he's getting ready for the season, and he got injured.
So now I don't think teams are gonna be like whoa, whoa,
whoa settled down on this playing of the basketball in
the off season if you're an NBA player, I don't

you know, how it goes where they're like, ohh gosh,
like maybe maybe not pro ams. Maybe you know, running

it's gonna come to that, but it just made me
think of with teams consider that going forward. I don't.

like this was a freak injury. UM doesn't vode well

So Jimmy G's interesting. Uh for a lot of reasons.
One is because, um, you know you look at team
fits right and and for some reason, there's this conception
that there's idea that all these bad teams want Jimmy Garoppolo.

Why like the favorites to land him and trade are
all the bad teams right? See at all? And and
the Texans and now Cleveland, um without Watson, and like,
why would they want to pay twenty four million dollars
to have Jimmy Garoppolo and win six games? Those teams
want to be bad. It's only the Browns. Only the

Browns make sense because I agree with you know, they
don't make any sense. What okay? What for what you're
already paying the Shawn Watson obviously you know, not very
much money this year, but you have your onlook for
some Baker Mayfield money. What's the point of Jimmy Garoppolo
this season for you guys? Like, just just just played Jr.

better than Jacoby Brissette. I don't think he's a difference maker.
I think he gets far too much love. I think
he's the anti Matthew Stafford in Detroit, where Stafford mostly
because of the lack of talent around him, he was vilified,

and yet somehow Jimmy G has put on the pedestal
by many people because of the talent around him, Like
look at his starting record. So I don't think Jimmy
G's a difference maker. I don't. I don't. I don't
think people look at him. I think people are shocked
to see his his record is really good. Actually, oh
they're they're just like Jimmy geez a winner. This guy,
he's got the iron will It's like, bro, are you serious? Right? Now,

here's here's what I think, And this is what I
think that, Um, where Jimmy Garoppo fits in the NFL
this season. I think that if our him, this is
where I would want to fit is as a you
get released by the team, and you might not. But
the problem with not releasing Jimmy Garoppolo is you're gonna
always have that in the back year head every time
Trey Lance plays poorly, right, is that, Oh, Jimmy Garoppols

on the roster. Jimmy Garoppos on the roster. And you're right,
the last two years he's been healthy. They made the
Super Bowl and the NC Championship game right in the
ninety one, Um, so they're there have and again that's
not even you know Jimmy Garoppolo where they won thirteen
ten against the Packers, right, It's not like he lit
up the world of that game. I think he completed
six passes. Then to the first time first time they

played the Packers, you know Dallas first, right, and he
misses Brandon and I you y open to to basically
see the game, right, So, but you can't have him
on the roster because you can't be tempted to go
back to him with tray Land struggles because if you
do that, you're meaning that tray Land is not your guy,
and you can't. You need to give him all the
reps this season, win or lose, bad play, good play.

He's all the reps this year. No, I'm with you
on that. You gotta move on. But Kyle Shanahan, the
head coach, saying, hey, I could see any scenario with
Jimmy g They're trying, they're trying to say, yeah, this
guy could be on a ROS. It's like he's not
going to be there. So if I were Jimmy Garoppolo,
wouldn't you rather be the backup on the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers or the Buffalo Bills out of the Cheesewood Sign

And they don't don't think they feel like they need him.
Um or the Rams who have your Stafford's elbow concerned, right,
um or the Packers like to me, his value is
being the ten million dollar backup on a winning team.
And if you lose Tom Brady for a month and
you lose Josh Allen for a bit of time, are
you lose uh, you know, Aaron Rodgers, are you lose

you know someone else from from a winning team? Your
backup is Jimmy Garoppolo. Like, that's I think where his
place is this season. And I think that you know
that that feels better to me than being on a
stinky team for a season and making the team win
six games have two like like Seattle like they want
to stick, I think, which is wild. A lot of
Pete Carroll do a rebuild seems like not the best decision,

but um, I you know, I just I think that
that's where his role is this season, and he has
to be cut for that to happen. Yeah, you might
be right, because I mean, look at it's August right now,
and uh, I don't know how long he's gonna stay
on that Niners roster. They could keep him on the
roster all the way up until the day before their
first game. They could keep him on the on the

roster until September before they released him, and the days
taken away right now, his salary becomes guaranteed it's the
day before because it's like you gotta cut the roster
down on August. But they could keep him there all
the way until September ten, the day before their Week

one game against the Bears. They could do that and
not be on the hook for the twenty four mill.
So the question becomes like, if the Niners can't find
a trade partner, how long do they keep this guy? Yeah,
it actually might be a little bit earlier than the
tenth when you have to when the starry has become
guaranteed for veterans. I always thought it was earlier. I
thought it was like the when if you're on the
roster Wednesday of Week one nonetheless, but no matter, yes,

you're exactly like that week. They could cut up up
to that point and they won't have to pay him.
Um yeah, I don't know. I don't know when they're
gonna do this. I would imagine, Yeah, I think they're
waiting to see if there's any injuries, right, like you

the last batch of preseason games, because this starts tonight
Chiefs Packers and goes through the weekend. Um man, it is.

It's also one thing that the preseason that's so different
now is they stacker these games. They used to play
them all like on one night and a week and
they were all at seven o'clock. Eas started now that
day games. But I mean tonight you have Chiefs Packers.
You're not gonna get Patrick Mahomes, I would imagine, I don't.
I think I saw that the chief Stars are not playing.
You're definitely not getting Aaron Rodgers. You're probably not getting

Jordan's love maybe for a little bit. The Chiefs didn't
even play Chad Heny last week. I don't know if
he's gonna play this week. They played the third string quarterback.
I mean, I'll watch it because I'm I'm weirdo like
people are watching third sturting has played each other. It's

can't get enough of it. I'm in I'm watching all

holding onto Jimmy G past this last week of preseason games.
You never know. I understand they don't want to just
get rid of the guy when they could get something

holding this guy on your roster for a fourth or

do right by Jimmy G. Probably not even that who

who Who's your Who's your football team? A Dolphins? Dolphins
quarterback of all? I couldn't imagine rooting for a team
that had the most accurate quarterback of vols. I must

that you can't find a way to use your franchise

he's looked at, is it just like comparing him even

I think Derek Carr actually is a little underrated the
way he played very well last season, but he's been
overshadowed obviously in this division alone by Mahomes Herburn and
Russell Wilson, And so I think that no, there's no

extra pressure on him this year. There might be pressure
on Josh McDaniels to kind of, um, you know, get
you kind of make up for what he did in Denver, right,
And there's a lot of I think, like just angst
to see him as a head coach again. Um, but
there's no there's no pressure on car this year to
be Tom Brady or to be compared to Tom Brady. Okay,
we gotta get to this. Which NFL QB is under

the most pressure this season. Jeff and I will compare notes.

the Dallas Cowboys and starting left tackle Tyrand Smith suffering
a torn left hamstring and practice injuries expected costs him

several months of the seasons. An eight time pro bowler
and consider one of the top offensive tackles in the game.
Since then, NY Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow returned to full
particip asian in team practices for the first time since
his appen decked to me in July. Remains of play
in the Bengals preseason finale Saturday against the Rams, but
he is going to play in joint practices against the
Rams later this week. In baseball games, and note, we

had the Dodgers beating the Brewers twelve to six. L

seven from Milwaukee. There's still a game and half out
of the final wild cards spot in the nationally bind.

that are good, like I don't look the doctors want
to sit out like a whole week way. Yeah, I

the old school NFL where there used to be twelve
total playoff teams, so before we went to seven in
each conference. It's the same format where the top two
get the bye week in the NFL. The same thing

in baseball this year. But yeah, you're right, week without
playing players, you know, they're obviously there their arms are
gonna be fresh, But how about hitting right in a
week and timing rhythms. Still, they do some simulated games
and whatnot in the meantime. You know, obviously for pitching,
that's great. You get everyone loosen, you know, everyone rest up,

and you have your full rotation ready to go. Um.
But yeah, I mean I you know, I hate to
dodge yourself. It hurts that I'm good for that. Good. Okay.
So if we circle back to if Derek Carr isn't
number one on him the list which NFL quarterback is
under the most pressure this season? Who would you put
at the top of your list. There's two. There's two

that I think tie for this, and it's Jalen Hurts
and into a Um. Okay. Now, the difference is Jalen
Hurts was drafted by this current coaching staff, where to
it was not. So there is a little bit of
an attachment to making sure that that Jalen Hurts is
successful because Hallie Roseman and Nick Sirianni want him to

be good. Right. No, No, Nick Serrani did not draft him,
but Hallie Roseman did. Um. And then in Miami they
have a brand new general manager and head coach. So
I don't was Chris career around when they drafted to uh,
I think he was just fired the okay, then he
drafted two of that Okay, pretty much the same thing

as the Eagles and UM, so maybe there's a little
bit more of an investment in both those guys from
you know, obviously coaching staff's not right investment there. Um,
but you've surrounded at least Jalen Hurts with a lot
of talent, right, you traded for a wide receiver, You
good offensive defensive lines. You know, you're obviously had success
the last year's a playoff team your division. I mean,

you should probably the favorite now with the Toronto Smith
injury doing your division. And you look at the Dolphins
and what they've done too to add to to you know,
to to of the left left tackle. Um, got another
wide receiver. Um, it's a quarterback friendly offense at least
as designed you know, on paper, and there needs to
be improvement because the Dolphins and they lost the first

round draft pick for the tampering thing, but there's still
in a position with all the draft picks they had
to get themselves another quarterback. So are the Eagles I
mean that part of it is that this is a
very quarterback friend. I just saw a tweet from Jim
Naggy Senior, who's head of the Senior Bowl, who said,
you know, they have like a watch list heading into
the season for how many quarterbacks might make the Senior Bowl.
He's an eight and twenty two right now is on
the watch list. Last year they were like, it's a

huge year for quarter backs. Were last year it wasn't
right even though there were guys drafted, but they were
just drafted, you know, third round basically. Well that's a
good point too, because you might not have to pull
Vault into the top five or ten to get one
of those guys. You could be at the end of
the first round and get a quality guy. So that's
why I think that there's pressure on those guys to
be really good this season. Um. Now, again, both general managers,

I thought Chris ger got fired, but so apologize for
that one. Um So there's a little bit. There's a
little bit of the GMS wanting those guys to succeed. Right,
There's gonna be some of that. So maybe that keeps
those guys they're a little bit longer. But from the
coaching staff perspective. Again, they didn't draft these players. Um,
and that does matter, I think, because you obviously trying
(26:41):
to draft players that fit what you want to do.
But the best coaches, of course find ways to make
it work anyways, and so I do. But again, if
two comes out and play poor this year with a
revamped offensive line with Tyreek Yell and Jalen Waddle, there's
gonna be a little bit of of like, are you
sure he's the guy here? So big year for those guys.
I also think it's weirdly an important year for for
(27:04):
Aaron Rodgers because how many years are gonna keep winning
all these games and not make any noise in the playoffs.
That's becoming his legacy and I and I don't think
he cares, and I don't think that it changes are
from the Fox Sports. I don't think it changes our
opinion on him. But I think if he wins another championship,
it just elevates him even further. Right, Like he's first
(27:26):
Bell Hall of Famer, but winning another championship puts him
in a different different light. Um, it would do a lot. Also,
he probably doesn't care about this, but it do a lot.
If he goes out there and balls out without the
Vonte Adams, that's a big deal. I think he'll be
fine without Adams. I am not one of these guys
who thinks that Patrick Mahomes Aaron Rodgers losing one wide
(27:47):
receiver makes them all of a sudden be a bunch
of slaw meals like they're gonna be fine, Like they're
gonna be fine at quarterback. Like it's it's not a problem.
There's no way their numbers are just gonna drop significantly.
But I mean, you're using your sports car, you're high
end sports cause that's a big deal. Well, I think
I was gonna slip a little bit. But Pat Mahomes,
though they added a bunch of talent back, the Packers
(28:09):
did not do the same thing. Yeah, so I can
make an argument that Chiefs as a as a whole
in the wide receiver room are better this season, which
they are. They still Travis Kelsey Um fortunately the backup Tendant,
I guess they're blocking Tendant got hurt. But you know,
Noah Grady had a good preseason so far. Uh fort
Suns score a bunch of touchdowns. The Packers have more
(28:30):
to more issues offensive line injuries and just don't have
the weapons the Chiefs have, but they're gonna This offense
is still gonna score a bunch of points. They're gonna
be fine. But I think there's I think there's pressure
on Rogers just kind of image wise, like how many
games are gonna win in the regular seasons? Thirty nine
the last three years. Yeah, it's get to that stage. Yeah,
I'm gonna go in a different direction. Most pressure in
(28:51):
the NFL is a quarterback. I'm gonna go with Trey Lance.
And my reasoning is the Niners quarterback. Think of the
price tag, how much they had to give to get
him to get up there in the number three overall pick.
They're giving up multiple first round draft picks. The comparisons
to Jimmy G right, Like, I don't think it's fair.
Jimmy G was was good, but I thought it was
(29:13):
more so along for the ride than the reason for
all of this team's success. But in any event, it's
gonna be compared to Jimmy g he was thirty one
and fourteen as a starter. Why they even get rid
of Jimmy G If Trey Lance struggles, that's gonna be
the deal. And then also Trey Lance played at the
FCS level, he didn't play a lot, and now he
(29:33):
takes over for a team that just made it to
the NFC title game and the expectations are sky high.
So I think that's a lot of pressure on him. Now.
It's not like Jalen and Tuah, where of Jalen and
Tah underperformed, they're gone. Those teams are going in a
different direction. That's not the same thing with Trey Lance.
But I would argue that Trey Lance is under a
(29:54):
lot more scrutiny, and as a first year starting quarterback,
he doesn't have those starts under his belt, and the
expect a SS for that team is way higher than
the expectations for the Dolphins and Eagles. Um doesn't the
expectations or like kind of our perceived expectation of the
player matter a lot here, Like I'm not as high
on tray Lands as others were, and so if he
(30:15):
plays poorly, it kind of confirms how I feel about him,
I think, And the same with two. I wasn't as
it wasn't. It wasn't that wasn't high on to a
I just look at kind of the history of Alabama
quarterbacks and I was just like you know, smaller undersize
has been heard a bunch um same kind of hurts honestly, So,
like I just my explanations aren't very high for tray Land.
(30:37):
So he plays poorly, it kind of fits with what
I already perceived him to be, where if he plays
really well obviously, so that isn't the pressure all about
how we perceived him to be rather than just overall okay,
there's pressure on him? Or is that is that part
of this is GONI? I hear you. Yeah, it makes sense,
but I would argue a lot of people see it
(30:57):
differently than the dude pressure on Kyle Shanahan. There's a
lot of just Trey Lance, Oh this guy, you heard
it last season. When Trey Lance takes over, it will
unlock Kyle Shanahan's full play book. And it's like that,
as a rookie, what are we talking about? But there
are still a lot of people singing his praises. So
I'm more like you with how I think a Trey lancey,
(31:18):
but I don't think we're in the majority on that.
And and there's also, um, you know, there's pressure on
it to work because as you mentioned, all the assets
that you traded. But you know, you have to figure
out what the quarterback on a rookie contract pretty quickly.
If it's if he's a young guy or not right,
you should figure that out like a S A P.
I mean, I think outside of Tom Brady, who's the
(31:41):
last quarterback to win a Super Bowl that wasn't on
the rookie contract? I guess Matt Stafford. I mean veterans
like Stafford and Brady. I mean, like it doesn't happen
very often. So you know, you have a chance right
now at the Niners to build this thing in the
next couple of years with you know, Trent Williams still
his you know, his peak, your defensive line still playing
the way they are um and you gotta get this.
(32:02):
You gotta get this done. And so I think there
is pressure on the entire organization to make this work
and reputation and there and the reputation of John Lynch
call Shanahan, who draft. I think it's the comparison thing.
I think if Trey Lance Falters put it this way,
if to A stumbles, there isn't why did you get
rid of the last guy to go with to one.
It's the same thing with Jalen Hurts. That will be
(32:24):
the case with Trey Lance, fair or not. You know,
that's what people are gonna say, would be the same
with two of them. I mean, why didn't the draft
just a Herbert? Right, That's the that would be that's
always tied together to that. I still have nightmares about that.
That's you thinking about. You know, I don't do a
lot of quarterback evaluations. It's not my job really. Yeah,
and so obviously, but you know, as a as an
organ guy, watched every snap ad just at Herbert. Even
(32:45):
now I see highlights it from college and I'm like,
we people just missed the boat on him, Like they
just chose to to look at like weird things like
oh he never he's never left Eugene before. Um, you know,
you know I gotta say something about that. Let's continue

wanted to throw this at you. So I saw this
where this new media deal for the Big Ten conference
with CBS, Fox NBC. They left framework within this seven
(34:36):
year deal if one specific team joins the conference, and
that would be your Notre Dame fighting Irish Irish. No
I thought there are everybody's Notre Dame fighting Irish. That's
that's untrue. So very very quick correction on that, because
I've seen that reported and um, they cannot add other
(34:57):
teams as framework because they're in other conferences. So you
can't say, like you have Oregon joins, this is how
much will add to the deal because Oregan is not
part of the Big Ten conference and they're probably Pack
twelve right now, so you can't No name is they're independent.
You're allowed to add them to the contract. You can't
do that for other school So that's something no one's
really reported. I've seen a couple of people that know
the kind of they're they're working to that report that.
(35:18):
But the most important part is there's escalators in the
deal if other teams join, doesn't have to be just
Notre Dame, just anyone who joins. We can talk again
about raising that contract. And now that that's in place,
the Big Ten can explore Now other editions like that
we're gonna do you see a USC and then add
four pack twelve. They want to do this first have
(35:41):
their name is the option to join for the next
couple of years, right, because this deal is actually not
happening for two more years. Right, there's two more years
before you still in USC joined the conference, right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
So it's like over a seven billion dollar deal over
seven years. And you're right, I don't think this is
just duck hatred. I think it's legitimate point here where
it sounds fancier than it might be that Notre Dame
(36:04):
specifically is mentioned. They're supposed to negotiating good faith if
there are other schools not named Notre Dame that are
added to the big town. So there's so many ideas
here right with this. So um, look, if you depends
if you like the sport as a regional support or
national sport, depends how you feel about all this, right
because as a regional sport, like I'm a pactwell of
guy at work Pacte Radio. I went to Oregon. My
(36:26):
parents are Bruno lums like group in Los Angeles. I
hate it, right. I like my conference, I like my teams.
I like the traditional nature of college sports. But nationally
we're gonna get now USC Michigan, US, Michigan State, US
Ohio State, like we're gonna get good football games. Like
nationally speaking, this provides a better a better product regionally obviously,
(36:47):
like my job at Pactwell Radio might not be there
in two years because it might be a PAC Conference
not not great, right, I like my I like my job,
you know, on a Big Ten radio. But but so
so there's that now, Um, I understand the idea of
wanting to expand more through the Big Ten Conference, right
(37:08):
because there's gonna be eventually two major conferences, and there
are really you can argue that already are now to
write the SEC and the Big Tent. And if the
Big Ten is able to snag up the best West
Coast properties, they're gonna have a whole West Coast arm
of the Big Tent, right, Like you can own the
West coast the Midwest now and you have New York
and d C. Technically with Rutgers in Maryland, I mean
(37:29):
they countlo as their markets. But that's where it's headed.
Like they're just building more and more. So it comes
down to this. It's a blend in my mind. Is
it better or worse for college football? There are some
good things about it's not all bad. There's some bad
things about it. It's not all good. It's a blend
of both. So which do you think it is more of?
Has it been better or worse with all this realignment
(37:51):
in college football? Again, there's not there's not one answer
because again, if you view this regionally, this is not
very fun. But which percentage does it favor more? Better
or worse? Which is it more of? Probably when this
is all said and done, Probably, I don't know. It's
(38:12):
I think you have to add then you name him.
You like, listen to this right and the big time
talk about paying players. So maybe in the end it's
a positive if you're paying the players more money. Um,
I think right now it's it's just all up in
the air. Time. I wish I'd give you a better answer, man,
because it's there's it's both negative and positive. It's kind
of in the middle of at the moment, it's up
in the air, it's both, right. I just want to
know what are we looking at here? Let's define the relationship, right, like,

would imagine that the answer is know to let them
play because they gets them ready for the season. Again, like,

how often are players getting injured in these environments? Very rarely?
And are you gonna change everything you do because chet
Holmegrin can't jump up and down without breaking his foot.
But I just don't think that that's something that you know,
you feel like you have to change right away. Yeah, well,
I think I'm with you on this. In basketball, it's

you gotta get ready for the season. There was just
a workout video with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, who
are Bood brothers yet again, right back with the Brooklyn Nets,
but the running full court, Kyrie Irving is being defended
by Trey Young. You're getting ready for the season. Sometimes
this stuff happens. Clay Thompson, remember when he had his
achilles injury. This is coming off the torn a c
(02:14):
L the same sort of thing. Right, he's playing basketball,
he's getting ready for the season, and he got injured.
So now I don't think teams are gonna be like whoa, whoa,
whoa settled down on this playing of the basketball in
the off season if you're an NBA player, I don't
think that's gonna happen, but you know, you might see teams,
you know, how it goes where they're like, ohh gosh,
like maybe maybe not pro ams. Maybe you know, running
(02:36):
full court is a different deal than I don't think
it's gonna come to that, but it just made me
think of with teams consider that going forward. I don't.
I don't think so. I don't either. You know, again,
like this was a freak injury. UM doesn't vode well
for I don't know his future. I Meaney got hurt
just like jumping up and down. I don't. I mean,

it's I was kind of questioning his toughness, his physical toughness, um,
you know, heading into the draft, and especially if you're
watching him in um in um who they play in
the who they got, who they get bullied by in
the in the gosh, what was Houston? It might have
been Houston. I have to go back and chang. And

I was just like, I'm like, oh, like think so,
you know, Kevin Durant is kind of his body comp
a little bit right now. It's not as kind of lanky,
but just like you know, a d eighty five pounds.
But Durant was so smooth, and I means it was
is and so quickly. He never got like touched Chack
home Boys in the middle of the paint. He's getting

banged around a little bit, like you know, he out.
It was never Durant's game because he was playing on
the perimeter, and so I just I worry about his
size and NBA and he gets hurt right off the
bat on a simple defense of lebron Um. I think
there's worried to be had. Yeah, it was arc and Saw.

That's a great trivia question. They went down to number
four seated Arkansas. Yeah, right enough, Yeah, yeah, I get it.
I get why you would be Look, he's he's not
even two hundred pounds as a he's an over seven.
Kevin Durant's not either um or he wasn't when he

came out from Texas. But their styles a game are
so different. The effects chat home Gard more than it
would have ever affect Kevin Durant. Yeah, yeah, it's just
I don't think it's gonna change. But it's something that

gonna be teams that and they might not put it

they discourage it. He might not even hear about it.
I could see some teams doing that, but my guess
is much more than not, we'll say, you know, it's
basket bomb man. You you get ready for the season,
you play basketball. They're not gonna forbid that. So now,

so have we been on the show for like an hour?
In six minutes, you outlawed the cut block casual basketball? No,
I just said, they're probably not going to do that,
But you know how you what else are we gonna
What else were we outlaw before the end of the day, Like,
I mean, you'd have a you have a leg to
stand on if I was like, these teams should outlaw
any playing of pro ams, don't chance. Last night there

was a there was a weird baseball injury outlaw throwing.
I mean called me crazy, But a guy diving at
a dude's legs and might accidentally hit him in the
knee while he's playing it, that's dangerous. I think that
should go away. We you know what, we need to
outlaw the overhand throw, Tommy John injuries, throw underhad someone

had Tommy John yea, I think it was. It was
Walker bullet right, Tommy John injury yesterday or recently. I
can't do it only sidewinders from now on? Is that
only only only the Roger's kid from the Giants? Just
those e two miles underhead and they're like shocked at
and she didn't pitch you all this season? Now, I don't.

I don't have a smooth transition with outlawing over here,
Brian No and Jeff Schwartz with you, what else we
outlaw on sports? Let's go through the list we outlaw.
Maybe maybe we should outlaw teams holding players hostage, like
the forty Niners are with Jimmy Garoppolo. I know they
would have reached a trade agreement, but good lord, how

long are they going to hold onto Jimmy g if
they can't find a trade partner. That's a professional transition. Um,
So Jimmy G's interesting. Uh for a lot of reasons.
One is because, um, you know you look at team
fits right and and for some reason, there's this conception
that there's idea that all these bad teams want Jimmy Garoppolo.
(06:55):
Why like the favorites to land him and trade are
all the bad teams right? See at all? And and
the Texans and now Cleveland, um without Watson, and like,
why would they want to pay twenty four million dollars
to have Jimmy Garoppolo and win six games? Those teams
want to be bad. It's only the Browns. Only the
(07:16):
Browns make sense because I agree with you know, they
don't make any sense. What okay? What for what you're
already paying the Shawn Watson obviously you know, not very
much money this year, but you have your onlook for
some Baker Mayfield money. What's the point of Jimmy Garoppolo
this season for you guys? Like, just just just played Jr.
Copy per sets He's on your roster already, and just

get ready for to de Shawn Watson. Like, there's no
this is a wasted season. The only part of the
season that's important is when Deshaun Watson comes back, making
sure he's ready to go. That's your goal this season? Well,
I think that you don't want to get Jimmy G
foro million dollars Okay, fine, And you don't want to
give up a fourth or a fifth round pick whatever
it would take if you're the Browns, because you've given
(08:00):
it up a ton of draft capital to get to
Shaun Watson. I get both of those points. But if
it's just why even think about Jimmy G. Well, he's
better than Jacoby Brissette. I don't think he's a difference maker.
I think he gets far too much love. I think
he's the anti Matthew Stafford in Detroit, where Stafford mostly
because of the lack of talent around him, he was vilified,
(08:20):
and yet somehow Jimmy G has put on the pedestal
by many people because of the talent around him, Like
look at his starting record. So I don't think Jimmy
G's a difference maker. I don't. I don't. I don't
think people look at him. I think people are shocked
to see his his record is really good. Actually, oh
they're they're just like Jimmy geez a winner. This guy,
he's got the iron will It's like, bro, are you serious? Right? Now,
(08:44):
here's here's what I think, And this is what I
think that, Um, where Jimmy Garoppo fits in the NFL
this season. I think that if our him, this is
where I would want to fit is as a you
get released by the team, and you might not. But
the problem with not releasing Jimmy Garoppolo is you're gonna
always have that in the back year head every time
Trey Lance plays poorly, right, is that, Oh, Jimmy Garoppols
(09:05):
on the roster. Jimmy Garoppos on the roster. And you're right,
the last two years he's been healthy. They made the
Super Bowl and the NC Championship game right in the
ninety one, Um, so they're there have and again that's
not even you know Jimmy Garoppolo where they won thirteen
ten against the Packers, right, It's not like he lit
up the world of that game. I think he completed
six passes. Then to the first time first time they
(09:28):
played the Packers, you know Dallas first, right, and he
misses Brandon and I you y open to to basically
see the game, right, So, but you can't have him
on the roster because you can't be tempted to go
back to him with tray Land struggles because if you
do that, you're meaning that tray Land is not your guy,
and you can't. You need to give him all the
reps this season, win or lose, bad play, good play.
(09:49):
He's all the reps this year. No, I'm with you
on that. You gotta move on. But Kyle Shanahan, the
head coach, saying, hey, I could see any scenario with
Jimmy g They're trying, they're trying to say, yeah, this
guy could be on a ROS. It's like he's not
going to be there. So if I were Jimmy Garoppolo,
wouldn't you rather be the backup on the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers or the Buffalo Bills out of the Cheesewood Sign
(10:10):
And they don't don't think they feel like they need him.
Um or the Rams who have your Stafford's elbow concerned, right,
um or the Packers like to me, his value is
being the ten million dollar backup on a winning team.
And if you lose Tom Brady for a month and
you lose Josh Allen for a bit of time, are
you lose uh, you know, Aaron Rodgers, are you lose
(10:32):
you know someone else from from a winning team? Your
backup is Jimmy Garoppolo. Like, that's I think where his
place is this season. And I think that you know
that that feels better to me than being on a
stinky team for a season and making the team win
six games have two like like Seattle like they want
to stick, I think, which is wild. A lot of
Pete Carroll do a rebuild seems like not the best decision,
(10:53):
but um, I you know, I just I think that
that's where his role is this season, and he has
to be cut for that to happen. Yeah, you might
be right, because I mean, look at it's August right now,
and uh, I don't know how long he's gonna stay
on that Niners roster. They could keep him on the
roster all the way up until the day before their
first game. They could keep him on the on the
(11:16):
roster until September before they released him, and the days
taken away right now, his salary becomes guaranteed it's the
day before because it's like you gotta cut the roster
down on August. But they could keep him there all
the way until September ten, the day before their Week
(11:37):
one game against the Bears. They could do that and
not be on the hook for the twenty four mill.
So the question becomes like, if the Niners can't find
a trade partner, how long do they keep this guy? Yeah,
it actually might be a little bit earlier than the
tenth when you have to when the starry has become
guaranteed for veterans. I always thought it was earlier. I
thought it was like the when if you're on the
roster Wednesday of Week one nonetheless, but no matter, yes,
(12:00):
you're exactly like that week. They could cut up up
to that point and they won't have to pay him.
Um yeah, I don't know. I don't know when they're
gonna do this. I would imagine, Yeah, I think they're
waiting to see if there's any injuries, right, like you
know Toron Smith right gets hurt? Right, yeah? Right? Like
the last batch of preseason games, because this starts tonight
Chiefs Packers and goes through the weekend. Um man, it is.
(12:21):
It's also one thing that the preseason that's so different
now is they stacker these games. They used to play
them all like on one night and a week and
they were all at seven o'clock. Eas started now that
day games. But I mean tonight you have Chiefs Packers.
You're not gonna get Patrick Mahomes, I would imagine, I don't.
I think I saw that the chief Stars are not playing.
You're definitely not getting Aaron Rodgers. You're probably not getting

Jordan's love maybe for a little bit. The Chiefs didn't
even play Chad Heny last week. I don't know if
he's gonna play this week. They played the third string quarterback.
I mean, I'll watch it because I'm I'm weirdo like
people are watching third sturting has played each other. It's
just like me, probably, I just like I just can't
can't get enough of it. I'm in I'm watching all

of it. Yeah. Well, hey, I can see the Niners
holding onto Jimmy G past this last week of preseason games.
You never know. I understand they don't want to just
get rid of the guy when they could get something
in return. That's fine, but at some point, like you're
holding this guy on your roster for a fourth or
a fifth round draft pick, at some point you gotta
do right by Jimmy G. Probably not even that who

who Who's your Who's your football team? A Dolphins? Dolphins
quarterback of all? I couldn't imagine rooting for a team
that had the most accurate quarterback of vols. I must
fill you with a lot of joy. Uh huh oh,
it was great, you know, it was great that the
Burrito days. But is that a shot at two US?

That was the first? I don't know. It seems odd
that you can't find a way to use your franchise

just keep trying to play football. It's been nice just

answering football questions. Uh, you know, and hopefully hopefully no
more drama in the city. That's what That's what I
hope good answer, just downplay it, downplay it, downplay it
and uh, but the question remains, does this in your
mind the Brady Gronk think, does this put any more pressure?

he's looked at, is it just like comparing him even
more to Brady and what could have been? No, no, no,

I think Derek Carr actually is a little underrated the
way he played very well last season, but he's been

extra pressure on him this year. There might be pressure
on Josh McDaniels to kind of, um, you know, get
you kind of make up for what he did in Denver, right,
And there's a lot of I think, like just angst
to see him as a head coach again. Um, but
there's no there's no pressure on car this year to
be Tom Brady or to be compared to Tom Brady. Okay,
we gotta get to this. Which NFL QB is under

the most pressure this season. Jeff and I will compare notes.

it's the Is it the Jets in the NFL with
the longest that what no Jets made the playoffs? Um

it's the Jets. I think they are number one on
the list right now. I think that when the last time,
yeah probably yeah, yeah, yeah, but the Mariners it's been
roughly what twenty years? Is that right? Yeah? Yeah, it'd

And uh, I don't know about this new format in
the playoffs. You like it. It's really the easiest way.

It really hurts. I think it really hurts the teams
that are good, like I don't look the doctors want
to sit out like a whole week way. Yeah, I
know that's weird, isn't it. Yeah. It's kind of like
the old school NFL where there used to be twelve
total playoff teams, so before we went to seven in
each conference. It's the same format where the top two
get the bye week in the NFL. The same thing

in baseball this year. But yeah, you're right, week without
playing players, you know, they're obviously there their arms are
gonna be fresh, But how about hitting right in a
week and timing rhythms. Still, they do some simulated games
and whatnot in the meantime. You know, obviously for pitching,
that's great. You get everyone loosen, you know, everyone rest up,
(23:46):
and you have your full rotation ready to go. Um.
But yeah, I mean I you know, I hate to
dodge yourself. It hurts that I'm good for that. Good. Okay.
So if we circle back to if Derek Carr isn't
number one on him the list which NFL quarterback is
under the most pressure this season? Who would you put
at the top of your list. There's two. There's two
(24:09):
that I think tie for this, and it's Jalen Hurts
and into a Um. Okay. Now, the difference is Jalen
Hurts was drafted by this current coaching staff, where to
it was not. So there is a little bit of
an attachment to making sure that that Jalen Hurts is
successful because Hallie Roseman and Nick Sirianni want him to
(24:31):
be good. Right. No, No, Nick Serrani did not draft him,
but Hallie Roseman did. Um. And then in Miami they
have a brand new general manager and head coach. So
I don't was Chris career around when they drafted to uh,
I think he was just fired the okay, then he
drafted two of that Okay, pretty much the same thing
(24:53):
as the Eagles and UM, so maybe there's a little
bit more of an investment in both those guys from
you know, obviously coaching staff's not right investment there. Um,
but you've surrounded at least Jalen Hurts with a lot
of talent, right, you traded for a wide receiver, You
good offensive defensive lines. You know, you're obviously had success
the last year's a playoff team your division. I mean,
(25:15):
you should probably the favorite now with the Toronto Smith
injury doing your division. And you look at the Dolphins
and what they've done too to add to to you know,
to to of the left left tackle. Um, got another
wide receiver. Um, it's a quarterback friendly offense at least
as designed you know, on paper, and there needs to
be improvement because the Dolphins and they lost the first
(25:37):
round draft pick for the tampering thing, but there's still
in a position with all the draft picks they had
to get themselves another quarterback. So are the Eagles I
mean that part of it is that this is a
very quarterback friend. I just saw a tweet from Jim
Naggy Senior, who's head of the Senior Bowl, who said,
you know, they have like a watch list heading into
the season for how many quarterbacks might make the Senior Bowl.
He's an eight and twenty two right now is on
the watch list. Last year they were like, it's a
(25:59):
huge year for quarter backs. Were last year it wasn't
right even though there were guys drafted, but they were
just drafted, you know, third round basically. Well that's a
good point too, because you might not have to pull
Vault into the top five or ten to get one
of those guys. You could be at the end of
the first round and get a quality guy. So that's
why I think that there's pressure on those guys to
be really good this season. Um. Now, again, both general managers,
(26:21):
I thought Chris ger got fired, but so apologize for
that one. Um So there's a little bit. There's a
little bit of the GMS wanting those guys to succeed. Right,
There's gonna be some of that. So maybe that keeps
those guys they're a little bit longer. But from the
coaching staff perspective. Again, they didn't draft these players. Um,
and that does matter, I think, because you obviously trying
(26:41):
to draft players that fit what you want to do.
But the best coaches, of course find ways to make
it work anyways, and so I do. But again, if
two comes out and play poor this year with a
revamped offensive line with Tyreek Yell and Jalen Waddle, there's
gonna be a little bit of of like, are you
sure he's the guy here? So big year for those guys.
I also think it's weirdly an important year for for
(27:04):
Aaron Rodgers because how many years are gonna keep winning
all these games and not make any noise in the playoffs.
That's becoming his legacy and I and I don't think
he cares, and I don't think that it changes are
from the Fox Sports. I don't think it changes our
opinion on him. But I think if he wins another championship,
it just elevates him even further. Right, Like he's first
(27:26):
Bell Hall of Famer, but winning another championship puts him
in a different different light. Um, it would do a lot. Also,
he probably doesn't care about this, but it do a lot.
If he goes out there and balls out without the
Vonte Adams, that's a big deal. I think he'll be
fine without Adams. I am not one of these guys
who thinks that Patrick Mahomes Aaron Rodgers losing one wide
(27:47):
receiver makes them all of a sudden be a bunch
of slaw meals like they're gonna be fine, Like they're
gonna be fine at quarterback. Like it's it's not a problem.
There's no way their numbers are just gonna drop significantly.
But I mean, you're using your sports car, you're high
end sports cause that's a big deal. Well, I think
I was gonna slip a little bit. But Pat Mahomes,
though they added a bunch of talent back, the Packers
(28:09):
did not do the same thing. Yeah, so I can
make an argument that Chiefs as a as a whole
in the wide receiver room are better this season, which
they are. They still Travis Kelsey Um fortunately the backup Tendant,
I guess they're blocking Tendant got hurt. But you know,
Noah Grady had a good preseason so far. Uh fort
Suns score a bunch of touchdowns. The Packers have more
(28:30):
to more issues offensive line injuries and just don't have
the weapons the Chiefs have, but they're gonna This offense
is still gonna score a bunch of points. They're gonna
be fine. But I think there's I think there's pressure
on Rogers just kind of image wise, like how many
games are gonna win in the regular seasons? Thirty nine
the last three years. Yeah, it's get to that stage. Yeah,
I'm gonna go in a different direction. Most pressure in
(28:51):
the NFL is a quarterback. I'm gonna go with Trey Lance.
And my reasoning is the Niners quarterback. Think of the
price tag, how much they had to give to get
him to get up there in the number three overall pick.
They're giving up multiple first round draft picks. The comparisons
to Jimmy G right, Like, I don't think it's fair.
Jimmy G was was good, but I thought it was
(29:13):
more so along for the ride than the reason for
all of this team's success. But in any event, it's
gonna be compared to Jimmy g he was thirty one
and fourteen as a starter. Why they even get rid
of Jimmy G If Trey Lance struggles, that's gonna be
the deal. And then also Trey Lance played at the
FCS level, he didn't play a lot, and now he
(29:33):
takes over for a team that just made it to
the NFC title game and the expectations are sky high.
So I think that's a lot of pressure on him. Now.
It's not like Jalen and Tuah, where of Jalen and
Tah underperformed, they're gone. Those teams are going in a
different direction. That's not the same thing with Trey Lance.
But I would argue that Trey Lance is under a
(29:54):
lot more scrutiny, and as a first year starting quarterback,
he doesn't have those starts under his belt, and the
expect a SS for that team is way higher than
the expectations for the Dolphins and Eagles. Um doesn't the
expectations or like kind of our perceived expectation of the
player matter a lot here, Like I'm not as high
on tray Lands as others were, and so if he
(30:15):
plays poorly, it kind of confirms how I feel about him,
I think, And the same with two. I wasn't as
it wasn't. It wasn't that wasn't high on to a
I just look at kind of the history of Alabama
quarterbacks and I was just like you know, smaller undersize
has been heard a bunch um same kind of hurts honestly, So,
like I just my explanations aren't very high for tray Land.
(30:37):
So he plays poorly, it kind of fits with what
I already perceived him to be, where if he plays
really well obviously, so that isn't the pressure all about
how we perceived him to be rather than just overall okay,
there's pressure on him? Or is that is that part
of this is GONI? I hear you. Yeah, it makes sense,
but I would argue a lot of people see it
(30:57):
differently than the dude pressure on Kyle Shanahan. There's a
lot of just Trey Lance, Oh this guy, you heard
it last season. When Trey Lance takes over, it will
unlock Kyle Shanahan's full play book. And it's like that,
as a rookie, what are we talking about? But there
are still a lot of people singing his praises. So
I'm more like you with how I think a Trey lancey,
(31:18):
but I don't think we're in the majority on that.
And and there's also, um, you know, there's pressure on
it to work because as you mentioned, all the assets
that you traded. But you know, you have to figure
out what the quarterback on a rookie contract pretty quickly.
If it's if he's a young guy or not right,
you should figure that out like a S A P.
I mean, I think outside of Tom Brady, who's the
(31:41):
last quarterback to win a Super Bowl that wasn't on
the rookie contract? I guess Matt Stafford. I mean veterans
like Stafford and Brady. I mean, like it doesn't happen
very often. So you know, you have a chance right
now at the Niners to build this thing in the
next couple of years with you know, Trent Williams still
his you know, his peak, your defensive line still playing
the way they are um and you gotta get this.
(32:02):
You gotta get this done. And so I think there
is pressure on the entire organization to make this work
and reputation and there and the reputation of John Lynch
call Shanahan, who draft. I think it's the comparison thing.
I think if Trey Lance Falters put it this way,
if to A stumbles, there isn't why did you get
rid of the last guy to go with to one.
It's the same thing with Jalen Hurts. That will be
(32:24):
the case with Trey Lance, fair or not. You know,
that's what people are gonna say, would be the same
with two of them. I mean, why didn't the draft
just a Herbert? Right, That's the that would be that's
always tied together to that. I still have nightmares about that.
That's you thinking about. You know, I don't do a
lot of quarterback evaluations. It's not my job really. Yeah,
and so obviously, but you know, as a as an
organ guy, watched every snap ad just at Herbert. Even
(32:45):
now I see highlights it from college and I'm like,
we people just missed the boat on him, Like they
just chose to to look at like weird things like
oh he never he's never left Eugene before. Um, you know,
you know I gotta say something about that. Let's continue
this in a second, Jeff Schwartz, cause I got something

movement been better or worse for this sport? We'll get

on the Justin Herbert thing on you, but I know
you're a big college football guy, Jeff Sports, so I
wanted to throw this at you. So I saw this
where this new media deal for the Big Ten conference
with CBS, Fox NBC. They left framework within this seven
(34:36):
year deal if one specific team joins the conference, and
that would be your Notre Dame fighting Irish Irish. No
I thought there are everybody's Notre Dame fighting Irish. That's
that's untrue. So very very quick correction on that, because
I've seen that reported and um, they cannot add other
(34:57):
teams as framework because they're in other conferences. So you
can't say, like you have Oregon joins, this is how
much will add to the deal because Oregan is not
part of the Big Ten conference and they're probably Pack
twelve right now, so you can't No name is they're independent.
You're allowed to add them to the contract. You can't
do that for other school So that's something no one's
really reported. I've seen a couple of people that know
the kind of they're they're working to that report that.
(35:18):
But the most important part is there's escalators in the
deal if other teams join, doesn't have to be just
Notre Dame, just anyone who joins. We can talk again
about raising that contract. And now that that's in place,
the Big Ten can explore Now other editions like that
we're gonna do you see a USC and then add
four pack twelve. They want to do this first have
(35:41):
their name is the option to join for the next
couple of years, right, because this deal is actually not
happening for two more years. Right, there's two more years
before you still in USC joined the conference, right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
So it's like over a seven billion dollar deal over
seven years. And you're right, I don't think this is
just duck hatred. I think it's legitimate point here where
it sounds fancier than it might be that Notre Dame
(36:04):
specifically is mentioned. They're supposed to negotiating good faith if
there are other schools not named Notre Dame that are
added to the big town. So there's so many ideas
here right with this. So um, look, if you depends
if you like the sport as a regional support or
national sport, depends how you feel about all this, right
because as a regional sport, like I'm a pactwell of
guy at work Pacte Radio. I went to Oregon. My
(36:26):
parents are Bruno lums like group in Los Angeles. I
hate it, right. I like my conference, I like my teams.
I like the traditional nature of college sports. But nationally
we're gonna get now USC Michigan, US, Michigan State, US
Ohio State, like we're gonna get good football games. Like
nationally speaking, this provides a better a better product regionally obviously,
(36:47):
like my job at Pactwell Radio might not be there
in two years because it might be a PAC Conference
not not great, right, I like my I like my job,
you know, on a Big Ten radio. But but so
so there's that now, Um, I understand the idea of
wanting to expand more through the Big Ten Conference, right
(37:08):
because there's gonna be eventually two major conferences, and there
are really you can argue that already are now to
write the SEC and the Big Tent. And if the
Big Ten is able to snag up the best West
Coast properties, they're gonna have a whole West Coast arm
of the Big Tent, right, Like you can own the
West coast the Midwest now and you have New York
and d C. Technically with Rutgers in Maryland, I mean
(37:29):
they countlo as their markets. But that's where it's headed.
Like they're just building more and more. So it comes
down to this. It's a blend in my mind. Is
it better or worse for college football? There are some
good things about it's not all bad. There's some bad
things about it. It's not all good. It's a blend
of both. So which do you think it is more of?
Has it been better or worse with all this realignment
(37:51):
in college football? Again, there's not there's not one answer
because again, if you view this regionally, this is not
very fun. But which percentage does it favor more? Better
or worse? Which is it more of? Probably when this
is all said and done, Probably, I don't know. It's
(38:12):
I think you have to add then you name him.
You like, listen to this right and the big time
talk about paying players. So maybe in the end it's
a positive if you're paying the players more money. Um,
I think right now it's it's just all up in
the air. Time. I wish I'd give you a better answer, man,
because it's there's it's both negative and positive. It's kind
of in the middle of at the moment, it's up
in the air, it's both, right. I just want to
know what are we looking at here? Let's define the relationship, right, like,
