Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Welcome in our three on a Tuesday, live in Los Angeles.
It's The Herd. Wherever you may be and however you
may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day.
We were just talking during the break like I don't
think people have quite put their arms around it. Caitlin
Clark this weekend was on some channel I've never heard
of and got over a million viewers. Next year, w
(00:52):
NBA games will beat NBA games and ratings in which
she plays. If she plays on a Wednesday in the
NBA played in a Wednesday during their time, WNBA games
will be NBA games.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
I don't even think that's that hot of a takecol No.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
It's not even hot take. I'm just saying it's gonna happen. Yeah,
And people don't understand that. That's why it's so absurd.
That women's basketball did not inject her and Angel reached
to the Olympic team, it would have been just more eyeballs.
The attendance and the ratings for everything at the Olympics
up except women's basketball. It's just a complete miss by
(01:30):
women's basketball. And they also sort of butchered this year.
They didn't put her in the shooting contest. She said
she was tired. Pay her and get her in the
shooting contest, and they gave her the hardest schedule in
the league as a rookie. Hopefully women's basketball is over
their pettiness and silliness and just says I'm not joking,
she should be. It's like magic bird, you get you
just get her on TV as many times as you can.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
I can almost guarantee next summer Caitlin Clark will be
on CBS Network TV every Saturday or Sunday all summer.
I'm almost certain of it. Like that, those are the
marque days for the WNBA.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
I was telling I was telling a suit here, although
our suits don't wear suits. I was telling one of
them if I could buy because like most of the
rights are sewn up right, Like the NBA just went
through there so Amazon, NBCESBN, get the NBA a couple
other suitors. But that's where it lands. What great rights
are left the WNBA. I think they're going to sell
(02:26):
some WNBA rights. If I'm a networking Ezech, I would
go buy because it's the summer, and unlike baseball in
the summer, it's younger, it's got a greater ceiling, it's
got a rock star that moves the numbers. There's a
scarcity of games. Remember the NBA. WNBA season is short.
It's only like thirty eight games. It's not eighty two
like the NBA, so the games matter. They feel like
playoff games.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
It kind of sort of feels like if you could
buy stock in the NHL for the next five years.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Or the WNBAWNBA by mile and that was a rookie season.
How much bigger did Magic get in year five than
year one? In year seven then year one or two.
This thing is just Taylor Swift was popular ten years ago.
She went thispop Now like this Caitlin Clark thing is
she is gonna make women. I'm a network exec. I
got baseball for ten years or I got WNBA. I
(03:14):
take the latter. Not even argument. It's pretty. It's amazing
and the quality of the league has been getting better
over time. The league was growing faster than the NBA.
I think now, remember next year at this time, no Trump,
Kamala election, right, no COPA, no Euros, no Olympics. So
the summer is wide open for TV viewers. Caitlin Clark's
(03:37):
ratings are going to explode.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
And you know how there was like concern in NBA
NFL when Peyton Manning retires.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Oh man, who's taken over? So Diana Tarassi is the
logo of the WNBA.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
Yeah, she's probably gonna retire, right, she's like forty two
or something. Yeah, they won't miss a beat at all.
It will be like, okay, next up, Oh it's Caitlin Clark.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
We're not missing anything.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
No there, I mean the NFL. The advantage the NFL
has is also the advantage the WNBA has. Now, think
about this, So whereas nobody watches college baseball, it's southern,
so bringing in new players doesn't help baseball ratings. Nobody's
watching college hockey and increasingly basketball. Men's stars don't play
(04:19):
college basketball, but the two leagues in America where players
go to college, the ratings are now excellent and they
stay for years, the WNBA and the NFL, so their
farm systems get real ratings. Think about that. You're a
lot of times in America, you're only as popular as
(04:40):
your minor league system. So I watched the WNBA draft
this year. First thirty five minutes, I knew every player.
I watched the NBA draft I didn't know outside of
the Yukon guys, I almost didn't know anybody. So this
is not a small thing. If for all these executives
out there, this is a you have a huge we
have a huge moment in time where the NFL's biggest
(05:03):
advantage is college football. Microwaves all these guys. I mean,
we're all so jacked to watch Caleb Williams or a
Baker Mayfield or a Tim Tebow. They won huge ratings.
Who's watching Wemby? We've never seen him play and the
Spurs were terrible. So it's just I think next year,
(05:24):
when the slate gets blown out, no presidential election, no COPA,
no YURLs, no no Olympics, it's going to be baseball
and WNBA, and hopefully they put WNBA on major networks now,
not like whatever it was on cover I don't even
know what that is. Wasn't that on the periodic table chart? Ion?
(05:46):
So I just it's exciting, it really is. It's Diana
Russini is going to be joining us. By the way.
On the Dan Levatard podcast this week, Tua called out
Brian Flores, former New England Patriot assistant. I'll be honest
with you, called him a terrible person. We shouldn't be
too surprised Flores's style. It falls under the Belichick coaching tree.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
I think be sure to catch live editions of The
Herd Weekdays and Neon Easter not a em Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Yeah. I was saying previously that fifteen years Sean Payton
and Drew Brees tore the ligue up. Bow Nick's like
looks like he's ready to play now, and it does
make me as I watched bow Nicks tear it up
in the preseason. I think, did I overvalue Russell Wilson forever?
(06:40):
Last week? Five drives one first down? Maybe that's a
Pittsburgh issue. Diana Russini joins us The Athletic also Scoop
City podcast. The Pittsburgh thing is funny because they haven't
gotten Diana, they haven't gotten their own line right for
six years. They've got really nice personnel. They were in
the Brandon Ayuk sweepstakes and I have said back and forth,
this is Russell's job, and I'm like, I'm launching this weekend.
(07:02):
I'm like, neither of these quarterback they don't want to
get hit the do we know today in that building
you have it sourced? Is Russell the guy? Or is
that puppy up for grabs?
Speaker 5 (07:14):
Now that puppy's up for grabs, that puppy is up
for grabs. Justin has done a really good job of
making this thing as competitive as he could possibly make it.
With the time that Russell spent on the sideline, he
took full advantage of that, and he was doing things
in practice that at There were days I was checking
in with people there and it would just it just
(07:35):
felt like it was snowballing every day. It was just
getting better and better and more momentum was shifting towards
Justin and then preseason game comes Russell comes back. There's
a veteran experience that that Russell brings, which I think
is what Mike Tomlin has been pointing to from the
start of this and the whole idea of this pole position.
(07:55):
But look, somebody there needs to take care of the football,
and that's that's good the priority. And yes, the offensive
line is a problem. But you know, you mentioned Sean
Payton there, and obviously he spent that year with Russell
last year and it was just so obvious to coach
at their biggest issue in offense were the turnovers and
the sacks. Yeah, and you saw some of that and look,
(08:18):
some of this was the offensive line in Pittsburgh. This
is not all Russell Wilson. This is not all justin
fields at all. But there are definitely some situations where
you have to wonder if Russell is going to be
able to figure this out, because the rest of the
league has figured out Russell Wilson. Yes, and this is
going to be put on Arthur Smith. And this may
be a bigger this task may be taller than he
(08:40):
even expected, because I look at it as this, If
Sean Payton, who's one of the more the most brilliant
offensive minds in football, was challenged by Russell Wilson, it's
going to be tough for Arthur Smith to figure it
out too, so I think Justin Fields definitely has a
shot to still win this job.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
So I have said the team that will is better
than everybody gives it credit for. Is Denver. You were
just there with Sean. I mean, bo Nix has been tremendous.
I think they're receiving core, Tim Patrick, Mims, Troy Franklin,
Courtland Sutton is much deeper than people give it credit for,
and Sean is able to scheme guys open like a
Shanahan or McVeigh. I don't think Denver's bad. I don't
(09:20):
think it's out of the possibility. They're a playoff team.
Beyond the stuff that I played on the air in
your podcast, what's the vibe around Sean? It feels like
he's sort of defending his team, like he likes them
more than the public does.
Speaker 5 (09:36):
I don't think he's defending his team. I think he's
embracing his team. I think they're young, they're hungry, and
they're drinking the Sean Payton kool aid. And they when
a team drinks the Sean Payton kolid good things happen.
And I think you have to look at it as
a Denver Broncos fan, listening right now. Last year was
a mulligan. The marriage between Russell Wilson Sean Payton was
(09:59):
never going to work. I think there's some ego involved
there on both sides. I think there were problems with
just how they viewed what this offense was going to
look like, the way Sean Payton envisions it, how he
wants it to be. He's very particular, not just with
his play calling, but everything that comes with the game
has Sean Payton's stamp on it, and he wants it
(10:19):
his way and his way only. And Russ obviously coming
from a completely different world in Seattle, meeting up with
Sean Payton is they wanted it to work. It didn't.
So now you have bo Nix, a young rookie. You
have Jared Stidham, who understands what Sean Payton's looking for
after he spent a year with them last year. And
you have Zach Wilson, who's just happy to get out
(10:41):
of New York. Is all ears with a Davis web
quarterback coach who was the former backup quarterback for the
New York Giants, who, as I was told when I
was on the ground in Denver, has been the highlight
of this quarterback room in terms of being the teacher
in the room and being able to communicate with Sean
Payton is looking for. And my biggest takeaway from Sean
(11:04):
and his enthusiasm about bo Nicks is bo Nicks has
the mental makeup of what Sean has been looking for.
He studied him so much and realized, this is what
I want. He was particular and specific with what he
was looking for in his next quarterback, and bo Nicks
is the guy that has it. Obviously, that experience in
college playing in those sixty one games is helpful, his
(11:28):
presence in the pocket, his calmness, his ability to run
this offense. Because Chase Daniel, my co host, who obviously
was a quarterback for Sean, kept pointing out on the
sideline while we were watching that offense go up against
the Green Bay Packers defense. He said, I don't know
how much I can emphasize this to you, but Sean
calling plays is not easy for a rookie. This guy
(11:51):
is just a few weeks into Sean and he's goat.
He has no problem handling this. There's no hiccups that
you see. And I think we saw a little bit
of that in the preseason games. And I do believe
the ceiling is really high for Bonix because Sean Payton's
at his corner.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
So this is interesting. Reports yesterday and the day before
that the Niners who drafted two receivers, one of them
the fourth round pick, has been looked really good. Is
what is the latest on Brandon Iyuk? Where are we now?
Because they didn't draft those two wide receivers. That was
intentional Deebo's physicality. I just I look at it and
(12:28):
I'm reading yesterday and everybody's like, Hey, that fourth round
receiver for them, that dude's gonna play. What is that?
Does that change anything?
Speaker 5 (12:37):
Well, he's injured right now, right, So they're just they're
dealing with that. But it's mutual assure destruction at this point, right,
because you look at it from a negotiation standpoint, the
San Francisco forty nine ers played the role of tough guy,
let's just say, right, because they didn't negotiate with a
Yuke for months, right, they make this offer. A YUX
camp obviously thinks it's a low ball number at twenty
(12:59):
six million a year, And I was told that Aux
cam'p even called around to teams, not not looking for interest,
but kind of trying to get a sense, Hey, is
this a fair deal? Do you think my client is
worth more? And the feedback was yeah, yeah, he's worth
more money than that.
Speaker 6 (13:18):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (13:18):
So obviously when camp started here the whole holden began.
And so here we are where this back and forth
and Kyle, truly, I've never covered a story like this
before where there's so many tentacles because obviously we saw
so many teams involved with the Patriots at Cleveland Brown's.
There's even another team out there that no one knows
about right now that was possibly involved at one point
here in a three way trade. Right so, it would
(13:39):
have been San Francisco to giving Brandon and a You
to the Pittsburgh Steelers draft picks back to the San
Francisco for nine ers. They would then use that to
go get a receiver because Kyle Shanahan is very uncomfortable
not having a receiver right now. If Brandon and I
you were to get traded, which is to leverage Brandon
and IUK over him, they can't find one. They can't
(14:01):
get a team to trade with them and give them
one of their top guys. So you talk about them
drafting some wide receivers. I don't think that really matters.
And this whole thing has really been frustrating. I know
for the San Francisco forty nine ers front office, for
Kyle Shanahan, and even for Auk's camp. This hasn't been
an easy negotiation. But I do believe that we're at
(14:23):
a point where they're going to grind out the next
few days and I will most likely wind up with
San Francisco unless something wild were to happen. And I
almost don't even rule it out because this has been
such a wild situation.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
By a minute left, is Aaron gonna play Aaron in
the preseason? Is he gonna play or No? No, he's not
at all.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
No, I don't think and I don't think he should.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
Why are you gonna play him?
Speaker 5 (14:44):
You know what he can do? Why are you going
to take that risk? You're crazy. This entire season is
on the shoulders of Aaron Rodgers. Keep him healthy, bubble
wrap him, get him ready for Week one against the
San Francisco forty nine Ers, and hope that Trent Williams
isn't there. He'll be there, but just hope he isn't.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Diana Russini athletic senior NFL insider. The podcast is called
Scoop City. Been using clips of it all week as
almost Danny. Good to see him.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
That's awesome.
Speaker 5 (15:07):
Thanks for the love and support on it. Appreciate it, guys.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
You bet would you play Aaron at al J? Mack?
Would you play him a couple snaps? No, he kind
of looks. He's limping around like an old dog at practice.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Toss him out there against the Niners.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
That's it. First time he faces. It's bosa.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
He's a veteran, bro.
Speaker 4 (15:23):
Come on, he's been around the played four snaps in
five hundred some days, so what how many snaps before that?
Speaker 1 (15:28):
A billion?
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Come on, this guy's good to go. Offensive line is fine.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
Four snaps.
Speaker 4 (15:35):
By the way, Jets left tackle the kid out of
Penn State. Yeah, he's like a swing tackle. How good
of a luxury is that first round pick? The guy
could be plug and play right now on the right side.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
They're using him as a swing because the offensive line
is so much better.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Most tackles now are swing tackles.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
He's a rookie though out of Penn State.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
A rookie, Yeah, well that's what I'm saying most of
these guys out of college now they can do both.
The NFL GM water on the Jets. No, I mean
NFL gms don't look at you as left or right
tackle like that used to.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
They hope Tyron Smith can hold it down for a
year or two.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
Oh, let's hold it down till thanks Gilby.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
Fine, let's go hold it down to thanks TV. And
if the rookie's got to come on, he's ready to go.
We've got all this lined up.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
Dude, it's looking good for the Jets.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
Jack with the news, this is the herd Line News.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Can we talk about the Chiefs?
Speaker 3 (16:25):
I know you like them.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
Chiefs are coming off back to back Super Bowl wins,
trying a three pte.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
I got I say no shot.
Speaker 4 (16:31):
Bill Belichick, by the way, was asked about the possibility
of Casey getting it done. While he said their biggest
issue in twenty twenty four is going to be on defense,
he also added that if any team could pull it off,
it's the Chiefs. Belichick obviously knows football, he's won his
greatest coach. Ever, if Reid does pull off the three
pt it does make it an interesting discussion.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
Well, you can read in Belichick reads one with every quarterback.
Belichick's one with one. Belichick is sub five hundred without Brady.
Andy's gotten to super Bowls off Mahomes and others. Yeah,
I mean, if he wins three straight, I don't have
a problem saying that. Andy Reid, if he wins three straight,
(17:11):
I think now he was the one coach that always
gave Belichick trouble, and Belichick had a huge quarterback advantage.
Belichick's not aging like wine. This this thing is maybe
corked wine. He's not aging.
Speaker 6 (17:23):
Well.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
I might have to step in and defend Belichick. He's
a pinata for you right now.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
I mean, I'm sorry, but another one of his assistants
being a jerk. I mean, what do you want? I mean,
what do you want?
Speaker 3 (17:35):
That's his fault that the guy was a jerk.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Well, he created the culture, and let's work for Belichick.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
As we've learned all these other guys.
Speaker 4 (17:43):
You can't ape what he did and then think you
could just take it somewhere else and it's gonna work.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
That's not how it works.
Speaker 4 (17:49):
That'd be like when I you know, if you go
away and you're not hosting and I'm hosting, I don't
try to do the color coundard, so that's dump. I
would try to do the Jason McIntyre show with some
interesting times that could be dumb.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
Rarely is that.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
But like you get what I'm saying, right, you're not.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
Gonna go in Well, yeah, but that's easy to say.
But when Belichick's winning trophies every year and you work
under him, you are going to look at that and
it's gonna validate some You know, if Belichick also hired
crusty guys, So you bring a crusty guy in and
you watch Belichick and it works. I think it's it's
hard to work under somebody for seven or eight years
it's super successful and say I'm not gonna take anything
(18:25):
from him. I understand it. I just think what guys
took from him no longer works in this league. Agreed.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
Don't you think on some level he should have Flores
should have seen Joe Boyd, Josh McDaniels really tried this act.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
It flopped terribly in Denver. Men and then men have
enormous egos. Women are much more willing to follow other
women's advice, but you know, guys tend to be I
know the answer. I'm not copying anybody. I look at Belichick.
I am constantly in my life looking at how other
people do things, borrowing things. I like the way that
(19:00):
works or that well. I don't have any pride in
that stuff. If somebody does something better than I do,
it's like, you know, in a business or something, it's like, okay,
I'll listen. But I think a lot of these guys
are like, hey, winning trophies. Here is the defensive coordinator.
I'm gonna do it my way. And it's Remember that
was a very insular culture, like nobody got in, nobody
got out. It was totally controlled by coaches.
Speaker 6 (19:20):
Not any.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
I forgot a lot.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
But but I think it's hard that culture, like nothing
got out, nothing got out. Now everything get leaks. The
world's change. I mean the minute Brady left, you got
leaks all over that building. That tells you that Brady
held that culture together, not Bill. The minute Brady left,
that were leaks every fifteen minutes. They're writing books every hour,
(19:44):
all sorts of leaks.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
Let's stick with New England and go to Matthew Judon,
who's push for a new contract led to his exit
from New England.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
He's landed with the Falcons.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
In his introductory press conference, he was asked about how
he will approach his desire for a new deal with
his new team, and he said he doesn't expect anything
from Atlanta right away.
Speaker 6 (20:05):
Down Atlanta fathertons know nothing about me as a football player,
and as about me as a man or you know
that stuff. They really know my previous resume, and so
how can you really demand or act or anything that
I haven't worked for And that's that's where I've been
(20:27):
in my whole life.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
So I'm gonna work for it. Man, he's gotta be
a good player for they've been looking for a pass
rush from the edge forever. It's a great pick cup.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
I'm gonna send that video to Hassan Reddick. I got
his cell phone number. I'm gonna send that to him
and see what he thinks.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
You have a cell phone number? Yeah, how'd you get that?
I got? I know people.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
I'm gonna send it to him and be like, what
do you think? He's not gonna reply unless.
Speaker 4 (20:47):
You're gonna send him at tech curse me out. Yeah,
with the video of this saying, look, Matthew, you're I'm
not expecting anything. I'm gonna go out and play and
earn it. That's sound Reddick, what's up getting camp buddy?
Speaker 1 (20:57):
What sounds like you're being like fanboyn Is that not allowed? No?
I would be more of a perfect I wouldn't be
texting Hassan Redick goading him. Well, I'm not goading him.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
Say hey, check this out.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
This is interesting.
Speaker 4 (21:10):
Now.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
See, I'm sure you could just send it to him
and just want Why don't you send it to I
don't I don't like his agent. Is it too aggressive?
Speaker 7 (21:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (21:19):
I think should I identify myself? Hey, this is Jason
McIntyre from The Herd.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
No, don't you don't? No, just say rando, weirdo control
of a Jets fan? Hey, what's up? Final story? This
is awesome. This is just breaking here. In the last
couple of hours.
Speaker 4 (21:33):
Oklahoma State, your guy, Gundhy, They announced today they will
be adding QR codes to their college football helmets that
will link to the team's general nil collective colin this
is smart business. The program expects TV broadcast to use
tight shots to highlight the QR code, at which point
(21:53):
they plan on sharing post game photos on social media.
The feature the decals. Gundhy said this is a revolutionary step.
He's not wrong here. I don't love Gundy, but he's
not wrong for Oklahoma State football. And they expect every
fans to really have an impact on the team. And
you know what that means, right Oklahoma State bros watching
(22:14):
maybe looped up a little bit, big touchdown in the
fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Yeah, I'm gonna send him money. That's gonna happen. Colin.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
This is a super smart move from Oklahoma State.
Speaker 7 (22:22):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
You look kind of well, it's better than your Hassan Reddick.
So you're like upset by that. Okay, I don't know,
I don't believe. What if we just you know, put
something up like this coward you are? You know this
see it? So if you did that and when people
went to that during the show, what would happen?
Speaker 4 (22:41):
You could just throw us five bucks, ten bucks, and
you could you know, buy more jet skis and go
on vacations.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
That's a good idea. Do you really like we need
more money from the audience?
Speaker 4 (22:51):
I mean, Oklahoma State, you think their nil collective needs
money from broke college kids.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
So basically you think we should just put that on
the screen and if somebody wants to donate. Yeah, and
I guarantee you know how many donations we'd get over
the course of a year. Zero eight zero. Myso bring
it down.
Speaker 3 (23:08):
Who wants to fun? Jmack And then we could say
who was the fun?
Speaker 4 (23:11):
I think it's elite, coastal elite, Colin Cowder.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
It feels a bit over the top. J Mack for

Speaker 1 (24:24):
All right, Joel Cloud, he's very busy. He's doing podcast
stuff up like the top floor where it's executives and
keys to Mercedes Benz and podcasts. All the rich guys
are upstairs. It's not in this big studio like you have.
You know, it's just a elevator doesn't even go to
that floor. It's like you have to have the special
key cards. So you have. You have Penn State, West Virginia,
(24:46):
which is it's interesting because James Franklin can obviously recruit. Yeah,
they got athletes everywhere, and you know, they kind of
feel like they're at home. They're a handful for a
Michigan or Ohio state. And I wonder now here comes Oregon,
USC Washington and it's like I kind of feel like
Penn State better be lined up now that otherwise they
(25:09):
go from like that dangerous number three to the back
end of the bullpen.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:13):
So a couple of things on Penn SA. First of all,
that game that is a tough game because West Virginia
got on a hot streak late last year. They've got
some good players in that environment is going to be incredible.
It'd be incredible. Cannot wait for Country Road. Now that
being said, Penn State. A couple of things on Penn
State really three. Number one is this is the recruiting
(25:34):
class that they've been pointing to for a couple of years. Okay,
you know their quarterback Drew Aller, Nick Singleton, k Tron Allen,
Abdul Carter like, these guys are are NFL players, and
a lot of their fan base and me included, have
been pointing to this season as a year that they
need to take a step forward. Okay, So that leads
to kind of the next things, which are their schedule
(25:55):
for Big Ten Standards is softer than others. They don't
face or again, they don't face Michigan, So their toughest
game is hosting Ohio State. Now that's nothing to sneeze at, obviously,
Ohio State, at least for me, is the number one
team in the country in the preseason, but as it
could be in the big tent. That's fairly manageable. So
(26:15):
you've got this manageable schedule, and you've got this recruiting
class that you've been pointing to for a couple of
years with NFL talent all over the field, and their
defenses is always incredible. They get a new offensive coordinator.
He comes from Kansas. He helped Lance Leipold really rebuild
the Jayhawks. His name is Andy cotele Nicky. I believe
Drew Aller of their quarterback takes a step forward. Okay,
(26:38):
so then that brings me to that phrase step forward.
They're with me for a moment because Colin Penn State
in the last eight seasons, if we would have had
a twelve team playoff format like we have this year,
they would have made six playoffs. Wow, team what they are.
No team has been hurt more by a lack of
a team twelve team playoff than Penn State. I like
(27:00):
that six times now. In those six years, their average
rank would have been nine and a half right around there.
So in the playoff but not elite and we've known
this to be true. This is what played out because
they can't get over the hump of Michigan and Ohio State,
in particular in their own division. Now they don't have divisions.
So for me, everything points to Penn State taking a
(27:22):
step forward. That means to me being in the top
eight in the playoff and hosting a first round college
football playoff game in Happy Valley. In fact, I've got
my new podcast coming out. I believe tomorrow is going
to have my predictions for the twelve team playoff, and
I can just tell you right now they're hosting a
first round playoff game. That's what I think Penn State is.
(27:42):
I think I asked a question and you delivered. That's
a nice job. I like, how if you guys don't
know this yet, but I see that I have a
hard out at eleven fifty two because he's got a
meeting with Shanks. That guy's up there having a slot.
He's up there eating a sloppy Joe. He can't wait
an extra two minutes. They put that on the paper. Literally,
I have your show is overageous. Okay, you go got
(28:02):
some big ones this year. You got Alabama, Wisconsin, you
got great games. I'm gonna throw this out there. I
don't know if we put you on this Michigan. Yeah,
so I'm I'm hearing things at USC they like they
that you know what they're saying right now, You media
people don't understand Miller Moss is way better than you think.
(28:24):
I'm Lincoln gets the offense back. No Oregon, No, Ohio
State rebuild, Michigan, Penn State home, Notre Dame home, and
a lot of people. Yeah, now where do you like
because you're not a homer like I'm called on US City. No,
but I'm i am. I'm bullish on USBC this year.
I'm I'm very bullish. I their defense, everyone can roll
(28:46):
their eyes on their defense being better. Their defense is
going to be better. All you have to do is
line up properly and their defense. I'm not joking, like
like I know that that sounds bad, but like the
schematics were so bad years of control football. I mean
in some respects, yes, I think that's that's probably accurate.
Their defense is going to be better, and then this
(29:08):
notion that their offense will take a step back is false.
It's false, and the record bears that out since twenty seventeen,
when Lincoln Riley became a head coach at Oklahoma, their
offense in terms of yards per play, and I think
yards per play is the best metric we have for
really your efficiency as an offense. How good are your
NFL betters? Use that's a big stat yards per play.
(29:32):
When you look at that stat, Lincoln Riley's offenses since
seventeen have been first, first, first, eleventh, third, sixth, like
they're not going anywhere. It hasn't mattered what quarterback he
has had, and in fact, whatever quarterback he has, as
long as that quarterback stays within the system, is generally
a Heisman Trophy candidate. So their offense should be just fine.
(29:53):
If they beat LSU, this is the big one. If
they beat LSU in Week one, then they have a
legitimate chance to play Notre Dame for the right to
go to the College Football Playoff. I think Chip Kelly
wins Ohio State the national championship. I think they lose
at Eugene. It's going to be such a homecoming for Jack.
That game is going to be insane. Did we put
(30:13):
you on that one? NBC's got that one. Oh, screw
those guys that game is meaningless anyway, the point being
the point being so good. I think whoever wins that
game loses later. So if Oregon wins it and they
meet again, so I think Ohio State, that's all right.
I don't think that's fair. I don't think people understand
(30:36):
what Chip Kelly delivers. For a team that was missing something,
they did not run the ball as effectively as they
needed to over the course of the last two and
three years. This is why Michigan became the more dominant
program is because Michigan dominated at the line of scrimmage.
If you go back to what even Ryan Day was
(30:57):
early in his career, what Urban Meyer was at Ohio State.
They ran the football incredibly well. JK. Dobbins ran the
ball for two thousand yards. They're not just an air
it out all the time offense. They had an inability
to run it efficiently. Over the last couple of years,
now they got pretty They have Traveon Henderson and quid
Sean Jenkins. That's the best running back duo in college football.
(31:17):
Chips much more of a power run coach than people think.
And he runs the ball. He's just going to say
he runs the snot out of the ball. Everywhere that
he's been, they've run the ball as well as anybody
in their own conference. Even when he was with the Eagles,
they were I believe they led the league in rushing
in one of the years that he was the head
coach with the Philadelphia Eagles. I expect them to take
(31:38):
a step forward offensively because of that, because of Chip Kelly.
And then just quickly for Ohio State, why do I
have them ranked number one?
Speaker 6 (31:44):
One?
Speaker 1 (31:45):
Chip Kelly running the football, yeah, two, that's gonna be
the best defense in America. Their front four is loaded
with NFL talent. They're back seven loaded with NFL talent.
I don't see many people scoring points on Ohio State.
And so that will allow them to bring Will Howard,
their quarterback that they named last week. Bring him along
(32:05):
Chip will get him comfortable running the football. They've got
elite players on the outside, like Ohio State's going to
be a handful. All right, You've got a big meeting.
That's what it says on the screen. That's incredible. I've
got time. I've got what I've always got time for you,
I know. But when it's like big meeting, layers, I mean,
you're like what well, noon, what literally possibly could the
(32:30):
meeting be about? Klatt? We want you to be available
every saturdays as fall. I will tell you this. I
will tell you this when I'm in this seat. This
is second only to call in the games. This is
one of my favorite spots in my way, having right
here this chair. And by the way, when you go
looking up at you when you go out, do those
(32:53):
college coaches come to you and say, hey, you may
want to listen to Coward a little bit. No, it's
actually the exact opposite. They say, like, hey, keep keep
Collin's feet to the fire, you know, like hold him accountable,
you know, keep giving him the business. And I'm like, listen,
I will handle my son. But what does the public say?
They say they love this. Okay, they say more of this,
(33:17):
more of this. All right, Well you go to your
big meeting, you go get a raise. We're just eating
seenus riddle down here trying to get to the next
rest area. Well that's incredible, that's all we're doing. I
have houses all over the country. Okay, well we're done.
The show's virtually over. I don't even think we have
a show after us today? Do we? First things first
is off this week. I'm gonna say something shoulder sore
(33:39):
from carrying this place airing right now. I tell you what,
you know, who gives the best piggyback ride in America
Colin Coward. Okay, USC make the playoff ten seconds fifteen,
I'd say they're the first one out. Yeah, because I
had that Notre Dame game. I don't like the way
they match up with Notre Dame, that's right. And I
don't like how they match up with Penn State. I
(34:00):
don't either, And they get them at home, and I
think they lose both. I just think those are tough matchups.
I would say they got a shot against LSU. I
think they've got a shot against LSU. I'm gonna pick
them in that game. Wow, what a finished, strong clap.
There we go.
