Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Hello, and welcome to the Herd.

Speaker 4 (00:28):
It's a lovely Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
That's right.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
It's me Jason MacIntyre coming out of the bullpen to
fill in for the injured, struggling Colin Coward.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
He's down for the count with some sort of cough
sneeze flu deal.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
You know, hey, listen, when the weather church cold in Chicago,
it's tough. You gotta get a jacket. I guess Colin's
gonna have to buy one now. He'll be back tomorrow,
he promises. You got eleven hours sleep. And you know,
things line up perfectly because I get to fill in.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
And you know, I'm talking about the.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
New York Football Jets for three straight hours. Joined today
by the Great Rachel Nichols. Rachel not as excited about
the Jets as I am, but it is James.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
The big, big night today in Los Angeles.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
Obviously, the Lakers hosting Victor Webbin Yama. Rachel will be there.
I'm efforting tickets as we speak, but we'll hopefully have
a great night. But Rachel, we got to start with
the NFL. And as a long suffering Jets fan, don't
ask me how I got into being a Jets fan.
I was born in New York, family moved to DC,

(01:34):
and I decided I don't want to root for these
Washington at the time, Redskins. Let me go to my
hometown Routs, the New York Jets and folks, it's been
a long time since we've had anything to cheer about.
And then on NFL trade deadline Day, it becomes basically
the greatest day in franchise history for anyone under the
age of fifty. Obviously, you know the Jets one with

(01:55):
Joe Namath the way back in the day. Colin loves
to reference those days.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
I don't. I don't know them there to me, so
as a.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Jets fan, the reason I'm celebrating is the trades. You know,
it wasn't working with the defensive strategy, as is often
the case in the NFL. We'll talk about that later
with a couple of great guests, but they're going offense
and they have moved off Sauce Gardner, the great cornerback
who was an All Pro in his first two seasons,
and Quinn Williams he shipped to Dallas. Folks, it is

(02:22):
a celebratory day if you're a Jets fan. This season's
gonna be tough. I saw one of these who won
the trades. The twenty twenty five Jets are listed as losers.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
They're gonna stink this season. We're one and seven.

Speaker 4 (02:35):
Yes, I could say we and maybe we win a
couple games, but it's not about this year.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
It's for the future, because, folks, we rich.

Speaker 4 (02:43):
We got a war chest of picks in the next
two drafts.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
Okay, we got two.

Speaker 4 (02:48):
First rounders and a second in twenty twenty six, and
look at that twenty twenty seven. I mean they're loaded
three first round picks. Now, I know you guys are
all over draft boards like I am. Yeah, you know
what they're saying. Twenty twenty six straft.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
It's fine, it's good.

Speaker 4 (03:03):
Twenty seven maybe the greatest NFL draft ever, headlined by
obviously the great mister Smith at Ohio State, and who knows,
maybe Archie Manning is a superstar at that point. But
to recap the trades, the teardown, Oh wait, it's not
a teardown. Let's go to Jets GM Darren Mooji.

Speaker 5 (03:25):
I wouldn't call it a teardown. And the goal is
always to win.

Speaker 6 (03:27):
Look, these coaches and players work too hard every day,
all day with the goal of winning on Sunday, and
that never changes because that's what the fans deserve, that's
what the players are, that's what the coaches are, and
that never changes.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
Well said, I learned out who Darren Muji was basically yesterday.
He's been anonymous, hasn't been in the role that long.
But I don't want to look too much at the past. Okay,
you know, as my son likes to say, trust Dad, Trust,
I'm trusting in the Jets future. Guys. The past is
a place of reference, not residents. You don't want to

(04:03):
live in the past. You can reference it, and I'm
gonna do that right now. I'm gonna bring up a
certain Detroit Lions team that you know, not too long ago,
had a terrible run. Then they trade for Jared Goff
fixed the offensive line, and they start to figure things out,
and they hire a gentleman by the name of Dan Campbell.
Dan Campbell will kind of rough around the edges. Had

(04:24):
to develop a culture in Detroit. These things aren't built overnight.
And if you remember, in twenty twenty two, the Lions
start one to six and everybody's scoffing at Campbell. I
may have been in that group. And then they turn
things around and they end up nine to eight. And
in the twenty twenty three draft, the Detroit Lions had
four picks in the first forty five. Four in the

(04:46):
first forty five off a nine and eight season. Folks,
they hit a grand Slam home run in that twenty
twenty three draft, Jamiir Gibbs, who people were like, hey,
well Jamir running back that early?

Speaker 3 (04:59):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
Then they got the kid Campbell, the linebacker. Come on,
these are not premium positions, Detroit, what are you doing.
And then in the second round, this is when they
made too great picks. Sam Laporte, the tight end who's
playing in an all Pro level, and Brian Branch who
wasn't All Pro last season.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Four picks, four major hits.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
They made the jump to light speed the next season
twelve and five, last year fifteen and two. You can
turn things around quickly with the right draft picks. And
I can already hear you shouting at your radio or
your TV, Jay Mack, come on, the Jets don't have anything. Actually,
the infrastructure is kind of sort of there. We're just

(05:39):
not seeing the results yet. And oh, by the way,
you guys know, Aaron Glenn came from Detroit, right he
was on that Dan Campbell's staff saw what Dan Campbell
instilled as a culture. It takes some time. These things
must bake. You've got to give them time. And I
hope that the Jets give Aaron Glenn time because frankly,
I don't know if they're going to go and take

(06:00):
Fernando Mendoza, the kid out of Indiana with the number
one pick. By the way, I love Fernando Mendoza. I
learn more about him on his linked in page than
I did his IG. Yeah, I want my quarterback who's
updating his LinkedIn page.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
He already graduated from business school.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
He's getting a second master's in business at Indiana.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
And oh, by the way, he's one of the Heisman favorites.

Speaker 4 (06:20):
I mean, this guy's a genius, a six foot five
quarterback winning from the pocket, had multiple offensive coordinators. Listen,
I'm starting to buy into Fernando Mendoza. But here's the
beauty of having options like the Jets have. If he's
not your guy, and you realize it, we like him,
we don't love him.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Huh.

Speaker 4 (06:36):
Is it possible that maybe we go with the Giants strategy.
We get a defensive player early, and at the end
of the first round we find a quarterback.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
It's looking good for Jackson Dart in New York.

Speaker 7 (06:47):
All right, let's.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
Pivot to one of the teams that traded with the
Jets yesterday, and that's the Dallas Cowboys, led by their
carnival barker of an owner Jerry Jones. Guys, I know
a lot of cowboys. They are long suffering like the Jets.
I mean, they haven't been to do it. NFC championship,
longest drought in the NFC. It's bad, it's bleak. But oh,

(07:09):
by the way, some people in Dallas are applauding Jerry's
move yesterday to grab Quinny Williams from my Jets. Me
in the morning meeting, I'm catching strays all over the place.
These guys are like, I like what Dallas did, I
like what Jerry did. Really, you guys like Jerry Jones saying, yeah,

(07:29):
we got Micah Parsons, who, by the way, two years
ago was a like the focal point of an incredible
defense that went fourth in the league.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
Yes, that's right.

Speaker 4 (07:39):
In Mike McCarthy's great twelve twelve win season two years ago,
the Dallas defense, led by Micaeh was fourth in the league.
But last year Dak gets hurt. The backup quarterbacks can't
do anything. The defense crumbles, suffers injuries, and they're terrible.
So let's move off Michael. Let's not pay him nine
games into the season. Oh my gosh, defense is a

(08:00):
tire fire. Let's go get Quinn Williams. What are we doing?
Here's Jerry Jones on making it up on the fly
on the radio yesterday.

Speaker 8 (08:09):
I don't have time personally to have a bad time.
It's not on my schedule, and so I have a
natural urgency because of my age, and so tomorrow's the immediate.
Tomorrow are a big thing to me. And I also
have enough discipline not to get in trouble for years

(08:34):
to come.

Speaker 4 (08:35):
Oh my gosh, Cowboys fans, are you following? I mean,
you got whiplash a listening to your owners last GM
and be following all these moves. And here's the crazy part.
If you look intotality at the Micah deal and.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
The Quinn Williams deal, that they didn't.

Speaker 4 (08:52):
Get that much for Michaeh Parsons, who's basically had one
of the best runs of any defensive player in the
of the NFL.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
That ain't hyperbole. Those are facts.

Speaker 4 (09:03):
I mean, go look at what Micah Parsons has done
in his career.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
He's been unbelievable. I love Quinn Williams. I hiped the
hell out of him when he was with my Jets.

Speaker 4 (09:11):
Well, now that they've traded him, I'm ready to be
objective and say, oh, he's had a really good career
six seasons, one zero pro. He's the elite at his position. Well,
he's certainly not top five. He's been great against the run,
and that's what Dallas wants him to do. Find Okay, great,
I don't know how that helps your secondary and ninety
two million dollar man, mister Bland, who's still on his

(09:34):
rear end after getting cooked by Marvin Harrison, Monday night.
I mean, listen, this Dallas defense is a laughing stock
and Jerry Jones is just making it up on the fly.
I mean, forget about plans. If you're not planning, you know,
what are you doing? And then you hear the owners
saying that's not on my timeline. We had to turn
it around real quick. I don't I know that everybody

(09:56):
was excited about Dallas at times this season, and I've
taken the bait.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
I'm not gonna lie. I fell for it.

Speaker 4 (10:01):
You know, when they were able to put up forty
on the Packers and look good, it's like, oh, maybe
there's something here.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
But then you drill down.

Speaker 4 (10:08):
A little bit, like, oh, defense got destroyed by Caleb
Williams and they just got dog walk by Jacoby Brissett.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
Did you see that stat?

Speaker 5 (10:17):
Guys?

Speaker 4 (10:18):
The Arizona Cardinals were the only team in the league
not to have a drive over seventy four yards in
the season.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
Jacoby Brissett had two of those.

Speaker 4 (10:27):
Back to back for touchdowns against Dallas Monday night. Like
at that point, I'm sure Jerry sees it. It's like, oh,
we got to overpay for Quinn Williams. Let's remember by
the way. As an aside on the Jets, Apparently Mouji
wasn't making calls for quinnin and sauce, he's fielding calls.
So Jerry reactionary as ever to his defense, getting embarrassed

(10:48):
by Jacoby Brissett says, oh, man, we gotta go get
Quentin Williams. Like that's not how you want to operate.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
What are we doing?

Speaker 4 (10:58):
Like something wacky happens this next month, Like, oh, we
got to apply it to next offseason. Like it's just
not how you're They're not a serious football program right now.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
I mean they haven't been for years.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
I just cannot fathom how Dallas fans are dealing with this.
I'm all excited because the Jets have moved off players. Meanwhile,
Jerry Jones is tinkering, thinking, oh, we got something, have
you I don't know if we can call up the
Dallas schedule here, but have you guys seen what they've
got coming up? This idea that Quinn's gonna help them
to the playoffs is laughable. They got a three game

(11:31):
stretch here Eagles, Chiefs, Lions, and by the way, the
Vikings and Chargers are not Chop Liver. So this team's
not going to the playoffs this year, and if you
want to sell me on, hey, Jay, I think it's
probably for next year. Okay, that's not a bad idea.
Can I ask you what are you doing with Pickens
on the outside? He's in a contract year. Are you

(11:51):
suddenly paying him big money to be you? The t
Higgins to Lamb's Jamar Chase?

Speaker 3 (11:58):
Is that what we're doing? So we're going to become
Bengals NFC, because that's what it feels like.

Speaker 4 (12:04):
I just feel like there's no plan in place. Planning
is invaluable, and I don't think Jerry does that. It
feels to me like he's making it.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Up on the fly.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
So I know, I've opened the show with a lot
of positivity followed by some negativity. We'll do plenty of positive.
Rachel's here, obviously, and we are excited.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
Rachel. I am just curious before we go to break here.

Speaker 4 (12:26):
Jerry Jones reactionary, Hey, we need to do this now,
not on my timeline. You hear that as a Cowboys fan,
and I know you're a Washington fan, I'm excited.

Speaker 7 (12:36):
Do not call me a Cowboys fan, come.

Speaker 4 (12:38):
On, yeah, But as a Washington fig you hear that,
You're like, oh, heck, yeah, I love this.

Speaker 7 (12:44):
I mean, look, what did Jerry say that he's old?

Speaker 9 (12:47):
So you know his timeline is not necessarily the Cowboys timeline.
I saw this as a trade for next year. Honestly,
the Cowboys have issues in their secondary. This is not
going to fix everything, but it will set them more
on the right track than they currently are.

Speaker 7 (13:00):
So that's okay.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
I enjoy the six wins this year. Seven Maybe Cowboys
fans all right?

Speaker 4 (13:04):
Coming up next, did an AFC team miss their win?
Do they make a mistake not making a move. We'll
talk about that next on The Herd.

Back here on the Herd.

Speaker 4 (13:57):
Got some great guests coming up, Joe Klatt Top Next Hour.
Cannot wait to talk to them about all the quarterbacks
the Jets will be sifting through to find. Hopefully they're
hidden gem in the draft, folks. That's why I'm optimistic.

Speaker 3 (14:10):
It's fun.

Speaker 4 (14:11):
Like there's optimism right see, Rakes are laughing over there, like, yeah, listen,
I'm giddy. It feels like Christmas and I'm like eleven
years old and there's presence everywhere. It's like, yes, what's
in there?

Speaker 7 (14:21):
I just love that there is no story you cannot
tie to the Jets.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
Yes, yes, yes, And I know the Jets are like
a no fly zone because they stink and nobody cares.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
But when you're passionate about something, hey, let's rock with it.

Speaker 4 (14:32):
Let me quickly talk about the Indiana Indianapolis Colts because
they're kind of all in you guys.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
I like to play poker.

Speaker 4 (14:42):
Occasionally, you know, you think you can bluff your way
to a big haul, or maybe you just are, like
you know what, I'm sick of this on bored. I'm
going home, just a friendly poker game.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
I'm going all in.

Speaker 4 (14:53):
The smart people and the smart poker players, and the
smart NFL teams usually draft and developed and maybe supplement
a little bit through free agency and trades. Right, draft
and develop is a way to go. And if you
looked at the deadline yesterday, a lot of the content
the major contenders did nothing, and you're like, oh, that's

(15:14):
that's kind of interesting. But you have a team like
the Colts taking a big swing. And I had a
Colt buddy who texted me and was like, this is
so out of character for Ballard. He basically has drafted
and developed with the Colts. He hasn't done much of Hey,
let's make a big, huge swing, give up draft picks.

Speaker 3 (15:33):
And so I'm like, what do you think this is about? Now?

Speaker 4 (15:36):
One of the guys on staff has tried to talk
me into this topic, not really talk me into, but
he's brought it up. And it's interesting talked about all
my podcasting with others. The Colt's new owner is now
like on the sideline wearing a headset, taking notes and
she's not saying much.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
She's just very involved.

Speaker 4 (15:54):
And I've workshopped a couple ideas about what's going on
because the indie media hasn't really gotten much out of her.
She did have some great quotes recently, but it's like, hmm,
I wonder is Chris Baller saying, damn, we got one
playoff win in the.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
Last ten years.

Speaker 4 (16:10):
Daniel Jones is playing out kicking his coverage here, he's
playing way above his above the rim. He's doing awesome. Hell,
Ravens don't look formidable. They add the Lamar injury chiefs?
Are they dominant? J Max out here on TV saying
they're not going to the playoffs? Bills shucks, they got
smacked by the Falcons?

Speaker 3 (16:30):
Is this our year? Can we pull this off? Should
we go all in?

Speaker 4 (16:35):
And it's a fascinating question, you guys know, because a
part of an ownership group of a soccer team in
the top Mexican league, I love team building and moving
the chess pieces around and it's not easy. And you
see the Colts and I just want was this interrational
move by them? Or does this make them legit contenders?
Because I'm gonna be honest with you. If you go

(16:56):
by Vegas and you say, who are the Colts playing
in the playoffs? Are they're playing the Chiefs, they're going
to be underdogs, even if they're at home. Oh, the
Culture playing the Bills, they're going to be underdogs. What
about the Ravens. Yeah, same deal. And by that metric,
it's like, should you have gone all in? Because let's
be real, this Daniel Jones deal one year, fourteen million dollars.

Speaker 5 (17:18):
You guys, remember what.

Speaker 4 (17:19):
Happened with Daniel Jones had success in New York. He
wasn't even this good in New York, but they got
to the playoffs. He didn't make a lot of mistakes
and they beat the Vikings. Then he wanted to contract
negotiations and he said he wanted all the money. The
stories about what was going on at that table pretty legendary.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
And guess what. The Giants bent over backwards. They gave
it to him within about a couple months. Oh what
did we do? We can't afford Saquon?

Speaker 4 (17:47):
And then Daniel takes the field and the next season
they were terrible and it's like goodbye, couldn't run him
out of town quick enough.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
So I know he's had.

Speaker 4 (17:54):
A rejuvenated season, if you will, But what if this
is eight weeks of fools, gold and what we just
saw against Pittsburgh is probably closer to the real Danny Dimes.
By the way, how about the name change he went
from Danny Dimes. I started calling him Danny loose change, and.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
Now he is.

Speaker 4 (18:12):
He has rebranded in India as Indiana Jones.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
Okay, and we'll see how that works out.

Speaker 4 (18:18):
So I like sauce Gardner. I think he's gonna fit
in Captain Lew's defensive scheme, heavy zone. I mean, with
his length and instincts. I mean, Sauce Gardner is gonna
do well. But as I alluded to yesterday, like they're
gonna be facing the Bills in the playoffs, so is
he like, Hey, we're gonna erase this side of the field,
all right. I mean, Bill's got great tight ends underneath
slot receiver, Like there's nobody you need to remove from

(18:41):
from the Bills. Same year with the Ravens, the Chiefs,
A Forge she Rice. But I don't know that he's
a one yet.

Speaker 3 (18:47):
Guys.

Speaker 4 (18:47):
He's a one on my fantasy team, that's for sure.
But I just have some questions about the Colts. I
do applaud them. We're close, we're going all in. I
do I respect that remember the Jets see Rachel's He's right,
I'm gonna bring it back.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
To the Jets. If they were close, they go all in,
Aaron Rodgers, I didn't.

Speaker 4 (19:04):
I wanted something else, but when they did go all in,
I supported it.

Speaker 3 (19:08):
Then Rogers gets hurt.

Speaker 4 (19:09):
It ends quickly, but I ultimately do not believe this
will lead to much for the Colts. And now you're
gonna have to probably overpay Daniel Jones. He's not gonna
want some bargain basement twenty five thirty million dollar a
year deal. He's gonna say, listen, I was one of
the best quarterbacks you've had in the last decade, says
Andrew luck Left. What else you got, you gonna go get.

Speaker 3 (19:30):
Kyler Marine now, Shane.

Speaker 4 (19:31):
Here's Shane Steichen, by the way, on the radio this
morning on the Indianapolis trade.

Speaker 12 (19:38):
Obviously, I'm really excited about adding Sauce Gardner to our
football team. You know, his resume speaks for itself, pro bowler,
all pro. So to get a guy into the building
like that, it just elevates everybody around us. So really
excited to add him to the fold.

Speaker 4 (19:54):
By the way, Gardner was all Pro the first two
years last year he struggled. You could argue that they
were inking ship. He was unhappy this year when targeted.
He's got a passer rating allowed of one to eighteen.

Speaker 3 (20:07):
Not great.

Speaker 4 (20:07):
Now again, you could argue sinking ship. Jet steak Kee
was checked out. Okay, I'll buy that, but good luck
with that, Colts. Let's go to Rachel Nichols with the news.

Speaker 5 (20:16):
No, no, no, turn on the news.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
This is the herd Line.

Speaker 9 (20:20):
News, Jason. This isn't a jet story, So I'm sorry
about that. JJ McCarthy stepped in against the Lions. He
was sidelined, remember with that ankle injury for five weeks.

Speaker 7 (20:31):
He looked the part.

Speaker 9 (20:33):
McCarthy accounted for three total touchdowns helped Minnesota stop a
two game losing streak. But here's the spice. After the game,
JJ posted this on his Instagram with the caption quote
kneecaps are intact, which seems to be a shot at
Dan Campbell's famous biting the kneecaps quote.

Speaker 7 (20:52):
Right, remember that?

Speaker 3 (20:53):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (20:54):
I guess we should also note that JJ blew out
his knee and his rookie years, so you know, the
could maybe make the case it was about that, but
I gotta personally, I think this is.

Speaker 7 (21:04):
A shot at Campbell. What do you expect to see
from McCarthy in the Viking series?

Speaker 3 (21:08):
I kind of like that. Yeah, Rachel's weird.

Speaker 4 (21:12):
He's had three starts, and we're supposed to like render
a verdict if he can't play, or he can't play,
we need to let it bake just a little, right.
I mean, they got a tough one this weekend against
the Ravens. They're at home and I'm seeing Baltimore's favor
by four in Minnesota. Ravens defense isn't great. Do you
think McCarthy is the guy there or do we just

(21:32):
we don't know it.

Speaker 7 (21:33):
I think he could be could be great.

Speaker 3 (21:35):
I mean, Harball loves him.

Speaker 4 (21:36):
Yeah, yeah, I think they're gonna be fine with jj McCaw.

Speaker 3 (21:41):
I don't know if he's going to duplicate Donald's numbers
from last year.

Speaker 7 (21:44):
Right, Yeah, especially Donald's having success.

Speaker 3 (21:47):
Let's crushing it in Seattle.

Speaker 9 (21:48):
You tough to live up to, all right, Let's talk
a little Warriors. Jimmy Butler left yesterday's win against the
Suns with lower back soreness. Now, Butler came into that
game questionable. He ended up playing, but then he tweaked
his back during the game didn't return after halftime. Jimmy
is currently considered questionable again for the Warriors game tonight

(22:08):
against Sacramento. Meanwhile, Jason Draymond Green is unlikely to pay
on the second night of a back to back. Steph
Curry has already been ruled out with illness.

Speaker 7 (22:18):
Maybe maybe the same thing Colin has. I don't know,
maybe they've been hanging out together.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
I don't know.

Speaker 7 (22:22):
I can say.

Speaker 9 (22:24):
Look, it's obviously early, but the Warriors sit in sixth
right now in the West.

Speaker 7 (22:29):
Do you have concerns?

Speaker 9 (22:30):
I mean, this is a much older roster and we're
already seeing, oh they have to sit out after a
back to back or some injuries that kind of thing.

Speaker 7 (22:37):
I mean a back injury. That's an old man injury obviously.

Speaker 10 (22:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:40):
Yeah, I Where do you stand on this whole sitting
out on back to backs?

Speaker 4 (22:45):
Because they had Austin Reeves and Luca do it with
the Lakers, They're not at.

Speaker 3 (22:51):
The same age as Steph Curry and Draymond.

Speaker 4 (22:53):
Ree I have no problem with this, and I know,
like a lot of people are like.

Speaker 3 (22:57):
Oh, you got to play.

Speaker 4 (22:57):
Michael Jordan's out here talking about you got to play
eighty two games, Like that's dumb. I want to see
Steph Curry playing meaningful games. Sorry, not November fifth against
the Sacramento Kings.

Speaker 3 (23:07):
On a back to back.

Speaker 9 (23:08):
Yeah, and you know they purposely sometimes are like, oh,
it's a back to back.

Speaker 7 (23:12):
And it's against the Sacramento Kings. We're going to dray
Ron take a seat.

Speaker 9 (23:16):
I'm okay with it because you want a guy as
close to one hundred percent as you can get every
time he's out on the floor.

Speaker 7 (23:22):
And if you feel like.

Speaker 9 (23:23):
Back to backs put him into some sort of risk
because of his age, because of you know, injuries, because
of anything, don't do it.

Speaker 7 (23:31):
It's not worth it.

Speaker 5 (23:32):
It's not worth.

Speaker 7 (23:32):
Missing the guy missing the next month or two.

Speaker 3 (23:34):
Yeah. I only watch a little Warriors.

Speaker 4 (23:37):
I'm more interested in, like, you know, Lakers, Rockets, a
couple other teams.

Speaker 3 (23:40):
But what have you seen every time I look at
the box score, they're playing.

Speaker 4 (23:43):
Like twelve guys. They're playing so many they're lessening the
minutes for Curry. It feels like good strategy. Dahn from
Steve Kirk.

Speaker 9 (23:50):
Yeah, I absolutely think so. Look, he knows they're an
older team. Yeah, they want to make a long playoff run.
Steph Curry's window is closing. This is sort of the
last ride with Butler, with these other guys.

Speaker 7 (24:01):
And he wants to make it all count.

Speaker 9 (24:03):
And he's getting more production from a lot of these
guys than he did last season. And look, Jimmy Butler,
he might be sitting out tonight with a back injury,
but he's there's been thirty one regular season games since
he got there. He's played in thirty of them. So
we maybe are talking about old man injuries.

Speaker 4 (24:19):
But I listened to a record good with Butler, Curry, Yeah,
with the whole group.

Speaker 9 (24:23):
Yeah, all right, let's move over to Cooper Flag, oh boy,
with the MAVs. You know, Cooper is still finding his
way in the league. The Mavericks are off to a
rough start. Kevin Durant, though, after a recent game, said
don't worry. The future is still bright for the rookie.

Speaker 7 (24:39):
Take a listen.

Speaker 13 (24:42):
I just think it's always good for young players to
just be thrown into the fire.

Speaker 5 (24:45):
Just go play.

Speaker 4 (24:46):
Oh.

Speaker 13 (24:47):
Jake is an incredible coach that knows the game inside
out as a player and as a coach, So you know,
no matter what position here, I think He's just a
basketball player.

Speaker 5 (24:57):
He's only going to get better.

Speaker 9 (25:00):
Kadi went on to say that he really feels for
Cooper Jason because Cooper's playing at guard after spending his
whole time prior to that at forward. Remember k D
came into the league in college, he played the four
of the five, and then he came into the NBA
into two, So he knows that that's a real adjustment.

Speaker 7 (25:19):
You've been hiring Cooper Flag. What do you think of
all this?

Speaker 4 (25:21):
It's the narrative, and I try not to pay too
much attention to what else is going on in the media.
Sometimes it's impossible with social media. The narrative is Cooper Flag,
ain't it?

Speaker 3 (25:30):
Oh this Jason? You said, this guy's gonna be all NBA.
He's nothing. We don't want. How old is he?

Speaker 7 (25:36):
Rachel eighteen?

Speaker 3 (25:37):
He's eighteen years old? What are we doing?

Speaker 4 (25:39):
He's got the worst plus minus since I think since
Lebron as a rookie when he was eighteen or maybe
he was nineteen.

Speaker 7 (25:45):
How did that work out?

Speaker 3 (25:47):
It's gonna be fine.

Speaker 4 (25:48):
I think the bigger story is what's going on with
Anthony Davis. I mean, like Cooper Flag is gonna be okay,
ad Nico Harrison, where's my guy, super Max Christy?

Speaker 3 (25:58):
What's he doing?

Speaker 4 (26:00):
I mean, Rachel, if I'm Cooper Flag, I'm begging Kyrie
to come back. But it sounds like I think you
said he's like this hope that. Oh Kyrie's killing in practicing. Yeah,
it's not like he's coming back.

Speaker 3 (26:09):
In a month or two or three.

Speaker 7 (26:10):
No, no, no, end of the season. Maybe not at all
this season.

Speaker 9 (26:13):
And remember Nico, when he made the trade, the Luca trade,
he put the Mavericks on a much tighter timeline, right, So,
trading for a player in Anthony Davis who is six
years older than Luca, he said he thinks the championship
window was in the next three years after the Luca trade.
That's part of this pressure on Cooper Flag, right, because
if you feel like these seasons are dwindling down when

(26:36):
you have promised to deliver a title. Yeah, I mean
you gotta stick Cooper at guard because he is the
best playmaker that you have out there right now with
everyone else injured.

Speaker 7 (26:47):
It's not necessarily what's best for Cooper.

Speaker 4 (26:49):
Those are rough stats you see on the screen, thirty
eight percent shooting, thirty percent for three, but he's an
eighteen year old rookie, and their best well I guess their.

Speaker 3 (26:59):
Best players ad are Kyrie. I don't know.

Speaker 4 (27:00):
But bottom line is two of their best three players
are out like you can't.

Speaker 3 (27:04):
Expect much from him.

Speaker 4 (27:05):
I think Cooper Flag is gonna be fine.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
I wonder if Nico Harrison is gonna be fine. But
we will see the other time for another day. All right,
read with the news.

Speaker 2 (27:18):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
Herd Line News.

Speaker 8 (27:22):
All right.

Speaker 3 (27:22):
Coming up next, we're gonna go to Vegas.

Speaker 4 (27:25):
Details on did any of these NFL moves move the
needle on Super Bowl contenders?

Speaker 3 (27:32):
We'll talk about that next.

Speaker 2 (27:37):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd Weekdays
and Noon Easter not a em Pacific.

Speaker 3 (27:43):
Back here on the Herd.

Speaker 4 (27:45):
Yes, we are gonna talk a little bit of NFL here,
but I'm gonna wedge in some college football because our
next guest he knows the sport very well. Let's bring
in Chris Felika from Fox Big Noon Kickoff, the Bare
Bet Podcast and most importantly, a long suffering Jets fan
just like myself. We got to talk about. Listen, there's

(28:08):
a lot of fans out there, Chris, who don't get
what it's like to be a Jets fan. I mean,
Packers fans have no clue. You've had three quarterbacks in
the last forty years. I mean New England Patriots. You know,
the lose Brady and then oh you stumble into Drake May.
I'm just telling you, life is the Jets fan stakes.
But Chris, is this the greatest day in franchise history

(28:28):
over the last fifty years?

Speaker 11 (28:30):
It's pretty optimistic. The one thing I worry about is
that weren't we kind of here in twenty twenty three?
All We're gonna have what seven top seven first pick,
seven picks the first two rounds in twenty next two years.

Speaker 5 (28:42):
But it's like, didn't we pick Gary.

Speaker 11 (28:44):
Wilson and Sauce Gardner and Jermaine Johnson in the top
twenty whatever it was in twenty twenty three and here
we are starting all over again. But I do think
it does feel a little bit different this time. It
does feel like they are committed to the tear it
all down and build it back up. I think the
good thing about the twenty twenty six draft is that

(29:06):
I wouldn't feel obligated to go take one of those quarterbacks.
I think if you wait until twenty twenty seven, I
think there's a chance that the guys available on that
draft might be better. But the fact that you're picking
up a late first round pick, if you want to
take a chance on one of those guys in locking
a contract, sure, but I still think the avenue is

(29:27):
a crew assets, a crew offensive lineman, defensive lineman, lineby
real impact.

Speaker 5 (29:32):
Position players and go for that. But yeah, but you're right.

Speaker 11 (29:36):
Remember when Brownie Nagel was the saver for the Jets
and to j Any Testaverdy, We're going to the super
Bowl after losing at Denver, and midway through the first
quarter talls that year he's in seasons over.

Speaker 3 (29:48):
You're right. They did do that in the draft a
few years ago, twenty two.

Speaker 5 (29:51):
I believe.

Speaker 3 (29:52):
Here's the interesting thing.

Speaker 4 (29:54):
In two thousand, in Aaron Rodgers first year Chris, their
win total was nine and a half, the defense was
I think third in the league. They were all set,
and then Rogers gets hurt. They finished seven to ten. Otherwise,
I don't know, are they a ten win team? Remember
Rogers four years ago it was thought to be good.

Speaker 11 (30:12):
I was all in that year, and I can remember
sending Bob was Shoes in the voice of the Jets
and a couple of other Jets fan Zamata like I
am far too confident in August and like we know
how this is going to end. And it lasted all
of what three plays, But you're right that year it
was lined up. They were good, they were legit good.
And maybe it would have worked that because they were

(30:34):
putting all put their trips in the middle of the
table for Aaron, and who knows what would have happened,
But we'll see what happens. The good thing is that
Aaron Glenn has been through this in Detroit, so we
know is what it looks like. And there are obviously
people who may not think that Aaron Glenn should be
the long term solution to a head coach based on what
we've seen this year. But I think also the kind

(30:55):
of the sidebar to what we've seen from the left
problem from yesterday is that they're committed to Aaron Glenn
for much more than this year and next year.

Speaker 5 (31:03):
If they're banking on picks in twenty six to twenty.

Speaker 3 (31:05):
Seven, maybe he's Dan Campbell in three years. I don't
know very easily.

Speaker 4 (31:09):
Yeah, as we transition to college football, let me ask
specifically about a quarterback to Jets could target, and that
is mister Mendoza at Indiana. I was on his LinkedIn
page this morning because he has a robust LinkedIn page.
This guy's already got a business school graduate. He's twenty
two years old. I think he's just hearted twenty two.
I mean, we're talking about a very intelligent, smart quarterback

(31:30):
who I think has had four different offensive coordinators since
he's been in college football. He sounds the part. He
is super impressive on paper, you've seen him up close. Well,
your thoughts on Indiana's quarterback.

Speaker 11 (31:43):
I think he's very good. I would if I am
the Jets. I am not taking him at the top
of the draft one, two, or three. I don't claim
to know everything about the quarterback position, but my co
host Jef Schwartz on Barbat's podcast has kind of really watched.

Speaker 5 (31:59):
Him a bit, being an Oregon guy and really breaking
down that game.

Speaker 11 (32:02):
He's kind of said that a lot of Mendoza's throws
are kind of outside the hashes, outside middle of the field,
and that down the field, middle of the field kind
of throw like he doesn't have that in his arsenal
yet or he hasn't shown it, so I'd be a
little hesitant in.

Speaker 5 (32:18):
Taking him him that high.

Speaker 11 (32:19):
I think this is going to be a great year
for a team maybe like the Titans, who doesn't need
a quarterback at the top of the draft to maybe
try and get when these guys are try to be taken.

Speaker 5 (32:29):
But I think if you're looking at Indiana.

Speaker 11 (32:32):
College football wise, it just kind of feels like it's
building up towards the end of the year. Winner take
all and Indy number one, Ohio State number two. Indiana
winner gets the number one overall seed. Win winners right
number one winner gets the undefeated season winner gets a
Big Ten title and win, or whether it's Julian San
or for Nanda Mendoza, they get the Isis of Trophy.

Speaker 4 (32:51):
Hmm.

Speaker 3 (32:52):
I like that.

Speaker 4 (32:52):
Take Indiana at Penn State. I believe this weekend line's
creeping up. I was going to be that hero and
come out here and be like, hey, you got to
take the points with the Nipny Lions a letdown spot
Mendoza and Indiana number two in the rankings.

Speaker 3 (33:06):
Mendoza being the number one pick to.

Speaker 4 (33:07):
The Jets do they lose focus going into Beaver Stadium.

Speaker 11 (33:12):
I have a hard time seeing Penn State score points.
I took Penn State plus the twenty and a half
last week, got the first and goal, but ultimately I
don't know.

Speaker 5 (33:21):
How Penn State scores.

Speaker 11 (33:22):
I think last week was a perfect example of a
team that you've got a defense that can play ball
and keep you in it for so long and then
finally when the dam breaks, there's really nothing you can do.
And I feel that's kind of the same way this
week's game will go.

Speaker 5 (33:36):
I think Penn State will hang in.

Speaker 11 (33:37):
There for a while, but ultimately I think the one
thing I will say, though, if Sarat is hurt and
the linebacker is hurt and they don't play, that could
change things a little bit. But I just don't think
that Penn State's going to be able to score on
all the points. But your point, your bigger point, is
well taken because back in the four team era, obviously

(34:00):
only have one year of the twelve team eight era.
In the four team era, you used to see when
teams ranked three, four or five, six, seven, like they
were in the mix and they kind of knew where
they were. And the pressure now was on them, like
the realization like, oh my god, we're in the playoff
right now, we control our own destiny. I can remember
a year in Texas, A and M was ranked I

(34:20):
think fourth in the first playoff ranking. They went to
Mississippi States. I got a two touchdown favor and got
beat by two touchdowns. So a lot of times when
these sea teams see where they are and they see
the pressure and they see the realization, it kind of
gets to them, and if they haven't been down that
road before, they don't necessarily always respond the best way.

Speaker 4 (34:38):
Yeah, I've had a great season college football gambling, and
you got to you can never overlook the look ahead spot.

Speaker 3 (34:44):
You know they got Wisconsin next week, Indiana. I'm not
a big one. I'm gonna have joking. Let's quickly go
to the SEC real quick.

Speaker 4 (34:51):
The one complaint is there's too many SEC teams in
this first college football release. Would you agree or disagreement?
I think I saw eight in the top twenty in
terms of rankings.

Speaker 3 (35:03):
SEC's got a lot of good, but maybe not any great.

Speaker 11 (35:06):
I think here's the thing that I think people have
a problem with, and they can't put the two thoughts
in their head and have them like standalone. The following
can be true. Both can be true. The Big Ten
has three of the best five six teams in the
country with Ohio State, Indiana, and Oregon, but the bottom
of Big ten is terrible. The SEC may not have

(35:26):
an Ohio State or an Oregon or in Indiana, but
from one to nine, it's.

Speaker 5 (35:31):
Not even close.

Speaker 11 (35:32):
So I have no problem with the SEC having a
long list of teams in the ranking.

Speaker 5 (35:39):
I think it's right. I think it's fair.

Speaker 11 (35:41):
I put out some numbers this week about how in
conference play, the number of conference games that winning to
it with like a two touchdown favorite or a double
digit favorite with the SEC Big ten, like, it's not
even close. And again it could just be a yearly
cyclical thing. But at the same time, if you're looking
at like number one or number ten in the Big

(36:02):
Ten being like UCLA and number ten in the SEC
being LSU, like, it's like a different it's a different sport.
But I think in the Big Ten situation this year,
it's a little unfortunate because Penn State collapsed and bottomed out.
Illinois was a team people who were banking on. They
weren't necessarily it, but they have a chance here. You
look at the where the committee put some of these

(36:24):
Big ten teams at the bottom, Iowa, USC, Michigan, like
Oregon kind of holds the key here to whether the
Big ten potentially could get that fourth bit in Because
the USC can go to Eugene and win, that gives
them a big win. If Iowa gets a win this week,
that's a massive win. Q dub can beat Oregon in Seattle,
like Oregon is kind of sitting there in the top

(36:45):
ten right now. Was like the like the big shiny
object in the sky for all these teams in the
Big ten that are ranked in the playoff rankings that
potentially could get that quality win to catapult them into
the top twelve.

Speaker 4 (36:59):
You mentioned the whole I'm just gonna put it out
there is the line still six at home against Oregon
because that's a sneaky, dangerous game for the US.

Speaker 11 (37:06):
Is the one thing I would caution people about here
is if you go back and look at the games
Dan Lanning has lost at Oregon, a majority of them
have been to a team which could throw the ball there.
They've allowed like three hundred yards passing through the air,
fifteen to sixteen touchdown passes in the seven losses like

(37:26):
ten yards in attempt. Iowa is not a team that
is going to throw the ball up and down the
field on Oregon.

Speaker 5 (37:33):
It's going to have to be.

Speaker 11 (37:34):
They're gonna have to basically what Indiana did the Indiana
Indiana game, close game, ugly it up, try and control
the line of scrimmage, force Mendoza to short froze, and
not really give them the big play. I have a
hard time seeing Oregon go in here and as Look,
everybody's popular underdog this week has been Iowa, So I
think that plays into Oregon's hands a little bit. I

(37:57):
would be surprised if Oregon went in here and lost.
I think their defense show up. I think it's a
lower scoring game. I don't know if I want to
lay the six six and a half. I think the
Iowa team total under sixteen and a half under seventeen
might be the better way to play this game.

Speaker 4 (38:10):
All Right, we're contractually obligated to talk about Arch Manning
because he had one good game. I think every TV
radio show podcast has to talk about Arch again in
reference to the NFL. Hey, hey, maybe this is his
Joe Burrow first year at LSU and next year he's
going to phote seventy five touchdown passes. But in all
serious is some Texas fans are unhappy with their college

(38:32):
football ranking.

Speaker 3 (38:34):
I will just point out they go ahead, they shouldn't be.

Speaker 11 (38:38):
I think Texas is in in nine and three. I
think where they are the committee. But people can have
whatever paint of the committee you want.

Speaker 5 (38:45):
And they did it right? Did they do it wrong?

Speaker 11 (38:47):
Texas at eleven ahead of Oklahoma is where.

Speaker 5 (38:50):
They should be. Okay, you look at Texas.

Speaker 11 (38:52):
If they go nine and three, that means either they
win at Georgia or they beat potentially.

Speaker 5 (38:59):
An undefeated Tos A and M. They are getting a
ton of credit.

Speaker 11 (39:02):
And look, this is what we all talked about with
the expanded college football Playoff. You should get credit for
scheduling non conference games. Ohio State's clearly getting credit for
scheduling Texas. That's probably the difference as to why they're
number one. Texas, I think, is getting credit for scheduling
Ohio State. You look at they've got to win over
Oklahoma already, They've got to win over Vanderbilde. They add

(39:25):
a win over Georgia or Texas, A and M. Nine
to three with a top ten schedule in the country
and a power rating through the roof and strength the record.
I think at nine and three, Texas is super live
to make the playoffs.

Speaker 4 (39:37):
We got one minute left last one, So let me
to that Texas point.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
I'm going to be real.

Speaker 4 (39:42):
The College Football Playoff is a TV show. We know
that will Texas get a bump and get the edge
over someone else because of Arch Manning and what he
brings to the table, because we saw the TV rating
for Ohio State Texas.

Speaker 11 (39:57):
I don't think that really comes into play with anybody
in this election room. There really is no affiliation with
an ESPN, ABC programmer in the in the selection room
right there. I think that's a little overblown. I get
it how fans would think that Texas Notre Dame Miami,
those brands kind of should be in.

Speaker 5 (40:17):
But look what happened last year.

Speaker 11 (40:18):
Samu got in the playoff, Indiana got in the playoff
over at Alabama or a little miss. So I think
it's a fun thing to talk about, but.

Speaker 5 (40:26):
I don't think it exists.

Speaker 4 (40:28):
I would keep an eye on that. I like that
as a talking point. Chris Filika bear Bets Podcast Big
nowon kickoff. Keep crushing her, buddy.

Speaker 5 (40:34):
We will be good, Bud.

Speaker 4 (40:35):
Thanks Chris Filika, good stuff. You know, Rachel, that arch
banning things interesting. We say that that doesn't matter what.
We just saw the World Series with the Dodgers the
last two years, like people love stars. If you're in
that college football room and you've got the choice of
arch banning versus I don't know. Another team from the
big tener SEC. I think they're going to get a bump.

Speaker 9 (40:59):
Not because they've I think the ratings will be better,
but they're a little you know, influenced.

Speaker 3 (41:03):
By back a bright coming up next.

Speaker 4 (41:04):
One big move that an NFC team did not make,
and it saved their season.
