Speaker 1 (00:01):
Everyone out there wants to win. But what are you
willing to pay? What are you willing to sacrifice to
win football games? Because it's hard, man, and you know
SEC or the Big Ten or the NFL whatever, it
is hard to win football games. Or there's a lot
of great players, a lot of great teams, a lot
of great coaches, and everyone has to be on the
same page, going in the same direction, working towards the
same goal, or it's never going to work.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Hey, what's up, everybody. It's LeVar Arrington here, and yes,
when you see me, that means I've got an amazing
person to talk to and get some perspective on what's
good in the game. That's right. We got Tim Couch
twenty twenty four, College Football Hall of Famer, National Football Foundation.

(00:51):
What an awesome guy. Has accomplished quite a bit. I
played during his time, and I'll tell you what he
was as something else on that football field. You talk
about all these quarterbacks that you're seeing, he was a
pure arm and he was a player for Kentucky and
I had to deal with him first hand. And the

(01:12):
Outback Bowl it was we played h the Kentucky Wildcats.
So I'm excited for this conversation, you should be too,
because we're going to talk about things that help Tim
Couch be Tim Couch and what was good in the game.
Here we go, three two, one, bam, Here we go,

(01:36):
mister Couch. That's that's what people should refer to you
as as mister Couch. Quite accomplished, quite the accomplished athlete.
Uh done done, Just an amazing job and what you
were able to do, Tim Couch. Everyone, by the way,
just in case you didn't catch on to mister Couch,

(01:57):
uh Kentucky legend. Just when then to the Hall of
Fame a year removed? Now, how does that feel? How
does it feel to finally get that call? I mean
I had to wait quite some time, Tim, so I
couldn't believe that you weren't already in when I saw
the announcement for you. How just walk me through. How

(02:18):
did that feel for you to get that information?

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Yeah, it's unbelievable of ar You know, I think I
had to wait a few years myself, and it's just
a tough process to get into.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
You know.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
I think, as they told us there at the Hall
of Fame, I think there's around almost three million people
that have played college football, and only like thirteen hundred
people are in the Hall of Fame.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
So it's a very exclusive group of men and.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
One that I'm extremely honored to be a part of.
But you know, just just getting that call, man, it's like,
you know, you kind of watch it. You know, the
first few years you're on the final list and you
don't see your name call, you get a little disappointed,
and then you start seeing you know, guys that are
going in, not that they're not deserving, but you're like, oh, man,
you know, I mean, so you see other quarterbacks go
in and things like that. But you know, when you
finally get the call, all that goes out the window,

(03:01):
and you're so appreciative of being part of the Hall
of Fame. The ceremony out in Las Vegas with just
an incredible experience, and then one that I'll certainly go
back to each year and just kind of be part
of that deal and be around those unbelievable guys to
make the Hall of Fame what it is.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Indeed, it's such an amazing accomplishment, and so looking at
the things you've accomplished and knowing that this show is
called good in the game and just has what has
the game meant to you, Tim? Like growing up, the
life lessons, the things that we've had to get through

(03:38):
and endure. I mean, you know what it is to persevere,
you know what it is to struggle, but you also
know what it is to win and to excel and
all of those different things. Just talk to me a
little bit about what does good in the game mean
to Tim Couch.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Yeah, you know, the game of football absolutely changed my life.
And not only my life, it changes the people. Are
these lives, you know, my my brother's life, my my
my immediate family's lives. You know, now my kids lives.
So it's been it's been an absolute game changer for me.
You know, a kid who grew up in a very
small town in eastern Kentucky. I grew up in a
town of three hundred and fifty people, you know, so

(04:16):
I grew up with with not a lot of resources
and not a lot but I had very loving parents,
very supportive parents, and encouraged me to chase a dream
that was you know, kind of you know, not a
real thing coming from that, you know, from that area,
but you know, I believed in myself and had good
people around me, and you know it just uh, you know,
like I said, it's it's set me up for life.
You know, it's a it was an amazing run while

(04:36):
it was happening. Just being out on the football field
and taking that thing from high school to college to
the NFL and and living out a dream of being
a number one pick in the NFL draft and being
being a franchise quarterback in the NFL was uh, you know,
it was just unbelievable experience for me. But you know,
life after football, you know, in the business world, the
connections I made through playing the game of football has
just been unbelievable for me.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
And it's been it's opened a.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
Lot of doors, as you know, of a able to
get into some of these meetings and with some of
these people that you you know, you never thought would
be possible. And it's all because of what you accomplished
on the football field and also the type of person
you are off the field as well. So you know,
this this game has been it's been everything to me.
And uh, you know, to to say I love the
game of football and I'm so appreciative of it, if
it's just a complete understatement, it it really is who

(05:20):
I am and It's made my whole life what it is?

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeah, you have a kid, Chases is I believe you're
you're at one? I don't. I don't think you have more.
Do you have more than one?

Speaker 3 (05:31):
I've got two boys?

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Yeah? Two boys. Okay, when you're talking about those life
lessons as they apply to your boys, I know one
is older. I know he just came out not too
long ago. What what is the what's the message? Like?
How do you how do you kind of transfer your
experiences and the things that you've learned, Like there are

(05:55):
little things that you know that only you know that
can be transferred to them and be that that difference maker,
that that piece of information or that advice that really
really leads them to what they're ultimately supposed to be.

(06:16):
You know, I have two boys as well, and the
oldest did really well but didn't go pro, but is
an amazing person in in what he's doing in his
life's journeys because the same lessons that I've taught him
as it applied to what came from me or what

(06:37):
came into me in turn? Pause? Uh, for for good
in the game? Boy? What came from good in the game?
What is it? What are those lessons that you've passed
on to you know, to your kids, to your boys,
and how they you know, approach life.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Yeah, I think he said it exactly right there, Labarre.
I think it's it's not about just teaching them about
setting them up for the game of football. It's about
the game of life and setting them up for you know,
things are gonna make them successful in any field they
want to go into.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
And I think that's one of the great lessons that
football teaches us.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
You know, it's going to teach you how to work hard,
it's it's going to more importantly, it's going to teach
you how to deal with adversity because you're going to
get knocked down, you're gonna fail, You're going to lose
a big game. You're going to make a play that
loses the game for your team. You know, something bad
is going to happen to you. You're going to let
a lot of people that you care about down around you,
and that's gonna build rebellience, and that's going to teach
you how to bounce back from something like that and

(07:32):
try to minimize those mistakes to to as much as
you can. You know, for my kids, I just told them,
you know, mainly to believe in themselves. That you know,
it's it's not about what you're born with, you know,
talent wise, it's about the effort you put into this game.
Once you put in, is what you're going to get
out of it. So you know, you you have to
help work everyone no matter how big you are, how
talented you are, It's about the work you're going to

(07:53):
put in because there's so many amazingly talented kids all
across the country and you've got to do something to
separate yourself from the from the other players. And you know,
and for me and my journey, it was all about
hard work and and just being dedicated to what I
was doing. And uh, you know, it has to become
a lifestyle. It has to consume you. Uh, it has
to be everything you think about all day long, you know,
from your workouts to your training, to your nutrition obviously

(08:17):
to on the field, you know, your study and your
film and you're you're you're working on your craft, whatever
that may be. Uh So, so that's the kind of
the lessons I've passed down to them. And and and
like I said, I told them, you know, that's what's
going to carry you on in the business world too,
Whether you make it to the NFL or you don't,
uh that that's fine, but you're going to go into
the business world either before the or you know, after
your college career or after your NFL career, You're going

(08:37):
to get into the business world. And these these type
of uh, you know, the leadership skills, these type of
uh you know, ability to work with other people and
uh you know, work towards a common goal. These are
all things that are going to carry you through life
in any fields you get into.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
You started a company, you're in a wealth business, and
and and the idea of what you've been able to
do with with Meridian right, correct, Meridian Wealth that's right.
How has that applied? You just talked about those lessons
and how they translate. How does that apply for you
and what you're doing in the business world.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Yeah, Meridian Wealth Management has been a company my brother
and I started about uh started about thirteen years ago
or so. We're in several different states now, really growing
and got a very successful business there. But you know,
for me, it's it's about you know, talked about those
relationships earlier that the game of football brought to me, uh,
you know, and it's this business, you know, the financial

(09:30):
business is is a big relationship type of business, and
you know, getting in these doors and shaking the right
hands and you know, and it's just you know, building
these relationships. And you know, I think, you know, I
think for me, it's just just just that, you know,
going out and talking to these people and and and
letting them know that they're in good hand.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
You know.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Well, somebody hands you a big check of their money
and they trust you with it, you know, I think
that goes a long way. And you know, I think
that your reputation speaks a lot about you know, the
type of person you are. The people are going to
trust you with that type of money to do the
right things with it. So I think that, you know,
hopefully I've built that over over my life and my
career that people trust.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
That I'm going to do the right things.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
I'm in it for the right reasons, and uh, you know,
we we try to do the best buyer clients and
it's been it's been a great business for us so far,
and we're looking forward to growing and expanding it.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
Team. What what does the word team and what does
the word team work? The addition of team work, team
and team work. What when you hear that, what what
do you think of?

Speaker 1 (10:28):
You know, I think for me, when I think hear
the word team, it's it's just you know, we played
the ultimate team sport in football, and it's all it's
never about an individual. You know, for a quarterback or
you know, a great player like yourself at a linebacker position,
whatever it is.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
You're only going to be as good as a.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Defensive lineman in front of you, right, And I'm only
going to be as good as the offensive line in
front of me giving me time to throw, with the
wide receivers making plays after the catch. Like you're so
dependent on everyone around you in this game. Uh, it's
it's never about you. It has to be. It has
to be way bigger than that. You have to be
you know, you're playing for the guy next year.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
You know.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
I think my biggest motivator in my career was was
fear of failure. You know, I didn't want to let
the other person down next to me. You know, I
wanted them to say, we know we can count on
this dude every Saturday or every Sunday, whatever it may be,
that he's going to give everything he's got. He put
in every effort during the week of preparation and he's
going to study it. And you know, I didn't always

(11:19):
play great, but you know I always gave gave great effort,
and I think my teammates appreciated that. I think I
played the game with a certain toughness and uh, you know,
so I think it's about giving, you know, everything you've
got to the team and working together. You know, you
know you've got to talk about teamwork, and you know
it's all about working together, as you know, towards a
common goal. You know, every everyone out there wants to win.
But what are you willing to pay? What are you

(11:40):
willing to sacrifice to win football games? Because it's hard, man,
and you know, the SEC or the Big Ten or
the NFL whatever, it is hard to win football games.
Or there's a lot of great players, a lot of
great teams, a lot of great coaches, and everyone has
to be on the same page, going in the same direction,
working towards the same goal, or it's never going to work.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Yeah. Absolutely. My last question for you is an interesting one.
I mean it's simple, but it's plain community. You know,
I often talk about how you know, people talk about
how gung ho I am about Penn State and different
things like that, and I may be delusional and how
I view things with what takes place with our school

(12:19):
and different things like that, and it's like, now I'm
not delusional. I just understand the value of what my
community represents and that community to me has been everything.
You know. I just love love Penn State, the Penn
State community so much. I know when I came to Kentucky,
it was like I was walking with the goat when

(12:41):
I was in lets And so what is like, what
does community mean to you? What has that meant to you?
And you know, how do you, if anything, how do
you service be a person of service to the community
that you know that loves you so much.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Yeah, you know, I think that's a great point.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
And you know, me growing up in the state to
Kentucky staying here to play by college football, you know,
the people of Kentucky have they've supported my career and
followed it from the high school level all the way
through to the NFL. So certainly they've they've given me
a ton of support. And you know, you feel that,
you know, when you're going through it as as a player,
you feel that support and that love from from the
fan base and the community. So I do everything I

(13:20):
can to get back to this community.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
You know.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
I do a lot of stuff with the kids, whether
it's you know, speaking at football camps or going to schools. Uh,
you know, doing charity events, given my time, you know,
donating you know, memorabilia, well whatever.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
It may be, to raise money.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
And and you know, I've done a lot with the
lext And Cancer Foundation, the lext And Heart Association, a
lot a lot of those different things that you know
we've given time and money to and just try to
try to try to do the best we can.

Speaker 3 (13:43):
Every year.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
We also have a thing with Coach Stoops here, our
our football coach at the University of Kentucky. We do
a Coach Is for Kids event every year that Meridian
Wealth Management sponsors and all the money goes back to
the UK children's hospitals. So we've read to raise a
ton of money on that end. So just whatever I
can do to be helpful in this community, to be
a part of the community, and uh and and uh

(14:04):
you know, do whatever I can to to make this
beauty grow and be better.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
And in every way, possible. I'm always willing to do that.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
I did the interview with you while everything was going
on with the floods, so that was super cool. How
how quickly you jumped into action when the floods took place,
and and the assistance that that you guys, you know,
gave and during that that hard time. So I know,
I know community means a lot to you. And it's

(14:31):
always been a pleasure man getting an opportunity to catch
up with you, and and was really excited about this
one just because I know, you know, I know your greatness.
I had to experience it in person live and and
and as you get older, you start to really really
appreciate those moments that that you had when guys really

(14:52):
really you saw that that had greatness. So, Man, I
really appreciate you taking the time out to do the interview.
And Man, keep doing it, keep popping up and people
are seeing you do do the great things that you're doing,
and the business is growing. It's just it's a pretty
cool deal to be able to watch it take place.
So Man, wish you all the luck in the world

(15:14):
and thank you for coming on.

Speaker 3 (15:16):
Absolutely, Man, I appreciate Labar. It's always break catching up
with you.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
That was Tim Couch, everybody, and what a guy. I
tell you what. Talk about doing it the right way.
Tim Couch has been one of those guys who has
done it the right way on and off the field.
His accolades are amazing. He's an All American, he's a
College Football Hall of Famer, National Football Foundation College Football

(15:41):
Hall of Famer. He's a top draft pick to Cleveland
in the ninety nine draft. His resume is pretty pretty long,
and it's pretty extensive. He's like mister Kentucky. You know.
He's something like a big deal in Kentucky for football.
So to all you football pures, make sure you look
him up. Check out Tim Couch and check out Meridian

(16:02):
Wealth as well. This is what being good in the
game is all about. The results that come from the
things that we're able to accomplish post career. So thanks
for coming on. Tim is another great addition of good
in the game. And until next time, I'm LeVar Arrington.
