Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
All right, well come in here we go our two
live in Los Angeles to hurt Hey, Greg co Sal
is gonna join us in a couple of minutes. Here,
Joel Klatt last Hour is gonna join us. I was
just telling Jmac I don't have an addictive personality, but
I don't have a coffee maker. I have an espresso machine,
and I'm not a latte guy because I don't like
(00:47):
any milk, and so on Christmas nothing's open. I won't
be able to have a coffee, and I'm freaking out.
I'm gonna go buy a coffee maker just so I
can have coffee on Christmas, because it's the only thing
in my life that I have to have. I have
three coffees of day free. I just listened to a study.
Oh and it adds like eight years to your life.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Why don't you open it up to the social media
guys and ask Joey Bagt Donuts on Twitter what he
thinks about your coffee addiction. Since you value his opinion
on the NBA so much, but you should to ask
him about coffee.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
I mean, these guys know everything.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Have you ever have you ever walked by a restaurant
and it says under new ownership and you walk by
a restaurant and you're like, you know, I didn't like
that restaurant, but I'm gonna give it a shot. I
do that all the time undernew and you it's a
place that's frustrated to you. It could be a dry cleaner,
it could be a restaurant and you and you used
to like it, but it got sideways. Why Because the
(01:41):
consumers want to be entertained and we want to be fed,
and we want to try new stuff. You just can't
be rigid. And so I always whenever I see a
restaurant like I used to like it and now they
have a new owner, and I'm like, oh, I want
to try it. I'm excited. It's like baseball, and I'm
done with it. And all of a sudden, literally the
first year they sped the game up attendance and ratings
(02:02):
ten percent, and by the way, I think they even
sped it up more this year. The ratings went up
again in fox Set records. The audience wants to love
your product. If it fails, don't blame the audience, blame yourself.
If my ratings tomorrow stink, it's not the audience, it's me.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
I would say the Cup final rating was awful because
this guy named Lebron James was.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Not playing it were You're still going to rely on Lebron?
What is the sixties?
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Well that's a legitimate See, I don't think these king
out there.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Do you have a league or a player.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
You had the Lebron Curry thing that's phasing out, and
you know American they.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
It's been phasing for five years. It's nice if you
have the NFL loses Breeze, Manning and Brady. Ratings are
up because they have a league, not a play.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Well, it's it's a different sport. And the NBA has
their European stars are coming over. The Americans are kind
of sort of rejecting Wemby and Luca and Giannis. They
just don't they don't love them the way they do
American basketball players.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
It's not the end of the world. League will be fine.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
The league's gonna be fine. It's broad finances. Yeah, it's
broadcast part.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
What do we care about those guys.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
We're not one of them. That's true, Okay, Greg Cosel
forty five years NFL films joining us live. All right.
So I watched the Eagles and Steelers, and what was
funny is Philadelphia is better. But it was seventeen to
thirteen and the Steelers couldn't even move the ball. And
if nause Harris doesn't fumble, I'm like, how is Pittsburgh
(03:29):
staying in this game without George Pickens? So I looked
at Pittsburgh and there now Pittsburgh is going to face Baltimore,
and it's funny. As I watched the Steelers in a
weird way before the nause Harris fumble, I'm like, I
can't believe that they're in this game in Philadelphia and
they're not moving the ball. When you watch the film
(03:50):
of Eagles Steelers, what are two or three things that
jumped out to you?
Speaker 5 (03:56):
Well, what really jumped out to me, to be honest
with you, was the Eagles offense, and I know they
didn't necessarily just put a ton of points on the board.
But the Steelers do have a good defense. But I
thought what the Eagles are doing with their coaching staff
and with Jalen Hurts is really really good. It's a
lot of no huddle. Hurts is really good at the
line of scrimmage. He understands what he's seeing. He gets
(04:17):
them in the right play. And this week they added
a ton of no huddle and empty. So it's no
huddle and empty is what they do. So both those things.
What that does is it defines the defense before the
snap of the ball, the no huddle and the empty
and Hurts this week was as decisive as he has
(04:38):
been all season. The ball came out, he had thirty
seven dropbacks colin on only five of them did he move.
He was playing from the pocket, the ball was coming out,
he was hitting his receivers. He looked as good as
he's looked all season long. I think you'll continue to
see them do that, and I think that sustainable for
this reason. They always have the big old line and
(04:59):
the power run game. Yeah, fall back on y because
they didn't have that to fall back on, and it's
not falling back. It's actually their foundation. But if they
didn't have that, I'm not sure they could play that way.
But they always can line up and give the ball
to Barkley. But I thought they did a great job,
a perfect marriage of coaching and Hurts his traits, and
it worked really well and he looked really good.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
So I want to talk Steelers because they faced the
Ravens now Pittsburgh has just really dominated this series. You
were never as big a fan of Russell Wilson as
I was, and many of the fans are, what do
you know when you watch that they didn't do anything
in the first half. They feel very George Pickens dependent.
(05:42):
Where are you on Russ right now? Do you see
a pretty low ceiling here with this offense?
Speaker 5 (05:48):
I mean, I think it's a specific kind of offense.
I think they need the run game to be effective.
I think they need the vertical game to be a factor.
Because Russell Wilson still throws a very good deep ball.
You know, I think I don't know how they coach him,
and I don't know what they ask him to do.
But there's been a number of games this year where
I've noticed that he immediately threw the checkdown and almost
(06:08):
not even waiting to see the routes develop, which leads
me to wonder if maybe that's the way they coach them.
They say, hey, look, if you see a play that
gains eight yards, take it. Let's not worry about anything else.
Take those eight yards. Let's stay on schedule, Let's stay
ahead of the sticks. Let's control the pace and tempo
of the game. We've got a really good defense. Hey,
we'll take a shot here and there. We have a
(06:30):
back who's in Najie Harris who's basically a grinder, not
a big play back. So if we can stay ahead
of the sticks, we can control the pace and tempo
of games. I think that's the way they want to
play on offense.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Okay, so Denver tonight plays the Chargers. I tend to
bet against young rookie quarterbacks on these short weeks. I
think it's really tough, and so I'll take Herbert tonight
there at I just think this is a good spot
for Justin and I think it's a tough spot. Know
I watched Denver last week and they got pushed around
(07:02):
for two hours and then they kind of rebounded. I
think we all realize these teams are a year away,
a draft away. Maybe bo Nicks needs fifteen more starts.
When you look at the Chargers in Broncos tonight, if
I said to you one of them is closer to
(07:23):
the super Bowl bubble, that five or sixteen bubble. Is
there a team Chargers or Broncos when they play the
night that you look at and you think they may
be closer than the other, you like their trajectory more.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
I mean, that's a tough question, you know. I think
Nicks will continue to get better. He's been, for the
most part, pretty stable, pretty consistent as a rookie quarterback.
He's clearly gotten better as the season's gone on. Is
He's going to have some bad moments? Absolutely, That's just
the nature of the NFL, you know. I think for
(07:56):
tonight's game, I think that one thing that might concern me.
We've seen Justin Herbert be under a lot of pressure lately,
and we know he's hurt, and we know he always
plays because that's who he is. But even though the
Broncos have not played great quarterbacks in recent weeks, they
do have a good defense. They've got a lot of speed,
they've got a lot of movements, their secondary. Their secondary
(08:18):
is strong. You know, there's certain players in this league
who no one knows but are really important players to
the team they're on. And PJ. Lock is a safety
for the Broncos who was hurt and is now back.
And they've got a really good safety tandem with PJ.
Lock and Brandon Jones. And they've got two really good
edge players and Jonathan Cooper and Nick Benito. And there's
(08:39):
been some protection issues with the Chargers, and I'm curious
to see how that plays out tonight.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
Okay, you know, I've watched the Packers and the Eagles,
with their athletic quarterbacks, say you know what, we're gonna
throw it a little less, we're gonna lean into the
run game, and I think it's been highly effective. Miami's
got a quarterback with an injury history. He's not at
athlete like a hurt or a love. But when I
watch Miami, I just don't trust them against good teams.
(09:06):
I have four straight games of Tua throwing it over
forty times I watch Miami, they feel two finesse, two
track meet. I just I Mike McDaniel's clever, but Greg,
every time I watch them, I'm like there's no they're there,
they're pretty, they're fun. I do you when you look
(09:28):
at the offense, what do you see?
Speaker 5 (09:32):
And I'm just gonna give you my interpretation of the tape.
I'm not suggesting I know any more than Mike McDaniel does.
He certainly knows more than I do. But my interpretation
watching their offense is I feel like they throw the
ball too much to is average. In the games he
has started this year, Colin, he's averaging forty dropbacks per game.
Now to me, given that he's a pocket quarterback and
(09:52):
not a creator, to me, that's an awful lot. And
that's too much for a couple of reasons. Number One,
I don't think their offensive line is good enough to
handle that. Secondly, they've kind of moved away from having
a sort of foundational, conventional run game. Everything to me
when I watch them is geared toward getting on the
perimeter with their speed. And there's no question they have
(10:13):
a lot of speed, but I always feel like that
they should line up and run the ball. Think about
the rams. We know how good they can be in
the past game. But they line up and they give
the ball to Kyen Williams, who by the way is
not a top two or three back in the league
in terms of physical traits, but they line up and
they run the ball, and they generate and sustain offense.
And I feel like that the Dolphins need to line
(10:35):
up and run the ball. But one can make the
argument they don't really have that kind of back, So
it'll be interesting to see what they do this offseason.
But to me, forty dropbacks a game for Tua, who's
a pure timing and rhythm player. That's what he is,
and he's really good at it, but that's what he is.
That to me is too many dropbacks.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Okay, before I get to the Buffalo Bills a lot,
because I think right now there's an argument Philly in
Buffalo with the two best teams. I want to talk
about Michael Pennix. So this doesn't happen very often, but
last year's quarterback class was so good. Caleb, as you've noted,
is a raw, unique talent. Jaden works, Bow's working, McCarthy
(11:14):
had a very good preseason. Drake May's gotten much better.
I don't know if he's getting great coaching. Yeah, I
think he's gotten much better. And then there's Michael Pennix.
So I like Penix. I thought Pennix was a bigger,
stronger toua. That's what I looked at him, a bigger
stronger too. So he's going to play now for Atlanta
(11:35):
and they still there only one back of Tampa and
they beat him two times now, so if they get tied,
they got to win all three games. Sure, what should
we expect. Let's go back to your You're very good
at this. You're what did you see coming into the league? Strength, weakness, Penicks?
What are we going to see?
Speaker 5 (11:51):
Yeah? I like Michael Pennix coming out, But you know,
the two of comparison is very interesting because he is
a timing, rhythm player and that's what he did in
college under Grubb, who's now the coordinator for the Seahawks.
But to me, the strength of his excuse me, Pennis,
the strength of his game is the fact that he
would drop back, get the ball out, and he had
really good ball location. He was pretty consistent with it.
(12:14):
He knew where to go with the ball. You know,
he does have a little bit of a low delivery
at times, and we'll see how that plays out once
he becomes a starter. But for the most part, I
thought that Penix was a really good prospect. Now he's
not immobile, but he's going to be at his core
a pocket play, yes, But the difference is with it.
The difference is, and you can see the evaluation, the
(12:36):
difference is. And this is just part of it obviously,
as you know, because I send you a lot of
my evaluations, you know how detail they are. But is
there a running football team? They run over sixty percent
with Vijon on first down, and they're playing the Giants
this week and they're going to run the ball. So
barring anything strange happening in this game, Pennix is not
(12:57):
going to have forty dropbacks rilled. In my opinion this
week playing the Giants. If Pennix goes, you know, eighteen
for twenty six for two hundred and five yards and
a touchdown, it doesn't turn it over. I don't think
that this is necessarily a Michael Pennicks game in the
way they're going to approach it. They've got Robinson, they've
got Al's year. They're a running football team, and Bijon Robinson,
(13:19):
for whatever reason, does not get talked about enough because
he is truly a high level traits back in this league.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
Okay, let's talk about a super Bowl team potentially in Buffalo.
Sean mcdermot's a very capable coach. He's a defensive minded guy.
He's got a lot of toughness and grit, and they
draft well their defense right now, Matt Stafford, it was
a seven on seven drill and I'm watching Detroit and
Detroit's doing in that second half kind of whatever they
want to do. What is wrong with Buffalo's defense.
Speaker 5 (13:50):
Yeah, that's a concern. They're not really generating pass rush
pressure with their down four and they're not necessarily a
big blitz team. They started to blitz a little more
in the second half this week against Detroit because they
had to. They were not generating any pressure, and they
predominantly play zone coverage, and they were missing some players
on the back end due to injury. They were missing
(14:12):
both safeties in this game, both of their starting safeties,
and then they had to go to a safety even
beyond that due to injury. So and they were missing
Rasul Douglas, one of their corners. So they're lacking people
right now. But it starts with if you're going to
play zone, think about this way. If you're going to
play zone and you're only going to rush four. You
(14:32):
need your four man D line pass rush to be
a factor. It's not about sacks, but you need to
speed up the quarterback and they've been unable to do that,
and for two weeks their zone coverage has really really struggled.
Now we know Josh Allen's been phenomenal, but you can't
when you get to the big games and the players,
You're not going to put up forty five every week.
That's not going to happen.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
You have been a huge fan. In fact, back in
twenty twenty one, you had a column you said Josh
was the most intriguing quarterback you would watched in forty
five years of watching film. You said, the ball coming
out of his hands is otherworldly. I said, I thought
the most talented quarterback I ever saw in my life
was John Elway, And I said a couple of weeks ago,
(15:13):
Josh Allen makes Elway look small and lumbering. He's just
it just doesn't I'm again you sent me out of college.
You're like you and mel Kiper were both like, if
this thing works, it's gonna be I mean I watched
him at Wyoming. He was reckless and wild. Is he
(15:35):
more talented than Mahomes but mahlomes as the trophy. Is
he more talented.
Speaker 5 (15:40):
In terms of pure physical traits? Yes, don't forget he's
six five to forty that's a trait. It's funny because
in that column I wrote in twenty twenty one, when
I was actually Peter King and asked me to write
his column in the summer, and I did, and it
was twenty twenty one, so he hadn't really become Josh
Allen yet in a strict way. And I said that
he was the most physically gifted quarterback in the league
(16:03):
and maybe one of the most physically gifted i'd seen,
which was different at the time from saying he was
the best. But of course that's how people took it,
but I wasn't saying that. Now, you can always debate
whether the guy's the best or not. Those are fun debates,
but you know you're dealing with a guy that's six five,
two hundred and forty pounds. That is a big, big man.
I've been fortunate enough to stand next to him and
watch him throw a ball where I was literally standing
(16:24):
right next to him and it just comes out of
his hand, differently, Colin. I mean, this guy's a little
different animal. So again, we'll see what happens if their
defense doesn't get short up. Well, you know, that could
be a big problem. It's tough to put up forty
forty five. When you get to the playoffs, you know,
things are different. We'll see. But he is really playing
at a high level. And I think one of the
(16:44):
most important things to me, we know he can make
those special plays. We know that he could always do that.
I think he's playing with a far better sense of
poise and rhythm from the pocket than he ever has,
and that's absolutely critical.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
So the play the thirty three yarders your play of
the week fire away.
Speaker 5 (17:02):
Yeah, yeah, Now this play was thirty three yards to
Ty Johnson. It was the second play of the game.
So let's take a look at it. And the fact
that it was the second play of the game means
that it was game planned. So that's the important point here.
This was game plan. They were playing against a Lion's
defense that was lacking starting players, so they were playing backups,
(17:23):
so particularly at the linebacker position. So what they did
on the second play of the game is they lined
up in what we call twelve personnel, meaning they had
one back and two tight ends, and they knew based
on that what they would get from the defense. Okay,
you're going to see Allen he's in the gun, and
by the way, they do put him under center a
decent amount. But there's two stacked backers here and they're
(17:45):
both backup players, by the way, and they knew that.
So what they wanted to do here this was the
design of the play. They wanted Ty Johnson the back,
to work against Alexander, a linebacker who's only been there
for a couple of weeks. So how did they create
this matchup. Well, they took Shakir and they would put
him in what we call orbit motion, and that caused
(18:06):
a switch in the coverage. You can see that they
changed coverage. They moved inside. So now you have Cooper
matched on Arnold and you're going to have Branch who's
going to run with Shakiir moving inside. So that's what
they knew would happened. Those two things were all part
of the plan. And don't forget when something's the second
player of the game, they know this is going to happen.
(18:29):
And then they took the center and they actually pulled
him even though it's a pass play, and that has
an impact on Alexander because now that's eye candy. He's
looking inside and he's seeing the center pull, so he's
waiting there. So now you're seeing how this whole thing
is going to develop. You're going to get Cooper running
against Arnold on the outside. He's going to remove him,
(18:51):
He's going to lift him by running vertically. And then
what do you get. You get Johnson who worked through
the line of scrimmage and he's working against the linebacker,
Alexander the matchup that they wanted, creating all that space
with the whole the mechanics of the play, and you
get the back on the linebacker one on one. And Colin,
this is what I was talking about with throwing the
(19:12):
ball from the pocket. Yep, this is a beautiful throw.
It's a schemed play, second play of the game. You
couldn't place this ball any better. You couldn't hand it
to him any better than that throw. And I think
that's the area where Josh Allen has so significantly improved,
is he makes these throws now, whereas when he first
came in the league, as you and I know, yeah,
(19:32):
he would throw that ball ten yards over the receiver's head.
Now he makes those throws from the pocket.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
Greg Cosel forty five years NFL Films as always, Greg,
Happy holidays, good seeing you.
Speaker 5 (19:43):
Same to you, Colin, Thanks so much.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
Joel Klatt joining us next hour. Very excited. We got
we got game. We have big bets at the end
of this hour. Clemson at Texas, Indian at Notre Dame Friday.
That's interesting when you have a really good coach pro
or college and you give them extra time, extra times,
not even you give Matt eber Flus a month. What
(20:07):
does it mean if you gave Nick Saban in college
an extra month? What does it mean? So it's gonna
be it's it's really interesting. Dabo Sweeney against Sark that
is that is fiery.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
By the way, did you see that the Notre Dame
coach got a nice little extension this week mar.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
Marcus Freeman because of the rumors he was going to Chicago.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Well, I might have started on this show. Yeah, listen,
that's a that's a really good coach. And like you said,
four weeks to prepare, I think it's four weeks right.
Speaker 4 (20:35):
To prepare for this game.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Well, He's a no nonsense guy. They love to run
the ball, and they hit and they tackle. They Notre Dame.
Looks like they're coach by a very energetic, young defensive coach.
They play smart, power football, they run it.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
They might have after jenty the best running back in
the country, I think. So there's some concern in the secondary,
but uh, I like the Irish.
Speaker 1 (20:55):
Here Friday, this is this could be one of the
best weekends of the year starting Friday Saturday. Can I
get but college en Pro?
Speaker 5 (21:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (21:04):
I don't know what to make of the NFL slate.
We'll eventually get to it, but there's not a lot
of games that.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Jump out at me on Sunday. I like the Chargers tonight.
Rookie quarterbacks on a short week is trouble. I think
they're fifteen and twenty five on these Thursday games. Could
you pulling seas? I think rookie quarterbacks on Thursday it's hard.
And also division rival games are close and ugly anyway,
(21:29):
and the Chargers just got blown out. So anytime a
good coach and a good quarterback get blown out, they
almost always circle the wagons.
Speaker 4 (21:36):
And without JK.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
Dobbins, they've scored seventeen points three straight games, and they've
been non really competitive in the second.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
It's just it doesn't look good.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
They need a running back bad Ashton genty How about that?
Boise State to the Chargers.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
Your heisman guy?
Speaker 6 (21:50):

social media that's Covino and Rich.
Speaker 1 (22:59):
You know it'd be interesting thing. I was listening to
Caleb Williams talk yesterday and you know he's frustrated, but
it's funny like when you watch certain quarterbacks in this league,
Mac Jones, Zach Wilson, Desmond Ridder, your eyes tell you
that doesn't look right. But when you watch Justin Herbert
or Caleb Williams struggle, you're like, now it looks right.
(23:21):
It's got to be the coach. It's like if you
have a movie and there's a bunch of great actors
in it and it gets heavily promoted and it has
a major studio behind it and it bombs, it's probably
a script and director issue, right, Like that's the problem.
You know it should work because you've had success and
so I think Caleb I said this, I think he's
better than Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield in terms of
(23:43):
raw talent, and they're both crushing now because of the
right fit. I always thought Caleb was more Andrew Luck,
not as good out of college, but Andrew Luck where
I thought he would just bulldoze obstacles. Now I picked
the Bears for fourth place, and I picked them to
win seven games, but it has not looked as good
as I thought.
Speaker 5 (24:01):
Now.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
Now I'll say this to defend him. He has not
thrown an interception since Halloween. Okay, he has got right now,
let me look it up. He's got more touchdown passes
than Kyler Murray and Justin Herbert. He's got more passing
yards than Jalen Hurts. So it doesn't look pretty, but
he's not turning it over. He's throwing for yards. It's
(24:27):
just he's got nothing to work with. And the difference
is Andrew Luck was winning eleven games, but Andrew Luck's
division wasn't nearly as good as this division. This division
now is the best division in football. That's why they
got to get the coaching thing right. But Caleb was
talking this week about like losing really affects him.
Speaker 9 (24:45):
Losing is uh, it's one of those things that actually
really affects me.
Speaker 5 (24:50):
It's tough, but I do have.
Speaker 9 (24:52):
The understandment of where I'm at in my career and
where I'll be at, and so having having that understandment
is a important for me myself internally because internally it's
tough internally, you know, when tough times happen. You know,
just human natures is to do the opposite of what
(25:14):
you're doing or what you've been doing or all these
different things. So it's it's the toughest part is fighting
yourself and you know, especially when when there's tough times.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
Yeah, I mean, he's what he's saying is you have
to fight the self doubt. But again there's there's encouraging
things here. But between the chaos with the Bears and
how good this division is, you just can't have hiccups.
I mean, you can't have a Hail Mary lose a game.
You can't have a block kick lose a game. You
can't have a coaching snap who lose Again, they should
(25:43):
have three more wins. This team should have three more wins.
And then you look at him and go, oh, they
got seven. This is a seven win team. So it's
especially for young quarterbacks. I was just talking tonight the
Broncos play the Chargers. Rookie quarterbacks on Thursday night football
on the road are not twenty five. It is hard
when you're a rookie. This is all news stuff, This
(26:05):
is all new territory. But if you're a Bear fan
and you're bummed out, don't blame him for the Hail Mary,
don't blame him for the block kick. Don't blame him
for the coaching snafu against Detroit. This team should have
three more wins. And he's got more touchdowns and yards
than a Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurt. So Justin Herbert and
he hadn't thrown a pick since Halloween, So there is
(26:25):
stuff there. You can see that they're there a lot
of these guys. You look at him and you're like, yeah,
this doesn't look like it's gonna work. When Justin Herbert
was losing as a rookie, I'm like, yeah, that's gonna work.
They just got to get the right coach. That's how
I feel about Chicago.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
J Mack with the.
Speaker 10 (26:39):
News, No, no turn on the news.
Speaker 2 (26:42):
This is the Herdline News.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
We haven't talked too much Kyler Murray lately because he
has stumbled the last few weeks, but Colin, he had
a great moment at a press conference this week talking
about the game against the Panthers. You know, listen, not
everybody's built for the coll Okay, temperatures in care Liner
are expected to be thirty five on Sunday. Kyler Murray
is from Texas, Play.
Speaker 4 (27:04):
Today and m in Oklahoma. Here's his question.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
Here's his answer when asked about playing in thirty five
degree tempts.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
No, I mean, I don't I've played in cold weather before.
It's oh, how cool is supposed to be?
Speaker 5 (27:18):
Like thirty five?
Speaker 4 (27:20):
Yeah, you just hit him that it's gonna be thirty five.
Initially He's like, oh, nobody.
Speaker 1 (27:30):
Oh yeah, it's gonna be cold. I don't think it's
that big of a deal. Thirty five degrees, I'm fine
with you. Get down to thirteen degrees at Columbus Saturday
against Tennessee and Ohio State. Thirteen degrees duty is that
is bone hill.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
Thirty five is very cold to play football. And let
me just ask you this, Colin, where are we with
Kyler Murray what do you.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
Do if you're he's a franchise quarterback based on what
based on leading that team to the playoffs in a
really good division.
Speaker 4 (27:58):
So he's a franchise quarterback. Brock Purty isn't.
Speaker 1 (28:01):
Oh, brock Purty is at thirty million a year. Okay,
I'll pay forty five for Kyler because he is a
playmaker over under in his.
Speaker 3 (28:09):
Career one and a half playoff wins for Kyler Murray.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
He has zero, by the way.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
I would say under just because of he's.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
A franchise quarterback and he's gonna win one playoff game.
Speaker 4 (28:20):
In his career. Daniel Jones has one playoff win.
Speaker 1 (28:24):
Come on, well, he's in a really good division with
McVeigh and Shanahan.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
Excuses excuses Kyler Murray.
Speaker 4 (28:32):
I know that's a boy from UFC. I won't want
hammer next up.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
You know, if we didn't get enough cuss words out earlier,
how about Brian Callahan Colin?
Speaker 4 (28:41):
Oh no, wait, we're doing Kevin Durandia. We're doing Kevin
aeriram my bad.
Speaker 3 (28:44):
The NBA and now has announced a new All Star
game format. Yeah, it's a four team, three game, one
night tournament, and it sounds a little clunky. You want change,
you got Collin, Maybe too much change, Joe.
Speaker 4 (28:58):
The winning team in all the games will be the
first score forty points. I know I can't follow it either.
Very gimmicky. But Kevin Durant was asked about it.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
Okay, here here's kad Well.
Speaker 6 (29:07):
I hate it.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
It's absolutely hey are terrible. All Star Game four mess?
Change it all the four mess oh terrible.
Speaker 10 (29:15):
In my thinon, we should just go back to East
West life and just play a gay I think we've
been try and keep well, bring that flair back somehow
with the All Star weekend.
Speaker 4 (29:26):
But I think we just keep a traditional We'll see
how that's what works.
Speaker 5 (29:30):
You never know, I might be wrong.
Speaker 4 (29:31):
I'm just another guy with another winner pay it, but
we'll see how aur worse.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
You know what they're trying to do, and I'm gonna
give the NBA and Adams Silver credit. What they're saying
is if it's only to forty, it's short and it's intense.
And what they're trying to do is bring back the
intensity to the All Star Game because it's just not now.
It's just like nobody plays defense. But if you're going
to forty guys are like, dude, it's eight minutes of basketball.
So my take is this is all about and I
(29:57):
don't think it's a bad move. It sounds weird, like
the golden it baton baseball sounds weird. So once a game,
it's like having a DH you get to use Bryce
Harper again. And by the way, it's not going to
be a game winning move most of the time, because
even a great baseball team loses fifty games. A great
baseball team loses fifty four games. But this sounds weird.
(30:20):
But in the end, they're just saying, hey, how do
we make this game more intense because people fans are
losing their attention span, And so I think I think
on its premise, I get to move and kind of
like it.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
Okay, I'm you know, people don't like my NBA takes
this week, whatever, whatever, But I'll just say this, the
Internet and social media completely changed all these All Star games.
Speaker 4 (30:43):
The NFL Pro Bowl is completely irrelevant.
Speaker 3 (30:45):
I've been saying we should just do like a forty
yard dash or one hundred dard yard deals comps still competition, right,
MLB All Star Game and I know it's a Midsummer Classic,
come on, it has no juice. And the NBA All
Star Game, everybody's out on it. Nobody wants to play defense.
And I think a lot of that has to do
Colin with all we care about now rightfully is championships.
That's all anybody talks about, legacy titles. Nobody cares if
(31:06):
you in an All Star Game. Nobody cares about the
regular season. And I don't know how we change that.
That's just the way things are now. Like you could
do all this stuff to the NBA l Star Game,
nobody's gonna care. It's like, oh, we're only playing a
forty like a moment.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
What the audience does care about? March Madness ratings were up.
If something feels special, Caitlin Clark games, even regular season
feel special. Ratings up. Playoffs this year, Fox broke records
Otani Lin d'Or Judge Machado.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
You're also naming stars, Caitlyn walking.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
On stars make things special. So what's happening in sports?
UFC fights, Their pay per view numbers are up, the
World Cup fucks up, March Madness up. So what the
audience is telling you with the iPhone? We love it
when it's special. So to me, me, NHL regular season,
(32:02):
not special, NBA, especially when everybody plays the same not special.
Baseball's regular season was up, but it doesn't feel as special.
So I think what is happening is the audience is
telling you when it's special, we will pour in the
NFL and for the record, college football, these bowl games
(32:23):
had been on a downward trend for a decade.
Speaker 4 (32:26):
They're out now. Okay, forget the exdit.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
Wait till you see the ratings saturge for the playoff
games urgent because it feels special, so the audience is
still consuming. It has to qualify though, as Wow, you
can't compare.
Speaker 3 (32:38):
The postseason stuff, mark madness all that to regular season.
It's just a totally different area, right, And like you know,
I get it people are worked up.
Speaker 4 (32:48):
I am a purist. I like the old NBL Star
Game format.
Speaker 3 (32:52):
I like Steph Curry hitting sixty points and uncontested dunks
in nasty exack.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
I'm not a purer. You and I are opposites. You're
very much a traditionalist and a purist, and I am not.
I am new stuff, new ways to do things.
Speaker 3 (33:03):
I mean, I don't want to act like I'm an
old fuddy duddy and I don't like new stuff. But yeah,
I don't have a huge problem with the NBL Star Game.
But again, you're when you're watching stuff. Now you have
a phone, you have a second step.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
But here's what happening. The NBA All Star Game literally
has crashed on once again. The audience is always right,
and they're telling you this is crap.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
It's like the Pro Bowl. Nobody under any of it.
Speaker 1 (33:26):
Used to be the All Star Game used to be
worth an hour of your time. The consumer is telling
you this is crap. And when the consumer tells you
what Adam Silver, to his credit, is going, We're gonna
tweak it. Just listen to the consumer. They'll give you
all the answer.
Speaker 4 (33:41):
I mean listen.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
They've tried tweaks.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
They did the draft, remember the where they had like
guys drafting and then someone was the last pick and you're.
Speaker 4 (33:47):
Kind of tick ticked off. Then they tried the elam
ending like they're they're trying stuff you.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
No, I know, you don't get along with KD.
Speaker 10 (33:53):
I like him.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
KD is funny.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
No, No, I we're fine.
Speaker 6 (33:56):
I like him.
Speaker 4 (33:57):
I'm gonna go ahead.
Speaker 1 (33:58):
I like him.
Speaker 3 (33:59):
I'm gonna go ahead and guess he liked my take
on inside the NBA. That's I'm just gonna put that
out there. Anyways, Let's wrap up with Brian Callahan and
the Titans. Colin Oh My, this was the I think
this wins for the like midweek press conference of the year.
A reporter asked about how fans are calling the Titans soft,
and Brian Callahan lost it on this report.
Speaker 11 (34:21):
Who I think, to be honest with you, I think
guess complete and total if you want my honest opinion.
These guys are tough man. They go after it every day.
That makes me relatively angry that that would be some presumption.
That's that means you just don't you know, he don't
do anything about it, that you don't know what you're
talking about. I don't know what you're looking at, so
I don't. I won't stand for I'm not gonna stand
(34:43):
for anybody calling his football team saw.
Speaker 5 (34:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (34:46):
First of all, Tennessee's not soft. They're bad at quarterback.
There's a big difference. I never look at them as soft.
I think the Callahan's historically want to play smash mouth football. Yeah,
the Titans have issues. Miami all argue feels soft when
I watch Miami play against the Northern team in cold weather.
They come across as very finesse. I've never thought Tennessee
(35:09):
is saw. I think their quarterback situations.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
Well, if they can get Donald, they might be a
bye team for I don't know how Darnald will like
outside outdoor game.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
I'm sure indoor.
Speaker 4 (35:20):
Games, man. I mean, Jared Goff looks like one of
the best quarterbacks in the league.
Speaker 5 (35:23):
Well he is.
Speaker 3 (35:24):
He's unbelievable that he's going outdoors this weekend in Chicago.
I know it's gonna be what is it like ten
degrees in Chicago?
Speaker 8 (35:28):
I know?
Speaker 4 (35:29):
Is that why you're not going there this weekend?
Speaker 3 (35:30):
Huh?
Speaker 1 (35:31):
I'm going there in a couple weekends.
Speaker 4 (35:32):
Little Chilian sound one of us.
Speaker 1 (35:34):
One of us is willing to expand his horizons.
Speaker 5 (35:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
J McK with the news.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by her Love.
Speaker 1 (35:43):
We're making big bets on the college football playoffs.
Speaker 6 (35:46):
Next, be sure to catch live editions of The Herd
weekdays in noonon eastern nin am Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (35:55):
All right, welcome back, Big Bets. Brought to you by
Draft King Sportsbook the crown is year yours. Here we
go with our big bets.
Speaker 6 (36:05):
It's time for big bets. Colin and j Nack make
their favorite big ten bets of the week.
Speaker 1 (36:15):
Okay, a lot of lousy weather. I'm gonna take Indiana
plus seven and a half. I think it's a low scoring,
ugly game with a lot of running. These are very
good defenses, especially I like both of these coaching staffs.
I think if you give these coaching staffs time, it's
going to be a fairly competitive game. I think Notre
Dame is the better team and Notre Dame will win.
(36:36):
But again, we're talking about a first snowy, cold outdoor.
People always talk about the big ten weather. The regular
season's done by late November. You get one crappy weather game.
This is a bad, historically bad weather game. I think
Notre Dame wins, but I would take the hook at
seven and a half.
Speaker 4 (36:53):
Interesting.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
I am head to head against you, my friend. I
got Notre Dame winning and covering at home. I just
know in when they stepped up in class this year
against Michigan or Ohio State, they did not look good.
Speaker 4 (37:04):
You want to be produced.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
Sixty six to seven fine is awesome, but this is
a Notre Dame team, Like you said, extra time to
prepare for Freeman amazing run game and Colin, I will
just say, this is Newfound territory. We've never had a
playoff game where someone's at home. That's like a big edge.
How much of an edge, I don't know. I tried
to propose to the staff that we do teasers because
I love Notre Dame and a teaser down to win
(37:25):
by one, but I do think they can cover seven
and a half this ground game.
Speaker 4 (37:29):
We could be looking at three hundred yards on the
ground for Notre Dame.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
Okay, I'm gonna take Clemson Texas the under fifty two.
I think Texas knows they have a significantly better roster
and they'll be conservative like they have the last three weeks.
I don't think they're gonna unveil any of their playbook
to let the next couple of teams they play see it.
They they're in line to face like an Oregon They're
not gonna let them see anything. I think Clemson number
(37:53):
three ranks scoring defense.
Speaker 5 (37:54):
I don't think.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
I don't think Clemson can win, but I think Clemson
can keep it close. I think the pressure is on Texas.
They'll come in with a fairly conservative game plan close
to the vest. Will beat them all. Take the under
fifty two.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
I'm on this game as well. I do like Texas
favor by twelve.
Speaker 3 (38:10):
I know it's a double digit spread, but I just
Clemson felt like they won their super Bowl to get
into this game beating SMU. They came out awesome and
then petered out. SMU went to the up tempo attack
second half. Clemson could not get stops calling. You know,
I'm looking at some arch manning props once they get released.
I think we see some arch packages. Would not be
surprised if Texas drops.
Speaker 4 (38:30):
A forty burger. This is like a forty to thirteen.
Speaker 5 (38:32):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (38:33):
I don't think highly of Clemson. They have not been
good all season, and I'm all in on Texas. I
think Texas is live to win the whole tame well.
Speaker 5 (38:40):
I do too.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
I'm gonna take again. I'm gonna take the plus seven
and a half in thirteen degree weather Tennessee to keep
it close against Ohio State. I think their defensive line
is going to force Ohio State to throw the ball
forty times. And I don't trust Will Howard and Ohio
State didn't trust Will Howard against Michigan. Tennessee has a
great run led the SEC and rushing in a great
(39:02):
D line. When you plan crappy weather, those are really
important units and factors. I think Ohio State's better. I
think Ohio State is gonna win this game. But the
pressure is on Ohio State. What if their first series
they punt, Tennessee scores, takes a lead, and that crowd
starts grumbling. I'm gonna take the Hawk. I like dogs.
(39:23):
I think the dogs are gonna be competitive in these games.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
Dogs are barking in December. I'm against you again, headshead, Oh,
somebody's in some trouble. I got the buck Geys covering
seven and a half. I just again, I believe that
that Ohio State Michigan game complete overreaction. Everybody's bailing on
Ohio State. Tennessee is the public dog. Every Joe public
who goes into Vegas this weekend is betting Tennessee. They
all like Yet the numbers not really coming down.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
It just means the pros are voting on Toaho State.
Speaker 4 (39:51):
I think they show up here. I do have concerns
about Will Howard. No doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (39:54):
But I've got some concerns about Nico the quarterback for Tennessee.
This guy's highly touted. I haven't always seen it. I
know the defense is good, but again, like you said,
cold weather, Ohio States had a lot of time to
prepare for this.
Speaker 4 (40:05):
I think the stadium is gonna be juiced up.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
My big question to you is if Ryan Day somehow
loses this game, are they firing him?
Speaker 1 (40:13):
Like, No, I don't think they can. I like competitive games.
I like competitive games. You like three blowouts.
Speaker 3 (40:20):
I think the only reason I don't have Penn State
here is because SMU is chucking duck all the time.
They're gonna come in the back door. They're not gonna
quit throwing, so I didn't put them on here. But
I like the favorites this weekend. I'm leaning toward the
home teams with extra time to prepare and really good coaches.
Speaker 4 (40:35):
I think Ryan Day's one of the best coaches in
the country.
Speaker 1 (40:37):
Freeman, and would you if Ryan Day lost, you wouldn't
fire him?
Speaker 9 (40:42):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (40:43):
I mean I would tear up my Ohio State futures
tickets that from the summer. I really thought they were
the best team in the country, and that loss at
Michigan kind of change some things for me. I don't
know if Dave's completely safe if they lose this game. Colin,
come on, well you love to Michigan again and then
losing at home.
Speaker 1 (41:00):
They've lost four straight to Michigan And next year it's
back in an arbor and the Buck and the Wolverines
have the number one high school quarterback, Like this was
the year to beat Michigan.
Speaker 4 (41:10):
Well, you know, Ship Kelly came out this week.
Speaker 3 (41:12):
I don't know if you heard the press conference and
he was like, yeah, you know, I didn't do a
great job of getting the ball to our guys. You're
a smith, the superstar receiver, the other receiver who's a
first rounder.
Speaker 4 (41:21):
Like, they got to throw the football. Stop this running it.
Tennessee's run defense is damn good. They better come out
and throw the football.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
I don't know if Howard totally delivers. I got faith
in Ryan Day and Chip Kelly, Right, you got me nervous.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
On Well, guys, no, I mean you've had a very
good year doing this. I think it's going to be
a close weekend. You think it's going to be blown.
Speaker 4 (41:39):
Platt on this game.
Speaker 1 (41:40):
Well, we'll ask him. Okay, I don't know, maybe better
than that. Ohio State's got the better team. Yeah, I'm
not doubting that they've also got all the pressure.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
Yeah,
