Speaker 2 (00:21):
To the Herd, It's me Jason McIntyre in for Colin Coward.
He is enjoying the last days of summer before football begins.
It is a beautiful Monday, and I'm joined by Rachel Nichols.
Everybody knows and loves Rachel Nichols, a longtime veteran journalist, host, analyst.

(00:44):
I mean she's done everything, Rachel, how was your weekend?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
You know, I was in Orlando for the Big Three
Championship game working with CBS, so it was kind of
crazy to see how much that lead has grown. Yeah,
right when it started, it was sort of like a
random off thing to do in the summer, and like
it's legit, man night, it's a full packed arena and
your names, you know, like Michael Beasley, Land, Stevenson, Mare
Chalmers winning the title.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
So you saw that fun. Orlando, very sunny in August,
a little heat there.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
It wasn't my favorite location to be in August, but
you know, you go where the basketball is.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
Yes, speaking of heat. My week off, I popped over.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
To Vegas, made some bets for the season, the upcoming
football season, and I saw Dave Matthews in concert. Excellent show.
As always, We have an excellent show ahead. We'll do
some gambling a lot of NFL as the week. We
are now ten days away from the beginning of the
NFL season. Oh boy, I am very excited. However, before
I left for vacation, there were a couple of big

(01:42):
NFL stories. Caleb Williams, is he gonna mesh with Ben Johnson?
I return, and it's still a problem. The Dallas Cowboys.
Michael Parsons, what's going on with him? And Jerry It's
still a problem. But bigger than both of those, perhaps combined,
is the shit Doer Sanders developing situation in Cleveland.

Speaker 4 (02:03):
Folks.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
There's no way around this. He is the most hyped
fifth round draft pick in the history of football. And
Chadour took the field in the second half for the
Browns and as you can see, here on FS one,
it was a bit of a poop show. In the
final preseason game for Shadoor Sanders, he was an unmitigated disaster.

(02:25):
In the second half, he was three for six for
fourteen yards.

Speaker 4 (02:31):
And it gets worse.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
He was sacked as you could see, running for his
life five times for minus forty one yards. So, if
you're keeping track at home, Rachel and I had more
net passing yards than Shadure Sanders did on Saturday night, folks,
this was bad, but a funny thing happened as the
critiques unfolded Sunday morning. And listen, I'm telling you right now,

(02:55):
every single podcast, TV show, radio show, anybody writing about
the NFL today is leading with Shador Sanders because it's
just so wacky what's going on in Cleveland. So you
guys know, in Hollywood out out here in LA there's
a thing called a nepo baby, Right, your mom or
dad were famous.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
So they were in music or entertainment and they.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Get handed something, whether it's an album, a TV role, directing,
and usually they're panned.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
Oh come on, nepo baby, they were handed it. They've
got to prove.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
It before they get the accolades. The opposite seems to
be happening with Shadoor. Sanders his legion of fans. He's
now a celebrity quarterback. They're just expecting him to make
the roster. I don't know that it's a one hundred
percent lock. I think he's gonna make it. We'll know
by Tuesday at four o'clock. But everybody's just expecting him

(03:48):
to be given everything, and folks, that's just not how
it works in the NFL. And if you listen to
shaduur talk, I mean, after this performance against the Rams,
it was bad and there's some more bad news coming
after it. But here's Shadoor talking about, Oh my gosh,
how upset he was that he was pulled before getting.

Speaker 4 (04:08):
A chance to redeem himself in the two minute draw.

Speaker 5 (04:11):
If I could go back and do anything, I mean,
it's always everything in.

Speaker 4 (04:16):
Life if you had that chance.

Speaker 5 (04:17):
But we don't have the lux for you to travel
back in time. As a kid, I want to go
back and do things differently. So overall, of course, you
know you wish you can, But in the battle, the moment,
in the heat of the battle, you know you want
to be the out. You want to be that dog
you want to be out there in that final two
minute drive, so you know, of course, of course small things,
of course frustrate, but that that's what happens, you know,

(04:39):
when you want a player to be able to change
a franchise.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Yeah, smiling on the outside, maybe crying on the inside.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
Listen, it was very clear he.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Was not happy to be pulled by Stefanski. So they
put in Snoop Puntley, veteran quarterback twenty seven years old,
second tour of duty with the Browns.

Speaker 4 (04:58):
He leads him right down the field for the game
when fieldbal okay.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
And all these fans of Shador, I'm trying to understand
why they love him so much, and he's like, he's
a guy, I get it. His dad is Deon Sanders,
and he's kind of swagged out.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
But he was terrible. Can we be real?

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Pro Football Focus had a number that was staggering. Shadeur's
average time to throw was five point one to three
seconds Saturday night. That's an eternity for a quarterback. And
he was still sacked five times in playing backyard football
and running around.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
So yet this weird thing happens, Well, wait.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
A minute, hold on, did you see that the Browns
cut four of the five linemen who were blocking for Shador.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
They cut them on sat on Sunday, so they weren't
giving Shador a fair chance.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Hello, guys, two of those linemen who were cut were
also playing for Dylan Gabriel in the first half, and
Dylan Gabriel absolutely cooked, moved the team up and down
the field nine for eleven, had a touchdown.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
And oh, by the way, two of those linemen.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
Were also blocking for Stup Huntley on that final two
minute drive. And side note, Dylan Gabriel was not sacked.
Stup Huntley was not sacked. So Kevin Stefanski, naturally he's
getting asked, yo, were you trying to sabotage your quarterback?

Speaker 4 (06:12):
Which is mind blowing nonsense. Here's Stefanski.

Speaker 6 (06:17):
Can you address this sort of persistent narrative that that
you're trying to sabotage Shadoor Sanders, especially after, you know,
after yesterday and not putting him in for the two minute.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
Yeah, obviously I don't.

Speaker 7 (06:35):
I don't concern myself with outside type of things, but uh,
you know, I'm committed to his development just like all
of our rookies. So I We'll continue to focus on
getting our guys better, and that's what we'll stay committed to,
and that's what's important to me.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Things are not good for Stefanski. Member, this is a
guy who at to deal with the Baker Mayfield nonsense.
Baker Mayfield, of course, was trying to play through an
injury to grint.

Speaker 4 (07:05):
It out disaster. Then he had Deshaun Watson. Awful, let's
not just speak of it, folks.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
This is reminiscent of Bronnie James from two summers ago. Okay,
remember it was like, who's the first pick in the
Brownie Draft? I don't know, Bronnie went to the Lakers.
It's all anybody cares about. Did you know Kim Ward
got in a preseason fight? Good luck fighting that online.
You know how Travis Hunter doing trying to be a
generational two way profit?

Speaker 4 (07:30):
Oh, we don't know.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
It's all about the fifth round or Shaudur, Folks, I
have a solution.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
I'm one of these guys. I like to be solution oriented.
You know.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Apparently, you know, when the wife is upset with something,
you're supposed to really listen and take it in, And
I'm instantly like, let's just fast forward to the solution.
I cannot deal with this negativity, so I want to
deal with the solution for Shadeur. And I got shouted
down in the morning meeting when I said, I got it. Guys,
did you see the Raiders? They lost ad O'Connell out
six eight weeks fractured in. If I'm the Brown, get

(08:01):
chaduor out of here, please, I can't deal with this anymore.
Let's just ship him to the Raiders. Jay, nobody's trading
for Shador. Well, wait a sec, Wait a sec. Pete
Carroll did meet with Shadeur at the Combine. Schadeur loves Vegas.
Go look at his Instagram from January February. A big
fan of Vegas called Vegas legendary. It's not really legendary anymore,

(08:22):
but I understand why wouldn't the Raiders say, hey, let's
bring him in to be the backup. He can learn
from Gino Smith, who, by the way, struggled big time
when he was with the Jets right out of college.
Go ask Mark Sanchez about that. Sorry, Mark, listen, I
think Shadur can learn a lot. Nobody's gonna ask for
him to start in Vegas. Want to ship him out
of town. Hey man, we'll take a week and get

(08:42):
let's cut our losses. We don't need these headaches. And
guess who else is following them out the door? The
entire media. Nobody won't care about Cleveland anymore.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
Browns.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
You got to fix this now, from one problem to another.
Let's go to Dallas and uh Jerry Jones to Michah Parsons.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
I think this is like round nine. I think is
that where we are? Folks?

Speaker 2 (09:05):
I'm sure you saw the video from the weekend the
Dallas Cowboys played a preseason game. Michael Parsons the only
cowboy on the sideline not in a jersey. Michael Parsons
also laying down on a table while the football was
being played, And of course the media is freaking out.

Speaker 4 (09:22):
Who cares what happened on the field because it's Michaeh Parsons. Now,
Michael's got a bad back.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
But the Brian Schottenheimer spoke to the media and was like, hey,
he came back pretty clean. You can see where this
is headed. It's about to get ugly in Dallas. You know,
I already think the Cowboys are gonna be a bit
of a dumpster fire. But let's hear Jerry Jones talking
about the situation with his star defender Michaeh Parsons.

Speaker 8 (09:47):
We wanted to send the details to the agent. The agent,
so it was to stick it up. We had our
agreements on term amun, guarantees, everything. We were going to
send it over to the agent, and the agent said,
don't bother because we've got all that to negotiate. A lot,
already negotiated that, already moved off my marm own several areas.

(10:10):
It's the mama daddy deal. You go into mama and
she won't do it, and she's the boss, so boss,
she won't do it. So you run into daddy. Daddy says,
do it, and then you go back in say mama,
Daddy said it was all right.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
You lost me there, Jerry. Sounds like a Thanksgiving dinner
story from your grandpa.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
Listen.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
I don't want to be too harsh here on Jerry Jones.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
He's a power player in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
I get it, But I am one thousand percent siding
with Michael Parsons here a thousand.

Speaker 4 (10:44):
It's not even close.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
I got to pick up for the little man in
this discussion with a billionaire.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
Jerry, this isn't your first rodeo. You know.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
That's not how negotiations work. You can't just do have
a sideal with the player and then it goes to
the agent. You're ah, not gonna have. That's just not
how it works. Now, Jerry's been down this road before.
Deal with DAK was a disaster, strung it out.

Speaker 4 (11:06):
To the last moment.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Deal with CD Lamb did not go well, that was ugly,
But Jerry gets it on some level. We are now
in an attention economy, right, that's what it's all about.
Are you talking about Dallas?

Speaker 4 (11:20):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (11:21):
Is Jerry going on Michael Irvin's podcast. I didn't even
know Mike had a podcast. Maybe that's new. Congratulations Mike,
and Jerry's making the rounds and he's just talk about us.
We're Dallas, Please keep us in the news. And then
as many people suspect, a deal will get down at
the last moment. Chris Jones, you guys remember with the
Chiefs a couple of years ago, or maybe it was

(11:43):
last year, or whenever they played the Lions in Week one.
He missed the game and it was like, Okay, we've
got to get the.

Speaker 4 (11:48):
Chris Jones deal done.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
But what's different is Chris Jones had made a lot
of money Mikes still on his rookie deal, and Jerry
said something last week about how, hey, we've got him
under contract.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
For three more years. That sounds like he's pretty dug in.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
If you're a Dallas fan and you love Michael Parsons,
I'm gonna go ahead and guess he's the best selling
jersey on the Cowboys.

Speaker 4 (12:08):
If it's not number one, it's two or three, it's
right there at the top.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
You're starting to alienate your fan base a little over
what a contract really. You were gonna make him the
highest paid and now you're not because the agent is
getting involved. Like I'm just hopeful, folks, that this is
the last last we're gonna hear this and Dallas both
sides come to the table and get a deal done. However,

(12:32):
if you want to go back to this Emmett Smith situation,
which is slightly different because he was a free agent,
but he was at the height of his powers. The
Cowboys were a juggernaut in the mid nineties and Emmett
remember sat out the first two games of the season
waiting for a deal, ended up getting it after they
went zero and two. What happens if the Cowboys get
smashed in week one with know Michael Parsons, does Jerry

(12:53):
capitulate or does he say we've got him.

Speaker 4 (12:55):
For three more years?

Speaker 2 (12:56):
Well, Micah, you know, he could bring in an independent
doctor and say, oh my back, I can't go, Hey
can't play, and it gets really ugly. Now it could
already be a lost season for Dallas. But can't we
all just get along? I mean, I'm hopeful, I'm really
hopeful the Cowboys. We need stars like Michael Parsons in
this league. So Rachel, I don't know, we'll see. I'm

(13:19):
really rooting for Mica to get it done. But this
this negotiation looks kind of ugly.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
It feels different than some of the other ones you
mentioned right there. Feels like there's more bad blood here.
And the Cowboys have an advantage. They've got two years
of franchising they can do after this year, which is
the last year.

Speaker 4 (13:36):
On his contract.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
So Jerry has said we got three years to work
this out. So Mike is not in the power position here,
and if he just continues to sit out and sit out,
it'll cost him money if he can't get a medical excuse,
and even if he can, this is years off his
prime years of his career.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
It's a big deal.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
He hasn't made and he didn't make that much in
NIL because it was a COVID years of its.

Speaker 4 (14:00):
I'm rooting for you, Michael, but it's an uphill climb.

Speaker 9 (14:02):

Speaker 2 (15:08):
Heard Matt Moseley, who covers the Cowboys coming up in
about twenty minutes.

Speaker 4 (15:13):
Can't wait to.

Speaker 2 (15:14):
Ask him about Micah versus Jerry Gosh. You know, I
don't love talking about this next topic, but it is
utterly fascinating.

Speaker 4 (15:23):
You cannot look away from it.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
Bill Belichick over the weekend announced North Carolina is indeed
going to have a Hulu docu series covering the team.

Speaker 4 (15:36):
They will follow them around. There's cameras everywhere.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
As Bill Belichick returns to football coaching, this time in
college for North Carolina.

Speaker 4 (15:45):
Can he bring him to the playoff? It's a fun storyline. Now.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
If you remember a few months ago, North Carolina was
talking to HBO about hard Knocks and.

Speaker 4 (15:58):
That almost happened.

Speaker 2 (15:59):
It's like, oh, Belichick was once I go into a
TV show, Oh and it fell through?

Speaker 4 (16:04):
And then wait, he's really hard up for a TV show.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
Remember this is the same Bill Belichick who famously hated
the media, didn't like the cameras except for a spygate
ha ha, just kidding, not really, and would like show
up to the podium with like holes in his sweatshirt
and joke about face smash and snap face or whatever
his jokes were.

Speaker 4 (16:26):
He hates the media, he.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
Doesn't like the cameras, and now he's hard up to
get a docuseries on Hulu. Huh, what is afoot? Something
doesn't seem right here. And my initial take was that
his girlfriend is driving this boat and wants to be famous,
because you know, in the modern era, you go on
these reality shows Love is Blind, whatever food show it is,

(16:52):
and these people become famous. But somebody said something smart
in the morning meeting about what if Belichick is trying
to kind of have a rebrand.

Speaker 4 (17:03):
Okay, well it's easy to rebrand.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
Hey, I might be seventy three, but look at the
twenty four year old girlfriend. Now, Jordan Hudson herself is
fascinating because why would Belichick want a rebrand? Not a
lot of seventy three year olds are looking to rebrand themselves.
It could be because Tom Brady rebranded himself in Tampa
the same guy basically, but won a Super Bowl and

(17:28):
then he kind of won the divorce or whatever you
want to say. But would a seventy three year old
want to rebrand himself or would his twenty four year
old girlfriend want to rebrand him now she is? Again,
I don't love talking about this because it's one of
those tough topics where you know, once your kids get
to middle school, in high school, you start meeting parents

(17:51):
and I would say, you know, twenty five percent of
them are on their second marriage, and then you meet
the wife and she's like twenty years younger. So on
some level, I can under stand Belichick dating a younger woman.
This is significant. Looks like a forty eight forty nine
year age gap. She's going to turn twenty five. So
former college cheerleader who went to cosmatology school and she's

(18:12):
driving his rebrand.

Speaker 4 (18:14):
Miss main runner up.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
Is telling him what to do with look younger on
a college campus by getting a Hulu docu series. What's
next is Belichick gonna get botox, like we're how far.

Speaker 4 (18:29):
Do we take this?

Speaker 2 (18:30):
And I just I get worried. I spent some time
last night looking for Jordan Hudson interviews and good luck
finding her. Speak There's literally just photos of them now.
They're wacky photos like yoga on the beach, and I
get it. It's you know, young love or puppy love
or whatever they want to call it. But this to me, folks,
I know we're excited for Archie Manning.

Speaker 4 (18:52):
Ohio State this weekend.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
As the kids like to say, low key, I can't
wait for the North Carolina debut. This is either to
be awesome or it's going to be a spectacular disaster
trade wreck that you can't look away from.

Speaker 4 (19:05):
Let's go to Rachel Nichols with the news.

Speaker 9 (19:08):
No, no, this is the headline news, Jason.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
Let's start with some big news out of DC.

Speaker 4 (19:17):
That's right, my hometown.

Speaker 3 (19:19):
Terry McLaurin has reportedly agreed to a three year, ninety
six million dollar extension with the Commanders after a long
off season of contract negotiations and drummer. Now Jaden Daniels
and Washington can put all that behind them. You go
full steam ahead. What do you think what do you
think the outlook for the commanders is considering they're now

(19:41):
the ship's all there?

Speaker 4 (19:42):
Yeah, what was there? So this I forgot? This is
your team?

Speaker 2 (19:44):
Yeah, it's interesting.

Speaker 4 (19:49):
Why did this have to last so much? Why did
it get dragged out?

Speaker 2 (19:52):
I hope this is where Micah comes to a resolution
with the Cowboys. But yeah, I love McLaurin staying with
with Washington. Their offense is gonna be good, Rachel. That
defense has some questions.

Speaker 3 (20:03):
That's the nicest thing anyone has said about that defense.

Speaker 4 (20:08):
Look, let's talk about the bright spots, right.

Speaker 2 (20:10):
Yeah, I vosited, ye, yeah, a lot of negativity.

Speaker 3 (20:12):
Form no, no, no, But just because McLaurin just signed, right,
He was Daniels's favorite receiver right, caught thirteen of his
twenty five touchdown passes, especially the deep balls, and he
has been on par with other excellent receivers over the
last few years. Two Pro Bowl appearances in the last
three years. So the idea of the comfort factor for
Daniels I think is going to be a very big deal.

(20:35):
Having him there on Week one and the whole ballgame
right now in Washington is make Jaden Daniels comfortable and
continue with his progression because there is often that second
year slot.

Speaker 2 (20:46):
Yeah, we saw it was Hesay Stroud a little bit.
So Jaden was unbelievable on fourth down last year, high
leverage plays. He always seemed to deliver. That's going to
be tough to duplicate. Do you have any concerns about
them returning.

Speaker 4 (20:59):
To the playoffs? He's kind of stacked. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (21:01):
I don't have a concern about them returning to the playoffs,
but I don't think they're necessarily returning to the championship.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
In right, so I'll doubt that I'll move right.

Speaker 3 (21:10):
So, I mean, you know, the defense is going to
continue to be an issue. We have to see if
teams have figured out not just Daniels but Kingsbury's offense
and things in that second year. What else do they
have to show for themselves. They have beefed up a
little bit on the line, which is good news, but
I just you can't get around the fact that they
are right at the bottom. I mean, they could be
at bottom five defense this year. So there's only so

(21:33):
far you can go with that.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Let me ask you about it. Since you're Washington, we
don't call them Redskins, but from the Redskins they're off. Yes,
Jerry Clark was my favorite. I know a lot of
people love Art Monk, but McLaurin, some of his numbers
line up with like.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
All time greats for Washington. People don't realize it.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
No, it's a good comp by the way, just in
terms of the way he moves on the field.

Speaker 4 (21:53):
Yeah, I think this had to get done.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
There was a point earlier this season where McLaurin asked
for trade because it wasn't getting done. They hang up
with a little bit about his age, right, he's thirty
years old. That tends to be the beginning of the
downslope for a lot of receivers.

Speaker 4 (22:06):
But if you look at the.

Speaker 3 (22:07):
Guys who have signed contracts around the around the amount.

Speaker 4 (22:11):
Of money that he has signed for, they're all around
his age. They're thirty, thirty one, thirty two.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
He is the sixth best paid receiver this year with
this new deal.

Speaker 4 (22:20):
I would take him over Ayuk, wouldn't you?

Speaker 2 (22:22):
I mean you?

Speaker 4 (22:22):
Plus I Hugh's hurt. He's less of a headache than
Tyreek Hill.

Speaker 2 (22:27):
Again low bar, but yeah, Saint Brown is really good.
AJ Brown's excellent. I mean I would take McLaurin over
DK Metcalf. I mean, Metcalf's also getting up there in age,
but huh.

Speaker 3 (22:38):
Metcalf was sort of the standard he was going for. Financially.
Metcalf's at thirty three. This new deal puts him at
thirty two, so he got right around the park.

Speaker 4 (22:45):
Yeah, hey, thirty two mil Yeah, enjoy.

Speaker 3 (22:48):
The Commanders have the eighth hardest schedule in the NFL
this year. That should probably be a factor two that
we discussed as we figure this out. But good news
out of camp this morning and those of us in DC,
we'll take it all right. We gotta move on to
your favorite quarterback. Yes, you know him, you love him,
just a few Aaron Rodgers. Earlier this offseason, he acknowledged

(23:11):
this might be his final NFL season, but you know,
little change over the weekend hasn't fully ruled out a
return to twenty twenty six. In an appearance on Cam
Heyward's podcast, DK Metcalf put his QB on the spot
when discussing not this season next season.

Speaker 4 (23:28):
Take a listen.

Speaker 8 (23:34):
I think we're gonna do some special things this year,
looking forward to it, and you know, maybe we can
run it back.

Speaker 2 (23:43):
Maybe did you see the delayed Yeah, he's like yeah maybe.

Speaker 3 (23:50):
I mean, you know, Aaron told Pat McAfee earlier this
summer that this was going to be his last ride.

Speaker 4 (23:55):
Do you take that more seriously? Do you take this
more seriously? Aaron's gotta get through this season seriously in general.
I mean, I mean, from.

Speaker 2 (24:03):
The the bashing of.

Speaker 4 (24:07):
Political folks to the darkness retreat to what like every
ex girlfriend said about him getting a badger on there.
I mean, I just can't take it seriously. I don't know. Plus,
he was a disappointment with my Jets.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
Yeah, but I'm sure they'll you know, they'll be plucky.
And I think the Jets come after him on opening
me like big tug, like heavy.

Speaker 4 (24:29):
I mean you saw his preseason.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
He's not moving, not like playing a preseason, but like
the snaps he's taken with the team.

Speaker 4 (24:34):
He's immobile. I think it come after him heavy and
uh lot payback for Aaron in Week one for my Jets.

Speaker 3 (24:42):
I mean, look, this conversation about next season might be
a moot point. I mean, I don't know how far
he's gonna last.

Speaker 4 (24:47):
This season's turning thirty two years old.

Speaker 3 (24:51):
And the idea by the way, you don't have any
forty two year old quarterbacks that played at least ten
games in one season.

Speaker 4 (24:56):
It's gotta be Tom Brady and Warren Moon.

Speaker 3 (24:59):
Maybe Tom Brady and Tom Brady. Oh Dad, that's it,
And you, sir, are no Tom Brady.

Speaker 4 (25:07):
That's hard. Okay, there we go.

Speaker 3 (25:09):
Let's talk about the Giants wrapping up their preseason and
despite great play from Jackson Dart, they will in fact
start Russell Wilson under center in Week one against the Commanders,
Whereuss officially the starter. There are big questions about whether
Dart lands in the depth chart, whether they're leaving him
the door open for him to come in in the
middle of the season. What do you think of the decision,
because you know, there's.

Speaker 4 (25:30):
A lot of Jackson Dart live in the New York area.

Speaker 2 (25:34):
Everybody loves shiny new things. He's brand new, you know.
He looks the part at the podium. One thing I
noticed Rachel early on, and you would go to these
press conference after me, he looks at the media member
and tries to like say their name. Sometimes he's really
forming that bond if you and they, you know.

Speaker 4 (25:51):
The media, we love that when they talk about us.

Speaker 2 (25:53):
Of course, So I think he's playing all his cards right.
And you know, if you have to say Jay, well
he start a game before Thanksgiving, I think you will look.

Speaker 3 (26:01):
First of all, no one is more popular on a
football team than the backup quarterback, So this is.

Speaker 4 (26:05):
Right in line.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
I think you have to start with Wilson because you
kind of can't go backward right if Wilson doesn't do
well enough, and the Giants have the toughest strength of
schedule in the NFL, so it is more likely than
not that there will be sputtering from that offense. Right,
then you can pull the vet for the younger kid.
But if you put the kid in first and he
has all of those problems, it is very hard to

(26:28):
mentally get Russell Wilson back from Hey, you.

Speaker 4 (26:31):
Went away from me.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
I was supposed to be the starter here in my
mind when I came in and you screwed me. So
now I'm going to come in and pick up this
kid's pieces. That is a much harder dynamic as a
coach to deal with. So I wasn't surprised at all
to see this news.

Speaker 2 (26:45):
So what let me ask you, though, Jamis Winston is
also very popular seems like he's already won over the
locker room.

Speaker 4 (26:53):
Who do you think starts as the backup?

Speaker 2 (26:54):
Because it might be Winston just for being a veteran,
you know, if something happens to Uss.

Speaker 4 (27:01):
Yeah, I don't think you're ready for Jackson Dart like
week one or two.

Speaker 3 (27:05):
No, it might be Winston because of exactly what you said.
But I think Jamis is more in there as sort
of a guy to bring the quarterback room together. That's
very popular with his teammates.

Speaker 4 (27:17):
He's a real.

Speaker 3 (27:17):
Leader in that whole group, and I think they see
him more in that role. It's almost like a vet
at the end of an NBA bench or something where
their future is obviously not Jameis Winston. So yes, he
might be number two on the depth chart. But I
would say that if Russell Wilson doesn't end up finishing
the season as the starter, you will see.

Speaker 4 (27:35):
Jackson Dart at some point.

Speaker 2 (27:36):
I mean, Rachel, look at that. So Chansas City's got
a really good defense. Bagnolo is excellent. Chargers defense should
be very very good. You get a respite with the Saints.
But Eagles Broncos Eagles, Yeah, that could be the two
best defenses in the NFL for three weeks in a row,
and then the Niners with Robert Sala, who by mid
season should be hitting his form. So yeah, I don't

(27:59):
feel great about I don't feel great about the Giants
despite their three and zero preseason, right.

Speaker 4 (28:03):
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3 (28:04):
I mean, look, the Giants had such a dismal season
last year that I think Giants fans out there are
just like, please, don't make me embarrassed to be alive
every week of the NFL season anymore.

Speaker 4 (28:15):
And I think they'll improve on their win total. How
could you not?

Speaker 11 (28:18):
Right?

Speaker 3 (28:19):
So the success for the Giants, fortunately, the bar for
them is low, and success for them could mean a
five or six win season.

Speaker 4 (28:27):
Does Brian Dables survive this season?

Speaker 3 (28:30):
I think that depends on the way that they win
or lose, right, because the strength of schedule, everyone realizes
how tough this is with this group. But I think
that it sort of depends on is it heartbreaking, you know,
close losses? Is it they just get completely you know,
fashed out, that kind of thing. I mean, the Giants
are returning ten of eleven starters on offense, and this

(28:52):
was an offense that could barely win a game last year.

Speaker 4 (28:55):
So and the only non returner Russ. I guess right,
oh wow.

Speaker 3 (28:58):
So I think that if they don't do well, you
got to look up a little higher and the first one.

Speaker 4 (29:04):
To go know how attractive? Did you hop? That is?
L All right, Rachel with the news.

Speaker 9 (29:08):
Yep, well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by
the Herd Line News.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
All right, Coming up, we head to Dallas. What's the
endgame for Micah Parsons and the Cowboys?

Speaker 4 (29:19):
That's next.

Speaker 9 (29:20):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon Easter not a Empacific.

Speaker 2 (29:27):
Back here on the Herd, Matt Mosley has covered the
Cowboys for decades and I'm sure he's seeing a contract
squabble or two. So let's bring him in to discuss
Micah versus Jerry. Matt Moseley, host of the Doomsday podcast Doomsday,
very apropos of this situation between Micah and Jerry.

Speaker 4 (29:48):
How you doing, Matt? How's it holding up covering this nonsense?
Can I call it that it is?

Speaker 12 (29:55):
And but when you since I came on with the
parcels in two thousand four, read so I have a
great running start to this nonsense, and so this too,
I think it's kind of shocking to some people, but
you know that this kind of but to me, this
one really goes hand in hand with this new documentary,

(30:17):
and I think that has I think Jerry has loved everything.

Speaker 11 (30:22):
That is going on with this.

Speaker 12 (30:23):
The only extrange thing about this, I've never seen Jerry
go quite as much on these like media tours as
he's on right now separate of the documentary, Like this
is a this is a man trying to win the
public over on a contract negotiation, and I've never really

(30:45):
seen him stooped to that. And it's not going to work.
It's not I mean, there's no like nobody, no cowboys.
Fans are suddenly going you know what, Mike is being
extremely selfish and we don't like mine. These fans, for
over thirty years now have had great practice at despising

(31:07):
this owner and learning to be angry at him at
all times. So Jerry is really wasting his time in
trying to get people because first of all, people sort
of understand how business works. And Jerry eliminating the agent,
trying to act like hey, we've already agreed to a deal.

Speaker 11 (31:28):
It's completely it's a very very.

Speaker 12 (31:31):
Strange process that We've watched play out and I've watched
a bunch of crazy ones. In fact, the night he
cut Quincy Carter, I ended up in a bar with
Jerry and he talked. We talked all into the evening.
That's the great it's the love hate thing with Jerry. Yes,
he's wild, but the greatest thing about him is like,

(31:54):
when something like this is happening, there's a chance we
may run into him at a bar and he'll tell
us everything. And there's almost never been an owner in
the history of sports like this.

Speaker 11 (32:05):
So it's it's the media.

Speaker 12 (32:08):
If you ever wonder like that they get tired of
Jerry that the answer is no, because he constantly is
helping us accessible. It's it's yeah, it's it'll well, we
never want him to step off the main stage.

Speaker 2 (32:24):
Yeah, So it's I totally forgot that. Jerry is on
a bit of a media tour. He was on that
show Billy Bob Thornton, the Texas Oil Show. I can't
remember the name of it now, but man Land Man, Yes,
excellent show, by the way, I highly recommended.

Speaker 4 (32:39):
So he was on there. Remember he had a little
spot and then he did some media around that.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
Then he's got the series now on Netflix, and now
he's got this contract squabble. So it's almost like Jerry
just wants to stay in the limelight. And it's less
about the Parsons deal, but it's more about, hey, hey,
talk to me, people, I'm here, talk to me. Is
that Do you get that vibe?

Speaker 11 (33:01):
Only for about forty years? Have I gotten that time? No?

Speaker 12 (33:06):
But he's constantly at the center of attention. And by
the way, go back and watch his performance in Landman,
I mean that was and that's why you know, people say, well,
Jerry's lost a step or like with these presidents that
we've had recently and we're looking at the lucidity of
certain people. I would always say, well, how would you

(33:29):
ever know with Jerry, like if he'd truly lost a step.
And when you watch this documentary, he's still such an
incredible storyteller.

Speaker 11 (33:38):
But he still has the belief.

Speaker 12 (33:41):
And that's why he invites these people to have sit
down interviews. That's why he went on with Michael Irvin
the other day because like he really really gets PR.
Let me tell you where he didn't get PR and
that's when he started the Cowboys.

Speaker 11 (33:56):
That was the biggest.

Speaker 12 (33:57):
PR blunder ever, and he'll never top that one. And
that was the firing of Tom Landry, and he got
really bad. And I could even remember her name. I
think she's still around. Lisa Lamaster was her name. She
was like a big time PR crisis management consultant, and
she convinced Jerry, you should go fire Tom Landry yourself,

(34:20):
the dumbest move he's ever made.

Speaker 11 (34:22):
He's told me that he's admitted that to me before.

Speaker 12 (34:25):
And bum Bright, the owner at the time, hated Tom
Landry and would have loved to go fire Tom Landry,
and Jerry thought it would be honorable to go do
it himself, and it blew up in his face and
it was horrible.

Speaker 11 (34:41):
And so it's interesting how Jerry has gone to extremely.

Speaker 12 (34:46):
Hated to he and Jimmy being beloved in the nineties,
and by the late nineties he's hated again because he
was again Jimmy and Jerry that was both their fault,
and I think kind of both of them would admit that,
but obviously to this day, fans believe that it was

(35:07):
Jerry mostly at fault in that divorce, and that was
probably one of the worst divorces in an fl history,
and It could have robbed Cowboys fans of at least
two more Super Bowls if those guys could have even
made it. You know, we see relationships j Mac like that,
we know are ill faded. That was one of them.

(35:30):
That was one of them. But if they could have
made it ten years, so they could have had five
of ten, they could have had five.

Speaker 11 (35:37):
They could have had five super Bowls.

Speaker 12 (35:38):
They only get two, right because he ran them off
and Switzer got the third one.

Speaker 4 (35:43):
Yes, good memory.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
Let me just quickly ask about this back mri so
Schottenheimer said it came back pretty clean, which is not
one hundred percent, but it sounds like it's close. So
then Mike has seen at the game laying down on
the table, and then he's, oh, well I got the
back injury.

Speaker 4 (36:00):
I'm just wondering, do.

Speaker 2 (36:01):
You foresee Micah here are the images of him lying down.
Do you see him saying, hey, my independent doctor says,
my back's not clear. I'm not risking it, sorry guys,
And then it gets really really ugly.

Speaker 4 (36:13):
Do you did we get there?

Speaker 11 (36:16):
That's interesting, I believe.

Speaker 12 (36:19):
And the team doctor for the Cowboys happens to be
a longtime friend of mine and he hasn't told me this,
but I believe that was one of the cleanest MRIs
in NFL history. And I believe some of this dig stuff,
the Trayvon Diggs and the I mean, I mean McLaurin
suddenly had an injury, right, He's like, no, he's gonna

(36:39):
have to sit out a couple of weeks. Oh, he
signed a three year, ninety six million dollars deal. Feeling better.
MRIs look good where things are looking clean. So Micah
did something embarrassing. And I like Micah, and I think
Micah is a very fun guy. He's an incredible player.

(36:59):
I do think he's savvy. That was beneath him what
he did the other night. And here's what he didn't
mean to do. He loves this new head coach, but
things like that undermined the head coach. And here's what
needs to happen in a situation like that. This would
have been what happened with Bill Parcells back in the day.

(37:20):
Somebody had to go tell him a Mike is sleeping
over on the table.

Speaker 11 (37:24):
And then and then shot.

Speaker 12 (37:26):
He could have gone over and said a word and
shown some toughness.

Speaker 11 (37:32):
But you can't have.

Speaker 12 (37:33):
That going on back there that whole thing was an embarrassment.
I've I've been involved in covering standoffs for years. One
was Bill Parcells and Larry Allen back in the day,
and Larry wasn't working out, mainly because he was kind
of out of shape that time in two thousand and three.
But I'll tell you that you talk about one of

(37:53):
the worst journalistic moments for me as a young reporter,
very young at the time, in my late when they
call me and go, Matt, we need you to go.
You're the only one that Larry Allen will talk to.
We need you to go over to his house. Now,
that's fun about eight o'clock on a Monday evening in

(38:14):
a summer, when he's refusing to show up for training,
to knock at Larry Allen's door and to have his
wife answer and say something along the lines, oh god,
they're sending reporters over here. I've never wanted out of
a neighborhood as quickly as that. Can you imagine Larry
Allen at three hundred and fifty pounds.

Speaker 11 (38:33):
So anyway, that did not help our relationship. That ended,
like a lot of my relationships do.

Speaker 4 (38:39):
Yeah, all right, last question, we got two minutes left.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
Is Michael Parsons on the field in Week one against
the Eagles?

Speaker 4 (38:48):
Yes, oh yes, I like it.

Speaker 11 (38:51):
Oh there's no And again you're right.

Speaker 12 (38:54):
They could come up with some sort of injury excuse
or something weird like that. But remember who Jerry is,
and remember how much he loves the pageantry and the
circus of all of this, and the last minute get
the deal signed is kind of a fun thing for him. Yeah,

(39:16):
Dak got one of his deals done the morning of
the first game CD and Zeke's were done four or
five days. Every one of these holdouts end in the
Cowboys capitulating, right, I mean, namey one that they've won, Like.

Speaker 11 (39:32):
Well, look at the Cowboys, they.

Speaker 12 (39:34):
Won this negotiation, Zeke, Zach, I mean every CD they
all end and the deals getting done.

Speaker 2 (39:43):
Just make sure, so, Matt, your headline on your website
when this happens podcast, big blaring Jerry blinks.

Speaker 4 (39:51):
You know, it needs to be that because like you said,
they always capitulate, right.

Speaker 11 (39:57):
They do.

Speaker 12 (39:57):
And you know, if you you would just send me
more headlines, I would I would appreciate it.

Speaker 11 (40:04):
I would make life easier on me.

Speaker 2 (40:06):
So Matt, Matt Moseley, the Man with the dooms Day Podcast.

Speaker 4 (40:10):
Great stuff has always met.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
Hey, man, you know when the Cowboys are five and eleven,
you'll be or five and twelve, you'll be right about
Shoddy getting shown the door. Can't wait to read those headlines.
I know, Amma Jets guy. He was a territory coordinator.

Speaker 12 (40:25):
When Kylein is not here, I just have a chance
to really expound and really open up about things.

Speaker 11 (40:30):
So I think I enjoyed. Yeah, we'll have to do
this more often, all.

Speaker 2 (40:35):
Right, man, have a great one. Matt Mosley dooms Day Podcast.
The guy's been around the block. Yeah, right, So I
like his stuff.

Speaker 4 (40:44):
He's got he's great.

Speaker 8 (40:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (40:45):
No, have you ever gone to the door of an
NFL player during negotiations?

Speaker 4 (40:49):
That's I have a door knocked anybody in a while.

Speaker 3 (40:51):
You're talking to someone who spent time on Brett Farv's
lawn during Packers negotiations. So yeah, I have been there.
Now I know his wife Dana pretty well, so you know,
we got cookies and stuff, so it was a little
bit different. Look the Jerry thing, I got to say,
even if he does end up signing there, even if
he does.

Speaker 4 (41:10):
He's going to have lost so much money like.

Speaker 3 (41:12):
That's what doesn't make sense for the Cowboys is if
they had given these guys extensions when they deserved over
the years, they wouldn't be out sixty million dollars fifty
million extra dollars.

Speaker 4 (41:22):
So always get it done early. Great point.

Speaker 2 (41:24):
All right, coming up, is it time to freak out
about the Bears offense?

Speaker 4 (41:28):
You know, Cowherd's nervous. That's next year on the hurt
