Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Here we go our number two here on the Herd.
Gorgeous Wednesday, tons of news, college football, NFL obviously, a
little NBA action. It's me Jason McIntyre in for and
under the weather Cowherd. He did text me within the
last hour, so there is proof of life that he's alive.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
He said.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
He's expected that Maniana, it's not you know, I'm just
have to carry the show with the help of the
great Rachel Nichols. And it's official. Rachel and I will
be at the Lakers game together, not together tonight, We'll
be there. Rachel obviously has better connections than I do.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Maybe other seats.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
I'm gonna live. You better see you were at the
paper Clips against Shake Gildos, Alexander and okay see last
night doubt and that was that.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
Man the Oklahoma City Thunder have not missed a step
despite the fact they are missing their second best player.
They're undefeated and they don't even have Jada right now,
so it looks like, you know, a lot of people
after it took seven games to win the finals were like,
I don't know, it's right open again next year. I
don't know, man, They're young players, they have experienced now

(01:31):
and they Shay said at the beginning of season, we're
only going to be better at this season, and he's right.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
So I was the free throw merchant. What did you
do last night? I'm just kidding, o Casef answer man,
they don't love me, but yes, you guys are dominant, undefeated.
I will apologize, you know when it's due time, all right,
coming up in five minutes. I guess Joe claud will
be here. Very excited. Fun fact, I've never sat and
just had a one on one with Klatt for a
while because you know, it's what coward does. And I'm

(01:59):
very excited to talk to a lot of tough, hard
hitting questions about my Jets. But real quick, briefly, I
want to talk about what did not happen at the
trade deadline yesterday, and I think Colin might have started
this like, I don't know, six weeks ago, should the
Eagles trade aj Brown? And I was here snickering, like, bro,
what are you talking about? And then things were kind
of wobbly and I started to think, well, maybe there's

(02:20):
a world where they trade Hi. Anyways, the Eagles do
not trade him, which was smart. Obviously, he's a stud.
He's a top ten receiver in the league. You need
him to beat man coverage. We know Jalen Hurts has
kind of struggled against the zone with only one option.
I thought it was a good move. But if you
look around the league, interestingly, the best teams nothing. You guys,

(02:43):
see what the Buffalo Bills did yesterday. Nothing. They didn't
listen to the outside noise, unlike Jerry Jones, who basically
is listening to TikTok. I mean, like the elected officials
in this country, what's going on online. I've got to
react to it, like that's what Jerry Jones are doing.
The smart people, Howie Roseman, Buffalo Bills. By the way,
did the Lions do much yesterday? They're one of the favorites.

(03:04):
Did the Green Bay Packers after losing Chucker Crafter Chucker
Craft a tight end. How about the Kansas City Chiefs,
did they do anything? Nope. Listen closely to what Howie
Roseman said about the Eagles standing pat.

Speaker 5 (03:16):
When you're trying to be a great team, it's hard
to trade great players. And Agent Brown's a great player.
He wears the CEA for a reason. He's an important
part of this team, of this organization. He cares about winning,
he cares about his teammates. And you know, I think
that when you're a team like ours that is looking
forward to an opportunity to compete for a championship, you.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Just don't get rid of the guys like that.

Speaker 5 (03:41):
And so feel very lucky to have him on our
team and excited about the second half of the season with.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Him very well said, I love it, Howie Rosevean just
keeps winning. And I'll just wrap up with a fun
stat from the staff this morning. You know who's made
ten trades in the last eight and a half months.
The Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jets are making moves. Not a
great sign. So smart teams do nothing right, and the

(04:08):
bad desperate teams, the Colts, the Cowboys, they're reaching and
grasping at Straws. All right, let's bring on Joel Clat
the voice of college football, the former legendary quarterback at
Colorado Legendary. Wow, I want to go over here.

Speaker 6 (04:20):
Oh man, they put a little tower up here. Vipao
is so low.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
Hi, Rachel, you know some of.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
Us are only five to three and.

Speaker 6 (04:29):
You need a little That's exactly right. What's going on?

Speaker 3 (04:32):
Man? Are you so good to have you here? Former
college baseball.

Speaker 7 (04:36):
Star can we never played in college. You played minor league,
minor league after high school. Yeah, let me go that.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
Well, well, hey, you know, it's it's tough out there.

Speaker 6 (04:45):
It is.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
It is. Joel's calling Indiana Penn State. I tried to
talk Chris Philka yeah, into maybe taking the points with
the Nitney Lyons, any chance of that.

Speaker 7 (04:55):
I mean, I'm not going to get into the points
on the game that I'm calling. I will say like,
Indian is as good of a team as there is
in the country.

Speaker 6 (05:02):
They're complete.

Speaker 7 (05:03):
What I love is talking with opposing coaches and you
get an idea of the weaknesses for the other teams,
even more so than just watching the film yourself. And
what's fascinating to me over the last couple of years
is that when I talk with anybody that has either
played Indiana or is about to play Indiana, they all
say the same thing, which is, this is the best
coach team that we have played. And it's one of

(05:26):
the reasons why I think Indiana was so aggressive locking
up Kurt Signetti as the job opening started to fly
around the country. They are incredibly well coached. They've got
a Heisman caliber quarterback. They run the football as well
as anybody in the country. In fact, I think they're
second in the power for running the ball five times
they've run for over three hundred yards, and their defense
is top ten. So there's not a lot of holes
with this Indiana team. I'm excited to cover them again

(05:48):
as Penn State just tries to kind of keep themselves
afloat first game there since they fired James Franklin.

Speaker 6 (05:53):
So that'll be a interesting environment.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
Should be half full stadium maybe on Let's hope is
a little bit.

Speaker 6 (05:58):
More than that. Come on to stay faithful.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
So I want to ask you, you know, I love
talking to the announcers here of Fox cause you guys
meet with the coaches and players. Yeah, and so you've
met with Mendoza. I assume multiple times. So as a
Jets fan, we now have a war chest of draft picks.
And I was like lukewarm on Mendoza and I'd read
this Wall Street Journal article about his LinkedIn page. He's
graduating from the HW School of Business at CAL. I mean,

(06:21):
this guy's had internships at yeah, big time, like real jobs.
He's is super intelligent. And I'm talking myself into Mendoza.
I wan't to know what's he like when you meet him.
We know what he's like on the field.

Speaker 7 (06:32):
I mean this in the most positive sense. Okay, but
the first time I sat down with him, I was like,
is this like Kirk? Is this Kirk Cousins just coming back?
He is very similar to Kirk Cousins, very similar, and
the way they approach very smart. I will say, like
he can he can be a little robotic, and then

(06:54):
as the conversation went on, it got more fluid and
better and better. But he's process oriented. He is an
incredible player. He's very accurate with the football, he's smart,
and he's developed into what I think is going to
be easily a top ten pick.

Speaker 6 (07:09):
It's to me it comes down to style.

Speaker 7 (07:11):
So if you're an organization or a team in the
National Football League that wants to major in short passing
efficiency RPO style, run pass option style offense. And there
are those out there, think Mike McDaniel's and Mike McDaniels
at the Dolphins, there's others. You know, Mendoza is going
to be a great option for you, whereas like Ty
Simpson from Alabama is a little bit more pushed the

(07:32):
ball down the field, a little bit better in the
intermediate zones. Those two are going to be widely considered
maybe one and two. I think Lenora Sellers will get
some action as one of the better quarterbacks as well,
just because of skill set and traits. But to me,
if I was up there and selecting in the top five,
the question would be Ty Simpson or Fernando Mendoza.

Speaker 6 (07:53):
I think that they're that good.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
So let me ask you, as a former quarterback. Are
you of the belief that let's just use the jets. Hey,
we see what Mendoza does really well, we want to
draft him and then cater to his skill set.

Speaker 7 (08:05):
One hundred percent? Okay, So I would agree with one
hundred percent. You've got to have the right fit or
else it doesn't work.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Yeah, Lamar Jackson is obviously the great example. Hey, this
guy can run, he can't do much else. We're just
going to cater to his skills. And then he developed
the other ones, came a great passer. So when you
see Mendoza six or five, big strapping guy. But you
said the word process, I hear process. I think brock Perty.
Now Purty's obviously much smaller.

Speaker 6 (08:27):
He would do really well in one of those offenses.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
Oh, Kyle Shanahan offense.

Speaker 7 (08:31):
Yeah, yeah, I mean everyone does well and Kyle Shanahan offenses.
But because because he's so smart and accurate with the
football and on time with the football, anybody like a
Sean Payton. He I mean, obviously Sewan's not drafting the quarterback,
but I'm just trying to give you an example of
these styles of offenses that he would flourish in. He
would do very well in those. When you watch him play,

(08:52):
one of the things that he does that's very subtle
is that he's what I would call like on platform,
very quickly, very quick. So when he gets that ball
and he takes out one punch step and then he's ready,
and then he's got a very quick release and he's
accurate with the ball and he knows what he's looking at.
So from my standpoint, that's what's going to pay dividends
for him in particular early in his career as an

(09:13):
NFL quarterback is the fact that he can be on
time and on target. It doesn't take him a long
time to throw, it doesn't take them a long time
to process information.

Speaker 6 (09:22):
Everything happens fast.

Speaker 7 (09:24):
And when you're moving from the college level to the
NFL level, that I mean, that's the single trait that
can help you succeed the earliest.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
I did hear his brothers at Indiana? I don't know.

Speaker 6 (09:32):
Yeah, that's right.

Speaker 7 (09:32):
Well year is he he's a younger guy, so he
gets in like Fernando goes out there, he starts blowing
people out, and then his brother gets in the ballgame
and then he's over running around on the sidelines.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
As preat it's not a locked the windows that comes
out before we get to Simpson, Indiana, Penn State. What
are you hearing on the Penn State job? Because I'm
not hearing good things at this point.

Speaker 7 (09:51):
Well, it's not that you're not hearing good things. It's
just that there it's a tough process right now, for everybody,
whether it's Florida or LSU. And the reason is is
because the candidates that you would like have either got
locked up already, like Kurt Signetti or Matt Rule at
Nebraska got an extension. Dan Lanning has come out and
said unequivocally I'm not leaving Oregon. Well, these are some
of the main targets. Maybe not Matt Rule, but at

(10:13):
least there was a tie to Penn State. So it
leaves the pool of candidates is starting to minimize even
before you get into a real full search towards the
end of the year. And yet the timing of the
calendar in college football is so broken that you've got
to be ready to go in December. You've got to
sign a high school class in the first week of
December and then be ready for the transfer portal, which

(10:35):
is now in the month of January. So if you're
not ready to go by then, you know, like what happens?
Where do you go? If you're hiring a coach. So,
for example, let's just say one of these jobs, whether
it's Penn State or LSU, and they decide, you know what,
Lane Kiffin is our guy. Lane has not gotten an
extension or at least hasn't signed when an Old Miss
yet he has not come out and said I'm not

(10:56):
leaving Old Miss. So now Florida is going to target him.
In fact, I know that they've already and given Florida
is talking about an offer if it hasn't already hit
his desk, It is to make him the second highest
paid coach in college football. That's going to be matched
by LSU. I'm almost certain about that. If Penn State
wanted to get in there, Well, here's the problem. If

(11:16):
Ole Miss goes to the playoff and they play in
the second in the third round, Lane's still coaching at
Ole Miss during the transfer portal window being open, so
he doesn't even have an ability to build a roster.
So that's what's broken about college football from a calendar perspective.
That's why I would look at guys like an Alex
Golish at South Florida who's done a heck of a
job at South Florida. That could be a name that's

(11:37):
popped up. I think Brian Hartline is a name the
assistant coach at Ohio State that's going to pop up.
These guys that could potentially move before the transfer portal
window and not be tied to a team that could
be still playing in the middle of January.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
And anything on James Franklin before we get to the
college football rankings.

Speaker 7 (11:54):
I've heard that he's pretty close to Virginia Tech. He
will definitely coach again, and he will have success. The
guy was not a bad football coach. I mean, he
came up short in the most difficult games out there,
you know, namely like Michigan when they're in the top
five or Ohio State when they're in the top five.
So he's going to go someplace and he's going to
make them a better program. James is a heck of

(12:14):
a football coach, and I hope he gets back in
and I know that he will.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
I spent two years of Virginia Tech. Did Jim Druckenmiller error,
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. I had a couple classes
with those guys, I think Franklin.

Speaker 7 (12:25):
I can just see j Max just jumping up and
down to Inner Sandman at at Lane Stadium, some.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
Goofa football players in the back of the class, and
I would kind of matriculate toward them because I was
at the school paper. Nobody cares about that. Anyway, Let's
get to the college football playoff rankings. Joe, I didn't
see anything to get, you know, very upset about it. Yeah.

Speaker 7 (12:43):
No, I thought it was a pretty good ranking, to
be honest with you, as solid of a first committee
ranking as I've seen in the playoff era, going back
to the four team playoff. Here's one of the things
that I think helps the committee out is the expanded
twelve team playoff, because we have an understanding now just
intuitively that okay, this is to play out BYU and
Texas Tech are going to play this weekend. Iowa and

(13:03):
Oregon are going to play this weekend. You know, A
and M has to travel and they're going to be
on the road at Missouri. A couple of things that
stood out to me though, just takeaways major takeaways from
the top twenty five. Number one is that this committee
values the big ten much more so than the AP does. Like,
for instance, the team with the biggest discrepancy between the

(13:24):
two polls is actually Iowa. Iowa is ranked, if you will,
just outside of the top twenty five by the AP
at twenty six. Well, there are plus six at twenty
for the Committee, and I think rightly. So the AP
has devalued the middle of the Big Ten all year long.
I'm not sure why, but you've also had Michigan sitting there,
USC sitting there, Washington sitting there. So now there's a

(13:45):
path for a Big Ten team to be the fourth team. Like,
let's just say one of those teams can win out
and be ten and two, then there's definitely a path.
Another thing that stood out to me is Texas at eleven.
I thought that the committee was telling us, if Texas
goes nine to three, we're probably going to put them in.

(14:05):
They're sitting on two losses now, but think about it. Now,
think about it. They already have them above OU. Obviously
they beat Ou. They have them above Utah. Utah has
nothing on their schedule that would that would propel them
above Texas. And there is no way the ACC is
going to get valued over Texas because we already see that.

(14:26):
You know, the highest ACC team is ranked fourteen with Virginia.
So here's Texas and down the stretch they've got to
travel to Athens and play Georgia and then they're going
to host Texas A and m the number three team
in the country and the number five team in the country. Well,
if you value wins, one of those wins is going
to keep them or even elevate them all the way
inside of the top ten, which means I think that

(14:47):
they could lose one of those games and still be
included in the losing both No.

Speaker 6 (14:52):
No.

Speaker 7 (14:53):
Eight and four, they're out because oh you could win out,
then you could have one of those ten and two
big ten teams.

Speaker 6 (14:58):
There's there's a host of the things.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
They're not winning at Georgia.

Speaker 7 (15:02):
Come on, they might Georgia is do you remember Rick Riley,
even though I'm not a huge fan of Rick, which
is fine, I can't believe I just said that. Yeah,
he wrote an article way back in the day about
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Now, like Tiger was just
you know, watching him play golf was just like rigid
and focused, and then watching Phil Mickelson play golf was

(15:22):
like watching a drunk chase of balloon next to next
to a cliff.

Speaker 6 (15:25):
He had this line.

Speaker 7 (15:26):
I don't know why it's always stuck with It's just
like that was his line, his line, and and you know,
like for Georgia, it kind of reminds me of that
because it's like Why are you behind in all of
these games? You know, every SEC game, it's like they're
they're down. They they have to create some great play.
They're at the whim of a review, like they were

(15:48):
on that third down catch no catch against Florida. You know,
like Florida's sitting there. If they get the fourth and one,
you know, they could sult the game away. And and
so I don't think that it's just a sure fire.
Oh absolutely, George is going to beat that Texas team
because Texas is actually playing their.

Speaker 6 (16:04):
Best football right now. Well, it's interesting they were handling
Vanderbilt handling and then.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
Nearly choked it away. You're right, they were spotty early
during the season. So let me pivot to ask about Arch.
I mean, he was pretty rotten early in Dreadful. Okay, dreadful,
I like your word better than mine.

Speaker 7 (16:22):
We tiptoe around because of his last name, but even
even those guys would probably appreciate honesty. Arch was dreadful
early in the year, and he's gotten better in the last.

Speaker 6 (16:34):
Couple of weeks.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
He was good, But can he go to Georgia and
perform like he did against Vandy and then that A
and M game that's not a layup, even though they're
at home. Where are you on Arch?

Speaker 6 (16:44):
Have you seen a arch? Arch is.

Speaker 7 (16:49):
A decent to average college football quarterback early in his career,
and he's going to need at least twenty more starts
to be even remotely ready for the national.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
Football guy three, we can still say it's early in
his career.

Speaker 7 (17:01):
Well as far as number of starts, he's early in
his career. You know, again, this position, the position of quarterback,
there is no way you can replicate it. So I
don't care if it's your third year in college or
if it's your first year in college. The only thing
that matters is number of games started. Okay, Now, can
you be a little more comfortable? Sure, I guess, but

(17:22):
you can't replicate the position anywhere other than on the.

Speaker 6 (17:26):
Field live in games.

Speaker 7 (17:28):
And so as he's starting to develop, as he's starting
to start more games, you're starting to see him get
a little bit better. Now, we all thought he was
going to come out and be gangbusters and be Trevor
Lawrence right away or Bear Bachmeyer. The quarterback at BYU
is eight to er right now as a true freshman,
and it didn't happen. It didn't happen. But here's what
this position is all about is repsent experience. If you

(17:50):
take a look at since the turn of the century,
the quarterbacks that have actually won Super Bowls. So you
take a look at the list of guys that have
actually won Super Bowls. And I think we've talked this
on the show, and I'm sure you've you've been riveted over,
you know, in the corner as I'm saying this to.

Speaker 6 (18:06):
Colin, But.

Speaker 7 (18:08):
The average college career of all the guys that have
won super Bowls is around thirty to thirty four starts.
In college football, you have to have a deep level
of experience before you get to the NFL. So here's
my everyone fans out there, just let Arch play a

(18:29):
couple of years. Ok Again, he is twenty starts away
from being remotely close to an NFL level.

Speaker 3 (18:35):
Okay, So to that point, a quick aside to my
guy Ty Simpson at Alabama, I love what I've seen
from them. You just said him and Mendoza top ten picks.
He's got like eight start nights.

Speaker 7 (18:45):
I would choose Mendoza because of that very specific thing.

Speaker 3 (18:48):
I wanted to make sure that that's now.

Speaker 7 (18:50):
He's likely going to come out. He's going to be
rated up there. But again, the experience factor would tend
to if you're just looking at history, favor a guy
like Mendoza because as he started more games since.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
And sat behind a bunch of guys who were like anyways,
Cowhard's now texting me. He wants a question about USCTRC.

Speaker 7 (19:08):
Does I was going to say, we were about to
get through one of these without us.

Speaker 3 (19:11):
Well, your guy Lincoln Riley after the win over Nebraska
was complaining, Hey, we ended our game after midnight. We
have to fly back in the middle of the night.

Speaker 7 (19:17):
I can't stand when coaches would complain about the schedule. Listen, listen, listen. Coaches,
all of you and all of you that do this,
do you like the money or.

Speaker 6 (19:29):
Not, because that's what it is.

Speaker 7 (19:32):
You know, you all complain about not having enough money
to pay your players now and the revenue share and
all that, Like we're paying one hundred and sixty seven
million dollars and buy out money in college football. That
revenue needs to come somewhere. Guess where it comes from television,
you know, like, deal with it. I don't know what
to tell you, Like I I really I I'm sure

(19:54):
that he was. And Lincoln, generally, I would say, is
better about that than others. So if he was joking,
you know, that's good. He finished after midnight plenty of
times in the PAC twelve when they were in PAC.

Speaker 6 (20:05):
Twelve after dark.

Speaker 7 (20:06):
Yeah, listen, is travel and game and game kick times
more difficult in college than it is in the NFL? Yeah,
you know, but we also don't split games up, so
you're not on regional television in college football. You're on
national television in college football.

Speaker 3 (20:19):
I thought that that.

Speaker 7 (20:20):
Win for USC was really important for them, winning on
the road. There's this old adage I've always thought, you
you lose big before you lose small, you lose small
before you win small, and you win small before you
win big.

Speaker 6 (20:30):
And they're they're.

Speaker 7 (20:31):
Turning that corner from losing small those one possession games
a year ago to now winning some of those games,
and the way that they did it, leaning into their
run game, not having a great performance from their quarterback
Jane Mayava. That's important for them.

Speaker 4 (20:44):
You know.

Speaker 7 (20:45):
If they just go out there Maava throws for four
hundred and they win by a score, it's like, Okay,
did we really learn anything or grow as us. No,
but if you go out there and you win with
defense after the injury obviously to Dylan Royolo, which is
which is a bummer for Nebraska, but they leaned into
the run game they got it. Mayava was not good
in that game and they still win. Now they're set
up as a one lost Big Ten team in conference,

(21:07):
obviously after losing to Notre Dame and Illinois, but one
loss in conference and.

Speaker 6 (21:11):
They've got a chance to be ten and two.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
That's my next question. So I'm looking at the schedule
Northwestern and that's a win this week versus Iowa. That'll
be tough, but I think they very tough. And then
the Oregon game is the Oregon game, essentially the season
for Lincoln. Ryley will go to the playoffs.

Speaker 7 (21:26):
I mean yes, the way that the schedule lines up,
but they still have to handle their business and a
team like Iowa is still their kryptonite that Iowa does
not care at all. They will run it fifty two times,
they can't throw the football, and they're going to play
great defense. So Mayava likely struggles again against Iowa, even
if that game is at home, and they're going to
have to win in a gritty, low scoring fashion. So

(21:49):
of all the games, I think Oregon is the biggest
threat because it's Oregon, it's on the road. But the
sneaky game, the sneaky, tough one for us, is going
to be that Iowa again.

Speaker 3 (21:59):
Yeah. Remember the Illinois game was kind of fluky at
the end. They could have won that easily. And then
Notre Dame. I believe it was a one score game
with like seven minutes left.

Speaker 7 (22:06):
They definitely had their chances. They blew it on special teams,
they failed in short yardage, didn't lean into the run game,
and they couldn't stop the run. And Iowa again will
run it fifty two times. They will not care, and
they will shrink the game down. My album might only
get the ball seven times.

Speaker 2 (22:21):
In that game.

Speaker 3 (22:22):
Yeah, not ideal. I know the buyouts are everywhere. Is
Lincoln Riley safe?

Speaker 5 (22:27):
Ya?

Speaker 6 (22:28):
Yeah, he's safe.

Speaker 3 (22:28):
Okay, that's nice, He's safe.

Speaker 7 (22:29):
I do think that this team, I think I think
they finish at least nine to three. That not only
retains Riley obviously, but it also retains their class. This
is the number one recruiting class in all of college football.
The trajectory for USC is actually very positive. Everyone gets
so upset at Colin and I because they are with
USC and I get it because Colin always always brings

(22:50):
it up. But that program is on the correct trajectory
and like I said, go through that process, lose big, loose, small,
win small, win big, and they're on that trend.

Speaker 3 (22:59):
Last one, Uh, we got to talk about Lane Kiffen.
I don't know, are you close to him because he
loves to talk to the media. He's getting combative. I
know you said earlier, hasn't ruled out anything. He's not
going to the NFL, right, this is Miami Dolphins nonsense.
I know.

Speaker 7 (23:14):
No, I see Lane at LSU, Really I do.

Speaker 6 (23:20):
That's a top three job in the sport.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
Yeah. The last time you said that here, I was
biting my tongue, like why it's just not anymore historically, yes,
and I know in the past everybody's won, But don't
you feel the playing field is leveled to the point
that LSU is not that much better of a job
than what miss I mean, mis Lane Kiffin is calling
the shots right now for late hold On.

Speaker 6 (23:46):
Is a better job than.

Speaker 3 (23:49):
For so the money is not that different Joel. Okay,
he runs the show he's got total he could say
whatever he wants at LSU. Who's calling the shots there
by the way him, No, I haven't looked at my phone.
He's dealing with the Board of Governors. Yeah, Colin and
I disagree greatly on this. I just think the landscape
has changed with NIL collectives.

Speaker 7 (24:09):
I know that I thought this was going to be
just a really good experience and then you and then
you hit me with that right at the end.

Speaker 3 (24:15):
So just to be clear, it's for Lane Kiffin, not
anyone else. Like Lane Kiffin is running things. He doesn't
answer to nobody at all.

Speaker 6 (24:23):
This I disagree.

Speaker 3 (24:28):
Okay, so you know, Lane Kiff, it's as Joel, why
do you I want to take the LSU job? Sell
me on it. If confirm, I.

Speaker 6 (24:34):
Don't have to say you on it.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
One.

Speaker 7 (24:36):
You can open up the back door and you can
get a top four recruiting class, just just regionally. They
have more resources than anyone, maybe other than Oregon. It's
just quieter than Oregon's. They've got they've got oh yeah, yeah, yeah, oh.

Speaker 6 (24:51):
Yea yeah, multiple multiple billions.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
Sure hasn't shown up in those playoff trips.

Speaker 7 (24:55):
They were able to build a roster that was pretty substantial.
And granted I don't think Brian Kell he was a
good fit there. Lane would probably be a great fit
at LSU.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
And you want to wait him out? Huh oh yeah?
January second, Lane, you're in the semi final.

Speaker 6 (25:10):
We'll see that worth it.

Speaker 7 (25:11):
We'll see Lane's going to be the top three two
paid coach in college football.

Speaker 3 (25:17):
Do we do a friendly wager that doesn't have to
be monetary? I believe he stays at All Miss.

Speaker 7 (25:22):
Well, what are your options? You tell me who's the
better option. You don't think Lane Kiffin is a great fit,
So who's a good fit?

Speaker 6 (25:29):
No?

Speaker 3 (25:29):
No, I think for Lane Kiffin staying at Old Miss
makes sense.

Speaker 6 (25:32):
Okay, So who does LSU hire?

Speaker 3 (25:33):
I honestly, I don't know that it's that attractive. Let
me use that word attractive of a job now, given
all the upheaval with the AD, the border governors, all
this nonsense that's going on there. I mean, Joe, you're
walking dough into a hornet's nest. Two or false.

Speaker 6 (25:47):
False take the Crans away? What are we doing?

Speaker 5 (25:52):
All right?

Speaker 1 (25:52):
Guy?

Speaker 3 (25:52):
Here we go? Colin has checked in what about Lane?
In the NFL New York Giants, Jackson dart Reun.

Speaker 6 (25:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (25:58):
No, no, shot no.

Speaker 7 (26:00):
And I said this, I said this to Colin last week.
I still think that as big of issues structurally that
college football has, it's still more appealing to guys that
have a heart for college football because of the influence
and immortality that is offered in college football that is

(26:20):
not offered in the NFL. Find go, go work in
the NFL, and you can win a Super Bowl, you
can win multiple Super Bowls, and all anyone is going
to care about is who is your quarterback? But in
college football, like you, you're the king. You know, you
win a couple of national championships and they build a
statue of you out in front, and that program is
always yours. You are the quarterback of that program. Plus

(26:43):
you still have the ability to influence eighteen to twenty
two year olds, grow them, develop them, you know, from
young men into men. And that's I think that's still
something that is appealing and attractive to a lot of
guys that stay in the college level and is not
offered at the NFL level.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
Good stuff, Joel Klatt, I'm sorry to derail things with
LSU's for right. We'll talk off Jell me. It's fine,
it's such a good job, of course, just not right now,
All right, Coming up next, we got some news here.
Two NFL teams would not talk to each other at
the deadline. Rachel's got the info for us.

Speaker 2 (27:16):

Speaker 3 (28:00):
Fun stuff with Joel Klatt. He almost fell off the
stage one I said for Lane Kiffin ole miss makes
more sense than LSU. I'm sure everybody will be reasonable
online about that. Obviously. Let's go to Rachelikles with the news.
Turn on the news.

Speaker 2 (28:16):
This is the Herd Line news.

Speaker 4 (28:19):
We all almost fell off our seats. But you know, Jason,
the Seahawks who active at the trade deadline. They acquired
former Saints wide receiver Rashid Shahed. Remember, Shahid played for
the Seattle offensive coordinator Kubiak last year in New Orleans,
so he knows what he's got now. She'd is twenty
seven years old. He has forty four receptions for four

(28:40):
hundred and ninety nine yards, two tds and nine games
this season. He will be a free agent at the
end of this year, but Seattle definitely needed some reinforcements
outside of JSN. So do you like it, Jason, what
do you think?

Speaker 3 (28:52):
You like it a lot? Yeah, it's weird. I feel
like Seattle's more of a contender in the NFC than
like Indian Pergar in the AFC because they got to
play really, really strong teams. Yeah, I think there's a
good move. They got weapons on the outside. Donald is
playing great, the defense is pretty formidable. Seattle is a

(29:13):
dangerous team right now, assuming Donald could keep it up.
We saw what happened at the end of last season
with Minnesota. Well tough, but yeah, I would have Seattle,
you know, not much behind the Packers and Eagles in
the NFC.

Speaker 4 (29:27):
I just like that she's such a deep threat. Yeah,
because they already have some moved the chains, but he
really provides. I think in the last three years he's
only behind Jamar Chase and Tyreek Hill and catches over
forty yards.

Speaker 3 (29:40):
Oh wow. So that's a good company to be in.

Speaker 4 (29:43):
That's a good, good, good acquisition there, all right. The Broncos,
on the other hand, sat out at the trade deadline.
They did not try to muscle up for a possible
Super Bowl run, and maybe they don't need to. They
are sitting at seven and two, first place in the
AFC West, tied for best overall in the NFL. Quarterback
bo Nicks was asked about his team staying quiet, and
he said, there's a reason Denver didn't make a move.

Speaker 3 (30:05):
Take a listen.

Speaker 8 (30:07):
Obviously, if there's a need, you want to get it.
But we feel like we're we got all the pieces,
and so sometimes when something like that happens, it shakes
things up, and you know, we got some good going
and we just want to keep riding this wave and
find ways to win.

Speaker 3 (30:23):
Now, j Mac.

Speaker 4 (30:24):
The Broncos did reportedly reach out to the Dolphins about
wide receiver Jayalen Waddell, but the price was a first
round pick. They just decided too much. Do you agree
with Bonnicks? You think they're good the way they are.

Speaker 3 (30:35):
I was just going through their roster and I'm like,
they're kind of stacked. I mean, Shirtan's on the ir
that obviously hurts. I can't find a discernible weakness other
than bow knicks, really, and you're not replacing him or
find a quarterback. So if he can get it together,
just tighten it up. He struggled on the deep ball
this year, struggled on really everything. I think they're in

(30:56):
good shape. Now, this is interesting, this Raiders game. This
was the first bet I made this week, and I
you know, start looking into the game and I'm like, oh,
the Broncos have the Chiefs. After that, Chiefs are off
a buy? Does Denver let one slip here against the Raiders?
If they should lose, then they're playing the Chiefs and
next thing you know, they're out of first place. Right, So,
I mean, bon Nix has to be great. I think
this is a pretty dangerous Denver team. But I don't know,

(31:20):
you've been doing this long enough like I have, Like
I got to see it in the postseason from bon Nicks.
I've seen it from Lamar, from Josh, from Mahomes, like,
I need to see it in the playoffs, like cheez,
look at those stats. They were a dominant fourth quarter team. Yeah,
I think the Broncos made a good move not making me.

Speaker 4 (31:38):
Well, look, I mean, you can't see it until the playoffs.
Until the playoffs come, right, So the best they could
do is where they are now. I like that they
didn't add a receiver. I think bon Nicks improvises a lot,
and that requires a lot of sort of rhythm and
knowledge and knowing where your receivers are going to be
and them knowing where you're gonna do. And you throw
someone new in that mix halfway through the season, I
don't know. Yeah, I'm not sure that that would have

(31:59):
been a good bet.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
Well, I also like your point about you got they
got to have a chance to do it in the playoffs. Like, Okay, see,
I doubted them. I need to see it in the playoffs.
That's gay. Well we saw it.

Speaker 4 (32:10):
You're still doubting them, yes, little bit, love bit, little bit.
Yesterday we saw six traits, mate, Jason. That is the
third busiest deadline day in the last thirty five years.
But here's the juiciest.

Speaker 6 (32:22):
Story for me.

Speaker 4 (32:23):
I love this one. Reportedly, the Titans, who are in
cell mode, weren't willing to do business with the Patriots.
According to one report, Titans owner Amy Adams strunk she
did not want to make deals with Mike Frabel because
of how Rabel's tenure ended in Tennessee.

Speaker 3 (32:40):
J Mack.

Speaker 4 (32:40):
You know, I like to say, there's no petty like
NBA petty, but this is close.

Speaker 3 (32:45):
Well, this is this reminds me that Belichick story from
a few weeks ago that he wouldn't let Patriots scouts
come to practice or whatever. So I got to ask you, Rachel,
like I get petty. We all hold grudges. It's kind
of human nature. But at the end of the day, like,
are you doing a disservice to your team?

Speaker 4 (33:04):
I mean, look, the Titans are one and eight some
salary relief, so I would say, trade whoever you can
with whoever you can. But look, Rabels, we all know.
Look he took a bunch of assistance with him. There
was definitely some bad blood at the end of his
last season there. She thought that he had too much
control over the roster. She put in a GM to

(33:25):
sort of balance that back out. He didn't like it. Yeah,
so I mean you know that there's stuff.

Speaker 3 (33:30):
Well, is that GM that she put in the one
that traded A J. Brown? I don't think so. Well.
I mean, like again, Rabel's a really good coach with
what he's done. In one year, he had the Titans
the number one seed with Ryan Tannhill as quarterback. I mean,
I know they had Dereck Henry, but I don't know.
It's just listen, if you bashed Belichick for what he
was doing to the Patriots, right, I think you kind

(33:52):
of got to say I got to bash the Titans
for doing this and not Yeah, I mean you got
to make your team better. I think you got to
do it, right.

Speaker 6 (33:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (34:00):
I mean, look, Rabel was great for them, right, three
times in five seasons, made the playoffs, first championship game
in seventeen years, sorry fifteen years for that franchise, and
the end. Don't you have to feel better about his
tenure than how it ended?

Speaker 3 (34:16):
Yeah? All right, total agreement Rachel with the news.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
herd line. All right.

Speaker 3 (34:25):
So yesterday we had midterms around the country. I was
playing in a mensley game and prepping for the show.
I have no idea what happened. I do anyway, So
today we're doing NFL Midterms Rachel and I. It's going
to be fun. That's back after this.

Speaker 2 (34:42):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in noon Eastern nin am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (34:53):
Back here on The Herd wrapping up the second hour,
and Rachel had some good little tell well piece of
information you want to reveal it. I don't know that
this is public info yet.

Speaker 4 (35:05):
It's mainly for you because you're coming to the Lakers
game tonight. Mookie Bets, Will Smith, Tyler Glassnow Lake Snell,
Evan Phillips, They're all coming to Laker Spurs. The Dodgers
continuing to celebrate. Yeah, you know, as if Freddy Freeman
doing the worm wasn't enough.

Speaker 3 (35:25):
So they'll be celebrating at Webbin Yama Lakers tonight. Good,
good one, All right, Rachel. Midterms happened last night around
the country. Midterm elections, very exciting stuff. We decided we
do an NFL version of it here.

Speaker 4 (35:37):
We go all right, I'm like your ballot and then
you can cast it. Right, So ballot question number one,
j Mac, who gets your vote for coach of the year?

Speaker 3 (35:45):
All right, This one, to me is not that difficult.
I'm casting my vote see this year on the screen
boom for Mike Vrabel of the New England Patriots. I
long believe everybody that if you can do more with less,
you're the man for the job. And I absolutely love
the move the Patriots made. I think Rabel's been phenomenal.
How about this stat six and zero when quarterback Christian

(36:07):
Gonzales plays breaking news he's not on the injury report today.
According to Rabel, that's great news, huge game for them
against the Bucks. I just think Rabel's done a phenomenal
job a year ahead of schedule. All right.

Speaker 4 (36:18):
Question number two, which means we're already up to more
than was on the California ballot yesterday. Who gets your
vote for MVP in the midterm?

Speaker 9 (36:25):
All right?

Speaker 3 (36:26):
This one another layup. I'm casting my vote.

Speaker 4 (36:29):
Here we go.

Speaker 3 (36:30):
Most Valuable comeback Player of the year. Oh, most Valuable
Player of the year. MVP, baby, yeah, MVP. This one
was not difficult, folks, and that's a Sammy Darnold. Yes,
the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks. I know some people, Jason,
you're crazy guys just by the numbers, and this has
bothered me. Sam Darnold has been absolutely tremendous with Seattle.

(36:51):
The numbers are ridiculous. I know his odds are not great,
but he's the best downfield passer in the NFL. Seattle
rebooted at quarterback and wide receiver one and they're perfectly
fine getting Sam Darnold is the MVP of till now right,
So there, yeah, justin now, yeah, there you go.

Speaker 4 (37:07):
All right? Who does now? Now do it? Who gets
your Comeback Player of the Year?

Speaker 3 (37:11):
Yes, another easy one. My guy carrying my fantasy team.
I'm casting my ballot for Christian McCaffrey. Oh my gosh.
The usage is through the roof, probably too much, but Rachel,
he's been dynamic. It's interesting. Saquon Barkley really struggling this year.
Christian McCaffrey, who missed most of last year, he's back
with a vengeance. I'm not going to rattle off the numbers.

(37:31):
By the way, he is the favorite to win and
Comeback Player of the Year, but He's on pace for
a two thousand yard season with rushing and receiving yards
one thousand each. Pretty impressive.

Speaker 4 (37:40):
Yeah, all right, now, so this is the part of
the ballot like when they ask you to pick judges
for getting a little more the end of Louise Right,
who gets your vote for Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Speaker 3 (37:50):
This is tough because abok has been phenomenal. Tyler Warren
has been transformational. T Mac pretty damn good. I am
casting my ballot for Jackson. Yes, the ladies man in
New York City. He's got the popular mom. He's very cool,
swagged out. Have you seen the photos of him calling
up to New York City clubs? Yes, I mean, listen,

(38:10):
he's got the drip going on, heavy necklaces, like a
white T shirt, baggy pants. I'm like, okay, I need
that look. I mean, he's been the man and on
the field, Rachel, he's got like nobody's Malik Davis has
gone Skataboo's hurt. I gotta say I was wrong on Dart.
I think he's been outstanding Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Give it to me. He's a favorite.

Speaker 4 (38:29):
By the way, He's got nobody but he's got charisma.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
J man, he's got the rims your daughters like to say. Exactly.

Speaker 4 (38:35):
Defensive rookie of the year?

Speaker 3 (38:36):
Who you got? This was a little more challenging some
strong candidates a duel. Carter's been good, not amazing. Guys
from Seattle, Dallas, Philly. All well, but I'm gonna cast
my vote. This is with the toughest one on the ballot.
Jihad Campbell, the young linebacker for the Eagles, has basically
stepped into a Super Bowl winning team and not missed

(38:56):
a beat. I cannot believe how good he's been. Second
best odds right now, behind Carter. He's grading out as
the fourth best linebacker in the NFL as a rookie
according to Pro Football Focus. Jehad Campbell, Jahad Campbell, just
outstanding rookie year.

Speaker 4 (39:11):
All right, so now that's the rookies overall. Who's your
vote for best offensive player of the year so far?

Speaker 3 (39:17):
Yeah, I don't think this is much of a challenge
the ballot easily. I know you want to hear Jonathan Taylor,
but no Surrey JSN Jackson Smith the JIGBA he's emerged,
I think is the best receiver in the NFL folks,
He's open on every play. Look at the stutter step
at the line of scrimmage. He's shaking everybody. JSN absolutely
love it. Offensive Player of the Year.

Speaker 4 (39:38):
Yeah, and what about defense? Who's your on nuts defensive?

Speaker 9 (39:40):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (39:41):
This one because I don't like Jerry Jones casting that
ballot for mister Micah Parsons. I know Garrett had the
five sack game. Hutchinson's been great. Micah Parsons amazing. Plus
he's got a badass face mask. Loklyy that that is cool.
I cast my vote for Micah Parsons and the Super
Bowl bound Green Bay Packers.

Speaker 4 (40:01):
You're you're just as petty as the Titans owner apparently.

Speaker 3 (40:05):
Yeah, they love it.

Speaker 4 (40:06):
Who gets your vote for the team who will finish
with the most regular season wins?

Speaker 3 (40:11):
Yeah? I had to look at the schedule and going forward,
I'm casting my vote for the Buffalo Bills. I feel
like they unlocked something during the bye week, totally bottled
up Carolina, which had been rolling, and then body bag
the Chiefs in a big spot. I think they're in
really good shape. The schedule bears it out. They have
the Dolphins left, they have Jake Browning, Dylan Gabriel, Justin Fields, Rachel.

(40:35):
They're cooking. Yep.

Speaker 4 (40:36):
All right, so this is the last one, which California
team will finish with the better record.

Speaker 3 (40:42):
There's three? Yeah, well we're going to California. The screen,
the segments pretty fire, except with damn ballot box. Uh yeah,
California team there it is. I'm going with the Rams
because I'm I'm buying what cow Hurd is drinking, not
the Musenex the other stuff. I think this Rams team,
Oh my gosh, the schedule lines up really really well
for them. They're they're crushing teams. How about the stat

(41:05):
least penalized team in the NFL for the second straight season,
and Stafford has been lights out, old man Stafford, Puca Davante,
My vote for the for the Ranks.

Speaker 4 (41:15):
Yea, all that hand ringing preseason about Stafford's back and
totally fine.

Speaker 3 (41:20):
All right, coming up final hour, I'll tell you why
one team in the NFL had the greatest day Enfranchise history. Hint.
They wear great and white jerseys.
