Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
What up? Welcome in. This is the Herd. Wherever you
may be and however you may be making us part
of your day. Thanks so much. I'm do dot Leebian
for Colin Cowherd, who I am told makes his triumphant
return next week. So the DAWs Cowboys are always interesting.

(00:59):
And I've said this on my show that It's Which,
which follows this show on most Fox Sports traded iHeart
and then on the iHeartRadio apps called the Doug Gottlieb Show,
is that we can. We can make fun of Jerry
Jones and all the things he says and his incessant
desire to get to the Super Bowl. But if I

(01:22):
do grow a little tired of people saying, well, Jerry
Jones needs to give away some of the personnel decisions.
Don't get me wrong, I love watching the Cowboys lose
in the playoffs as much or more than anybody right
now living in Green Bay, just thinking back to how
enjoyable was to watch the Green Bay Packers, with a

(01:44):
defense that wasn't particularly good last year, go in and
what they put up forty eight on the Cowboys and
the two pick sixes in the first half.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
Like.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
That was that was just enjoyable. I'm not a Cowboys fan,
I'm not a Cowboys hair whatever reason, that was just
enjoy Don't get me wrong, I love watching the Cowboys lose. Okay, America, don't.
It's like, man, you want you want to isolate yourself.
Tell people who that wasn't an enjoyable experience. It was.

Speaker 5 (02:12):
It was.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
But I would also tell you that there's no one
who works in the NFL covers the NFL knows anything
about the NFL is like, eh, they don't have very
good players. Everyone believes they have really good players, really
good players, and to maintain their level of success over
the last three four years without top five draft picks

(02:36):
continues to be impressive. The problem is that when you
draft your own, you got to pay your own and
here they are once again in that cycle where they
paid CD lamb and they're gonna have to You know
that you have Michael Parsons and the elite defensive player,
You're gonna have to pay him eventually. And then Dak's in
the last last year of his contract. Here is dak

(02:59):
answering questions from reporters best contract situation.

Speaker 6 (03:02):
As I said, well back in camp, it's it's two
parts of this. Both sides have to come to the groament.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
You don't need a deal done before the season.

Speaker 6 (03:10):
I don't need to know, No, do what you like
it done before the season. I think it says a
lot if it is or if it isn't. But however,
it doesn't doesn't really matter to me, to be honest
with you, What is this if it isn't, just how
people feel. That's the business and the nature of this,
this game that we play. Uh yeah, I mean I
stopped honestly listening to things that he says to the

(03:30):
media a long time ago, so it doesn't really hold
away with me.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Yeah, I mean, he is saying talk is cheap. He
is saying Jerry talks a lot, and it doesn't but
which we all you know, and he's able to get
away with some of that but doesn't it feel like
Daxon's quarterback because he knows that's where he can get
his most consistent pay. And and for Jerry, they're like
the cowboys are in that situation where it's not that

(03:58):
they love their relationship or love their quiquarterback, but do
we really want to go out and find another quarterback?
I guarantee you there are what do we think, Ryan
forty percent of guys, fifty percent of guys, and I
would say women, many of you are in the same
place as well, where you're in a relationship. You're like,

(04:19):
do you love him?

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (04:21):
I mean sure, and we've been together a long time.
Do you want to spend every waking day with him?
Like everyone? Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure, whatever, Well, so why
don't you just dump him and find some els like
oh my god? Do you know? Like then I got
to do pictures and I got to do a dating

(04:43):
app or I got to new people, and yeah, maybe
eventually you find some some you know, some incredible nine
or eight think who doesn't know that she's a she
can be a ten or whatever. She and you have
a great relationship, But getting to that place and going
through first dates and you know, the holidays are coming up.

(05:05):
You're like, we mean the holidays are in December August, Like, yeah,
but you can't bring somebody to a holiday party or
to your family unless you've been dating for a while.
And right now, like if we start, if I start
dating somebody new, like we got to the holidays, you're
alone again. It's miserable.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
It's sort of a sliding scale, right when you asked
about like fifty percent is the percentage is much lower
when you're younger, and then as you grow older and
the marriages slash relationships are longer and have been decades now,
you start getting a much higher percentage of they're just

(05:44):
together for convenience. Yeah, because at some point when you're
married for forty years, you're like, I'm not starting over.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
What's the point.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yeah, that's that's pretty much it, because you're just going like, eh, yeah,
she's she's a level of annoying that I can tolerate.
And I'm sure and women are probably the same thing, like,
oh god, he's a level of annoying that I can tolerate,
which is dak like, look, we're gonna win twelve games
a year, no off the field issues, Good dude, everybody

(06:15):
likes some great backstory. The whole story with him is amazing.
Is he an all time great quarterback? No? Are you
in a Super Bowl? Probably not?

Speaker 2 (06:27):
But will be good every year?

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Well why don't you just try and find a great one,
Like well, okay, look at the Miami Dolphins. They search
for thirty years to find their replacement for Damn Reno
and they have two and we all know too us
not good enough. And the Buffalo bill searched thirty years
for replacement from Jim Kelly. Josh Allen's really really good.

(06:50):
Was he worth a thirty year wait? Probably not.

Speaker 7 (06:56):
So.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
I just it is that it's a relationship of convenience
and it works both ways. Like, let's be honest, you're
the Dallas Cowboys, Like, man, what if we had a
legit dude? Like, what if we had one of the
elite throwers? We had so many guys, I mean, ceedee
Lambs so good we are, so we have so many
weapons offensively. Yeah, but if we don't have him and

(07:22):
we yeah, sure we save money. Because my proposal will
be going to the draft. You know, go get a
guy through the draft and you don't have to be
a first round pick. I mean brock Purty. Obviously those
are a few and far between, mister irrelevant, but there's
got to be somebody that you know, the difference is
paying a guy a million a year or paying a
guy sixty million a year, like you mean to tell
me for fifty nine million dollars. We can't go out

(07:43):
and find a couple guys and make that guy look
better as a quarterback. Of course we can't. So why
don't we do it? Well? Cause trying to find that
next quarterbacks really really hard, really hard, and those years
almost never work out. So here was dak answering questions
about his quarterback situation. That's his contract situation.

Speaker 6 (08:08):
As I said, well back in camp, it's two parts
of this. Both sides have to come to the groom.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
You don't need a deal done before the season.

Speaker 5 (08:15):
I don't need to know, No, do what you like
it done before the season.

Speaker 6 (08:18):
I think it says a lot if it is or
if it isn't. But however it doesn't. It doesn't really
matter to me, to be honest with you, What does
this say if it isn't just how people feel.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
It says a lot. Says how they feel is that
we're doing that we're doing that again. That's the Lamar Jackson.
You don't love Lamar unless you're paying fifty million dollars
a year. Like, yeah, Dak, we've played you a lot
of money for a long time. We still love you.
We just don't sixty million dollars a year love you,
especially when you have the largest cap hit in the

(08:48):
history of the sport right now.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
I mean it's sort of to your point about how
it goes both ways, Like I mean, Aaron Rodgers will
see how things eventually turn out for the Jets, But
I mean you want to talk about wanting to go
to where the grass is greener. I mean most people
would say he clearly had a much better situation in
Green Bay, and now we may end up going to

(09:16):
regret it with the Jets and with Dak. Yes, there
are going to be the rare circumstances like Tom Brady
to the Bucks to where teams may be fully ready
to go and there's just a quarterback away. But I
mean the Cowboys have done a good job of surrounding
him with enough talent to win a lot in the

(09:38):
regular season. And if one of these teams that hasn't
been good and you know is finally hitting the open market, Like,
I don't know teams that could be in the quarterback
situation next year, like the Carolina Panthers if everything goes south,
Like do you want to play in Carolina? First?

Speaker 3 (09:56):
But here's the other thing though, with Dak okay, and
again I think is good, But who in that division
scares he's a quarterback. Jalen Hurts had a one great year.
He's good, He's okay. He's not the best quarterback on earth, right,
Nobody thinks Danny Dime's gonna be the quarterback next year.
And you got a rookie in in DC who people

(10:19):
think is gonna be good. But we don't know if
Jane Danel's gonna be good. Right, So you have you
are the most veteran quarterback in that division, you got
a coach's one super Bowl, You've been to the playoffs
the past two years. Like what more do we need?
Either you can or you cannot do it? So I
don't If I'm Dak, I s t f U, I don't.

(10:40):
I don't say anything because the only thing that matters
is how he does in the playoffs this year. And
are the Cowboys gonna you know, Grin and Barrett if
he doesn't perform well in the playoffs yet again, and
they go like, do we want to move on? Do
we want to stay with the same guy?

Speaker 5 (10:57):
All right?

Speaker 3 (10:58):
Coming up next year in the Herd, the forty nine
ers finally got the bringing a Yuke deal figured out
what's it mean for Trent Williams. Well, that's John Middlecoff.
He joins us next.

Let's welcome in front of the show. Friend of Collins
from the Mind. Of course, you hear him his podcast
on the Volume podcast Network. He's none other than John Middlecoff.
Three and Out is the podcast and John, let's get
into last night. Okay, let's just start prospect wise, the
guy who evaluates. What are your thoughts on Shador's NFL quarterback?

Speaker 5 (12:02):
Well, he's clearly, I mean, a pretty special talent right movement,
arm strength, deep ball accuracy, playmaking. We've seen the last
handful of years guys with those physical skills go really
really high. Now, you know last night was at one
point in time you're like, oh, this could go really

(12:23):
bad for these guys. They showed a little adversity. End
of the day. It's North Dakota State, who to me,
it's still they're closer to like a Mountain West program
like that. That's a real win. But he's going to
be evaluated to like truly go one because let's say
Carson Beck or you know, Quinn Yours, who I'm not

(12:45):
that big a fan of, but they're playing real teams.
It's the SEC. He's playing the Big twelve, which could
be pretty good. Right, Well, we'll see, he's got some
talented teams on paper, and he's got an opportunity I think,
I mean to solidify himself as the top two or
three player in the draft because there's no disputing his skills.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
Yeah, so I guess there's a bunch of layers to it.
Does Dion be and his dad make you want to
stay away.

Speaker 5 (13:16):
Now? Because I mean Dion was that way as a
player and he was an all time great. Now the
difference is you could be this huge, crazy personality, especially
like Dion was in college and play corner or play
wide receiver and is what it is a little different quarterback.
So that that is the And I've said this for
a while on the podcast, I think the hard thing

(13:38):
for scouts is gonna be is to truly get the
information when you go into that program, right, because like,
how are you going to dig on what happened on
social media? Right? Who's gonna It's not like Dion's gonna
bad mouth them? And again why I say bad mouth them?
I don't think there's nothing bad, but you just nitpick

(13:58):
these top guys. Part of getting I would say Shaudor
is obviously getting the package of his dad, which is
a positive because of the lineage, the name, how serious
they take football. But there's also like this other element
to it which I don't know. I was thinking about
it last night, Like there's no question like can the
kid handle money. Well, he's grown up rich, you know,

(14:21):
I mean like he's grown up around it, so I
want to face him. It's more and does he get
along with his teammates? I would say that's the biggest
question mark beside like his brother in Travis, what's he
like to the random offensive lineman? And that's really what
they got to dig on, which could be the difference
of him and Carson Beck. Right, Why one team chooses
one guy over another.

Speaker 3 (14:43):
Camp I'm like Dion tried to say, was because he
was trying to get his buddy a big play. Why
else would you throw the ball with a minute and
a half to go the other team having one time out,
unless you're trying to pad your stats.

Speaker 5 (14:59):
Yeah, you know, in a game like that, it's hard.
I think the time management in college football we've nitpicked
the NFL, which can be bad. It's really bad in
college football. That's obviously insane. You could argue the North
Dakota State coach not calling timeouts before the two minute warning,

(15:21):
which is a new rule. They have a two minute
warning recently in college football. So these rules ever changing.
But yeah, the Dion thing, they got pretty lucky. But
at the end of the day. Once they punted all
the way down there and they didn't have any timeouts,
it was gonna be really hard North Dakota State. I
was pretty impressed right to hang with those athletes, especially

(15:42):
on the outside early on, It's like, how are they
ever going to get a stop there? That's an impressive program,
I'm gonna say. I thought that was a pretty good
win for Colorado, you know, I really did, because it
could have easily got the other way. They showed a
little guts. But now it gets real. I mean on
the road at night in Nebraska. I think the big
question mark Doug because Shad or the quarterbacks, like, I'm

(16:03):
not worried about as long as he stays healthy, he's
going to go high. Is I think Travis Hunter is
one of the more fascinating prospects really of my adult life.
You know, he's a corner wide receiver. He plays every snap.
The NFL would love him to play corner because it's
much harder to find top ten corners than it is
top wide receivers. But how is he gonna do? You

(16:25):
know in the Big twelve. Arizona's got a guy that
many of you as a top ten player Oklahoma State
has a really good kind of small, shifty wide receiver.
I'm sure there are other receivers that are going to
emerge in the Big twelve. You're gonna want him on
that guy, But he's such a dynamic wide receiver. Can
he play every snap against Oklahoma State, against Utah, against Arizona,

(16:48):
against Kansas State. It's going to be fascinating to watch.
I know he's in great shape, but he's like the
college otani right now.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
Yeah, well, last year he wore down, So we'll send then,
you know, we'll see if he doesn't wear down, right,
I mean, and if you remember, I'm trying to think
which which team it was, It just targeted him at
the end of the.

Speaker 5 (17:07):
Game Stamford remember Stamford corner.

Speaker 3 (17:10):
Yes, and he's through him every time, even though he's
the best player, just to wear him out. And it worked.

Speaker 5 (17:15):
And think about the Pac twelve good wide receivers, Big
twelve good wide receivers. It's even if the guy's not
a top ten pick, if he's just like a fourth
round I mean, that's a long day at the office.

Speaker 3 (17:25):
No question about it. John Middalcoff joining US three and
Out as the podcast Niners get a YUK. My point was,
I don't think that changes them all that much. I
think Trent Williams is a much bigger and more important
get for them. Where are you on a yuk? And
his level of importance in comparison to Trump Williams?

Speaker 5 (17:45):
Yeah, well, I mean what did an exhausting saga? As
Chefter said, the same contract have been on the table
for three weeks. Lanch and Kyle Rady to jump off
a bridge every press conference at the fifty three man
cut down, and I watched a decent amount of them,
you know, TMS or the forty Niners look like they
just got hit by a bus, and I think they

(18:05):
were ready to start finding them, you know. And that's
Brandon aiyuk. They already tried to trade him, he said, No, obviously, Trent.
I would imagine he's asking for you know, sixty seventy
million dollars right now, and the forty nine ers have
gone back and forth. He hasn't kind of been over
a table. But he's also thirty five, thirty six years old,

(18:28):
you know. It's it's it's a tough spot. But they
can't operate without him, and they won't operate without him,
so I would imagine, wouldn't shock me before the game's
kickoff on Saturday. You know, something gets done in the
next I don't know, eighteen hours because you the other
thing is older player, big guy. You want to get
him in cardio shape that first game against the Jets.

(18:49):
A lot of question marks with the Jets. One thing
we don't question, even with Reddick m Ia. They do
have a lot of bodies up front. They can run fast,
so you just to not practice. I don't know what
he's been doing. I'm sure he's been working out, but
there's a big difference between running some gassers with a
trainer and you know, repping against Nick Bosa and Leonard

(19:09):
Floyd every day in practice.

Speaker 3 (19:12):
No question about it, none, none at all. Okay, give
me some give me some buzz you're hearing from Run
the League There there have been some comments that the
Jets locker room is still a mess. What are you
hearing about the state of the Jets heating end of
the season.

Speaker 5 (19:28):
Yeah, I think there's a lot of people wondering what
this is going to look like. I texted someone in
the middle of camp that was around them a lot,
and I said, how does Rogers look and he's like,
To be honest, it's impossible to tell. BB's training camps
are joke, even though Rogers like way more physical, well
relative to the modern day football, but it's he's not

(19:52):
getting tested. So I think the question mark with him
is specifically going to be how he moves everyone. But
he's still spin it well, Dan Marino sixty five still
spins it like Aaron rod is gonna be able to
spin it as long as he has a right arm.
To me, the question mark's going to be movement. And
let's face it, like is a Son Reddick just going
to show up next week or is he enough? Because

(20:15):
if he doesn't, like that's kind of a big deal.
They lost the pass rusher to the Eagles they traded
for him to replace him, and if he just truly
just continues to hold out, that is a big loss,
even though they quote unquote have never had him, like
they were banking on this guy to help out and
give them I don't know nine to eleven facts, So

(20:35):
that's if he doesn't play against the forty nine ers,
that's a problem. But it all hinges on Rogers and
does he look like a forty year old guy coming
up in Achilles, or does he look like you know,
he still looks pretty good. You know, I don't know
what I've seen on NFL network, which is as the
only eclipse you've seen of him playing, because he doesn't
play it into the preseason games. It looks like he's

(20:57):
kind of half asking it. But I don't know if
that's just he's kind of taking it easy, or that's
his new speed. You know, And we have recent memory,
and all these guys are different. You and I have
talked about this. Sure, Breeze fell off a cliff. Roblisberger
fell off a cliff. Manning fell off a cliff. Now
all those guys, it was their arms. You know, Rogers
not gonna be his arm. But his movement was such

(21:20):
a huge part of his greatness that he just wouldn't
be the same player. And the forty nine ers like
he goes outside, Fred Warner's chasing him. He used to
be able to at least extend it for a second
or two. Now it's gonna be fascinating to watch because
if that's gone. I couldn't like the Jets as much
as I mean, they have better betting odds than the Bills.
I get the Bills lost some players, but I couldn't

(21:43):
pick the Chips before Week one over the Bills, could you.

Speaker 3 (21:46):
No, In no way I could have picked the Jets
over the Bills in Week one, not at all. I
want to ask you about Dak, and you know, I
mean I feel like they're in that relationship of convenience right.
It's like, look, Dak's good, he's a good quarterback, he's
a good guy to win double digy games? Is he

(22:08):
gonna win the super Bowl?

Speaker 4 (22:09):
And know?

Speaker 3 (22:10):
How do I know? I have enough data now to
tell me like could you I guess? But you know,
Niner game last year, Packer game, I mean nine game
two years ago, Packer game last year is like it
is what it is. But the Cowboys sitting there going like, yeah,
you know, like we don't have Dak, then we got
to go start this process over with we got it.
You know. It's like a dating thing. You know, we

(22:30):
had the holidays coming up, and we gotta have a
relationship before the holidays. It feels like more of a
relationship of convenience than it is. Hey, we're still super
into each other.

Speaker 5 (22:39):
Well, I think the worst place to be stuck in
is where the Dolphins are. They have a guy who's
a credible starting quarterback but can't win big games, and
it feels like he's got no chance in the playoffs.
Dak to me, is like on that golf level, and
I know Golf's had won playoff games his team's and
he's become a really good player. You know, some people

(23:01):
might tick off over Dak, but I think Dak can
win playoff games. But what I know he can do
is go on the road and beat the Eagles, right,
go on the road or at home in December and
win a big game. So to me, there's value in that.
And that's why I think the Cowboys are in such
a predicament. Like at the end of the day, the
Cowboys would have gladly given him what they gave to us, right,

(23:23):
they'd give him that contract, and Herbie Dak wants probably
fifteen to twenty percent more than Trevor Lawrence just gone.
And then that's where it gets difficult. And this is
what is You know, this is a guy over thirty.
This is his fourth contract, or I guess this would
be his third contract because he franchised. You know, he's
played out on you know, nine ten years of contracts,

(23:44):
so basically you're just taking it in from year eleven
to fifteen at just huge premiums, and that's where you
get nervous. But what else are they gonna do, Doug.
I mean, they tried to and I don't blame Jerry
tried to strike a little oil with Trey Lance. I
mean the guy. He's one of the worst quarterbacks on
a roster and currently so they're kind of sucked.

Speaker 3 (24:05):
There were people, there were people last year when they
traded from like, oh got our next starting quarterback? Like no,
do you think San Francisco would give up on him?
And they thought he was any good?

Speaker 5 (24:17):
Well, think about this, Doug. And this is not to
beat up Trey Lance. It was a weird twenty twenty year.
He clearly shouldn't have been drafted anywhere in the first
He should have been like a fifth round pick. But
Mike McCarthy, who I'm actually gonna start pivoting on Mike
McCarthy because everyone's anti Mike McCarthy proven to be pretty good.

Speaker 4 (24:36):
Right.

Speaker 5 (24:37):
He wins regular season games, he can coach the quarterback,
and he can call offense. But he's good quarterbacks. Kyle
Shanahan's good to quarterbacks and this guy can't play, So
I think that that clearly is scrapped. I mean, the
only reason the Cowboys kept him is because they traded
for a salary that's pretty large. They have to pay
him no matter what. But I think they're just kind
of stuck with Dak. And at the end of the day,

(24:59):
you know, even if Dak they don't sign an extension
during the season, he makes it the free agency. If
Jerry wants keeping, he's gonna keep him because who leaves
the Cowboys if the money's the same. And it's very
hard for these other teams to offer as much money
because Dallas no state income tax. Even if the Vegas
Vegas gets involved, you're telling me you're gonna go to
the Raiders over the Cowboys. I mean, come on, back's

(25:21):
not that dumb.

Speaker 3 (25:22):
No, he's not. He's not. He's definitely not that dumb.
Who is the team that we're not talking about? You
and I talk about this every week. Okay, we're getting
closer and closer. Who's the one who's this year's Houston Texans?
The surprise?

Speaker 5 (25:38):
You know, I go. I've gone back and forth on
these two teams. I think the AFC nor is gonna
be worse. Right, they got three teams in and I think,
you know, the Ravens got a lot of question marks, beangals,
help and just their contract situations. The Browns, I mean,
their quarterback just might not be any good. I do
think one of these two teams. A lot of people

(25:59):
push back. Charge have enough talent, okay, but their coach
always wins. And the Broncos. I don't know which two
it is, but I or which one it is out
of those two, but I think one of those two
teams gonna make the playoffs. I would lean the Broncos.
He's had a year now to kind of build up
this roster. Maybe the Chargers more equipped next year. But
I think we're gonna see two teams out of the
AFC West. I mean, think about it. If you remove

(26:22):
Andy Reid, I mean Sean Payton, and if you just
rank coaches in the AFC, Sean Payton and Mike tom
Or and Jim Harbon here at the top of the lift.
So we stayed all the time coach quarterback. We got
Jim Harbon. Justin Herbert, I think bo Nick is a
pretty good bet for Rookie of the year. So if
you think he's gonna have a good season relative to

(26:42):
a rookie, I think the Bronco They won a game
last year. We talked about the Broncos rightfully, so like
they were like a four or five win team because
that's seventy point game six out in their mind. But
they actually weren't as bad as you think. And now
he likes the quarterback and he likes the team. A
tempted to take the Broncos. You can get him six
to one on dragoncons Douck to just to make the playoffs.

(27:04):
I'm stuck in seventeen.

Speaker 3 (27:08):
He's the one and only John middlcoff. Johnny Uh, can't
wait for the next pod. Enjoy the weekend of college
football like this is this is pretty much heaven right
like Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, all games and then
we get more next week. Oh so good.

Speaker 5 (27:26):
Hey, listen, say what you want about primetime And he's
done some crazy things and the treatment of the guy
on the way out was pretty embarrassing. But if I
would have told you two years ago, North Dakota State
and Colorado would have been the primetime night game to
kind of kick off Week one, and most people had
that on their television. No one, you know, that game
would have been put on True TV at nine thirty kickoffs.

(27:51):
So I that was fun last night. I thoroughly enjoyed that.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
I did too, And I'll watch when they played Nebraska
and I'll keep watching. Yeah, I mean, I don't think
for entertainment it's given us something great. The question becomes
and he's I don't feel like he's building a program there.
I feel like he's building assel.

Speaker 5 (28:09):
Do you think the Big twelve is going to be
tough on him? Because the PAC twelve was.

Speaker 3 (28:15):
Well, remember the PAC twelve that was like the best
of Pact. It was a great year. And I don't
think the Big twelves as talented. I don't think there's
there's layups in the league. But like, look they lost
to Stanford, who was kind of a layup in the league.
I think they're going to be better. I think where
they're going to suffer as he's next to on the

(28:37):
road Nebraska on the road in Colorado State. I think
they're a better team with a harder schedule in the preseason.

Speaker 5 (28:45):
I would and that Nebraska game obviously is a good member.
Last year the quarterback looked like me or you back there. Yeah,
this young guy Riola is just solid at night. That
place is going to be called bananas.

Speaker 3 (28:55):
Correct, Correct? John Middlecoff, three nows the podcast, Johnny, thanks
so much for joining. See Doug, let's get the herd
Line news with Ryan Music.

Speaker 2 (29:05):
No news. This is the herd Line News.

Speaker 4 (29:10):
All right, all right, all right, here we go pick
it up where you left off the NFL, Doug. You
touched on it there with John Middlecoff, one of his
potential surprise breakout teams, Denver Broncos, and well you know
they still may be looking for that franchise quarterback to
replace Peyton Manning been retired almost a decade now. As

(29:31):
you guys had discussed, they obviously drafted bo Nicks in
the first round. They've named him a starter for Week
one against the Seahawks. So clearly bo Nicks has impressed
Sean Payton and the coaching staff. But what does their
owner and CEO Greg Penner think of Nix. Well here's
what he had to say.

Speaker 7 (29:49):
I've been really impressed with his poise and maturity. There's
something about starting that many games in college that obviously
develops that, and I think he's he's got some incredible traits.
It was great to see how he played in the
first two preseason games. I had a chance to call
him after Sean announced that he'd be the starting quarterback.
Had had a great conversation with him.

Speaker 2 (30:10):
Then.

Speaker 7 (30:11):
You know, all rookies are going to go through some
ups and downs in their first season, and I told him,
we're gonna We're gonna support you. I'm excited to see
what he can do on the field and the rest
of this roster.

Speaker 4 (30:22):
We know Collin's very high on bow Knicks. He's made
that very clear going back to even last season at Oregon.
Where where do you stand on bon Nicks and his
NFL career prospects?

Speaker 8 (30:36):
I gotta sell you, I'm not if that doesn't say
anything right there.

Speaker 3 (30:42):
Well, listen, you and I have known I've known Colin
longer than you, but you've worked with them this close
to you for the last four or five years. Yeah,
you know, he and Sean became really good friends. And
you know when Seawan says I believe in this kid,
and you believe in on Like, what are you supposed
to say?

Speaker 1 (31:01):
Sure?

Speaker 3 (31:01):
Yeah, you know you no, my my friend who's won
a Super Bowl is an idiot.

Speaker 4 (31:08):
Well, it certainly became a a further confirmation of what
Colin had already previously thought. But because even early on,
with the success that bo Nicks was having at Oregon,
he was like, Oh, I really like bo Nicks. I
think he could do well in the NFL. And then

(31:29):
to your point, then when he gets the Sean Payton
stamp of approval and becomes a Bronco, now it's like,
oh my gosh, it's it could only be this. I've
I've never felt more validated about my previous thoughts about
uh bo Nicks for sure.

Speaker 3 (31:46):
Yeah, I My issue with bo Nix is he is
the same guy who had what I mean, who had
you know, issues winning on the road when he was
at Oregon. He was the same guy who struggled when
he was at Auburn. You know, he didn't, you know,
all of a sudden become that guy. You don't go

(32:06):
from sixteen to six, twelve and seven, eleven and three,
twenty nine and seven with Oregon and then forty five
and three like oh my gosh, you know, so you
had better talent and you're older and you're well coached.
Sure you know. It's like, do I think it'd be good? Sure?
Do I think he's gonna be great? I do not.
But I also think that that Sean's frustration with Russell,

(32:32):
and this is from people I know in Denver, was like,
Russell one is in capable of getting rid of the
ball quick and he wants to do his own thing,
and Shawn's just like, all I'm trying to do is
win a super Bowl here and help you, and you
don't want to be helped. So my guess would be
that Bo is really coachable and that helps him. So
I think Bo will be further along this year than
most rookies or most people would believe. I do think

(32:55):
there's a little lower ceiling than Colin is leading to believe,
But a lot of that is Colin kind of echoing
the praiser Sean Paige.

Speaker 4 (33:04):
All right, we'll wrap up with this. Brandon Nayuk's been paid,
Seedee Lamb's been paid. Now the spotlight turns fully focused
onto Bengals wide receiver Jamar Chase. He's been a hold
in throughout all of training camp, and according to NFL
insider Ian Rappaport, Chase is seeking a deal that either
ties or exceeds the contract signed by Justin Jefferson, currently

(33:27):
the highest paid receiver in the league by one cent
according to Ian Rappaport. So Jamar Chase looking for that
one cent more so he can claim the title of
highest paid receiver in the league.

Speaker 3 (33:41):
He'll probably get it. But it's like, what are we doing?
At some point? Do you just want to look at
your client and go what are you doing? What are
you actually doing? You look like the biggest ass clown
on earth? And the agent is probably part of it,
because the agent wants to go around going like, hey,
you know, I got the guy the biggest contract. Who heirs?

Speaker 2 (34:02):
God?

Speaker 3 (34:03):
What is the matter with people? It's always crazy to
me on how NFL football. We're told, and rightfully so,
that football is their greatest team game ever. Yet when
you get that moment to get your contract, can I
just just make it about me so I'm the highest
paid guy even for a day. Dude, get over yourself.

(34:23):
You're gonna be a Bengal. You're gonna play for the Bengals.
You know, if it works out for them, fine, but
just know if that is your goal, want its super selfish.
But two, a really smart negotiator will allow you to
do that. Okay, you get that we're gonna get something
else for return, and something else for return is probably
something you really actually want, and that is Ryan Music

(34:46):
with the news.

Speaker 2 (34:47):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
Herd line.

Speaker 3 (34:51):
I want to be the highest being guy and there
Aaron Rodgers. Some are saying, not a team player. We
get that information. We'll share it with you next in
the Herd.

Speaker 2 (35:02):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 8 (35:11):
Paully Fools Gohea with Tony Foosco. Yeah, as everybody knows,
we're the hosts of the award winning Polly and Tony
Foodsco Show.

Speaker 2 (35:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (35:18):
But instead of us telling you how great we are,
here's how Dan Packrick described us when he came on
our show.

Speaker 7 (35:23):
Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated.

Speaker 5 (35:27):
What what are you doing?

Speaker 2 (35:28):
Were interrupting our promo? Yeah, it wasn't talking about you.

Speaker 3 (35:31):
You took those clips totally out of context.

Speaker 8 (35:34):
Oh yeah, Well, after this promo, I'm gonna take you
out and beat you.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
Let me put this into context. Shut up.

Speaker 8 (35:41):
Yeah, anyway, just listen to the Paully and Tony Fusco
show on Iart Radio, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get
your podcasts.

Speaker 3 (35:47):
Yea, Doug Godlivin for Colin. This is the Herd in
Fox Sports Radio. I discovered jay Lab headphones that were great.
The jay Buds lucks over ere noise canceling headphones are awesome,
especially when I'm traveling. Find the Blue Box at Walmart, Target,
best Buy and more, or visit jay Lab dot come.

(36:08):
They have these anonymous NFL survey it's this one's an
anonymous NFL agent in the Athletic. When asked who's got
the most unstable franchise, the answer is the Jets. Again
this from one NFL agent. There is complete disarray over there.

(36:29):
Look at how they've handled Aaron Rodgers. As one player
had more power than him, he skipped any camp. They've
been unable to convert him into a team player. The
vibe inside the building is terrible. Now when I see
those those comments come from you know, when I see

(36:50):
those comments come from another GM or another player, well
then I go they're clearly just trying to make everybody
feel like the Jets are a mess, but when it
comes from an agent, you're like, well, it's a little different.
Feels a little different, feel a little different anybody else,

(37:11):
And and you know, to be fair, I don't know,
I don't evaluate the Jets and the inside out every day,
but one could surmise that they got a lot of
stuff going on. They trade for Son Reddick, he apparently
had told him he didn't want a new contract. Now
he does. They haven't had him a day of camp,

(37:32):
you know, Aaron Rodgers not super happy at times.

Speaker 2 (37:36):
Stop.

Speaker 3 (37:36):
You've heard this before with young wide receivers, you know,
but some of these kinks, I'm sure it could have
been worked out that he'd been at camp earlier. The
comments coming out of Robert Salah, which we know where
he is, but it's not excused like just I mean, look,
the Jets have tried to figure this out, and I

(37:57):
actually ownership wise, like I don't know if Woody Johnson's
a good owner, I don't know about all, but this
is at least a franchise they've had tried to fix
the problem, the same problem we've talked a lot, a
lot about everybody else having when they lose a star quarterback, right,

(38:17):
trying to find that next guy. They've tried a million
times over. Right, they did have Brett Farr. They Sean Pennington,
they got a ton out of him when they had him.
They did have Brett Farry. Did they drafted Mark Sanchez,
They drafted Gino Smith. They've tried, They've drafted Sam Gerald,
They've tried. These have men'll fix this thing. By the way,

(38:41):
the reward is they open up at San Francisco, then
they go to the Titans, and I don't think the
Titans are particularly good, but the Titans are probably like, yeah,
that's a winnin ar schedule too, So could they get
to that stretch where that you have four games consecutively,
you're a home team, Sure, and it could be a
complete turnaround year. But you hear an agent say it,

(39:02):
you see some of the weird stuff with the a
Sonradic deal, and you start to ask yourself, like, are they.

Speaker 5 (39:10):
Really that much better?

Speaker 3 (39:12):
Have they really fixed the offensive line? And look, this
was brought to my attention, and I didn't really think
of it that way because I think most people who
know me know that I've been a Aaron Rodgers supporter.
I've thought Aaron Rodgers is better than other people have
regarded Aaron Rodgers. Now people are coming around to the hey,

(39:34):
maybe Aaron Rodgers is maybe the greatest player to ever
play this thing. But he did not have a great
final season in Green Bay, right, This is not two
thy twenty or twenty twenty one. In twenty twenty three,
he didn't have a great year. He just didn't. So

(39:59):
was that age? Was he just fed up with being there?
Was it that they had young wide receivers? All of
this would be is true and worthy of discussion, but
just the idea of Aaron Rodgers is gonna roll out
there forty touchdowns, three interceptions with another MVP like you.

Speaker 5 (40:14):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (40:16):
I don't know, not totally willing to go there at all.
But when you have people saying, not a team player,
he's got too much power, they can't make him go
to camp, the vibe inside the room is terrible. You

(40:37):
start to go, yeah, I don't know. All right, coming
up next, let's dive back into college football. And it's
it's fascinating because before Colin and I have known each other,
I guess it was fall of two thousand and three
Wow and Colin. And Colin came to ESPN back then

(41:02):
from Portland, where he hosted his own show. But let's
not act like Portland was a well spring for college
football discussion. The one thing the West Coast does give
you is a longer runway to if you like watching
college football, you can watch all the games in your day,
whereas East Coast it's a little harder for those late
night packed twelve games Sunday night football games as well.
But we've both been huge college football fans, gone to

(41:25):
more games. I've gone to more games than I think
anybody in National Sports Radio and Colorado and coach Prime
held on to get a win last night. It's year
two at CU. So what do we make of it?
I'll say as a coach, now, I can tell you
what my biggest takeaway is. I'll share it with you next.

(41:46):
Doug gotlieb in for Colin. This is the hurt
