Blazing five. I love the picks Jmac so many. You know,

(00:51):
I gotta tell you this. Next Friday, Notre Dame, Indiana,
the college football playoff starts. See you look at this
weekend and you're like, well, let's say it's the calm
of the storm, but the la rams separated from the
old Brockster.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
I'm mentally ready for the brock Perty slander. And listen,
there's no defense.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
He didn't play great.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
What do you want me to do?

Speaker 2 (01:13):
So?

Speaker 1 (01:13):
But that's not the lead story today. The lead story
is de Bo Samuel, look at me, take care of me.
And that's what the San Francisco forty nine ers did.
Spent the early portions of the game trying to make
sure Deebo is happy, just like Brandon I. You same
thing to the Niners held out when he came back

(01:35):
six games, no touchdowns. Stop pandering the wide receivers, forty
nine ers, build your O and D lines. Your best
receiver is a seventh rounder who came into the league
with no ego and still doesn't have one, Juwan Jennings.
You start drafting these wide receivers in the first and
second round about a couple of years in. Get me
the ball. Dee Bo isn't washed, but he's not what

(01:58):
he used to be. And clearly, inarguably brock Purty was
forcing the ball to Debo Sweeney to make sure he
was okay. Don't be shocked if AJ Brown and Jalen
hurts and they waste a first half doing the same
damn thing as they face the Steelers, and if Pittsburgh

(02:19):
wins in Philadelphia's first quarter and a half is trying
to get Aj Brown the ball. That's what happened last night.
Brock Purty went into that game. And in fact, I
looked this morning. First twelve offensive plays four to twelve
drawn up for Deebo. You should have had eight to
twelve drawn up for George Kittle. He's still elite. Kittle's amazing,
and you're having to take care and babysit and coddle.

(02:42):
This is not the NBA, it's the NFL. You play
to win the game. And it was an ugly night,
it was a wet night. Matt Stafford couldn't do anything
right in the first half, but the Rams came to
play a game and win, no agendas. Not trying to
play kid anybody. I mean, listen, Cooper Cupp could be upset.
He's been unseated by Pooka Nakua. Clearly Cooper Cup blocks
as much as he goes out for a pass. But

(03:04):
it was Matt Stafford, Kyron William, Sean McVay, Cooper Cup,
haven Stein all about winning a game, no agendas. Stafford
had a very bad opening half, right, I mean, he
almost threw about nine picks, but you know he did
at halftime They're like, you know what, let's just run
the ball. Let's just run the ball. Did Pooka get upset.

(03:25):
Did anybody pount did anybody go into the locker room?
The Rams came out and said, it's all about ball.
Let's just run the football Stafford was off his game,
and then eventually Matt a couple nice escapes, Kyron Williams
terrific young player, just a terrific young player, Blake Corham
getting snaps, Pooka, Cooper cup. I mean, it was just
all about football and the Niners. By the way, here's

(03:47):
another thing about the Niners. That Devondre Campbell, a linebacker,
because Drake Greenlaw was healthy, came in and played and
was great, and they let him be the starter. And
Devondre Campbell pouted, refused to go to the game. In
the third quarter, pouded took his ball and went home.
Can you imagine that? Suddenly, now San Francisco's not just

(04:08):
old and expensive and brittle. They got a culture issue,
got Debo demanding the ball. You had Brandon Ayuk holding
out a camp You got Campbell the linebacker. Does he
think he's Fred Warner? Does he think he's Drake Greenlaw?
Hafunga Vosa? How many Pro Bowls? I mean, give me

(04:29):
a break. So you know, it was a classic example
of this. By the way, a very young Rams team,
that defense. Nobody's making any money. That Rams team, it's
like a college team. No egos on the road, sloppy
and wet, ugly first half. I think even their kickers

(04:51):
are rookie. I mean, everybody's young on the Rams, except
old Matt Stafford, who was absolutely great when it mattered
the most. And by the way, way the Rams now
are finally healthy. They're getting their tight end. They're number
one tight ends coming back, so the old line's finally healthy.
And by the way, Stafford wasn't sacked. When Stafford isn't sacked,

(05:12):
the Rams have won ten straight games. So this Ram
team no turnovers last night, no sacks, but more importantly,
no pouting, no taking my ball and going into the
locker room, no building a game plan to play kate
and pander to a wide receiver who's not what he
once was. Here's a couple of the Niners, George Kittle,
who is still amazing in Charvarius Ward talking about Devondre

(05:35):
Campbell quitting the mid game.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
It's more of a one person making a like Mooney
said of a selfish decision and I'm with Mooney on that,
and I have never been around anybody that's ever done that,
and I hope I'm never run anybody that does that again.

Speaker 5 (05:52):
So for him to do that, listen, that's some subtle
stow to me Kamaki like it's probably going because so
you know it is what he is.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Say this for Devo. Devo didn't go into the locker room. Now,
I had a terrible drop. I could not as a
football coach. I do not believe the culture of the NFL.
They don't do load management in the NFL. They don't
do that. You play hurt. Everybody's hurt. By week three.
Everybody's backup quarterbacks are banged up. For practice, everybody's banged up.

(06:23):
In the NFL. The Niners have great linebackers. The guy
that left is their third best linebacker. But to quit
on your team in the middle of it, bye bye,
take care see you. I mean, Deebo. I don't like
that stuff either, but he's playing. He's not what he
once was. But you can't quit in your team. Can't
do it. Can't do it. Meanwhile, yesterday I came on

(06:51):
the show and sometimes I see the comments. You folks
can be a bit hurtful, I suggested, I thought it
was just reasonable. Well, I am America's honesty broker. I said,
I think Belichick's going to stay one year at Carolina,
get exhausted by the tedium which is known as college athletics,
and go back to the NFL, because I do think

(07:12):
next year he'll get a job offer. And this is
all rehabbing college TV. So did you see the little
addendum in Bill Belichick's contract the Carolina job. It's it's
just a little footnote. What's that in fine print? Belichick

(07:34):
can leave June second this year back to the pros.
Now he's not going to this year. Nobody hires a
football coach June second, But Bill Belichick can enter the
portal as they say June second. And that may be

(07:55):
a little footnote, little fine print, but I can assure
you the legal teams fought over that Bill demanded that
was in his contract, and Bill got it because this
job the top agents in college football. I noted this yesterday.
Jimmy Sexton's the powerhouse. He's not cented his best clients

(08:17):
for this job because of the administrative chancellor, academic athletic
you know, Fissiers in the athletic department. So basically, Belichick
can be off tobacco road before he's finished with his
first cigarette. This addendum is not about this year. He's

(08:37):
not going to lead now. My prediction, he'll stay a
year and Belichick goes to the NFL and will get
an offer because there's seven openings a year. And Belichick
had a quote yesterday he said, it kind of came
to me, this college football thing. No, it did not.
It did not come to him. The NFL left him,
and so he's a pro football coach and he he
is going to get an offer next year, in my opinion,

(08:59):
and he'll and all this for Belichick has been about rehab.
So Brady leaves and win a Super Bowl. Belichick looks
out of touch. Matt Patricia to offensive coordinator. So then
you go into rehab. So what does he do. He
gets on TV and Bill smiling. He's fun, He's got

(09:20):
fun stories. He is showing the NFL I'm not the
old kerb Mudge and you think I am. Then he's
got the young girlfriend. He goes to college. He looks youthful.
It's fun. He's again showing the market, Hey I'm not
some old crusty guy. I'm going to relate to kids
and the transfer portal. I am here to stay except

(09:41):
for the fine print. The fine print says he can
get into the portal June second, and you fight over
stuff like that. The legal team spent hours on stuff
like that, sometimes a day or two on stuff like that.
Here was Belichick yesterday when asked about it. Belichick basically said,

(10:03):
I did not come here just to leave. Then why
is that in the contract? You think he asked for
that in Carolina said sure, we'll pour thirty forty fifty
million into it and you could leave it in an hour.
It's not the way it works. I've had a few
contract negotiations, so anyway that I thought was something the details.

(10:30):
Always look at the fine print and there you go.
You know it's interesting. I am going to talk about
brock Perty now. Jason. I want you to get ready
because if I've said before in our business, you know
this to be true. In our business, you and I
can not love a player and were immediately marginalized as haters.

(10:52):
And that's not the case. Like you sometimes you could,
like I've always said, I really really like Jason Tatum
and the Celtics. I don't love it Leyden Games. I
think Jalen Brown's the guy I trust to want the
ball more, and he's shown it as an MVP of
the Eastern Conference and of the Finals, in the two
biggest series in the Celtics in the last decade. Jalen

(11:13):
Brown was viewed by the team the coaches as the
guy that we give the ball to. So I don't
hate Jason Tatum. He's one of the ten players in
the NBA I would start my franchise with. But I
would also put Jalen Brown on that team too because
he is a killer Laighton Games and so with a Brock,
Purty and Deck. I've never hated Dak. He is Kirk

(11:33):
Cousins with a star in his helmet. That's what he's
always been. He's Kirk Cousins with a star in his helmet.
You can win a division, you can go on winning streaks.
The intangibles are amazing quality guy, smart guy, leadership qualities.
But let's not pretend it's Mahomes. So you can't pay
him like Mahomes and truth is both cousins in Minnesota.

(11:54):
He got paid more than he was probably really his
real value was and Dak the same. Now the Cowboys
are out of money. Now here's where San Francisco is
in a spot. They haven't written the check yet to
their Kirk cousins or their deck, So I want to
discuss that coming up.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and Noone Eastern nn AM Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
This could be a rough three to four minutes. It's
time for a little brock Perty discussion. Jaymaca brock talk
if you will. During the holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sometimes
it gets uncomfortable when you talk politics and purty. Thirteen

(12:39):
starts this year, barely averaging a touchdown pass a game
with one of the best scheme coaches in the league,
one of the great tight ends of all time, who's
still outstanding, the best seventh round receiver in football maybe
ever in Juwan Jennings, who PFF has is a top
ten receiver in the league with DEBO and a top

(12:59):
twelve offensive line in review. Great head coach, great tight end,
first ballot Hall of Famer, two good wide receivers, stable
offensive line. Thirteen games he is looking for the bag
fifteen touchdowns, nine picks. Bruh, you're gonna pay that fifty
eight million. You're the Cowboys and he's playing his worst

(13:22):
football when you need him to play his best football.
In his last four starts, in three of four of
those under two hundred yards. But this is really interesting.
I know what you're saying. There is no McCaffrey. Let's
give you a couple of career for rock pretty moments.

(13:43):
And you saw this with Stafford last night when the
fit was hit in the shan Stafford was great brock
Purty trailing by a possession in the fourth quarter. In
his career, including the playoffs, has a fifty seven passer rating.
That is who who we is brought pretty tighter trailing
in the second half in his career has a passer

(14:06):
rating under seventy. And the Niners are on the precipice
of paying him sixty million dollars. You'll be a more
functional Dallas Cowboys who acknowledged yesterday we're still out of
money for the foreseeable future. You watch that game in
the second half, whether stunk quarterbacks win games like that,

(14:31):
that was Stafford saying, hey, let's run the ball. Stafford
had four or five throws, one big one over the top.
I mean Stafford all night had one huge throw and
a couple important throws. But and once you pay purty,
you'll have to move off key pieces that were the
key components to the infrastructure, which is given the illusion

(14:52):
that he's elite. I know, Wicked is really popular right now,
Wizard of Oz behind the curtain vibe going on, pull
back the curtain on Brock. Pretty look at those career
stats again. Oh he doesn't have Christian McCaffrey. Yeah, his
lineup isn't completely stacked with Hall of famers. Matt Stafford

(15:14):
last night finally had an offensive line, but Cooper cup
has regressed. He's got Pooka but no really big time
tight end and honestly a defense full of kids. And
it was Stafford late who made the two or three
big throws. Give Stafford the keys to any car he wants,

(15:39):
any car, big throws, key escapes, no turnovers, avoiding sacks.
Here was Brock after.

Speaker 6 (15:47):
I had to be better for this team and didn't
play my best tonight. So I got to watch the
film and then see what happened and where my mindset
was at with each play. But I just feel like
I had a lot of players left out there that
I could have made for our team. The defense and
special teams played so good, and you know that's that's
what's hurting me is I just feel like I failed
the team.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
Once again, pretty average. And that has been my brock talk.
Jmack with the news.

Speaker 2 (16:18):
This is the Herdline News.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
Okay, all right, have your moment, enjoy it.

Speaker 4 (16:25):
Let's start.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
Let's start with the Eagles Gollin.

Speaker 3 (16:28):
It's been a drama filled week for Jalen Hurts and
aj Brown, the crux of the drama steming from Philly's
poor pass attack. They've thrown the fewest passes in the
league this year. But Jalen Hurts says, all that matters
is winning.

Speaker 5 (16:43):
It's not any difficulty in winning and when that's your
when that's your main thing, and that's truly my main thing.
Definitely put an importance on what winning and what that is.
But but also as you grow and as you evolve,
the long and you can saturate your I in something
you know, the more comfortable you can get in it.

Speaker 1 (17:07):
Very interesting. I like his leadership skills too. I hope
he doesn't spend the first four series, trying to make
AJ Brown happen.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
Oh, I told you that was gonna happen, Yester. Remember
I said AJ Brown prop. Remember I said Kittle props,
kittle prop. One of them got over the other. He
landed on four catches. But I don't know the line
has gone up in this. I guess the Eagles are
saying all the right things and people are buying it.
From four to a half yesterday to five and a half.

Speaker 1 (17:33):
Now, I'll take Pittsburgh. All take Pittsburgh, you go ahead,
just like yesterday. I'll take the less needy team who's
just going for the W. You know, football is Baseball
is an individual sport. You go to bat and you're pitching.
Even though that seems selfish, that's how it's the infrastructure.

(17:54):
Basketball and football is very much a team spoil. Yeah, okay,
now you can have an individual star that's in hot.
But Patrick Mahomes without a great left tackle, got crushed
in the Super Bowl, right, So every sport has a
different feel to it. If you go into a game
and you are trying to prove a point instead of

(18:15):
trying to win, you become the Niners last night, because
that's all they cared about in the first three series.
Let's get debo the ball first twelve attempts plays, four
for d.

Speaker 3 (18:24):
This isn't the first time that's happened, Remember Malik Dahbors,
It's happened.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
With the Giants.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
For the Giants.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
It's not good, but that's the reality.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
I mean, listen, then, they have not lost a game
this season with AJ Brown on the field.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
For the record, They're not losing a lot of games
to anybody when everybody's on the field. I mean they lost.

Speaker 3 (18:44):
They got smashed in Tampa without AJ Brown that week
one or t I mean, come on, it's September.

Speaker 1 (18:50):
You're not even.

Speaker 3 (18:54):
I tell your feist seat today.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
So I got a good night sleep here is reading
you forget the sports, all right, Let's move on to
my Jets, who have already been eliminated from the playoffs. Uh,
they got a lot of.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
Blown fourth quarter leads.

Speaker 3 (19:08):
They're losing one score games seven of the last thirteen.
They just they're They're terrible all around. Now this is
where it gets interesting. Earlier this week, Garrett Wilson suggested
the team might have a losing gene, and Aaron Rodgers
seems to agree.

Speaker 7 (19:23):
I'd be some sort of curse.

Speaker 8 (19:25):
We had a snap as well.

Speaker 7 (19:26):
But whatever the case, you know, this team, this organization
is going to figure out how to get over the
hump at some point. You know, the culture is built
by the players. You know, there's a there's a framework
set down by the organization, by the upper ups, by
the staff, and in the end of the players that
make it come to life. And at some point in place,
it's gonna have to figure out what that special sauce

(19:47):
is to to turn those games that should be wins
into wins.

Speaker 1 (19:52):
Well, I know what it is. The elite quarterbacks like Stafford.
In the last two weeks, Matt Stafford has made the
throws to win those That's as great as McVeigh is,
and you know I'm a fanboy of McVeigh. The last
two weeks Stafford has won those games over Josh Allen
and Party because he's made two big throws. Late that
throw over the top when he got Pookaho, that's the

(20:14):
ball game.

Speaker 8 (20:15):
Well.

Speaker 3 (20:15):
Also, brock Perty made a great throw to Debo and
third and ten. Debo dropped it in the red zone.

Speaker 1 (20:20):
I'm just dropped it. I'm not denying that that was
That was a really really ugly drop. That could have
been six debos. I thought it would have been six
if you looked at it.

Speaker 3 (20:28):
Yeah, but asked for Rogers like this is how he's
talking about a curse.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
Bro I'm so over this guy.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
You know who they're calling him, right Toe Rogan, That's
what they're calling Aaron Rodgers. Now what listen, I'm just
I'm just reporting what the Internet says. But people, even
Jets fans, are out on this guy.

Speaker 1 (20:46):
I'm dead serious.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
I'm not making this up.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
I just don't want him on the team. I actually
thought he played in fairness. You know, I've come around
on Baker. I support Baker. I don't like him this weekend,
but I support Baker. I thought Aaron played his best
game of the year against Miami. But once again, Tua
and Miami figured out a way to win and the
Jets couldn't make things.

Speaker 3 (21:07):
Working into by Adams catches the ball should get the
first down, but his momentum took him out. They have
to settle Bok.

Speaker 1 (21:12):
Yeah, but Aaron played well this paste.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
I'll just say one of the reasons that some of
the Jets fanboys potential excitement the left tackle out of
Penn State, oulu filling in.

Speaker 1 (21:22):
He was great, Yes, but an awesome game. Aaron Rodgers had.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
Some time in the pocket.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
So there's now like, oh, we might have a But
I will say this, I've said this. The Jets problem
is not the personnel that kid from Penn State can play.
That is they have their left tackle for the future.
They don't have a lot of needs on this team
they have to have. They need more production at tight
end period. You got to get you gotta have another web.
Receivers are good, they could use I mean, I'll be

(21:48):
honest with you. They don't have a lot of needs.
What they need is a quarterback in their prime. I
know when I said that two months ago, all the
pushback from the fanboys, go look at this roster running back,
check receivers, check check left tackle. Now, check defense at front, edge, rusher, corners, safety,
you got a punk for brakes. I'm just saying we
were on this six weeks ago. The issue isn't everybody

(22:12):
else get a coach and get a quarterback.

Speaker 3 (22:14):
Easier said than done. So I got a Vegas trip
coming up, so I went and looked at all my tickets.
When you go to Vegas, you get futures tickets, and
one that I had to tear up was Jets over.

Speaker 1 (22:24):
Ten and a half wins.

Speaker 3 (22:25):
Oh God, why did I really think that was possible. Come,
you're a fan, they're one of the worst teams in
the league.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
Now you're a fan. But they're not. Now they are
not one of the worst rosters in the league. I'll
argue that all day long. Now that they have a
left tackle, they got comps. It's one game. I watch
the entire game.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
The final story is Detroit Lions.

Speaker 3 (22:50):
They have the best record in the NFL and they
still have not clinched the NFC North. The Vikings are
a game back and the Packers are three games back.
Jared Goff recognizes there's no room for error heading into
the final few weeks of the season.

Speaker 8 (23:03):
We have to keep winning.

Speaker 4 (23:05):
You know, we'd love to say twelve and one, our
divisions wrapped up, but it's not even close. You know,
we have two teams on our heels that are pushing
us pretty hard, and you know, we got to keep winning.
And I'm sure they're just waiting for us to lose.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
You know, j Mac I did a deep dive on this,
and there's a game every week in the NFL, where
my instincts are one side. And then I talked to
my buddy Chad Millman, and I go yesterday afternoon. I
didn't go work out. I just stayed home and I
just kind of went through a bunch of stuff for
Blazing five and all that stuff. There's a lot of

(23:37):
things that line up for Detroit here, like a lot
for Detroit. For Detroit, this is a this is a
team that is getting ready for another one of those
spicy blowouts.

Speaker 3 (23:52):
I think you're talking to some of the wrong peakle okay,
And I know Chad, but whatever, he's seeing you on Detroit.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
I'm just telling you, if you very.

Speaker 3 (23:59):
Careful here with the Lions, Okay, I have a feeling
it gonna be in headline by the way.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
Oh yes, with vigor and confidence vigor. Okay, all right.
Jmack with the news.

Speaker 2 (24:16):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
herd Line News.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
Carson Palmer around the corner. So here's some great news
for Jerry Jones and bad news for Cowboy fans. Forbes
today released the most valuable domestic franchises, and the Cowboys
are worth two billion dollars more than second place Golden
State Warriors. Rams are third. Yankees Nicks. Good news for

(24:44):
Jerry uh Here's the bad news though. A headline this
morning by Stephen Jones, Jerry's son, The Cowboys expect another
really really tight off season. They're out of money. It's
gonna be really really tight. The Cowboys are your friend
who makes a great living but strangely lives check to check.

(25:09):
He's got a range Rover, but he's a renter. What
how does that work? There's no limitations on how great
the Cowboys could be. No state income tax, beautiful facilities,
nice place to live for a great young athlete, center
of the country, mostly decent winter, spring, weather, business friendly state,

(25:34):
huge brand television money rolling in. But they can't budget
themselves correctly. Dallas spent all their money on a rolex
and yet they're renting furniture. So it's And if you
think I'm off my rocker here, I just want you
to think about this for a second. The Philadelphia Eagles
have two wide receivers, two making over twenty five million.

(25:58):
The Philadelphia Eagles have quarterback making over fifty million. The
Philadelphia Eagles have three offensive linemen making over twenty million.
And they could still pay Saquon Barkley a ton. Think
about that, and you guys couldn't get Derrick Henry for
eight million at the trade deadline. And that's just what

(26:20):
the Eagles are paying their offense. Howie Roseman, the Eagles
general manager, is running laps around the Dallas Cowboys since
the Cowboys played in their last just the conference championship,
forget the Super Bowls. Since the Cowboys played in their
last conference championship, Eagles have been in three Super Bowls

(26:40):
and many believe and I may be one of them.
This year will be their fourth. So I've said this
about the Celtics and the Lakers. If you look at
the Celtics and the Lakers and the Eagles and the Cowboys,
it is not close. In the ownership and executive level,
it is not close. I mean, look at Philadelphia what
they're paying their offense. Philadelphia has got young stars, stars

(27:03):
in their prime, aging stars. Dallas has two great players.
So this Mike McCarthy decision that we're going back and
forth on, I got news for you, Howie Roseman, and
the brilliant owner of the Eagles, Jeffrey Lurie, would have
this puppy all figured out, it wouldn't be a week
to week proposition. It's I think sometimes you forget the

(27:29):
gap between the Ravens and the Bengals in the same division,
the gap between the ownership and the executive. So it's
not about Lamar and Joe Burrow. They're both amazing. They're
all timers, both of them. The gap between the commitment
and the foresight and the vision of the Ravens compared

(27:50):
to the Bengals, it's a mile. You think because the Lakers,
and you think because the Cowboys have these big brands,
they have their act together. I'm telling you they got
a range Rover in the dryway driveway and they got
rented furniture. They don't. I mean this idea that they're
going to be tight again. I mean the Denver Broncos

(28:10):
are paying a fortune for Russell Wilson and right now
they're a playoff team. The Rams were paying for Matt
Stafford and Jared Goff and they got to a Super
Bowl and one and they were paying two quarterbacks of fortune.

(28:30):
It's not we always blame the players. Look upstairs to
the guy in the dark glasses. That's and the GM
that's where these games are often decided. Carson Palmer around
the corner, Blazing five today, J Mack, I'm not kiddy.
I had to put it off to the side. I
didn't want it to burn the desk. That's how hot

(28:50):
it is.

Speaker 2 (28:51):
You're coming in hot today. What's going was that a
late night last night?

Speaker 1 (28:53):
I may put shades on to block the sun from
the Blazing five. The thing's on fire over here on
the desk. That's what happens when you have you heard that.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
By the way, be sure to catch live editions of
The Herd weekdays and noone Easter, not a im Pacific.

Speaker 1 (29:10):
Come back Blazing five, top of the hour. And I'm
gonna give my love for Caleb Williams is the Bears
have been a hazmat spill for six months and that
kid keeps stepping to the microphone and saying all the
right stuff. You know, he's gone seven games with no pick.
That's an NFL record for a rookie. I know everybody

(29:30):
wants to bury these kids when they lose games. I'm
just telling you our next guest knows what it's all about.
Where you land is about seventy percent of the game
fifteen years in the NFL. Best quarterback USC's ever had
by some stretch. Carson Palmer now joining US live. First
of all, he's just named head coach at Santa Marguerite High,

(29:52):
which is big time. He coached the freshman last year
with a son who's a quarterback, and now he's going
to take over the program. You know, you were up
there and sun and you're living a great life, and
then all of a sudden, it's like you got the
little coaching bugs almost. I want to congratulate you first
of all, Drew Bletso my friend coaches as well and
loves it. So congrats to you.

Speaker 8 (30:12):
Thanks Falling.

Speaker 9 (30:13):
Yeah, I'm right back in it. This is the mecca
of football in this country, the Trinity League. It's an
incredible opportunity for me. It's where it all started for me.
It's where my football journey began, my faith journey began.

Speaker 8 (30:27):
So it's a really special opportunity to come back home,
back to my alma mater and be a part of
this program.

Speaker 1 (30:33):
Again, good for you. You're too darn young to you
got to be back in the action. You look like
you're thirty two years old. So I've said this before
in the history of football. I can make an argument
that the two quarterbacks who I think are all time talents,
but they didn't get the great landing out of college
or you and Joe Burrow. And as I've watched Burrow,
my heart goes out for him. They gave away Joe

(30:55):
Mixon for a seventh rounder, they won't pay Jamar Chase,
who's just incredible. And this is not to take a
shot at Cincinnati, but you got into a situation there
where you said, guys, enough is enough, and you're a
loyal guy. Do you see when you watch Burrow? Do
you see a little bit of that where you're like, boy,
that kid is you could your heart goes out a
little bit for him.

Speaker 8 (31:17):
Well, it's not what I see, you know, from a
skill standpoint or production on the field, because production on
the field is second to none. I just see a
frustration on his face. And that's what concerns me. You know,
it looks to be building, it looks to be waning
and weighing on him. So that I think the thing
that jumps out of me is is you can see

(31:38):
the frustration on his face. It's tough to put up
the numbers he's put up to score the points they
put up and be in the situation they're in, which
is on the outside looking in. Their playoff shot this year, unfortunately,
looks to be slim to none, and you've got to
start thinking about next year. But I'm starting to see
some frustration grow on Joe's face, and that's concerning Yep.

Speaker 1 (31:56):
We talked about this about a month ago. He was
getting feisty even before games, and you can feel it,
and I I feel bad for him. He looks at
Lamar and he can look at Josh Allen and Stafford
and all these guys have a better supporting cast. So
of all the rookie quarterbacks, I really like Bonnicks and
I think a lot of it's peyton and a lot
of it's fit. His numbers are good, but you could
just see him growing. You look at all these young quarterbacks,

(32:19):
is there one that you've that kind of puff, snaps
or pops out for you?

Speaker 8 (32:25):
Well, I'm biased because he went to USC but Caleb
Williams in Chicago. You know it's been you just talked
about it in a minute ago. It's been a tough year.
There's a lot of chaos in the organization. There's a
lot of questions about the staff, but he hasn't thrown
a pick in seven games. That is That is an
amazing stat Think about that, when you're in that moment
and you're him, and you're fighting for every yard and

(32:48):
trying to get a win, you're trying to get the
ball down the field. I mean, it is really easy
to make a mistake. It is really easy to force
one into coverage. It's really easy to put yourself and
your team in a vulnerable situation. And I think that's
the most impressive thing about him right now, is he
has not done that. He's trying everything he can do.
He's doing stuff he was doing at sc moving around
the pocket. You know, he's not getting a ton of

(33:09):
separation on the outside. So he's creating a separation by
holding on the ball for three, four or five seconds,
making guys miss and giving his receivers downfield a chance
to shake loose. And in all that, he's got guys
flying around and body's coming at him faster than they
ever had before in his life. And he still hasn't
thrown one to the other team. That's a truly amazing stack.

Speaker 1 (33:32):
You know, it's I watched the Niners last night, and
I'm like, listen, you know this. You know this, like
Arizona like windows close pretty fast. This we have a
regulated level of violence. You can have two or three
great players, your left tackle goes down or ages, and
all of a sudden the quarterbacks like, okay, our windows closed.
I look at the forty nine ers and I said
this coming into the season, I said, guys, they're getting old,

(33:54):
they're expensive, and they're getting a little brittle. I kind
of felt like last night is kind of of all
the season that came down to that is just that
now they've got some culture stuff. Did you ever have
a team where you could kind of sense it, Carson like,
oh man, it's closing, it's getting close, it's closing.

Speaker 8 (34:16):
Yeah, Oh absolutely. It happens every three, four or five years.
And sometimes, like in Kansas City, when that window is
being talked about closing, you find a new way to
reinvent yourself and defense in Kansas City, and they're not
explosive and throwing the ball over people's heads, but they
find a way to win games at the end of
the game. So yes, I mean that can absolutely happen.

(34:37):
I think the biggest factor in that window is the
fact that they got a pay rock perty here pretty
pretty soon, and that's gonna be a substantial chunk of
their salary cap. So you're gonna lose a Debo, You're
gonna lose a Kittles, You're gonna lose maybe a Bosa.
Who knows. Once they have to pay him, everything changes.
And I think I talked about it last time I

(34:58):
came on your show. You know, Brock Brock was not
a first round pick. There were some flaws in his game,
in his physical makeup, and I think you put Brock
in an environment where the ball's wet, where the wind
picks up, where the temperature drops, and that ball gets
a little slick, it doesn't quite have that tackiness on it,
you see some issues and some flaws pop up. And
you saw him last night. They're still going to have

(35:19):
to pay him, and they're still going to have to
give him a big chunk of that salary cap, and
that's where you start to see that window close faster.

Speaker 1 (35:26):
Finally, I always thought Bill Belichick's a pro coach, And
though there are similarities now more than ever between college
and pro, it's actually crazy that college players now have
no salary cap and almost no free agent window. It's
the wild wild West. The NFL's got all the borders
and the fences, and I look at Belichick and I think, oh, Bill,

(35:49):
Bill loves structure. There's no structure in college football. I
don't think it can last that long. I think he
could win games. Smart guy. Do you think he could
go to college and just it would drive him nuts
after about a year.

Speaker 8 (36:01):
I think it's gonna be really fun to watch, you know,
the attention to detail and the fact that you have
limits on how many hours you get with your team.
You only get you know, five, six, seven hours with
your team during the season. In the NFL, guys can
come in at five, they can come in at six,
and they can stay till nine, ten, eleven o'clock at night.
So I think that's gonna be a big factor in

(36:21):
his success, is he doesn't have the time to work
with these guys. But like you said, this is the
new NFL. There's no cap, you know, there's no number
of draft picks you get to add to your team.
You can go and take whoever you want from wherever
you want. If the school's pockets are deep enough. And
obviously North Carolina is showing that they've got deep pockets.

(36:42):
They're serious about the football program. It's been a basketball
school for as long as anybody can remember. But they,
you know, they're searching, and Bill is a great place
to start the thing with. Bill is just figuring out
what kind of tolerance, what kind of patience he has
with eighteen, nineteen twenty year olds as opposed to twenty
to thirty five year olds.

Speaker 1 (37:02):
Carson Palmer varsity head coach Santa Margarita High School named
there yesterday, is alma mater. His son is going to
be a sophomore. Right, your son your what? Your son's
name is what? And he's a sophomore quarterback.

Speaker 8 (37:15):
Fletch. Yeah, I've got a sophomore quarterback. And like I said,
I'm right back where it all began in the Trinity
League coaching at Santa Margarita. Really really excited about this
opportunity and being able to have an impact on these
young men's lives.

Speaker 1 (37:28):
Yeah, good for you, that's great giving back and congrats
to your son. I'm going to actually I got to
come down and see a practice. I really want to
watch this stuff. I think it's great.

Speaker 8 (37:36):
Good.

Speaker 1 (37:37):
Thank you so much. Carson, Great sat all right, older
brother of Corsa, Jordan's law who comes on our show.
So that's kind of a legendary southern California high school.
There's a handful of Boscos and Santa Margaritas and modern
day and you've got some Sarah's here in Mission Valley.
I think it's called Missionveller Vejo where Sanchez went. So
there's a lot of these legendary schools and that's cool

(38:01):
blazing five. Let me throw this out to you now, Jmac.
I'm not really a boycott guy. So when people like say, ah,
I'm boycotting, it's like it's an American option. But you
know when people years ago got a little into their
fields with the NFL, I'll never watch again. Oh, ratings

(38:27):
have come out. NFL ratings season to eight eighteen million
people per game, the best in nine and a half years.
People are watching.

Speaker 3 (38:39):
Not funny.

Speaker 8 (38:41):
You know.

Speaker 1 (38:42):
What I think is interesting is that the media kind
of resents power too often. And by the way, I
think it's good for comedians and the media to take
their shots at power. I get that, but you can't
become paralyzed by it. Roger Goodell has never gotten the
respect this guy has navigated COVID streaming CT. I mean,

(39:10):
it's still a sport that can be dangerous. And every
time I turn on a football game, such good kids.
The NFL asked you to play, sometimes a little dinged up,
but they will reward you financially handsomely. And it's harder
to run Netflix than a smaller streaming service. It's harder

(39:32):
to run the NFL than the MLS, And they have
navigated through a lot of storms and they have come out.
As the NBA ratings go through the floor over the
last four years, NFL is up again.

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
