Speaker 1 (01:45):
What is going on? Everybody? How are we doing? What
a crazy tuesday in the old National Football League. I'm
John this three Now podcast. Hopefully everyone's having a good day.
Woke up to craziness. DeVante Adams traded. I guess that

(02:05):
was already awake when it happened. But when the news
broke about seven Pacific standard time, so maybe about ten o'clock.
But he had already been there, so this was something
in motion. So some thoughts on the Jets and the
spending spree, and yeah, two and four making big trades.

(02:28):
Then on the flip side, the Bills, who are four
and two have been the playoffs year after year with
a star quarterback in his prime, also make a trade
for Amari Cooper who's now been traded countless times. Raiders
traded in with the Cowboys, Cowboys traded in with the Browns,
on the Browns trading with the Bills. So nice little
addition there. With the Bills, we also had Tom Brady,

(02:52):
who is officially a minority owner with the Las Vegas Raiders.
I would imagine if you told Al Davis that the
night they were getting on the plane to fly home
after the Tuck rule, he probably wouldn't have believed you.
But I think there is a light at the end
of the tunnel because things can't get much worse in Raiderland.

(03:16):
So the impact Tom could potentially have to help Mark
Davis out, who clearly needs some positive influence in terms
of people that he leans on for help in making decisions.
So Tom Brady now with the Raiders, I didn't do
the penthouse and outhouse for the league. My penthouse and

(03:36):
outhouse yesterday, so we'll dive into that as well as
cough on campus something we'd like to do every Wednesday,
just kind of fly around college football, hit on a
few things. Bama plays Tennessee, Georgia plays Texas, a couple
of big games this weekend, so that's exciting. And we'll

(03:57):
also do a mailbang at John Middlecoppin is of the

a lot of contents up there. I did an instant
reaction video to when DeVante was traded at earlier on

(04:20):

check that out. But before we dive into football, you know,

(05:31):
I think they're just fantastic theater. The intensity of the crowds,
the bright lights, all the star players, and baseball is
always acted as a sport where you could just buy
an individual player, right if you just want to or
trade for one, you name it, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson,
Juan Soto. I mean, just look around the guys, right,

(05:55):
now that are playing in the playoffs, you can get
a premium player John Carlos Stanton and just insert him.
It's literally plug and play. When I was a kid,
the one of my favorite sporting moments the Giant sign
Barry Bonds change the franchise. It is the easiest sport
to buy a great player and just put him. He

(06:18):
just goes to left field. He just becomes my ace.
I just put him at catcher. I bat him third,
I bat him a lead off whatever, Mookie Betts right,
Shoho Tani. Chemistry does not matter. There is no schemes.
You get up there, you try to hit the fucking
ball hard. You're on the mound, you try to mow
guys down. It's very black and white. Basketball is somewhat

(06:39):
in the middle. Chemistry and cohesion matters, but if you
get enough star players who are in the prime of
their career, you can figure it out. It's not baseball,
but it's definitely not football. It's gonna be impossible to
suck if you get enough guys who can play football, though,
I would say his historically, big names become that over

(07:04):
time on the team that drafted them, and for the
most part, the best teams don't always get the best
headlines when making player acquisitions. For the last twenty years,
the team, especially in the two thousands, the team that
by far always won the offseason was the Washington Redskins

(07:26):
and Dan Snyder, and they always sucked for twenty plus years,
give or take a move here, move there. A team
that we constantly laughed at their offseason because they didn't
make headlines was the New England Patriots. They went to
nine Super Bowls and they won six of them. Football
is not Hollywood. I don't need Denzel or Leonardo DiCaprio

(07:52):
to sell my movie. I just have to win. And
I don't need to get a famous player who has
done a lot and who could be trending the wrong
way just to move the needle, because it might do
that in March or April. When you sign Tyron Smith,
who looks like he can't play anymore, great player, future

(08:14):
Hall of Famer, probably he's done. Or Mike Williams, a
guy coming off major injuries, he's already on the trading block.
But in the offseason that gets you a lot of credit.
People go look what they're doing, because at the end
of the day, my question for you always is who's
your coach and staff and who's your quarterback? And obviously

(08:38):
the coaching staff for the Jets is a major question mark.
And as they go to play this weekend against the
Pittsburgh Steelers that have Mike Tomlin and Arthur Smith, they're
at a disadvantage, just like they were Monday night against
Sean McDermott and Joe Brady. They will be at a

(08:59):
disadvantage against any team they play. Who is any good?
And today they trade for DeVante Adams and everyone's like,
oh my god, whoa, whoa, whoa. This feels like an
NBA team who is trading for older stars making headlines.
But at the end of the day, they're two and
four for a reason. They're not very good. And the

(09:23):
quarterback that all their success hinged on, at least we
thought because their defense was great, it's not anymore. Is
not the same player. And when you watch that Patriot
game on Thursday night, you're like, damn, he looks pretty good.
And then he started getting hit and he started looking
his age, which is very understandable, but this is a

(09:44):
headline that goes, oh my god, you had him with
Garrett Wilson and Breese Hall and all these other Their
offensive line is more than shaky. Aaron Rodgers. Can he
stay healthy one He can't run away when there's pressure anymore.
In this notion that Davante is just going to be

(10:05):
a plug and play because they once played with each other,
to me is pretty laughable. It's not exactly how it works.
So I don't like this move. I understand why they
did it. All their chips are in the middle of
the table. There's a desperate team that will do anything
to win now. But they're not winning now. They're literally
losing now. We don't do moral victories in the NFL.

(10:28):
That happens sometimes in college and rightfully so, if you're
a team that is not nearly as talented as the
other team and you go toe to toe with them,
you can hold your head high. Not the way it
works in the NFL. We played the Bills, you lost,
and now you're two and four going on the road
against the Pittsburgh Steelers. You notice what Mike Tomlin leaked
out today. You don't know it's him leaking it, but

(10:50):
it's out there in the ether. It's clearly coming from him.
Russell Wilson might start Russell Wilson's not gonna start, but
he's just messing with the Jets. He's forcing them to
spend extra time watching that guy. They have the advantage.
I don't think the Jets are gonna win this weekend.
I think the Jets season is going nowhere and going

(11:11):
nowhere fast. And this is the type move that makes
absolutely no sense for a two to four team. On
the flip side, a four and two team that needs
a little more explosion on offense. Who is going to
make the playoffs? Why? Because they always make the playoffs.
When Josh Allen's their quarterback, makes a smart move, they
literally make the same move. Trade a third rounder for

(11:34):
a wide receiver. I love Amari Cooper with the Bills
one because they're not depending on him just to dominate.
He just needs to open up their offense a little
bit because right now, Keon Coleman is not exactly a
separator as a reut runner. So if he can just

(11:54):
become more of a jump ball guy, red zone target,
and Amari, along with Shakis he gets healthy, can become
your reliable second and eight, third and seven type guys.
We know the running game's good. James kick James Cook
when he gets healthy. Stud and Ray Davis last night
it was like, damn, this is your backup running back.

(12:16):
The Bills are good and they're gonna continue to be
good because they're well run, and the Jets simply are not.
The Jets are doing things that Dan Snyder used to
do in two thousand and six. That's not how you
win in football. Think about some of the moves over
the last like five six years. I'll just name a few.
The Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill. Everyone's like, oh my, you

(12:38):
can't try. You can't do that. The Dolphins looking Mike
McDaniel and his cool classes haven't won shit. Meanwhile, the
Chiefs use that draft capital to help rattle off back
to back Super Bowls. The Ravens. Anyone could have had
Derrick Henry this offseason for not very much. You're like, hey, Derek,

(13:01):
we'll give you two years, sixteen million, seven million dollars
signing bonus. Yeah, yeah, I'm in leads the league in rushing,
has eight touchdowns. Think about Tampa most moves, and I'd
add Derek Henry is actually on the more headlining move,
but his money does not dictate that. Think about Tampa

(13:21):
Bay Buccaneers, who are foreign to who last year not
only won the division, won a playoff game and had
a pretty good show against the Detroit Lions, who were
clearly good. They got Baker Mayfield last year for four
million dollars. That was not a sexy headline when they
signed him. Baker Mayfield has obviously changed their franchise. It
currently leads the league in touchdown passes. Think about the

(13:43):
Lions when they traded Matt Stafford to the Rams. I'm
guilty this too. Wait, you want Jared Goff? Jared Goff?
Three years later, he's easily one of the best quarterbacks
in the NFC and been just a consistent guy and
reliable player for them and help resurrect their franchise. Look

(14:05):
at the forty nine Ers who have been to three
straight NFC Championship games, who just went to the Super Bowl.
They've been relying on brock Purty one. No one set
a peep when brock Purty was drafted at mister irrelevant
and let's face it, and I was guilty too. The
moment they had to play him, everyone thought their season
was over. And still two and a half years later,

(14:27):
after he's proven he's easily one of the better quarterbacks
in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (14:30):
People are like, a it still sucks, but it's like
Dvaute Adams to the Jets.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
Is not gonna work. It reminds me so much of
the Lakers, because Aaron Rodgers is now Lebron and Woody
Johnson a lot like Jeanie Buss rich kids. Now they're
both old, but they were born into wealth. They were
born into this great life and they were you know,
wood he technically bought the team, but it was with
his family's money. It's like he fucking heard it and

(14:56):
Jeanie was handed it when his dad died. They have
no clue what they're doing owners. They're completely there are
people you bet against. Now. Genie got a little lucky
that Lebron was interested in moving to La had nothing
to do with her or the franchise. And then they
listen to everything he wants to do. Want to draft
my kid and he's gonna play. Okay, we'll do it.

(15:17):
Think about all the things Aaron Rodgers have dictated the
headlines of, like oh, they just traded for a son
Reddick who now is back on the trading block. So
the Bills don't do sexy things. They trade dicks. How
can you trade because we will and we'll win eleven
twelve games, no problem, and if we have to, we'll
do what good teams do at a player like Amari

(15:38):
Cooper during the season for a third round pick. So
I think you saw last night the Bills are the
better team. I mean, if you watch that game and
your takeaway is anything else, I can't help you. Now.
The Jets aren't terrible. I'm not acting like the Jets
are gonna win three or four games. But that's not
a good football team and they haven't been a good

(15:58):
football team for a long time. Speaking of another team,
that's a terrible football team. But I commend them for
doing this, trading DeVante Adams. Now, before I get into
Tom Brady overall, I believe the Vegas Raiders should knock
this bad boy down to the Studs. I'd knuke at all.

(16:19):
Every single player would be on the trade block. Think
about the division you're in. You have a current dynasty
going with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. You have Jim
Harbaugh who just showed up with the Chargers. Who gets
to inherit justin Herbert. You're never beating them, and we
just saw the Denver Broncos play you now that Seohn
Payton has gotten rid of Russell Wilson, and kick the

(16:40):
livid crap out of you. You are not only clearly
the fourth team in your division, you have no hope
in sight because you have no quarterback. You have no
business with any of these guys. You're not even remotely
close to being a step away from trying to get
close to like the third place team. So to me,

(17:00):
Coldon Miller, Max Croft, how many first round picks can
you get right now? Hey, Detroit saw you just had
a major injury. How about two ones for Max Crosby?
You want to dance, We're ready. How many teams need
left tackles? Coldon Miller's on the block, give me a buzz.
The Raiders probably won't do that, but they should now.

(17:22):
The good thing is, and I want to be positive
here when it comes to the Raiders, because it's been
a really, really rough multiple decades and it continues to
be as we've watched them play this year. Well, not
everyone watches them, obviously, Raider fans are forced to because
that's what football fans do. They watch their team win, loser, draw,

(17:42):
and you guys just lose a lot. A big part
of losing is directly connected with Mark Davis, and Mark
Davis relies on a lot of people that are way
older than him and are connected to like the seventies
and eighties Raiders and the advice they consistently give them.
I think, I think is fair to say has not
worked very well. He doesn't have close confidants who know

(18:06):
what they're doing in his life. And now when Tom
Brady buys a minority stake, and let's face it, anyone
telling Reggie what to do or excuse me not Mark
Davis what to do, like once upon a time some
of the ron wolf and some of these people gave
him Reggie McKenzie. Everyone has an agenda, everyone wants, has

(18:32):
an angle to what they're telling him. Well, now when
he gets in bed with Tom Brady as a business partner,
they're on the same page. They both have the same goal,
like they are financially invested in the Raiders winning. So
when ron Wolfe says hire Reggie McKenzie, yeah, makes him

(18:53):
look good because that was a packer guy. Makes that
whole crew of executives look like they're just pawn and
people off to be gms. Tom Brady doesn't care. Like
Tom Brady, just the Raiders win, the team goes up
in value. He one day can own the thing and
it goes well. So to me, now he has a guy.

(19:14):
Now I'm not saying Tom Brady has all the answers.
He's only been a player. He's never been a coach
or an executive. But he can give a very very
unique perspective of being with the team that did things
the right way and obviously knows how to win and
build the team at the highest level. So Mark Davis

(19:34):
now has a guy who has the same incentive as him.
When the Raiders win, they both financially benefit, not some
agenda of like I'm not financially invested in this, but
if you hire my guy and I'll keep my fingers
crossed it works. Makes me look good. Those days are over.
But this is how we would have done in the seventies.
It's twenty twenty fucking four. So I think adding Tom

(19:57):
Brady as an owner. I don't know if it's gonna work,
but what has been happening hasn't only not worked, it's
been a disaster. So I think the number two person
to benefit the most. Mark Davis definitely benefits the most
because now he just has someone real, credible and has
recently been invested into the NFL especially. I think what

(20:20):
benefits Tom is also going to the Tampa Bay Bucks
seeing something a little different is the Raider fan because
it's just it doesn't get any worse. It really doesn't.
A couple of years ago, you trade for DeVante, it
was cool. I'm not gonna lie. When I saw the
Adam Schefter tweet, I'm like, this is badass. And then
it completely fails. He had some stats at a couple

(20:42):
hundred yard or one hundred reception years, but it meant nothing.
The team just stunk. They were completely irrelevant. And it
doesn't seem whoever is hired as head coach, any general manager,
any player traded for or traded away from the team,
nothing ever works. And at least now with Tom and
even Richard Seymour that Mark can just get some people

(21:05):
to have conversations. They just have the same exact agenda
as him. What do we need to do to try
to win on Sundays? And I would say this, Tom
Telesco and Antonio Pierce have to be in a little trouble.
I'm not saying they're gonna get fired this year, but like,
do you feel good as a fan or if you're
Mark Davis with that combo against the people you have
to beat in your division, how can you? How can you? So?

(21:30):
I think changes for the Raiders buckle up. I'm not
saying they're gonna trade everybody, but if you're Tom Brady,
that would be my number one piece of advice. Okay,
little penhouse, out house. Starting with the penhouse, we know

(21:52):
the Chiefs are in that every single week win, looser draw.
The Ravens have clearly thrown their hat in the ring.
I think those are currently the two best teams we'll see.
I mean, the Chiefs have a good game this weekend
against against the forty nine ers, who they've kind of owned.
But the Chiefs can lose and still maintain their spot. Houston.
Listen to someone that liked them eight to one to

(22:13):
be the number one overall seed. They have not looked
quite as good, especially on offense. You know when they
ran the ball early in the season, they were just
so balanced. Obviously Collins getting hurt, but they're gonna have
a really good record and they're gonna win a ton
of games, especially because of their division. So this is
a team that I still feel pretty good about with

(22:34):
that eight to one bet. Not necessarily the team that
I've watched play, but like they played the Jets in
a couple weeks. I like the Texans, you know, so
you look at the Texas schedule, We're like, I like
them in a lot of games they're playing even when
they're not playing like a ball, they can play their
C C plus game and they've been winning games. So
the Texans are definitely in there. And when you watch

(22:56):
the Bills last night, Yeadamari Cooper like when the dust settles.
To me, it would be very, very shocking if the
final four obviously the two best teams in the AFC
Chiefs and the Ravens, but I think the Texans and
the Bills. I think if one of those two teams
is not in the Final four, it would feel like
a devastating year for Demico or Sean McDermott. The NFC,

(23:20):
you know, the AFC or the NFC North is a
division you just quickly look at. Minnesota has not lost
a game. They were just on a buy. We know
how good the Lions have looked. You know, it's pretty
devastating losing Aiden Hutchinson, but we have seen teams lose
great defenders and still make Super Bowl runs, still make
playoff runs. I think they will be aggressive to add

(23:41):
someone again. I will say this over and over Max
Crosby two ones who says no, I think Green Bay
is really good too, And I actually think they benefit
from not winning the division because the way they play,
like it's much better for them to go on the
road to Levice Stadium in a game that's gonna be

(24:01):
sixty eight degrees, or go on the road in the
first or second round to Minnesota in a dome like
that benefits them because of their team speed. It's gonna
be really interesting as all these teams play each other. Minnesota,
Detroit play each other this weekend. Obviously the Bears, who
I can't put in yet now if they beat some
of these teams, like, I got no problem putting them in,

(24:23):
but I want to see. I'm not saying Bears fans
shouldn't be excited. The last two weeks shouldn't be awesome.
They would be incredible. You were never having those performances
with Justin Fields. But for me, to take you seriously
as like an NFC contender or even a team that
could make the playoffs. Guys, see play the good teams
and if you beat if you honestly, if you just

(24:43):
go two and four in your division, you're gonna be
in pretty good shape when I look at your schedule.
So I think I put those three teams in, and
to me, San Francisco a couple freak losses. They should
be five and one, but they lost the games, and
then you watch them last week against Seattle, It's like, okay,
can you guys get your shit together now? I'm not
putting them in quite yet, but you play the Chiefs

(25:03):
at home, like it's kind of time to get the
monkey off your back. I think the outhouse the NFC.
To me, it's just Carolina, and honestly, they have been
much more competitive with Andy Dalton. So you look at
most of the NFC teams, even the bad ones, like
the Giants, they're not that bad, Like the Cardinals can't

(25:25):
get worked as they just did against Green Bay, but
they also can look really good. The Rams like they're
not an outhouse team that they're a team with a
million injuries. We know when they're healthy, they're pretty solid.
So I actually think the NFC top to bottom is
better than the AFC because there are some teams in
the AFC that are terrible. I mean, the Jags could
get lose by twenty points to literally anybody. Their defense

(25:48):
is atrocious, their offense is all out of whack. The
Patriots are even worse than the Jags. They're god awful.
And I know he threw some touchdowns in the second
half and it was cool, and if I'm a Patriot,
I'm not putting it in context. Well, it's like second
half or getting who cares. Just give me a couple
of touchdowns on a weekly basis, keep losing, give us

(26:08):
a high pick and we trade it for hopefully a
haul and we try to build around Drake May. And
then the Browns, I mean, it's pretty clear that they're
gonna roll with Deshaun Watson because of the money, and
they're gonna continue to suck because when you cannot score
on offense, I don't care one. Their defense clearly isn't

(26:29):
as good as last year, but even if it is good,
you can't hold serve every single game. Eventually a crack one.
You get worn out because your offense is so quick
to get off the field. Deshaun I thought that was
actually one of his better games. Made some big completions
on third down, but overall, like all the stats speak
for themselves, he's just an atrocious player. He runs into

(26:51):
a bunch of sacks. I can't even imagine the amount
of guys they're gonna start turning on him, and not
even because they personally hate the guy, but but they're injured,
they're playing their ass off, they're solid players, and you
got this guy who should be benched and it's not
being benched. And I think it shows the Browns know
they suck and they're just gonna go down with the ship.
Trading to Maury Cooper today is a good example of that.

(27:13):
So I feel for you Browns fans because it's I
think the years got a long way to go. A
lot more bad football, you know, coming down the train tracks. Okay,
let's do a little cough on campus. I love college football.
After the red River game, just sweaty and just disgusting,

(27:36):
I was like, let's just go to a bar, eat
a little dinner. Watch the second half of the Oregon
Ohio State game. The Texas or the Tennessee Florida game.
What other game was going ole Miss LSU. There was
a lot of good college football action. So we went
to this place called Katie Trail, which was just a
badass bar, had really good barbecue food. I think it's

(27:57):
in Uptown Dallas, probably ten minutes away from where we
were staying, and it was really cool, and there's there's
nothing like that college atmosphere that that was on full
display at the game I was at. Obviously, Oklahoma's not
very good, but Texas really is their team. Watching them live,

(28:17):
one where they warmed up was we were pretty close.
The size of some of their linemen was pretty eye opening. Obviously,
their offensive line is really good. They have some serious
difference makers on the defensive front and linebacker. They have
multiple wide receivers who are clearly NFL guys. Their running
back is a stud. My only question for them is quarterback,

(28:41):
and the good thing for them is, like every contender
has a question mark at quarterback. Will Howard actually played
pretty good against Oregon, so if he's going to play
like that, they definitely can win the National championship. But
you know, Oregon, Dylan Gabriel solid player, but I don't
think there's much of a difference between quinn u ors
and all though it's not like one team has you know,

(29:02):
the equivalent of like what Baker Mayfield was in college,
or or you know, something like super super high end.
I don't think when yours, in my opinion, is a
high pick, but things can change if he plays well.
I'd be hard pressed to see Texas losing a game
just because now it's like I've seen Ohio State live,

(29:24):
but that sure looked like a national championship team to me.
It's just comes down at the quarterback, who was clearly
a little rus rusty coming off an injury through a
bad interception. To me, he's just a little hit or
miss throwing down the field. But the great part with
the talent they have is like you can throw like
you know, jail break screens and guys can take it
forty You can just run the ball and a dude

(29:46):
can take it fifty yards. I mean, they just got
game changing players. And the thing with Sark is, like
we've known for a while, he's good on an offense,
he can really score points. It was defense. Their defense
was just really shitty. Well defense good, They average under
allowing under ten points a game, like their defense is
top notch. So I was blown away. And if I'm

(30:10):
a Texas fan like Ohio State fan and I think
now you're Oregon fan, I think anything less than being
in the National Championship game would feel like a disappointment.
It really would, definitely for Ohio State. In Texas, you
could probably like if Oregon were to lose to Ohio
State in the Big Ten Championship and win a playoff

(30:32):
game and get to the final four, like lose to
Texas in a barn burner, it'd be a pretty fun year.
Like I'm not gonna act like that would be a
huge letdown. It would suck at the time. But I
think anything less than a natty for Texas in Ohio State,
which I would imagine most people would put in the
National Championship game right now, we'll just feel like a disappointment.

(30:55):
And you know, this weekend you get Georgia at Texas.
I would expect Texas to win this game by ten
plus points. I just don't think George is that good
and this place is gonna be going bananas in Austin,
So I think George is in major, major trouble and
the other game is Bama at Tennessee. And you know

(31:20):
three weeks ago? Was it three weeks ago? It was
two weeks ago? Did Bama lost to Vandy and Tennessee
lost to Arkansas? Now I think Arkansas is better than Vandy.
Now it turns out Vandy might actually be pretty solid.
But I have a hard time, like I couldn't like,
I understand losing to Vandy and then losing. I didn't lose,

(31:42):
but I was. I got such bad service at the
Cotton Bowl. I couldn't even I couldn't even get my
ESPN APT to work to see the score. So I
didn't know what happened in that Bama South Carolina game
until we got to the bar. But obviously I liked
them a lot in a bounce back spot. But I'm
very nervous with this transfer portal, Like this isn't twenty

(32:05):
seventeen where these great teams after an awful loss come
back and kick ass. So I don't know, I mean
to me, it is a coin flip game. It's weird
though that Georgia, who Bama beat Georgia like we saw
them play? So then you lose the Vanderbilt and Georgia
jumps you in the rankings. I don't quite understand that one.

(32:28):
If you tell me Bama had lost South Carolina, I
would understand putting them above there. But they played And
whenever I hear people say like it shouldn't there's more
to it than just head to head. No, we literally
fucking saw them on the same field playing each other.
That's the whole point of the sport. I play you
who wins, right, like who's better? It's like who's better
at tennis? Well, we both grab rackets, we go to

(32:49):
the tennis court, we play the game. Someone wins, You're
better than me right on that given day. Now you
can say over the course of the season, well, we've
only had two weeks since, so if you tell me,
over like an eight week span, Bama consistently looks as bad. Okay,
But like what happens if Bama wins this game and

(33:09):
Georgia wins this game, you'd be like, Okay, incredible win
at Texas, pretty good to win in Tennessee too, And
I would imagine in the polls, like would Georgia still
be above Bama? Kind of confuses me. Dan Lanning basically
confirmed that they put the twelve men on the field
on purpose at the end of the game to take

(33:30):
away the big play run off some time, which inevitably
led to Howard just pulling a Dak Prescott and sliding
with no time left in the middle of the football field.
Pretty big moment for Dan Lanning, like that that game
was gonna be I gotta go back because I miss
so much of it in transit and you're at a bar,
you can't really lock in. There's like ten games going

(33:52):
on at one time. Actually might do that this afternoon,
just throw it up on YouTube, see if they have
like a condensed version. Is whoever was gonna win that game?
It was gonna be a huge moment for their career,
right It's not the end all be all, And so
many people are like everyone, get off Ryan Day. Look
at his record. Okay, he beats the crap out of

(34:15):
a lot of bad teams, Like the majority of teams
he plays are just not very good. Like the beating
the Wisconsins and the Purdues and the Minnesotas. You get
no credit for that. Beating. Penn State recently honestly hasn't
been that impressive either. Their offense is putrid. Now if
you beat Penn State this year. I'll tip my hat

(34:36):
to you. They're clearly a lot better. But I've seen
you play Michigan in the last several years. Yeah, Kurbstone,
and the record in these games against highly ranked opponents
is not great. And you can tell me what he's
doing the right things. No one's disputing he doesn't have
a good team, like he's full of NFL players, But

(34:57):
the whole point of playing the big games is like
and you win them. So it's like, yeah, Debor fucked
up against Vandy, No one can argue that. But he
also played Kirby the week before and was up twenty
eight to nothing and found a way in a craziness
in the way the second half to win the game. Like,
that's that's the goal here. Dan Lanning, like Ryan Day,

(35:23):
hadn't won that many big games either, Right. He lost
to Washington three times. He lost to him twice in
the regular season, once in the Pac twelve championship. So
that was a big moment for him, And that was
a coin flip game and he found a way to
win it. But I said this to Colin. We talked
so much about this, and football coaches love doing this

(35:43):
it's about the process, the process, the process, Well, yeah,
what's your result? Like I'm interested in Saban's process or
Andy Reid's process, why because it results in wins? Like
Ryan Day's process, Well yeah, it's process against Purdue or
Minnesota have way better players and beat the shit out

(36:05):
of them. What happens when you play Michigan or Oregon?
You be like, what's on the road. I get it.
I'm not acting like it's an easy place to play,
but like, are you gonna win one of these? Because everyone,
I think any defender of Ryan Day would say, yeah,
inevitably he will. Well maybe obviously he'll beat Michigan this year.

(36:29):
Thumbs up there, buddy, that's gonna be a tough one.
I just think that, you know, in these big moments
like Dan Lanning throw a curveball in that game that
like a Ryan Day and Chip Kelly throwing that. Like
I saw their moment two offensive guys and their quarterback
fucking fell on the field. Was zero seconds left, Like
that happened. Meanwhile, Dan Lanning, defensive guy is doing like

(36:52):
Belichick Vabel moves out, scheming you, out thinking you. So
like that was a huge moment for one of those
two guys, and it was turned out to be Dan Lanning,
not Ryan Day, and no one, and I mean no
one has more defenders than Ryan Day. It's crazy. A

(37:13):
couple other things, the Boys sake running back Austin Genty,
He's not gonna win the Heisman. He could run for
seventh out the Heisman Committee, they wouldn't give the trophy
to someone at a school like Boise State. They would
cancel the trophy. He might be the best player in

(37:36):
college football pound for pound, he has no chance to
win it. He really doesn't. And you could argue that's sad.
It's reflective of like, what's the whole point of this
if we're not giving you to the best player? Travis
Hunter even to get it at Colorado basically had to
play ninety snaps a game. Boisse Sak guy's not getting it,

(37:57):
which to me, I agree with anyone listening like it's
kind of stupid, but they're they're not doing that. And
last but not least, Cam Rising, I was watching on
what was it Friday night at the hotel we got
into Dallas and we're just gonna go to bed early,
and I was watching some of the utiers on a
State game, and that was that, you know, kind of

(38:18):
legendary postgame interview of Kenny Dillingham, the Arizona State coach
who gets a huge upset Arizona State's actually not bad
at all this year. He's being interviewed on the field
and just you know, he's in Arizona State alumni. He
didn't play there, he was just a student, and he
starts jumping up and down with all the students and

(38:39):
then he just disappears into the night. It was an
incredible moment. It was also I fell asleep before like
the fourth quarter, but in the first half. At one
point in time, I remember Utah was on, you know,
on offense, and they flashed Rising's numbers. He was like
two for nine with a pick. He looked atrocious. I
mean it was crazy. Now, Utah's backup quarterback who's also

(39:03):
started games when Rising was out. I think his first
name is Isaac, but it's Zach Wilson's brother. He kind
of looks like him. He wears the karate kid thing
on his head. We called Zach Wilson the karate kid.
That's what Maria called him. So I just give his
whole family because they all rock that kind of the
bandana and who's not very good either or definitely wasn't

(39:25):
good in his previous starts. That's a little different when
you're coming off the bench. But I saw today the
headline that Cam Rising, technically he has a season ending injury,
could come back for an eighth year. If I'm Kyle Whittingham,
if I just got good quarterback play this year, I'm
probably undefeated. Like I'm a really good team. Cam Rising

(39:46):
cannot stay healthy. Under no circumstances can I allow him
to do whatever it would be considered the Red Shirts.
It's over, Like, hey man, we appreciate everything you've done.
If it wasn't for the injuries, you would have been
one of the better quarterbacks here in the history of
the program. But this thing's over. Honestly, the couple drives

(40:06):
I saw before I fell asleep, the thing that kept
I thought it was borderline insane that they left him
in the game for like you have no It looked
like me out there, you were just not gonna beat
this team who clearly is in some shitty pushover anymore.
And they lost and Arizona State rushed the field. Pretty

(40:27):
cool moment, Okay, Middlecoff Mailbag time at John Middlecoff Instagram.
Fire in those dms, get your question answered here on
the show, we will start with Douglas. This question is

(40:50):
for the mail bag. As a lifelong Colts fan, I
find myself more and more confused by Chris Ballard. While
there are times he hits home runs on some late
round picks, it's also true that we haven't won our
division in years and have been a middle of the
road team. If the Colts missed the playoffs again this year,

(41:13):
is it time to move on? That's a good question. Listen.
Most people I know like Chris Ballard. I think he's
pretty solid. I was reading some article today when I
was eating a sandwich at lunch. It was on the Athletic.
It might have been Mike Sando's kind of breakdown. Anthony

(41:35):
Richardson has missed fifteen of the possible twenty three games
of his career. Of all the things that happened, Listen,
they tried to patch work the quarterback position for years.
It didn't work. I commend them for taking a big swing,
but it's been kind of a disaster. Not even that

(41:58):
his erratic play this year, but he doesn't play in games.
I mean, thank God for Joe Flacam. I don't know, man,
I think hiring change Stikeen, you're gonna fire Ballard? You're not,
because you wouldn't fire Stiking and then bring in a GM.
Does he get to hire the guy? How would that work?

(42:19):
I think he just kind of ride it out with
these two guys for a couple of years. I hear
what you're saying, though, It's gotta be frustrating because he's
He's definitely well liked in the media, so he has
a lot of support, but eventually either win or lose games.
And the Anthony Richard when I saw that stat, I

(42:40):
mean it makes sense, right, he only played in a
couple of games last year, shoulder out for the year
this year, I mean, gets hurt early on has just
been mia now for three weeks. That could be the
downfall now, luckily, like what if you just start Flacco? Like,
here's the thing, are they better her off rolling with

(43:01):
Flacco this year and just not putting Richardson back in
and trying to win nine ten games? Like? Are they more?
Are there chances better to win ten games? If Joe
Flacco starts the rest of the season or Anthony Rigson.
It feels like Flacco because he's just a better player.

(43:21):
I watched last night. I was cleaning up the kitchen,
No big deal. That's what I do mainly because I
don't cook that often, so she cookes, I clean and
I sometimes put on a podcast or something. She goes
in the other room and just go to town clean away.
And I saw on YouTube they just had like the

(43:42):
cut up version of Flaco with McAfee, so I listened
to it because Flaco's a good interview. And they asked
him basically like are you playing the best football of
your career? And he was torn because he's like, well,
we played so much different in Baltimore. You know. I
was asked to play like I have been the last
couple of years, and they've let me throw it in

(44:03):
bombs away where they didn't let me do that last year.
But he's just he's a pretty solid player. I mean,
there's no way around it. Richson has moments, but like
he also just can turn the ball over at rapid
rates and have incompletions that kill you. So I get

(44:26):
because they've invested so much, they're going to go back
to them, but that could cost some games and cost
them to the playoffs, And like you said, how many
years can you go on and just not have this
situation play out with more wins? Mail back question, who's
more worthless to their team, Sirianni to the Eagles or

(44:51):
Patricia on Belichick's podcast, Well, Sirianni does lead team meetings,
and you know, I'm sure has one on one individual
meetings with players and coaches and leads coaching meetings throughout
the week. Like he's clearly doing things. Patricia. I clicked
this morning after DeVante was traded. It came up on

(45:13):
my YouTube algorithm that Belichick, Lombardi and his thing were
like they gave opinions on DeVante Adams. Now, I actually
think they just ran this before the trade even happened,
because they had kind of gotten win that it would happen,
so they just kind of went over it. So I
watched like fifteen minutes of it, and every time Patricia

(45:34):
talked one he talks. You know, It's crazy, Like I get,
if you're not gonna say anything controversial, if you don't
want to piss anyone off, that's fine. You want to
get back in the league, But then you gotta have
some curveballs that aren't just a cliche machine. I've never
seen a guy who's worked in the NFL longer who

(45:57):
brings nothing to the table, who is not working in
the NFL anymore and is now talking for a living.

Speaker 4 (46:04):
Belichick was taking some shots of the Jets and Patricia
just says nothing. He's like, yeah, Ad and DeVante's trying
to win, just trying to make plays and then try
to win some more. It's crazy, It's insane.

Speaker 1 (46:17):
Like I also thought if Sirianni's fired at the you know,
at the end of the year, and Belichick goes to
the Eagles, would obviously Patricia's doing this to go back
with Belichick wherever he goes. But could he bring him
back to the Eagles where he was terrible as a

(46:38):
defensive coordinator. I don't know the details of how you
know it ended there personally, like with him and Howie
and Lurie obviously didn't end well. But that's something to
keep an eye on. One for the mailbag. All the
way from sunny South Africa. You know, I've always wanted
to go to South Africa. It's thinking, is that a

(47:01):
good spot for a honeymoon? Long flight? I know that
maybe not Honeymoon, but definitely a travel destination sometime in
the next five ten years. I wanted to send it
a message for a long time, but I didn't have
an Instagram, not much into social media. I'm jealous, but
downloaded today just so I could send this message. So

(47:22):
my question is this, do you think the NFL will
ever play a game in South Africa? We have a
huge NFL fan base, and I would sell a kidney
and liver to watch my Niners or at any moment,
any NFL game here. I don't think you'd actually do that,
but I like your passion. I would say the chances

(47:45):
would be slim because of the travel. I'm pretty sure
it's a really long flight, and for the forty nine
ers flying all the way from the West coast adds
an extra five hours. I know I've had friends that
have gone to South Africa and don't quote me on this,
but isn't the flight I think from the West coast

(48:06):
like eighteen hours? I mean, it's really really long. I
just don't think the NFL is going to ask their
people to do that, you know, I think Brazil was
pushing it at like, what was it like eight for
the Eagles. Seven for the Eagles. That's a long flight.
You know. The one thing nice about going to London
is when the Jags play the Pats, and you're talking

(48:27):
five hour flights. So it's no different than the Pats
coming to play the Chargers or the Jags coming to
play Seattle. So I think the logistics of the travel
make that pretty difficult question for the bag. When I
watched the Jags players on the sideline, to me, they

(48:49):
come across as the ultimate collect a paycheck and chill team.
If you watch Trevor's demeanor, it's not different from a
regular NFL game than from a Pro Bowl. There's a
noticeable awshucks, it's all good, we get them next time
type vibe, so it's no surprise the team takes that

(49:11):
attitude from him. On the other hand, when you watch
players like Mahomes, even if they're behind just three points
in a meaningless Week four game, he's out there rallying
the troops NonStop. We are not losing this game over
my dead body. The intensity and competitive drive is just
off the charts. Even a young player like CJ was

(49:33):
out there this weekend shoving tablets in his Lineman's faces
to show where they could do better, and that's when
they were ahead by multiple touchdowns. Is it really possible
that a generational prospect like Trevor Lawrence has that little
passion for pro football. I went back this week to
that pre draft article from Sports Illustrated. Here's what it said.

(49:59):
He's he's not a war driven. He's not I want
to win a Super Bowl at all costs. His father said,
with who he is as a person, he could walk
away from the game tomorrow and be just fine. Looking back,
those words sound ominous. That's tough. With who he is

(50:24):
as a person, he could walk away from it tomorrow
and be fine. Can you imagine saying that about Peyton Manning,
Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen.
I don't think his failure is because he doesn't quote
unquote love football. I think looking back, he was kind

(50:46):
of an overhyped prospect. But I think when you go
through adversity and you don't love what you're doing, it's
easy to take the easy route and not try hard.
It's why I always recommend to young people, because as
you get older, it is more difficult to change careers

(51:09):
because of family dynamics and kids and bills. That is hard.
Doesn't mean you can't, but it is. It's becomes more
difficult the older you get. When you're young, the number
one advice I always give anyone is to go into business,
whatever you're going to do, with something you really really like,
and be willing to not make much money at the

(51:31):
beginning and bypass money in other industries that are more
of a quick buck because over time everything becomes a job,
and when you enjoy what you're doing, you will be
that much more willing to work hard. I would say
most of the hardest workers I've ever met are the
people that own their business. Why because they take complete

(51:55):
ownership in that it's theirs. It's why you can ever
asked like an employee to work as hard as you
if you own the If you own it, and I
think from an ownership standpoint, it feels like, yeah, I'm
just along for the ride. I just can't get over
them giving him two hundred million dollars based off his

(52:17):
first couple of years in the league. That was insane.
I get he's a good guy and likable, but I've
said this forever about the NFL. It was a great
experience for me. But one thing I knew, like I
could never be a GM because deep down in my soul,
I don't love football enough. Like I was around a

(52:40):
lot of people and I saw like their love for
football just trumped mine. I think it's pretty clear, Like
I like football a lot, right, But being around Bret Veach,
being around you know, Howie Roseman, Andy Reid, even Lewis Riddick,
like those guys are so much more in the depths
of the nerdiness of football which you have to have,

(53:01):
which all these guys have. I mean you go around
all the GMS. I mean they're just they're football obsessed.
It's their life and it's a huge part of my life.
But it's not as big like to work in it
and be great at it. And I would say this
just in general in sports, like you know, go around
pat Riley whoever. Right, it's it's you got to be

(53:22):
addicted to it. And that's for a player, coach, or
an executive. In Trevor Lawrence, he told us before he
even came in the league, like, hey, guys, I'm not
gonna be addicted to this. This is not gonna be.
You know who's addicted Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Jim Harball,
Andy Reid, John Harball, Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVeigh. I think

(53:45):
all the best guys in the league, Uh, the Watt family,
TJ and JJ. Right. Let mean you just go around
the league to the best players. You're like, God, these
guys fucking love football. Love football. Fred Warner, George Kittle, Like,
I mean, you can't the moment you start not giving

(54:10):
every ounce of your energy and focus and mind and
body to this sport. You know, as a player you
have to give your body as well as a coach
or an exec. It's just all your energy. You get laughed,
and I think you see a guy who's just getting laughed. Like, listen,
the reason John Dorsey took Baker Mayfield number one was

(54:34):
like the intangible competitiveness. Obviously he didn't he wasn't the biggest,
he doesn't have the best arm of all time, he
wasn't the fastest, and over time, like Baker could have
been washed out of the league. You know what, that guy,
that guy fucking likes playing football. That guy really likes
playing football. It showed at Oklahoma. It showed for spurts

(54:54):
in Cleveland, but Cleveland needs people alive. Then he gets
traded to Carolina, like not a great place. Remember the
joy he had that night with Sean McVay in LA
And then when he's done the last couple of years.
So I just don't And just because you love it
doesn't mean you're good enough. But if you have the
talent and you love it, like, it's really hard if
you get in the right situation because some of it's

(55:15):
out of your control, like who's your offensive coordinator or
your teammates, who's your organization, But if you get to
a decent spot, a good spot, it's hard to fail, man,
it really is. I say this all the time, like
it's why I defend perty, why he's not gonna go away.
The intangible, the competitiveness, The dude's an addict. Dude's an addict,

(55:37):
and if you're not, you don't have a shot. I
say this all the time. I feel like I just
reiterate this too much. But during draft time, when we're
discussing these prospects, the media is obsessed, like, let him
have a balance life, which listen, if you want to
have some balance at wide receiver whatever. When we talk quarterback,
I can't have balance. Obviously as you get older you

(55:59):
can have a wife and a family and stuff. But
I'm just talking about like you better say, it's like
football is my life beside my family, because it is
for all the best players, especially in my adult life.
And honestly, it's not even like it's not even debatable.
So if you want to have like seven other things
going on, like I'll bet against you, or if you

(56:21):
don't love football, like as a ten out of ten,
it's not like I like football. I enjoy playing on
game day. No, you got to be addicted to the
stuff Monday through Saturday. Tom and Peyton are just junkies
over that. I remember talking to Beach at the was
it this combine or might have been a couple of
combines ago. Maybe I was textan with him years ago.

(56:43):
Remember when Mahomes rolled his ankle in the playoff game
might have been against the Jags, and I think he
ended up playing the next week too. But I remember
Veach saying that he got to the office the next
day at like six am. Might have been after the
Super Bowl. Maybe this was to go to the Super
Bowl maybe I was talking to him about the Miami
Super Bowl, So this would have been when they first

(57:05):
played the Niners way back, you know, five years ago,
and he gets to the office because you just, you know,
it's a lot going on Super Bowl. You just kind
of got to get your bearings on that Monday morning,
even though you got two weeks and he's like, I
walked into the training room to like grab a gatorade
and Patrick was just in there, just you know, getting
treatment at like five point forty five or six am,

(57:26):
watching the game on his iPad. You can't fake that
because you gotta love it. You gotta love it. And
I don't know. I mean, I I don't know the kid,
but his dad told us, like why would his dad lie?
You ever hear like these parents talk about their kids.
You at the you know, the Peyton Mannings and the

(57:46):
Tom Brady's, you ever think like, yeah, he could walk away.
No one ever said that. Of those guys. Peyton had
to be like, yeah, man, no one will sign you.
We don't think you can throw. He's like, bro, I
still want to play. No one called him back. I
have a couple questions for the mailbag. What are your
thoughts on Drake May's first start, and what advice would

(58:07):
you give to someone trying to get into scouting. I
have college football experience in coaching high school the last
four years. I tried to get an intern position scouting
assistant job out of college but failed. I love the
game and love evaluating talent. I would say on the advice,
I would get into college. So I don't know where
you played college football, but I would try to work

(58:29):
for a college football program because that is the easiest
stepping stone to the NFL. And ideally, you know, the
bigger the program, the better. You don't have to go
to Bama or Texas, but if you could even get
you know, D one Double A that where NFL scouts
come through, or somehow get to a lower level Division
I school because that's the easiest way to meet scouts

(58:52):
and kind of get your foot in the door. I
had Drake May on kind of a smaller TV, and
obviously they were getting their ass kicked early. Some of
those throws he made were really nice, and to me,
he showed enough Like here's the thing with Drake May, right,
it's it's the physical attributes as a project, why you
wanted to work with him and the go route. He

(59:13):
threw another nice touchdown pass. He kind of ran around
after a couple of sacks, like you just like that's
ultimately why you threw him in because Jacobi can't do
any of that. But early on he got sacked a
couple of times. It looked kind of discombobulated. The Texans
versue is not a fair fight. It'd be like me
walking into a ring with Sugar Shaan or something. You know,

(59:36):
You're just You're just gonna get your ass kicked. So
I you know, some people will say, like to me,
from a winning perspective, I don't put that much credence
into bow Nick's fourth quarter against the Chargers, like that
doesn't I need that earlier in the game, right because
I'm evaluating, like can this team make the playoffs? So

(59:58):
like Colin goes, you look at that fourth quarter, well,
to me, like I at three and two, their defense
look good. I'm like, God, could the Broncos win ten games?
And then you see a moment like that, You're like,
at home, this can't happen where I'm cool. If that
happened to Drake, may you make all these plays in
the second half, like That's fine, because you're gonna lose
a lot of games. To me, can you provide hope?

(01:00:20):
Can you just make some big plays? Can you know,
ideally in three or four weeks, can you score some
early touchdowns in the game. But if some of your
stuff's in garbage time, I can live with that. And
you're really evaluating him more on just physical attributes, like
what does the arm strength look like? What does the

(01:00:43):
touch look like? Down the field? Are we gonna be
able to run this guy like Josh Allen like that?
Does he have a future like That's how I would
evaluate him. I have to go back and watch all
the snaps because I just kind of look over when
big plays happened. But listen, I liked him coming out.
I'm I'm a fan of projects. I have no problems

(01:01:04):
swinging for them. I was a fan of the Anthony
Richardson draft pick. And then part of it then is
on the coaching staff on the GM to then build
the team to coach the guy up. It's risky, but
I like risk. You know, some people like going in
the slow lane. Kyle Shanahan doesn't like risk. He much
more likes the sure, more basic thing. I come from

(01:01:26):
the school more of Andy Reid, like take some swings
might blow up in your face, but it might not.
So I now, obviously they didn't have the number one pick.
It's not like they chose them over all these other guys.
But I totally I would be excited if I was
a Patriots fan. To me that one go ball down
the sideline was like that. That was fun, and I

(01:01:47):
wouldn't put too much credence over like if all this
touchdowns happen over the next month, when they're down several
touchdowns like that, that's your team sucks, so which is
not his fault. He didn't control this. I also think
it's hard with them is when your offensive line like

(01:02:08):
he's gonna be running around for his life, which is
probably a big reason why they inserted him, because Jacoby
can't move and you just need a guy. Now, you
just gotta pray that he doesn't get injured like that.
The Bills is gonna be a tough matchup for him
because the Bill's got some pass rushers. I might just

(01:02:29):
play Jacoby against the Bills. Question for the mailbag, can
you please explain what happened with etn and why he
went from potential superstar running back out of college to
now a backup to Tank Bigsby. I was a big
Etn guy. Even early on in his career, he would
have some big plays. He was probably never gonna be,

(01:02:52):
you know, a true between the tackles. He's not as
physical even as like smaller. Let's use Kamara as an example.
Kamar is a really really physical player. He has no
problem lowering his shoulder. McCaffrey. Those guys we don't view
necessarily as like Derrick Henry's or Bo Jackson, but like
they enjoy contact. Etn was always going to be a

(01:03:16):
space player, but I remember last year there were just
some plays get him on the edges throwing the ball.
Does he like football? I mean, honestly does he? Because
that's the one position where talented guys get lapped the
fastest because so many players that like they just don't

(01:03:37):
want it because you have to run so hard. You
know what's crazy, as you can tell like right away
when a guy's kind of if the starter comes out
and the backup comes in, especially if you don't know
that much like some teams have, like their first and
second string guys are legit NFL guys right, like the Bears.
You know, the forty nine Ers had like McCaffrey than

(01:03:58):
Jordan Mason. But when Jordan Mason got injured, a couple
guys you're like, who is this guy? And early on
you see like, god, he's kind of he's kind of
just going down, not hitting the whole heart right where
if you watch the Lions, it's like Williams and Gibbs,
like these are two NFL running backs. You know the
Eagles gain well in Saquon, like these are two guys

(01:04:20):
that would play for any team. Sometimes that drop off,
it's like, God, this guy's not hitting the hole, and
then you start getting exposed when the backup, it's like
this guy's fucking running his ass off. So part of
it unless it's We talk a lot about toughness in
the NFL, and that was one thing Flacco said with McAfee.

(01:04:41):
He was like, he's like one defining characteristic that you
have to have if you're gonna be good in this
league is like you gotta be tough. And there's no
way to to quantify it. There's no way you can
scout it by watching the tape. But it's really really
hard and he's because He was giving the example of

(01:05:04):
Pittman who was supposed to go an ir and then
ends up playing and just proving your toughness and playing
through stuff is something that really resonates with players and
coaches and really separates guys. And as a running back
to go straight down at eleven guys, maybe not eleven
because all the DB's won't hit you, but seven eight
guys within I don't know fifteen yard radius are running

(01:05:28):
toward you and want to hit you, and if they
get it away from a blocker, they are just gonna
hit you hard. You have to be fearless, and it
really kind of separates guys, and it's why guys that
run like the one thing that stands stands out about Tank,
same thing that stands out about watching the Bucks dude
Bucky Irving, Like God, this guy's running his ass off,

(01:05:52):
he runs so hard. The Bears example I was using
is like, you know, Swift was kind of tap dancing.
Then they put the other guy, I think twenty three,
Like god, this guy is running hard, and you don't
need to be the most talented guy to make you know,
obviously all these guys are talented to make the NFL.

(01:06:13):
But you could be third or second on the depth chart,
and if you don't have some you know, elite guy
in front of you, if things start going bad, you're
gonna get some run. And the easiest way to stand out,
and I've seen it with coaches and I've seen it
with gms is just run your ass off, because if
you do, you might just run through a tackle. You
might just you know, there might be a hole and

(01:06:33):
all of a sudden you've got a twenty five yard
run and boom, you're on the map. Because part of
that mentality is usually established on special teams covering kicks
and you just carry it right over to offense. Or
some of these guys they just don't want contact, which
is understandable. I wouldn't want contact either, but I don't
play running back, and if you don't want contact as

(01:06:53):
a running back, it's gonna be really, really hard to
be successful in the NFL or willing to run through contact.
Was listening to you debate Colin about the greatest national
programs in college football. One I struggled to rank is Clemson.
Clemson had a near decade long run of elite quarterback play. TODJ.

(01:07:17):
Boyd Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, which included two national titles.
They also had a pretty legendary loss. So, I mean
they went to three even more appearances in several strong
New Year six Bowl Game wins. Who do you compare
them to all time and are they a better program

(01:07:38):
than Oregon? Uh, that's a good question. Well, obviously you
have the titles. That's you know, they have been more
successful in the Internet era than Oregon because they won
a Natty in I mean shit, they've been to four

(01:08:00):
national titles fifteen, sixteen, eighteen, in twenty nineteen, and they've
won three. You know, they won in nineteen eighty one
and then obviously they won two with one with DeShawn
and one with Trevor. I think Oregon has been more consistent.

(01:08:20):
But has Oregon ever won a national title? No, they
have not. They've been to two, they lost them both.
Twenty ten they lost to cam Newton, twenty fourteen they
got killed by Ohio State. I think if you were
betting on a program, you'd give the nod to Clemson.

(01:08:42):
But if you were betting on a program over the
next forty years, you'd bet on Oregon. You wouldn't hesitate
my take on the like I think if you have
I can't go historical, right, I wasn't alive in the
sixties and the seven but I can just go the
nineties through my adult life. To me, the best programs

(01:09:06):
pretty easily is Ohio State. Like we'll see if Alabama
can sustain this, but like Alabama was great when Nick
Saban was there, we remove him. Now I'm faithful into Boor,
But we'll see Kenny. What's his next ten? Like is
he gonna go to five final fours? You know, Colin
didn't mention LSU, which in my life right, especially the

(01:09:29):
Internet age. Starting around two thousand, LSU has won three
national titles with three different coaches. They won one with
Nick Saban, they won with Les Miles, and they won
with with Ed Oshon. Like that's how could you have
Oregon over LSU? So to me, it's Ohio State. Obviously

(01:09:51):
I wasn't alive for Bear Bryant, but pretty clear Alabama is, like,
I mean, one of the most It's like the Pittsburgh Steelers,
the Green Bay Packers, I mean the most, probably the mostest.
The USC. Thing's tough because for most of my life
USC has sucked. They had like a six year run
with Pete Carroll, especially the three years where they were

(01:10:11):
kicking everyone's ass, but you remove him. When I was
a kid, UCLA worked USC like Look at USC now
they went seven and five last year with a number
one overall pick. They're three and three. They look like
it's another seven and five team. So it's not like
they're that good right now now. They have been good
definitely before I was alive, like the sixties and seventies.

(01:10:35):
But I I don't know. I think sometimes they get overhyped.
So to me, it's like, Ohio State's an easy one,
BAM is an easy one. Then you can just make
arguments for a bunch of other people. I have a
hard time leaving LSU out just because three national titles
in the last twenty five years actually less than that,

(01:10:58):
because sabans will in two thousand and three, so I
that's like three national titles in they actually won two
thousand and three. I forget uh less miles a year,
but at Oseron's was twenty nineteen. I don't think it's
inconceivable that Brian Kelly gets to a couple final fours

(01:11:22):
in the next five years. So they won an three,
O seven and nineteen. I'd have LSU in there for sure,
then we could just debate. Looks like Texas about to
go on a little run. I think Texas. Oklahoma historically
has been pretty incredible. Oklahoma and Texas, you could like
combine those two. So Oklahoma has four national titles. Actually no,

(01:11:48):
they have more, but some of these in recent years
they've won. They won a couple in the seventies, they
won in nineteen eighty, they won in nineteen eighty six
claim national titles, they won an eighty five, two thousand,
they've been a national finalist two thousand, two thousand and three,
two thousand four, two thousand eight. So yeah, it's a

(01:12:11):
good debate, fun talk, have a great date. Audios. The
