that's the news here on the studio front. Now we
do have some bad news to also share with somebody
in the broadcasting world. That bad news goes to Sean
Payton because it looks like Brandon Staley is going to
stay as head coach at the Chargers. I mean, that's
the that's the feeling there after the changes that were

(03:34):
made yesterday, we talked about what's going to happen. Could
there be some staff changes? Is he really get to
just say, you know, gotta gotta survive here and gotta
make some moves. And so because of that, it's gonna
be a new offensive coordinator and a quarterbacks coach. Joe
Lombardi and Shane Day are both out with the l
A Chargers, and so now they'll be on the lookout

(03:54):
for a brand new o C, a brand new quarterbacks coach,
but not a new head coach if we can read
to what this means. And they're going to have a
meeting with the media later on today to explain sort
of the direction of the organization from there. So, yeah,
it's too bad. This is Uh. The toughest part about
this is if you think about Justin Herbert, usually when

you're o C and your quarterback coach get fired, you're
not doing a good enough job. But I don't know
that anyone would say that about the job he's done
since he's been there, like he's he's been incredible. And
that's the hard part for however, that message is being
portrayed to Justin Herbert. I'm sure he was close with

(04:38):
Shane Day. I'm sure he was close with Joe Lombardi,
and it's it's got to be tough on him because
you know, their offense um, you know, has not exceeded expectations.
They never they haven't been to run the football for
whatever reason. Austin ekelers a heck of a back, and
their offensive line actually is capable of running the ball.
They just they don't really do it. And maybe that's

(04:59):
because of how how good Herbert can be, but there's
just a lot to be desired within that offense this year.
One stat I thought was really really interesting that I
was kind of going through the past couple of days
was they've got the ability to track how often you know,
guys are covered where you know, instead of guys like

(05:21):
kind of breaking open free and so forth. And the
league average for for on pass plays everyone being coveredgs
like thirty six. Right, so offenses league average about a
third of the time. There's just nowhere to go to
the football, you know, credit the defense covering everyone down
and all that. This past week the Chargers and the

(05:43):
Bucks on six and fifty percent of the plays everyone
was covered, and it was like there's just an outlier
where it kind of reflected poorly on Joe Lombardi, who's
now fired, and then Byron Leftwich, who may or may
not be, which we'll get to its some point. But
it's just kind of interesting this offseason that everyone is

(06:05):
getting clipped right now. If there's issues with the team,
it's it's an offensive coordinator, and if teams are thriving,
it's an offensive minded head coach. It all seems to
be right now made all about the offensive side of
the ball and whether a team sinks or swims, or
whether whether they excel or if they struggle. It's all
really being blamed on appointed to the people who are

(06:28):
who are handing that side of the football. I think
Justin Herbert saved Brandon Brandon Staley's job, and I think
the firings are basically a reprieve to Staley. And your
quarterback loves you, and once you hear you got one

(06:48):
more chance, you get one more chance. So they better
make these these picks, these these next decisions for O
C and whatever other coaches that it is that they're
bringing in. You better make it work this time. That's
kind of how I I kind of walked away from it.
And you know, for me, I enjoyed listening to like

(07:12):
kind of like the breakdowns of how it applies to
the exs and ose in the on field. I don't
think there's anybody in the business that does it better
than Brady Quinn. Yeah, definitely not you, which makes it
easy for me to kind of come from the more, um,
you know, I guess the perspective of how I think
a coach would be feeling in in the moment, or

(07:34):
you know, how how it feels from from the emotional standpoint.
More so, have you ever had to fire I have?
That's that conversation, like, um, it was and get out
of here. Now there's a box. No, no, it's not volatile.
It's it's definitely not volatile. It's it's it's more me
than it is you. And that was kind of the

(07:56):
conversation I had when I had to let my old
c go sel reference. It was, yeah, it's more me
than it's you. Yeah, it's me, it's not you. I
failed you. Okay, So so can I ask you this, like,
at what point do you know there had a big time?
You look back and you go, this guy's not gonna
be like game three, game to how many how many

(08:18):
games later do you fire him? We finished the season games,
and with knowing that he wasn't gonna be back. We
were on the other side of five hundred. We weren't
we weren't up five hundred. We we were a winning team,
we were a successful team, but our offense was it
was just too painful for me to endure it for

(08:39):
another season. So I took over the offensive play calling
duties and assigned my what what has all? He's been
my defensive assistant for since I started coaching. So that
was that was how we ran it. And you know,
then we went undefeated. So you know, and people know
I'm as a defender, but you know, I played a

(09:01):
lot of offense when when I was growing up. But
that's not the point. The point is that when I
knew that are like you're talking about guys not running
open or not seeing what and we're talking high school.
We're not talking pros or college, you know not. And
and I mean, maybe I'm wrong for having that type
of expectation, but it's like, look at what the defense

(09:22):
are giving you look at the sets there in you know,
how many guys do they have up front? Why are
you throwing the ball when they're sitting back and they
have three men lined up up front, like we should
be running the ball, you know, just just certain little
things that you know, in terms of adjustments that I
just didn't see us making the adjustments. We were making

(09:45):
things way harder than what we needed to. So did
you buy that coach and one way to ticket the Thailand?
You know? If I knew what I know now, Now,
I'll tell you what he didn't have. He didn't have
any trouble with with with the ladies. I'll tell you
that he's a good looking dude. So maybe he did
get a ticket to Thailand. I don't know, Yeah, I mean,

(10:08):
after yesterday, I look at Thailand very differently. I'll tell
you that, who doesn't. I had a different idea what
Thailand was. Maybe didn't even care. But now I'm a fan,
a fan of Thailand, just based on the luggage clip
brought with. I mean, based on Cliff Kingsbury wanting to
be in Thailand. I think that he has a fan
club of people who support him. Yeah, and I'm in

(10:31):
it in that club. I support him, I support his message.
I don't know, there could be a lot of people
jerk him around over there based on how things went,
you know, I'm aware of one. I'll tell you that. Well,
it depends on who's steering, all right. So on on

(10:54):
the subject of Brandon Staley, if you just sort of
look at this in and just take away some of
the I guess the situations here, but if you were
just to look at Brandon Staley's time with the Chargers,
he probably doesn't deserve to be fired. Definitely. So he
they've improved every year. He's four games over five hundred

(11:15):
as a head coach, and they just went to the playoffs. Okay,
can we pause there for a second and ask you
guys a question. I feel like we say that now
because we just look at the results on paper and
we go, oh, he's a good coach, right, Like, he's
what is the nineteen to fifteen and he's been to
the playoffs. Now granted they didn't win, but you know,

(11:36):
he's gotten in the playoffs. I feel like we're able
to say he's you know, he doesn't deserve to get
fired now. Yet if someone were to come in, if
he was to get fired and someone came in and
they immediately excel next year, I feel like we might
look back and be like, oh, he might have been
holding them back to a degree, right, because I feel

(11:58):
like the roster is one of the more talented rosters,
like when healthy, which is another issue. But I don't
know that. That's all. How I kind of see is
like we kind of don't know until someone else goes
in there, like what they're capable of, right, Yeah, And
I just think that, you know, the the health issues
and all of that stuff. Like his problem is the
things that played out that just looked bad, Like they

(12:19):
probably should have gone to the playoffs twice. They shouldn't
have lost that game. The Mike Williams handling of the injury.
We were talking about this on Monday, like the other
the other game that doesn't get brought up when it
comes to clock management. Remember that situation at Cleveland earlier
in the year where they were at midfield, they had
a fourth and one and Brandon Staley went for it

(12:42):
on fourth and one with like under a minute left,
and and the conventional wisdom would be pumped the ball away.
Jacoby Pursett was having a hard time going down the field,
and instead they went for it. They got stopped, and
the only reason they won that game is because kde
York missed the kick like that's a that's another one
of those situations. So I just I wonder what the
conversations are like with him and the front office with

(13:04):
it come when it comes to his clock management and
his thinking in those situations. I said to you guys before,
like he's either going to win and do something special
because how aggressive he is, or he'll be fired because
of it because his philosophy tends to be this, And
tell me if I'm wrong. He wants to make decisions
to win the game and be aggressive instead of making

(13:24):
decisions that won't lose them the game. And I think
there's a fine line between the two where like Bill
Belichick has been one of the greatest of all time
and at a quarterback who understood that where they never
beat themselves, and Bill Belichick rarely ever made a decision
that would allow them to beat themselves. I think Brandon
Staley puts his team in a position where they go

(13:46):
out and win it. But there's also times like just
like that, where he's given the other team an opportunity
if they miss step, if they fail to easily win
the game, and and and or if they make him
a stage right that the games out of their hands.
I mean, it's it's fun to cover. You just never
know what you're gonna get with Brandon Staley, so there's

(14:08):
a lot of entertainment. Was definitely a lot of profane
language going over text messaging during that game. Second half
of that game, in fact, there was a lot of
profanity going across the the text messaging in the first half,
like God day, Chargers is real. These boys came up
out here. Herbert's ready. Trevor Lawrence isn't the moments too big?

(14:34):
Do you understand how bad Trevor Lawrence was being talked
about in the first half of that game was historically bad.
He was getting tour up. I'm I mean, I'm a
part of like three group chats of like former former pros.
He was getting tour up. And the way it changed

(14:59):
from one half by the time now all of the
curson is going towards Brandon Stately. Everybody was cussing Brandon.
He talking to yo. Yeah, just completely changed. And then
all of a sudden, it's like we forgot about talking
about how poorly Trevor Lawrence play because they want the

Chargers totally redeemed themselves. He took the spotlight off with
Trevor Lawrence. It was almost like the chargers said, oh,
you think you know how to have a meltdown. Watch this. Yeah,

I mean, listen, who shouldn't, But instead he passed up
on a trip to write elephants and watch moy Tie

say about a future just on my side, it's a
physical part, it's the emotional part, it's the spiritual part.
It's the ability to go back out there and give it.
And then you know, it just comes down to the
intuition and what it feels like in your body and
what it feels like in your mind. And once you commit,
and you commit and you will take it some time,
take some time pausing, letting kind of all the emotions
kind of run through you, and then and then starting

to see how it feels day after day and what's
coming to mind. You're missing it, not missing it, You're
excited about the season, new challenge, whatever it might be,

make their decision and just even the spiritual component, you know,
like how many guys will will talk about that. But
sometimes when I listen to him talk, I feel like,
what happens if he has like a bad bullet chili
that day has to make his decision, because like he's
talking a lot about how his body feels. Man Like
you guys ever had like a meal that just made

your stomach turn for like only four hours last night?
There you go, so like if that happened to be
the day you're trying to make this decision, Like, my
body is just rejecting this decision right now. It was
off the toilet. It's like it was the food. It wasn't.
It wasn't the football. I mean, who knows if it's

that's it? No cheese. You don't remember we went over

differently right, like Brett would be on some farms somewhere
that are like a remote area of I don't know,
was it Mississippi or something or like. And then there
was just like on TV every week talking about it
or think Brett's was way worse? Thought was it was?
I'll just say it was way more entertaining. It was

way more entertained here from him, though, like it means
like MUDs like where's Brett? Was? Exactly? It turned into
like type deal like where's Brett Far? Is he going
to be on the team? Where's Brett Farr? He's jumping
on his private jet? Where's Brett Far? And the conversation
back then was, well, it's not fair to Rogers. He
deserves a chance to play. It's the same thing. We're

doing the same thing all these years, threat far. If
he's rotting on the private jet provided by the state
of Mississippi, what I wasn't going to do it. I

out of line and you need to have some sensitivity.

he's coming off one of his worst seasons. I think

you got fifty million dollars you're coming back to isn't
fifty year? We'll come back. It's a hundred way the
next two years. But this year it's kind of like Stafford.
Stafford came off a bad season. It's like he's got

fifty three million reasons to come back. You know, do
you think trade Zach Wilson? Yesterday I said, do you
ben to him and let him learn for Rogers? Hell? Yeah? Like,
oh yeah, you finished out that contract. Man, Hey you
put Woody to the test. Go Hey, you really say
you can spend as much as you want let's go

after Aaron Rodgers will h a hundred million next two years.
I feel like that's what he's saying when he put
that out there to the media. It's like one of
these big it's one that he said, we're going aufter
a big time quarterback. I will love to see how
that would all come together. That'd be fun to see.
Do you think the Packers want Rogers back. I think
they're ready to move I think they've been ready to

move on. I think I think they're at the point
where they say, look, what have we got? Maybe a
year left tops they've been They've felt like they've been
held hostage by Aaron rod I just curiosity. I want
to see Jordan Love at this point. I don't. You
don't want to see I don't. I don't know that
he's the answer, but I just know that whatever it's

going to be moving into the future, I'm sure and
I'm certain they feel as though we can at least
take control of of the franchise back like we the
minute Aaron Rodgers is out of there, there's no one
that's on that on that roster that has that type

of hold over a team that has no owner to
stand up to what he represents. Like, so I think
that outweighs everything at this point is to get gang control.
Back to that point, I mean, there's just such a
unique franchise. You know, you're right, it's it's Mark Burphy,

but it's really not because they have a board too
that helps make that decision. So it's it's like a
group of people, and I just I feel like the
optics of a guy who's a first ballot future Hall
of Famer and everything else that comes along with it.
You know, it's tough, Like you move on from a
guy who can play as as a four time m

VP level and it's hard to sell to your fan base,
you know, Like I don't know what you sell to
your fan base. There is it? Jordan's love is another
quarterback either way. I think there's some hesitance to want
to move on because they know how hard it's going
to be to get guys to want to come up
and play there. I mean, when Aaron Rodgers Rogers made

(26:16):
the comment that guys they don't come to Green Bay
to play football, they come to Green Bay and play
with me, he wasn't wrong. I mean, it's a tough
place to play I think I've told the story before.
They have workout bonuses within the structure of their contract
because it incentivizes guys to stay up there in the
off season. Otherwise guys aren't there, Like they don't come

(26:36):
up in this spring somewhere else training. You literally have
to put workout bonuses for a quarter million dollars half
a million dollars in their contracts did just to keep
them up there, or to keep them there for four
days a week, I mean, forget five four days during
off season. So I tend to look in and go,

that's gonna. I mean, they they were lucky enough to
be able to fall into Aaron Rodgers after Brett Farv.
I'm with LaVar. I don't think they're lucky enough to
fall into that same scenario again with Jordan Love, and
what if they do three straight front of not not
it's not it's not. You're gonna say right now based
on other thance you have that Jordan's Love is not

going to be a Hall of Famer. Can we save
this lead for like twenty five years from now and
roll this back? I hate this please The track record
they've been on, Yeah, I just I wonder how long
this is going to go on because at some point
the packers are like, dude, make a decision, like let's
let's figure out what direction we're gonna go and then

and then we roll from there. But him on the
Jets would be fun though, and there's there's a lot
to work with on that team. Would either be it
would be a love hate relations. I mean, is Aaron
Rodgers spiritually and mentally prepared, Like, keep in mind, you
can manipulate the media in so many different ways. He

is the largest standard of media probably within the market
he's playing in right now. He's a small fish and
a very very large pond if he goes to New York,
so the way things have been handled by him would
would be drastically and dramatically different if he went there. Now,

with that being said, it would be ironic and coincidental
that we started the segment off talking about one Brett
Farve and he ends up in New York as well. So,
I mean, and Brett Farve seemed to navigate pretty well

out there. Yeah, you know, I was in New York
at the same time. Yes, So here's what's funny, Right,
there's what's funny. Did you also have crocs on. Hey,
I've seen that, reporter. I'll tell you that in our
locker room. And and and I'm just telling I'm I'm

not going that far I'm talking about. I'm just saying.
I'm just saying I can understand why Brett got I
can understand why Brett got carried away. I ain't gonna
say I condone it, but I'm gonna say I understand.

I can't show off his new watches. I don't understand
the problem is. I would just say, you know, every
once in a while, when an old head gives a
hold of some technology, there could be a mistake that's made.
He was trying to show his shoes that he had bought.
He was he was trying to show that new pedicure
that that that he had just gotten done, and show

the level of detail and accuracy of what the tech
that did his feet. You know how much pride and
you respect they put towards taking care of his feet, Grandpa,
He just forgot to zoom in on his feet. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
