All right, it is a Wednesday midweek ready to roll

be and however you may be listening or watching. Thanks
for making us part of your day, jamac A lot
of things going on today. Danny Parkins checks in later
this hour on the Chicago Bears. I know they won.
(00:46):
It was ugly. I think they're getting blown out in Houston.
Joel Platt. Next hour, Mark Sanchez stops by. I was
sitting there last night and they had no games. Last time.
I watch a little debate.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Oh no, you didn't.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Yes, I don't ever debate against the former prosecutor. That's
all I'm gonna say. Don't do that. So I was
thinking about this about a lot of people are afraid
of being alone, and to me, there's always been a
big difference between lonely that's not great and being alone.
(01:24):
I'm alone all the time and I like it. So
Minnesota Sam Darnold was great, but so is their defense.
And Jonathan Grenard was talking about Giants quarterback Daniel Jones
two picks, fifty percent completions, horrible passer rating at forty
four point three, and he said we felt bad for him.
(01:45):
The Vikings defense guys like we felt bad for him.
And I would rather have no quarterback for a year
and be seeking one than have an overcompensated quarterback and
be stuck and trapped. I have I've said this before.
I am claustrophobic professionally and personally. I don't like being trapped.
(02:07):
I don't like being trapped. A lot of people don't
like to be alone, and they stand bad relationships. I'd
rather you know, I'm lucky, but if he gave me
the choice of hanging out by myself and in my
thoughts or in a loveless relationship, it's real easy for me.
And I think what happens when you're alone and when
you try new things and move across the country and
(02:29):
take a new job and you don't know how it's
going to pan out. What you're saying is you don't
trust yourself. Let's be honest about it. You don't trust yourself.
The New York Giants don't trust themselves. Mara, John Mara
doesn't trust his GM that's what he's saying. Going with
(02:50):
Daniel Jones. That or he doesn't understand what good quarterback
play is and I don't believe that. The lesson today
is don't fear the unknown. The unknown is exciting and fun.
I've said every job I've ever taken I wasn't ready for.
That's the fun of it. I had a friend years
ago she took a job at Google. She said she
was lost for six months. I was like, yeah, that's
(03:14):
that's the great part. But deep down, you trusted yourself.
The Giants don't trust themselves. Daniel Jones since he signed
the contract, has a sixty five passer rating. He's one
and six. He's awful, and they're still arguing when you
have no quarterback, there's absolute clarity. Oh, we're all getting
fired unless we get this right. That's an amazing place
(03:38):
to be the only place better to be in the
NFL is we got Patrick Malmes, we got Matt Stafford,
we got Josh Allen. We got Lamar Jackson, we got
Justin Herbert, we got Jalen Hurts, we got Dak That's
the best place you want to be is having the guy.
The second best place is we don't have him. We
can get fired. It's on us. That's like being single,
(04:00):
a bad quarterback, over compensated quarterback. Cleveland, the New York Giants,
what an awful place to be. Give New England credit
three years of Mac Jones. He got him to the playoffs,
and they're like, now we don't think he's good enough
and we don't think he's the right guy or leader.
See you, Russell Wilson, Sean Payton. Russell wasn't the problem
(04:22):
last year. It was Denver's defense. Sean Payton's like, yeah,
it's not gonna work long term. Boom, and they got
their guy. San Francisco. Garoppolo gets to a Super Bowl saying,
I know, but there's certain things he can't do. We're
gonna move off him. Trey Lands, Yeah, we're gonna move
off that too. The offensive coach is goff to Stafford.
(04:44):
The offensive coaches in this league trust themselves, but a
lot of the owners don't trust their gms. A lot
of the gms don't trust their scouts. If you're basically
in a Cleveland relationship, now get out of Deshaun Wallson's contract,
deal with it, Go find the next guy. It's a mess.
(05:05):
Go look at the great offensive coaches. They're not afraid
to be alone. They're not afraid to not have the guy.
I mean, it's just like if you're in a six
year relationship with somebody, your six years your relationship, and
a friend asks you you think he's the one or
she's the one, and your answer is, well, I really
(05:29):
like her, dad. I mean, we just leased a car,
we have a dog together. Time to draft a new
boyfriend or girlfriend, Time to get a new quarterback. That's
not the answer. Fear is clarity. No quarterback is clarity.
(05:51):
Everybody in the building knows. Get it right or we're
all fired. Bet on yourself. The giants are afraid to
do that. Speaking of New York, you know, yesterday I
thought to myself, boy was I pessimistic? Boy was I negative?
And that's not who I am. I am known in
(06:12):
this building is glass half full. Colin, And I thought,
there's got to be another way to look at the Jets,
and then Robert saw their coach, said this yesterday.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
Unfortunately it does because I think I know we're going
to get the defense fixed. That is not a problem.
That's a problem. It's not a problem. And I know
we're going to get a lot better from week one
to week two. We got a great opportunity this week
against Tennessee on a short week.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
And so I thought this morning, how about five positive
things about the Jets? And there are five. Number one,
San Francisco is a tough opener. I mean, outside of
Andy Reid, is there another coach in the league that
you wouldn't want to face in week one? And Kyle's
Shanahan with five months to prepare, and we thought Christian
McCaffrey out Trent Williams holdout would soften things up. No,
(07:07):
not really. San Francisco was a brutal opener. How about
number two? The Jets O line didn't rank highly on PFF,
but it held up pretty well. Bosa didn't get a sack.
I didn't think their O line was a problem. I
thought it was fine. I didn't think it was dominating
like the Lion's O line and overtime, but I thought
it was fine, and the Niners have a better than
(07:28):
average front seven. How about number three? This loss and
the way it happened should propel the owner to get
out the checkbook and sign Hassan Reddick like they needed
a more consistent pass rush Brockporty had too much time.
How about number four? Aaron Rodgers is not as athletic
(07:48):
as he once was, but he still throws a beautiful ball.
When he had time to throw, it comes out like Marino.
It's beautiful. He was the fourth highest graded passer week one.
I'd like to du lean note that Sam Darnold was
number two, but Aaron was four, and it looked pretty.
He always looks pretty. He's gonna get more comfortable. I
(08:09):
mean he's not very good in week one anyway. He's
like one in four in his last five week ones.
He's kind of distracted in the offseason, does his own thing.
So Aaron's never been great in recent years. Once he
got paid the big money, he does his own thing
in the summer. I'm okay with that. Burrow's not good
in week one either. I think he's great. And number
five is getting blown out in week one is not
(08:30):
gloom and doom. The last four years, a team that
got blown out in Week one made the playoffs. I
mean Kansas City didn't get blown out, but Kansas City
lost Week one at home last year to Detroit and
then won the Super Bowl. So Julian Edelman yesterday on
our show said, let's just pump the brakes on the
doom and gloom for New York.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
They played the defending NFC championship team against the forty
nine Ers, a team that has continuity, that's played with
each other for multiple years. Now, we can't just expect
the Jets, who were a seven win seat seven win
team last year, to go out there and compete with
like one of the best teams in the league. And
(09:12):
Aaron Rodgers he's smart enough to learn what he has
to do to be productive. That was his first game
with live action bullets. So like, I'm pumping the brakes
on the whole thing.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
Yeah, I feel better about myself today. I don't want
to be like negative guy spraying the negative aerosol over
the crop Week one. That's not who I am. Did
I mention that Sam Darnold had the second highest passer
rating that may have slipped by I just want to
make sure everybody realizes Sam Darnald was the second highest
(09:46):
readed passer. There's a lot of positive vibes. By the way,
the Viking schedule gets much tougher, the Jets schedule gets
much easier. So I do think right now, if I
had to make my two favorite bets of week two,
one of them is Jets at Tennessee minus four. I
think the defense will play with its tear on fire.
(10:06):
It was completely embarrassed. Robert Salah confidently said that's not
going to be the problem. Will Levis is not going
to succeed. Jets win comfortably in Week two. Vikings, meanwhile,
schedule gets much more difficult in the next four to
five weeks. Probably pull back a bit. So j Mack,
there it is yesterday. As I saw you leaving the building,
(10:28):
I saw a shadow cast over you, a pall over you,
and I wanted to lift you up because I just
not how we want to start the season with negativity.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Fine, it's an l we took it. We're on to Tennessee.
We're moving on.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
Not a big deal.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
I think you're overblowing it a little bit.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
I think the.
Speaker 6 (10:44):
Jets, you know, didn't look great against a juggernaut, as
Edelman said, but can I go back to the Vikings
forty nine ers real.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Quick for a second. Yeah, did they play last year?
Speaker 1 (10:54):
They did?
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Who won that game?
Speaker 1 (10:55):
Wasn't it close?
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Vikings one? They don't see why we're discounting Minnesota in
this spot.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
No, No, I'm not. I tend to think Sean Payton
has said this. You know, there's certain times you can
really coach your team hard. I think Sala the advantage
to getting kind of humiliated in Week one, especially when
you do have talent. Carolina got humiliated. They may not
have the players, they probably don't, but New York has
the players and got humiliated. So professional athletes like to
(11:24):
be coached. And Robert Sala is going to come in hard,
and he's going to come in really loud and really intense.
And I think New York a lot of their best
players have been in this league for four or five years.
Sum are young, but CJ. Mosley, Aaron Rodgers, Quinnin and Williams.
These guys been around the block of Mike Williams, guys
Tyron Smith. They can be coached hard. I think Robert's
(11:45):
going to put it on pretty loud and intense and
heavy this week, and I think they'll respond. And I
think the one team in the league that won and
had no business winning was Tennessee. So the line should
be six to seven. It's four because they want If
you watch the game, and I watched every snap, Tennessee
gave the game away. I mean, Chicago had sixty four
(12:06):
yards passing, Tennessee had a seventeen nothing lead. They controlled
the football game. So Tennessee really lost, but gets a
w Jets with real talent are humiliated.
Speaker 6 (12:17):
You mean the inverse Tennessee basically you think won but
they lost the games.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but they won the game, and so
they probably feel much better about themselves in the betting
markets like Tennessee Tennessee. Tennessee is potentially awful.
Speaker 6 (12:35):
I would largely agree with They're not Carolina bad, but
they've got major holes in the Will Levis stuff with
the coach coming out and saying, yeah, we could have
just punted on every first time.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
I mean, when the coach set we would have been
better off punting than giving Will Levis the ball. How
does that play in the locker room When a coach
says that, players hear that and Salah.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Hey, guys, you got pushed around, you got bullied by
the Niners. How do you feel about that?
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Different fire.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in noon Easter nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
So I was just reading a little tweet from somebody
inside the building, Michael mulva Hill, who does all our
stats and ratings. He's a lot of information. Big ten ratings.
Last week, viewing time was up one hundred and forty
eight percent. We kept telling you I grew up with
(13:29):
the Pac twelve, this Big ten. Now with USC and Oregon, Washington, UCLA,
with Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State's big time. It's hard
to turn the TV off. And for years I've called
Iowa the fake ID of college football. They'd win eight
or nine games, argue they should be in a major
(13:51):
Bowl of the playoff because they beat up on directional
schools out of conference, maybe Perdue, and then they'd go
get shelled against the big boy. But you can only
have a fake ID for so long. At some point
you're twenty one and can drink legally, So I'm you know,
it's time for a new fake ID of college football.
You know somebody that is new on campus, talking a
(14:14):
big game, little thirsty and not of legal age, kind
of a poser, and I think it's Colorado. Deon Sanders
is the new fake ID of college football. I'm sorry.
A lot of talk, a lot of hat, no cattle.
I mean, at least Iowa could hold their liquor. These
(14:35):
guys are vomiting on themselves after a margarita. It's bad.
They've lost seven straight games to FBS teams, worst run
offense in America, can't defend the run, can't play defense,
tackle poorly. I mean, at least Iowa wore a collared
shirt and sort of played the part. Maybe they can
(14:56):
match up with Michigan. Colorado can't even compete. They have
the worst rushing offense in college football, and nobody talks
more trash. A lot of stories about what they're playing
over the loudspeakers. I don't care about those, but it
feels like they're one big campaign to get Shader Sanders
the Heisman or the number one pick. It's just a
timeshare sales pitch and I'm over it. And let's be honest.
(15:20):
Iowa graduated college. They got a good job at a
local accounting firm. They're doing fine with their life. Colorado
is a mess. They're on academic probation and they're bragging
about skipping class on Wednesday. The new fake id of
college football is Colorado All hat, no cattle. Dion though, says,
(15:42):
we're just fine.
Speaker 7 (15:45):
I feel like we got the right guys. You may
see shake something up a little bit, Phil a little
old is a wonderful offensive line. Coach Pat does a
tremendous job and called in place as he did the
first game. So you just can't take a snapshot of
one game and not understand the first game we have.
We'll try one yards off fans. I hear all these questions,
but I understand it comes with the territory. When you lose,
(16:07):
you're going to be ridicule. You're going to be prosecuted
and persecuted. I'm good.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
I am comfortable with a new fake idea of college football.
And I will say this, Iowa fans may have been
at patient times and want bigger ball games, but they
were humble. Could Colorado scale back a little on the
trash talk, just just a little on the ad campaign
(16:35):
get through at least two margarita's before you throw up
on yourself at Senior Froggies in Boulder. Jmack with a
news no, no, no, turn on the news.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
This is the Herdline news.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Wednesday off to a fiery start, just lobbing grenade that.
Speaker 6 (16:53):
Was like a Molotov cocktail into the Colorado training room.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
Holy cow, All right, let's go.
Speaker 6 (16:58):
To The Niners took down the Jets on Monday without
Christian McCaffrey. Jordan Mason showed out Book forty seven on
the ground. Well, we you know, week two right around
the corner. Short week for the Niners, and Christian McCaffrey
is a long shot to play. According to Ian Rappaport,
Here's Kyle Shanahan with the latest.
Speaker 8 (17:16):
Definitely, I believe that it was playoff game, he would
have played. You know, it's not just the cap, it's
the achilles, and you know, the achilles is tendonitis and
that stuff comes and goes, and when it is acting up,
somebody got to be very careful about. Christian's very diligent
about that stuff.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
And if it was a.
Speaker 8 (17:33):
Playoff game, you know, he made it very clear to
me he believed he could go but when you hear
that type of stuff and it's not a playoff game
and it's Week one, and especially when you're dealing with
the lower extremities like that, it was a tough decision.
Speaker 1 (17:47):
But hearing all the words and stuff and the long
run and made it easy. Yeah, I would not play him.
I wouldn't care if he didn't play until October twentieth.
Just this kid behind him is Jordan Mason, the ORGA
tech undrafted guy in that offensive scheme. Shanahan's history, his
dad's the same white. They made a lot of thousand
yard rushers off of middle and lower draft picks. Like
(18:09):
I wouldn't play McCaffrey. And the other thing is you're
trying to break in eventually all these new wide receivers.
They have another young tight end. I would get everybody
else up to speed.
Speaker 6 (18:20):
So I pointed this out. I believe you were on
one of your many vacation days when Christian McCaffrey had
his most touches ever with the Panthers. He had two
hundred and eighty seven carries and a bunch of catches.
The next season, he played three games because of injuries.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Well, what happened last season Christian McCaffrey two hundred and
seventy two rushes a billion receptions and it's like, already
out of the gate. He's hurt, like smaller running back.
He's an awesome.
Speaker 6 (18:46):
Talent that's undeniable, but you just cannot give him the
ball that many times and expect his body to hold up.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
I would rather he's ready for the opener in division
against the Rams. As something else to point out about
this game, Euro was good at this open with the
Jets division rival Rams. That Vikings is a classic sandwich
game where you think you're feeling pretty good about yourself.
Watch Minnesota play. And by the way, Minnesota schedules tough.
(19:15):
They can't take any weeks off. They're looking up at
everybody they play. The Giants was their one breather, so
I think they're in. This is a tough sled for
the Niners. And I agree with you. Years ago and
I remember reading this, I must have read this ten
years ago. It was the White Sox won a World Series.
They had been twenty years ago, nineteen ninety one. They
won the world Say what white year was it? The
(19:35):
White Sox won the World's Series? And I remember reading
an article whatever year that was, and it was and
I was reading an article about a decade ago, and
they were talking about that White Sox pitching staff and
they were talking I'd never heard this before, but they
were talking about arm fatigue for teams that go into
the playoff. It was in two thousand and five that
White Sox won, Okay, And then the years later somebody
wrote an article about arm fatigue. It may have been
(19:57):
Verducci or somebody, one of the great baseball guys Buffer,
only Tim Kirchin, whatever it is, And they were writing
about arm fatigue, and they were talking about when you
ask your staff to go in these high leverage pitching situations,
don't be shocked. If they really struggle, you're better served
to like get them on the ir don't worry about
him till like June. And I feel like McCaffrey and
(20:20):
running backs, especially smaller running backs who initiate contact, there's
an argument they're better served not playing McCaffrey till October
and just getting you out from a seventeen game schedule
to thirteen.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
What if you just played him a little and he
limited to like fifteen carries, It's.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
Very hard to play him a little. I'll tell you why.
I'll tell you why because you get him the ball
three times and he picks up nine yards of carry
and you get addicted to Christian McCaffrey.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
And then a dump ball goes for twenty five yards.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
I mean, it's just like saying, hey, I just want
a little ice cream and you're sitting there at nine
at night and you go in the fridge and take
a bite. I'm gonna put it away.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
No you're not.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
You'll eat the pint that's up. McCaffrey's so great that
when you get a little sam, you're gonna use him.
He's an automatic first down. And so I just I
think the smartest teams in this league tend to be
a little ahead on analytics. I think there's an argument
for the top the biggest running backs in this league.
(21:16):
I mean the guys, they were big carry guys September
if they had a playoff run. Additionally, bring them in slowly.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
Let me ask about Saquon Barkley. Was he overused in
the opener?
Speaker 6 (21:29):
He had a lot of touches he did and it
felt like they needed that get now that was that
game felt more than just a week one. It was like, hey,
these two teams could be battling for home field advantage
in the playoffs, you know, Eagles and Packers. I don't
think that's the case here with San fran and the Vikings.
I think there's a pretty big gap between these two.
So I'm with resting McCaffrey and then you unleash him
against the Rams next week in a game you really
(21:51):
want to win, right Yeah, all right. Next up is
Tua and the Miami Dolphins. They faced the Bills Thursday night,
what should be a really good game. However, Tua he's
had a rough go against the Bills in his career
eight starts. He's one in six and was injured in
the other. Tua knows there's one way to end the
narrative for the Dolphins against the Bills.
Speaker 9 (22:12):
That's going to be what's written out there until we
do something about that. That's going to be the narrative
that we can't beat the Bills. And until we do
beat them, and we beat them consistently, like, none of
that's going to change. And we have an opportunity to
do that this year. We have an opportunity to do that.
This there's it.
Speaker 3 (22:32):
Yeah, you know, go ahead, that backwards at the podium.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
No, forget it. No, don't blame too it because they
can't beat the Bills. They can't stop Josh Allen. That's
also true.
Speaker 3 (22:41):
Ye are not good against the Bills. You're there, well again,
sixty one percent completions. He's not a seventy three percent guy.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
He has not played well against them. That's fair. But
they've also had in his tenure in Miami a very
good pass rush and one of the top defensive coaches.
You're not going to put up great numbers against Sean
McDermott in that pass rush. That's fair to Buffalo. Buffalo
does two things Josh Allen in a fast rule.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Well, the opposite side of the coin is Josh Allen
is eleven and two against now.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
He has owned them. It is like Big Ben in
the Browns. He's owned them.
Speaker 6 (23:11):
Forty one total touchdowns, thirteen picks for Josh Allen. Now, listen,
he put on a superman show in the opener. Can
he do it again? We're seeing, you know, a lot
of professional money on the Dolphins here. No, I think
you and I got last Thursday's game right. We both
like Kansas City, I like Miami.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
I watched that game against Arizona, and my takeaway is, Okay,
at some point, this can't just be the Josh Allen offense.
And I don't mind that Stefan Diggs has gone because
I like their tight ends and Cook their running back,
and they went and got the Florida State receiver. So
that's interesting to me. But that game felt like Josh.
They were down like seventeen three. Josh had to save
(23:52):
them again at home against Arizona.
Speaker 6 (23:56):
The Dolphins were down seventeen three at home or seventeen zero,
seventeen seven, something like that.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
But I Jacksonville, to me, has a lot of components
to be a really good team. We think Arizona's a
fourth place team.
Speaker 6 (24:08):
Yeah, and Miami's got some injuries. I saw most artificially
ruled out for Thursday. Devin a Chan, they're gonna He's
not automatically gonna play, and he's really nice.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
Out of the backfield.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
Dude's fast, So I don't know. I gotta be careful
with Thursday night football.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
Final story.
Speaker 6 (24:21):
Let's go to college football. Texas had a win in
the Big House over Michigan Saturday. I was way wrong
on that, boy, you nailed that game, Texas looked awesome.
They are now number two in the latest Ay People.
The Longhorns battle Mighty Utsa this weekend, and Sark doesn't
want them to fall into the same trap as Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
Human nature is human nature.
Speaker 10 (24:44):
And so what did I do this morning?
Speaker 11 (24:46):
I walked him through the Notre Dame scenario of them
going into College station a week ago and winning that
game and being anointed the top five team, and then
the college football playoff and a week later losing to
Northern Illinois. And so I showed the clip of the
field goal, and I showed the clip of Northern Illinois
storm in the field this morning as a good reminder
that nothing. We are entitled to nothing. You know, we're
(25:09):
capable of anything. We've got a really good team, but
we're entitled to nothing, and we're gonna earn everything we get.
We're gonna have to earn the victory here Saturday night.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
Boy, if you watch that Texas Michigan game, the two
teams in this sport right now that feel different just
look different. Georgia and Texas, they look different. There's a
lot of teams that are better than I thought USC
and there are teams that aren't. Maybe Safe hasn't played anyway. Oregon,
by the way, has been bad, right like that, USC's
better than I thought, Oregon's worse. Ohio State will be fine.
(25:40):
But when you watch Texas. Steve Sarkeishan came on this
show about a week ago and he said something before
the game. He said, we have situations where our backups
are as good as we can't tell the difference between
our ones and our twos. And that was a little
like Michigan last year where they had guys in the
defensive front rotating in. You're like that, they're not going
backwards at all. I think Texas and Georgia are stacked teams.
(26:02):
I think Alabama is good, They're not stacked. I think
Ohio State's pretty close to stacked. But Texas looks different.
Their offensive line, it's bigger than prolonge.
Speaker 12 (26:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
No, the Georgia game October nineteenth, I don't.
Speaker 10 (26:17):
Know where that is.
Speaker 6 (26:18):
I'm looking at the schedules, just I guess it's in Texas,
says versus Georgia.
Speaker 3 (26:22):
And that's the week after the Oklahoma game.
Speaker 6 (26:25):
Oh man, that schedule gets way tougher there in the
middle of those two back to back like they should
beat Oklahoma.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
They'll be saved.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
Georgia is tough. That'll be the game of the year
maybe in college football. But they're going to roll over Oklahoma.
Speaker 6 (26:38):
And if you notice, you see a lot of SEC
opponents on the schedule, and none of them are ranked because.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
The SEC is not that good this year.
Speaker 6 (26:44):
People that I know SEC fans are panicking and they're like, oh,
come on, they're just not as deep as they normally aren't.
That SEC is not a juggernaut.
Speaker 1 (26:51):
Well, now that it's an nil world. Ohio State's got
a lot of money, and Oregon's got money, and USC's
got third USC high school recruit they're going down to
the South and pulling guys out because they're paying them.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
And the transfer portal too.
Speaker 1 (27:04):
There's a lot of money out west.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
If you're sitting on the third string on Georgia, why
would you do that?
Speaker 1 (27:09):
When you go dar even that sometime, these these SEC
schools are in small towns where a car dealers the
richest guy in town. We got Apple out here, and
Google out here, and Met out here some of these
six of the Now, now I will say this about
the SEC, it's still really really the conference filled with
the most NFL bodies. Yes, so, so we're all freaking
(27:31):
out because uscbt LSU. But LSU is gonna win ten games.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
Well, no, Notre Dame be Texas A and m on
the road. Miami went into Florida and won.
Speaker 1 (27:39):
Like we've seen a bunch of I mean, if you
look at the top twenty five, it's still a bunch
of SEC teams.
Speaker 6 (27:43):
Obviously they're gonna get favoritism, and well they were on
the boy.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
You're gonna blame the moderators.
Speaker 3 (27:49):
I'm gonna blame the dope voters who every year is
they're the best team. Every year they got the best place.
Speaker 1 (27:54):
Well they usually do. SEC is the best conference.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
Colin Okay, Chigan didn't beat Alabama in the playoff last year.
Speaker 1 (28:01):
You know everybody liked Alabama.
Speaker 3 (28:05):
You can't sell me on the SEC.
Speaker 2 (28:07):
They're down.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
Yes, they're great at the top with Georgia, that's undenied.
Speaker 1 (28:10):
Thin they I think they've got the best quarterbacks. Jackson
darted old Missus excellent back at George's great. I think
Nesmier at LSU is a good player.
Speaker 3 (28:21):
You know, quinn Ewers, that's a guy I'll ride with.
Speaker 12 (28:24):
I like his game.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
You don't like the cut of his jib.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
Ja mack with the news, Well that's the news, and
thanks for stopping by.
Speaker 12 (28:36):
That.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
Occasionally I'll sprinkle in a cocktail to my life. Always,
always with a focus on the big games, not on
big game nights. There's two things I can't do late,
eat ice cream and smoke a cigar. I did both
last night, so I'm a little fuzzy today. I'm not
gonna lie. I'm a little fuzzy. But you know what,
(28:57):
third cup of Joe I'm gonna get through this thing.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
Woops, you get the gum?
Speaker 1 (29:01):
No, I chewed it all. You're out of it. I
chewed all my gums, so I have to order a
new gum boy.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
Why it's not in town and you're just letting it
all hang out, huh.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
I don't even put my drinks on coasters when she's out.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
Of two Living on the edge.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and Noone Easter not a Empacific.
Speaker 10 (29:20):
Hey gang, This is Jay Glazer, host of Unbreakable, a
mental wealth podcast, and every week we will have on
leaders from sports entertainment.
Speaker 13 (29:30):
Like Sean McVay, Lindsay Vaughn, Michael Phelps, David Spade, got Fiemi,
and also those who can help us in between the ears,
anyone from a therapist to someone like Ed Milett or
John Gordon.
Speaker 10 (29:41):
We've all been through some sort of adversity to get
to the top. We've all used different tools. Listen to
Unbreakable with Jay Glazer and Mental Wealth podcast on the
iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts or wherever you get podcasts.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
All right, he's the new guy at FS one. Our
friend Danny parkins to Chicago breakfast ball in the morning
after a great start. Now as a guy that has
grown up in Chicago and suffered through a lot of
lean years because all that MJ stuff that wasn't on
your clock, you're a kid right then. Now it's about
(30:17):
the White Sox and the Bears and and you know
the Bulls who are officially tanking. Here's my concern about
the Bears is that I love Caleb Williams, but in
college last year, three times in the preseason and in
game one, he's completing fifty percent of his throws fifty
five percent of his throws around there, and whereas Mahomes
(30:41):
and Stafford other great quarterbacks Josh Allen can get a
little loose because they're so gifted. Cam Newton did this.
If you look at the guys that get loose, Andy
Reid brings Mahomes back in the fairway. McVeigh brings Stafford
back in the fairway. Cam didn't have that guy in
a defensive culture. And I worry that as Caleb does
(31:06):
what Caleb does with all this god given talent, he
gets mechanically a little off. He's missing receivers. Is it
a legitimate concern? I know it's early. Is that a concern?
Speaker 2 (31:20):
Well, it couldn't be earlier.
Speaker 12 (31:21):
Colin has been one game the preseason was twenty pass
attempts and there were four drops, including one that was completed,
the Roman dunze where he stepped out the back line
of the end zone. So the preseason sample size was small.
This was only twenty nine pass attempts against the Titans.
But listen, undeniably, it was not good. And I think
(31:42):
to your point, undeniably, Shane Waldron the new offensive coordinator
of the Bears.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
He's not Sean.
Speaker 12 (31:48):
McVay and he's not Andy Reid. So I cannot put
the offensive infrastructure of the Bears on Caleb Williams to
say that he's going to be in a situation like
those other greats were in it.
Speaker 2 (31:58):
So I think all of that is there.
Speaker 12 (32:00):
It is one game, but I'll be honest. You reference
growing up in Chicago and I'm thirty seven. I'll be
thirty eight soon. But itesn't matter if I was fifty
seven or seventy seven. No chicagoan, no Bears fan at
any age ever has seen a great quarterback. So we
tend to be a patient bunch. Like we're not Philly,
(32:21):
we're not New York. Justin Fields had his name chanted
at Soldier Field.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
In his last game as first game, not.
Speaker 12 (32:30):
The first game of his last season, the last game
of his career, when it was very clear to anybody
that they were going to get the number one pick
and they were gonna draft Kayleb Williams and they were
gonna move on from Justin Fields. So we've got some
patients in us because if we've waited our entire lives
for greatness at the position, we could wait until, you know,
week two of Kayleb Williams's rookie year.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
So now that you've moved your family to New York.
You get an opportunity to listen to Wfan and read
the New York papers, and they're aggressive, outspoken, loud lot
and I said this morning, there are four or five
things I take away from the Jets loss that are positive.
The Niners are a brutal team to open with. Let's
(33:12):
be honest. This offensive line was not terrible. Bosa didn't
get a sack, and Aaron doesn't open well. He's a distracted, rich,
single guy in his off seasons. He hasn't been good
at openers in like six or seven years. Having digested
some of the New York media, I'm sure you did
over the last day. What is the sense in New
(33:35):
York Giants or toast, But what's the sense with the
Jets this morning?
Speaker 12 (33:41):
Well, they're concerned because it didn't look good and they
were supposed to be great defensively. It's one thing about
Aaron Rodgers and Okay, he hasn't played in twenty months,
and he's forty, and he's coming off of and Achilles,
and like it's reasonable to have some rust on the
offensive side of the ball. And yes, Kyle Shanahan makes
a lot of people look real bad. But Robert Sala
(34:03):
was the defensive coordinator with Kyle Shanahan, So if anyone
should know how to stop that system or at least
slow it down, it should be Sala. And the Jets
defense was just getting gashed over the middle of the
passing game. They are getting gashed on the outside with
the running game. So there's definite concern. And I certainly
wouldn't say that I can speak for all Jets fans
just because I've been in New York for a little bit,
but I would say this too. This is one of
(34:24):
the few teams in the NFL that it really is
super Bowl or bust. Like Aaron Rodgers, if he's healthy,
he will be better than Zach Wilson last year. But
for how long you have this year with Aaron Rodgers
maybe next year. He's mercurial at best, So he's clearly
going to be a year to year proposition. So to me,
(34:45):
it's like, okay, great, maybe they will be better than
last year and they'll figure it out a little bit
and they'll be a nine or a ten win team.
But the goal of this entire exercise has not been
to make the playoffs. It has been to win the
Super Bowl and I'll ask you that team we saw
on Monday night, they look like a team that was
more ready to make a Super Bowl or miss the
playoffs entirely.
Speaker 1 (35:05):
Yeah, I said offensively. When I watch Kansas City and
Baltimore on Thursday, and the Packers and the Eagles the
following day, and the Lions and the Rams, the Jets
don't stack up offensively. I mean they're a twisted ankle
from Brece Hall to being a really limited offense, like
a really limited I mean, you look at San Francisco.
(35:25):
They don't play McCaffrey and they have seven offensive players,
including left tackle Trent Williams. I'm like, oh, those are
Jawn Jennings is their number three receiver and he was unguardable.
So I think what I think when I look at
the Jets is the margins are very thin. Is that
if they're healthy, it could be good. But this is
(35:46):
a long season.
Speaker 12 (35:48):
Well it's a it's a sport of injuries, and if
they're healthy, they can be good.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (35:53):
You can say that about a lot of teams, and
they are relying on guys who you cannot trust to
be healthy. Aaron Rodgers had been pretty healthy throughout his career,
but he's a forty year olds coming off in achilles.
I don't think it's unreasonable to say that's concerning Tyron Smith.
He's missed a lot of games. Mike Williams, it was
Garrett Wilson and who else in the passing game. He
(36:14):
was just locked in on Garrett Wilson. Good guy to
be locked in on, but you'd like to have more
help there. Mike Williams not a guy you can count
on to play a lot of games. So is this
a super Bowl caliber roster if they get MVP caliber
quarterback play?
Speaker 1 (36:27):
Of course it is.
Speaker 12 (36:28):
But it's been a while since Aaron Rodgers has been
an MVP caliber player, and we have no guarantees whatsoever
that he's going to survive the season.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
You know a take, I only got a couple of
minutes left to take on Dak is now the highest
paid quarterback. We know the last guy. His signs always
the highest paid quarterback. I don't think i've ever heard
your take on Dak nick Wright, and I feel the
same way. Great guy, good quarterback, overcompensated. What are you
on Dak?
Speaker 2 (36:52):
Well?
Speaker 12 (36:53):
That may or may not be true, but it almost
doesn't matter because of how the economics of the sport work. Yes,
the most recent gets the most money, but also it's binary.
You either have a quarterback or you don't. The Falcons
gave Kirk Cousins one hundred million guaranteed at thirty five
coming off of ruptured Achilles because they had Desmond Ridder
last year.
Speaker 1 (37:11):
Desmond Ridders not on a team right now.
Speaker 12 (37:14):
So all of a sudden they get a quarterback and
they're like, hey, we can win this division, we can
win playoff games. The Dolphins pay tu they have no
other choice. The Packers pay Jordan Love, they have no
other choice. So Dak Prescott, thirty one years old, coming
off of the best season of his career, runner up
for the MVP Dallas.
Speaker 1 (37:33):
Had no choice.
Speaker 12 (37:35):
The only way Dak Prescott wasn't going to be a
cowboy was if Dak Prescott didn't want to be a cowboy.
So we waited for everybody else to sign those deals.
And now his AAV average annual value starts with a six,
and he got one million more guaranteed than DeShawn Watson.
That wasn't an accident. It was because he had the leverage.
Speaker 1 (37:52):
Danny Craig Carton Mark schleraths breakfast Ball brand new show.
A couple of weeks old moved his family from Chicago,
which we strongly encouraged to New York. Is it going okay?
Speaker 12 (38:01):
So far, it's going great. I'm here, I'm traveling back.
The family will be out here soon. And I just
I did it for the opportunity to change my life,
change my family's life, and get to your level. Did
you say before the break that you order your gum?
That's the richest rich guy thing I've ever heard. Are
you just never in a store? You're just here, You're
never at an airport, kios, You're never at a gas station.
Speaker 1 (38:22):
You order your gum? What is that? Neurogum? It's it's
a caffeine stuff. He was gum and it's well, whatever
it is, it's odd, but you order your gum.
Speaker 12 (38:33):
I got to get to your level, Colin.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
That's why I'm here. To get to your level, or
I'm ordering gum. All right, breakfast Ball. Danny parkins good,
see anybody you as well? Joel Klatt joins us next hour. Yeah,
the I'm looking over the games this weekend. What happens
when the best bet is Thursday?
Speaker 3 (38:56):
I think you think the best bet on the board
is Miami against Buffalo.
Speaker 1 (38:59):
I think there's three bets I look at this week.
I think Miami against Buffalo is my number one or two.
Bet Houston hosting Chicago and the Jets at the Titans.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
To those.
Speaker 1 (39:12):
You know, I don't love favorites, but last year the
Joe's Pros versus Joe's Sharps versus Marx, the Mark and
the Joe. Yeah no, the fans bet favorites. On average,
fans bet favorites. It's why because I have some fuddies
who do this for a living. It's why I don't
bet favorites. I bet underdogs. But there's a reason you're
(39:33):
an underdog. Your quarterback's not good and the league is
more quarterback centric. So you're giving me Aaron Rodgers against
Will Levis, c J. Stroud against Caleb Williams. Well, what
do you want me to do? I don't care what
the line is.
Speaker 3 (39:43):
Okay, so let's go Tampa Bay Detroit.
Speaker 6 (39:45):
We got a minute here. I'm just reading the injury
report from the Bucks. They're gonna be down three defensive backs,
including Winfield. They're great safety against I'm a Ross Saint
Brown Jamison Williams, Jared Goff.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
They didn't look particularly sharp throwing the ball. I think
Saint Brown had three catches. They're going to torch this
buck secondary. So the line has gone from three to
seven well and also a huge jump.
Speaker 1 (40:07):
They played poorly in the second half and won, and
Sean Payton Noah says, that's the team you can coach hardest,
you win, but don't play particularly well. And let's be honest.
The Lions didn't have the football in the second half.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
But they went away for that. Montgomery didn't have a
carry in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
Was Detroit was a power team. I don't think they
know they are yet. It's like guys forty carries a weekend.
They could run Jared Goff play action pass like that
team and that old line in those backs, you could
run the ball.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
Three forty to seventeen type. Lions win.
Speaker 1 (40:39):
Hour two. Joel Clatten next
