You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Matt Hasselbeck now joining us live as you see him
on Monday's eighteen years three Pro Bowls. I don't care
how great a quarterback you are. For years, I always
felt about the Bills. God, they could use a number
one running back and they could use another tight end.
But was interesting yesterday, Matt. They were missing Kincaid, they
(00:45):
were missing key on the rookie receiver, they were missing
their right tackle. They still almost had four hundred yards
against what we perceive as the best DC and the
best defense. Like, I don't know, I feel like this
is an elevated version of the last five years of
Buffalo offense. Do you see that or no?
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Well, you know who they were not missing with Josh Allen,
I mean they had him. I think there's a familiarity
right now with these two teams. Whether it's SPAGS or
Sean McDermott used to coach under Andy Reid, Like these
guys know each other. It's not like you go into
the game plan or kind of going to the week.
You get your game plan book and you open it up,
like who we got this week? Like these these are
the two teams, Like these are the teams you know
(01:25):
you're gonna meet late in the year, and you know
Spags and you know what they're gonna do. You're almost
doing what you think they're not gonna do. You saw
that last touchdown run that you just showed ye kind
of a man coverage situation, Spags go zone. Josh Allen
immediately is like, oh he tried to get me with this,
I'm gonna get him with that. Like they just know
each other like that. He put the cape on and
(01:47):
he did the rest. But an incredible game and I
can't wait for the rematch, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
And yet it's really interesting as many times as you
face Mahomes or Josh Allen, they can still get you
like there's no code, But it is interesting Pittsburgh has
found the code on Lamar like his numbers drop off.
And you know, my guess is because he's such a stylistically,
(02:12):
he's such a unique player. There's a little rubiks QB
thing where Lamar is unbeatable against the NFC because if
you've never faced him, you don't know quite what the
heck that is. But Pittsburgh faces him so often it
does feel like Matt whatever it is, they've kind of
to some degree. The numbers tell you they've figured Lamar out.
(02:34):
What are they doing in Pittsburgh or is it just
Tomlin in the personnel?
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, So like just kind of going back to that
other game just a little bit. I don't think the
Bills aren't intimidated by Kansas City because they feel like, hey,
we have.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Our own Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
So we're not like we have confidence because we know
who we got.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
You like your guy, We like our guy.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
That's the mindset I think when other teams you mentioned
they play Lamar Jackson in the Baltimore Raven and like
it's in their head, they're like, ah, man, crap, dude.
I hope I don't get like embarrassed viral because.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
Lamar makes me look bad.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
You know, he's more athletic, This team's more physical. We
know their identity.
Speaker 4 (03:12):
I hope.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
I don't get the Derrik Hendry stiff part, like that's
what's in everybody's head.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
That's real.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Guys actually talk about that. They say that out loud.
The physicality, the athleticism, it's a fear. Pittsburgh does not
fear that. There's familiarity.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
Once again, I.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Think they've got an elite head coach who sets a tone,
sets a message, a formula technique. He's very good at
fundamentals defensively, and I don't think pitt like yesterday when
I watch that game, and I never really, ever would
would say that I ever feel this way. When I
watched Baltimore, they looked like the less athletic and the
less physical team. And you could point it down to
(03:49):
that last two point play. There was one team that
was physical and there was one team that was less physical.
And that's why I believe the Steelers have their number.
That's why I believe the Steelers played so well. There's
a saying they used to coach high school football with
Rob Nikovich. He would use this Bill Belichick term all
the time. No edge, no chance. If you can't win
(04:10):
the edge, you have no chance on most plays. And
you saw on that play. They didn't win the edge.
They had a wide receiver on a on a defender
didn't win the edge. And then their pullers don't matter.
And I don't care who you have at quarterback if
you don't get the edge. So that was that was
the difference yesterday. I thought physicality. And again, these these
two teams will meet again and we'll see what it
looks like the next time.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
So San Francisco is five and five, and football, more
than any American sport, you get old and banged up
really quickly. You're not you're not getting tackled in baseball
or basketball, although people did kind of tackle shack. But
the point is in football, you can become a you
can be a really good team, and then you can
(04:51):
get really old fast. So McCaffrey comes back, and now
Kittle's out, and I just feel like Matt, the window closed.
It happened with the Seahawks, like all of a sudden,
you're like they're great, and then there's always a corner
hurt or a pass rusher hurt. I don't see a
lot of the special I saw three years ago.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Do you well, they got to stay healthy. I mean,
obviously you don't have Kittle. I think Bosa is a
big thing too. He played just a little bit. I
don't think he's really been healthy now he's gonna.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
Be out for a little while.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Like if you lose your elite pass rusher, Like if
you lose that elite guy that can be an absolute
game changer, like an MVP type guy, it's gonna change
the whole complexion of your team. But I also think
this is the really tough division. Like there's other divisions
that you look around right now, you literally have people
like packing it in, benching their quarterback for financial reasons,
(05:43):
putting guys and stashing them away on the ir signing
people off of other people's practice squads to like sort
of like juice up their roster for the offseason. That's
what's happening in some divisions. That's not happening in the
NFC West. This is a tough division. You've got Arizona,
who's an underrated team very much so. Matthew Stafford and
the Rams are dangerous when they're healthy.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Niners are contender to me.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Gino Smith's fighting for his job for this year and
next year, trying to be the long term solution there.
I just think that this is a very competitive division
that's going to go down to the wire. And you
know that's why the San Franz like that. They don't
look like dominant like they have. I just think the
division is a lot more competitive.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
So I want you Herbert in the first half, Burrow
in the second, put on a clinic. I want what
was awesome. We're gonna show highlights. Just tell me what
you see as an eighteen year quarterback. Start with Herbert
and go to Burrow. What do you see? What do
you love?
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Yeah, Herbert is in a run first offense with Jim Harbor.
There's an identity of formula a plan. And if I
could just use one word, explosives, Like every play was
an explosive. He passed for fourteen first downs yesterday and
they all were like double digits, twenty yards, twenty nine yards,
nineteen yards yards. And to guys like you know, it's
(07:02):
Will Disley, it's Quinton Johnson, it's Lad McConkie. Came through huge,
Like this was like it's just like they're not like
huge spenders at the skill positions, and yet this quarterback
is you know a term I'd like to use amazing.
Marin Arisoce like he was outstanding, and you know, I
think just like the.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Other part of it is he's athletic enough to run,
but he's running with his eyes downfield.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
The whole time that he's looking to run, he's really
looking to pass and if it's not there, then I
continue to run. So he's a great guy for young
quarterbacks to study. He's he really is one of the best.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Okay, now let's talk Joe Burrow. Second half, So.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
Like, totally different. Not a run first team. This is
a pass first team. They use checkdowns to the running
back as an extension of their run game, and so
that's why I think they're most dangerous on.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
A comeback situation.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
But this guy, I mean, listen, whether it's Jamar Chase,
Artie Higgins or really anybody, the chemistry.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
That he has the cess ball, the playground ball.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
You know he's pointing around. Hell, you're double covered. I
don't care. He's inside, one guy's inside, one guy's outside.
Split them, let's find a way. And I think like
the way he does it though, is again with good
fundamentals and technique, two hands on the ball, eyes downfield,
he's looking to run, but he's really not he's looking
to throw and so maybe not as explosive like all
(08:25):
the time. But I would just say, just like justin
Herbert Ice in his veins. I think there were three
times yesterday on fourth down he had huge, huge plays,
huge conversions, touchdowns, and so like, I just think again,
if you're looking for, if you're trying to figure out
what is a franchise quarterback, like, what's the what is it?
It's the ice in their veins. It's the cool, calm
(08:47):
and collected. It's the tangibles, you know, the arm and
the size and the ability, the mobility and all that,
but it's also the intangibles, the way these guys intimidate
the opponent without saying a word, they intimidate the defensive coordinator.
Like the Chargers are up, a lot of people are
usually thinking, oh, with that score, I'm going to bed.
Speaker 4 (09:04):
Most of the country is like not with Joe Burrow,
this game's not over. That's what you saw last night.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
So I think Detroit's offensive roster is virtually perfect. Deep slot, power, runners, twitch, tackles, golf.
Did you ever face in your career a roster and
you were on the opposite sideline and you thought they
just got more good, good dudes, like almost a flawle.
(09:29):
Did you ever face because I think the Lions offensively,
I don't think teams know what to do. It's like
seven Pro Bowl level players, maybe nine guys that can
make a Pro Bowl. Did you ever face anything like that?
Speaker 3 (09:39):
Yeah, no doubt, many many times, many years. When I
was on the Packers, people probably felt that way about us.
But I got to seattle on it was the greatest
show on turf. There were some great teams in San
fran with Jerry Rice and t O and JJ Stokes
and never mind the great players that they had on defense.
I remember playing against the Indianapolis Colts when it was
just a all Hall of famers, White, Freenye, Robert Mathis,
(10:01):
Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, Peyton Manning, Marshall, falk Edger and
James Rather I should say it.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
Just it just was like, you know, what are you
gonna do? Like what can you do?
Speaker 3 (10:11):
And I do remember playing the Baltimore Ravens though, I
remember playing the Baltimore Ravens defense, and I remember Mike
Hombrine one day said said to you know me, he
said to the offense, he said, listen part of the
reason these guys have so much success is people go
in there and they played timid and they.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
Play scared, and they're like, oh shoot, it's the Ravens defense.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
And they don't play well it plays into their hands.
We're going to do the opposite of that. We're going
to cut it loose, we're going to be offensive, we're
going to be aggressive.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
And it really is just like a mindset change.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
And at first when he said it, I thought it
was crazy, But I really think that's the only way
that you can go in and play some of these teams.
You got to kind of beat them at their own game.
And it's a lot easier said than done.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
No, it's I watched Mike Tyson win fights. The minity
enter the ring, and it was the tall, long guys
that would punch back, even guys that were average fighters.
I remember a guy named Mitch blood Green who didn't
last very long. But you had to attack Tyson. If
you didn't attack Tyson, he was a he was a
pit bull on a beach ball. It was over. And
I watched Detroit and it's just so fluid and it's
(11:12):
so effortless, and everybody has time. I do want to
touch on this.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
This is a team because Colin, can I just say
on that real quick, just like I just really think
I think I said it to you first. This is
a situation where these guys have been picked on for
years and years and years, and Dan Campbell has sold
them something and I think everybody, even the fan base,
is bought into it.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
Like here's how we get back.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
We punched the bully in the mouth and it started
on primetime against Dallas and this team really hasn't looked back.
They're the new bully. Like the Detroit Lions have earned
the respect of the entire league. There's no doubt about that.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Yeah, and they're doing it the right way. It's not
it's not. They can be clever and tricky, but they
basically lean on you. I mean they're not they're not
messing around. There's a Baltimore feel to it where it's like, guys,
we're gonna push you around for three and a half hours.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
Right, And the only difference is like they'll casually just
throw in a hook and later for like ten yards
just for fun. Just like they're the brawn, but they're
also kind of the brain and the flash.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
Yeah, I want to end with this, and a lot
of people aren't watching because you know, Herbert and Mahomes
get the love. Bo Nix has had seven straight games
where it's like, oh, yeah, this is the Drew Brees
comp thing. I know you're watching, But Sean Payton text
me this week He's like, he's got a way better
(12:33):
arm than all you analysts think. It's like, this kid
can throw it. And yesterday you saw a couple of
throws by bow. One of them's side arm. Kind of
Stafford like, I know we love Jayden Daniels, but the
last seven weeks, this is the rookie quarterback of note.
If you look at the data, your thoughts on.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
Him, Yeah, he's playing great. This is a match made
in heaven.
Speaker 4 (12:53):
It really is.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Now Listen, the defense is playing well, this special teams
is playing well, and I think that allows an offense
to grow with a young quarter But just the poise,
the experience of both of these guys, whether it's head
coach we're talking about who's done it before with other quarterbacks,
or if it's this quarterback who's had a ton of
reps in college, think he benefited from the time that
he's spent in college with different quarterback coaches, different head coaches,
(13:17):
all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
But no, he's playing outstanding football.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
And I think I mentioned to you before there's some
things that you can say to a quarterback that allow
you to play free. And some people don't know it,
but like some people do, and Sean Payton's the guy
that understands how to talk to a quarterback. One example
that I've used here before is, you know, a lot
of quarterbacks through interceptions on third down because they don't
want to walk off the field.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
They're stubborn, they're arrogant or whatever it is. They're not
humble yet.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
But something that a coach can say is like, hey,
you just get me completions. Let me worry about third
down conversions, like in a sense, like there's another way
to say it, like let our punter punt, let our
defense play with a long field. Like there's things you
can say to a young ququarterback that just like he
just plays free.
Speaker 4 (14:02):
The balls out of his hands.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
He's not taking sacks, he's not turning the ball over
like the coach said, Hey, it's up to you. Mike
Congren used to say to me all the time, you're
an artist, not a blacksmith. I'm going to call the play.
You play, You paint your canvas as you go. This
is your painting, not mine, and so like, it was
some of those things that I think that throughout my career,
when you have a coach that knows how to speak
(14:24):
into you versus as a quarterback versus I'm sure what
other young quarterbacks aren't getting. You see the fruits of that,
And I think bo Nix is off to a great start.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
I want to end with this. I was joking earlier
that we watched Jake, Paul and Tyson and you're like,
you can really see the gap in athleticism. And I
watched Anthony Richardson, who I thought played really well for
the Colts, like really really well, not just running around.
In fact, I thought Shane Steiken should have run in more.
And then I watched Aaron and the gap was like noticeable,
(14:56):
like and I thought to myself, did you have a
moment go to your last year an epiphany you're driving
in it's a practice when you just said maybe it's
a film room and you're like, yeah, I think I'm done.
Because the gap between Anthony Aaron was digging and dugging.
It in that last drive and you're like, man, there
(15:18):
is a gap here that is really noticeable, and I
don't think Aaron's reached it yet. But did you have
a moment.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
Yeah, for sure, Like man, a lot of moments, to
be honest with you. But I remember my last year
in India, I was the oldest quarterback in the league.
I'm forty and I'm playing Jameis Winston, the youngest quarterback
in the league, and I think there was so much
made of it, and I almost got insecure about how
old I was. But I think what I decided to
do was play a different style of football, like literally
(15:49):
just play like a forty year old, not play the
way I had always played. And I grew up a
Red Sox fan. It was Roger Clemens and Bruce Hurst,
and I remember, like some of those guys, when you
lose your fastball, you need other pitch is to go to.
And so I just really I tried to like lean
into what can I do as a pocket passer. How
can I be more of a point guard instead of
thinking that I'm like the quarterback that style of play that.
Speaker 4 (16:11):
I always used to play.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
But for every quarterback that's different and for some guys
it's easier than it is for others. I think what
just speaking on Anthony Richardson though, what stood out to
me is here's a guy that was starting then just
got out of nowhere, benched and then kind of took
a step backwards to take two steps forward. I thought
he looked like a much better, much better quarterback this
(16:36):
time around.
Speaker 4 (16:36):
And sometimes that's the best thing you can do for
a young guy.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
You can have him sit out and watch and watch
from a veteran and say like, oh, okay, I don't
have to try so hard, I can just kind of
do this.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
And I thought that's what you saw from him yesterday.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
Yeah, he made a huge, huge leap and some of
his throws were tough throws downfield. This was not underneath stuff.
And then of course when he's running over people, well.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
Him as a runner is incredible. I think for him
it's going to be consistency. And you know, a lot
of people get wowed by like the deep ball and
all that kind of stuff, but typically in an offense,
the deepest throw on schedule throw is about forty eight
yards from the line of scrimmage. And that's why you
hear guys like Sean Payton saying like O Nix has
plenty of arm.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
He's got all the arm I need.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
But meanwhile, there were guys at the combine throwing it
eighty yards in Lucas oil and shorts, and you know,
scouts are getting excited. But guys like Sean Payton, they
know what the real football. You know what real football
looks like for a quarterback. And so I think consistency
is the thing that Anthony's got to work on in Indy.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
Matt Hasselbeck on a Monday. Always love having you, man.
We all get smarter and I appreciate it. Thank you,
all right, Matt Hasselbeck, eighteen years in the league. Just
a reservoir of information. Drew Brees and Matt Hasselback. JK.
Dobbins are the Charger, stopping by before the end of
the show live in Los Angeles. It's the Hurt.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd week
days noon Eastern, not a em Pacific.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
JK. Dobbins chargers. Good story for him. You know he's
had these season ending injuries. He is now back, he
is healthy. You know it was one of the acquisitions.
Jim Harbaugh calls his brother and said, we need running
back help. JK. Dobbins goes Ravens. By the way. He
played at Ohio State with Joe Burrow. Burrow never started
a game for the Buckeyes, but Burrow was on that
(18:23):
team with JK. Dobbins. JK. Dobbins was a big star
running back out of college at Ohio State. Buckeyes played
Indianda this weekend. Watch out. I'll look at this guy
over here. I just said, you lost Oregon, you lost Indiana.
What do you what do you want me to say?
Maybe we'll squeeze in at number twelve in the playoff system.
J Mack J mackquin the news.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
This is the herd Line News.
Speaker 5 (18:51):
He's just grinning. What are you rooting against the Buckeyes.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
I don't root against Chaos, I root for It's just
I just see Georgia against Tennessee this weekend. I'm wrong.
I thought I had Tennessee being better than this Georgia. Look,
so George's clawbered them and then clawbd Texas. Georgia's got
wins where I'm like, Okay, that's a playoff team. You
don't care what their record is.
Speaker 5 (19:14):
You don't want to see them in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
I do I want to see Georgia in the playoff?
Speaker 2 (19:18):
No?
Speaker 6 (19:18):
No, I mean you're if you're an opponent, you don't
want to see Georgia. That's had a really stacked team.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
They went to Austin and Hugh they could have had
twenty sacks against the Longhorns O line. I mean, I'm
telling you this, that Georgia team. I don't care what
their record is. I don't care. That's a playoff team.
Speaker 6 (19:35):
Okay, all right, Well Klack's watching and he's going to
go off on you Wednesday again.
Speaker 5 (19:39):
Let's start with bo Nicks. He's your favorite quarterback in
the NFL. I'm surprised he hasn't been booked to come
on the show this week. That's going off. I mean seriously.
Speaker 6 (19:46):
Career highs yesterday in passing yards, touchdowns, completion percentage. He
won October Rookie of the Month. And listen, he's closing
in on Jayden Daniels for Rookie of the Year.
Speaker 5 (19:55):
It's become the real race.
Speaker 4 (19:57):
Cass.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
Last seven games he's been, he's over a hundred rating.
Speaker 5 (20:00):
Here's Seawan Payton on his quarterback.
Speaker 7 (20:03):
You know you feel like you know you're you're in
good hands. He's smart with the football. He makes plays
with his feet. You know, there's a lot of times
you're calling place for certain looks, the looks aren't there.
He's got that ability to create and all the while
protect the football.
Speaker 8 (20:22):
I thought he played really well.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
Yeah, yeah, play well.
Speaker 5 (20:27):
What's that smirk about? You love being right? I mean
I thought I loved being that. You love being right?
On bonus when a.
Speaker 6 (20:34):
Lot of football left. But the schedule does look good
for them. They're at the Raiders this week and then
versus Cleveland.
Speaker 5 (20:41):
Should be two wins.
Speaker 6 (20:42):
They have the late by which everybody comes because you're
really exhausted.
Speaker 5 (20:45):
Long season.
Speaker 6 (20:47):
But after the bye Colin Colts, Chargers, Bengals, Chiefs, there
is a world where they go oh and four at
the end.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
And come on, I gotta tell you something. I like
the Colt roster holds are good. No, I think they
got dudes. They got receivers and corners and pass.
Speaker 5 (21:03):
Rushing, a quarterback who can move.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
I thought, I thought Anthony Richardson looks it wasn't just
jink and dunk stuff. That was the other guy. He
was throwing the ball down the field.
Speaker 6 (21:13):
Preseason bow Knicks was plus one thousand to win Rookie
of the Year.
Speaker 5 (21:17):
Currently he is plus three hundred.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
Explain that to the audience.
Speaker 6 (21:21):
So you would have made a lot of money if
you met bo Nicks in the preseason to win Rookie
of the Year.
Speaker 5 (21:26):
Now you win significantly less.
Speaker 6 (21:28):
Jayden Daniels still a considerable favorite minus four hundred.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
So you gotta bet four about Drake May. He showed
you a little something.
Speaker 6 (21:34):
I'm just telling you, Drake May quietly like you feel
better right now if you're a Patriots fan than you
do as a Jets fan going in a next.
Speaker 5 (21:40):
Of course, Drake May looks so good.
Speaker 1 (21:43):
Bow Knicks can is clearly a stud. Drake May can
absolutely play. He's jade, and Daniels is excellent. Caleb yesterday
with a new coordinator, Well, they out played Green Bay clearly.
We May and I think JJ McCarthy look great in
the preseason.
Speaker 5 (21:59):
How about you, guy, Pennicks.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
I don't know yet. I haven't seen enough, but I'm
saying it looks like five of the six quarterbacks drafted
last year. I would bet all work that that's the
TUA class. Remember the TUA Herbert Burrough. I think Jalen
Hurts was later in that class.
Speaker 6 (22:15):
But also Marvin Harrison Junior has played well this season,
brought Bowers. Isn't looking like it was a really good draft,
really good draft, bone Nicks, I gotta give it to you.
Speaker 5 (22:22):
I mean, we had Broncos. Obviously we knew they that
was a layup.
Speaker 6 (22:25):
I didn't think thirty eight to six kind of beat
down Kirk Cousins chase to the bench with.
Speaker 1 (22:29):
And especially when it came off and gutting lost to
the Chiefs where they outplay them.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
I stayed away.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
I told you I like the Broncos in this game,
but I stayed away. I'm like, how are they going
to react? Bonnicks outplays Mahomes and they lose. Are they
going to go into the tank? Emotionally? It was the opposite.
Speaker 5 (22:44):
And you also have to.
Speaker 6 (22:45):
Think, like Sean Payton and Russell Wilson ugly break up,
but both have thrived since, you know, going their separate ways,
which I like, that's a good story for both of them.
Speaker 5 (22:54):
Impressive. Next up, let's go to the Steelers.
Speaker 6 (22:57):
That offense has been scoring a lot more points under
russ so Wilson that it did with Fields. However, yesterday
was a Chris Boswell day. The Pittsburgh kicker went six
for six.
Speaker 5 (23:07):
Mike Tomlin is grateful, but he's also fed up.
Speaker 9 (23:11):
I love Bob, and I'm tired of him getting Player
of a week. He probably got Player of the Week
again this week. He's deserving of it. But it reminds
us of our warts. It reminds us of the work
that we need to we need to do. But man,
no doubt, I'm thankful that he's on our team.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
Uh, they didn't play particularly well.
Speaker 5 (23:29):
You want some numbers, Yeah, third down Pittsburgh four for sixteen.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
Yeah, it wasn't good. Red zone over four Yea Russell
had a terrible pick in the red zone. I mean
they do listen, listen and they won.
Speaker 5 (23:39):
Well, they we do this all the time. Did the
Ravens beat themselves? They had penalties, rady yards, justin Tucker
shanking field goals.
Speaker 6 (23:48):
I mean the guys a legend. Did Derreck Henry not
on the field for the two point conversion? I thought
the Ravens beat themselves. What I know, you don't care
about that stuff. I'm looking at a process, long term outlook,
and that's why I'm not sold on Pittsburgh winning.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
When you can play poorly and win against a team
like Baltimore, you take it and run. Thank you. By
the way, Kansas City beating Denver, you look at Denver
now and go, oh, Denver's pretty good that Kansas City
went over Denver, where we all like they were terrible.
Denver's actually a pretty good football.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
Too, solid neutral field.
Speaker 6 (24:21):
Who do you make a favorite Denver Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
Pittsburgh just be deeper roster. I think that's close.
Speaker 5 (24:29):
Again. I know, Jason, you're being a Pittsburgh hater. You
were wrong. I get all that. But Collin this was
their first division game in the season.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
Ravens were sloppy and by the way, they played a
cleaner game, not perfect. I felt Pittsburgh the whole afternoon
was the better team. Controlled Lamar Russell was. I mean, listen,
that was as bad a pick as Russell's gonna throw
this year in the back of the end zone. Like
it happened. The receiver didn't jump, it happens. I think
if you're Pittsburgh, you feel pretty good about Mike Tomlin
(24:58):
can go. Guys, windn't play well and we beat Baltimore.
I think you can coach hard this week.
Speaker 6 (25:04):
Certain the final story is Anthony Richardson, who got the
dub yesterday. Such a weird thing to have bench run
over DJ Reid. DJ Reid is really good.
Speaker 5 (25:14):
And and he just trucked him.
Speaker 6 (25:17):
Richardson had the best game of his career Colin in completion, percentage, passing, yards, carries.
Two of the carries were for touchdowns, and he talked
about his success after the game.
Speaker 10 (25:28):
I want to say, the most prepared or the most confident,
just the most relaxed I've been. You know, there wasn't
really any pressure on me. I was just out there
taking it one play out of time. That's what I
kept telling my teammates, one player at a time, and
that was gone to get us the victory. And I
think he did today.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
Yeah, good for him. He got benched, he learned. Whatever happened,
you know what happen what the Jets quit?
Speaker 5 (25:48):
But they had nine yards in the first quarter, Colin.
They came out like, oh, we don't even want to
be here. Well, I thought, as Carter missed tackles a
guy cos.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
They go out, they've got Aaron Rodgers, real all timeron
manning teams never quit.
Speaker 6 (26:00):
The Jets had ten first downs in the gate. I
mean the Lions had what like ten in the first
teams never quit, Well, Sala's not. I'll give Kasala credit
for this last year with Zach Wilson.
Speaker 5 (26:12):
That defense didn't quit. They were fighting hard, kept them
in the race until December. No Sala and they're quitting.
You could see that. I mean, they just got into it.
Anthony Richardson how.
Speaker 6 (26:21):
Comfortable he was in the pocket. Anthony Richardson, Kyla, This
is embarrassing for the Jets. But I will say, Richardson,
if somehow the Cowboys win tonight, all of a sudden,
the cults are live in that division and things get
moderately interesting.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
I like the Colts roster better than the Texans roster.
I just like c. J. Stroud. I think he's ahead
of Anthony as a quarterback.
Speaker 6 (26:41):
Well, Texans roster Diggs is done for the season. Nico
Collins has been on the IR He's expected to be
back tonight. I bet his prop no, I kind of
I'm with you on the Colts. I like Richardson a lot.
This is why you let guys play, play through their mistakes.
Stop benching young dudes.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
J Mack with the News.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
Well that's the news and thanks for stopping by The
Herd Line news.
Speaker 1 (27:05):
JK. Dobbins, the former Raven now are Charger and they're
glad he's in La.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
Next one more heard. The Herd streams twenty four hours
a day, seven days a week within the iHeartRadio app.
Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you like.
Speaker 1 (27:20):
Well, it was one for the ages last night. We said,
in my entire life, the Chargers have had all sorts
of good players, but they lose games like last night
where you think they should win it. And here's JK.
Dobbins last night Chargers Radio with the game winner.
Speaker 11 (27:34):
Hand off to Dobbins and there goes Dobbins, hot his
horse to the twenty to the fifteen to the turn
into the episode touchdown showers twenty nine yards.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
And let's bring in JK. Dobbins live. He is joining
a show. There are reports a big smile. You got
in trouble because you didn't sit down. Instead you jumped
into the end zone. Did you get in trouble? Tell us?
Speaker 8 (28:10):
Uh so, no, Look I'll tell you, I'll tell you
what happened.
Speaker 12 (28:12):
So before that play Bozman, Bradley Boseman in the center.
He comes up to me, He's like, f it, score,
just score, just score when you when we get the ball,
just go score.
Speaker 8 (28:25):
I'm like, I'm looking at him like I don't know.
I don't know about that.
Speaker 12 (28:28):
And we had a time out and I went to
the sideline and I asked coach Kyle McDonald, my running
ass coach. I was like, look, if I get the
ball here, can I score? You want me to score?
Speaker 8 (28:39):
He's like he thinks about it. He's like, ethic, score, score,
you'll go score.
Speaker 13 (28:44):
So when I got it, I was like, all right,
I'm taking this day into the.
Speaker 8 (28:47):
House that ain't gonna look it back. And that's what
happened right there. You know, it was a great moment.
Speaker 13 (28:52):
You know, I probably I probably should have set it down,
but but my center told me to score, and I
got the okay from my coach, so I was like,
all right, let's do it.
Speaker 1 (29:02):
Yeah. By the way, I am old school on that.
My take is when you can light a stadium up,
when you can literally it's so definite, just get into
the end zone and score. You guys work so hard,
you take a beating, just get into the end zone.
If you lose that game. It's not on you. Sometimes
there's happenstance in Hail Mary. So good for you. But
(29:22):
it's interesting. You were with a winning organization. So you
play high school, you're a great high school player, you
go to Ohio State, you go to the Ravens and
you're like everywhere you go, well, run this and that.
And then you get trade to the Chargers and they
were really bad last year. Was your first thought? Uh, oh,
what am I getting myself into? You're going from Ohio
State to the Ravens. Were you worried a little bit?
(29:46):
Is this or did Harball make you feel like, Okay,
this is gonna work?
Speaker 8 (29:51):
Oh? No, I was. I wasn't worried. That's why I
came here.
Speaker 12 (29:54):
Actually, I knew that this team had all the talent
in the world, and I know the Harballs there.
Speaker 8 (30:00):
I'm like part of the family.
Speaker 12 (30:01):
So I knew that the culture that we're going to
bring or that coach Jim was going to bring, and
I wasn't worried one bit.
Speaker 8 (30:08):
I knew we're gonna come in this.
Speaker 12 (30:09):
Year and we're gonna do some stuff that is going
to shock the world, you know, because so much talent
on this team, like just watching him from Afar.
Speaker 8 (30:15):
You know, even when I was on the Ravens.
Speaker 12 (30:17):
You you look at the Chargers and you see Derwin Jane,
you see Justin Herbert, you see Joey Bosa, my fellow
buck Eye. You see all these these these players that
are so talented, and you just wonder, like, what is it?
Speaker 8 (30:30):
What is it?
Speaker 12 (30:30):
So whenever I got the opportunity, I was like, you
know what, I'm I'm gonna go over there because I
think I can go help these guys win and I
can go change the change the organization around.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
Justin Herbert. I love him. So he's quiet, he's not
on social media. For somebody that hangs out with him
every day, explain to our audience what he's like, because
he's about as humble as a great athlete in America.
That's tremendous.
Speaker 12 (31:01):
Is Yeah, he's a he's a special kind of human being.
You know, he's amazing. Like he seems quiet to you guys,
but he's definitely not quiet. He's a he's a brother.
He's my brother. Like I love him so much, Like
you could joke around with him. He jokes around, he laughs,
(31:21):
he but when it's.
Speaker 8 (31:22):
Serious, he's serious. For sure. You know he has that.
You know when he's locked in.
Speaker 12 (31:26):
You know he's a beast when he's locked in too,
So you know it's he's versatile. I guess you could
say that he's versatile. He could he can kid around
with you, or he could be like, hey, let's let's
lock in. You know, so I think that's he's a
special human being.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
Explain Jim Harball. Everywhere he goes it could be Stanford Niners,
Michigan Chargers. He not only turns it around, JK, he
does it in six weeks. It's a totally different. I mean,
this team last year was finesse. Now you're as physical
as the Steelers or you're Ravens. What is it with Jim?
What is the secret?
Speaker 12 (32:01):
Sauce man, I honestly can't tell you to seek yourself
because he's he's unique.
Speaker 8 (32:09):
He's he's he's a lot different than his brother.
Speaker 12 (32:12):
You know, as far as the work that we put in,
it's the same, it's almost the same, it's identical. But
him as a person, he's unique. I've never met anyone
like coach Harball. Coach Jim Harbor, I've never met anyone
like him any And I mean that in an amazing way.
Like he's just like I remember in the spring, he's
(32:32):
he's out there working out with us, like getting it in.
He's serious though, like he's not just bull crapping around.
He's actually seriously like he's trying to get this work in,
you know, get better.
Speaker 8 (32:42):
You know, he's different.
Speaker 12 (32:43):
You know, he's genuine and you know some of the
things he says it might come up funny, but it's
so real and it's it's great, you know, and I
love him.
Speaker 8 (32:51):
I love him as a coach and as a person.
He's the best the.
Speaker 1 (32:57):
It's it's it's interesting. And you don't know the history
of the Chargers as much, but if you live out West,
they've had great players forever. But there's a term called
chargering where they outplay teams and lose. I mean that's
literally a term. Again you're with Baltimore, Ohio State that
you guys win. Is there was a time last night
when it was close, it was tied, and you were
(33:18):
so good early and I thought, oh my god, oh no,
they're not gonna But it was funny. Both defenses showed
up late on the sidelines when you took the ball
over late. Was there a sense guys, we're going down Mconkeye, JK,
We're gonna score.
Speaker 14 (33:33):
What was the huddle like, Oh yeah, man, we were comfidying.
We we know, we knew once we got the ball
it was over. What was it, forty five seconds left
on the clock.
Speaker 12 (33:43):
We knew it was over. We knew it was over.
We like lad I called him Ladarius. I ain't gonna
tell you why, but that's his nickname for me. You know,
he's a beast.
Speaker 8 (33:53):
You know. He comes from a winning place too, Georgia.
You know, I think he won a national championship.
Speaker 12 (33:58):
So we got those type of guys on this that
we come from winning pedigree, you winning culture, you know,
and it showed up last night, and no matter what happened,
you know, when they came back on us, nobody flinched.
Speaker 8 (34:09):
Nobody at it than I. We were. We were locked in.
We knew we were gonna go win the game, you know.
Speaker 12 (34:14):
So it's a testament to what what coach Jim has
brought to this team, the culture and everything.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
How special is it for you? You've been hurt back
to back seasons, that you're healthy, you've rehabbed. Rehab stinks.
It's awful. Is this like, does this feel like a
really unique special year for you because the pain and
the injury and the rehab you've gone through.
Speaker 8 (34:35):
Yeah, this this year is a it's a it's a
year granted by the Lord, the.
Speaker 12 (34:43):
Lord Jesus, you know, because you you think about some
of the injuries that have had most people don't come
back from them, and you know they don't and if
they do, they don't form at a high level. You know,
Like I tore my so in like a two year
span we're talking about to my a cl LCL my
hamstring came off. I'm in this kiss and it took
(35:07):
three surgeries just to get back from my knee, you know.
Speaker 8 (35:10):
And then I come back.
Speaker 12 (35:11):
I finally get back healthy, and then in the first game,
I blow my achilles, which a lot of people say, oh,
you can't come back from achilles, Like running backs don't
come back from that, they don't come back from knees.
Speaker 8 (35:24):
And so I'm listening to these guys, but I'm really not.
Speaker 12 (35:28):
I'm not listening to anyone because I just have so
much faith in Jesus and then my work ethic as well,
you know.
Speaker 8 (35:35):
So it's a special year for me.
Speaker 12 (35:38):
Because I finally get to show people like, hey, whenever
I'm healthy, I might be one of the best running
backs in the NFL. You know, give them the volume
and all that stuff. You know, I might be one
of those guys, you know. And I'm finally getting to
prove it getting I'm finally getting a chance to prove it.
Speaker 8 (35:54):
And I'm gonna keep getting better. That's the thing. Like
it's just the first year. I tore my achilles last year.
This is my first year.
Speaker 12 (36:01):
Back, so I got lots of room to improve. So
it's only going to keep getting better.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
Only a minute left. I just listen if you when
you lose to the Hoosiers this weekend. I don't want
you to get all bummed out. You know what, They're
really good. They're really They score a lot of points. JK,
are you ready for a potential loss?
Speaker 12 (36:22):
Let me ask you something. Yeah, what are the ranked
opponents that y'all played? Who are the ranked opponents that well,
Indiana Hoosiers.
Speaker 8 (36:31):
No, there's none. Huh.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
Well, I mean they haven't played though they haven't played
the hardest schedule. I admit that. Okay, I'd admit that
it hasn't been the hardest schedule.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
Just give me a score.
Speaker 12 (36:43):
So I got I got the Buckeyes winning BYuT fourteen points.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
Man at least, okay, thirty four to twenty ish kind
of thing, that kind of thing.
Speaker 8 (36:52):
Yeah, oh yeah, yes, sir. All right, well, what what's
you think? What's your think?
Speaker 1 (36:58):
I think it's I think it's I think it's thirty
twenty eight. We're out of time. I gotta go. Great
having you on the show.
Speaker 8 (37:13):
Money, Thank you for having me.
Speaker 1 (37:17):
All right. JK. Dobbins, what a good guy. Talked to
him before the before the thing. He I mean, listen, man,
that guy's story is all guts, like there's there's a
lot of guys would have packed it in. He didn't
walk off, won it. Good for him. Hope you enjoyed
today's show. We'll see tomorrow live in La. It's the Hurd.
