Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Welcome back our number
two on The Herd. Jason McIntyre in for Colin Cowherd. Yes,
I'm in relief. I had to go to the bullpen
early in this one. Folks, Cowherd under the weather. Hopefully
back tomorrow, definitely back Thursday for the super Bowl. Huge,
(00:43):
huge sports weekend just happened, and obviously the Super Bowl
the crown jewel on the sports calendar. That is Sunday.
We're gonna have Matt Hasselback on to talk about the game.
I'm gonna pepper up with Miles Garrett questions. No, my
Jets are not gonna get involved in Miles Garrett. But
I'm sure he has some good teams. Obviously, I'm I'm
interested in the super Bowl week prep. You know, you
(01:05):
get two weeks, which is abnormal. What's that like? You know,
how many people are hitting you up for tickets? Good
luck techs, high school exes hitting you up. I'm sure
Hasselbeck has all the good stuff. So we'll talk to
him shortly, but we're gonna go back to Luka Doncic
to the Lakers just momentarily, because I need to do
another victory lap, folks. I am like just the biggest
Luka Doncics fan. And I remember going, you know, back
(01:28):
pre COVID, the Lakers would let the media get press
passes and go to the games, and you sometimes you
get crappy seats, but I would go like two hours
before the game and watch shoot around and you could
do that on the floor, So I would literally get
to the arena when the players are just so I
could go to the court. And I went specifically to
watch Luca. And I'm just telling you, this guy at
(01:49):
his size, he's like six eight two forty two fifty.
He's like an NFL player. He's like the size of
a linebacker or a defensive end. And he comes out
and he's doing these moves and he makes it look
so fless. And I'm not gonna lie you guys know,
all the huge basketball nerd I play in three men's
leagues because I'm an idiot and I just fell in
love with Luka Doncics his game. He makes it look
(02:10):
so easy and he makes everyone better. And there really
is only two guys in the league who can do
literally everything make everyone better. I know Jokic is there,
but as the big guy, he doesn't have the ball
in his hands all the time. Everything revolves around him
in Denver. But essentially Luca is Lebron part two. That's
(02:30):
what he is. You watch he carried that MAVs team
to the finals last year. Remember at the trade deadline,
Dallas was like a middling team, middle of the pack,
and Luca just put him on his back and took
over and took down mighty okc and took down the
Timberwolves who had beaten Denver, and they got to the finals.
And I know they got smoked by Boston. But anybody
(02:51):
you here taking shots at Luka donci just has no
clue what they're talking about. You look at the numbers,
and what he's accomplished in his first six years in
the league is unfathomable. And I know Rachel Nichols earlier
just said, hey, wee beg Yamin's going to be a
top ten player. I don't think anybody would disagree. But
if you just look at the numbers, Luka Doncics is
on track to be a top ten player all time period.
(03:13):
That's what he's done in the first five years of
his career for six Sorry, and now he goes to
the Lakers and yeah, the pizzas aren't quite there, but
you figure it out. Right, Hey, we got our superstar,
We've got our foundational piece. Now we build around him.
You know, keeping Austin Reeves pretty savvy move by Rob Polinka.
They gave up Max Christy, who, by the way, Max
Christy hadn't looked very good with the Lakers since he
(03:36):
got inserted into the starting lineup. They were fifteen to eight.
But you keep Austin Reeves and you keep that of
the first pick, so you now have more ammo to
go out and make another move.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
You know.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
A guy I feel kind of sorry for is Klay Thompson.
You know, Clay goes to a team that just went
to the finals. Hey, I'm playing with Luca and Kyrie,
and now it's like Luca's out the door. And I
know this went down Saturday night, but guys, did you
see what happened to Dallas yesterday in their game? They
were down like fifty in the first half. I think
they give up ninety one or ninety three to the Calves.
(04:08):
That's how shell shock this franchise is. And you know,
I write about stuff on gambling for Fox sports dot
com and they asked me for an NBA take last week,
and I looked at the landscape and I said, we
don't know when Lively's coming back, maybe not this regular season,
and Luca, we don't know when he's coming back. You
should consider betting on the MAVs to miss the playoffs.
(04:30):
And we posted it, and of course I get the
usual suspects, these meatballs, Oh, you're an idiot, the MAVs
are going to the finals. I'm like, okay, let's just wait.
And now you look at him and you're like, whoa
geez if something happens to Kyrie Irving for two weeks
and the ad fit is a little clunky, No, Lively,
there's a world where the MAVs missed the playoffs entirely.
And I know, Charles Barkley, I didn't want to say
(04:52):
this when Rachel was here because she's close with Barkley.
Charles Barkley comes out on social media yesterday the MAVs
are the second best team in the world. US Like,
come on, Charles, listen. I don't need to take unnecessary
shots at you super Bowl week, but they're not the
second best team in the West, and in fact, they
could miss the playoffs. That's how bleak it could be.
Kyrie Irving is really their only shot. Creator doesn't look good.
(05:14):
If you're the Lakers, you don't care much as much
about this year because you got Luca long term. All right,
let's welcome in Matt Hasselbeck, the longtime NFL quarterback, just
a true legend in the industry. Titan when it comes
to sports media, how are you, man?
Speaker 4 (05:30):
What's up?
Speaker 5 (05:31):
Man?
Speaker 2 (05:32):
What do we think? I don't think.
Speaker 6 (05:36):
I thought we were going to get a Michael Jordan
Flue game today here from college.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
Yeah, but he wasn't.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Feeling he gave it a run. So it's super Bowl
week weeks to two weeks. Yes, So take us back
to when you went to the Super Bowl two thousand
and five against the steel Yeah.
Speaker 6 (05:55):
Its two thousand and five season two thousand and six.
You know, once you know the new year comes and
it's it's very different, you know. I felt very fortunate.
I think my teammates did too. Our head coach was
Mike Holmgren. Mike Holmgren had been with the San Francisco
forty nine ers in their heyday with Bill Walsh and
you know, Joe Montana and Ronnie Lott and Steve Young
and all those guys. And he had also been to
all those Super Bowls with with Brett Farv and Reggie
(06:18):
White and those guys at the Green Bay Packers. So
he had a template like he had. There was no like, hm,
what should we do here? He like, we got to this.
We win the NFC championship game, we beat Carolina, and
then immediately after the game, it was.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
Like, the schedules will be in your locker.
Speaker 6 (06:32):
We'll have a meeting tomorrow, the schedules will be in
your locker right away, like they knew, like they had
they had it down. And I think for us as players,
there was just a lot of comfort in that. It
was like, you know what, there's a lot to worry
about in the situation. Parents, you know, family, tickets, travel,
like all the stuff. Get the actual game right, and
it was just like this idea of like coaches got it,
(06:53):
like we're good, the organization's got it, They're going to
be first class on all this stuff. And for both
these teams, like I think that is something they've both
recently been in the Super Bowl. Obviously, Andy Reid and
these guys like they probably don't even have to look
up the schedule and what they do can he could
probably commit it from memory. So uh, I think for us,
you know, the two weeks was a thing as well,
(07:14):
And the biggest thing that I would say about that,
like you saw you saw even recently with Sean McVay
uh talk about he had two weeks to prepare for this,
uh for the Patriots in that first Super Bowl, how
he kind of felt like he overcooked it and he
was much better the second time around. That was one
thing that I certainly felt, like, you know, Mike Holngrin
did a great job in our in our in our
(07:35):
Super Bowl game planning. He was very strict with the coaches,
like in that second week, because you put the game
plan in the first week.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
If you want to put a new.
Speaker 6 (07:43):
Play in, fine, but something's got to come out, you know,
you get whatever the number was two hundred and eighty
two plays for the game plan, but it's not two
eighty three, you know, And so like I think there
is there is a there is something to this two
weeks of preparation and where you're sort of sharpening the
acts and not necessarily just swinging harder. You know, you're
(08:04):
not overtrying. And so you know this is maybe a
wash because these two teams have been there before.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
They have but one instrumental player, Sequon Barkley, this is
his first go round. And I just wonder for a
running back again, you were a quarterback, but I'm just curious,
is he going to be overamped? Give in Oh my
gosh sake. One you come to the Eagles, They're going
right back to the Super Bowl.
Speaker 6 (08:27):
Overamped is a good thing for a running back if
it's on game day. Overamped during the week. You know,
that's where you can feel exhausted.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
You go into the game. And I would say if
you talk.
Speaker 6 (08:37):
To most people that play in the Super Bowl, they'll
tell you I didn't know how exhausted I was from
doing media for two weeks straight, you know, talking to
people I hadn't talked to you, or just you know,
all the media availability. I mean it starts tonight and
he just kind of goes through and your creatures of
habit as an NFL player. But now I think for
the running back and you even see it with Nick
(08:58):
Sirianni and company, I think they've really coached this season.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Practice this season.
Speaker 6 (09:05):
You even see who gets healthy rest days on Wednesday
practices during the season they've had the goal has been
this super Bowl the whole time. I was pretty vocal
and critical. Even I thought they should have gone for
the rushing record. I thought they should have gone for
Eric Dickerson's record. That's a feather in the cap to
this great offensive line, this great o line coach, the scheme,
(09:25):
the wide receivers blocking the year that Saque had to
Eagles fans like, no, our running back owns that record,
and they and they had a tough decision to make,
and they said, no, you know, we're gonna We're.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Gonna sitch you.
Speaker 6 (09:36):
We're gonna let that record pass because our ultimate goal
is a Hoyst Lombardi. And you know, I would have personally,
I would have liked to have seen them to try
to do both.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
But with that being said, you.
Speaker 6 (09:47):
Know, I think that in their mind, they know not
to overdo it in practice these next two weeks.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
You mentioned the Eagles run game, and that has been
a weakness of the Chiefs defense here late in the season.
I'm trying to think of the game plan the Eagles
may employ. They're not just going to come out and
run the run, run, run, run, right, But I can't
imagine that that. You know, the Chiefs are gonna be
ready for it.
Speaker 6 (10:09):
I think a lot of times you see those big
call sheets that you know, Andy Reid has his famous it.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
You know, looks like the waffle house menu.
Speaker 6 (10:14):
You know, it's like it's a huge call sheet, and
a lot of times you'll see guys notes on there.
And like in my in my playing career, a common thing,
a common note that play callers will give to themselves,
especially someone who's creative in the passing game, is something
along the lines of make them prove that they can
stop the run, Like, make them prove it first. Let's
let let's just like assume that their gap sound like
(10:38):
when they want to bliz our protections or do swim
moves on a pass rush, make them prove that they're
going to do that. So no, I do think that's
going to be the thing. And I do think that
what we've seen in the playoffs, we've seen a ton
of home run runs really all season from Saquon And
I heard Bill Belichick talk about this and he nailed it.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
He absolutely nailed it. And basically what he.
Speaker 6 (11:01):
Was saying is like, when you say, oh, just stack
the box against the run, well that's no good because
once he gets through that first level, it's just the
angle of the safety versus Saquon that's deciding an eight
yard run to a sixty eight yard run. And that
is you really destroyed some defenses this year. So what
Belichick was saying, I completely agree. You need to have
(11:21):
layers to the defense. So stacking the box is not
it like too high with you know, like two deep safeties,
deep ish safeties, twelve yard safeties where those guys can
be sort of like the say, actual safeties to protect
home runs. That has to be part of the game
plan for Kins.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
But then isn't it just death by a one thousand
and eight yard runs.
Speaker 6 (11:42):
Sort of if you think that Kellen Moore is going
to be patient enough and boring enough to not have
to feed a hyped up aj Brown and feed DeVante
Smith and feed Dallas Goddard and make sure Jalen Hurts
feels part of the game. Like you're basically this is
an old Romeo Crenell saying, like make them go the long,
(12:03):
hard way, like they will, they will get creative. And
especially like just knowing Kellen Moore, right, like Kellen Moore's
up for a head coaching job, this is still an
audition for him.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
He doesn't have that saint's job.
Speaker 6 (12:14):
He's you know, you saw Kyle Shanahan and his Super
Bowl when he could have just been boring and run it,
but like confident in the year that he had confident
in his you know, MVP quarterback and his great receiver, Like, hey,
we can we can be balanced. We can be balanced.
That's the way they're gonna want. I think Kansas City's
gonna want them to be throwing the ball. So that'll
be interesting to see. But no, I do think and listen,
(12:36):
just even going back to Kellen Moore, knowing who he
was as a player, I remember this kid as a
high school quarterback in Prosser, Washington, throwing for like thousands
and thousands of yards, beating teams sixty three to nothing.
And his dad was his high school coach, very aggressive,
kind of air raateish vibe as a passer. And then
he goes to Boise State. You know, Heisman Trophy candidate
(12:58):
Kellen Moore. I mean, people forget this. And then he
played a couple of games games in Dallas and threw
for like four hundred and something yards and four hundred.
Speaker 4 (13:04):
And something yards.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
He's a passing game guy.
Speaker 6 (13:07):
So we think of the Eagles as a running team,
but trust me, the guy calling the plays in his
DNA what he really is, first and foremost, he wants
to throw that ball.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
By the way, should Saints fans be excited about him?
I don't mean to be negative here, but you know,
he kind of got run out of Dallas. We don't
know the circumstances, whether it was McCarthy didn't want him.
Then he goes to the Chargers and it was ugly there,
and now he goes to the Eagles and it's like,
is it Kellen Moore or is it Takwon Barkley.
Speaker 6 (13:34):
Saints got all kinds of problems right now. But I
would just say, like, when you're talking about a coordinator
who can build an offense around a special running back,
and I think that's what they did. Like Philly struggled early,
like the first month of the season, they were trying
to get an identity.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
They figured it out.
Speaker 6 (13:50):
Now the Saints have Alvin Kamara, and Alvin Kamara like
to me, he's one of the more underrated guys, Like
you can build around Alvin Kamara and somebody else. So
but uh no, this is an audition, right, this is
still an audition, and that's what this Super Bowl is
for for for a guy like that.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
All right, let's go to the Chiefs. I don't want
to say I'm a Chiefs hater. Chiefs fans don't like that.
I've been negative. Listen, they're fifteen and two this season.
But let's be real. The better team, would you agree,
is the Eagles. Here team everybody, not just quarterback coach. Yeah,
no doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
I mean they're like they're the I've been on the
Eagles all year.
Speaker 6 (14:22):
Yeah, I love the Eagles. I think the Eagles are strong.
There's every reason in the world to love them. Their
their talent level is high, their defense is amazing. Got
a ton of respect for Vic Fangio, played against him
a bunch. He's a headache, you know, to deal with
their d line's great, the you know, the the weapons.
They don't spread it around too much. They got a
j Brown, Davante Dallas, Goddard, say Kwon, Jalen Hurts, great leader. No,
(14:44):
there's there's all this stuff, but they're they it's like Superman.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Yeah, with Mahome, that's what is.
Speaker 6 (14:49):
And Andy Reid and there's and you know, for all
the turnover in the NFL, there's been so much continuity
in Kansas City, and I like, you know a lot
of people like they don't get six, they fire a coach,
they make a change, they do the like like learn
that lesson from Kansas City. Those guys know each other,
Like I know, Matt and Aggie went away for a
little bit and the enemy left, but like really it's.
Speaker 4 (15:10):
Been the same coaching staff for a long time.
Speaker 6 (15:13):
Yeah, So you know again, like I think, like you
just talk about the uniqueness of generational talent with Patrick Mahomes,
he's got his guy in Travis Kelcey. And then they
do have one of the more automatic kickers in the game.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
They're always in it. So that'll be a tough one
to go against, no.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Doubt, And you didn't even mention Spags, really, who is unbelievable,
Like he seems to at every crucial moment, whether it's
against the Niners in overtime, whether it's against the Bills
on that fourth down, he seems to know what button
to push.
Speaker 6 (15:45):
So we used to call those retirement blitzes like no, literally,
that's what, like you really shouldn't do that, like you
should be playing this conservative and as a quarterback. Our
coaches we'd always say, hey, this guy's resume is so strong,
like if he never coached another game and he like
buys a fishing boat and that's it for him, Like
he's good. You can't trust this guy. He might bring
(16:07):
a corner blitz on fourth and eight to win the game.
He's not afraid of anything. He'll dial up a retirement
blitz whenever he wants to. And it's much harder to
go as a quarterback. It's much harder to go up
against a guy that like, well that doesn't make sense
in this situation, but.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
He doesn't care.
Speaker 6 (16:24):
He's got his Super Bowl rings as a defensive coordinator,
he's good.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
I just keep coming back to this whole Mahomes versus
Brady stuff. I don't listen. He's a teammate here Brady
obviously at Fox, but he's the goat to me. And
even if Mahomes wins three in a row, I can't
vault him over Brady yet, can you listen?
Speaker 6 (16:42):
And when I was growing up, it was always Joe Montana, like,
Joe Montana is the guy, and no one's gonna be
Joe Montana.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
What he did in Super Bowls it was.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
Just ridiculous, rights, like no one's ever gonna get there.
And that was the talk, you know.
Speaker 6 (16:52):
And there were heroes of mine when I was growing
Michael Jordan, Walter Payton, like these guys that he was
just like, oh, no one's at that level.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
And what did Brady do? Destroyed it?
Speaker 6 (17:00):
Like just just unbelievable, put himself in rare air another place.
And I remember I was on TV, I was in
the media when Mahomes won his first one, and you know,
all these producers they want to say, Oh, can Mahomes
get to the Tom Brady level? Can you get those
playoff wins? Can he win that many Super Bowls? And
I remember a lot of like people, you know, I
(17:21):
think maybe even Steve Young at the time was like, hey,
just chill out like this. They enjoy his first one,
but then you sit and really evaluate the whole thing
and you're like, man, if anyone could do it, like
this guy could do it. And at that time, it
just felt like how I felt like growing up about
Joe Montana, no one's gonna get there, and then Brady, like,
no one's gonna get there, and here's this guy. You
(17:41):
look at how old Patrick Mahomes is, how quarterbacks can
play later into their career. Now they protect the quarterback
in terms of hits and stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
He could definitely get there. So it's almost Lebron versus
Jordan Ish And you know, Lebron's not going to catch
him in rings, but he has everything else. Mahomes, He's
probably not gonna have as many rings as Brady. Come on,
we would agree with that, right, yeah, probably, yeah, probably probably.
Speaker 6 (18:03):
But I'm just saying, like when I was playing, like
it wasn't even fathomable that someone could even get close.
You'd be like, come, that's ridiculous, Like, no one's getting there.
It's kind of like like cal Ripkins Street, you know,
like or Brett Favre Street, like of like, you know,
consecutive games, like, well, no one's getting there, but you know,
once upon a time or once a generation, like someone
(18:23):
comes along and like they they make a run at it,
and there's no doubt who that guy is.
Speaker 4 (18:28):
It's Mahomes. And I would even say, like, you know.
Speaker 6 (18:30):
Andy Reid and some of these coaches, like they're they're
coaching and like, hey, people want to talk to Andy Reid,
like hey, when are you going to retire? He is
never going to retire if fifteen's his quarterback, Like who
would do that?
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Nobody? Two more so, you played for Pete Carroll. Obviously
he now has the Raiders job. I'm sure you saw
the news over the weekend. Chip Kelly is headed to
the Raiders. That's that's a major steal. I think it's
a great hire.
Speaker 4 (18:54):
It's huge. Make sure, yeah, I mean I love Pete Carroll.
Speaker 6 (18:57):
You know, Colin talks a lot about like if you're
hiring a coach, would you hire an ex'es and O's
guy or would you hire a kind of a culture builder?
And one of the best culture builders in the history
of the game is Pete Carroll. Like he did it
at USC, did it in Seattle, he learned from his
sort of early mistakes with the Jets and the Patriots
and became an amazing culture builder. And you know, he's
(19:18):
got a ton of respect, and as do I for
Chip Kelly. You know, Chip Kelly was the head coach
here at UCLA. My son committed to play for chip Kelly.
Got a tremendous amount of respect. Chip Kelly basically gave
a big middle finger to the college football you know,
nil transfer portal, like just screw up that, you know,
the NCAA and his opinion has had and said, I'm
(19:38):
getting out of here, like I don't want to I
don't want any part of this. I just want to
coach football. I don't want to deal with all the
other stuff. I want to get to the NFL. He
didn't have a window. Bill O'Brien leaves Ohio State late
to become the head coach at Boston College, and what happens.
Chip Kelly gets to go just install his offense, call
plays and they win the national championship for Ryan Day.
(19:58):
And I think football people understand, they have a ton
of respect for you know, yes, the tempo and the
passing game and all that stuff that he was at Oregon,
but He is a like kind of an.
Speaker 4 (20:09):
Old school pull of guard, pull a tackle.
Speaker 6 (20:12):
We're running trap misdirection and you know if you're gonna
build it from the ground up. Foundationally with the run game,
Pete Carroll clearly feels like he's the guy, and I
think other people would agree.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
Obviously, they don't have a quarterback, in no disrespect to
aide O'Connell perdue guy. But I'm curious, do you think
Sam Darnold would fit. Do you think maybe they make
a play for Kirk Cousins assuming the Falcons want to
move off, Like, what do you think Pete and Chip
would want at quarterba?
Speaker 4 (20:38):
I think with Pete.
Speaker 6 (20:39):
Now obviously Tom Brady's involved as well, yes, you know,
but like from my experiences with Pete, I think Pete
wants to kill a mosquito with a sledgehammer. At certain positions,
quarterback has to be won. Go back to what he
did when he got.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
To Russell Wilson.
Speaker 6 (20:52):
Right, he had paid Tavars Jackson a ton of money,
They signed went out and find Matt Flint to like
the largest free agent contract of any that year, and
then they drafted a third rounder in Russell Wilson. I
don't think Pete cared which one of those guys was
gonna become his starter.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
I don't think he cared.
Speaker 4 (21:08):
He wanted. He loves this word.
Speaker 6 (21:10):
Compete, compete, compete, compete in everything we do. And let's see,
like who rises to the top in this kind of
a situation. And so, like I do believe in this
in a you know, the money has to be a factor, right,
But like, I would not be surprised if he does
the same thing, kills a mosquito with a sledgehammer. Free
agency drafts a guy, maybe someone that he already knows
(21:33):
from his past, like all of it. But again, he's
also not a guy that believes it needs.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
To be built just around the quarterback. He built that
legion a boom before he went and.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Got his QB.
Speaker 4 (21:45):
So really, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
If they have enough pieces and the division to compete. Like,
there's still probably a couple of years away. I mean,
Bronco's probably pulled back a little.
Speaker 6 (21:53):
Listen, there's there are people who know Pete. They're gonna
want to coach for Pete, They're gonna want to play
for Pete. And there's something about that Raiders brand.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
It matters.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
But didn't. Didn't They say the same about Antonio Pierce. Remember,
like Max Crosby and then we're going to Devonte Adaths.
We must keep him.
Speaker 6 (22:08):
You got to have the support. You got to have
the support to go and invest in the quarterback position.
I don't think that that's something that the Las Vegas
Raiders ever did. If you don't have the quarterback, it's
hard to be successful. And it felt like they were
always pushing that you kind of kicking that can down
the road. But no, I listen, you know how I
feel about Chip. I think I've made that clear. But yeah,
in terms of Pete Carroll coming in day one culture building,
(22:30):
it's gonna be, hey, here's our goal. We're going to
maximize the ability that we have. And maybe it's not
year one that they're able to do some damage, but
they're going to build a foundation for doing damage in
the future.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Do you have a Super Bowl pick or do you
want to hold off on that?
Speaker 3 (22:42):
Ye?
Speaker 6 (22:42):
I mean I prefer to hold off, But I would
just say, like everything, as you study it, everything that matters.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
Points to the Eagles.
Speaker 7 (22:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (22:50):
Everything great defense, you run the ball, you have great
you know weapons outside, You've got a quarterback who's steady'd
been there, done it. Aside from one fumble, he'd have
a super Bowl ring of his own. But like, just
look at kind of like through the years of what Brady,
there's an X factor that the Chiefs have, and so
I think it would be really, really hard to go
(23:11):
against the Chiefs even though everything in your brain is
telling you Philly.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
Should be that team. Yeah, we'll see. I will say this, though.
Speaker 2 (23:17):
It sounds like a Chiefs pick of America.
Speaker 6 (23:19):
I would say, I would say, but listen, the story
of all the playoffs has been what turnover, specifically fumbles
and the it's not a round ball special teams, great
players not having a great day.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
It happens.
Speaker 6 (23:33):
One of the things I learned from Pete Carroll, and
this is a Kobe Bryant thing. You can absolutely try
too hard.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
In a big moment, in a big game.
Speaker 6 (23:43):
And it doesn't make sense at first, but like, if
you try too hard, you can actually play worse. And
that's why Pete one of his culture things is like
I don't care what it is. I don't care if
it's rock paper scissors for per diem, I'm this is
everything we do as a competition and a championship mindset.
Speaker 4 (23:58):
So when you get in that big game, this is
just what we do.
Speaker 6 (24:01):
And that's how I feel about Patrick Mahomes sometimes in
terms of those big moments.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
This is just what we do. Matt Hasselbeck, former three
time Pro Bowl quarterback. Great stuff, Thank you, Matt. Coming
up next here on the Herd, we'll go to Herd
Line News.
Speaker 8 (24:14):
One more heard. The Herd streams twenty four hours a day,
seven days a week within the iHeartRadio app. Search Herd
to listen live or on demand whenever you like.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
Back here on the Herd, Jason McIntyre pinch hitting for
Colin Cowherd. Good stuff from Matt Hasselbeck. We had Rachel
Nichols earlier. Will we just got word Rick Buker, NBA
analyst here at Fox Sports. I don't want to say
he's a Lebron hater, but do you have and Lebron
have had some beef over the years. Rick's going to
talk to us about the Lebron Luca union in La. Oh,
(24:45):
it's an exciting time. Let's go to Ryan Music with
the news. No, no, no, turn on the news.
Speaker 8 (24:53):
This is the Herd Line News, all right, Jay.
Speaker 9 (24:56):
Mac Obviously a lot going on in the NBA, but
we'll do the NFL. Some breaking news in the NFL,
A lot of speculation about Miles Garrett's future with the Browns.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Well.
Speaker 9 (25:06):
He put out a statement today officially requesting a trade
out of Cleveland, citing his quote desire to win and
compete on the biggest stages. Now there is a report
that despite this request, the Browns might not be looking
to move Garrett, and the Browns would have to take
thirty six million dollars in dead cat money if they
end up trading Garrett.
Speaker 10 (25:28):
How do you see this plan out as potential landing
spots for Miles Garrett.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
If I'm the Browns, I say that we're not trading him,
but of course you got to trade it me wance
out and frankly, the Browns have been pretty bad. You know,
Stefanski's a great coach, but did Deshaun Watson experiments have
been terrible. I'm trying to come up with some landing spots.
During the break we talked to I forget who it was,
hasslebeca Rachel. I think the Rams could be a player.
(25:52):
I think Washington makes a ton of sense. But you
as a Bengals fan will be thrilled when Miles Garrett
leaves a division. He's causing Joe Burrow some heartache and
some scary moments there.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
Huh, that's right.
Speaker 9 (26:05):
Yeah, getting him out of the division will certainly make
those offensive line issues seem a lot less glaring twice
a year when you have to face up against someone
like Miles Garrett.
Speaker 10 (26:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (26:15):
In terms of other teams, you know, I also wonder
we know the Lions will get Aiden Hutchinson back, but
was a significant injury. So and I also don't think
you could ever have too many pass rushers in the NFL,
especially in the NFC North. There or staying in the
NFC North, maybe a sneaky Green Bay Packers. Oh, last
time they took a big swing on a defensive player
(26:36):
like that, Reggie.
Speaker 2 (26:37):
Was Charles Okay.
Speaker 9 (26:39):
Once in a while, it's out of their nature, not
really something they do consistently, but the times they have
done it seems to pay off in more.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
We're mentioning all NFC teams because if you're the Browns,
you don't want to see Miles Garrett. Certainly not in
the division and certainly not like blocking your path to
get to a Super Bowl? Should you be there in
a couple of years? So yeah, what about like an
Arizona Cardinals. I don't know what they have going on.
I saw some people spickling in the Niners, but both
(27:11):
has always hurt. Sure, it's a tough one, but Mile
Garrett's gonna certainly command something and I don't think you
keep him. If he wants out, hey, you know we'll
trade you.
Speaker 9 (27:18):
Yeah. The AFC teams feel a little bit more complicated
to pin down because you think about, like, Okay, who
are these young up and coming kind of teams. Obviously
the Chargers had a surprising season, but they're probably gonna
try and get rid of Joey Bosa. Are they really
going to replace him? Same thing, you know, the Denver Broncos,
who had a great season and a great defense. Again,
can you have too many pass rushers?
Speaker 2 (27:39):
Know?
Speaker 9 (27:39):
But do you really need to add there or are
you looking to maybe add more pieces to build around
bow Knicks on the offensive side of the ball.
Speaker 10 (27:46):
Baltimore Ravens, obviously, I don't think. I don't think they
want to avoid the AFC. They certainly go want in division.
Speaker 9 (27:51):
So to your point, it doesn't seem like the AFC
has too many clear landing stories if they end up
going that direction. Well, this Weekends and Super on Fox,
we have Mahomes and the Chiefs looking to secure the
NFL's first three p Mahomes is prepping for his fifth
Super Bowl in the last six years, and when he
was asked if there's anything about this team that separates
(28:13):
them from the rest, here's.
Speaker 10 (28:14):
What he had to say.
Speaker 7 (28:16):
This team's specially, it's been everybody. I mean, if you
look at our entire season, it's like someone that makes
a big play at the biggest moment to go out
there and win a football game, if that's offense, defense,
or special teams. And so I think the fact that
it's been Everybody's not just offense, it's not just defense,
it's everybody on the entire team is something I'll remember
this season by and hopefully we can do it the
right way and get this final win.
Speaker 9 (28:36):
Also, don't forget to catch us live from New Orleans
Thursday and Friday at noon Eastern on FS one. Then
check out our Super Bowl special Friday for Eastern on Fox.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
Yeah, big big week. Last time the Eagles and Chiefs met,
it was Kadarius Tony You remember he had two electric plays,
including the punt return that got them into it. Who's
your guy for the Chiefs? I guess Kareem Hunt? Noah Gray?
Could he make an appearance that the number two tight end.
Speaker 9 (29:03):
I think what we know about the Chiefs is we
actually don't know who it's gonna be until the actual game,
just based off of I mean, would you be surprised
if DeAndre Hopkins has a turn back the clock game
and goes for one to ten and two touchdowns?
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (29:16):
And that's what's.
Speaker 9 (29:18):
Interesting about this Chiefs team is you have the balance
between roster and team construction versus collection of talent. By
the standard of collection of talent, they don't come anywhere
close to being maybe even one of the best teams
in the league this year is you've liked to point
out along the way, and they may or may not
have proven you wrong time and time again. But in
(29:39):
terms of team construction, the balance is unquestionable. I mean,
from what they're able to do on defense with a
lot of those young pieces around Chris Jones anchoring in
the middle of the defense there, and then on offense,
I mean, it all works because Mahomes elevates the receivers
anywhere else, it's a bottom.
Speaker 10 (30:00):
Receiving group in the league.
Speaker 9 (30:01):
In Kansas City, it's maybe their third straight Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
Yeah, I wish I had and hindsight asked Hasselback, like
about a game plan. Is there any idea during the week, Hey,
we see this on film, Hollywood Brown, get ready, you
can cook either the young kid Mitchell or or whoever
you're matched up against like this. Do they see that
during the week on film and say, hey, this is
potentially a Hollywood Brown game. I don't know.
Speaker 9 (30:26):
I mean, listen, like you, you've already seen it change
from They just gave Travis Kelce all the targets, made
him the focal of the offense, and their first game
against the Houston Texans and then against the Buffalo Bills
more of an afterthought again. Yeah, so you can read
the film or watch the film as much as you'd like.
Doesn't mean that Andy Reid and Mahomes haven't come up
(30:46):
with something different.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
I'm so sick of these guys.
Speaker 9 (30:50):
Dams well at least oh wait, no, actually they could
keep going first year. This is not a last dance
type situation, all right. The Raider, though, are in the
early stages of Pete Carroll's new regime.
Speaker 10 (31:03):
And have reportedly made a splashy higher.
Speaker 9 (31:05):
According to Adam Schefter, chip Kelly will leave Ohio State
after just one season to become the raiders new offensive coordinator,
and according to Albert Breer, chip Kelly is now going
to be the highest paid coordinator in the league at
six million per year, doubling the previous highest paid coordinator.
Speaker 10 (31:21):
Excuse me and Todd Monkin, who was at three million.
Do you like this?
Speaker 9 (31:25):
Hihow?
Speaker 2 (31:26):
I like this a lot. Remember I was speculating, could
Ryan Day and Chip Kelly be a package somewhere and
not chip Kelly goes to the Raiders. I mean, listen,
he was great at Ohio State. They were an awesome
watch in the playoff. Just don't watch a Michigan tape.
We do have some Raiders fans on the staff here.
I haven't asked them how geek they are. But Ryan,
I mean, chip Kelly, proven winner, Pete Carroll, proven winner.
(31:48):
Oh yeah, like they could make some noise. It could
be interesting this year.
Speaker 10 (31:52):
Oh certainly.
Speaker 9 (31:53):
I mean, look, when you from Vegas's perspective, to go
from Pete Carroll, chip Kelly and then we'll see a
lot of moss have them getting Shador Sanders falling a
bit in the draft. I mean those three moves. That's
a win of an offseason, no doubt about it. Now, again,
the division is just an absolute juggernaut. So it's hard
(32:15):
to say that they're somehow going to go from the
four or five win team to you know, ten plus.
But Colin Nuke with the Broncos that they were a
team that could quickly go from not close to contending
to a playoff spot. So if you feel good about
Shador Sanders as an NFL prospect, and then you have
(32:37):
great coordinator on the offense to help develop him, and
then we know Pete Carroll can set the culture, wouldn't
be totally out of the question.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
Yeah, it's interesting. Ohio State has two good backs Henderson
and Judkins, who are coming to the draft. The Raiders
run game situation when they lost Josh Jacobs, it was
bleak loft. They were starting like a Mira Abdullah I
would almost guarantee in round two or they're gonna grab
one of the Oahos date guys, they almost have to.
They need a run game, they need a quarterback. I
(33:06):
don't know. I know Colin's calling. He shot with the
Patriots next year. I can't get there with the Raiders,
but I definitely like the foundation that they've got.
Speaker 10 (33:13):
Definitely heading in the right direction. Will you wrap up
with this?
Speaker 9 (33:16):
We were talking about the Raiders there, and after Pete
Carroll was brought into Vegas, rumors were circulating that there
could be a reunion between Pete and Russell Wilson, who's
a pending free agent, but he sidestepped questions about the
Raiders at the Pro Bowl, saying I'm looking forward to
hopefully being back with the Steelers and we'll see what
happens with the rest. I love it in Pittsburgh. How
(33:39):
do you feel about a potential Russ in Vegas or
where do you think Russ.
Speaker 10 (33:44):
Ends up next season.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
I guess I'll stick with Russ in Pittsburgh, but I
don't think they're going to be as good as last year. Ryan,
I just I don't see it. Some smoking mirrors early
in the season, reality set in. They struggled at the end,
bounced in the playoffs. I just can't make a case
that Russ is going to get them to ten or
eleven twelve wins. Again, almost more interesting is justin fields? Sure,
(34:09):
is he coveted, like I don't know, is he coveted
as a backup? Does he get a shot as a starter? Somewhere?
Are many chairs left to be a starter. But yeah,
I'm happy for Russ if he's happy, you know.
Speaker 10 (34:21):
Yeah, certainly.
Speaker 9 (34:21):
I mean, look, I get why for Russ he looks
at it and goes, I'm much better off in Pittsburgh.
I mean, the infrastructure of where they're at as opposed
to what is going to be considered a semi rebuild
going on in Vegas doesn't mean his chances of success.
Speaker 10 (34:36):
Are very high in the immediate future.
Speaker 9 (34:39):
And as where he's at in his career, he's not
looking for a three year rebuild. He's looking to hopefully
continue building where he's at. I just don't know if,
like you're Pittsburgh, are you really feeling great about bringing.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
Russ back at the right price?
Speaker 10 (34:58):
I mean at the right price?
Speaker 9 (35:00):
I think it was basically like the veteran's minimum. Yeah,
so the price can't go any lower. So what do
you will give twenty million year? Or is he scoffing
at that? Because he would be one of the lowest
fade quarterbacks in the league.
Speaker 10 (35:11):
Yeah, I just don't see how you go much.
Speaker 9 (35:13):
Higher than I know.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
There's like not a case for that. Now is there
a world where they would be interested in Kirk Cousins,
Although Kirk Cousins, I don't know if he's got left
in the two.
Speaker 8 (35:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (35:24):
I couldn't go there with Kirk just because you had
a good situation in Atlanta playing in a dome and
it fell off way. So if now you're going to
take him, I mean he hasn't had he played in
a doman Minnesota and then in Atlanta for that short time.
So like, I don't know if at this point in
(35:44):
his career, based off of how we saw it finish,
that all of a sudden you want him to just
go whether the elements of an AFC North Division brutal
division with.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
Those pass rushers of yeah, all right, rite music with
the news.
Speaker 8 (35:57):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by Heard
Line news.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
All right. We got Mark Sanchez in the final hour
that I talked Super Bowl week. Sanchez, he never got there,
but he got the two AFC championships. You know, he's
a Jets guy, so I'm obviously a big fan and
as I said Rick Buker at the top of the hour,
We'll be back here on the Herd after a break.
Speaker 8 (36:20):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
at noon eastern nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
Hey, Steve Covino and I'm Rich David and together we're
Covino and Rich on Fox Sports Radio. You could catch
us weekdays from five to seven pm Eastern two to
four Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and of course the
iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 10 (36:41):
Why should you listen to Covino and Rich.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
We talk about everything life, sports, relationships, what's going on
in the world. We have a lot of fun talking
about the stories behind the stories in the world of
sports and pop culture, stories that well, other shows don't
seem to have the time to discuss. And the fact
that we've been friends for the last twenty years and
still work together. I mean that says something, right.
Speaker 10 (37:00):
So check us out.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
We like to get you involved too, take your phone calls,
chop it up. As they say, I'd say the most
interactive show on Fox Sports Radio, maybe the most interactive
show on planetar. Be sure to check out Cavino and
Rich live on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app
from five to seven pm Eastern two to four Pacific,
And if you miss any of the live show, just
search Covin on Rich wherever you get your podcasts, and
of course on social media that's Covino and Rich.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
This week we are headed to New Orleans, The Herd
and the entire FS one lineup will be live from
Bourbon Street on Thursday and Friday as we get ready
for Super BOWLB fifty nine. And Friday, we have a
Super Bowl special at four eastern on Fox. Will be
joined by guests special guests all week long counting down
two the Big Game. Can't wait for it. Unlike Hasselback,
(37:48):
I will have a pick and it's gonna be the
Eagles in a teaser and stuff. But also straight up
we'll get to obviously the game later. But let's go
back real briefly too. The NBA, the Luka Doncic moved
to the Lakers. You could just tell the excitement. I mean, folks,
everybody in LA is geeked. And it is fortuitous that
(38:10):
the Lakers keep just falling backwards into the likes of
Kobe Bryant into Palgasol into Luka Doncic. It really is amazing.
And we had Rachel Nichols on earlier and she talked
about the Luca ad trade.
Speaker 5 (38:27):
What we do know is that, yes, there have been
conditioning issues with him over the years, the idea that
he might be perennially unavailable, whether he was sort of
flouting team rules, whether there was a bit of sort
of hey, we've asked you to do this and you've
refused time and time and time again, whether it's he
arguing with officials that they've asked him to tone down
and that has actually cost his team specific losses that
(38:47):
you can point to if you add all of that
stuff up over all the years, I personally would still
not trade Luka Doncic. The idea of trading a twenty
five year old who really isn't even in his prime yet,
you are a betting against the next ten years of
Luca's future. That is a heavy bet to make with
a guy who is frankly been a prodigy since he
(39:09):
was eleven years old.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
You know, I saw someone compare this. You guys have
seen the movie The Big Short. I know Coward loves
that movie. Essentially, the Dallas Mavericks are shorting Luka Doncic
right now. They're just like, hey, we're out of the
Luca business. We think it's gonna be all downhill from here.
He got to the finals once, but he just refuses
to get in shape. And again we're not in the building.
Nobody is, but we don't know how ugly it's gotten.
(39:33):
Here's my guess though, if it were really ugly, like
Luca's showing up with a twelve pack of beer or
you know, a rack of ribs trying to like pig
out in the locker room. If it were that bad,
I'm sure some players would have said something to their
agent and it would have leaked out. We haven't seen
reports of like a gluttonous Luka doncon is just being
really unhealthy and unsavory. Like, I don't know, I just
(39:57):
I don't totally get it. That being said, the Lakers
getting Luca may have just been the first Domino. What
do they have next? Rachel Nichols also chimed in on
what the Lakers could be planning next.
Speaker 5 (40:09):
I mean, they're in a great position to make another
move now, right because before it was I don't know,
do you get rid of Austin Reeves because of what
he means the team right now, well, you don't need
that anymore because you have Luka Dancic, and so I
think that they are much more flexible. They still have
a first round pick to give out. There is no
question a. They need a center presence, and they need
a defensive center because the downside of this trade that
(40:31):
the Lakers just made is that they might score two
hundred points a game, but the other team might score
two hundred and thirty. So you know, they have got
to get a strong defensive presence in the middle, and
I expect them to go out and do that because
they have assets now.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
It is interesting how the NBA trade deadline usually lines
up with Super Bowl Week. I remember being in Arizona.
I think it was two years ago. We had the
Super Bowl and I had left a party and I
was in an uber and my phone just starts buzzing
with just a torrent of texts and Kevin Durant had
been traded to the Suns, and it was like, oh
(41:08):
my gosh, Katie got Wow, that's crazy. So you guys know,
I pay attention to the NBA and NFL very closely.
And one of the things that I try my best
to do is kind of read between the lines. What
are the reporters really saying. We know, when like Schefter
and these guys put stuff out there, they're saying what
they can, but there's other stuff that they've been told
(41:28):
not to say. They're holding back. As a reporter, you
don't unload everything that you have. And one of the
things I'd been detecting in the NBA for about two
weeks now is some every a lot of teams. It
started with the Steph Curry stuff, Hey, let's keep our
powder drive for the summer. We don't know who could
become available. And I heard this from several different either
teams or reporters that I'm like, well, I looked around,
(41:51):
I'm like, who the hell are they talking about? Luca
didn't even cross my mind, and I don't think anybody
thought it was Luca. But the guy I kept coming
back to was Kevin Durant. And this is NBA trade
deadline week, it sounds like this Luca thing is going
to be a springboard. Within twenty four hours, the Spurs said,
let's go get this dearon foxdeal done. They got him, folks,
(42:13):
this Jimmy Butler. Stuff keeps getting ugly in Miami. Apparently
Miami wants nothing to do with Bradley Beal. Milwaukee wants
nothing to do with Bradley Beal in like a reroute
three team trade thing. I keep coming back to it.
I talked about on my podcast last week Kevin Durant
as potentially a big name that could be on the move.
The producers did tell me during the last commercial break, Hey,
(42:35):
there's some Kevin Durant stuff bubbling up. I'm just saying.
The NBA is wacky, wild kool Aid style. I love it.
I love all of this player movement, guys, unhappy, inner
internal suspensions, absolute chaos. That's kind of an environment I
like to think I thrive in, although I probably don't.
I just I'm excited. So Rick Buker will be here
at the top of the hour. We will chop up
(42:58):
what happened, what's next all of that. Do the Lakers
have more ammo? I want them to keep Austin Reeves,
but I would understand if he gets shipped. Our number
three coming up
