it should be a factor obviously, But I mean again,

you feel good about the advice that I gave for
those out there?

But Michigan State's been in trouble since September.

I know him, so I'll ask him. But it's been
a tough situation, and with the situation in Indiana being
what it is, nobody really wants to hear about how
close they are to turning it around, if you know
what I'm saying. So if somebody can turn around that
fast for a bunch of Sun Belt guys, what's.

That would UCLA have been a good fit for him?

Yeah, well he is. He is a West Coast guy.
He went to Glendora High School. The thing about UCLA
is you need somebody that understands or will want to
or learn to deal with the bureaucracy of the UC system,
and that is cal and UCLA and that's not an

easy It's different from working at what you would call
a conventional football program, so that part of it makes
it a little more. But you know, he worked at
Oregon State, which doesn't have all the resources.

In the world, and he's from the area. The guy
at San Diego State is really impressive, Sean Lewis.
Speaker 6 (05:21):
I don't know if he would leave because he's got
it going pretty well there, but he's indeed getting.

A lot of looks for that UCLA job.

That'd be pretty interesting considering he was moved on from
at Colorado for perfect timing and then he gets a
head coaching job of San Diego State. Now might end
up at a Big ten head coaching job.

Yeah, he would deserve it. I mean he's he's a
really impressive coach. The thing about Sean Lewis that really
impresses me is you know him. I mean, he was
with Dino Babers. It's at Syracuse and he's not necessarily
a guy that is you wouldn't have considered him a
full on head coach. He was more like an offensive

genius type and he was at Kent State doing that
and they talked about how you excuse.

All I'm saying is he was seen as an offensive
genius and a guy who calls plays and uses really
quick pace. And San Diego State his second his first year,
they said we're going to be as tech fast and
all this stuff, and they had what it was his name, O'Neil,
the quarterback who ended up in Indiana, and they weren't good.

And then this year they got their elite pass rusher
Trey White to stay, and they have an elite corner
Chris Johnson who's going to get drafted to stay, and
they've just played defense. And it's really hard for a
coach who's a play caller and known as an offensive
guy to just change that and become completely and totally

a defensive guy, thinking about all three phases of the
football team.

And they've done a great job at San Diego State
this year.

They have a big game against New Mexico, who's been
a huge surprise, maybe one of the great miracles in
college football this year, what Jason Eck has done. That's
another hot coach people are going to be looking to hire.
I don't know if he'll leave, but we'll see. But
I really I've been pressed with Sean loewe Us and
he's like six' eight and he's got.

A he's bald and he has a, beard and then
everybody on his staff is bald and has a.

Beard so it's an interesting. Deal BUT i would like.

THINK ucla should do to a certain degree WHAT usc,
does which is recruit. Locally and the fact that they're
so not local that their interim, Coach Tim, skipper who's
done a great job this, YEAR i, think in very
tough circumstances and he's been very. Positive But Tim skipper

had to show the whole team him a video about
what the rivalry BETWEEN usc AND ucla is all, about
and the victory bell and all the different traditions and
all the different names Like Troy aikman And Rodney pete
and stuff throughout the rivalry so everybody could understand it
because his team has no, clue which is sad but

also a good idea By. SKIPPER i think BOTH usc AND,
ucla AND usc has corrected that with THE gm they,
HIRED i, guess BUT i think they both need to
recruit locally and make that more of a thing here
in Southern california for their own. Success you don't have
to go too far to find good players around, here

a regional. DEAL i just Think Sean lewis is, impressive
and he works already at A california state school different
from THE uc system but certainly has its, frustrations so

think that's sort of maybe nationally people don't understand. That
they SEE, usc they see the, prestige but there's been
a lot of disappointment just surrounding the program, recently and
it doesn't feel like it's getting. Better it just feels

like it's the same result against these teams and what
it looked like Against.

they are a complete and total. Mirage they improve this,
year there's no doubt about. It but that doesn't mean
much if you're going to celebrate yourself as a blue,

michigan AND i know they Beat michigan this. Year but
if you're going to put yourself on a level With
michigan And Ohio, state then you have to spend money
like that.

Usc spends a lot of money on their football. Program
they have a gigantic nil. Budget they have a huge
budget for their head coach and their, staff and they
don't perform when it really comes down to it like
a playoff. TEAM i, mean they've never been in the
playoff conversation only, once as we talk about all the

time In Lincoln riley's first, year Against utah and they
played in The pac twelve champion and they got blown
out Against, utah wasn't. Close Caleb williams got kind of.
Hurt he left the field. Crying and then after That
Lincoln riley, said this is the worst will ever. Be
everybody has to, understand you, know this is the worst

will ever be and we're going to recruit and we're
going to get. Better and that was actually the best
they've ever.

Just the whole thing surrounding the organ game was. Embarrassing if,

playoff but not only did they not. Win they weren't

out it looks nothing like any press Release i'd ever,
seen and had created bulletin board material for an already fiery,

ad out on the field.

field they'd have a conniption. Fit they'd be talking about

you want to be, cocky you want to be, arrogant
you want to have if you're going to have a
guy wear kicker shoes and go out there and Dupe
northwestern with some bush league fake punt, play and then
you go out there and lay an egg on special
teams on like seven occasions in your biggest game of the.
Year it feels pretty terrible for, people knowing how much

money has spent On Lincoln, riley knowing how much hype
is surrounding the. Program the real truth is they don't
want to develop their offensive and defensive fronts to the
level that they need to to be great and compete
with teams Like oregon Or Ohio state or go on

kind of sad because it's just it's like watching a
rapper or, something somebody running around talking and popping off
but having no real foundation to stand.

expect them to embarrass themselves like they did off the

they pick the ball off and he goes over to
The organ sideline and tries to get the ball back

a bunch of other coaches and programs and everything else out,
there like you get to go out there and see
How Mike loxley does it In maryland or whoever else
you want to talk, about AND i think when you do,
that you start to see that a lot of, these
at least the best coach's best, programs they have an.
Identity and that's been one of the things THAT i

feel like has been missing since that kind Of Pete carroll,
era at least that. Run it's like es he is
constantly trying to find the. Identity AND i don't know
that they hired a coach that understands how to build
that because he inherited that At, oklahoma which led to
a lot of that success that he really never could
get to a national, championship but he got, them you,

he's been two and one in bowl. Games he's never
won a conference, championship and the highest finish he's made
is eleventh in the final. Rankings COACH b in the
last four years is thirty four and, seventeen also two
and one in bowl, games never won a conference championship
and the highest he's finished his. Twelfth one of those

coaches is being looked at to sign a hundred million
dollar contract in most. Coming isn't that? Funny the other signed,
one and now it's, like had he not signed the,
contract they'd move on from, him, Right AND i think
you can guess who's.

the state of college football and say we've got a

over the, years AND i know he's changed and he's
done a lot better, job and you can't say he

BUT i don't understand the excitement that surrounds, him knowing
him and watching him over the, years not really knowing
much about how much he's. Changed BUT I i that

don't really have an identity because two thirds of the
rest of their team is trying to figure that, out

You and all that being, SAID usc has vastly improved
this year from last. Year but when you spend one
hundred million dollars on your coach and you hype yourself

bunch OF usc media members running around waving the flag
around uh and they go out there and lay an

egg in the biggest game of the, year and you
play on discipline and you look exactly like people think
you're supposed to look that are, skeptical then you deserve
all the criticism you. Get AND i don't need an
open letter from a media guy for god's sakes apologizing
what a what a weenie.

Petros what is there any coaches out there that resonate with?
YOU i, MEAN i know there's always like we've brought
up main main, names right and the guys who who
are hot out there in the coaching. Surgeon is there
is there a coach that resonates with you that may
not be getting the type of.

Coverage there's a ton of.

COACHES i think that that that could figure it. OUT i,
MEAN i Like Pat, FITZGERALD i think some but he
needs to Hire Pat, fitzgerald not a Hired Pat fitzgerald
AT usc fifteen years.

AGO i like. ANYBODY i, mean it's not THAT i think.

He would be able to integrate into that type of you,
know THE Usc Yeah west coach.

Culture here's a one hundred million. Dollars here's a bunch
of money for your. Roster here's A, gm here's all
THE la high school football. Coaches here's your us he,
hat here's your Big Mercedes benz From Fletcher. Jones drive
around and talk to, people build your team.

THAT i, mean you're going to be granted a thousand.
Resources and If Lincoln riley had an ounce of personality
and would go around and be dynamic and shake some
hands and kiss some, babies he'd be a lot more
popular than he is, now even with just the resume
that he.

Way he's kind of an, introvert and he's sort of
uncomfortable and obviously, defensive and he hasn't done it. Good
i'm not asking people to be as dynamic As Pete.
Carroll but a lot of these coaches are a lot
more dynamic Than lincoln.

at Least Clay helton was a more engaging person and

a lot of coaches that would work AT usc that
would do What brady is, saying which has developed all three.

a conventional football program, so that part of it makes
it a little more. But you know, he worked at
Oregon State, which doesn't have all the resources.

at San Diego State is really impressive, Sean Lewis.

I don't know if he would leave because he's got
it going pretty well there, but he's indeed getting.

impresses me is you know him. I mean, he was

And then this year they got their elite pass rusher
Trey White to stay, and they have an elite corner
Chris Johnson who's going to get drafted to stay, and
they've just played defense. And it's really hard for a
coach who's a play caller and known as an offensive
guy to just change that and become completely and totally

coaches is being looked at to sign a hundred million
dollar contract in most. Coming isn't that? Funny the other signed,
