for listening to the Herd Podcast. Let's take a deep
(00:21):
breath talk about something much more positive. A World Series
which I think is going to be really competitive. Everybody
thinks the Dodgers, Oh there, Toronto, Vlad Springer starting pitching,
home field advantage Toronto is a handful, and Dave Roberts,
manager of the Dodgers, is joining us live. You know,
(00:42):
it's interesting. We all know in baseball. Good to see
you again, Skip, Great to see you Davis Alas we
all know in baseball that you know, momentum is the
next day's pitcher. But there are little bits of wisdom
you can take. Even though every postseason run is different.
Last year you guys were up against it. I mean,
I can remember bullpen games against the Podres and I'm like,
(01:05):
I'm not sure the Dodgers are getting.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Out of this series. You've been more dominant this year.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
Is there anything, though, Dave, you can take from last
year's playoff run little notes or bits of wisdom and say, guys,
remember that from last year to this year.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
You know what? I think what it comes down to.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
And I think a lot of people talk about I
absolutely agree with your momentumus next day starting pitcher, and
certainly the Blue Jays have got some momentum.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
I feel we've got momentum.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
I think what I've taken away is the urgency piece
of it, and how do you get.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
To the urgency piece?
Speaker 4 (01:39):
And I think the way I frame it to our
guys is we're in a street fight. And I think
that when you have that street fight mentality that lends
itself to urgency and every pitch, every play, and you know,
kind of take the momentum, embrace it and don't let
off the gas. And I think, right now, you see
(02:00):
our ball club play, we're playing with that street fighter
mentalityality versus that kind of season boxing mentality.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yeah, you know it's funny.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
The Blake Snell Yoshi, So I went on the air
full disclosure. I said, I love Dave Roberts. I would
have let Snell go because I just want to win
the first game of the series. I don't care Yoshi.
I said, okay, we got one in the bag.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
I go to the pen.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
On that, I thought it was really cool for you
to come out and say some of this has gut feeling. Guys,
I'm sitting there on the steps. So let's talk a
little bit about that. Because baseball managers, it doesn't It
could be you or Aaron Boone, it could be anybody.
You guys get criticized for those moments. It's the seventh
that's when all of us think we should be manager.
(02:47):
What is that guy doing for you? You mentioned that
you were watching Snell or you watch Yosi. Do you
talk to him during a game or do you want
to stay away from that? Is it kind of a
body language sense on I'm gonna let it go or
I'm gonna pull him.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
It's it's a knowing the player. It's knowing. It's knowing
the player. I mean, that's my job essentially, And I
think the thing is is that you know my job
is to know my players. I definitely don't get it
right all the time, but I feel like my process
and kind of how I know how to manage guys
for the short the long term is pretty sound. I
(03:25):
think the great thing Colin about baseball is because if
you look at you know, basketball is so quick. You
can't coach basketball in real time. You can't change defense
as a fan. Right football, you could probably do it
a little bit, but baseball is something where every fan
has that opportunity to essentially manage. But I do feel
(03:46):
like trusting my players, knowing my players, knowing my coaches.
I've got a sound process. But I was right there
with you and then that blank snow thing with fifty
to fifty and you know, right now we're watching Roki
and to put him in the pen, that's a gut
feeling that I feel like I can trust him in
big spots where that wasn't easy. And right now, you know,
(04:06):
I trust my players. I love my players, and I
think again, we're playing good baseball.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
It's interesting, I said before the playoffs, I said, in
my lifetime, I've seen teams with great bullpens win the
World Series. I think the Royals years ago had it,
and they didn't have necessarily a great roster, but if
they led in the six, they won the game. I said,
I've never seen a team with a shaky bullpen win
a World Series. I said, I don't think the Dodgers can.
And then suddenly the bullpen gets solved. Roki moves to
(04:36):
the bullpen. Take me to the part in the season.
It could have been you and Andrew Friedman. It could
have been you and your pitching coaches and talking that
you just decided, listen, we got to make some alterations.
We gotta pivot here. He's young, he's got great stuff.
We're gonna move him. Like, what were those ongoing or
was there an epiphany or a moment that you just said,
(04:58):
we can't win Pennant with this current bullpen.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
How did that process work?
Speaker 3 (05:05):
You know what?
Speaker 4 (05:05):
I think that Okay, there's two parts of this.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
I think with Roki.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
If you look back at April, where you see there
were visuals photographs of him, you know, teary eyed in
the pen, you know, just distraught, disappointed, scared, worried, all
that stuff, right, and then so just trying to get
him back to health, trying to nurse his mindset. His
(05:30):
physical being back was number one. And then as he
kind of made his way back and trying to build
him up, appreciating the fact that We've already had enough starters,
so we weren't going to use him in that starter role.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
And then going to him with me and Andrew.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
And the pitching guys and saying, hey man, you have
an opportunity if you want to take on a bullpen
roll don't know what the rule is going to look like.
This is an opportunity for you to impact twenty twenty
five and basically right your twenty twenty five season.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
He was like, I'm in.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
And then so we look at the calendar and we
had literally two opportunities in the regular season to give
him an opportunity to pitch out of the pen for us.
It showed really well. And then I think in the
Cincinnati Wildcard Series there is a spot that I was like,
you know what, we're either going to sink or swim.
We got to see what it looks like, and I
(06:21):
ran him out there. He performed, and then from then
it's just like the rest is history. He started getting
some momentum, and even in that Philly no I think
it was the I don't know if it was a
Brewer outing where it didn't look good or the Philly.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Outing, and you know, I.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
Was determined to running back out there and not run
from him, so he can kind of keep that confidence.
And so I give the organization rookie a lot of
credit for kind of riding the ship. And then the
other part of it is like when you're looking at
the postseason, you're trying to get the best arms you
can for the postseason, So you know, using gloss Now
(06:56):
out of the pen, using Emmett Sheen out of the pen.
So it wasn't really kind of what girl brought us
to the dance as far as the pen is who.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
We're going to go with.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
But at the end of the day, though, Colin, I've
said it, we're going to go with our best arms.
And if you can get your best arms, and right now,
our best arms are the starting pitchers. If those guys
can take down the most outs, we're going to be
in a good spot.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Yeah, it's funny about analytics. The term I always use
is analytics because I think in baseball, when the postseason comes,
the numbers are the numbers.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
But there are moments when.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
You're like I may used to have I may have
to use a starter in the pen, guys all hands
on deck, So do you find yourself with analytics, they're
still important. But like I say this about the NBA,
the referees stop calling fouls in the postseason, so the
analytics get all screwed up. They just let them wrestle
(07:51):
and all of a sudden, you don't get to the
free throw line in baseball. You manage differently in the postseason.
I mean, you want Snell going. I mean to me,
I want you, And I'm like, you wouldn't have let
Yoshi go. You would have gone to the panic if
that game's in June, would you not?
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Absolutely?
Speaker 4 (08:08):
It's funny is that word analytics And I somehow got
tied to analytics. And I don't use my eyes or
my gut, but I think that I managed, and I
watched the game, and so I think in the postseason.
I'm not saying put analytics aside, but you have got
to bet on players, You've got to bet on people,
(08:30):
and you've got to bet on heartbeat. And in that moment,
I do think that analytics. The place for analytics for
me is the long haul one sixty two. At the
end of the day, it plays out. But when you're
talking about one moment in time, is that picture going
to get that hitter out. Is that hitter going to
get a hit or take a good at bat against
that picture? Or are there nine guys that I'm running
(08:52):
out there do I feel has the best chance to
score runs against that particular picture? That is the that's
a coin flip, that's heads or tails, and that's what
I bet on. You know, that's how I manage the postseason.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Well, we've seen this also.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
I thought it was interesting the Mariners had Julio Rodriguez
and Cal Rawley at the top of their order and
show hey, Otani obviously leading off. And I've said this,
I zone in on baseball during the postseason. In the
regular season, it's almost like the radio sound of my summer.
I have the games on. I'm in and out of stuff.
(09:25):
There does it in my when I grew up, I
mean you had Johnny bench was bat and cleanup, Pudges
bat and cleanup, right like you have your big gut
Barry Bonds three or four. Now you got power guys
hitting toward the top of the lineup, which I would
would imagine is they get more at bats. But it
is interesting how I mean, that's my take is I
(09:46):
want Otani up as much as I can get him.
Do you love that or is just that the reality
of the way the game is played, because I kind
of love my big bombs, you know, I want you know, I.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Like him in the three, four to five spot. How
do you land on that?
Speaker 4 (10:01):
I love the way, And I think for me, it's
like anything where you want to continue to evolve and grow.
Where when I was growing up as you were, same
time period, show him would be hitting you know, three
or four. But I think that the way that understated
that you want to get your best hitters as many
at that's as possible. That's how you win baseball games.
(10:21):
And I can tell you know, Bruce Bouchie right now
or Jim Tracy right now, he should have hit me
leadoff versus Randy Johnson. You know, if I'm put to
play center field, I should have hit ninth. And those
are things that you've got to evolve. And Johnny bench
facing Nolan Ryan. Maybe Johnny could have hit fifth or
(10:45):
six and maybe you know, but that's the way the
game has evolved. And I do think that you got
to kind of appreciate that. And so I just don't
want to be beholden to one lineup. I think our
guys have evolved. But I do feel that, you know,
having Show at the top, Mookie two, I flipped flip
Freddy and Will Smithko and things like that, because it
(11:07):
is kind of, you know, the little we can go
deeper calling, you know where It's like you get a
tough lefty to give attacks to get to Freddy a
third time. Those are little nuances of setting the lineup.
But I do think that having your best hitters take
the most of that's makes sense.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
And by the way, it does help that MOOKI and
Show Hey also have wheels so they can move. That
helps as well. By the way, my favorite Dave Roberts moment.
You're a very humble guy. But this piece of audio
made me laugh. Let's play it.
Speaker 5 (11:35):
Oh, this is a one team, one dream operation. And
I'll tell you, before this season started, they said the
Dodgers are ruining baseball. Let's get four more wins and
really ruin baseball.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
Let's go, come on, Dave, that's funny. I like that
Dave Show.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
It's okay. You know.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
Here's the thing is that everyone trolls me, and so
I figured, you know what, I'm going to flip it
on its head and troll some people that are trying
to create this crazy narrative that the Dodgers are ruining baseball.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
I will tell you this, call it.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
And you know this, Baseball viewership is at an all
time high. Baseball players are better than they've ever been.
We're going to have more eyeballs watching this World Series
than ever because of the country of Canada, US and
Japan and beyond. Right, So obviously the Dodgers are not ruining.
Baseball is in a great state. And I was just
(12:34):
kind of taking a dig at these crazy people that
say that what we do, and I think we do
it really well, we're ruining baseball.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
So that was my little dig.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
Yeah, by the way I said this, Tommy Edmund was
hitting two sixty five for the Cardinals.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
You got it.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
He becomes the NLCSMVP. Max Munsey was cut by the A's.
Now he leaves the Dodgers in all time home runs.
This idea that it's not just it's just money, it's research,
it's development, it's scouting, it's managing. I've always said that
the most. I said this earlier today. There's an anti
Californian sentiment in this country. Sometimes everybody picks on California.
(13:08):
The weather's great, the mountains, the beaches. The truth is
it's a very likable team. I believe the reason Roki
will take a bullpen roll. I truly believe this is
because he knows there's no ego, and he knows you
could go to showhand and say.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
I'm betting your third to night. I bet.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
I think you've created I've said this the Yankees or
the Astros. You can hate those guys. This is not
a hat heable team. And I think to some degree,
I think Roki says, yeah, I'll do it. And part
of it is that's the culture that you've created, is
it not?
Speaker 4 (13:44):
It is call And that's the biggest compliment I can get.
Because we have great players, we have a great organization.
But I feel that in the long season, to be
really good every year, to have guys buy in is
what a lot of head coaches and managers talk about.
To get superstars to buy into whatever you ask of
them and to be selfless. That's the that's the secret sauce,
(14:05):
And for me as a manager, that's something I'm really
proud of.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
So I appreciate you bringing that to life.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Finally, just one I'm only going to ask.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
It's not a favor, but just consider, if you've got
an open base, the game is tied, and George Springer's
coming up, just consider walking him. Just consider that you
don't have to pitch to him. I'm not pointing fingers
at anybody, but Toronto is really good. I mean, I
know you've watched You've watched them. I think this matchup.
(14:33):
You've got what concerns you about the Jays?
Speaker 4 (14:38):
You know what they they're really athletic. I think that
you mentioned Springer, who's a big game player. He's on
a heater right now, had a great, you know, last
couple of months. That guy right there, Vladimir scares the
heck out of me. And they're just a greedy group.
They're very similar to our club, and they're tough. I
(15:01):
think Ross Adkins, I think Marsha Pier. They've done a
great job with this club. And you know you Savage,
we don't know him, so there's some unfamiliarity there. But
like you said, it's going to be a great series.
Joe Davis I talked to the other day, said he's
never heard a louder stadium than he heard here at
the Rogers Center. So it's going to be a lot
of fun. It's going to be great. I think the
city has been waiting a long time for this, and
(15:23):
you know, I'm looking forward. It's gonna be a lot
of fun.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
Thanks for giving us fifteen minutes, Dave Roberts, all is
so great to our show, and I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Skip all right, thank you, appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
Com all right, Dave Roberts. I think it's going to
be a really good world series. And I think it's
a really interesting story that he talks about Roki that
he went to him, he and Andrew Friedman, the pitching coach,
and hey, will you come out of the pen, And
he said, I'll do it. And I think that's the culture.
I said earlier. There've been hateable teams. I mean you
go back to that Mets team with Lenny Dykes, Drude.
There have been the characters everywhere. This isn't one of
(15:55):
those teams. Like good guys, all right, Greg co Sell,
Dave Roberts, Chris Sims today and that NBA story.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Hush.
Speaker 6 (16:06):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd Weekdays

Speaker 2 (16:47):
You know, I knew that there was a good reason
I never enjoyed poker. It's a boring guy.
Speaker 8 (16:54):
It's not that you're bad at it, right.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
And I just don't like going down to people's basements.
I watched Silence of the Lamb. I don't go downsteps.
I'll go upstairs. I don't go downstairs unless it's my home.
Speaker 9 (17:05):
So what about with friends, no relatives, no come on, nope,
main floor, upstairs, no downstairs, nothing but trouble happens downstairs.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
I'm reading these, I'm reading the FBI accusations on the
poker stuff. Oh my lord, it's it's.
Speaker 8 (17:24):
By the way.
Speaker 10 (17:24):
You mentioned Rounders a couple times today. How many times
have you watched that movie? Like maybe fifteen. It's amazing.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
No, I'll tell you I've watched Casino four or five
because he was very good.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Good Fellas multiple.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Times, the Irishman's twice.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
It's long, but it's great.
Speaker 8 (17:39):
I thought that was like four hours.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
You watch that? Yeah, yeah, oh wow yeah. J Maack
with the news.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
No, no, turn on the news.
Speaker 6 (17:48):
This is the Herdline News.
Speaker 10 (17:51):
All right, let's talk Aaron Rodgers colin the big matchup
on Sunday night Football Packers Steelers, Rogers battling his former
team for the first time. Earlier this week, we heard
from Matt Lafleur, who said the game should just be
about the two teams and not Rogers. Well, Aaron Rodgers
addressed the matchup with the media.
Speaker 11 (18:12):
Again, it would feel different if it was going back
to Greenback. I have a lot of love for the organization,
but you know, if we're playing Lambo, that would be
a little different. Failing for surely, I don't have any
animosity tour the organization. Obviously, I wish that, you know,
things have been better in our last year there, but
you know, have a great relationship with a lot of
(18:33):
people still in that organization, and you don't this is
not a revenge game for me. I'm just excited to
see some of those guys.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
Well, I think he wants to win it slightly more
to win every game they.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
Moved off him, you know so, well, wait a minute,
Wait a minute, wait a minute.
Speaker 8 (18:52):
It didn't for like two or three straight summers.
Speaker 10 (18:54):
He was like, I don't know if I want to
come back Darkness Retreat.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
Well, yes, but they eventually. He said that he was
surprised when he came from the Darkness Retreat. He said
he was surprised they let him go.
Speaker 10 (19:05):
I was floored emerging from the Darkness Retreat that the
organization didn't with And also.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
Yeah, listen, he didn't love them drafting Jordan Love in
the first round. I get all that stuff. I will
say in defensive Aaron. He always treated Jordan Love more
hospitably than Farv treated Aaron. I thought Aaron showed Aaron
was a good teammate. He don't have to be, by
the way, if somebody, if a team drafts somebody to
(19:33):
replace you, you don't have to be. Your job is
to win Sunday. Aaron was always more classy and hospitable
than Farv was to Aaron.
Speaker 8 (19:41):
Let's move on.
Speaker 10 (19:42):
To story number two, and that is the big as
a match up. I'm still into this Colin Eagles Giant
Sunday on Fox. Obviously, Jackson dark beat the Eagles, humiliated
them recently just two weeks ago.
Speaker 8 (19:55):
On Thursday Night Football.
Speaker 10 (19:57):
Now he has to go to Philadelphia, Colin and a
great Jackson Dart is going to the link. Here's what
his teammate Whyders Ever, Darius Slayton, wants him to know
ahead of the matchup.
Speaker 12 (20:08):
If he didn't have any haters, he'll find about where
they all live. He's about to get introduced all of them.
But you know, it's still just football, you know obviously,
especially you know he's an SEC kid like me, and
you know you're playing that conference. You know it's the
same way going to those Wayte stadiums and and honestly
that's what makes it great, you know that that competitive fire.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
I will say the best thing Jackson Dart has going
for Lane Kiffin multiple years in a talent rich NFL
rich SCC, and I think it matters. I don't think
it's as big a leap going from the SEC defense
as a Lane Kiffen then coming from a conservative offense
and the Mountain West. I think, you know, I mean,
(20:52):
Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes had to catch up to
NFL speed. You play at Ole Miss and you're playing
Alabama Georgia, Florida. I think Blaine Kiffin component to this
has helped him. He came in here. I mean even
in the preseason. You remember that the first time we
saw him play, our take was always.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Kind of ready to play.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
He's interesting, He's an interesting player.
Speaker 10 (21:13):
Let me ask you, I know you love Caleb Williams,
but who do you think has a better next five years?
Speaker 8 (21:19):
Caleb Williams or Jackson dart Well.
Speaker 1 (21:22):
Caleb Williams because he's going to have Ben Johnson where.
Speaker 10 (21:25):
I mean Brian dabol Well. We don't know Job Liver,
we don't know Josh Allen. He kind of made Josh.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
New York football teams do not keep coaches, so I
don't trust New York football teams. I trust the Bears
to keep Ben Johnson. I think it's been established six
games in seven games in Ben's the right coach.
Speaker 10 (21:45):
So the thing about Jackson dart is he runs around
a lot like Caleb Colin. But from what I've seen
the limited sample size, he's actually throwing the ball and
with accuracy when he's scrambling around like Johnny Manziel back there,
Caleb runs around and then like he's not making plays
with his arm.
Speaker 8 (22:02):
Dart has surprised me in that effect. Are you noticing this?
Speaker 1 (22:04):
Well, there's a show we'll show you. Right here, there's
one of these completions. I think it's the one right here.
Speaker 8 (22:08):
Look at that he's got his head, eyes up the
whole time.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
That ball could have been picked.
Speaker 1 (22:12):
I mean, the truth is in the NFL, unlike college,
you are throwing to people that aren't open.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
That's rare. When you see that video for a TVI
that doesn't happen.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
Most of it is you're throwing to a sideline hoping
a guy gets there, or you're throwing in traffic. So
I mean a lot of NFL throw it like this
throw right here is what NFL throws look like a lot,
which is you're throwing it. I mean, that's a seed,
but you're throwing it to a guy that's covered. So
it's just that's why I think playing in a big
ten or an SEC, when you can go against NFL
(22:45):
first round dvs at Georgia and have lane Kiffin. I
think Jackson is a year ahead of schedule. Because of that,
I think it's most college football doesn't prepare you great
for the NFL, Lane Kiffen plus the SEC does.
Speaker 8 (23:00):
Final story con Let's go to the NBA fun game
last night. Listen.
Speaker 10 (23:03):
I mentioned last week the Sixers are going to be
spicy this season. And if you watched any of this game.
Speaker 4 (23:08):
VJ.
Speaker 10 (23:09):
Edgecombe, the young rookie out of Baylor, Oh my gosh,
he was incredible. Thirty four points in his debut, the
most in a debut since Wilt Chamberlain in nineteen fifty nine.
He had fourteen in the first quarter. This kid's got
some juice. Oh my gosh, here is Edgecomb talking about
his debut in the NBA.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
It's amazing.
Speaker 13 (23:31):
I must say, it's amazing.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
I mean, but you know, I have.
Speaker 13 (23:35):
A you know, hopefully man, God's will to have a
long career ahead of me, you know, and that's what
matter most man, longchevity. No, Noan Lebon who's been there
for twenty plus years. No, I'm hoping that I can
do that one day, you know. But I'm just come
and putting in work. But like, it feels great to
be have my name Michean Lepine.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
By the way, now two guards can lead the Sixers. Finally,
Darryl Morey can beat guard driven. I'm done with the
mbiad stuff. I don't they're different players, but watching him
last night, it reminds me they're totally different players. Of
Jalen Brown when he was out of cal and went
to the Celtics, and I remember watching him once or
twice in college and thinking that dude is physically strong
(24:19):
and quick. And when that Jalen Brown get out of
caw can learn to kind of polish his offensive game. Well,
I mean this guy again, when you watch him run
the floor, look at his body type like he's an
he's a pro athlete. I didn't know he dropped thirty four.
But what I like about it from the Sixer standpoint is, Okay,
Tyrese Maxi and this kid that's the future. Let's stop
(24:41):
clinging to finger crossing with em Bead's health. I think
that's exciting if you're a Sixer fan.
Speaker 10 (24:46):
Yeah, embiid on a bit of a minute's restriction colin
twenty minutes, he had four points.
Speaker 8 (24:51):
I believe he was two of nine shooting.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
It's over likely what's the story on number seventy seven.
Speaker 8 (24:58):
I'm not aware.
Speaker 1 (25:00):
Is this spring training? Is he a left handed middle reliever?
What's going on here?
Speaker 8 (25:04):
I don't know, but I'm just telling you.
Speaker 10 (25:06):
They also got the young kid McCain from Duke. He
was injured last year. He's very good. Paul George eventually
will come back. I think they're gonna be spicy in
the East, which is down a little bit this year,
except for of course you Orlando Magic.
Speaker 9 (25:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
Well, you know what I noticed the first two nights,
This was a really good NBA draft.
Speaker 2 (25:24):
Yeah, that's what I noticed, And you and I've talked
about this.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
This draft this past year is the beginning of a
new trend where NIL is allowing some of the really
good players now Cooper Flag didn't to stay maybe an
extra year, and European stars. College basketball is now buying
the best young Spaniards and the best young European players.
They talked about shuddering as spanishly, So what does that mean?
(25:50):
College basketball now is going to have about ten European
players that wouldn't have been in college.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
Basketball three years ago.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
They're also getting about six to seven that could go
to the NBA maybe second round, late first round, they'll
stay in college and be a star at Xavier or
whatever the program is. So you're gonna have about fifteen
guys going forward that either weren't college basketball players or
would have left now in the sport. So college basketball.
(26:19):
I noticed it this year in March Madness. The quality
of play was better, the games were better. There were
more NBA athletes in college basketball, and it's helped the draft.
And if you watch the first two nights when you
could come into the NBA and drop thirty.
Speaker 10 (26:32):
Four against the Celtics who have Derek White on the
perimeter and good defensive players. I'll just add I love
that you're already talking college basketball. The sport tips off
next month.
Speaker 13 (26:43):
I know.
Speaker 8 (26:43):
Listen, we love baseball. The World Series.
Speaker 10 (26:45):
Once baseball's done, right to college hoops, Colin.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
Yeah, way you carry that. By the way, here's the story.
Speaker 1 (26:51):
His favorite number is seven, but that was taken, so
he doubled it with seventy seven.
Speaker 10 (26:56):
Okay, that's a great gambling number as well.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
Right.
Speaker 3 (26:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
He'll be pitching the and sixth inning for the Phillies
next year. He is a middle reliever in spring training.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
J Mack with the news.
Speaker 6 (27:07):
Well that's the news and thanks for stopping by The
Herdline News.
Speaker 1 (27:12):
What a day, What a crazy looney day when we
have Cash Pateel sound on our show, It's not your
typical Thursday live in Chicago.
Speaker 6 (27:30):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 10 (27:39):
Tomorrow, the World Series begins on Fox as show Hao
Tani and the reigning champion Dodgers take on Vlad Junior
and the Blue Jays. Game one of the World Series
coverage begins tomorrow at seven Eastern on Fox, and before
the game, you could check out show Heyo Tani's interview
with Kevin Burkhart.
Speaker 8 (27:58):
Here's a clip.
Speaker 14 (28:00):
Show now it's talk World Series. Having played in it
last year for the first time, show Hey oh Toddy,
what lessons did you take from that that you'll apply
to this year's World Series?
Speaker 6 (28:15):
That's stick? What team in Geentha Stick.
Speaker 8 (28:21):
Team and Agentha City Money thing and the champions the stick?
Speaker 10 (28:30):
Do you.
Speaker 3 (28:33):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (28:33):
I think adding the Blue Jays, Canada's best is going
to add to it. I I don't buy for a
second it herdspaceball to have a dynasty. NBA has got
seven champs in seven years. A lot of the dominant
tennis players Jokovic and Nadal uh feder Serena are not
dominating tennis. We don't have a dynasty in the NFL.
(28:54):
We don't have a dominant Alabama team winning every year.
It's okay if we have one extremely well run baseball
team that is well capitalized crushing and I had I
said that the Dave Roberts earlier, I said, do you
think the Dodgers are ruining baseball?
Speaker 4 (29:10):
Baseball viewership is at an all time high. Baseball players
are better than they've ever been. We are going to
have more eyeballs watching this World Series than ever because
of the country of Canada, US and Japan and beyond. Right,
So obviously the Dodgers are not ruining baseball. It's in
a great state. And I was just kind of taking
(29:31):
a dig at these crazy people that say that what
we do and I think we do it really well,
we're ruining baseball.
Speaker 3 (29:37):
So that was my little dig.
Speaker 1 (29:39):
And I you know, listen, there's there's I mean, you
watch television, there there is sort of an anti California sentiment,
and it's you know, it's got great weather and the
economy's massive. People and I live there are happy. They
honked less than traffic, Mountain ranges, desert, it's beautiful. I
tried to talk Jmack to coming into Chicago and he
(30:01):
wasn't going to have any of it. But we put
together a Dodgers ad on why LA is so great.
Speaker 15 (30:07):
Calif We've got stars in the sky, the stars on
the ground, mountains up high, a paradise. Found a beautiful
scene where you'll live like a king. Come for the
winds and stay for the ring. It's California. Are you jealous?
Speaker 6 (30:28):
Of course you are California.
Speaker 10 (30:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (30:34):
I mean it's uh.
Speaker 8 (30:35):
You need to put that on social media. Collin, come on.
Speaker 10 (30:38):
That is chum in the water for the social the
angry social media mob.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
That's really funny.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
You know you and I have always, i would say,
kind of pivoting here because the news of the day
was the NBA story with the FBI is uh.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
You know, I've always felt in this business.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
I think one of the reasons you and I connected
very early, as I always felt even before the Supreme
Court ruling to legalize gambling in America, it's rolled out,
it's legal in almost every state. It's the same we've
seen it with cannabis in America. I think there's limitations
to both. I don't think kids should be smoking pot
every day. I don't think as their brand develops it's good.
And I think there are some rules. I mean, you
(31:19):
know you and I I'm pro gambling, but they are rules.
I'm pro drinking. I don't drink and drive. Society has rules.
They don't ask a lot of us. Don't get bombed
and step into a car, take uber, don't gamble if
you're a professional.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
Athlete on your own league or you know.
Speaker 1 (31:36):
The rules are very simple. It's not asking people a lot.
So and I see all the moralists today are like,
this is what happens. Wet noid doesn't. By the way,
gambling has been legalized in Europe forever. You don't have
English Premier League players all getting in trouble. These leagues
don't ask much. They state very clearly, no betting on this, this, this,
(31:56):
you can bet on this, this, this make people culpable again.
I am for legal alcohol. There are simple rules. Do
not get bombed in a car. There are places and
times modify, be a moderate drinker, modify your intake. So
you know today is one of those classic days. Is
(32:16):
you should feel guilty.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Not at all.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
I was programbling before today, progambling today, progambling tomorrow. There
are rules, follow them. The rules explicitly tell you don't
do this. And as far as playing poker games downstairs,
good luck, I wouldn't do it.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
I think it's risky. And if you know, if you.
Speaker 1 (32:36):
If you've made a hundred million in your career and
you need poker games to make ends meet, then that's
on you and you, that's not on whatever gambling service
is paying a network. And I've been totally consistent with this. Yeah,
I don't have an obsessive personality. Some people do. But
the rules are clear and they state specifically, don't do this,
(32:59):
don't bet on that.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
It's up to you to figure it out. Don't touch
a hot stove. You learn that when you're five. There
are rules in life.
Speaker 8 (33:06):
What happened to personal responsibility. It's like, listen, I love
the NBA.
Speaker 10 (33:11):
I bet on the Spurs last night, but peanuts, I'm
not going to putting five thousand dollars on an NBA
game in the regular season. If you do that, that's
on you. I mean, we don't know what's happening in
these baseball, basketball, football Like there's a lot of stuff
happening you don't know about. Like the idea that you're
putting that much money on ten thousand dollars on games
come on.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
Really, free societies allow people to make poor choices. Most
people don't, you know, when stories like this come out.
My takeaway is Chauncey Phillips is really in the poker
part of it. There's one player, Terry Roseier, that is
in the basketball part of it, and then I think
Damon Jones is both Terry Rozier, by the way, cleared
(33:53):
by the NBA months ago. So it's not a large
swath of players. It's not star players. And Chauncey Billups
he's on the poker.
Speaker 10 (34:02):
Side unless unless Billups who's who was coaching? Unless that
bleeds in for like you know, tanking or whatever and
saying stuff at poker games, cou. I just want to
remind people, like I think the saying is you can
indict a ham sandwich. You've heard that saying, right, yeah,
that's the phrase, Like that's what this is an indictment. Okay,
let's see what else comes. Maybe these guys are guilty
and they got him dead to rights, or or they're not.
(34:23):
We'll find out. Like you don't have to overreact about
Oh my gosh, gambling's killing sports leagues.
Speaker 8 (34:28):
I'm seeing a lot of that, And I don't know
that I agree with that.
Speaker 1 (34:31):
No, I don't and I never have. And I've had
precious members of the media say I'm disappointed with your take.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Oh, settle down, lighten up.
Speaker 1 (34:40):
It just stopped being so neurotic and anxiety ridden in
the I mean, good god. I was told six months
ago the tariffs will ruin the economy, and my take
was the pandemic didn't. We'll get through attacks, We'll be fine. Okay,
I don't know about that one, but cook, go ahead.
Just the constant needing to it's the end of time.
Speaker 8 (35:00):
Listen.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
It's a weird story.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
The NBA has taken Chauncey Billups, who's in that poker thing,
and Terry Rozier for the time being off. They had
cleared Rosier. Let it play out. They're just an indictment,
they're just accusations. But there's a lot of things I'm
for in moderation or in certain spaces. All these leagues
tell you, don't bet on this, don't say this, don't
(35:24):
do that. There's twelve words I can't use on the air.
I avoid them, and I'm talking every day for three hours.
We've all got rules to a bide binde
