They're always fun live in Los Angeles. It's The Herd

or watching. Thanks for making us part of your day.
One hour from now. Where Colin was right a lot
of that, and where Colin was wrong a little bit
(00:46):
of that as well. Matt Hasselback, Michael Urban stop by
the show today. Well, I think the Atlanta Falcons are
out of my hurt hierarchy top ten. I gotta tell
you all of us, you can't overreact. There are some
things you look at and you go, wow, that's troubling,
(01:07):
And then there's a lot of stuff you look at.
These rookie quarterbacks all struggled. You just you got to
understand that they all struggled. But last night, maybe I
feel strongly about this.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
J Mack.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
It may be a preview of the NFC Championship. I
gotta tell you I have two big takes last night.
Number one, Detroit got out played and out coached, and one,
that's okay, that's not Detroit we grew up with. They
are not a one off from last year. They're tough,
they're resilient, they're deep, they're offensive lines the best in football,
(01:38):
and that's a pretty good sign. The Rams dominate the
second half with McVeigh and Stafford and the Lions one
in overtime where the Rams looked exhausted and just ran
out of players. Now the Lions got a little bit
cute for me. This is a power run team. And
you know, I like Jared Goff more than everybody else
I think on the planet, less golf, more running, two
(01:59):
really good backs, one's a star. Offensive line is the
best in football. I would just run NonStop if I
was Detroit and Dan Campbell. So my first take is
Detroit would have not only lost this game in previous decades.
In years they may have gotten blown out. And they won,
and they were outplayed for big chunks of it in
the second half. All the second half except overtime, and
(02:20):
I think they were out coach. Here's my second take.
That's the best loss I've seen in years for any team.
The Rams were missing both their offensive tackles, their best
corner three offensive linemen, no Poka Nakua, down fourteen at
half Sunday Night football in Detroit, and Matt Stafford put
on a clinic. If you that's the best quarterback in
(02:42):
the NFC. That's a top five quarterback in the NFL.
I don't care what list you're doing. He and Cooper
Cup without Poka Nakua, not a lot of time to
throw backups on the offensive line. They went into the
teeth of that defense and just first down, first down,
first down, first down dominated, total play dominated, third down,
dominated time of possession. And they were down several of
(03:05):
their top players. And it got to overtime and they
ran out of bodies, and they ran out of gas,
and Detroit, maybe because they were so fatigue said, guys,
let's not get cute. Let's just run the football over
and over and over. And the Lions this is what
they should be doing. Nine out of ten plays. And
you know, I'm a golf fan. This team is built
to control the clock. What happened in the second half
(03:27):
of Detroit should not happen. Run the ball, eat the clock,
force teams to get physical, because I don't think many can.
So I would not be shocked. This was a great
loss by the Rams. They'll never be this unhealthy. I
would not be shocked if this isn't the NFC Championship.
That's how strongly I feel about it. In fact, I
(03:47):
think the Lions got too cute and the Rams ran
out of people. But it's Week one. Don't overreact. And
here was Dan Campbell, the winning coach.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
After I knew it was going to be a hard
fought game. I did know that because I think this
coach doesn't a hell of a job, you know I do.
I think Sean always puts together a good game plan.
And then in Stafford, man, you know, it's almost like
you don't want to hit him because I think when
you hit him he plays better.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Yeah, Matt Stafford, whatever you think of all the great
quarterbacks in this league, and we can put we can
put Mahomes on a level above everybody else. Then it
gets into the Herberts and Lamars and whoever you want
up there. Half of you want back. Nobody throws a
prettier football, including Mahomes, than Matt Stafford. And for all
(04:39):
you young quarterbacks, this is what it looks like, all
you young quarterbacks. You're missing your tackles, you're best or
second best receivers out, you're on the road, you're down fourteen.
Do you understand that you could put some of the
most talented players in the world in that spot as
a quarterback and they would be in gulf by it.
They'd be overwhelmed by it. On the road one of
(05:01):
the louder stadiums, pass rush everywhere, missing your tackles, three
missing offensive linemen, your top corners are out. And Matt
Stafford put that franchise on his shoulders last night against
a great football team and nearly pulled it out. There
are not five quarterbacks on the planet that can do
what Matt Stafford did last night. That was a clinic.
(05:23):
They just ran out of bodies. Good game, good teams,
all right. So Dak Prescott, you know, Jerry Jones loves this.
Right before the game, Jerry Jones announces Dak has a
new deal. So it's two hundred and thirty million, sixty
million annual average. You know, four years, two hundred forty million.
So two things happened yesterday with the Cowboys that are
(05:45):
very predictable. They paid a lot of money for a
player they drafted. They love to do that. And the
Cowboys looked absolutely brilliant in Week one of the regular season.
Do you know what they did last year? In Week
one of the regular season. They won. They won by
forty points. This is what the Cowboys do. Now, Cleveland's
a mess. The Deshaun Watson contract. I don't know what happened.
(06:06):
He's not the same player. I can't explain it. Thirteen
starts for Cleveland, He's got a seventy eight passer rating
and completing fifty nine percent of his throws. He's not
as athletic. He doesn't see the field. He's not that accurate.
I never loved him as a quarterback. He's bad now,
so I don't know what to say about it. He
changed jerseys. I don't know. It's not working now. He
was missing some offensive lineman. Dallas has a good pass rush.
(06:27):
I'm trying to contextualize all of it. But that contract. Now,
you thought that Russell Wilson Denver deal was a bad one,
but they hit on bow Nicks, So that means they'll
be able to make up on that big salary for
Russell Wilson very quickly in one year. Cleveland's trapped three
years of that, and when you're missing offensive lineman, you
don't want to face the Cowboys because they got a
pass rush. But it was so Dallas, sunny weather, Dak's
(06:52):
got a new contract. The pass rush is humman.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
It just felt like Dallas. And the reason I've oweays
stayed very consistent with my Cowboy predictions is because the
Cowboys stay consistent, they overpay, They win a lot in
the regular season, and inevitably they don't do very well
in January. In fact, what I was really blown away
with was the play calling by Mike McCarthy. It was
(07:19):
such a classic Cowboy quarter. They were getting a great
pass rush, McCarthy and Dak were in rhythm, beautiful sequencing
by the Cowboys, and then they almost butcher it at
the end of the half with a clock. Guy hit
a sixty six yard field goal, but they met a
situationally they messed up their clock the timeout. It just
was so Dallas, big pass rush, play calling in Dak humming,
(07:43):
and they can't quite get situational football right. But I'm
not going to get too worked up over this because
I've seen this movie so many times. I still think
it's a very, very weak running back room. I still
think they're incredibly dependent on CD LAMB. But to Mike
McCarthy's credit, they use CED LAMB. It didn't matter if
it was jet sweeps, bubble screens down the field. To
(08:06):
Mike McCarthy's credit, and he's a good coach, I don't
think he's a great when he's a good one. They
went to ceed LAMB. I don't know if you can
sustain that for seventeen weeks. I think teams with better
corners and a better consistent pass rush could give him trouble.
But the last three years, the Dallas Cowboys, I kid
you not look it up, have won more regular season
games than the San Francisco forty nine ers. Okay, so
(08:29):
I've seen this before, but let's be honest. Here's the
good news. If Dak is your quarterback, you're never in chaos.
If Dak is your quarterback, you're o is viable until
about January fifteenth. If Dak is your quarterback, Jerry Jones
is happy and here is Jerry on the new deal
for DAK.
Speaker 5 (08:49):
I'm happy that it's done. This was a time when
it was right there for us to do. We were
all set to go. And that's so critical. I'm saying
so many things that were worthy of doing that work
done because you missed the time here to make it happen.
(09:09):
And opening day up here against Cleveland, this was a
great time to make it.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
App So if so many things happen in week one
and you can't overreact to it, I mean that's one
of the things you just can't do. You can't overreact
to this stuff. But I will say the Jim Harball
win for the Chargers, and I know that was a
corner TV game for a lot of you. That was impressive.
(09:34):
That was an ugly football game. And I want to
give Jim Harbaugh some credit. On the other side. Did
you have Michael Irvin Matt hasselback today?
Speaker 6 (09:41):
J Mack?
Speaker 1 (09:41):
What was your big interpretation of week Well, obviously, Cincinnati
without their receivers is a water pistol offense. I thought
New England's defense, the physicality of the Patriots was impressive.
I mean they were blowing plays up left and right.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Big picture.
Speaker 7 (09:56):
I'd go back to Friday Night and the Jordan Love injury. Colin,
I know you love.
Speaker 8 (09:59):
The pack You thought super Bowl. I think Pete Trager
said they're going to the super Bowl. Maybe if he's
out a month and it's Malik Willis. Has been reported,
like there's conflicting reports on if they're going to go
after Ryan Tannehill. But if it's Malik Willis, Packers are done.
The season's over. If he's out for a month, there's
just no chance. Yeah, not in that division, in a
pretty stacked NFC.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Yeah, it's I didn't love the Friday game because it
took four great teams were taken off the Sunday schedule
by Thursday and Friday.
Speaker 7 (10:29):
That game was awesome.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Yeah, I was, Yeah, it was. I was watching a
lot of bad quarterback play yesterday and I think we
all should take a deep breath. Young quarterbacks are going
to struggle. What would concern me if you're Tennessee or
you're the New York Giants when you don't have a
rookie quarterback and your guy looks like he can't play
or Carolina could be frightening, like do we have to
redraft the quarterback? Position. But there were some really good
(10:50):
teams that lost. I think the Rams are excellent. I
think the Indianapolis Colts are a really interesting football team.
That was one of your bets, and a lot of
wise guys lot on that. The wise guys lost on
Tennessee and the Colts.
Speaker 7 (11:04):
Well, Colts cover depending on the number you got.
Speaker 8 (11:06):
The Panthers was a was a tough state mentioned Joe
Burrow somehow did escaped criticism here in the first ten
minutes of the show. I'm borderline shocked given how bad
the Bengals look.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
Again, I want to contextualize it. Oh, Jamar Chase t Higgins,
it's ad you just Jamarches. Jamar didn't it was a
corner TV, did he Yeah?
Speaker 8 (11:25):
The kid Gonzales help Hill In the second half, j
Marches couldn't do anything at Burrow looked not Tier one.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
Well again, but remember Bengals are bad week one. Jamar
wasn't at practice figure talking about going up your your
I mean even Jamar Chase mentioned if I played its limitations,
how many snaps to Higgins out Boyd's gone, the three,
Joe Mixon's gone. So you basically took all of the
weapons and you give him Jamar Chase, who's playing limited snaps,
(11:55):
limited service. I mean, I just don't I didn't even care.
Like that was one of those games I didn't care about.
Like the other game, I didn't watch it. I mean,
it's corner game, it's in the corner. TV was Atlanta Pittsburgh.
I know I'm supposed to watch it, but I was like,
I'm not gonna buy Pittsburgh if they win like they did,
so like some games mattered to me. I really wanted
(12:16):
to watch Seattle, Denver and bow Knicks. I really wanted
to see him play. Everybody was banging on him, but
I actually thought he was okay for a rookie on
the road against a great defensive coach and great corners. Okay,
I mean he had a bad pick, but I'm not that.
The Cincinnati thing I don't care about.
Speaker 8 (12:30):
But you don't care that they opened at home, No,
that they the start of the game three and out,
three and out, three and out with a.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Tier one quarterback. If you took my four best producers
off the show, one came back sparingly for a couple
of snaps, We're not going to be great. That's just
the reality of what having running back, star receiver, number two, receiver,
number three receiver.
Speaker 7 (12:51):
They got Chiefs this week when they start ze two
and what they're.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Gonna go, they're gonna be very interesting this.
Speaker 7 (12:57):
They're not beating the Chiefs this week.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
Be sure to catch live edition of The Herd weekdays
and noon Easter nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
You know, we all picked games on a Sunday that
we really want to watch. The Chargers Raiders was really
interesting to me. So the Chargers were one to nine
in their last ten games where they didn't score more
than twenty two, and yesterday twenty two or more. Yesterday
they scored twenty two and they won. And that's Jim Hardball.
(13:27):
He's a little bit like a very successful Hollywood director
where budget runs on time, you know, the production runs
on time. He has a clear style. You know, it's
his movie. And he didn't always have to have movie
stars to win. I mean, I watched that game last year,
this team last year, and they had to score thirty
four to win with a defensive coach. Now they have
(13:49):
an offensive coach, and it was your classic rock fight.
It was just in the alley. They don't have a
lot of weapons on the perimeter. Justin Herbert had to
make two or three big throws. But Herbert now could
execute the offense instead of be the offense every Harbaugh
team every game, I know exactly what I'm getting. Tough,
(14:11):
physical Joe Alt. You know, nobody knew who they were
gonna draft. They're gonna get a receiver. Harbaugh drafts Joe Alt.
The Notre Dame tackle didn't allow a sacker a pressure,
even got matched up against Max Crosby a few times,
no pressures. It was so classic Harball. Beginning with the staff.
He gets a coordinator that likes to run the draft.
(14:34):
He takes size up front. And I watched that game yesterday,
and if it's always function over fashion, if you want
to put up stats, if you want to be the
man that is not Harbaugh, they're very the rookie receiver,
let them in catches. They've got like number two running
backs everywhere. They need another offseason and a draft to
(14:58):
get better offensively. There's some clearly limitations, but the great
Max Crosby lined up across from Joel multiple times, didn't
even have a pressure forget sacks. So they were very
sloppy early. They've got some youth on that offense. But
I thought overall it was just so classic Chargers. It
(15:19):
was say hello to your new Los Angeles Chargers. Less flash,
more finishing, and here was Harbaugh after.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
I thought, it was you lights out, really really great
defense by our guys, and just super super happy about it,
you know, as the whole team. The whole team was inspired.
There are a lot of three an outs in this game.
But you know when we when we needed to not
have a three and out the most and you get
to take the ball. Yeah, ninety two yards and eighty
(15:54):
yards in the second half, and those were those were
you know, game winning drives.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
I mean, it's classic. The Raiders had more first downs,
double the passing first downs, The Raiders were better on
third down, the Raiders threw for more yards, the Raiders
won time of possession, and the Chargers won the game.
That's hardball. Second half. Jim Harbaugh's team, lean forward, run
(16:20):
the football, be physical and punishing, very good situational coach
Antonio Pierce's punting, Jim Harbaugh leaning in, very aggressive. It's
just this is this team could not win games unless
they want to shootout. They bring in an offensive coach
with the same defensive players because their first two picks
(16:44):
were offensive guy, same guys, and they win a game
where they had six passing first downs and eleven total
first downs. That is coaching. That is coaching. The offensive
coach through physicality and culture created with the same dudes
a much better defense. J Mack with the news, No,
(17:07):
no turn on the news.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
This is the herd Line News.
Speaker 8 (17:12):
I saw one of those Charger stats where I think
they had like twenty one first downs and sixteen times
they started with a run like their first play. They
just that's all they want to do, run the football,
and they got a massive offensive line.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Come Chargers. Team's interesting.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
But Joe Ault had a great a great week one.
I know a lot of these young quarterbacks struggled, but
Joe Alt was better than adversis.
Speaker 8 (17:35):
You see that scrum like in the end zone and
Joe Alt comes in and he's like.
Speaker 7 (17:39):
Towering over It was, oh my gosh, like Tregon Williams.
Speaker 8 (17:41):
All right, let's get started with Monday night football, my Jets.
Aaron Rodgers back on the field to face the forty
nine ers, coming off last season's Achilles injury. Rogers spoke
to s n Y about his return as part of
a full sit down for their pregame show that will
air tonight at five Eastern ahead of the game.
Speaker 9 (18:01):
The ups and downs, the highest and lows in between's
appened last year. There'll be a lot of appreciation for
being able to be back on the field. There was,
you know, definitely thoughts in the locker room after I
got hurt that was going to be it. So to
be able to go back on the field will be
a really sweet emotional moment for me. You want to
t out on New York. You go down in history
(18:23):
like very few other places. So there's a lot of
special feels around this organization. It's a proud organization, proud
fan base. Hopefully we can give them, give them a
lot to cheer about.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
I got to tell you, I'm a little nervous. Do
you ever get this feeling in your stomach? Yeah, I
don't want Aaron to get hurting. Oh I know, But
I'm thinking makeshift O line, San Francisco, great pass rush,
taking four snaps in five hundred some days. My whole
take is and I think the Jets are going to
play really well tonight. I think it's a field goal game.
I have the Jets and the points. I think it's
going to be a very competitive game. I think in
(18:58):
two months, I maybe not. But I think right now
the Niners are totally vulnerable. Christian McCaffrey, Trent William's health
or Christian's health, Trent's hold out, I think there. I
think the Niners are about as vulnerable as they're gonna
get right now. I think they'll be fine. But I
do think the Jets defense. I think this game is
a little bit like a much more skilled version of
(19:20):
the Chargers Raiders. A lot of it's played between the thirties,
not a ton of first downs. The defense is going
to kind of control it. Each team will have a
very good opening series, but then defense will win the day.
And I think it's a twenty six to twenty, twenty
four to twenty field of the game.
Speaker 10 (19:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (19:36):
One thing we saw in Week one so far is
these quarterbacks who didn't play in the preseason. They did
not look good at all in Week one, Like almost
across the board, a couple of like Lamar Jackson was
pretty good for the Ravens now but Colin and then
you truss In. Rodgers didn't play last year and his
aide in the Achilli all right there.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
So there's a lot of I mean, there's I'm watching
this game tonight. I don't sit and watch a lot
of pregame shows like I'm just interested in all of
Aaron Rodgers. And there is part of me thinking, just
stay upright, stay on your feet, get rid of the ball,
run the ball. Listen. The league is better when Aaron's playing.
I'm sorry, it's a better leak. He's he's a guy
(20:14):
that gives us content. So the Jets last year unwatchable
and they won seven games. So and I think after
watching Buffalo's defense and Miami's offense was hit and miss,
I think the division's wide open. New England's probably a
little better than we thought. I wouldn't take much from
week one on Cincinnati New England.
Speaker 8 (20:32):
I took a flyer on the first half, under thinking
it's going to be, you know, slow staring out.
Speaker 7 (20:36):
Yeah, twenty one and a half.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
Yeah, I think so, I do too. I think it's
a I think it's just a really physical, fun football game.
We've been very lucky. The standalone game so far had
been Kansas City Baltimore, unbelievable, Philadelphia, Green Bay, Wild, Rams,
Lions overtime, these standalone games when seeds, well, it's also
(20:58):
you can just dive into it. Nothing against the red zone.
But like yesterday at one o'clock, I wanted to watch
Bears Titans. Not saying against the rest of you teams,
but I didn't care. Okay, I wanted Bears Titans every snap.
How was that, well, it was you know what it was.
I learned a lot. Oh really, but I don't think
it was artistic football.
Speaker 8 (21:16):
Yeah, I think I would agree. Next up is the
Miami Dolphins. They got a lucky and that's sorry Dolphins fans.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
There was luck.
Speaker 8 (21:23):
Okay, they got a lucky went over the Jags. But
what happened before the game was the big story. Tyreek
Hill was detained by police on his way to hard
Rock Stadium. You know, the police kind of went a
little overboard and there was a verbal altercation. Here's Tyreek
Hill afterward on what went down.
Speaker 10 (21:42):
Right now, I'm still trying to put it all together.
So I'm not going to give you a version that
I still don't know what happened. I don't want to
bring it racing to it, but sometimes gets kind of
iffy when you do you feel me? So what if
I wasn't Tyreek Hill, Laura knows, like what the guy
or guys would have did you feel me? I'm just
(22:03):
glad that my teammates were there to support me in
that situation because I failed alone, you know, and when
they showed up, it made like it made me realize
that we got a good team this ship though, for
them to like put the for them to put their
their life on the line, you know what I'm saying.
So it was amazing to see.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
Man.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
Yeah, weird, weird situation.
Speaker 8 (22:24):
Yeah, according to a reporter, was there, Uh, Tyreek has
been cited for careless driving. I don't even know what
that is, and a seat belt violation, yet somehow would escalated.
Speaker 7 (22:35):
To get on the ground of belt violation.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
I don't you got you gotta do sorry, law enforcement
gotta do better than that.
Speaker 8 (22:42):
It's a good thing, you know. Samaritans out here were
videotaping the thing because this it looks like something bad
went down. If you're looking at the screen like it's like,
oh my gosh, what happened, It's like, oh, he wasn't
wearing a seatbelt.
Speaker 7 (22:51):
And careless drive. I don't no good anyway.
Speaker 8 (22:53):
Tyreek had a pretty good game eighty yard touchdown receumption
that kind of flipped it.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
And Jaylen Waddle also had a big good game that
took them a while. And by the way, I think this,
I think this that pregame situation. I think it's hard
for teams wrestle with that stuff. I think this team's
gonna be really good. I thought they were really sluggish early.
By the way, there was a play by Holland the safety,
Oh the punch the peanut p that is one of
(23:18):
the players of yesterday. Maybe the best defensive play all
day was by a safety. He came out Jacksonville was
going to score. He punched the ball out at the one,
Miami recovers and takes entire momentum from the game. Nobody's
gonna talk about that play because it's all fantasy and offense. No,
that is the defensive play of the weekend by Holland.
Speaker 8 (23:40):
So jack drew up seventeen to seven et ends at
the one to go up, game's over with like seventeen
minutes left in the game.
Speaker 1 (23:46):
He punches it out. Dolphins recover used that.
Speaker 7 (23:49):
Next play with the Tyreek hill Ady R touchdown. It
was like bing bang, and then.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
I hopefully just understand that that should be something coaches
use on film. That's the punch out tackle. That was
the forget all the other stuff. That was the game
for Miami. That play by Holland.
Speaker 8 (24:05):
What's the kid Charles Peanut Tillman. No, he was a
legend at that one who not started it, but he
was well known.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
I mean, that's just they love. They're down twenty four
to seven without that play over, Yeah, game over.
Speaker 7 (24:16):
I don't know what to do with the Jags.
Speaker 8 (24:18):
Cun Trevor Lawrence was like completed three passes in the
second half.
Speaker 7 (24:22):
For like twenty seven yards.
Speaker 8 (24:23):
I like, the Jags look pretty good and then to
lose that game, I don't really know.
Speaker 1 (24:28):
My take is Houston is going to win that division
for a decade. I am so blown away by c J. Stroud. Stroud, yeah,
and by Anthony Richardson is such an insane athlete. Watching
c J. Stroud play quarterback, It's literally I feel bad
if you have a young quarterback and you watch c J. Stroud.
(24:49):
He makes everything look so effortless. It's a little bit
like Herbert you put him back there one thousand and one,
one thousand and two, and the ball is always delivered accurately. Always.
Speaker 8 (25:00):
The final story is Josh Allen had a big day
for Buffalo.
Speaker 7 (25:04):
Buffalo is in.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
Trouble early, they were, they were bad early.
Speaker 8 (25:08):
Josh Allen bailed him out though a monster game. Two
hundred and seventy one total yards, four touchdowns. He had
too rushing, two passing. He really put the team on
his back. You know, I mean, you don't want to
think MVP after one. Here's my question, Colin. He was
he's the whole offense again.
Speaker 7 (25:23):
Well that is a problem.
Speaker 1 (25:24):
So Harbaugh gets through the Chargers immediately. He takes the
burden off.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
Herbert.
Speaker 7 (25:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:34):
How many years I'm watching them and I'm like, I'm
watching camp I'm watching all the weapons Philadelphia has and
the Niners have and the Detroit and the Rams. Are
we just going to be the Josh Allen centric show again?
Is that all the offense is? That's it?
Speaker 2 (25:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (25:50):
Not sustainable.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
It's like the layered at all. It's like, I like cook,
but it's just Josh Allen is Superman. Put a cape
on it.
Speaker 7 (25:56):
But who are you more concerned for? Remember Lamar Thursday.
Speaker 1 (25:59):
We both the greed ran win. But he's got he's
got excellent weapons, Andrews That receiving corps is the best
he's had in years. Flowers, I feel like I just
watched it and I'm like, yeah, Josh Allen's great. Okay,
I know that's been established.
Speaker 7 (26:14):
Yeah is mac collan.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
I think they could go out and get a receiver
at the trade deadline. I really do. If I was them,
I would look at the Raiders and DeVante Adams. You
gotta give this team has to have a second gear
beyond Josh Allen.
Speaker 11 (26:27):
Huh.
Speaker 7 (26:28):
Yeah, Listen.
Speaker 8 (26:30):
I don't think the long term this is gonna work,
But I think Alan could win the MVP if he's
doing this stuff.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
But he cares its football. We don't care about MVP.
Speaker 8 (26:36):
But he's He's always been like the second banana to Mahomes,
you know.
Speaker 1 (26:39):
But we know he's a great player.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
We all know that.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
I just don't I think the organization it's a little
bit like Cam and Carolina.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:48):
The reason Cam aged so fast it was like they
didn't get him enough good players and playmakers so they
could pull back on his constant domination of the offense
by the.
Speaker 7 (26:57):
Way the Buffalo defense was torched by Kyler. Kyler Murray
looked good for the second half. I don't know what
the hell happened to him.
Speaker 1 (27:03):
I mean, come on, you bang on Kyler Murray NonStop.
Speaker 8 (27:06):
He was good his little feet around yesterday.
Speaker 1 (27:10):
No, he is that. First of all, Bill's Arizona was
one of the most That was one of the best
games to watch.
Speaker 8 (27:16):
I think it was the first kickoff return and the
new rules.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
Yes, was by j Dallas.
Speaker 8 (27:22):
Here's the thing if you if you don't get the
kick into the end zone, the returner has such a runway.
There's only one line of people right and they're all
way back, and it was like, oh Jesus, is there's
something there.
Speaker 1 (27:32):
DJ Dallas was like the number three running back with
the Seahawks, right, and I'm watching him and I'm like,
he's a kick returner. Boom gone. That wildly entertaining.
Speaker 7 (27:41):
Good game, certainly.
Speaker 2 (27:43):
J McK with the news, Well that's the news, and
thanks for stopping by the herd line news.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
Well, so I sat and I watched every snap, maybe
regrettably of the Bears Titans. It was there was no offense.
It was all defense and special teams. Here's the good
news for Chicago. You won a game that in the
history or franchise you would normally lose. I mean you
would do what Tennessee would do. You'd outplay somebody and lose.
You got out played and won. That never happens in Chicago.
(28:13):
So but that's about it for the good news. Here's
two things I worry about with the Bears. Caleb Williams
has got to get more accurate. Three times last year
at Southern California, he completed under fifty eight percent of
his throws. He only completed fifty percent of his throws
in the preseason, and he completed yesterday forty eight percent.
He's got to get more accurate quick, all right, like
(28:37):
that period. And what concerns me he doesn't have a
McVeigh or a Shanahan or a Sean Payton or Nanny
Reid to smooth out the rough edges. He just doesn't.
So Chicago averaged two point eight yards of play yesterday.
That was worse than the league. And Tennessee's defense is good,
it's not that good. So listen, I get it. All
the young quarterbacks struggled, but I thought Boennix was better.
(28:59):
Than everybody thinks. But I get it. And I also
get that Gino Smith was good and Derek Carr was
good and sam Donold was good in Baker Mayfield was
good and time on task matters a lot in this league.
And I picked Tennessee to win this game. During the
Blazing five, Friday, I said this is going to be
much more turbulent. And I also pointed out Friday, I said,
his accuracy is erratic. It was in college, it was
(29:22):
in the preseason. But the difference is is when Mahomes
was erratic, he had read and by the way, Russell
Wilson last year where Sean Payton had his best year
in two years, and bow Nicks was accurate yesterday. This
is a defensive culture. It's a defensive head coach. Does
he have a strong offensive coordinator to sandpaper the edges?
(29:43):
Because the accuracy, which was in fairness, all the people
I talked to about Caleb, that was the concern. Leadership's
good athletic abilities, good size, power, arm, all that stuff.
But I wonder, now, it's not like Will Levis bad
where you don't even know if he can play in
this league. Like I think Will Levis is too mechanical.
(30:03):
I don't think he's fluid enough. I don't think it works.
Daniel Jones not talented enough. Bryce Young just doesn't look
strong and accurate enough. I don't think it's that situation
where you're watching and you're wondering, Man, that just doesn't
work at all, That may never work. But yesterday the Bears,
they got too many offensive weapons to have a forty
two passer rating on third down. That's bad. And again
(30:28):
I said it was going to be turbulent, and I
picked the Titans to win this game. But I didn't
think the oxygen masks would have to drop and the
stewardesses would be screaming in tear. They barely landed the plane,
and they got kind of lucky to land the plane
because if will Levis didn't make arguably the worst quarterback
decision I've ever seen in my life, they lose this
(30:49):
game and are anemic offensively. So again it's all these
young guys struggle. But I had said this months ago
in the draft. Jayden Daniels has a defensive coach, and
Caleb Williams has a defensive coach. Michael Pennix has a
defensive coach. Bow Knicks has an offensive coach, and I
(31:09):
thought bow Knicks yesterday had a bad pick, wasn't great,
But I do think it matters because all these guys
are hitting that ball in the rough? How do you
get it? Even Mahomes early was amazing, but his mechanics
would go sideways. He would be reckless and sloppy, and
he would get him back in the fairway. And here
was Caleb Williams on his debut.
Speaker 6 (31:30):
I sat down and enjoyed the moment, just watching all
the guys celebrate. Understand that I need to be better.
Will be better, whether it's a win or loss. You know,
you you expect yourself to play a certain way. You
expect yourself to go out there and perform a certain
way that didn't happen today, And so you know, it's
enough motivation for me. You know we're going to you know,
somebody else's home this week too, and so you know
(31:52):
it's it's enough motivation for me to go out there,
get better this week and make sure that you know
I performed differently next week.
Speaker 1 (31:59):
Okay, now it gets much tougher. They go from Will
Levis and at Home to CJ. Stroud at Houston Sunday night.
So that's a big primetime game this schedule. Now that
gets interesting for the next couple of weeks. So again,
(32:20):
we knew the flight was going to be bumpy. I
said before, I worry about the culture, not Caleb. How
do you sandpaper this stuff? Cause you can't have a
forty two passer rating on third down with those weapons
at home on a perfect weather day. Here comes the
bad weather. In six weeks, here come the great defenses.
(32:41):
Here Sunday night at Houston is going to be a
totally different environment. In fact, I like the Texans big
in that game.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays

Speaker 7 (33:43):
Check for the game in your area.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
Well, yesterday was reclamation Day in the NFL for quarterbacks.
Derek Carr crushed it. So did Sam Darnold. Baker Mayfield
four touchdown passes. Geno Smith scrambled for a touchdown and
one proves how valuable snaps experienced time on task is
(34:05):
at quarterbacks. And it also proves how important the fit is.
That's the best I've ever seen Derek Carr play. He's
got a new offensive coordinator. He looked fantastic. Sam Darnold
went twelve for twelve at one point. That's as good
as I've ever seen Sam Darnold play. He's got a
great offensive coach, left tackle and wide receiver. Baker Mayfield
was scrambling and dealing in playmaking. And I've said this before,
(34:28):
I just don't think it's healthy to root against people.
I was tough on Baker. I think I was right,
But I think he's a good guy. He's got a
great marriage, a great wife. I'm genuinely happy for people
in life who love something, are crazy, passionate about something,
and they eventually get the right fit. Derek Carr, that's
(34:48):
as good as he can play. He's got a new
offensive coordinator and Baker Mayfield. Finally the expectations have come down.
He's playing with house money. He's got one hundred million
net worth. He's happy be and Baker looks like he's
playing happy. He's confident, Baker and supported, supported Sam Darnold
and new OC Derek Carr. Dudes can play. So once
(35:11):
you take the expectations off of these young quarterbacks and
give them better fits and better teams and better cultures,
I mean, Gino went from the messy Jets to a
well run franchise with one of the best gms in
the league, the Seahawks and John Snyder, and so it's like,
it's just good these guys care reclamation day. Here's Baker
(35:34):
Mayfield after it with our Laura Oakman, just having fun.
Speaker 13 (35:38):
I mean, yes, it's our job. At football is a
game and just finding a joy in it. I play
my best when I'm having fun, and this is this
group allows me to do that, and everybody in the building.
So I'm so thankful for them, And like I said,
keep building and keep going.
Speaker 1 (35:52):
You know, I think quarter even John Elway didn't win
at the highest level until he got a Shanahan. This
league is much more situational on quarterback than anybody wants
to admit. It's much more fun to say this superstar
can carry a franchise. Brady doesn't have all those trophies
without Belichick because the Great Brady didn't develop for years
(36:14):
and years and years. And Derek Carr yesterday now it
was Carolina. That's as loose. That's as much as Derek
Carr's ever thrown the ball down the field. Sam Donald
twelve for twelve. Look at that throw, I mean Sam Donald,
passer rating over one hundred. Baker looked like the MVP
of the league. So this stuff matters. Fit situations matter,
(36:38):
and four guys proved it this weekend. So I'm gonna
push back on a lot of the narratives. I actually thought.
I actually thought that bo Nicks was okay it's at Seattle.
They have excellent corners. It's one of the loudest places
to play. And Bonnicks, now the passer rating will tell you, uh,
(36:58):
passer rating is like forty seven. They asked him to
throw forty two times. He had a stinker of a pick,
but I don't think it was his ugly as stat say,
none of these other rookies are having to throw at
forty two times run for their life. Denver didn't have
a great o line. Seahawks had a pass rush. One
of the smartest young defensive coordinators. Bow Knicks was accurate.
(37:21):
Bo Nicks was mobile. If Seattle doesn't get that first
down on that great catch by Tyler Lockett on third
down and six, if they don't get that, bo Nicks
gets the ball back with a chance to win. I mean,
this was one of the games we all J McK
and I agreed with like this is a terrible spot
for bow Nicks. I thought the game planned by Sean
(37:42):
was conservative. It was underneath passes, but that's what he
should be throwing on the road against great corners. Take
what they give you. Here was Sean Payton after he.
Speaker 2 (37:53):
Seemed calm, poised. I thought that part of it, you
know he was. I think, yeah, I felt like he
was very comfortable and ready.
Speaker 1 (38:00):
Again, nobody plays great for four quarters. Outside of Dak yesterday,
you don't get a lot of that. Mahomes has had
bad Super Bowls for the first three quarters. But considering
contextualizing what he had to do in the place he
had to do it, and how many passes he threw,
I know, the passer rating will tell you he was awful.
I didn't think he was. I thought I think he's
(38:22):
much more mobile than people think. He's always been accurate.
I thought he was composed. I didn't think he looked nervous.
Seattle's got elite corners. They're one of five teams in
the league with great corners. There's not a lot of them,
and Mike McDonald is supposed to be I mean, here's
the funny thing. Seattle's got a better roster. So does
Seattle fans feel better today with the future with Gino
(38:44):
or Denver fans with bow Knicks. Now, Seattle's got better players.
Seattle's got much better players, in my opinion than most
people think. I like both their backs, I like their receivers,
I like their tight end their offensive tackles are good,
but the old line is still a work in progress.
But I don't know watching bo Nicks, that's one of
the games I really wanted to watch. I don't care
what the quarterback rating says. For the situation he was in.
(39:07):
It wasn't terrible. Like Jayden Daniels could move a little bit.
He looked uncomfortable with the pocket. Caleb looked uncomfortable. Bryce
Young looks shot, Will Levice not working. Daniel Jones, I
don't want to get into it. I was like, forty
two throws on the road, gets those corners a pass rush,
not terrible. If Lockett doesn't make one of the catches
of the weekend on that third and six, a one hander,
(39:30):
Denver's got the ball with a chance to win, I
don't know. Feels pretty good for me. Colin Wright, Colin
Wrong top of next hour. The Steelers won, So one
of our producers is a Bengals fan. I didn't really
watch that game. That was just a corner game for me.
I just I'm not going to be able to stomach
a lot of the Patriots offense. There are games in
Week one that I just I eliminate that one. I
(39:51):
just take the Cincinnati New England one off the board.
I kind of felt like that Pittsburgh Atlanta. I'm like,
I'm not gonna watch they. Pittsburgh's just only one way
to win field goals. The quarterback situations of mess. There
were just some games. But then I watch a game
like Detroit in LA, and I'm like, I don't care
the Rams lost. When that team gets healthy, that team's
(40:12):
gonna be good. So there are you know, Kansas City, Baltimore.
I buy that game. Philadelphia, Green Bay, I buy what
I see, Detroit, LA. I buy what I see, Chicago Tennessee.
Unfortunately for both teams, I buy what I see. That
was so ugly, and I watched every snap and it
was unwatchable. But I wanted to go a mile deep
(40:33):
on the Titans and the Bears, and a mile deep
I was hour two next
