, I've known Chip forever close.
We spent a lot of time together going in the
spread offense and his philosophy back in the day at
Oregon as a head coach and as a coordinators go
as fast as you can. That evolved when he went
to the NFL, and it's really evolved when he went
(13:13):
to UCLA. He is now the perfect play guy. He's
a guy that's going to huddle, take their time, and
get the perfect play on. That is drastically different than
what he was as a head coach at Oregon. I'm
anxious to see it. You know, I've studied. I watched
some UCLA film. They are very physical. They do believe
in running the ball. They believe they getting the quarterback involved,
and Will Howard is I met I'm meeting when I
(13:36):
was in Columbus. What a great looking guy he is.
And I understand he's really fast and athletic, and on
videotape he looks that way. But this Chip Kelly offense
is completely different than the so called radical offense that
he ran when he was the head coach at Oregon.
This is completely different, and I do believe it's going
to help the house. Date they got the quarterback, I
think that fits this scheme.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
By the way you'd I think it's remarkable. Big Ten
fans may not know this how many of those UCLA
three star recruits got drafted. UCLA did a really shockingly
good job. USC's recruits got the stars. Chip put more
guys in the pros, and so again he is a
he is. It's really I mean, I Chip and I
(14:18):
have had this conversation. You can't even believe how many
Bruins end up in the pros and being high end players.
So I want to go to the twelve team playoff.
This is now urban. This is like the NFL. It's
it's a semi NFL structure, and I do wonder if
you would get late in the year, you're banged up,
you've got injuries, you want to hide some stuff. Would
(14:41):
you coach a little differently knowing your toughest four games
could be your last four?
Speaker 5 (14:48):
You know, I went out to Utah to watch spring
practice and speak to the team. I went out to Oregon.
Dan Lanney has become a good friend and spent time
with his team, and then I did the spring game.
And obviously I'm close with Ryan Day and I've talked
a couple guys about I don't I don't believe anyone's
going into that mindset. This is uncharted waters for college
football coaches. That a twelve team playoff. I can't. You
(15:10):
almost sent chills down my spine when you said you
coached differently and maybe give away a game. You know, college,
you don't do that. College used to be the BCS
two teams and the playoff four teams. And you can't.
You can't stub your toe. You know that happened those
couple of times we had one loss and we didn't
make the playoffs. So I don't know. I can't answer that.
I don't think anybody can right now until we get
a couple of years under a belt in the twelve
(15:32):
team playoffs.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
So Texas has a great roster. The difference from the
Big twelve to the SEC is, you know, you can
go to Colombia. You can go to Columbia Missouri, and
all of a sudden you got NFL lineman up in
your grill. It's a totally different. I mean, I saw
Georgia go to Missouri like two years ago and get
pushed all over the field for three hours and escape
(15:55):
with a win. I don't think Texas and Oklahoma quite understand.
I think it's easier for Pac twelve teams to go
a little east. I don't think Texas, Oklahoma understand what
it ole. Miss Lsu, Florida, Missouri, even a Kentucky you
tell me you were in that. It's like there are
no days off every even the bat teams have eighty
(16:18):
eight thousand in their stadium.
Speaker 5 (16:21):
Yeah, and and they're budgeted to win a national championship.
I told I got educated at the SEC in two
thousand and five, and when I was at Florida and
we played Tennessee in the swamp, and I looked out
there and there's a big men that. I mean, once again,
the line of everybody's going to have really good skill.
You know, some teams have a lead, but everybody's got
good skill. The difference calling is that damn defensive line
(16:43):
and linebackers, the way they run in the South and
the SEC, and the way they take their football. So
there's there. I count eight. Now you had Texas and Oklahoma.
I count ten teams that really they're alumni, they're budgeted,
and their fans expect them to compete for a national title.
In the Big Ten, you know, you got Ohio State
and the wolver Range, you got Penn State, and now
(17:05):
I put USC in that category. Oregon is getting close.
You know, they played in a couple of national championship games,
so they're very very close. Washington played in the championship game.
They're very close. But until you win that darn thing,
you know, I don't know if you can put them
up there. So I think the SEC is a whole
different level as far as top to bottom. Now, the teams,
(17:26):
the top teams are the Big Ten good as anybody
that proved that last year. The Wolverine team was one
of the best teams in the last ten years. Ohio
State has arguably the best roster in college football. However,
week in week out Texas and Oklahoma, I got respect
for those programs on those coaches, but it's going to
be something they've not experienced.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
So I said this about Lincoln Riley. I said, go
look at Jim Harbon, Brian Kelly, and Lincoln Riley. Lincoln
Riley was a play from twelve wins his first year.
They took over a four and eight program with about
twenty eight guys that could play, and they were a
play from twelve. But if you'll watch, they didn't look
like a they didn't look like a twelve win team.
(18:03):
Harbaugh took a team from Brady Hope. First year. They
won ten and they had a nice tight end and
they had a couple, you know, but it was a
lot of ham and egg. It was like, they don't
look like Ohio State. I don't care what they'll win,
they don't look like they don't look like Alabama. Brian
Kelly got to a natty with mantau Tea and I'm like,
I watched the games. I'm like that that's not an
set that it's scheduling and winning close games. And I
(18:26):
said this with Lincoln Riley. They don't look like a
national championship team that it's so hard to get two
deeps where the backups are just nflers. They're just not
getting you know, they're two years away. I think USC
is going to go in and win about seven eight games.
I don't think they'll beat Penn State. I don't think
they'll beat Notre Dame. I don't think they'll beat LSU.
(18:46):
I think they can win eight. But what's real? Even
with the transfer portal, which everybody thinks that's magic, it
solves everything, Brian Kelly found out you can't build a
culture around a portal overnight. What is real even for
a big brand to be able to go into a
program and have not win ten games a Natty roster
(19:09):
that can go toe to toe with Georgia.
Speaker 5 (19:14):
I go back to when when I walk on a
practice field and I used to do this when I
was the head coach, and I'd walk in pregame and
I was so mesmerized by I would just because I
was an offensive coach. I would stare at that defensive
line and I at the end of the day, if
you do not have that, you're not It's not going
to happen. As a matter of fact, I think if
you get exposed in a really good conference without a
(19:36):
defensive front, that's gonna be a really bad year for you.
And I would just the way I was raised, the
way I was raised in this great game. And I
do it now. Whenever I go to games and I'm
getting ready to for Fox broadcast a game, the first
thing I do is I flip on that film and
I stare at that defensive line and if you got
the chase you on Nick Bosat, Joe Bosas, etcetera. Those
kind of guys, that's a things are going to look
(19:57):
really good for you. Look at Georgia over the years,
they've had really good quarterbacks. So I mean, that's Stetsan Bennett,
my godness, won a national championship. And but you that's
not what want and ask. He's a great player and
he's surrounded by great players. At the end of the day,
you have to have those guys on the defensive line.
And I've coached against USC. I was on the sideline
when they played Utah for the uh what was a
(20:19):
Pac twelve championship. Yeah, and they did not look I
agree with you, they did not look like it. They
looked like a quarterback and skill. But we all know
what happens when it gets to November. Quarterbacks and the skill,
that's not what wins it for you.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
All right, So give me a give me a surprise
team in the new Big Ten. I know I've got one.
Give give me a surprise team that you've either been
to practice, you know the coach, you don't, you know,
there's I think Nebraska could be very interesting. Nebraska is
interesting to me.
Speaker 5 (20:50):
What do you think? Yeah, you stole my thunder. I
got a lot of respects. People know this. I'm a
Nebraska fan. You know, if I was a player, I'd
love to go to Nebraska. That history of the stadium,
the fans are incredible. We coached out there and they've
been really down for several years and always shocked when
on the sideline. A couple of times we played against him,
and you know, you talk about a team that didn't
look like Nebraska old. I just think he's recruited. Well,
(21:14):
you know they got the transfer quarterback that Dylan that
is a really good player. You know, I like their coach.
Either coach knows how to win. He's won at every level.
There's a difference between winning and then winning at every level,
and that's why I got a lot of respect for
that role. So in Nebraska would be my team. They're
not good enough calling to win it, but they're good
(21:36):
enough to make some noise. All right.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
By the way, the summer's almost over. You got to
have to put the golf clubs away a little bit.
None of this cushy lifestyle nonsense. Are you ready to
put the time in now, coach?
Speaker 5 (21:48):
You know, I'll tell you it's been cushy, man. I
mean it's been I've been fly fishing a Montana. I've
been remember guessing Quartelaine, Idaho. So yeah, I'm back in
the heat of Florida. I'm down in my office here
and I'm starting to watch film. But I'm ready to go.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
Great Senia, so much fun for me. Thanks Gay, so
good to see you, so urban Meyer.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern nin am Pacific.
Speaker 6 (22:11):
Hey, what's up, everybody? It's me three time pro bowler
LeVar Arrington, and I couldn't be more excited to announce
a podcast called Up on Game?
Speaker 2 (22:19):
What is up on Game?
Speaker 6 (22:20):
You asked, along with my fellow pro bowler TJ. Hutschman,
Zada and Super Bowl champion. Yup, that's right, Plexico Buruts.
You can only name a show with that type of
talent on it. Up on Game We're going to be
sharing our real life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen
to Up on Game with me LeVar Arrington, TJ. Huschman, Zada,
(22:43):
and Plexico Burrs on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or
wherever you get your podcast from.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
There's five quarterbacks in this league stories that I'm really
really interested in just as a consumer. I now number
one my five most interesting quarterbacks. The Caleb Williams thing
is fascinating. He's polarizing. The Bears have a coach on
the hot seat. The Bears are the only NFL franchise
that's never had a four thousand yard passer. They've done
(23:13):
defense well a lot of years. Could this kid be there, Jordan?
Could he be the guy that literally changes the franchise?
He is really talented. I don't know the answer. I
think he's gonna be productive. I don't know if he
wins a lot of games this year. The schedule's pretty tough.
The Packers, Lions, Vikings all capable. This kid will get
me to the one o'clock window on Fox. Second is
(23:35):
Aaron Rodgers. This season could help kind of cement his career.
We know he's talented, but little prickly calling out his
coach occasionally. Don't love that, mister little Lota in Egypt.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
Don't love it.
Speaker 1 (23:50):
Not the end of the world. Robert solid Nat Hackett
on the hot seat. There's a lot of combustible stuff
going on on crossing my fingers.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
He stays upright.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
They're rebuilding the offense line with potentially a rookie getting
big snaps. Can Elijah Vera Tucker stay healthy? He needs
protection erins at too Listen. I'd put Patrick Mahomes going
to try to do something Tom Brady and Joe Montana
couldn't do, win a third straight Super Bowl. It's been
a very noisy offseason. I still think their wide receiver
group is a bunch of question marks and not a
(24:20):
lot of answers. But if anybody can do it, it's him.
Can he become the first ever back to back to
back Super Bowl winning quarterback? Certainly got the talent Number
four justin Herbert don't have a playoff win, but damn
he's good now. He finally gets an elite coach. He's
out of a walking boot. Reportedly this morning he's ready
to roll. They don't have much at wide receiver. They're
hoping that kid out of Georgia's second rounder can work.
(24:42):
He's one of these kids. He was sensational as a rookie,
had Shane Steichen, and we're just kind of waiting for
him to pop. He's the last young quarterback that we
all think is good and we're waiting for stuff beyond stats.
He'd be number four and number five, the mercurial Russell Wilson.
I don't know what to make of it. He literally
was so good in Seattle. He got guys like Johnny
(25:04):
Manziel Baker Mayfield drafted, and I don't know what's happened
to his career. He got teammates calling him out, Sean
Payton and Pete Carroll dumped him. It's a weird career,
but I'm really excited to watch it now. There is
an honorable mention. I banged the table in the morning
meeting to get him in the top five the staff.
(25:25):
I get no support at all from the staff. I
think Sam Darnold is fascinating on his fourth team trying
to resurrect his career, but the staff would not. The
staff would not allow me to put him in the
