Where Colin was right and wrong, with former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck joining Colin to discuss the situation with Lamar Jackson and his availability for Baltimore come Sunday and how Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has played down the stretch. The Browns find themselves as a crossroads with Shedeur Sanders, and if the right guy doesn’t come out this year, Colin thinks the offensive line should get reinforced instead.

to The Herd podcast. Here we go, hour two and

(00:23):
a Monday. Man Hasselback five minutes away. We're live. It's
The Herd last night, as good as the NFL gets
Niners edge pass, the Chicago Bears drama in Pittsburgh. Who's
left offensively to help? Aaron Rodgers, San Francisco and Seattle?

(00:44):
How good is that? It is great to have you
in a Monday. Let's not waste any time. Where Colin
was right, where Colin was wrong on a Monday, where
Colin was right, well well, well slinging Sammy Darnold. You
know quarterback with consecutive thirteen win seasons in NFL history.
It's Brady Manning, Rogers, Farv and Sam Darnald. Yeah, he's

(01:09):
in pretty good company. Just goes to show your first
job isn't always your best. Sam Darnald never worries about
the occasional mistake always looking forward. He and JSN, by
the way, that has got to be a top five
combo going forward. Where Colin was wrong, probably been a

(01:29):
little tough on brock Purty, or maybe he's just getting
better because the last month brock Purty's aggressiveness, efficiency movement
has been stuff for the Ages. And let I know,
Garoppolo was good in San Francisco, it wasn't this good.
He wasn't this aggressive. I thought yesterday was as good
as he's played. I mean, just making ad libbing, playing

(01:52):
with instructure, and I like the fact that he throws
a pick six and it doesn't get him down, It
doesn't change his mood or body language. The number two
red zone offense. I know Kyle Shanahan's great, but this
is the best quarterback play he's had since Matt Ryan
won the MVP. Where Colin was right, Mike vrabel I
had predicted New England will be a playoff team. They're

(02:14):
going to be the double your win total team. They
tripled it and they fixed everything in one season. Remember
when we didn't like their wide receiver room, Well, their
top five offense, top five defense, and they've immediately surpassed
Sean McDermott year one. That's not the way it should
be now. Now Drake May's good. Is he this good?

(02:37):
I don't know, but this was to me the easiest
offseason call. With all that free agent money, Josh McDaniels,
Mike Brabel and an improving Drake May, this team's going
to get good fast, and they did. Where Colin was wronged,
the Colts have lost six straight. Maybe they shouldn't give
up two first round picks for a cornerback. Sauce Gardner.

(02:58):
I have defended the head coach and the GM, but
even the Philip Rivers story he went ohero for three
Daniel Jones, the truth is who he is sort of
surfaced eventually. Right now, they're not close to Jacksonville offensively
in their own division, and they're a mile from Houston defensively.
So at best they are the third best team in

(03:22):
a pretty wonky division. I was wrong where Colin was right.
I never bought into Aaron Glenn. I mean, they've been
blown out four straight games by twenty three or more.
It looks like the players have quit. How can you
be a defensive coach and not have a single interception
all season. That's kind of historically embarrassing. It's okay, Nat Hackett,

(03:43):
you knew early. David Cully, Freddie Kitchens, Jim tom Sula
like some coaches feel like coordinators, not head coaches. But
this has been pretty bad. This has been pretty bad
where Colin was wrong. I figured Chip Kelly, Pete Carroll,
Gino Smith would late be interesting. I didn't know they'd
be awful. I mean, Gino can throw the ball and

(04:07):
Chip Kelly and Pete Carroll and they got housed yesterday
by the New York Giants. Now the good news is
they have the number one pick and they're going to
draft the quarterback out of Indiana. But I almost think
Max Crosby. Is it time to trade Max Crosby? He
deserves better and you can get more draft capital because
they feel like the Raiders feel like they are a
mile away Where Colin was right. Excellent NFL reporter Ian Rapaport,

(04:33):
Saturday reporter. Yes, the Giants, if they had the number
one pick, would consider moving Jackson Dart and drafting Fernando Mendoza.
Why wouldn't you? Jackson darts three and eight not eight
and three. Jackson Dart's fine. But if your scouting department
says Mendoza has a much higher ceiling, then you go
listen to your scouting department. The Giants offense has been

(04:54):
mostly dismal for a decade. Everything has to be on
the table when you're the Jet. When you're the Giants,
you know, everything has to be on the table. You
can't say, well, we've got our we got our franchise quarterback.
As I've said, I like Jackson Dart. He spends more
time in the blue tenth than an RII manager. Not
good enough where Colin was right. Finally, JJ Reddick, this

(05:19):
was my concern when the Lakers were red hot without
Lebron James JJ Reddick admitted, since Lebron returned, we haven't
been organized offensively. There's just too many possessions that we
are wasting. This is what I said. Lebron won't play
defense anymore, and all you're doing is taking the ball

(05:40):
out of Austin Reeves or Luca's hand. And this idea
that well Lebron will make it work. Yeah, but I
mean he's been the best player in the league for
about fifteen year stretch. He's also got pride and so
this is a disjointed, uneven roster. The pressure now on
Rob Polinkott to make some moves or maybe it's sort
of a lost here. But JJ Reddick saying the honest

(06:03):
part out loud and the uncomfortable part. Lebron coming back
has made things a little difficult too. Colin right, Colin
wrong in a Monday and with that, Matt Hasselbeck, eighteen
years in the NFL joins us. I gotta say, maybe
I have Maybe I have trait bias where I like

(06:24):
my quarterbacks to be big and strong. Maybe I have
draft bias where if you're the last guy taking in
a draft, although Kurt Warner and Tony Romo were undrafted.
But the last three weeks with Brock Purdy, now that
his toes healed, red Zone, he's aggressive. I mean I
watched last night. I'm like, yeah, you can get to
the super Bowl with that. I guess I just whiffed, right,

(06:46):
I mean, I was just wrong on him.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yeah, yeah, you're coming around. I mean I like to
see it.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
I mean, I think it was a long time you
were complaining about certain things. But you're not alone. Listen,
he doesn't pass the eye test like you see him.
He looks like he might be a college kid or
a high school quarterback. He doesn't Wowue with those tangibles,
but his intangibles are.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Off the charts. And when you talk about a.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Guy like Kyle Shanahan or John Lanchard, these guys who
understand how to evaluate quarterbacks.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
He clearly is their guy.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
And you talk, you listen to his teammates talk about him,
whether it's Trent Williams or Kittle or McCaffrey.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
They're like, no, no, this is our guy. This dude's
a dog. He's a beast, and.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
I think we saw that the other night. He plays
on rhythm, He plays from the pocket, outside the pocket.
I think Kyle Shanahan does a really nice job with
the shorter quarterbacks, getting them outside the pocket just as
much as they're inside the pocket for better vision, you know.
And he's got moxie. He started over forty games at
Iowa State. There's something to playing when you're in college
and not sitting and watching. And you know, I think

(07:47):
he's a little bit more agile than people realize.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
That is included.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Yeah, No, I'm he is way more athletic than I've
ever given him credit for. He's been dinged up a
little in his career. For the first time in a
long time, he's healthy and he he moves well. Now,
I said, if you're the Bears, my bigger issue is
I don't think I thought they were reactive on defense,
not proactive. Sola's got nothing to work with and he's blitzing,
he's mixing stuff up, he's trying to make Caleb a

(08:12):
little uncomfortable. He made him just uncomfortable enough on that
final play. But overall, I kind of feel like second
straight game Caleb didn't get sacked, didn't have an interception.
I think you got to feel pretty good if your Chicago,
you lost a track meet. You've been winning all these games.
If you're gonna lose, you can lose with the hottest
offense in the NFL. What was your take on the Bears.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
Yeah, well, I think three games in a row where
Caleb's played really well and really encouraging. This was just
a great offensive matchup. You know, you got Ben Johnson
on one side, Kyle shand Down on the other. Really
fun offensive game. If you love defense, you're probably you know,
pulling your hair out just a little bit. But explosive
plays trick plays, quarterbacks being really elusive, doing it on time,
doing outside.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
You know, I think there's still opportunities.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
One team had to go home the loser, right, And
so when you watch the film the next day, you
can usually point to three to five plays that if
we just make one of those plays, we win the game.
And you heard Chris Collinsworth on the broadcast last night,
you know, allude to it like, man, if we just
had a ticket, if you could have just found a
way to get the ball to this guy this one time.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
And that happens in every game.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
And I think that's why this game was so fun
to watch, and it's also why I think everyone's excited
if if it happens again. But now, it was a
good quarterback battle last night, and I got to give
credit to both guys played really well. Just one guy
made the play at the end and the other guy didn't.
And you know they might meet again and it might
be different the next time.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
So much fun, such a fun NFL game. I'm going
to support the Bills going for it. I thought the
Eagles defense was on the field the entire second half.
You have Josh Allen, you're at home, You're favored. I'm
gonna go with it. I'm gonna I'm not gonna be
a backsheat guy. Were you okay going for two in Buffalo?

Speaker 4 (09:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (09:57):
I would have been good either way. Like either way,
you could make the argument for not. You know, the
Eagles hadn't done much offensively, but then again, we're at home.
I got Josh Allen is my quarterback. I've got a
two point play. This is what happens when you decide
on your two point play the night before, or maybe
even two days before, in an air conditioning room with
a group of people.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
You right on your.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Big call sheet.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
Okay, if we've got fourth and goal to win the game,
our two point play is what what are we calling?
And you feel really good about it sometimes? And I
bet you they thought really good about this play.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
The play worked.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
And you know, Josh Allen, he's got to be kicking himself.
Ninety nine out of one hundred times he makes that throw,
guarantee it. It was kind of shocking to see him
not make it. Now.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
He's banged up, he's got a real bad foot injury.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
He maybe he can't push off, feels the pressure, bad weather,
all the stuff. But no I'm in favor of going
for that, I'd and I'd be in favor of calling
the exact same play again in the exact same situation.
I'd feel good about the quarterback making play.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
The Eagles are so weird I can't even wrap my brain.
AJ Brown was feeling it. The short passing game was working,
and then they just pulled the plug On the offense.
They have four of the worst offensive halves in the
league this year, and that's counting all the bad offenses.
Explain to me what happens as well as you can

(11:17):
with this offense about every other week.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Who knows, man, Like if you got it, if you're
an Eagels, and like, who knows. This is what I
would say about it, though I'm not A win is
a win, right, And we're not going to apologize for
that and all this stuff, right. And I've gotten on
here before and have said, hey, listen, it would be
better if the offense, instead of turning the ball over
and playing sloppy and stuff like that, it would be
better if you took a knee three times and let

(11:41):
your punter punt. I mean, I remember doing the rams
Seahawks game earlier this year and the Rams. Darnold had
an un characteristic day through four interceptions, and I said,
if the Seahawks just would have taken a knee three
times and let their punter punt, they would have won.
And that's kind of the mindset that it felt. Philly
went with a little bit in terms of, hey, play safe,
let our punter punt, our defensive playing.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
Actually really really well.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Thirteen to nothing lead most of the game, it's a
scary lead, thirteen points. No one really loves the thirteen
point lead. It's a weird I don't know, maybe I've
been burned too many times. But then you let your
punter punt and then just you know, don't step on
the line when he downs a perfect punt on the
one yard line.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
You know, stuff like that.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
Execute well on special teams and help your defense play.
But no, it's a little it's a little frustrating when
you're used to Phillies offense being good. But there is
a complimentary football aspect to this, where just don't screw
it up when you're up by two scores.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
So it's I mean, it's just so Pittsburgh. So I
like healthier Baltimore even if Huntley plays because I think
he's a pretty capable backup. I watched him beat the
Bears this year. He's good. Derrick Henry, Zay Flowers, I Harball,
I this is rough. Washington broke his arm. DK's not around.

(12:57):
I don't even know who their number one receivers. They
don't have really a dependable run game, and they quit
on it sometimes. Do I like Baltimore in the final week?
Do you? And where are you with Pittsburgh today?

Speaker 2 (13:11):
Well, I'll start with Baltimore. I don't.

Speaker 3 (13:13):
For whatever reason, Lamar Jackson just doesn't look like Lamar
Jackson this year. You know, I don't know if it's
on the field, off the field. It's not the same
Tyler Huntley. You know, for whatever reason when he's in
the game, they lean more on Derick Henry. They use
a Flowers in the run game, like they get a
little bit more of what I think about Baltimore raven football, Like,
we're going to be the hammer, not the nail.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
We're not going to get too cute now.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
Now the Steelers on the other side, they're not operating
at full strength. You mentioned DK, huge loss, Washington, huge loss.
I would love to see Aaron Rodgers under center. More
using his Hall of Fame brain, getting them into the
right play call, using his cadence, taking advantage of free plays.
It's something the things that he does better than anybody

(13:57):
in the world, really, But this idea him just dropping
back and empty and throwing to his guys that he
feels comfortable with, even if it's not a great matchup.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
That's not winning.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
I just don't think that's their best formula. That's kind
of what he tried to do Aaron Rodgers did last
year with the Jets. That's not the thing to me.
I think where he can be exceptional is when he's
just sort of running the offense, you know, using all
the skills and experience that he's had that he has
and helping the players around him, mainly the running backs,

(14:28):
be successful. And again I think it's like point guard
not shooting forward. And if he can do that, they
can be They can actually do some damage in the playoffs.
But they got to kind of, like, I think, take
a hard look in the mirror and say, Okay, what
do we really do best right now?

Speaker 1 (14:46):
So you know, it's really interesting. I'm watching Green Band
Molik Willis and he goes in Tennessee and Mike Rables
and win now mode, and so they don't pay a
lot of attention to the leak. They're not going to
be there to monitor Durham and mentor him. He goes
to Green Bay and there's no necessary urgency. You know,
Jordan loves your franchise quarterback. So he gets a really

(15:08):
good coach, Matt Lafleur, He gets a really good organization,
he gets really good players. And then you watch Malik
Willis after a couple of years and you're like, oh,
this kid, kid, this is why he was so well
thought of. He also went to a small school in college, Matt,
so the NFL was a huge jump and that, you know,
that doesn't help. And so I watch him now and
I watch the Packers and I'm like, Jordan loves the

(15:30):
franchise guy. If you ran a team in this league,
because there's not going to be many quarterbacks in that
first round, do you think Malik Willis? I look at
that talent and I'm like, is he a franchise guy
or is it just Lafleur the environment? And he's just
a really really talented bridge guy. But I'm watching Saturday

(15:51):
Night and I'm like, man, there's a lot there, Like
I get why he was drafted at a liberty so high.
Would you roll the dice on Malik Willis? Is it
environ or is that kid a franchise? What do you
what do you see?

Speaker 3 (16:02):
Are you saying as you're starting quarterback in free agency?

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Is that what you mean?

Speaker 5 (16:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (16:06):
Just go for it and sign him to a three
year deal. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
It's interesting because I remember when he came out, a
lot of people liked him, some people didn't. And you know,
I remember he was the third string quarterback in Tennessee
and he was an afterthought and it was about well
Levis and Mason Rudolph and these guys, and you know,
clearly your environment does matter. Green Bay is one of
those places that even back when I was the backup there,
even before I got there, Brett Favre, Mark Brunell, Ti Depmer,

(16:32):
Steve Bono, like, there's like a lot of guys there
in the room. They over invest in the quarterback position,
and Malik is one of those guys in a long
list that play really really good football. I think Matt
Lafleura does a great job. I think Kyle Shanahan does
a great job. I think Sean McVay does a great job.
There's a lot of these guys that come from that that,
Kyle Shanahan, Mike Shanahan, Gary Kubiak now Clint Kobiak Tree

(16:54):
where we have a system that we believe in.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
It's not all on you to go play playground ball.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
You just have to try trust us, be coachable, and
let the offense work for you. It's sort of like
just add Milkin Starr kind of deal. And some guys
are able to make that jump and some guys aren't.
And I think Malik is a great example of a
guy that plays within the system, has great coaching around him,
and clearly is a problem for defenses. He's kind of

(17:20):
overachieved for what his expectation level was. Would I make
a jump on him if you're running that exact same offense,
I think you can do that.

Speaker 1 (17:28):
Yes, yeah, yeah, it's fun to watch. Okay, So Seattle
plays San Francisco and it's interesting just to be instructive.
Niners opened as a one and a half point favorite.
The Sharps, the wise guys all bet Seattle, and I
was telling j Mack he loves Purty, and I said,
Brock's one of those guys that if you give him

(17:49):
time and you don't speed him up. Sam Donald's a
little like this that Brock is highly effective. If you
speed Brock up. If you speed Donald up, then you
because these guys are aggressive, throw the ball down the field. Well,
San Francisco is not gonna speed Donald up. They have
no pass rush. Seattle can speed Brock up. So I

(18:10):
think Seattle is probably the play here. What do you envision?
You know Seattle so well Seattle San Francisco, you've seen
both so many times. What is that going to look like?

Speaker 3 (18:22):
Well, this is a really good Seattle team, and I
know people have been sleeping on them until probably this morning,
you know, on the national scene. This is probably the
best defense they've had in a long long time. This
is the most points they've scored on offense, I think ever,
you know, you go back to Week one though. In
Week one, Seattle played San Fran and they just didn't
look like themselves. And sometimes that can happen when you

(18:44):
play your friends. And Clint Kobiak and Sam Donald, they
came from San Fran. Kyle Shanahan like they know our offense,
and they it was unrecognizable. What they decided to be
on offense. In that first matchup, they didn't have a
fullback in the game. They were an empty formation, and
I think they just got to get back to Hey,
this is our identity and I don't care what you

(19:05):
know about us.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
We're going to do what we do.

Speaker 3 (19:07):
And I think if the Seahawks do that the second
time around, offensively, yes, I agree, sam Donold will have
time to throw and he'll be comfortable. On the defensive side,
I think Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy to Marcus Lawrence, those
are underrated guys that can get pressure on Pergy. Yes,
but again he's very, very elusive and just so if
you just beat your guy in front of you, that

(19:28):
doesn't necessarily mean that you won the down.

Speaker 2 (19:31):
Kind of got to play team defense to the whistle.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
So now I think the number one seed in play
at San fran I think this is a too close
to call a game. The NFL got it right. Saturday
night prime time should be a great one.

Speaker 1 (19:44):
Matt Hasselbeck on a Monday, Wild night, last night wild games.
Great seeing you man.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
All right, buddy.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
See. I am a fan of aggressive quarterbacks, but when
you speed up aggressive quarterbacks, that's when the turnovers happen.
That's what happens with darn It happened with Andrew Locke,
and brock Purty is not in this league because he
plays it safe. Brock Purty's aggressive. He is really aggressive,
and sometimes it burns you. Last night, not a lot

(20:11):
of pressure. He had the second most time to throw
brock Purty did last night of his entire career. That
is not going to be the case with Seattle. They're
going to be on him and that game plan. You
can't just sit seven step drop it against Seattle. Doesn't
work that way. So I can't wait for it.

We got all sorts of stuff going on. Diana Rusini
does great work NFL reporter joining us last hour. Oh
is this the best time of the year? What Jmack
with the news? No news, this is the herdline news.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
All right.

Speaker 6 (21:31):
You didn't really talk about Derrick Henry much. His monster
game Saturday night in Green Bay. Colin propelled the Ravens
into a win and in game obviously helped by the
Browns beating the Steelers.

Speaker 5 (21:43):
But Sunday Night Football this week.

Speaker 6 (21:45):
It's Raven Steelers, a classic rivalry, AFC North on the line,
playoff spot on the line, Derrick Henry just an otherworldly
performance essentially.

Speaker 5 (21:55):
You know, Harmon remembers, Oh, I screwed up last week
and gets the Patriots. I forgot to feed Derrick Henry
in the fourth. So what does he do?

Speaker 6 (22:02):
He overcompensates thirty six carries thirty six Colin, that's absurd
for two hundred sixteen yards and four touchdowns. You know,
I mean you could argue that he needed.

Speaker 5 (22:13):
To keep feeding him. I don't know. They were up
fourteen in the fourth.

Speaker 6 (22:17):
How's Derek Henry going to perform the week after thirty
six carries well against the Steelers?

Speaker 1 (22:22):
He doesn't. I mean, the bottom line is, these teams
know each other. Dereck Henry probably shows up at practice
and doesn't he doesn't, you know. I mean, he's basically
in recovery all week. He's also like one of those
baseball pitchers that gets better from the fifth inning on,
like sometimes Derrick Henry has. You know, I don't know
what the historical numbers are, but he had this very

(22:42):
slow start to his NFL career first couple of years,
but he just keeps getting better and better. He's often
better late in games where he's got twenty five plus carries.

Speaker 6 (22:50):
So I think he'll be fine for the for the matchup.
So the latest is Lamar Jackson. They're calling it a
shade under fifty percent. I don't know how you quantify
that forty seven percent. Jancy plays Snoop Huntley was fine
last week. I don't want to go overboard. I mean
they got through for like a buck fifty okay, JJ
not JJ Watt TJ Watt. They're saying is a long

(23:12):
shot to play this week. That's not great. And DK
Metcalf suspended, things are not looking good for the Steelers.
I'm sure you saw Aaron Rodgers only completed eight passes
to wide receivers, tight end Darnold Washington the big six
to seven dude, broken arm.

Speaker 5 (23:28):
Looks like his season's over.

Speaker 1 (23:29):
Oh yeah, I know this does not.

Speaker 5 (23:31):
We don't have the odds yet.

Speaker 1 (23:33):
I don't know what the over under is. Pittsburgh's only
way to win it would seem to me as seventeen
to fourteen, or you make a defensive play. So Pittsburgh's
rout to win is very limited. Baltimore could win by
scoring points. I think Huntley's a pretty darn good backup.
I watched them beat the Bears this year. I watched
him beat the Packers. I don't know, I trust him.

(23:55):
There are certain backups in this league. Huntley's one of them.
I trust him. He'll make smartness visions. Go back, go
back and look at the Bears game earlier this year.
He's composed, he doesn't he doesn't make big mistakes. He
plays within the system. I trust him in a big
spot to beat Pittsburgh on the road.

Speaker 6 (24:12):
Uh, Mike, Tomlin's going to be like a three and
a half point thereabouts home dog in a very big
raw ross spot, which is what he's done amazing with
over the years. Down what down Metcalf? Nobody believes in us.
You know he's gonna play that card all week. I
mean this is going to be a very close game. Yes, yeah,

(24:34):
what happens if Aaron Rodgers fails here? Huh?

Speaker 1 (24:37):
I remember when.

Speaker 6 (24:38):
They beat Baltimore few weeks ago, Rodgers and Metcalf for
the big story.

Speaker 5 (24:41):
I think it like the third play of the game,
fifty yard bomb to DK. He's not there.

Speaker 1 (24:47):
Yeah, I'm not gonna blame Aaron. I think he's he's
duct taped this offense together all year. The minute DK
Metcalf's not available, Look at the talent. There is nothing there.

Speaker 6 (24:57):
So you're you're not gonna blame Aaron for targeting targeting
m VS against Denzel Ward.

Speaker 5 (25:02):
Three times with twenty five seconds left.

Speaker 1 (25:04):
Well, who else can it? Told to?

Speaker 6 (25:05):
Scottie Miller, j Jalen Warren, Kenneth gag Well, do something.

Speaker 5 (25:09):
Don't target their best quarterback with MVS. I don't know.
I thought Rogers was quite bad. He was clearly ducking
Miles Garrett.

Speaker 6 (25:16):
Anyways, let's move on to Raiders, Giants and the toilet
Bowl yesterday.

Speaker 5 (25:20):
This was a terrible game.

Speaker 6 (25:22):
I was the idiot who took the Raiders, and then
hours later Max Crosby is basically ruled out. And then
Max Crosby shows video himself playing basketball at his outs
as an f you.

Speaker 1 (25:32):
To the Raider.

Speaker 6 (25:32):
I mean, this franchise is a disaster. And the Giant,
you could argue they were in line to get the
number one pick last year, screwed it up one missed
out on cam Ward. Now they're in the number one
pick this year. Beat the Raiders. They're not gonna get Mendoza.

Speaker 5 (25:48):
I don't know, Colin. We got the draft order here on.

Speaker 1 (25:50):
The screen for you.

Speaker 5 (25:51):
My Jets climbing.

Speaker 6 (25:52):
Back into the next at three, Raiders will clearly go quarterback.

Speaker 1 (25:59):
If I was. If I was the Raiders, I'd get Mendoza.
If I was the Giants, there's a couple of there's
a couple of good linebackers. There's also a linebacker A
two stop it. You just go get the best player.
The Jets, I'd go if he's there. Usually yeah, if
he's there, would you say they're useless. Tennessee's got multiple needs.

(26:24):
Arizona's a mess.

Speaker 5 (26:25):
Arizona is going to have a new coach.

Speaker 1 (26:27):
That's is Cleveland gonna stay with Shador Sanders.

Speaker 5 (26:30):
I mean, he's going to get a look.

Speaker 6 (26:32):
But there isn't a quarterback you'd take, because the Jets
will take whoever is the next best. I would not
be surprised if the Browns kept Stefanski went after Malik Willis.
He's going to be the best free agent.

Speaker 1 (26:42):
Quarterback, right, Yeah, but you're you're paying to Shaun Watson. Still,
you gotta get you gotta go hit a quarterback in
the draft. That's the thing about Shadeur. You can have
a decent roster with Shadur because you're not paying him anything.

Speaker 5 (26:55):
By the way, did you see the Chador interception yesterday?

Speaker 1 (26:57):
I was always bad. He just shucks it.

Speaker 6 (27:00):
Literally, remember that game five hundred, we just call throw
the ball high in the air and call out a number.

Speaker 5 (27:05):
I was like, that's like a throw in the backyard.

Speaker 1 (27:07):
It was, He's got to get Schador's got to get
out of the running backwards thing, which, by the way,
mostly Caleb Williams has done a great job on that
but I'll tell you. I'll tell you a story that
nobody talks about. Here we go, Tyler Shuck. Yeah, I
can't wait for this. We're not doing it now, but
go ahead, go ahead. Looks like the Saintstny the quarterback.

Speaker 6 (27:27):
Okay, I gotta just stay calm because I keep getting
these people on social media. Oh you don't believe in
shuck these our franchise quarterback. I mean, we're crowning guys
way too early. By the way, Jackson Dart, where are
we eight franchise quarterback?

Speaker 1 (27:42):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (27:44):
Oh dear, Okay, final story.

Speaker 6 (27:46):
Calm, let's go to Oh my goodness, we've forgotten all
about your boy. Baker Mayfield and Tampa. They're cratering. Lost
seven of eight, including a fourth straight. This is an
easy dub. Dolphins beat him. I mean, I don't know
what the hell happened to the Bucks Colin offense stinks
all of a sudden. The defense can't stop anybody. Baker
Mayfield two picks and a fumble. He was quite bad.

(28:07):
Here's Baker on Week eighteen where they can save the
season and get in the playoffs.

Speaker 7 (28:12):
Offensively, it comes back to execution. You know, we obviously
gave ourselves a fighting chance right there. But yeah, didn't
do enough, and yeah, those turnovers obviously crushed us. So
I got to come back. And here's the thing. We're
still have a chance next week. We've been blessed with
a chance next week, and guys need to handle it

(28:33):
the right way.

Speaker 6 (28:34):
So Colin Reilquick, did you see in the video one
sleeve off his throwing arm, the other had some sort
of wrap. I don't know something was going on there.
I'm just telling you he's hurt, because remember he's a
tough guy. He doesn't like to admit it, and that's
what took him down in Cleveland. See the video there,
there's something going on with it. I don't know if
he's just it's ice or treatment, but something's wrong with

(28:55):
Baker Mayfield.

Speaker 5 (28:55):
He has been so bad for two months now.

Speaker 1 (28:58):
Yeah, I mean, yeah, it's not been cooked.

Speaker 6 (29:04):
Look early in the season, he was on fire. This
happened in Cleveland. Well they got to the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (29:08):
Bug fans are like, well, our offensive line again, the
Chargers are eleven and five with a worse offensive line.
Everybody's all lines banged out. It's the toughest position to
play in the league. So it's not just that he's
had a rough season. They have to they have a
good GM. They got to hit in some draft picks.
You know they're gonna have big conversations on what to

(29:30):
do with coach too. I don't know what they're gonna do.
I mean, there are they played very well early in
the season. Listen, the NFL average is seven new coaches
a year. So you know, you start looking at the
Raiders and Pete Carroll you could see that getting flushed out.
The Jets and Aaron Glenn, you could see that getting
flushed out, Like the Raiders don't do anything well. Chip

(29:52):
Kelly didn't get along with people on the staff, Like
you could see that thing going sideways fast and for
Pete Carroll and Vegas. So Colin, I.

Speaker 5 (30:01):
Forget who posted this online yesterday? Are you ready for
this number?

Speaker 6 (30:05):
Heading into yesterday's Bucks Dolphins matchup? Todd Bowles record in
Tampa thirty four and thirty two. Yeah, Mike McDaniels in
Miami thirty four and thirty two. So now Mike McDaniel
has a better record than Bowles. Yet everybody just wants
to run off McDaniel. All the narratives about the Dolphins
and their softness. Well, Todd Bowles, same record, and he's

(30:26):
got a franchise guy in Baker Mayfield. You claim, Yeah,
I mean it's it's it's what Mike made to a
pro bowler. Yeah, you know, like like and Mike's an
offensive coach. I tend to with offensive like Pete Carroll's
an old defensive coach. If you blew him out, I'd

(30:48):
get it. Aaron Glenn is a middle aged defensive coach
not working.

Speaker 1 (30:52):
I could move on. I supported Matt Nagy in Chicago
when nobody would. In my take is he's on Trubisky
to the playoffs. He's on the right side of the ball.
Matt Eberfleus in Chicago, I was like, get rid of him.
So like Mike McDaniel, probably loses his job, but he's
on the right side he made to a pro bowler.

(31:13):
Go look around, Go watch the game last night Bears
and Niners. Ben Johnson, Kyle Shanahan. You think you're going
to get that game with two defensive head coaches like
you're seeing this, these offensive, brilliant offensive coaches. They're different.
They're just different.

Speaker 5 (31:27):
So just bulls. Is he in jeopardy?

Speaker 1 (31:29):
If you think it. I don't know. I don't know
if he should be. I'd have to go examine all
of it. I didn't. I am not paying attention. I've
always thought he was pretty capable. I think he's a
really smart defensive guy. I'd have to look at everything.

Speaker 6 (31:43):
And he did lose Canalis his OC and then Liam
Cohen is OC.

Speaker 1 (31:47):
Yeah, that's the downside of being a defensive coach. If
you do get a great OC, a year or two later,
they leave and then you have to reinvent yourself and
how many great ocs can you hire in succession. He
nailed two to two, so you could say, what Todd
Bowles to defend him? Okay, he got two right and
they were a playoff team. He missed on this one.
Do you give him another chance with another OC and

(32:10):
let Baker Mayfield have a say in the selection. I
think you could make an argument if you were the
agent or defender of Todd Bowles.

Speaker 5 (32:16):
A spot on by you. That's a great point.

Speaker 6 (32:18):
And I want everybody to listen when these NFL insiders
come on and they start talking about head coaching candidates, Colin,
all they mentioned.

Speaker 5 (32:25):
Is defensive coaches.

Speaker 1 (32:26):
That's it.

Speaker 6 (32:27):
Jesse mentor Brian Flores. Just listen closely. That's all agents
pushing their guy to get a head coaching job, because
everybody knows what the right path is. Your past hire
an offensive guy.

Speaker 1 (32:39):
We've been on this for like five years. Go look
at the end of the season, your final six and
eight coaches. It said final four, your super bowls. Jmckle
the news, Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping
back the herd line News. And my thinke is I'm
not into fire the coach, but when you get into
certain situations like they can't get their personal life in order.

(33:00):
We saw that at Michigan, Like that's just one of
those where there's egregious personal mistakes. Nobody's perfect. People make mistakes,
but there are certain times that gets in the way.
The other thing I've always said about coaches, I've said
this for twenty years. Even if you've got a losing record,
are you taking care of your side of the ball.
A lot of you guys bang on Lincoln Riley, and

(33:22):
my take is us He's offense is amazing. You don't
have to like his recruiting all the time, but the offense.
He's an offensive coach. So when Demiko Ryans. I think
was it last year was struggling. People were banging on
Demko Ryans, and I'm like, the Texans defense is unbelievable.
I'm good with that if you can get your side right.

(33:42):
I know, you know football. That's why with the Jets,
you're like, they don't have an interception this year, and
you're a defensive guy. That would worry me. Or Nathaniel
Hackett was an offensive guy in Denver and he couldn't
do the clock. Remember the first game he goes back
to Seattle with Russell Wilson and they butcher the clock.
I'm like, you're an offensive guy. You got to be

(34:04):
able to figure that out. In Chicago, it's the Hurt.

Speaker 4 (34:10):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
at noon Easter not a em Pacific.

Speaker 6 (34:15):
Tonight on FS one, it's a college hoops tripleheader, starting
with number nine Michigan State hosting Cornell. Then it's Big
Ten Women's hoops as Sila Swords and sixth rank Michigan
take on Katie Faiso in Oregon.

Speaker 5 (34:31):
Then out west it's Utah.

Speaker 6 (34:32):
Ver's Washington and all tips off at seven pm Eastern,
only on FS one.

Speaker 1 (34:38):
All right, I I one of the things Sometimes a
parent will come up to me if I have to
speak to a college class or a high school class,
what's the best advice you could give much to my
son or daughter. And my best advice is, there's no
one piece of advice. Everybody in the internet's got all
the advice I have, opinions, advice, there's no one way
in life. Don't get your head down, keep working. Early

(35:00):
failure doesn't mean anything. You're in your twenties. There is
no one piece of advice for any career. Go look
at the NFC West quarterbacks this year, three different teams.
LA has a former number one pick, old Matt Stafford.
They're crushing. San Francisco has the last pick, undersized, albeit
talented brock Purty. And Seattle's got a reclamation project in

(35:23):
Sam Darnold, who, by the way, if you look at
the numbers the last several years, he's number one in wins,
number two in big plays, number three in passing touchdowns.
Yesterday seven of eight on third down he was outstanding.
The bottom line is there's no one piece of advice.

(35:44):
There's a million different ways to be successful, especially at quarterback.
In the NFL. Maybe Malik Willis is your answer. I mean,
the world gave up on Sam Darnald. Now he's had
back to back thirteen win seasons. You know who else
has done that? Brady Farv, Manning Rogers, and Sam Darnold.

(36:05):
There is no one way, There's no linear path for
an actor, a singer, a quarterback, great athletes, and yesterday
Sam was great on third down even within a game.
Sam yesterday excellent on third down. That was his thing.
Here's his coach.

Speaker 8 (36:26):
I know it wasn't Sam's like best game of all time,
and the stats reflect that. But like there's some big
time third down throws with pressure in his face. You know,
we threw the jet one to Jack's you know that
route to Cooper. I mean, those are some big time
throws that, you know, in the face of pressure, that
we need to be able to make, and they're not
easy to make.

Speaker 6 (36:46):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (36:46):
I want to talk to Sanor Sanders because we talked
earlier about the Browns beating the Steelers. We concentrated on
the Steelers. What would I do if I ran the Steelers?
I love their GM Andrew Berry, I love their coach,
Kevin Stefanski. I'm gonna throw the US out. You still
have that Deshaun Watson caphit. I would stay with Shador Sanders.
If Dante Moore does not come out, I would stay

(37:09):
with Shador Sanders. You're not going to be a top
ten team. He needs an entire offseason being coached by
Stefanski as the number one quarterback. This year, he went
into camp as a scout team guy. I would stay
with Shador. Do I think Schador is ever going to
have great traits? No, he's not that big, he doesn't
have a great arm. He's athletic, not that athletic, but

(37:31):
you know what, he's a big play guy. He has
some really awful picks.

Speaker 8 (37:36):
So what.

Speaker 1 (37:38):
Perty Stafford, Darnold, Andrew Locke. I'm not crushing you for that.
They don't have a very good offensive line. They need
to This is not a great quarterback class in Cleveland.
Needs some draft capital, right, rebuild your own line. Schador
Sanders a fifth round pick is inexpensive. Do I think

(37:59):
he's great?

Speaker 6 (38:00):
No?

Speaker 1 (38:01):
But next year, if Dante more doesn't come out, you
start looking at the twenty twenty seven quarterback draft class.
Pre tasty, pre interesting guys that are could come out
this year like a Ty Simpson or a Dante More.
If they stay in, they get another thirteen fourteen starts.
So about every third year you get one of these

(38:22):
first round quarterback classes with like four or five guys
who can play. This year's not one of them. So
why reach on a quarterback. If you're Cleveland, go there's
three great offensive tackles in this class. Go get one
of them, two from Utah. Go get an offensive tackle
to support Shadara Sanders your second, third, fourth pick. Rebuild

(38:42):
the offensive line, Go get another wide receiver. Give Shadoor
Sanders a chance. This offense right now. You don't really
give them a chance. You didn't. I mean, what quarterback
has a chance. You're just not good enough. So again,
I don't need you to be Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.
If it's I need a quarterback, I've got a ridiculous

(39:04):
I mean, Sean Payton got lucky. He needed a quarterback
in Boonis, Drake May, Pennix McCarthy, Caleb, Jayden Daniels. The
year that he needed a quarterback, it was a great
quarterback class in Denver. He got lucky. You know, the
year the Patriots needed a quarterback. They got lucky. They
were a bad team lottery pick level, and Drake May

(39:26):
was there. But some years, like Cleveland, they're not going
to get Mendoza. So just give Shador the reins, build
the offense around him, attack the wide receiver position, give
Shador a fighting chance next year. And let's say he
wins seven games and goes seven and ten. You're probably
draft in nine in a draft with four to five quarterbacks,

(39:50):
and you can get one without having to give up
draft capital. But this idea was that, well, is he good?

Speaker 5 (39:55):
Is he not?

Speaker 1 (39:55):
There's a lot of analytics that say Chadeur isn't very good.
There's also analytics that say Jackson Dart's not great. But
the Giants are going to give now that they're the
number two pick, they're going to give Jackson Dart another year.
They're going to give him stuff to work with. So
I think there's a real argument that, I mean, just
look at how much these young quarterbacks have proved year

(40:20):
to year. Look at Drake May last year to this year.
He's the top three four quarterback in the league this year.
Last year he had moments where he looked really good.
He didn't even have a lot of great games. He
had a lot of great moments. So I think I'd
stick with Shador And if I was Kevin Stefanski, I
would go to the owner and say, you're wearing this

(40:40):
mess because of you. You're the one that guaranteed the
Deshaun Watson deal, so let me do it my way.
Do I think you're going to be a playoff team
with theer, No, but give the get a shot. I mean,
I still contend with a good infrastructure. I mean, yesterday
he beats Aaron Rodgers, Aaron had I mean that Pittsburgh roster.

(41:03):
That Pittsburgh roster is better than that Cleveland roster and
should have had a really bad pick. He also had
a couple of nice rows. So there you go. All right,
Diana Russini shows up in our last hour. Now, yeah,
football starts getting real serious. San Francisco and Seattle next Saturday.

(41:26):
That is one for the ages. I think I'm gonna
lean Hawks on that one third

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
