Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Here we go, Hour two on a Thursday. I want
to thank Tom Brady, Sean McVay stopping by yesterday. Jordan
Chult just crushed Greg Cosel, Greg Olsen last hour. Wherever
you may be and however you may be listening, thanks
for making us part of your day. Jamac So. I
saw this story Dak Prescott. His hamstring is now pulling

(00:48):
off the bone, which is gross. But it's not gonna
be four weeks. He's gonna be out a long time.
So I'm gonna throw this at you. I'm gonna have
a I'm gonna timid opinion, and then I want you
to say, if this is too hot, I think the
Cowboys would be better served keeping marginally healthy players out

(01:15):
a soft tank. Hard to reinjure Micah's high ankle sprain
if he's doing a podcast. I think there needs to
be an organizational alignment to admit we're not it. If
you take the best teams in the NFC, best rosters
San Francisco, Detroit, Philadelphia, I would argue one offensive player
starts for the Cowboys, Zach Martin. One AJ Brown's better

(01:39):
than Cdee Lamb. There's good receivers everywhere. I don't think
they have any talent. I think they are void of talent.
Now there's a couple of things the Cowboys need to consider.
You want to root for cam Ward and Chaudeur Sanders
to play really, really well, and now Shador there'll be
a bitting war. There's gonna be more than a few teams.
Cam Ward keeps playing well. If you go look at

(01:59):
the draft stor right now, Cowboys draft eleventh. That's no
man's land. You gotta get up to four, five and
six New England. Jacksonville and Miami if they're ahead of
you don't need a quarterback, so they would be sellers.
But my take is Jacksonville and Miami are gonna win games.
Well well, Trevor Lawrence, well.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
He's gonna be out for a while.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
But they're not gonna draft the quarterback. New England's not
in Miami's not. I don't think they are. Those teams
will win games. Right now, you have three wins New
Orleans two, Carolina two, Cleveland two, Vegas two Giants two.
If you look at the Cowboys, go look at the
Cowboys schedule. There are a lot of l's on this thing,
a lot Philadelphia, Houston, Washington, those are ls, Cincinnati, Tampa, Philly, Washington.

(02:50):
If Dak's not playing against Cincinnati or Tampa, those are Ls, Carolina,
New York. You would be favored in those games. But
if Dallas can go five and twelve, they only got
three wins, now five and twelve, you are a top
five team with two red hot college quarterbacks. That's where

(03:11):
you want to get eleven. This is not a good
enough draft. I mean, quinn Viewers maybe get drafted late
first round, but we don't have a third quarterback. Carson Vett,
as you've noted, really disappointing. Quinn Ewers has hurt again.
Those guys have fallen off. Lincoln Riley Riley Leonards is
not a first round quarterback. So what you have is
two guys that are playing their butts off. Cam Ward
Scheed or Sanders. It would be great if you got

(03:32):
to four or five and you acknowledge as a franchise
we're not close. And if you look at Detroit, Philly
and San Francisco, forget the AFC Cowboys have Zach Martin
and a kicker on offense and special teams, Zach Martin
and a kicker start, they're a mile away. They need
to get up top five. They got five and twelve

(03:54):
last year. By the way, Chargers were five and twelve.
Got the coach right when right tackle, wide receiver, first
two picks gonna battle Kansas City for the division.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
So the only the big sticking point with what you
just said, which makes a lot of sense, is if
Jerry gives that order, McCarthy's gonna look at him and say, dude,
I'm a lame duck coach. I don't have a contract,
and now you're taking my best players out so we
tank for a high pick.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Why don't you just fire me now? I don't want
to be on the sideline.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
If you're saying, hey, Micah, don't come back, Diggs, Bland,
everybody who's marginally hurt, just sit out so we can
get a drink. I don't want to be here for that.
So we're losing forty four to ten, and I look
like an idiot. Fire me, now, okay, you think Jerry
would do that?

Speaker 1 (04:36):
I think Jerry. If Mike offered that as a back
Jerry into a corner, I would do it. If it
was an ultimatum, I would do it.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
Well, I think it has to be if you're McCarthy right,
Like McCarthy doesn't want to retire.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
He's still relatively young.

Speaker 4 (04:51):
Yeah, he's You know how bad they're gonna get beatd
down if you pull out all their best players.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Honestly, I'm just saying some will play all. Shouldn't slow
play the guys back. You're not tanking. You don't tank
in hockey or football. You slow play guys back. You
start looking at that schedule today, it has got mismatches.
It is loss after loss. I mean, we thought Atlanta
was the one spot where they would they were a disaster.

(05:19):
DA's now gone there are This is not one of these.
It would be hard to lose. I look at this
schedule and I think Giants at home in Carolina are
the two you'd be favored in. You're not beating Tampa.
If Baker and Mike Evans or there, you're not beating Tampa.

Speaker 4 (05:33):
Okay, how about this Cooper Rush When he started last time,
didn't he go like four and oho or four and one?

Speaker 3 (05:38):
He had like a pretty good stretch.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
Ye had a pretty good defense?

Speaker 3 (05:40):
World where at home? This week? AJ Brown doesn't play
for the Eagles. We know how limited the offense looks
without AJ Brown.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
What if Cooper Rush gets some competitive McCarthy dwlls on
some trick plays and they somehow shocked the world and
take down Let's wait for that to happen before we
I mean, it's not out of the realm apostas. I
like the Eagles. I'm probably gonna be on them, but
so's America.

Speaker 5 (06:02):
No, A J.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Brown is big, and then you know Ceedee Lamb has
a big game coming.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Off the taking A J. Brown out of this Eagles team.
The way they're playing, you're you're taking off the salad
fork from a great meal. Nobody's gonna notice.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
AJ Brow come.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
No, I mean he's great, But Davonte Goddard's coming back,
Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurt's playing well. O line's healthy. They're
gonna roll. Did did Philadelphia had never a problem getting
worked out for Dallas, they're gonna roll.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
I largely agree. I like your strategy.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
That's you know, it's disappointing you didn't consult me, Jay
and c consulting on.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
That, But yeah, I think it's a good all right,
Greg co sell our guy on Thursdays forty five years
NFL Films. He had to listen to that nonsense, Okay,
I want to I know, I think I maybe know
the answer there. It happens infrequently with the salary cap,
where you just get a perfect group of players. And

(06:59):
I watch the Lions last week, and even against Green
Bay and sloppy Weather, it looked like big brother little brother.
I'm gonna ask you, why is their rush offense so effective?
I think a lot of it's just personnel. But is
there a scheme or a schematic reason why? I mean
they just that game with Green Bay wasn't even as

(07:20):
close as the score. What is it about that O
line in the rush game?

Speaker 6 (07:27):
Yeah, Colin, I don't think quite Frankly, there's a lot
of mystery when teams run the ball really well. But
I think the O Lion And it's funny you mentioned
that because I really looked at it this week in
detail because I did a piece on Gibbs in Montgomery,
and you see certain blocks that offensive line coaches always
talk about, backside cutoff blocks, front side reach blocks. Frank Ragnow,

(07:51):
the center who's playing with I guess a toe injury
that's inoperable, is so good at front side reach blocks
in their zone run game. They're a high percentage zone
run team with both David Montgomery and Jamier Gibbs, and
their O line is so good at the little nuances
and the little details of run blocking in the zone

(08:13):
run game and Montgomery. You know, obviously Gibbs is the
explosive back, the one who can take it to the
house anytime, as we've seen, but Montgomery is a little
laterally quicker than he's given credit for, and he's a
really strong finisher, so he always gets the hard yards
just like Gibbs. While you wouldn't view him as a
naturally powerful runner, he gets tougher yards as well.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
Even though he's the more explosive one.

Speaker 6 (08:39):
But I think the O line is really really good,
and keep one thing in mind, and I think this
plays into their passing game. They put the quarterback Jared
Goff under center. They play under center as much or
more than any offense in the league, and I've always
believed that that helps both your run game and your
play action pass game.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
So I said earlier today, Greg, there is a difference
between rushing to judgment and identifying the truth. Three games
in to CJ. Stroud's career, I said, he's better than
Bryce Young. He's bigger, he stronger, he's more accurate. Five
games into Herbert Tua, I said, I like the bigger, stronger,

(09:19):
more mobile, athletic, bigger arm kid Tua or Herbert. I
don't think that was rushing to judgment. I think it's
born out that most gms would take Herbert and c J.
Stroud Jaden Daniels Caleb Williams. I don't think I'm rushing
to judgment to say that the issues with Caleb are
surfacing resurfacing in the NFL accuracy and right now when

(09:45):
I watch those two in the pocket, I think Jaden
has an easier, more effortless distribution, He's more accurate, he's
more comfortable. Some of it's coaching, But I don't think
I'm rushing to judgment saying my guess is going forward,
Jaden is always going to be in most years just
a more accurate pocket passer than Caleb Williams. Or is

(10:07):
that a rush to judgment what does the film say?

Speaker 6 (10:12):
I mean, I think up to this point in time
what you said is true. I would just be careful
about making that a definitive judgment about their careers. You know,
the coaching part is always hard for me, Colin, because
we're not there, so we don't know. Sometimes guys can
be coached perfectly and they don't necessarily do it when
they get in the game, So we don't know the answer.

Speaker 5 (10:34):
To that specifically. But a couple of points that I
agree with you one hundred percent.

Speaker 6 (10:38):
I think that Daniels is just a naturally more comfortable player.

Speaker 5 (10:43):
In the pocket.

Speaker 6 (10:43):
Yes, and he's a really accurate thrower, and particularly deep balls.
He throws the deep ball really really well. It just
looks easy. Caleb Williams and you and I have discussed this.
He's obviously a great thrower, just as a natural thrower
of the football.

Speaker 5 (11:00):
It comes out really really well.

Speaker 6 (11:03):
But I would say at this point that in the
pocket he's not overly comfortable. He's a little quick to
move sometimes he creates his own pressure by how he moves.

Speaker 5 (11:14):
The old line has been very up and down.

Speaker 6 (11:16):
But he's certainly not at the point in his career
and you never know if this will happen. He's certainly
not at the point in his career where he can
compensate for or camouflage for some old line concerns.

Speaker 5 (11:27):
So in some ways he makes them worse.

Speaker 6 (11:30):
So you know, it's hard to make a definitive statement
right now because Williams is very gifted.

Speaker 5 (11:35):
But right now there's no question.

Speaker 6 (11:37):
Now when you watch the tape, you just see a better,
more comfortable player when you watch Jayden Daniels.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
So you were one of the people that you push
back on Russell Wilson from the very beginning, even in
his prime. You said it looks like plan chaos or
plan scrambling, and that you didn't love him as a
pocket quarterback. Of course, as a Seattle kid, I was
all in. I'm all rainbows, Bird's turpin' pot of gold.
But it's interesting to watch him in Pittsburgh, like Seattle,

(12:06):
strong running back, good defense, defensive culture, throws a pretty
mid the deep ball, nice soft landing spot. I am
feeling like I'm seeing a little bit of the Seattle
Russ not turning it over nice over the top throws,
doesn't dissect the middle of the field particularly well. And

(12:30):
I think with this defense like Seattle, I think you
can win a lot of games in Pittsburgh. How much
past his prime is it? Do you see a little
Russ Seattle when you watch him here with this lineup,
in this run game and this defensive culture.

Speaker 5 (12:45):
Yeah, that's exactly what I see.

Speaker 6 (12:47):
And I think you're seeing that because that's who Russell
Wilson is and people in the league know that, and
they've known that for years. So I think when you
have Russell Wilson as your quarterback, that's the way your
offense has to be. I mean, in the two games
he started, Najee Harris has had nineteen plus carries over
one hundred yards in each game.

Speaker 5 (13:05):
They're all line while not great, is good. They obviously
traded for Mike Williams.

Speaker 6 (13:11):
Now another player, if healthy, gives you a vertical dimension,
So now they have a number of vertical dimensions on
their roster with Williams. Pickens Austin is a is a
track guy who can run, so he's a vertical dimension
as well. So friar Muth is a really good tight
end who can work the middle of the field. But

(13:32):
what have they done with Russ When you watch the tape,
what do you see? You see boot action, play action Boot,
You see vertical throws down the field. You're one hundred
percent right. He's not a true drop back passer who's
going to work the middle of the field and throw
in windows. That's not his game.

Speaker 5 (13:48):
So you play to what your quarterback is.

Speaker 6 (13:50):
That's what the good teams do, and that's what the Steelers,
that's the formula, that's the profile, because that's who Russell
Wilson is.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
You know, I said this with Jordan Schultz, our last guest.
It's not a criticism, it is a reality that I
think Jalen Hurts when he throws twenty six times runs eight,
that's his game. I think you get him to mid
thirty throws and that's not Listen, there's about three guys
in the planet I want to throw thirty eight times.

(14:20):
You know, I mean, seriously, Mahomes Stafford protection. And so
when I watch Philadelphia, what my eyes are telling me
Greg Offensively, they have defined what they want from Jalen Hurts,
and that and his turnovers have disappeared. Is that they're playing.
They're like they've defined a role. This is the number

(14:41):
of throws rushes, and it's almost like you talk about
all the time when you define reads for quarterbacks. It's
almost like they've devised these are the boxes we want
to check with him. Let's not force him into thirty
nine throws. That's what I'm seeing with them. It's a
much more efficient, stable, reliable offense. What's the film say?

Speaker 5 (15:03):
Just what you said.

Speaker 6 (15:04):
In fact, you could almost argue they're the Seattle offense
as well. But you know, I've always said when you
watch film of a team and how they use their quarterback,
how they deploy their quarterback, they're telling you what they
think of the quarterback and the offense. You don't have
to figure that out. So you're one hundred percent right, Colin,
you nailed it. They're telling you their offensive coaching staff

(15:25):
is telling you what Jalen hurts is, this is what
they want their offense to look at. By percentage, Barkley
has had the highest number of first down runs of
any running.

Speaker 5 (15:37):
Back in the league.

Speaker 6 (15:38):
Okay, so that tells you what they want to do
with their offense. It starts with Barkley, so right now,
Hurts he's a very good.

Speaker 5 (15:47):
Deep ball thrower.

Speaker 6 (15:48):
Yes, last week he had a forty six yarder to Smith,
which is exactly what they want their offense to look like.

Speaker 5 (15:53):
Colin.

Speaker 6 (15:53):
They lined up with three tight ends thirteen personnel when
play action max protected with seven and DeVonta Smith ran
a great route and Hurts can make those downfield throws
and he can always make a couple of really really
good throws in every game, which he does.

Speaker 5 (16:11):
But you're one hundred percent right.

Speaker 6 (16:12):
They've defined in their mind being with him every day,
because you and I are not. They've defined being with
him every day what he is and they do not
want him dropping back thirty five plus times. And keep
in mind, he's still a really strong runner.

Speaker 5 (16:26):
There's no question yea.

Speaker 6 (16:28):
Defensive coordinators have to game plan for him as a runner,
both by design and the scrambling element. And in the
last four games he hasn't turned the ball over once,
so that can't be overstated. When your quarterback's not turning
the ball over and you can run the ball really well,
and by the way, their defense is playing much much better,
then you can win games.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
So I find the Chiefs. This may be repetitive to you.
They are so good in high leverage moments, They are
so good on third down there it's just an and
they're still trying to figure out what the heck to
do with the worthy He stepped out of bounds one play.
You know, he didn't have a lot of feel to
wear it. Yeah, and they're using bad Yeah, it was
really bad. They're using backup running backs. They're like a

(17:11):
chef trying to figure the dish out and they keep
tasting get in there like, no, it's not there, it's
not there yet. They're unbelievable on third down? Is that
just Andy Reid, Matt what is it?

Speaker 6 (17:23):
Well, that's a combination I think of scheme and Mahomes,
which is normally the case when you have a really
good quarterback, it becomes scheme and the player because the
player is capable of doing special things. But in a
lot of these high leverage, critical situations that you mentioned,
they do a really really good.

Speaker 5 (17:40):
Job of how they scheme receivers.

Speaker 6 (17:43):
I mean they hit I think the last touchdown to Hopkins,
which was third down, which was a slam from just
a few yards out, maybe six yards out. It was
just a really well schemed, simple concept in which they
dictated a one on one matchup with Hopkins against a
cent a backup corner Hayes, who is starting only because
they have injuries. But they're really good at doing that.

(18:07):
And you started I started to see in this game
this past week, I started to see some more of
their concepts really show up and take effect.

Speaker 5 (18:16):
But you know, it's funny.

Speaker 6 (18:17):
They haven't really been rhythmic the way we think of rhythmic,
and certainly going back a couple of years where it
seemed like they hit big plays every week down the field,
they're not really hitting those. But they do a really
good job on third down. And that's Mahomes and that's
the schematics of it. And if they can be over
fifty three percent on third down, Colin, they're gonna win

(18:38):
a lot of games.

Speaker 7 (18:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
I want to finish with a player that we both love,
but you see so much tape on him. What is
Matt Stafford of the Rams they face the Dolphins this
week in a really fun game. What is his most
what is his most under We know his arms great,
we know it the arm angles. We know he's a
bright kid. He's seen every defense in the league. What
is his most underrated quality?

Speaker 5 (19:04):
I would say pocket toughness.

Speaker 6 (19:06):
I would say that in this league to me, okay,
and some might think I'm old school because the way
the game has has changed, and there's no question that
athletic movement quarterbacks are far more of a factor in
NFL football than they've ever been. But I think pretty
much every coach would agree Colin that in order to
be a great quarterback, and you know me, I don't

(19:27):
use that word loosely, and I think Stafford is a
great quarterback. You have to be able to make throws
from the pocket when there's people around you. That's just
part of playing quarterback in the NFL. That's different from
the college game. And I think that Stafford throughout his career,
you know, after his first two years in the league
and when everybody thought he was brittle, he doesn't miss

(19:47):
He's hardly missed many games at all. And he is
so tough in the pocket, and that to me, has
really stood out about him, his ability to stand and deliver.
You know, people get so caught up in what pressure
is pressure in the NFL.

Speaker 5 (20:02):
You have to see the plays to know what pressure
is that's not a metric.

Speaker 6 (20:06):
You can't just say, well, there's there's a defender within
a yard or two that's pressure.

Speaker 5 (20:10):
Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.

Speaker 6 (20:12):
You know, You've got to see those plays and he's
just so good and you know their defense, we could
get into that. Maybe next week we'll talk Rams defense,
because we'll see how they do this week. But they've
made some major changes there that have really been fascinating
to watch. But if you want to go to the
play for this week, because I chose this play, and
again I didn't know you necessarily you're going to ask me.

Speaker 5 (20:34):
About that particular quality.

Speaker 6 (20:36):
But this really shows exactly what we're talking about with
Matthew Stafford.

Speaker 5 (20:40):
This was a completion last week against Seattle when he.

Speaker 6 (20:44):
Hit de Marcus Robinson, who, by the way, he has
been a very good player for them. Yeah, so now
we're going to see here, We're going to see that
Stafford here he's under center.

Speaker 5 (20:54):
Now.

Speaker 6 (20:54):
One thing about the Rams, and this has become a
trend in the league, and that's too too at well,
is they use motion as much or more than any
team in the league, and that's become a big, big
trend in the league. So what you're going to see
here is you're going to see Atwell who when he's
in the game, he's their motion receiver, so he motions
across the formation. The coverage is a little murky right now,

(21:16):
you don't know, but it ends up becoming man to
man coverage, and you're going to see that with all
the matchups across the board. You're gonna have five matchups
in man to man coverage. And the last one we
show is the linebacker on the back, Tyron Williams.

Speaker 5 (21:30):
So what do the Seahawks do here. They're going to blitz.

Speaker 6 (21:32):
They're going to rush the other linebacker, Ernest Jones, a
former RAM by the way, so he's going to blitz here.
Now Williams becomes really important because this is actually play action.
But he sees the blitz, so what does he do?
He abandons the playfake. This is just really smart football.
But now there's something called a green dog colin that linebacker,

(21:54):
Terrell Dotson, who was responsible for Williams in coverage. He
now adds into the pressure. But I just want you
to be aware of DeMarcus Robinson here. He's going to
catch the ball, as we know, but the pressure now
is going to come from Dotson because there's no one
to account for him.

Speaker 5 (22:09):
You can see that he's clean. He's what we call
a free hitter.

Speaker 6 (22:13):
There's no one who can block him because Williams has
picked up Jones.

Speaker 5 (22:16):
Who was an actual called blitzer.

Speaker 6 (22:19):
So again, just keep in mind that Robinson now is
running a crossing route and he's going to run into space.
It's man coverage, but he's going to run into space space.
He beats Witherspoon across the field. So just watch Stafford here.
You're going to see a much better angle from behind
Stafford that we're going to look at now.

Speaker 5 (22:37):
But this throw.

Speaker 6 (22:38):
This is not a routine throw call, and this is
NFL quarterbacking. You've got to be able to make throws
like this looking in the NFL. I mean, yeah, that's
about as big time as it gets. And that's what
Stafford has done throughout his career. And he just is
so good in the pocket and making throws like that.
You talk to coaches, which I do, they'll tell you
that he's the best quarterback in the NFC.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
Yeah, I don't.

Speaker 1 (23:01):
I don't doubt it. I've said this before. He was
a better high school college quarterback than Aaron Rodgers. He
was better the first four years in the league. If
Stafford goes to Green Bay and Aaron goes to Detroit,
I think Stafford would be I think he'd be in
that sort of elevated Mahomes Brady because you would have
had continuity, excellent coach. I think Stafford is the most

(23:22):
underrated player in the league, probably in a decade, because
of where he went, initially to a poorly run franchise.

Speaker 5 (23:28):
For you could be right, yeah.

Speaker 6 (23:30):
For a guy like myself who watches tape and talks
to coaches, he is so highly respected because of the
way in which he plays the game.

Speaker 1 (23:38):
Greg Cosel forty five years NFL Films as always on
a Thursday.

Speaker 5 (23:41):
Thanks Greg, Thanks Conn appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (23:45):
You bet.

Speaker 1 (23:45):
And that's not a shot at Aaron, but Aaron. I
mean high school, he was number one in the country, college,
number one of the country. First four years in Detroit,
very good, and just over time the chaos with Detroit,
cheap owners, bad couching, it was a mess, and so
we kind of just forget about it. The minute he
goes back like at Georgia and gets really good players
around him, You're like, oh, Wow, he's just that mean

(24:08):
that throw. If you can't watch it on radio, obviously
that throw is so hard and it's just that's what
he does.

Speaker 6 (24:33):
News no no turn on the news.

Speaker 2 (24:37):
This is the Herd Line News.

Speaker 3 (24:40):
Well, they called me money MacIntire, not money made with
money Mac.

Speaker 1 (24:43):
And you have you have had seven straight winning weeks
on our Big Bet segment coming up. I've had two.
I've had three or four winning weeks. You have been
on a two month heater in our Big ten Best.
I love my Best.

Speaker 3 (24:54):
I'm in trouble this week.

Speaker 4 (24:55):
But let's get to the NFL colling, because you've got
to talk about the Jets who kind of have fallen
off the face to the earth this week at this show,
almost no mentions but Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 3 (25:04):
Oh, we love Aaron Rodgers, Colin.

Speaker 4 (25:06):
So the Jets haven't lived up to expectations with Rogers healthy.
Salah was fired and next man up is Joe Douglas,
who spoke about his future yesterday.

Speaker 7 (25:16):
Obviously it starts to me, you know, so you know,
I can look back and there's quite a few things
that I could have done better. Obviously, when when when
the situation happens like happened four weeks ago. Yeah, you
you have a lot of self reflective moments on the
things that you could have done better to make that,

(25:36):
to keep that from happening.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
Yeah, well, he I like Joe. I think this roster
has good players. Joe Douglas because he whiffed on a
quarterback in a left tackle, and those are the two
positions you can't whiff on. Is easy to beat up on.
I actually think he's actually really good at his job.
I did not like Zach Wilson. I've said it a
hundred times.

Speaker 3 (26:00):
Makai Beckton, you like him?

Speaker 1 (26:01):
I thought he was. He had weight issues in college.
He was three seventy five. But remember they needed a quarterback.
It was the COVID year. So a lot of smart
executives got fooled by the COVID year. Trey Lance went
to John Lynch. He got fulled too. The COVID year
guys didn't play as many games they came in, so
I kind of give him a Zach Wilson pass. But

(26:23):
I think by and large, I was talking to a
Jets fan yesterday and I said, they have seven or
eight players I really like, and I don't think Aaron's
one of their top five players. Garrett Wilson, Breeze Hall,
Elijah Verratt, Tucker Quinnon, Williams saus Gardener.

Speaker 3 (26:36):
They've got a better rouss than the Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (26:38):
Like, it's oh guy, second to no question.

Speaker 4 (26:40):
But the knock on Douglas is, listen, you whiff on Wilson,
you whiff on Beckton.

Speaker 1 (26:45):
It's hot, it's rough.

Speaker 4 (26:46):
We I mean, hey, he's been neutered. Basically we know
that now Aaron Rodgers pulling the strings. And Woody Johnson too,
were like, I don't think Douglas has any real power.

Speaker 3 (26:54):
He has no power draft non quarterback.

Speaker 1 (26:56):
Sure, but I'm telling people there are a lot worse
gas in the league than Joe Douglas.

Speaker 3 (27:02):
I would need to give that more thought.

Speaker 5 (27:03):
But what is that?

Speaker 4 (27:04):
So what he hasn't? I mean, look at the numbers
under Douglas since twenty nineteen Jets are.

Speaker 3 (27:08):
Thirty and sixty two. That's his players.

Speaker 1 (27:11):
Colin, Well, well, the big issue is when you whiff
on a quarterback, you get trapped, and then you bring
in Aaron as this magic licksor to fix everything, and
that's not what Aaron is. The savior thing doesn't work.
So there's a lot of things here. You also have
to you have to take an under consideration who his

(27:31):
owner is.

Speaker 4 (27:32):
Yeah, he's a We don't like what hey Johnson, but
look at that note from our research guy at the bottom.
The Jets under Joe Douglass have more double digit losses
than they do wins. So they're not even not just losing,
they're getting blown out more than they're winning. And like,
I get it, Joe Douglas can draft well. Making the
assistant GM.

Speaker 1 (27:49):
I'll just say, why don't I talking about the Jets.
Certain organizations take the Chargers historically Bouts, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers,
Justin Herbert, So we don't always think the Chargers have
been brilliantly run. They never miss on quarterbacks. The Jets
are the opposite. They've hit on a dozens of players.
They can't get the quarterback right, so it just goes

(28:11):
to show you the Chargers remain viable despite the fact
they've missed on multiple coaches. They always get the quarterback right.
The Jets can't get the coach right of the quarterback right,
but they've had good rosters. So it's rex Ryan, I
get was a little bit of a hit, but I
guess my point is it really comes down to if

(28:33):
you get If you get the quarterback right, it solves.
I mean, Brett Veach has missed on wide receivers, John
Lynch has had big misses in the first round on quarterbacks.
This stuff is hard.

Speaker 3 (28:45):
Of course it's hard.

Speaker 4 (28:46):
So I had Bruce Felman on my podcast and we
talked about quarterbacks in the draft after Schedure and Cam Whorton,
and he made a decent case for Beck, who has
a tough schedule down the stretch. We know Beck has
not been good, but if he's able to liver in
say the SEC title game.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
No question.

Speaker 3 (29:02):
I thought about another more big game he has. I
think it might be lsu.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
I don't know, Well, he's gonna have several big games.

Speaker 4 (29:07):
Exactly, and if he can overcome the slow start that
he's had, he gets back in the discussion and there's
like four or five other guys who probably aren't first rounders,
but are like, hmm, that guy in the third could
have a.

Speaker 3 (29:17):
Lot of value.

Speaker 4 (29:18):
So the Jets almost certainly when we take on a
quarterback and we just got to move on from Aaron Rodgers.
Now what Rogers beat Arizona this week and everybody's oh, the.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
Jets are back.

Speaker 1 (29:27):
That is one of my bets.

Speaker 4 (29:29):
I'm not touching it, not with your money either, all right.
Next story is the Atlanta Falcons. They won five of
six lead this NFC South at six and three. Saw
a number of contenders make moves to improve with the deadline,
but Atlanta chose to stand pat.

Speaker 3 (29:43):
There's Raheem Morris on the decision.

Speaker 7 (29:45):
We've had a couple discussions about things, and obviously Terry's
always grinding and on the phone, and I'm not definitely
a part of all those conversations, especially preparing for the
Saint sales are the things you really want to be
concerned with. But no, you know, and we.

Speaker 5 (29:59):
Feel really good about the guys. We got so good
about where we're at.

Speaker 1 (30:03):
You know, there was a courageous American sportscaster when the
world was crapping on the Falcons drafting Michael Pennix after
acquiring Kirk Cousins and one sportscaster in a rainstorm was
a glee of sunshine who said, I like the Falcons
to win twelve games. Cousins is a brilliant pickup. Do

(30:25):
you would call who got American sportscaster? Some call him
the honesty broke?

Speaker 3 (30:29):
Oh gosh, oh, oh gosh.

Speaker 4 (30:31):
All right, so you're right they got Pennix eight, you
loved it.

Speaker 5 (30:35):
The reason they're.

Speaker 4 (30:36):
Six or three has nothing to do with Michael Pennix.
They now they could have gotten the draft. Let's look
at some guys who were right after Pennis rookies midway
through the season.

Speaker 1 (30:44):
Let's do that.

Speaker 3 (30:45):
Roma Donze nothing, nothing, yet he's kind of buried. JJ
McCarthy hurt the lineman from Penn State to the Jets. Okay, whatever,
the phone Necks. They're not taking him.

Speaker 1 (30:54):
Rock Bewers.

Speaker 4 (30:56):
He would look good catching passes from Kirk Cousins.

Speaker 3 (31:00):
Uh, then lot too from the Colts.

Speaker 4 (31:01):
He's been pretty good off the edge, and they sure
as hell could use him in Atlanta, which is second
to last.

Speaker 1 (31:06):
Judon, So they got somebody.

Speaker 4 (31:08):
Iron Murphy, the defensive tackle who showed well, not healthy.
He's not healthy. But when he's playing Dallas Turner and
not much. Jared Verse of the Rams a monster.

Speaker 3 (31:18):
Oh my gosh, what a whiff by the Falcons.

Speaker 4 (31:20):
Can you imagine Jared Verse opposite Judon Come on, Colin,
they can't pressure anybody.

Speaker 1 (31:25):
Can you imagine Michael Pennix is a rookie playing and
have two.

Speaker 3 (31:28):
Wins, But he's not. He's sitting on the bed.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
Right because they went and acquired Kirk Cousins.

Speaker 3 (31:34):
We're gonna relitigate this again, aren't we.

Speaker 4 (31:35):
Oh, Brian Thomas Junior for Jacksonville dominating.

Speaker 1 (31:38):
He's good.

Speaker 3 (31:39):
God yeah, big with Chop Robinson for the Dolphins.

Speaker 1 (31:41):
And it's very easy when a draft is over to go.
Jared Verse. I heard all these people before the draft
banging on the Rams like he's a one move guy.
He didn't have a lot of moves. No, you can't
stand in front of the dude. He's a monster, utterly
dominant in Todd dominant. By the way, the Rams last
couple of years have to get on all their defensive
draft picks. They're like eight for eight all of the
guys that they got. An undrafted guy at safety from

(32:04):
Tennessee's got four picks.

Speaker 3 (32:05):
So listen. If the Chargers won't let us us, not
just you, us in the war room, maybe the Rams
will let us in.

Speaker 1 (32:11):
The Rams will let me in the war room. Old
three point gunner out there on his phone?

Speaker 3 (32:18):
All right, j M, you got something pressing.

Speaker 4 (32:22):
Obviously a big matchup of the AFC North tonight Thursday
Night football Bengals Ravens. T Higgins listed as doubtful. Everybody
in their mom says he's not going to play.

Speaker 3 (32:33):
Does that do anything for you? No, T Higgins.

Speaker 1 (32:35):
I think the side is Cincinnati.

Speaker 5 (32:39):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (32:39):
Joe Burrow is a very good underdog quarterback. He is
a tremendous quarterback. Getting three or more as an underdog
Borrow is the side here.

Speaker 3 (32:48):
Did you you have that number?

Speaker 7 (32:49):
Day?

Speaker 4 (32:49):
I thought I was gonna surprise you with it. Joe
Burrow getting three or more is sixteen and three against
the spreads.

Speaker 1 (32:54):
He's very good, and it's a divisional Mike Tomlin, Mike
Tomlin is an underdog coach. Joe Burrow is an underdog quarterback.
Just bet them you'll win some, you'll lose some. But
Joe is a great and he's also a very good
road underdog quarterback, very good.

Speaker 3 (33:09):
Four defense is just Terry. Let's be real, it's not good.

Speaker 8 (33:14):

One of college football's breakout stars, running back Caleb Johnson,
leads the Iowah Hawkeyes into the Rose Bowl for a
showdown again. Do you cla It all kicks off tomorrow
at ninety stern six specific on Fox.

Speaker 1 (34:07):
All Right, seven weeks in a row for jmack, three
out of four weeks for me. We do our big
bets and here we go on a Thursday.

Speaker 2 (34:16):
It's time for big bets. Colin and j Mack make
their favorite big ten bets of the week.

Speaker 1 (34:27):
Okay, I like Iowa tomorrow to beat Ucla. Caleb Johnson's
second leading rusher. They'll control the ball. This Iowa team
is scoring points. They're always a good defense, excellent special
teams with Kirk Farnce. This team is ball control. UCLA's
offense struggles, and I also think Ucla probably played their

(34:49):
game of the year last week. I thought they played
as bad as well as UCLA can. I think they
get humbled. I think this is the most reliable Iowa
offense in a while. This running back, he's the real deal.
I think they win by a touchdown. They play keep
away from UCLA's hot and cold, often cold offense.

Speaker 3 (35:07):
Yeah, I don't hate that.

Speaker 4 (35:09):
Let's start with Ohio State Perdue. I went under fifty
three and a half. College football is way more weak
to week than the NFL h Ohio State game of
the month or whatever. Against Penn State. I think we'll
see a little regression. They'll dive back the aggressiveness. Maybe
this is a thirty five to ten and it stays
under fifty three and a half. Perdue is an absolute
train wreck. Just a terrible football team this year.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
Okay, I don't like big numbers in pro football, I
do in college. I like Oregon to win and blow
out in Maryland. These programs are going in totally different directions.
Oregon's getting better every week, Maryland's getting worse. Oregon is
the best home team in the country, better than Georgia
and Texas. They are a great home team. Beat Ohio State.
Maryland's the third worst scoring defense in the Big Ten.

(35:55):
All of their losses have been blowouts. Maryland to me,
and by the way, in Big Ten play, they are
built for it. This is a physical team teams in
the Big Ten. Ask the Buckeyes. You go to Houston Stadium.
This is the loudest stadium, in my opinion, in the country.
I think if you've never been there before, you have
no idea what you're in for. And I think Oregon

(36:18):
lay the twenty four and a half points. I think
they're rolling and getting better by the week.

Speaker 3 (36:22):
I missed that one. That's that's a good pick. Oregon
in a destruction I'm going risky.

Speaker 4 (36:28):
Indiana favored by two touchdowns against the defending champs in Michigan.

Speaker 3 (36:33):
This is just a brutal stretch for the Wolverines.

Speaker 4 (36:34):
Two weeks ago they hosted Michigan State, real tough rivalry game.
Then last week, of course, hosted number one Oregon. They
got destroyed. And then now you've got to go on
the road to face Indiana.

Speaker 3 (36:45):
So I alluded to quarterbacks earlier.

Speaker 4 (36:47):
This kid rourk for Indiana transfer. It's twenty four years old.
This guy knows how to sling it. Indiana is doing
some things. Man, they are real. They have a lot
of transfers. They went through the portal heavily. I know
fourteen is a lot to lay. Tell you, I've gotten
in front of Indian or twice and it's cost me money.

Speaker 3 (37:02):
I'm not doing it again. Give me the who's your
discovering fourteen?

Speaker 1 (37:05):
I'm gonna take the over forty six points. Washington at
Penn State. Do you know that James Franklin's twenty eight
to one against everybody but Michigan and Ohio State. They
rolled to a lot of big wins. Washington's defense gave
up almost four hundred and seventy five yards of the USC.
Usc just couldn't in the red zone push it through

(37:25):
so USC moved the ball very well. I don't love
the Husky secondary. I think Washington is capable enough to
score some points. But I'm betting on Penn State in
a game in which I think they're really disappointed how
they played against Ohio State. I don't think they played
as well as they can. I don't think they're as
good as Ohio State. But I think this is the

(37:47):
over forty six points here.

Speaker 5 (37:49):
So this is tricky.

Speaker 4 (37:50):
I did lay it with Penn State thirteen and a half.
You don't make money long term betting double digit favorites. However,
again this is kind of a guest on my part,
but you think the fallout was for that Penn State loss.
We heard a lot of negativity about Franklin. All this
team chokes in big games. Do they rally around that
and galvanized and be like, We're going to destroy this
Washington team. By the way, Washington, I know travel is.

Speaker 3 (38:12):
A lot for college kids. We haven't seen cross country
a lot.

Speaker 4 (38:15):
They went at Rutgers, lost at Iowa, lost at Indiana lost.

Speaker 3 (38:19):
Well, now you've got to go back across the club.
That's a lot of travel for a college.

Speaker 1 (38:22):
When they went to Rutgers. They were a mistake filled mess.
I think these kids traveling with Iowa, yeah, just they
just not It's too much to travel for kids.

Speaker 4 (38:30):
And I just think Penn State kind of, you know,
not win one for the Gipper, but in battled Franklin
and they win, like twenty seven to eight or whatever
the score is.

Speaker 3 (38:38):
So I laid it with Penn State.

Speaker 1 (38:39):
Two big favorites, Like we both like Penn State to
roll big. Iowa's Iowa's that running back.

Speaker 3 (38:48):
He's good.

Speaker 1 (38:48):
Oh no, he's a real good player.

Speaker 4 (38:49):
But we're seeing in college in pro is the best
teams are starting to separate late in the season.

Speaker 3 (38:55):
And that's why I went favorites last week, and that's
why I like some more favorites.

Speaker 1 (38:59):
Okay, By the way, I watched the second half of
the Celtics Warriors game last night. We were talking about
this is that when you get d Hop from an
organization that's a bit of a mess and you put
him in Kansas City, it is unbelievable how good he
immediately gets. When you take Amari Cooper kind of a
mess in Cleveland and you put him in Buffalo and
you're like, wow, look how good he is? So very interesting.

(39:23):
Buddy Healed and he just bounce around the league. They
bring him into this excellent culture with the Warriors. If
you watched him, he's having an unbelievable year. Steph Curry
and Buddy Healed the number one net rating combo in
the league. Now they're seven and one, they're playing twelve players.
But it is interesting. Curry was great last night. You know,

(39:46):
he was Steph Curry. It was funny because I kept
thinking Boston was going to come back and win this game.
I'm like, there's no way, but I didn't have Jalen Brown.
But it's interesting. Buddy Heal, bounce around the league. Guy,
nice guy, grown up, mature. You put him in this
with Steve Kerr, Steph Curry, he has been hugely important.
It goes back to something we say all the time

(40:07):
is that most of these athletes are young kids that
are in their twenties or early thirties. Where you let
them land, it's it's Lamar Jackson and Baltimore, Joe Burrow
in cheap Cincinnati. It is amazing how often we blame
the player and he's just in a bad spot with
a bad GM and a bad coach and an impulsive owner.

(40:27):
It's great to see Buddy healed now with Steph Curry cooking.
Good guy, always been able to fill it up. But
they are right now. They are. Isn't that funny? They
are the number one combo net rating the league. So
Stephan buddy on the same time.

Speaker 4 (40:43):
Huh, I didn't know this, Buddy heel is shooting fifty
percent on nine to three point attempts a game.

Speaker 3 (40:49):
They're playing thirteen players.

Speaker 4 (40:51):
Double digit minutes again a night now, and I know
they're blasting folks, but Steve Kerr is doing a smart thing.
Whereas you see Reddick is playing Lebron in eight thirty
nine minutes ag game.

Speaker 3 (41:00):
Curry's averaging twenty seven minutes a game.

Speaker 1 (41:02):
He played thirty four last night, but he's not Yeah,
they've merely spread it out. It was a fun game.
It was a fun second half NBA in November, I know,
but he on the excitement. Greg Olsen Next Hour
