You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Welcome Back Hour two Live in La. It's The Herd
Rachel Nichols. It's going to be joining us here in
studio in a couple of minutes. I just just a
baseball note. The Yankees have a great tradition. It's been
a good run, but the franchise is pretty much over.
Garrett Cole's out for the season, so you can close
up shop. And John Carlos Stanton has cane in both elbows,

(00:51):
so it's you know, you if you watch the Dodgers
and Yankees in the World Series, the only time you
felt like the Yankees could go toe to toe is
when Garrett because Dodgers have more players, it's not close.
Was when Garrett Cole was on the mount. He's done
for the season, and I don't know if you've seen
this twenty one year old like phenom from Japan for
the Dodgers. Roki Sazaki. This this this pitcher, Holy yo

(01:15):
wow wow, unhittable splitter. That kid is something else.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
You're watching spring training.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Absolutely, I feel like I.

Speaker 4 (01:24):
Don't even know you rnesium spring training baseball.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
You're all over the place.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
First of all, when you have the greatest roster in
the history of a sport in your backyard, that's bold.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Greatest roster in the history of baseball.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Go look at the Dodgers lineup last year. The lineup
was unbelievable. Now I get this phenom. I get sho
Heyo Tani. They picked up a middle reliever and a
Tanner Scott. I think didn't they get Tanner Scott in
the bullpen? Then they adds a Blake Snell. What what's
the name of the starter pitching that they added another

(01:59):
starting pitcher. Sorry it's I haven't moved completely into baseball talk,
but their starting staffs incredible. That last year they were
relying on bullpen games against the Podrais, the Mets, and
the Yankee bullpen games. They were like, we just don't
have enough starters. Now they had two high end starters
and then Shoeyo Tani's gonna pitch and they get Tanner Scott.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
So one hundred, twenty and twenty five wins.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
I don't think they care about the regular season. I'm
just saying, if you go think about this, the Dodgers
won a World Series and they had a bullpen start
against the Mets, pod raising Yankees. I don't even know
if that's ever happened in the playoff run. And then
they added three, if you count ol Tawani, three high
end pitchers to a batting order that's the best since

(02:44):
the nineteen seventy five Reds.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
I don't know what the twenty seven Yankees. I feel
like there's still the gold standard. Now I'm putting on
my Charles Barkley had. Of course, nobody's as good as
those guys.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
I'm just I'm just telling you if they're already planning
the parade rope in Los Angeles, the mayor Dave Roberts,
they're planning the parade.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
The Lakers have the route planned, by the way.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
And they won the World Series in five games, and
that that that they won it in five games, and
that's with bullpen games, and they've added three high end
starters to a I mean, this is the only team
where platoon guys can win, like National League Divisional Series MVP,
Like it's just an insane roster. I had a buddy

(03:27):
go to a Dodger game. Buddy, an acquaintance go to
a Dodger spring training game. Ticket was one hundred and
five dollars. I mean, when you can charge more for
a spring training game than the Cincinnati Reds do for
like a down the third baseline seat, Like that's the
quality of what you have. It's it is this, this
this phenom, this young kid Sazaki's go online and in

(03:51):
between your Ayahuascar pursuits, go look at this kid's stuff.
It's incredible. Oh and here's Shrager on Aaron Rodger. We've
talked about Aaron Rodgers where Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson
apparently you know they're they're up for the Giants Steelers job.
Just not out of my mouth. Here's Shreger on Aaron's

(04:12):
decision timetable Rogers.

Speaker 5 (04:15):
We know is going somewhere, and it might not just
be a week, it might be two weeks, three weeks,
four weeks. If you think you know the answer to
where Aaron Rodgers' timetable is because I'm smoking his teeth.
That sorts on both sides, and everyone's kind of got
that shrug emoji seeing Give it a space.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Let him decide.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
Now, we don't know the numbers, we don't know what
Fin offered exactly, but we do know there's been contact
treated representatives and both of those teams.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Okay, I just it's weird you start putting corporations on hold.
I'll get back to you.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
I can.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
I've never done that, but I can. I can presume
what the answer would be. We're moving on. So uh,
that's just crazy. But but you know what, I'm not
gonna pretend I have any magical insight on this. I
don't really know, But I just know how big corporations work,
like they want to know at the most important position
what's going on. So i'd give him my heads up.

(05:10):
Remember this is what happened to Aaron in Green Bay
when he went on the aisle or the Darkness Retreat,
and he came out of the Darkness Retreat and the
packers said we're moving on, and he was a little
bit surprised. Well, dude, come on, you had all off season.
You got to give bosses especially big corporations, especially when
you're a valuable employe at a certain position. Got to

(05:31):
give him a heads up and I'll get back to
the on that. That never ends well. That never ends
well for an employee, unless you're like Lebron in his prime.
I'll get back to you. That is, you think you're
better than us. That's what it's. That's the message it's sending.
I'll get back to you. I'd be careful. It's not
you don't own the business. All right, we bring her on.

(05:52):
There's a reason good, good knows or stuff. Fox Sports
NBA analyst Rachel Nichols, covering the NBA now for thirty years,
is joining us tonight. By the way, Thunder at the Celtics, Now,
that is probably a preview of the NBA Final many
many would suggest that, yeah, it could be. My take

(06:13):
on the Thunder has been I know they're really good.
I think they're Cleveland last year. They need another year
to bake. They have a lot of good young players.
I don't trust young players on the road in the playoffs.
What should we look for tonight in this game?

Speaker 6 (06:25):
Yeah, I mean I agree with you on that front.

Speaker 7 (06:28):
I think the Thunder are probably more dangerous than people
think they are. But I do always subscribe to the
you got to get deep into the playoffs steps and lose.

Speaker 6 (06:36):
Before you can win.

Speaker 7 (06:38):
That being said, they're a great team and tonight I
think the biggest swing is going to be injury stuff.
So Jason Tatum is questionable with any thing. Milwonkeek Me
didn't play the last game. Yeah, chrisps Prezingis has been
sick with a mystery illness, which is just so crazy.
I mean, you got the best doctors in the world
treating these NBA players, especially in Boston. Yeah, and nobody

(07:00):
can figure it out. But Mozilla has said that he's
pretty close to returning. I don't know if that's going
to be tonight. And then on the other end of
the spectrum, Jalen Williams. We know he's not playing tonight
because he didn't even go on the team plane, so
he's not in there, and I think that is going
to be what makes the difference if Tatum goes, Jalen
Williams isn't there.

Speaker 6 (07:19):
I think that if Boston.

Speaker 7 (07:20):
Can hit its threes better than they did the last
time these teams matched up, because last time Boston was
I don't want to say it. Nine forty six from
deep right embarrassing certainly for that team.

Speaker 6 (07:32):
And if they can do.

Speaker 7 (07:33):
That better and double team Shay, which is something that
statistically he's a little bit that it's a little bit
of a hole in his game, little bit, And if
they can do that, then Boston should win.

Speaker 6 (07:44):
But we'll see.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Yeah, you know, it's it's if let's say you skim
the NBA. We all watch the NFL, but every other sport,
unless you're a die hard, everybody skims stuff. Yeah, and
so everybody knows like, oh, Jimmy Butler went to the
Warriors with staff, and everybody's like, oh, pretty good team.
But if you don't follow the NBA. I tend to
follow the Warriors a lot. My buddies are all Warrior fans.
I'm on the West Coast. I'm no cur So when

(08:08):
Jonathan Kaminga was healthy and he was averaging twenty a night, yes,
so they're adding a twenty point a game guy to
a team that's twelve and one since Butler arrived. I
don't know exactly his role, but I almost feel like
now the Warrior games count, I can watch them and
make something of it. Yeah.

Speaker 7 (08:29):
I mean, look, size in the West is a bigger
factor than it is in the East right now, and
teams that add size, like getting Kaminga back is going
that's going to make a big difference.

Speaker 6 (08:38):
We'll see obviously.

Speaker 7 (08:40):
But if you have Denver Nuggets team with Nikola jokicch
you want someone like Kaminga in the lineup to match
up against him and draw some vowels and things like that.
So I think it's a real key playoff thing because
when things get deep in the playoffs, that kind of
stuff is going to really matter. And it just adds
more confidence to Steph and Jimmy because you know, hey,
I got another guy who has my back, and we

(09:01):
have seen Steph's confidence and just sort of Jois de vives,
let's say, rise since the Jimmy trade, and because he
just knows he's not the only guy, he didn't have
to do everything anymore, and that they have hope and
they're playing well.

Speaker 6 (09:15):
And that's a dangerous Steph gery.

Speaker 7 (09:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
I think that whenever you run a business and you
acquire somebody, there's always unintended benefits and liabilities. Yeah, And
I don't think even Steve Kerr thought Steph was going
to get twenty eight percent better with Jimmy Butler, right,
So I was thinking about this. The advantage they have
in gray hair is this, I've seen everything three times. Sure,

(09:40):
so people forget this. You know this because you're a
bit of a historian and all this stuff. So when
Michael Jordan left the NBA.

Speaker 6 (09:48):
Which time, which time?

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Right?

Speaker 5 (09:50):
Right?

Speaker 1 (09:51):
But I mean when when he basically left the bulls. Okay,
the league lost fifty percent of a trading Yes, So
when you see this downward eight year NBA trajectory, it's
been gradual. Yes, the half America stopped watching a wildly
popular league. Yeah, and the reason being is they just
didn't have the next star. They had High Verson in

(10:12):
Marbury and the consumers were.

Speaker 6 (10:14):
Like, eh.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
So so I've seen this happen. I'm old enough to remember.
I started watching the NBA in seventy two, seventy three
with the Lakers, Wilt with the head band, Old Wilt,
Jerry Westcale Goodrich. So I remember that the league was
sort of dead. It was Nicks, Lakers and a bunch
of nonsense. And then here came Julius Irving, Here comes
Magic Bird in the eighties. So what the what's happened

(10:40):
to the league in the last month with Luca to
the Lakers and Butler to the Warriors. I don't think
anybody understands this. I just saw the Lakers Celtics rating.

Speaker 6 (10:50):
Oh my lord, high high, high, seven year.

Speaker 7 (10:53):
High, seven year high, non Christmas game, non Christmas A
little bit of a distinction, but still tremendous, obviously tremendous interest.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Do you think when you go around the league and
cover it, do you think the Lakers are surprised just
how damn big this is and the league is.

Speaker 7 (11:09):
I don't think they're surprised. I think the Lakers are
used to being the draw. I don't think there's anything
less than an expectation of being the draw, and they
have consistently, especially since Lebron's gotten there.

Speaker 6 (11:19):
Been the draw.

Speaker 7 (11:20):
But the idea that Luca is there now and that
people are just it's not just his star power, it's
that people want to see what this combo can do.

Speaker 6 (11:27):
They want to see how this team is going to
work out.

Speaker 7 (11:29):
That raises interest and then look, Laker Celtics is a huge.

Speaker 6 (11:34):
Bone in NBA rivalry.

Speaker 7 (11:37):
I mean, you talk about Magic Bird, that's how deep
this goes and I just don't think that the collective
memory of NBA fans ever forgets that. And you've got
two huge markets and a rivalry that's been going on
for forty fifty years. And that's a recipe for the
highest non Christmas Day rating in seven years, which.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
Is just listen, ESPN is bailing on baseball. I don't
get it, but they are. Fox just broke a record
this past year, sixty seven percent increase. Why big stars
in the right cities, that's just the reality of our Oh,
Tawny with the Angels, men, Tawny with the Dodgers, game
changer for the sport.

Speaker 7 (12:15):
Well, look, market size has a lot to do with
it because it's how many people are tuning into their TVs.
There are a lot more people in Los Angeles and
Boston than there are in say, Oklahoma City. So when
those teams are playing well, you have a lot more
people tuning in and that rating goes higher. It's mean,
it's obviously not rocket science, but it's fun to see
it happen.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Also, we'll just throw this out. This is projecting, but
there are two other moves that could really help the NBA.
Jannis eventually becomes a Nick that's been rumored for a year. Yes,
and Cooper flag goes to the Bulls.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
So Cooper is a great player for Duke, the biggest
domestic brand. Ye. Chicago's led the NBA and attendance for
four years with a bad product.

Speaker 6 (12:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
I'm a season ticket holder for the Bulls. It's packed
bad games. So my take is we just had the butler.
Luca moves Yannis to the Knicks potentially potentially, and Cooper
flagged the Bulls. That's the next level of everything's lined up. Okay,
I love Kevin Durant. You can drive me nuts, but

(13:16):
I love him. So he's not gonna be a Phoenix Sun.
Nobody can make a move now, But I just I
want I want you to start stirring a little bit.
Are there leaders in the clubhouse where he may not
be the one, but he's the world's best two and
takes a team to a title?

Speaker 6 (13:37):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (13:37):
I mean if I were the Knicks, by the way,
because I don't know, if you honest, it's going to
be up for trade, so I wouldn't count that chicken
until it hatches. But if I were the Knicks, I
would try like hell to get Kevin Durant. He fits
there because he just fits there so well. If I
were the Miami Heat, I would try like hell to
get Kevin Durant because they have definite trade possibilities there

(13:58):
if you look at potential trades, and obviously they have
been a mess since Jimmy Butler left. And a star
like that is someone who pat Riley knows a lot
about stars.

Speaker 6 (14:08):
Let's just say that is someone who they'd be interested in.

Speaker 7 (14:11):
And the thing about Kevin is, and we said this
when he was younger, that he was going to be
able to age in this game oh better than most, Yes,
just because of the way he plays and the kind
of shooter he is. And it's fun to have said
that ten years ago, and now with the age he's
at to see it playing out. His shooting percentages is
three point percentages. They're higher now than they were the

(14:34):
season he won MVP. I mean, he's just ageless in
this way.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
There are people whereas Westbrook was hyper athletic his game
in age as well. Yeah, Kevin Durant is. I mean
there's an argument. Now take Lebron out who doesn't make sense,
like Brady doesn't make sense. You can argue if healthy,
no player in the league's game ages better than Kevin Durant. Yeah,

(15:00):
you can go catch and shoot. If he slows down,
I'll just catch and shoot guy.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
No.

Speaker 7 (15:04):
And also, it's funny I spoke with Kevin the other
day about this, is that he's the guy who instantly
can do well on any team he goes to. There's usually,
even with the Stars, even if it's a good fit,
there's usually some adjustment period. Jimmy Butler is another guy
like that, as we've seen with the Warriors. Jimmy likes
to say I fit anywhere. Kevin Durant fits anywhere, and

(15:25):
it's just instantaneous. The first game he plays, he looks
like he's been there forever. So that also means that
teams looking to acquire him are going to get a
guy they know it is going to be good from
the Star.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
I know the other thing that Kevin never gets credit
for this. I always say this about presidents. You never
get credit for disasters you avoid, yes, all right, that
they just don't get you stay out of a recession
because of a move. Kevin never gets credit for this.
He knew that when he was going to the Warriors,
he was going to catch hell until he left the Warriors.

(15:58):
There's a level of courage for him to say, yeah,
I know this is going to all of you off,
and I don't care. And I think eventually Draymond it
was a lot. I mean, they were you know, Michael
Jordan didn't deal with Twitter and the nastiness. All these
athletes now are dealing with a level of scrutiny staying
with our presidents. It's just kind of gross. Ye. And

(16:19):
I find myself, even though he can drive me nuts,
I find myself always rooting for Kevin Durant.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (16:26):
I mean he's liked.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
In the NBA by players absolutely.

Speaker 6 (16:29):
He is extremely likable.

Speaker 7 (16:31):
And one of the things that players really respect about
him is you know that you'll see guys Wilet's say
I just want to hoop, right, Kevin means it. He
wants to play every day, He wants he's game for
a game.

Speaker 6 (16:42):
At any time.

Speaker 7 (16:42):
He loves basketball, and players see that, fancy that, and
it just seeps through about Hey, I like this guy.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
Yeah. There are certain players in sports I don't root against,
but it doesn't break my heart if things don't work
out well. Durant's one of those is though, even though
some of his decision making on where he's playing drives
me nuts, I'm like, he's so much fun and he's
got I love the fact that he takes shots at people.

Speaker 6 (17:07):
Yeah, no, it's tremendous.

Speaker 7 (17:09):
And look, Kevin had his reasons for going to the
Nets after Golden State.

Speaker 6 (17:12):
I respect those reasons.

Speaker 7 (17:14):
If it were me with my reasons, I would have
gone to the Knicks in the first place. Yeah, because
I just think the fit there would have been great.
I think he would have been the most popular player
on Earth because it's the biggest market in the NBA
and no one loves their team like New York Knicks fans.
So I think it would have been a good move
for him in many ways. I mean, if he had
just gotten that team to a conference finals, people would

(17:35):
have just been, oh my god.

Speaker 5 (17:36):
Right.

Speaker 7 (17:37):
So I don't know if the Knicks are going to
actually acquire him this summer.

Speaker 6 (17:42):
But if he did, if they did, to me, it
would be okay. Finally he's in the right place.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
If you ask players and people you talk to in
the league, Sga or Jokic, what are they saying privately?
They don't want to say it publicly again in hell.
But if you ask people like you do, yeah, privately,
who you got, what do they say?

Speaker 6 (17:57):
Well, it's been interesting.

Speaker 7 (17:59):
It really is a coin flip, and most guys will
tell you that. And what I like about this MVP
race is that, at least so far, we haven't seen
some of the tearing down of the other guy and
the vitriol that we've seen in past years. I mean,
it got pretty bad with Mbiid and Yokich, and it
got pretty bad with some of these other comparisons Harden
and Westbrook when they were dueling and going at it

(18:20):
very close. This has been a lot of respect from
both sides. I think the fans have taken a page
from the players who have been so respectful and been
respectful themselves on Twitter, on all of the social media channels.
So I like that it is a coin flip. People
are treating it as such. Shay has a lot going
for him, leading the league in scoring, He's the best

(18:40):
player on the best team in the West.

Speaker 6 (18:42):
He is a sensational defender, and.

Speaker 7 (18:46):
That team, you know that they look like a lot
of trouble.

Speaker 6 (18:50):
On the other.

Speaker 7 (18:51):
Hand, Nikolai Jokich, he said the play he said the
other day. He said, he said, I'm playing the best
I've ever played in my career, and for a guy
who has won three MVPs, that is a statement.

Speaker 6 (19:03):
But he is correct.

Speaker 7 (19:04):
He is career highs in scoring, career highs in three
point percentage, career highs in steals, which has already been.

Speaker 6 (19:12):
A strength of his.

Speaker 7 (19:13):
And you have to look at the valuable and most valuable,
and you can say Shay is incredibly valuable to the Thunder,
which he is, and when he doesn't play, you can
see that. However, the Thunder have a much more complete
and talented and deep team around him. When Nikola Jokic
doesn't play bad twenty point difference when he's off the floor.

(19:34):
If you compare that to Shay, it's about fifteen points.

Speaker 1 (19:37):
That I think is the single best argument for Jokich
is that Okase is so good defensively. Yeah, they can
win games without him, Yes, and like beat decent teams.
Denver is unwatchable and awful when you'll get to those
in play. Well.

Speaker 6 (19:51):
Look, Jamal Murray, as we all predicted, has.

Speaker 7 (19:53):
His usual second half of the season rise and he's
been playing better.

Speaker 6 (19:57):
But Aaron Gordon's been out. I mean, Jokic just do
the most.

Speaker 7 (20:01):
The fact that he's not just averaging a triple double,
but scored two triple doubles within one game a week
or so ago, I mean, that's that's incredible. But again,
I don't want to disrespect what Jay gilgis Alexander is done,
because man, he looks great out there.

Speaker 1 (20:16):
Yeah, Rachel Nichols, great seeing you.

Speaker 3 (20:18):
Great to see you two as OLA's.

Speaker 1 (20:33):
I was talking about the Dodgers Yankees and J mack
was just said he didn't recognize me. Just put this up.
This is what I was talking about, folks. This is historic.
Look at the Dodgers starting staff, Yamamoto, Sazaki, Snell, glassdow
Glaston was Tampa's best pitcher two years ago, Dustin may
Oh Tawny and then if you know spot Starter Kershaw,

(20:56):
There's never been a starting staff that. Look, you'd have
to go back to the nineteen seventy Baltimore Orioles and
forget the fact that Tommy Edmond, who's batting eighth in
the lineup ended up being like, didn't it was any
MVP of one of the playoff series. It's it's you've
never seen anything like this. And the Yankees, who got

(21:17):
extinguished by the Dodgers in five games, were only competitive
when Garrett Cole was out there. That then you felt
the series was even. Outside of that, Dodgers were doing
bullpen games in every series in the playoffs. So I
just I don't I'm not some baseball guru, right, but
that's staff. Guys were hurt. Glasnow got hurt, and Dustin

(21:39):
May wasn't healthy, and o Tani didn't pitch, and the
idea that they went and got beyond this the next
phenom Japanese pitcher and in spring unhittable. So it is
it's fascinating, you know, I don't think they care a
lot about what happens early. I mean, they've won the

(21:59):
division so many times. But if they're healthy and ready
to go, I mean that was the big thing last
year is I don't know if they have the arms,
And there were a lot of times you doubted do
they have the arms? And they still won the World
Series in five games.

Speaker 2 (22:12):
J Mack with a news no, no, no, this is
the headline.

Speaker 4 (22:18):
News all right, Colin, Let's start with an unbelievable finish
in the NBA last night, Tyrese Haliburton had the play
of the night, maybe the play of the calendar year.
Three and a half seconds left in the game Indiana
out of bounds play, Halliburton drills the three from the
corner and he's fouled. Pacers shocked the Bucks. I mean,

(22:40):
if you're watching, this was awesome. I mean, what a
diagram of a play.

Speaker 3 (22:44):
They ran the.

Speaker 4 (22:45):
Football play where they have three guys sprinting and Haliburton
curled around.

Speaker 3 (22:48):
It was awesome.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
You know, we we kind of liked the Pacers last
I loved them coming into the season. What's going on?

Speaker 3 (22:55):
Took a little while to warm up for them.

Speaker 4 (22:57):
They just didn't start out great and they're starting to
find the footing.

Speaker 1 (23:00):
Now, Okay, I'm by the way, you had Halliburton as
a first ballot Hall of Famer. Where's he at.

Speaker 3 (23:07):
Now with Jill first ballot hall? Okay?

Speaker 1 (23:08):
Alright, last year you had him is you really went?

Speaker 3 (23:11):
He was like SGA last year he was he very.

Speaker 1 (23:14):
Everybody likes him as a guy. Yeah, Like he's a
real personable guy.

Speaker 4 (23:18):
I'm a little nervous if the Knicks have to play
the Pacers first time. Pacers are good and deep many
I'm just telling you they're good Nicks.

Speaker 1 (23:27):
Some of these teams are bizarrely deep, like Oklahoma City
and Boston are like crazy deep.

Speaker 3 (23:33):
Yeah, NBA, they've done a good job. The team's at
a job building out their roster.

Speaker 4 (23:38):
All right, let's move now to the story that you're
led in love with this Aaron Rodgers situation. So Pete
Traeger reported this morning that Rogers could take four weeks
to decide where the land. The last time Rogers was available,
he followed Brett Fard's footsteps.

Speaker 3 (23:54):
From Green Bay to the Jets.

Speaker 4 (23:55):
Well, you know where far went after the Jets the Vikings.

Speaker 3 (23:58):
Well take a.

Speaker 4 (23:59):
Guess what Farv is suggesting Rogers do next.

Speaker 1 (24:01):
Colin here he is ball. I mean, simon, they got
a really good football team.

Speaker 2 (24:09):
They're loaded pretty much every position. They're gode it for
the playoffs last year.

Speaker 8 (24:17):
They got a tremendous fan base, much like the Packers.

Speaker 2 (24:25):
You know, if you get the opportunity that was, that's
a good.

Speaker 1 (24:28):
Place to win. Does Farv have carpet in his house?
Why is it that going like that? Dude? Let me
give your heads up on the whole podcast thing. Go
in a room with carpet, So Colin.

Speaker 4 (24:38):
If people killed Kevin Durant for going to the seventy
three win Warriors who did not win the title, how
can they not crush Aaron Rodgers if he basically follows
what Brett Farr did.

Speaker 3 (24:48):
Hey, you went to the from the Packer to the
Jets and then too the Vikings. I'm gonna do the
same thing.

Speaker 1 (24:53):
Colin's way worse than Kevin Durant. I'm sorry that is
Aaron that is not going to the bike.

Speaker 3 (24:58):
No, I would say, no way.

Speaker 1 (24:59):
I don't think have an O'Connell wants him. He won't
say it publicly at this point. You know, at the
end of anybody's career, yours mine, Aaron, anybody a politician's career.
There are things, you know, moody kind of committed off season,
wants buddies on the team. Aaron comes with a little

(25:22):
bit of Samsonite. There's a little bit, there's a little
bit of there's a little baggage with it. I think
it's I don't think i'm reaching on this. I think
that's just understood. He's gonna do you know, he's gonna
do things his way. That's fine. But I don't think
Kevin O'Connell. I think it's disruptive to some teams if
you're trying to build the culture. The Jets found this
out last couple of years. If you're trying to build

(25:43):
a culture, this is why Aaron Glenn said, see, you
you need your quarterback to be the most committed player,
not mostly committed.

Speaker 3 (25:52):
Didn't he blow off? Like was it otash blow it off?

Speaker 1 (25:55):
But it just he went to Egypt. It wasn't great.
You could do that, you know if Mahomes said, hey,
I'm gonna miss OTAs. Okay, Brady missed Ota. But when
you're building a culture like that's what the Jets have
been doing for twas building a culture, the quarterback has
to be the most committed guy, not a mostly committed guy.

(26:17):
It's not not hord okay.

Speaker 4 (26:19):
Final story, Colin is interesting NBA story. So the Detroit
Pistons are one of the best stories.

Speaker 3 (26:24):
In the league right now.

Speaker 4 (26:25):
Keith Cunningham's on fire Pistons are winning. I mean, they
won fourteen games last year. They're probably gonna end up
tripling that this year. They are tied with Milwaukee and
Indiana for the fourth seed.

Speaker 2 (26:36):
Needs JB.

Speaker 3 (26:37):
Bickerstaff is the coach.

Speaker 1 (26:38):
Shaq would not know that if you listen to O'Neill
talk about basketball. JB.

Speaker 4 (26:42):
Bickerstaff has completely turned this team around and is still toughness.

Speaker 3 (26:46):
Here he is after yesterday's went over the Wizards.

Speaker 9 (26:49):
I mean, we just played with a physical force and
that's our intent. You know, our intent is to be
as physical on the offensive end of the floor as
we are on the defensive end of the floor and
see how many teams can sustain it. You know, we
want to put a ton of foul pressure on people.
You know, we want to put guys under duress, make
people have to help and collapse in the paint. They
don't help them collapse. We got guys that are capable

(27:10):
of making shots. So our goal is just to try
to punish people as best we possibly can and see
what team makes the adjustment.

Speaker 1 (27:17):
I got to give you credit. You always complain about
this show that inside the NBA show because they simultaneously
rip the Lakers and the media for only talking about
the Lakers, then they don't know the coach for the Pistols.
So I mean, in fairness, I got nothing against those guy,
I've defended them. But if you're gonna rip the media

(27:38):
for only covering the big stories, then you should know
the coach of like Cleveland and Detroit.

Speaker 3 (27:42):
Those are kind of basics.

Speaker 1 (27:44):
Well, especially when you only cover one league. We cover eight.
But when you cover one league and you're banging on
the media for only covering the big stories, then you
should really be buttoned up on the non traditional big show.

Speaker 3 (27:57):
So, by the way, the NBA, the league pays these guys.
They are a paid partner.

Speaker 4 (28:02):
It's like, hey man, we're not asking too much watch
our games talking about our teams.

Speaker 1 (28:05):
Well, they were employed by the TNT, not not the NBA.

Speaker 3 (28:09):
And t has a TV deal.

Speaker 1 (28:10):
Well, the NFL is a TV deal with Fox. I'm
not paid by the NFL.

Speaker 3 (28:14):
No, no, no, not at all. But I'm saying like
they're league partners. Okay, the television.

Speaker 1 (28:18):
Partners or league partners with the NFL. We pass it
all the time, we do, but that's different though.

Speaker 3 (28:22):
We also talk about NBA baseball. We don't just talk
about football. You know they only talk basketball in that show.

Speaker 1 (28:28):
Well it's a job. It is the highest rated show a.

Speaker 4 (28:31):
Lot because they crap on everyone and just take shots
at their Well.

Speaker 1 (28:35):
Maybe that should be maybe maybe we should just do that.
We're not over pivot over to hater a all the time.

Speaker 3 (28:41):
I don't consume that. I'm a positive guy. No hater
a for me too much. Red forty in there.

Speaker 1 (28:47):
Are you done?

Speaker 5 (28:49):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (28:50):
Yeah, Jmack with the news.

Speaker 2 (28:52):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
herd Line News.

Speaker 1 (28:57):
We're gonna have Albert Breyer last hour. There's stuff floating around.
It's so tomorrow and Friday. I'm gonna make my first
division picks now, scoff. As you may last year at
this time, I pick Washington to be a playoff team

(29:18):
and Denver to be the most improved team. So I
feel I feel really good about these picks. Now, you
got to have at least four new teams. My favorite
part of my first predictions for the NFL. I'm not
you know, I'm not doing Super Bowl Bubble or picking
a game. I'm picking the division winners and the playoff teams.
My favorite part is over the last thirty years at

(29:41):
least four new teams will make the playoffs, and it
usually goes up to about six. And so when you
eliminate four, five or six playoff teams from last year,
fans freak out. But it never repeats minimum four new
playoff teams. So I have four right now, I think

(30:03):
five by tomorrow. I'll be very excited. It's one of
my I'm telling you very and I count. So what
do I count? So I count new coaching staffs, and
then I wait for free agency to be over. So
when those two things are over, Now I've watched Rabel
get hired and Rabel accumulate free agents, so you've you've

(30:25):
got trades, free agency, new coaches. Then I do a guess.
Then I do it after the draft. It won't change
a ton, but I mean, like you know, there are
teams that you know, if you get one or two guys,
it does I think it can change a win or two.

Speaker 4 (30:39):
But historically, and I need to remind you of this,
whoever wins the off season usually does not translate to
winning a seasons.

Speaker 1 (30:46):
Well, I don't think that that's true. Now.

Speaker 4 (30:48):
The Eagles did get saque last year, but like Zach Bond,
that was nobody bad at an eye right, he was
a special team.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (30:54):
No, And usually winning the off season doesn't matter. Although
you know Brady to the box and Stafford of the.

Speaker 3 (31:01):
Rams, come on, those are quarterbacks.

Speaker 4 (31:03):
But for most of these picks, uh, these free agent moves,
it just doesn't matter that much. Now the Patriots have
like seven new starters that could be significant.

Speaker 1 (31:12):
Yes, I think this free agent class for New England
is probably I think Vrabel's worth three points. The free
agent class is probably worth a point to a point
and a half. If they hit on Travis Hunter, is
he worth half a point for this team?

Speaker 4 (31:25):
What's losing both coordinators in Detroit worth minus three wins?

Speaker 1 (31:30):
I think well, And I also think I think Chicago
is going to be significantly better significant. Now, remember you
bought in all the smoke last year with Chicago.

Speaker 6 (31:40):
I did.

Speaker 3 (31:41):
I did.

Speaker 1 (31:42):
Old Uncle Colin had them fourth, so I said they'll
be more interesting. But I said they'd win seven to
eight games.

Speaker 3 (31:49):
I wasn't wrong. I was just early a year.

Speaker 1 (31:51):
Okay, sure, try having your stockbroker tell you that. By
the way, you know something's better. Add when a network
blocks you from getting video of a moment that's next.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and Noone eastern nin am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio App.

Speaker 10 (32:13):

We talk about everything life, sports, relationships, what's going on
in the world. We have a lot of fun talking
about the stories behind the stories in the world of
sports and pop culture, stories that well other shows don't
seem to have the time to discuss. And the fact
that we've been friends for the last twenty years and
still work together. I mean that says something, right, So
check us out. We like to get you involved too,

(32:48):
take your phone calls, chop it up. As they say,
I'd say the most interactive show on Fox Sports Radio,
maybe the most interactive show on planetar. Be sure to
check out Covino and Rich live on Fox Sports Radio
and the iHeartRadio App.

Speaker 1 (32:59):

just search Kobe non Rich wherever you get your podcasts,
and of course on social media that's Cavino and Rich.

Speaker 4 (33:11):
The USL is back, Skipholtz and the Birmingham Stallions are
a spring dynasty and now chasing a fourth.

Speaker 1 (33:19):
Title, but the rest of the league is coming for
the crown.

Speaker 3 (33:23):
The new season kicks off March twenty eight on Fox.

Speaker 1 (33:26):
You know, we know you were talking during last segment
about we were talking about with Rachel Nichols Luca to
the Lakers, which is just crazy. So there was always
this sense that the worst move in the history of
sports is Babe Ruth going Red Sox to the Yankees,
and like, there have been bad trades, but literally you

(33:48):
can argue the two trades that rival that have both
happened in the last calendar year. I mean, Luca to
the Lakers is insane. You get the younger, better player
in the same like stopping you from potentially getting to
the finals. I mean, it's one thing to trade him,
but if you know you send him over to the

(34:09):
Washington d C. They're not getting past the Celtics. They're
not getting past the Calves or the Knicks for years
as a different ball. It's not a good trade, but
you're not going to be reminded of it. Like I've
always said this, it's one thing to have somebody in
your family that you don't like. It's another thing if
they move next door. They're doing great and you're not
doing well, and they're reminding you every day where they

(34:30):
got the Maserati parked in the driveway. So if you're
gonna make a trade like this and you're the Red Sox,
don't get let him go to the Yankees. If you're
the Mavericks, don't let him go to the rival of
the Mavericks, which is everybody's rival in the West, the Lakers.
And that's why the Giants thing with Saquon Barkley and
I guess I mean the idea that is such a

(34:54):
bad move that HBO won't even release the video of
that Joe Shane, the guy behind me, the GM and
the Mara John Mora moment in the office. They won't
let the video out. The Giants are like, no, you're
not You're not letting the video out. So this year,
all the NFL teams they declined to be on it.

(35:17):
That's why they went to Belichick at Carolina. They're like,
we're not going on that show. And you know, there's
been tipping points in the history of TV. There's the
old Jump the Shark, which is a reference to like
Happy Days, and I remember the episode Fonsie's water skiing
or something or whatever it is. And there is the
Tom cruise on the Couch with Oprah. He sort of
jumped the shark and Tom always had great energy and

(35:38):
it went like he went crazy, and you know, you
don't know where these things come from. I actually think
the tipping point with these access shows is that Joe
Shane moment where it's like and I don't know who
has control, Like once you let HBO film that, I'm
not sure who controls it gets out, but it got

(35:59):
out and we talked. By the way, I'm not late
on this. We said it when we watched it. Oh
that's that's the worst thing I've ever seen. You know,
the media is mostly right on predicting the next superstar.
The media got it right on Bryce Harper when he
was sixteen. The media got it right on Tiger Woods
when he was thirteen. You know, the media got it

(36:22):
right on Lebron James Peyton Manning. The media is also right.
You think they're overreacting on the Saquon Barkley move or
the Luca move. It's like, yeah, this is bad and
this is historic, but it is. It's just crazy that
you would let Saquon Barkley go to your rival. And

(36:43):
by the way, the minute you let him go to
your rival, you know, Howie Roseman just loves rubbing your
nose in it, Like Howie Roseman is the most almost
borderline even I know guys that know how he kind
of like him. He's obnoxious. It's just brutal. So we
can't I wanted to. We were gonna do a topic
on this. We can't show you the video again, so

(37:07):
we're gonna reenact it for the Sorry about radio. You're
not going to see the masks. We're gonna reenact this
if you've never seen it, because I think it's the
most important part of a reality show access piece of
video ever. So if you've not seen what happened, I
will play John Mara, I own, I own. We're taking
word for word how it happened, and j Mack will

(37:29):
be the young, handsome Joe Shane and we're going exactly
off script. Are you ready to go?

Speaker 3 (37:34):
Yeah, let's rock and roll.

Speaker 1 (37:37):
So, uh, what's the latest on the Saquon thing?

Speaker 4 (37:42):
All right, I just got a text that Chicago is
driving the price up and Philly is out. I don't
know if that's true or not. That Oh, I'll make
a couple of calls. I don't even know if that's
gonna happen.

Speaker 1 (37:56):
I have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to
philadel If, I'll tell you that. As I've told you,
I've been around enough players, he's the most popular player
we have by far. All Right, there I go. That

(38:20):
was pretty impactful. So sorry, if you didn't have the video,
HBO would not allow us to use a video. It
is incredible though. And the Luca thing, I mean, Jeanie
Buss is admitting yesterday, Yeah, I had no idea it
would be this big. So it's I was told this.
This is something that people in business talk about this

(38:40):
all the time, is that once you, let's say, for instance,
you've done well in your life, you and your family
have done well in your life, A stockbroker, once you've
done well in your life should be like the great
baseball player stand usual home run power. But man, you're
gonna lead the league in doubles every year. Just hit

(39:02):
a bunch of doubles with some home run power. And
like a lot of times in pro sports, just don't
make the big mistake. Hit doubles once you get the
quarterback right, like I just just hit doubles. Just just
just keep the ball in the fairway. Don't double boget,

(39:25):
just keep it in the fair way. The Giants and HBO,
you know, they are protecting this video like it's government documents,
Like they don't want this thing out because I mean,
I don't root against people. If Joe Shane doesn't make it,
That's why you kind of hope the Giants make it
to me, so it saves the guy's job. I don't
want to see people being unemployed for life. There is

(39:47):
no GM school. If you butcher the first run at it,
you don't get a second run. Most of the time.
Quarterbacks do players do coaches do? Coaches? Get three chances
a GM butcher's it, and like something hangs like Joe
Harrison is not getting another GM job if he gets
fired by the Mavericks, He's not getting another one. Joe
Shane and not getting another one. I mean, Jeanie Buss

(40:09):
has been in the Lakers ownership group forever. She can't
even believe how big and impactful the Luca deal was.

Speaker 8 (40:17):
We were not looking to trade Anthony Davis. Dallas contacted us.
It was a deal that both sides wanted to make.
I didn't anticipate the global impact it would have. I mean,
I knew it was gonna be a big story in
the NBA, but he really is a global superstar.

Speaker 1 (40:35):
And I always said this about the Giants thing. The
minute John Mara said I'm gonna have a tough time
sleeping if Saquon goes to Philadelphia, I'll tell you that. Okay,
the minute he said that, that would be my boss
coming to me. And there's a huge It's a Monday

(40:56):
after the NFL and Fox has its rate is rating
ever on a game and my boss coming to me
and saying, you know, I'm gonna have a tough time
you leading with hockey on Monday's opening segment. I'll tell
you that, you know what, you don't lead with hockey. Okay,
when your boss says I'm gonna have tough time sleeping

(41:18):
if that guy goes to Philly. You sign him. You
just you literally bring in the department, you bring in
the account accountant, and you're like, Okay, we're gonna sign him.
I'm not letting him go. I'm signing him. So I mean,
that's just not that is not reading the room the
owner told you, because the camera was on and the
owner knew it. So he's not gonna drop an F bomb.

(41:38):
You know, he's not gonna be incendiary. He's just gonna
John mar is smart enough to know the camera's on.
I'm gonna protect my butt. And he said, boy, I'm
gonna have a hard time if if you don't if
he goes to Philadelphia. What he was telling you was
he'd better not go to Philadelphia. And here's how he
Roseman over in the corner. If I had a Howie

(41:58):
Roseman mask, that's what Howie Roseman's doing. You know, He's
gonna rub your nose, that's how he does. So all right,
two hours flown by, Albert Brear is gonna stop by,
and uh, you know the other thing, I'm on the

(42:18):
Aaron Rodgers thing in the Russell Wilson. So essentially, if
you're the Steelers, would you would you wait for Aaron
or just say, hell, well it I'm signing Russell if
you have the choice now, Like sounds like they don't
want Russell Wilson to well obviously, or they'd sign him.
So my take is, but would you want to wait
for Aaron when you know he could sign somewhere else

(42:40):
where else?

Speaker 3 (42:40):
Giants?

Speaker 1 (42:41):
Well, what a what if Aaron and Russell both signed
somewhere else? What did the Steelers do?

Speaker 4 (42:45):
You go for Kirk Cousins once the Falcons release him,
You're not gonna have a backup making like thirty five
million a year.

Speaker 1 (42:52):
It's it's a tough spot kind of at Aaron's discretion.
