Baseball playoffs start. Regular season end Sunday. Baseball playoffs start.
Brewers Mariners World Series Milwaukee to win it. Stop up.
(00:48):
You cannot win a World Series with a bad bully. Can't.
Can't do it. Dodgers cannot win a World Series with
that bullpen. Mariners, you're getting emotional Mariners having the eleak closer,
top seven eight staff. They don't have to manufacture rallies
in the playoffs. You face great pitching. You gotta hit
some jacks, you gotta get home right, you gotta get
fast runs. You're not gonna have six hit rallies against
(01:10):
the best staffs. You're not gonna do that.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
We'll merge that hot take with some actual odds later
in the show. If you want to revisit, I can.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Assure you the Mariners are not close to the favorites.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Sometimes I can be perceptive. All Right, we're gonna play
a game before clat comes on. So these are not
all great teams, but there are no perfect teams in
the NFL. The Eagles are about as close as you
can get. But some of these teams have massive holes.
And my take is if you've got a star quarterback
(01:40):
like Matt Stafford and he's old, yeah, you need to
fix the hole. So we're gonna play panic or patience.
Are you ready to go?
Speaker 4 (01:49):
I think so yes.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
All right, let's play this for four or five minutes.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
All right, So Colin Wis are at the Baltimore Ravens.
They got embarrassed by the Lions. They're thirty first in
scoring defense. Yeah, should the Ravens be panicked or patient?
Speaker 1 (02:01):
I think they have to make a move at the
trade deadline. You watched Detroit run all over them. Well,
who's their big rival in the AFC? Kansas City and
Baltimore and Buffalo. James Cook and Buffalo can run and
keep the ball away from Lamar Jackson. This is a
great offense, but you watch Lamar Jackson on the sidelines
(02:23):
against the Lions. That's what Buffalo has the ability to
do with their James Cook led run game and their
excellent tight ends. I think they have to make a
defensive move at the trade deadline and give up something
on offense.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
All right, let's go to the Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Their offense is a Knemik twenty first in scoring Colin.
Should the Chiefs be panicked or patient?
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Panic? Because this is Travis Kelsey's last year and they
don't really have a receiving core to build a round,
So don't waste mahomes talent right now. They have no
run game Kelsey last year, cross your fingers on the
maturity of Rice. So I think they have to look
strongly at Tyreek Hill. Again, is it a one year deal,
(03:06):
but this is Travis's last year. He will be in
the biggest games ready to roll and block, which he
wasn't early in this season. I think you need to
make a move at the trade deadline.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Okay, Pittsburgh Steelers, they spent all that money on defense
thirty first against the run Colin?
Speaker 4 (03:23):
Should the Steelers be panic their patient.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
I would be more in the panic mode. I think
this is Aaron Rodgers last year. There is no guarantee
you get a quarterback as good as Aaron Rodgers next year.
The o line is inexplicably bad again. Najie Harris is gone.
Caleb Johnson could be a miss, could be a whiff.
If you didn't go get Aaron Rodgers for a three
(03:46):
year plan, it was a one year plan. Fix the
offensive line, go get a very good running back on
a bad team at the trade deadline.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
All right, both of us like the Bills to win
the Super Bowl. However, at three games their last in
rush defense. Now some of that is Derek Henry and
Lamar in the opener. Should the Bills be panicked or patient?
Speaker 1 (04:07):
I think they need to make a move defensively, they
are terrible on third down and by the way, the
best teams in this league Eagles, Lions, Ravens, Rams, some
of the best teams. They all have excellent run games. Again,
when you have a star quarterback, how do you lose?
He is like Lamar Jackson watching the game from a bench.
(04:27):
I think Buffalo maybe they move one of their They
have three really good tight ends. Could they move a
tight end to get an interior defensive lineman, give up
a good tight end and a draft pick. I think
they need to make a move.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
All right, your boy, Vo Nicks, we need to have
a real conversation eventually.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
He's got an eighty.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Three point four passer rating, lowest graded starter among PFF quarterbacks.
Should the Broncos be panicked our.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Patient, patients? Here's their upcoming schedule Bengals, Jets, Giants, Cowboys, Texans, Raiders.
He's going to have a nine to one hundred and
three passer rating. He's going to be just fine. Tough
early schedule for the record struggled last year in September.
Take a deep breath, have patience.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Sakwon Barkley, I mean, Colin. They're three to zero, but
he has not gotten off to a good start. Panic
your patient over saque patients.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
The Eagles have one hundred and thirty plus rushing yards
in every game. Remember, look at all his touches last year.
Look at all his touches. So take a deep breath.
I think you know need to buy a week. Could
they rest him for a week against an easier opponent.
They'll be fine, But I do think there's a little
fatigue from last year's heavy workload.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
For sure, Packers lost to the Browns.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Panic the patients patients. The brown scoring drives were four
yards and sixteen. They were on the road. Jordan Love
threw his first bad pick in about ten games. This
is a great team that had a bad Sunday and
really a bad fourth quarter. Green Bay is fine.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Rams gag away a huge lead against the Eagles just
to collapse. Should they be panicked or patient? A little
panic here. Aj Brown is a problem. They don't have
size at the cornerback position. And by the way, they
have not drafted in the secondary outside of safety Cameron Kitchens.
(06:24):
They have not selected anybody in the backfield in the
in five years. In the first three rounds they have
kind of neglected this position.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
They should have gone after it. I think last year
in the draft they did not go get a top corner.
So they've got a lot of a smaller middle late
round defensive backs. And you know amor On Saint Brown,
AJ Brown, Mike Evans, Justin Jefferson. A lot of these
teams in the NFC have a big, tall, ranginge number
(06:52):
one receiver. I think at the trade deadline. They got
to give up a pick and go get a top corner.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Finally, CJ. Stroud, he stinked. Should the Texans be panicked?
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Our patient patients? First of all, their own line the
last two years is arguably the worst in the league.
Joe Mixon's hurt, so they have no run game. So
I mean, listen, Like most young quarterbacks, it's circumstantial. He's
very good early when his first year he had a
good old line, healthy receivers. They've had massive offensive injuries.
He has still world class precision. Take a deep breath
(07:25):
on Bonix and c J. Sproud. The Green Bay Packers
take a deep breath. But there are some really good
like Buffalo. The way to beat them is the way
Detroit beat Lamar Jackson. I would give up one of
my tight ends and a draft pick to fix the
interior of my d line. And with that, the voice
(07:46):
of college football at Fox, Joe Klatt, who's going to
be calling the Trojans and the fighting Aline I Saturday.
You can't wait for that. Let me start with this.
I was surprised by the line because I think Ohio
State's much better players than Washington. I think it'll be
a really picturesque day, but lost in you know, there's
(08:07):
been so much talk about Texas isn't that good? And
Clemson's falling apart? And Notre Dame lost two games. Lost
in all of it is Ohio State's really really good.
So they're not getting a lot of discussion since the
Texas win. Julian saying, when you look at Ohio State,
is there anywhere there better than last year's team that
(08:29):
won the Natty? Oh, that's a great question. Last year's team,
I mean, from a roster construction standpoint, was historically good.
You know, they were the best talent composite team in
the entire country a year ago. Hard to say. I
do think that they could probably have a more elite
passing game, in particular down the field. I think Sayan
(08:49):
gives them that with his precision. Now he has sown
a couple of picks in the last couple of games,
and that's worrisome for a young quarterback in particular about
to go make his first start on the road. And
by the way, Husky Stadium is nothing to scoff ad Now,
Washington has the second longest home win streak in college
football at twenty two games.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
Colin.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
They had a loss since twenty twenty one, and Washington
is a very good football team. I think that they
have gone totally overlooked in our sport. In fact, the
ap pole continues to prove to everyone what a worthless
piece of junk it is by not giving Washington one vote,
not one, not one. You've got to be kidding me,
that is. It's so disrespectful, it's out of control. Demon
(09:30):
Williams is a very good player at quarterback. They've got
Coleman Jonah Coleman at running back. Running back. Coleman's a
great top ten running back in the sport, and Denzel
Boston is very good on the outside. I actually think
Washington might give Ohio State some fits in this one,
not only the environment, but a quarterback that can run
around and be mobile. I think the eight and a
half that this line is right now, I would probably
(09:53):
take the eight and a half and Washington. I could
see Ohio State using a conservative game plan Colin this weekend,
in articular like they did against Texas, to protect the
young quarterback because it's his first start in the road environment.
And to do that in this environment I think is
going to be big for Julian saying, I think that
they'll be conservative and win this one by only a score.
(10:14):
Oregon at Penn State is going to be magnificent. Excellent defenses.
Drew Aller came into the season as the quarterback we
talked about. Dante Moore is a pro quarterback. Eventually, that dude,
as they say, he can spin it. I think I
like Oregon with the upset. Now you're talking about two
(10:35):
great defenses. James Franklin doesn't get the love because he's
known as a recruiter. Well, he wanted Vandy, he won here.
Their defenses are always good. I think it's fairly low
scoring despite the high profile quarterbacks because I think the
defensees are really good. How do you see it? Well,
there's two huge question marks in this game for me.
(10:56):
The first one is is Penn State in general under
James Franklin, they do not win these types of games.
That's the big knock in fact, and the data backs
that up. It's not just sentiment. You got to go
back to twenty and sixteen for the last time that
they won a regular season game against a Top ten opponent. Wow,
(11:16):
and it's fourteen in a row. They're owing fourteen in
the regular season against the top ten opponent. Now they
beat Utah in a bowl game, and Boise was technically
ranked also in a bowl game inside of the top ten,
but not in the regular season and not against the
Big ten. And this Oregon team is formidable. And the
reason that you articulated is their quarterback. I think Dante
(11:38):
Moore is quickly becoming one of the Heisman favorites in
college football. He is ridiculously talented as a thrower, but
he's also prepared and can run, so that combination for
me makes him a really dangerous player. This environment is
going to be incredible, though I just talked about the
Husky Stadium up there in Seattle. I'll tell you the
white out Appenn State probably is the most difficult environment
(12:02):
in all of college football. I can't make a pick.
I mean, on my show, I said Penn State by one.
I think it's going to be a crazy game. I
would take the three and a half if I was
if I was out there with Oregon, Yes, but maybe
Penn State. Because here's the thing. I think James Franklin
has to win this game. Like Dan Landing in Oregon,
(12:22):
they don't have to win this game but if Penn
State loses at home, it's like We're all going to
be sitting there and thinking to ourselves. Is he ever
going to win a matchup game? Yeah? He went to
the semi final last year, but they beat Boise in SMU.
Not quite the same route that Ohio State had to
take to the National championship last year, where they had
to play Tennessee and then Oregon and then Texas. You know,
(12:43):
So when is the moment when James Franklin and Penn
State is going to level up? Maybe it happens on Saturday,
but they really need to win a game like this
or else their confidence level is going to start to
get rattled. Speaking of a team that struggles in big spots,
Lincoln Riley's been four and ten against rankeds. I said
this earlier. Caleb Williams is a more talented quarterback than
(13:04):
Jayden Mayava. But when I would watch USC with Caleb Williams,
I felt like it was Caleb's offense and Lincoln sometimes
was along for the ride. When I watched this offense,
it is Lincoln Riley's. Yeah, power run. He liked to
run the ball more at Oklahoma that people give him
credit for. Very clever tight end use really really clever.
(13:26):
I mean they there's a very layered offensive game plan.
Very little is ad libbed. Okay, so yeah, it feels
like to me, this USC team, with their size up front,
this is his first team that I feel like I'm want.
This is completely Lincoln Riley's team. Yeah, it's very much
more in the blueprint. You've come around. I told you
(13:47):
this three weeks ago and you kind of raised your eyebrows.
I remember, but yes, yes, they're number one in the
country and yards per play, they're top five and yards
per pass, top five and yards per rush. So it's balanced,
which the OU offenses were always balanced. And this was
because here's the thing, this can be true. This can
be true that Kayleb Williams was the best quarterback talent
(14:11):
wise that Lincoln Riley had at USC, and Jaden Myava's
offense could be better than Kayleb williams offense. Why because
it's more balanced. Mayava stays within the system more so.
What they threatened the defense with is actually what I
would consider to be deeper than what Williams threaded the
defense with. Williams played so much ball outside of the
(14:34):
x's and o's and it was hard to game plan
from an offensive perspective. There were times when the numbers
would suggest he needed to hand the football off, but
in the run pass option he would keep it in
order to try to make a play with a Cape
on his back. And again, incredibly talented. But this offense
is better and it's more balanced. Wayman Jordan at running
back is really good. And then you mentioned the line
(14:54):
of scrimmage. They're better on the offensive line than they
have been the last couple of years. That's pretty clear.
But also the defensive line, and did you know that
they they knew that they needed to get bigger, and
size plays such a huge part in being able to
play solid defense on the defensive line. This year, they
average in their defensive line two deep three hundred pounds.
Last year it was two seventy, just over two seventy.
(15:16):
So they're much more formidable upfront on the defensive side,
which I think is going to help them in the
Big ten schedule. This is I think the most underrated
team in the country. They lost a lot of close
games a year ago. They're much better. Their offense is
very good and it's balanced. I think USC is on
the precipice to make a run here in the next month,
when they've got Illinois on the road, they're going to
(15:36):
have Notre Dame, they're going to have Michigan. You're going
to see them win some of these games, and everyone's
going to be, well, I think they're going to have
their eyes open to how good USC actually is. Well,
it's interesting, I said. I told urban Meyer this about
a month ago. I said. The NIL coaches initially looked
at it as you know evil. I said, it's actually
a job saver because you can't fire the coach and
(15:59):
write an eighty million check and also have twenty million
dollars a year to buy players. I'm like, in the end,
you're gonna give Brian Kelly an extra year or two
because you're asking so much of your donors, and so
the NIL, actually it's almost like March Madness. If you
make the tournament, you keep your job. The NIL is
giving coaches a year or two. And so I look
(16:21):
at Lincoln, I think they're on their way. And I
look at Oklahoma and I said this a couple of
weeks ago. John Matier now he's banged up and they're
not gonna have him for a while. He's excellent. That
kid is excellent. I think Venables between all the juniors
and seniors on defense and finding their magical quarterback, and
it takes a while. Sometimes even the big schools can't
(16:41):
find them. I think Lincoln and Venables, it's gonna work.
And and I think in a different world twenty years
ago that have had the donors breathing down their neck.
My question with Oklahoma because I think Oklahoma's a playoff team.
I think they're a top six or seventeen, but now
they don't have their quarterback. Yeah, so it's not gonna
look like I would disagree with you on Ou because
(17:03):
they don't have balance and they don't have depth at
this point. Because in order to beat Michigan, Matier had
to be superman, and he was, and he is gifted.
He's very gifted, and he's sensational. Now he's got this
broken hand, he's gonna have surgery. Now he's going to
be out a month. They don't beat Texas without John Matteer.
(17:23):
I'm sorry. I don't care how good their defense has played,
and they have played incredibly well. They're not going to
beat Texas without John Mattire because their offense doesn't do
anything without John Mattire. Do you know they're running backs
average per rush is one hundred and thirtieth in the country,
So they don't have anything outside of Matier. So now
he's gone for a month, they will lose one, maybe
two games. They've got Ale miss in that stretch. They've
(17:46):
also got South Carolina in that stretch. But then Colin
once they get him back, then they've still got to
face Alabama, Missouri, LSU. Like I I don't see them
being a playoff team without him healthy every single week.
And this was my exact concern right after they beat
Michigan is I was like, that's a great win for Oklahoma. Man,
(18:09):
it's fantastic, and Materiers should be the Heisman front runner.
But but if he goes down, watch out, And that's
where we're at. So I'm actually a bit concerned. I
would be panicked for Oklahoma at this point. The back
end of their schedule is not favorable. Without Materira on
the field, I don't see them beating teams that they
are evenly matched in, which they were able to do
(18:29):
against Auburn and against Michigan. So from the Oklahoma standpoint,
I'm a bit concern for them. Most underrated team in
the country, most overrated team in the country. Oh, that's
a good one. I think USC is the most underrated
team in the country. I don't think people really realize
how real USC is. I think you can make a
(18:53):
case that Washington is the most underrated team in the
country without one vote in the AP, which is just ridiculous. Overrated,
that's a tougher one. I think I'll let me thok it.
I don't know if they're rated high. I don't buy
Michigan despite beating Nebraska, I don't buy them. Yeah, I mean,
they're not rated overly high. I think that that score
was a lot closer than the game indicated. Absolutely, they
(19:15):
ran it for over three hundred yards, you know, notre
or excuse me, Nebraska through a hail mayor at the
end of the half. Then they scored late, so so
really it was like a ten point margin the way
the game played out, and it ends up being three
on the scoreboard. I would look at a team like
Ole Miss. Ole Miss might be overrated. You know, I
got to patch you this weekend. Yeah, yeah, they've got
LSU and they're weirdly favored in that game. I don't
(19:38):
buy that at all. They're favored by a point a half.
I don't buy that at all. Ole Miss struggled to
beat Kentucky and Arkansas. That's an Arkansas team that lost
to Memphis. Shambliss is their new quarterback. He's a D
two transfer, came from Farris State, won the national championship there.
But now they're going to face a defense that is
really good. LSU's defense is fantastic. Yeah, and in a
(19:58):
lot of ways is the reason that LSU is undefeated.
So I think ole Miss is a bit overrated at
this point. And then I'll tell you a team that
I would I think Bama struggles this week, but we've
kind of there. Georgia doesn't lose at home. George is
gonna beat Bama. I agree. But it's also what people
are failing to realize is Bama is terrible on the road.
Speaker 4 (20:22):
Colin.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
If you go back to last year, they played totally
uninspired against Vandy, lost on the road. They got throttled
by Oklahoma, which Oklahoma was not a great team last year.
I know I watched that game, and they got throttled
on the road at Oklahoma they come out after a
full off season in the first game of the year
and got blasted by Florida State on the road, and
(20:44):
now they've got to go on the road and maybe
the toughest place to play in the country where Georgia
hasn't lost since pre COVID. They've got the longest home
winning streak in the country. And Georgia is coming off
a confidence builder in which they were down twenty one
to seven on the road in Neeland Stadium to Tennessee
and came back and won. That conference still goes through Georgia.
I think Bama is in some serious trouble this weekend.
Speaking of on the road there, you may want to
(21:06):
watch the old pregame show on Fox this weekend and
I hear you're making a trip down to Champagne. The
producers will hopefully squeeze me in for twenty seconds. It's
a pretty crowded set, so I'm going to try to,
you know, weasel my into a way into about twenty seconds.
I told I got to talk to Urban, so I'm
excited for that.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
I love it. Well.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
We will welcome you with open arms, my friend, and
hopefully we get a great environment in a great game
on Saturday. You know, the most fun you can have
in Champagne or Banna. It's the first train leaving, so
I will see, don't do see, don't do that? Why
do that before you go? I love Champagne. Hey, Champagne
coming to town, and I love you. I've heard you
(21:48):
got a great ice cream spot by the way. I
don't know what it's called, but I hear there's some
great ice No, no, no, I like Champagne too, with
some salmon. Man of the people here here he is going,
man of the people right here. I'm joking people. This
is the show. Is a tongue in cheek. That's right,
(22:09):
that's right everywhere. That's right. All right, Good to seeing you, buddy.
Here's well. Have a great day, bud. Yeah, no, I
can't wait. I'm gonna be their. Well, you've got a
lot of people on these pregame shows. I try to
wedge my way in. Have to, you know, kind of
use a power move to get on that show. So
hopefully I can sit down with the fellas.
Speaker 2 (22:25):

Speaker 7 (22:44):
And that's why we have a brand new podcast called
over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun in
our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly,
because this guy is over promising things we never have
time for. Yeah, you blubber list name in me.
Speaker 6 (22:58):
Well you know what it's called over pmise. You should
be good at it because you've been over promising women
for years.

little harder. It's gonna be the best after show podcast

There you go, over promising and remember you could see
it on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen over Promised
with Covino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts
or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
Mark Sanchez last hour, I'm looking at my pocket schedule
on the Bears, trouble, Dodgers also troubled. Got to figure
that bullpen out man, little late Jmackle News, turn on
the news.
Speaker 2 (23:58):
This is the line news.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
All right, let's go to the NFC.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
Colin Caleb Williams, he got to face the Dallas defense
lit him up two hundred and ninety eight yards four tuddies.
We've seen some growth from Caleb week over week and
tight end. Cole Comet talked about his ascendants under Ben Johnson.
Speaker 5 (24:16):
I thought he played great. You know you talk about
you know, coach down up some plays and Caleb exteam
on him. It was really good to see Caleb do
all that stuff. And then when he had to make
a play, he made it to play on the fourth
down to DJ at the back of the end zone,
kind of extending a little bit and making a fine
end the receiver and getting a touchdown there. So good
stuff by Caleb. He continues to ascend every week.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
Yeah, I think it's too easy to just say Dallas
thinks it's still an NFL game. There's pressure. I mean,
he made big throws in big spots and he deserves credit.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
What do you mean it's too easy to say Dallas tame.
Everybody just went up and down the field before we
got the interruption. And by the way, Russell Wilson threw
for four hundred and fifty yards.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
Dallas gave Jalen Hurts and the Eagles problems.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
Well, not before that storm.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
After there was like the outage and the one hour
break where Eagles did nothing, but before that easy work.
Speaker 4 (25:07):
I mean again, you can get all excited about Caleb.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
He now has to go to the Raiders. Right this week,
Bears are favored. Who you got in this one.
Speaker 1 (25:17):
I don't have a strong opinion.
Speaker 4 (25:20):
Nobody's saying you have to. I think the Raiders will
be fighting.
Speaker 1 (25:24):
I have four strong opinions this week, and I'm looking
for a fifth.
Speaker 4 (25:27):
Okay, let's go to the second story.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
Cowboys traded away Michael Parsons obviously, and oh, wouldn't you
know what the defense is hemorrhaging yards points. One of
the worst units in the NFL. NFL writer Robert Mays
believes this all comes down to Jerry's lack of ambition.
Speaker 8 (25:45):
Previous eras of the Cowboys, when Jerry was actually the
one like pulling the strings and making a lot of
the personnel decisions, it was haphazard, it was scattershot, It
was not rooted in any sort of logic most of
the time. But at least there was a level of
ambition to it, right, Like they were trying something.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
He was making moves, He's trying to go get talent.
They were trying to win.
Speaker 8 (26:04):
And even if you didn't, even if you could argue
with the effectiveness of it, I think you at least
had to appreciate the fact that he was trying to
get stuff done. Now it's all of the incompetence and
incoherence with none of the ambition.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
Yes, I believe this is true. I also think they
had Jimmy Johnson in the early days. By the way
Bill Parcelton, Jimmy Johnson won a lot of games, and
so I think Matt Mosley has also said something excellent
reporter down in the Dallas area is that there's a
real question whether Jerry respects and understands the value of coaching.
(26:42):
I think coaching has never been more important, because I
don't the game's never been smarter and more sophisticated. And
Jerry doesn't appear to value coaching. I mean, honestly, he
has hired coaches who need him. Mike McCarthy was on
the beach, Jason Garrett was not getting interviews for jobs,
(27:02):
Brian Schottenheimer wasn't, And when Matt said that, I was like, man,
when you really think about it, Jerry is hired coaches
who need Jerry, and so there's this like, oh, you're
getting solid from Jerry, so you'll listen to Jerry. Buil
didn't listen to him, and Jimmy got sick of listening
to him. And Jerry feels like it's my toy, it's
(27:23):
my business. That's why I want to be GM. So
I think there is some of what they're saying that
podcast that is right, But I also think a big
part of it is coaching is so valuable today. Players
make more the pressures greater, owners are more impulsive, like
it's a game of benches to begin with. And I
(27:44):
just don't think the Cowboys, I don't think they take coaching.
They don't value it like other organizations do well.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
I mean, look who they hired.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
You know, you come off three great seasons with McCarthy
and they were one of the better teams.
Speaker 4 (27:57):
In the NFC.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
I think they had like a ten and twelve wins
playoff appearances, and then you go hire Brian Schottenheimer who's
never been a head coach, never done a damn thing.
Speaker 4 (28:07):
So yeah, I would largely agree with your take.
Speaker 3 (28:09):
Final story, Colin sticking in the NFC East, the commanders man, listen,
this is a dangerous spot. Terry mcclaurin has a quad
injury and he's seeking second opinions. Colin, the Washington Commanders
are beat up and without scary Terry, this offense does
not look very scary. Jaden Daniels still has his knee injury.
(28:30):
Dan Quinn is not really revealing anything other than he's
day to day. I know we can't do it again,
but you have to bet the Atlanta Falcons here.
Speaker 4 (28:40):
I know that sounds insane.
Speaker 1 (28:41):
I refuse.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
I kind of do as well, but I'm never at home.
They get the job done now I'm not getting there.
But with this injury report from Washington.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
There's two things I'm never going to do again. Skydive
I've never done that ever. I'm never gonna do it.
And bet the Atlanta Falcons. I'm done. There's only thirty
one teams every league.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
Yeah, what if Kirk Cousins takes over at quarterback?
Speaker 1 (29:05):
No, not interested. I'm not doing it this team. I'm
not doing it. I won't. You know what, there's thirty
one other capable.
Speaker 3 (29:14):
Bets technically fifteen. But yes, yes, I know what you're saying.
Let me ask, did you see they fired a wide
receiver coach like they're looking for a scapegoat in Week three?
Let's get rid of this wide receiver coach like he's
doing is doing anything?
Speaker 4 (29:27):
I mean?
Speaker 3 (29:29):
Bottom line is Michael Pennix has looked terrible and he
has faced Carolina and Minnesota. He's one of the lowest
graded quarterbacks in the league according to many metrics. He's
down there with bow Nicks. That's not what I anticipated
from Penix. He showed well at the end of last year.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
Remember, Yeah, yeah, I take a deep breath on that.
I think bow Nix's schedule gets gets I mean, I
do see traits with Pennix that feel elite. I think
he throws a beautiful ball.
Speaker 4 (29:58):
When we start to Oh, he lost his right tackle
and he's a lefty.
Speaker 3 (30:01):
We need another year. When does that start or if
it hasn't started already.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Yeah, I think he's down. I see stuff. J Max
with a news.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
herd Line News.
Speaker 1 (30:16):
The you know, I was, I was thinking about this today, Jamt.
How lucky are we? We got the base This is
the best next starting Tuesday is the best month in sports.
It's the best five weeks you get. I mean you're
gonna get baseball playoffs, small market, big market stars. I
mean there's the best bullpens, best staffs, best hitters. You're
getting unbelievable baseball, college football now all the way in
(30:39):
conference play, NFL heating out weather cools. Starting Tuesday, it's
it's a five to six week period. Sports is unbelievable.
And at the end of that, I think if your
hockey fan, hockey starts in the NBA starts, oh, it's unbelievable.
I mean, it's the last weekend where you can have
a life. By by next Tuesday, it's over. Every night
(31:01):
is unbelievable. Sports and coming up. I thought I was optimistic.
I don't think I'm pessimistic, but I took out the
pocket calendar on Caleb and the Bears next.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
at noon eastern nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
Start your Saturday strong with Big Noon Saturday Number twenty one.
USC is looking for a big ten statement win as
they take on the twenty third ranked fighting a line nine.
It all goes down live from Champagne, starting with Big
noon kickoff at ten am Eastern. Then it's USC Illinois
only on Fox.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
So I think this Sunday Week four is kind of
the last week you can fool people. I think you
kind of know by the end of week four you
kind of know what everybody is again. You can fool
people a lot longer. In college football. The coaching's not
as good, the quarterback play is not as dynamic. But
(32:09):
in the NFL you'll get exposed really quickly. Dallas now
starting to get exposed. I think people are sleeping on Denver.
Denver schedule gets really easy. They could reel off a
seven game winning streak. They've opened up with and Bonick
struggled last year early, So I think there are some
truths through the first three weeks. I think by the
end of this week, week four, you'll kind of know
(32:32):
what everybody is and what they're not. We're already seeing
teams like Buffalo can't defend the run problem, Rams struggle.
Probably need a corner they didn't draft one. They probably
should have. They probably need to make a move if
they're going to get to the super Bowl and win
the Super Bowl. So I was saying, like with the
Chicago Bears, what are they Well, I don't think the
(32:55):
symmetry between Ben Johnson and Caleb has been as good
as I thought it would. Beat Caleb still is freelancing
too much. Their defense has not been great. So I
said before the season, I thought I was really optimistic
saying nine to eight because I was giving them a
three and three record in division, which they just don't
(33:15):
do in the last decade. But now they're one and two.
So what have I learned? What have I gleaned in
the first three games. Well, their offense is so talented
they will beat bad defenses. Dallas is a bad defense.
If you start looking around the league, they got four
or five teams here. They're probably gonna do well. At Cincinnati.
(33:38):
I can see some ws here. But this morning I
went back and I looked at every single game and
I revisited my nine to eight prediction. Here's where I
would be. On the Chicago Bears. I think they beat Vegas,
but it's really close. Lose at Washington, beat the Saints
at home, lose at Baltimore, beat Cincinnati, beat the Giants,
(34:02):
lose at Minnesota, close game, beat the Steelers at home,
lose to Filly in Green Bay on the road, beat Cleveland,
low scoring at home, lose to Green Bay, and at
San Francisco, and Detroit could very well be a playoff team.
I could see Detroit. I have predicted the Lions make
the playoffs, resting some starters in the final week. I
(34:24):
could see that. You know, I don't think Detroit's gonna
win the division. They'll have to play in the first round.
My take is they're a physical team, they'll be a
little banged up, they'll protect four or five starters, not everybody,
and they'll beat a depleted and resting Lions team and
that record would be eight and nine. So that's what
(34:44):
they would they would be an eight to nine football team. Again,
I said, coming in, I didn't see them as a
playoff team. I said, can we get synergy, harmony, chemistry?
Can we get that with Ben Johnson and Caleb So
far it looked really good for dalla Us for big portions.
It looked good for a series in the first two games.
So I don't think that's I don't think that's unrealistic.
(35:06):
I think that's where they are right now. It's where
they are. They're gonna beat weaker defenses and go either
way games at home. But I don't think they can
win on the road at Washington, Baltimore, Minnesota, Philly, Green Bay,
or San Francisco. Now they get Green Bay at home.
You know, we'll see. I don't think that's negative. I think,
(35:30):
I said, happiness is directly connected to expectations, So you know, can.
Speaker 4 (35:37):
I ask you something about that?
Speaker 3 (35:38):
So if you look at that schedule, Colin, that opener
against the Vikings was such a swing game. They were
dominating for three quarters. If they win that game, I
am fairly certain your projection would have been like eleven wins.
Because if you could beat a good Vikings team, right
we think the Vikings are a contender with that defense,
then maybe some of these other games, like maybe you
(36:00):
sweep the Vikings, maybe you don't lose both games to
the Packers, you know, and there's a world where I mean,
you faced Jake Browning that you know, catch a break there,
But I don't know, are you sure they're losing to
Washington for sure?
Speaker 1 (36:12):
Is Washington? By the way, if we'll say this, if
it sounds crazy, but the Ravens defense is so suspect
they may I mean, Baltimore is going to keep you
in games because they can't stop the run and they're
week on the back end. That's why I said we
played panic or patience, Like if you have a great
(36:34):
quarterback like Lamar and Josh Allen, the only way to
beat them, if you think, is to keep the quarterback
on the sidelines. And so Buffalo's run defense and the
Raven's entire defense is trouble. That's why last year Burrow
was statistically arguably the best quarterback in the league, couldn't
make the playoffs because he was sitting watching games. And
(36:56):
so to me, like if like on the Rams, let's
get get the bear schedule out of there, I'm the Rams.
I have Matt Stafford. This is arguably I think Stafford's
gonna play this year. They're going to draft a quarterback
sit in behind Stafford for a year. So I got
Matt Stafford for probably two years. Who gets banged up.
(37:18):
I'm going all in because there's a likelihood that even
if I draft a quarterback that works, he'd be two
to three years before he's Matt Stafford pre snap. So
my take is now now with Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen,
I have a much longer timeline. But my thing is
when the only way to beat the Buffaloes in the
(37:40):
Baltimorees now, Kansas City is interesting. This is where the
Chiefs have a lot going for. Kansas City's defense is great,
so when they get Rice and Worthy back, their time
of possession will improve some. They won't be as bad
on third down. They're not going to be a great
running team this year. They're not going to be. So
my take on Kansas City is They're defense will keep
(38:01):
giving Mahomes chances and if Rice and Worthy and Travis
Kelcey in big games, that's enough to win playoff games. Okay,
so let me ask you the Chargers and Herbert Now
are scary because their defense is unbelievable, and that's going
to give Herbert two to three more possessions longer drives.
Hampton now is coming into his alma as a running back.
(38:23):
So the Chargers are interesting. If you don't love an offense,
what's the defense look like? If you love an offense, Baltimore.
Nothing kills a great baseball team like a bad bullpen.
Baltimore's defense. You can't win a Super Bowl with that defense.
So let me ask you regarding the Bears. If you're
inside the front office, polls and everybody, you're huddling around
the table, guys, Coward says, we're going eight to nine.
Speaker 3 (38:45):
Okay, we know our internal we know what we've got here.
We're not making the playoffs this year.
Speaker 4 (38:51):
In the NFC, Itt.
Speaker 3 (38:51):
Stacked DJ Moore, Roma Dunze is emerging. Luther Burden played
well against Dallas. Why don't we just move off DJ
Moore to a team that, like you said, is panicky
and needs a receiver.
Speaker 1 (39:03):
I think let's try to get that's the move. They've
got two good tight ends, a capable running back, O
line commitment. DJ Moore feels invisible, and Roma Dunze, come
at Colston, Lovelin Burden and they've got another backup receiver.
That's okay. My take is I would move I would
consider moving DJ Moore. First of all, you got him
(39:26):
on a steal. Remember that. Remember the deal, eight guys,
it's Ryan Pole's best move. I would now consider moving
him because he also is a veteran player around a
lot of young guys, and I think DJ Moore looks
around the league and think, why am I not as
productive as some of these guys. I'm way more town.
Not that he'd be a bad locker room guy, but
I think DJ Moore wears his emotion sometimes in his
body language.
Speaker 4 (39:46):
And he's a veteran quality.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
A very good plot take.
Speaker 3 (39:49):
If I'm the New York Giants and Dable and I see, shucks, man,
I'm starting a rookie quarterback and some of the numbers
for rookie quarterbacks starting in the first year not great.
Speaker 4 (39:57):
Gee, I'm on the chopping block.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
You know, Let's bring in d Moore. Let's just invigorate
the office. We got neighbors, we got more uh, we
got cam scataboo. Let's just let's go all in. Do
you think the Giants are a team that would go
after more. Do you think you're just saying and we're done.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
No, they need they they're still in rebuild. They need
draft picks. I mean they're left tack.
Speaker 4 (40:17):
Where is it good? What good is a draft pick
for Brian Dable? He ain't gonna be there next.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
Well, I think if you made that kind of move,
you'd probably have to go upstairs and get approval. I
DJ Moore, give.
Speaker 4 (40:29):
Me a team.
Speaker 3 (40:31):
I was gonna say to Denver Broncos, Babe bo Nix
is on the struggle bus. Let's get him a possession
receiver to go opposite Courtland Sutton.
Speaker 1 (40:38):
No, they got No, they have Mims and Franklin are
both Seattle.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
Look, I mean, I don't know that they do it,
but jsn and then there's a huge drop off, huge
a wide receive.
Speaker 1 (40:47):
They like that kid out of Colorado State, the fifth
round pick, the rookie. He said, no, they like him.
I let me, I'll throw one at you, Kansas City.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
Yeah, but they got Rice coming back.
Speaker 1 (40:57):
I think they're gonna but you can't depend on Rice. Well,
we're the issues Worthy and Rice. I don't want, I
would say, Dj Moore, I think DJ Moore to Kansas
City is interesting. And by the way, you're making a trade,
the Bears can get DJ Moore to the other conference. Yeah, okay,
And then I think DJ Moore, I think with Tyreek,
you've always got you know, you've always got stuff. DJ
(41:19):
Moore is kind of a quiet guy.
Speaker 4 (41:20):
Let me give you Buffalo Bills.
Speaker 3 (41:22):
There is not I mean, Kean Tolman has shown a
little bit.
Speaker 4 (41:26):
Shakier's more of a slot guy. I've not like the
two tight ends.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
But why not.
Speaker 1 (41:30):
I think again, if you've got an old quarterback like
Aaron Rodgers or Matt Stafford and you think you could
be a playoff team, make a move. Or if you
have a great quarterback and you're like, yeah, our defense
has a hole. I mean, Buffalo, you're only going to
get about four more years of Josh Allen at this level,
like like absolutely devastatingly in his prime. Kansas City's down offensively,
(41:54):
Baltimore's defense stinks. If I'm Buffalo, I look at the
Ravens defense and the Chiefs offense and say, this is
the year. I'm not giving this year up. I'm going
making a move. Ravens. Devens will never be this bad again,
and the Chiefs offense won't stink like this
