Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Welcome back our next guest, former NFL offensive lineman. He's
got a lot of connections to the Kansas City Chiefs,
so obviously he wanted them to get Breese Hall from
Mike Jets. He also played at Oregon. Welcome in Jeff
Schwartz from the Bear Bets Podcast. Jeff obviously wearing his
Oregon Ducks year very excited. Hey, how nervous are you

(00:49):
for that that Iowa game? You can't just walk in
Iowa and expect to get a w Jeff.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
That's what I've heard. I've heard for days now. Can't
get win in Iowa. It's too hard it win in Iowa.
It's gonna be a fun game, it's gonna be physical,
it's gonna be a battle between two teams that they
want to do the same thing, both sides of the ball.
Or can get passed the ball a little bit better,
but they've struggled against the better defense to pass the football.
What I'm looking for from organ side is I want
to see some aggressiveness on offense. I felt like the
Indiana game, we play a little too passively, right, we

(01:16):
let Indiana bring it to us. And maybe it's the
wrong idea to let to to you know, to do
that to Iowa. But I want to see some aggressiveness
for our passing. The weather might be bads, we'll see
if that affects that. But I like our defense. I
like that matchup against Iowa's offensive defense is really good.
Iowa can't throw the ball. We have not struggled against
offenses like this in the past. The offensive struggle against

(01:37):
Ohio State, the Washington's, the Indians. We throw the ball
a little bit more. So I'm looking forward. The game
is gonna be little scoring, man Like, It's not gonna
be easy. It's gonna be a grind. Can we avoid mistakes? Right?
I was so good on special teams? Can you avoid
some sort of special teams error? So look what Iowa
does so well, It's very hard to do in this sport.
If they just don't make mistakes, right. They let other
teams make the mistakes for them. And if you can

(01:59):
avoid that's the best path to winning.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
This Saturday, I took the six just a little nibble,
a little action play.

Speaker 5 (02:05):
Let me ask you about Dante Moore.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
I had a Devin Gardner, a college football announcer who
knows Dante Moore well.

Speaker 5 (02:11):
I had him on my podcast.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
He is of the belief that Dante Moore probably stays
in school.

Speaker 6 (02:17):
Now.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Dante Moore was a early in the season. Oh my gosh,
this guy's lights out. Then came the Indiana game and
everybody's pulled back a little bit.

Speaker 5 (02:24):
Where are you on the Oregon quarterback?

Speaker 4 (02:27):
Yeah, I think he stays one more year. I don't
have any inside information, but look this stabs in building
for twenty twenty six. If you look at the recruits
that they have, the transferporter players, the roster, they have
the young at running back, nung get wide receiver, the
young and the secondary. They got a lot of young
defensive lineman. They're gonna be you know, young linebacker next season,
like they sort of been building for twenty twenty six.

(02:50):
And you can make the case that with nil now
players staying sometimes. We saw Ohio State do it last year, right,
everyone comes back. We saw Washington twenty twenty three, they
had like eight draft picks come back to try to
win a championship. They were a couple drives short against
Michigan in that game. So I think that's the cell
is to try to get a lot of these guys
come back, whether it's more whether it's mateos Dee's probably gone,

(03:11):
maybe convinced one of the offensive linement or two to
come back. And it does feel like that's what the
plan is for next season when everyone's a little bit
more seasoned and you have an opportunity, I think at
that time to make a run for the championship.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
While we're on college football, any glaring omission screw ups
by the College Football Committee seem like a relatively clean
and peaceful first offering your thoughts.

Speaker 4 (03:34):
Yeah, it was interesting because this is the first year
we've heard early on that they're going eye test and film.
We've never heard that before, and I've always thought that
was the case, right, I always thought it test matters
are humans watching the games, So I'm glad they're actually
they're actually acknowledging that. I'm telling you guys right now,
the team that is going to be disruptor, and you
have to accept this is Texas if they beat Georgia.
If Texas beats Georgia, they're going to be in the

(03:57):
top seven probably most likely. Whereas why you was dropping out.
If Oregon loses, they're out right like they're gonna be.
Georgia will If they lose to Texas, they're out of
the top seven, and then Texas might be the first,
you know, three loss non conference champion to be in
the playoffs. If they beat Georgia, they go to top seven.
They lose to A and M the end of the season,

(04:18):
They're not dropping out of the top ten losing to
the number three team in the country in a close game.
Let's say so to me, it's Texas, man. I think Texas.
They're playing slightly better every week, which is important. They
can go into Athens and beat Georgia. Be prepared for
Texas the playoff team. I only when people are taking
that as seriously as you should.

Speaker 5 (04:36):
It's weird.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
You know, they suffer the early loss to Ohio State
and then they beat Oklahoma. I mean Matier just coming
off the injury, like I just look at the resume.
I'm like, oh, the win over Vandy's is swell, But
I mean it was Vanderbilt. Who were, you know, smoking
mirrors all season.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
I'm not buying.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
The Texas side. Do you think they can actually win
it Georgia. I haven't seen a line for that game yet,
I would get yes, it's probably north of seven for Georgia.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
I think it's probably about seven. I mean, I think
that the teams are going to are going to rate these,
you know, closer to Georgia has been itching for a loss. Man. Look,
the best thing they've done this season, and I get
Kirby credit, is you know they have been hard to kill,
right he said that to us on the bare bets
Pockets had him on last week. But they've played enough
close games now where one of them is not going
to be in their direction. We know how this goes
with these close games, right. They've had multiple comebacks this series.

(05:27):
They've done a great job. They've won the games that
is important to win the football game. But I'm not
saying Texas gonna win that game. I'm just saying they
play of their close game again. Those are fifty to fifty, right,
and maybe it goes the other direction and Texas ends
up with a win. But again, I don't know if
to your point, I don't if I trust Texas to
win that game. But I just want people to understand that,
like I think we've ignored Texas because the way they

(05:47):
started the season, they're very much in the hunt to
be a playoff team.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
Yeah, all right, let's pivot to the NFL and another
green team had a monster, monster day yesterday.

Speaker 5 (05:58):
That's my New York Jets. You could go ahead and
pick it apart.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
The Sauce deal felt like a bit of a heist
for a desperate team, and the Quinn Williams deal is
laughable from Jerry's perspective, another bad deal by a bad owner.
So the Jets are they winning the Super Bowl in
twenty eight or twenty nine?

Speaker 4 (06:16):
Look, I think you give yourself the best option now
to be aggressive finding the quarterback right, Because look, I
understand trading away core players on defense that are good.
Something Sauce is good. You know, changing the team might
be helpful for him. I certainly Williams can play better.
I think you get dragged out. I've been on bad
teams be where you get dragged down. Sometimes by the

(06:38):
weight of losing. And now you're playing, especially sauce right
for a team trying to be the one seed. You
probably pick your play up a little bit, but you're
trading away those players knowing that you cannot win without
a quarterback, and now you have the am whether it's
this draft or the next draft, to get the guy
in the future. You cannot win if you're on a quarterback.
So I like what the Jets did. I thought if
you would have told them that you end up with

(06:59):
three round picks for their two players, they would be
a static. The Colts took a big gamble. I think
Jerry Jones and Dallas just he needs chaos in his life.
He needs like to always do something and feel something,
so he makes these trades and trade makes no sense.
But I just did a really good job here of

(07:20):
just giving themselves a lot of options come this spring.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
Yeah, I'm gonna look elsewhere in the league. Kansas City Chiefs.
You know a lot of teams reactionary, and I know
they didn't look sharp against the Bills and Isaiah Pacheco
did not play. There's some issues with the run game.
I saw some defensive breakdowns the Bills. Jeff played with
six defensive backs almost the entire game and dared the

(07:44):
Chiefs to run the football on him, and the Chiefs
could not.

Speaker 5 (07:47):
Now, I know they were down some offensive linemen, but
are you surprised.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
They didn't go out and make a move and overpay
if you will, for Breese Hall. Apparently they were offering
a four and the Jet said three or just get
the hell out of Dodge.

Speaker 5 (07:58):
But did the Chiefs need a running back?

Speaker 4 (08:02):
Uh? Yes and no. It would have been nice, I think,
But they don't have a lot of draft picks next season,
and I think that's part of the reason why they
weren't really willing to part with anything more than a
fourth round pick. They have Smith, who's young, and you know,
Chiefs fans want him to play running back. You have
to be able to pass protect and a lot of

(08:23):
times young guys don't play early because they're not ready
for that yet. Smith is new to the position. He
has not played a lot of running back in his
career in college. Like, I think he's just not ready
in that in that part of his gaming. It's so
he's not playing. If he gets up to speed and
pass protection, he could be your answer. He's a he's
a dynamic player at that position if he gets the
ball a little bit more. I was more upset j
Mac with the game plan against Buffalo. You mentioned it, right,

(08:45):
all the defense tackles, hurts, just run the football like
they just sometimes I feel like have their own worst
enemy offensively with some of the game play. I don't
know what that game plan was. They have games where
they commit to under center runs, they have games where
they don't commit to it. And so look, give Buffalo credit,
they played really well. They were the better team. But
I'm the Chiefs just game plan wise, I didn't love it.

(09:06):
And now you have a tough stretch, right, you have
the Broncos off of Buy, like you're in there now.
It's almost a must win if you want to win
the division, like coming off the buy and playing Denver.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
Now, I know I'm a Chiefs hater. Blah blah blah,
let's be real. Patrick Mahomes went pressured three of sixteen
against Buffalo. That's a staggering number. He was He seemed
reluctant to run. Mahomes, I mean, this was one of
this was one of the worst games of his career.
He genuinely looked confused, Jeff. And again, I'm not bashing him.
I know he's won super Bowls, he's a superstar, He's

(09:36):
going to the Hall of Fame.

Speaker 5 (09:37):
But I don't care. I'm just looking at that game.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
He I mean, he was just totally locked up by
a defense that you gotta admit that they have looked
shaky all season.

Speaker 4 (09:48):
I agree, And this is why the game was confusing
to me, because we had seen since Worthy came back
and Rice came back like this offense looked like it
had turned the corner just schematically right. There were guys
open deep, they were doing different things hadn't done for
a couple of years. And they scored twenty eight points
of five straight games. And yeah, some of those teams
weren't great, but that's what you do against bad teams, right,
You score a lot of points, you run the score up.

(10:09):
And against Buffalo, whose defense has struggled, they had no answer.
They had nothing. They looked lost. And that's a surprising
thing because I thought they gotten a point where they
figured out what they want to do offensively and it
didn't happen in this game. So is that indicative of
when we play better teams, you're not as good or
is it that you had a bad game, But again,
you come out of the buy I think it's Denver

(10:30):
and then might be one more than Indianapolis, Like you're
going to come out pretty quickly figure out the type
of team you are. If you lose to Denver, you're
three back I think in the division with what seven
games left, So a really big game off by the
Chiefs have been good historically off a buye. So we'll
see that game goes all right?

Speaker 5 (10:47):
Two more real quick number one?

Speaker 3 (10:48):
Any bits any account this weekend on the NFL front,
I only have Thursday Night Football and Bears Giants, But
it is a tight week of lines.

Speaker 5 (10:58):
Anything jump out to you or if you hit anything
yet j Mac.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
If someone asked me to win an NFL side and
my kid's life were on the line, it would not
it would not be good.

Speaker 5 (11:08):
But going back I have.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
I have not won NFL side in a long time,
and it's been it's been a rough go. I mean, look,
I had. I don't want to get on the national
TV and radio and complaining about my wagers, but you
know I had the Chargers last week they scored twenty
seven points in offense. The times scored six charged didn't cover.

Speaker 7 (11:26):
I don't charge, I don't.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
I don't know what else to do.

Speaker 5 (11:29):
What you sued to do with the team, the process,
I've been.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
Yeah, but I haven't want a waiter at a long time,
so I don't. I don't have I have more college football,
you know, on Wednesday. It's hard with NFL. I like,
uh what, I like UCLA to cover. I like West
Virginia to cover. I like USC Friday night Colin. I
love to hear that to cover against Northwestern. So the NFL,
the NFL sides matter hard. It's just it's a tough

(11:54):
business to be in on those sides.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
And last one McVeigh Shanahan, I'm trying to look at
injury report during commercial breaks. Nothing yet from San France.
I don't know if it's going to be party. I
don't know if Ricky Piersoll is alive. I mean, I
don't know what the hell's going on with the Niners.

Speaker 5 (12:09):
Rams.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
The numbers gone up though I see four and a
half offshore. That seems like a big number. But the
forty nine.

Speaker 5 (12:16):
Ers defense has been sneaky bad.

Speaker 4 (12:18):
Well, it's up and sneaky it's been bad because they
don't have their best players. Like eventually, when you lose
Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, it's going to be bad.
And the Rams obviously have to avenge like what happened
to them a couple Thursdays ago. I mean, I would
probably lean Rams here. I don't feel great about it.
But the Niners defense is a problem because you don't
replace those guys, and they had the one gameess of

(12:40):
Falcons where it was like, oh, you know, we played
really well with our backups, and then since then it's
been a problem. That's not a surprise, and the Rams
take advantage of it. The Rams really until that Thursday
nine game, it sort of owned this series the last
three years. Yeah, so I'm curious to see how they
bunk back from that.

Speaker 5 (12:53):
It'll be a good one.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
Jeff Schwartz Bear Bets Podcast. I would say good luck
to your ducks, but I'm on the Hawkkeys small plus six.

Speaker 5 (13:00):
Have a great weekend.

Speaker 4 (13:02):
You can cover.

Speaker 5 (13:02):
There you go, yeah, there you go.

Speaker 8 (13:04):
Perfect.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
Thanks a lot, buddy, Thank you every buddy. All right,
good stuff from Jeff Schwartz. I wonder if Rachel and
Jeff had a bet on Oregon Northwestern. I don't even
know if they play this season.

Speaker 8 (13:14):
All right, no respect for Northwestern on today's show, all.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
Ry, I haven't looked at the college basketball team seasons underway,
you Joe him.

Speaker 8 (13:22):
It's just it's brutal out here.

Speaker 5 (13:23):
All right, Let's go to Rachel with the news. No, no, no,
this is the herd Line news.

Speaker 6 (13:31):
All right.

Speaker 9 (13:31):
That Cowboys trade. We've mentioned just a few times on
the show. All types of reactions, but here's one from
quarterback Dak Prescott. Dak told the media he was bleeping pumped.

Speaker 8 (13:41):
For Quentin and Williams to join the team.

Speaker 9 (13:44):
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer added, quote, good os to Jerry,
Stephen and will for being aggressive and smart.

Speaker 8 (13:50):
Jason.

Speaker 9 (13:51):
Does that convince you that this was a brilliant move
now that Dak said so.

Speaker 3 (13:56):
I would be so concerned if Dak was like, what
the hell are we doing already?

Speaker 5 (14:00):
You're out of your mind.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
It just I don't see how you move off Micah
and then think you made a mistake and then go
into Quinn Wims and I know it's for next year.

Speaker 5 (14:09):
I mean, you know, da'x had a rich injury history
the last like three or four years, I know he's
been good.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
What are we doing with Pickens in the offseason? Like,
just still a lot of questions. We have a Cowboys
reporter coming up in about twelve minutes who hopefully can
address some stuff. But hey, I will say this about Dak.
The more he talks, the more I like him.

Speaker 9 (14:28):
Look, I knew how down you were on this trade,
so I thought I would look up some other trade
grades from other sources.

Speaker 8 (14:33):
Our own Fox Sports website.

Speaker 9 (14:35):
Gave this a C minus for Dallas. For Dallas, The
Athletic gave it a B minus. CBS gave it a
B minus. Sports Illustrated coming in with a B plus.
So you know, I think most people agree with you
and not.

Speaker 8 (14:46):
Dak Prescott is my point.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
Good stuff there.

Speaker 8 (14:48):
You go, all right to hardwood.

Speaker 9 (14:50):
Desmond Baine got two further pray someone here last night, Yes,
take a look at this.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
Fowel and then what was that about?

Speaker 8 (15:01):
Right? Oh? In The point is because he fells and
then spikes the ball.

Speaker 5 (15:09):
Broh, that is greenery easy? And then he points it
is that a capella or oh no, it's a congo.

Speaker 9 (15:14):
We felled, he got a flagrant, he got a tech.
He said after the game, he was surprised. He was ejected.

Speaker 5 (15:21):
Why'd not thrown me out?

Speaker 8 (15:22):
I just expected a regular foul.

Speaker 9 (15:25):
He finished two for six from the floor three turnovers
before he did hit the showers. That is, Do you
agree with the officials or with Bane? Should he have
gotten kicked out?

Speaker 5 (15:34):
So a quick backup.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
So he was supposed to be like a big pickup
for the Magic Huge. I'm looking at the standing. They're
three and five and struggling. Yeah, I wonder if he's
just frustrated with how things are going. I know there's
some analytic tension. They're actually better with being off the
floor this season. Listen, it takes a while to let
this stuff bake, right, Yeah.

Speaker 9 (15:53):
I mean, look, they were picked though for getting to
the East Finals, so they.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
Were a contender for sure. Currently there are ten this
did not When you just see this highlight.

Speaker 5 (16:03):
You're like, whoa, what's that about? Like, I don't know,
they're not going to suspend him, do you think, I.

Speaker 8 (16:07):
Mean, he has a history of some of these heated insights.

Speaker 9 (16:11):
I don't think the league office is going to get involved,
but they could.

Speaker 8 (16:14):
I mean, that's when they get involved.

Speaker 9 (16:15):
In this kind of thing, it's because oh well, repetitive.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
It's less about it's more than they like.

Speaker 5 (16:24):
In the NFL.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
That's fifteen yards and maybe an eject college.

Speaker 5 (16:26):
Football, they're tossing you target out.

Speaker 8 (16:29):
I'm surprised he was ejected. Wow, there you go. All right,
let's go back to football.

Speaker 9 (16:33):
After Kyler Murray was listed as inactive on Monday night,
there was speculation about his future in Arizona. Speculation is
only growing as head coach Jonathan Gannon announced Jacoby Brissette
will get the start for the Cardinals next week, and
now new timelines are being reported for Murray's.

Speaker 8 (16:49):
Return from his foot injury. Adam Schefter at.

Speaker 9 (16:53):
ESPN reporting it could be another month or two. No,
you said in the meeting this morning, you think this
was like a soft benching.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
You're skeptical about medical report last week on Friday, I
think it was Friday, they said Kyler Murray is not
going to start, but he could have a role. Remember
they used that wording. I think you know the kind
of thing where the team texts all the reporters wrap
up wort Jefferson could have a role. And then it
was like, no, he's in act and active, and now
he could miss a month or two.

Speaker 9 (17:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (17:23):
So I did ask this.

Speaker 3 (17:24):
In the morning meeting and I got, you know, a
lot of thumbs down. And you're out of your mind, Rachel,
four years from now, is Kyler Murray in the NFL
or playing major league baseball?

Speaker 8 (17:35):
I don't think he's playing major league baseball.

Speaker 5 (17:37):
Those are around baseball.

Speaker 6 (17:38):
Pick.

Speaker 8 (17:39):
It's been a wild though.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
Just the attitude I've seen from him in the last
couple of months, and now this is clearly a soft benching.

Speaker 9 (17:46):
I mean, come on, well, look if you look at
the numbers, right, they're just better with percent, right, I'm denial.
The third down conversion rate is near fifty percent. If
you stay on the field longer, you have the chance
to score more. He's scoring with him leading the offense,
wearing more than five points more a game. And if
you look at their results, this is a crazy number.

Speaker 8 (18:05):
Right.

Speaker 9 (18:06):
So they're three and five now, but if they had
been scoring those five points more a game with Brissett
instead of Murray, maybe six and two.

Speaker 8 (18:16):
That's a that is a big spread.

Speaker 3 (18:18):
Nobody's saying Brissett's a franchise quarterback, right, I don't think
we agree. He's a great backup come in for a
few games. But I think what we're saying is Kyler
is not a franchise at this point. Now, maybe he
could be rehabbed like Baker and Darwot and these guys. Rachel,
I would love it if somebody found me a legit
landing spot for Kyler. I keep hearing Saints and Raiders, right,

(18:39):
why would they do that?

Speaker 8 (18:41):
I mean there's usually someone.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
Somebody's dumb enough to be like, I can fix this guy.

Speaker 9 (18:45):
Well, We've seen a lot of guys fixed recently, right,
we have. So I think people now are like, oh,
Daniel Jones is doing pretty well in Indianapolis, like that
sort of thing, and Sam Darnold's doing well in Seattle.

Speaker 3 (18:57):
And check back out in December on DJ Is it
Danny Lou's change?

Speaker 5 (19:02):
Is it Indiana Jones?

Speaker 4 (19:03):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (19:03):
I mean Indiana Jones's good.

Speaker 5 (19:05):
That's pretty cool.

Speaker 8 (19:06):
It's good. You can't blame him for you know, digging
that one.

Speaker 3 (19:08):
And listen, Danie Jones has been great, that's undeniable. I
just when you see the Kyler interviews, I mean there
was a question about him about the new facility in
practice Field. He's like if I'm here, and I was like, wow,
that's not funny bro No.

Speaker 9 (19:22):
And the coaches know that if he comes back in
and if the status of them losing more games than
winning from when he was playing, their jobs are dating.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
And they got McBride and Harrison and they had Connor.
That's a good team. I'm a little surprised.

Speaker 9 (19:38):
But hun, forty eight weeks maybe on that foot injury.
We don't even know what the foot injury is, but
not no specifics, but this the tweet from chapter was
forty eight weeks because if he comes back too soon,
it could do more long term.

Speaker 5 (19:50):
What is this a Jones fracture? We know NBA injuries.

Speaker 3 (19:54):
We need to drill down. Are they are they skirting
the rules here? The Ravens got fined for that Lamar thing,
hunder k.

Speaker 8 (19:59):
It could also be totally legitimate and we don't know.

Speaker 5 (20:01):
It could be Yeah, all right, Rachel Nichols with the news.

Speaker 9 (21:23):
Penn State Big Noon Saturday only on Fox.

Speaker 3 (21:26):
Yes, that's a good one. Klat talked about that game earlier.
All right, quickly, I don't know if you missed it earlier.
Jerry Jones talked about this Quinn Williams trade and listen
to him trying to really sell the fan base on
acquiring the Jets defensive tackle.

Speaker 6 (21:41):
I don't have time personally to have a bad time.
It's not on my schedule, and so I have a
natural urgency because of my age, and so my tomorrow's
the immediate tomorrow a big thing to me. And I
also have enough disciplined not to get in trouble for

(22:06):
years to come, all right.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
So to make sense of it, let's bring in John Machoda,
covers the Cowboys for the Athletic.

Speaker 5 (22:13):
He's been covering Cowboys football forever.

Speaker 3 (22:16):
John, another day in Paradise for you, just your big picture.
The move to get Quinn Williams on the Cowboys?

Speaker 5 (22:25):
Was it for this year? Next year?

Speaker 3 (22:27):
Was it well calculated? Was it an irrational decision off
the Arizona loss?

Speaker 5 (22:30):
Let's hear it.

Speaker 11 (22:32):
So most of us believe that their chances of making
the playoffs are done, and they were ended with that
loss on Monday Night to the Cardinals. But Jerry Jones
is the eternal optimist, and so he will say it's
about this year. You'll talk about how much Quinn can
help him. This season, they did more five down linemen
looks against the Cardinals and that's the plan going forward.

Speaker 7 (22:54):
But realistically speaking, this.

Speaker 11 (22:56):
Deal doesn't get done if the future isn't the big
part of it. If Williams is an under contract beyond
the season, they're not making this move. And so Jerry
can say it's about this season and that he still
has hopes and he wants fans to continue to tune
in and attend games at AT and T Stadium, but in
all reality, it is about next season and beyond. And
as bad as the Cowboys defense has been this season,

(23:18):
and it has been bad, it's been about as bad
as it's ever been in franchise history. A move like
this and there are a few other things they can
do in the offseason where it wouldn't be that hard
for me to sell to you that they could be
a legitimate contender next season.

Speaker 7 (23:33):
This season, though, I'm not going to try and sell
it to you.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
Wow, legitimate contender, that's a quantum leap.

Speaker 5 (23:39):
Let me get so.

Speaker 3 (23:40):
The linebackers are one of the worst groups in the league.
I'm looking at their grades. Again, it's just football focus,
but they're all orange like bottom of the barrel.

Speaker 5 (23:48):
Secondary stinks.

Speaker 3 (23:51):
Listen, two years ago with McCarthy, they had the number
three rated defense, Mike McCarthy at the helm, Michael Parsons
off the edge.

Speaker 5 (23:57):
I don't think they're getting back there even with you.
It should have Logan Wilson and Quinn Williams, do you.

Speaker 11 (24:03):
I don't think they are this season. I really I don't.
I mean, there's just too many issues they've had defensively
for me to think that a player too is going
to fix all of those. But like I said, if
you talk about in the offseason, you got Demarvion Overstown's
coming back, who might be their best playmaker on defense,
who's coming.

Speaker 7 (24:21):
Back from a major knee injury. Now he has to stay.

Speaker 11 (24:23):
Healthy, but you have him with Quinn Williams, Osa Diggi Zua,
Donovan Azeraku who has been a young pass rusher that's
ascending for them. You can you're going to have two
first round picks the next year's draft. You could fix
this defense pretty quickly and offensively. They don't feel like
they're that far off as it is right now, and
so that's why, yeah, right now, you should not be

(24:43):
holding out hope that the Cowboys are going to make
this deep playoff run.

Speaker 7 (24:47):
That's unlikely to happen.

Speaker 11 (24:49):
But beyond this season, No, there's certainly something there where
they could turn this thing around quickly.

Speaker 3 (24:54):
Yeah, we'll get to the offense at a secon but
quick question on the defense. So Bland is not delivering
like a ninety two million dollar man should. He got
roasted on Monday Night football. And then there's the mystery
of Trayvon Diggs, who I mean, as a rookie was
supposed to be the second coming of like frigging Dion
Sanders or something, and now he's got this mystery concussion

(25:15):
that he suffered at home that we don't have an
explanation on, and it sounds like he's going to be
shipped at the end of He's not going to be
here next year. What's going on with with Diggs in
the secondary?

Speaker 11 (25:25):
Yeah, it's unlikely he will be on the team next season.
It just there obviously is a disconnect between him and
the team in terms of the concussion. You know, he's
been in the locker room since then. Now when he
was in concussion protocol, we couldn't talk to him, But
now he's on IR and he hasn't said anything about
any details about how the concussion happened and the way

(25:45):
the Cowboys have talked about it. It doesn't sound like
it's anything of you know, where there was any type
of a legal issue or anything where you know the
police would be involved. So they've kind of just put
him on ir and said that he's rehabbing from another
new knee injury and then obviously because of the concussion,
and so it's kind of like they're moving on with
new players and they probably want to get a look

(26:06):
at some of their younger corners. Savon Ravel, who they
drafted in the third round this year. He's come off
of a knee injury and so he's supposed to return
after the bye week, and I think that that's the
plan for them, And so it's not a great secondary
with them having the two first round picks and next
year's draft, I would bet a lot of money that
one of those two will be on a corner. But yeah,
the idea of having Digs and Bland out there and

(26:29):
Kyrie Elam like was their plan going into the season
has clearly been a disaster.

Speaker 5 (26:34):
So okay, so next season, you know, the optimism, it's
always next year.

Speaker 6 (26:38):
I get it.

Speaker 3 (26:38):
I'm a Jets fan, but I need to ask you
the offense has made a quite a leap this season,
largely thanks to mister Pickens. He's also in a contract year.
Jerry has not signed him yet.

Speaker 5 (26:52):
Maybe that would.

Speaker 3 (26:52):
Probably be a little early, John. I got to ask you,
are they retaining Pickens? I know Jerry loves to string
these things out for the reality TV show that is
The Cowboys, But your best guess is Pickens on this
team next year?

Speaker 4 (27:07):
Yeah?

Speaker 11 (27:07):
Absolutely, And I understand there is a small caveat people
will say whatever I'm about to say now, people will say, well,
you could say this about Micah Parsons.

Speaker 7 (27:15):
So let me just let me add in there that
as long.

Speaker 11 (27:19):
As George Pickens doesn't lie on a training table during
a preseason game and do some of the things that
you know, aggravated the Cowboys front office, you know, in
the two or three months leading up to when he
got traded, I anticipate that they will franchise tag George Pickens,
try and get him signed to a long term deal.
If it has not happened, then I can see them

(27:39):
having him play next year under that franchise tag. Now
that's around twenty eight million for a wide receiver, and
you're already paying Ceedee lamb over thirty million. But those
two have clicked too much for me to.

Speaker 7 (27:53):
Think that Jerry will go in another direction.

Speaker 11 (27:55):
Jerry loves his wide receivers, he loves his offensive playmakers,
he loves his offensive players. That's where he spends all
and so I just don't see a world where he
lets s George Piggins out of the building.

Speaker 6 (28:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (28:04):
Yeah, Can we ask Pickens how he feels about the
franchise tag. He's playing like a top ten twelve receiver
in the league. You know t Higgins didn't love the
franchise tag situation in Cincy. I'm sure Pickens is looking
around the league saying, hey, look what I did to
our offense.

Speaker 5 (28:19):
You guys think it's shoddy. No, no, it's me.

Speaker 3 (28:22):
And that's why Dak is looking like a potential you.

Speaker 5 (28:25):
Know, MVP guy.

Speaker 3 (28:27):
Pickins only twenty four turning twenty five. We know how
things went for him in Pittsburgh when it started to
go sideways. If he's not going to get paid, do
you think we see a little unhappy there?

Speaker 7 (28:39):
Could be for sure.

Speaker 11 (28:41):
Now I wasn't in Pittsburgh, and I can only go
off what.

Speaker 7 (28:44):
I've seen from him.

Speaker 11 (28:45):
In Dallas and I will say his the friendship he
has with Ceedee Lamb.

Speaker 7 (28:49):
I highly doubt he had one.

Speaker 11 (28:50):
Of those in Pittsburgh, and he certainly didn't have the
quarterback he has now in Pittsburgh. And Piggins and Dak
had become close as well. And so there's just a
part with the Cowboys where players can sometimes unite together
and keep each other in good spirits while Jerry's stirring
things up, and so I think that I think that

(29:11):
they can make it work. But yeah, I don't think
he would be thrilled to be playing under the franchise
tag by no means, especially with the season he's having
right now. And he does have the same agent as
Michael Parsons. So there's no shortage of drama in Dallas,
and they will not stop anytime soon either. I'm just saying,
if I had to predict right now, when they open
the season next year, week one, George Pickens is still

(29:31):
wearing the number three for the Dallas Cowboys, All.

Speaker 5 (29:33):
Right, last one?

Speaker 3 (29:33):
Real quick, Brian Schottenheimer, we are eight or nine games
in for the Cowboys. How would you grade him so
far at the midway point through the season.

Speaker 7 (29:43):
I'd say he's probably c plus.

Speaker 11 (29:45):
I think he does everything behind the scenes, and in
terms of dealing with Jerry Jones, that's not an easy task.
There's a lot of other things that come with being
the Cowboys coach. I think he does a good job navigating.
You know, coming into work on a Friday morning, in
your finalizing your game planning, you find out that you're
not going to have your starting corner because he suffered
a concussion at his home the night before. You know,

(30:06):
things like that that a lot of other organizations you
have to deal with. I think Brian is well suited
for that, but you can't really give him any higher
grade than that because the wins just haven't been there
on the field. I mean, to go into the bye
week with only three wins and the hardest part of
their schedules coming up. I mean, I think he has
a chance to turn it around and have them finish strong.
But you know, to not even have consecutive wins through

(30:30):
the midway point of the seasons obviously not great. But
he's not going anywhere. Jerry loves him. He'll be here
for at least another season beyond this one.

Speaker 5 (30:38):
It's weird.

Speaker 3 (30:39):
They play up to their competition, right Eagles, Packers and
then down Caleb Williams loss, Bryce Young loss like eh,
all right. John Machoda covers the Cowboys for the Athletic
Great stuff, John, thanks a lot.

Speaker 5 (30:53):
Enjoy the Jerry scene.

Speaker 7 (30:55):
I will, I will, thanks for having me on.

Speaker 5 (30:57):
Yeah, all right, good stuff Cowboys.

Speaker 3 (30:59):
Never adult moment. You know that's a job. When I
was a young guy, I wanted my job. I wanted
to cover the Lakers. I'm not kidding. And John is
probably basically covering the Lakers just in the NFL crazy
never a dull moment.

Speaker 5 (31:10):
All right, great show.

Speaker 3 (31:12):
First things first is next Coward's likely back tomorrow. He's
listed as probable on the injury report.
