Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume. Okay, let's do a little weekend mail bag.
Have a lot of questions from you guys. You guys
know the drill at John Middlecoff at John Middlecoff is

(00:24):
the Instagram fire in those dms, and get your questions
answered here on the show. When I recorded Thursday night,
I did not because we just go right after the game.
Then obviously we get done, and you know, you load
everything up and you see on your phone you get

(00:46):
a million texts about the Devandre Campbell situation in San Francisco.
And I don't think there's that much more to be
said than what George Kittle and Tarvarius Wards said. I know,
on the most basic level, I hate people that aren't dependable,

(01:11):
and in a situation like that, you know, specific to
that business, and that goes across anything in life. But
you know, in football you only get so many people
to dress, so every spot non starter that has patted
up is a really big deal because obviously you get
a million injuries. And this is not something that came

(01:34):
out of the blue. Drake Greenlaw was coming back the
last couple of weeks, so this is not news that
the guy would have found out on Thursday you know that.
I think sometimes when you're young, you know, your parents,
your grandparents.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Your coaches, whoever teaches.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
You don't quit, never quit, which I think for the
most part is true. And then you get into the
business world realize, yeah, it happens all the time. People
break leases, you know, people quit on jobs, people quit
when they think they're getting screwed. Like you know, It's
just every situation is a little different. But I do

(02:14):
think there's something to be said. You know, when you're
in certain environments and other people are depending on you,
like you do owe a lot to those other people.
And in something this specific, like those other guys on
the team, especially the forty nine ers Tarvarius Ward to
call you out, he's playing less than probably a month

(02:37):
after his daughter died. Drake Greenlaw was literally coming back
from a torn achilles. So all these guys are going through,
whether it's injuries, whether it's personal situations, and giving it
all they have and for you to walk out when
they need you because you're injured. If you had a

(02:59):
huge issue with this, which listen, we could debate all
we want. I have no problem on like Thursday morning
or Wednesday, when you realize, like this guy's gonna start
and I'm gonna go back to the bench like we're
gonna kind of like I'm out, I don't want to play. Okay,
that's fine, we'll cut you, we'll move on, we won't
dress you, and you won't impact the game. But where
where I hear a lot of former players and they're right, like,

(03:20):
the selfish part is is simply that when you dress
and you take up one of those spots and you
get into a position where they got injuries and they're
playing people that they don't want to play because you
are just in a locker room.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
It's it's.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
I don't know, I can't even I can't even begin
to relate to that mindset of And listen, we all
get pissed off. We all, I think sometimes you know,
our ego or whatever can get the best of us.
Then there are situations like that. There there is no
excuse for that. There really isn't. And you know, I
think the players, it's not often that you see players.

(03:59):
I think a couple of things. One speak on someone's
business right when holdouts and contracts are going on, because
at the end of the day, it is a business
and you have to be numb to it, Like, I
got no problem with players holding out or holding in,
but once you sign the contract, you better be ready
to fucking hit the ground running and produce. And Brandon

(04:20):
and Iyuk's a good example. He held in and then
he showed up and he just was not ready. He
simply was not ready. And that to me is unacceptable, right,
I mean, if you're gonna hold out, you better be
I mean going ninety nine miles an hour the moment
that ink is dry on that piece of paper for
the contract, because I get holding out when we're talking
millions of dollars. I think it's easy for everyone sitting

(04:42):
on their couch. There's a cutthroat business. But if you
are gonna make a stink, which a lot of people
do in a lot of different industries, once you get
what you're looking for and you get over, it's time
no one gives a shit about that anymore. It's time
catch passes make place. And and I think you rarely
ever hear teammates blast a player like that, you know,

(05:06):
essentially saying like he can't be here. That that's I mean,
obviously Charvari is called it horseshit. And you know, Kittle said,
I never want to be around a human being like
that again, because he kind of left him all on
an island. Now, he's not the reason they lost the game,
but it sure didn't probably help, especially once the Rams

(05:26):
started running down their throat and they got Flante get
fouls out there. You know, probably should be like a
fifth stringer, and it's DeAndre Campbell, I mean, has been.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Pretty terrible for the forty nine ers. That's the other thing,
you know, it's it.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
I guess as a player, I would understand if it's
pretty equal, and it's pretty clear right to the coaches,
to the fans, to the front office, like you know,
this is a coin flip. You're playing this guy because
you like him more or whatever, but he's not better
than me. I mean, that happens a lot. And then
there's a situation like Drake Greenlaw with a torn achilles

(06:03):
is a better player than Campbell, let alone. Drake Greenlaw
coming back from injury last night before then he got
hurt again, obviously tweeked the knee or something. He is
one of the better linebackers in the NFL and was
a dominant impact player early in that game. It's like Campbell,
you have nothing in common with this guy. Who is

(06:25):
I mean, one, if you don't know Greenlaw's story, google it,
because pretty freaking incredible what the guy overcame in his
life to get where he's at. And two, like his
ability is one hundred XU. So what are we talking
about here?

Speaker 2 (06:42):
I just.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
That's one a lot of things, you know I put
on the Niners. So obviously there's stuff out of your control.
Some of these some of the deaths they're dealing with,
people getting shot. But the contract situation with Auk, like
that's on them. You know, the depth on this team
being limited because of Trey Lance trade, Like, ultimately that's

(07:07):
on them. This is I'm not putting this on anybody,
but but Campbell, this is a rogue player embarrassing himself.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
And listen.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
I saw Florio wrote that Legarrett.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Blunt I don't remember this.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
I guess walked out in the middle of a game
when he was on the Steelers. I think my favorite
Blunt story is when him and Leveon Bell were driving
to the plane for a preseason game. I think Leveon
was driving and Blunt was in the pastears seat, might
have been vice versa, and they got pulled over and
they were both getting high as a kite, and one

(07:42):
of them got a duy and the other one got
picked up and went to the plane, and then he
quit on the Steelers was cut the next day and
then later obviously started for the Patriots. Difference as lagera
blunt at the time could still kind of play this guy.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
It's like.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
He's done out of the league. So rough moment for
the Niners. It's good to Vince. I've been listening to
you every day for the past year. Planet continue. I
like this guy, Vince. I'm not a Vikings fan, but
I am intrigued in the Sam Donald JJ debate. I
have yet to see anyone say why the Vikings can't

(08:20):
do with green Bay at Jordan love and sit JJ
for three years while also giving Donald an extension, giving
he is coming off multiple surgeries and having a year
to recover and another year to develop can be beneficial.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
I think the hard part why no.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
One's arguing that is you almost pick a lane because
part of JJ's value in this modern day NFL is
his contract. So JJ McCarthy's contract, I'm gonna look it
up right now.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
I would guess this.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Three four million dollars a year and as Vikings fans
have hit me up and he's signed a four year,
twenty million dollar contract. So and the way they amortize
it over the course of a deal, it's just it's so,
here's his cap hits the next four years three point nine,
four point nine, five point nine, six point nine. That's

(09:17):
just that's good business. If he's if he's a solid,
if he's a top twelve fifteen quarterback, because you can
build that thing up and part of Sam Darnold is
neutralizing his value. Now you can try to play it
like Terry and Fontina with the Falcons, like we want
deep quarterback room. Yeah, I mean everyone does. But eventually

(09:40):
got to put all your cards in the middle of
the table like the Bills, the Chiefs, the Ravens like
you kind of is what it is. Once you pay
a guy, right and once you have one of these
guys like Michael Penning's gonna be the starting quarterback next
year for the Falcons. Kirk Cousins is done after this year,
clearly with the way he's playing lately. But like that

(10:00):
was always going to be an off season discussion. Now
there is no discussion. It's completely over, but Bo Nicks, Caleb,
Jane Daniels.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Probably missing someone.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
Jane Daniels Oh Drake may like one of their huge
values besides like their ability, is their contract. So I
just think that's where it gets really complicated. I mean,
to me, if I'm signing Darnold, I'm like.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
Could I trade JJ McCarthy for a first round pick.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
What's the name of the consignment store for the designer bags.
It's called my Sister's Attic. A lot of people have
asked me about that. I gave her the I got
three bags for This is why I did.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
It, and this is why I went to the consignment
store because.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
One of them she didn't like, so that one will
get a given to my mom for Christmas. But you
know you gotta give you it's like diversifying your portfolio.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Tell you this, my sister addic. If you want designer bags.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
Honestly they got I mean, the one designer bag that
you all that most people, even if you're not in
that world, which I definitely am not, I don't give
a shit about that type stuff is the LV Louis
Vuton bag and they have a ton of them, and
you can find ones that are in really good shape.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
It's like eight hundred bucks.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
Well, I mean they're brand new, are like four or five,
which is crazy to me.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Pa for a bag, but I get it.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
Chicks like that Vikings fan, I guess we pay for
watches and you know my my golf bag is worth.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
A lot of money. So I mean we all got issues.

Speaker 1 (11:46):
Why are talking heads constantly talking about Sam Darnold's signing
a huge deal with another team. Sure, it's a fun conversation,
but what coach GM, ownership group worth their salt would
let him go? Seriously, he's getting tagged if we can't
reach a deal.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
Right.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
JJ is already a full year behind learning anything and
a rookie deal. Vikings don't have to do anything with anyone.
Even Jones probably isn't going anywhere. We have cap room,
a great situation, coach GM and talent. Nobody would let
them leave if you don't have to. Am I missing something? Well?
I think part of the reason they talk to Daniel

(12:23):
Jones about coming in is I do think they plan
on pivoting to JJ McCarthy. That was always the plan here. Now,
Like you said, anyone worth their salt plans fucking change, right,
it's like, Hey, this is the best business partner I
could ever have. Then you find out he's, you know,
scamming you and scamming seven of your clients. Probably now

(12:46):
do business with him anymore. Right, It's like, Hey, you
get married, you're in love, you have a couple of kids.
All of a sudden you find out she's sleeping with
the pool boy. Probably divorce, right, So as new information comes,
we make the decisions.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
And it's pretty.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Clear, like I is JJ McCarthy just going to be
the next couple of years throw for thirty eight touchdowns?
Like they have four more games left now, this is
a big game coming up.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Or I guess who the Vikings play this week?

Speaker 1 (13:17):
Oh, I know why I'm playing on that because they're
playing the Bears.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
Who cares they.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
Get the Oh that's why it's throwing me off at
six o'clock. They got the Bears' on a night football,
So they got the Bears. I'm on a night football,
which at home. I like the Vikings in that game.
Then they play a really big game in Seattle. And
if he goes in there and plays well against Mike
McDonald on the road, I think these last three weeks

(13:42):
after the Bears game, which I would expect them to
win by a couple of touchdowns, and then the playoffs
like if they are leaning like we got to keep them,
which like you said, they should be if he plays
pretty well and against Seahawks, the Packers, the Lions, and
it's at Seattle at Detroit, and then to ending on
how it shakes like he might have a road playoff game.

(14:03):
Now if his road playoff game is in the first
round against Atlanta, it's probably must win, like I don't
think he could lose that game, and then you tag
like that's how That's how fast things change here. So
that's why I love when people are like middle go
if you're changing your tune. I had one dude DM

(14:26):
me like, I used to like you a lot, but
now you just hot take artist. I'm like, if you
listen to me and think I'm a hot take artist,
I don't know what to tell you. But like every
week things change. It's not like I go, I re
ranked the top five quarterbacks. It's not like I re
ranked the top coaches. Like we got a pretty good idea,

(14:46):
but eventually, once you win nine straight games, I can't
just keep saying Sirianni's the village idiot and gonna get fired.
It's why Actually I was thinking this today that I
wonder if part of Belichick. I'm sure I'll talk to
Coward about this on Sunday about Bill that one million

(15:07):
dollar buyout is he looks around the landscape. He's not
taking most of these crappy jobs. The Eagle job is
one he would be very interested in because of the
support he gets from Jeffrey Lurry. Jeffrey Lurry sneaky hates
the Patriots because the Boston guy competes against the Crafts,
not like hates him personally, but like it would be
a way to get back at him simpler market. He

(15:28):
respects Howie, they got a bunch of talent on the
team and they will pay any dollar to compete. And
I wonder if he realizes, well, it's gonna be really,
really difficult, like Sirianni, no matter what. At this point,
I guess it could totally come off the rails if
like aj Brown like attacked Jalen Hurts or something. Though
they claim it's good, but like, regardless of what happens

(15:52):
in the playoffs, I wonder if they give this one
more year with these new coordinators and the roster that
they have, so I would guess they got two years
and then Bill could make his decision next year if
that's something he would entertain. So I wonder if that
one year buyout is more toward that.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
Just a little theory I.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
Had driving around as a lifelong Broncos fan in Utah Alum,
I was thrilled when Denver took Bo Nicks. I watched
him absolutely shred the UT's defense, which was likely the
top union in the Pac twelve. While I was there
on the flip side, I watched Caleb Williams fold every

(16:31):
time we played the Trojans. Very true, Utah sneaky owned USC.
Kyle Whittingham owned the Trojans.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
Why is that?

Speaker 1 (16:42):
Well, this year was a disaster, but Utah is one
of the tougher programs in the country, and he showed
a lot of lack of confidence plays that were seeing
in Chicago. I never understood why it was just widely
accepted that Caleb was the number one pick before he
even finished his college career, and that Knicks shouldn't even

(17:03):
be taken.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
The first round.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
I absolutely love that he and Sean Payton have made
so many analysts look like clowns. But why did so
many people place the Broncos at the bottom of the
league post draft slash preseason, even with the Super Bowl
winning offensive head coach, a good offensive, great offensive line.
I saw they just extended your guy Bowles, great offensive line,

(17:28):
and although not the most physically gifted, clearly uber coachable,
competitive and experienced rookie. I think sometimes perception in narratives
around something can drive the view of you know, I
think Sean Payton, I've never met the guy, but he

(17:52):
does rub a lot of people in the league the
wrong way. And that, when I say in the league
also mean former players just don't think he's universally like
well talked about. It's like, when do you ever hear
someone that like played for Tomlin or McVeigh or or
Andy that ever has even close to a bad word

(18:12):
to say about him? Get Sean Payton, I mean, you
will get some takes. So I think it's easier root
against him. Even though I think most people that talk
about football think Russell Wilson's kind of a weirdo. I
think a lot of people were uncomfortable with that, which
is weird.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
I mean, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (18:32):
I definitely wasn't. It's like, yeah, he hates him. He's
not playing very good regardless of the stats.

Speaker 2 (18:35):
He can't run his offense.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
But that was about as cold blooded as a move
as we've seen in the NFL in recent memory. We've
actually seen a couple, right, We've seen Josh McDaniels do
it to Carr. We've seen Sean Payton do it to Russell.
We saw the Giants do it to Daniel. It's actually
happened to a lot of quarterbacks because of you know,

(18:59):
they're guaranteed money if they get injured.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
Is just so big.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
Remember Russell's was I forget the number off thought in
my head, but was it thirty forty million dollars if
you were to break a leg or something. Derek Carr
I think was like twenty five. Daniel Jones was twenty
four or twenty three. It's like, weird, this guy's not
gonna be our quarterback next year.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
We ain't risking it.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
So I think part of it's that, and I your
guest is as good as mine with the bow Nicks hate,
I think sometimes also you know their narrative and a
like a momentum of hype is like an avalanche coming

(19:38):
down the hill and there's no stopping it. We saw
it with Trevor Lawrence years ago, and listen, I knew
buddies that were like, I think Trevor Lawrence.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
I've scouted him, He's one of the best prospects I've
ever scouted.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
It's like, yeah, you watch him at Clemson, It's like, yeah,
he's a good player. I mean, he's a first round quarterback,
top ten fifteen quarterback. But why is this guy that
just the greatest prospect of all time? You watch him play,
You're like, yeah, it's just sums off, like there was
no arguing anyone with a fucking brain. Who watched Andrew
Luck You're like, wait, he's six ' five, he's like
two hundred and forty pounds. He can run like Cam Newton.

(20:12):
He is accurate, he's tough, he's smart, like this guy,
this guy was made in the lab. But then he
watched Trevor. You're like, well, I know he's tall. I
know he weighs a lot, but he doesn't look that big.
I know he's fast, but he's not like super dynamic
as a runner. I know he has a good arm,
but I wouldn't exactly call it like Josh Allen or
Herbert and he just I think looking back, it's one

(20:33):
of the But if you would have said to anyone,
and I mean anyone that Trevor Lawrence was the number
one overall pick, they would have.

Speaker 2 (20:41):
Looked at you crazy.

Speaker 1 (20:43):
I'll never forget I uh and listen, you don't have
to believe me if you don't want. You know, my
first couple of years, when you're in the office, people
aren't looking for your takes, like hey, coach Howie, we
need to draft these three guys like you do some reports, right,
You're just you're part of the squad, but like you

(21:04):
ain't in the final meetings of like yeah, these overrated.
This guy sucks when you're talking about high price free
agents and you're talking about the draft picks in the
first round. But I remember one night at the office
watching Trent Richardson, and I remember thinking it kind of
looks slow to me.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
I remember just.

Speaker 1 (21:23):
Watching him going and at the time, you know, when
you're in the office, you're doing a.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
Lot of pro film.

Speaker 1 (21:28):
So I'm watching all these guys in the NFL way
more than I am college guys, and a lot of
practice squad guys, so you know what works in the
NFL very well. It's the problem with a lot of
college scouts is they lose touch with what working in
the NFL. It's all based on like judging them based
on college. Like the best scouts watch them both.

Speaker 2 (21:48):
So you have an understanding.

Speaker 1 (21:49):
But I remember watching Trent Richardson and I was like,
something's just a little off, just in terms of like
he's being talked about like he's Barry Sanders or Walter Payton.
I'm not acting like he shouldn't get drafted, but I
just remember, like, this guy's gonna go top five.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
It's like us, are we sure?

Speaker 1 (22:07):
And I remember saying something in a meeting around a
group of people and everyone just looked at me kind
of crazy. And at the time you don't have the
confidence to, you know, you bullshit argue, but it's just
like one of those things you let go. I remember
four or five years later it's like, yeah, man, it's
just some things like you watch Saquon Barkley in college.

Speaker 2 (22:29):
It was like, listen, this dude's a badass.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
Like this, there is no chance even if you put
this guy in the shitty team, which he was on
it's still gonna be pretty.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
Clear that he's really talented. I remember watching Trent going
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (22:45):
Now. I mean some people would have said that about
Derrick Henry, that is this really gonna translate to the NFL,
And for a.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
While it didn't, and then it kind of did.

Speaker 1 (22:53):
A lot of people sending me reels about Belichick. There
are some funny reels about it and going back to college.
I mean, it's it's a funny story separate from the
football story, which is fascinating, but just there is a
lot of comedic relief around Bill and his crew going

(23:14):
to North Carolina. I've never been, but by all accounts,
it's one of the most beautiful campuses in America. And Bill,
i think said in on this press conference, He's like, yeah,
I've been to every major campus in this country, and
this has to be on the short list.

Speaker 2 (23:28):
It's probably not wrong.

Speaker 1 (23:29):
I wonder, you know, tough academic requirements, what the talent
is like there. You know, Bill likes some young right,
I mean, part of the reason some schools just have
more babes, just wider range of people that can get
into school like it, it's a little easier to get
into San Diego State or Arizona State than it is Cal.

Speaker 2 (23:52):
It's why Cal.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
You know, if you're a five at Cow, you or
if you're a tenant col you're probably like a three
at San Diego State.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
It non athlete.

Speaker 1 (24:09):

Speaker 1 (25:54):
Question for the mailbag, with Belchick going to North Carolina,
do you think any other high profile NFL coach will
make the jump to college if someone like Vrabel doesn't
believe in Caleb Trevor dak Or Drake. Why wouldn't he
take an NFL job? If Ohio State offered Vrabel fourteen

(26:15):
million for seven years, do you think he would turn
down one hundred million dollars?

Speaker 2 (26:22):
Well, Vrabel played in the NFL for what, my guess
would be.

Speaker 1 (26:30):
Looking it up right now, twelve years, so he wasn't
exactly you know, ray Lewis or something. But from nineteen
ninety seven to twenty ten he made a lot of
money playing. I'm trying to look up see if there's
any contract information.

Speaker 2 (26:48):
He made millions, not like crazy millions, but he made enough.

Speaker 1 (26:52):
I looked up he was making nine point five million
dollars to coach the Titans. I'm pretty sure he's being
paid nine point five million dollars this year to not
coach the Titans. So verbele in terms of money, in
terms of happiness, Like, he's making a.

Speaker 2 (27:09):
Lot of money.

Speaker 1 (27:09):
Now, if you're making a million dollars and you've been
making a million dollars for a while, I'm just using
that as it's an easier number, because I think it's
more realistic for ninety nine percent of people than like
ten or fifteen million dollars, not that one million dollars
a year in a salary. Is that realistic for most people?
But you know what I mean, we could also use
like five hundred thousand dollars. It's like that's good, good

(27:32):
income and you're making money, you've invested like your your
family's living good. Might have a country club membership, your
kids could go to.

Speaker 2 (27:38):
Private school if you want.

Speaker 1 (27:39):
You got a couple of new cars, you got a
big pad. Again, this is if you don't live in
a in a tax heavy state like California, Jersey or
New York. If you if you live in Texas, Arizona
or Florida, fuck, you're living good. And I highly recommend
that because it's amazing when you cross an imaginary line
how much more money stays with you. And then you
can always go back to the those states if you

(28:00):
really want to and buy what you want to buy
with the extra money that you just keep every year.
That's just little life lesson from a guy that lived
in one place for thirty plus years and drove across
an imaginary line. His life's infinitely better. But one hundred
million dollars makes you listen. But if you don't want
to coach college and you're already rich, like who cares?

(28:24):
So if he is dead set on coaching the NFL,
which I do feel like he is, then I would
expect him to try to get an NFL job. Now,
if Ryan Day loses this job to Tennessee and his
shit canned next week, I think they would only do
it if they knew they could land Mike Vrabel, who

(28:45):
obviously is an alumni. But at his age, you know
what he want to go full saban is his desire.
I think what makes it unique for him is he
won so many Super Bowls as a player, right, so
only he would know this his true true desire. Like

(29:09):
how much it means to him to win a Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (29:10):
As a coach?

Speaker 1 (29:15):
I don't know the answer to that, Like, because if
it's like Ohio State would offer you one hundred million
dollars and give you all those resources, like, bro, you're
probably gonna win a NAT of here, shit, you might
win a couple And if you're getting paid, like you said,
fourteen million dollars a year, he's no Ohio guy, definitely
would make him listen. I just have no clue where

(29:35):
his head's at in terms of how dead set is
he on trying to like win a Super Bowl. Do
you think guys would rather win a national championship and
have a similar role, or be like Ashton Genty and
have a slim to none chance of winning the national
championship but be immortalized in a smaller program's history. I'm

(29:58):
a Utah fan, and I forever hold the guys that
help us win two BCS Bowl games in higher regard
than any other player from Utah's history.

Speaker 2 (30:09):
Just curious.

Speaker 1 (30:14):
Now when he decides to stay, he understands that, like,
this year couldn't have gone any better, and they have
no shot to win the national Championship. I guess technically
they do because they're in the playoffs, but we all
know they have no shot. And I think more of
it is once you're in it, Like if you're at

(30:36):
Utah and you're at Boise and you like love your
teammates and you love the program, Like what are you
really chasing? Especially they're paying you and you know you're
gonna go to the NFL, especially if you think your
team's gonna be really good, Like you have those relationships,
like he's played with these guys now for three years.
I don't understand how these people just jump and team

(30:57):
to team, develop any human relationships with their teammates. I mean,
it's one thing to be a mercenary when you're like
thirty three year old NFL guy and holding on and
is trying to get a job like Kalayis Campbell just
do whatever he can to play for somebody.

Speaker 2 (31:12):
Get it.

Speaker 1 (31:13):
He's you know, been the league for a long time.
But when you're seventeen eighteen, you like, get to campus,
you meet a bunch of buddies, and you like it.

Speaker 2 (31:20):
And you're making money. I just like you. It'd be
hard for me, but I guess I'm not quite wired
like some of these other guys.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
Huge Lions fan and a Michigan man, so I've been
in football heaven the last couple of years. I live
in Minnesota, and I am not a Vikings fan, but
I was excited when they drafted JJ with O'Connell as
his coach. I thought he could have a lot of
success if Darnold continues at his current pace and has
success in the playoffs. You think it's possible the Vikings

(31:54):
would trade McCarthy if so. With the weak quarterback draft
class coming up, could they get a first round pick
for him?

Speaker 2 (32:02):
Does that make any sense?

Speaker 1 (32:03):
I love JJ, but if you already have a great
quarterback and can continue to build the roster, I would
imagine they'd get a first round pick for him. Maybe
it'd be a little complicated because of the injury, So
it would be I would say, predicated on a physical

(32:24):
like his knee would have to be right. But they
gave him a twelve million dollars signing bonus, and if
they could get a first round pick, here's the problem,
Like the Raiders the Giants, these teams aren't giving them
a top five pick.

Speaker 2 (32:38):
Or maybe they would. Maybe they would.

Speaker 1 (32:42):
Actually I don't see how they could because the Giants
passed on them. So the Giants, if they thought he
was a franchise quarterback, could have drafted him.

Speaker 2 (32:52):
It'd just be the Raiders.

Speaker 1 (32:53):
And if they have the number one pick, I think
it could be harder to get a first round pick
for him than you think.

Speaker 2 (32:58):
So I guess now just talk can get out loud.

Speaker 1 (33:00):
I would say no because it would have to be
a team that's desperate for a quarterback. Who would that
be at the bottom, you know, the Giants, the Raiders,
the Titans, the Jets. Would you do their second round
pick for some of these teams, which was like pick
thirty five and just kind of eat it. So basically,

(33:23):
you would eat twenty plus spots in a.

Speaker 2 (33:25):
Draft in twelve million bucks.

Speaker 1 (33:28):
And it would impact your cap a little bit, but
not crazy.

Speaker 2 (33:32):
Uh Steeler fan here.

Speaker 1 (33:33):
I know there is a lot to be said about
how authentic Russell Wilson is, but I wanted to share
something that most NFL fans don't know. Russell Wilson visits
the kids here at Children's Hospital almost every week. My
nephew is battling cancer, and it means so much to
the kids. It shows a lot about his character. Lastly,
google Big Ben versus Aaron Rodgers stats. The numbers are surprising.

(33:54):
Let me push back on one thing. I do think
if you fall football, you know on Instagram or Twitter,
you know Russell like he posts that, right, So I
mean he's been doing that for a decade. So I'm
not there's a difference between talking authentically and just doing
good things, Like I don't think anyone's ever argued like

(34:14):
I see some of these politicians. I'm like, not only
are they not authentic, I think they're a fucking scumbag.
I wouldn't trust that person to walk my dog across
the street. Then there's versions like Russell Wilson that goes like,
I don't believe he's like a bad person. I don't
believe he does bad things. I don't believe he's not
like a has some good intentions. I just think he's

(34:38):
just been this creation of this media training or whatever,
and maybe that's part of him. I don't know, but
I don't think anyone's ever.

Speaker 2 (34:47):
Thought he's like a bad guy.

Speaker 1 (34:50):
And obviously, like you said, he does things for other
people and he's done that from the beginning of his career.

Speaker 2 (34:55):
I actually think it goes.

Speaker 1 (34:56):
Back to like Wisconsin and North Carolina state. I think
we got to put Russell into context, right when when
you look at some of these people that are you know,
it can be quote unquote phony. I think you can
separate them like you can be kind of phony, try
to get someone's business right and be a high character,
high morals. You can be phony and you'd put a

(35:19):
knife in their throat to get to ruin their career, right.
I think that's the way a lot of people look
at like politicians. And then I think there's like Russell
Wilson does not fall into the latter category.

Speaker 2 (35:34):
I think people just think he's.

Speaker 1 (35:35):
Kind of cheesy and annoying, but no one would say
he's like a bad human being. I also think and
I think the pushback on some time, like you said,
it does mean a lot to the kids. A lot
of NFL guys do that and you never know it
because they don't publicize it. Like a lot of guys
do things in their community in pro sports in general.

(35:56):
I remember DeMarcus Cousins, the basketball player from Kentucky, when
he was in Sacramento, used to like take care of
the Grant.

Speaker 2 (36:02):
High school football program.

Speaker 1 (36:04):
It's like an inner city program in Sacramento that historically,
like when I was a kid and played him in
high school, were good. I mean they were loaded. I
think they've kind of had some ups and downs, but
like they've had some moments with some like NFL guys
in their program. And he never publicized it. And I
think a lot of people, you know, go to hospitals
give money to other people and it's just completely silent

(36:26):
because it's just they're a good guy. Is the right
thing to do, and they can make a difference. And again,
like I got We're in a world of posting things,
so it doesn't bother me that much. But I think
there's an element of.

Speaker 2 (36:39):
That there with people I don't care.

Speaker 1 (36:44):
Do you think Lawrence Taylor, probably Bill's favorite player of
all time and former tower heel, could be part of
Bill's staff? Maybe not a defensive coordinator, but more like
a Warren Sap. I I doubt that one. I thought
I saw relatively recently. I thought he got in trouble

(37:04):
again this summer, Lawrence Taylor arrested and charged with failing
to report move as a sex offender.

Speaker 2 (37:13):
Again. I just think he's been in too much.

Speaker 1 (37:15):
Trouble, so I would say no. Now do I think
Bill will bring him to the team and have him
maybe talking a practice or something, for sure? But I
don't think Bill won. I don't even think he would,
But I don't think he can. Fellow baldy here, how
often do you shave your head? Have you ever thought

(37:38):
of a hair transplant?

Speaker 2 (37:41):
I heard the other.

Speaker 1 (37:42):
Day from a buddy about a guy that I never
crossed my mind that went to Turkey and got it.
And I think a lot of people you know over
the years have gone to Turkey. And I was like,
how much, because I always heard it was like thirty
forty fifty grand, which in America it was always I remember,
I know a good buddy that I went to college
with who got it, and at the time, this is

(38:04):
probably a decade ago, you know, in his twenties, it
was like twenty five grand, which might have been millions
of dollars at the time. And it didn't even totally work.
And I don't think any of these totally work, like
you have to go back and get it redone. But
I just thought, like, I don't even care. And then,
you know, my dating life once I went bald, actually
kind of elevated, and I just don't care. Though I've

(38:27):
said it always that I would have no problem coming back,
but I wouldn't want the hair that I used to
have or had. I wouldn't want my previous hair, which
I'm pretty sure is what they do, because they just
take it out of your sides and put it on top.
If you're giving me John Stamo's flow. You know, Brady
clearly had good hair. He was losing it and then

(38:50):
he got the plugs or whatever he got, and that's
just his hair. You know, you look at like Peyton
Manning or something like he just got bad hair. I
didn't have great hair, wasn't bad, but it wasn't like
I wouldn't hang my hat on it. And so if
like I just get to come back with my old hair,
I don't really care I shave. It just depends. Like today,

(39:12):
I shaved after the steam room and the sawn after
I worked out because we're going you know, it's Marie
and her mom's birthday tonight. But if we weren't doing
anything and I might not a shit.

Speaker 2 (39:24):
You know, it depends. I wear a hat a lot.

Speaker 1 (39:25):
Now podcasting My Friends with Travis Matthews, I've been doing
pretty good giveaways. I did a giveaway someone want one
of the one of you guys won.

Speaker 2 (39:34):
Matt on a.

Speaker 1 (39:37):
What was that Monday Night Football? We predicted the score
Thursday and I put this all on Instagram. Thursday Night Football,
we did combine passing yards. He just got three. He
got two pullovers and a pair of jeans. On Thursday
Night Football, I gave away one hundred and fifty dollars
gift card to Travis Matthews and it was combined passing
yards of Stafford and Purty. Most people were five point

(40:00):
fifty to six fifty and then the Torrential rain Port.
They combined for three h two, so the closest was
actually someone that gets three hundred and twenty five. I
kind of like doing something like that. I might, and
I'm gonna do another one. I got one more one
hundred and fifty dollars gift card which gets you a
cup of polos, gets you some shorts, gets your pullover
like Dravis Matthews got sweet shit. So I will do

(40:21):
another one of those on Monday Night Football. Huge fan
of the Pod question that after Week fourteen, I feel

(40:42):
like needs to be addressed as much as the NFL
media thinks, the Chiefs have essentially locked up the number
one seed with the Bills losing. Would you be surprised
if they find themselves potentially falling to the three seed.
Bills can easily sweep their next four games. Christmas Day
Chiefs in Pittsburgh has upset written all over it, and

(41:04):
all of a sudden if the Steelers win out also feasible.
The Chiefs are fighting for their lives against a gritty
Broncos team in Denver with a win for the one
and a loss that drops them to the three that
still seems like gotta have it, gotta get it type
Chiefs game. That's a good point, I would say, I

(41:24):
think that Bills, I don't know, man. I just think
the Chiefs find a way to win. So pulling up
the Chiefs schedule right now. They got the Browns this
week in Cleveland, which will not be an easy game.
The Texans, who have kind of been in shambles all
year at Arrowhead and then at Pittsburgh, Christmas at Broncos.

(41:47):
I think where you might have an issue if you're
the Chiefs, like, are you running on fumes a little bit?
You're playing in all these close games. If they were
to get like upset by the Browns, then I would
think it would be on the table because then you
get a short week Saturday game Texans. Then you got
the fucking Christmas Wednesday game, which I get and is

(42:08):
going to do huge numbers.

Speaker 2 (42:10):
That sucks. If you're the Chiefs, you're like.

Speaker 1 (42:13):
Wait, we gotta go Saturday game, so we get we
don't get an extra normal work week, and then we
play a game on Wednesday. But part of the reason
Andy's get making twenty and Mahomes making fifty is like
where do you think the Bills are paid television?

Speaker 2 (42:29):
Baby?

Speaker 1 (42:30):
But yeah, it's not inconceivable. Before I get into the
other team schedules, I think it's much more about like,
if the Chiefs screw up in one of these two games,
it could unravel just because they could be exhausted and
Denver played them. Well, my take would be, though, fo
get you're telling me they go twelve and one, so

(42:52):
in thirteen games, they lose one game and then down
the stretch. I don't see it being worse than two.
So that would be two two and two, which would
make them fourteen and three. So the Bills, like you said,
would have to win out, which is possible.

Speaker 2 (43:09):
And let me click on the Steelers who they got.
I think their schedule is kind of hard.

Speaker 1 (43:14):
So the Steelers got obviously the Eagles this week, then
the Ravens, then the Chiefs and the Bengals. I have
a hard time seeing them win out. I really do, Like,
I don't think that's happening the Bills. It's all about
this game because then they go Patriots, Jets, Patriots. So yeah,

(43:35):
I mean, I don't think you're crazy. But the Chiefs
can go two and two and those other teams would
have to go four to oh. It's a big game
for the Bills on Sunday for sure, really big game
coming off thirteen and oh twenty twenty three season and
being snubbed from the College Football playoffs and subsequently following
that season with an abysmal two to ten twenty twenty

(43:58):
four campaign. Can Mike Norvel right the ship at Florida
State going forward? Will hiring Gus Melzon and Tony White
at both coordinator spots chaint.

Speaker 2 (44:08):
Be the change that's needed.

Speaker 1 (44:11):
What I don't understand, you know, from a firing coaches,
it's like, you just went thirteen to oh with these guys, right,
so then you bring them back, it's clear you suck
because your quarterback was so abysmal, I mean so bad.
But there's gonna be a lot of pressure on them

(44:34):
because you go thirteen to oh even though you got
screwed to the playoffs or whatever. I don't think technically
you did, but I understand people complaining about it. You
can go like seven and five and everyone's like, Okay.

Speaker 2 (44:45):
You get a little breather. Two and ten.

Speaker 1 (44:48):
You're just not There are schools you are not ever
allowed to go to and ten and the moment you
do it, even if you have some equity built up,
because Norvell did with the previous season, you were immediately
on the hot seat. And that's basically any top I
would say twelve ish program. I mean, look at Oseron.
You could win the national championship. If you go to

(45:09):
and ten. The next year you're on the hot seat. Alabama, Georgia, Florida,
Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, sc Oregon would be the same.
Like you just would not be allowed to go to
inten and you shouldn't be because you could have a
weird season, balls can bounce the wrong way and you

(45:29):
can go seven to five, eight and four at one
of the great programs, right you know, you watch LSU
this year. It was a bizarre year. But if that's
as shitty as it gets, it's like he can fight
off everybody. And I don't think it's random that him
and his wife donated. When I say him and his wife,
I mean he's the guy making the millions. Brian Kelly

(45:51):
donates a million dollars to the nil fund, You know,
it just quiets everyone down. It's like, yeah, Brian, even
you probably got eighty million in the bank, and if
you got eighty in the bank, you're investing it. You're
turning that fucking thing into one fifty, so you give
it a million. Which I'm not one of those people
who like to degrade others for what's like he's doing

(46:13):
it for tax breaks.

Speaker 2 (46:15):
It's like, listen, but like you.

Speaker 1 (46:19):
Are doing it to help your program, but no one's
looking at you the same when you're eight and four
and you've lost some of the games you did. Now,
is he on the hot seat next year? You know,
he's got a couple of years, but like that's where
eight and four start. Two to ten Florida State. Pretty sure,
Bobby Bowden was in the top five for like fifteenth
straight years. I feel like I'm screwing up that stat

(46:41):
but it was something outrageous. Okay, last question, out of
the four quarterback situations in the North as a coach,
which one would you be most interested Goff under contract
but playing about the peak of his powers, Love under
contract and showing signs of greatness but lacks consistency, Darnald

(47:05):
needing a contract plus JJ on the bench, or Caleb
Williams struggling potential rookie contract. Caleb would one hundred percent
be last without question. Caleb is last because there is
no guarantee that he's good. He's made good plays, can
he be a good player unknown. Anytime you have an

(47:26):
unknown at quarterback, it can easily go in the toilet
as it can go to a Pro Bowl.

Speaker 2 (47:32):
H I would say it'd be pretty hard if are
we talking.

Speaker 1 (47:36):
Head coach or offensive coordinator, because if I'm an offensive coordinator,
it one the Lions. I mean, because they have such
a dominant offensive line. The problem with the Vikings is
their star left tackle did get injured, and anytime you
heard a knee and you're a big guy, you just
kind of keep your fingers crossed. But I think that
gets complicated. So to me, it would be Lions one A,

(48:00):
Packers one B. I mean, they're loaded as well, and
I like Jordan Love a lot. I think the Viking
situation in theory it's really good. It's like they got
Justin Jefferson, they got Jordan Addison, they got a tight end,
they got good running back. But it's like that elephant
in the room of the of the darn Old JJ stuff.

Speaker 2 (48:20):
It's just it usually gets weird, and most times when
stuff gets weird. It derails you. It's not normal that it's.

Speaker 1 (48:27):
Like, yeah, we got Jimmy Garoppolo, we drafted Trey Lance,
we got pretty Usually don't make it out of the
mud on that one. Even when you're good, it just
it can just overwhelm you. Now, I wouldn't bet against them,
but to me, I couldn't place them as high as
the other two. And to me, the Bears are dead.
Last I saw Roma Dunesday's dad was either tweeting or

(48:50):
instagram in something like this. Maybe he quoted a tweet
like what would his kid be doing somewhere else? He
was like one hundred, twelve hundred and ten touches found something.
Obviously Rome's talented. I think, looking back, the Bear should
not have taken Rome of Dunesday, who is good. They
should have taken an offensive lineman.

Speaker 2 (49:10):
Okay, on on that. Have a great weekend. Talk to
everyone soon.
