(01:02):
Draft week. It is here in Las Vegas Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
and uh and we are previewing the draft talking about
some of the rumblings. The rumors that are out there
are the Jacksonville Jaguar is gonna be taking Aiden Hutchinson
or is there potential for a surprise even though he's
the betting favorite. We've talked about Deebo Samuel who apparently

(01:24):
really doesn't want to be a forty Niner anymore. In
the New York Jets are rumored to uh be interested
in offering up the number ten overall pick. All that
being said, when draft week arrives, what kind of memories
do you guys got This is a big week in
your life, Draft week. You guys got any fun stories,
tales from a draft week back in the day, anything
you want to share their Yeah, yeah, I don't know

(01:49):
how you'd put it. I mean, I just remember being
a busy week. There's just a lot going on. It's
it was kind of hard to really calm down and internalize,
you know, what this week meant. And maybe it feels
different now for kids in college because they're able to
make money out their name, image and likeness. But you know,
you'd put in so much hard work, and there's been
so many sacrifices, and there are so many people around

(02:10):
you that sacrificed to help you get where you were.
I was just you know, thankful and appreciative and and
just just for the opportunity. I mean, honestly, like that
was how I kind of viewed it. And it was
cool because so many people who did support me, like
we're able to come to New York and we're able
to be a part of it. And so throughout the
course of the week, you know, I got the chance
to you know, be able to to to see them

(02:32):
and talk to them and thank them and hang out
with them. Um, you know, I I'm it was just
it was just a really really cool, cool week. I mean,
some of them had a little bit too much, too
good of a time. And I remember to two days
before the draft. I remember I brought a trainer up there.
I I've done some boxing, his cross training and all that,
and he had kind of just because it's actually it's

(02:53):
great for your footwork, but obviously for a quarterback, like
setting up to throw a right hand punch very similar
to setting up the row, you know, a pass if
you're in the pocket. So a lot of your footwork
really kind of mimics that, and so I had, you know,
started doing that back in high school, and I had
brought him out there, and and earlier in the week,
you know, things were starting to turn up a little
bit for the draft, where you'd go to some different

(03:14):
appearances and parties, but not quite to the likes of
what it was like heading into you know, Thursday Friday,
because the draft was over the weekend back then. So
I remember that Thursday night and we had been out
to a party and pretty much everyone was in town
at that point, and he got absolutely ripped, and I
remember saying, I was like, Hey, are you gonna be
in the in the way from my five at tomorrow morning?

(03:35):
He's like, yeah, yeah, I got you. I got you.
And I get down there around like four fifty and
one of my buddies actually had stayed up all night partying,
was hammered out of his mind. But he's sitting in
the weight room with a newspaper one of the benches,
just because he didn't want to go to sleep, And
so he's sitting there with me, and I'm starting to
warm up, and like, you know, it's five fifteen, no

(03:56):
show five five twenty and he's like where is He
was like, I don't know. I I'm sure he got
two panged up, ended up finding his way into someone
else's hotel room. So, uh yeah, he stood me up.
And I remember that was one of the last times
I ever worked with him because I was like, I
was like kind of upset the fact that I don't
care if anyone plays hard, but you gotta work hard too,
Like there's gonna be that fine balance of it. But

(04:17):
that relationship essentially ended at the draft because of that
whole incident. Now what time did you finally hear back
from him? Literally not until like later on that afternoon,
because Lee was lead to Lap just wouldn't even respond
it at all. Yeah, I mean Lee might have set
up like a smoke single let he knows still alive. Um, yeah,
I didn't hear I didn't hear back from until probably

(04:37):
one in the afternoon. I think, Hey, I messed up.
Sorry about that. There really wasn't much of an explanation,
you know, it was just kinda yeah, sorry, you know.
The morning, I like, we're good. He missed the workout
by eight hours, that's all. It's good, all right, Well, interesting.
Uh what about you, LaVar? I mean, were you just

(04:58):
thinking about like who do you knew you were going
to Washington number two? You was setting stone or was
it some potentially you were going to go number one
as well too? I mean, well, again, we we negotiated.
We negotiate it back then. So if you were going one,
you know, you you had your deal done before the

(05:19):
draft even started pretty much. So but I'll say this,
I'll go back you say draft week. This is draft week.
So I'm not going to be uh, the draft was
a blur and and I gotta be honest, I was
fatigued by the time I got to the draft. You know,
I could remember not being able to sleep the night

(05:41):
before the draft. Um that was probably the biggest memory,
I hate to say, from leading up to the draft.
Um like right there and then, but the week during
the week. So a quick backstory. My my father's a
military dude. You know, like everybody if you know the story,
he lost you know, a foot and a leg in

(06:03):
Vietnam when when his uh, his group got you know,
his his squad got ambushed. Um, he got caught on
the tank tread you know, had to use another another
his other foot to put himself off of the tank.
Um that's the type of of dad I had. It was,

(06:23):
you know, or half was this just hard, no military dude,
no nonsense, and just get it done. So for my
entire life, when I told my dad my parents, I'm
going pro. You know, I'm gonna go pro. I'm gonna
do this, I'm gonna do that. You know, I would
have great games in high school, and I have great

(06:44):
games in college, and my mom and dad would just
be like, good job. You know. In high school will
be like, good job, all right, make sure you get
the trash cans out, you know, like I just ran
for two hundred ninety yards in a game. Mom my
dad be looking at me like, yeah, you heard your mom,
Go go take the trash cans out, you know. And

(07:04):
they never my my my dad was such a man
to me and such like a mythical figure in so
many ways that I never could see myself having any
type of like conversations with him, like man to man.
And I just remember maybe it was like right before

(07:26):
we had left to go to New York. I was
back home and me and my dad sat and talked,
and we just talked for like two three hours and
we talked as men, and all I could, all I
could remember, you know, was this. It was easily my

(07:46):
fondest memory of it all because it broke me down.
Like I started. I cried, Like I cried. I cried
every bit of weight that I had ever had on
me in terms of that I wanted to achieve my
expectations that were placed on me, the non expectations. Right

(08:08):
when I was younger, you know, they tried to put
me in in UM in special education classes and said
that you know, I couldn't learn, you know, normal I couldn't.
There were so many things that you know, they were
my my I guess my trajectory was always in question,
and my father and my mother were always always encouraging

(08:32):
me and telling me what I what I define is,
what the definition of who I am is. And my
father was always just very as a matter of fact
about it, like, well, if you can't learn, you can't learn.
And it's like like you're young, and it's like I
don't get that, but it was like kind of his
thing is as you are what you are, and and

(08:55):
you're gonna you're going to either earn what you are
and and make it yours, or you're gonna allow people
to define it for you. And I could just remember
him sitting there, and it was the first time my
dad had ever said to me, I can't believe how
how well you have done. I can't even begin to

(09:19):
tell you how proud I am of all the things
that you've overcome, and and all the conversations you know
that that pursued from that. In that those couple of hours,
it was like that was all I had ever I
could have I could have missed the draft, died that
that next day, and that would have been That was

(09:41):
a bigger moment than them calling my name after draft.
Was my dad acknowledging, finally acknowledging to me how proud
he was of me. And and not just that that
that stood with me, because again, there were so many
moments that were they were just you know, you just
have to overcome. I don't think people understand how much

(10:05):
work and how much heartache and and and setbacks and
and tears and and and even you see the good things,
but you just don't see everything that takes place on
that journey to getting your name called, and and just
for us to be able to kind of talk through things.

(10:26):
That's probably easily the most memorable moment for me Draft
week was me and my dad had the first man
to man conversation that that I had had in my life.
That's awesome. Yeah, man, that's that's pretty cool. And you know,
I do think just in looking at this weekly there
you get a bunch of guys who are three or

(10:47):
four days away from and they have no idea where
they're going to spend the next whole potentially ten years
of their life, have no idea, like they're just sort
of waiting and whatever team takes them, it just changes
the course of history for them moving forward. Like they
have they're probably talking to a few teams, maybe some
some teams they haven't talked to are gonna end up
drafting them. So it just I think the people that

(11:10):
have never been drafted before, we at least have some
sort of an understanding where we're going to be, your
an expectation where we're gonna be. Maybe you don't, but
but these guys know they're going to be in the NFL,
or at least most of them do. But I have
no idea what situation they're gonna end up in, have
no clue I think that's the interesting thing about it
is I don't think they do. I know I didn't.

(11:33):
And and and the idea of it is is that
you you know you're going to get drafted, but you
just don't You don't know where you're going to be,
but you don't know how it's going to play out either.
I would have never thought my NFL career would have
played out the way that it did, and for even
that that aspect of it, no matter what the career
ended up being. I think the reason why that moment

(11:56):
with my dad was so important was the accomplishment was
the accomplishment. And and the idea of it is is
even if you went undrafted, because there is the idea
of understanding that there will be heartbreak at during the
draft as well. There will be many people who thought
they were going to get drafted that don't get drafted.

(12:19):
And then there's that idea of the reality of it
is is that man, I gotta come in as an
undrafted guy and see if I can make it onto
a team. There is a lot of uncertainties. There are
a lot of uncertainties surrounding going into the draft and
what it's going to be, and where you're gonna be.
But I think the one thing that I took, the
value that I took was if you can make it

(12:42):
under under these circumstances, against all odds, to be in
a position, whether you get drafted or not, if you
actually we're able to get to this point, then you
should be able to be successful and any and everything
you endeavor strive to do in your life, because it's

(13:05):
difficult to get to that point. So you're all successes.
You're all a success. You're not a failure. If you
don't get drafted, you're not a failure. If you get
drafted later then you thought you were going to get drafted,
you're not a failure. You're actually a phenomenon. You're you're
a phenomenal success. And you just got to realize that

(13:25):
and realize who you are and let the rest of it,
you know, let the rest of it be what it's
going to be. Enjoy it a moment. Yeah, but it'd
be nice not to be drafted by Jacksonville. I mean,
that'd be cool, you know, I mean, go go to
that environment. It is a income tax stage. Get Yeah,
you get to keep a creator percentage of your bonus
and all that you do donuts and hell cats. That's true.

(13:48):
You know what. Upon further review, Yeah, that is a lot.

Eastern three am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the

(14:33):
I Heart Radio. I mean, is this a shot at
Ben Simmons? This is insulting. The guy's got a bad back.
We gotta pick on him, and now we're piling on
Ben Simmons. Why the grievann then, why the grievance? What
is that? Did he just figure out a way though,
to get paid thirty three million and not do anything,

(14:56):
that's pretty amazing. Yet yeah to him, Yeah, yeah, but
he's relaxed. I'll bet Deshaun Watson's back doesn't hurt, you know,
I'll bet that. Yeah, yeah, for sure. But the way

(15:20):
it is two two frozen a cup of Joe Fox
Sports Radio that, I mean, that is a good point.
I also I heard um one of the things that
was out there is and the reason why he was
so adamant about wanting to get some of his money
back because the Sixers find him a bunch of money.
He lost a lot of money from the Sixers, and yeah,

(15:41):
and he was trying to get it back because there's
been some speculation that he's made some really bad investments,
like he's purchased a couple of homes um and he's
got a lot of money and a lot of bills
to pay for. So even though he's got this hundred
thirty or fourteen million dollars left on a three year deal,
uh that he has not handled his money well. And

(16:01):
so I don't know if he's trying to how outrageous
what you just said sound. I know, I know, but
like I don't know how it's possible. Does that sound
Does that even sound anywhere remotely? Like, Yeah, he's he's
trying to get thirteen million back because he's he's made
some bad investments and he's struggling with with one hundred

(16:23):
and some million left to go on it. Like what
that's out there? I'm telling you, Like he's just that's uh,
let me put this into perspective. Okay, So we we
saw the video of Deebo Samuel and and the you know,
Deebo staying in San Francisco and he's like slash his
throat like no chance. Um. He signed a four year,

(16:45):
seven point two million dollar contract when he initially got
into the league. So so think about it. At this point,
he he's supposed to make almost four million of that
in base salary this year of the seven million, and
so he's made you know, roughly about three point two
over the course of his first three years in the league.

(17:06):
And I said to you his entire neck and wrisk,
I mean, I don't know how much that was. I
I assume that's not like, you know, cz cubic zirconium
from like Claire's that he's wearing. I assume that's all
all real diamonds. That's gotta be hundreds of thousands just
worth in jewelry on, Like, this is a problem for

(17:27):
like all athletes. It's not just like basketball dependent. I mean,
now maybe he's expected to get paid, but three million
and then after taxes that's that's five. Actually, excuse me,
state of California won four. Okay, that's a little different.

(17:49):
That's a little different than oh, I need that thirteen
million back and I got a hundred and thirty going forward.
Like that's just that's a little different. You are working
really really hard to spend your money if you if
you're in need of getting back thirteen million, and you're
already what we said, he made thirty million this year. Yeah,

(18:12):
he's got I think a year. Man. Look here, that
is that's insane. If he's in need of money, that's
in sanity. There's not like like you know what they're
there are certain laws that they should have that should
be established. One should be if you make a certain

(18:33):
amount of money and in some way somehow you spend
it all and you go broke, that should be against
the law. Well, he made a movie about it. It's
Bruster's Millions, right, It should be against the law. But
everything you want to punish more. Yes, you should have
to do jail. Child, you should have to do jail.

(18:54):
I mean someone's got to stimulate the economy. Alright, someone's
gonna find us. I mean, I mean you're stimulating the
economy by earning that money. Like like, yeah, sure you
you should stimulate the economy. But god, you're spending like
you need your thirteen million back and you made thirty

(19:14):
three this year? Are we are? We like? Are like
what does that sound? You imagine that guy being in jail?
They Hey, what are you in for? I spent my money.
I spent all my money. I I broke the threshold.
Yeah it's gonna be well. I ain't gonna say go
to jail, but you should have to go to if

(19:37):
you if you exceed a certain amount of money you
make that type of money, you're so stupid. You you
should be you should have to do mandatory rehab, just
like you do if you get caught up the LaVar.
Do you do you ensure the fact that, like, once

(19:59):
you get off on one of these tangents, we just
try to throw you off the rest of the way.
I'm not getting blamed for this. Brady started it, all right,
if he he knows I can't resist when he goes
down this road. All right, I apologize the bar. That's
not what I meant. You think everything's on the floor

(20:22):
from here on out. Stay on the floor with it.
Let's just stay on the floor. Then send its bank
account on the floor, you know, let on the floor.
Oh man, I mean said on the floor. Uh it is,
you know. But this does break up the time honored
question that we has been brought up many times before.

(20:44):
If you won the lottery, would you take the payments
or everything all up front at once? Right? Because safely
you would take the payments, so you could. It's a
way to, you know, make sure you don't blow all
your money. But who knows what that money is gonna
be and where it's gonna be, and you know, five
ten years from now. So I would rather have all
the money up front and then just trust myself not
being able to pull a Ben Simmons and blow it

(21:05):
on a bunch of stupid crap or or change and
jewelry and things. I'm gonna throw Michael Parsons out there.
I I said I wasn't going to do it, but
I'm gonna do it. Micah Parsons is one of the
most frugal. Good for him, cautious, like, let me tell
you something about him. And I'd like to feel like

(21:27):
I take a whole lot of credit for this because
I told him. I said, listen here, man, I said,
you got to understand how how the relationship between star
athletes and everything else works. All right. Everybody seems to
think that when you become a star athlete, you have
to pay for everything. But it's strange because when you

(21:48):
go do appearances and different things like that, they're paying
you because they want you to be there. I said,
that is the approach you have to take in life.
Mica has mastered the art of appearing. Now he's spending
a whole lot of money and he's not spending nothing
at all. Like take, for instance, the big that big
ass Uh what is that the thing that the lion's

(22:12):
head that he had on his head when he want
Rookie of the Year. Everybody's sitting there and they're probably
saying the same thing we're saying about Deebo Samuel, like, wow,
that's got to be like half a million dollars. Look
how big it is? Look at all those diamonds. It's
not real. It's not real. It looked real, it shines real.

(22:33):
I don't I don't know. That's probably I'm out in it.
Let me let me tell you, Let me tell you no, no, no, no,
let me tell you something. When he gets to forty
years old and fifty years old and sixty years old,
and the dudes that was trying to keep up with

(22:54):
Michael Parsons getting the same size uh charm on their
chains and the big old chokers like you're talking about,
and they were real, let me tell you something, all
that money is gone. You know, who's gonna have their
money and be able to live their life the way
they want to live and not be scrambling to try
to figure out what's going on next in their lives.

(23:15):
Michael Parsons. Michael Parsons, he the dude is one of
the more intelligent dudes. And how he handles what he's doing.
And let me tell you something. We're up in the spot.
They're bringing up all of these bottles and this, that
and the other, and the sparklers are going off and
it's like, whoa, he's spending a lot. No, if they
want you there they'll show you they want you there

(23:37):
by how they treat you. If you come there, you're
bringing value to their establishment by being there. You shouldn't
have to pay for a thing. People who go out
with you, the professional friends and all those things. If
you're professional friends can't pay for you when you go out,
then you shouldn't be going out with him, because, in theory,

(23:58):
the value of them going out with you in those
moments it's you being who you are. If I'm your entourage,
then my entourage should be able to pay for everything
that I had. And that's an ask backwards thought to
most athletes. It's a foreign thought to think that, huh,
the people that hang out with me should be paying
for me. The value that you're getting is by hanging

(24:20):
out with me, So the value I get about you
hanging out with me is paying for me. And whatever
it is I want to do a humble outlook, I think, no,
it's not a humble outlook. It's it's a it's a necessity.
It's a necessity if you think about it, you are
the company that you keep. So if you got it,
like like Brady, I don't know about you, this couldn't
I don't know, but I mean, did you feel like

(24:41):
once you started getting your check as a pro, every
single time you went out, no matter where you went,
when the bill came out, did more than one credit
card come out, more than one card come out, did
more than one person pay for what was what was
taking place? I think it depends. I mean, some of
my my, my good friends and all that would would

(25:02):
offer at least, right, and that's always nice. But to me,
there was always some degree of, you know, taking care
of of those people that brought you to this point
or helped you to this point, or supported you to
that point. So I I see both sides of your
mom and dad exactly for my mom and dad, like
your mom and dad some of your Yeah, but I'm

(25:24):
not having no professional friends around me that every time
we go out we're paying pa. I was gonna say
that depends on the relationship, but yeah, of course, like
you're not. You're not always trying to pick up the
tab for people who have the means, or have the
ability or should be professionally taking care of you. Right.
What about Roberto? You pay for Roberto when you go out? No,

(25:45):
see not now, Roberto. I mean I always hold on
I always asked by Roberto and leaving you guys breakfast
whenever I'm in I did ask the last time. I
will not. I will not pay for anything for anybody.
Jonas is a cheap day, doesn't heed anything. You just
have to buy him a few I p a s

(26:05):
after two. He's pretty much two. I pas at uber home.
My financial advisor, which has the same name and last
name is me gives me the blues. I mean, I
was just getting to get the blues. Conversation not too
long ago about water is getting drank up and and
and how many cases of water to get ran through.

(26:27):
I'm not playing that game, man, I'm not trying to
get tore up by my financial planner. So anytime I
got to spend money, if you can get to go
ahead in the green light from my financial advisor, then
I'll do it. What about Lee? Would you pay for
Lee not paying for Eddie? Would for Eddie? Yeah? I might,

(26:47):
I might pay for it. Why Eddie and not Lee? Lee?
Can you believe this? Because leaves your guy like leaves
your guy. That's guy. Lee's kind of drawn that line
in the sand. I think everyone's guy, but he tends
to be looks for sure. Yeah, yeah, Lee is your guy.
Like we've all too, We've all chosen sides. We should
side this over. We should go paintballing or something should

(27:10):
go after it. We should well, I mean we'd have
to probably go to Florida. I don't know if paintballing
facilities are open. Man. That's a good point. That is
a great point, six ft apart two if you got
hit with hit with one of those things before, yes,
s yeah, closet so we get social distance. We got
mass on um yeah, yeah, it is two pros and

(27:33):
a cup of sports. On the point all of this.
Don't pay anybody, don't pay for anybody. Keep keep your own,
gosh gone money, man, Put your money away. You are
your own investment. Put your money away. So we are
going to get to the b Q news coming up
here next on fs are but for all the latest
from around the world of sports, ladies and gentlemen. A

(27:54):
man who I know you'd pay for everybody on the staff,
The one and only Eddie Garcis. I'm very generous. Absolutely,
just everyone's a while. Uney the name from he stole
it from me. Uh NBA playoffs. We had four games

(34:45):
you can check out the podcast a Fox Sports Radio
dot com after we go off the air. But right
now it is time to put a bow on this
bad boy and this turn. Let's go to the news steps.
Here's Brady Quinn. Yeah, well it's the earlier guys, Chippendales.
That's right. They've hired a law firm. They're looking to

(35:07):
lobby up at d C receive what could be the
final federal pandemic relief funds. Yeah, clearly their g strings
were impacted by the pandemics. So the Chippendales group, which
is famously known for helping to spice up some bachelor
parties there in Las Vegas, the city we love. Um,

(35:28):
they're looking for some pandemic relief. Are you guys feeling
like they're in need of that? Or you know, maybe
you don't really feel like they're not the ones most
Here's here's the question I have. Why would Chippendales have
needed to be shut down. I understand you can't give
lap dances, but you can't like see them on stage,
like you can't stare at them on stuff like what

(35:49):
I mean, maybe they're not as Maybe it's not as
hot a top ticket when they're just on stage. Maybe
you gotta have you know, the hot dog funds, the
the pizza, the pizza boxes, you know, the candy boxes.
You know, it's gotta be more. It's gotta be more,

(36:09):
um interacted for it could be a good ticket. So
I can understand, here's the truth. At least, this is
just one man's opinion. Okay. The problem is the Internet
and the way things are going out there with so
many other options than having to go into some dirty establishments.

(36:30):
That's the reality, all right. These ladies are getting their
actions somewhere else and probably at home before they're ever
getting a sip. Sorry, dude, it's just people are getting lazy.
They got their phone, they got other things going on.
There's a lot of action out there. I just I
think your model is a little outdated. No respect for
the art of mail dancing, you know, just you know,

(36:52):
it's it's terrible what's happened. I think they have to
evolve and turn into certifat robologists. By the way, here
we go, Okay, let's transition to this story. Um, it's
actually it's kind of sad guys, This is a sad deal.
The world's oldest person has died now at a hundred

(37:16):
and nineteen years old. Yes, came to Naka. She was
born in nineteen o three. Um she she's recently passed away.
She uh lives in uh. I believe it's proto u Fukuka, Japan.
Can we dump that please to make sure. Anyway, she

(37:38):
was a hundred nineteen years old, which is pretty remarkable.
I met, I met um, I met a nice old
lady when we were in Eats, Lansing who was celebrating
her hundredth birthday. It's pretty neat. You gotta think somebody
who's lived that long, like everything they've seen, everything they've experienced,
probably got great perspective. And you know what that can
around that is a hundred nineteen years old around him.
Applause to live that far, best far, But what's your

(38:02):
quality of light? You know? You know it's crazy about that.
I'm trying to get up out of here before I
get to that, to that threashold, you're just too old.
Can you Can you imagine being a hundred nineteen years
old and just thinking to yourself, Man, I've never seen
the Lions win a Super Bowl like a hundred nineteen
years still couldn't get it done. Just not happening. The
brown spitting that category it swos well, I didn't want

(38:22):
to take a shot, you know, thanks for bringing that.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry there. Joe moo alright, another dared
double YouTuber. Well, he's been exposed for what was, you know,
basically a publicity stunt. Trevor Jacob basically jumped out of
a plane or parachuted out of a plane trying to uh,

(38:45):
I don't know if he's trying to say the thing
was was what was was going to crash or whatever
the case was. Uh, supposedly though it was all planned,
it was all staged. And now obviously he's in trouble
with the f a A given that the truth has
come out. That wasn't indeed him needing to to jump
out for safety reasons because the plant was going down.

(39:06):
He just did it to garnish attention on YouTube. There's
there's some videos that get posted on like borrow Stool
that I'm like, this is fake, like like something like
I feel like they're it's starting to happen more and
more people just watch they want attention so desperately on
social media that they create these fake videos. I can't
stand it, like it's it's a problem. It's so crazy.

(39:28):
I saw a video the other week of a guy
in Chuck E Cheese outfit that did swear on everything.
I thought it was you. I mean, it's as supposed
to me. Just say, you know, all right, what if attention?
What if we were in Chuck E Cheese? Would you
pay for everybody's pizza? No? You do that. I mean
I'm just what about Chippingdal's. Yeah, if you're in that,
yeah I would. I would do that, just as different

(39:51):
