to the Herd podcast. It's interesting about the mandatory mini

(00:28):
camp starts tomorrow and whether you like Schador Sanders or not.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Just have an opinion.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Anybody can be a troll and an expert if you
don't have an opinion and come in later. Every year,
what I do with the draft is I give you
strong opinions on quarterbacks. I was I think cam Ward's
going to be really good, Tennessee's going to make the playoffs,
and I think Shudor Sanders is a starting quarterback. I'm
not into Jackson Dart. You know how I feel about
all these guys. I'm not gonna sit on the sidelines

(00:54):
then come pouring in. Last year, I was much higher
on bon Nix than everybody else.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
I was right.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
I was on Sam Darnold. I ended up being right.
I thought Jaden Daniels I kept saying before the drafts
he's going to be Lamar Jackson, but better from the pocket.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Now.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
I like Caleb Williams. We don't know how that's gonna
work out. But I like Pennix more than that. I
did not like JJ McCarthy. I think it's a bit.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Of a ruse. I don't.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
I think he's smaller than you think. I've got surgeries.
There's reports by Ross Tucker, there's doubts in the building.
I didn't buy it, but just have an opinion. My
take on Shadeur Sanders is despite the fact he had
no support from the run game, I think mostly an
average coaching staff, a bad old line. He was very
productive against good teams, and he played from behind, running

(01:41):
for his life. He got hit constantly. I don't think
he's an a prospect, but is he a B Yeah.
People I didn't love to No, No. I didn't love
Zach Wilson, Daniel Jones. I wasn't high on Marcus Mariota,
Johnny Manzel, Tim Tebow. I thought Cam was going to
be hit and miss. I think I've been pally accurate
on quarterbacks. I've missed on some, but just have an opinion.

(02:04):
My take on Shadur is he's accurate. I think he
processes well enough. I don't think the coach loves him.
I think the owner does, and I think he'll eventually
get a shot to play. Here's Hasselback earlier on the picket, Flaco, Dylan, Gabriel, Shadeur.
The entire quarterback race in Cleveland.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Usually quarterbacks, you know, they wear a different color jersey,
like a red jersey or.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
Something like that.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
You sit in the pocket, you're cool, you're comfortable, you're calm.
How do you play when that jersey is off? There
aren't as many reps to go around with all the
quarterbacks in the room. So I think you're gonna maybe
a I don't know when you're gonna get it, you know,
like some people are trying to manufacture that with joint
practices and that kind of thing.

Speaker 4 (02:46):
But a lot of this is going to be conjecture.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Yeah, there's gonna be a lot of different reports. I
am on team Chadure starts somewhere before. There's gonna be
the first five games. It is a lot of high
powered offenses. Joe Burrow and the Bengals, Lamar in the Bengals,
Lamar and the Ravens, Jordan Love in Green Bay, Jared Goff,

(03:13):
Jamir Gibbs, the Old Line, Amaran Saint Brown and Detroit
and Kevin O'Connell's Brilliants, Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Minnesota
has a lot of points, and Jimmy Haslam the owner.
And then it's Aaron Rodgers at Pittsburgh, and I don't
love that offense even with Aaron or without him.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
But after that.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
It's Mike McDaniel and Tua, and then it's Rabel and
Drake May. There's gonna be a lot of star quarterbacks,
a lot of ascending quarterbacks, a lot of flashy quarterbacks,
and that ownership Jimmy Haslim is not gonna sit there
and have dol Kenny Pickett and small or old Joe
Flacco or small Dylan Gabra. He's gonna want to Star's

(03:52):
why I drafted Man's Ellen Baker and why had that
ridiculous contract with Deshaun Watson. Shadour's gonna get snap I
would be shocked if she door doesn't get snaps by
at least like the Miami or New England game. Jmckle
the news, No, No, this is the Herd Line News.

Speaker 5 (04:15):
All right, Colin, I'm on record. I got the Bills
winning the Super Bowl this year. But some bad news
regarding James Cook. They're electrifying running back, the younger brother
of Dalvin. We know he wants a new deal, Colin.
According to Adam Schefter, Cook has disconnected from the team
and apparently nobody expects to him to see him in

(04:35):
Buffalo anytime soon.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Now that ain't great. Now, this could just.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Be posturing, right.

Speaker 5 (04:40):
We've seen some guys do this usually, and I don't
want to paint with a broad rut, but usually when
this stuff happens, it leaves us a bad taste in
the mouth.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
Hey man, we're on the cusp of something great. We
know you want to get paid.

Speaker 5 (04:54):
I get it, you've been outstanding, but like I mean,
I don't know, Colin, this just is not great.

Speaker 6 (05:00):
June.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Let's not over how many James Cook has been there?
Would this be his year? Fourth year?

Speaker 4 (05:05):
He has not been there long.

Speaker 5 (05:06):
But the problem is he blew up last year and
because of that, everybody's like, oh, this guy's like a
top five running back in the league.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
I don't really know what to make of.

Speaker 5 (05:18):
Like, can Josh Allen cape Upburm or get him in town.
You know they don't have a great receiving group. We
know that they're going to two tight ends. Cook is
the bell coutt.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Yeah, I don't love it either. He's a good player.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
I really like him. He's a smallish running back. You
know he's running backs. He's a smallesh running back who
doesn't want to take a beating. You know, he's playing
in cold weather.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
This would be year four for him. Colin he had
the sixteen touchdowns last year. Well that is I've eleven
a buck ninety.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Well, you know what, he's probably looking at that team
and saying, outside of Josh Allen, I'm the offensive engine.
We don't have a very good receiving corps. Ken Kaide's
been a little disappointing.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
I want my mom.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
And by the way, you get into that year four, now,
James Cook was he drawing? Was he drafted second third round?

Speaker 2 (06:05):
He was?

Speaker 4 (06:07):
It's not saying here, but so.

Speaker 5 (06:11):
He probably second round pack second round pick in twenty
twenty two.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Okay, so you're getting the year four. He wants to
get paid. He want he wants a deal earn. So
he didn't get paid with his first contract.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
It turns twenty six in September.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
If he can secure a big four money deal for
years twenty twenty six. For every position in football outside
of running back is heading into your prime at twenty
six years old. As a running back, you are in
the middle of your prime and maybe two high volume
carry years away from end of your prime.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
So running back's age faster. So you know he wants
to get paid. I get it.

Speaker 5 (06:47):
So like you see Jamiir Gibbs at twenty touchdowns, but
Jamiir Gibbs is like a one A or one B
with the other back Montgomery Cook.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Well, Jamire show. Yeah, Jamier Gibbs is a first round talent.
He's a home run hitter. Hi like James Cook. I
love Jamiir Gibbs. That's a different player.

Speaker 4 (07:03):
Jim's just Splinton carries. You could look great and you
don't have to carry twenty times. Kaye.

Speaker 5 (07:07):
I'm bullish on Cook and the Buffalo Bill's next up, Colin,
how about your guys the Chargers. They have bolstered their
wide receiving group this offseason to help Justin Herbert. Last
year it was the Lad mcconkee Show. He was phenomenal
eighty two catches, seven touchdowns. Quinton Johnston was their number
two receiver. So what they've done this offseason is they

(07:28):
brought back Mike Williams and they added Trey Harris, so
Quintin Johnston less of a burden and Colin Would you
believe it that? Oc Greg Roman says this year's wide
receiving group is night and day different than last year.

Speaker 4 (07:42):
Positive sides for the Chargers.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Well, also nausea Harris and Hampton on the running back
the rookie first rounder from Carolina. So it's gonna be
I think it'll if Jim Harbaugh's second year at every
place has been from Stanford, Sanford, Cisco, Michigan, and my

(08:05):
guesses were the Chargers. It takes Jim about a year,
so it feels like his footprint hit the stamp is
on his team. So last year, what does he do,
He gets an offensive tackle. This year, what does he do?
He goes and gets running backs. I don't ever remember

(08:26):
a Jim Harbaugh team that was dynamic at wide receiver.
I don't remember a Jim Harbaugh team that wasn't good
on the O and D line and could not run
the football. So to me, I feel like if there's
a team that's actually undervalued Jim Harbaugh year two, virtually
every place it feels like a Harball team. Last year

(08:46):
felt it didn't feel like a horrorball team. Last year
felt like he had changed the culture and it was
now a winning team, but the personnel didn't feel like
it was a Harbaugh team. Hampton and Nauseie Harris both
power running backs to speed. This is officially Harbaugh's official
imprint on the balls.

Speaker 4 (09:06):
Yeah, like JK.

Speaker 5 (09:06):
Dobbins with their number one back last year. I mean
no disrespect, but Harris is better and so is Hampton.
And I ran into some friends yesterday at a beach
volleyball tournament who kids are in the same greate as Harball.
Jim Harbaugh is very geeked for this season. I'll leave
it at that, but I will be buying stock.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
In the Charcters this season.

Speaker 5 (09:25):
Listen, the hype machine is out of control for La
out Here. Final story Collins is the NBA and an
interesting story emerging about Sons owner Matt Ishbia. He sent
out a letter internally that got leaked about how he
was like kind of hey man, I wasn't as involved
as I should have been. Now I will be extremely

(09:45):
active in the decisions and management of this organization on
and off the floor. While I won't be reviewing film,
designing offenses, and running the draft room, I will be
deeply involved in ensuring the basketball.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
Operations are performing at the high level.

Speaker 5 (10:00):
Now, Colin, there are some reports about the ispia's businesses
maybe struggling a little bit, and I will add this one. Okay,
we're seeing this second apron where the owners have to
write checks for fifty sixty seventy million dollars. We're seeing
ownership saying whoa James Dolan. Wait a minute, wait, what's
going on? Okay, I want to pick the coach we're

(10:21):
now seeing isbia All he brought it?

Speaker 4 (10:23):
Did you see Michigan. He's a Michigan state guy. Brought
in a Michigan State GM, a Michigan State head coach.

Speaker 5 (10:28):
Owners because of what's happening big picture in the league
are starting to get more hands on.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
I don't know if that's a good thing.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
Apparently he brought Devin Booker in and was like, what
do you think of this new coach? I mean, Devin
Booker's up for like a massive contract I don't like
the vibes around the Phoenix Suns right now, and they're
trying to trade KD and get it out quickly.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
I mean, I think if you look, if you look
at the Boston Celtics, who's made the decisions Danny Ainge
to Brad Stevens basketball guys, general manager run organization. If
you look at who has run Oklahoma City general manager
Sam Presty. If you look at Utah's boltload of picks,
Danny Ainge, if you look at through the years, who

(11:11):
was really spearheaded the Miami Heats. You know, consistency, Spolser's
been the coach worked very closely aligned with pat Riley.
I think even a brilliant I mean, yes, yeah, guy
in Minnesota.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
So I think I.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
Mean Phil Jackson, as great a coach as he was,
did he have the energy at the end of his career,
to be the GM of the Knicks. I believe this
with every ounce and I'll talk about it. I think
people think basketball is a simpler sport because the rosters
are smaller. I mean, if you get a star too,
you're good. Phoenix is a great example. Is that doesn't

(11:51):
work that way. Bradley Beal didn't work. With Booker and
Kevin Durant, it felt it sounded good, it didn't work.
I think we tend to understand that baseball is really
complex because you have like the pitchers are like a
separate unit, and baseball the season is long, and you
know it's it's most owners that want to sit. Jerry
Reinsdorf's an exception. They don't want to watch one hundred

(12:12):
and sixty two games.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
They own it.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
And I feel like in football, we understand so much
of it as the college draft and the hours out.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
But in basketball, I think a lot of these owners.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
Think there's thirteen guys, I got a head coach and
a couple of assistants.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
That's not the way it works.

Speaker 1 (12:29):
Go look at the best rosters and best run organizations.
San Antonio R. C. Buford was running the international stuff.
They were stealing players overseas, and then he worked well
with pop. The idea that some rich guy, it says
like tep. You know, the rich guy comes in and thinks, hey,
it's a small roster. Let me stay out of it.

(12:49):
Let your basketball people be empowered totally.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
Shaymack with the news.

Speaker 7 (12:57):
Well that's the news and thanks for stopping the herd
line news.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
No. I was saying this earlier about Okac and Indy.
I don't think it's a fascinating series. I think Indy'll
come back and win a home game or two. I
think it's a six game series. I'll take Okce. But
earlier today I was talking about if you look at
the old days, I mean, Michael Jordan hated the Celtics.
Michael Jordan hated the Pistons, The Lakers hated the Celtics,

(13:27):
the Knicks couldn't stand the Bulls. There was real animosity
in the league, not only from the organizations, but the owners,
the general managers, the coaches, and the star players because
everybody was trying to get their tiny slice of the pie.
Go look at what Michael Jordan made with the Bulls.
Didn't make that much money until the very end. We
what Magic made with the Lakers as a player. So

(13:50):
in the NBA now you don't have that combativeness. The
players are all rich, they like each other, and Jason Tatum, Jokic, SGA.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
They're all nice guys.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
And as a Halliburton, ooh, he's a trash talker. They're
nice guys, and so I said, this series needs Draymond
Green or Bill Amberd Dennis Rodman. It needs some combativeness,
and instead what you have is a business like approach
run by a smart GM in Oklahoma City and a
veteran coach in Carlisle run by a high IQ EQ

(14:24):
point guard.

Speaker 7 (14:25):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
at noon Eastern non a em Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 6 (14:34):
Hey, we're Cavino and Rich Fox Sports Radio every day
five to seven pm Eastern.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
But here's the thing.

Speaker 6 (14:40):
We never have enough time to get to everything we
want to get to.

Speaker 8 (14:43):
And that's why we have a brand new podcast called
over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun in
our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly,
because this guy is over promising things we never have
time for.

Speaker 7 (14:56):
Yeah, you blover name and me.

Speaker 6 (14:57):
Well, you know what it's called over promise. You should
be good at it because you've been over promising women
for years.

Speaker 8 (15:01):
Well, it's a Covino and Rich after show, and we
want you to be a part of it. We're gonna
be talking sports, of course, but we're also going to
talk life and relationships. And if Rich and I are
arguing about something or we didn't have enough time, it
will continue on our after show called over Promised.

Speaker 6 (15:15):
Well, if you don't get enough Covino and Rich, make
sure you check out over Promised and also Uncensored by
the way, so maybe we'll go at it even.

Speaker 4 (15:22):
A little harder.

Speaker 6 (15:23):
It's gonna be the best after show podcast of all time.

Speaker 8 (15:25):
There you go, over Promising. Remember you could see it
on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen Over Promised with
Cavino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or
wherever you get your podcasts.

Speaker 1 (15:37):
I don't think it's a dynamic series. I think it's
a die hard basketball fan series. Chris Bruce Hard now
joins US Live. But I do think the NBA has changed. Chris,
is that you and I grew up. We were much more.
I mean Bird and Doctor Jay once got into a fistfight.
Jeff van Gundy, there was a brawl on the courch
and he's crawling underneath players. The league is different now,

(16:00):
it's more international, it's everybody's getting paid. I like this series,
but they do understand those who say there's not a
lot of drama with it.

Speaker 2 (16:09):
Your thoughts.

Speaker 9 (16:11):
Yeah, look, it does lack the buzz of previous series,
and that's just the fact that they don't have superstar
driven rosters. Obviously Sga is a superstar, but he's young,
and he's not particularly outspoken or Charis matt He's a
good personality. He seems like a great guy, and he's

(16:31):
not shy. He's kind of like Tim Duncan though I
mean he's you know, a little more outgoing, more color
to him than Tim Duncan, but he is not a
captivating personality.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
At least not yet.

Speaker 9 (16:45):
And it's the same thing on the other end with
the Pacers.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
Both of these.

Speaker 9 (16:48):
Teams, like you said, they play team basketball. They're not
led by one or two you know, superstars and generational talents,
and that's why you lack it. And also the games themselves,
like Game one was dull until the end because ok
led by about ten right for the whole game, and

(17:09):
then last night they lead by fifteen to twenty for
the whole game. So they haven't been the greatest games either.
I'll say this and you may get to Sga Collin
because he's obviously phenomenal if he played like Anthony Edwards
or Jahn Moran. I mean the high flying, flashy type game.

(17:32):
He would be an absolute superstar. I mean beyond what
he is now, Like he wouldn't be as good as Jordan,
but people would be comparing him to Michael Jordan. He
would be viewed as, Okay, now we see the next
Michael Jordan if he had that game and the same
exact stats and everything else. But because he's not high

(17:53):
flying like that, it's kind of like, oh, he's great.
Like I said, Tim Duncan of this generation.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
You know, I've argued this for years, brew is that
most of the stars in my life, Kareem wasn't dynamic,
Duncan wasn't dynamic.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
There's only been a handful of guys.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
Michael was crazy, Doctor j was wild, Magic was flashy,
but a.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
Majority of stars. Steph is unique.

Speaker 1 (18:21):
But I would argue the league's history is closer to SGA.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
I mean, go back to the seventies.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
The only player that jumps out is wildly dynamic was
Doctor j. It was a lot of It was a
lot of really you know, Bill Walton's, Rick Berry's you know,
it was a lot of really good players, but not
wildly dynamic. Right, That's right, Elvin Hayes exactly. But when

(18:50):
I look right now at the NBA, I don't know
if it's a problem. But I think the game is
more skilled. I think it's smarter. But Jokic, Sga, Tatum,
Jalen Brown, even the Honest hasn't developed a jumper like it's.
I think as we've asked our players to be more
skilled and the coaching is better, we're a little bit

(19:12):
less reliant.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
I kind of.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
I'll give the I think the play like Halliburton, Halliburton
and SGA are all angle guys.

Speaker 2 (19:19):
They're all playing their bodies. They're playing angles, they're playing math.

Speaker 1 (19:23):
I love it, but I don't it's I just think
the game has changed and you.

Speaker 2 (19:28):
To appreciate it. It's not as high flying as it
used to be.

Speaker 9 (19:32):
Yeah, I used to say, And this was maybe fifteen
years or so after Michael Jordan the game. The people
that ran the game front off is his scouts were
focused on hyper athleticism.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
So you saw guys stro Miles.

Speaker 9 (19:47):
Swift and some others get drafted Chris Wilcox, who really
weren't very skilled, but they had crazy athletics jump out
of the gym and quick and fast and now I
have always said Steph James Harden, some of these guys
who aren't uber athletic but are sensational players. They brought

(20:08):
the game back.

Speaker 2 (20:09):
To fundamentals and skills.

Speaker 9 (20:12):
If you have the requisite required level of athleticism and
you're skilled, you can be great. And going back Oscar Robertson,
you know, relatively he wasn't a high flyer, he wasn't
ultra fast, but he was fundamentally sound and obviously phenomenal
magic and bird Now they were flashy passers, but they

(20:33):
weren't what you call super athletes, right, relatively speaking, and
yet they were so great. So you're right in that
this era has gotten back to more fundamentals. I also wonder, Look,
if I was in a different country and I'm learning,
I might not be as comfortable like English, the language
wouldn't be my first language. I might not be as

(20:57):
charismatic as I might be in my home country, right right,
I don't know if does that right? You're still getting
adjusted to the culture and things, and Yannis obviously has
some personality stuff, but you're not at home, So does
that you know impact you know, guys I don't know
being themselves or being as colorful as they might be

(21:18):
if they were speaking in their you know, native language
and their first language and things like that. Just something
you know, you wonder about because obviously so even SGA's
from Canada. Now obviously he's English's first language, but it's
still he's from a different country. Then American didn't grow
up in the American culture, so to speak.

Speaker 2 (21:38):
Yeah, No, I was just overseas. And I say this
all the time.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
I tip better, I'm quieter, I'm more gracious, I am
aware of I'm more mindful when I'm overseas because I
feel like I'm a visitor. Even if I'm over there
for seven, eight nine days, I'm always a visitor. I
want to be a good America. So I do think
there's something to be set us. I think the game
is more skilled, it's more mindful, but it's it's there
aren't as many dying players.

Speaker 2 (22:00):
I want to ask you about the Knicks.

Speaker 1 (22:02):
So my take is when James Dolan was building the sphere,
he was sort of distracted and it became a very
good basketball front office. You had Leon Rose, you have Tibbs,
you have Worldwide West, and it's just basketball, guys. Basketball
addicted and they built a hell of a culture. And
I kind of feel like Dolan's a He's an artist.

Speaker 2 (22:23):
He's always been an artist. There's nothing wrong with it.

Speaker 1 (22:24):
That's why this so yeah, I mean, that's why the
Sphere is his It's his musical north star. It's his
greatest achievement, not Cable Vision, not the Knicks. It's actually
when he left, they had back to back fifty win seasons.
But if you look at Dolan's history, Isaiah, phil Jackson, Carmelo,
Amari Stodhoma, he likes stars.

Speaker 2 (22:44):
Could I argue that Tibbs was just.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
Never his kind of guy, gruff, a grinder, grumpy, and
that that's not what Dolan wants.

Speaker 2 (22:54):
He loves stars, he loves entertainment music.

Speaker 9 (22:58):
Now you're Lenny Wilkins, Isaiah Thomas, I mean big names.

Speaker 2 (23:02):
He wants them, right.

Speaker 9 (23:04):
And look, if the reports are true, and I'm sure
they are true, that they're looking at email Doka, right,
Chris Finch now from the Timberwolves, Jason Kidd obviously from
the Mavericks. It appears if that's the case. And look,
Leon Rose does not talk to the media on or
off the record, so I think he certainly got some

(23:25):
things playing that people may not know about. But if
they actually fired Thimbadeau without and your plan was we're
gonna go get Jason Kidd, We're gonna go get email Doka, Like,
how are you gonna, you know, sure fire, get a
coach from another team? Hopefully that that was not their

(23:46):
plan A because that is ridiculous if that were the case,
and if Dolan is and I know their reports are
that Dolan you know, is involved in this, that is.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
Not a good look.

Speaker 4 (23:57):
Because you're absolutely right.

Speaker 9 (23:58):
Like, if Lee Rose was doing a great job and
I don't mind them moving on from Timms, I would
not have done it at this point. But I think,
you know, it could work and there's rationale behind it.
But you gotta get the right guy, and the right
guy might not be the biggest name out there, you know.
I like a Johnny Bryant, you know, who was an

(24:19):
assistant with the Calvs this year, four years as an
assistant with the Knicks under Tibbs. He could bring that
Kenny Atkinson kind of system to the Knicks and get
more guys involved, not just a one and two man show.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
We'll see if they do that.

Speaker 9 (24:33):
He's not a big name, and if Dolan's looking for
a big name, they probably wouldn't go that route. But
that Dolan should not be involved at all in this decision, Colin.
And if he is, it could be this could backfire
on the Knicks because tims like him or not.

Speaker 4 (24:49):
He is a great coach, had a great.

Speaker 9 (24:51):
Season, and there's no Garrett. We don't know for a
fact he wouldn't have got them to the finals next year,
So this could backfire if Dolan's running it.

Speaker 2 (25:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (25:00):
I mean my take is he built the culture. The
issues with the Knicks were personnel issues. That Brunson's not
a good defender either as cat. The league has always
been a baby step league and they're one step away
that may be a k D step. It was it
was a personnel issue. It wasn't the coaching issue. Chris
Brussard co hosts First Things First, Buddy, I appreciate you
stopping Bybru.

Speaker 2 (25:19):
All right, Colin, see you. Yeah, I didn't get it.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
So and by the way, the story this morning and
the stories over the last few days I've read is
that Dolan did have an impact on this.

Speaker 2 (25:31):
And now they interviewed.

Speaker 1 (25:32):
Players and you know those closed door player only meetings.
You know, coaches get beat up in those, but NBA
has always kind of treated their coaches like laundry. Rick
Carlisle's been fired. Detroit fired, Rick Carlile, that Indy fire
him once. He's been fired twice. Rick Carlyle, pretty good coach.
It's Indiana past Cleveland. They thump Milwaukee, they beat the Knicks,

(25:58):
they were underdogs in all the series. They beat OKAC
in game one. Rick Carlisle's pretty good. He's been fired twice.

Speaker 7 (26:04):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd Weekdays
and Noon Easter not a em Pacific.

Speaker 1 (26:12):
You know the thing about Aaron Rodgers going to the Steelers.
We kind of have a fantastic four with quarterbacks Burrow Lamar,
Alan Mahomes. That's your fantastic four, and then I think
there's about six guys.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
After that we like, you know, that's Herbert C. J.

Speaker 1 (26:30):
Stroud, Jalen Hurtz, Matt Stafford's probably near the top of
that list. There's about six other guys. I think Jayden
Daniels you have to put in that list. And so
again the fantastic four, and then there are about six
guys after that. I would put Stafford at the top
of it. Jalen Hurts closer to the bottom of that
next six, and then you start with about a number

(26:53):
eleven and eleven to fifteen. I got Baker Mayfield near
the top of that. I have Aaron and Dak near
the bottom of that.

Speaker 2 (27:02):
Just Aaron and.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
Dak get a lot of press. But I think and
I think most people understand it. Like according to the stories,
Aaron was the third choice of the Steelers, and mcveahn
Kevin O'Connell both said not really interested, even at a discount.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
So I mean it's I mean, we'll talk about him.

Speaker 1 (27:20):
It's slow, it's June, but I don't think it makes
a huge impact. I do think if you'd have kept
Justin Fields, I'd said this earlier. If you go look
at what what Justin Fields did in six starts last
year for Pittsburgh, and you put the numbers up, they're
pretty good. I'm not a huge Justin Fields fan, it's
pretty good. Ten touchdowns to give voice. If you extrapolate

(27:44):
that to an entire season, maybe not in the AFC,
but in the nfc'd be a pro bowler. Twenty eight touchdowns,
six picks, ninety four passer rating. If Aaron Rodgers could
get those numbers and miss a couple of weeks place
fifteen games at forty one years old, you would sign

(28:07):
up for that today.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
I don't think.

Speaker 1 (28:12):
Aaron's going to reach those numbers. Matt Hasselbeck very optimistic
on Aaron with Pittsburgh.

Speaker 3 (28:18):
I do believe Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers is a
really good fit. And I told you before the veteran
quarterback market is like musical chairs. There's not a lot
of chairs the music stops. You know, all you need
is one chair. The thing for a veteran quarterback. You
don't want to go in and like learn some foreign language.
He's not going to have to do that. With Arthur Smith.

Speaker 4 (28:39):
This is a good fit.

Speaker 3 (28:40):
Aaron Rodgers has the weapons, the quirkiness. As you say,
there's it's okay in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is the kind of
organization that can handle it. I think they're going to
thrive from it.

Speaker 1 (28:52):
I don't see Pittsburgh as a kind of organization They
can handle him.

Speaker 2 (28:57):
But will they elevate him? Now? The Jets didn't, the
Pack did. But I always go back to Aaron's last
year in Green Bay. He was okay.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
I was a lot of years ago. They upgraded to
Jordan Love the following year. They were much more athletic,
much more dynamic.

Speaker 2 (29:11):
He was okay.

Speaker 1 (29:12):
Remember that played Jared Goff as Detroit was building into
a really good team and Jared Goff went into lambow
and beat him like that's what he was. So and
I also think what you're seeing here, and we've seen
in the last couple of years last year's draft, Monicks
looks like he could be special, Jaden Daniels is, Drake

(29:32):
may looks like he could be special. Michael Pennix, JJ
McCarthy fingers crossed, Caleb Williams has Ben Johnson. You can
go from the eleventh best quarterback in this league to
fifteenth really quick. I mean, Dak and Aaron now are
old post surgeries, they're old quarterbacks. So and now Baker

(29:54):
and Dre and Sam Darnold have been reborn. They're still
in their athletic prime. Baker Mayfield, how old? Sam Sam
Donald thirty? I mean you forget with all these young quarterbacks.
If I said right now, Sam Donald had a bigger
market Minnesota and Seattle than Aaron Rodgers. Sam Donald today's
a better quarterback than Aaron. That's not even disputable. Baker

(30:16):
Mayfield's a better quarterback than Aaron, that's not disputable. And
I think those guys are both around twenty nine, thirty
years old. What is it. Yeah, Baker's thirty and Sam's
twenty eight. So Baker, I would say, maybe a year
out of his prime. Sam's in his prime. So and
then you got a young guy. Now this was not
a good quarterback market. Cam Ward is the one that

(30:38):
jumps out Cam. We all like Cam. Here's Hasselbeck on
cam Ward becoming a leader as the youngest guy in
the locker room.

Speaker 3 (30:46):
As forty years old, I was backing up a young quarterback,
the first overall picked, also named Andrew Luck. He was
the hardest worker in the building. He was the first
guy there. He was the last guy to leave in Like,
those aren't just cliche things that was.

Speaker 2 (30:58):
Like actually legitimate true.

Speaker 3 (31:01):
Those are the reports that matter just as much to
me about about cam He's been a diligent, diligent worker.
He's setting the tone by when he gets to work,
how he works when he's there. He's not about the
flash and all the other stuff. He's about the business
of football. About the business of being the quarterback and
the leader. That's the stuff that I don't care if

(31:21):
you're young, old, everybody respects in the locker room.

Speaker 1 (31:24):
Yeah, I think J Mack, you and I disagree on
a lot of football topics. We both agree that Tennessee
is one of the better picks. You know, when we
talk about teams that we perceived as bad seven eight
win teams max that make the playoffs, I think we
both see Tennessee as that team.

Speaker 4 (31:42):
I would I agree with you a little while ago.

Speaker 5 (31:44):
Then this schedule came out and right out of the gate,
rookie quarterback has to face the Denver Broncos defense, which
is going to be elite, top four unit in the league,
followed by the Rams, who we know are an awesome
so an zero to two this schedule.

Speaker 4 (31:59):
Just then they got Houston in Week four. Colin, I've
backed off it.

Speaker 8 (32:03):
Now.

Speaker 5 (32:03):
Maybe I'm reading too much into the schedule, but I
mean they could go to the bye week ad like
three and six that it's just going to be tough
to make the playoffs unless Ward electric.

Speaker 1 (32:14):
Yeah, I kind of look at September differently. You're not
going to get the best of the Rams, in September.
You're not going to get that because it's seventeen game schedule.
We noticed this last year. People are coaching differently, the
people are players are playing differently.

Speaker 2 (32:28):
The league. We're going to eighteen games by next year,
that is my guess. We'll have it, not this year.

Speaker 1 (32:33):
The following year will be at eighteen games and two
by weeks like September. Will be fun, but you're not
going to get the best when you have an eighteenth
college now it's like at fifteen games. You have an
eighteen game schedule. You have to judge it differently. You
can't unveil the whole playbook in September. All right, we're
back tomorrow. First things first, around the corner.
