Eastern time six o'clock Pacific right here on Fox Sports Radio.
And we will do so with the man himself, Jeff Schwartz.
Good morning, I'm glad to be here, I'm glad to
talk sports. And hey, we're one day closer to the
Hall of Fame game, which we will have plenty of
wagers for you find folks who want to gamb on
(00:47):
such an event. By the way, I reached out to
uh Steve Feazick, Fox sports radio host, also one of
the best sports bettors on planet Earth. He's with straight
out of Vegas here, and I reached out to him
yesterday to see if there are prop bets available for
the Hall of Fame game. He can't find any as
of yet, so so I don't I don't see any
(01:09):
of the prop market being lively right now, I don't
see that happening, but that doesn't mean that, you know, uh,
you know, twenty four hours before the Hall of Fame game,
some of the sports books go, you know what, why
don't we try and take some money here? You know,
it's a Thursday night, it's a Thursday night in August.
Why don't we try and take some poor sucker's money.
If they're really that much of a degenerate wanting to
bet on props at the Hall of Fame game, there
(01:31):
will be there must be something happening at some point
like well, well if not, if not telling you, I'm
leaning towards the Steelers uh to uh to win that game,
and I'll take I'll take the point, so I'll let
the point I should say. So look there's there's there's
there'll be a bet on everybody. Yeah, and and look
if it gets to that point, I'm now, I don't
(01:51):
know if you're familiar with this, but on my highly
rated weekend overnight show, and by highly rated on my
I mean not rated at all, we do a segment
called the bet Monster all just make up props like
that that is a possibility, like if if, if we
can't find any action on this. I know you've got
an niche that you need to scratch. I will make
up props for you, Jeff Schwartz, and I can't pay you,
(02:12):
but we can at least, you know, have some fun
with it and make some picks. Well, you're you assume
i'd win those bets by that, by that comment, by
paying me. We'll see. But yes, we we make up
profits all the time in my podcast. I I very
much enjoy their fun. Man very much enjoy fake props.
I feel like sometimes they're better than the props are
offered at the sports book. Yeah, it's a good point. Um, Yeah,
(02:33):
you know there's there was a prop that we did
on my show once where um we asked, you know what,
would there be an object thrown onto the field during
the Patriots Bills game? Yes or no? And the object
that we're referring to is the the Billdo you know
the the the toy that was thrown out on the
(02:53):
field and it happened again. So for anybody to bet
yes on it happening a second time, they got paid out,
big monster. I had not. Yes. What's better to say
that on radio than the other word? It is? Yeah,
it absolutely is. But again that is a conversation for
as we get closer up to the Hall of Fame
(03:15):
game coming up on Thursday. Now this conversation though, all right, Um,
there was a report that came out according to Mark Ryan,
he's a radio host of sports SOCC radio host. He
said the following via Twitter that, per a reliable source,
Clemson and Florida State have reached out to the SEC
about joining the conference. The SEC was concerned that streaming
(03:39):
numbers for Clemson and Florida State don't bring what Oaklahoman,
Texas do Notre Dame is the only quote free agent
left that would quote add to the pot. So again
that according to Mark Ryan, who's a sports talk radio
host in the South, and so there are some people
that also, you know, pushed back on that and said,
there's nothing to it. Clemson, Florida State in the s
(04:00):
you see, uh, nothing to that whatsoever. But the fact
that this is even a possibility, the fact that we're
even at at this point just screams of we might
be entering a new day in the world of college football.
And I don't think it's a day that a lot
of people are gonna like. And I think It's a
borderline catastrophe if you were a traditionalist in the world
(04:22):
of college football. I think the game's gonna start changing
pretty quick here. It isn't. I didn't. I don't believe
that report. By the way, UM, no offense to you,
said Mark Ryan, Right, yeah, I mean it just normally
that those those reports come from people that break the
news more often than not. Um, I didn't, and it
(04:44):
was refuted, right, you know, immediately from Clemson, and at
least on Clemson side, don't know what the four state
side is. So the conference realignment stuff absolutely sucks. It's
not it's not fun. It's not fun at all. However, Jonas,
we have to accept it's happening, right, and we have
to adapt to the new world of college sports, and
(05:07):
the new world of college sports eventually will get to
either to either four mega conferences and it might not
happen now, right. I'm a Pack twelve guy. I've covered
this now for a week. Is this happened? I was
a pacto media day. I've talked about this every day
on my radio show, The Pac twelve. You know, there's
rumors a pactol will will have to take the you know,
four the Big twelve teams and then you know, the
(05:28):
Big Ten takes two of them and they see things
come of them. There actually doesn't have nothing has to happen, right,
tex Oklahoma go the SEC, the Big twelve at the
four best of American Athletic Conference teams, and we stay
we stay put, right, there's no need to panic. However,
I can make the argument that you know, the new
PACTOL commissioner, who is a is a savvy businessman, sees
(05:49):
what's happening right now, decides that he needs to, you know,
to add four teams to the conference or he needs
to partner with the Big Ten. And then then this
starts the the either four super conferences or to mega
conference basically the eight a f C in the NFC, right,
two big conferences of twenty teams, twenty two teams whenever
you want have twenty four teams, and we become the
(06:09):
NFL center where we have divisions and you basically play
all your games in that division to me in that conference,
and then you know, in the playoffs you end up
having to play someone from the other conference. Essentially, that's
where we're going. And yes, I don't like it. I
you know, tex Oclahoma are making this purely for money. Um,
it's not a decision that Texas, in my opinion, is
(06:31):
making for to win football games. I mean, I think
they can pretend they are, but they have not won
a lot of football games recently. They have not been
the power that they think in their heads they are,
and making this move will make them now from the
second best team in the Big twelve to the fifth, sixth,
seventh in a given year in the SEC. Um. Uh,
(06:52):
they got, they got. They were savagely mocked in the
in the Texas or Senate yesterday or House or one
of one of you know, one of them said we're
not uh you know, I have the quote right here
just to make sure I have this accurate. Um. The
Texas president said, we've been winning, just not like just
not like we'd like to And the state senator responded
(07:13):
with three and seven against the Horned Frogs. Perhaps you
rather lose Alabama than TC. So, like, it's just so
so if it's pure money grabbed Oklahoma, I think football whizzle.
Will we find the SEC. But you know they're not
gonna they're not gonna make the playoff as much and
they're not gonna win as much. But nonetheless it just
feels I I hate saying the tradition of college sports
(07:34):
right because the the tradition is unpaid players, you know,
doing things for free, um, you know, and and that
system has now changed for the good. But it is,
it is we're losing that tradition of the conferences of
your if your in state rivals, if you're Oklahoma, Oklahoma State,
you know, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma fans want to keep
bedlam that the game's over with, it's done. The Oklahoma
(07:55):
has no incentive to play Okahoma State ever again, ever again.
They're gonna have an in game conference schedule most likely,
there's no reason. Almost in every year. Yeah, it's it sucks, man,
And I think there's a lot And I don't even
think that we've we've encountered all the people and schools
and places that are going to suffer because of some
of these moves. And I get that it's part of
(08:16):
the part of the new college football landscape and it's
how it is. Look I I didn't and I've said
this on the year before. Man, when I think Maryland,
I'm sorry, I think a sec I'm sorry. Like I
I don't I don't think Big ten when I think Nebraska,
I think Big twelve. And Nebraska is in close proximity.
They're in, you know, a Big ten countries, so to speak.
They're pretty close to being a Big ten school. I
(08:39):
just still it's hard for me to wrap my mind around.
It's same with look at Florida State Syracuse and I
think Syracuse and basketball I think Big East, like a
Big East tournament. So a lot of that stuff is
hard for me to wrap my brain around. And the
traditionalist to me who grew up loving college basketball, college football,
I don't like what we're at, but it is. It
(08:59):
is a reality of the situation. And on the Oklahoma front,
Oklahoma's president comes out and says, well, you know, we
weren't happy with Foxes eleven am kickoffs, so you know
that's it was part of our money. Dude. First of all,
shut up, all right. You you took the TV deal. Yes, yeah,
(09:19):
like you took the TV deal because of the money
that came along with it. And now because you're getting
pushed back from people in your own state because you're
siding with Texas, your rival to go join the SEC
and a money grab. Now you're gonna use Foxes eleven
am kickoffs as the excuse get out of here. By
the way, they also in the sec of course, of
(09:40):
course you're gonna play needs games when you play Missouri
or South Carolina. South Carolina plays listen, South Carolina plays
so many nine am games out here on the West coast.
Like this idea that, oh, well, the eleven am kickoffs,
those those were detrimental to our program. Get out of here, dude,
(10:01):
then don't take the money. It's the same thing when
David Shaw came out and he was complaining about Fox's
early kickoffs. It's like, da should dude, you make a
good amount of money, and where do you think some
of that money comes from? The TV deal you've got
with Fox. So here's here's the thing about the packs
off conference TV deals. Right, um, again, I cover the
(10:21):
conference for living. I know why David Shaw is upset
about it, right, It kind of puts his team in
an advance disadvantage. But but I'll tell you what organ
has that same situation when they play in Columbus. Right,
they play Ohio State Week two and the game is
at twelve eastern right kickoff, and guess what the organ
coaches do not care. They're they're gonna embrace it. They're
(10:42):
gonna get after it. They're not gonna get pay, at
least not publicly. I've asked them. They're not. They're they're like,
we'll be fine, we'll figure it out. I feel like
the best programs just to figure it out right because
that's the schedule that they're given, and they don't make
excuses for the time they're playing. And we saw last
year by the way Arizona State and USC can kick
off the year and nine and the better the game
was better than I thought it'd be. Right as he
(11:03):
came back at the very end, those coaches made no
excuses for playing early. Um, And it's just that's the
schedule that that's a your deal. The pack twelve is
not good enough to complain about scheduling right now. Right
if we become better, that we can complain about scheduling.
But the best kind of figure it out. They don't
make excuses for it and then make it happen to
Oklahoma making excuses for eleven. Eleven a m is one
(11:25):
hour before twelve. It's not that bad. You'll be you
can wake up, play the game and get over it. Um,
they get it for money and playing in simple they
know it, we all know it, and it doesn't The
question becomes, you know, how much doesn't help the sport?
And you can make the argument that who cares about
helping the quote unquote sport, right, especially when the anti
(11:46):
double A doesn't help the sport much in themselves. Um,
this will lead to a quicker dismantle of the anti
double a, which it has already been talked about. Basically,
and I think we are moving into a mall. We're
going to see more of a pro model. Players are
gonna get salaries, most likely at some point I think
under contract at some point, I think, um, And we're
(12:08):
gonna see more of a minor league atmosphere where players
are paid a salary at some point. Not not now
and now. It just happened, but you know, ten fifteen
years from now, the model is gonna look a lot different. Yeah,
it's uh, just it's just a changing landscape, man. It
just it is what it is at this point. I
just some of the excuses that are being made for
(12:28):
the decisions. It's like this, this is about money. This
is an opportunity to cash in and capitalize on on
getting involved in the SEC, which is the cream of
a crop of college football, and now we just wait
to see what else changes. The thing about it, Jonas
is that it just feels unnecessary, right, like, like like they're
making a ton of money. Texas is the number one
(12:50):
revenue athletic department in the country, so they were making
a ton of money. And this doesn't make Oklahoma or
Texas better at their like it makes sure it's tougher, right.
SEC is an outstanding conference all about basketball, baseball, softball,
like all the big sports, track and field a little bit, right, um,
And it just makes Texas and Oklahoma have to work
(13:14):
harder to be good at sports. And maybe that's what
they want. Maybe they want to be able to recruit
the South a little bit easier now. But that's kind
of a bad argument, Oregan. Little organ eug can recruit
the South five. I mean, we we pull players out
of Texas in the South all the time, like, so
I just think it's it doesn't help their athletic progress
besides the money, which they already make a lot of money.
So it's I think it's I think they're gonna regret
(13:37):
Texas more than anyone who will regret doing this. I
think I don't think it's gonna help Texas at all. Again,
Oklahoma will be fine until Lincoln Riley leaves and we'll
figure out obviously what happens there. Yeah, but for Oklahoma
softball is really good. Does playing in the SEC help them? Maybe?
But I don't. I just so the the winning part
of this, which which ultimately in the end can make
(13:59):
you the most money. They're not gonna win any more
of this because of this. Yeah, it's I think I
think it's gonna backfire. I think they're going to regret
the move. But we'll see, wait and see how that
plays out. He's Jeff Schwartz on Jonas Knocks. This is
out Kicked the Coverage here Fox Sports Radio. Coming up
next year on fs ARE, we're going to find out
from our insider what quarterback could be on the move,
(14:21):
very very soon before the season even gets going. We'll
have that for you next here. It's out Kicked the
Coverage right here Fox Sports Radio. Be sure to catch
live editions of out Kicked the Coverage week days at
six am Eastern three am Pacific. Right now, kind enough
to join us here, it is Albert Breer, the mm
QB senior NFL reporter, always kind enough to join us
(14:44):
every single week here on Fox Sports Radio and Albert
Jonas and Jeff how are you? I'm good, you guys
doing good. I know, I'm just curious. It obviously is
game week in the NFLO. We got the Hall of
Fame game coming up in a couple of days. Have
you told your loved ones that you'll see him in
February yet? Because it's that was like that was like
two weeks ago. I mean, I mean, I think I
(15:05):
think Jeff can relate with this. I mean, because I
started doing this. My summer ends like middle of a lot,
so uh so yeah, I mean once I once I
get that first training camp, summers basically over. It doesn't
so in the preseason games? Has it been nice to
feel like training camp as normal again? Fans are back,
uh you know, reporters and people that cover the teams
(15:28):
are allowing, you know, allowed to watch the whole practice again.
And it does feel like things are back to normal now,
doesn't it. Yeah? You know what you have, it's good
to be face to face with people in general, you know,
not just for a football standpoint, but um, you know
you you sort of realize what you lose. And I
think we all learned how to adapt over the last
year and you know, use our phones more and zoom
(15:48):
with people and just find different, you know, ways to communicate.
And you know, I just think like the face to
face interactions priceless, you know. Um, and so be back
around people one is nice and then too, I mean,
it is a lot different than last year. You know.
I did, uh, I think I did about seven training
camps last summer, and there was really no access, which
(16:13):
in one way defeated the purpose. But I wanted to
get out and just see because I thought it was historic,
you know, and hopefully we'll never be in a position
like that again. Um. And it really was weird. You know,
the football looked normal, but everything around the football is
so different. Coaches and masks and the way the facilities
were locked down, and so seeing these places back open
and you know, getting back to what it normally is,
(16:35):
which is sort of a celebration of football being back
is really cool. Albert Brier MMQB, senior NFL reporter, joining
us here on Out Kicked the Coverage, Jonas knocks Jeff
Shorts with the Here on Fox Sports radio. Um, so
we know Frank Rank makes the announcement yesterday Carson Wentz
is going to have the surgery and he's gonna be
out five to twelve weeks. Um. That being said, what's
(16:59):
the plan is it? Is it just wait until he
gets back or is there a move potentially being made
at the quarterback position by Indianapolis? Yeah, you know, I
I talked with Christaller, the gm um there the other
day about this, and I think they at least want
to give their young guys a look. Um. And so
you know, drafted Jacobison out of Washington, who's super talented,
(17:22):
let's never quite hit his potential for a number of
different reasons. Um, he's going into a second year. They
drafted him a longer at a Texas So, um, you know,
Chris did say to me, like, we want to give
those guys a good hard look and so, UM, I think,
you know, over the next week or so, they'll probably
take a look and get those guys as any reps
(17:42):
as they can and get those guys out in a
preseason game, and my guests would be after that, they'll
probably reassess, um, you know, and then maybe look at
what else is out there, and I think the obvious one,
um that that a lot of people are gonna look
at because of the relationship that Frank has with him
as Nick Fowles. I just don't think you can do that, Carson.
(18:05):
You know what I'm doing, Like he's not good well,
I mean, but if you need somebody who can come in,
who's played a lot, who knows your offense, who isn't
going to need a ton to get ready for the season, like,
he wouldn't make some sense, right, Jeff. And I mean,
and the reason I wouldn't do it is I just
think that would be so weird. I just don't know
(18:26):
that would be right to do to Carson, you know
what I mean, Like because here he is and um,
you know that whole thing from two and seventeen sort
of followed him around and he hasn't been able to
get completely right, and now you're gonna like the sort
of I mean, it's almost like the ghost of Nick
Foles has been chasing him around to some degree, and
now you put Nick Fowles in the quarterback room with them.
(18:48):
And I'm not saying to have a bad relationship, but
I just I mean, because of the history there, I
think that'd be a little awkward. But and then you know,
I think there are other names too. Um, you know,
the unfortunate thing is like I think a name who
big sense to be Gardner Minshew, But I just can't
imagine the Jaguards with help division rival. Look, Nick Foles
is not good at quarterbacking, and so if you if you,
(19:10):
if you trade for him, you might as well just
play Jacob Eaton. I don't think it's gonna be any
good anyways. I don't. I don't really like. I don't.
I don't like. I feel like people just haven't just
stopped watching him after he won the Super Bowl. Um,
that that just makes And and you mentioned the quarterback
dynamic in that room of why it makes no sense
with the match of personalities. But when you talk to
Ballard the other day, did you get a sense of
(19:32):
kind of dejection as far as wasting a year development?
Because I thought this year was important for Wends just
to get back to being an average quarterback. I think,
you know, if we thought he was gonna making a
jump to being an elite again, probably unlikely really for
the rest of his career, But this year's kind of ruined, right,
I mean, even if he gets back in five weeks,
which feels very unlikely, he's gonna be off of foot surgery,
(19:53):
he's gonna have miss standing camp. He's gonna need, you know,
multiple weeks to get back into swing of things. They
have a very tough schedule to start to see. It
feels like a wasted year of development for Carson Wentz.
And I mean that's a thing, Um, Jeff, is that
like a foot injury? And I mean they're like, it's
like a hamstring or back injury, Like you don't want
(20:14):
to rush it, and if you do rush it, it it
probably won't go away the whole year, you know, And
so they'd be really careful with this thing to begin with.
And you're right, like that means I mean certainly going
to miss the rest of camp and then probably going
to meet miss at least the beginning of the season. Um.
You know, I when I talked to Chris about it,
it was I think it's disappointed for Carson. Um, it
(20:36):
feels badly that this has happened to Carson again. Um,
but you know, he's pretty he's a pretty positive guy.
And I you know, like the one thing that they
the one thing they do have going for them there
is they've had such a just jacked up quarterback situation
over the last four years, the four years that Frank
has been there. Um, you know, going from Andrew luck
(20:58):
which I mean generational core that pross that coming out
of Stanford and had a really saw it first five
or six years in the league, to like the sudden
retirement to Jacoby were Set getting thrown in there on
the fly to Philip Rivers, which everybody knew that was
like a stop gap for a year or two. And
you know, now taking a flyer on Carson wentz Um.
You know, the one thing they do up going for
(21:19):
them is they've been able to remain competitive through all
of that, and so I do think that there's a
confidence in the building that they're good enough now around
the quarterback where you know, whoever they put out there,
they'll make it work. But they do feel badly for Carson,
there's no question about that. Albert Brier MMQB, senior NFL
reporter joining us here on Fox Sports Radio, Jonas knocks
(21:42):
you have shorts here on I'll kicked the coverage. Albert,
you're on a training camp tour. I know you were
in Green Bay, Um, how was that situation? You know,
I don't think like like I think they're like where
Seattle is, which is hopeful, um that this stuff resolves itself.
And um, you know, I I think, you know, there's
(22:04):
there's not much to indicate that they know exactly how
all this is gonna go over the over the next
four or five months. Um. You know, I think Aaron's
press conference caught them a little off guard. Um, but
he's sort of an unpredictable person to begin with, and
they've been managing these sorts of things for for for
a while now. UM, So you know, I think the
(22:26):
goal all along was let's just get him back in
the building and we'll figure out the rest later. And
they do believe that they've got a championship roster. Um.
And you look at the team. I mean, there's so
many guys that are right in the prime of their
careers and Davante Adams, Aaron Jones, David back tr E,
da Darius Smith, a Rian Amos Ja Alexander It's a
(22:48):
loaded roster has been to the championship game two years
in a row. And so I think for for Goudacusta
Lafloor one of the biggest things um throughout, you know,
and being so steadcast we're not moving him, We're not
moving and we're not moving him. Was knowing where they
were from a roster standpoint, and like at least finding
a way to fix the problem in the here and
(23:09):
now so they could go compete for a championship because
they certainly didn't think Jordan's love was ready to take
them there, and obviously Aaron Rodgers plenty capable of it.
We're seeing some early reports out of San Francisco and
Chicago that both Trey Lance and Justin Fields are doing
a great job. I've contended all along. I think both
guys start earlier than than later. Do you think that
(23:31):
we've seen any movement as far as getting reps with
the ones pretty soon with any of those quarterbacks, you know?
And I've you know, like talked to both those teams
over the last couple of weeks, and it's just it
feels to me, Jeff, like this situation, these situations are
a little different than what we normally see. And you know,
(23:51):
normally the teams that take quarterbacks in the first round,
they're normally bad teams, right, And this year was unique
and that you had. Three teams instead have been in
the playoffs very recently in Chicago, San Francisco, and New England,
um taking quarterbacks high, and I think that that's what
differentiates those situations from what we normally see where guys
(24:12):
just get thrown out there and um, you get the
year of development and get to start and take their lumps.
Like you know, I think San Francisco believes it's in
a position to compete for a championship. At Chicago thinks
they have a playoff roster, and so the idea of
going through the ups and downs that you need to
go through with a rookie quarterback isn't all that appealing
to them. The other part of it, I think in
(24:33):
both cases, as they realize that once you know, once
they go with Justin Fields in Chicago Trey Lanson San Francisco,
you can't go back, you know, like, once you go
what what, once you take that step forward, you're going
with that guy and locking in with that guy. Whereas
you know, the Niners start with Garoppolo or the Bears
start with Andy Dalton, they can always pull that lever
(24:57):
five games into the season, nine games in the season.
So I'm with you those like you know, I think
both those guys have done a really nice job. Both
those guys are workers, and I know that showing in
those buildings, um. And both those guys know how to
be rookies, you know, like they're They both have a
good way about them and are handling all of that well.
But I think just because of where those two teams
(25:18):
are from a roster standpoint, and because both those teams
have been in the playoffs recently, I think they're going
to at least start the season with their veteran quarterbacks
Albert Brier, amongst other things. Ohio State alum. So I
gotta ask you your thoughts on Quinn yours, who's leaving
high school early. He's the number one quarterback prospect coming
(25:39):
up next year, but he's leaving a year early at
a high school because he wants to be able to
take advantage of some of the name, image and likeness opportunities.
And look, from a talent standpoint, everything you've read and
here and see, he's got everything you could possibly ask for.
Let me just ask you from a traditionalist standpoint. We
were talking about how the Super Conference, the SEC schools,
(26:00):
you know, moving and going other places. How it kind
of takes away from the tradition we're used to when
you see that name, image and likeness is now turned
into a guy foregoing his final year of high school
to be able to take advantage of it at your
Almormond or at Ohio State. How does that land with you?
I mean, this has been going on in basketball for
(26:21):
a while, hasn't it. Yeah? Yeah, I think, I mean
like it's been. I mean and look like I sort
of Hey, I think it's good that some of the
money that's been fund over the schools and the coaches
forever as going to the players. That's a good thing. Um,
you know, be I just I just look at this
and I kind of compare it to like when Christian
(26:42):
McCaffrey skipped his Bowl game and people got all upset
and everything else. Now it's like, you know, common the
guys will do that. Um. I just think the fact
that these kids have more opportunities and more information and
are treating it as a business because it is their
career years. You know, if he's that good a player,
it very well could be you know what, you might
(27:04):
wind up making money for a few years later. Um.
I think that's a good thing too. And you know,
I remember talking to Eric Winston about this, and he
was the president of the unions at the time, the
NFL p A, and I was asking him about, you know,
Christian McCaffrey and Leonardport, those guys who skipped that first year, UM,
skip their bowl games, UM to get ready for the draft.
(27:25):
And you know, Eric said to me, He's like, I
don't think like the idea, I don't think that like
it's necessarily the right thing or the wrong print things
for these guys to skip their bowl game. I'm just
glad they had the information, and I'm just glad that
they're able to make these decisions. They're able to nobody's
pulling the wall over their eyes. They're able to take
(27:45):
a look at the value of playing in that game
and the value of skipping it, and they're able to
make a decision for themselves. And you know, part of
that is, you know, your teammates. Part of that is
your coach, is part of that is the people that
you're with. Like, so, you know, I just think, like
the idea that these guys have opportunity and they've got
the information to make smart decisions and make good business decisions. Um.
(28:09):
I think that that's a really good thing, and so
it would be interesting to see how he goes. Like
I I've uh, you know, I know, um he uh.
I mean, you guys are familiar with the term Texas
red shirt, right, so I think he's old enough to
be UM a college freshman anyway. UM. But I do
think it's good that, you know, he was able to,
you know, have the opportunity to make money, UM and
(28:33):
leverage his accomplishments as an athlete, and he had the
information to make the right decision for him. How worried
are you about organ coming to Columbus and women in
the Shoe the first home loss for for the Ohio.
I don't know, I mean, Jeff, I don't know that
you guys have been to a place like the Shoe
(28:54):
at night. So, I mean, I don't know they have.
I don't know they haveing like that. I don't know.
I don't know that they have. But that's right. It's
a new game. Yeah, it's a new nine body at
all the coaches. The coaches aren't worried about that. Organism't
have school to the end of September. Man, they'll be
up at five am. Prepared for that game. I'm not
worried about that. I'm worried about our quarter Are you worried? Yeah,
(29:17):
because I'm worried about a quarterback situation. If we had,
if we had a better situation quarterback, I feel excited.
But that's just terrifying to me because, well, I think
both teams. I mean, Ohio State doesn't have a quarterback
on the roster who's thrown out the college pass. Yeah,
we have one that's thrown a lot of them, and
they're typically not very accurate. So that's the problem. By
the way, didn't didn't know Ohio State open up the
(29:39):
season against Oregon State a couple of years ago. I
want to say that they did. Yeah, yeah, in organ
State did Organ State? Organs had too like long rushing
touchdowns was a very Yeah, that was that was the year.
That was the year and in Ohio States scored like
sixty three. But I think before we can scored it
was like it was weird. Yeah, that was the first
(30:00):
sign like, oh crap, the defense isn't very good and
that became the whole theme of the year and Greg
Siana wound up losing his job over it. But yeah,
I can distinctly remember that game because it's like one
of those where your way up but you start to
see you like the cracks and you're like, is this
real or are they taking their foot off the gas?
(30:22):
And yeah, it turned out that it was very, very real, Albert.
And the only reason I remember it is because I
was with my um then fiance now wife. We were
in Hawaii and she comes out of the room and
she says, what are you doing up? And I was like,
I've never seen a college football game at six am,
and I just I had to watch. I swear to god,
I had to see it. I just want to see
(30:42):
how this works. And it was. It was phenomenal. Game
over by nine am and you can go on with
the rest of your day. It was great. That's gotta yeah,
that's that's gotta be incredible. I mean, I'm I got
an East Coast guy, so I I barely know what
it's like to have the Tenny and you guys had
out to have out there. But it's always sounded like
like conceptually the idea that it's always sounded awesome to me. Yeah,
(31:04):
it's it's a lot of fun. Albert Brier always good stuff.
Get him on Twitter at Albert Breer, senior NFL reporter
from the mm QB. He's also going from training camp
to training camp and always a good followers. You can
follow along as he gives you updates on NFL teams
throughout the course of the off season. Albert, thanks so much, man.
We'll do it again soon. All right, Thanks guys, have
a great week. Jonas knocks Jeff Swartz is I'll kick
(31:27):
the coverage here on Fox Sports Radio. Coming up next,
Jeff Schwartz is putting together perfection. If you question him,
you've got a problem on your hands. We will get
into the very latest on that. Next. Here it's I'll
kick the coverage Fox Sports Radio. This this is I'll
kick the coverage. Hey, this is Jason McIntyre. Joined me
(31:49):
every weekday morning on my podcast Straight Fired with Jason McIntyre.
This isn't your typical sports pod pushing the same tired
narratives down your throat every day. Straight Fire gives you
honest opinions on all the biggest sports headlines, accurate stats
to help you win big at the sports book, and
all the best guests. Do yourself a favor and listen
to Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre on the I Heart
(32:12):
Radio app, Apple Podcast or wherever you get your podcasts
a little over ten minutes from now, some very curious
moves made in the world of sports. We will get
to that here again a little over ten minutes from now,
right here on Fox Sports Radio. Uh So, yesterday, if
(32:33):
you were not here and taking part in the show,
we decided, you know what, the offensive line never gets
enough love, and for the most part, people have no
idea what the hell they're talking about when it comes
to evaluating offensive lineman. But fortunately we have an actual
offensive lineman, a guy who played in the NFL, a
guy who played a long time in the NFL, in
(32:54):
Jeff Schwartz. And so we decided, all right, why don't
we construct our perfect offensive line, the best offensive lineman
at every single position. Yesterday, Jeff, you gave the nod
at left tackle to David bak Tr, But there were
some others that were in the conversation as well too. Yeah,
so we started left tackle, went with with with bok Tr,
who again at path protection um at a premium for
(33:17):
me at that position. Right, that's a position where, uh,
that's so important and there's no one better, um what
healthy than him. Obviously health is a concern. He has
come back from injury and that was also concerned for
Toront Smith, who had is is up there as well.
And there's other guys that I think are young and
up and coming. They can they can be um some
some elite players. And so now we move inside to
(33:39):
left guard. And this one's easy. So we're well because
we want to make sure that we've got the pageantry
and we've got our live studio band. This is the
live studio band is here. They've got masks on, so
fired up, guys, this is our studio. But yeah, there
it is. It's not even a cover. This is the
original version. So Jeff Schwartz, we moved to left guard,
(33:59):
and who gets a nod? Well, we'll get to that
a second. This one is fairly easy in my opinion,
but we'll talk about the other candidates, right. So Alian
Mark Pett the Bucks left guard, a fellow member of
the tribe as well, so he gets a little buff
up for that. He had a great sea look. It's
interesting because Tenna Bay's offensive line last year played poorly
against Chicago. If you remember, was that game Brady lost
count of what down it was, and they had played
(34:22):
good up until then, and everyone wrote that entire offensive
line off. But then offensive line Aliant mar pett, Ryan Jensen,
and Alex Kappa inside played very well all season. You
can make an argument that all three should have had
some consideration for All Pro vote. And then of course
we're at tackle and Tristan Worths did well as a rookie,
so um I was starting with Alan mar Pett is
(34:42):
getting a vote for best left guard in the NFL
would go over to Kansas City. Now Joe Tooney, who
just came over from the Patriots, who's the highest paid
the guard in all football. Uh, he is outstanding. He's
he's he's played every game of his career. He can
you everything you asked him to do, and he's probably
the best pulling guard in the NFL right now. He
(35:04):
is a fantastic at pulling. We saw by the way
that the Chiefs have put in um the old G
T counter that they run at Oklahoma with with Twney
pulling first, in Orlando Brown coming around second. We saw
that some fan had video that I'm sure and you
read did not like that getting out, But inetheless it
is that's the thing about you know about college and
being so secretive at practice like the NFL I got
(35:24):
they got fans filming practice like it's like, come on,
you know, get out of here. Um, we'll go another
another vote here for our owner consideration is Joe Plutonio
the Browns. The Brown's offensive line in general, uh is fantastic.
They might be the best offensive line in all football
as you head to the season. But Potonia has been
(35:44):
there the longest um on that line. He's their captain.
He acres at offensive line. He's a fabulist left guard.
But the winner of this and I'm sorry if I
left out a player that you like but not you Jonas.
But just in general, there's and there are other players
I think that you know, the might be under consideration
at some point of this season. But Quinn Nelson of
(36:06):
is the winner here. I will say though Quinn has
a look up to the expectations, which is very tough
to do. Right. He came in the NFL. Is is
um a Malley machine, I know a dame and and
oftentimes you know there might be be trouble translating that.
The NFL all the hype, the hype, but there are
some some chins in the armor. Guys. We look at
him and I think people see all the fancy not fancies,
(36:29):
the wrong ward, all the highlight place that we see
right on him knocking guys down and him being beast.
But you know, sometimes doesn't move the best and past
protection can get beat a little bit of times. So
he's the best left guard. But I think Jonas we've
gone in a direction where we're giving him not too
much praise, but we're not looking at some of the
warts he has as a player, which again aren't many. Um,
(36:52):
we'll get to right guard in a few minutes, assumeing
on Thursday, I should say we're gonna have more of
a discussion. I think que then, Um, but that that's
my left guard, easy, easy picked quit Nelson Indianapolis Colts. Well,
I love Quittin Nelson. Also the I so you've seen
some issues with him so where it's not just the
he's a stud all the way through and through that.
(37:14):
There are some holes in this game that you've identified
watching him so far, there are some we're going to
compare him to another player, UM, a right guard. It
happens all the time. Um, you know these players get
compared as far as who's better, and when you look
at the overall body of work between him and again,
I'm gonna tease the right guard. Um, you might be
(37:36):
on America's team and we will we'll talk about more
about I think what what Quinn? How he can catch
up to this player. But look, he's made three he's
made three All Pros. He's going to be a Hall
of Famer. Um, he's everything that you've wanted in a
player that you drafted very high. He's been fabulous. So
what is his contract extension going to look? Like? Quinn?
(37:57):
But bazillion dollars? I mean gonna say like, but I
don't know. I mean the thing about Quinn Nelson, I'll
just say this that that really um to me, made
the biggest difference in that team was he made that
team more physical. Like he's gonna get paid because of
what he's done also, but also he just made that
entire team play more physical. Yeah, it's h It's gonna
(38:21):
be interesting to see what what that contract looks like.
Is he's gonna get paid? Uh and Uh to your point,
he's already a multiple time All Pro. It feels like
a Hall of Fame if he just continues on in
this path is destined for Quentin Nelson after he's all done.
It is Outcape coverage, Fox Sports Radio More an hour,
