(00:26):
Don't sweat the technique. Yeah it sounded just like rock Tim. Yeah,
I sounded just like I'm Jonas. Don't sweat to technique.
That was a pretty good impersonation. Look, I don't even
remember the words. It's just yeah. So it's a very
it's a very limited uh impersonation. Yeah, it's all good.
(00:47):
I mean I got the first part of it correct.
I've got a limited Bryan Gumbile. You want to hear it?
Let me here. Let's move on to a story about
sports talk radio and a budding superstar who wants a
top ten pick. Now he's working at Fox Sports Radio.
I'm Brian Kumbel. That's pretty good. What do you mean?
(01:08):
What do you mean? That was pretty good? What's wrong?
That was a decent Brian Gumbel? Let's move on. I mean, Awker,
you guys, fix your ears it's not my impression at
your ears and fixing. Alright, um on everybody's saddle on
this argument. By the way, a little over ten minutes
(01:28):
from now, we've got ourselves a quarterback scenario in the NFL.
Apparently this competition a lot closer than we expected. We
will get to that here on top of next hour.
Ten minutes from now. Um, here's the thing. LaVar Arrington
is the pride of Happy Valley. You're the pride of
Penn State. So when you hear this, get you all
(01:50):
jack all fired up. I mean, it brings back the
good old days. I mean, just just just see this
and and and to hear it and to be there
on hold on, yes, oh yes, oh yes, oh yes,
(02:12):
come on, come on. LaVar's eyes are closed. Oh my gosh. Yeah. Alright,
it's like Beethoven. That's what I Every time we scored,
they played that as soon as we score. I mean,
so when you hear this, I mean, it just gets
(02:33):
you all. This is a set up. Well I'm that
set up. I would never set you up like that
and use this fact that you allowed our song this
long is a set up and listen, I would never
do this. I would never play the Penn State fight song.
This is where to fight song starts to to end
right here. It starts to end right here, so you're
about to drop. Well, no, I would just never. I
(02:54):
would never use the Penn State fight song, you know,
to to I mean, listen, I mean, you're all excited.
I would far be it from me to use this
fight song to point out the fact that trace McSorley
is going to miss the rest of the preseason because
he heard his back lifting a box at home. I mean,
and that's that would I would never do that the
fight song and then say he went out. Listen, I
(03:15):
would ever do that to you. You know that. I
would never point out that fellow Penn State alum trace
McSorley is now going to be out a few weeks
because he lost to a box. And listen, he lifted
a box, wrenched his back and I was gonna miss
a few weeks. I mean, what the hell of our
I mean, come on, man, he's handy around the house,
but okay, I understand, but there's a difference. He's newly married.
Come on, give the men, I mean, come on, lift
(03:37):
in a box. I mean, did you ever have that problem?
Do you ever have an embarrassing injury when it came
to you being a Penn State alum, I feel like
you gotta answer for Trace McSorley here. You're the only
guy that can. I don't necessarily have a weird injury. No,
no freak injury. No Sammy Sosa sneezing and you blot
your back and nothing like that. No, no tweaking it
(03:57):
like that on the strip club and can out and
could no none of that. No, no, no mishaps, no
real mishaps. A bit of a bad look for Trace McSorley.
And he and look he's he's a Penn State alum.
You guys probably ran into a tree. You did what
I read into a tree before he did? What sort
(04:19):
of damage you do? I just scraped my face. I
knocked the wind out of myself. No, I was. I
was playing with my dogs. I had like four dogs
at the time, and I had a whole lot of money,
and I had some really really voluptuous um people hanging
out in my backyard. And I got carried away, running
(04:41):
away from my dogs, and I was like, I think
I was deon Sanders, high stepping like I was doing
my prime time uh, skip while I was looking back
at the voluptuousness, and I ran right into a tree.
It happens. Look that that is there's there's nothing wrong
with that. I mean, I think that's happened to the
best to us. I walked through a screen. But it
wasn't like I didn't I didn't miss any time or anything.
(05:03):
I've walked through a screen door. I've walked into a
glass door that I did not I did not see
because of the reflection. I couldn't see the reflection. So
you have just all very clear. Um. In fact, it
worked to my advantage, Jonas it worked out tended to Yeah,
that's good. So that's the move that was like when
I was young and dumb. And yeah, we'll leave that
(05:30):
speaking to speaking of fireballs. Didn't even mean to go
into that. That was not even rehearsed. I kind of
stumbled into that, like the three speaking of fireball offenses.
By the way, so trace McSorley my favorite Trace McSorley moment,
and you probably remember this. I think we've actually talked
about this the game against Iowa when they went into
Iowa and went down the field and he threw that
(05:53):
touchdown past that was one of my favorite moments in
college football on recent year. Oh god like and and
just that was a on the road and you just
heard a bunch of people shut the hell up in
a hurry because Iowa was good that year. I was
working a really good team that year, and they went
down the field and throw that touchdown. In fact, yeah,
(06:15):
because that was I remember that was a strong year
for a Penn State and you lost that close game
to Ohio State. If I'm not mistaken, I think that
was the same year. I think, Oh well, then no,
I don't. I don't know. I'm trying to remember, but yeah,
but I remember that being that was what I for.
But but you know, I think, you know, we would
place the good memories of I mean renting his back box.
(06:38):
I mean, come on, now, this is outkicked the coverage.
The man is back LaVar effing air Jonas. Um. Yeah,
the man is just said, I'm presenting, yeah, I'm presenting
you know, the nation to LaVar Arrington. He was bloviating
(06:59):
earlier during one of the breaks about his his barbecue
that he put together. You had yourself, you know, some
Hawaiian sliders and rigs, and uh, it turned out pretty good. Yeah,
put some cheddar cheese on the on the ribs, the
bones were pulled out. The meat was was very well
well done, very well prepared. I was I was proud
(07:22):
of myself. Man grilled cheeses out of the Hawaiian buns
and made them into sandwiches. Look at you like it?
Just how about that? How about it? It's I mean,
just like the Fat Boy food. There's nothing this man
can't do. There's nothing this man can't do as he
(07:42):
gets geared up for another football season. Obviously, you know
the coaching, you got, you know, the college football, the NFL.
A wild time to be alive if you're an NFL
fan or a football fan in general. Here on Fox
Sports Radio and now, um, there are quarterback battles that
are playing out. Um one of which is in New England,
(08:04):
and the quarterback battle is between Cam Newton and Mac Jones.
And going into last week, I would have said, I mean,
there's there's just no chance that Mac Jones is the
starting quarterback for the New England Patriots moving forward. But um,
he did get an opportunity to play. He played pretty well.
I I think it was you know, pretty safe play
(08:26):
calling and he didn't seem to you know, you know,
really take a lot of shots downfield. And so Cam
Newton had a chance to talk with the media on
Monday in New England and they asked him whether or
not Bill Belichick has said he's the starting quarterback in
week one. Y'all sit up here asking silly questions to me,
and I'm looking at y'all with the same thing. So
I don't know what ch I want me to say.
(08:47):
You know, you know that you know he hasn't said that,
So for to you to just ask the question, you know,
it is what it is. So every single day coming
out here was the anticipation that just get better, and
that's that's the only thing that I could do. So
I control that. But as far as somebody else's analogy
or interpretation of what week one is, I'm trying to
focus on what tomorrow brings and even the adjustments for
(09:08):
tonight's meeting. A little spicy there from Canton. People be
trying to get you to say that you're getting a
second m R. I sometimes sometimes you know a little
spicy from Cam Newton there, like maybe feeling the pressure
a little bit from from Mac Jones, maybe being pushed
there kind of. I mean, you think so, I I think, Well,
(09:30):
let's hear this is more from Cam Newton. Now he
also spoke yesterday with the media. Uh and and try
to clarify, you know, he's not bothered by some of
the questioning. I don't take it personal. I just I
just want you guys to understand, like everything y'all know.
I know there's no hidden motives or things like that.
I do know those things like that I can't worry
(09:51):
about because each and every day I don't necessarily care
about who's starting. I mostly care about, you know, making
sure that I put the best product out there for me.
And I know Matt It is feeling the same way.
I know Brian is feeling the same way, and everybody
else going down each and every position. So you know,
as far as week one, we got so much too
to worry about prior two week one, and that's that's
what my focus is right now. Care about he cares, Yeah, well,
(10:14):
I mean he cares about starting. Yeah, of course he does.
I mean, it's why it say you don't care well,
and it's also why he took the job last year,
for the price he took it at look cam Newton
probably could have been a backup quarterback in a lot
of places, but he wanted to be a starter, which
is why he took what the million dollars and changing.
A lot of teams would have wanted him to bring
him in as a backup, though, I think it would
(10:35):
have disrupted the chemistry of yeah, he's too big of
a he's too big of a personality, stars just too
much with him to just bring him in, all like,
how's your backup going to be a bigger personality in
the locker room than your starter? Day one? Well, I mean, wait,
hold on a second, how how dare you Is that
a shot at Colin Kaepernick? I mean, is that what
we're talking about here? I mean, is that a shot?
(10:57):
You know? I'm just I'm just wondering. That's got a
good comparison. I'm just saying. I'm just saying, there's there's
some people that say that that was there. There were
some people that say that that was one of the problems,
that oh, you mean Colin Kaepernick couldn't be a backup somewhere.
It's like no, I mean, like, well, the idea of
bringing Colin Kaepernick would be bringing in a circus like environment,
(11:20):
and and understanding that his brand would have brought so
much shaming to the organization, to the starting quarterback, they
would have everything would have been that there's a conspiracy
against Kaepernick and that's why he's not starting. Like they
would have been putting free Kaepernick. It would it would
(11:41):
have just there would have been all kinds of protests
to play him. Yes that you just you can't do it. Yeah,
and and and and it's a little different, understand different, yes,
and and and I'm and I'm busting boss. This is
for everybody relaxed, all right, We're just having a little
bit of fun here. But the point being on the
situation with Cam Newton, I think Belichick really respects and
(12:03):
likes Cam Newton does. I think he appreciated what Cam
Newton went through last year because when he got there
last year, I mean, look, he would have been who
name another quarterback. He's going to be a historical quarterback,
and it might be more historical because of what he
did in New England versus him playing in the Super
(12:23):
Bowl and coming up short. Yes, name another quarterback that
would have been able to go into New England and
hold that team together. The first year post no Tom,
the longer the more he played, the longer his career
goes on, the more I'm a fan of Cam Newton.
I don't even care that maybe his skills have diminished
or the injuries have piled up. I've become more and
(12:43):
more of a fan of him because that guy is
actually shown I want to play like like he he
wants to play. Yeah, and he came in there. Belichick's
had nothing but glowing reviews about him, showing up his
work ethic leadership has never really spoken about He never
spoke about Tom bred He's never really spoken about guys
(13:05):
never did. And and so I think Belichick looks at
this and goes, it's gonna take a lot for for
Mac Jones to win this job. Like you'll know, if
Matt Jones is starting. The one thing we can say
about Belichick, his job is not on the line. It's
not like a mattenn Aggy situation where his jobs on
the line. Belichick is going to play the best guy
at every single position. And if Mac Jones is truly
(13:28):
the better quarterback by a mile, he's going to get
the start. But I think he appreciates and respects what
Cam Newton went through a year ago, he had very
little time to prepare for the season. Then when they
got going, New England was pretty good. And there was
an opportunity in week two against Seattle on Sunday night
where Cam Newton had the ball at the goal line.
They win that game, get a couple other games to
(13:50):
go their way. There nine and seven football team, and
the narratives completely different. But then he was like, my career,
you know, if we had one a couple more games
here and there together, a couple of wins there, and
they're not lose so many games there and there, you know,
everything would have turned out so much differently for my career.
You know. Yeah, but this is the art of sports
talk radio. If you need something to back up your opinion,
you just you know, there's some go twos there. So
(14:12):
the one if Stewart do end up happening, but he
gets covid um, his season gets sort of derailed and
he was never quite the same after that. I think
Belichick appreciated the hell out of him. I think he
still does. And it's going to take a lot for
mac Jones to win this time. I totally agree with you. Listen,
going into the game. I told everybody. I was like,
you gotta take a look at who And I said
(14:34):
this in an earlier segment, you gotta take a look
at who's getting the early reps. Cam went in and
got two series and was done. Mac Jones played five
five series. That is a lot of series to play.
So they're getting him those impactful reps so that they
could put it on film. They could get him some development,
(14:55):
some teaching, some some coaching up before we get to
the regular season. Cam the starter of this team. And
and I don't think that that's even up for debate
at the moment. I think that the idea of it
is when you think about is their quarterbacks competition there?
I mean, you saw the fans chairing for Mac, but
(15:16):
that's not going to pressure Bill Belichick into playing him.
You know how many times he started a quarterback during
his tenure in New England. Two and that was based
off of of necessity due to an injury. They didn't
have anybody else. Um. I think it was Jacoby Brissette. Um.
And as I want to say, possibly maybe the other
(15:37):
one was uh uh, who's our guy? Possible? I think
it's those two. It's one I know, I know Brissette
was one of them. He might have been both of them,
but only two times as a rookie ever started for
Bill Belicheck check Patriots coach. Team. Listen. He may pivot
and go a different way and break you know that
(15:59):
he's and known to break his trends and traditions. But
I think it's a long shot for a rookie to
impress Bill Belichick enough to unseat proven veteran, even if
that proven veteran doesn't seem to be in his prime
of performance at this point. And look, Belichick did this
(16:20):
with Drew blood So. I think people forget because Brady's success,
how good Drew bledso was blood Bledso was a good
quarterback man and he had really good years with the Patriots.
And Belichick decided that it had gotten to a point.
And this was after they signed Bledsoe to a long
term contract extension, like he got paid but wasn't a
(16:43):
rookie though, no, no, he wasn't a rookie. But Belichick
decided at that point he's the he's the best quarterback
on this roster. And he made that decision. And I
don't think there's any sort of agenda I don't think
there's any sort of, you know, outside influence when it
comes to all this. This is going to be one
of the true competitions at the quarterback position needs to win.
(17:08):
Let's be clear, He's never really drafted high with quarterbacks,
so he took a quarterback in the first round. They
spend a lot of money in free agency to put
weapons around uh this this offense. So you gotta believe
that he's feeling the a little bit of the pressure
to produce a winning season. Yeah, And and I think
(17:31):
he wants to do that with whoever is going to
give him the best opportunity to win games. And he
feels like it's Cam Newt And it's exactly why I think, Yes, yes,
and if things and if things change, Belichick will make
the switch and he's not gonna apologize for it. Bled
So lost his job because of injury. Brady was in
there because bled So got injured and and Belichick realized, Look,
(17:51):
you never lose your job because of injury until you do.
And then he recognized Tom Brady is the better quarterback
for this team. You look around all the other quarterback
competitions in the NFL. We talked about Chicago. Well, Matt
Naggi's on the hot seat. Call it what you want,
but he's on the hot seat. So that's an outside
influence there. Zach Wilson with the Jets, I mean no, no, no,
(18:12):
Solo is not on the hot seat. But he was drafted.
If he has a good year, he was drafted high.
So you know he's gonna play the same thing with
it when it comes to Trevor Lawrence. And you can
go up in the tray Lance and the Jimmy Garoppolo stuff,
man Kyle Shanahan, like they're in this situation to where
they've been throwing Jimmy Garoppolo out as trade bait or
(18:35):
or replaceable for a couple of years. Now, Belichick feels
like it's the one true competition where Belichick is not
on the hot seat. Mac Jones wasn't drafted high enough
to where they feel like they've got to get him
in there sooner rather than later because they want to
show that the futures bright. And you've got a quarterback
in Cam Newton who's got a pretty affordable salary, and
(18:56):
it's got m VP credentials and and and pretend Hall
of Fame reservation back on you a little bit though,
on on which one. On on them not feeling pressure
to play mac Jones, I think they are all going
to feel pressure to play because he's the first it's
the first time they've drafted a quarterback in the first round. Yeah,
but they're not playing him just to play him like
(19:17):
he's got to win this job, correct, And if he
wins the job, I think he's going to get the gig.
He's in position to get the benefit of the doubt.
So even if it's close and it could go either way,
there's the possibility that the idea of him being a
high draft pick for this team could go into to play.
(19:38):
That could be the factor that goes into why he
wins the job. See, I think tie goes to Cam Newton.
If if, if all things are equal, I think Cam
Newton is going to get the nod. While I agree
with you that Cam is the not guy, and I
think that for a lot of different reasons, he didn't
have a whole lot of elements that we're working in
his favor um going into last season, they have eight
(19:58):
optouts on defense too. It was they were not a
good team, and they were they were pretty There are
a lot of holes um and I think that Cam
is embracing being the guy that is going to be
the leader until he isn't the leader. And I think
that that is playing a major part and why he's
he's got such a stronghold on the position. But with
that being said, I do believe that some of the
(20:21):
decisions that have been made in New England totally go
towards the idea that they feel like they need to
put together a really, really good season and and and
part of that is is if Mac Jones can come
in and be that guy, if for some strange reason
he could, if it doesn't happen, and put to you
(20:42):
this way, if it doesn't happen in preseason, then Cam
Newton has to either get injured or he has to
play so poorly because there's nothing Matt can do to
win the job once once we're done with with preseason,
so Cam Newton has to give the job away. I
saw at this point really in reality, it's not a
quarterback competition in New England. It's a Cam Newton has
(21:04):
to play himself out of the job for Mac Jones
to get that opportunity. But with that being said, you
could have went with Stidham. Stidham could have been your
second guy, and you could have just been looking at
Mac Jones as a guy that you you know, which
I don't even know Stidham is even still there. I
think he's had a shoulder issue or something like that.
But well, the idea of it is is that you're
(21:25):
not even looking to play Mac Jones right now, but
he's in the mix as a second guy splitting reps.
And to me, that says, if if Cam does not
show the ability to be able to lead this team
two wins early on, you will see Mac Jones early
on in this season. I'm rooting for Cam Newton, man.
(21:47):
I told I, I love the guy. I've become so
impressed with him just as a player. I think there's
a lot of the narratives on Cam Newton going into
the past couple of years I think have completely been erased.
I think he fantastic and I hope he does well.
But yeah, you're it's interesting. We'll get to see whether
or not Mac Jones can make a push at that
starting gig. This is out kicked the coverage. Hey what's up, everybody,
(22:17):
It's me. Three time pro bowler Lavarrington and I couldn't
be more excited to announce a new podcast called Up
on Game? What is up on Game? You asked, along
with my fellow pro bowler t J. Hudgman's OTTA and
Super Bowl Champion. That's right, Plexico Birds. You can only
name a show with that type of talent on it.
Up on Game We're going to be sharing our real

or wherever you get your podcast from. Right now, the
great pet trous Papa Dagis joins us here on fs R.
(23:03):
He's with us every single Tuesday Am five seventy l
a Sports Fox College football analysts Petros and Jonas and
LaVar what's happening? What's popping with y'all? Not much here,
just getting ready for football season. There's a high school
game this week that I was supposed to call, but
I can't because I met the Dodgers and I didn't
(23:25):
communicate with the high school people. Uh make sure you
come to a Charter Oak game. Oh, I know, Charter Oak.
I know about lou Ferara. I played with a Yeah,
God rest his soul. I played with one of the
great Charter Oak Chargers who was a receiver named Steve
Stephenson who had one of the great nicknames in uh
(23:49):
in my at least in my career, which was jingle
Leg jingle Leg. Like a lot of people missing. Yeah,
there go jingle Leg. You know, Yeah, I miss I
miss jangle Leg. Charter Rope Chargers and they're big, they're
big rival Uh this is Inland, not too far Inland
(24:11):
stand Gabriel Valley area. Most Altos of Sean Cody fame
would be their big rivalry back. You know it's turned
into Glendora now, oh yeah, well that's a Jonathan Smith,
the head coach at at Oregon State, is a Glendora guy.
The Glendora Tartans the Tartans not to be confused with
the Tartars, which is Torrance Wi. The Tartar is join us.
(24:35):
You gotta go get that off your teeth when you
go see the dentist. No, no Tartar is. It's a
reincarnated Honestly, it is a reincarnated Mongol warrior. A generation
or so after after Genghis Khan. A guy named tamber
Lane led a bunch of Mongol warriors who were called
(24:59):
Tar Tarders, having like a food manch who they have
a little mustache. I mean, that's kind of an elaborate,
cool name just to be because it is like a skirt, right,
a Tartan, I think it. Maybe you think it's a skirt.
H It's a Scottish skirt, right, Yeah, what is a Tartan? Yeah,
(25:25):
that Tartan is a skirt. Do you have a Casey Jacobson, Yeah,
you're right, look at that. How about it? Uh? I
was right about Tartar to look at you, LaVar man.
There's no stone on tarn with you. Jacobson was a
Tartan member, Casey with his hair and works at FS
one and Fox and Uh. Tracy Murray, the great NBA player,
(25:51):
also a Tartan, some of the greatest Tartans of all time.
Pop are you? Are you excited about the Dodgers again
since the trades have happened? You know, I like watching
Max Schurz or pitch. You don't really get a look
at anybody like that if they're on the other side
of the country, unless it's the playoffs. You don't really watch, like, oh, hey,
(26:12):
Shuser's pitching to night against the Pirates. Let me check
this out. You know, he's with the Nationals, but when
he's a Dodger, you watch. If you're out here, We're
on the Dodger station, and it's just really fun to
watch him compete. But they have a lot of guys
hurt too. You know, Mookie Bets is down with like
a bone spur, and Clayton Kershaw is on the i L.
(26:34):
They signed Cole Hamills to get his arm right and
be ready to go, and they gave him a million dollars.
So he came to Dodger Stadium started, you know, warming up,
getting to the level where you are pitching in a
major league game, taking live reps or whatever. And he
(26:56):
hurt his arm and left. So they gave him a
million dollars and come out. Yeah, that's like pros first
Joe's we paid Tom Chambers to come out and miss
two three partners and leave. That's great, nice work if
you can get it. No kids, Petro's Papa vegis joy
to us Here on Fox Sports Radio, LaVar Arrington Jonas
(27:17):
Knox with the Here on FS are Um, so we're
having some fun talking about the great Steve Spurrier and
I thought you were going back. Oh no, we were.
We so we had a chance to cover Spurrier and
I was doing radio in the South. Coach or coach both? Yeah,
(27:38):
I heard, I heard both. But LaVar was talking about
how he was his coach in Washington and that. But
Spurrier was so much fun to play for because he
was so lenient that you know, he need prose. So
it was there a coach Petro's Was there a coach
that you loved playing for but ultimately didn't just didn't
(27:58):
have enough success in order to stay around for long term. Well,
I think that goes for almost every coach ever. If
you lock them, if every coach that you like, ever,
they're all eventually gonna get fired. Yes, kind of the
crux of college football. They're all waiting to get fired.
You either get a better job or you get fired.
(28:20):
Very few people go out on their own terms, And
even the urban Myers of the world and all those
weird departures you've seen that's not those aren't on their
own terms, you know. So most of these guys all
get fired. I mean, I like plan for John Robinson,
who was perceived to have lost the discipline of the team.
(28:44):
And that was probably true in the in the late
nineties at USC Like a guy would get in trouble
and he'd say in front of the team, well, I'm
not gonna make you run because you could just run forever.
It doesn't matter. It's like no, that, no, that guy
can't run forever. That guy's high right now, like make
them run. I want to watch him bar But but
as far as Steve Spurrier goes in in the Redskins
(29:07):
days of of LaVar, I can't help but remember my
favorite quote where he was being questioned some preseason about
the amount of time that he spends at the facility.
It was a time. It was a time where everybody
was was touting. Now, we all know most football coaches,
(29:28):
like in real life, football coaches are smart people and
they're good at their jobs. But they are football coaches.
And we have a tendency to pump this position up
because they make a lot of money in the modern day,
because the sport makes a lot of money. But we
pump up had football coaches as if they're leaders of society.
And when we do that, so often we're disappointed. Most
(29:49):
of the time. Their pe majors with or or not
even graduates at all, are probably no underwear on, drinking
light beer and a fan at the high school level
like that. I don't want to hang out with their wives, right,
That's who we are trying. They're trying to escape being
at home with their wife and kids, and they don't
sleep under their desks and they can't let go hang
(30:11):
out with secretaris. Yeah. Being on the field, there's a
lot of that that goes on. So we've seen these
things glorified over the years and you're kind of like, okay, whatever, like,
but there was a time where it was like John
Gruden gets to work at four am and he sleeps
at the office, and it's like it's all b s.
It's all media fodder and those guys are gonna get
(30:33):
fired too, you know. But my favorite was somebody was
asking Spurrier about his lack of time that he spent
around and he said, well, the guy, the guy Jimmy Hasslet,
Jim Jim Jim Hasslet was the coach at the Saint
time and Spurrier said, oh, Jimmy Haslett gets there three
(30:57):
thirty in the morning and Jimmy Haslett and they're six,
ain't made last year? What you are? It's like, oh
my god. If we would like, you know, that's all
we would talk about. We'd be out in the stretch
lines at USC and we'd be like, oh, Jimmy has
Jimmy got more? And what did that say? It's a
(31:17):
valid point. Yeah, no, I love him and it was
a valid point. And we'd always talk about the old
Jimmy hasletop I was telling I was telling to this.
One time we came out for practice and on everything,
and I think we had a game this week. You
we come out, it was like it was a cold
cold like it had to been maybe December something. It
(31:38):
was super cold and it was ice rain coming down
and we were in warmups. We're warm ups and we're
looking at our coach. We're looking at Coach Spurrier and
he's like wiggling and like he's kind of like, you know,
he's shaking it, and we was looking at it. He
was like, hey, man, coaches cold. Coach is cold. You know,
you see coach like kind of trying to walk it off.
(32:01):
He tries to walk it off. Day goes in there, y'all.
Bring it up, bring it out, bring it up. He says, day, Hey, listen,
it's way too cold out held out cold out here. Uh,
let's get into Let's get in the weight room. Let's
get some weights, and let's let's get lunch, and let's
(32:21):
get some some meetings in the meeting room. Let's get
some film. Are y'all okay with this? We was looking
at him like, yeah, yeah, cold colding out here, where
as cold as you are. We broke it down and
went we didn't have enough, We did not have enough
prose that respected what what coach spurri or represented, and
(32:42):
they messed it up. Because then we messed around and
we got Greg Williams that came in after Jesus, and
it went a whole another direction. That's all I'm gonna
tell you. Yeah, I love when a new coach comes
and then no one, no one ever knew how to
play football before that guy shows up. I'm gonna show
you how to really do I know the ancient secrets
to unlock up fill? Hey man, Greg had us doing
(33:08):
two hundred yard up downs on every yard line when
he came into defense. You know what I mean? Well,
I'm looking at I'm looking at my teammates like, man,
I hope you get cut. I hope you get out.
I hope you get cut because all y'all dudes is
the reason why coach Burgers took for granted and now
we do updowns before practice. He wanted us to be
(33:31):
tired going into the practice, so we would do two
hundred yards up downs. I'm like, see what you hadn't
done changed? You know, that part of football has changed
the whole. We're just gonna do this to do it
kind of thing. The let's do Oklahoma before, in the
middle and after practice just to see what it's like. Yeah,
(33:51):
just to see if everybody can get all hyped and
keep that level of anger for you know, two hours,
or let's have a thirty play run drill, you know,
on two day, just to do it. Uh, that kind
of stuff. I feel like it's kind of gone by
the wayside. But people like you and I who played
football before they changed all the rules, we have horror stories,
you know. And then like guys like my dad who
(34:13):
played for John McKay at USC in the late sixties
and seventies, they wouldn't give you water. They thought if
you if you drank water during practice. It was a
sign of well they still had if you think about it,
they still had bears. It was at the end, but
when I came in my rookie year, they still had
(34:33):
bears in the cooler with with the gatorades in the water.
They took speaking to John Robinson. They took me into
the locker room of the Rams game when I was
a kid at halftime and Jack young Blood was sitting
there in full pad smoking cigarettes and I was like, yeah,
we still had coaches that were smoking cigarettes, like in
(34:54):
the building. Well, there there was a There was a
picture that came out of Jim McMahon reporting the camp.
It like last week one of his early training camps
with the Bears, and he had two cases of bud
light walking into training camp. Like that's not happening now,
but back then it was just it was just just
it's different. But you know, you can get some beers
(35:15):
going and let you know, play some dominoes at night
your senior year. This generation of guys their workout freaks, though.
It's the weirdest thing to me, Like they are literally like,
what we're gonna do, Let's go work out, run, We
just finished practice. Yeah, no, let's go. Let's go get
like some reps in let's get something. Everybody feel bad
(35:36):
about themselves, Like wait, yeah, really like I'll be looking
at these young guys like they really do work out
after they work out for the workout was like that
Carson Palmer, that's crazy to me. That's a little that
was a little foreign to me. I guess that was
why I underachieved so so grossly in the league. You know,
(36:00):
was I gotta ask you before we let you go.
You called Rams Chargers the other night. Now, I'm not
gonna ask you about the brawl. You know, I've never
been to a pro football game, and I was going
to ask you. So so that was the first game
that you had a chance to call. Obviously you've called
high school, So it was what jumped out to you
first before anything else in the NFL. Yes, uh, well,
(36:20):
you know I watched NFL games, but it was like,
really the first time I was down and dirty with
a board and trying to do it on air, and
I didn't have the opportunity before and I turned it down.
And I shouldn't have with Fox because you know, I
didn't play in the NFL. So I feel kind of
but there's a lot of announcers now who didn't you know,
they played as many downs as I did in the league,
(36:41):
which is zero. So I don't feel as bad just
filling in on the radio if somebody's out. But I
found it to be well, it was a preseason game.
No one called anything. But even in the preseason, like guy,
I'll catch a swing pass and you'd be like, oh,
he's got to see you know he's dead. You know
that's there's just no you know, it just always shocks
(37:03):
me watching it on TV or live. And the sofa
is a pretty great place. But and I obviously they're
parking in exited entrances a nightmare and a civic failure.
But uh, I just I was. I was surprised at
just how quickly you get got out there. There's just
(37:24):
nowhere to go. There's the hash marks make it so
you really have to go through people to get yards
or win a one on one matchup. And the level
of football remains excellent even with preseason guys out there.
I'm still really impressed by it. Get him on Twitter
at the old p He is the great. Petro's property
(37:44):
is always fun stuff catching looking at tartars and tartans
on Wikipedia, and the tartars all have mustache about it,
and the tartans are all nice plaid oh Man, Petro sellers.
So it again next week, man, always a good time.
Bless you guys. We are Penn State. Baby, that's gonna say.
(38:07):
We are Fox Sports too, alright, so we are that too, alright,
all right, it is on that one. We are Fox Sports.
Did you feel good? We are ye. Now you gotta
do it three times. It's familiar. We are no, no, no, no,
do it again. We are Fox Sports. We are Fox Sports.
We are Fox Sports. And then you're supposed to say
(38:27):
thank you. I'm supposed to say You're supposed to say
thank you. I'm supposed to say welcome. I got confused.
We'll try to get well at some point we will.
We'll have the second tip polite. We're polite fans, you
know what I mean. So when you get to the third,
we are and you say Fox Sports, you say thank you,
and everybody says you're welcome. You know, I say thank you,
(38:50):
you say you're welcome. There that's something to work on.
We gotta work. We totally screwed that up. I'm sorry
Penn State. Coming up next though things in the world
of works we've not had a chance to get to.
We will fire away on those. That's next here on FSR.
Be sure to catch live editions of out Kick the
Coverage week days at six am Eastern three am Pacific.
(39:11):
This is I'll kicked the coverage here on Fox Sports Radio, didn't.
Jonas knocks here on fs are we are? I will
be back here with Brady Quinn coming up tomorrow on
the show. LaVar is too good for us again, so
I just got to hold down DP so got you know,
(39:33):
you got bigger priorities apparently unbelievable. All right, but we will.
We'll be back here tomorrow morning, same time, same place.
Right now, though, it is time for something we do
on the show called this How could you not get to?
These stories are the scraps? And for that we turn
(39:53):
it over to our executive producer Danny g to find
out what that we've missed so far in the show.
D all right, yesterday we lad the scraps with a
story about your Clippers not wanting to spend money, Jonas.
This morning, your Celtics are throwing around some money. Marcus
Smart gets a four year, seventy seven million dollar contract extension.
(40:13):
It begins with three season it's the maximum allowable off
smarts fourteen point three million salary for the deal does
not include a player option. Smart, of course, has developed
into one of the franchise's most important players. So I'm
sure you like this as you rock your green over there. Listen,
there's no green on on on me. I don't know
(40:34):
where this is coming from. I'll just say this, it is.
It is funny that there was there was this conversation
about they were gonna trade Marcus Smart, and well, you know,
is he on the trade block? Is he on the
trade block? And Brad Stevens is like, uh no, in fact,
here's four more years. We're gonna go ahead and make
sure we keep him around. He's been the heart and
soul of that team. Like he's been the one guy
(40:56):
you could consistently count them, maybe not production offensively, but
insistently count on effort from him. And you just you
don't walk away from guys are gonna give you effort
every single night, right Like if you have if you
have a kid on your high school team, LaVar and
you know this kid maybe he's not the greatest player,
but you know you're gonna get a hundred every single
time you got him out there, Like, why would you
(41:18):
want anything except that guy to be on the field,
as much as there might be a guy better than
a very good there it is it is you dream killer. Sorry, guys, alright,
my Raiders announced their new policy as if it wasn't
already an issue getting into Allegian Stadium because of those
(41:38):
high priced tickets. A new policy, the team will require
all fans to show proof of vaccination via the Clear
Health Pass and mobile app, which it says will allow
fans to attend games without wearing a mask if you
can show proof of that. Unvaccinated fans will also be
offered vaccinations on site before the game, and then you'll
(41:58):
have to put a mask on during the game. The
Raiders attribute this change to Nevada's new Emergency Directive for
large events. The rules differ from what the Saints announced
last week because at the Superdome, fans will be allowed
to enter if they have proof of vaccination or a
negative PCR test from the past seventy two hours. So
(42:18):
but but the Raiders, you need to show proof of
vaccination in order to go. Yeah, it doesn't matter. You
can't say I took a test. Here's proof of a
no no testing. Uh, you either have proof of vaccination
for Allegian Stadium or you get vaccinated right there on site. Yeah.
What about what about SummerSlam this weekend? Is that the
same for SummerSlam this weekend or is that a different uh,
(42:39):
you know, different large gathering. That's a good question. It's
just wondering how we uh, what do you guys think
about stadiums doing this is now the second stadium and
I don't want to get their money messed up. Yeah,
you come in and you bring the COVID. You know,
it's a rat. I am surprised that the Raiders are
doing it, just because they were one of the teams
(43:00):
that really got hit bad last year. Everybody got hit
bad last year. But Albert Brier said on the air
that the issue for the teams like the Raiders and
Chargers and Rams, they had new stadiums. They were expecting
that they were going to have fans in these stadiums,
so they were going to make back some of the
money they had put into building these stadiums, only to
have none of them I'm surprised they took this approach
(43:21):
because I would assume they'd want as many people as
possible trying to come to games, which is why the
prices have been so high. Stop all the preseason fights,
say that for the regular season. Man, that junk was funny. Though, Hey,
that junk was funny. Y'all need to stop fighting. But
I laughed at jall the ones who did it. What's
funny coming from Roberto stopped fighting in the stands. Yeah, yeah, Roberto,
(43:46):
that's when you know things are getting bad. And if
you've seen the viral video of the fight at the
New Sofi Stadium, that ursula looking lady really set it
off by throwing the big cup of coke at the
guy that was being held back. He he almost was
gonna let it go and walk away, and then she
throws this big gulp at him, and that set it off.
(44:07):
I will say this, the big dude thought he was tough. Yeah,
but you don't want the Yeah. But if you're gonna
do a Rick Flair chop, there's nothing better than doing
it to like four or five people at the same time.
Like he like he tried to Rick Flair chop four
or five people all at the same time. So I
began to give may for effort when he gets tried
to take the whole mob on. Good for him, man,
(44:28):
you know what a good way to stand your ground.
And that that Aaron Donald Jersey. That's good. And I
believe I believe there were fans of the same team.
That's that's what makes it worse. I'm a fan of
I'm a bigger fan of you. We are later
