Here we go live in Los Angeles, hour two and

Thanks for making us part of your day. In three minutes,
Greg Cosell is gonna stop by and excited for that,
we're going to talk about all the playoff games in
the matchups. It's interesting. I look this morning, Jmac. We

(00:47):
got fourteen teams in the playoffs. The best eight quarterbacks
won their division. So it's more and more it's becoming
a quarterback centric league. But I think coaching matters, more,
experience matters, more, home field can matter. We can matter
more based on like some quarterbacks I don't trust going
into cold weather, Josh Allen, I do, Mahomes, I do.

(01:07):
Big strong quarterbacks. I do So here's the NFL Wild
Card weekend schedule. I put these teams in three tiers
so you can follow along if you're on TV or radio.
Here the first tier is it's kind of the trophy class.
They can hoist a trophy. I think five teams can
win the Super Bowl. I think it's Philadelphia and Detroit,

(01:28):
Kansas City, Baltimore, and Buffalo. They can hoist a trophy. Now,
the next class are teams that I think can win
a playoff game or two. They can win game or
games in the playoffs. I think Green Bay, Minnesota, Rams, Chargers,
Bucks could win a couple of games. I think Tampa
is the weakest of that group, but I think they
could win two games. And then there's those who have
been invited and they certainly earned it more of a

(01:50):
participation trophy. Pittsburgh, Houston, Denver and Washington. I would be
surprised if they won a game. So the trophy certainly
capable of making life uncomfortable. That's not to say the
teams in the second tier couldn't beat a team in
the first tier. And it's not saying Washington can't beat

(02:11):
Tampa or the Broncos can't beat the Buffalo Bills. But
I kind of feel like there's three tiers. And with
that we go to Greg Cosel joining us Live forty
five years NFL films. So just from the outside, I
look at the Chargers Texans and I think coach, quarterback
and consistency on defense, bolts bolts, bolts. Chargers are across

(02:34):
the board. But it's the playoffs. CJ. Stroud can be streaky,
you know, Chargers in big games, even with hardball. I
don't know yet. What does the film say, what are
you expecting in that matchup?

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Yeah, I'm kind of looking at the Chargers O Texans
d believe it or not. You and I have spent
a lot of time talking about Stroud this year. We'll
put that aside for the moment. But I think that
the Texans are a really interesting defense because over the
last many years, in sort of the NFL history, so
to speak, what are the two positions that everybody says

(03:11):
that are premium positions on defense, edge, pass, rusher and corner,
And those are two positions that the Texans have really
quality players. They've got Hunter and Anderson on the edge.
They've got Stingley, who's a top three corner in this league.
Now he doesn't necessarily match up. He almost always plays
left corner. And the rookie lassiters had a terrific season.

(03:33):
Where they're hurting is they've lost their two slot corners,
so now they're sort of working with someone. They picked
up Bryan who got cut by New England, and he's
been playing slot corner. And the reason I mentioned that
is that's predominantly where McCaffrey McConkie lines up. Alad McConkie,
and McConkie's had an outstanding year and I'm just curious

(03:55):
how that's going to play out because the Texans do
like to play man coverage.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Yeah, all right, let's talk Denver going into Buffalo. Buffalo
is a big favorite for a reason. What I want
to concentrate on is Bonnicks because rookie quarterbacks don't do
all the playoffs. First game, especially on the road, bon
Nicks against Buffalo's defense, could he succeed? Could he move
the chains?

Speaker 4 (04:19):
Yeah? You know that's really interesting about the Bills defense.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
That's my concern in the playoffs for Buffalo, to be
honest with you, because they don't really have a dominant
pass rush. Von Miller's had some good snaps in recent games,
but he's not going to play forty or forty five
snaps in the game. Their secondary, I think has some questions.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Now.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
They do get their two starting safeties back in Hamlet
and Rap, but it's not a great secondary. So I'm
just very curious to see how this plays out because
I think that Denver can have some success throwing the football.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
Now.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
The issue for them is they've not been able to
run the ball with consistency.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
But I will say this, colin the other side of
the ball is not being talked about a lot. We
know that Josh Allen can be special. We know that
their offense in any given game can put up thirty
that's what they average. But this Denver defense is very
very good, and they've got a lot of really good players.
They're very good up front, and they've got a really

(05:17):
good corner in Certan and a really good safety combination
that a lot of people don't know about in Lock
and Brandon Jones. So this game, I think this game
could be I mean, I could be wrong. Buffalo could
win thirty five to ten and no one would be surprised.

Speaker 4 (05:31):
I understand that.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
But there's a part of this game that really intrigues
me that thinks it could be a close game.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
So I think Philadelphia's got the best roster in the NFL,
and I think one of the ways to beat them
is to keep that dominating O line Saquon Barkley off
the field. You're not gonna beat I mean, you got
to move the chains against Philadelphia because if you give
Saquon and aj Brown and Hurts and that old line
can just suffocate you. It's a little bit like playing.

(05:59):
The best way to beat them is don't let that
old line control the clock, the game, and the tempo.
How does green Bay's offense match up against the Eagles defense?

Speaker 3 (06:10):
And this is where you go into the weeds a
little bit, because what will Green Bay do in terms
of personnel? Because keep this in mind, the Eagles defense
has been really, really good. And that's one reason the
Eagles can play offense the way they have all season long,
because they've not really won a lot of games big
and they've not been ahead big and a lot of
games going into the fourth quarter.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
So defensively, what have they become.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
They've become a nickel defense since Week five, I believe
it was when Cooper dejen became the slot corner. They
play about eighty five percent of their defensive snaps in nickel.

Speaker 4 (06:42):
That's who they are.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
So the question is, will Green Bay, now that they
have two really good tight ends. Craft has been really
good and Musgrave is back, and Musgrave was considered a
better prospect than Craft, will the Packers play a lot
at a two tight ends?

Speaker 4 (06:57):
Colin and see how the Eagles play.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
Will the play with their nickel where they want to play,
or will they go with their base defense and take
Degene off the field, which is not how they really
want to play. I think that's something to look at
early in this game because that will dictate, based on
what you said, if they can control the ball with
their run game, which I think they need to do.

Speaker 4 (07:18):
Both teams are run based.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Yeah, So I like Tampa to beat Washington, And one
of the reasons is I think Washington will have trouble
running the ball and I think they'll have trouble stopping
the run. So to take a rookie quarterback on the
road without much of a run game, and I think
Baker Mayfield, I just I look at Tampa's run game

(07:40):
and I think not Baker, not Jayden. I think the
Bucks run game is the story of this game. What
say you?

Speaker 4 (07:49):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (07:49):
And I think that's fair. See, the Bucks have become
a really interesting offense. They run a lot of plays
because Baker Mayfield has the third most dropbacks in the
NFL of any quarterback. Yet they run the ball really,
really well. Irving has been kind of a revelation. I mean,
I really liked him coming out of Oregon, but he's
five nine and a half one ninety two and I'm
not sure anybody.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
I certainly didn't think he could carry the ball over.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Two hundred times as a rookie, and he's done that,
and he's been really really good, and he's dynamic and explosive.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
Their run game is really good. Now.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
The Commanders do have a very good defensive front, so
that's a definite matchup in this game. But the other
thing that really strikes me about this game Todd Bowles.
Since about week twelve, we know he blitzes, but Colin,
since week twelve, he's blitzing like crazy. Now Jayden Daniels
has been very good against the blitz, but that doesn't
deter Todd Bowles. He doesn't care who he's playing against.

(08:43):
So I think that's a real critical matchup in this game.
How the Commanders handle the Bucks blitz concepts.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
So the game the Monday night game. Jamack loves the Rams,
and I will admit Darnald struggling against Detroit gives me
some I guess here's my feeling on Minnesota. I love
the coach, I love the quarterback, I love the receivers.

(09:10):
I don't necessarily love the O line. I think they're
well coached, but I don't think they're personnel's great. The
Rams are at home. I think they've got a more stable,
talented team unit to unit, whereas I think there's some
stars in Minnesota but a few holes. I'm kind of

(09:31):
interested Rams young defensive front is healthy, yeahwitchy, and I
kind of think they match up well with the Vikings
O line. What do you think?

Speaker 4 (09:43):
I agree? I agree one thousand percent.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
And the tape shows that the Vikings O line has
struggled throughout this season in past protection and Darnold one
of the reasons he's become really good this year is
he's willing to stay in the pocket and deliver the
ball late in the down with bodies around him.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
But this rams D line.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Particularly their their sub front where they have Turner and
Fisk inside Young and Verse outside. I think that's going
to cause problems for this Vikings O line.

Speaker 4 (10:12):
And you could make the argument.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
That right now as a rookie that Jared Verse is
the best speed to power rusher in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (10:18):
Wow, he's going to give problems to this to this
O line.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
So that to me is it'll be an overlooked element
of this game because everybody, of course, focuses on the
quarterback and the skill players. But I think that that
could be where this game is won and lost.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
You know, one of the things we were talking about
the Chicago Bears earlier, and I said, listen, you gotta
you got to maximize as much as you can Caleb Williams.
But it can't just be about Caleb Williams. Joe Burrow
didn't make the playoffs because they're two quarterback centric and
they're bad other spots. And I look at Baltimore and
Lamar wins the MVP, and what do they do. They

(10:54):
go get him Derrick Henry. They don't say, Lamar, we
want more of you. They're like, you know what, we
want this to last A long time. We want to
be a little less Lamar reliant. That's why I respect
the Ravens so much. So I want to talk about
Derrick Henry, not just Lamar here against the Steelers, because
I love an organization that has a superstar and doesn't

(11:15):
make him put the Superman cape on every week. I
think bald. I think Lamar completed ten passes once this
year and they won a game.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
I love that.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
Let's talk Derrick Henry Ravens against the Steelers.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
Which is a lot like the Eagles too, and that's
Jalen Hurts hasn't thrown a lot of balls in a
lot of games.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
So you talk about Derrick Henry.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
You know, they lost once to the Steelers and they
just didn't give the ball to Henry very much.

Speaker 4 (11:38):
The second time when they won, they did.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
You know, I think if you talk to Todd Monkin,
he'll tell you that Henry is the key to what
they do.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
Now we know how great Lamar is. That's no knock
on Lamar Jackson.

Speaker 3 (11:49):
He's had his best year and he's an unbelievable player,
and he dictates.

Speaker 4 (11:53):
Many things defensively.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
But you could argue that Derrick Henry is really the
starting point and when they give him the football, everything
works off that and their run game is extremely multiple.

Speaker 4 (12:04):
So Henry has been terrific.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
I mean, in any other year, the fact that he
gained over nineteen hundred yards, No one's even talking about
that because of Saquon deservedly so. But nineteen hundred yards
isn't bad either, So it does start with him. But
I think Lamar has in many ways improved this year
as a passer.

Speaker 4 (12:22):
And when I say that, you know, you can look
at the numbers.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
We know the numbers, they're great, But I think there's
things I look for when I watch tape that tell
me whether a quarterback is playing at a high level.
And there's examples of that, and actually we've seen it
throughout the year. We can go to the play right
now if you like, because that's a there's a great
example of it, and it was from last week. I mean,
this is a touchdown he threw to Andrews and it

(12:44):
just you know, you see it now. It looks a
good throw, pretty routine, but this was not in the
least bit routine as a throw. And what you're gonna
see here is you're going to see Jackson he's in
the gun. They're in twenty one personnel, which means they
have recard on the field and there he is. So
they have two backs because he's essentially a back, and
they've got Andrews here, and he's split the single receiver

(13:08):
split to one side of the field, and he's going
to run a corner rout. Okay, and they run this
a lot with him in the red zone. Now, what
they're going to do is take Mitchell, who's a very
fast back. He's going to run into the flat. So
it's really a two receiver route to that side.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
Of the field.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
Now, look at Lamar sees, he sees a post safety.
He knows that that safety will not be a factor
at all on Andrews's corner route. He's not going to
get there. So he knows now that he's got the
matchup that he likes. Andrews versus Delpit, the safety for
the Browns. Now delp it's a very good player, but
you know he'll take Andrews one on one against any

(13:45):
safety in the league, certainly in the red zone.

Speaker 4 (13:47):
So as this play develops, we stop it right here.

Speaker 3 (13:50):
This is where Lamar has made the decision to throw
the football. Okay, now he sees this, he's not going
to throw it right there. He's going to throw it
to a spot. But he's made the decision to throw
the football. So this is about timing. This is anticipation,
and now it requires really precise ball location. And this

(14:11):
is really what you look because look at the Delpit
now where he is in relation to Andrews. He's outside
of Andrews. But Lamar knows with Delpit's body turned that way, Colin,
he cannot play this throw. So he throws this ball.
This is the kind of thing you look for when
you study quarterbacks, these kinds of throws.

Speaker 4 (14:30):
And the ball location is absolutely precise. It's perfect, and
you get a really good look at that from this angle.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
So these are the things you look for. You know,
most quarterbacks can throw to guys who are open. Throws
like this really dictate how a quarterback's playing. Lamar has
made more of those kinds of throws this year than
ever before in his career.

Speaker 1 (14:50):
Yeah, my staff just wrote down that Zay Flowers has
been ruled out, which I don't love because I do
think I'm a surprise. Yeah, he can be a little
hit and miss. There's some draw, but he has added
He has added an explosiveness, which I think is an element.
Baltimore's no fun to play. The quarterback's the fastest guy
in the field. Deren henries. They's just no fun to play.

(15:12):
And that's why, By the way, I want to ask
you one big broad question, and I want to go
back to Harbaugh and the Chargers again and we can
show some video and talk about this. But defensively, it's
the same darn team. You know, they added Alt and
lad mcconkiin and they got a couple of fifth round
corners out of college. How in the world has Jesse

(15:35):
Minter taken the same personnel and they've gone from thirty
second to first. What does the film say on the
Chargers revelation on defense?

Speaker 3 (15:44):
He does a lot of different things that For instance,
they're a big team playing what we call big nickel
with three safeties, So they take Derwin James and they
basically have made him a multi dimensional, dimensional, movable chess piece,
and he is a dynamic player who can pretty much
do anything on the football field, and he's become foundationally
a very important piece.

Speaker 4 (16:04):
Then one player who was there last year, Colin and
you know, him from USC twoy Polo two. He is
a really really good football player not talked about enough.

Speaker 3 (16:13):
Another player that can line up inside, can line up outside.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
You can stand him up in the middle of your defense.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
He's a really really good player who doesn't get talked
about enough because Bosa Mac James. But you know, they
just have some players who are multi dimensional, multi positional
and can really affect games.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
Yeah, Greg Cosel, forty five years at NFL Films never
gets old. Great scene you again, thanks, Colin, appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (16:41):
You bet.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
Yeah, you've just seen. This has been the year of
many things, but I think it's been the year where
quarterback importance has really taken off. Eight for eight, best
quarterback won their division. I also think you have gotten
such examples like we always knew coaches were important, but

(17:03):
there's a reason coaches now should be making fifteen million
bucks a year. Jim Harbaugh, Sean Payton, that's what they
I mean when Belichick and Brady for years and years
we always thought it was kind of fifty to fifty.
Thing is Denver should not be in the playoffs, and
I like bo Nicks Sean Payton got them into the playoffs.
The Chargers should not be this good defensively. Offensively, they're good,

(17:26):
they're not special. They lack some speed and consistency. They
are not quite as dynamic at tight end or running
back or receiver as you'd like. But boy, this I
mean you talk about between Harbaugh and Sean Payton, the
level of coaching is and and it's and let me
just let me just throw in Dan Campbell. The fact
that eighteen different guys on the I are for Detroit

(17:50):
twelve on defense and yet they've held up very well.
I look at Detroit not just as the head coach,
but the staff of Campbell, Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson
that is as good as and by the way, in
Minnesota pick for fourth Brian Flores, Kevin O'Connell. You're seeing
this year, You're seeing a big gap in coaching in

(18:13):
this sport. A good stuff Today. John Middlecoff, my buddy,
former NFL scout's going to talk about the Niners and
the Eagles and the Raiders. He knows all three very well.

Speaker 1 (18:44):
I will say tonight. James Franklin, coach of Penn State,
Marcus Freeman, coach of Notre Dame. James Franklin, Now, it
should be noted Penn State used to be an independent,
right won a couple of natties that way, and now
they're part of the Big Ten. But James Franklin says, hey,
this whole Notre Dame independent thing, I'm not a big
fan of.

Speaker 5 (19:04):
I think it should be consistent across college football. I think, again,
this is no knock at coach or Notre Dame. But
I think everybody should be in a conference. I think
everybody should play a conference championship game, or no one
should play a conference championship game. I think everybody should
play the same number.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
Of conference games.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
The truth is, I disagree with this because college football
and college basketball are uniquely quirky, and they're not the
NBA and they're not the NFL. I mean, let's be honest,
we let a Mountain West team into the playoffs. Really
think they're one of the twelve best teams. Nah, It's
kind of part of the sport college basketball. We put

(19:48):
teams in that I couldn't find them a map. Do
I think they're one of the sixty eight best teams? Nah,
but we just sort of let them in. Notre Dame
is different. They have academic standards that other programs often
do not. Many players going to other fine universities can't
get in or handle the workload of Notre Dame. Notre
Dame doesn't need your money. Notre Dame doesn't have to

(20:11):
be part of your conference, and I'm okay with that.
Between their donors and national alumni, they play at a
different level. Not everybody has to be homogenized. That's one
of the problems with pro basketball. All the teams play
the same. I like an independent. By you as an independent,
you have service academies, you have Notre Dame. Not everybody

(20:33):
has to be jammed into a massive conference. And by
the way, this has always been a sport of have
and have nots financially. I mean, you go back to
the nineteen fifties, sixties, seventies eighties, it's overwhelmingly outside of
like an Oregon, It's mostly the same programs at the
end of the year. So I like Notre Dame's independence.
I think they have standards that are above many of

(20:54):
the other schools. I think college football is better with
Notre Dame flourishing. Joel Klatt Earlier today, Stop Mayan talked about,
you know, the cries that Notre Dame should join a conference.

Speaker 6 (21:07):
You can understand why coaches would want them in a conference.
I think that conferences inherently are more difficult than being independent,
although you know, with their scheduling partnership with the a SEC,
it kind of depends on how that league is going.
It was not very very good this year. And then
the other side of this would just be the financial impact.
And Notre Dame and people around Notre Dame have told

(21:28):
me that their independence is vital to the way that
they raise money for their institution writ large, not just
their athletic department and their football program. So that is
that is a big piece of this. It's it's important
to them on many different levels, including the donor base
feeling like their dollars really matter.

Speaker 1 (21:47):
Also, yes, Ohio State next year. I looked at their schedule.
It's much tougher than Notre Dames. Okay, you know that's
the reality of it. But also Notre Dame in this
new format currently can never get a bye. So Notre
Dame could run the table and they'd still have to
play an opening game. So whereas Oregon may have had

(22:08):
a tough opening game, but they got a buy, so
Notre Dame. According to the new format, Notre Dame never
gets a buy. And so I just again, independent movie studios,
independent bands, independent teams, independent political candidates, to me are
vital for certain companies and enemies and industries, and I

(22:32):
like Notre Dame not having to bow down and be
part of every conference. Do I think they fit the
Big Ten? Absolutely, there is no question. Academically and athletically,
I think they fit the Big Ten, not only in
the geographical footprint, but they fit the conference. But the
fact that they're like, yeah, not that interested. Oregon and

(22:55):
Washington were pleading to get into the conference and Notre
Dame's like, eh, pass, That's why they're Notre Dame. That's
why they're different. They don't beg and financially, they don't
have to borrow j Mack with.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
A news This is the Herd Line News.

Speaker 7 (23:17):
We touched on the Jalen Hurts concussion protocol earlier. Well,
how about his opponent at quarterback?

Speaker 8 (23:22):
And that's Jordan Love.

Speaker 7 (23:24):
Everybody's curious in this Fox wild card matchup, how healthy
is Loved going to be? He's got an elbow injury,
he's dealing with limited a practice, and then he said,
and maybe this is games and ship we'll see.

Speaker 8 (23:37):
I'm hopeful. H what Malik Willis has also been limited
with a thumb injury.

Speaker 7 (23:42):
Eagles four and a half point favorites at the link.

Speaker 8 (23:46):
Your thoughts on Jordan Love.

Speaker 1 (23:47):
I think it's a tough spot for Green Bay. I
think they could beat Philadelphia if everybody was healthy and
it was in Lambeau. But I think Jordan Love is
still an ascending player. I don't think he's a finished product.
I feel like there are certain players like Justin Herbert
I felt by the end of his first year I
kind of had a finished product, Like I just thought

(24:08):
he had so many college starts. I kind of feel
with bo Nicks, I'm getting close to a finished product.
Jaden Daniels, I feel with Jordan Love it was Eustas
staid it was second tier football came in and sat
still doesn't have a ton of starts. I feel like
he's an ascending player, and I at this point, I
think this is a tough spot for him. But I
will say, if anybody could get hot, he hasn't been

(24:29):
turning the ball over. If you told me there was
an upset this weekend and it was Matt Lafleur beating
Nick Siani and Jordan Love went off, I would not
be shocked.

Speaker 8 (24:39):
Has Love been a top ten quarterback this year?

Speaker 1 (24:43):
I think I consider him a top ten quarterback.

Speaker 4 (24:45):
In the league.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
But this season, well, I mean you could argue Maholmes
wasn't a top ten quarterback for much of this year
outside of the winning.

Speaker 8 (24:53):
Look at that interesting.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
Well, I don't live in the moment. I think Jordan
loves size, arm, talent, winning.

Speaker 8 (25:00):
What do you want to live in the past.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
I like to live in the future.

Speaker 7 (25:05):
The president is the best place to be. The next
up is Brock Purty.

Speaker 8 (25:10):
Oh boy, this is gonna be.

Speaker 7 (25:12):
I hope everybody's ready for like two and a half
three months of Rock Purty extension.

Speaker 4 (25:16):
Talking.

Speaker 7 (25:17):
John Lynch says he's their guy, Kyle Shanahan. Here he
is talking about Brock perty the leader.

Speaker 8 (25:22):
Of the Niners.

Speaker 9 (25:24):
Brock is the leader of our team. I've loved these
three years with Brock. I plan on being with Brock
here the whole time I'm here. So like, Brock's been
a stud He's a guy, got a lot of confidence
in them just as a human. But it starts with
what he's down in the field these last two and
a half years, capable of.

Speaker 4 (25:42):
Winning the Super Bowl with them we just almost did.

Speaker 9 (25:45):
And oh and I know he's capable of getting the
Niners super Bowl in the future.

Speaker 1 (25:50):
Okay, you're not feeling it, huh.

Speaker 8 (25:53):
I like to plan on.

Speaker 1 (25:55):
I don't want to be known as a hater because
I think he's a franchise quarterback. I just, oh, I
think he's good enough to be a franchise quarterback. I
just don't think in a world of Lamar and Herbert
and Allen and Jayden, and I don't think you're going
to hoist a trophy. But I think he's a franchise quarterback.

Speaker 7 (26:13):
He was seconds away from hoisting the trophy last year
against the Chiefs. So let me ask you who gets
a bigger bag this offseason, Brock Purtty or your guy
Sam Donald.

Speaker 1 (26:25):
Well, Sam Darnold will probably be franchised, So Brock Purty,
I don't think the Vikings are unless he puts up
a stinker.

Speaker 7 (26:35):
You mean, like he Disney in week eighteen eighteen to
forty one. Come on, hey, Buck sixty six with.

Speaker 1 (26:42):
Them Tiger Woods shanked in his prime a couple of drives, not.

Speaker 7 (26:45):
On eighteen on the Masters, because that's what that was
last week for Sam Darnald.

Speaker 1 (26:49):
Right, I'm on, I got five five yeah, right, Rock Purty.

Speaker 7 (26:53):
Anyways, let's wrap it up with Josh Allen. He's gunning
for his first career MVY Award and listen, he's been
amazing this season, partially thanks to O. C.

Speaker 8 (27:05):
Joe Brady, who took over in the middle of last season.

Speaker 7 (27:08):
Brady is one of the names floating around for head
coaching jobs, and Alan was asked about his impact on Buffalo.

Speaker 10 (27:14):
He hasn't done anything for us. Team should stay away
from him. He's been fantastic. Uh, you know, coming into
a situation last year that was it's not easy to
switch play callers midyear, and he came in and you know,
from that day on, if you look at our splits
are our success that we've had as a team. You know,
it's noticeable. So he's one of the most positive guys

(27:36):
in the building. He's always got juice and energy for
the guys. I think that's something that we we love
and appreciate about him. And he's asrael as that come.

Speaker 1 (27:46):
I don't know if Brady's gonna get a head coaching job. Well, well, well,
what about New Orleans? What about I think New Orleans
is going to take Tampa's OC and weaken oh Liam
coleen Key. I think that it'll weaken the Bucks as
it strengthens O.

Speaker 7 (27:59):
Well, Canal has started to turn it on at the
end of the season in Carolina at times some time,
So listen, I'm not bashing Brady. He was awesome right
at LSU with Burrow. He's awesome in Buffalo with Josh Allen.
What if Burrow and Allen have in common com they're
really ridiculously talented quarterbacks. What happened when he didn't have
one in Carolina? Everybody got run off quickly, Like if

(28:22):
you have a quarterback, you're gonna be successful.

Speaker 1 (28:24):
Right, Well, that's what I say. That's what I say
about your buddy, Ben Johnson, what coordinator couldn't move to
change with the Lions running backs, O line, tight end, quarterback.
I mean, you guys are.

Speaker 7 (28:35):
All once Patriots. That's why he's talking Patriots or Bears
and not Jets, right, Ben Johnson.

Speaker 1 (28:41):
I mean, I just think we've we've I'll contend that
the most amazing on resume, the most amazing coordinator. Detroit's
the defensive guy who is missing half as starters for
the year, and yet they're going out and putting the
hammerlock on people. But I understand offenses and hooking lateral

(29:01):
and don't downplay hooking ladders. Come on, those are do
you know how cool? Oh, they're fantastic. But it's like,
you know, there are one plays like holding one in
the golf tournament. It's awesome. You know how often the
guy that gets the hole in one on Thursday wins
the tournament almost never.

Speaker 7 (29:18):
Come on the hole on ones. You can't duplicate that.
They duplicated the hooking ladder all throughout the season. Teams
can't stop it. They're running in a midfield third and
twelve hooking.

Speaker 8 (29:26):
Ladder for a touchdown.

Speaker 1 (29:27):
That's the stuff. What you can't duplicate is Detroit's offensive roster.
You can't duplicate that.

Speaker 8 (29:35):
It's difficult.

Speaker 1 (29:36):
They got like six guys that may get Hall of
Fame boats, six center, left, right, tackle golf will I mean,
excuse me, what Jared Goff's gonna get Hall of Fame
boats if they go to the super Bowl. He's in
the second super Bowl. Go look at Jared Goff's numbers.
I think you'd be shocked how good they are. Jared
gopps in is there.

Speaker 8 (29:58):
I have not given an announce of Thus.

Speaker 1 (29:59):
Jared is in his prime. He's gonna stay behind this
old line for four more years. You go, you go
look at Jared Goff's numbers.

Speaker 8 (30:08):
So wait, Eli Manning, let me just go back, because.

Speaker 1 (30:10):
Hey, Dan Fouts no super Bowls in the Hall of Fame.
Jared Goff' putting up Dan oh numbers.

Speaker 8 (30:14):
So Eli Manning two super bowls? Is he gonna be yes?

Speaker 1 (30:17):
Absolutely, Okay, I'm just saying you start looking at Jared
Goff's numbers to taking two teams to a super Bowl.
If he gets there, you have Russell.

Speaker 8 (30:24):
Wilson Hall of Fame. No, how many super Bowls he's been.

Speaker 1 (30:27):
To two, it's not all super Bowls. It's not all super.

Speaker 8 (30:30):
Bowl Wilson has good numbers. Come on, I did every year.

Speaker 1 (30:34):
I just say, you asked me would put him in
the Super Bowl and I said, no, Hall of Fame
or Hall of Fame. I said no. And I'm not
saying that what Jared Goff. I'm just saying he's got
four more because he's got a run around get hurt
guy and the old line he never gets touched. He's
gonna put up. He is gonna put up for the
next four years. Jared Goff's gonna put up silly numbers.

Speaker 8 (30:55):
Will Yeah.

Speaker 7 (30:56):
See, this is what's so fun about working with you.
Sometimes we just said something.

Speaker 8 (30:59):
So crazy my mind. I was like, caught off guard.

Speaker 2 (31:02):
You think it's crazy.

Speaker 8 (31:03):
Now, I'm like, you.

Speaker 1 (31:03):
Know, there's maybe you don't think Jared God's gonna get
Hall of Fame votes.

Speaker 7 (31:09):
I mean, everybody go Ken O'Brien's got some Hall of
Fame votes.

Speaker 1 (31:13):
Well, and Ken ol brian had a good year.

Speaker 8 (31:15):
He had a good right in the Jets.

Speaker 1 (31:17):
Jmack with the news, Well that's the news, and thanks
for stopping by the Herd Live. A lot of times,
we all, I'm guilty of this. We have like confirmation
bias is yeah, I think this guy's great, and so
anytime he's good, I'm like, I go crazy. Or we
have recency bias. Oh that happened yesterday, it must be true.

(31:39):
But you can't argue with data. And we got a
couple of things here. They're gonna make a lot of
people uncomfortable. Live in LA. It's the Herd.

Speaker 2 (31:52):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noone Eastern not am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Going on in the world.

Speaker 11 (32:19):

behind the stories in the world of sports and pop culture,

time to discuss. And the fact that we've been friends

mean that says something right, So check us out. We

Speaker 7 (33:00):
You can help families impacted by the California wildfires. Visit
go dot, Fox, backslash, Red Cross or scan the QR
code on your screen to support these efforts. Your donation
enables the Red Cross to respond to and help people
recover from this disaster. Fox has already donated over a

(33:21):
million dollars, and please donate if you can do.

Speaker 1 (33:25):
Absolutely devastating. The pictures coming out are horrifying. The winds
have calmed down, hopefully that helps. You had a once
in a generation storm, planes unable because of the winds
to help drop water on the fires. It lasted two
days and entire neighborhoods and areas have been destroyed. It'll

(33:46):
be decades to get it turned around. And just gutting
to watch the images we've all got here at the company,
friends who have been affected. So please give to the
Red Cross. I will immediately after the show, and I
help you do as well. So there's a story out
there today Ian Rappaport saying among others that it looks
like Mike McCarthy will stay with the Cowboys. And this
has been my take is that Mike is not a hip, young,

(34:09):
offensive guy, nor is he a big, prominent alpha, and
those are the kind of two coaching groups we all love.
But I thought we'd played blind resume today with Mike
McCarthy to give you some sense of how accomplished he is.
And I said earlier this week, he's one with legends
Brett Favre. He's one with higher maintenance quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers.
He's one with highly compensated good, not great, Dak, and

(34:31):
he's one with backups Cooper Rush. He's a darn good
football coach. So let's play blind resume. We'll put Mike
McCarthy up on the last. All taid to talk this
through for our radio audience. So on the left is
Mike McCarthy with eight division titles, eleven playoff wins, and
a super Bowl. On the right, we don't know who
this is yet. He has fewer division titles, far fewer

(34:52):
playoff wins, and similarly, one super Bowl title. Who is
that coach? I am guessing? Here we go, Mike Tomlin,
Mike Tomlin, there you go, all right, the next one.
Mike McCarthy has a sixty one percent winning percentage, eight
division titles and eleven playoff wins. He is slightly ahead

(35:13):
of the coach on the right, both tied with eleven
playoff wins, so he would be viewed as the slightly
more successful coach. Who is that coach? Bill Parcells to me,
one of the three to four best coaches in the
history of the sport, Bill Parcells, Let's put up Mike

(35:34):
McCarthy's career winning percentage, division titles, playoff wins, and super
Bowl titles, all superior, all somewhat I mean, division titles,
almost three times as many to Kyle Shanahan. Now look
at j Mack rolling his eyes win seeing it the
suggestion that boy genius is not as accomplished as Mike McCarthy.

(36:00):
Now let's go to the next. Okay, So this one
is fascinating. So they're both won sixty one percent of
their games, Mike Scott twice as many division titles, Mike Scott,
significantly more playoff wins, and they both have a super
Bowl title. Let's see who that is Sean McVay. Now,

(36:21):
in fairness, McVeigh is much younger, but again it looks
like McVeigh is heading down the Mike McCarthy track. Okay,
so I'm just asking you, I've got two more jmck
is any of this getting a little uncomfortable?

Speaker 8 (36:36):
Okay?

Speaker 1 (36:37):
So facts over feelings, this is data over delusion. I
am here as America's honesty broker, just delivering the man.

Speaker 8 (36:47):
Sure, sir, of course.

Speaker 1 (36:48):
Okay, let's do a couple more. Okay, Now this one's interesting.
This is a big boy coach. So this coach has
a slightly better winning percentage, one more playoff win. These
are whoever this coach is opposite of McCarthy is an
all time legend?

Speaker 6 (37:08):
Who is it?

Speaker 1 (37:10):
John Harbaugh? Gmac feels as though he's getting humbled on
national television. Okay, so just just very interesting. Now I'm
giving you young coaches, I'm giving you legends. I'm giving you,
I mean, Mike Tomlin. When you suggest he should be
let go, it's outrageous. Everybody wants to bum rush McCarthy

(37:33):
out of Dallas. Let's do it again. So again, this
is a highly accomplished coach. Division titles, almost the same,
playoff wins, almost the same McCarthy for our radio audience,
has a slight edge in everything but winning percentage. This
coach is Sean Payton. Anything you'd like to add to

(37:59):
this discussion.

Speaker 8 (38:01):
You want some context or not really context?

Speaker 1 (38:04):
Okay, let me throw you a little context.

Speaker 7 (38:06):
Who do McCarthy have as his quarterback for most of
that playoff run in in Green Bay?

Speaker 8 (38:10):
It's one of the five greatest quarterbacks in the history
of the sport? Is that accurate?

Speaker 1 (38:13):
We're safe to say, did Sean Payton have a ham
and egger?

Speaker 4 (38:16):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (38:17):
He had a ham and egger and bo Nick's uh uh?

Speaker 7 (38:20):
Before that Russell Wilson disaster, Drew Brees was on his
second team at the time.

Speaker 1 (38:25):
Like what you got Dak Prescott and Canton? Did I
miss something?

Speaker 7 (38:29):
I mean, he's the highest paid quarterback in the in
the in this history.

Speaker 1 (38:33):
Of football, like the highest paid.

Speaker 8 (38:34):
Yeah, you're acting.

Speaker 7 (38:36):
I mean McCarthy gets handed Aaron Rodgers and then he
goes to the Cowboys, who were.

Speaker 1 (38:41):
Let's talk about then he has handed a quarterback that
is the highest paid in the sport, despite the fact
that he's kind of a B to B blust quarterback,
limiting the talent around him. So winning record with Cooper
Rush by the way, that's right. He got Old Rigid,
he didn't get bretton his prime, and then he got

(39:02):
Aaron who wasn't his prime. But I think it's reasonable
to say, is Aaron's not the easiest guy in the
league to coach.

Speaker 4 (39:10):
That's fair.

Speaker 7 (39:10):
But you know, these these blind resumes, really they irk
me to no end because it's basically counting stats. Oh
look at those numbers, and then you start to provide
context and you look at McCarthy's playoff failures.

Speaker 8 (39:22):
I mean, how many meltdowns have they had in the postseason?

Speaker 1 (39:25):
Colin there's I mean almost.

Speaker 7 (39:26):
Every year in the playoffs, McCarthy is a failure to
unit a disaster.

Speaker 1 (39:30):
There's only one coach in league history that has won
big Super Bowls regardless of quarterback Joe Gibbs. That's it.

Speaker 7 (39:40):
Well, Bill Parcells won with Phil Simms and Jeff Hostetler.

Speaker 8 (39:43):
Come on, those guys. That's fair.

Speaker 1 (39:45):
That's fair. Parcells, Okay, Parcels and Joe Gibbs, that's fair.

Speaker 8 (39:48):
I mean, I'm sure there's others.

Speaker 1 (39:49):
That's And by the way, Joe Gibbs is a top
five coach. Ever, I think Parcells is top three. So
I'm saying so now, all I'm saying about Mike McCarthy.
We love to kinds of coaches, the cool, young hipsters,
the Sean mcvace, I love him too, And we love
the progressive, innovative, offensive guys. Or we love the alphas.

(40:10):
Tomlin Vrabel hardbought Mike's neither. So some of what hurts
Mike is aesthetics. He's not young and cool, and he
doesn't He's not an alpha. He and I said this
for years in Green Bay. He looked like a Milwaukee
cop and Aaron was this la hipster, and I always

(40:32):
said it was such a weird relationship. I also said
that Sean Payton and Russell Wilson, I know both a
little would not work. Russell tends to be the ultimate optimist,
great conviction for things. Oh, it's always a sunny day.
And Sean can be kind of harsh, blunt, and it's
sometimes a little skeptical. And I said, forget the style,

(40:54):
forget stylistically, that won't work you just like Aaron Rodgers
and McCarthy should both actually take credit. They don't really
match up personality wise, but both of them, both Aaron
and Mike made it work for a long time and
both even Aaron deserves credit. They eventually rubbed each other
the wrong way. But Mike gets dinged because he didn't

(41:16):
like he didn't quite have the right marketing behind him.

Speaker 7 (41:19):
Yeah, when he takes to the podium, he's not got
like funny moments. There's he's just kind of blase, right,
he indistinguishable, you know much?

Speaker 2 (41:28):
Right?

Speaker 1 (41:28):
Good word, He's just nothing.

Speaker 8 (41:29):
That stands out now. Is he a good coach? Yes?
I actually think he should say no.

Speaker 1 (41:33):
To the cowboy. Let me ask you take another job,
Let me ask you this to put you in the
spotlight better coach, Mike McCarthy or Sean McDermott. Things getting
a little uncomfortable in the studio.

Speaker 8 (41:48):
Comfortable. I just need to give it some thought.

Speaker 7 (41:50):
Uh, I think mc McCarthy's probably had more success, right
if you both the rest.

Speaker 1 (41:56):
That's not arguable. We didn't even do the blind resume
with McDermott.

Speaker 8 (41:59):
He does, he does a sack.

Speaker 1 (42:00):
Okay, who's the better coach? Because I think McDermott. McDermott's
very respected, and again I think Sean's excellent. But nobody's
trying to bum rush him out of town every fifteen minutes.
I mean, McCarthy is dealing with the most medaling owner,
a quarterback that is a B being paid like an A.

Speaker 8 (42:19):
Plus and he was like runner up to MVP life.

Speaker 1 (42:24):
I've had a couple of in the last several years,
a couple of bad drafts in a division, in a
division with the most aggressive, deepest roster Philadelphia.

Speaker 7 (42:33):
Listen, McCarthy. I'm not trying to run him out of Dallas.
I think he's he shouldn't deal with Jerry in this nonsense.
I would love to see him in Chicago, but I
don't know.

Speaker 1 (42:41):
That I would hire Mike McCarthy in Chicago Mike Tomlin,
Pete Carroll. But when I say that, people agree on
the Tomlin, Pete Carroll, but they're like McCarthy. If you
said it, and I've said this. I would hire Mike
Tomlin in Chicago, Pete Carroll in Chicago, and Mike McCarthy,
but one of those three everybody'd be like, I don't know.
I'm just saying he's got a marketing issue, not a

(43:02):
coaching issue. That's fair our three. It's just getting fun.
