You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
Well, it's tear down time in the NFL as bad
teams start accumulating draft picks and sending pretty good players
to teams that are competing for the playoffs. So Amri Cooper,
it's just announced Cleveland is in teardown mode. They're sending
their very talented wide receiver to the Buffalo Bills. So
(00:46):
that's a breaking story, Amari Cooper. We knew Devonte Adams
from the Reeling Raiders is going to the Jets for
a conditional third rounder. Now, Amri Cooper, good dependable, veteran
y receiver. So they've got a rookie wide receiver, a
slot receiver. James Cook at running back missed, he doesn't
miss much. He was out last night. Two good tight ends.
(01:08):
So they're adding another kind of a high volume receiver.
Amari Cooper a couple of weeks ago, people suggested he
was just like done with Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
I don't blame him.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
So you talk about an upgrade from Deshaun Watson to
Josh Allen, from the mess in Cleveland to the Buffalo Bills.
That's the one thing about trades and pro sports. Amari
Cooper wakes up this morning, He's sitting there and thinking,
how do I get through the rest of this year?
Now the kid has a chance to play in a
Super Bowl. So good for Amari Cooper. Dave wanstat six
(01:40):
years as a Bears head coach, five in Miami, a
Super Bowl champ.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
With the Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
For the record, Dave, you never want to be giving
up good players at the trade deadline. That means you're
a bad team. But when you're a good team, what's realistic.
You want to get a guy that doesn't screw with
your chemistry. And Amari Cooper, I don't think does did
you like making moves in season?
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Well, you know, the times have changed a little bit
from when we really couldn't make any at least we
couldn't make any for a good player. There were guys
that were cut. You could sign off the waiver wire,
but more likely they wouldn't make much of an impact.
But nowadays, I'll tell you what you talk about. A
shot in the arm for the teams that need a player,
(02:25):
you know, Davonte Adams, the Jets, obviously Cooper, we're talking
now at the Bills. But it's also it kind of
keeps the franchises that are tearing down. Hey, it gives
them obviously more ammunition getting ready for the draft. And
it's a little bit of a shot in the arm
for their personnel people too. Hey, this isn't what we're
stuck with. We got draft picks. Now we can get
(02:48):
better for the future.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
You know you always told me, Dave, I've quoted you
many times. You can lose games, but not the locker room.
After losing that game last night to drop to two
and four, I thought Davante Adams was a smart signing, Dave,
because it does add some juice. It puts Aaron in
a good mood the locker room. You know, you go
to and four, Dave, you can lose some players. You
(03:10):
can lose guys. I think Davante gives you hope, does
he not?
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Absolutely? I mean, besides his talent, you know, the one
thing people forget this. When Aaron Rodgers was at the
Green Bay Packers, and you know he had Aaron Jones
was the running back and he was.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
Really the lifeline. People because of Aaron Rodgers the quarterback,
people lose sight of how they ran the ball.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
With Dylan and Aaron Jones, they were in the top
five in running the football and.
Speaker 5 (03:40):
That's what set up all the play action passes.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
So last night, what the Jets did last night by
coming out and change it. Yeah, you talked about the
motions earlier, absolutely, but guess what, when you run the
ball like they did with Bryce Hall, that's going to
give Aaron Rodgers a chance to do what he does
best with his play action pass.
Speaker 5 (04:00):
Coming into last night's game, call him. They were like
twenty third in the league in number of play.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
Action passes with Aaron Rodgers, they were sixty eight percent
drop back. They were in the top five in the
league drop him back. So besides the motions, they had
a little bit of a philosophy change that's coming.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
It's going to get back there.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
I think a lot more heavier run, which will slow
down that pass rush and now create what Aaron does
best his play action pass game.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
I said, one of the things I don't like about
firing Sala, who I think is a heck of a
football coach. He may not be a head coach, but
I think they fired the best coach on the staff.
You put an interim coach in and what happens, Dave
As you know, it's like the substitute teacher syndrome. Everybody
tries to impress the new coach and plays hard and
then all of a sudden, ownership's like, yeah, that's our guy,
(04:49):
and there was a reason he was a coordinator. I
just think in the AFC, interim coaches aren't beating Nanny Reid,
John Harbaugh, Jim Harbaugh, Demiko Ryan's I mean, do you
think the Jets. I mean they may have some Jews
now with Davante, but I mean you faced interim coaches
in your career, did you feel like it was an advantage?
Speaker 4 (05:11):
Well, what we saw last night, there was a new
burst of energy, you could call it. You know, everybody
was excited about playing.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
They were at home. That helps with an opportunity to
win the game. So I thought they had a good plan.
I really did, on all sides of the ball.
Speaker 4 (05:27):
You know, they missed field goals, they give up those sacks,
they had drops. You talk about Davonte Adams, you know,
I mean it's if you're defending them. Before last night,
the running game was minimal, right the running game ever,
running for less than four yards of carry, that's not
going to keep you away get light night. As a
defensive coordinator, you know you got to defend Garrett Wilson,
(05:48):
and last night Mike Williams had the other receiver.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
He had three targets. I think he dropped two of them.
Speaker 6 (05:53):
Collin.
Speaker 5 (05:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
So Davonte Adams is gonna slot right in there. And now,
guess what if I'm defending the Jets right now, I
got to defend the entire field, both outside wideouts and
that running game as well as they stay committed to
it to be balanced, that'll make a huge difference in
this football game.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
When you were with the Bears, a lot of that
talent was on defense. I said this yesterday. It's the
first time I can remember my adult life looking at
the Bears and thinking they've got a great franchise quarterback
and some of the best pieces in the league. In fact,
I think their biggest concern is the division. Everybody is stacked.
There's the best division easily in football. But you live
(06:32):
in Chicago, spend a lot of time there. I don't
think it's hyperbolic. I think this team, this team's good.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
I mean, if you've.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Been impressed by Caleb, we're surprised by him.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
Yeah, And I'm obviously you know, I do all their
pre and post game and everything on TV up fair,
So I'm up at training camp, I'm at the OTAs.
And what Caleb does he has He's advanced in his
football knowledge years. I mean at the end of a
game last week he talked about why didn't want to
take any chances.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
They were saying, you didn't throw the ball down the field.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
No, not this week, a week ago, he says, well,
I knew that our defense, you know, was playing real good.
I mean for a rookie quarterback to even be observant
of what's going on big picture, and every throw that
this kid makes, he can explain it to you when
it whether it was good or bad.
Speaker 5 (07:22):
At the end of the game.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
So I mean he's he's light years ahead of most
rookies from a football knowledge standpoint. And guess what in
yesterday's game, when Game Day won, they had twenty nine
runs and twenty nine.
Speaker 5 (07:35):
Pass Yeah, they were exactly balanced.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
And when you're doing that with a young quarterback, and
then he ran a little bit.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
Why did he run because it wasn't third and nine.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
The first two or three weeks of the season, they
were you know, they couldn't run the ball at all.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
I mean they were.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
Averaging two yards of carry and he was in third
and long every series.
Speaker 5 (07:56):
They were having six eight ten penalties a game. They
had two.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
They had two against Jacksonville. So they played clean, they
played balanced, and it helped him. I mean it took
a lot of pressure off of him.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Yeah, so.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Nick Sirianni shaved his head, yelling at fans kids at
the podium. I mean when you as a former coach
who was in big cities like Chicago, like Dallas, what
do you make of that when you saw him jousting
with fans.
Speaker 7 (08:30):
You know what?
Speaker 4 (08:31):
A long time ago, when I just got into the business,
one of my head coaches said when I was in college,
he says, never show a crack in the armor. Never
show the media, never show the fans, Never show your
players a crack in the armor. And when I saw that,
I said that to me, I'm observing a major crack.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
In the armor at Philadelphia. Yeah, it's you're not going
to win that one calling.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
Yeah, that's really okay. So Jerry Jones this morning, he
got all worked up. So you've seen happy Jerry. You've
seen the prideful Jerry. Have you ever heard him like that?
I mean that that was I mean even the one
in fifteen year. He wasn't worked up like that, was he?
Speaker 5 (09:20):
No, you're talking about a crack in the armor.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
If we could be talking about every No, what I
gotta say this the one in fifteen year and I
had texted Jimmy some stuff. I mean, it's hard to
believe because they we were like starting from grind level. Okay,
how this happened is mind bottling. I gotta tell a story.
We would keep I had a stack of defensive playbooks
(09:45):
calling in my defensive office, and these players would.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
Work out Tuesday.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
Jimmy would bring these guys in and he'd send a
personnel guy to walk three guys down my office and say, well, uh,
here's your two new linebackers and a new say safety
or two new lives. I'd say, okay, guys, here's your playbook.
So we were rolling guys in. I'm just and and
then we would play him on Sunday. And one time
(10:10):
there was a way we ran a tight end. We
had signed a new linebacker and the guy they caught
a ten yard pass and then maybe twenty and Jimmy
clicks the head so on he says, hey, Dave, we
got to stop that route. I said, Jimmy, I'm gonna
be awest with you. I never got a chance to explain.
Speaker 5 (10:26):
That route to the guy. He showed up in my
office Thursday.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
The guy had one day of practice and uh so,
so what I the point is when I see what's
going on now with a team that had won twelve
games a year, and Jerry said, you know, everything is fine.
Speaker 5 (10:41):
We're all in.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
It's a little bit mind bottling. And you know, Jerry
always puts a spin on things. I don't care what
he's talking about. He's going to give you the half
the glasses half full talk. We've all heard it and
he's fabulous at that.
Speaker 5 (10:58):
That's what he does, right.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
This was one of the first times where I think
these players and they know where the buck stops. You
got a lane lane duck coach. There you know, Jerry's
gonna make the personnel.
Speaker 5 (11:09):
Jerry.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Everybody knows in that organization where the buck stops, right
and when players and coaches here, Jerry not really having
an answer, Yeah, not really having an answer.
Speaker 5 (11:20):
In my opinion, that's not good.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
I mean that that's gonna kind of put everybody back
on their heels.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
Even more so as far as the football team moving forward,
where are we going now? It's uh, it's it's tough.
It's really a tough situation. And I don't know what's
going to spark at the turn of the route. I
really don't at this point.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
Yeah, the NFC, as you well know, coach just the NFC, North, Vikings, Packers, Lions, Bears,
those are all potential playoff teams. So the the NFC
had a couple.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
Of down years.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
I mean, Dallas made a lot of hay against an
awful Washington team.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Well they're not bad anymore.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
And even even when you whatever you think about Daniel Jones,
when Malik Neighbors is healthy, the Giants are a tough out.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
They went up to Seattle in one so I think
I think there.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
Was a little fool's gold where they were winning twelve
regular season games, and the NFC was down. But now
that Chicago and Washington have hit on quarterbacks, brock perty
San Francisco's hit on the quarterback is there? If I
said to you, Kansas City's the best team in the league,
who's the second best team?
Speaker 5 (12:28):
To you?
Speaker 1 (12:28):
Who wouldn't you want to face second best team after
the Chiefs.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
Detroit?
Speaker 4 (12:36):
I think Detroit just from the standpoint that you know,
Jared Goff. I mean, they've got receivers, they've got a
good defense, and I know that the injury thing is
I hate to even talk about that with Hutch, but
Detroit is the type of team that will knock you
on your knees and they're not going to back off,
you know, and they'll make enough they'll score enough points
(12:57):
to beat you. Yeah, but I think the Troit is
a team that would would really concern me because of
the run, the past, the defense.
Speaker 5 (13:04):
Everything. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
They can be clever, they can do trick plays, they
can be flashy, and they can be physical and I
know you love that run game.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
Hey, hey, Colin, last year in the playoff game against
San Francisco, would they have a seventeen point leader or
whatever it was, No, they would have had if he
kicks the field goal, he could have run quarterback sneaks
every play the second half and won that game. San
Francisco wouldn't be able to catch him if he kicked
the field goals. So I think Dan Campbell's learned a lot.
As long as he makes keeps making good the fourth
(13:35):
down decisions, the fakes decisions, fake punts, field goals. You know,
those type of things can catch up with you as
we get down the road. As long as he keeps
those decisions clean like he's doing now, that's gonna help
his team one hundred percent.
Speaker 5 (13:50):
I think they're going to be better than last year.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
Dave wonstat as oas coach. Great senior, appreciate.
Speaker 5 (13:55):
It, all right, call it toe Youyboddy?
Speaker 3 (13:57):
All right?
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Yeah, he does a lot of stuff for the Big
ten Chicago Bears, and the Bears are a good watch.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon Eastern a em Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Here's j Mack with the news.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
No, no turn on the news. This is the Herd
Line News.
Speaker 8 (14:20):
Speaking of good watch, how about Thursday Night football? Are
you excited New Orleans.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
And Denver College.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
Sean Payton goes back to face his former geez.
Speaker 9 (14:29):
He does now a lot of injuries, which you'll get
to later.
Speaker 8 (14:32):
Sean Payton's first trip back to New Orleans after spending
fifteen years there and winning the city's only Super Bowl title.
Speaking to the media yesterday, Peyton discussed his return to
the Superdope.
Speaker 6 (14:42):
Certainly there'll be emotions going back there with players, and
but I do think that comes up quite a bit,
you know, in our league with players, and in this case,
you know, certainly the amount of time that I I
was there, I understand it. It's about to win. The
(15:04):
significance to us playing our books best football on a
short week, and it's about our team.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Santa reeling kind of reeling.
Speaker 9 (15:17):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (15:18):
As soon as I saw some of these injuries yesterday,
I bad bet the Broncos. So first of all, Chris
o'lave got a concussion Sunday, yep, very unlikely that the
Ts around the time, very very good player Rashid Shaheed,
their other great Oliver has a knee issue. Unclear how serious,
but it doesn't sound like he's gonna be going could
be headed to il So now you're like, oh my gosh, backup, quarterback,
(15:40):
down your top two wide receivers as they were on
their third string center. So everybody bet the Broncos. It's
up to two as you see on the screen here.
But however, for Denver no Patrick Tartan, he got a
concussion Sunday against the Chargers.
Speaker 9 (15:52):
Doesn't look like he's going to be back in time.
Speaker 8 (15:53):
But I think your guy Bo Nicks, Nick Spencer Rattler,
it was like a college football game.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
Now, how about this Nicks after that heady second half
against the Chargers on a little bit of a heater.
Speaker 9 (16:05):
You call it heady second half.
Speaker 8 (16:07):
I call it extensive garbage time in the fourth courtner
where they were now twenty three nothink.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
All. What I'm saying is, you guys were all dumping
on the Broncos, and U I said they're the guaranteed best.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
Over fat they're gonna win this game. Well premature on
that they're gonna win this game.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Rattler looked a little over his skis Bo Nicks, I
think they're just bringing him along slowly. I thought the
first half game plan was limited. They had they had
offensive line beat up.
Speaker 8 (16:36):
So do you remember Sean Payton would come on the
show last year every week every week and during commercials
he would tell his stories. And he told us about
one revenge spot that he had, do you remember, and
he was like playing the Lion Kings song in practice. Yeah,
and they ended up hanging a fifty burger on somebody.
Just keep an eye out for the Broncos here.
Speaker 5 (16:51):
Just oh.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
I think he loves the Bronx.
Speaker 9 (16:53):
I know, but you're returning home. You don't want to lose.
I think he's got some extra special stuff dialed up
this week.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Boy, how about Denver? What would this be their fifth win?
Speaker 5 (17:01):
Already?
Speaker 9 (17:02):
Stop one of the I think there's three and three right, No,
if you don't.
Speaker 8 (17:07):
Have they're not in the playoff mixed like the Jet
So I don't really pay as close attention to Next up.
Speaker 9 (17:12):
Colin the Cleveland Browns. Oh No, this is a reeling franchise.
Speaker 8 (17:17):
They've lost four straight and they became the first team
since the twenty fourteen Jag to fail to reach twenty
points in each of their first six games. Deshaun Watson
is at the heart of a lot of their offensive issues,
but Kevin Stefanski is surprisingly keeping him under center.
Speaker 10 (17:34):
I think Deshaun gives us the best chance to win,
continues to give us the best chance to win, and
we need to play really good offensive football at his
position and really at every position to be to be successful.
Speaker 5 (17:46):
On Sunday.
Speaker 10 (17:46):
I don't get caught up in narratives, but we have
a good dialogue with myself Andrew Ownership about all.
Speaker 8 (17:54):
Things that have to do with this team.
Speaker 10 (17:56):
They've been nothing but supportive, and any decision when it
comes to football is my decision.
Speaker 8 (18:03):
Kevin Stefanski defending once, I'll just say this, if the
Browns happen to run him off, oh you get a
job in fifteen, I would hope the Jets would go
get him. He is a smart offensive mind. Smartermind people.
Joe Flacco came off with the Sofa last year, joins
the Browns and they make the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
Andy Reid and Belichick got fired. If Stefanski gets moved,
you hire him in I mean Andy Reid was out
of work for a.
Speaker 9 (18:26):
Week seven minutes.
Speaker 8 (18:28):
Yeah, yeah, and Stefan, I'm not just talking O see,
I'm talking to the head coach.
Speaker 9 (18:31):
Kevin Stefanski. I think is smart.
Speaker 8 (18:33):
Now, what does it signal to you that they've traded
Amari Cooper today.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
They want picks, they they I think it signals they
want to accumulate picks and draft another quarterback.
Speaker 8 (18:43):
Well, they could be bad enough that they're drafting a
quarterback in the top five.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
That's what I'm saying, that they're going to go get
a quarterback and they'll just eat again. If you can
get a quarterback in the top ten for four years,
the money situation can play in your favor.
Speaker 9 (18:57):
Listen. I know everybody's like the dead cap, the dead cap.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
Stop it.
Speaker 8 (19:00):
Teams are making the playoffs with thirty forty million dead
cat money. Okay, that happened last year. It's probably gonna
happen again this year. Let's just get over that. And
you know, you suffer a year or two of struggles
and you get through it. But Watson, I mean, this
is this really is one of the bigger falls we've
seen from a star quarterback.
Speaker 3 (19:17):
Yeah, look at these numbers.
Speaker 9 (19:18):
Yeah, I just don't And that's just this season.
Speaker 8 (19:20):
People have stretched it back two and three years and
he's like one of the worst quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
Over I never I never thought he was an a
prospect anywhere. I thought I thought he was an a athlete.
Speaker 8 (19:30):
Let's not overlook what he was doing at Clemson. He
went totatoe with Bama twice, beat him once Bama. That
was when Bama.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
Would not overlook his off field transgressions, which should have
made him persona non grata for any owner. We didn't
know that well, no, no, he was coming out, No no, no,
I'm saying. But once he was in Houston, that stuff
came out. Everybody knew what was going on, and Cleveland
poorly owned rolled the die. The smart owners were like, yuck,
get away. Yeah, there was there was a lot of
(19:58):
smoke here before the fire.
Speaker 8 (19:59):
You could argue that Stefanski could just be, hey, we're
keeping Watson out there because it helps them tank. I mean,
I know you're not actively tanking, but they need a
quarterback and if you're like drafting fifteenth, you're missing out
on you.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
Look at the word.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Denver had the Russell Wilson mass and the money, but
they hit on bow knicks and the bottom line is
they're better than last year and they don't have to
pay bow next for four years.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
So if you hit on a quarterback, you can get
out of a lot of financial trouble agreed.
Speaker 8 (20:26):
Final story Colin is, let's go to college football the Ducks.
How about that Oregon's versus Ohio State game Saturday? What
a finish.
Speaker 9 (20:34):
Here's the video of the final drive.
Speaker 8 (20:36):
Oregon did a strategy that's being criticized but also applauded.
Speaker 9 (20:41):
All of a.
Speaker 8 (20:41):
Sudden, they with ten seconds left, they had twelve guys
on the field. Dan Lanning ran out a twelfth player
and it appeared to be on purpose.
Speaker 9 (20:48):
Four seconds ran off.
Speaker 8 (20:49):
The clock and that was pivotal because on the next play,
Will Howard ran out the clock scrambling. Dan Lanning says
that penalty the twelfth man was all part of the plan.
Speaker 11 (20:58):
Yeah, there was a time out before that. We spent
in amount of time on situations. There's some situations that
don't show up very often in college football, but this
is one that obviously was something that we have worked on.
Speaker 3 (21:09):
So you can see the result.
Speaker 9 (21:12):
That's amazing. Situational football by the Oregon Ducks. Just super smart.
Speaker 8 (21:18):
Now people are complaining, and now the NCAA is like,
we're going to investigate this rule that's loophole and they're
going to try to close it. Because listen, that was
like genius level stuff for a football coach. Hey, let's
let's take a five year penalty here, you know, and
all of a sudden it rattled to Ohio State. They
only had six seconds left, but it happened on this
play with the incompletion to Smith.
Speaker 9 (21:38):
That was a great game.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
They'll call it, oh it was. It was one of
the one of the best football games.
Speaker 1 (21:43):
I mean, Saturday, Colorado Kansas State was good.
Speaker 8 (21:47):
Good by the way Texas Georgia this week in as
you do.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
I don't think George's offense. I think they've lost too
many great players, brock Bowers, too many good receivers. I
don't think their offense of lines very good.
Speaker 9 (22:00):
That you don't put them in the category with Ohio
State and Oregon.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
Right, it's pretty clear top three Jexas, Texas, Ohio State, Oregon, Oregon.
Speaker 9 (22:10):
I don't think Penn State's in that group.
Speaker 4 (22:11):
I know.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
I think Penn States and the Alabama Georgia group.
Speaker 8 (22:15):
Yeah, the next tier if you will us in that
in that Oh god, no, you see Iowa.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
We both had Iowa to beat Washington. We both spanked him. Yeah,
I think it's like forty two pointers. I know, shocker,
j Mack with the news.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
Well, that's the news, and thanks for stopping by The
Herd Line news.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
That was as good as Saturday is you're going to get.
It was so good. H If you didn't catch our
Herd hierarchy, we have that and we'll get you updated
on the very latest breaking news in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
Live in Los Angeles. H's the Herd.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and neon Easter. There not a em Pacific all.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
Sorts of NFL stuff happening today. If you've not heard,
Amari Cooper traded from Cleveland to the Buffettle Bills. They
need a number one wide receiver. Their number one talent
right now is a rookie. So that's good for Josh
Allen low drama Amari Cooper. The Jets have traded for
Aaron Rodgers Buddy Davonte Adams, So those two teams, Jets
(23:14):
build same division, cold weather, get receivers who probably out
of their prime but still can be very very productive.
We also know that Russell Wilson today apparently is they're
battling for quarterback one Justin Fields and Russell Wilson. And
here's Tomlin on that position.
Speaker 7 (23:36):
Our schedule to work tomorrow and we'll just walk it
day by day. Russ proved his health last week, man,
and we're looking hard at it this week. It is
up for consideration. We got a player with talent who
hadn't had an opportunity to play, so we're going to
potentially explore those things. Sometimes it doesn't necessarily have anything
to do with what Justin has done or has not done.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
What's that?
Speaker 1 (23:56):
What's that sound like to you? That sounds like we've
got a we've got a without change coming. We're not
real happy.
Speaker 8 (24:02):
Sounds like I made a promise to Russ when we
signed him, and now he's healthy, we.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
Got to get him.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
Is that what the inner web saying?
Speaker 8 (24:08):
That's my guess. I haven't seen the internet. I haven't
seen the Jabroni's online yet.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
Okay, yeah, I mean I think either quarterback, you're limited.
I think Justin's younger, cheaper, better athlete. Russell's got more experience,
probably better in the pocket.
Speaker 8 (24:23):
What time out was he better in the pocket with
Sean Payton and Denver or that hacking.
Speaker 1 (24:29):
I didn't say great in the pocket, I said better
than Justin fields. It is interesting, though, the quality of
quarterbacks in the league right now. I mean we have
two in the last two years c J Stroud, Caleb Williams,
jad and Daniels. We have three stars, like three new stars.
So all of a sudden you start, I mean suddenly,
Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers don't quite match up. Now,
(24:51):
Aaron's a prety your thrower the football. Russell moves better.
But like I look at Dak Prescott today, Jade and Daniels,
Caleb Williams, Dak Prescott, he is not close to his
athletics either. He doesn't throw as well, I don't think
as Jaden, and he doesn't move nearly as well as Caleb.
Speaker 9 (25:07):
And that's why when we do these quarterback who's better?
How would you rank them?
Speaker 8 (25:11):
If we could just limit it to this year, forget
everything else, Like it's unequivocal. There's like a massive changing
of the guard happening in the league right now. Oh
tell you, like it's not even some of these guys
are falling off.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
You know, if you know who for the price tag,
Baker Mayfield for the price tag, is a hell of
a quarterback. Yeah, I can pay half of what I'm
paying back he moves better than Dak right now.
Speaker 8 (25:31):
It's only he's got a better arm than Dak. Small
sample size, but he's definitely been better this year than
It's not even close, well better than Trevor Lawrence, Dak Prescott.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
And Baker has a run game.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
I mean Tampa's roster Jason Klyt does a great job
Tampa's roster offensively. I mean Baker and Chris Godwin when
they're connecting, they complete eighty two percent of their throws.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
They have three running backs.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
So Baker with a run game and Dak without one,
Baker's absolutely the better quarterback this year than Dak. And
you can say, well, it's a run game, okay, whatever,
that's the reality. Baker right now is a better quarterback
on Sunday than Dak, no question.
Speaker 9 (26:08):
Now here's the other thing. Like, Baker right now is
better than Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
I'm sorry, he throws a better.
Speaker 8 (26:14):
Imagine if Baker had vomited all over himself on the
final drives two weeks in a row throwing interception, you.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
Bail, it mean crucifying him.
Speaker 9 (26:20):
Everybody was crossing him.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
People don't understand. I watched a throw this weekend by
Baker Mayfield and it was only like twelve yards. Baker's
gotten his arm was good. It's gotten stronger. I don't
know what Baker's done. His arm's gotten stronger. He made
like a twelve yard sideline throw and I was like that,
that's my hall. It was a rope. So yeah, I
mean it's guys. You know, it's funny about this. If
(26:44):
if you just looked at Aaron's numbers after last night
the staff was posting numbers, If you just looked at
Aaron's numbers blind resume, he's like a less athletic. He's
a less accurate version of guys like g.
Speaker 9 (27:00):
O Smith, dere Ak Carr.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
Yes, I mean he's the same quarterback.
Speaker 9 (27:03):
Here's a pop quiz for you.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
It does show you.
Speaker 1 (27:06):
It's like when you get a hit movie, you become
a movie star and you're allowed to have bomb after
bomb after bomb. Kevin Costner's had some misses, some big misses,
but he's had hits, so he's a movie star. And
I mean a lot of guys can't get five minutes
with a studio head that. I have never had a bomb,
but I've never had a hit. So once you get
like Aaron's got a ring, and Aaron's a pretty thrower,
(27:28):
and he's smart at the podium. You know, people, I
mean he's running the franchise right now, he's running the Jets.
Speaker 9 (27:34):
I don't know that that's a good thing.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
Pop quiz for you.
Speaker 9 (27:36):
Who's the last just quarterback to throw for three hundred
yards in a game?
Speaker 1 (27:40):
Hold on, let me think about this, Darnold.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
Zach Wilson, Zach Wilson.
Speaker 9 (27:50):
Aaron Rodgers hasn't done it yet this year.
Speaker 8 (27:53):
Like three hundred yards is like a new baseline, right,
Like three hundred yards that's like a good game. Yeah,
but keep telling me he's real good at But I
mean think about keep telling me how great Aaron Rodgers is.
Speaker 1 (28:02):
If you were a fan and Derek Carr had a
chance to beat Denver, couldn't beat Denver at homebo Nicks,
and then you played terribly against Minnesota, and then last
night you had a pick at the end and you
criticized Mike william and you were Derek Carr, people would
be like, get him out of town. What did they
do for Aaron Rodgers? They got him Devonte Adams. So
(28:23):
he's I mean, Aaron is now living a lot off reputation.
The restaurant you used to go to, it's got a
big name. You go to it and you're like, yeah,
the menu is not as good.
Speaker 3 (28:32):
The chef left.
Speaker 1 (28:33):
You're like, Eh, Aaron's eh. About every other game Aaron
throws up a stinker. He's beaten Will Levis and Jacoby Brissett,
that's who he's beaten.
Speaker 8 (28:42):
And the people comparing this to Lebron, I'll remind everybody
Lebron came to Los Angeles, they won a championship.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
He's also, on any given night, a top six player
in the league. Indisputably, He's not Jokic.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
We know that. We know he can't.
Speaker 8 (28:56):
Score like a He's an excellent Rodger is not sniffing
all Pro, not even close, not even in the discussion
like he's not. Now I'm coming off as like a hater,
but he's just not been great this year. Colin.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
In the AFC, name the best quarterbacks mahomes Lamar, Josh Stroud, Stroud,
that's the top four Burrow Burrow, So he's not top
five in the AFC. And by the way, I would
take Herbert over him. Yes, that's six. Everybody in the
NFL would take Herbert over him at best E seven
(29:32):
and statistically two is better when he has Mike McDaniels
and those weapons.
Speaker 8 (29:36):
But I don't have the reputation. I mean, Colin, you
gotta win a game. This is not hyper hyperbole. If
you gotta win a game tomorrow, who do you trust more?
Speaker 9 (29:45):
Right now?
Speaker 2 (29:46):
Joe Flacco or Aaron Rodgers? Don't laugh, I mean.
Speaker 1 (29:51):
You're asking me right now? Baker mayfielder Aaron. I would
take Baker, yeah, no question.
Speaker 9 (29:57):
Would you go Flacco?
Speaker 3 (29:58):
Probably not?
Speaker 9 (30:00):
Okay, I'm just telling you. Joe Flacco starts this week.
The Colts got a shot. If it's Anthony Richardson, I
can better gets to Anthony Richardson.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
Flacko's good.
Speaker 9 (30:08):
Aaron Rodgers just hasn't been great.
Speaker 1 (30:10):
Nick right earlier today on the DeVante Adams trade to
the Jets via the Raiders and if it, what's the
outlook the rest of the way.
Speaker 12 (30:20):
Twenty four days ago, Aaron Rodgers told the media the
next step for us is to learn expect to win
and learn to dominate. Since then, they lost to Bo
Nicks and the Broncos and were held in single digits. Roger,
they lost, they were down seventeen to nothing, lost to
(30:40):
the Vikings, fired their coach, blew a game to Buffalo Panic,
traded for Davonte Adams. This is a bad team. So
do I think DeVante Adams will help a little bit?
Speaker 1 (30:51):
I do.
Speaker 12 (30:52):
Do I think that is enough to turn the Jets,
who look like a six win team, and do more
than a seven team?
Speaker 3 (31:01):
No, I don't.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
Okay, So I gave you the schedule earlier. They're two
and four. I think they're gonna win seven more games.
And I pointed out the Jets schedule the games in
which I think they'll win. I'm and I'm I think
I'm judicious with it. I don't have them. I don't
think they'll beat I mean, so I told you I
think they'll beat the Steelers making a quarterback change and
Drake May. Now they're on the road for both. But
(31:24):
I think they'll be four and four through eight games.
They should beat Houston short week at home. They should,
but I'll I won't even give you that one, nor
will I give you at Arizona, a very inconsistent team.
On any given Sunday, Arizona can beat the Niners, which
they recently did as a road team, they'll beat Anthony Richardson,
(31:45):
Gino Smith, Trevor Lawrence, Matt Stafford, and New York and
they will beat two in the final game. I don't
think they're gonna beat Houston, Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Or at Miami.
Speaker 1 (31:59):
Arizona's a go either way. They beat Arizona, They're a
ten win team. And I it's that negative or pausey,
I think that's right along the line. I don't think
I'm crazy.
Speaker 9 (32:09):
Let me, let's just focus on Pittsburgh this week real quick.
So TJ. Watt is arguably the best pass rusher in
the league.
Speaker 8 (32:15):
Yeah, the Jets tackles have had their problems with Tyron
Smith at a rough night last night. We know Pittsburgh
wants to run the football, smash mouth. Jets struggle against
the run.
Speaker 9 (32:26):
Are you surprised the Jets are favored here in this game?
Speaker 1 (32:30):
No, again the Jet. The Jets went toe to toe
with a really solid Buffalo team and if not for
Taylor rap blow, you know, dislodging the ball to Garrett Wilson,
they would have had a twenty seven to twenty lead
and probably win that game.
Speaker 9 (32:46):
Pittsburgh has a pretty good safety in Mena Fitzpatrick too.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
I mean, but I think Buffalo is better than Pittsburgh.
Speaker 8 (32:53):
Okay, I mean Buffalo plugged in a random dude named
Ray Davis at running back and he went for like
one hundred and fifty yards of total offense.
Speaker 3 (32:59):
Like fire, Sol of the.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
Defense isn't as good. That was predictable. There's tomorrow, my friend,
