Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Hello, and welcome to the Herd.
Speaker 4 (00:29):
It's a lovely Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
That's right.
Speaker 4 (00:34):
It's me Jason MacIntyre coming out of the bullpen to
fill in for the injured, struggling Colin Cowherd. He's down
for the count with some sort of cough, sneeze flu deal.
You know, hey, listen, when the weather church cold in Chicago,
it's tough. You gotta get a jacket. I guess Colin's
gonna have to buy one now. He'll be back tomorrow,
(00:54):
he promises. You got eleven hours sleep, And you know,
things line up perfectly because I get to fill in
and you.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Know what I'm talking about the.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
New York Football Jets for three straight hours. Joined today
by the Great Rachel Nichols. Rachel not as excited about
the Jets as I am.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
But it is james Big Night today in Los Angeles.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
Obviously, the Lakers hosting Victor Webbin Yama.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Rachel will be there.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
I'm efforting tickets as we speak, but we'll hopefully have
a great night. But Rachel, we got to start with
the NFL. And as a long suffering Jets fan, don't
ask me how I got into being a Jets fan.
Speaker 5 (01:32):
I was born in New.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
York, family moved to DC, and I decided I don't
want to root for these Washington at the time Redskins.
Let me go to my hometown routs the New York
Jets and folks, it's been a long time since we've
had anything to cheer about.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
And then on NFL trade.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
Deadline Day, it becomes basically the greatest day in franchise
history for anyone under the age of fifty. Obviously, you
know the Jets one with Joe Namath the way back
in the day. Colin loves to reference those days. I don't,
I don't know them. They're foreign to me. So as
a Jets fan, the reason I'm celebrating is the trades.
You know, it wasn't working with the defensive strategy, as
(02:09):
is often the case in the NFL. We'll talk about
that later with a couple great guests, but they're going
offense and they have moved off Sauce Gardner, the great
cornerback who was an All Pro in his first two seasons,
and Quinn Williams he shipped to Dallas. Folks, it is
a celebratory day if you're a Jets fan. This season's
gonna be tough. I saw one of these who won
(02:30):
the trades. The twenty twenty five Jets are listed as losers.
They're gonna stink this season.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
We're one and seven.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
Yes, I could say we and maybe we win a
couple games, but it's not about this year.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
It's for the future, because, folks, we rich.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
We got a war chest of picks in the next
two drafts.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Okay, we got two.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
First rounders and a second in twenty twenty six, and
look at that twenty twenty seven. I mean they're loaded
three first round picks. Now, I know you guys are
all over draft boards like I am. Yeah, you know
what they're saying. Twenty twenty six draft, it's fine, it's good.
Twenty seven maybe the greatest NFL draft ever headlined by
(03:10):
obviously the great mister Smith at Ohio State, and.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Who knows about maybe Archie Manning is a superstar at
that point.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
But to recap the trades, the teardown, oh wait, it's
not a teardown. Let's go to Jets GM Darren Mooji.
Speaker 6 (03:26):
I wouldn't call it a teardown.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
And the goal is always to win.
Speaker 6 (03:29):
Look, these coaches and players work too hard every day
all day with the goal of winning on Sunday, and
that never changes because that's what the fans deserve, that's
what the players are, that's what the coaches are, and
that never changes.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
Well said, I learned out who Darren Muji was basically yesterday.
He's been anonymous, hasn't been in the role that long.
But I don't want to look too much at the past. Okay,
you know, as my son likes to say, trust Dad, trust,
I'm trusting in the future. Guys, the past is a
place of reference, not residents. You don't want to live
(04:05):
in the past, you can reference it, and I'm gonna
do that right now. I'm gonna bring up a certain
Detroit Lions team that you know, not too long ago
had a terrible run. Then they trade for Jared Goff
fixed the offensive line, and they start to figure things out,
and they hire a gentleman by the name of Dan Campbell.
Dan Campbell will kind of rough around the edges. Had
(04:25):
to develop a culture in Detroit. These things aren't built overnight.
And if you remember, in twenty twenty two, the Lions
start one to six and everybody's scoffing at Campbell. I
may have been in that group. And then they turn
things around and they end up nine to eight. And
in the twenty twenty three draft, the Detroit Lions had
four picks in the first forty five, four in the
(04:47):
first forty five off a nine and eight season. Folks,
they hit a grand Slam home run in that twenty
twenty three draft, Jamiir Gibbs, who people were like, hey.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Well Jamir running back that early? I don't know.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
Then they got the kid Campbell, the linebacker. Come on,
these are not premium positions, Detroit, what are you doing?
And then in the second round, this is when they
made too great picks. Sam Laporta, the tight end who's
playing in an All Pro level, and Brian Branch who
wasn't All Pro last season four picks, four major hits.
They made the jump to light speed the next season
(05:23):
twelve and five, last year fifteen and two. You can
turn things around quickly with the right draft picks. And
I can already hear you shouting at your radio or
your TV. J Mack, come on, the Jets don't have anything. Actually,
the infrastructure is kind of sort of there. We're just
not seeing the results yet. And oh, by the way,
you guys know, Aaron Glenn came from Detroit, right he
(05:46):
was on that Dan Campbell's staff. Saw what Dan Campbell
instilled as a culture. It takes some time. These things
must bake. You've got to give them time. And I
hope that the Jets give Aaron Glenn time because frankly,
I don't know if they're going to go and take
Fernando Mendoza, the kid out of Indiana with the number
one pick.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
By the way, I love Fernando Mendoza.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
I learn more about him on his linked in page
than I did his IG. Yeah, I want my quarterback
who's updating his LinkedIn page.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
He already graduated from business school.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
He's getting a second master's in business at Indiana.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
And oh, By the way, he's one of the Heisman favorites.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
I mean, this guy's a genius, a six foot five
quarterback winning from the pocket, had multiple offensive coordinators. Listen,
I'm starting to buy into Fernando Mendoza. But here's the
beauty of having options like the Jets have. If he's
not your guy, and you realize it, we like him,
we don't love him.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Huh.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
Is it possible that maybe we go with the Giants strategy.
We get a defensive player early, and at the end
of the first round we find a quarterback.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
It's looking good for Jackson Dart in New York.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
All right, let's pivot to one of the teams that
traded with the Jets yesterday, and that's the Dallas Cowboys,
led by their carnival barker of an owner Jerry Jones. Guys,
I know a lot of Cowboys fans. They are long
suffering like the Jets. I mean, they haven't been to
an NFC championship, longest drought in the NFC.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
It's bad, it's bleak. But oh, by the way, some
people in Dallas are applauding Jerry's move yesterday to grab
Quiddy Williams from my jets.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
Me in the morning meeting.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
I'm catching strays all over the place. These guys are like,
I like what Dallas did. I like what Jerry did. Really,
you guys like Jerry Jones saying, yeah, we got Micah Parsons, who,
by the way, two years ago was a like the
focal point of an incredible defense that went fourth in
the league.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Yes, that's right.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
In Mike McCarthy's great twelve twelve win season two years ago,
the Dallas defense, led by Micaeh was fourth in the league.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
But last year Dak gets hurt.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
The backup quarterbacks can't do anything, the defense crumbles, suffers injuries,
and they're terrible. So let's move off Michaeh. Let's not
pay him. Nine games into the season. Oh my gosh,
our defense is a tire fire. Let's go get Quinn Williams.
What are we doing?
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Here's Jerry Jones on making it up on the fly
on the radio yesterday.
Speaker 7 (08:11):
I don't have time personally to have a bad time.
It's not on my schedule, and so I have a
natural urgency because of my age, and so tomorrow's the immediate.
Tomorrow are a big thing to me, and I also
have enough discipline not to get in trouble for years
(08:36):
to come.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
Oh my gosh, Cowboys fans, are you following? I mean
you got whiplash a listening to your owners last GM
and be following all these moves.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
And here's the crazy part.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
If you look in totality at the Micah deal and
the Quinn Williams deal, that they didn't get that much
for Michaeh Persons, who's basically had one of the best
runs of any defensive player in the history of the NFL.
That ain't hyperbole.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Those are facts. I mean, go look at what Michaeh
Parsons has done in his career. He's been unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
I love Quinn Williams. I hyped the hell out of
him when he was with my Jets. Well, now that
they've traded him, I'm ready to be objective and say, oh,
he's had a really good career six seasons, one zero
pro he's the elite at his position. Well, he's certainly
not top five. He's been great against the run, and
that's what Dallas wants him to do. Find Okay, great,
(09:30):
I don't know how that helps your secondary and ninety
two million dollar man, mister Bland, who's still on his
rear end after getting cooked by.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Marvin Arison Monday night.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
I mean, listen, this Dallas defense is a laughing stock
and Jerry Jones is just making it up on the fly.
I mean, forget about plans. If you're not planning, you know,
what are you doing? And then you hear the owner
saying that's not on my timeline. We had to turn
it around real quick. I don't I know that everybody
was excited about Dallas at times this season, and i'
(10:00):
I've taken the bait.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
I'm not gonna lie. I fell for it.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
You know, when they were able to put up forty
on the Packers and look good, it's like, oh, maybe
there's something here.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
But then you drill.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
Down a little bit, like, oh, defense got destroyed by
Caleb Williams and they just got dog walked by Jacoby Brissett.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Did you see that stat?
Speaker 7 (10:18):
Guys?
Speaker 4 (10:19):
The Arizona Cardinals were the only team in the league
not to have a drive over seventy four yards in
the season. Jacoby Brissette had two of those back to
back for touchdowns against Dallas Monday night. Like at that point,
I'm sure Jerry sees it. It's like, oh, we got
to overpay for Quinn Williams. Let's remember, by the way,
as in a side on the Jets, apparently Mouji wasn't
(10:41):
making calls for quinnin and sauce, he's fielding calls. So
Jerry reactionary as ever to his defense, getting embarrassed by
Jacoby Brissett, says, oh, man, we got we gotta go
get Quentinn Williams. Like that's not how you want to operate.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
What are we doing?
Speaker 4 (11:00):
Like something wacky happens this next month, Like, oh, we
got to apply it to next offseason. Like it's just
not how you're They're not a serious football program right now.
I mean they haven't been for years. I just cannot
fathom how Dallas fans are dealing with this. I'm all
excited because the Jets have moved off players. Meanwhile, Jerry
Jones is tinkering, thinking, oh, we got something, have you.
(11:23):
I don't know if we can call up the Dallas
schedule here, but have you guys seen what they've got
coming up?
Speaker 3 (11:28):
This idea that Quinn's going to help them to the
playoffs is laughable. They got a three.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
Game stretch here Eagles, Chiefs, Lions, and by the way,
the Vikings and Chargers are not Chop Liver. So this
team's not going to playoffs this year. And if you
want to sell me on, hey, Jay, I think it's probably.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
For next year.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
Okay, that's not a bad idea. Can I ask you
what are you doing with Pickens on the outside. He's
in a contract year. Are you suddenly paying him big
money to be you? The t Higgins to Lamb's jamar
ch Is that what we're doing? So we're going to
become Bengals NFC, because that's what it feels like. I
(12:06):
just feel like there's no plan in place. Planning is invaluable,
and I don't think Jerry does that. It feels to
me like he's making it.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Up on the fly.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
So I know I've opened the show with a lot
of positivity followed by some negativity. We'll do plenty of positive.
Rachel's here, obviously, and we are excited.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Rachel. I am just curious before we go to break here.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Jerry Jones reactionary, Hey, we need to do this now,
not on my timeline. You hear that as a Cowboys fan,
and I know you're a Washington fan, I'm excited.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Do not call me a Cowboys fan.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
Come on, But as a Washington fig you hear that,
you're like, oh heck, yeah, I love this.
Speaker 8 (12:46):
I mean, look, what did Jerry say that he's old?
So you know his timeline is not necessarily the Cowboys timeline.
I saw this as a trade for next year. Honestly,
the Cowboys have issues in their secondary. This is not
going to fix everything, but it will set the more
on the right track than they currently are. So that's okay.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
I enjoy the six wins this year. Seven Maybe Cowboys
fans all right? Coming up next?
Speaker 4 (13:07):
Did an AFC team, mister win? Do they make a
mistake not making a move. We'll talk about that next
on The Herd.

Speaker 7 (13:55):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
Back here on the Herd. Got some great guests coming up.
Joel Klatt top of Next Hour.
Speaker 4 (14:02):
Cannot wait to talk to him about all the quarterbacks
the Jets will be sifting through to find.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Hopefully they're hidden gem in the draft, folks. That's why
I'm optimistic. It's fun.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
Like there's optimism right see. Rakes are laughing over there,
Like listen, I'm giddy.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
It feels like Christmas and I'm like eleven years old
and there's presence everywhere. It's like, yes, what's in there?
Speaker 8 (14:22):
I just love that there is no story you cannot
tie to the Jets.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
Yes, yes, yes, And I know the Jets are like
a no fly zone because they stink and nobody cares.
But when you're passionate about something, hey, let's rock with it.
Let me quickly talk about the Indiana Indianapolis Colts because
they're kind of all in.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
You guys. I like to play poker occasionally.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
You know, you think you can bluff your way to
a big haul, or maybe you just are.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Like, you know what, I'm sick of this on bored.
I'm going home just a friendly poker game. I'm going
all in.
Speaker 4 (14:54):
The smart people and the smart poker players, and the
smart NFL T means usually draft and develop and maybe
supplement a little bit through free agency and trades. Right,
draft and develop is a way to go. And if
you looked at the deadline yesterday, a lot of the
content the major contenders did nothing, and you're like, oh,
(15:15):
that's that's kind of interesting.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
But you have a team like the Colts taking a
big swing.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
And I had a Colt buddy who texted me and
was like, this is so out of character for Ballard.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
He basically has drafted and developed with the Colts.
Speaker 4 (15:28):
He hasn't done much of Hey let's make a big,
huge swing, give up draft picks.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
And so I'm like, what do you think this is about? Now?
One of the guys on staff.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
Has tried to talk me into this topic, not really
talk me into, but he's brought it up, and it's
interesting talked about all my podcasting with others.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
The Colts new owner.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
Is now like on the sideline wearing a headset, taking
notes and she's not saying much.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
She's just very involved.
Speaker 4 (15:55):
And I've workshopped a couple ideas about what's going on
because the media hasn't really gotten much out of her.
She did have some great quotes recently, but it's like, hmm,
I wonder is Chris Baller saying, damn, we got one
playoff win in the last ten years. Daniel Jones is
playing out kicking his coverage here, he's playing way above
(16:15):
his above the rim.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
He's doing awesome. Hell, Ravens don't look formidable. They had
the Lamar injury.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
Chiefs are they dominant? J Max out here on TV
say they're not going to the playoffs? Bill's shucks. They
got smacked by the Falcons. Is this our year? Can
we pull this off? Should we go all in? And
it's a fascinating question, you guys know, because a part
of an ownership group of a soccer team in the
top Mexican league, I love team building and moving the
(16:45):
chess pieces around and it's not easy. And you see
the Colts and I just want was this interrational move
by them? Or does this make them legit contenders? Because
I'm gonna be honest, with.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
You if you go by Vegas and you says, playing
the playoffs, all they're paying the Chiefs, they're going to
be underdogs, even if they're at home.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
Oh, the culture playing the Bills, they're going to be underdogs.
What about the Ravens. Yeah, same deal.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
And by that metric, it's like, should you have gone
all in?
Speaker 4 (17:14):
Because let's be real, this Daniel Jones deal one year,
fourteen million dollars. You guys, remember what happened with Daniel
Jones had success in New York. He wasn't even this
good in New York, but they got to the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
He didn't make a lot of mistakes, and they beat
the Vikings.
Speaker 4 (17:31):
Then he wanted to contract negotiations and he said he
wanted all the money. The stories about what was going
on at that table pretty legendary. And guess what, the
Giants bent over backwards and gave it to him within
about a couple months.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
Oh what did we do? We can't afford Saquon?
Speaker 4 (17:48):
And then Daniel takes the field and the next season
they were terrible and it's like goodbye, couldn't run him
out of town quick enough. So I know he's had
a rejuvenated season, if you will. But what if this
is eight weeks of fools gold and what we just
saw against Pittsburgh is probably closer to the real Danny Dimes.
And by the way, how about the name change he
(18:09):
went from Danny Dimes. I started calling him Danny loose change.
And now he has rebranded in India as Indiana Jones.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Okay, and we'll see how that works out. So I
like sauce Gardner. I think he's gonna fit in Captain
Lew's defensive scheme heavy zone.
Speaker 4 (18:25):
I mean, with his length and instincts, I mean, Sauce
Gardner is gonna do well. But as I alluded to yesterday,
like they're gonna be facing the Bills in the playoffs,
so is he like, Hey, we're gonna erase this side
of the field, all right? I mean, Bill's got great
tight ends underneath slot receiver, Like, there's nobody you need
to remove from from the Bills. Same deal with the Ravens.
(18:46):
The Chiefs have Versh Rice. But I don't know that
he's a one yet.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
Guys.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
He's a one of my fantasy team, that's for sure.
But I just have some questions about the Colts. I
do applaud them. We're close, we're going all in. I
do I respect that. Remember the Jets, see Rachel, She's right.
I'm gonna bring it back to the Jets. They were close,
they go all in. Aaron Rodgers, I didn't I wanted
something else, but when they did go all in, I
(19:09):
supported it. Then Rogers gets hurt.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
It ends quickly, but.
Speaker 4 (19:13):
I ultimately do not believe this will lead to much
for the Colt And now you're gonna have to probably
overpay Daniel Jones. He's not gonna want some bargain basement
twenty five thirty million dollars a year deal. He's gonna say, listen,
I was one of the best quarterbacks you've had in
the last decade, says Andrew luck Left.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
What else you got, You're gonna go get Kyler Marie Now, Shane.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
Here's Shane Steichen, by the way, on the radio this
morning on the Indianapolis trade.
Speaker 10 (19:39):
Obviously, I'm really excited about adding Sauce Gardner to our
football team. You know, his resume speaks for itself, pro bowler,
all pro. So to get a guy into the building
like that, it just elevates everybody around us. So really
excited to add him to the fold.
Speaker 4 (19:56):
By the way, Gardner was all pro the first two years.
Last year he struggled. You could argue that they were
a sinking ship. He was unhappy this year when targeted.
He's got a passer rating allowed of one to eighteen.
Speaker 5 (20:08):
Not great.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
Now again you could argue sinking ship jet steak. He
was checked out. Okay, I'll buy that, but good luck
with that Coltz.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in noon Easter nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
Let's got to Rachel Nichols with the news.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
No, no, no, turn on the news. This is the
Herd Line News.
Speaker 8 (20:32):
Jason, this isn't a jet story, so I'm sorry about that.
But JJ McCarthy stepped in against the Lions. He was sidelined,
remember with that ankle injury for five weeks. He looked
the part. McCarthy accounted for three total touchdowns helped Minnesota
stop a two game losing streak. But here's the spice.
After the game, JJ posted this on his Instagram with
(20:53):
the caption quote kneecaps are intact, which seems to be
a shot at Dan Campbell's famous biting the kneecaps quote, right,
remember that? Yeah, I guess we should also note that
JJ blew out his knee and his rookie years, so
you know, they could maybe make the case it was
about that. But I gotta personally, I think this is
(21:14):
a shot at Campbell. What do you expect to see
from McCarthy in the Viking Sire?
Speaker 3 (21:19):
I kind of like that. Rachel's weird. He's had three.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
Starts and we're supposed to like render a verdict if
he can't play or he can't play, we need to
let it.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
Bake just a little, right.
Speaker 4 (21:30):
I mean, they got a tough one this weekend against
the Ravens. They're at home, and I'm seeing Baltimore's favor
by four in Minnesota.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
Ravens defense isn't great. Do you think McCarthy is the
guy there or do we just we don't know yet.
Speaker 8 (21:43):
I think he could be could be great.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
I mean Harball loves him.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
Yeah, yeah, I think they're gonna be fine with JJ McCaw.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
I don't know if he's going to duplicate Donald's numbers
from last year.
Speaker 8 (21:54):
Yeah, especially Donald's having success crushing it in Seattle, you
have to live up to all right, let's talk a
little Warriors Jimmy Butler left yesterday's win against the Suns
with lower back soreness. Now, Butler came into that game questionable.
He ended up playing, but then he tweaked his back
during the game didn't return after halftime. Jimmy is currently
(22:16):
considered questionable again for the Warriors game tonight against Sacramento. Meanwhile,
Jason Draymond Green is unlikely to pay on the second
night of a back to back. Steph Curry has already
been ruled out with illness, maybe the same thing Colin has.
I don't know, Maybe they've been hanging out together.
Speaker 3 (22:32):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (22:33):
I can say. Look, it's obviously early, but the Warriors
sit in sixth right now in the West. Do you
have concerns? I mean, this is a much older roster
and we're already seeing, oh I have to sit out
after our back to back or some injuries that kind
of thing. I mean, a back injury, that's an old
man injury obviously.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (22:50):
Yeah, I Where do you stand on this whole sitting
out on back to backs? Because they had Austin Reeves
and Luca do it with the Lakers. They're not at
the same age as Steph Curry and Dremondrie.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
I have no problem with this. And I know, like
a lot of people are like, oh, you got to play.
Michael Jordan's out here talking about how you got to
play eighty two games, Like that's dumb.
Speaker 4 (23:12):
I want to see Steph Curry playing meaningful games. Sorry,
not November fifth against the Sacramento Kings.
Speaker 3 (23:17):
On a back to back.
Speaker 8 (23:18):
Yeah, and you know they purposely sometimes they're like, oh,
it's a back to back and it's against the Sacramento Kings.
We're going to dray Ron take a seat. I'm okay
with it because you want a guy as close to
one hundred percent as you can get every time he's
out on the floor. And if you feel like back
to backs put him into some sort of risk because
of his age, because of you know, injuries, because of anything,
(23:40):
don't do it. It's not worth it.
Speaker 5 (23:42):
It's not worth.
Speaker 8 (23:42):
Missing the guy missing the next month or two.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
Yeah. I only watch a little Warriors.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
I'm more interested in, like, you know, Lakers, Rockets, a
couple of other teams, But what have you seen every
time I look at the box Score. They're playing like
twelve guys. They're playing so many, they're lessening the minutes.
For Curry, it feels like good strategy, damn from.
Speaker 8 (24:00):
Yeah, I absolutely think so. Look, he knows they're an
older team. Yeah, they want to make a long playoff run.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
Steph.
Speaker 8 (24:06):
Curry's window is closing. This is sort of the last
ride with Butler, with these other guys, and he wants
to make it all count. And he's getting more production
from a lot of these guys than he did last season.
And look, Jimmy Butler, you might be sitting out tonight
with a back injury, but he's there's been thirty one
regular season games since he got there. He's played in
thirty of them, So we maybe are talking about old
(24:28):
man injuries.
Speaker 3 (24:29):
But I listened to a record good with Butler, Curry, Yeah,
with the whole group.
Speaker 8 (24:33):
Yeah, all right, let's move over to Cooper flag Boy
with the MAVs. You know, Cooper is still finding his
way in the league. The Mavericks are off to a
rough start. Kevin Durant, though, after a recent game, said
don't worry. The future is still bright for the rookie.
Take a listen.
Speaker 11 (24:52):
I just think it's always good for young players to
just be thrown into the fire.
Speaker 7 (24:56):
Just go clear.
Speaker 11 (24:56):
Oh, Jake, here is an incredible coach that no the
game and so now as a player and as a coach,
so you know, no matter what position here, I think
he's just a basketball player is only going to get better.
Speaker 8 (25:10):
Kadi went on to say that he really feels for
Cooper Jason because Cooper's playing at guard after spending his
whole time prior to that at forward. Remember k D
came into the league in college. He played the four
of the five, and then he came into the NBA
into two, so he knows that that's that's a real adjustment.
You've been hiring Cooper Flag. What do you think of
(25:31):
all this?
Speaker 4 (25:32):
It's the narrative, and I try not to pay too
much attention to what else is going on in the media.
Sometimes it's impossible with social media.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
The narrative is Cooper Flag, ain't it? Oh this Jason?
You said, this guy's gonna be all NBA. He's nothing.
We don't want. How old is he? Rachel eighteen? He's
eighteen years old? What are we doing?
Speaker 4 (25:49):
He's got the worst plus minus since I think since
Lebron as a rookie when he was eighteen or maybe
he was nineteen.
Speaker 8 (25:55):
How did that work out?
Speaker 3 (25:57):
It's gonna be fine. I think the bigger story is
what's going on with Anthony Davis. I mean, like Cooper
Flag is gonna be okay?
Speaker 4 (26:04):
Ad Nico Harrison, where's my guy, super Max Christy?
Speaker 3 (26:09):
What's he doing?
Speaker 4 (26:10):
I mean, Rachel, if I'm Cooper Flag, I'm begging Kyrie
to come back. But it sounds like I think you
said he's like.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
This hope that.
Speaker 4 (26:16):
Oh Kyrie's killing in practicing. Yeah, it's not like he's
coming back.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
In a month or two or three.
Speaker 9 (26:20):
No.
Speaker 8 (26:20):
No, no, end of the season, maybe not at all
this season. And remember Nico, when he made the trade,
the Luca trade, he put the Mavericks on a much
tighter timeline, right, So trading for a player in Anthony Davis,
who is six years older than Luca. He said he
thinks the championship window was in the next three years
after the Luca trade. That's part of this pressure on
(26:42):
Cooper Flag, right, because if you feel like these seasons
are dwindling down when you have promised to deliver.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
A title, Yeah, I mean.
Speaker 8 (26:50):
You gotta stick Cooper at guard because he is the
best playmaker that you have out there right now. With
everyone else injured, it's not necessarily what's best for Cooper.
Speaker 4 (27:00):
Those are rough stats you see on the screen, thirty
eight percent shooting, thirty percent for three. But he's an
eighteen year old rookie and their best well I guess
their best players A d or Kyrie, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (27:11):
But bottom line is two of their best three players
are out. Yeah, like you can't expect much from him.
Speaker 4 (27:15):
I think Cooper Flag is going to be fine. I
wonder if Nico Harrison is going to be fine. But
we will see the other time for another day, all right, read.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
So with the news.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
Herd line.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
News all right.
Speaker 4 (27:33):
Coming up next, we're gonna go to Vegas. Details on
did any of these NFL moves move the needle on
Super Bowl contenders?
Speaker 3 (27:42):
We'll talk about that next.
Speaker 7 (27:47):
One.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
More Heard. The Herd streams twenty four hours a day,
seven days a week. Within the iHeartRadio app, search Herd
to listen live or on demand whenever you like.
Speaker 4 (27:59):
Here we go our number two here on the Herd.
Gorgeous Wednesday, tons of news college football, NFL obviously, a
little NBA action. It's me Jason McIntyre in for an
under the weather coward. He did text me within the
last hour, so there is proof of life that he's alive.
Speaker 3 (28:19):
He said, he's expected that, Maniana. If not, you know,
I'm just have to carry the show with the help
of the great Rachel Nichols. And it's official. Rachel and
I will be at the Lakers game together, not together tonight,
will be there.
Speaker 4 (28:32):
Rachel obviously has better connections than I do.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
Maybe otter seats.
Speaker 8 (28:36):
I'm gonna live.
Speaker 4 (28:37):
Yeah, you better see you were at the paper Clips
against Shake Gildess, Alexander and Okay see last night doubt and.
Speaker 7 (28:43):
That was that. Man.
Speaker 8 (28:44):
The Oklahoma City Thunder have not missed a step despite
the fact they are missing their second best player. They're
undefeated and they don't even have Jada right now. So
it looks like, you know, a lot of people after
it took seven games to win the finals were like,
I don't know, it's right opening again next year. I
don't know, man, They're young players, they have experienced now
(29:04):
and they Shay said at the beginning of season, we're
only going to be better at this season.
Speaker 3 (29:08):
And he's right, so I was the free throw merchant.
What did he do last year? I'm just kidding, O
case answer man.
Speaker 4 (29:14):
They don't love me, but yes, you guys are dominant, undefeated.
I will apologize, you know when it's due time, all right,
coming up in five minutes.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
I guess Joe claud will be here. Very excited.
Speaker 4 (29:25):
Fun fact, I've never sat and just had a one
on one with Klatt for a while because you know,
it's what coward does.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
And I'm very.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
Excited to talk to him a lot of tough, hard
hitting questions about my jets, but real quick, briefly, I
want to talk about what did not happen at the
trade deadline yesterday. And I think Colin might have started this, like,
I don't know, six weeks ago, should the Eagles trade
aj Brown? And you know I was here snickering, like, bro,
what are you talking about? And then things were kind
of wobbly and I started to think, well, maybe there's
(29:53):
a world where they trade. Anyways, the Eagles do not
trade him, which was smart. Obviously he's a stud. He's
a top ten receiver in the league. You need him
to beat man coverage. We know Jalen Hurts has kind
of struggled against the zone with only one option.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
I thought it was a good move. But if you
look around the league, interestingly, the best teams nothing. You guys,
see what the Buffalo Bills did yesterday? Nothing.
Speaker 4 (30:18):
They didn't listen to the outside noise, unlike Jerry Jones,
who basically is listening to TikTok.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
I mean, like the elected officials in this country, what's
going on online.
Speaker 4 (30:27):
I've got to react to it like that's what Jerry
Jones is doing. The smart people, Howie Roseman, Buffalo Bills.
By the way, did the Lions do much yesterday? They're
one of the favorites. Did the Green Bay Packers after
losing Tchucker crafter Chucker craft a tight end?
Speaker 3 (30:41):
How about the Kansas City Chiefs? Did they do anything? Nope?
Speaker 4 (30:44):
Listen closely to what Howie Roseman said about the Eagles
standing pat.
Speaker 12 (30:49):
When you're trying to be a great team, it's hard
to trade great players. And Agent Brown's a great player.
He wears the CEA for a reason. He's an important
part of this team, of this organization. He cares about winning,
he cares about his teammates, and you know, I think
that when you're a team like ours that is looking
forward to an opportunity to compete for a championship, you
(31:12):
just don't get rid of the guys like that. And
so feel very lucky to have him on our team
and excited about the second half of the season.
Speaker 4 (31:19):
With him, very well said, I love it. Howie Roseven
just keeps winning. And I'll just wrap up with a
fun stat from the staff this morning. You know who's
made ten trades in the last eight and a half months.
The Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jets are making moves. Not a
great sign. So smart teams do nothing right. And the
(31:40):
bad desperate teams, the Colts, the Cowboys, they're reaching and
grasping at straws. All right, let's bring on Joel Klatt,
the voice of college football, the former legendary quarterback at Colorado.
Speaker 5 (31:51):
Oh legendary.
Speaker 3 (31:52):
I want to go over here.
Speaker 5 (31:53):
Oh man, they put a little tower up here.
Speaker 3 (31:55):
Yes, some lapao is so low.
Speaker 5 (31:57):
Hi, Rachel, you know.
Speaker 8 (31:59):
Some of us are only five to three and need him.
Speaker 5 (32:02):
You need a little That's exactly right. What's going on?
Speaker 7 (32:05):
Man?
Speaker 3 (32:05):
Are you so good to have you here? Former college
baseball star.
Speaker 13 (32:09):
We never play in college. You played in minor league
right after high school. Yeah, let me go that.
Speaker 4 (32:15):
Well, Hey, you know, it's it's tough out there. It
is it is Joel's calling Indiana Penn State. I tried
to talk Chris Philika, yeah, into maybe taking the points
with the Niitney Lyons, any chance of that.
Speaker 13 (32:27):
I mean, I'm not going to get into the points
on the game that I'm calling. I will say, like,
Indiana is as good of a team as there is
in the country.
Speaker 5 (32:35):
They're They're complete.
Speaker 13 (32:36):
What I what I love is talking with opposing coaches
and you get an idea of the weaknesses for the
other teams, even more so than just watching the film yourself.
And what's what's fascinating to me over the last couple
of years is that when I talk with anybody that
has either played Indiana or is about to play Indiana,
they all say the same thing, which is, this is
the best coach team that we have played. And it's
(32:58):
one of the reasons why I think Indiana was so
aggressive locking up Kurt Signetti as the job opening started
to fly around the country. They are incredibly well coached,
They've got a Heisman caliber quarterback. They run the football
as well as anybody in the country. In fact, I
think they're second in the power for running the ball
five times they've run it for over three hundred yards,
and their defense is top ten. So there's not a
lot of holes with this Indiana team. I'm excited to
(33:19):
cover them again as Penn State just tries to kind
of keep themselves afloat first game there since they fired
James Franklin.
Speaker 5 (33:26):
So I'll be an interesting environment.
Speaker 3 (33:27):
Should be half full stadium, maybe, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (33:30):
Let's hope is a little more than that. Come on,
Penn State, faithful.
Speaker 4 (33:33):
So I want to ask you, you know, I love
talking to the announcers here at Fox. Did you guys
meet with the coaches and players?
Speaker 5 (33:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (33:38):
And so you've met with Mendoza, I assume multiple times.
So as a Jets fan, we now have a war
chest of draft picks.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
And I was like.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
Lukewarm on Mendoza and I'd read this Wall Street Journal
article about his LinkedIn page. He's graduating from the HW
School of Business at cal I mean, this guy's had
internships at yeah, big time, like real jobs. He's a
super intelligent and I'm talking myself into Mendos.
Speaker 3 (34:01):
I don't know what's he like when you meet him.
We know what he's like on the field.
Speaker 13 (34:05):
I mean this in the most positive sense, Okay, but
the first time I sat down with him, I was like,
is this like Kirk? Is this Kirk Cousins just coming back?
He is very similar to Kirk Cousins, very similar, and
the way they approach very smart. I will say, like
he can he can be a little robotic, and then
(34:26):
as the conversation went on, it got more fluid and
better and better. But he's process oriented. He is an
incredible player. He's very accurate with the football, he's smart,
and he's developed into what I think is going to
be easily a top ten pick.
Speaker 5 (34:41):
And it's to me, it comes down to style.
Speaker 13 (34:43):
So if you're an organization or a team in the
National Football League that wants to major in short passing
efficiency RPO style, run pass option style offense, and there
are those out there, I think Mike McDaniel's and Mike
McDaniels at the Dolphins, there's others you know is going
to be a great option for you, whereas like Ty
Simpson from Alabama is a little bit more pushed the
(35:05):
ball down the field a little bit better in the
intermediate zones. Those two are going to be widely considered
maybe one and two. I think Lenora Sellers will get
some action as one of the better quarterbacks as well,
just because of skill set and traits. But to me,
if I was up there and selecting in the top five,
the question would be Ty Simpson or Fernando Mendoza.
Speaker 5 (35:26):
I think that they're that good.
Speaker 4 (35:27):
So let me ask you, as a former quarterback, are
you of the belief that let's just use the jets. Hey,
we see what Mendoza does really well, we want to
draft him and then cater to his skill set one
hundred percent? Okay, so I would agree with one hundred percent.
You've got to have the right fit or else it
doesn't work.
Speaker 7 (35:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (35:43):
Lamar Jackson is obviously the great example. Hey, this guy
can run, he can't do much else. We're just going
to cater to his skills, and then he developed the
other ones, became a great passer. So when you see
Mendoza six or five, big strapping guy. But you said
the word process, I hear process. I think brock perty
now Purtty's obviously.
Speaker 5 (36:00):
Smaller, he would do really well in one of those offenses.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
Oh, Kyle Shanahan offense.
Speaker 13 (36:04):
Yeah, yeah, I mean everyone does well, and Kyle Shanahan offenses.
But because because he's so smart and accurate with the
football and on time with the football, anybody like a
Sean Payton. He I mean, obviously Sean's not drafting the quarterback,
but I'm just trying to give you an example of
these styles of offenses that that he would flourish in.
He would do very well in those. When you watch
him play. One of the things that he does that's
(36:26):
very subtle is that he's what I would call like
on platform very quickly, very quickly. So when he gets
that ball and he takes out one punch step and
then he's ready, and then he's got a very quick release,
and he's accurate with the ball and he knows what
he's looking at. So so from my standpoint, that's what's
going to pay dividends for him in particular early in
his career as an NFL quarterback, is the fact that
(36:48):
he can be on time and on target. It doesn't
take him a long time to throw, it doesn't take
him a long time to process information. Everything happens fast,
and when you're moving from the college level to the
NFL level, that I mean that that's the single trait
that can help you succeed.
Speaker 3 (37:02):
The earliest I did hear his brothers at Indiana, I
don't know.
Speaker 5 (37:05):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 13 (37:05):
Well year is he he's a younger guy. So he
gets in like Fernando goes out there, he starts blowing
people out, and then his brother gets in the ballgame
and and he's over running around on the sidelines.
Speaker 3 (37:14):
This peria it's not un locked.
Speaker 4 (37:15):
The Windosa comes out before we get to Simpson, Indiana,
Penn State. What are you hearing on the Penn State job?
Because I'm not hearing good things at this point. Well,
it's not that you're not hearing good things.
Speaker 13 (37:26):
It's just that there it's a tough process right now
for everybody, whether it's Florida or LSU. And the reason
is is because the candidates that you would like have
either got locked up already, like Kurt Signetti or Matt
Rule at Nebraska got an extension. Dan Landing has come
out and said unequivocally I'm not leaving Oregon. Well, these
are some of the main targets, maybe not matt rule,
but at least there was a tie to Penn State,
(37:48):
so it leaves the pool of candidates is starting to
minimize even before you get into a real full search
towards the end of the year. And yet the timing
of the calendar in college football is so broken that
you've got to be ready to go in December. You've
got to sign a high school class in the first
week of December and then be ready for the transfer portal,
which is now in the month of January. So if
(38:09):
you're not ready to go by then, you know, like
what happens? Where do you go? If you're hiring a coach. So,
for example, let's just say one of these jobs, whether
it's Penn State or LSU, and they decide, you know what,
Lane Kiffin is our guy. Lane has not gotten an extension,
or at least hasn't signed when at Old Miss. Yet
he has not come out and said I'm not leaving
Old Miss. So now Florida is going to target him.
(38:31):
In fact, I know that they've already targeted him. And
given Florida is talking about an offer, if it hasn't
already hit his desk, it is to make him the
second highest paid coach in college football that's going to
be matched by LSU. I'm almost certain about that. If
Penn State wanted to get in there, Well, here's the problem.
If Ole Miss goes to the playoff and they played
the second in the third round, Lane's still coaching at
(38:54):
ole Miss during the transfer portal window being opened, so
he doesn't even have an ability to build a roster.
That's what's broken about college football from a calendar perspective.
That's why I would look at guys like an Alex
Golish at South Florida who's done a heck of a
job at South Florida.
Speaker 5 (39:08):
That could be a name that's popped up.
Speaker 13 (39:10):
I think Brian Hartline is a name the assistant coach
at Ohio State that's going to pop up. These guys
that could potentially move before the transfer portal window and
not be tied to a team that could be still
playing in the middle of January.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
And anything on James Franklin before we get to the
college football rankings.
Speaker 13 (39:26):
I've heard that he's pretty close to Virginia Tech. He
will definitely coach again and he will have success. The
guy was not a bad football coach. I mean he
came up short in the most difficult games out there,
you know, namely like Michigan when they're in the top
five or Ohio State when they're in the top five.
So he's going to go someplace and he's going to
make them a better program. James is a heck of
(39:47):
a football coach, and I hope he gets back in
and I know that he will.
Speaker 3 (39:50):
I spent two years of Virginia Tech, did Jim Drucken, Miller.
Speaker 5 (39:52):
Erraitors, Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (39:54):
I had a couple classes with those guys, I think Franklin.
Speaker 13 (39:58):
I can just see j Max just jumping on up
and down to enter Sandman at at Lane Stadium, some.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
Goofa football players in the back of the class, and
I would kind of matriculate toward them because I was
at the school paper.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
Nobody cares about that anyways. Let's get to the college
football playoff rankings. Joe, I didn't see anything to get
you very upset about it.
Speaker 5 (40:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (40:15):
No, I thought it was a pretty good ranking, to
be honest with you, as solid of a first committee
ranking as I've seen in the playoff era, going back
to the four team playoff. Here's one of the things
that I think helps the committee out is the expanded
twelve team playoff, because we have an understanding now just
intuitively that okay, this is going to play out BYU
and Texas Tech are going to play this weekend, Iowa
(40:36):
and Oregon are going to play this weekend. You know,
A and M has to travel and they're going to
be on the road at Missouri. A couple of things
that stood out to me though, just takeaways, major takeaways
from the top twenty five. Number one is that this
committee values the Big ten much more so than the
AP does. Like, for instance, the team with the biggest
discrepancy between the two poles is actually Iowa. Iowa is ranked,
(41:00):
if you will, just outside of the top twenty five
by the AP at twenty six.
Speaker 5 (41:04):
Well, there are plus six at twenty for the committee,
and I think rightly.
Speaker 13 (41:08):
So the AP has devalued the middle of the Big
ten all year long. I'm not sure why, but you've
also have Michigan sitting there, USC sitting there, Washington sitting there.
So now there's a path for a Big ten team
to be the fourth team. Like let's just say one
of those teams can win out and be ten and two.
Then there's definitely a path. Another thing that stood out
to me is Texas at eleven. I thought that the
(41:30):
committee was telling us, if Texas goes nine to three,
we're probably going to put them in. They're sitting on
two losses now, but think about it. Now, think about it.
They already have them above OU. Obviously they beat Ou.
They have them above Utah. Utah has nothing on their
schedule that would propel them above Texas. And there is
(41:55):
no way the ACC is going to get valued over
Texas because we already see that. You know, the highest
AC team is ranked fourteen with Virginia. So here's Texas
and down the stretch they've got to travel to Athens
and play Georgia and then they're gonna host Texas A
and M the number three team in the country and
the number five team in the country. Well, if you
value wins, one of those wins is going to keep
them or even elevate them all the way inside of
(42:18):
the top ten, which means I think that they could
lose one of those games and still be included.
Speaker 5 (42:22):
The losing both No. No.
Speaker 13 (42:25):
Eight and four, they're out because oh you could win out,
then you could have one of those ten and two
Big ten teams.
Speaker 5 (42:31):
There's there's a host of other things.
Speaker 13 (42:33):
They're not winning at Georgia. Come on, they might Georgia
is do you remember Rick Riley? Even though I'm not
a huge fan of Rick, which is fine. I can't
believe I just said that would yeah, okay. He wrote
an article way back in the day about Tiger Woods
and Phil Mickelson. Now, like Tiger was just you know,
watching him play golf was just like rigid and focused,
and then watching Phil Mickelson play golf was like watching
(42:55):
a drunk chase of balloon next to next to a cliff.
Speaker 5 (42:58):
He had this line.
Speaker 13 (42:59):
I don't know why it stuck with It's just like
that was his line his life, and and you know,
like for Georgia, it kind of reminds me of that
because it's like, why are you behind in all of
these games? You know, every SEC game, it's like they're
they're down. They they have to create some some great play.
They're at the whim of a review like they were
(43:21):
on that third down catch no catch against Florida. You know,
like Florida's sitting there. If they get the fourth and one,
you know, they could sult the game away. And and
so I don't think that it's just a sure fire.
Oh absolutely, George is gonna beat that Texas team because
Texas is actually playing their best.
Speaker 5 (43:37):
Football right now.
Speaker 3 (43:38):
Well, it's interesting they were handling Vanderbilt handling and then
nearly choked it away. You're right, they were spotty early
during the season. So let me pivot to ask about Arts.
I mean, he was pretty rotten early in dreadful. Okay, dreadful,
I like your word better than mine.
Speaker 13 (43:54):
We we tiptoe around because of his last name, but
even even those guys would probably appreciate honesty. Arch was
dreadful early in the year, and he's gotten better in
the last.
Speaker 5 (44:07):
Couple of weeks.
Speaker 4 (44:07):
He was good, But can he go to Georgia and
perform like he did against Vandy and then that an
m game that's not a layup even though they're at home.
Speaker 3 (44:15):
Where are you on, Arch? Have you seen a Arch?
Speaker 5 (44:19):
Arch is.
Speaker 13 (44:21):
A decent to average college football quarterback early in his career,
and he's going to need at least twenty more starts
to be even remotely ready for the national.
Speaker 3 (44:31):
Football guy in year three. We can still say it's
early in his career.
Speaker 5 (44:34):
Well as far as number of starts. He's early in
his career.
Speaker 13 (44:37):
You know, again, this position, the position of quarterback, there
is no way you can replicate it. So I don't
care if it's your third year in college or if
it's your first year in college. The only thing that
matters is number of games started. Okay, Now, can you
be a little more comfortable, Sure, I guess, but you
can't replicate the position anywhere other than on the field
(44:59):
live in games. And so as he's starting to develop,
as he's starting to start more games, you're starting to
see him get a little bit better. Now, we all
thought he was going to come out and be Gangbusters
and be Trevor Lawrence right away or Bear Bachmeyer, the
quarterback at BYU is eight to er right now as
a true freshman.
Speaker 5 (45:15):
And it didn't happen. It didn't happen.
Speaker 13 (45:17):
But here's what this position is all about is repsent experience.
If you take a look at since the turn of
the century, the quarterbacks that have actually won Super Bowls.
So you take a look at the list of guys
that have actually won Super Bowls. And I think we've
talked about this on the show, and I'm sure you've
you've been riveted over in the corner as I'm saying this.
Speaker 3 (45:39):
To Colin, but.
Speaker 13 (45:41):
The average college career of all the guys that have
won Super Bowls is around thirty to thirty four starts.
In college football, you have to have a deep level
of experience before you get to the NFL. So here's
my everyone fans out there, just let Arch play a
(46:02):
couple of years. Okay, again, he is twenty starts away
from being remotely close to an NFL level.
Speaker 4 (46:07):
Okay, So to that point, a quick aside to my
guy Ty Simpson at Alabama.
Speaker 3 (46:12):
I love what I've seen from you. Just said him and.
Speaker 4 (46:15):
Mendoza top ten picks. He's got like eight start nights.
Speaker 5 (46:18):
I would choose Mendoza because of that very specific thing.
Speaker 3 (46:21):
I wanted to make sure that that's.
Speaker 13 (46:22):
Now he's likely going to come out. He's going to
be raided up there. But again, the experience factor would
tend to if you're just looking at history, favor a
guy like Mendoza because he started more games since.
Speaker 3 (46:34):
And sat behind a bunch of guys who were like Anyways.
Speaker 4 (46:37):
Cowherd's now texting me he wants a question about USCTARC.
Speaker 13 (46:41):
Does I was going to say we were about to
get through one of these without us.
Speaker 4 (46:44):
Well, your guy Lincoln Riley after the win over Nebraska
was complaining, Hey, we ended our game after midnight.
Speaker 3 (46:49):
We have to fly back in the middle of the night.
Speaker 13 (46:50):
I can't stand when coaches would complain about the schedule. Listen, listen, listen, coaches,
all of you and all of you that do this.
Do you like the money or not, because that's what
it is. You know, you all complain about not having
enough money to pay your players now and the revenue
share and all that, like we're paying one hundred and
(47:11):
sixty seven million dollars and buy out money in college football.
That revenue needs to come somewhere. Guess where it comes
from television? You know, like, deal with it. I don't
know what to tell you, Like I I really I
didn't enjoy. I'm sure that he was. And Lincoln, generally,
I would say, is better about that than others. So
(47:32):
if he was joking, you know, that's good. He finished
after midnight plenty of times in the PAC twelve when
they were in PAC.
Speaker 5 (47:38):
Twelve after dark. Yeah, listen.
Speaker 13 (47:40):
His travel and game and game kick times more difficult
in college than it is in the NFL. Yeah, you know,
but we also don't split games up, so you're not
on regional television in college football, you're on national television
in college football. I thought that that win for USC
was really important for them winning on the road. There's
this old adage I've always thought, you you lose big
before you lose small, you lose small before you win small,
(48:01):
and you win small before you win big. And they're
they're turning that corner from losing small those one possession
games a year ago to now winning some of those games,
and the way that they did it, leaning into their
run game, not having a great performance from their quarterback
Jane Myava.
Speaker 5 (48:16):
That's important for them.
Speaker 3 (48:17):
You know.
Speaker 13 (48:17):
If they just go out there Miava throws for four
hundred and they win by a score, it's like, Okay,
did we really learn anything or grow as us.
Speaker 6 (48:24):
No.
Speaker 13 (48:24):
But if you go out there and you win with
defense after the injury obviously to Dylan Royolo, which is
which is a bummer for Nebraska, but they leaned into
the run game. They got it dumb Mayava was not
good in that game and they still win. Now they're
set up as a one lost Big Ten team in
conference obviously after losing to Notre Dame and Illinois, but
one loss in conference and.
Speaker 5 (48:44):
They've got a chance to be ten and two.
Speaker 4 (48:46):
That's my next question. So I'm looking at the schedule.
Northwestern and that's a win this week versus Iowa. That'll
be tough, but I think they very tough. And then
the Oregon game is the Oregon game, essentially the season
for Lincoln Ryley.
Speaker 3 (48:58):
I will not go to the playoffs.
Speaker 13 (48:59):
I I mean yes, the way that the schedule lines up,
but they still have to handle their business and a
team like Iowa is still their kryptonite that Iowa does
not care at all. They will run it fifty two times,
they can't throw the football, and they're going to play
great defense. So Mayava likely struggles again against Iowa, even
if that game is at home, and they're going to
have to win in a gritty, low scoring fashion. So
(49:22):
of all the games, I think Oregon is the biggest
threat because it's Oregon and it's on the road. But
the sneaky game, the sneaky, tough one for USC is
going to be that Iowa gain.
Speaker 4 (49:31):
Yeah, remember the Illinois game was kind of fluky at
the end. They could have won that easily and then
Notre Dame. I believe it was a one score game
with like seven minutes left.
Speaker 13 (49:39):
They definitely had their chances. They blew it on special teams,
they failed in short yardage, didn't lean into the run game,
and they couldn't stop the run. And Iowa again will
run it fifty two times. They will not care, and
they will shrink the game down. Miava might only get
the ball seven times.
Speaker 5 (49:54):
In that game.
Speaker 3 (49:54):
Yeah, not ideal. I know the buyouts are everywhere. Is
Lincoln Riley?
Speaker 5 (50:00):
Yeah yeah, he's safe.
Speaker 3 (50:01):
Okay, that's nice.
Speaker 5 (50:02):
He's safe.
Speaker 13 (50:02):
I do think that this team, I think I think
they finish at least nine and three. That not only
retains Riley obviously, but it also retains their class. This
is the number one recruiting class in all of college football.
The trajectory for USC is actually very positive. Everyone gets
so upset at at Colin and I because they're USC,
and I get it because Colin always always brings it up.
(50:23):
But that program is on the correct trajectory and like
I said, go through that process, lose big, loose, small
win small, win big, and they're on that that trend.
Speaker 3 (50:32):
Last one we got to talk about Lane Kiffin. I
don't know.
Speaker 4 (50:35):
Are you close to him, because he loves to talk
to the media. He's getting combative. I know you said earlier,
hasn't ruled out anything. He's not going to the NFL, right,
is Miami Dolphins?
Speaker 3 (50:45):
Nonsense? I know.
Speaker 13 (50:47):
No, I see Lane at LSU, really I do.
Speaker 5 (50:53):
That's a top three job in the sport.
Speaker 3 (50:56):
I disagree to Yeah.
Speaker 4 (50:58):
The last time you said that here, I was biting
my tongue, like why it's just not anymore historically? Yes,
and I know in the past everybody's won, But don't
you feel the playing field is leveled to the point
that LSU's not that much better of a job than
what miss I mean, Lane Kiffin is calling the shots
right now for.
Speaker 3 (51:15):
Late hold On.
Speaker 5 (51:19):
Is a better job than.
Speaker 4 (51:23):
So the money is not that different Joel. Okay, he
runs the show. He's got total he could say whatever
he wants at LSU. Who's calling the shots there? By
the way, No he's not. I haven't looked at my phone.
He's dealing with the board of Governors. Yeah, Colin and
I disagree greatly on this. I just think the landscape
has changed with NI L collectives.
Speaker 13 (51:41):
I know that I thought this was going to be
just a really good experience and then you and then
you hit me with that right at the end.
Speaker 4 (51:48):
So just to be clear, it's for Lane Kiffin, not
anyone else. Like Lane Kiffin is running things. He doesn't
answer to nobody at Ole miss I disagree. Okay, So
you know, Lane, if it's as Joe, why do you
I want to take the LSU job, sell me on it.
Speaker 13 (52:06):
If confirm I don't have to say you on it one,
you can open up the back door and you can
get a top four recruiting class just regionally. They have
more resources than anyone maybe other than Oregon. It's just
quieter than Oregon's. They've got business oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
oh yeah.
Speaker 5 (52:23):
Yeah, multiple multiple billions.
Speaker 3 (52:25):
Sure hasn't shown up in those playoff trips.
Speaker 13 (52:27):
Lot they were able to build a roster that was
pretty substantial. And granted I don't think Brian Kelly was
a good fit there, Lane would probably be a great
fit at LSU.
Speaker 3 (52:37):
And you want to wait him out huh oh yeah.
January second, Lane, you're in the semi final.
Speaker 5 (52:43):
We'll see that worth it.
Speaker 13 (52:44):
We'll see Lane's going to be the top three two
paid coach in college football?
Speaker 4 (52:50):
Do we do a friendly wager that doesn't have to
be monetary? I believe he says it all this.
Speaker 13 (52:55):
Well, what are your options? You tell me who's the
better option. You don't think Lane Kiffin is a great fit.
Speaker 5 (53:01):
So who's a good fit?
Speaker 7 (53:02):
No?
Speaker 3 (53:02):
No, I think for Lane Kiffin, staying at Old miss
makes sense.
Speaker 5 (53:05):
Okay, So who does LSU hire?
Speaker 3 (53:06):
I honestly, I don't know that it's that attractive.
Speaker 4 (53:09):
Let me use that word attractive of a job now,
given all the upheaval with the ad, the border governors,
all this nonsense that's going on there. I mean, Joe,
you're walking dough into a hornet's nest. Two or false false?
Speaker 5 (53:21):
Take the Crans away? What are we doing?
Speaker 3 (53:24):
All right, Kyle? Here we go. Colin has checked in.
Speaker 4 (53:26):
What about Lane in the NFL New York Giants Jackson
dart Ren Yeah, no, no, shot no.
Speaker 13 (53:32):
And I said this, I said this to Colin last week.
I still think that as as big of issues structurally
that college football has, it's still more appealing to guys
that have a heart for college football because of the
influence and immortality that is offered in college football that
is not offered in the NFL. Fine, go go work
(53:56):
in the NFL, and you can win a Super Bowl,
you can win multiple super bowl and all anyone is
going to care about is who was your quarterback. But
in college football, like you're you're the king. You know,
you win a couple of national championships and they build
a statue of you out in front, and that program
is always yours. You are the quarterback of that program.
Plus you still have the ability to influence eighteen to
(54:18):
twenty two year olds, grow them, develop them, you know,
from young men into men. And that's I think that's
still something that is appealing and attractive to a lot
of guys that stay in the college level and is
not offered at the NFL level.
Speaker 3 (54:33):
But stuff, Joel Klett, I'm started to derail things with LSU.
Speaker 5 (54:37):
That's all right, we'll talk off it.
Speaker 3 (54:38):
Good joby, It's fine. It's a good job, of course,
just not right now.
