Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
For the football Championship. That should always do the expectation.
All right, man at you go ahead.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast, brought to you
by our friends and partners over at Brightling. Today is
today I get my Seattle Seahawks Brightling, and before that,
I have an incredible guest defensive end for the Seattle Seahawks,
u China Nuwo Su. He's been incredible in his career
and I cannot wait to see him back on the
field in full force this Sunday night. It's gonna be incredible.
(00:40):
I appreciate you joining me, brother. I'm so happy to
see you back on the field. How you feeling going on,
miss Sharonan, I'm good. I'm good, just happy to be
back out there for good Man. And we were just
talking about this before we started. But it's a grown
man game on that D line O line, Like, it's
a whole different game than we play on the manageres
And so you got to you got to take your
time coming back. You said you feel good, how you
(01:03):
feel you know with your second week of able to
you know what I mean, getting contact and ramping it up.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Yeah, definitely taking a step up this week.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
You know when that first game back after however, many
release something out, you know, any after he knows it's tough,
you know, trying to get back into rhythm, just trusting
yourself again and having confidence, you know. So I used
that last week kind of that confidence builder, and I
feel more and more confidence on going since next week against.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Christ Look, I talk to people about this all the
time because I've been in competition committee meetings and you know,
as a vice president of the NFLPA, and it's really
frustrating because they talk about all this health and safety stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
They talk about it all the time.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
And when I sit there and say, all right, health
and safety, right, no blind side blocks, no, you know
what I mean, hitting the offense up high, no hitting
them down low? So then why are y'all letting our
d lineman get chipped? Like are they're engaging, they're hand
on hand, and y'all letting them get rip checked by
a guy they're not looking at dicous. It's ridiculous and
(02:02):
they won't change it. And they're like, well, you know
that's that's the protective quarterback. I said, So are we
protecting everybody or just some people?
Speaker 1 (02:08):
I say the same thing. Man.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
They're making a game really hard for defensive players now,
really with the dude, with all the rule changes and
the way we got to tackle and the way we
we'd hit them delivering the hit. You know, it's always
the revolving door. But you know, we got to adjust
and got to keep playing.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Man, it's it's been so much nonsense.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Even even I just saw something a couple of minutes
ago about Kirby Joseph and you know, some I don't
know what fan, it was a Green Bay Packers fan,
I guess, sitting there calling Kirby Joseph dirty because he's
hitting tight ends low. He hit them at their needes
because he's a small safety and they two sixty five
and they're like, he should be hitting them at the waist.
I said, y'all, y'all didn't lost, y'all.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Damn minds. Y'all have gone outside. Y'all minds. Y'all. Now,
y'all want us to aim for a box. This small
wild dude is moving up and down and and and
in and out and left and right and so.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
But but sorry, I'm going on the ram because because
the way you got hurt was another one in the plays,
and you know, I don't even want to hear you
know what I mean, make you say anything about it,
because you've already spoke your piece on it. But I
get to speak my piece now. Like that was some
bull That was some total bull like And if it
happened on the other side, they'd be so quick to
call us dirty and so quick to say, oh man,
we deserve to be suspended. But when that play happens,
(03:20):
they're just like, it's part of the game. What you mean,
what you mean is part of the game. I'm out
for howy many games? And he gets to keep playing
over a week preseason play right?
Speaker 2 (03:32):
I agree?
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Sorry, that was just frustrating. Sorry I went on my rant.
But how you feeling about this week? A big, big
game coming up? Obviously again another game, y'all got to
have two game lead and division. Uh it just seems
like this defense and his team overall has started to
figure it out.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Yeah, yeah, we are starting to figure out, you know what.
Trust seeing a lot more.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Everybody's playing together, communicating out there around, having fun.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
So you know, we're treating every.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
Week like it's a playoff game at this point, which
is pretty much is if we want to secure the
division title, which we haven't done here since you know,
twenty twenty. I believe, so everybody's on the mission right now.
We see the bigger picture. Everybody's hungry, we all believe
in and trusting stuff. We just got to keep him doing.
We're doing fundamentally sound technique, sound, you know, just homing
on the basics and we can go far.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
There was a lot of concern when when when you
know they they traded Jerome Baker or they you know
they traded him, They cut Tyrell Dotson and then they
brought in Ernest Jones and elevated Teres Knight, And now
it just seems like since they made those changes, that's
when the defense is really taking off. Ernest Jones just
looks like a revelation. I mean, for a guy to
come in during a bye week and fit in and
(04:40):
the way he has, I'm surprised they ain't stamped the
sea on his jersey yet because he just seems to
be making that kind of impact weekend and week out.
You have to turnover and it just seems like he's
making the right fits. He's flying around, he's playing fast,
The young rookie is playing fast as well, talk about
their impact.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Yeah, you've just been doing a great job. Happily we
got them.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
You know, he's he he brings that sense of level
like levelheadedness and calmness to the defense. I feel like
we were missing, especially in the middle linebacker position, you know,
and he just knows how to communicate. He knows how
to talk to guys. You knows how to you know,
get guys going and you know, to have like that
confidence building right in the middle of the defense is
very important. And he compliments Tyee the rookie really well.
(05:20):
You know, he gives him the confidence to keep keep playing.
We've always knew he had the talent, and you know,
all those early reps he got in the camp, he
was running with the ones a lot, you know, running
with the twos almost every rep in come out in
training camp.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
You know, those are paying dividends. Now, you know, he's
got the taste.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
He's he's seen, he's had a lot of preseason action
and his confidence is.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Just you know building.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
He always knew, you know something, guy always got to
stay ready, and that's just the type of guy he is.
He stayed in playbook, you know, stayed in the recovery rooms,
keep his body on tight, and now he's producing at
a high level.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
It's gonna be It's gonna be your first game, I
guess in a long time playing with the big cat,
and he seems to have found his legs about him.
Been making a lot of plays, forcing a lot of
double team, which is gonna make your job a whole
lot easier. And how exciting is that, you know, to
play with a guy like that who's gonna gonna free
you up to get the one on ones and really flourish.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Like you deserve.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Yeah, I mean I haven't played with him since college.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
You know, when they traded for him last year, I
was unfortunately hurt then, so I couldn't play with him
last year. And so you know, now you're being able
to play with a guy like that. It was just
so dominant in the middle, such a force in the middle,
like he said, it makes sure the edge guys are
jobs a lot easier in the run game and in
the past game. All the attentions going to him and
allows us up to you know, do a lot of
different things. And you know, he covers up a lot
(06:34):
of different mistakes that people make, and you know, He's
just like be a race strip.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
And I'm so happy to have him.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
And we're gonna either continue playing like he is going
down the stretch.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
You've been here for. Kobe Bryant's like resurgence, you know
what I mean. His adjustment is draft and then his
changed to safety now and he's starting to really turn
it up a notch. You know, a big, huge interception
against Arizona last week. He had one in the Atlantic
game as well. He just seems to be playing with
a lot more confident And then every time you look up,
Devin Witherspoon is somewhere somewhere calls.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
And have it. What do you think you were about
to bring to this defense?
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Because you've obviously been the most consistent pass rother, the
best defensive playmaker before you got hurt coming back in
How excited are you to just get back out there
and immediately make an impact in a huge game.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Yeah, I'm hungry.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
You know what what Bigger station should do with the
Sunday night football when the world was watching, you know,
So you know, I'm ready, ready to go out there
and bring my playmaking skills that I know I can
bring out there and some team to help this defense win.
You know, we're deep on the D line, and just
adding an extra value like myself back in that rotation
is going to be able to cause having for offensive
lines and you know offensive coaches and you know quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
So I'm just ready to go out there and contribute.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
It's right on time. It's right on time.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Now I'm gonna take you back because you just brought
up sc and you know, our whole pac twelve is
gone now at all. I mean, that's that's a whole
story for a different day. But what's wrong with that? See,
because it's disappointing. Man, that's an la kids like I
don't you know, Yeah, y'all, y'all let me down. You know,
I know, Stanford, we're gonna struggle. You know, we all
(08:09):
have a hard enough time when it was the regularly
in c DOUBLEA. Now they're paying kids. We can't keep nobody.
But y'all, y'all supposed to be holding it down.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Yeah, I'm just as confused as you and the rest
of the world. Man, I don't know what's going on.
They had I think Cable's first year. I think they
went like eleven and three or something like that. But
still was disappointing because you know, this standards when you
get you know, a guy like that, coach, like that,
quarterback like that, they're sposed to the college playoffs, you know,
at least you know, and not to see that happen,
you know, these last one three seasons now, which is
(08:37):
very disappointing. And I don't know, I don't know, I
don't know what's going on over there. Hopefully they can see,
you know, get some more players next year in the
portal and you know, try to build from there. But
we'll see.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
It's such a different landscape in college right now. Man,
could you imagine playing in that and you getting paid
and you get to tell coach hey, hey, boys is
telling coaches hey, y'all, didn't my checking it's clear this week.
I ain't practicing to day, y'all. Let me know when
my check clear, and I'll be out there like it's
just silly. Yeah, it's Philly. I'll totally again.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
You know, when we played, it was for the love
of the game. You know, we wanted to be able
to play on Sundays. You know, we wanted to go
out there and make a name for ourselves. But now
you know, kids there who's paying me the most money.
You know, I'll transfer here because they'll pay me some
more money. Uh, you know, I'll stay. I'm not gonna
go to the leagues, and I'm gonna try to make
some more money here, which is fine. I understand that.
But at the end of the day, the goal was
always to play on Sunday nights.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
The d lineman from NC Bear Bear Alexander like it
transferred again. They said, the boy didn't been there four
different high schools in high school, and now you're.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Going on this third different college.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
I'm like, at some point, like, you're gonna have a
hard time getting drafted because the team that drafts you're
gonna be like, you can't.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
You can't leave. You didn't stay nowhere more than a year,
Like and trust you, They trust you. I don't care
how talented you are.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
But congratulations on your Walter Payton Manity Year nomination. You
obviously had your You've had a tremendous impact. Tell me
how much you know we're giving back to the community
and being able to help those that are less fortunate
than yourself means to you.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
It means a lot.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
You know, growing up, I didn't I didn't really have
you know, those resources or you know, guys come back
and talk to me and give back and do things
in the community for me. So I always knew if
I was in a position to be able to give back,
that's one thing I would do, whether that's to the
local community, whether it's to my high school or whether it's
here in Seattle. You know, I've always trying to make
it a points wherever I am trying to help somebody need,
(12:09):
especially the youth. I feel like the next generation is
going to be able to shape this world. So why
not start there and just work my way up so
anyway I can get back to the kids, get back
to the youth anyway possible. That's what I'm about.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
That's good man, it's it's always the best feeling be
able to give back. You know, as a kid, I
grew up in a tough neighborhood, and you just you
really understand the impact that one person telling you that
you matter means, you know, just telling you you matter,
just telling you like you got a chance, that you're special.
And you know, I had a number of high school
coaches that I would attribute that to that that really
(12:43):
I feel like, unlock my potential. They were the ones
that told me like, man, I see something special in you,
and then you feel like you got to do everything
in your power to make them right. So just know
that your impact is reaching kids, you know, even the
kids you probably have never seen. You know, it's having
a tremendous positive impact. Right, So what's the what's the
next thing? I always want to want to ask you this,
(13:04):
y ten?
Speaker 4 (13:05):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
I just want some change, you know, coming from my
old team.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
I was like, you know, let me get a fresh start,
you know, new team, new environment, let me just try
something different. I was like I always wanted I wanted
number seven, but you know had it. That was my
number in high school. So I was like ten, ten
sound pretty cool. I'll take that all right, right right.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Right, because you're a ten SAC guy. Yes, plus you
know ten SAC plus. I don't want to disrespect nobody.
That's cool. I thought it was gonna be some crazy story,
like people always ask me why why you picked number
twenty five, and like I had some crazy cool story
to it, and I was just like, well, when I
got drafted, they had one twenty number open and I
wasn't wearing thirty. I was not wearing no thirty. They
(13:48):
gave me thirty to begin with, and then they drafted
Mark Lagreed like two picks later, and they gave him
twenty five. I called e K so quick, I said, hey,
I got drafted higher, right, Yeah, yeah, I say, yeah,
give me twenty five.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
Give him thirty.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Walking out there with thirty getting cooked, No, no, no
offense to everybody that we're thirty.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
But it's tough out there wearing thirty.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Just y'all know, y'all get a few extra targets every
game because y'all got thirty on. So what's your expectations
for yourself? You know, obviously we're at a later part
of the season, but you're coming in with fresher legs,
you know, fresh legs. What expectations do you have for
yourself at this point of the season the team, I know,
playoff aspirations, you know, winning the division gives you a
(14:33):
home game in front of the twelves, and you've come
a long way since playing in what were they calling
that stadium now because they get a stub Hub.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
I think it's still stub.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Hub right, well, nobody playing it no more so we
ain't paying attention. But you go from playing in that
stadium to playing one of the loudest stadiums in sports.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
How different is that for you?
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Yeah, that's the first part of your question.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
It's been a long season, you know, I've done with
a lot of adversities over the really the last year.
So my main goal is just to make it the
rest of the season healthy, you know, God willing, and
just do my best to get back to where I
you know, what I know I could be, and that's
play making and making plays on that field, you know.
So that's that's definitely my goal, no matter how it
is in the run game, pass game, supporting the teammates,
(15:19):
whatever it may be. That's just my number one goal.
And yet being able to play in front of these crowds.
Just this crowd is insane. You know, that's really our
secret weapon. You know, you've been the best of the best,
so just being able to get back in that crowd
behind you and then you know, just feeding off them
to be able to go out there and have fun
and make plays. You know, that's what it's all about.
And I can't wait for that this Sunday night.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Yeah, oh, it's gonna be. They're gonna be rocking in
there Sunday night.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
And you know, as a d lineman, it's always fun
because they got to go silent and count everything, so
you you just got to watch the ball at that point.
It's years back. They're gonna be great for that. They're
great in playoff games. We've had many games where you know,
the stadium's rocking and shaking and all that, and people
are like, you must love that.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
As a defender, I'm like, I mean sometimes, but you.
Speaker 6 (16:03):
Can't talk either. You can't communicate nothing. And then they'd
be like, why did y'all have that bus? It's because
I was trying to tell him to switch. He couldn't
hear me, and we looking at each other and they
snaffed the ball.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
Yeah, but it's more positive than negatives, definitely.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
So I want to know, because I don't I don't
sit in the locker room, I don't sit in the meetings.
How is Mike McDonald in these meetings?
Speaker 2 (16:27):
How is he?
Speaker 3 (16:27):
Because we had y'all at Thursday night and it just
seemed like he was just so dejected after a San
Francisco forty nine ers lost that Thursday night, and then
y'all come into come out of the buy and he
is a totally different guy. It's such a such a turnaround.
And it seems like whatever he said to the guys,
whatever he did during a bye, and he made some
moves roster wise, but it just seems like schematically they're
(16:52):
playing better offensively, they're playing better at the offensive line
is playing better. You know, a few changes obviously at
Abraham Lucas brings a different element to that offensive line
than they had before.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
But what what what has changed so much?
Speaker 1 (17:07):
Yeah, Mike, Mike's just being a great leader.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
Honestly, you know, it's coming a long way from you know,
training camp when we first met him to now, you know,
we're starting to get more accustomed to him and how
his style is and everybody loves it.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
You know.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
It's kind of like it's kind of like Mike's funny man.
He tries to be funny, but it's like kind of corneous.
But we all love it though, because that's just who
he is, you know. So he play for him. He said,
you get some three half times. He just ain't gonna lie. Man.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
He knows how to get those guys fired up in the.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
Locker room, and he just it's just like so smart,
you know. He just believes in everybody, constantly encourage everybody,
shows us what it looks like when we've done it
for you know. He knows how to keep guys positive
and keep guys fired up, and he's so smart coming
up with different tactics way to win. You can see
he actually cares and he tries, and all the coaches
staff put in a lot of effort, you know, so
that's all going into it. And they made a big
(17:55):
change in the bye season, in the bye weekend, and
the message is carried on so far.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
It's it's carried on, and y'all look really good. Y'all.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
You've got a lot of young talent, a lot of
guys stepping up and and to get you back. At
this point of the season, it's like a whole nother
big time free agent signing mid season, Like you're about
to bring an incredible element to this defense. I'm excited
to see it. I wonder, I wonder, what's been the
toughest like offensive line matchup that you've had in your career,
Like the toughest that you've had to deal with where
(18:24):
you like, after the game, you were like, I don't
want I don't want to as the city to do
it again.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
I'll probably said, well, I've probably seen the toughest matchup
I've had in my career. I'll probably say Trent Williams. Man,
he's a dog, he's tough.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
To be man.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
He's really he's really a smart athletic and strong man.
He just been in the league for so long that
he has all those vet moves and stuff. So you know,
it's always a good matchup going up against him because
you know, I know how to get him sometimes and
more times than not he's probably gonna win. But I always,
you know, give him my best with him, and he
gives me a good challenge and makes you to be
a better player. You know, going up against guys like that,
(19:00):
So that's probably like my favorite matchup, you know, going
on looking forward to the during of the years.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
Yeah, I mean, he's one of the best to ever play,
so I'm not mad at that. That's that's one of
the He's a behement of a man. You hear about
all the accolades, and to hear it from you, it's
it's it's an incredible challenge. But I've seen you beat him,
so that has to feel good too. I'm just happy
you're back, man. I'm happy to see you back on
that field after this injury, happy that you're going to
(19:29):
make a positive impact on this team, and happy to
see all the great things you're doing for the community.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
Brother.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
Absolutely, thank you. Yeah, no problem, no problem. Well I
won't hold you up. I know you've got to get
more rehab to do and more things to do with
your off day. I really appreciate you taking the time
out of your day to spend time with me and
have this conversation. I look forward to seeing you on
out on that field and we'll have another conversation before
y'all hit those playoffs, all right, sir, I appreciate you,
all right, be appreciate you. The volume
