This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Here we go. It is a Monday.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
We are rare and.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
To go live in Los Angeles. Yeah, I got a cold,
but colds are for whimps. Baby who's missing on Monday?
Wherever you may be and however you may be listening,
Thanks for making us part of your day. Jmac, So
you have been on me for about a month with
my devotion to Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and you know,

(00:56):
last year and we talked about this, Kansas City was
a le and Oh in these one score games and
we were like, that's kind of random, brother, Oh and
Ford this year, so let's start with this. Listen, there
is a thread, there is a trend. When Kansas City loses.
It's usually not the defense or a drop pass or

(01:17):
the run game. It's because Patrick Mahomes is uncomfortable. Last night,
Kansas City was terrible on third down, dominated time of possession,
only got sixteen first downs. Mahomes hit fifteen times. This
is why they've been blown out in a couple Super Bowls.
Josh Allen conversely twenty three of twenty six because Josh

(01:41):
Allen was comfortable all night and Mahomes was never comfortable
for three and a half hours. That defensive front Joey Bosa,
that's why they signed him. He's a pain in the
butt and Andy Reid knows it last night. So there
is a way to beat Kansas City when they lose,
and sometimes they lose ugly. Mahomes is getting hit now.

(02:04):
It's not all roses and rainbows for Buffalo. Okay, Kansas
City lost twenty eight to twenty one and had the
ball late trade deadline tomorrow. Buffalo needs to go out
in upgrade. This was an instructive win. Kansas City probably

(02:24):
is just going to get healthier up front, going to
cross their fingers a little.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Buffalo's got a hole. They got a hole.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
But there is a trend when Mahomes this year is
hit seven times or more. They're one in three and
so last night, it's a great example. It felt like
one of those games we've watched them lose in the
Super Bowl where you're just like, he's not comfortable, he
doesn't trust his own line, he lets go with the
ball early, and he still almost pulled it out. But
if you're Buffalo, just think about this. Josh Allen's nearly perfect.

(02:56):
You run for one hundred and forty yards, you're at home,
perfect in the red zone, you dominate time of possession,
you win the turnover battle, and Mahomes had the ball
late going for the tie. So again, not all losses
are awful losses, and not all wins mean you've solved everything.

(03:18):
I watched Buffalo, and my takeaway is, how does Kansas
City have a chance to tie this game? They got
punched into forehead for three and a half hours, and
we're moving the ball down the field. I mean, that
stuff was nightmare fuel for Buffalo late years. They know
they're not going to do it again after they clank
the field goal. So the one thing though we kept
saying last year Kansas City Philadelphia was the best team

(03:41):
last year, I think right now there's an argument the
La Rams are the best team for the second straight year.
The best team's over in the NFC, not the AFC.
AFC's got the better quarterbacks. I think the NFC's got
the better teams. But last year this team was unbeaten
eleven to zero in one score games, and now they're
zero and four. The only team were the Leagues of Texans.

(04:01):
So that's your company. So the last two years Kansas
City's had a hole on that half offensive line. They
had to let go Joe Tooty. This year Joe Totey's
now at Bear. So Buffalo, don't pat yourself in the back.
Howie Rosevean's already made a move. Go upgrade wide receiver,
Go up grade wide receiver. You beat him, it doesn't

(04:24):
mean you're gonna beat him. In January, here's Patrick Mahomes
on the loss.

Speaker 5 (04:29):
We've had great moments, we've had bad moments. We got
to be more consistent as a team. I gotta be
more consistent in that quarterback. We got to be able
to battle. I mean, we've we've kind of been in
all these these tight, close games and our history, but
if they're not going our way now, so how can
we deal with that adversity? How can we be better
and learn from it. I mean, you only learn from
so many losses. I mean you gotta gotta learn from
it fast. And that's bet uphill battle when we get back.

(04:52):
But I think our guys are up to it.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Yeah again, there are not every win solves all your issue.
Choose learn from stuff. I want to talk about the
Chicago Bears. So much in life and in sports is
just getting slightly better. I always tell my kids that
you don't have to take big swings. You can hit
a lot of singles and doubles in life. Just get
a little better. Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears football

(05:18):
operation just keeps getting a little better. They lose that
game last year. Five wins this year already matches last year,
and four of the five.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
Have been ugly.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
They are winning ugly. Who cares they're winning.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Last Friday, I said, I like Chicago in this game
because when Caleb gets a run game like he did
against Dallas or Cincinnati, he's very effective. He doesn't throw picks.
He didn't in high school, he didn't in college, he
doesn't in the NFL. So he's maintained that he's not
throwing picks. They had a run game yesterday. Last year
they were atrocious in one score games. There were three

(05:54):
and seven. This year they're three and one. There is
an art to winning ugly. Kansas City did it last year.
Now you're not going to keep doing it year after
year after year. But Kansas City was great at those
close games. This year they're not for a variety of reasons.
So the Bears offense right now is fourth in the NFL,

(06:15):
believe it or not. And Ben Johnson yesterday four different
Bears through a pass.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
He's gotten into his tricks.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
You know what it tells me when Ben Johnson now
is using more tricks is that Ben Johnson now is
more confident in the base operation. That's what it tells me.
Ben's like, okay, now I can do some tricks. Now
we can get a little fancy. Ben didn't want to
do that quite as much early because he didn't trust
the foundational stuff. But yesterday they ran for over two

(06:42):
hundred and eighty yards. It was a real offense. Now
the defense has major holes. This is not a super
Bowl team. They got to solve the defense. But I
have said before when the season started, I said, do
not get paralyzed by the Chicago Bears win loss record.
I think I had him at eight wins. I said
number one one, you gotta cut the sacks in half. Well,

(07:04):
last year through eight games, twenty nine sacks. This year
they've cut it in half. So again, this is not
rocket science. They're running the ball better, they're taking fewer sacks,
they're winning the turnover battle.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
It's not science.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
A lot of this stuff is can you just look
like a grown up adult business, just improve a little?
And not only year to year of the Bears improved,
but every week now are they're using a few more tricks.
Now they've got a little more confidence. So between Ben
Johnson's brain power and Caleb's brain and horsepower to real

(07:39):
football team, there's gonna be With Caleb, there's gonna be
wow moments. Here's the walkoff touchdown, mostly walk off to
Colston Lovelin.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
But Dounjay Motion's left. They're blitzing.

Speaker 6 (07:52):
It's picked up Caleb Cruz Little the film level touch
picks away the thirty love, the twenty glow, the ten cloves,
the de touchdown bears Coaston Lovelin out of pro by
Caleb Williams on the blitz.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
What's seven de seconds to go.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Now, they shouldn't have needed that touchdown the win because
they gave one up on the other side, as Joe
Flacco throw Fromer's five football Fields. But that's okay. I mean,
yesterday is a great example. I mean, go look at
the Raiders, Jags games. I mean, go look at around
the NFL. The Colts all year pushed people around. Yesterday,
they got they got worked.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
You don't know.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
I mean Denver literally wins only one way in the
fourth quarter, constantly trailing, so you can't worry about it.
The bottom line is this was going to be a shootout.
The Bears defense gives up a ton of yards per
play and the Bengals was atrocious. But so much in
life and in sports is just getting a little better.

(08:51):
There's a lot of singles and doubles out there. That's
to me, what I see from the operation. It's what
I see from Caleb ben Johnson. Now more tricky, has
a little more confidence, more sets, more motion, more looks.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
That's what it looks like to me. Here's Caleb.

Speaker 7 (09:06):
After speaking to coach throughout the week, we knew that
this is an explosive offense.

Speaker 8 (09:13):
They can score at any moment.

Speaker 7 (09:14):
They can score. He's something he said it before the game,
day before the game, or so that you know, we
get up by two touchdowns, don't feel good or comfortable
with the guys after the game. It doesn't matter that
they put up how many ever points they put up.

Speaker 8 (09:25):
We're all excited for this win.

Speaker 7 (09:26):
This is a big moment for us, you know, to
be able to go into this next quarter of the season.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
The one thing I'll always say about Caleb Williams, he
is a thick, strong kid, so he doesn't get hurt
and he doesn't throw a lot of picks. He's got
you know, he's got a big arm for his size.
I'm actually taller than him. He's not a real tall guy,
but you never think about his height because he plays
so big. He's thick, he's got a huge arm. He

(09:54):
plays with a ton of confidence. He missed a couple
of layups yesterday. He missed a couple of easy ones.
He's completing about sixty one percent of his throws. That's
not his bread and butter. He's he's kind of the
opposite of Kirk Cousins. Right, You're not gonna get the
easy stuff, but the ceiling he'll blow through it. You know,
four times a game, but you gotta feel good. They're better,
They've got a quarterback. It's not very often we say

(10:16):
in a Monday I love the Bears offense. I don't
know what's going on in Green Bay. Don't say that
a lot over the last thirty years. But the Bears
offense is getting better and the Packers offense is completely lost.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
And we'll talk about that.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
Jay Mack from the World Series, which is the best
I've ever seen to you know, this league is so funky,
you just like the Colt yesterday totally worked.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
Lions Vikings was weird.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
I have my thoughts on the Packers, and I've always
defended Matt Lafleur, but I'll say this again. I think
the Rams are the best team in the NFC. I
think we pay so much, and I think I think
Howie Roseman, the GM of Philadelphia, making moves.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
He knows it so that Rams win over the Scent. No,
that's not it. When the Saints had the ball for sixteen, No,
what it is?

Speaker 1 (11:09):
Though, in a league of upsets and weird finishes, that
was the most predictable game in the first series on
it was like workman life and the other thing is
the Rams have an identity. The Bears are starting to
find an identity. The Bills last night run the ball,
pass rush, have an identity.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
Packers don't.

Speaker 1 (11:28):
So this is a time of the year where you know,
because these games get close, you don't have a full roster.
Everybody's beat up. There are no perfectly healthy teams. So
what do you do when you're missing five starters? This
is why San Francisco is winning. They have an identity.
They're all beat up. But when you don't have a
full roster or your backup quarterback, Okay, guys, this is
what we are. San Francisco is, Christian McCaffrey, this is

(11:51):
what we are. The Packers don't have an identity. They
didn't punt yesterday. They went up and down the field.
Just a lot of mistakes which led me to believe.

Speaker 9 (11:58):
Remember we talked about it being a game last week
against Aaron Rodgers, next week against the Eagles in primetime,
and this is the lowly Panthers.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
Who Panthers have I think the.

Speaker 9 (12:07):
Same number of wins as the Kansas City Chiefs are
something close to that.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Like the Panthers are they good?

Speaker 10 (12:13):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (12:13):
Then on Friday, I set on Friday show, Watch out
for the Panthers.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
I had a feeling it was a trap game.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
And if you watch Carolina's defense, you know, when you
have high draft picks year after year after year, you
got dudes. Yeah, like they got some receivers now that
Tucker Craft injury for the Packer, Rude, Big one, Rudal
becoming a tight end league two tight Ends, three tight Ends.

Speaker 2 (12:36):

Speaker 3 (13:15):
All right, here we go.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
On Monday, Colin Wright, Colin wrong, plenty of both. Where
Colin was right, I said, when Sam Donald gets drafted
I said he's not Andrew Luck, but he's like eighty
eighty five percent of Andrew Luck. Tough, athletic, big arm.
PFF has him number one third in the passer rating.
Nobody can work with a Jets. That's Siberia. Aaron Rodgers

(13:38):
looked one hundred years old with the Jets. Look at
him now. The bottom line is Sam Donald needed a
better fit. He's just too damn talented to not make
it in this league. And he was sixteen for sixteen
in the first half. I said, not Andrew Luck, but
his comp is somewhere close to Andrew Luck, and it.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
Looks like it.

Speaker 4 (14:00):
Where Colin was wrong.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
I thought Kansas City was the best team in the league.
But it's weird when these two teams play. I feel
like what happened in the game. Before the game, they're
playing ten times, they've met their five and five, gave
up four hundred yards, could not protect mahomes. It felt
like from the first series on, Buffalo had better energy,

(14:24):
better focus, and a better game plan.

Speaker 4 (14:27):
Where's right?

Speaker 3 (14:29):
Okay, I've been saying this.

Speaker 1 (14:30):
Stop telling me about the Steelers defense. Who cares, it's
Aaron Rodgers. They can't run the ball, the offensive line,
pass protections rated very mid. Everybody wants to tell me
about this defense. This team's going as far as Aaron
Rodgers is going to take him. Nine different guys caught
the ball tied for third and touchdown passes. I'm telling

(14:50):
you he has not played this well in my opinion,
since his MVP season. He is moving way way better
than he did in New York. This team is Aaron Rodgers.
It's not Tomlin, it's not the defense. It's Aaron and
right now he's playing like a top ten.

Speaker 4 (15:08):
Quarterback where Colin was raw.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
I love Matt Lafleur, but this team in Green Bay
has no identity, and that's on the coach. They're fifth
in rushing attempts, but twenty fourth in yards per carry.
They want to run, they're not good at it, and
now Tucker Craft's gone.

Speaker 3 (15:26):
For the year.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
I always worry about teams and when they don't have
an identity. They've just got a bunch of good players.
I mean they've lost to Cleveland, Carolina and ty Dallas.
This isn't a lack of talent, it's a lack of
knowing what they are and that's hard to create. Sometimes
harder to maintain. But I do feel like the compass

(15:49):
is off and Green Bay's offense is a little lost
right now.

Speaker 4 (15:54):
Where Colin was right.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
I said this before Game six and seven. Yoshi is
worth every penny because the Dodgers starters there was a
lot of injuries. So he started thirty five games this year. Yeah,
I think the Dodgers starter, their ace is worth three
hundred and twenty five million dollars. He's an unbelievable talent,
four and known the World Series, and everybody gets worked

(16:18):
up with all the money the Dodgers have, but they're
starting pitching this year. I mean they had injuries everywhere
Glass now Snell. So the difference between thirty five million,
you go four and O in a World Series and
went back to back. He has mostly paid for himself.
Where Colin was right, Howie Roseman GM and the Eagles

(16:41):
does it again. He just landed Jalen Phillip from Miami,
good edge rusher for a third round pick. Now he's
a pending free agent. If he leaves, they'll get a
compensatory third round pick. So I've said for years, aggressive
wins in sports, and everybody's talking about the Philadelphia offense
they're twenty third in sack. This is what separates Philadelphia

(17:02):
from a lot of the Cincinnaties of the world.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
They are willing.

Speaker 1 (17:06):
They are on call three hundred and sixty five days
a year to make a deal. And this is a
deal the day before the deadline, and it solves an
issue that nobody's talking about. You better get the stafford
if you want to beat him, You better get to
golf if you want to beat him. Philly's Howie Roseman
goes out and makes a deal. Where Colin was raw,

(17:26):
I like the Commander's direction. I had him winning last night.
I had him as a playoff team. I keep waiting
for the juice and they don't have it. One of
the things that worried me. They're the oldest roster in
the league, the opposite of Seattle or Green Bay. Old
rosters get beat up. They're just not very good and
they're not deep. I think they're much more in a

(17:47):
rebuild than they wanted to admit coming into the season.
And I like them based on the hype some confirmation bias.
They're not a very good team.

Speaker 4 (17:56):
Where Colin was right.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
I've always loved the Miami Hurricanes. They're not a national brand,
and Mario christabal I said earlier this year, I didn't know.
I didn't trust Carson Back. I didn't know if I
trusted him. Mario Christobal is four and eleven in November
and later in Miami, and they lost again this weekend,
this time to SMU Listen. They have a small fan base,
no home field advantage. If you're gonna win national championships,

(18:21):
those late season games, playing at home matters. I love
watching them play. But Christaball at Oregon, his teams were
wildly inconsistent, often struggled as favorites or near favorites on
the road, and this was a.

Speaker 4 (18:34):
Clunker where Colin was right.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
Finally, the Philadelphia seventy six ers are five and one
and not building around Joe lmb.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
I think I've been on this for three years.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
You can't build a franchise around an often injured big.
Instead Tyrese Maxi, who J Mack would confirm, I said
it three years ago. This guy is gonna be a one.
He's averaging thirty four a game. VJ Edgecombe on fire.
They are led by their back court, and by the way,
the Warriors had a pretty good dynasty led by theirs.

(19:08):
I never bought into Embiid. He didn't deliver in the playoffs.
He was off an injured, he struggled even fitting in
with the Olympic team.

Speaker 3 (19:16):
I preached it for years.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
He can be a great player, he can't be the
centerpiece of a championship team.

Speaker 3 (19:22):
Where Colin was right, Where Colin was wrong on a Monday.

Speaker 2 (19:25):
Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd weekdays
and noon Easter, not a em Pacific.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
And with that, Matt Hasselback's got a lot to chew on.
He's bringing us up to date in his stocks. You know,
I said this about the Bills and the Chiefs played
ten times.

Speaker 3 (19:38):
It's five and five. We all know the history.

Speaker 1 (19:41):
But that was a classic example of they go.

Speaker 3 (19:44):
Back and forth. What was the last game? What's this game?

Speaker 1 (19:47):
I just thought, scheme juice energy. It just felt like
Buffalo's night, did it not?

Speaker 4 (19:54):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (19:54):
It did?

Speaker 11 (19:54):
And for whatever reason, this matchup, you know, Buffalo seems
to win all the games in the regular season. In
the second time around in the playoffs, the Chiefs seemed
to win. It reminds me a little bit of what
we did when I was in Seattle or when I
was with the Indianapolis Cold. So I think we did
a great job of this, and I think the Chiefs
do a good job of this. You kind of have
a post game action plan, and so a lot of times,

(20:15):
like after a game, you.

Speaker 8 (20:16):
Just say, hey, let's just flush that. Move on.

Speaker 11 (20:17):
We're on to Cincinnati quote unquote, right. And what we
did is like we would actually spend some time on
Monday mornings and would say, okay, let's talk about what
we would have done differently last night, and you.

Speaker 8 (20:28):
List it all out, the good, the bad, the ugly,
all the.

Speaker 11 (20:30):
Stuff, the stuff that gets you be everything, and then
you know, you play like six or seven weeks or
eight weeks or nine weeks, and you come back to
that action plan of like, hey, what did we say
the morning after? Like, hey, this we should have attacked
number or whatever whatever, you know, we should have ran
the ball more, Hey we got too cute in the
red zone. Hey protection first, Like what, don't let this
guy be a game wrecker? And you know, I think

(20:52):
that those were two things that we did when I
was playing, that we didn't do it on every team
that I was at, and I wish we did. And
it feels to me that Kansas City is always always
different second time around.

Speaker 1 (21:03):
Yeah, so all I said this, never complain in this
league winning ugly on the road, and the Bears are
okay that they would have lost that game a year ago.
They've they've blocked a kick by the Raiders, they got
lucky in a jayde and Daniels fumble. I mean, they
are winning ugly. I don't love it. It's funny. Their
offense is ranked fourth, so they've got skilled, They've got

(21:26):
the coach. Caleb still sometimes with accuracy. Now I will
say this, he does not throw picks. And he's cut
his saxon half. I don't know if that's him or Ben,
but I said going into the year, I said, Matt,
don't get paralyzed by the record. They've got to cut
the saxon half. And Caleb's also never been a big
interception guy. Wasn't in high school, wasn't it usc He's
not in the end even last year we had six.

(21:48):
They're getting better. But as I watched them, I'm like,
I wish it was a little quicker. What do you see?

Speaker 11 (21:55):
Well, I'm sold on Ben Johnson, like I think he's
the real deal. Sometimes when you're a good play caller,
a good coordinator, it doesn't mean you're going to be
a good head coach. And you said, like Caleb's cut
his sex in half. He's done way better than that.
I mean, yesterday he was sacked two times. One was
on him one hundred percent. The other one didn't hurt him.
It was you know, we have a field goal in
the bank, like just protect the ball. I think they're creative,

(22:16):
they're fun, they're dangerous Ben Johnson doing everything that he
did in Detroit. But at the same time, they're physical.
You know, they bring in Assie Trapillo as an extra.
You know, he's a jumbo tight end. He's in an
offensive lineman for the good hard play action shot plays.
And then it's like third and manageable the whole day,
it's like third and five or less. So Caleb's getting
the ball out on time and on rhythm. And so

(22:37):
while we always show the highlights of like the trick plays,
I think the boring stuff where Caleb's really improved is
just like you're saying, protecting the ball, not taking sacks,
helping out the defense, complimentary football. And then just like
how stoic Ben Johnson is the whole time is really remarkable.

Speaker 8 (22:56):
And then on that Loveland touchdown.

Speaker 11 (22:57):
At the end of the game when Cincinnati was allergic
to tackling, they're like, the first guy in the end
zone is Ben Johnson celebrating like yeah, John Travolta or
something on.

Speaker 8 (23:05):
The dance floor.

Speaker 11 (23:06):
It's really cool. And you see him in the locker
room that way. I think, I think the future is
right for Chicago.

Speaker 1 (23:11):
You know, it's interesting so many of these coordinators are
brilliant as the vice president. They're brilliant as the two,
and then they unravel as the one.

Speaker 3 (23:22):
I wonder what it is. It's you know, you were
in this league.

Speaker 1 (23:25):
It's not brain power, but some guys are just naturally
comfortable in front of men and leading. By the way,
a lot of guys are not comfortable a relinquishing responsibility.
I remember talking to Lane Kevin about this year's ago.
Some guys want to be on the headset. Is there
a secret sauce that if you had to go back
in your career on coordinators that make great great head coaches.

(23:46):
Is it a personality thing or a leadership thing.

Speaker 11 (23:50):
Well, it's a lot of things, right, and I think
Ben Johnson didn't jump into it. Too early. He could
have been a head coach a long time ago, and
he said, no, I'm not ready. I want to stick
it out here in Detroit. We're working on something special
and some of it is building your staff, building the
people around you. But no doubt there's an in factor
in my career. I head coaches where early on they
might have been a GA quality control coach, an assistant

(24:12):
position coach.

Speaker 8 (24:13):
They get up in front of the room and like, man,
they just commanded the room.

Speaker 11 (24:16):
Yeah, like there's something special about this guy, a confidence,
and like, yeah, no, you're that guy, as opposed to
the guy that's like, you know, the little professor guy
in the back room, that like, hey, I appreciate your scheme,
but I don't know if you're commanding the locker room.

Speaker 4 (24:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (24:31):
No that.

Speaker 1 (24:31):
We had Ben Johnson on the show very early, and
he had a McVay quality. It's just a guy that
stood up, looked in the eye, handsome guy, had a
command of the room. And to your point, so I
was saying, this is Seattle. It doesn't happen very often.
Standalone game and the home team gets pushed around for
three hours. I look around the NFC, I think Seattle

(24:56):
matches up with everybody, including Philadelphia. I mean, it's they
are a part of Seattle. They could improve.

Speaker 3 (25:02):
Is there a hole in this team that you see, Well,
well for sure.

Speaker 11 (25:06):
I mean every team has things they need to work on,
you know. I think the Seahawks are so good in
so many errors the areas.

Speaker 8 (25:11):
The NFC is very competitive though. I think one of
the best.

Speaker 11 (25:14):
Things they do is that they are they don't flinch
on the road, Like they're almost better on the road
than they are at home.

Speaker 8 (25:19):
Which is a total head scratcher.

Speaker 11 (25:20):
But listen, JSN Sam Donald, those are two of the
best players in the game right now. They're protecting Sam
Donald because of like their heavy play action.

Speaker 8 (25:29):
They're peering like they're going to run the ball.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
I think their.

Speaker 11 (25:31):
Kryptonite might be you have to actually be able to
run the ball when they know that you're going to
run the ball. Everything that they're doing right now is
check with me. It's very very smart. Too many in
the box, we're going to throw it, light box, we're
going to run it. The best teams, you're able to
run it when the defense knows you you're going to
run it. And I think that you know it's a critique,

(25:52):
I guess, But if you're talking about trying to be.

Speaker 8 (25:55):
The one seed or trying to go up and win
the hoist to the Lombardy, that's the kind of step
you got to be able to do.

Speaker 1 (26:01):
So I love bo Nicks. He's on a six game heater.
He's great in the fourth quarter, and everybody tells me
he's no good. JJ McCarthy has his third start. I'm
supposed to say, Wow, he's unbelievable, I said earlier. It
reminded me of the Michigan JJ McCarthy. The defense set
the tone. I love the head coach, and they asked

(26:23):
him to make one or two huge throws in the
second half, and he was very good on script like Michigan.
But if you go second, third, and fourth quarter, he
had a passer writing of thirty eight. So I'm not
going to judge him. It's his third start. But my
take is my concern was when he came out of
Michigan is boy, they don't ask him to do much.
Harbaugh's great, the old line's great, the defense is great.

(26:45):
They're running to close the games out. He never trails
and he makes one big play. I feel like that's
kind of what I saw yesterday? Or am I under
is am I being underwhelmed? Did you see more?

Speaker 8 (26:57):
Now?

Speaker 11 (26:57):
He's a young player, and it was a gritty performance.
He kind of reminds me of myself though early in
my career the training wheels were on.

Speaker 8 (27:03):
I think he completed fourteen passes.

Speaker 11 (27:06):
He had two nice touchdown passes, uh in one bad interception.
But it's a it's a little bit like, hey, we're
just gonna take it slow.

Speaker 8 (27:13):
With you, you know.

Speaker 11 (27:14):
I think he passed for eight first downs yesterday, uh,
and so like they're gonna need more from him, But
he's a young player coming off of injury, and I
think just getting used to the speed of the game.
They like the potential. Unfortunately for him and for the Vikings,
they could have had Sam Darnold, they could have had
Daniel Jones, they could have had Aaron Rodgers. And so
the microscope and the scrutiny is gonna be high. The

(27:35):
guys in your draft class are doing really, really well.
So you're gonna have to grow up really quick. I
think that, you know, stacking these gritty performances in these games,
UH will go a long way for earning respect in
the locker room. And then I think with the coaching staff,
they're gonna give you a little bit more and a
little bit more and a little bit more, and eventually
they're gonna put You're gonna have to put the team

(27:56):
on your back in a Justin Herbert kind of way,
and uh, and that'll come. But but right now, no,
it's you know, all the same stuff we're talking about
with Kleb. You know, like you got to kind of
you got to grow, and you got to not take sacks,
and you got to protect the football and and those
types of things.

Speaker 1 (28:10):
So creating an identity is hard, but it's essential, and
sometimes it's harder to maintain it. I feel like Green
Bay is off, the compass is off. They want to
run it, but they're not terribly effective. They trust Jordan
Love mostly but not entirely. Reed's been banged up now
Craft is out. When I watch them, like I watched

(28:32):
the Rams, I know exactly what they're trying to do.
When I watch the Niners with Christian McCaffrey, I don't
even care about the quarterback.

Speaker 3 (28:38):
I know exactly what they are. Same with Baltimore.

Speaker 1 (28:41):
I watch the Packers, what are they offensively because I
can't figure it out.

Speaker 8 (28:47):
They're really good. They're just young, Colin, they're young.

Speaker 11 (28:50):
It was a trap game, like the definition of a
trap game, like and it happened. They were literally last
week we were talking about they're the best team in
the and the NFC. You know, they took it to
Aaron Rodgers. They like performed Ordan loves as cool as
a cucumber, like all the stuff. And they go into
Carolina and they played like a young team. And listen,
you're gonna make mistakes in the NFL. These guys are human.

(29:12):
This isn't college football. Every game is a tough game.
That's why you celebrate any win that you have. But
when guys go down, you know they lost craft in
the game. Sometimes it can like be like a little
bit of an energy vampire suck on the on the
sideline there because like, man, we're thinking about our brother,
We're not focused on the game. You're gonna make mistakes
in the course of a career and the course of
a season, make new mistakes.

Speaker 8 (29:32):
If you're the Green Bay Packers, you need to learn
from this mistake.

Speaker 11 (29:34):
When you're in a situation like this again, you can't
make this mistake.

Speaker 8 (29:38):
Again. I think they took this team lightly.

Speaker 11 (29:40):
I think Carolina came in and they were professional about it.
Green Bay learned from this and and and you know,
for them, you know, hopefully they're a lot better for it,
because really the one seed was there for them never.
But now now the division is is very, very tight,
so you know, look out. I still like this team,
though I'm not giving up on them.

Speaker 8 (29:58):
They just got to learn from it.

Speaker 1 (30:00):
Finally, you are at one point an old quarterback. It
is remarkable to watch Darnold and Aaron Rodgers outside of
the Jets. I said, they don't run the ball in Pittsburgh.
The defense was good yesterday, but it's got holes all
over it. I just I watch Aaron and I'm like,
I thought it was a one. I said, you should
go to the Vikings or retire. Pittsburgh's terrible in offense.

(30:24):
Whether he's great or not, I do feel like there
is something to be said about loving your job, loving
the environment, and playing a little bit with joy. I
feel like Aaron's like happy erin and there's kind.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
Of two errands.

Speaker 1 (30:37):
But when I watch him, I'm like, I didn't think
he had much left in the tank and I'm like, oh,
he should play again, this should be he should he
should be a two off win a playoff game. Are
you surprised a little bit? Look there's a little fout
in the youth in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 11 (30:52):
Well I think a little bit surprised, But I'm not
surprised that it's working so well with Mike Tomlin and
with Arthur Smith. I'm really not in the leadership and
the you know, like the I mean, he can still
sling it, he can still throw the ball. He's very
impressive that way. Their division's not very good. Like I
think we thought Cincinnati was going to be better. I
think we thought Baltimore is going to be better. But

(31:13):
as it sits right now, I mean, Pittsburgh's in position
to host a playoff game, and their defense came alive
creating turnovers. I just think that there's there's still a
lot of room for improvement for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He
won by seven and the Colts had like six turnovers,
So like, you got to find ways to be more dominant.
I'd like to see them run the ball more. I'd
like to see them run the ball more when they're

(31:34):
down in the tight red zone, not rely on you know,
the Aaron Rodgers DK Metcalf show go line fades or
slants like there's more to like there when need consistency
from that from that defense, you know, I think they
could get it. I actually like the fit. I like
that Aaron Rodgers a future Hall of famers kind of
with a NFL royalty type organization.

Speaker 8 (31:54):
I think it's great for football.

Speaker 11 (31:56):
But I think my big question is, like Ken Baltimore
jump back.

Speaker 8 (32:00):
Into this mix.

Speaker 11 (32:01):
If Pittsburgh falters, like can somebody else compete with them?

Speaker 8 (32:04):
Or are they just going to run away with with
this division?

Speaker 1 (32:07):
I want to circle back final question. I think sometimes
when you win a game, it becomes instructive. Like if
I was Pittsburgh, I consider trade deadline running back. I
think Buffalo needs another wide out. I do wonder when
you're a very good team, you're running the football, You've
got a very close locker room with Josh Allen, and
all of a sudden we bring in a wide receiver,

(32:29):
would you be concerned Because receivers come you know that
of all the positions.

Speaker 3 (32:34):
They you know they're on an island. You get very
unique personalities.

Speaker 1 (32:37):
I think Buffalo needs another I mean that game was
twenty eight twenty one in Kansas City had the ball
and Mahomes was awful and Buffalo dominates time possession. They're
at home, perfect in the red zone, won the turnover battle.
Kansas City was going in for the tie. I think
they need to add a little icing to the cake.
Would you do it with the worry that it could

(32:58):
disrupt harmony or chemt.

Speaker 8 (33:01):
I would do it. And here's why.

Speaker 11 (33:02):
You know, when when I entered the NFL, I was
with the Green Bay Packers, Mike Hombrim's head coach. They're
coming off of two consecutive Super Bowls, and he was
very very clear, this organization will always search the planet
for anyone that we think can make our team better.
So like, don't look at who you're competing with in
the locker room, because we're searching the planet. And if

(33:22):
we ever bring somebody in, it's because we are trying
to hoist the Lombardi.

Speaker 8 (33:26):
And as a.

Speaker 11 (33:26):
Player, even though I was one of the guys that.

Speaker 8 (33:28):
Like was now replaceable, I loved it.

Speaker 11 (33:31):
It just felt like, Hey, this organization is all the
way in, all the way in, and therefore I'm going
to be all the way in and I better be
all the way in or I'm going to get replaced myself.
I like when it as a player, I don't mind
the mindset at all.

Speaker 8 (33:44):
I really don't. And you know, like it might hurt.

Speaker 11 (33:46):
Somebody's feelings, but for the for the entire locker room,
I think it's a great thing. Sends a message, and
I think it's a really good message.

Speaker 1 (33:53):
Matt hasselback eighteen years in the NFL. He is our
Monday guest every Monday to in the footballs and beyond
as all.

Speaker 3 (34:01):
As Matt, thank you.

Speaker 8 (34:02):
See.

Speaker 3 (34:04):
Yeah, it's I just.

Speaker 1 (34:05):
It's one of those things where I'm sitting there watching
that game last night and I'm like, Kansas City's.

Speaker 3 (34:10):
Going for the tie?

Speaker 1 (34:11):
How they got I mean, Mahomes got hit fifteen times?

Speaker 3 (34:14):
How are they going for the tie?

Speaker 9 (34:16):
I'm surprised you haven't played that well. They didn't have
Isaiah Pacheco. You know, it's always like, hey, no Zavi,
you're worthy, no Rashid, Right, they were fully formed last night.
They just didn't look great when they're not playing the
dumpster Fire Raiders or Marcus Mariota and the Commanders who.

Speaker 8 (34:31):
Look like a joke.

Speaker 9 (34:32):
Now they've now loft on the road to the Bills
and the Jags. And three weeks ago you didn't have
the Bills in the Hurt hierarchy.

Speaker 3 (34:38):
Did you.

Speaker 9 (34:39):
It's a slight very interesting how things are shifting the sands.

Speaker 3 (34:44):
I'm in the Hurd hierarchy tomorrow. Everybody's waiting. How far
do you drop? The chiefs? Are they eight nine? What
are we doing? Well, that's not a one that's obvious. Well,
rams are good. Do that. It's like four weeks in
a row. Rams are broncos.

Speaker 9 (34:57):
Basically you have to do Admit you love it that
all your guys are thriving, your Donald Chargers, darning all
of our their career years.

Speaker 8 (35:07):
It's crazy.
