Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Here we go our two on a Friday. This poppy
is moving.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
We are live. It's the Herd.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
If you uh, Matt Hasselbeck's around the corner. Thought the
Cowboys played well last night. I thought after the rain delay, Philadelphia.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Made the bigger plays.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
But overall, you know, I always I always wonder about
like that Thursday night game. Is it speaking for the league.
Like a couple of years ago, Detroit beat Kansas City
and it was kind of our Oh Detroit's for real.
Remember they went I think it was in Kansas City
and it was like, oh, oh, Detroit's not just a fad.
(01:09):
Detroit's real. And I do think what last night told
us is Philadelphia is still going to be really emotional
with some drama. It was on display last night, and
dak with all the movement in Dallas. If he's healthy
and playing, They're going to be in a lot of games.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Totally agree.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
That's kind of my takeaway last night. All right, well,
you know a lot of people would not do a
blazing five to start the year because well, I'm terrible
in Week one, but it's too much fun. Let's have uh,
let's have a good five minutes here with my picks.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
I feel good, as I always do.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
I felt good every week last year that didn't mean anything,
and here we go with our opening blazing five.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Let's blaze it up, fired up, it's Collins blazon fuck
giants had come.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
I like the Giants plus six and a half. At
least one underdog of six plus points is one outright
in Week one. I think the Giants could be the play.
They played nine to one score games last year, and
both games against the Commanders were close. Brian Burns, Dexter
Lawrence abdul Carter. This is a top two or three
defensive line, and I mean, let's be honest, it's week one.
(02:22):
We saw what d Lins can do last night. Malik
neighbors matchup problem. Even with Dan Quinn back into the defense,
last year for Washington was a bit of a mess.
The Commanders great year, but they played twelve one score
games and their defense again was bad with a defensive coach.
So I think the debo Terry McLaurin thing is fascinating,
(02:45):
but I think it won't be perfect until later in
the season. This is a go either way game. I'll
take Washington to win, but six and a half. I'm
taking it with the Giants twenty seven to twenty three.
Commanders close, Steelers and Jets. I like the Jets plus
a field goal. This is the lowest over and under.
(03:06):
I'm gonna take the home dog plus the three points.
They held fourth quarter leads in six of their twelve losses.
Last year, the Jets were in games, and that's with
an old quarterback that couldn't extend plays.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Now they have a young quarterback that can.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
The Steelers had a lot of turnover left tackle gone,
quarterback gone, best receiver gone, best running back gone. With
a defensive culture, you think they're gonna look good in
Week one.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
I mean my.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Takeaway is is the wrong team getting points here? I
think the Jets rosters good and I've got a young
quarterback who played in Pittsburgh and knows their personnel and
by the way Aaron Rodgers with all these new parts
Week one, last three times Week one he started, He's
lost all of them and has not played well, and
(03:51):
he's not the most committed guy in the offseason. I
like the Jets here to win straight out twenty four
to twenty money line baby forty nine ers at Seahawks.
I like the Seahawks. You know, since Loomin Field opened
up in two thousand and two, Seattle's got the best
home winning percentage nine to one record at home week
(04:13):
one and by the way, six of their final eight
games last year after the buye they won. They needed
a buy for this new coaching staff, and they've upgraded
at coordinator. They're gonna run the ball, They're gonna speed
the game up. Gray Zabel, the draft pick, watched them
run the ball. Sam Darnold's and athletics upgrade at quarterback
and the Niners McCaffrey's banged up, Brandon Aiyuk's out, Greenlaw's gone,
(04:37):
who fungus gone? By the way, Niners were not great
against their division last year. They were one in five
in division and two and six on the road.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Last year.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
They were not a great road team or division team.
And the red zone defense. That's why they brought Sala in.
Was a bit of a mess. That was thirty first.
I liked the Seahawks and the points to win straight
out twenty four to twenty three.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Lions at Packers.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
I really like green Bay bet of the weekend, young
team entering their prime, added Micah Parsons. I like green
Bay here, only team in the league top five offense
and total defense. And by the way we think to ourselves,
you know, Jordan Love wasn't great last year. I went
and looked it up this morning. Final seven games last year,
nine touchdowns, no picks. He's fine. Lions lost both coordinators.
(05:25):
If they do replace them deftly, it'll probably be later
in the season. And Dan Campbell's not been a good
underdog coach twelve and twenty one and one as an
underdog head coach. When they got better players, they win.
When they're at home with better players, they win on
the road. Do they have better players than Green Bay?
I'm not sure. Jared Goff without McVeagh and Ben Johnson
(05:47):
never been quite as good. I like green Bay to
win outright twenty eight to twenty four.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Texans at Rams.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Take the under forty three and a half, nineteenth ranks
scoring offense Texans against the twentieth scoring offense.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Here's the truth about the Rams.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
Last year didn't have a great point differential even with Stafford.
Both teams come into the season with o line issues,
Stafford's backs an issue, left tackle Alaric Jackson blood Clotts
didn't practice a ton, and the Texans beat up on
their division. They were five and one against the AFC South.
They weren't great out of their division. They've got a
first time play colored offensive coordinator and a lot of
(06:28):
new faces on the offensive line. And I am here
to tell you the Rams defensive front is filthy and
getting better. I think it is a very low scoring game.
The over unders forty three and a half. It feels
like twenty seventeen or twenty one seventeen Rams to me,
probably at home. I give them the edge, but I'm
taking the under here. Take the under forty three and
(06:51):
a half. Jay McKinney thoughts on that, Love Love, love
the Jets pick. That's my favorite of your five outside
of the Packers, which I also have.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
But that forty nine Ers one. You didn't really mention
the Christian.
Speaker 5 (07:05):
McCaffrey missed practice yesterday, then the forty nine ers did
not make him available to the media. I have him
in multiple fantasy leagues and I'm sweating bad.
Speaker 6 (07:15):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
I feel so terrible for you.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Thanks, friend, You need to go into every weekend with
a little humility, rock perty taken.
Speaker 5 (07:24):
Over that game and winning on the road, beating your guy,
he would deserve credit. That's not tough. No iyuk And
if McCaffrey even.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Khim told me a week ago, I said, where did
you hate going when you were the GM Arizona. He
goes Seattle. He goes that is a rough place to play.
He goes that crowd lubricates, they're ready to roll. And
with that, Matt Hasselbeck is now joining us live eighteen
years in the NFL. So, Matt, I watched Dak Prescott
(07:52):
last night, and I've been a critic. I thought he
was really good. I thought Dak was I was just like, man, listen,
see d He's dropping it. He's not getting worked up,
he's not mad. He was stoic. You got, Brian Schottenheimer.
I don't know your takeaway on Dak. I was really impressed.
Speaker 7 (08:11):
I'm glad you brought it up.
Speaker 6 (08:12):
I completely agree with a lot of hate going to
Dak for years and years. I thought last night he
looked great coming off of the injury.
Speaker 7 (08:19):
I thought he looked fit. I thought he looked quick.
You know, he said he felt slow. He didn't look slow.
He looked like a guy that was in command, in control, and.
Speaker 6 (08:28):
Honestly, like with the loss of Micah Parsons on defense,
like leaders got to step up, Like you really step up.
You're not just the leader because you make all the
money or you're the quarterback. You're a leader by the
things that you do with like no one really watches
or no one really notices, like the camera multiple times
last night, he's going up and down the sidelines, tapping
up each one of his teammates, like the whole night
(08:49):
like reminded me of like what Bill Russell was like
when he was on the Celtics. He was very captain
like of him at all times, keeping us engaged like
he was. He came for the fight, and I don't
think we've seen that at a.
Speaker 7 (09:01):
Dack this way, not quite this way. I was impressed.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Yeah, you know, I think it's something I don't want
to be hyperbolic. Here. But I remember years ago Randy
Moss Brady go to play the Dolphins on Monday night
and they targeted Randy Moss one time, and I sat
on the air, I worked at another company. I said, okay,
if you're only targeted Randy Moss once, he not long
for New England. He got traded. A few days later.
AJ Brown was invisible. Now Dallas Goddard's good. Barkley, I
(09:30):
don't know. I gotta be honest about that, Matt. That
doesn't smell right to me.
Speaker 6 (09:35):
Your thoughts, Yeah, I think last year they had a
slow you know, they started out slow figuring out how
to use Saquon Barkley. They've got a new coordinator, and
sometimes you can kind of get lost in the forest
on your call sheet and they get that big, giant
call sheet and you're thinking, like, okay, Eberflues he's in
zone ninety percent of the time, he's in too high.
Like you just kind of get lost with it and
(09:55):
you're really focused on winning the game. And sometimes what
can happen is you can forget that star receivers.
Speaker 7 (10:00):
Not getting the ball.
Speaker 6 (10:01):
Like I remember Mike Congrin on his call sheet, he
would have like a whole section. I see it on
Andy Reid's He's his you know, just as big, the
whole whole section for like, get this guy touches. And
you saw that they tried to do it kind of late,
but I think it's important. You know, I was teammates
with Jerry Rice at the end of his career. I mean,
he's forty years old. He's Jerry Rice, though, you know,
and he would come to me like during TV timeouts
(10:23):
stuff like that, and he'd like grab my arm and
be like, hey, man, like I would love to feel
a part of this game. I would love to feel
a part of this game. And as a quarterback and
as a play caller. I do think that that's an
important thing. When you have a star receiver outside, you
got to you got to include him.
Speaker 7 (10:38):
And I thought AJ Brown was included.
Speaker 6 (10:40):
In other ways, blocking and all that kind of stuff,
but you got to be more intentional.
Speaker 7 (10:45):
About making it happen.
Speaker 6 (10:47):
I think they get it fixed, but clearly that was
a miss last night.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
By the way, the rain delay was weird. I thought
it benefited Philadelphia. I feel I said, like, you're the
road team. It's already a pain in the butt to
play on the road, it's a big rivalry game. Then
you have a rain delay after halftime. I did think
Philadelphia post delay felt a little different.
Speaker 6 (11:06):
Did you, Yeah, one hundred percent. I mean a team
that's been there, you know.
Speaker 7 (11:10):
I think on the broadcast they did a good job.
Speaker 6 (11:12):
It'll probably feel like a really really long halftime at
a super Bowl. Obviously, the Eagles are just coming off
of a super Bowl. Dallas hasn't been you know, so like,
you know, I remember my Super Bowl the Rolling Stones
played and we were told, hey, they're it's gonna be
longer than normal. Well they played even longer than they
were supposed to play, and like there is something too,
just like you know, so what now what?
Speaker 7 (11:33):
You know, that's the mindset, So what now what? And
I think, like a Nick.
Speaker 6 (11:36):
Sirianni, been there, done eight team, been together as a
you know, as a group. Hey so what now what? Yeah, okay,
lightning delay? So what like here we go? And I think,
uh yeah, I think the advantage if you're gonna give one,
go to Philly.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
So generally, I like offensive coaches and good quarterbacks. In September,
I think most coaches are obsessed, to begin with, offensive
guys are designing stuff and McVeigh or Andy Reid or
you know, any of these offensive guys. They're gonna have
some tricks Sean Payton that you haven't seen. So I
(12:10):
would think Joe Burrow and Zach Taylor would be good early,
and they have struggled. I'm looking the last three regular
seasons Weeks one and two, Burrow's oz and six, Week
three on they win seventy percent of their games. Can
you just decipher it, decode it. Why do you think
Burrow and Zach struggle early?
Speaker 6 (12:31):
Well, you know, I'm not sure how much work Burrow
had been getting in the preseason and even training camp
in like the last three years, but it's been different
this year. You can tell that this is a point
of emphasis emphasis for them. He's playing more, you know,
when teams are resting their starters, he and Jamar Chas
are out there. You know, light in the league up
in the preseason. But you know, to me, I think
(12:51):
it's more than just a quarterback situation.
Speaker 7 (12:53):
How you do training camp is important.
Speaker 6 (12:56):
You know, sometimes week one the quarterbacks are the coaches
that are so good game planning and studying, you they
struggle week one because it's more of a blind date.
Speaker 7 (13:05):
You know, I would put Zach Taylor.
Speaker 6 (13:06):
I don't know if he gets the reputation or not,
but he's very much like Sean McVay to me, like
where he knows the scheme, he knows how to get
the one on one and so like that's the thing.
But the other thing to me week one is like,
what kind of training camp did you have who's really
good at tackling defensively? And I think that's just one
of the new things here with the offseason being how
it is, the amount of preseason games that have been
(13:28):
taken away. You know, we got guys that haven't had
to tackle live and really been tested, haven't been exposed,
and you know, sometimes those guys get exposed week one.
And you know, Cincinnati doesn't stick out to me as
a great tackling team in the last few years, So
you know, I think there's a lot of factors that
might go into it.
Speaker 7 (13:46):
But I'm a believer in Joe Burrow all the way.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
Yeah, that's a really good point about the tackling. So
I'm not a big fan of games in Brazil, London, Germany,
Mexico City. I think it's a big ass for players.
This game is so hard on players. I mean, Brazil
feels like, you know, what is the flight fifteen hours?
I don't like it. You tell me your thoughts on
it as a player? Is it discomforting?
Speaker 7 (14:11):
Like?
Speaker 3 (14:11):
Where do you land on that game? Chargers Chiefs tonight?
Speaker 6 (14:14):
Well, my first NFL game I was with the Packers.
We played against the Chiefs in Tokyo in the Tokyo Dome.
I got blown up right around second base and sprained
my tailbone. So I got a bad memory from that game.
But you know, playing surfaces I think a big thing.
I've been down to Mexico City seeing ironically, I think
it was the Chiefs and Raiders play a game down there.
It was a very slick surface. I think it's hard
(14:34):
on the players. I think it's hard, hard on everybody,
you know. I was just in Kansas City and talking
to their equipment equipment manager Alan Wright.
Speaker 7 (14:41):
You know, they had to ship everything out a week before, so.
Speaker 6 (14:45):
There's almost like two sets of equipment minus things like
your helmet.
Speaker 7 (14:49):
So it's a grind.
Speaker 6 (14:50):
But for the teams that have done it and have
like a veteran group doing it, I think it gives
them a little bit of an edge. It is a
little bit of a circus and a little bit of
a show. But I think the Chiefs, again, they're just
used to it. Like everything they do is breaking news,
whether it's in the sports world or outside the sports world.
They seem to kind of like water up for ducks back,
(15:10):
you know, like they're just like, yeah, here we go.
Speaker 7 (15:12):
And I will say this, I think.
Speaker 6 (15:13):
A lot of people, including you, Colin, are sleeping on
this Chiefs team.
Speaker 7 (15:18):
I think this is the most talented team they've had
in a long time.
Speaker 6 (15:21):
And I think that you're going to see a Travis
Kelce and a you know, a group around Travis Kelce
like really finished strong. They realize how special this year
could be if it is, in fact his last year.
So I'm a believer in the Chiefs this year.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
So when you get a new player like Micah Parsons
and you've got a very strong culture in Green Bay,
which you know, like Dallas's defense was fine without him,
I think we all think he's gonna go and get
six sacks again. You know, Oh, Mike is going to
change it. But this is a well coached team. What
kind of impact do you think he could have against
(15:57):
Detroit week one, or does it when you get new
players late?
Speaker 3 (16:01):
I mean, just happened? What do you expect from Micah?
Speaker 7 (16:05):
Yeah, it's real.
Speaker 6 (16:06):
Well, listen, they're gonna have a small package for him
on third down. Jeff Affley does a really good job
on third down designing scheme, like you know, singling him up.
And I promise you it's a pain in the butt
for the opponent to wonder where he's gonna be. How
many snaps is he gonna play? Are we dedicating to
linemen or alignment and a tight end alignment and a
(16:26):
running back? Are we dedicating those resources to him? And
then he's not even on the field, Like it's you'd
almost rather know without a shadow of a doubt, like
a Max Crosby, like, yeah, he's gonna be there.
Speaker 7 (16:38):
At least we know what we're up against.
Speaker 6 (16:40):
This is a little bit unsettling because hey, are they
going to use him mostly on first and second down?
Are they going to use him only on third down?
Or they gon to use them in special situations? How
much of the defense can he grasp? I think you
can guess at it, but it's a lot tougher And
so I.
Speaker 7 (16:54):
Do think, like as a as a pass rusher type guy.
Speaker 6 (16:58):
Even if he played fifteen snaps and it came away
with two pressures in a sack and a half, like,
that's a win Week one.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
Finally, you know Seattle, Well, I like them against the Niners.
And one of the reasons I like them is if
you go to this coaching staff after the bye, I'm
a big believer when Brady goes to Tampa. They were
seven and five at the bye, and now I can
sit down with Bruce arians and say, listen, I need
to shorten up some routes. The NFL season, you're on
a treadmill. The bye gives new people a chance. It's
(17:31):
like almost, it's like really to work on stuff. So
when I look at McDonald and the Seahawks last year
after the bye, it was like, Okay, they really needed that.
They were a different team. I think they're going to
surprise people. Where are you on Seattle? Final question going
into the weekend where they're very good at home against
the Niners.
Speaker 6 (17:52):
Well, brock Perdy doesn't seem phase to go into Seattle.
That's one thing that's very unique. You know you had
mentioned when I first jumped on people don't like to
go see Seattle. Brock Perty doesn't seem to care Mike McDonald, though,
I think he's been pretty great, Like I think he's
been underrated. Ten win team last year, you know, top
ten defense, and think about how they started out last year.
(18:12):
I think they had like an interception in two safeties
to like start the first half or something crazy last year.
So that's not the identity that he's looking for. He's
looking for an offense that's going to be run the ball,
play action centric, basically, don't screw it up for my defense.
I am so confident in what I'm going to be
on defense. You know, think Baltimore Ravens a little bit
(18:33):
like Control back in the day, control the ball, played
great defense.
Speaker 7 (18:36):
I think that's the image that he has.
Speaker 6 (18:38):
And now with this injury news about Christian McCaffrey not
coming out, I think the Seahawks win this division. This
was the game that I thought, you know, this might
be the toughest game on their season, just because it's
a new collection of people, Sam Donald, all the receivers
are going, you know.
Speaker 7 (18:51):
All that stuff. But now I'm buying Seattle this year.
Speaker 6 (18:54):
I like I'm a lot in this division, and you
know that home field advantage, you know, they it's an
important thing to have, you know. I sometimes a lot
of red shows up in Seattle, and it'd be nice
if seat fans didn't let that happen.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
All right, Great seeing you, Matt hassel Back putting them
on a Friday. Appreciate it about as always. Okay, see
them all right, big one tonight. I'm staying away Chargers
and the Chiefs. Well, if you forced to, who would
you take Chiefs?
Speaker 5 (19:23):
I mean, I'm not going against Andy Reid and Patrick
Mahomes to start the season. And by the way, some
people have dug into the Chargers numbers last year. Listen,
I know it's like Herbert twenty three touchdowns. I think
we four interceptions. If you look at who he did
it against, it was a lot of bad teams. And
I know it's a hey, you gotta you can only
play who's in front of you. Fine, but I can
also ding you that's gonna come back for the Tampa
(19:46):
Bay Buccaneers. We talked about who they faced last year.
They faced like almost the most backup quarterbacks in the league. Yeah,
they got fat and happy off bad teams. So I'm
a little down on the Chargers compared to where I
was in like July.
Speaker 4 (19:58):
Remember they lost Slater on the offensive line. Then that's
not easy the.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
Way Beckton, They've got issues there. He's all he may
not plot out.
Speaker 7 (20:06):
Is he off?
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Is he out? He's He's go either way.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
So they got that.
Speaker 5 (20:11):
Nolo is one of the best in the business dialing
uplits is. It's a tall order for the chargers. He's
got an illness. Okayme boy one more heard.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
Oh, it is great to have you in Eric Mangini's
by don't forget jamaxx picks tomorrow's headlines today. If I recall,
it's all very fuzzy, all very blurry to me. But
he I think he narrowly edged me in winning percentage
last year. Narrowly that's the word that came to mind.
(21:18):
Jmack with the news.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
Turn on the news.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
This is the Herdline News.
Speaker 5 (21:25):
All right, let's rock and roll with your Chicago Bears.
You can't stop talking about Caleb Williams, at least for
the first month of the season. Obviously the rookie year
was not great. But now he gets Ben Johnson speaking
to the Athletic How about this one? Peyton Manning says
the Bears drafted Caleb Williams without a plan, comparing.
Speaker 4 (21:45):
It to a young couple thinking about a baby.
Speaker 5 (21:47):
If you're not sure, you're not ready, just don't do
it right, pivoting to Ben Johnson's a pretty big upgrade
obviously from what they had last year.
Speaker 4 (21:56):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (21:57):
Do you think it's going to be an easy learning
curve to get Caleb.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
Back on track? Because we're talking about two years down.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
I think he will be Caleb will be the best
version of Caleb what that is, maybe a notch below
Jaden Daniels. But I think if he just becomes listen,
this is a franchise. If he could throw it for
four thousand yards, it will be the first time it's
ever happened to the Bears at quarterback. But what if
four thousand yards mean that means you're productive. I don't
(22:25):
worry about his production. Actually, what I worry about is
getting rid of the ball. If you told me his
production wasn't that much greater this year than last, but
he cut his sacks in half. The dude was getting hammered.
He was physically under duress. And this is something that
is that is something that I think is correctable and coachable.
(22:47):
But there are guys that hold on the ball too long.
And I you know, I said this about Zach Wilson.
Does he see the field? I like justin Field's athleticism
sometimes upset. Does he see the field? That's a term.
So Caleb, when you're holding the ball, do you know
the I think I looked at it the other day.
The average NFL quarterback gets two point sixty five seconds.
Speaker 4 (23:10):
I think that's the number something in the two set.
Speaker 3 (23:12):
Just think about this, go.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
Out, Okay, Like Dak Prescott in the second half last night,
there was somebody in his face or he was moving
on virtually. It seemed like every big throw so and
Dak was accurate. So that's the thing you can't a
lot of this sport is see it and let it rip.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
And he just didn't.
Speaker 5 (23:37):
I just again, I asked about Archsbanning before his first game.
Do we know if he's good? We didn't know, and
now we kind of know this. Well, wait, hold on,
can Caleb Williams do that? Can he process, read and
react in two seconds?
Speaker 3 (23:51):
We'll see. I don't know if he can. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (23:54):
We'll find out.
Speaker 5 (23:54):
Yeah, because we know he can run around for his
life and makes him whacky plays off script.
Speaker 4 (23:59):
Sure not sustainable in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Now it's not.
Speaker 4 (24:02):
And this is a tall order against Brian Flores.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
And the division's really good.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
At home Monday night play. I like Minnesota in the
game close. That was my You know, I always bring
in six picks and then I leave one on the
cutting room.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
You go against your bears. Now you're like mister Chicago.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
Well journalism, there's no favoritism. Minnesota is a very nice state.
Speaker 5 (24:22):
Let's go to Colins second Verity, very nice.
Speaker 4 (24:25):
The LA Rams.
Speaker 5 (24:26):
They enter the season with Super Bowl aspirations, losing to
the Eagles last year in a great game in the playoffs,
McVeigh talked about how great it would be to win
the Super Bowl in the forty nine Ers Stadium, since
the stadium features a tribute to his father, John McVeigh.
I was unaware that that's pretty cool. The Rams are
plus two hundred to win the NFC West, plus twenty
(24:48):
two hundred to win the Super.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
Bowl Houston out of division. They get a lot of
those wins. I mean wins are wins, but going and
beating Stafford and McVeigh and LA and the season. Now,
Demiko Ryans dials it up.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
Man.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
He is the Rams old line is unsettled. So Demiko
is a handful.
Speaker 5 (25:06):
We know Matthew Stafford can read and react, we know
he could process with the best of them.
Speaker 4 (25:10):
I'm just gonna ask this about c J. Stroud.
Speaker 5 (25:12):
I'm not criticizing him, although when you say that, you're
criticizing what happens if he fails miserably behind a rebuilt
offensive line against He won't fail miserably.
Speaker 3 (25:23):
He's too he's too good. He's not gonna fail miserable.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
What happened last year?
Speaker 1 (25:27):
He got to the playoffs and won a playoff game.
That's what happened last year.
Speaker 4 (25:30):
No, no, no. J.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
Shroud won a playoff game justin with a battle line
than the playoff game. Nobody's given. Nobody's given anybody anything.
Philadelphia won the game last night. They grabbed the game
and they won it.
Speaker 5 (25:42):
C J.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
Stroud is way too good. I've seen enough.
Speaker 5 (25:45):
C J.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
Stroud is a pro Bowl level course. Who you're taking?
Speaker 4 (25:48):
C J Strowder Jalen Hurts?
Speaker 3 (25:51):
I like them both.
Speaker 4 (25:52):
That's not an answer.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
Cake or ice cream? Why can't I have him together?
Because you need to pick Whatton.
Speaker 3 (25:58):
I'm not playing your hypothetical.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
I'm not.
Speaker 5 (26:00):
I'm not running that choice and that who's winning tonight?
Seezir or Chargers. You got to pick a pick if.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
I gave you.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
I like him both. I like CJ better from the pocket.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
I think there is a strength and mobility advantage to
Jalen Hurts. I like them both a lot. Stroud, Dude,
Stroud spins as good a ball as almost anybody in
the league. That pubby comes out fast and accurate, moving left,
moving up, he throws a beautiful ball.
Speaker 5 (26:28):
You know what that answer was, But that was you
throwing your hat in the ring to be president of
this country in twenty twenty.
Speaker 4 (26:34):
Spoken like a true politician. I love them.
Speaker 3 (26:36):
You're not gonna get me to bang on. CJ.
Speaker 1 (26:39):
Don't have that organization was a embarrassment.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
That's a fact.
Speaker 1 (26:44):
It was arguably the most embarrassing in net franchise in
the league.
Speaker 5 (26:50):
C J.
Speaker 3 (26:50):
Stroud shows up and you're like.
Speaker 4 (26:52):
Oh, well, Antimiko ryans too.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
You know, Jimiko's terrific.
Speaker 4 (26:56):
I'm not asking you to bang like.
Speaker 5 (26:58):
Stroud is good, but his drop off from rookie year
to second year was a little alarming.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
His three best receivers didn't play most.
Speaker 4 (27:05):
Also true Diggs left.
Speaker 1 (27:06):
Yeah, yeah, I mean if you left, the show would
never be the same, you know. Just you gotta have
your weapons, gotta have your weaponry.
Speaker 4 (27:12):
Are the executives up? Oh they are here. They heard
that awesome. Okay, final story Colin.
Speaker 5 (27:17):
Obviously, ahead of this weekend slate, there's been a lot
of surveys and polls.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
You love a good poll. I love them.
Speaker 5 (27:22):
The latest comes from a survey of NFL agents who
have broken down the league's most unstable franchises.
Speaker 4 (27:30):
I don't know if you could guess.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
Them, but I'm gonna go ahead and tell you.
Speaker 4 (27:32):
It's the Cowboys and the Bengals came away with the
most votes.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
And guess what.
Speaker 5 (27:36):
Micah Parsons is now chiming in on the difference between
the Packers locker room.
Speaker 4 (27:40):
I want to hear this and the Cowboys locker room.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
Here we go.
Speaker 9 (27:44):
I came in tuesday for treatment and I saw almost
every guy in the locker room. I said, this is
the first time I've ever seen this. They did say
this because there ain't nothing else to do. But there's
other things you can do. But they just want to
be around each other, hang out. And that's important to
having guys that want to come into the building, like
guys that want to come in the doing and they
(28:05):
want to be here. I think that's important. And when
you're around guys like that, it makes it exciting to come.
Speaker 5 (28:09):
To work interesting, nothing else to do? And was does
he not know about Dell's in Wisconsin?
Speaker 1 (28:15):
You mean the big shopping mall the Dell's. I think
it was a not so subtle shot. Well they took it.
Speaker 5 (28:22):
I mean, they basically handed ESPN the big story hit
job on Micah this week. All that negative stuff in
that story, he's coming back and firing.
Speaker 3 (28:29):
Huh.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
For the record, Micah wasn't the greatest weight room addict.
I've heard that. That's a story that I mean, listen.
One of the reasons I didn't go too crazy on
the ESPN story, and I totally respected the reporters. Obviously,
these guys are pros, Jeremy foul and Wickersham, they're all great.
But I've had this happen in my career whenever there's
(28:51):
a big tray, Jerry started going and talking defending it,
and they start feeding stuff. I Micah has a couple
of issues I don't love, but he's not a quarterback
and I'm not going to judge pass rusher guy like
I'm gonna judge head coach GM and quarterback. The bottom line,
Packer's got a really good player, really good player who
creates a lot of hurries and disruptions, and Dallas needs picks.
(29:15):
So my take was Dallas has four first round picks
in the next two years. For the first time in
three years, Dallas will have flexibility. Their pass rush last
night decent. Neither pass rush was great, but was decent.
They're fine. I don't like the you know, Mike a
bad guy? Suddenly Mikes. I listened to ten of his podcasts.
(29:36):
I never once thought he's deceptive. He's a bad guy.
He can be a little chatty in times. I wouldn't
like him to be chatty, but Mike is fun.
Speaker 5 (29:46):
I just paid non quarterback in the league, and you've
listened to ten of his podcasts.
Speaker 1 (29:50):
I own a small but very successful podcast, not a
fledgling podcast. Yes, I'm just obnoxious today all day.
Speaker 3 (29:59):
Jmack with a news.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
heard line news.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Hold on, Okay, I don't I try to staff my phone.
But when somebody you know sends a little message Christian
McCaffrey thing, keep your eyes on that JMC Christian McCaffrey.
Speaker 5 (30:19):
Yeah, NFL network saying like, let's calm down, it's not
Defcon one. No, no, no, that doesn't mean the fact that
McCaffrey did not meet with the media tells me like
maybe he's ticked off and upset.
Speaker 7 (30:32):
That's all.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
But I'm just reading, so forget rock Perty have you
and we know, we all know Kyle Shanahan's great. Have
you seen Kyle Shanahan's record in San Francisco without Christian McCaffrey,
it's a losing record. Kyle Shanahan, so he is the
heartbeat quarterbacks. Perty's fine. McCaffrey is the engine here. I've
told you before. If you take out Walter Payton, he
(30:56):
is on a short list with Barry Sanders, Adrian Peter.
I mean, there's a handful. McCaffrey to me is not
Walter Payton. He's on a short list of the second
best running back I've ever seen due his pass catching skills.
If he just came into the league as a slot receiver,
he'd be a pro bowler. He is an unbelievable player.
I mean, and by the way, he's a chess piece.
(31:16):
And so, by the way, what does Shanahan love? That's
why getting rid of Debo was tough. Deebo was a
chess piece. Josh McDaniels, late, Aaron Hernandez, they used to
always talk in New England. It's unbelievable chess piece there
are not many guys like this, and over the course
of an NFL season, annually you may have three or
four guys max that you can use like this guy,
(31:41):
top back, top slot, motion decoy. Defensive coaches don't know
quite what to do with him, Guys like Shanahan using
this piece.
Speaker 5 (31:51):
It's and listen, I'm just gonna I don't want you
to indict Perdy if they lose thirty to thirteen because
he didn't get it done without his star running back,
without a yuk. What's the wide receiver room Ricky Piersoll
and Juwan Jennings. If he can go Brian Robinson, they
just traded for him like two weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (32:10):
Well, if he wasn't making fifty five million, maybe they'd
have another receiver on the roster.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
Just the thought. We're live, It's the Herd.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noone Eastern, non a em Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 5 (32:28):
The NFL regular season kicks off on Fox this Sunday
as the Giants take on reigning offensive Rookie of the
Year Jaden Daniels and the Commanders or the Niners take
on the Seahawks or other regional action.
Speaker 4 (32:43):
The NFL is back Sunday on Fox.
Speaker 1 (32:46):
So we were talking about AJ Brown got one target
last night. I think certain things can be valuable, but
they're more of a luxury. A nice watch is a luxury.
I know what time it is based on my phone.
I think you can some people like watches, go for it.
I haven't own one in thirty years. I'm not anti watch.
They're a luxury.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
I don't need it.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
And I think the same with wide receivers. So AJ
Brown didn't get looked at. Here's Nick Sirianni, Eagles coach,
discussing that.
Speaker 10 (33:16):
When we talk about roles, you know, I tell those
guys there's gonna be games like this.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
This is going this is going to happen.
Speaker 10 (33:23):
But to be what we want to be, you know,
Aj is obviously going to have to be involved more
in the offense. But you know, some games go this way.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
So, by the way, the three best teams most people
believe in the AFC are the Ravens, the Chiefs, and
the Bills. You know what, none of them have a
great receiving corps. You know who really drafted and developed
receivers better than anybody the last twenty years.
Speaker 3 (33:48):
The Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 1 (33:49):
You know who had one deep threat during a twenty
year dynasty, New England, and it was the time with
Randy Moss. They didn't win Super Bowls. I think what
happens when you get a dominant personnel and a dominant receiver,
you feel you have to get him the ball because
they're so temperamental. It's like having somebody in the family
that's very emotional. Everybody walks on eggshells all the time.
(34:10):
That's what I feel it's like when you have a
highly emotional wide receiver, especially unless you have a very
strong personality at quarterback. So you know it's even I
mean Andy Reid Know's offense he had Tyreek Hill. He's like, yeah,
I'll take unknown draft picks over Tyreek Hill.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
What does that tell you? What does that tell you?
Speaker 1 (34:33):
Also, Puka Nakua fifth round you can get I mean
Jennings for the Niners. Think is he sixth or seventh
round wide receiver of all the positions the last twenty
years is the biggest first round bust of any position?
Speaker 3 (34:50):
Did you know that?
Speaker 7 (34:50):
Now?
Speaker 1 (34:50):
I have a belief that it's an ego position, and
when you draft him in the first round, you're feeding
the ego. Get your receivers in the third, fourth, fifth,
sixth rounds. Cooper Cup was great for seven eight years.
He was a third round guy. Rams have lived off
guys that don't go pooka fifth round Cooper third round.
So I am a believer and it's an ego position.
(35:14):
Try to draft it out of the first round. Get
your quarterbacks, you know, get your offensive your left tackles,
you know, get your interior, great defensive linemen. Uh, there
are positions, great linebackers, edge rushers. A lot of them
are first round. I take receivers later. There are some exceptions.
Calvin Johnson, coming out of college at the time, was
(35:34):
the best college prospect receiver I'd ever seen. Randy Moss
was insane. But I think, you know, like when people
say the Niners face the Seahawks, and the Niners, oh boy,
their receivers are banged up, That's not what I worry
about with the I worry about the Niners secondary. I
worry about if Bosa gets banged up. I don't trust
their D line, and I worry about McCaffrey's help. I
(35:57):
don't worry about the wide receivers. I don't think they're
that value. I think the Niners, I would argue, have
overdrafted an overpaid wide receiver. That's one of my criticisms
of John Lynch and Kyle I think they overdraft an
overpay the wide receiver position. George Kittle is your best receiver.
I'd argue your second best receiver is Christiaan McCaffrey. Those
(36:17):
guys I trust catching the football. Your receivers egos injuries,
I don't trust them. So now tonight the Chargers are
I guess the home team against Kansas City.
Speaker 3 (36:29):
It's in Brazil.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
It's a stay away game for me, and Kansas City
is another great example of this. They moved off Tyreek Hill,
went back to back Super Bowls. Now they drafted last year.
They went and got a kid out of Texas late
first round.
Speaker 3 (36:41):
It was worthy.
Speaker 1 (36:42):
I think he's more of a gadget guy than number
one guy. So I think they'll miss Rashid Rice in
the first six games. But Matt Hasselbeck is on the
Chiefs train tonight.
Speaker 6 (36:52):
A lot of people, including you, Colin, are sleeping on
this Chiefs team. I think this is the most talented
team they've had in a long time. And I think
think that you're going to see a Travis Kelce and
a you know, a group around Travis Kelce like really
finished strong. They realize how special this year could be
if it is in fact his last year.
Speaker 7 (37:12):
So I'm a believer in the Chiefs this year.
Speaker 1 (37:15):
Yeah, And we said this earlier. The Dynasties tend to
have an entrepreneurial feel to them where they can find
profits where other people can't. And Kansas City has got
sort of that built in confidence. We were talking as
the staff this morning. It's they remind me the Warriors
who won that last title against the Celtics, and Boston
would probably had more athletes in their prime and may
(37:35):
have had a better roster, but Boston had not been
there before. And Golden State goes into Boston and Andrew
Wiggins and Hudo has been a bit of a disappointment
and Draymon and Steph Curry and they come out and
they win. They play their best game in the playoffs
and they beat them, and you're like, how's Golden State
winning this championship. They don't have any size you know,
guys are out of their prime, kd left and it's
(37:59):
just co ing and leadership and gyle and Kansas City's
got that layers of it, so they're a playoff team.
I do think the division is much tougher if you
go look. I said this Lebron James, now he was
out of his prime. But when you go West, everything's better.
The gms are better, the coaches are better in the West,
(38:21):
the players, the rosters, everything's better in the West compared
to the East. And I think if you start looking
at most dinas. When Nick Saban came to the sec
LSU had less miles. Georgia couldn't get the coach figured out,
Ole Miss didn't have Lane Kiffen. The entire Texas wasn't
in there yet. When Nick Saban was dominating, some of
(38:44):
the reasons he dominated Tennessee was dysfunctional is that he
was getting a lot of wins over powerhouses who didn't
have their act together. And then Georgia, Georgia gets Kirby
smart Oh and here comes Sark and Texas Saban didn't
look as good.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
He didn't get any dumber. Nick Saban didn't forget football.
Speaker 1 (39:03):
You know, the minute Josh Allen arrived in the AFC East.
Belichick and Brady didn't feel quite quite feel the same, right,
And Tom's like, I'm off to Tampa. So I just
think their division is too good, and that means you're
not going to have the best record. That means you're
gonna go on the road in the playoffs. Tom Brady
(39:25):
played forty one playoff games, eight on the road, and
Kansas City's getting a lot of buys and a lot
of home playoff games. And let's face it, the last
thing you want to face when you face Kansas City
is a comfortable team playing at home and crappy Kansas
City January weather. So you want him in a dome,
you want him at their place, your place. So I
(39:46):
think they're gonna be very good. I think they'll make
the playoffs, but I think the division, Jay, I think
you and I actually agree on this. You like Kansas
City tonight. I like the Chargers. But there is some
big bend for years, Brown's two and zero, Bengal two
and zero. Then Joe Burrow arrives and the Browns and
you start looking. You're starting split games, and you're not
(40:06):
playing at home as much, and you know Big Ben
down the end Steelers down the end and get quite
as comfortable seatings.
Speaker 5 (40:14):
Interesting, It's I like the I like everything about the Chargers.
The coaching staff is great, the quarterbacks outside OHO line though, Oh,
line's a question.
Speaker 1 (40:22):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (40:23):
I still think the wide receiver room.
Speaker 5 (40:24):
I know they drafted the young kid, they brought back
Quintin Johnston, they brought back Keenan Allen, Like, oh, they're
I don't think the wide receiver room is great?
Speaker 3 (40:33):
When is?
Speaker 1 (40:34):
It's funny? And I think Kansas City's beating the Chargers
what It's usually close, but I usually win the game
seven straight. Doesn't it feel when's the last time you
went into a season and you felt great about the
Chargers O line. I think it was the Ron yeary
days with like Dan Fouts, Like, honestly, I feel like
(40:54):
they have had more unlucky injuries and bad breaks every
year with them. My mom was like, ah, I just
don't know if I trust their offensive line.
Speaker 5 (41:03):
I mean, you know, there's the whole other Chargers cursed
and then there was the Nase Harris incident.
Speaker 4 (41:07):
Like it always seems to be something with the Chargers.
Speaker 5 (41:10):
I mean, even the only way Justin Herbert gets on
the field was because Tyrod Taylor, remember he had like
the puncture.
Speaker 4 (41:16):
In his chest, and they're like, oh my gosh, what
the hell do we screwed up? You gotta get Herbert.
It's just one thing after another for the Chargers.
Speaker 1 (41:22):
Thank god they drafted Joe Alt instead of a receiver. Yeah,
because Joe now can move to the left tackle. Was
Slater out Beckton's sick tonight? If they had no Joe
Alt against Chris Jones, forget it, Carl Offtics, forget it.
Speaker 3 (41:39):
I mean, Joe.
Speaker 1 (41:40):
Alt was the right pick. Great, not the sexy pick.
He was the right pick. Our three Jason's picks Eagles, Cowboys,
