Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is the best of two pros and a couple
Joe with LaVar Arings and rating Win and Jonas Knox
on Fox WORTS Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
We've obviously got preseason in the NFL wrapping up here.
We're going to catch up with Kenny Dillingham coming up
here shortly. But one of the things that we were
talking about yesterday, which sparked all sorts of fun back
and forth in conversation, was exactly what's going on there
with Justin Fields in New York. Aaron Glenn defending Justin Fields,
(00:36):
and we were pointing out, how you know, it does
create a little bit of an interesting aspect to Week
one in the sense that the Jets in essence chose
Justin Fields over Aaron Rodgers. Both those teams are playing
each other, and LeVar was really citing all of a
sudden with the New York Jets, which he was way
(00:58):
against the past two years on this show, and Brady
and I both accepted full responsibility bad call, thought they
would be better. You're right, you can't you overcome dysfunction,
And it's just it's interesting hearing some of the stories
that are coming out of New York. Already we're not
even at the final preseason game, and all of a sudden,
(01:19):
the Jets are holding secret practices. The word is the
Jets held a practice on Sunday, the following Saturday night's
lost to the Giants with no assistant coaches. It was
just Aaron Glenn and the players. Glenn may have gotten
the idea from Bill Parcells, who did that back in
(01:40):
the day. But even then Parcels, you know, took all
the coaches off the field and just said, we don't
like how you're practicing. You guys figure it out. But
it reportedly was not supposed to get out. Garrett Wilson
did an interview with some social media influencer and then
it got out. So the players got asked about it,
of course because it's New York. And here was Andre Cisco,
(02:01):
the safety with the Jets, who discussed the practice that
Aaron Glenn called, what is that you guys kind of
an ownership thing over.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Whatever, Yeah, ownership thing and also just us, like you said,
owning the calls, owning the defense, and really leaning into
you know, what is it that our coaches are going
to be calling and why are they calling it? And
can we even step in and kind of predict it,
you know as a defense, so you know, sure what
kind of took over those duties on that day And
it was just player led from that standpoint, So you know,
we gathered ourselves, we took ownership of how many reps
(02:31):
you're going to get, and then just holding guys account
of how we're getting to the ball, executing the calls
and so it was effective.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Is that kind of an AG driven thing like you
mentioned that you guys after the.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Game or all calling out.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Yeah, so that was the AG thing. And he put
us in position just alert into and what we're going
to walk into so that it wasn't a surprise at all.
But yeah, he prepared us for it. And you know,
he said, this is something that he envisions his team being,
you know, a player driven team, and so those player
driven practices are just a way to enforce it.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
So again that was Jet safety Andre Cisco talking about
the players only with Aaron Glenn included practice they had
Sunday following Saturday night's preseason game against the Giants. I
don't know about you, I just feel like we're already
taking an odd path here with this whole thing with
Aaron Glenn.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
No, no, no, no, no, this is fine.
Speaker 5 (03:20):
Like this is something that as a head coach you're
trying to get the players and the team to understand.
They're only gonna go as far as the leadership in
that lockerom. That's the reality of most teams. It's player led,
it's not coach led. You know, we're gonna speak with
Kenny Dillingham coming up here in this next segment, and
(03:43):
I would imagine he'll imagine he'll echo that it's about players,
not not coaches. So give the the assistant coaches the
day off, allow the players to get in sync and
understand situationally, what's gonna happen out there in the field.
I mean, all sorts of stuff happens out the course
of the game. Headsets go out, you can't get the
communication in you're on a big third down. Yeah, you
(04:05):
better make sure that you know your quarterback, your you
know linebacker, your middle linebacker, Mike linebacker, they know what
to call, you know, or even just signal in, hey,
hey good boys, this is the coverture plan, like, this
is what we want to run. So making sure that
the players understand the scheme and why they're doing what
they're doing is just as important as anything. And I
(04:28):
actually think this is a unique way of doing it.
You know, I've had coaches do all kinds of different
things through the years to help players get a better
understanding and and you know, feel more accountable to each
other and to the coaching staff. I mean, I remember,
I remember a year where offensive players switched the defense.
Defense switched to the offense, and we did it. We
did it whole install did an entire day in camp.
(04:51):
And the whole reason for it was you don't have
the perspective of the other side of the ball, so
you don't know what their job entails, how difficult their
job is. So live in their shoes for a day,
understand what that feels like, and then you could have
a greater understanding for you know, instead of being frustrated
that they're not converting on third down, you can have
a better understanding of why.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
So there's all sorts of lessons to be learned from that.
Speaker 5 (05:15):
I think it's a good it's a good exercise will
matter the grand scheme of things, maybe if enough players
buy in. But you know, to me, I don't look
at this as Okay, they got drummed in their preseason game.
This is reactionary. I think this is more of hey, like,
we've got a little more time here to develop and
work as a team before we get a season. It's
(05:36):
all about game planning, and this is an opportunity for
us to grow together as a team.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
If they get wiped out Week one. I don't know, man,
I just I got a really bad feeling about this
whole thing. The handling of the Aaron Rodgers stuff was strange.
This I mean, I get the idea behind it, but
it feels like pretty early on that he's got to
(06:04):
like have the players run their own practice, Like this
would feel like something you would do, maybe do if
you felt like they weren't paying attention or weren't all
there in the middle of the season. And we're not
even before the last preseason game. They're already doing it.
It just it just feels like it's already kind of awkward.
And then the Justin Field stuff and his response to
(06:26):
the Justin Field stuff, it just it seems like with
Ben Johnson, and you know, they're both first time coaches,
both from the same staff in Detroit, like you can
kind of understand the plan a little bit. But with
Aaron Glenn. It feels like things are kind of well,
(06:46):
we'll just try this out and and I'm gonna try
that out, and and this is how I feel about
this and this, and in that media market, it's going
to be a frenzy, and especially if the guy you
let go like we talked about yesterday, performs well and
the guy you brought in struggles, And on top of that,
you're holding unique practices like this before the season even starts.
(07:09):
I just I'm a little skeptical, skeptical about the whole thing.
Maybe it don't make sense. Listen. Maybe the roster's good
enough to where they overcome it. I don't know. It
just I'm a little seems a little suspect to me.
Speaker 5 (07:21):
I understand the hesitation. I think if you're going to be,
you know, hesitant about any of it's the fact that
he is a first time head coach. They've got a
first time offensive play caller, even though you know Engstrand
was part of the play calling process in Detroit, he
was behind Ben Johnson, and so there's there's questions there.
(07:41):
You know, Steve Wilkes takes over his defensive coordinator. The
forty nine ers moved on from him. You know, they
didn't feel like he was doing a good enough job there.
So I think when you look at everyone who's being
anointed and put in positions, and by the way, Aaron
Glenn's stated he's not calling the defense, he's delegated to
Steve Wilkes, I think when you look at it from
that aspect, there's a lot of question marks. There's a
(08:02):
question marks about the quarterback and whether not justin fields
can ultimately do it consistently at a high enough level.
This question is are going to be about what the
offense looks like, their identity, Have they improved the offensive line?
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Have they not? You know, how good can this defense be?
Speaker 5 (08:20):
I mean, Robert saw was a hell of a defensive
coordinator and you know, at times the defense played really well.
I mean at times too, I think they kind of
got their back broke because offensively they struggled two years
ago when Rogers wasn't there, and even when Rogers was
there at times, you know, it felt like the defense
just kind of got broken to a point. So, you know,
(08:42):
how's this going to look with Steve Wilkes, you know,
defensive coordinator who you know, a team like the forty
nine have moved on from I think there's there's a
lot of questions about this team, you know, more so
now that you don't have a guy who's a first
ballot future Hall of Famer who's playing quarterback for you.
(09:04):
And we've got some sort of issue right now with
Jonas Knox. I'm not sure if he's gone.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
To the bathroom or the computer.
Speaker 5 (09:12):
The computer, I don't think it's that important that you
need to worry about. That is something that Leaves should
be able to figure out.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
We tried yesterday. It's not working for some reason. Yeah,
I did not. You know, we reset it and everything
did not go through. But you know, I.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
Don't understand why this doesn't extend it closer to you.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
I mean, it's not that complicated.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
It would have gotten so mad about.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
It yesterday, Yeah, that it would be in the camera shot.
Speaker 6 (09:38):
And you know, I'm not trying to piss These wires
are like taped onto the computer from the desk.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
It's very finicky.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Or when you just get a longer wire, that's all
you need to do.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
I'm not trying to pissol the off.
Speaker 6 (09:52):
I don't my computers, he is, you.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Have them, just buy like a ten foot cord that'll
take a month least frustrated. And he's not even on
the stream yard stream like he's not even partaking anymore.
I mean, there he is, you know, he just you.
Speaker 5 (10:14):
Could find the cord at Best Buy, probably some sort
of you know, home depot, frizes.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
There, fries whatever the hell you guys got out there.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
The circuit city still still around or no it's not.
I don't know if to go on an adventure like that, Well,
if you.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
Told him there's a happy hour specialist, now there's.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
There's open bar best Buy.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
But I wonder what's easier that or just like a
long like backscratcher that we could just put in there
and then you can just reach over touch.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
It that works. Could do that?
Speaker 4 (10:51):
I think that's easy.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
I think it would fit the show. Yes it would.
Speaker 5 (10:58):
And then Lee would use that backscratcher and they would
have all sorts of his skin flaked on it.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Yeah well yeah, yeah, I found some flakes today. Ah yeah,
that is nasty. Can I tell you what the most
captivating part of the AFC East is for me? Since
we're talking about the Jets, it's not who's going to
win the division? It's who's going to finish last, because
it's either going to be Miami or the Jets. All right,
(11:23):
it's going to be Miami or New York to finish
his last in the AFC East, and I can't decide
who I'm going with because I think New England's going
to finish second, and then either the Jets or the
Dolphins are going to be awful this year, and I
can't figure out which direction I want to go. So
I'm really torn on that, so that that's really the one.
Like I'm I'm pretty much ready to go. As far
(11:44):
as all the other divisions go. In the NFL, I'm
not ready to reveal them yet because we'll save that
for our picks. But in the AFC East, really torn
on who's going to finish dead last?
Speaker 5 (11:55):
So what was our bet? By the way, with LeVar,
is it that New England will finish second?
Speaker 7 (12:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Or higher?
Speaker 5 (12:02):
And he thinks they're going to finish last. I think so, yeah,
I think that's what it was. Yeah, I think that's
I think that's what it was.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
I guess we'll see.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
He's been really really erratic with the with the New
York Jets, and what does he's been all over the
place with the whole stuff.
Speaker 5 (12:19):
We had that conversation about you know, shedor Sanders and
the Browns. He was claiming he wasn't gonna make the
roster at the beginning of the spring after he got drafted.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
It hitd in the summer, in the summertime.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
Now he's like, no, it's just startom after one preseason game.
It's just startom now because no one's gonna be able
to leve. I mean, it's just it's all over the place.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
The thing, the thing I love about the Jets analysis
is he was steadfast that it doesn't matter who the
quarterback or the coach is, you can't escape dysfunction. And
then they get a new quarterback and coach and he's
more optimistic. Yet the owner who's the author of the
dysfunction is still there. Literally, it like it goes against
(13:01):
everything that he's been saying, like everything, you can't escape
it no matter what. But this time it's real, all right,
this time' is gonna be different. It just doesn't make
any sense. And so I'm I don't know whether or
not it's gonna be Miami or it's gonna be New York.
Somebody's finishing dead last there between those two teams, and
that's really the issue I'm having right now. So I'll
(13:24):
let you know as soon as I'm able to come
up with that. But I got a little bit of
time here.
Speaker 5 (13:27):
I always tell me which way you bet, because I'm
I'm not gonna follow you in that regard.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
I'm probably leaning the Jets Knocks Lucks. Yeah, I'm probably
going the Jets. Yeah, I think I'm gonna go. No.
I was Miami up until the last few days, and
then the last few days have felt problematic to me.
So they A'm gonna go with the Jets to finish
(13:55):
dead last there, So congratulations Fins to the left, Fens
of the right.
Speaker 5 (14:00):
I just feel like I have more of an idea
of what the Dolphins are than I do the Jets.
So I would side with you saying it's gonna be
the Jets. Dolphins finish third, and they've got a better quarterback. Well, yeah,
he's proved himself at this point.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
You gotta stay healthy though. Yeah, if Tua gets hurt,
can I make the pick? Can we do qualifiers? I
like the Dolphins, you know, I don't.
Speaker 5 (14:23):
Have any problem with it because that's in reality how
it works. Yeah, but some people not to be named,
not on today's show have an issue with it. Yeah,
they would call that fence riding. Well there's also Yeah,
guys like Rob Parker.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Sports is a short menu. It's about wins and losses.
It's like, Rob, you were calmness for years. How did
you write articles? Did you just give him a box
score or did you tell the tale of what happened
in the game. You can't just go wins and losses
black and white on this stuff. If Tua gets injured,
the Dolphins will finish last. If not, they'll finish the third.
(15:00):
That's it pretty easy.
Speaker 4 (15:02):
Not a big delta there.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
But all right, well, hey, so we got to work with.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
We got a coach in the house. He is the
head coach of the eleventh rank to Arizona State Sun Devils.
He is Kenny Dillingham, joining us here right now on
Fox Sports Radio. Coach, thanks so much for getting up
early with us.
Speaker 7 (16:16):
Of course, I appreciate j'all having.
Speaker 5 (16:17):
Me coach kind of take me through what you thought
was the secret or not even not even secret, just
you know what brought you guys so much success last
year that you're obviously trying to build off of and
go even higher heading into this season.
Speaker 7 (16:30):
Yeah, well, I would say won we had good players.
Coaches are as important players, I think everybody knows that,
and we had good players. I think two those players
were all about the team, they were all about winning,
they were all about each other, and they had real
relationships off the field, and that connectivity, you know, transpired
(16:53):
through passion on the field, and you could see we
had really good players playing as hard as they could
every single time time they took the field. And when
you do that, you're a tough out. You're a tough
team to beat when you have good players playing as
hard as they can every snap.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Coach, after the scrimmage on Saturday, you talked about the
history of Arizona State, the history of the program and
trying to overcome that. How have you gone about instilling
that philosophy and that mindset into your players?
Speaker 7 (17:21):
Well, I just tell the guys that you know, you
get we're getting all this hype, and that's rightfully deserved
and they deserve it all, but it all means nothing.
And every other team that's gotten this hype before you
has followed to the expectations, and history tends to repeat itself.
So if we don't want to repeat history, we have
(17:43):
to do what you know hasn't been done in the
past and block everything out and worry about right now
worry about the day, the best version about today, and
treat every day like it is the super Bowl. And
if you just do that on repeat, we're gonna be
the best version of us. And whatever happens happens.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
Coach.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
You know, I think until your success last year, I
don't know how many people kind of knew about your story. Nationally,
We've got a more early morning audience. But you're a
Phoenix native, you're Alma monits.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
There is on to say.
Speaker 5 (18:11):
You've talked about always dreaming for this opportunity that you're
in right now. Just talk to me about the journey
to get to this point.
Speaker 7 (18:16):
Yeah, obviously born and raised here. I used to grow
up coming to games and watching Jake Plummer and playing catching,
and you know the tailgating area and climb we there's
a little mountain up to the stadium. You climb the
mountain to take the shortcut to get up there on
game days. So I remember those as core memories. And
you know, I just was a high school coach out here,
(18:38):
then became a coffee boy here so uh, and then
just kind of ran the racket of college football in
terms of moving around and you know, Memphis and Auburn
for the state in Oregon. But this was always a
place that had a special place in my heart because
I used to climb the mountain to get here, and
I used to tail get here, and I used to
be a fan of the stadiums, and I'm an alumni
and my wife's alumni. So this was definitely a place
(19:01):
that I always, you know, dreamt of being a part of,
not just as a fan.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
Arizona State head coach Kenny Dellingham with us here on
Fox Sports Radio. You mentioned Memphis, Auburn, also Florida State, Oregon.
What did you take from those programs that have sort
of the blue blood background that you've brought to Arizona
State to try and bring in there.
Speaker 7 (19:21):
Yeah, Memphis, I took the grit. I mean, our team
there was just gritty, like the work was not too
big for him. They were all about the work. So
I took that mindset of the work and the grit.
When I went to Auburn, I took how do you
practice with really high level players and keeping them healthy?
Speaker 10 (19:40):
Right?
Speaker 7 (19:41):
I think Gus did a phenomenal job of keeping getting
guys to the game and developing but also keeping them healthy.
When I went to Florida State. You know, we took
over the program at below and we were trying to
build it. And I took over perseverance and how if not,
you're not just going to be show up everywhere and win.
How it takes a process. And then you see coach Darvell,
(20:03):
you know, two years prior they they went undefeated, and
his process you know, worked at that point and it
still is working. And then you go I go to
Oregon and we take over a team that's winning and
having success. And I learned from Dan how to look
at things from a defensive perspective and how to practice
with a defensive mindset that's a little different than the
(20:24):
other coaches that've been with that were offense. Then you
see the fans support, and so for me, it was
I took a little bit of whether it was a
coaching experience or big picture experience, program experience, from every
little place I took and kind of molded it all
into you know what we do here.
Speaker 4 (20:44):
Well, coach, you've.
Speaker 5 (20:44):
Got one of the more refreshing styles, especially for this
era of college football, and the way you handle your team,
talk to your players. I want to talk about some
of those players, Sam Levity transferred in from Michigan.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
State, had a phenomenal year last year.
Speaker 5 (20:57):
How do you get, in your opinion, a quarterback up
to speed, so quick and operating and running your system
the way you wanted to.
Speaker 7 (21:04):
Yeah, well, Dost went the coach of Royo in terms
of his system and his ability to coach quarterbacks. But
at the end of the day, you played the position.
If you don't put in the work, it doesn't matter
who your coach is and all that doesn't matter. And
Sam showed up and he put in an amount of
work that I don't know if I've ever seen before.
(21:26):
Every single day twenty four to seven, he was obsessed
with winning the quarterback job, with being the quarterback, whether
that was with his body, whether that was in the
film room. He became obsessed with knowing everything. And I
think that's what separated him and what's taken him from
people a person that people don't know about to a
(21:46):
person who's recognized. I mean, he was top five in
in n IL sales in the last month because the
work he put in. He deserves it. And there's nothing
more gratifying as a coach than seeing kids who work
at a level that's just so elite, and then they
start to get the notoriety and they start to get
(22:06):
the benefit out of that work. There's nothing more gratifying
for me. So what was our secret and how did
we get him up to speed? He got himself up
to speed. It was him. It was his ability to
be self driven. It was his drive, it was his
want to be great. It wasn't Kenney Dillingham, it wasn't
Mos Royal, it was Sam Love It.
Speaker 2 (22:24):
Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham joining us here on
Fox Sports Radio. So we're a little over a week
away from the opener against Northern Arizona, and we've talked about,
you know, some people in the NFL they like the preseason.
They don't think we need the preseason. In college football,
you don't get one. Do you feel prepared with no
preseason game going into this year with a lot of
(22:45):
expectations for the program.
Speaker 7 (22:48):
Yeah, I mean for me, I definitely feel prepared. It's
game one without a preseason. You're trying to do these
like mock scrimmages and all these other you know, unique
things to try to simulate game day, but nothing's like
game day, and uh, until it's game days. So it's
definitely one of the games that I'm the most nervous
going into is that first game. It's because it's your
(23:11):
first game and you've had zero real game experience with
this new team. And regardless of how many returners you
have back, every year is a new year. Every dynamic
in your team's a new dynamic, and regardless of how
many people you have back, So there's definitely that piece
of unknown that goes into the first game that you know,
(23:33):
maybe with some preseason you don't have. But I feel prepared.
These guys have worked their butts off this fall camp.
We just concluded it. Today's actually the first day we're
not in fall camp mode. So yeah, I'm just I'm
excited to see these guys go out and play.
Speaker 5 (23:48):
How excited to see Jordan Tyson back. Obviously a first
team All Big Twelve receiver last year for you guys,
he's viewed as one of the best in college football.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
It's gonna be good getting back healthy.
Speaker 7 (23:57):
Oh, I mean, I got a flu deal last year,
But up until that point, I believe weeks four through
twelve he was leading the country or at least top two.
But I thought it was leading the country and those
are not eight weeks span for yards. And that's what
the testament is work Coach Ward. He's really brought in
(24:17):
to the work that Coach Hines Ward has you know,
instilled in him and what it takes to be successful.
And he's really doubled down and rung the bell and
answered the challenge that Heines is put in front of him.
And once again, same thing I said about Sam, that's
the guy who just has shown up and he's worked.
He's getting fifteen pounds this offseason. He's bigger, he's stronger,
(24:39):
he's faster. He comes up and meets with me when
I meet with Sam to learn coverages. So you know,
there's not a secret way to get better. And I
think both of those guys embody the work, and when
you embody the work, usually success follows coach.
Speaker 2 (24:56):
One of our regular guests here on the show Pete Prisco.
He's an air Zona State alum. He's also a bit
of a curmudgeon, and you have gotten him excited about
Arizona State football again. He's all fired up. He was
at the playoff game like he is back all in,
fully invested, not literally, which we've gotten on him for
(25:17):
But do you sense, though they're at ground level, that
there's a changing of the tide that you've helped and
your players have helped bring back that program to where
it was back during those Jake Plumber days.
Speaker 7 (25:31):
Oh yeah, this team has definitely absolutely rejuvenized the valley.
I mean we have wor City. It's absolutely fired up.
I mean we have seventy five hundred new season tickets.
We've sold every premium seat in the stadium. We have
a ninety seven percent season ticket or ninety six percent
season ticket renewal rate. We've already had fourteen thousand tickets
(25:56):
downloaded student tickets, not all the other tickets. Thousand student
tickets downloaded for a week one in an au Like
when you drive around the city, people of Arizona state
license plates, Arizona state flags.
Speaker 11 (26:09):
There is an unbelievable resurgence of sun double bride going
on in this city right now. And you're doing it
in a place that people retire in. I think Steve
Thwyer used to say when he was at Florida and
people worked their whole lives to move to Florida, I'm
letting you do it right now as a high school kid,
I copy paste.
Speaker 7 (26:30):
From one of the greatest coaches of all time. People
worked their whole lives to move to Arizona, right, come
do it in college.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
I was gonna say, is there a better place where
your program gets rolling just to have fun, the partying.
Speaker 4 (26:44):
The student fan base.
Speaker 5 (26:45):
I mean it's a big school too, so i'd imagine
there's a good feel, a lot of good vibes going
are on campus right now.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
For you guys.
Speaker 7 (26:51):
Oh yeah, I mean our guys get like they said
when they got here, nobody knew who our guys were.
We were three and nine. Nobody knows who our guys are.
Our guys, I mean they go out and they get
treat they get taken care of, you know, just by
people in general. They're like, Oh, that's Davian Alfard. Oh
that's been called and that's short and Tice, and that's
(27:12):
Sam Lovett whatever that is. And it's so fun to
see these guys who show it up and who said
yes when everybody was saying no. You know, we really
challenged people three years ago to say yes when we're
three and nine, Say yes when we have NCAA sanctions.
Speaker 10 (27:28):
Say yes when everybody's going to say no, and it's
going to be way more sweet when you get there.
And we're not there yet, but it's starting to become
more sweet. And the challenge is can we block out
the noise right and can we just go to work?
And you're going to leave a legacy here that lasts forever.
And anytime that you have an opportunity to do something
that's really never been done, that's special. A lot of
(27:52):
places you can go and achieve something that's been accomplished before.
We have a chance to do something that's never been done.
And in order to do something that's never been done.
Speaker 7 (28:00):
You got to work like you've never worked. And I'm
not excitement in this city is here, the fan base
is here, everything is here for us to really do
something that's never been done, we just got to go
do it.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
He is the head coach of the eleventh rank to
Arizona State Sun Devils. He is Kenny Dillingham kind enough
to spend a few minutes with us here on Fox
Sports Radio. Coach good luck against Northern Arizona, can't wait
to watch, and good luck on the entire season.
Speaker 4 (28:24):
Thanks coach.
Speaker 1 (28:26):
Be sure to catch live editions of two pros and
a Cup of Joe with Brady Quinn, LeVar Errington, and
Jonas Knox weekdays at six am Eastern three am Pacific.
Speaker 2 (28:36):
So if you are not familiar with this, for the
newbies here, Brady Quinn and I hosted a Sunday night
show here on Fox Sports Radio for years and one
of the things that we did was a segment called
Headliner Lie where we would see random, odd headlines that
would pop up and we decided, all right, why don't
we try and see who can guess these and whether
(28:57):
or not it's an actual headline or it's a lie.
And so we would take calls, we'd pit two participants
against each other. And the thing about Sunday nights was
people were really drinking hard still at that time, eight
Eastern time when we were on the air, and so
it got a little bit wild. And when Levar's not here,
we're like, all right, why don't we try and get
wild again and dust it off and bring it back.
(29:19):
So we do this periodically here on the show. So
we gave out the phone number, and we do have
a couple of participants who are waiting in the wings
to be a part of something we do every single time.
LeVar Arrington's not a part of this show. We dust
it off. It's time for this.
Speaker 7 (29:39):
STA's in a.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
Headline or piece in a lie.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
Let's go to the news desk.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
What God, No, here's Jonas Knox and Brady.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
Quinn and away we go to Clemson, South Carolina. Yes,
where Justin is listening here on Fox Sports Radio. Justin?
What's happening?
Speaker 7 (29:58):
Stuff going on? God?
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Now, Justin, I gotta ask you have to be a
big Clemson fan?
Speaker 4 (30:03):
Right?
Speaker 7 (30:04):
Oh?
Speaker 11 (30:04):
Of course pay for hosman man.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
I was gonna say, did they they might do it
this year? They might do it the SAT It's uh.
Speaker 7 (30:11):
We're going to uh the championship for sure, all right,
all right, I get that.
Speaker 2 (30:16):
I mean he's already calling the shot, So why don't
you call call it? Somebody on that uh call this shot.
Who do you want to team up with? You can
team up with Brady quinnor myself.
Speaker 11 (30:25):
I'm taking uh Dracula himself, you gentlemen.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
Yeah, wow, all right, there we go, there we go. Now,
I mean, you know, I do have some South Carolina ties,
so I'm hoping we can. Uh but that's all right,
that's sorry. Yeah, Well listen I think you know, we
we'll the cock through and through. We'll set aside our
differences here, we'll we'll focus on this. So to meet
(30:49):
Brady Quinn's partner, we got to go to Mississippi, where
Brandon is listening here on Fox Sports Radio. Brandon, what's happening?
Speaker 5 (30:57):
Hey, good morning, guys.
Speaker 7 (30:58):
I need to buy a lottery ticket if I got
in with all the thousand phone line.
Speaker 2 (31:02):
Yeah, hey, look, Hey, let's go Brandon. Let's go Brandon.
It's time.
Speaker 4 (31:11):
That's my teammate. Let's let's go Brandon.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
Yeah, let's go. All right. So we've got Brandon Mississippi.
By the way, Brandon, what are you doing? You just
cruising around? You're going to work? What's happening?
Speaker 7 (31:20):
Just pulling into the parking lot?
Speaker 8 (31:22):
Them in so early morning?
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Oh well, we appreciate what you do. Yeah, thank you,
thank you, Yeah, thank you for keeping us safe. Man.
All right, So we've got an acc versus SEC battle here.
We got Justin and Clemson, we got Brandon in Mississippi.
Here's how it works, guys. We're going to read these
headlines to each other's partner, and then you have to
tell us whether or not it's an actual headliner, it's
(31:44):
a lie. And if we are tied at the end
of this thing, we have a tie breaker question we
will throw in. So here we go. I will start
with Brandon in Mississippi, Brady Quinn's partner, Brandon, If you're ready,
I'm ready, let's go. All right, headliner Lie asked about
star pass rusher Miles Garrett's latest speeding ticket. Brown's head
(32:04):
coach Kevin Stefanski said quote, I'm okay with it as
long as he's not heading to the palm Palace like DeShawn.
Speaker 7 (32:17):
I'm gonna go with that's a lie.
Speaker 4 (32:21):
Yeah, all right, well done, let's go Brandon, awesome? All right?
Speaker 2 (32:25):
Justin and Clemson, South Caroline, are you ready?
Speaker 7 (32:29):
Yeah, I'm ready.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
Hope that was a good one. Here we go.
Speaker 5 (32:34):
Headline or lie. Two female adult film stars nearly fight
over who was supposed to poop first in the scene.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
Headline written it real, Yeah, well done, all right, you
know you know your adult films. Justin, all right, that's
my partner right there. All right, So we go back
over to Brandon in Mississippi, Brady Quinn's partner, Brandon Headline
or Lie. A Wisconsin man pleaded guilty last week to
(33:07):
contaminating a female worker's Coca Cola with drops of gorilla
super glue.
Speaker 7 (33:13):
Oh that's true, that's true.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
Yeah, that is a headline. Yes, that is a headline.
Speaker 5 (33:19):
You gotta be careful now it's headline or lie. Guys,
Jonas gets really upset. You don't say headline or lie.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
There are rules here, you know, We've got to. We
will accept that because you're law enforcement. But there are
rules here.
Speaker 7 (33:32):
All right.
Speaker 5 (33:32):
Here we go justin headline or lie, a Florida woman
was arrested with a toe bag reading definitely not a
bag full of drugs.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
It was, in fact full of drugs.
Speaker 7 (33:45):
Headline.
Speaker 5 (33:51):
Actually, Brandon, Brandon, can we just we ask you this
as a man in law enforcement? Would that throw you
off or or draw your attention? I have to ask
this question.
Speaker 7 (34:02):
Yeah, yeah it would.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
By the way, Brady, you left Florida. I mean yeah,
I just I miss watching the news and all that
comes from that. What a great stage something for everybody.
All right, So we continue on here, headliner lie. We're
all tied up at two apiece. We go back over
to Brandon Brady Quinn's partner, Brandon headliner lie. While Appearing
(34:27):
on Kelly Stafford's podcast Rams, backup quarterback Stetson Bennett said
that her husband's back issue was karma for shoving that
photographer off the stage at the Super Bowl parade.
Speaker 11 (34:40):
Headline.
Speaker 5 (34:45):
Sure, wow, I thought after that paragraph long headline been
so explaanatory. All right, here we go justin headline or Lie,
a California man was arrested after being found sleep on
a stranger's couch for the third consecutive night. Headline Take
(35:11):
that Lee, take that Lee critical moment there?
Speaker 11 (35:15):
I thought that was Lee.
Speaker 7 (35:16):
I could have assumed that was Lee.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
No, it was only two nights in row, I believe,
and he hasn't been arrested yet. So yeah, not yet,
Willie participants. All right, so we go back over to
Brandon and Mississippi, Brady Quinn's partner Brandon headline er Lie,
a fifty one year old Saint Petersburg man threatened a
landscaper with a dagger while wearing a full Jester costume.
Speaker 5 (35:42):
Live It's Florida.
Speaker 8 (35:47):
I should have said a headline, never.
Speaker 4 (35:51):
Never underestimate Florida.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
All right, justin here you go.
Speaker 5 (35:56):
Headliner Lie Ozimbic weight loss drug now being marketed for
dogs called ozem pets.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
Why that's real?
Speaker 4 (36:08):
That is real.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
You gotta be kidding me.
Speaker 7 (36:12):
There's some fat dogs and cats out there.
Speaker 5 (36:15):
Yeah yeah, where are we at score wise to too?
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Yeah, I'm I do not feel I don't feel.
Speaker 4 (36:22):
Good about this going in the end. I feel like
Jonas is gonna have a good one here.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
All right, Here we go, Randon and Mississippi headline or Live.
The w n b A is considering adding an owl
to their logo because so many people say who every
time a player's name is mentioned.
Speaker 7 (36:39):
On Why.
Speaker 4 (36:44):
That's well done, that's well done.
Speaker 2 (36:47):
Oh man, you've done well today.
Speaker 5 (36:53):
Here we go, justin in order to tie, to take
us into overtime if you if you get this right,
we'll explain the rules after the fact. Headline or lie.
A surprising study finds half of gen Z applicants not
only bring their parents to interviews, but they speak to
the hiring manager.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
Headline.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
Oh wow, that is pathetic.
Speaker 5 (37:22):
All right, my dad would slap me.
Speaker 4 (37:29):
I'm interviewing for a job.
Speaker 2 (37:33):
I wow, that is Jesus, that's pathetic. Well, thank god
for none of them and neither of you guys. All right,
so here we go. It is all tied up three apiece. Here,
we have a tiebreaker question for you. We'll explain the rules.
We're gonna read the headline. Your name is your buzzer.
First person to buzz in with their name, we'll have
(37:54):
an opportunity to guess whether or not it's a headline
or a lie. If you get it, you win. If
you miss it, you lose. Pretty simple. So I will
read the headline first again, Your name is your buzzy.
You guys ready to go? Here we go. Headline or lie?
A New York advertising executive was arrested last month after
(38:14):
he urinated off the edge of a rooftop bar onto
several victims below. Brandon in Mississippi is in first, Brandon
for the win. Headliner lie headline? That is correct.
Speaker 8 (38:28):
Let's go, Brandon, Let's go.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
Let's go.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
Br What a bit you know what? No losers in
this game though. All right, you guys were fun job.
Well done to Brandon, Brandon, appreciate your service and Justin
as well to thanks man for calling in and listening
to the show man. We appreciate Tigers. Justin go Tiger's Man.
Speaker 11 (38:54):
Yeah, I appreciate you guys.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
All right, So there we go. The latest edition of
Headliner lie here on five Sports Radio.
Speaker 5 (39:01):
So you know, that's the first one we've had in
a while where there was a lot of misses.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
Yeah, normally it's a high scoring affair. It's good to see.
Speaker 4 (39:09):
Normally it's it's kind of obvious.
Speaker 5 (39:11):
I mean, once you start rambling on for like a
paragraph or a headline, I'm like, all right, people have to.
Speaker 4 (39:16):
Know this is not real.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
Yeah, that's why I could never be an actual headline
writer like they whoever does the New York Post. I
think it's a New York Post, Like they're really good
at it. I could never do it because I couldn't
keep it short. I just wouldn't have the ability to
do it.
Speaker 5 (39:28):
It just I'm going to send to you my first
headline by the way, and there's a really fun job
description that came along with you got to click on
the link.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
But yeah, all right, well this is this is gonna be.
Speaker 4 (39:42):
Problematic, but I would wait till the break.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
Yeah, kde club Nick dark Horse, heiseman.
Speaker 4 (39:49):
I don't even think dark Horse. I think he's got
to be one of the favorites.
Speaker 5 (39:51):
I'd put him as a top five favorite, right, I mean,
Clemson should win the ACC he should have a big year,
and I would imagine in that they make a deep
playoff runt.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
I'm they're stacked, and.
Speaker 5 (40:04):
He's he's poised to not only just to I mean
with what he did last year, but also being looked
at as one of those top guys in next year's draft.
Speaker 4 (40:13):
He'll be in that conversation, so he's in for a
big year.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
He's a third behind on DraftKings, behind arch Manning nuss Meyer,
and then you've got a club Nick there with a
Jeremiah Smith, which show state.
Speaker 4 (40:24):
I was just gonna say.
Speaker 5 (40:25):
I mean, you know, usually you don't see a wide
receiver because it's so hard to do, and he's not
a secret. After his freshman year, everyone knows about him.
But you know, Ryan Dan Brian Harlan will do a
good job moving him around, and he's just I mean,
it doesn't matter if you double cover him. He's so big.
You know, I had a chance to sit down with
him probably about a couple of weeks ago, and it's
(40:47):
like he's just everything you'd look for in a wide receiver.
He's not the size of Calvin Johnson, but he's not
that far off and he just he's everything that you're
looking for.
Speaker 4 (40:59):
I mean literally everything.
Speaker 5 (41:01):
You know, he's on time, he presents himself, well, he's
got a high football IQ.
Speaker 4 (41:05):
He works his tail off, you know.
Speaker 5 (41:07):
He he tracks the football well, he's got great body control,
he's got the speed, he's got the strength. I mean,
he's everything that you're looking for. And it's funny because
you go back to that press conference. Do you remember
when they announced that that Ohio State got him, and
Ryan Dale like kind of like buckled at the.
Speaker 4 (41:20):
Podium was just like, oh it was. It was such
a sign of relief, like he knew how special this
kid is.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
And was at that time. Yeah, because you were in
Florida when he was coming out of high school.
Speaker 4 (41:29):
Yeah, it was ridiculous. It was, I mean it was
absolutely ridiculous. Some of those you know players.
Speaker 5 (41:36):
On some of that you know, in particular in South
Florida talking about you know, Broward and Dade County. I
mean you I'll put browd and Dade County, those two
counties all right in southern southeast part of Florida up
against anywhere anywhere in the country as far as a
pocket of talent. Go to the Golden Triangle, Triangle in Texas,
(41:57):
go to southern California, wherever you want, I'll put browd
in Dad count.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
Up versus anyone, and he's the best wide receiver to
come out of Ohio State recent memory correct or most talented,
and they've had a lot that.
Speaker 5 (42:09):
Yeah, I mean, I think Chris Carter, as far as
the impact he had early on in his career, would
be the first one that comes to mind. But I
mean outside of that, as good as as all the
others have been, you know, whether it's more recently Garrett Wilson,
Chris o'lave, Jackson Smith and Jig But whoever you want
to point to, I've left some out, you know, David
Boston back in my day. Yeah, I mean, it doesn't
(42:32):
matter who you're referring to. He will be the highest
of them as far as drafted. And I think even
how he you know, Marvin Harrison Jr. Like Marvin Harrison
Junior has the bloodlines and all that, and he obviously
had had the production too.
Speaker 4 (42:44):
You know, he's even a step up from that.
Speaker 2 (42:48):
Yeah, it's gonna be fun to watch, and you're gonna
be there, baby, It's gonna be there. Texas, Ohio State
Coming up wild
