(00:26):
man himself, the pride of Dublin, Ohio, and a man
who I didn't even realize this, but finds himself in
familiar territory this time of year, the one and only
Brady Quinn exactly well for anybody that is a was
a frequent listener to you and I on Sunday nights.
You and I have done a Sunday night show together
(00:47):
for like five six years on Fox Sports Radio. One
of the things that we know about August and September
when it comes to doing those shows is that one
out of every three without FAY results in some sort
of a tropical storm hitting the Florida area and losing power.
All right, so we know that you losing power at
(01:09):
some point because the tropical storm has hit the South
Florida area. That's always a possibility. It seems like it
happens every year, and here we are. I'm watching the
Weather Channel, and my god, tropical Storm Fred on his
way to possibly do some damage. Brady Quinn, Yeah, it
looks like he's gonna hit up the West coast. I
think we're gonna be okay. I think we're gonna be
okay for this week. It's not supposed to hit landfall
(01:30):
here in South Florida until Saturday, so I think we're
gonna be okay. I think we'll make it through the week, Buddy.
I mean that that was Ah, this is no exaggeration.
There were every single year, because you were also calling
games for Fox, there would be some sort of a
weather delay, some weather delay, some power outage. Like what
was the worst was the one in Kansas State? Was
(01:50):
that the worst one? No? No, no, the one of these?
Lansing we had like a four and a half hour
weather delay for a Michigan State Penn State game that
would we literally off the booth. We went to a
dining hall on campus in East Lansing and we were
just sitting there, full suits and all, and everyone's like
looking at us while we sitting neat I mean, I
(02:12):
felt like I was in like a glass jar, and
people would finally mosey over and be like, hey, do
you guys know win the game starting back up? And
we're like, no, we know as much as you do
at this point. It was that long of a delay.
It was. It was one of the longer uh days,
I would say, in my life as far as when
we got there and then when we actually ended up
leaving this stadium later on that evening. But you know,
(02:35):
the crazy scenario was this because to your point that
this is hurricane season for a lot of uh, those
who were impacted by that on the coast, East coast,
I should say, And there was a year where we
had a hurricane that was coming ended up not really
hitting uh. It did do some wind damage and so forth,
but it wasn't too bad. We did have to evacuate,
(02:56):
and so I evacuated the family, but I was fly
eying out to call an Oregon Nebraska game. Well, there
were wildfires out around Austen out there on on the
west coast, and so I remember after we evacuated out
and once we got I got the family settled and safe,
(03:17):
then I'm flying out to Oregon and I'm going I
don't even know if this game is gonna take place
because the air quality was so poor, and there were
some questions about what or not the game would happen.
So the whole entire thing, like I was worried about
my house, I'm worried about whether or not I'm just
wasting this trip going out to Oregon, and are we
actually be able to play the game. The game ended
(03:37):
up going off just fine. It was obviously Justin Herbert
was playing at that point, so it was a fun game.
Oregan ended up winning, and then we got back. The
house wasn't damage, so we kind of lucked out. We've
been very fortunate during hurricane season down here, but that
was the craziest time. God, that was the craziest weekend.
As far as just evacuating getting out. You should have
(03:58):
seen by the way, just reports people like on the
highways and so forth. It was like the end of days. No,
there was no decency whatsoever. People would be like crawling
over each other just to be able to get some
gas or to be able to you know, get to
the airport to fly out. People had no decency or
(04:18):
any just you know, manners whatsoever, and trying to evacuate,
they're just all worried about themselves. It was the craziest
thing I've ever seen. And by the way, weren't you
getting ready to call an XFL game and the pandemic
hit and you got shut down? Yeah? Yeah, I was
over at Tampa when that happened, and uh, I remember
distinctly being on the calls with the executives at Fox
(04:42):
and then kind of keep us in the loop and
talking to the coaching staff and they're just like, yeah,
this thing is gonna happen. We're just prepared for the
game like anything else. I'm like, there's a there's a
pandemic going on, Like, I don't I don't think this
thing is gonna gonna last much longer. And then two
weeks later, the league doesn't even exist and you were
there ready to call a game. That is the eerie
thing was after the game got canceled, there's obviously all
(05:05):
this crew there from Fox, and everyone's like, well, we
can't fly out tonight, we can't fly out to tomorrow morning,
so let's just go to Top Golf. So everyone went
to Top Golf, a lot of people, I mean, we
were planning on working that season together and we were
just getting started and literally we met, shook hands, played
some top golf, had a few beers, everyone rolled out
(05:26):
and that was it and never got to work with
some of those folks ever. Again. Yeah, that is that's
wild man. So's you really when when you're on the
call for a game, just you know, buy or beware. Yeah,
that's why they just that they let me do remote
now from Stead. So that's all right though. Man. Now
here's the thing. I know what you're thinking, man, Brady,
that you know that that that poor guy he just
(05:47):
can't catch a break when he calls a game. Um, well,
if you if you feel bad for him, how about
this poor bastard who decided to go to his sports
book in New Jersey and placed two separate bets. Right,
this is the two separate bets, and here are the details.
It's through Caesar's Sports a Better in New Jersey. Bet
(06:10):
two separate times. The first time he bet a thirty
eight thousand dollar wager to win one point three million dollars.
The next time he plays ten thousand dollars to make
twenty eight thousand dollars. All right, so this is two
separate bets. So he has gone back multiple times and
(06:32):
both bets are the same bet, and that bet is
for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to go seventeen and oh
all right, So this guy not only did he like
it once, he said, you know, the odds have dipped
so much, why don't I go back in for seconds.
I'd like to make this bet again because he's convinced
Brady Quinn that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are gonna go
(06:54):
seventeen and O this upcoming season. That right, there is
a guy who just wasted a signal nificant amount of money.
Because that's not happening. It's a bad betman, it's and
here's the thing is, it's not even a fun bet.
You know, you could get futures bets on all sorts
of things right now for the league and for the season,
and then if things don't go the way you bet,
(07:14):
you can hedge. This thing could be done week one
or week two. I mean, let's just say week one.
They opened the season versus Dallas. What's the Dallas beats?
So it's over like that money is gone, and it's
it's not. It's it's not a fun bet from the standpoint.
You can't even track it throughout the course of the year,
So you know, odds of it happening, I don't know,
point zero one, whatever, whatever you want to make it
(07:36):
to be. I mean that that's the reality is. It's
so hard. I mean, how Patriots won sixteen games. That's
the only team I can think of. You can say
the Dolphins in seventy two, but they did play sixteen
game regular season schedule. At that point, I mean, you're
getting everybody's best shot. We've seen teams open up the
season when when they're when they won a super Bowl
(07:58):
and maybe they struggle a little bit. Didn't the Patriots
get beat by the Chiefs one They opened up a Thursday,
I think celebrating a Super Bowl and the Chiefs went
in there and beat him. And so the idea that
this guy twice walked up and said, you know, here's
ten grand. You know, I'd like I'd like to bet
on the bucks to go seventeen and know that should
have been enough, dude, and then he goes back for
twenty eight thousand more and says, you know, I'd like
(08:21):
to do this thing again. Look, he's either a genius
he knows something that we don't know. But I think
maybe people are and this guy specifically, are forgetting the
fact that there was a little bit dicey at times
last year. I mean they were annihilated by the New
Orleans Saints. You and I were on the air during
that game. They were annihilated during that game. They lost
Nick Foles and the Bears at one point. They were
(08:43):
swept by the Saints last year in the regular season.
It's not like this was some squeaky clean year and
they were dominant. They played really well towards the towards
the back end after the bye week, which was late
and into the postseason. But man, we had eleven or
twelve games of evidence that this wasn't the smoothest ride
in the world. I just I don't get it. I
don't know what the hype is. Remember when the Broncos
(09:05):
won back to back Super Bowls? Yes, I always remember that,
thinking to myself what was going on in John always head,
because at that point in time in his career, you
were probably thinking, like, this is the storybook ending, Like
he just rides off in the sunset, he ends up
winning a Super Bowl and that's it. No, they knew
(09:25):
how good they were, like that team knew how dominant
they were, so much so that he came back for
another year to win in back to back years and
then ride off into the sunset like there's something about that. Now.
Tampa's trying to run it back, as they would say,
with signing all these guys back, that usually doesn't work
(09:46):
out very well, at least not in this day and
age of the NFL. And I just have a hard
time believing that they're gonna be, you know, able to
have this the type of consistency they need to have
over seventeen games now. The only thing they have working
in their favor is that Drew Brees isn't in New
Orleans anymore, and so that that team that game looks
(10:07):
much more winnable twice a year. And so maybe they
win the division, that gives them better chance of getting
the number one overall seed, and if they get the
number one overall seed, that's gonna give them the best
chance moving forward of of hopefully planning the Super Bowl. However,
I would say this, of all the places that I
think opposing teams would welcome in the playoffs, Tampa would
(10:28):
be one. Like, I think every road team would love
going into Tampa. Hey, it's not known that well for
being a very loud environment and be the weather, it's
gonna be fantastic. So that's a place that I'm not
sure there's much of an advantage. And you look at
how they got there last year and wanted they had
to go on the road, which there was no crowd.
So if any year benefited them to being able to
(10:50):
win on the road, in particular in the playoffs, it
was last year. That whole thing gets flipped on its head.
Now moving forward, I think it's gonna be a different
year for the Tampa Bay Bucks. I don't see them
get any are close to seventeen. Yeah, no, I I
don't think it's happening. And and look, it would not
surprise me if they ended up losing early on. I mean,
if you just look at the early portion of their schedule,
they've got Dallas, they've got Atlanta, and then they've got
(11:10):
back to back a road games against the Rams and Patriots.
You know, Belichick is gonna do whatever you possibly can
to try and to try and get even in that game.
But what it comes to, and this is not gonna
be doom and gloom. We're gonna rip the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, right,
So I just want to you know, I want to
show that there is, you know, a little bit of
faith in Tampa Bay. I'm gonna give you just a
list of some odds here and you tell me what
(11:31):
you like. All right. So the the win total for
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is eleven and a half. I
like the over because I do think that they're a
twelve and five football team. I do think that's a possibility.
But sitting at eleven and a half tells me, yeah,
the smart people also recognize seventeen and oh, not happening.
Not happening. And never mind the fact Brady's forty four.
(11:55):
It's at some point, don't we have to factor that
in here? Like, I know, he's played great, but at
some point it's got to be part of the conversation. Look,
everyone's been so hesitant to say, all this is the end,
this is the end because they said that back when
he was in his mid lay thirties in New England,
and then now look what he's done so far. So
everyone's afraid to say that. And I get that. I
(12:15):
would say this though, is the beginning of the end.
And then this is like putting a jinx on him
or saying that you know he's he can't be capable
of winning m v P. I just think this is
the beginning of the end. I think from a physical standpoint,
Let's not forget he is coming off of surgery, you know,
something that we we've tend to gloss over because we've
been distracted with they are and Roger stuff in Green Bay.
(12:35):
You know, Dax now got an injury, like there's been
other guys we've been more focused on as opposed to
Tom coming back from this, this knee surgery that could
play a factor this year, like it could be a
different year for this team. And the last thing is,
you know, their offense is going to have to be
able to click the way it did at the end
of the season, and their defense is gonna about to
be as dominant of what as it was at the
(12:56):
end of the season. That's hard to do for sixteen games,
let alone that game. Now in seventeen games, So I
just looking at the over underbet, I would say eleven
ten wins seems more likely for them. That's saying twelve.
And I know I'm backtracking off of looking at their
division and it might be atle easier to win than
we think. I just I still think getting over that
(13:17):
marks would be really hard for them this year. And
by the way, to win the NFC plus three ten.
They're the favorite to win the NFC this according to
Fox Bet, ahead of the Rams, Niners and Packers of
the make up the top four. So just, uh, you know,
I'm just saying, keep an eye on those Niners, just saying,
keep an eye on the the San Francisco forty Niners.
(13:38):
And I don't know if that's just you know, me teasing,
because I know you and I like to make our
Super Bowl picks before the before the season. I don't
know if that's me teasing my award winning Super Bowl
picks in the preseason, much like the college football preseason
Coaches Bowl. But you know, keep an eye on those
forty Niners. Brady Quinn, just saying letting you know this
is gonna be a bad pick. I can already tell
this is coming and it's gonna be a bad pick
(13:58):
from you. If you're hitting up. I'll just say it
like I don't want to give away all the you know,
all the details here, but you know, at some point
before the season, we gotta have that discussion, all right,
Brady Quinn, Jonas Knox. It's OutKick the Coverage here on
Fox Sports Radio. You can listen to the show is
always on the I Heart Radio app. Coming up next, though,
we are going to hear from a TV star, a
(14:20):
full blown TV star is going to grace you with
her presence. It's Shannon Spake. She's with the next here,
it's out Kick the Coverage Fox Sports Radio. This is
OutKick the Coverage. Brady tried to warn people that a team,
a division rival of a very popular Super Bowl pick
(14:42):
may have made the sneakiest best move of the off season.
And it's looking like it's becoming more and more evident
each and every day. We'll get to that here ten
minutes from now on Fox Sports Radio. Right now. Always
kind enough to join us here on FS are and
we are graced by your presence at a full blown
TV star, Shannon Spake of Fox Sports. You see her
(15:04):
on Fox Sports one. She joins us every single week,
kind enough to spend a few minutes with us here
slumming it with us on morning radio. When you hang
out with TV stars all day, Shannon, we appreciate it.
He gives the best cheeses upcoming cheeses and he's the
best hype man as well. Brady. I mean, like, how
do you not just like help your chest and feel
(15:24):
great about yourself the rest of the day. Well, because
usually there ends up being an element of disappointment involved
with I can assure you, Shannon, from from my years
working with them. Yeah, I mean, it's only it's that bad, Shannon.
I do want to I do want to ask you
this because we were talking about Brady. You know, I
don't know if jinks is the right word, but he's
(15:45):
had some really bad luck calling games with with major
weather issues. Can you recall a couple of times, a
couple of games you've been at, all right, events you've
been at to where just the weather conditions were the worst,
or or a game getting canceled last minute? Okay, so listen.
I I've covered NASCAR for almost twenty years, and I
remember the first time I covered a college basketball game.
(16:05):
I keyed my Mike and I asked my producer. I said, Hey,
is it raining outside right now? And he's like, yeah,
why And I was like exactly, Because in Nascar, if
it rains, you do not race and you sit around.
And I've sat through. We actually in Michigan in two
thousand and eight, we didn't race until Tuesday. The race
was supposed to be on Sunday. We sat through rain
(16:27):
delay on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and then the race
finally got underway Tuesday. The kicker is this, we were
staying in an hour and a half from the track,
so every single day I would have to drive with
my with my camera guy to the hotel and then
back to the racetrack. And I remember the race finally
started and and fog moved in and we were all like,
(16:49):
are you kidding me? Because they had to. They had
the red flag the race because of fog. Um. I
worked a game in New Orleans one time, um in
at l s U. It was a nicky game and
they actually almost canceled that game because of ice. There
was such bad ice. But I don't think I've had
a game postponed, definitely a NASCAR race, but not a
(17:10):
game postponed for for weather like like Brady was talking about,
we didn't get to go to top goll I, Well, no,
that was just canceled. I mean, so tell me this much,
what are the drivers, the pit crew of the teams.
What are they doing after it's being well, I guess
during the delay, but then also once it's postponed, like
(17:30):
are they just going back preparing for the next day
hoping Monday will work. That's not working now it's on Tuesday.
Like what's their schedule? How do they adjust all of it? Well?
And that's the interesting thing, Brady, Right, And because when
I cover football, if you have like a delay in football,
and I know that you could talk about this, right,
you go back to the locker room. You have to
kind of go through your process again to get ready
mentally to get back onto the field. I remember covering
(17:52):
a Kentucky game one time in the tournament where the
guys were like literally in the tunnel ready to come out,
and it was like at night, maybe even closer to ten,
and the game went into like a double overtime in
front of them. They then had to go back into
the locker room kind of relaxed, chill. So going through
that process. But for drivers another reason why I say
these guys are wired so differently, and and absolutely the
(18:15):
mental aspect is so so vital because they do they
go back to their motor homes. Oftentimes they sit and
they'll they'll eat, they'll wait out the rain. You know,
you gotta wait till it stops raining, and then you
have to wait another hour and a half to two
hours for them to drive the track. Sometimes another cell
will drive come in and it will delay it even more.
So it is a process of kind of figuring out
(18:35):
what we're gonna do and when we're gonna race. I mean,
the Day TWA five hundred the last two years, we
didn't get off air until almost two o'clock in the
morning this past year because of the Day TWA being
delayed for rain delay, guys were getting in their cars,
going across the street, getting something to eat. It's a
you know, it's a drive through, whether it be McDonald's
or whatever and coming back. So it can be we
(18:56):
can have really, really, really long days in NASCAR, especially
when you're dealing with weather delays. Shannon Spake of Fox
Sports joining us here on Fox Sports Radio. Jonas knocked
Brady Quinn with you here on FS are I mean
you mentioned the uh, you know, I'm not gonna sit
here in judgment. These guys are going to a drive
through as they're waiting around for the race to start
at Daytona, especially when Shannon Spake takes to Twitter last
(19:17):
week and post a picture of raw potatoes as part
of her part of her diet. I gotta know when
did that start? My dad used to like cut raw potatoes,
like like I guess he would be cooking them, but
then he would cut them and he would put salt
on them and eat them. Like. No, we're not doing this,
either of you guys. Like I'm not talking like I'm
not like eating it like an apple, but like when
(19:39):
my husband cuts up raw potatoes to make like some
pulps like fries or whatever, like, I will absolutely dig
in and eat some raw potatoes. No, no, no, one's
with me. What's what's the texture? What does it taste? Like?
I'm not doing this. I'll let you know that right now.
Give it a try with a chicken parm next time,
Brady Quinn, come on, it's gonna ruin them. That's a delicacy.
(20:02):
I can't risk that. Um. I don't know it's it's
it's certainly got a crunch to it, obviously, I don't know.
I don't know what it is about it. Maybe it
reminds me of like, you know, cooking with my dad
or whatever. But yeah, I'm a I'm a big fan
of the raw potatoes. And I gotta tell you, like,
when I put that out on Twitter, Jonas like it was,
it was kind of like people on my side, So
(20:24):
I didn't feel like it was that crazy. Yeah, Shannon, No,
if it's that's because about half of that Okay, they're
lazy and they just don't want to go through the
process of baking or cutting up a raw potato, so
then making it something else. Everyone knows it's a process
(20:44):
if you're gonna make something with a potato, Okay. I mean,
there's not something strange that you guys eat. There's not
something like strange that that people would think that you are.
I ate rob Bell peppers. I ate rob Bell peppers. Yeah,
that's that's on a normal plate that you put out
for like appetizers. That's not weird at all. All right.
My dad used to put pepper, salt and pepper on
(21:08):
his watermelon and eat it like that. Yeah, I've seen that. Yeah,
definitely take salt on a watermelon. That's revolting. That is
absolutely revolting. Catch up on eggs, We do catch up
on eggs. I've done that before. I think it was
bomb though, to be honest with you, I think I
did that yesterday. I'm pretty sure I did that yesterday
(21:28):
at some point. That doesn't that doesn't strike me as odd.
But now, Shannon, what are we what are we looking
forward to when it comes to the brickyard this weekend
in Indianapolis. Well, I've got a I've got a trivia
a little trivia game for you guys. But yeah, so
all right, so we'll do with this. So this weekend
is Indianapolis. We're going to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. India
(21:49):
is one of the four Crown Jewel races in NASCAR.
We have four of them. Okay, India is one of them.
Can you name just one of the other Crown Jewels? Well, hey,
look at that. It's like competitive or something. All right,
can I have another one? Talladega is not a crown
jewel should be in my opinion? Yeah, Southern sid So
(22:13):
the coke six hundred, I would have eventually gotten to
what's the other one? Southern Southern. I wouldn't have gotten that.
I wouldn't have gotten yea. So NASCAR started racing in
indian NASCAR did who won the very first race, Jeff Gordon,
Look at you break that? Okay, you know what, Hold
(22:33):
on a second. You guys saw each other at the
Fox Retreat. Okay, yes, and I'm tired to get out
of here. This is TV off the door. This is
TV people picking on a radio guy. That's exactly what stop.
Shan and I did see each other. We exchanged plusant trees.
That was it that we did not talk about any
of this trivia. I swear to you. Okay, alright, two
(22:58):
years after Jeff Gordon won the very first race? What
tradition was started when Dale Jarrett one? It smokes? They smoke?
No they don't. I mean, I'm sure they do. But
Winston used to be, you know, the sponsor back of
the day. You know, are you trying to get some
(23:19):
bonus points here? Yeah? Because I got a rug yeah something, Yeah,
you know. Kissing the bricks. So they kissed the bricks.
There's a yard of bricks across the front stretch of
the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and drivers will kiss the bricks
when they win. And that was started by Dale jar
What do Indy car drivers drink in Victory Lane? I
think you guys just mentioned this milk Yeah. Do you
(23:41):
know they get to pick their milk. Did you know this?
They what kind of milk they want? Yeah, one driver
selected whole milk, twelve selected two percent two buttermilk, and
one chocolate which I'm not digging chocolate, buttermilk, butterk, my gosh,
(24:02):
butter milk. First off, Hold on, hold on? What's your
stance on like the oat milk almond milk? Like? Would
they serve them alternative milk? Would they do it? So?
Is it so two twenty one of me to say
that I can't drink cool milk, that I have a
sensitivity to cow's milk and I have to drink almond milk?
Or first off, oat milk is by far and away
(24:26):
the best alternative. If you're not on the oat milk train,
I don't know what. I don't know what to tell you.
I don't it's so good. Milk is so good. Yeah,
I'm not Yeah, I'm not having any milk and milk.
This is no I'm saying I'm not having any milk.
Here's the other thing. The last thing when I've been
in a sweaty car for that long and I the
(24:49):
last thing I want is a glass of milk. Yeah,
I can't. I don't understand it. It's kind of it's
kind of comforting. You know. Some of those guys do
on Coca cola, you know, because they're sponsored by coke
or Pepsi or whatever. So they have to take like
a big chug a coke as they climb out of
those cars just to get their sponsor plug in. And
I'm thinking, oh my god, there, I couldn't even imagine.
(25:12):
I would love to figure out if like it was
actually not a coke and it was like Mr pib
or r C Cola that they had put in. Actually
that can so I actual stuff. I actually saw a
driver one time take a sip but the cap was
still on, so he was totally just taking it like
he was pretending that he was taking his big sip,
(25:33):
but the capim you know what we call that, and
in particular on this show, we call that a Jonas
knocks absolutely taking it. Hey, listen, I don't care. I
wore a clip on tie for years. Couldn't care less,
and I don't want I don't want to bother. And
you know, if if I've got to create the illusion
that I'm wearing an actual tie, then I've got to
do it. If he's got to create the illusion he's
(25:54):
drinking a sponsor's drink and he's got to do it,
You've got things to do. Sorry, When did you stop
wearing the clip on tie? That's the question. I think
I just decided a few years ago. I'm just not
gonna wear ties period. I guess it's not it doesn't
work that. Yeah, it's over. Yeah, it's gone. Get her
(26:15):
on Twitter at Shannon Spake. Shannon, we appreciate it as
always with you again, of course, talk to you guys later.
She's the best. Jonas Knocks Brady Quinn here on a
Fox Sports Radio. You can listen to. The show is
always on the I Heart Radio app. And that's the thing,
you know, Shannon pops on and we talk a little Nascar.
We're gonna just see you know, some food items, you know,
traditions with with Nascar and at at Indianapolis with the brickyard,
(26:39):
all sorts of funny you never know. Jonas Knocks Brady
Quinn with you here on FS are by the way,
Brady Quinn, um, I mean, look, you tried to tell everybody,
Hey man, the Pittsburgh Steelers might have done it again.
They might have done it again. They might have swooped
in and made a move Uh and may and signed
a player that was there and available for other teams
to have, most notably the Cleveland Browns, who went in
(27:01):
a different direction and apparently rave reviews. Melvin Ingram, the
longtime Charger, but most notably a South Carolina game cock,
Brady Quinn. Melvin Ingram is getting rave reviews with the
Pittsburgh Steelers. They signed him to a one year deal.
We talked about it on the air actually with LaVar
(27:21):
that we were surprised he was still even a free agent,
Like we didn't even know that he was still out there.
The Steelers got him, They got him at a reasonable price,
and apparently with t J. Watt, you know, trying to
negotiate this contract extension. Mike Tomlin says, Ingram's getting rave reviews.
The Steelers camp, well, Ingram's getting some rave reviews. But
who looked really good too in their first preseason game
(27:42):
is uh high Smith, the player out of Charlotte they
drafted in the third round a couple of years ago. Uh.
People kind of thought maybe he would be the replacement
to Bud Dupree. He looked good too. I don't know
that this has anything to do whatsoever with the T. J.
Watton negotiations, only because he's not placing what he's really
gonna be there to see whether or not he can
(28:04):
feel the job that that's left behind with Bud Dupree
moving on, or if it will be Highsmith, or maybe
it's a hedge and you've got now three that that
could potentially do it nonetheless. As I told Browns fans,
being a former Brown's player, being a lifelong Browns fan,
this is what concerned me is you went after Jadeveon
(28:26):
Clowney because of his name, Tack McKinley because of his
youth and maybe still some upside, instead of going with
a guy like Melvin Ingram, who has been more proven
than both of those two throughout the course of his career.
So it's it's frustrating. I won't be shocked at all.
As I've said to you in previous conversations, Melvin Ingram
is gonna make a play at some point in time
(28:48):
versus the Browns, and it's gonna remind everyone that they
messed up once again. It's going to happen, I'm telling
you it's going to happen at some point. Uh. And
that's aside from the rest of the ballers they've got
on their defense in Pittsburgh. But Melvine and Melvin Ingram
will play a factor. There's still a long way to
go to see whether or not he's gonna be they
gotta start opposite of what. But he's looking good so far,
(29:09):
and it makes a lot of sense because when he's healthy,
he's been an impactful rusher. Yeah, it's gonna be gonna
be awesome to watch that play out. And look, he
was the best Jenevian Clowney got all the love at
South Carolina. He was the best player there. One hit man,
one hit. It's it is really crazy, I mean. And look,
Genevion Clowne is a much more complete player than people
(29:31):
give him credit. You know, he is better against the run. However,
in the NFL, you know, they don't run the football
as much, and there's not as much credit given to
those edge rushers who stopped the run. And so even
though he is more of a complete player than just
a guy who's gonna rush well off the edge, he
still hasn't been as impactful as an edge Rusher never
never accumulated double digit sacks ever in his career, has
(29:53):
struggled with injuries, So it'll be interesting to see how
that plays out between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. That's like one
of those underlying story reliance that I'm gonna fall throughout
the course of the year. And also I think a
lot of this if you go back to his high
school footage, um, you know, to where people looked at
him like there, if you go to Jadevian Clowney's high
school highlights or because I think he played at rock
Hill in South Carolina are unbelievable. Like there's at one
(30:17):
point on his highlight, he's playing running back and he
breaks off like a nine yard touchdown, runs everybody every
like a grizzly bear, bigger than everybody on the field,
and so he breaks off this run and it just
became this legend. And when he got to South Carolina
and and that game against Michigan, and I think it
(30:37):
was the Outback Bowl, that game against Michigan, the one hit. Look,
I mean, he made a great play, but if that
guy buckles up his helmet correctly, or is Jenevian Clowny
is still getting all this buzz, like, think about maybe
if the offensive line had missed their assignment up front,
that would have helped too. And in that game, Taylor
Luan I think was the tackle for Michigan. And I
(30:57):
think he dominated Clowney that game. I think he had
a really good game against him. It's just he went
number one, and it's just been trying to and I
think he's even said at this offseason that he didn't
live up to these, you know, expectations. But this idea
that everyone says it alway, He's got Miles Garrett on
the on the other side, so now it's gonna make
a difference. Dude. He played with J. J. Watt, he
(31:18):
played like Whitney merciless, like there was good players on
that Texans defense. And still he didn't have the impactful
year that everyone thought he was going to. So I
don't know, man, I just think, look, man, if melvine
Agram just steps up and has a monster year, this
is going to be amazing. And you, growing up being
a Browns fan, you've seen this story before and that's
why he tried to warn people. At least she tried
to try. Man, I'm hoping it's not gonna work out
(31:41):
that way. But something smells fishy. I get it as
hump day, and maybe it's just one of those days.
You know, maybe I'm just having one of those hump days.
But I'm telling you right now, something's fishy up with
all this man? All right, here we go, Brandy Quinn
Jonas knocks. This is How Kicked the Coverage here on
five Sports Radio. You can listen to the show on
(32:01):
the I Heart Radio app. Coming up next, we are
going to have a discussion about a quarterback battle to
start the season because there's a player that's completely gone missing.
There's some hype around a rookie and all of it
is playing out in the a f C. We'll get
into that next. Here it's How Kick the Coverage Fox
Sports Radio. This this is I'll Kick the Coverage. Hey,
(32:25):

(32:48):
every week Explorer some amazing facts about a human nature
and more. Let'sten to the fifth hour with Ben Mallow
on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast or wherever
you get your podcast. Coming up top of next hour,
we'll call it all over. Ten minutes from now here
on fs ARE, we are going to take a closer
look at one team who could find themselves in a
really difficult spot this upcoming NFL season and a large
(33:11):
fan base who will not be pleased by it. So
we'll get to that here coming up top next hour,
little over ten minutes from now here on fs are,
So Brady we were discussing earlier, Carson Wentz is back
at practice. Now he's not practicing, but he wanted to
be known that he was not going to wear a
boot at practice, much like Quentin Nelson who had the
same exact foot issue and foot injury, which I think
(33:33):
is speeding up the clock. Carson Wentz doesn't want to
look bad, but the story that was getting a lot
of buzz at practice for the Indianapolis Colts, a team
that some people feel outside, you know, on on the
fringe of maybe being a Super Bowl contender if if
some things go their way, is the battle for the
starting quarterback job if Carson Wentz does miss time this
(33:55):
regular season. And we had been hearing that Jacob Eason
was the guy he drafted out of Washington last year,
I believe a fourth round pick, fourth or fifth round
pick last year. Um And now all of a sudden,
Sam Ellinger, a sixth rounder, a guy you know very
well from working Big New kickoff for Fox out of Texas,
(34:16):
all of a sudden, is in the discussion splitting reps
with Jacob Eason as they get ready to potentially have
to suit up Week one of the regular season for
the Indianapolis Colts. So the other quarterback that's not in
this conversation is Brett Huntley. Alright, formally at U c
L as he's bounced around a little bit between Arizona
(34:36):
Green Bay. Now he finds himself in Indianapolis. He's almost
got seven hundred snaps in the league. He's he's got
over three or pass attempts, he started nine games, Like,
I have no idea why you know they're not looking
at him a little bit harder as far as being
the guy to come in and have to fill in
(34:57):
for Carson if he can't play week one or and
week two for that matter. It's just a little bit surprising. Now,
maybe they want to see what they've gotten the cupboard,
and that's what's one of the reasons why you've got
to give Easton the reps. You've got to give Ellener
the reps. They drafted him the sixth round for a reason.
But I still think, regardless of what's being put out
there by the press, Sam's a great kid in a
great college career. Jacob Easton has greater upside. He was
(35:20):
one of the top recruits coming into college of who
originally went to Georgia ended up not working out there,
so he transferred to Washington and did some good things
during his time there, but still needs some some time
to grow and develop. But he's got a strong arm,
and he's a better athlete than I think. People give
him credit because they see him as a taller, longer,
(35:41):
lankier guy, but he can he can still move around
a little bit, So I suspect Easton will get the NOD,
But it still doesn't make any sense to me why
they wouldn't give Brett Hunley an opportunity given his he's
already got starting experience. Between the three of those guys,
he might be the best athlete if you go back
(36:02):
and watch some of his ability to run, whether it
was at Green Bay, where he's played some games in
the league, or at u c L a uh. And
I think he's grown a little bit over the course
of his time in the NFL. So it's a bit
surprising that it's all about Easton and Ellinger, given given
they've got a guy who's got a bit more experience
on the roster, kind of sitting wedding in the wings.
I mean, look, I think ultimately this how it's gonna
(36:22):
play out. Carson Wentz is gonna start Week one, That's
what I believe. And I think if if you are
a gambling man, and maybe people are gamblers as far
as you know whether or not they want to take
a dive at this. And we talked about it um
earlier this week, just the the starting quarterback Odds Room
might have talked about it on Friday, Week one of
the regular season for the Indianapolis Colts, and Jacob Eason
(36:44):
is the favorite, still the favorite, sitting in a minus
one fifty um Nick Foles is still in the mix
for some reason, Brett Hunley is there at four to one,
Carson Wentz is sitting at five to one. But all
of a sudden, now Sam Ellinger is now a plus
two hundred, So he's a two to one based on
one practice. Splitting reps based on one practice. They've now
(37:06):
adjusted this, and so it feels like, at least in
the eyes of some of these these sports books that
are setting these lines, that Sam Ellinger has a legitimate
shot to be the starter week one. I don't think
it's gonna happen, but at least that's a feeling from
people that have seen the the practice footage, you have
seen the reports that are out there. It doesn't make it. Yeah,
I just again, I have a hard time thinking that
just from one practice, and a lot of this probably
(37:28):
has to do more with them thinking the doors wide open.
I think behind closed doors, they've got a plan. They
want to give these guys an opportunity to what they
can do. Ellinger to, at least to the best of
my knowledge and what's being reported, this is the first
chance to get some reps with the ones, and so
it merely could just be that. I mean, at some
point too, you have to think about this. If Wentz
doesn't start a week one, or week two for that matter,
(37:48):
if this lingers on into the season and Easton goes
in and plays and he gets hurt, Ellinger better have
some experience working with the ones. Otherwise he's be thrust
into scenario he's never been in before. Frank Reich, it's
that he's a former quarterback in the NFL. He's doing
his best to see all the options, but also prepare
all these guys for every scenario. It's smart in my opinion.
